My name is Leasa Hodges. I am the vice president 00:00:20.52\00:00:23.18 for membership for ASi. 00:00:23.39\00:00:25.09 And this is Philip Baptiste. He is our secretary-treasurer 00:00:25.29\00:00:29.49 for ASi. He works at the North American Division 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.46 building. And Philip, you have been in our ASi family 00:00:32.66\00:00:36.87 for one year and three days. 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.53 That's right! And so what have you learned about ASi 00:00:40.14\00:00:43.67 during that time that will keep you going 00:00:43.87\00:00:46.54 another year and three days? 00:00:46.74\00:00:48.31 Well thank you, Leasa. And I'm so humbled and honored 00:00:49.04\00:00:51.85 to serve. And ASi is a depart- ment of the North American 00:00:52.05\00:00:56.38 Division, and ASi exists to equip and empower 00:00:56.58\00:00:59.82 lay business people, lay professional people, 00:01:00.02\00:01:02.46 lay ministry people to engage in our mission 00:01:02.66\00:01:05.03 of sharing Christ in the marketplace. 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.20 And I'm so excited about that mission because 00:01:07.40\00:01:10.23 it's the lay people that are going to finish the work. 00:01:10.43\00:01:13.20 And we've got to work together to activate 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.90 every single Adventist lay- member: Total Member Involvement 00:01:16.10\00:01:19.84 and that's why you need to become a part of ASi. 00:01:20.04\00:01:23.01 Young professionals can be a part. 00:01:23.21\00:01:24.91 Everyone can be a part. 00:01:25.11\00:01:26.45 And Leasa, you have been involved in ASi 00:01:26.51\00:01:29.72 since, you know, almost when I was a little kid. Careful. 00:01:29.92\00:01:33.82 Careful! OK? 00:01:34.02\00:01:36.26 For like 35 years now. 00:01:36.66\00:01:38.29 I think I was just running around. Yeah... yeah. 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.00 So tell us: what drives you? What motivates you? 00:01:40.20\00:01:43.20 What keeps you involved in ASi? 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.57 Well, I actually was bribed to come to my first ASi convention. 00:01:45.77\00:01:51.57 But I was so glad 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.48 and it's been a life-changing experience. 00:01:54.68\00:01:56.91 I was converted, actually, at an ASi meeting. 00:01:57.11\00:02:00.42 I was just... You know, I got baptized 00:02:00.62\00:02:03.69 when I was 8 'cause my dad told me I had to. 00:02:03.89\00:02:06.12 And it wasn't until I came to my first ASi 00:02:06.32\00:02:11.13 that I met a God who was really much bigger 00:02:11.33\00:02:15.46 than I had ever even thought of. 00:02:15.66\00:02:18.07 You know, and one of the things that... that... 00:02:18.47\00:02:21.77 We all go to our local churches. We all have our ministry... 00:02:22.37\00:02:26.01 our local ministries. And sometimes we can bring God 00:02:26.21\00:02:29.68 down to that size. 00:02:29.88\00:02:31.45 But when you come to ASi and you go to the exhibit booth 00:02:31.65\00:02:34.38 and you see those hundreds of booths and ministries 00:02:34.58\00:02:37.65 and you think: "The same God that 00:02:38.05\00:02:40.72 holds you up and that holds your ministry up 00:02:40.92\00:02:43.86 He is holding all these hundreds of ministries 00:02:44.06\00:02:47.10 that are going around the world. 00:02:47.30\00:02:48.73 And He is providing for them; He is leading and guiding them. " 00:02:49.13\00:02:52.13 And you get a much much bigger picture of God 00:02:52.33\00:02:55.20 and the work that He has for us. 00:02:55.40\00:02:56.81 And so ASi is just one of those places 00:02:57.21\00:03:00.21 and events at a convention where you can be inspired 00:03:00.41\00:03:03.85 and encouraged and strengthened to go and do that work 00:03:04.05\00:03:07.58 for the rest of the year. So Leasa, you are vice president 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.45 membership. You've served in that role for the last 2 years. 00:03:10.65\00:03:13.72 Tell us: why should someone become an ASi member 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.32 if they're not today? If you want to wake up, 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.93 if you don't want to be a Laodicean church any more, 00:03:20.33\00:03:24.10 join ASi. They will give you a shot of vitamin A, 00:03:24.50\00:03:30.07 B, C, D, and Z. Come on, preacher! 00:03:30.27\00:03:33.34 And they will get you out of your pews 00:03:33.54\00:03:36.38 and into your community 00:03:36.58\00:03:38.51 to be missionaries and to finish the work. 00:03:38.71\00:03:41.55 Amen! Thank you. 00:03:42.28\00:03:44.09 I think the thing that inspires me the most 00:03:46.15\00:03:48.56 is the testimony of a life of self-sacrifice. 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.63 When I go throughout my day I try to think 00:03:52.36\00:03:55.33 of what other people have gone through before me... 00:03:55.73\00:03:59.23 especially on the days that I feel a little selfish 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.14 or I feel like I don't want to do ministry. 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.17 I think about the people that really didn't have a lot 00:04:05.34\00:04:09.11 or not even have a lot of support 00:04:09.31\00:04:11.01 but they kept on going anyway 00:04:11.21\00:04:13.01 because they had a greater reward, a greater goal in mind 00:04:13.42\00:04:16.42 than just how I feel right now 00:04:16.82\00:04:19.25 and having comfort and pleasure right now. 00:04:19.45\00:04:21.62 And the greatest example of that of course is Jesus. 00:04:22.12\00:04:26.29 And honestly, that's where I got my greatest source 00:04:26.49\00:04:28.76 of inspiration. I guess my question would be: 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.67 why would you not want to join ASi? 00:04:32.07\00:04:34.40 Everyone should be a part of ASi! 00:04:34.80\00:04:36.37 There are all types of people: young, old, 00:04:36.77\00:04:39.11 you know... or college students. 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.08 Rich businessmen and women. And everyone is all together 00:04:42.48\00:04:46.51 for a common goal. Really just worshiping together 00:04:46.72\00:04:50.19 and going for that one mission of seeing Jesus come soon. 00:04:50.39\00:04:54.76 All of the interactions and all of the connections 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.53 that I've had with ASi have been so positive 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.63 because they serve to inspire people in ministry 00:04:59.83\00:05:03.06 and give you resources and training. 00:05:03.26\00:05:06.13 And it's such a huge inspiration and encouragement 00:05:06.33\00:05:08.97 for anyone. And I would just encourage everyone to be 00:05:09.17\00:05:12.47 a part of it. 00:05:12.67\00:05:14.71 Our opening hymn this morning is from hymn # 619 00:05:18.45\00:05:22.55 Lead On, O King Eternal. Let's stand together 00:05:22.75\00:05:25.55 as we sing and ring out our voices together in worship 00:05:25.75\00:05:29.69 to our God. 00:05:29.89\00:05:31.43 Amen! You may be seated. 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.67 Happy Sabbath, ASi! 00:07:56.77\00:07:58.47 Amen! So I would like to introduce to you 00:07:58.67\00:08:01.58 Tara Vang, she's the VP for Evangelism 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.15 and Aubrey Seiler who's the VP for Logistics. 00:08:04.35\00:08:07.42 And they represent GYC. 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.69 Aubrey, tell us: what does GYC stand for 00:08:10.89\00:08:12.85 for those who may not know? 00:08:13.05\00:08:14.39 And what is the purpose of GYC? 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.19 GYC stand for Generation. Youth. Christ. 00:08:17.23\00:08:22.63 And the purpose of GYC is to challenge and inspire 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.70 young people to take sacrificial initiative for Christ. 00:08:26.90\00:08:29.37 One of the main ways we do that is through 00:08:29.77\00:08:32.27 hosting an annual international conference. 00:08:32.47\00:08:35.34 Every year over the New Years we have young people from 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.65 all over the country and all over the world come and attend. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.38 Now ASi has been a long supporter of GYC 00:08:41.85\00:08:45.45 and God has blessed you to accomplish phenomenal things. 00:08:45.85\00:08:49.22 Share with us a little bit about what the outcome was 00:08:49.42\00:08:52.06 of the outreach that you had last year. 00:08:52.26\00:08:54.80 Yes, thank you. Last year we were in Houston. 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.83 And Houston is home to the... it resettles the most 00:08:58.13\00:09:02.00 refugees in America. 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.21 And we thought we should maximize on this opportunity 00:09:04.41\00:09:07.28 to reach the world next door. 00:09:07.48\00:09:09.88 So we took out 32 busses 00:09:10.08\00:09:12.05 and 1/3 of those busses went into refugee territory. 00:09:12.25\00:09:15.98 And we were able to meet the needs of the refugees 00:09:16.18\00:09:19.25 as well as going to the more affluent neighborhoods 00:09:19.45\00:09:22.76 to ask them to donate items that would benefit 00:09:22.96\00:09:26.39 the refugees in their neighborhood. 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.43 And by doing so, we were able to meet the needs of 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.53 both classes and reach them both for Jesus. 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.70 That is wonderful! And what kind of response 00:09:34.90\00:09:38.41 did you get from those who were? Was it difficult to get people 00:09:38.61\00:09:41.18 to donate? No! When we went into the affluent neighborhoods 00:09:41.38\00:09:44.98 we actually left tote bags 3 days before the main outreach 00:09:45.18\00:09:49.42 and asked them: "Please donate these items 00:09:49.82\00:09:52.59 for refugees in your community. " 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.59 When we came back there were more items 00:09:54.79\00:09:57.79 than we could... We didn't know what to do with them. 00:09:57.99\00:10:00.10 It was what we called Tote Bags Until Jesus Comes. 00:10:00.30\00:10:03.63 So it was remarkable that you were able actually to 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.60 reach out to those with means 00:10:07.80\00:10:09.87 and giving them an opportunity to share. 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.17 And that's what opened them up to receive what you had 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.18 for them! Yes. So typically we go in 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.81 and we have like a Bible or a survey. 00:10:18.01\00:10:20.98 But this time we went in and we asked them to give 00:10:21.18\00:10:24.22 to their community. And in doing so, they were open 00:10:24.42\00:10:27.39 to a spiritual conversation. 00:10:27.59\00:10:29.22 And 30% of those who donated 00:10:29.42\00:10:32.89 signed up for Bible studies. Amen! Amen! 00:10:33.29\00:10:36.87 So what's on the books for this year? 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.93 What are the plans for this year? 00:10:40.14\00:10:41.47 So this year we're going to be... In 5 months we'll be 00:10:41.50\00:10:43.34 right here in Louisville, and we want to use the same principles 00:10:43.54\00:10:47.04 of asking those who have the means in Louisville 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.71 to give to the community that needs those means 00:10:50.91\00:10:54.85 here in their own city. 00:10:55.05\00:10:56.58 And we think God is going to bless again 00:10:56.79\00:10:58.42 by using the same principle. Amen! Amen! 00:10:58.62\00:11:01.56 Aubrey, tell me: is GYC something that's kind of local 00:11:01.76\00:11:05.33 to the United States? GYC started in the United States 00:11:05.53\00:11:10.20 but it has since spread really around the world 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.67 in a lot of ways. Because actually I was just 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.50 telling you before we came up here 00:11:16.71\00:11:18.34 that at this last conference in Houston 00:11:18.54\00:11:21.61 we had over 46 countries represented at our event... 00:11:21.81\00:11:26.21 which is really phenomenal. It's so fun! It's like walking 00:11:26.41\00:11:28.82 around the conference and hearing all different kinds of 00:11:29.02\00:11:31.55 languages being spoken. And so the message 00:11:31.75\00:11:36.12 and the spirit of GYC as a sacrificial initiative 00:11:36.32\00:11:40.36 has really spread to Europe, to South America, 00:11:40.56\00:11:43.26 to Australia, to different parts of Asia. 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.13 So it started here but it's not stopping here. 00:11:46.33\00:11:48.97 That's great! That's great! 00:11:49.17\00:11:50.67 Now I know that it's been a blessing for ASi to be able 00:11:51.07\00:11:55.94 to support youth initiatives like Youth for Jesus and GYC. 00:11:56.14\00:12:00.48 Why do you believe it's a good return on our investment 00:12:00.68\00:12:04.19 to continue doing so? 00:12:04.35\00:12:05.69 Well, if you invest in young people, then you're investing 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.59 in your future. I actually was a Youth for Jesus 00:12:09.79\00:12:13.60 participant. I started when I was 15... 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.77 so that was quite a while ago 00:12:16.97\00:12:18.63 even though I only look like I'm 16. 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.64 Thank you. Yeah! 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.70 I get that all the time. 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.57 Yeah, so I started as a Youth for Jesus participant 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.88 back in 2008 and went through that program 00:12:28.08\00:12:33.45 for multiple summers. It impacted my life. 00:12:33.65\00:12:35.48 That's where I decided to give my heart to Jesus 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.42 and was baptized. And then after years 00:12:37.62\00:12:41.69 of going through Youth for Jesus and just being 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.69 reminded over and over why I exist on earth 00:12:44.89\00:12:48.10 when the call came to get involved in GYC 00:12:48.66\00:12:51.80 it was like the natural next step. And so... 00:12:52.00\00:12:54.04 And there have been a lot of my friends and peers who have 00:12:54.24\00:12:57.21 done the exact same thing. 00:12:57.41\00:12:58.74 It just changes the trajectory. I mean, I'm even involved 00:12:59.37\00:13:02.31 in... I'm involved in my local church 00:13:02.51\00:13:04.01 which is a really important aspect of what we do. 00:13:04.21\00:13:06.41 We want young people to get involved in their local 00:13:06.61\00:13:08.48 churches. I am involved leading the youth class in my church. 00:13:08.68\00:13:13.66 I sit on the church board and, you know, things that 00:13:13.86\00:13:17.13 I probably would not have done if it hadn't been for ASi 00:13:17.33\00:13:20.76 initiatives like Youth for Jesus and GYC. 00:13:20.96\00:13:23.47 Amen! So there is a reason 00:13:23.67\00:13:26.60 why we need to continue giving support 00:13:26.80\00:13:29.50 to Youth for Jesus, GYC, other youth initiatives, 00:13:29.70\00:13:33.48 many of the other ministries 00:13:33.68\00:13:35.04 because it helps people become and stay immersed 00:13:35.24\00:13:38.71 in a culture of evangelism. 00:13:38.91\00:13:40.85 So thank you so much for what you are doing 00:13:41.25\00:13:43.62 for and with young people around the world. 00:13:43.82\00:13:46.65 Thank you very much. Thanks, Debbie. 00:13:46.86\00:13:48.22 And we have coming to the podium now Clive and Charlene Coutet. 00:13:51.53\00:13:56.00 And we actually have a video that we'd like to "T up" 00:13:56.40\00:13:59.13 and play at this time before we get into our discussion. 00:13:59.33\00:14:02.10 Wow! That was some incredible footage! 00:15:14.31\00:15:16.75 I can't believe you young people actually travelled 00:15:16.95\00:15:19.48 to locations like that in order to get that footage. 00:15:19.68\00:15:22.12 Clive, you are the media director for Lineage. 00:15:23.02\00:15:26.86 I believe in our program guide it says Ad Fontes 00:15:27.06\00:15:29.36 also or otherwise known as Lineage Productions. 00:15:29.56\00:15:33.43 Share with us how this all started and what it is. 00:15:33.63\00:15:37.13 Well, Lineage is an educational tool. 00:15:37.33\00:15:39.77 We're trying to educate young people 00:15:39.97\00:15:42.07 about the Reformation, about history, and how it's relevant 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.77 to them today. So it's really an educational tool. 00:15:44.97\00:15:47.48 I'm showing them how important that history is 00:15:47.68\00:15:49.61 and how it's preparing us for the future. 00:15:49.81\00:15:52.28 And it basically started when I was reading The 00:15:52.78\00:15:55.12 Great Controversy. And unfortunately, I was looking on 00:15:55.32\00:15:59.02 line for resources to deal with the Great Controversy 00:15:59.22\00:16:01.12 and I was really struggling to find stuff that 00:16:01.32\00:16:02.82 I could connect with. 00:16:03.02\00:16:04.36 They were either really really long or really really old. 00:16:04.56\00:16:07.13 So these videos... And really really boring. 00:16:07.53\00:16:08.96 Well... yeah. 00:16:09.16\00:16:10.50 So these videos are really short. They're kind of like 00:16:11.50\00:16:14.04 snapshots of the Reformation. 00:16:14.24\00:16:16.91 They're 5 minutes long and they're geared toward 00:16:17.11\00:16:18.97 young people with an evan- gelistic appeal at the end 00:16:19.17\00:16:21.98 so they can teach them how relevant this information is 00:16:22.18\00:16:24.78 for them today. Oh, that's wonderful! 00:16:24.98\00:16:26.82 And Charlene, you have something to add to that. 00:16:27.02\00:16:29.08 Yes. What started out as a small project 00:16:29.28\00:16:31.55 all of these episodes have been... There's 100 in all 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.92 as season 1 and 2. 00:16:36.12\00:16:37.46 They've been translated into over 20 languages 00:16:37.69\00:16:40.30 with subtitles and dubbed into four with many more to come. 00:16:40.50\00:16:43.87 So it started out as something just for the UK actually. 00:16:44.07\00:16:47.00 Has blossomed and transformed around the world. 00:16:47.20\00:16:49.84 And that seems to be a theme. Something that you start off 00:16:50.24\00:16:53.54 that you just want to affect just a few people if you're 00:16:53.74\00:16:56.34 praying for that, and somehow God just multiplies it. 00:16:56.54\00:16:59.75 So tell us who is on your team. 00:17:00.15\00:17:01.98 Well, it started with 2 people: my husband Clive 00:17:02.75\00:17:05.55 and the presenter Pastor Adam Ramdin 00:17:05.75\00:17:08.22 and quickly blossomed into ten people. 00:17:08.42\00:17:10.69 All volunteers. Everybody works full time. 00:17:11.09\00:17:14.00 For example, Pr. Adam Ramdin is the youth director 00:17:14.20\00:17:17.27 of the North England Conference. 00:17:17.47\00:17:18.80 Clive is the media director at Weimar Institute. 00:17:18.83\00:17:22.64 And everybody works for an organization that 00:17:22.84\00:17:25.31 wonderfully support missions. 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.64 So without the support of people we actually work full time with 00:17:27.84\00:17:29.81 we couldn't do this. We use our spare time 00:17:30.01\00:17:32.71 to be able to impact into this ministry 00:17:32.91\00:17:34.72 because we're all passionate about young people 00:17:34.92\00:17:36.38 and finishing the work. So speaking of impact, 00:17:36.58\00:17:38.69 Clive. Tell me... has anybody watched these videos? 00:17:38.89\00:17:41.39 Yes! So we have so many testimonies. 00:17:41.59\00:17:43.16 I got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago 00:17:43.36\00:17:45.03 of a lady who was not Seventh-day Adventist 00:17:45.23\00:17:48.40 and she started watching the Reformation videos. 00:17:48.60\00:17:50.87 And because the Reformation continued into Adventist history 00:17:51.03\00:17:53.77 at the end of the whole journey she ended up joining 00:17:54.80\00:17:57.01 a local church and getting baptized. 00:17:57.21\00:17:58.94 We also had another lady who was Adventist 00:17:59.24\00:18:01.84 and her husband wasn't. And she started watching the videos 00:18:02.04\00:18:04.58 and at the end of the journey 00:18:04.78\00:18:06.18 her husband got baptized as well. 00:18:06.38\00:18:07.85 We also heard of them being played in prisons. 00:18:08.35\00:18:11.25 A particular prison ministry is using them 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.92 and studying out a topic and then giving Bible studies. 00:18:14.12\00:18:17.13 And finally we had lots of secular schools 00:18:17.33\00:18:20.80 and Christian schools who are using the videos as a resource 00:18:21.00\00:18:23.33 in their classrooms. But one in particular 00:18:23.53\00:18:25.30 we got a message from some- one who is actually an Adventist 00:18:25.50\00:18:28.24 but he goes to a Catholic school. 00:18:28.44\00:18:29.77 And the teacher is actually an atheist. 00:18:29.94\00:18:33.04 And he was sitting in class one day 00:18:33.24\00:18:34.98 and the teacher just randomly started playing the videos. 00:18:35.18\00:18:37.65 So we don't know how far these videos are going, to be honest. 00:18:37.85\00:18:40.25 Now this atheist teacher 00:18:40.45\00:18:42.32 was playing videos on the Reformation 00:18:42.52\00:18:45.95 which you said has an evan- gelistic appeal at the end. 00:18:46.15\00:18:49.56 That's right. How is it that he came to find 00:18:49.76\00:18:52.73 and use that particular video? 00:18:52.93\00:18:54.46 As part of the curriculum they were studying a topic 00:18:54.66\00:18:57.80 on Aidan. His name is Aidan. He evangelized England 00:18:58.00\00:19:01.20 and he had a training hub, a missionary island, 00:19:01.40\00:19:03.77 called Holy Island. So they were studying this topic 00:19:03.97\00:19:06.71 and the teacher was looking for online resources 00:19:06.91\00:19:10.01 so he punched in Google and found our videos 00:19:10.21\00:19:11.91 and that's how they ended up watching it. 00:19:12.11\00:19:13.48 Now Aside from videos are there any other resources 00:19:13.68\00:19:16.45 that Lineage is working on? 00:19:16.65\00:19:18.55 Yes. We have a website 00:19:18.75\00:19:21.06 that we have set up as an educational tool. 00:19:21.26\00:19:23.93 We finally went to many locations, and you know 00:19:24.13\00:19:26.83 the little placards that say what's going on. 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.83 We found that history is actually being re-written 00:19:29.03\00:19:31.57 and we wanted to be able to provide a resource 00:19:31.97\00:19:34.24 that is authentic. That actually portrays exactly what happened. 00:19:34.40\00:19:37.87 So it's not just the videos. But we have somebody who works 00:19:38.07\00:19:40.98 in Australia really hard to create excellent 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.85 articles and further resources for every single episode that we 00:19:44.05\00:19:47.32 have. We also have T-shirts which have some light humor 00:19:47.52\00:19:51.92 on them to keep things fun. 00:19:52.12\00:19:54.02 We also have study guides that are coming 00:19:54.42\00:19:56.49 so people can use these in their classrooms 00:19:56.89\00:20:00.30 for the Bible study. And we also have 00:20:00.50\00:20:03.37 a coloring book - an educational coloring book - 00:20:03.57\00:20:05.87 that is going to be... I think they're going to show a video 00:20:06.07\00:20:08.87 of it. But it's an incredible resource that we have. 00:20:09.07\00:20:12.84 We have an illustrator who has created custom 00:20:14.41\00:20:17.45 drawings. And by the side of each coloring page 00:20:17.65\00:20:22.38 there is information on exactly what happened. 00:20:22.58\00:20:26.29 There is a "QR" code so you can go directly 00:20:26.49\00:20:28.36 to the video that's fun fact. 00:20:28.56\00:20:31.23 We want to make history exciting for our young people. 00:20:31.63\00:20:34.63 We want it to be accessible. 00:20:34.83\00:20:36.90 So history, if you don't interact with it, it's sad. 00:20:37.10\00:20:39.73 It's nothing. We can't learn from it. 00:20:39.93\00:20:41.40 So we want our young people to be excited by it 00:20:41.60\00:20:44.14 and to use these resources so they can get involved. 00:20:44.34\00:20:46.81 Excellent! Clive, tell us: what's in the future? 00:20:47.01\00:20:49.24 In the future we're planning to shoot a season 3. 00:20:49.44\00:20:51.88 If you look at season 1, it's really the Great Controversy, 00:20:52.08\00:20:54.72 Reformation, and then Adventist history, 00:20:54.92\00:20:56.65 but we want to go all the way back and cover Patriarchs 00:20:56.85\00:20:58.55 and Prophets and then work our way up. 00:20:58.75\00:21:00.59 So that's hopefully in the plans for the future. 00:21:00.79\00:21:02.52 God willing. OK. And that's the project 00:21:02.72\00:21:06.13 for funding this year. That's right. Yes. 00:21:06.33\00:21:08.16 OK... excellent. Well God bless you 00:21:08.36\00:21:10.27 in everything that you're doing through Lineage 00:21:10.47\00:21:11.93 to expose us to the history so that we understand 00:21:12.13\00:21:14.74 better about what's coming for the future. 00:21:14.94\00:21:16.64 Thank you. Thank you. 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.17 Isn't that remarkable? 00:21:19.44\00:21:21.14 Now it's funny to me... Actually, it's not funny. 00:21:25.51\00:21:28.08 It's just a fact of life that cell phones have become 00:21:28.28\00:21:31.55 a major device of communication beyond just "this. " 00:21:31.75\00:21:36.22 All right? And even beyond "this. " You know... texting. 00:21:36.42\00:21:40.66 It's a whole lot more. So we have Kyle Allen 00:21:40.86\00:21:44.07 who's a vice president for Adventist World Radio. 00:21:44.27\00:21:47.37 And Cami Ekman, Oetman! Oetman, OK... who's the VP 00:21:47.57\00:21:53.27 for advancement. Kyle, tell us: how is Adventist 00:21:53.48\00:21:56.54 World Radio doing anything with phones? Cell phones? 00:21:56.75\00:21:59.35 Well, you know Debbie... that's a great question. 00:21:59.55\00:22:00.88 How many of you have one of these? 00:22:00.98\00:22:02.32 Just about everybody, right? 00:22:02.35\00:22:03.69 Do you know that just last week a study was published, 00:22:03.92\00:22:06.19 Debbie, that over 2/3 of the world's population 00:22:06.39\00:22:09.62 has a cell phone. That's over 5 billion people! 00:22:09.82\00:22:12.89 Right. And so we see an incredible opportunity 00:22:13.09\00:22:15.80 in today's world to reach people through these mobile devices. 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.93 You know, Adventist World Radio has been broadcasting 00:22:19.33\00:22:21.24 for many years on over 1,000 radio stations 00:22:21.44\00:22:23.77 around the world: FM, AM, short wave. 00:22:23.97\00:22:25.71 But with these incredible opportunities 00:22:25.91\00:22:28.54 through cell phones we believe we can reach even more people - 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.45 Amen - around the world. OK, so you believe 00:22:31.65\00:22:33.31 you can reach more people. Yes. Are you reaching more people? 00:22:33.52\00:22:35.75 Yes. God is actually doing this. 00:22:35.95\00:22:37.29 Actually, two years ago we were connected with a man in Africa. 00:22:37.35\00:22:40.29 His name is Neville. You'll see his picture there 00:22:40.49\00:22:42.16 in just a moment. But he actually had this vision 00:22:42.36\00:22:44.83 for using the cell phone to send messages to people. 00:22:45.03\00:22:48.03 And what it is is like taking a sermon 00:22:48.43\00:22:50.23 and clipping the audio into short segments 00:22:50.43\00:22:52.70 and sending it over an app. You know, like you have 00:22:52.90\00:22:55.04 apps in your phone like What's App. Like Facebook Messenger 00:22:55.24\00:22:57.74 and instead of just sending a "Hey, how're you doing" text 00:22:57.94\00:23:00.88 sending them Bible studies. Sending these short audio 00:23:01.08\00:23:03.68 segments so that they can learn about the truth. 00:23:03.88\00:23:07.08 And it's incredible - yes - because over 100,000 people 00:23:07.78\00:23:11.55 in 2 years... Over 100,000 people conservative estimate 00:23:11.75\00:23:15.09 have now been receiving these Bible studies. Amen! 00:23:15.29\00:23:17.53 So you just send it to someone and they receive it and? 00:23:17.73\00:23:20.40 Yes. So how does this work? They? 00:23:20.60\00:23:22.63 So they receive the messages and then they forward them on 00:23:22.83\00:23:25.87 to other people. Oh! So it's kind of an exponential - 00:23:26.07\00:23:28.64 OK - sending of messages. That's right. Excellent. 00:23:28.84\00:23:31.54 And we're actually training people how to do this. 00:23:31.74\00:23:34.44 In fact, we're developing training videos. 00:23:34.64\00:23:36.34 That's right. You can go to awr.org 00:23:36.54\00:23:38.28 Soon we're going to have those up for people to know... 00:23:38.48\00:23:40.68 so you can know how you can use your cell phone. 00:23:40.88\00:23:43.28 OK... then for the training 00:23:43.49\00:23:45.05 we don't necessarily need to go to a particular location. 00:23:45.25\00:23:47.79 We'll have access to them online. Absolutely! 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.19 So that's coming up soon. That sounds great. 00:23:50.39\00:23:51.89 Debbie, this is cool, OK? In Israel 00:23:52.09\00:23:54.50 we have a pastor. He's an Arabic-speaking pastor. 00:23:54.70\00:23:57.43 The only Arabic-speaking Adventist pastor in Israel. 00:23:57.63\00:24:00.00 His name is Wisam. By the way, has a tremendous testimony... 00:24:00.20\00:24:03.54 Yes, they can watch it on awr.org 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.74 We can't share it here... that's right. Along with many other 00:24:06.94\00:24:08.28 videos are there. But Wisam said: "What if we 00:24:08.34\00:24:10.78 take these cell phone evangelism Revelation of Hope sermons, 00:24:10.98\00:24:13.95 translate them into Arabic, 00:24:14.15\00:24:15.48 and then send them out to people? 00:24:15.62\00:24:16.95 Well, by God's grace today an entire Baptist church 00:24:16.99\00:24:20.36 just as an example is receiving these messages 00:24:20.56\00:24:22.99 in Israel. Amen? Amen! 00:24:23.19\00:24:24.86 That's phenomenal. Yes! Now this is not only happening 00:24:25.06\00:24:27.76 in Africa and Israel but also let's go to Mexico. 00:24:27.96\00:24:31.33 In Mexico there's a young man by the name of Luis. 00:24:31.73\00:24:34.44 Thirty-five years old. Last Thanksgiving he decides 00:24:34.64\00:24:36.81 he's going to translate these sermons into Spanish. 00:24:37.01\00:24:39.47 So he does that. By Sunday night of Thanksgiving weekend 00:24:39.87\00:24:42.81 he sends it out at 8 o'clock. 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.78 He sends it to ten people as a test pilot. 00:24:44.98\00:24:46.95 He thinks: "Lord, if You could just even give me 100 00:24:47.15\00:24:49.72 what a miracle. " Do you know, within 2 hours 00:24:49.92\00:24:52.79 750 people responded. Amen? 00:24:52.99\00:24:56.52 Amen! Amen! This is incredible. 00:24:56.73\00:24:58.13 So he thought: "Oh wow! " By the next evening 00:24:58.33\00:25:01.30 it was 1,500 people. He thought there must have been 00:25:01.50\00:25:04.90 some kind of a jinx or some kind of a fluke or something 00:25:05.10\00:25:07.80 so he confirmed it with each one of them 00:25:08.00\00:25:10.17 that yes, they all wanted to receive these Bible studies. 00:25:10.37\00:25:12.94 So now to this point he has trained 5,000 people 00:25:13.44\00:25:17.61 that we know of and then reached 80,000 people. 00:25:17.81\00:25:22.05 Just one young guy saying "I want to do something 00:25:22.25\00:25:24.09 for the Lord. " Wow! Amen! So he sends it to a friend. 00:25:24.29\00:25:26.45 They send it to a friend; those friends send it to a friend 00:25:26.65\00:25:29.22 and on and on and on and so that's how it happens. 00:25:29.42\00:25:31.13 I believe this is how God is going to finish the work. 00:25:31.33\00:25:33.06 So, you know, out of these 80,000 messages 00:25:33.26\00:25:36.23 that have been received, many have been by government 00:25:36.43\00:25:38.53 officials, pastors of different denominations, 00:25:38.73\00:25:41.07 anti-government forces, the commanders, 00:25:41.27\00:25:43.34 even criminals with drug cartels... Colombia. 00:25:43.54\00:25:46.01 Actually speaking of which I want to tell you about Maria. 00:25:46.51\00:25:49.81 Maria is a young woman. She was in an abusive relationship. 00:25:50.01\00:25:52.98 Her husband was actually a preacher 00:25:53.38\00:25:55.12 and he was having affairs on her and she became 00:25:55.32\00:25:57.65 so depressed. He lost his job and they divorced. 00:25:57.85\00:26:00.39 Well she went through a terrible time, but she found 00:26:00.79\00:26:03.32 the love of her life two years later. He was a good policeman 00:26:03.53\00:26:06.80 and they had two children. Well one of these times he was out 00:26:07.00\00:26:11.60 he discovered a huge drug shipment 00:26:11.80\00:26:16.27 and he turned it in to the precinct. 00:26:16.47\00:26:18.17 So those drug lords came after him and threatened his life. 00:26:18.57\00:26:23.58 Well one day when he was coming home 00:26:24.11\00:26:25.88 he parked his car and as he was getting out 00:26:26.08\00:26:30.02 sure enough: motorcyclists with machine guns 00:26:30.22\00:26:32.39 did a drive-by shooting shooting at him and his wife. 00:26:32.59\00:26:35.12 He dove over his wife and with his last breath said 00:26:35.32\00:26:37.49 "Take care of our precious children. " 00:26:37.69\00:26:39.09 So this crushed her, of course. Here the love of her life 00:26:39.79\00:26:42.76 and now she has lost him too. 00:26:42.96\00:26:44.37 Very shortly after that her mother passed away. 00:26:44.87\00:26:47.70 So she decided: "You know what? I miss him so much I'm going to 00:26:47.90\00:26:50.81 have a séance because I want to talk to them even though 00:26:51.01\00:26:53.11 they're dead. " So she starts doing this, right? 00:26:53.31\00:26:56.28 She becomes so suicidal, one night she's sitting in her home 00:26:56.78\00:26:59.68 in complete darkness ready to give up. 00:26:59.88\00:27:02.48 And do you know that the light of her phone began to shine? 00:27:02.88\00:27:07.12 And she looked on her phone and it was a message 00:27:07.32\00:27:10.16 from her sister. It was the AWR cell phone evangelism 00:27:10.36\00:27:14.70 audio text. Amen! Amen! She started to listen to it 00:27:14.90\00:27:17.67 and she began to be filled with hope. 00:27:17.87\00:27:19.83 She got to the section on the state of the dead 00:27:20.04\00:27:22.67 and she realized she'd been talking to demons. 00:27:22.87\00:27:25.17 You know, she got rid of all of her candles. 00:27:25.37\00:27:27.08 She got down on her knees and she asked for forgiveness. 00:27:27.28\00:27:29.58 "Lord, come into my life. I want to know the truth. " Amen! 00:27:29.78\00:27:32.81 And by doing that, the Lord impressed her to reach out 00:27:33.01\00:27:35.58 to those people that she hated the most: 00:27:35.78\00:27:38.09 to her ex-husband... her first husband... 00:27:38.29\00:27:40.16 and then also the killers of her second husband. 00:27:40.36\00:27:43.93 Wow! So she sent out a text 00:27:44.13\00:27:46.23 and said to her ex-husband: "I forgive you. 00:27:46.43\00:27:48.66 Do you want to know how and why I can do this? 00:27:48.86\00:27:51.33 I have some messages of hope to share with you. " 00:27:51.53\00:27:53.44 And he was in such shock he said: "Yes, please. " 00:27:53.84\00:27:57.67 She did that and then sent the messages of hope 00:27:57.87\00:28:00.44 the AWR Bible studies to him. 00:28:00.64\00:28:02.54 He is now attending the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:28:02.74\00:28:04.65 Amen? Amen! Amen! So then 00:28:04.85\00:28:06.58 the finale is that really... the killers... 00:28:06.98\00:28:11.15 Can you imagine sending texts to the killers? 00:28:11.35\00:28:13.19 She got ahold of their information 00:28:13.39\00:28:15.36 and there were three killers. She sent and did the same thing 00:28:15.56\00:28:17.96 to them. Two of them are currently studying right now. 00:28:18.16\00:28:21.96 Amen? God can use the cell phone! Amen. 00:28:22.16\00:28:25.73 Amen! Amen! That's a phenomenal testimony! 00:28:25.93\00:28:28.34 That's great, but it reminds me 00:28:28.54\00:28:31.41 Cami, Debbie that people around the world 00:28:31.61\00:28:33.68 many people just like Maria they're sitting in darkness. 00:28:33.88\00:28:36.95 They're in despair. Maybe they're depressed. 00:28:37.15\00:28:38.91 And they need a message of hope. And God has given each of us 00:28:39.31\00:28:42.65 incredible opportunities - each one of us - to share 00:28:42.85\00:28:45.79 right from our very cell phones! 00:28:45.99\00:28:48.62 Right! We can share these messages. 00:28:48.82\00:28:50.56 The shyest person can be an evangelist! 00:28:50.76\00:28:52.43 That's right. And you know Ellen White had a vision. 00:28:52.63\00:28:54.76 She talked about seeing streams of light 00:28:55.16\00:28:57.20 encircling the globe. She was talking about our publications. 00:28:57.40\00:29:00.10 But in today's world, think about what our publications 00:29:00.30\00:29:04.51 mean today. We can actually send in an instant 00:29:04.71\00:29:07.71 messages around the world - Amen - to people who are hurting 00:29:07.91\00:29:11.31 who are needing Jesus. 00:29:11.51\00:29:12.85 God wants us to use the tools that He has given us 00:29:12.98\00:29:15.38 to send messages of hope. To send these streams of light 00:29:15.58\00:29:17.99 around the world. Amen! Amen! 00:29:18.19\00:29:20.42 He's going to do miracles even still before He comes. 00:29:20.62\00:29:21.96 Amen! Thank you so much. Thank you so much. 00:29:21.99\00:29:24.23 AWR 360 is doing... using cell phones 00:29:24.43\00:29:27.93 to spread the gospel. Amen; praise God! Yes, 00:29:28.13\00:29:29.76 From broadcast to baptism. Yes, From broadcast to baptism. 00:29:29.96\00:29:33.13 All right. Thank you. Thank you so much. 00:29:33.34\00:29:34.67 Do you think they're just a little excited? 00:29:34.70\00:29:36.57 Doesn't that make you excited? 00:29:37.24\00:29:38.87 It should. It should because 00:29:39.07\00:29:41.74 sharing the gospel is an exciting venture. 00:29:41.94\00:29:44.58 And oh, wow! Look at here. 00:29:44.78\00:29:47.18 We have a couple of surgeons... a couple of doctors. 00:29:47.38\00:29:50.35 And we have Andrew Trecartin and his wife Megan. 00:29:50.75\00:29:54.82 Andrew is a general surgeon 00:29:55.22\00:29:56.89 and Megan is a family medicine physician. 00:29:57.09\00:29:59.79 And it looks like you are ready to go off 00:30:00.00\00:30:03.30 and start surgery. So tell me: this is actually about 00:30:03.50\00:30:07.27 Bere Hospital located in Chad. 00:30:07.47\00:30:10.41 Tell us a little about Bere Hospital and how you became 00:30:10.61\00:30:13.34 acquainted with it. So we first heard about Bere Hospital 00:30:13.54\00:30:16.21 when we heard about the work of James Appel. 00:30:16.41\00:30:18.78 And then my brother went to volunteer there as a student 00:30:18.98\00:30:22.15 missionary and I learned about the severe surgical needs. 00:30:22.35\00:30:25.79 And then Megan actually went before we were married 00:30:25.99\00:30:28.82 as a medical student there. 00:30:29.02\00:30:31.86 And I spent a month there and I was just amazed 00:30:32.06\00:30:34.33 at such primitive resources they have there 00:30:34.53\00:30:37.63 and how they were trying their best to take care of patients 00:30:37.83\00:30:40.07 and how even little things made such a big difference 00:30:40.47\00:30:44.47 in that community. 00:30:44.67\00:30:46.01 So then this last December we went to visit 00:30:46.04\00:30:49.31 and the verses that were going through our minds at that time 00:30:49.51\00:30:53.25 was: "Is not this the fast that I have chosen: 00:30:53.45\00:30:56.08 to loose the bands of wickedness, 00:30:56.28\00:30:57.62 to undo the heavy burdens, 00:30:57.79\00:30:59.12 and to let the oppressed go free 00:30:59.25\00:31:00.59 and that ye break every yoke. " 00:31:00.69\00:31:02.02 And we thought: You know, there's few people 00:31:02.52\00:31:06.16 qualified who are willing to go meet the severe need... 00:31:06.36\00:31:09.60 establish themselves in a country and meet the severe 00:31:09.80\00:31:12.50 need in Chad. And we're both willing, so we'd better go. " 00:31:12.70\00:31:15.90 Gotcha. That's incredible! That's really remarkable. 00:31:16.10\00:31:19.14 I want to know... You noticed when you went there 00:31:19.64\00:31:23.78 in Bere, I understand that the One-Day structures 00:31:23.98\00:31:27.22 have greatly improved the facilities on the campus. 00:31:27.42\00:31:30.55 So for those of us who are familiar with One-Day Church 00:31:30.95\00:31:33.46 who has also built One-Day Schools and Clinics 00:31:33.66\00:31:37.36 they've also had an impact on the campus of Bere Hospital. 00:31:37.56\00:31:40.96 And we're so grateful for that. 00:31:41.36\00:31:42.70 What has that done for Bere Hospital campus? 00:31:42.80\00:31:45.73 So the One-Day Hospital... There are basically several 00:31:46.23\00:31:49.14 different buildings. They've added a new maternity ward, 00:31:49.34\00:31:51.21 an ICU ward, an OR, 00:31:51.41\00:31:54.51 a private ward and lots of other... 00:31:54.71\00:31:56.75 It just expanded their ability to hold patients. 00:31:56.95\00:31:59.61 And some of them are still empty shells, though, 00:31:59.81\00:32:02.88 and we're wanting to fill those. 00:32:03.08\00:32:05.29 And they also provided housing for the physicians 00:32:06.05\00:32:09.66 and some of the people teaching in the nursing school 00:32:09.86\00:32:12.19 and the other things. We're actually going to live 00:32:12.39\00:32:13.73 in a One-Day structure when we move there. OK... 00:32:13.76\00:32:16.40 so it's really made a big difference in that community. 00:32:16.60\00:32:19.27 So you and your one-year-old daughter - yes - 00:32:19.47\00:32:22.04 Adelaide are going to be leaving soon to go to Chad. 00:32:22.24\00:32:25.51 That's correct. OK. 00:32:25.71\00:32:27.04 Now you mentioned some of them are shells... 00:32:27.08\00:32:29.74 you know, still waiting to be equipped. 00:32:29.94\00:32:31.51 So the offering for this year is to actually equip 00:32:31.71\00:32:34.95 those facilities - yes - and to have a couple of 00:32:35.15\00:32:38.25 additional operating rooms and equipment. 00:32:38.45\00:32:41.26 So what? Why do we need those? 00:32:41.46\00:32:44.93 I mean... So let me give you a little background 00:32:45.13\00:32:47.53 of the hospital. So the hospital is 104 beds 00:32:47.73\00:32:50.50 plus overflow capacity. 00:32:50.70\00:32:52.30 And they have a nursing school, really the best nursing school 00:32:52.50\00:32:56.17 in the country which is about to graduate their first 3-year 00:32:56.37\00:32:59.67 nursing degree students which I believe will 00:32:59.87\00:33:01.61 be helping to transform the quality of care 00:33:01.81\00:33:04.28 throughout the country. 00:33:04.48\00:33:05.81 And they see about 60 new patients per day 00:33:05.91\00:33:08.52 and perform over 1,400 surgical operations per year. 00:33:08.72\00:33:12.22 Most all of those operations are in a single old dilapidated 00:33:12.82\00:33:16.86 operating room. And just to put it in perspective 00:33:17.06\00:33:20.10 they're all... most of them done by a single surgeon. 00:33:20.30\00:33:23.37 A surgeon here in the US... a busy surgeon... performs about 00:33:23.77\00:33:27.24 500 operations per year... so about 1/3 of that. 00:33:27.44\00:33:30.67 And there's times when they are 00:33:31.17\00:33:34.58 doing 200 operating cases in a month. 00:33:34.78\00:33:38.21 And the team is working from before sunrise 00:33:38.41\00:33:41.68 in the morning until late at night after sunset. 00:33:41.88\00:33:46.05 Not stopping for lunch; not eating dinner until after dark. 00:33:46.25\00:33:49.86 And there's times when they'll be operating on one patient 00:33:50.46\00:33:54.20 on the table and a pregnant mother will 00:33:54.40\00:33:57.23 come in having seizures requir- ing an emergency C-section. 00:33:57.43\00:34:01.14 And they'll have to wheel her 00:34:01.70\00:34:05.04 next to the one patient that's already open on the table 00:34:05.44\00:34:09.41 and two people will be working back-to-back 00:34:09.61\00:34:12.21 on the two patient simul- taneously in the same room. 00:34:12.41\00:34:14.62 Wow! Sounds like a MASH unit! 00:34:14.82\00:34:17.42 OK, so tell us... Megan, you were sharing with me 00:34:18.25\00:34:21.26 some of the... describing to me some of the need 00:34:21.46\00:34:24.49 for these services. Yes. 00:34:24.69\00:34:28.66 I think there's a picture of a group of women that will... 00:34:28.86\00:34:30.97 may have seen or already seen. 00:34:31.13\00:34:32.83 They repair fistulas there, and to describe fistulas 00:34:33.03\00:34:36.44 I first need to tell you that being a woman in Chad is 00:34:36.64\00:34:39.54 not a good thing. Childbirth there 00:34:39.74\00:34:42.91 is very very dangerous. One in fifteen women 00:34:43.11\00:34:46.31 die in childbirth in Chad. 00:34:46.51\00:34:48.58 In the States that's like 1 in 4,200 or something 00:34:49.38\00:34:52.25 like that. And so often women don't have anyone attending them 00:34:52.45\00:34:56.86 when they're in labor and they can labor for weeks. 00:34:57.06\00:34:59.03 Now when a baby's head is in that part of a woman's body 00:34:59.23\00:35:01.66 for a long period of time there's no circulation 00:35:01.86\00:35:04.93 and those tissues die. 00:35:05.13\00:35:06.57 And if the baby doesn't get out soon enough the baby dies. 00:35:06.77\00:35:09.07 And so then this woman is left with no baby 00:35:09.47\00:35:12.67 and dead tissue with a hole between her bladder 00:35:12.87\00:35:15.78 and her birth canal 00:35:15.98\00:35:17.61 which basically means she smells like urine all the time 00:35:18.38\00:35:22.88 and constantly is leaking. 00:35:23.72\00:35:25.55 And these women are ostracized by their families. 00:35:26.29\00:35:30.83 Often rejected by their husbands. 00:35:31.03\00:35:33.03 Are really outcasts in society. 00:35:33.83\00:35:36.16 And so the hospital there... they'll have fistula weeks 00:35:37.63\00:35:40.54 where they'll advertise and women will come in 00:35:40.74\00:35:42.70 to have their fistulas repaired. 00:35:42.90\00:35:44.74 And they could have had their fistulas for 20 years. 00:35:44.94\00:35:47.31 One woman wanted to commit suicide before she got 00:35:48.21\00:35:52.18 the surgery. So when they come to get surgery 00:35:52.38\00:35:55.28 it's a very complicated operation as you can imagine. 00:35:55.48\00:36:00.02 They stay at the hospital a long time, and while they're there 00:36:00.86\00:36:02.96 they get a Godpod, they get a picture book, 00:36:03.16\00:36:05.69 and they get also a new dress so they don't smell. 00:36:05.89\00:36:10.13 So I want you to hear this. So when they come in 00:36:10.33\00:36:12.63 and they receive those physical services to restore their life 00:36:12.83\00:36:15.80 back to them. Then we give them something that can help 00:36:16.00\00:36:19.17 their spiritual lives. So My Bible First is an ASi member 00:36:19.37\00:36:23.45 is a ministry, and so we have those picture books 00:36:23.65\00:36:26.28 in their language that they receive 00:36:26.48\00:36:28.52 as well as what we call a "Godpod" which is? 00:36:28.72\00:36:30.82 It's a MP3 player with an audio version of the Bible 00:36:31.02\00:36:34.69 in their language. Incredible! So there's a whole lot more 00:36:34.89\00:36:38.53 than physical healing that is happening at Bere Hospital. 00:36:38.73\00:36:41.86 We don't have much time left. I just want you to tell us 00:36:42.16\00:36:44.67 about Somidy. OK. So Chad is one of the countries 00:36:44.87\00:36:51.61 in the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery 00:36:51.81\00:36:54.44 where over 90% of the population has no access to surgical care. 00:36:54.64\00:36:58.81 And there's more people dying of lack of access to 00:36:59.01\00:37:01.08 safe surgical care than from malaria, HIV, and TB combined. 00:37:01.28\00:37:05.55 There's no surgical training program in the country. 00:37:05.75\00:37:08.69 And in that context, I want to tell you the story of Somidy. 00:37:09.09\00:37:11.39 Somidy started work at Bere Adventist Hospital 00:37:11.59\00:37:13.83 in the 1970's as a teenager 00:37:14.03\00:37:16.23 sweeping, raking leaves. But he worked so hard 00:37:16.43\00:37:20.20 that he rose through the ranks to become a janitor 00:37:20.40\00:37:24.41 in the hospital. And he worked very hard keeping the hospital 00:37:24.61\00:37:27.58 clean. But his curiosity still unsatisfied, he started helping 00:37:27.78\00:37:31.15 the nurses learning how to take BP and provide medications. 00:37:31.35\00:37:36.72 He was diligent and had integrity 00:37:37.39\00:37:40.42 and so was recruited into the operating room 00:37:40.62\00:37:42.32 and started out scrubbing surgical instruments, 00:37:42.52\00:37:44.59 autoclaving them, sterilizing them. 00:37:44.79\00:37:46.76 But he learned quickly and was so available 00:37:46.96\00:37:50.73 that visiting surgeons began recruiting him 00:37:50.93\00:37:53.30 to assist them in the operating room. Learned how to perform 00:37:53.50\00:37:55.90 the sterile surgical scrub. 00:37:56.10\00:37:57.47 Put a sterile gown and gloves on and hand them instruments. 00:37:57.67\00:38:00.58 Tie sutures; cut sutures. 00:38:00.98\00:38:03.04 And he did this for years. And watched, assisted with 00:38:03.45\00:38:06.85 hundreds of operations. 00:38:07.05\00:38:08.38 There was then a time when there was no doctor 00:38:08.58\00:38:11.25 in the hospital. And one day a woman came 00:38:11.45\00:38:15.39 who needed an urgent C-section 00:38:15.59\00:38:18.59 and there was nobody to do it. 00:38:18.79\00:38:21.56 The hospital administrator because Somidy had 00:38:21.76\00:38:24.27 observed hundreds of these, assisted with hundreds 00:38:24.47\00:38:27.37 of C-sections with other surgeons, 00:38:27.57\00:38:29.47 asked him - in fact, begged him - to perform the operation. 00:38:29.67\00:38:33.38 His fellow nurses begged him. 00:38:33.58\00:38:35.18 The patient's family and the patient herself 00:38:35.58\00:38:37.35 begged him to perform the operation. 00:38:37.55\00:38:39.31 And so with no formal medical training 00:38:39.71\00:38:42.22 but a long experience assisting he performed the operation 00:38:42.42\00:38:46.39 and it was a success. He saved her life. 00:38:46.59\00:38:49.92 He continued to invest tremendous effort in learning 00:38:50.33\00:38:53.33 surgical technique. Visiting surgeons 00:38:53.53\00:38:56.70 put a lot of effort into training him. 00:38:56.90\00:38:59.03 And then when civil war broke out 00:38:59.43\00:39:03.27 at times Somidy was held at gunpoint, asked to operate 00:39:03.47\00:39:07.64 on a soldier. Or another day depending on who occupied 00:39:07.84\00:39:11.58 the territory operate on one of the rebels. 00:39:11.78\00:39:13.78 At a time when the hospital was about to close 00:39:14.62\00:39:18.42 the salary was $10 per month. The hospital was little more 00:39:18.92\00:39:22.52 than a run-down chicken coop in resemblance 00:39:22.72\00:39:25.49 Somidy kept the hospital open. 00:39:26.29\00:39:28.56 He continued operating. 00:39:29.20\00:39:31.57 Finally in 2006 HI with the help of donors 00:39:32.40\00:39:36.44 sent Somidy to nursing school. In 2009 00:39:36.64\00:39:39.67 he graduated with his first official medical diploma 00:39:39.87\00:39:43.65 of nursing school. And now ten years later 00:39:43.85\00:39:47.72 in 2019 Somidy retired. 00:39:47.92\00:39:50.85 It's time to train the next generation of Adventist surgeons 00:39:51.25\00:39:54.72 in Africa. Surgeons who will work as 00:39:54.92\00:39:59.39 hard as Somidy. Surgeons who will be as dedicated 00:39:59.59\00:40:03.33 to their patients as he was and who will save lives 00:40:03.53\00:40:07.64 and open the door to the Holy Spirit to save souls. 00:40:07.84\00:40:10.64 The equipping of the operating rooms will help do just that. 00:40:11.04\00:40:14.78 Thank you so much, the Trecartins, for your dedication 00:40:14.98\00:40:18.61 and your commitment to the gospel to go into a land 00:40:18.81\00:40:21.98 unheard of with such desperate conditions 00:40:22.38\00:40:26.45 to be able to do that.
