Welcome to Anchor Bible school. 00:00:15.43\00:00:16.90 We're glad you're here. 00:00:16.93\00:00:18.28 We have exciting days ahead in studying 00:00:18.92\00:00:21.69 particularly Bible prophecy. 00:00:21.89\00:00:24.01 But before we get into our study today, we want to ask 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.60 for the Lord's guidance. 00:00:27.63\00:00:29.08 And so I invite you to bow your heads with me 00:00:29.11\00:00:31.60 as we ask for God to be present with us. 00:00:31.80\00:00:34.29 Let us pray. 00:00:34.32\00:00:35.45 Father in heaven, we come before Your throne today 00:00:35.97\00:00:38.66 with gratefulness in our hearts because we know 00:00:38.69\00:00:42.83 that You are sitting on the throne of the universe, 00:00:43.03\00:00:45.60 and nothing escapes Your attention. 00:00:45.63\00:00:47.89 We live in momentous times. 00:00:48.21\00:00:50.41 We live in a great time of world history. 00:00:50.72\00:00:55.26 And we know that prophecy is so important at this time. 00:00:55.97\00:00:59.51 We need to understand it so that we can share it with others. 00:00:59.94\00:01:03.24 And so, Father, we ask that as we begin this class 00:01:03.58\00:01:06.83 that Your Holy Spirit will be present here 00:01:07.14\00:01:09.75 that we might receive the Holy Spirit's instruction, 00:01:09.96\00:01:13.29 we might learn and have the capacity to share this message 00:01:13.73\00:01:18.03 with the world at large. 00:01:18.06\00:01:19.74 We thank You, Father, for the promise of Your presence. 00:01:20.15\00:01:22.75 And we pray this in the precious name of Jesus, amen. 00:01:23.11\00:01:27.37 Well, let's go directly to our outline. 00:01:28.51\00:01:30.98 We are, first of all, going to deal with some 00:01:31.01\00:01:33.48 introductory matters. 00:01:33.51\00:01:35.48 And as I mentioned, everything that we're going to study 00:01:35.83\00:01:39.27 is in our outline in that particular order. 00:01:39.30\00:01:42.75 Now the first thing that I want us to take a look at 00:01:43.36\00:01:45.98 is the basic types of Bible prophecy that we are 00:01:46.01\00:01:50.43 going to be taking a look at. 00:01:50.46\00:01:52.10 The first type of Bible prophecy is what is called, 00:01:52.88\00:01:56.07 apocalyptic prophecy. 00:01:56.10\00:01:58.37 Now what is apocalyptic prophecy? 00:01:59.11\00:02:01.54 Basically, it has to do with the great chain prophecies 00:02:01.94\00:02:06.60 of Scripture. 00:02:06.63\00:02:07.74 Like Daniel 2, Daniel 7, Revelation 12, Revelation 13, 00:02:07.77\00:02:13.75 Revelation 17. 00:02:13.78\00:02:15.41 Now these prophecies have only one fulfillment, 00:02:15.82\00:02:19.67 one fulfillment. 00:02:20.08\00:02:21.59 I want to read this statement from my former teacher, 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.60 Gerhard Hasel, at the seminary, where he explains 00:02:24.63\00:02:28.23 what apocalyptic prophecies are. 00:02:28.64\00:02:31.14 He says this, and this is in your outline, 00:02:31.80\00:02:35.02 "Dual or two-fold fulfillments may be present in some biblical 00:02:35.32\00:02:41.91 predictions where contextual Scriptural indications 00:02:41.94\00:02:46.20 make this clear and when the details of the specifications 00:02:46.23\00:02:50.60 are met in each instance. 00:02:50.63\00:02:52.90 On the other hand, apocalyptic prophecy 00:02:53.40\00:02:57.50 as found in the books of Daniel and Revelation 00:02:57.53\00:03:01.02 has but one fulfillment for each symbol." 00:03:01.05\00:03:04.81 In other words, there are not two fulfillments 00:03:05.62\00:03:07.37 for the lion of Daniel 7. 00:03:07.40\00:03:09.28 There are not two fulfillments for the bear or for the leopard 00:03:09.38\00:03:12.52 or for the dragon beast or the ten horns. 00:03:12.55\00:03:15.14 There's only one fulfillment for each symbol 00:03:15.45\00:03:18.26 in apocalyptic prophecy. 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.42 And that's important because some people are finding 00:03:20.68\00:03:23.42 reapplications even of the chain prophecies 00:03:23.45\00:03:26.69 to events that are happening in the world today. 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.82 And we're going to see that it actually destroys historicism. 00:03:30.11\00:03:33.88 It destroys the idea that prophecy fulfills in a chain 00:03:33.91\00:03:38.09 so that we can know exactly where we are 00:03:38.12\00:03:40.41 at any given moment in the course of history. 00:03:40.44\00:03:43.94 So the first type of prophecy that we're going to 00:03:44.14\00:03:46.25 take a look at is apocalyptic prophecy. 00:03:46.28\00:03:49.17 Then there's a second type of prophecy. 00:03:49.78\00:03:52.34 And that's classical prophecy. 00:03:52.72\00:03:54.95 And I have some examples here in our syllabus. 00:03:55.75\00:03:58.90 For example, Jeremiah 50 and 51. 00:03:59.51\00:04:03.22 Those chapters deal with the fall of ancient Babylon. 00:04:03.89\00:04:07.66 It's a prediction about the fall of Babylon 00:04:07.94\00:04:10.72 in the days of Belshazzar. 00:04:10.82\00:04:14.02 However, many of the details that we find in 00:04:14.66\00:04:18.50 classical prophecy is fulfilled on a larger scale in the future. 00:04:18.53\00:04:23.66 So in other words, the fact that it's classical prophecy 00:04:24.04\00:04:27.74 doesn't mean that is was only fulfilled with the 00:04:27.77\00:04:30.00 literal historical even in the Old Testament. 00:04:30.03\00:04:32.39 Many of the details then become symbolic or illustrative 00:04:33.24\00:04:37.35 of events that take place at the end of time. 00:04:37.45\00:04:39.89 For example, ancient Babylon we know, according to Jeremiah 51, 00:04:39.92\00:04:44.02 sat on many waters. 00:04:44.37\00:04:46.18 And the waters were dried up. 00:04:46.66\00:04:48.72 Now that kind of rings a bell when we come to the 00:04:49.19\00:04:51.55 book of Revelation where it says that the harlot 00:04:51.58\00:04:54.21 sits on many waters and the waters of the Euphrates 00:04:54.24\00:04:57.44 will be dried up. 00:04:57.47\00:04:58.71 And so classical prophecy was fulfilled in the Old Testament, 00:04:58.74\00:05:02.83 but the fulfillment in the Old Testament then becomes 00:05:02.93\00:05:05.79 a figure or an illustration of a greater fulfillment 00:05:05.99\00:05:09.80 in the future. 00:05:09.83\00:05:10.86 Are you following me? 00:05:10.89\00:05:11.92 Now let's take a look at... 00:05:12.29\00:05:13.86 By the way, let me just read this statement 00:05:13.89\00:05:15.63 also from Gerhard Hasel. 00:05:15.66\00:05:17.11 This is in the book, "Seventy Weeks; 00:05:17.14\00:05:18.75 Leviticus and the Nature of Prophecy," page 289. 00:05:18.78\00:05:22.17 The previous one was in the same book, page 322. 00:05:22.40\00:05:25.70 This is what he said. 00:05:25.73\00:05:26.83 "A dual fulfillment may be recognized only if Scripture 00:05:27.11\00:05:33.72 demands an initial and partial fulfillment and later Scripture 00:05:33.75\00:05:39.75 clearly indicates a final and complete fulfillment." 00:05:39.78\00:05:43.02 So in other words, Scripture has to be clear that there is 00:05:43.48\00:05:47.24 a later fulfillment to this classical prophecy. 00:05:47.27\00:05:50.03 We can't just, you know, impose the Old Testament 00:05:50.06\00:05:53.11 story on the future. 00:05:53.14\00:05:54.44 There has to be clear biblical indications 00:05:54.47\00:05:57.27 in the text that these things have a greater fulfillment 00:05:57.30\00:06:01.40 in the future. 00:06:01.43\00:06:02.46 Like what I mentioned a few moments ago 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.64 with the waters; Babylon sits on many waters, 00:06:04.67\00:06:07.64 and the waters of the Euphrates were dried up. 00:06:07.78\00:06:11.76 We know then that the story of Jeremiah 50 and 51 00:06:11.79\00:06:15.70 has a greater fulfillment at the end of time 00:06:15.90\00:06:18.99 because the terminology that is used in the classical prophecy 00:06:19.02\00:06:22.85 reappears later on in Scripture. 00:06:22.96\00:06:25.33 Now let's go to our third type of Bible prophecy. 00:06:25.98\00:06:29.77 And this type of prophecy we are going to dedicate 00:06:29.80\00:06:33.48 most of our time to here in our class. 00:06:33.51\00:06:37.15 It's what I call, typological prophecy. 00:06:37.95\00:06:40.76 And what do we mean by typological prophecy? 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.42 It means that in the Old Testament you have the 00:06:44.45\00:06:47.04 type or you have the small scale model, 00:06:47.07\00:06:50.16 and then that type or small scale model 00:06:50.19\00:06:53.27 is fulfilled in the future. 00:06:53.30\00:06:56.08 Now let me just mention here what we have in parenthesis. 00:06:56.39\00:06:59.24 The Sanctuary is a prophetic type, isn't it. 00:06:59.27\00:07:05.45 Because it illustrates the different steps, 00:07:05.50\00:07:07.92 the different events, of Christ's ministry; 00:07:08.02\00:07:12.03 Christ's ministry of salvation. 00:07:12.40\00:07:14.29 The Hebrew feasts are also prophetic types, 00:07:14.62\00:07:19.71 because they point to future events. 00:07:19.74\00:07:21.89 And what's interesting is, the Sanctuary gives us 00:07:22.22\00:07:24.65 the events of Messiah's plan of salvation. 00:07:24.68\00:07:27.60 The feasts give us the calendar or give us the dates 00:07:27.93\00:07:32.17 for those events that are found within the Sanctuary. 00:07:32.20\00:07:35.15 So in other words, the Sanctuary and the feasts are typological. 00:07:35.36\00:07:39.36 The feasts give us the events and the... 00:07:39.39\00:07:42.87 The feasts, excuse me, give us the calendar 00:07:42.97\00:07:46.14 and the Sanctuary provides the events 00:07:46.17\00:07:48.63 of Messiah's plan of salvation. 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.25 Matthew 24, we're going to take a look at 00:07:52.33\00:07:54.51 in a few moments in more detail, is a typological prophecy. 00:07:54.54\00:07:59.93 Elijah, the story of Elijah in the Old Testament, 00:08:00.74\00:08:04.33 is a typological prophecy. 00:08:04.36\00:08:06.62 It has a historical root. 00:08:06.65\00:08:08.11 It took place in the Old Testament. 00:08:08.14\00:08:10.23 However, we know that there is also a New Testament Elijah. 00:08:10.62\00:08:14.70 New Testament Elijah is John the Baptist. 00:08:14.90\00:08:16.97 Very clearly Jesus identified John the Baptist as Elijah. 00:08:17.00\00:08:21.95 There is an Elijah during the Middle Ages. 00:08:22.29\00:08:24.75 We know that because Jezebel is active 00:08:25.25\00:08:27.63 during the church of Thyatira, the fourth church of Revelation. 00:08:27.66\00:08:30.93 And Jezebel cannot appear by herself. 00:08:31.34\00:08:33.79 If Jezebel is there, Elijah must be there also. 00:08:33.82\00:08:36.93 Are you with me? 00:08:36.96\00:08:37.99 Now there's an end time Elijah also. 00:08:38.61\00:08:41.25 Because Malachi chapter 4 says that God is going to 00:08:41.70\00:08:44.64 send Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord, 00:08:44.67\00:08:47.80 which is the second coming. 00:08:47.83\00:08:49.30 And so really the historical Elijah becomes a type 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.68 of the New Testament Elijah, a type of the Middle Ages Elijah, 00:08:53.97\00:08:59.41 and a type of the end time Elijah. 00:08:59.44\00:09:02.19 So we're dealing here with typology. 00:09:02.52\00:09:05.75 We're dealing with a small scale illustration 00:09:05.78\00:09:07.95 that is fulfilled later on a larger scale. 00:09:07.98\00:09:12.23 You know, the Mount of Transfiguration is a 00:09:12.80\00:09:15.78 typological prophecy, what happened there. 00:09:15.81\00:09:18.22 You say, "How is that?" 00:09:18.70\00:09:19.88 Well, on the Mount you have three individuals, 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.71 three key individuals besides the apostles. 00:09:22.74\00:09:25.06 You have Jesus, and you have Moses, and you have Elijah. 00:09:25.40\00:09:30.45 There you have a typological prophecy. 00:09:31.07\00:09:32.87 The spirit of prophecy makes it very, very clear. 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.08 First of all you have Moses. 00:09:35.74\00:09:38.70 Moses died, resurrected, and went to heaven. 00:09:39.44\00:09:43.16 He is a type of those individuals who will die 00:09:43.60\00:09:47.96 and Jesus will resurrect when He comes again to take to heaven. 00:09:47.99\00:09:51.66 Elijah was translated to heaven from among the living. 00:09:52.10\00:09:55.98 And so he represents those who will be translated to heaven 00:09:56.66\00:09:59.96 without seeing death. 00:09:59.99\00:10:01.23 And then, of course, in the middle we have Jesus Christ 00:10:01.58\00:10:04.70 who makes it all possible. 00:10:05.21\00:10:06.90 And so you have a little miniature illustration 00:10:07.22\00:10:10.96 of the second coming of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. 00:10:10.99\00:10:14.51 And so there you have, in the New Testament you have a type. 00:10:14.80\00:10:17.84 Not only do you have types in the Old Testament, 00:10:17.87\00:10:19.92 you also have types in the New Testament. 00:10:20.10\00:10:22.70 And so then you also have various stories from Genesis 00:10:23.83\00:10:27.73 and from the book of Revelation, and also the book of Daniel. 00:10:27.76\00:10:31.33 Genesis, the flood story for example is typological. 00:10:32.13\00:10:35.07 The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is typological. 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.47 Those of you who have seen the series, 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.26 Cracking The Genesis Code, have seen that every story 00:10:39.46\00:10:43.09 in the book of Genesis is a typological story. 00:10:43.12\00:10:45.74 You know, Jesus... For example, the flood. 00:10:46.16\00:10:48.34 We're going to study it later on in this class. 00:10:48.37\00:10:50.31 Jesus said that the story of the flood is typological. 00:10:50.51\00:10:53.79 "As it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be 00:10:53.99\00:10:58.17 at the coming of the Son of Man." 00:10:58.20\00:10:59.85 Very clearly it's type, antitype. 00:10:59.88\00:11:03.00 Jesus also said, "As it was in the days of Lot..." 00:11:03.44\00:11:06.57 And so we need to examine the entire story of Sodom 00:11:06.97\00:11:10.46 and Gomorrah because the entire story 00:11:10.49\00:11:13.03 is typological of the end times. 00:11:13.06\00:11:14.96 Even the fact that three angels came to Abraham. 00:11:15.27\00:11:18.15 Interesting, why three angels came to Abraham. 00:11:19.13\00:11:22.16 Is it perhaps true that the messages that they deliver 00:11:22.44\00:11:25.59 are in the same order as the messages of the three angels 00:11:25.93\00:11:29.42 of Revelation chapter 14? 00:11:29.45\00:11:31.29 When we examine Scripture we find that it is so. 00:11:31.32\00:11:34.94 And so we're dealing with typology. 00:11:34.97\00:11:37.30 Now I want to use one particular example 00:11:37.33\00:11:40.12 that we have in our syllabus, and that is the prophecy 00:11:40.58\00:11:44.13 of Matthew 24. 00:11:44.16\00:11:45.44 I have a whole series of 14 presentations 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.12 on Matthew 24. 00:11:48.15\00:11:50.14 I'm only going to deal with one particular aspect, 00:11:50.35\00:11:52.89 and that is the typological nature of this prophecy 00:11:52.92\00:11:57.69 of Matthew chapter 24. 00:11:57.72\00:11:59.43 Now on the Mount of Olives the disciples came to Jesus 00:12:00.22\00:12:03.52 and they asked Him two questions. 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.85 I want you to notice those two questions. 00:12:06.41\00:12:08.49 This is at the bottom of the first page of your syllabus. 00:12:08.52\00:12:11.06 Notice what the two questions were. 00:12:11.09\00:12:12.85 "Tell us, when will these things be?" 00:12:13.18\00:12:16.88 Jesus had just said that not one stone would be left upon another 00:12:17.29\00:12:21.36 in the temple, the Jewish temple and the wall. 00:12:21.66\00:12:25.75 And so the disciples now say, 00:12:26.27\00:12:27.72 "When are these things going to be?" 00:12:27.75\00:12:29.14 And then they ask a second question. 00:12:29.17\00:12:31.25 "And what will be the sign of Your coming, 00:12:31.51\00:12:34.39 and of the end of the age?" 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.86 Are those two questions, two separate questions? 00:12:37.34\00:12:39.57 Absolutely. 00:12:39.60\00:12:40.63 Now the disciples thought it was one. 00:12:40.66\00:12:42.40 Because the disciples thought that if the temple 00:12:43.21\00:12:45.55 was destroyed, that was the second coming, 00:12:45.58\00:12:48.09 that was when Jesus was going to establish His kingdom. 00:12:48.12\00:12:50.25 But Jesus knew that these were two different events. 00:12:50.28\00:12:54.53 And so Ellen White makes it very clear that 00:12:55.14\00:12:58.79 in His answer Jesus used the law of typology. 00:12:58.82\00:13:03.86 In other words, in the destruction of Jerusalem 00:13:04.35\00:13:07.36 Jesus saw a type or an illustration, 00:13:07.80\00:13:11.56 a small scale model, of what's going to happen 00:13:11.59\00:13:15.58 with regard to the world at the end of time. 00:13:15.61\00:13:18.51 You see, what happens in typology is, that which is 00:13:18.71\00:13:22.40 small scale becomes very large scale. 00:13:22.43\00:13:25.72 In other words, the true fulfillment of Matthew 24 00:13:26.05\00:13:29.13 is not what happened in relation to literal Jerusalem. 00:13:29.16\00:13:34.31 That is only a small scale illustration. 00:13:34.51\00:13:36.87 Like the Sanctuary is a small scale illustration 00:13:36.90\00:13:39.57 of global events and spiritual events at the end of time. 00:13:39.94\00:13:44.89 Now I want to read some statements from the 00:13:45.21\00:13:48.20 spirit of prophecy where Ellen White clearly shows that 00:13:48.23\00:13:51.85 Matthew 24 is using the law of typology, 00:13:51.88\00:13:55.34 the third type of prophecy that we're discussing 00:13:55.37\00:13:57.96 as we begin our study. 00:13:57.99\00:13:59.68 She uses the law of type and antitype, and she uses 00:14:00.45\00:14:04.21 many different interesting terms to describe 00:14:04.24\00:14:07.65 this relationship between type and antitype. 00:14:07.75\00:14:10.22 And I want to read these statements and I want to 00:14:10.25\00:14:12.47 underline certain words that we find here. 00:14:12.50\00:14:15.27 The first one is found in, The Great Controversy, page 25. 00:14:15.78\00:14:20.30 This is at the top of page 2 of your syllabus. 00:14:21.03\00:14:24.55 This is how Ellen White describes 00:14:25.62\00:14:27.64 the intentions of Jesus. 00:14:27.67\00:14:29.50 "The prophecy which He uttered was twofold in its meaning; 00:14:29.53\00:14:35.01 while foreshadowing..." 00:14:35.68\00:14:37.48 See, that's an interesting word, "foreshadowing." 00:14:37.51\00:14:40.35 "...the destruction of Jerusalem, 00:14:40.67\00:14:42.95 it prefigured also the terrors of the last day." 00:14:43.05\00:14:48.13 See the key words there? 00:14:48.23\00:14:49.98 The key words are, "foreshadowing." 00:14:50.01\00:14:51.92 That small scale event foreshadowed. 00:14:52.12\00:14:55.43 And, "prefigured." 00:14:55.46\00:14:57.56 Two words that indicate that what happened on a small scale 00:14:57.86\00:15:01.49 is going to happen on a larger scale. 00:15:01.52\00:15:03.78 Now there's also a statement in, Desire Of Ages, page 743, 00:15:04.06\00:15:07.95 where she uses a different terminology. 00:15:08.45\00:15:10.69 She says, "From the fall of Jerusalem 00:15:10.79\00:15:13.28 the thoughts of Jesus passed to..." 00:15:13.31\00:15:15.55 What kind of a judgment? 00:15:15.58\00:15:16.91 "...to a wider judgment. 00:15:17.18\00:15:19.68 In the destruction of the impenitent city He saw a..." 00:15:19.98\00:15:23.25 Now here comes a key term. A what? 00:15:23.28\00:15:25.14 "...He saw a symbol of the final destruction 00:15:25.17\00:15:28.67 to come upon the world." 00:15:28.70\00:15:30.11 So she says that what happened at Jerusalem was symbolic 00:15:30.14\00:15:33.49 of something that would happen in the future on a larger scale. 00:15:33.81\00:15:36.93 In a larger statement that we find in, Desire Of Ages, 00:15:37.59\00:15:40.61 page 628, she had this to say. 00:15:40.64\00:15:43.41 "Jesus did not answer His disciples by taking up 00:15:44.45\00:15:47.91 separately the destruction of Jerusalem 00:15:47.94\00:15:51.08 and the great day of His coming. 00:15:51.11\00:15:52.93 He mingled the description of these two events. 00:15:53.40\00:15:58.53 Had He opened to His disciples future events as He beheld them, 00:15:59.24\00:16:03.65 they would have been unable to endure the sight. 00:16:03.68\00:16:08.17 In mercy to them He blended..." 00:16:08.58\00:16:10.82 Notice, "mingled," "blended." 00:16:10.85\00:16:13.03 "...He blended the description of the two great crises, 00:16:13.06\00:16:17.28 leaving the disciples to study out the meaning for themselves. 00:16:17.31\00:16:20.97 When He referred to the destruction of Jerusalem, 00:16:21.27\00:16:24.08 His prophetic words reached beyond that event to the final 00:16:24.39\00:16:29.85 conflagration in that day when the Lord shall rise out of 00:16:29.88\00:16:33.78 His place to punish the world for their iniquity, 00:16:33.81\00:16:36.42 when the earth shall disclose her blood, 00:16:36.62\00:16:39.08 and shall no more cover her slain." 00:16:39.11\00:16:41.35 And then she says, "This entire discourse was given, 00:16:41.87\00:16:46.65 not for the disciples only, but for those who should 00:16:46.85\00:16:51.02 live in the last scenes of this earth's history." 00:16:51.05\00:16:55.59 Interesting. 00:16:55.62\00:16:56.95 Great Controversy, page 22. 00:16:57.36\00:16:59.42 "Christ saw in Jerusalem a symbol of the world hardened 00:16:59.45\00:17:04.25 in unbelief and rebellion, and hastening on to meet 00:17:04.28\00:17:07.55 the retributive judgments of God." 00:17:07.58\00:17:10.18 Also on page 22, "Jesus, looking down to the last generation, 00:17:10.58\00:17:14.86 saw the world involved in a deception similar to that which 00:17:14.89\00:17:19.60 caused the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:17:19.63\00:17:21.74 The great sin..." 00:17:21.92\00:17:23.01 And now this is very interesting, 00:17:23.04\00:17:24.82 "The great sin of the Jews was their rejection of Christ." 00:17:24.85\00:17:28.71 And by the way, you know that Christ is the embodiment 00:17:29.29\00:17:31.92 of the law, right? 00:17:31.95\00:17:33.27 Christ is the law lived in human flesh. 00:17:34.26\00:17:38.29 So the great sin of the Jews was to reject Christ, 00:17:38.82\00:17:42.70 who is the embodiment of the law. 00:17:43.10\00:17:45.30 She says, "The great sin of the world would be 00:17:46.35\00:17:49.61 their rejection of the law of God, the foundation of His 00:17:49.64\00:17:53.38 government in heaven and earth." 00:17:53.41\00:17:55.13 Let me ask you, are those two sins similar? 00:17:55.16\00:17:58.15 What's worse, to reject the law or the embodiment of the law? 00:18:00.32\00:18:04.63 I mean, to reject Christ means to reject the law, 00:18:07.22\00:18:11.90 because Christ is a reflection of the law. 00:18:11.93\00:18:14.18 And to reject the law is to reject Christ, 00:18:15.11\00:18:18.93 because the law is a reflection of Christ. 00:18:19.34\00:18:21.32 So both ways it's the same sin, 00:18:21.35\00:18:24.32 but looked at from different angles. 00:18:24.52\00:18:26.29 Are you following me? 00:18:26.32\00:18:27.47 And that's why Ellen White says it was similar. 00:18:28.27\00:18:30.57 You know, for a long time I struggled with this. 00:18:30.60\00:18:32.61 I said, you know, in what way is it similar for them 00:18:32.64\00:18:35.06 to reject Christ and to reject the law? 00:18:35.09\00:18:37.22 And then I got to thinking, well the law is a 00:18:37.70\00:18:39.44 reflection of Christ. 00:18:39.47\00:18:40.69 So if the law is a reflection of Christ, 00:18:40.72\00:18:42.46 if you're rejecting the law, you're rejecting Christ. 00:18:42.49\00:18:44.94 And if you're rejecting Christ, you're rejecting the law. 00:18:45.32\00:18:47.51 Because the law is a reflection of Him. 00:18:47.54\00:18:49.80 Now notice, Great Controversy, page 36. 00:18:50.78\00:18:53.13 Here's another statement. 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.50 "The Savior's prophecy concerning the visitation of 00:18:54.95\00:18:58.26 judgments upon Jerusalem is to have..." What? 00:18:58.29\00:19:01.71 "... another fulfillment, of which that terrible desolation 00:19:01.95\00:19:06.09 was but a faint shadow." 00:19:06.12\00:19:07.33 Now if you read the first chapter of Great Controversy, 00:19:07.36\00:19:09.48 you'll say, "That's a faint showed? Wow. 00:19:09.51\00:19:12.02 What is the world going to be like?" 00:19:12.47\00:19:14.01 It is amazing when you read that first chapter 00:19:14.21\00:19:16.94 of Great Controversy what happened in Jerusalem. 00:19:16.97\00:19:19.13 She continues saying, "In the fate of the chosen city 00:19:19.41\00:19:23.42 we may behold the doom of a world that has rejected 00:19:23.45\00:19:27.10 God's mercy and trampled upon His law." 00:19:27.13\00:19:31.17 Going to the next page, notice Ellen White 00:19:31.88\00:19:34.25 time and again, time and again, says that what happened 00:19:34.28\00:19:36.98 in Jerusalem is a type or an illustration of future events. 00:19:37.01\00:19:40.84 This is in the book, Last Day Events, page 18. 00:19:41.13\00:19:44.45 "The whole of the twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew 00:19:44.48\00:19:49.37 is a prophecy concerning the events to precede this event, 00:19:49.58\00:19:54.95 and the destruction of Jerusalem is used to typify 00:19:55.15\00:19:59.14 the last great destruction of the world by fire." 00:19:59.17\00:20:03.44 She also says in Testimonies For The Church, volume 5, page 753, 00:20:04.15\00:20:08.87 "While these prophecies received a partial fulfillment 00:20:09.21\00:20:12.90 at the destruction of Jerusalem, they have a more direct 00:20:12.93\00:20:16.61 application to the last days." 00:20:16.64\00:20:18.63 This shows that the antitype is greater than the type. 00:20:18.66\00:20:22.96 In other words, the future fulfillment is greater 00:20:24.05\00:20:28.22 and is the main focus of the type. 00:20:28.62\00:20:31.34 So she says here in volume 5 of the Testimonies, 753, 00:20:32.36\00:20:37.32 "While these prophecies received a partial fulfillment 00:20:37.35\00:20:39.74 at the destruction of Jerusalem, they have a more direct 00:20:39.77\00:20:42.44 application to the last days." 00:20:42.47\00:20:44.39 A couple of statements more. 00:20:44.75\00:20:46.12 Thoughts From The Mount Of Blessing, page 120 and 121. 00:20:46.15\00:20:50.09 "The ruin of Jerusalem was a symbol of the final ruin 00:20:51.09\00:20:55.40 that shall overwhelm the world. 00:20:55.43\00:20:57.15 The prophecies that received a partial fulfillment 00:20:57.76\00:21:01.17 in the overthrow of Jerusalem have a more direct 00:21:01.20\00:21:04.63 application to the last days. 00:21:04.66\00:21:06.45 We are now standing on the threshold of great 00:21:06.48\00:21:09.28 and solemn events. 00:21:09.31\00:21:10.50 A crisis is before us, such as the world has never witnessed." 00:21:10.53\00:21:15.75 And then one final statement. 00:21:16.08\00:21:17.62 Testimonies To Ministers, page 232. 00:21:17.65\00:21:20.16 "The warnings that Christ gave to Jerusalem 00:21:20.47\00:21:23.08 were not to end with them. 00:21:23.11\00:21:25.60 The judgments upon Jerusalem were a symbol of the events 00:21:25.86\00:21:30.07 of Christ's coming to judgment in the last day, 00:21:30.10\00:21:34.38 when before Him shall be gathered all nations. 00:21:34.48\00:21:37.56 'He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, 00:21:37.59\00:21:41.03 and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, 00:21:41.06\00:21:44.42 from one end of heaven to the other.'" 00:21:44.45\00:21:47.64 So are you understanding this relationship between 00:21:47.95\00:21:50.38 type and antitype? 00:21:50.41\00:21:51.45 These are typological prophecies. 00:21:51.48\00:21:53.76 In other words, the type is a small scale model 00:21:53.96\00:21:56.97 of something far greater in the future of the antitype. 00:21:57.00\00:22:00.52 And in Scripture this method is used repeatedly, time and again. 00:22:00.55\00:22:05.17 As I mentioned before, the book of Genesis, 00:22:05.20\00:22:07.34 every story in Genesis is a prophecy. 00:22:07.63\00:22:11.25 Besides being rooted in history, it did take place literally 00:22:11.28\00:22:14.85 in history, it becomes a small scale model of 00:22:14.88\00:22:18.77 something far greater at the end of time. 00:22:18.87\00:22:21.56 And there's certain principles that we need to apply 00:22:21.59\00:22:24.07 when we study these prophecies 00:22:24.17\00:22:26.35 to understand the future fulfillment. 00:22:26.38\00:22:28.57 So basically these are the three types of prophecies 00:22:29.38\00:22:32.54 that we are going to be using as we study 00:22:32.57\00:22:35.51 these principles about how to interpret prophecy correctly. 00:22:36.14\00:22:40.80 So let's go now to principle number one. 00:22:41.09\00:22:43.86 Principle number one is the most important principle of all. 00:22:43.89\00:22:48.67 What do you suppose it is? 00:22:51.60\00:22:53.15 You know, we could have skipped that one. 00:22:55.12\00:22:56.72 Because that's automatic. 00:22:57.28\00:22:58.68 We know we have to do that. 00:22:59.12\00:23:01.17 But it has to be put as number one. 00:23:01.58\00:23:03.83 Because without the help of the divine Spirit, 00:23:04.60\00:23:06.96 we're going to undoubtedly reach error 00:23:08.68\00:23:12.11 in our conclusions. 00:23:12.41\00:23:13.83 So let's go through this very quickly here, 00:23:13.86\00:23:16.65 principle number one. 00:23:16.68\00:23:18.26 The Holy Spirit imparted the message of Scripture 00:23:18.62\00:23:23.02 to the various writers. 00:23:23.05\00:23:24.37 Therefore, we must pray that the same Spirit that 00:23:25.45\00:23:29.78 inspired the prophetic writings will explain their meaning 00:23:29.81\00:23:34.43 to us today. 00:23:34.46\00:23:35.67 After all, we're removed 2000 years from when these 00:23:36.07\00:23:39.85 books were given; a different language, a different culture, 00:23:39.88\00:23:42.72 to different individuals. 00:23:43.16\00:23:45.02 So we need divine guidance. 00:23:45.05\00:23:46.89 And we must come to prophecy with the willingness to 00:23:47.21\00:23:50.24 practice what we learn. 00:23:50.27\00:23:51.82 Because Jesus said, you know, if we don't, 00:23:52.70\00:23:55.73 then we won't know whether this is of God or not. 00:23:55.97\00:23:59.68 Ellen White has a couple of very interesting statements here 00:24:00.15\00:24:03.44 regarding the importance of prayer. 00:24:04.00\00:24:06.25 Christian Education, page 59. 00:24:07.28\00:24:09.59 She says, "Never..." 00:24:09.94\00:24:11.60 What does "never" mean? 00:24:12.32\00:24:13.74 Exactly that. 00:24:14.64\00:24:16.09 "Never should the Bible be studied without prayer. 00:24:16.19\00:24:20.55 Many times don't we open the Bible and we start 00:24:22.05\00:24:24.38 studying it without praying? 00:24:24.41\00:24:25.74 Every time we open the Bible we should pray. 00:24:25.77\00:24:27.97 "Never should the Bible be studied without prayer. 00:24:28.48\00:24:31.17 Before opening its pages..." 00:24:31.88\00:24:34.44 Wow. 00:24:35.25\00:24:36.39 "Before opening its pages we should ask for the enlightenment 00:24:36.87\00:24:41.65 of the Holy Spirit, and it will be given." 00:24:41.68\00:24:44.45 It's a divine promise. 00:24:45.23\00:24:46.60 So if we pray here at the Anchor Bible school, 00:24:46.80\00:24:49.13 do you suppose the Holy Spirit is going to 00:24:49.16\00:24:50.44 be here to instruct us? 00:24:50.47\00:24:51.90 I believe so. 00:24:52.28\00:24:53.54 Another statement that we find in, 00:24:54.23\00:24:55.81 Counsels On Sabbath School Work, page 38, 00:24:55.84\00:24:58.93 we find why we need to pray before opening the Scriptures. 00:25:00.07\00:25:05.80 There are actually two reasons. 00:25:06.18\00:25:07.64 And you'll notice that the numbers I've placed in 00:25:07.74\00:25:10.02 brackets, I've added those so that we see that there are 00:25:10.05\00:25:13.58 two points that Ellen White is trying to make here. 00:25:13.61\00:25:16.09 She says, "The Bible should never be studied without prayer. 00:25:16.56\00:25:20.44 The Holy Spirit alone can cause us to feel the..." 00:25:21.29\00:25:26.31 Here's the first reason. The what? 00:25:26.34\00:25:28.33 "...the importance of those things easy to be understood..." 00:25:28.66\00:25:32.78 So the first reason to pray is so that the Holy Spirit 00:25:32.81\00:25:35.34 can show us the importance of what we study. 00:25:35.37\00:25:38.23 Or, now there's the other reason. 00:25:39.08\00:25:41.28 Or what? 00:25:41.31\00:25:42.56 "...prevent us from wresting..." 00:25:42.76\00:25:46.47 It's not talking about resting in sleep. 00:25:46.50\00:25:48.66 It's with a "w." 00:25:49.10\00:25:50.39 Wresting means twisting. 00:25:50.73\00:25:52.47 "...wresting truths difficult of comprehension." 00:25:52.50\00:25:56.98 So in other words, God reveals His truth to us 00:25:57.44\00:26:00.72 and He keeps us from embracing error 00:26:01.01\00:26:04.14 by twisting the Scriptures. 00:26:04.58\00:26:06.53 And believe me, there's a lot of Scripture twisting 00:26:06.56\00:26:08.53 going on these days. 00:26:08.56\00:26:09.94 Not only outside the church, but inside the church. 00:26:09.97\00:26:13.62 Because we have a tendency to mold Scripture to our desires 00:26:13.93\00:26:18.03 and to our likes. 00:26:18.06\00:26:19.52 And the reason why is because we're not praying to God 00:26:19.75\00:26:22.20 for divine enlightenment saying, "Lord, show me what 00:26:22.30\00:26:24.52 Your will is, not what my will is. 00:26:24.55\00:26:27.75 And if You show me, I'll abide by it and I will obey it. 00:26:27.78\00:26:32.16 Speak, Lord, for Your servant here." 00:26:33.27\00:26:36.03 That should be our attitude when we come to Scripture. 00:26:36.57\00:26:38.50 So I've placed that principle there because I believe 00:26:38.53\00:26:42.58 that it is the most important. 00:26:42.61\00:26:44.02 And you know, it has the smallest space 00:26:44.61\00:26:47.40 because it's self-explanatory. 00:26:47.43\00:26:49.75 You don't have to have the intelligence of a 00:26:49.78\00:26:52.01 rocket scientist to understand this principle; 00:26:52.04\00:26:54.59 that we need to ask for divine guidance every time 00:26:55.20\00:26:58.67 we open the Scriptures, when we study our Sabbath School lesson, 00:26:58.70\00:27:01.78 you know, when the sermon is about to be preached. 00:27:01.98\00:27:04.81 Wouldn't it be nice for us to sit there in the pew 00:27:04.84\00:27:08.04 and to say, "Oh, the pastor is about to deliver the message," 00:27:08.07\00:27:10.83 and raise up a little prayer to the Lord that the Lord 00:27:10.86\00:27:13.57 will be with the preacher as he preaches the sermon? 00:27:13.60\00:27:16.03 Absolutely. 00:27:16.06\00:27:17.09 Every time we should pray before we open God's holy Word. 00:27:17.45\00:27:23.11 Because without divine wisdom, we cannot 00:27:23.14\00:27:26.05 interpret the Bible correctly. 00:27:26.08\00:27:27.91 Now let's go to principle number two. 00:27:28.78\00:27:30.37 You say, "Wow, we're on a roll here. 00:27:30.40\00:27:32.09 We're on page three already." 00:27:32.12\00:27:33.41 Well, don't sing victory yet. 00:27:33.44\00:27:36.37 Because these first principles are actually the simplest 00:27:36.67\00:27:40.75 and the easier principles. 00:27:40.78\00:27:42.42 Later on we're going to get into some very complex things. 00:27:42.45\00:27:46.08 Principle number two. 00:27:46.80\00:27:48.28 Ask questions of the text that you are studying, 00:27:49.10\00:27:52.50 and then seek for answers to your questions. 00:27:53.60\00:27:57.59 You know, many times we just read the Bible 00:27:59.08\00:28:01.32 and we don't ask the Bible questions. 00:28:02.13\00:28:04.83 I'm not saying in the sense of doubting what the Bible says, 00:28:04.86\00:28:08.61 but questions so that we can understand the text. 00:28:08.81\00:28:12.31 Let's go through this principle as it is in the syllabus. 00:28:12.34\00:28:16.38 Before we begin to interpret a biblical text or passage 00:28:16.74\00:28:21.95 we must first of all read it carefully 00:28:22.26\00:28:25.67 several times in as many Bible versions as possible. 00:28:26.37\00:28:31.50 Each Bible version will give you a different dimension. 00:28:32.02\00:28:34.83 And as you read, ask the text questions. 00:28:36.21\00:28:41.27 You know it's interesting, when Jesus met the religious leaders 00:28:41.71\00:28:44.50 in the temple, if you read Luke 2:46-47, 00:28:44.53\00:28:48.58 the religious leaders of Israel were not so amazed by 00:28:49.21\00:28:54.27 what Jesus said, but by the questions that Jesus asked. 00:28:54.30\00:28:58.19 And so when we come to Scripture, we must come to 00:28:59.27\00:29:01.59 Scripture with an active mind, 00:29:01.62\00:29:04.42 with a clear mind, with an inquisitive mind, 00:29:05.02\00:29:09.25 with a perceptive mind. 00:29:09.95\00:29:11.32 With a mind that is engaged with the biblical text. 00:29:11.35\00:29:14.87 In other words, Bible study, particularly prophecy, 00:29:15.28\00:29:20.23 is like detective work. 00:29:20.33\00:29:22.71 We seek for clues here, there, everywhere. 00:29:24.52\00:29:28.31 And then we bring all of the clues together 00:29:28.34\00:29:30.90 and we are able to make sense out of the passage 00:29:31.00\00:29:33.64 that we're studying. 00:29:33.67\00:29:34.79 Now let me give you some examples. 00:29:36.21\00:29:38.92 And you have some material there that says, 00:29:40.40\00:29:43.87 "God's Great Week." 00:29:45.58\00:29:47.26 "God's Great Week." 00:29:48.58\00:29:49.85 You see that one there? 00:29:49.88\00:29:51.04 It's one of the other handouts that you received 00:29:51.07\00:29:52.86 with the syllabus. 00:29:52.89\00:29:54.00 The first two questions here in the syllabus 00:29:55.93\00:29:58.74 have to do with this material, "God's Great Week." 00:29:58.77\00:30:01.97 Now for many, many years I struggled with two things 00:30:03.07\00:30:08.09 in the book of Genesis as I read the creation story 00:30:08.12\00:30:11.04 in Genesis 1 and 2. 00:30:11.07\00:30:12.44 And I struggled not in a bad sense of the word 00:30:13.16\00:30:15.23 that I doubted what Genesis was saying. 00:30:15.26\00:30:17.28 But I struggled with two questions. 00:30:17.58\00:30:21.33 Number one, if the Sabbath is as important as 00:30:21.36\00:30:26.04 we Seventh-day Adventists believe, why didn't God 00:30:26.07\00:30:29.56 give Adam and Eve a direct command in the Garden of Eden 00:30:29.59\00:30:32.68 to keep the Sabbath? 00:30:32.71\00:30:33.94 You know, it would have been so simple for God. 00:30:34.91\00:30:36.48 Because people say, "You know, the Sabbath was for the Jews." 00:30:36.51\00:30:39.03 And we tell them, "No, but it's in Genesis." 00:30:39.22\00:30:40.80 They say, "But God doesn't say that you're 00:30:40.83\00:30:42.21 suppose to keep the Sabbath. 00:30:42.24\00:30:43.27 It says God rested." 00:30:43.30\00:30:44.95 So I thought many times, I've said, it'd be wonderful if 00:30:45.86\00:30:48.05 God had placed in there, "Adam and Eve, keep the Sabbath." 00:30:48.08\00:30:50.43 And then, you know, the problem would be resolved. 00:30:51.03\00:30:54.99 No problem whatsoever. 00:30:55.02\00:30:56.39 It's not for the Jews, it was for Adam and Eve 00:30:56.42\00:30:58.48 and for the human race. 00:30:58.51\00:30:59.70 But you don't find any direct command in Genesis 00:30:59.73\00:31:02.61 to keep the Sabbath. 00:31:02.64\00:31:03.94 Interesting. 00:31:05.32\00:31:06.61 And then another thing that I struggled with 00:31:07.23\00:31:09.28 for many years was why each day had an evening and a morning 00:31:09.31\00:31:13.41 except the seventh day. 00:31:13.44\00:31:15.11 See, this is what I'm talking about when I say that 00:31:16.92\00:31:19.89 we need to be inquisitive and we need to have an active mind. 00:31:19.92\00:31:23.07 You know, we need to say, 00:31:23.85\00:31:24.92 "Why does the Scripture say it this way?" 00:31:24.95\00:31:26.91 "What's missing?" 00:31:26.94\00:31:28.01 "Why was this word used?" 00:31:28.04\00:31:29.72 "Why was this phrase used?" 00:31:29.93\00:31:31.71 "What is the meaning of this word?" 00:31:31.81\00:31:33.11 "What is the meaning of this phrase?" 00:31:33.14\00:31:34.43 We need to be engaged with the text, in other words. 00:31:34.46\00:31:37.19 We need to ask the text questions, 00:31:37.22\00:31:39.80 and then seek for answers to those questions. 00:31:39.83\00:31:42.04 The second question was, why does each day 00:31:42.07\00:31:46.34 have an evening and a morning except for the seventh day? 00:31:46.37\00:31:49.27 It doesn't say there was the evening and the morning 00:31:49.62\00:31:52.07 of the seventh day. 00:31:52.10\00:31:53.29 And one teacher once said to me, "Well, probably Moses forgot to 00:31:54.32\00:31:58.41 put it in there." 00:31:58.44\00:31:59.47 And I said to him, "I don't think so." 00:32:00.79\00:32:03.31 Everything that should be in Scripture is in Scripture. 00:32:03.34\00:32:08.52 There's a reason, there's a theological reason why 00:32:09.35\00:32:12.61 the seventh day doesn't say that there was 00:32:13.24\00:32:15.12 an evening and a morning. 00:32:15.15\00:32:16.18 And so for years, I'll be honest with you, 00:32:16.21\00:32:18.34 for years I struggled with these questions. 00:32:18.37\00:32:20.72 Until I was on a trip to Panama, I remember. 00:32:21.42\00:32:25.29 I had the book, Patriarchs And Prophets, with me 00:32:25.75\00:32:28.30 and I was reading the chapter on creation. 00:32:28.33\00:32:30.48 Reading it again because I had read it many times. 00:32:31.29\00:32:33.88 And I read a little blurb of that where I said, "Wow. 00:32:34.57\00:32:40.03 I have the answer to my two questions now." 00:32:40.51\00:32:42.99 You say, "Well, where is that statement?" 00:32:44.07\00:32:46.34 It's in this material. 00:32:46.37\00:32:47.85 And unfortunately I did not put page numbers on this material. 00:32:47.88\00:32:51.59 So it might be a little bit of a struggle for you to find this. 00:32:51.62\00:32:54.25 But it's under the subtitle that says, "Spirit of Prophecy." 00:32:55.11\00:32:59.82 There's the subtitle that says, "When was the Sabbath 00:32:59.85\00:33:02.10 Sanctified and Blessed?" 00:33:02.13\00:33:03.93 And then on the next page, "The Spirit of Prophecy." 00:33:04.20\00:33:07.69 And the first statement there is the one 00:33:08.13\00:33:12.44 that really caught my attention. 00:33:12.80\00:33:14.35 And I said, "Wow, now I understand why God did not 00:33:14.45\00:33:17.45 give a direct command and why the seventh day did not 00:33:17.48\00:33:21.02 have an evening and a morning." 00:33:21.05\00:33:22.45 It says there... 00:33:23.16\00:33:24.20 And I want to read two or three of these statements. 00:33:24.23\00:33:26.60 You know, for years I had thought that first Sabbath 00:33:26.70\00:33:30.94 when it was beginning, God ended His work the sixth day, 00:33:30.97\00:33:33.67 and when the seventh day was beginning God said 00:33:33.70\00:33:35.40 to Adam and Eve, "Okay, Adam and Eve, 00:33:35.43\00:33:36.87 this is going to be a holy day. 00:33:36.90\00:33:38.48 So keep it." 00:33:38.51\00:33:39.64 But I was wrong. 00:33:41.22\00:33:42.49 Because that first Sabbath day, God did not command 00:33:43.87\00:33:49.02 Adam and Eve to worship and keep holy 00:33:49.05\00:33:50.87 that first Sabbath day. 00:33:50.90\00:33:52.28 And you say, "Well, why not?" 00:33:53.44\00:33:55.05 Well, let's read what Ellen White had to say. 00:33:55.25\00:33:57.95 See, the little old lady didn't have a theological education. 00:33:57.98\00:34:01.07 But she had the help of the Holy Spirit. 00:34:01.50\00:34:03.30 Some people say Ellen White wasn't a theologian. 00:34:04.22\00:34:06.37 So I tell them, "Well then the Holy Spirit 00:34:06.40\00:34:07.76 isn't a theologian, right?" 00:34:07.79\00:34:09.19 The Holy Spirit is the greatest theologian. 00:34:10.00\00:34:11.95 And that's why what Ellen White says is amazing. 00:34:12.15\00:34:14.78 Notice, when did the Sabbath become holy? 00:34:14.99\00:34:17.79 Was the Sabbath holy when that first Sabbath began 00:34:20.56\00:34:24.07 or did the Sabbath become holy when the day ended? 00:34:24.10\00:34:27.39 The Sabbath became holy when it ended. 00:34:28.29\00:34:30.25 Because you know what? 00:34:30.28\00:34:31.42 It was God's rest that made the Sabbath holy. 00:34:31.45\00:34:33.97 Are you with me? 00:34:36.09\00:34:37.12 Ellen White never got it wrong. 00:34:38.08\00:34:39.73 It would have been very easy for Ellen White, you know, 00:34:40.17\00:34:41.88 she was a strong believer in the Sabbath, 00:34:41.91\00:34:44.67 it would have been very easy for Ellen White to put in 00:34:44.70\00:34:46.60 her writings, "And God told Adam and Eve, 00:34:46.63\00:34:48.59 'You keep the Sabbath now.'" 00:34:48.62\00:34:50.44 But she never says that. 00:34:52.05\00:34:53.38 Notice these statements. 00:34:53.83\00:34:55.20 Patriarchs And Prophets, page 47. 00:34:55.77\00:34:57.46 And I'm not going to go through all of this material. 00:34:57.49\00:34:59.70 I hope that you'll go through it. 00:35:00.00\00:35:01.09 Don't just file this stuff away. 00:35:01.12\00:35:03.04 This took me months to put together. 00:35:03.79\00:35:06.72 So please spend the time to read this material. 00:35:07.03\00:35:11.41 It's got a lot of good stuff in it. 00:35:11.44\00:35:13.08 Notice, "After resting upon the seventh day..." 00:35:13.11\00:35:17.84 What does the word, "after," mean? 00:35:19.51\00:35:20.96 Exactly that, after. 00:35:22.33\00:35:24.42 "After resting upon the seventh day, God sanctified it..." 00:35:24.73\00:35:28.31 When did God make the Sabbath holy? 00:35:29.06\00:35:30.81 After He rested. 00:35:32.17\00:35:33.50 So was the Sabbath holy during that Sabbath day? 00:35:34.09\00:35:37.81 No, it became holy after He rested. 00:35:38.19\00:35:40.84 Because what makes the Sabbath holy is God's rest. 00:35:40.87\00:35:43.38 That's why Sunday can't be holy because God didn't 00:35:43.41\00:35:45.67 rest that day. 00:35:45.70\00:35:46.81 "After resting upon the seventh day, God sanctified it 00:35:49.54\00:35:52.81 or set it apart as a day of rest for man." 00:35:52.84\00:35:55.25 When did the Sabbath become a day of rest for man? 00:35:55.28\00:35:57.23 After the first Sabbath. 00:35:58.38\00:35:59.98 Notice the next page. Now I'm preaching. 00:36:02.10\00:36:03.83 The Desire Of Ages, page 281. 00:36:05.64\00:36:07.93 Listen carefully. 00:36:08.50\00:36:09.54 "Because He had rested upon the Sabbath..." 00:36:09.57\00:36:13.24 Because what? 00:36:13.51\00:36:14.55 Past tense. 00:36:15.92\00:36:16.95 "Because He had rested upon the Sabbath, 00:36:16.98\00:36:19.23 'God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.'" 00:36:19.26\00:36:22.48 Why did God bless the Sabbath and sanctify it? 00:36:23.31\00:36:25.43 Because He had rested. 00:36:25.46\00:36:27.03 "...set it apart to a holy use." 00:36:28.19\00:36:29.87 When was it set apart? 00:36:29.90\00:36:31.23 After He rested. 00:36:31.89\00:36:33.31 And when did He give it to Adam? 00:36:33.64\00:36:35.00 "He gave it to Adam..." 00:36:35.03\00:36:36.20 When did He give it to Adam? 00:36:36.23\00:36:37.52 After He made it holy He gave it to Adam. 00:36:38.00\00:36:41.51 "...as a day of rest. 00:36:44.30\00:36:45.73 It was a memorial of the work of creation, and thus a sign 00:36:46.02\00:36:50.34 of God's power and of His love." 00:36:50.37\00:36:52.39 In the book, My Life Today, page 259, 00:36:53.59\00:36:56.05 speaking about the Lord's Day that's mentioned in 00:36:57.20\00:36:59.03 Revelation chapter 1 and verse 10. 00:36:59.06\00:37:00.96 "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day." 00:37:01.20\00:37:02.51 Most people say, most Christians say, "Oh, that's Sunday. 00:37:02.54\00:37:04.95 'I was in the Spirit on Sunday.'" 00:37:04.98\00:37:06.13 No, no, no. 00:37:06.26\00:37:07.29 Ellen White explains, "The Lord's day mentioned by John 00:37:08.14\00:37:10.71 was the Sabbath, the day on which Jehovah rested 00:37:10.74\00:37:14.54 after the great work of creation, and which He 00:37:15.32\00:37:18.52 blessed and sanctified because He had rested upon it." 00:37:18.55\00:37:23.42 Why did He bless and sanctify it? 00:37:24.12\00:37:25.84 Because He what? 00:37:26.14\00:37:27.33 Because He had rested. 00:37:27.67\00:37:29.27 Testimonies For The Church, volume 4, page 247. 00:37:29.86\00:37:33.80 "God blessed and sanctified the seventh day because 00:37:33.83\00:37:37.58 He rested upon it from all His wondrous work of creation." 00:37:37.61\00:37:41.65 And on the next page, this is, Patriarchs And Prophets, 00:37:42.20\00:37:44.99 page 111. 00:37:45.02\00:37:46.71 "The first six days of each week are given to man for labor, 00:37:46.91\00:37:50.67 because God employed the same period of the first week 00:37:50.70\00:37:53.81 in the work of creation. 00:37:53.84\00:37:55.25 On the seventh day man is to refrain from labor..." 00:37:55.28\00:37:58.22 Why? 00:37:58.42\00:37:59.45 "...in commemoration of the Creator's rest." 00:37:59.48\00:38:03.47 So who's rest is significant? 00:38:08.75\00:38:10.75 The Creator's rest. 00:38:11.53\00:38:13.27 Man, when man rests, he is commemorating 00:38:13.30\00:38:16.73 the Creator's rest. 00:38:16.76\00:38:17.79 That's why in the Bible God says, "The Sabbath is 00:38:17.82\00:38:21.46 My holy day." 00:38:21.49\00:38:23.31 Because it's His holy day before it is our holy day. 00:38:23.68\00:38:27.94 One final statement. 00:38:29.22\00:38:30.64 Review And Herald, September 16, 1862. 00:38:31.03\00:38:33.79 "Instead of keeping God's own rest day, which He sanctified 00:38:34.52\00:38:38.80 after He had rested upon it and set it apart for man to observe 00:38:38.83\00:38:43.42 and reverence, they," that is Protestants, 00:38:43.45\00:38:45.53 "honor a Papal institution." 00:38:45.56\00:38:48.31 Now let's take a look at this. 00:38:49.71\00:38:51.20 Is it important to ask the text questions? 00:38:51.83\00:38:53.93 You know, we might not even think of that question. 00:38:55.65\00:38:59.37 In fact, somebody said to me, "What difference does it make 00:38:59.40\00:39:02.12 whether it was sanctified, you know, as the day was beginning 00:39:02.15\00:39:05.42 or was it sanctified when the day ended? 00:39:05.45\00:39:07.49 What difference does it make?" 00:39:08.09\00:39:09.64 It makes a big difference. 00:39:09.67\00:39:11.12 You know, the main argument that is used by Dale Retzlaff, 00:39:12.28\00:39:14.94 who is an enemy of Adventists, use to be an Adventist, 00:39:14.97\00:39:17.44 and others, is that the Sabbath is not a creation institution 00:39:17.47\00:39:20.85 because God did not command Adam and Eve to keep the Sabbath. 00:39:20.88\00:39:23.74 But now we know that God did not command Adam and Eve 00:39:26.49\00:39:29.74 to rest because the Sabbath did not become 00:39:29.77\00:39:31.91 holy until the day ended. 00:39:31.94\00:39:33.14 How could God tell Adam and Eve to keep the Sabbath holy 00:39:33.17\00:39:35.79 if it was not yet holy? 00:39:35.82\00:39:37.33 Are you with me? 00:39:39.94\00:39:40.97 Furthermore, how could God say to Adam and Eve, 00:39:42.29\00:39:45.20 "Keep the Sabbath according to My example," 00:39:45.86\00:39:48.27 before God gave the example? 00:39:48.30\00:39:50.20 Are you with me? 00:39:54.06\00:39:55.13 And even further, Adam and Eve could not have kept 00:39:55.62\00:39:58.75 the fourth commandment that first Sabbath. 00:39:58.78\00:40:00.90 Because the fourth commandment says 00:40:02.72\00:40:04.01 work six and rest the seventh. 00:40:04.04\00:40:05.79 And they had not worked six. 00:40:05.82\00:40:07.22 So is this significant? 00:40:12.79\00:40:14.60 This is a very significant question. 00:40:15.08\00:40:17.59 And when we engage the text, when we ask the questions 00:40:18.59\00:40:21.57 of the text, you know, we reach some amazing conclusions 00:40:21.60\00:40:26.00 that are extremely important. 00:40:26.03\00:40:27.13 Now what about the evening and the morning? 00:40:27.16\00:40:29.24 See, the problem is, if we think of this first week 00:40:30.50\00:40:34.42 as man's week, then we can't explain the fact that 00:40:34.45\00:40:38.95 there's no evening and morning to the seventh day. 00:40:38.98\00:40:40.87 But when we remember that the first week is God's week... 00:40:40.90\00:40:44.09 The first week is not man's week. 00:40:45.79\00:40:47.48 It's God's week. 00:40:48.38\00:40:49.71 Because God worked six and God rested the seventh. 00:40:50.28\00:40:53.84 The first week has nothing to do with man, 00:40:53.87\00:40:55.76 it is God's week. 00:40:55.79\00:40:57.31 Now the seventh day, God finishes His work the sixth day, 00:41:00.28\00:41:05.46 the seventh day He ceases His work. 00:41:06.02\00:41:08.80 Incidentally, the word, "Shabbat," 00:41:08.83\00:41:10.33 you'll find in this material, does not mean, "rest," 00:41:10.36\00:41:12.96 quality of rest. 00:41:12.99\00:41:14.03 It means, "to cease." 00:41:14.06\00:41:15.58 The word, "rest," there means simply to not do any more. 00:41:18.16\00:41:20.99 It means to cease doing something, 00:41:21.20\00:41:22.70 to stop doing something. 00:41:22.73\00:41:23.96 And we use that word in the same way today. 00:41:24.69\00:41:28.03 When trial is going on and the district attorney is finished 00:41:28.06\00:41:31.65 presenting his case, he says, "The prosecution rests." 00:41:31.68\00:41:36.39 That means he's going to Hawaii on vacation. 00:41:36.42\00:41:38.75 No. What does it mean? 00:41:39.88\00:41:41.21 It means, "I've finished presenting my case. 00:41:41.56\00:41:43.72 I have no more to present." 00:41:43.75\00:41:45.63 So Shabbat means to cease. 00:41:47.87\00:41:49.86 So God ceased His work of creation the seventh day. 00:41:49.96\00:41:56.03 Let me ask you, is God still ceasing 00:41:56.43\00:41:58.49 from His work of creation? 00:41:59.61\00:42:01.07 Has God created any other worlds? 00:42:01.40\00:42:03.37 No. Is God still ceasing? 00:42:03.80\00:42:05.66 Sure. 00:42:06.33\00:42:07.36 And you'll find statements from Ellen White here. 00:42:07.71\00:42:09.42 God is still ceasing from His work of creation 00:42:09.62\00:42:11.91 because He did not begin a new cycle of creation. 00:42:11.94\00:42:14.48 So for God there was no evening and morning of the seventh day. 00:42:15.85\00:42:20.82 But there is for us, we know, because then God says, 00:42:22.19\00:42:24.88 "Now I establish a cycle for you." 00:42:24.91\00:42:27.07 But it's when we try to argue the week that we know 00:42:27.10\00:42:30.46 back into the first week of creation 00:42:30.49\00:42:32.58 that we run into troubles. 00:42:32.61\00:42:33.65 Are you with me or not? 00:42:33.68\00:42:34.75 And so the seventh day had no evening and morning for God. 00:42:35.16\00:42:39.06 But it does have an evening and morning for us. 00:42:39.31\00:42:42.15 So it is very important for us to ask the text what? 00:42:42.18\00:42:46.67 To ask the text questions. 00:42:47.14\00:42:49.68 And then search for answers. 00:42:50.53\00:42:52.29 We're not questioning in the sense of doubting. 00:42:52.32\00:42:55.06 We're questioning in the sense of wanting clarification. 00:42:55.42\00:42:58.78 Now let's go back to our syllabus. 00:42:59.57\00:43:01.44 And I hope that you'll read this whole document. 00:43:02.17\00:43:04.20 There's some incredible statement from Ellen White 00:43:04.23\00:43:06.74 in this material, as well as lots of biblical material. 00:43:06.77\00:43:10.96 Now we're going to deal with this 00:43:12.07\00:43:15.17 third question in the syllabus. 00:43:15.20\00:43:17.03 That is, why was it so urgent to name a successor for Judas 00:43:17.06\00:43:20.96 before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:43:20.99\00:43:22.52 on the day of Pentecost? 00:43:22.55\00:43:23.78 For years I wondered, you know, I said, 00:43:24.36\00:43:26.04 "Okay, so they thought that they needed 00:43:26.15\00:43:28.23 to name a successor for Judas. 00:43:28.26\00:43:30.26 Why? 00:43:30.29\00:43:31.40 Where did they get that idea that they were suppose to 00:43:32.51\00:43:35.02 name a successor in place of Judas?" 00:43:35.05\00:43:37.32 And then I asked myself as I read Acts chapter 1, 00:43:38.25\00:43:40.89 didn't they have more important things to do before the 00:43:40.92\00:43:43.47 day of Pentecost like praying and ironing out their 00:43:43.50\00:43:46.61 differences and, you know, making everything right 00:43:46.64\00:43:50.10 and placing all their properties at the disposal of the work? 00:43:50.13\00:43:52.79 Didn't they have more important things to do 00:43:52.82\00:43:54.75 than to get together and elect a successor? 00:43:54.95\00:43:57.18 Wouldn't it have been wiser to wait until the Spirit was 00:43:57.21\00:44:00.14 poured out on the day of Pentecost? 00:44:00.17\00:44:01.94 Then with the Holy Spirit they'd have much better guidance 00:44:01.97\00:44:04.49 as to who they were suppose to elect. 00:44:04.52\00:44:06.31 So I thought. 00:44:07.77\00:44:08.82 But I knew that there had to be a deeper reason 00:44:09.80\00:44:11.77 as to why they felt it was necessary to elect 00:44:12.47\00:44:16.50 apostle number twelve and why that apostle 00:44:16.53\00:44:21.43 needed to be elected before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:44:21.46\00:44:24.75 on the day of Pentecost. 00:44:24.78\00:44:26.23 And I'm going to give you now the reason why. 00:44:27.11\00:44:29.72 And then we're going to take a look at this whole material. 00:44:30.78\00:44:32.88 Because it deals with how to interpret the prophecies 00:44:32.91\00:44:35.48 of the Old Testament that point to the Messiah. 00:44:35.51\00:44:37.69 This is an amazing story that we're going to study, 00:44:37.79\00:44:40.83 the election of the successor of Judas. 00:44:40.86\00:44:42.98 What was Jesus doing during those ten days 00:44:45.12\00:44:47.94 between the ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:44:50.28\00:44:54.45 on the day of Pentecost? 00:44:54.48\00:44:55.75 You know, we usually think about what the disciples were doing. 00:44:55.78\00:44:58.21 They were in the upper room, they were praying, 00:44:58.38\00:45:00.39 and they were ironing out their differences. 00:45:00.42\00:45:02.52 They were placing all of their properties at the 00:45:02.55\00:45:04.37 disposal of the work. 00:45:04.40\00:45:05.67 You know, they were doing all of these things 00:45:05.70\00:45:07.44 in preparation for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:45:07.47\00:45:09.36 But have you ever wondered what happened to 00:45:09.46\00:45:11.18 Jesus during those ten days? 00:45:11.21\00:45:12.26 What was Jesus doing between the ascension 00:45:12.29\00:45:14.91 and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit? 00:45:14.94\00:45:16.55 The simple answer is... 00:45:17.04\00:45:18.48 And we're going to study this later on in our class. 00:45:18.51\00:45:20.85 The simple fact is that three things were happening 00:45:21.07\00:45:24.22 with Jesus during those ten days. 00:45:24.25\00:45:25.67 First of all, He ascended. 00:45:25.70\00:45:26.93 That's not one of the three, but He ascended to heaven. 00:45:27.16\00:45:29.51 And then in heaven three things happened. 00:45:30.30\00:45:32.40 Number one, He was clothed with the garments of the 00:45:33.29\00:45:38.18 High Priest by His Father. 00:45:38.21\00:45:39.93 Because He was going to serve in the Sanctuary 00:45:40.79\00:45:42.69 as the High Priest. 00:45:42.72\00:45:43.81 Secondly, the Sanctuary was sanctified or set apart 00:45:45.09\00:45:50.47 because that's where Jesus was going to serve. 00:45:50.50\00:45:52.56 And in the third place Jesus was given the gift of the Father. 00:45:53.40\00:45:57.45 Because the gift of the Spirit was not promised to men first. 00:45:57.48\00:46:01.08 It was promised to Jesus for Jesus to pour out upon us. 00:46:01.11\00:46:04.52 And so Jesus, during those ten days, was clothed 00:46:05.91\00:46:09.42 as the High Priest, Jesus was anointed to serve 00:46:09.45\00:46:13.39 as the High Priest with the Spirit, and the Sanctuary 00:46:13.42\00:46:17.02 was sanctified or set apart because that's where 00:46:17.05\00:46:19.95 Jesus was going to serve. 00:46:19.98\00:46:21.39 Now let's think about this. 00:46:23.49\00:46:24.97 One of the pieces of clothing that the High Priest used 00:46:27.35\00:46:31.55 was called the breastplate. 00:46:32.93\00:46:34.82 Ever heard of the breastplate? 00:46:36.57\00:46:37.94 What did the breastplate have? 00:46:38.81\00:46:40.81 The breastplate had twelve stones. 00:46:41.92\00:46:45.32 What do those twelve stones represent? 00:46:46.26\00:46:47.91 In the Old Testament priesthood it represented 00:46:47.94\00:46:50.02 the twelve sons of Jacob. 00:46:50.05\00:46:54.45 And the twelve tribes of course. 00:46:54.55\00:46:56.86 Now when Jesus was clothed as the High Priest, 00:46:58.34\00:47:00.85 what did the twelve stones represent? 00:47:00.88\00:47:02.86 The twelve tribes, as well as what? 00:47:03.88\00:47:06.12 The twelve apostles. 00:47:06.71\00:47:07.74 But now here comes the interesting point. 00:47:07.77\00:47:09.81 How could Jesus be clothed with the breastplate that had 00:47:10.56\00:47:15.45 twelve stones if there were only eleven apostles. 00:47:15.48\00:47:19.18 Are you with me? 00:47:21.37\00:47:22.55 There is a reason for everything in Scripture. 00:47:22.96\00:47:26.42 But we have to have an inquisitive active mind, 00:47:26.45\00:47:29.56 an engaged mind. 00:47:29.59\00:47:30.72 We can't just read. 00:47:30.75\00:47:31.84 Jesus didn't say, "Read the Scriptures." 00:47:31.87\00:47:33.99 He said, "Search the Scriptures." 00:47:34.67\00:47:36.56 The word there is, "scrutinize." 00:47:36.59\00:47:39.39 Do you know what scrutinize means? 00:47:39.72\00:47:41.49 It means to study with a fine tooth comb. 00:47:41.72\00:47:45.26 Because there are gems that are under the surface. 00:47:45.84\00:47:48.24 You know, I don't find much gold on the streets of Fresno. 00:47:48.27\00:47:51.54 You have to dig for it. 00:47:54.27\00:47:55.94 And so it is with Scripture. 00:47:56.59\00:47:58.18 Most of the good stuff is not on the surface. 00:47:58.56\00:48:01.11 Most of the good stuff is beneath the surface. 00:48:01.67\00:48:04.93 And we have to dig for it, we have to search for it. 00:48:04.96\00:48:07.76 Let's go to the next question here. 00:48:08.87\00:48:10.66 How can the harlot of Revelation 17... 00:48:12.45\00:48:15.20 Incidentally, in the material you're going to receive, 00:48:15.23\00:48:17.19 you're going to receive a 22 page document on Revelation 17. 00:48:17.68\00:48:21.78 Many questions about Revelation 17; 00:48:22.23\00:48:24.29 the beast that was, is not, will be; 00:48:24.32\00:48:26.87 the number eight; seven heads, there is an eighth. 00:48:27.31\00:48:31.31 You know, it appears to be a very confusing prophecy. 00:48:31.34\00:48:34.07 It's not confusing. Really. 00:48:34.10\00:48:36.58 It appears confusing, but it isn't 00:48:36.61\00:48:38.63 when you study it using this method. 00:48:38.66\00:48:40.73 Step by step studying each symbol, 00:48:40.76\00:48:42.92 and then putting all of the symbols together. 00:48:42.95\00:48:44.80 You'll see in Revelation 17 that the harlot is sitting on a 00:48:45.72\00:48:48.86 beast, on the waters, and on the mountains at the same time. 00:48:48.89\00:48:51.79 Now how can this woman be seated on the beast, the waters, 00:48:51.82\00:48:56.57 and the mountains? 00:48:56.60\00:48:57.93 Well, we'll answer that later on in our Anchor class. 00:48:58.84\00:49:03.10 You know, another thing, what is the Christ-centered reason 00:49:04.41\00:49:08.76 for Sabbath observance in Exodus 16? 00:49:08.79\00:49:11.16 We'll also be looking at Exodus 16 00:49:11.41\00:49:13.86 later on in this class. 00:49:13.89\00:49:15.33 You know, usually we say as Adventists, 00:49:15.53\00:49:17.40 we say, "You know, we're suppose to keep the Sabbath 00:49:17.77\00:49:21.57 because manna didn't fall on the Sabbath. 00:49:21.60\00:49:24.39 That's good but it's insufficient. 00:49:27.28\00:49:29.45 Because it doesn't give us the Christ-centered reason 00:49:30.18\00:49:32.87 to keep the Sabbath. 00:49:32.90\00:49:34.05 It simply says, "Oh, keep the Sabbath 00:49:35.42\00:49:37.98 you know, because no manna fell on Sabbath." 00:49:39.09\00:49:40.92 So what does that have to do with Jesus? 00:49:40.95\00:49:42.79 It is a Christ-less interpretation. 00:49:45.52\00:49:47.56 Now it does tell us to keep the Sabbath. 00:49:48.35\00:49:49.80 Nothing wrong with that. 00:49:49.83\00:49:50.90 But there has to be a Christ-centered reason 00:49:51.00\00:49:53.32 for keeping the Sabbath. 00:49:53.35\00:49:54.57 See, Adam and Eve kept the Sabbath because their Creator 00:49:55.27\00:49:58.12 sanctified the Sabbath. 00:49:58.67\00:49:59.70 He wants to spend time with them. 00:49:59.73\00:50:01.08 So there has to be a Christ-centered reason 00:50:01.60\00:50:03.43 for no manna falling on Sabbath. 00:50:03.46\00:50:06.07 And we're going to find and, you know, we're going to 00:50:06.10\00:50:08.22 study this in detail, but really what does the manna represent? 00:50:08.25\00:50:12.42 The manna represents Christ, but no generally. 00:50:13.88\00:50:17.54 The manna represents the flesh of Christ. 00:50:18.46\00:50:21.36 So He said in John chapter 6 and verse 51, He says, 00:50:23.11\00:50:26.20 "The manna that I shall give is My flesh 00:50:26.23\00:50:28.95 that I shall give for the life of the world." 00:50:28.98\00:50:31.94 So the manna represents the flesh of Christ. 00:50:32.58\00:50:35.54 Now let me ask you, what happened when manna 00:50:37.48\00:50:41.07 fell on Wednesday and people saved it for Thursday? 00:50:41.10\00:50:43.87 Two things; it bred worms and it stank. 00:50:45.33\00:50:50.48 Right? Bred worms... 00:50:51.37\00:50:53.52 Isn't that kind of strange that it would breed worms and stink? 00:50:53.66\00:50:56.87 Just saving it from one day to the next 00:50:59.42\00:51:01.98 it would breed worms and stink. 00:51:03.25\00:51:04.55 Now let me ask you, what is it that breeds worms and stinks? 00:51:04.58\00:51:07.43 A decomposing body. 00:51:08.50\00:51:10.07 Decomposing flesh. 00:51:11.15\00:51:12.56 Breeds worms and stinks. 00:51:13.05\00:51:14.98 Now what happened when the manna was picked up on Friday 00:51:15.80\00:51:18.64 and saved for Sabbath? 00:51:18.67\00:51:19.84 It was as fresh on Sabbath as it had been on Friday. 00:51:20.67\00:51:24.37 And what does the manna represent? 00:51:25.13\00:51:26.78 The flesh of Jesus. 00:51:27.40\00:51:29.38 Let me ask you, did the body of Jesus, did the flesh of Jesus 00:51:30.11\00:51:34.20 see corruption in the tomb? 00:51:34.23\00:51:35.82 No, because He was what the manna represented. 00:51:35.85\00:51:39.55 There's your Christ-centered reason. 00:51:43.65\00:51:45.39 We keep the Sabbath in commemoration of Jesus 00:51:45.42\00:51:48.98 resting in the tomb on the Sabbath and His flesh 00:51:49.01\00:51:52.38 not seeing corruption. 00:51:52.41\00:51:54.11 Wow. 00:51:54.67\00:51:55.70 That adds a dimension to the issue of the manna. 00:51:56.35\00:51:58.77 And we'll take a closer look at this later on in the class. 00:51:58.80\00:52:01.78 Is it important to ask questions? 00:52:01.81\00:52:03.65 What does Christ... 00:52:03.92\00:52:04.95 Everything we study we have to say, "What does 00:52:04.98\00:52:07.17 Christ have to do with this?" 00:52:07.20\00:52:08.51 That's one of our principles. 00:52:08.54\00:52:10.13 There's a lot of Christ-less interpretation of prophecy. 00:52:10.68\00:52:14.08 Like the 2520. 00:52:14.94\00:52:16.20 You know, that's something that's going around, 00:52:16.23\00:52:17.80 the 2520 year prophecy. 00:52:17.83\00:52:20.48 There's no such prophecy in the Bible. 00:52:20.51\00:52:22.32 The daily. 00:52:23.50\00:52:24.60 And these things, you know, it's study totally 00:52:25.05\00:52:28.11 disconnected from Jesus. 00:52:28.14\00:52:29.75 But prophecy is about Jesus. 00:52:30.94\00:52:33.15 It's about a great Savior. 00:52:34.79\00:52:37.41 It has to be related to Christ. 00:52:37.44\00:52:39.44 If it isn't, it might just be false prophecy. 00:52:40.01\00:52:42.86 Here's another question. 00:52:44.31\00:52:45.56 What is the central point in the story of 00:52:46.32\00:52:49.76 the rich man and Lazarus? 00:52:49.79\00:52:51.38 You know, as I was studying this I discovered 00:52:52.83\00:52:54.90 something very interesting. 00:52:54.93\00:52:56.00 If you want to go with me to Luke 16, 00:52:56.03\00:52:58.24 Luke chapter 16, 00:52:59.02\00:53:00.63 and verses 30 and 31, 00:53:01.84\00:53:04.02 you find something very interesting here. 00:53:06.31\00:53:08.09 You know, I've studied this passage time and time again. 00:53:08.12\00:53:11.87 And then one day I was sitting down studying it again 00:53:11.90\00:53:14.26 and asking the text questions. 00:53:14.29\00:53:16.19 And I said, you know, is there really a difference 00:53:17.89\00:53:20.60 between the beliefs of Abraham and the beliefs of the rich man? 00:53:20.78\00:53:24.98 And I came across this text that we find in 00:53:25.47\00:53:29.11 Luke 16 verses 30 and 31. 00:53:29.14\00:53:32.69 This is the rich man, "And he said, 'No, father Abraham; 00:53:34.93\00:53:40.77 but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'" 00:53:42.05\00:53:45.96 Did the rich man believe in the immortality of the soul? 00:53:49.81\00:53:52.44 Yes. 00:53:54.36\00:53:55.39 He believed it because he says, "If one..." What? 00:53:56.65\00:53:59.05 "...goes to him from the dead they will repent." 00:54:00.01\00:54:04.24 And of course the rich man was dead, right? 00:54:04.27\00:54:06.07 So if one goes to him from the dead, they will repent. 00:54:07.20\00:54:10.05 But I want you to notice what Jesus believed. 00:54:10.08\00:54:12.27 Verse 31, "But he said to him, 'If they do not hear...'" 00:54:12.88\00:54:18.85 This is Abraham and the belief of Jesus. 00:54:18.88\00:54:21.27 Abraham saw Jesus' day. 00:54:21.30\00:54:23.20 "But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, 00:54:23.55\00:54:27.62 neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'" 00:54:27.85\00:54:32.68 What did Abraham believe in? 00:54:36.75\00:54:38.44 The resurrection of the dead. 00:54:39.41\00:54:41.51 The rich man believed in someone going from the dead. 00:54:42.52\00:54:45.30 It's a little nuance, but very important. 00:54:46.33\00:54:49.64 Because it shows that the hope of the Christian is not found in 00:54:49.99\00:54:53.31 an immortal soul, but it's found in resurrecting from the dead. 00:54:54.41\00:55:00.17 The final question that I want to ask, because our time 00:55:01.63\00:55:04.97 is coming to an end in the first class. 00:55:05.00\00:55:07.23 How do we relate the various references to the 00:55:08.28\00:55:12.15 time, times, and dividing of time, 42 months, 00:55:12.18\00:55:17.72 and 1260 days in Revelation 12 and 13? 00:55:18.12\00:55:21.16 You know that this time period is mentioned 00:55:21.19\00:55:22.82 in many different ways. 00:55:22.85\00:55:24.14 1260 days; time, times, the dividing of time; 42 months. 00:55:24.74\00:55:28.45 You know, some people say they're not the same period. 00:55:28.65\00:55:30.99 How can we be sure that they represent the same period 00:55:31.63\00:55:34.51 of church history? 00:55:34.54\00:55:35.79 We have to delve into Scripture. 00:55:37.05\00:55:39.98 We have to look at the context. 00:55:40.01\00:55:41.47 We have to look at what comes before and what comes after. 00:55:41.50\00:55:44.59 You know, we have to have an inquisitive mind. 00:55:44.62\00:55:47.54 That's the main point that I want us to understand, folks, 00:55:47.57\00:55:50.04 is that we cannot simply read the Bible. 00:55:50.07\00:55:53.74 We have to have an engaged active mind when we 00:55:54.96\00:55:58.12 read the Bible, and we have to ask for divine guidance. 00:55:58.15\00:56:00.90 There are things that I am still struggling with. 00:56:01.65\00:56:04.42 And when I say struggling with, I'm not saying that, you know, 00:56:04.45\00:56:08.00 I doubt the Bible or the inspiration of the Bible. 00:56:08.03\00:56:10.58 Not at all. 00:56:10.61\00:56:11.66 I'm struggling with understanding some things. 00:56:12.30\00:56:15.05 There are some things in the writings of Paul, for example, 00:56:15.36\00:56:18.08 that I still struggle with. 00:56:18.90\00:56:20.53 And I've been studying them really, really hard. 00:56:21.11\00:56:23.13 And I'm sure some day, if the Lord doesn't come before, 00:56:23.41\00:56:26.35 I'll be able to understand them more fully. 00:56:27.04\00:56:28.77 If not, Jesus will instruct me when we get to heaven. 00:56:28.80\00:56:31.58 But meanwhile, we have to study these things. 00:56:32.07\00:56:34.60 You know, if Peter struggled with Paul, 00:56:35.08\00:56:38.38 and he lived in the same time frame as Paul, 00:56:39.97\00:56:42.84 well I guess there's hope for us. 00:56:43.15\00:56:45.18 Because we live 2000 years removed. 00:56:45.50\00:56:47.96 And you know, Peter said Paul wrote some things 00:56:48.20\00:56:50.52 that are very difficult to understand. 00:56:50.55\00:56:52.21 And so it would be easier for Peter to say, 00:56:53.09\00:56:55.75 "Paul, you should have been clearer in what you wrote." 00:56:55.78\00:56:58.02 That's not what Peter says. 00:56:58.67\00:57:00.45 Peter says, you know, "The unlearned twist 00:57:00.48\00:57:03.51 to their own destruction." 00:57:04.33\00:57:05.36 In other words, the problem isn't with Paul. 00:57:05.39\00:57:07.71 The problem is with us being willing to invest the time 00:57:07.74\00:57:11.11 and the effort and prayer in struggling 00:57:11.14\00:57:14.50 with the biblical text and finding answers to the questions 00:57:14.53\00:57:18.39 that we ask when we've been studying the biblical text. 00:57:18.42\00:57:21.61 So I hope that as we've studied these principles 00:57:21.73\00:57:26.09 that we understand their importance 00:57:26.19\00:57:29.67 and that we're willing to invest the time first of all 00:57:29.70\00:57:32.00 to pray, and secondly to engage the text actively, 00:57:32.03\00:57:36.71 to search, ask questions, and then seek to find answers 00:57:37.00\00:57:43.42 to our questions. 00:57:43.62\00:57:44.84
