00:07:12.53\00:07:14.10 Wayside Christian Mission was founded in 1957 00:07:14.13\00:07:18.03 by Reverend Dick Anderson. 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.17 Since that time, we opened with a shelter for 10 men 00:07:20.20\00:07:25.14 on December 8, 1957. 00:07:25.17\00:07:27.68 Today, we house anywhere up to 650 men, women, 00:07:27.71\00:07:31.71 and families every night. 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.38 Every night? Every night. 00:07:33.42\00:07:34.75 Six hundred and fifty people are coming there. 00:07:34.78\00:07:37.79 Now, our specific ASI project is called Soles for Souls. 00:07:37.82\00:07:43.32 So we're providing shoes and socks for people. 00:07:43.36\00:07:45.96 Is that really a big need? 00:07:45.99\00:07:47.83 That is definitely a big need. 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.47 A lot of the homeless folks live out in camps, 00:07:50.50\00:07:53.30 they live on the streets. 00:07:53.34\00:07:54.94 They have only what they carry with them. 00:07:54.97\00:07:57.24 And we do see them coming in without shoes, 00:07:57.27\00:08:00.31 and especially without socks. 00:08:00.34\00:08:02.54 And so we're always trying to find these things for folks. 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.88 In addition, we run a good Samaritan patrol. 00:08:05.91\00:08:08.85 We've done that since 1988, 00:08:08.88\00:08:10.62 where we actually do ministry 00:08:10.65\00:08:12.65 out on the streets and in the camps. 00:08:12.69\00:08:14.89 And so anytime we can find resources to help folks, 00:08:14.92\00:08:18.13 we're very grateful for that help. 00:08:18.16\00:08:20.03 That's fantastic. 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.40 So the Wayside Christian Mission, 00:08:21.43\00:08:24.43 I was reading in the newspaper, doing a little bit of homework, 00:08:24.47\00:08:27.67 and I found out that 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.77 the mission has done a great deal 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.87 to help the people of Louisville. 00:08:32.91\00:08:35.14 Can you tell us a little bit 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.51 about the challenge of homelessness 00:08:36.54\00:08:38.68 here in this city? 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.48 We have a lot of homeless folks in this city, 00:08:40.52\00:08:43.39 around about 7,000 people. 00:08:43.42\00:08:45.62 We only have 1,800 shelter beds in the city. 00:08:45.65\00:08:50.29 And so there's a lot of need for folks. 00:08:50.33\00:08:54.46 We at Wayside have a full gamut of services 00:08:54.50\00:08:58.13 from emergency shelter to transitional shelter, 00:08:58.17\00:09:02.30 to permanent supportive housing. 00:09:02.34\00:09:04.51 And in December, 00:09:04.54\00:09:05.87 we actually opened a low-barrier shelter 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.94 that has an additional 100 people. 00:09:08.98\00:09:11.61 So we have a great need here. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.78 And anytime we can partner with folks to help, 00:09:13.82\00:09:17.65 that's really important. 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.19 About one third of the homeless people nationwide, 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.29 and it holds true in Louisville as well, 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.89 are homeless due to substance abuse issues. 00:09:24.93\00:09:27.70 So we run a large recovery program 00:09:27.73\00:09:31.20 for men and for women. 00:09:31.23\00:09:33.10 And in addition, we do job training, 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.27 we do parenting classes. 00:09:35.30\00:09:37.21 We do a lot of services in conjunction 00:09:37.24\00:09:39.64 with the universities here 00:09:39.67\00:09:42.48 so we can help people get back on their feet 00:09:42.51\00:09:45.31 and live a good self-sufficient life. 00:09:45.35\00:09:48.58 Well, again, Nina, we're just so glad 00:09:48.62\00:09:50.39 that we can partner with you 00:09:50.42\00:09:51.75 in this small part of the mission. 00:09:51.79\00:09:53.66 And ASI family, 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.02 I want to encourage you once again. 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.03 If you have not yet put your pair of shoes or socks 00:09:57.06\00:10:01.50 in the receptacles 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.16 that are found by the registration booth. 00:10:03.20\00:10:06.33 Please do so today or tomorrow. 00:10:06.37\00:10:09.10 Thank you so much. God bless you. 00:10:09.14\00:10:10.67 Thank you. Thank you very much. 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.27 This morning, Philip, 00:10:15.28\00:10:16.61 we want to take just a little bit of time 00:10:16.64\00:10:18.71 to talk about ASI 00:10:18.75\00:10:21.48 and kind of its strategy going forward. 00:10:21.52\00:10:25.25 ASI was founded as most of you know in 1947. 00:10:25.29\00:10:29.26 Now that's just a few years ago. 00:10:29.29\00:10:30.76 In fact, it was before I was born. 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.63 Me too. Philip, you too? 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.00 Yeah, absolutely. Oh, wow. 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.36 Okay, well, we're... 00:10:35.40\00:10:38.27 So the organization has a few years on it. 00:10:38.30\00:10:41.14 And ASI, the executive team 00:10:41.17\00:10:42.90 has spent the last couple of years 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.81 thinking about the future of ASI. 00:10:44.84\00:10:47.54 But when you think about the future of something, 00:10:47.58\00:10:49.61 you also have to think about 00:10:49.64\00:10:50.98 the history of the organization. 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.05 And so this morning 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.42 we're gonna just talk a little bit about that. 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.02 ASI was founded as a result 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.26 mostly of the work going on at Madison College. 00:11:00.29\00:11:03.22 Now in your registration packet, 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.79 you received a little booklet 00:11:05.83\00:11:08.56 called ASI Strategic Plan 2019, 00:11:08.60\00:11:12.83 Sharing Christ with the World in our Generation. 00:11:12.87\00:11:16.47 And so if you have that with you this morning, 00:11:16.50\00:11:18.61 we're going to spend a little time looking at this. 00:11:18.64\00:11:21.18 And as I was thinking, I said, well, it's kind of dry, 00:11:21.21\00:11:23.75 but it may be that it's really exciting, Philip, 00:11:23.78\00:11:27.05 because what we're talking about 00:11:27.08\00:11:28.88 is how to take ASI to the future. 00:11:28.92\00:11:30.95 Amen? Amen. 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.52 We want ASI to be a strong organization 00:11:32.55\00:11:35.12 until Jesus comes. 00:11:35.16\00:11:36.49 That's right. 00:11:36.52\00:11:37.86 Because we believe that if we empower the lay people, 00:11:37.89\00:11:40.70 we can help get the job done. 00:11:40.73\00:11:42.10 They're just not enough preachers. 00:11:42.13\00:11:43.47 Now, Philip, if you would share with the audience today 00:11:43.50\00:11:47.90 what is the purpose of ASI? 00:11:47.94\00:11:49.67 What is the purpose? 00:11:49.70\00:11:51.27 The executive committee spent a lot of time on these words, 00:11:51.31\00:11:53.48 just share with us what is the purpose? 00:11:53.51\00:11:54.98 Steve, I'm so excited to share the purpose. 00:11:55.01\00:11:56.85 The purpose of ASI is to connect 00:11:56.88\00:11:59.51 and equip lay ministries, business people, 00:11:59.55\00:12:02.08 and professionals, and their families 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.32 to regularly and passionately 00:12:04.35\00:12:07.12 share Christ in the marketplace, 00:12:07.16\00:12:08.82 and to actively support the Adventist church's message 00:12:08.86\00:12:12.49 of sharing the three angels' messages 00:12:12.53\00:12:14.90 of God's love and grace 00:12:14.93\00:12:16.46 in preparation for Jesus' soon return. 00:12:16.50\00:12:20.54 Philip, I'd like to emphasize 00:12:20.57\00:12:21.90 a couple of things in that statement 00:12:21.94\00:12:23.27 because when we just read it, maybe it doesn't fully... 00:12:23.30\00:12:26.81 We don't fully grasp exactly what we're saying here. 00:12:26.84\00:12:30.38 Awesome. 00:12:30.41\00:12:31.75 We're saying we have a target audience. 00:12:31.78\00:12:33.11 And the target audience that we have is the lay people, 00:12:33.15\00:12:36.99 first of all. 00:12:37.02\00:12:38.35 And then within the group of lay people 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.12 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:12:40.16\00:12:41.49 we focus on several subgroups of that... 00:12:41.52\00:12:44.36 That's right. 00:12:44.39\00:12:45.73 Business owners, professionals... 00:12:45.76\00:12:48.63 And ministry people. And ministries. 00:12:48.66\00:12:50.57 That's right. 00:12:50.60\00:12:51.93 So business owners, professionals, and ministries, 00:12:51.97\00:12:53.74 that's the target group, the focus group of ASI. 00:12:53.77\00:12:58.17 Now, we included something here 00:12:58.21\00:13:00.74 though an interesting word we said and their... 00:13:00.78\00:13:03.04 And their families. 00:13:03.08\00:13:04.41 Families. That's right. 00:13:04.45\00:13:05.78 How many of you have family? 00:13:05.81\00:13:07.15 Anybody here have family? Amen. 00:13:07.18\00:13:09.15 Do you love your family? Absolutely. 00:13:09.18\00:13:10.89 Do you want to involve them 00:13:10.92\00:13:12.25 in something exciting, like ASI? 00:13:12.29\00:13:13.92 Absolutely. Yes. 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.29 In fact, I just tell you, my daughter is here. 00:13:15.32\00:13:18.26 And I have two grandchildren here. 00:13:18.29\00:13:21.63 And I have my daughter's husband here. 00:13:21.66\00:13:23.57 And then the cousins and their families came. 00:13:23.60\00:13:25.73 That's five cousins, right, Steve? 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.10 Yeah, five more cousins. 00:13:27.14\00:13:28.94 So there's like... 00:13:28.97\00:13:30.31 We're doing a little takeover here 00:13:30.34\00:13:32.24 in the kids department 00:13:32.27\00:13:33.84 since so we're gonna apologize for that. 00:13:33.88\00:13:36.08 I've got six-month old PJ, Philip Jr. men. 00:13:36.11\00:13:39.08 And I want to get him involved in ASI, 00:13:39.11\00:13:41.62 even now I'm teaching him about it. 00:13:41.65\00:13:43.28 Amen. Amen. 00:13:43.32\00:13:44.72 Start them early. That's right. 00:13:44.75\00:13:46.15 All right, good. 00:13:46.19\00:13:47.52 So, Philip, ASI has for years had a motto. 00:13:47.56\00:13:53.23 What is that motto? 00:13:53.26\00:13:54.60 Our motto is sharing Christ in the marketplace. 00:13:54.63\00:13:58.17 That's our motto. 00:13:58.20\00:13:59.53 Now if you've heard the term ASI, 00:13:59.57\00:14:00.90 you probably have connected with it 00:14:00.94\00:14:02.70 that understanding 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.07 that we're here to share Christ in the marketplace. 00:14:04.11\00:14:06.98 I want to share though now, there are some things 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.91 that are very, very important to ASI. 00:14:08.94\00:14:12.58 And we've made the list quite short 00:14:12.61\00:14:14.58 so that we can try and remember it 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.25 because, you know, 00:14:16.28\00:14:18.05 we have to make things easy, right? 00:14:18.09\00:14:20.16 Right. 00:14:20.19\00:14:21.52 So there's just three things 00:14:21.56\00:14:22.89 that we think are very, very important. 00:14:22.92\00:14:25.56 And we've kind of reduced it down to three things. 00:14:25.59\00:14:28.50 First of all, 00:14:28.53\00:14:30.23 if you're involved in ASI in any way, 00:14:30.27\00:14:33.34 whether as a member or as a chapter, officer, 00:14:33.37\00:14:38.54 or in the leadership of the national 00:14:38.57\00:14:40.71 or on the ASI board... 00:14:40.74\00:14:42.21 Right. 00:14:42.24\00:14:43.58 We believe that every individual in that 00:14:43.61\00:14:47.25 and in those categories should be committed 00:14:47.28\00:14:51.45 to the Seventh-day Adventist Church and its mission. 00:14:51.49\00:14:54.79 It's actually under our Values if you want to follow along 00:14:54.82\00:14:57.26 in the PowerPoint slide under Values. 00:14:57.29\00:14:58.89 That's the first thing, committed to Adventist Church. 00:14:58.93\00:15:01.20 Committed to the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:15:01.23\00:15:03.33 and its values. 00:15:03.37\00:15:04.70 If they're not committed to that, like, 00:15:04.73\00:15:06.17 you could go somewhere else, you know, Okay. 00:15:06.20\00:15:09.20 There are a lot of organizations 00:15:09.24\00:15:11.01 in this world, right? 00:15:11.04\00:15:12.37 You can go check it on the internet, 00:15:12.41\00:15:13.91 nonprofit organizations. 00:15:13.94\00:15:15.28 They could join any one of those, right? 00:15:15.31\00:15:16.64 That's right. That's right. 00:15:16.68\00:15:18.35 But what we are about is 00:15:18.38\00:15:20.12 we are committed to the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:15:20.15\00:15:22.55 and its mission. 00:15:22.58\00:15:24.25 That is a powerful thought 00:15:24.29\00:15:26.99 to think we have the opportunity to partner 00:15:27.02\00:15:30.23 with the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:15:30.26\00:15:32.59 Secondly, 00:15:32.63\00:15:34.16 this organization is empowered by lay-driven leadership. 00:15:34.20\00:15:39.33 Amen. 00:15:39.37\00:15:40.70 Now you see a lot of people running around here, 00:15:40.74\00:15:43.61 and you'll see a lot of people doing things. 00:15:43.64\00:15:46.81 But these are volunteers. 00:15:46.84\00:15:51.01 Lay people who volunteer their time, 00:15:51.05\00:15:54.28 their energy, their passion... 00:15:54.32\00:15:56.28 Their talents. 00:15:56.32\00:15:57.65 Their talent and their resources... 00:15:57.69\00:15:59.02 That's right. To help us. 00:15:59.05\00:16:00.39 Amen. 00:16:00.42\00:16:01.76 Philip, the last thing is 00:16:01.79\00:16:04.59 if you're associated with ASI, 00:16:04.63\00:16:07.16 you should be actively engaged in ministry. 00:16:07.20\00:16:10.80 Actively engaged in ministry. Actively. 00:16:10.83\00:16:13.40 I like the way you said actively. 00:16:13.44\00:16:14.87 Yeah. Got to do something. 00:16:14.90\00:16:17.27 And you need to be doing it all the time, 00:16:17.31\00:16:19.37 not just now and then. 00:16:19.41\00:16:21.14 Yeah, not just coming to church and sitting on the pew 00:16:21.18\00:16:23.58 but getting involved. 00:16:23.61\00:16:26.45 Philip, our strategy to accomplish this 00:16:26.48\00:16:28.62 and take us to the future 00:16:28.65\00:16:30.35 is that we would continue to plan 00:16:30.39\00:16:33.22 and execute a powerful annual convention. 00:16:33.25\00:16:36.42 Amen. 00:16:36.46\00:16:37.79 You know, this in fact is... 00:16:37.83\00:16:39.79 The way I would describe it is the showcase 00:16:39.83\00:16:41.96 of what you as members are doing throughout the year. 00:16:42.00\00:16:44.93 That's right. 00:16:44.97\00:16:46.30 It's not to showcase, Philip, or me, 00:16:46.33\00:16:47.77 or whatever else, 00:16:47.80\00:16:49.14 it's to showcase what our members 00:16:49.17\00:16:50.71 are doing throughout the year. 00:16:50.74\00:16:52.17 Our exhibit hall is full of ministries doing things. 00:16:52.21\00:16:55.18 It's amazing to go in the exhibit hall 00:16:55.21\00:16:56.85 and just see what's happening there. 00:16:56.88\00:16:58.55 It really is. Okay. 00:16:58.58\00:17:00.62 The other thing that's really important, 00:17:00.65\00:17:02.05 as we looked at the future on a strategy 00:17:02.08\00:17:04.62 is that we be collaborating. 00:17:04.65\00:17:07.06 We're not out here to do something by ourselves, 00:17:07.09\00:17:09.06 but we're going to collaborate. 00:17:09.09\00:17:10.79 The other thing is we're going to innovate. 00:17:10.83\00:17:12.29 That's right. We're going to innovate. 00:17:12.33\00:17:13.76 We're known as an entrepreneurial 00:17:13.80\00:17:16.03 kind of organization. 00:17:16.06\00:17:17.73 People who think about new ideas, 00:17:17.77\00:17:19.43 and then just don't think about them, 00:17:19.47\00:17:20.84 they go do something. 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.20 Yes. 00:17:22.24\00:17:23.57 So innovators and collaborating with our church. 00:17:23.61\00:17:25.77 The last thing on that list of strategies is 00:17:25.81\00:17:27.88 we want to engage the next generation. 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.45 And so today, I hope that as you look around 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.61 and you see young people here, 00:17:32.65\00:17:33.98 you will encourage them to come back. 00:17:34.02\00:17:36.15 So we're happy with that. 00:17:36.18\00:17:37.62 Philip, I want to end this morning though 00:17:37.65\00:17:38.99 by talking about something that's really on my heart. 00:17:39.02\00:17:42.06 And that's the opportunity. 00:17:42.09\00:17:43.63 Yes. 00:17:43.66\00:17:45.83 Philip, just think about this for a moment. 00:17:45.86\00:17:49.10 Can you imagine what would happen? 00:17:49.13\00:17:51.97 I just want you to think this morning for a minute. 00:17:52.00\00:17:54.67 If every single Seventh-day Adventist 00:17:54.70\00:17:58.91 business person, 00:17:58.94\00:18:01.91 professional, 00:18:01.94\00:18:03.78 and ministry person was 100% engaged 00:18:03.81\00:18:08.98 in taking this three angels' message to the world. 00:18:09.02\00:18:14.66 Wow! 00:18:14.69\00:18:17.36 With about 19 million members worldwide. 00:18:17.39\00:18:22.06 I don't know how many of those are business 00:18:22.10\00:18:23.73 and professional people, but there's a good number. 00:18:23.77\00:18:25.90 Yes. 00:18:25.93\00:18:27.27 There's a lot of lay people involved in ministry. 00:18:27.30\00:18:30.11 But can you imagine what would happen 00:18:30.14\00:18:32.27 to the work of God 00:18:32.31\00:18:35.04 if all of us were all in? 00:18:35.08\00:18:39.01 Like the 12 disciples, 00:18:39.05\00:18:40.38 we could be known as the ones 00:18:40.42\00:18:41.78 that turned the world upside down for Jesus Christ. 00:18:41.82\00:18:45.62 Today, we pray that God will bless you 00:18:45.65\00:18:47.26 and your experience here at ASI, 00:18:47.29\00:18:49.46 and that you would join us in the mission of ASI 00:18:49.49\00:18:52.79 of taking the gospel to the world 00:18:52.83\00:18:54.80 in this generation. 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.16 Amen. 00:18:56.20\00:18:57.53 Hey, everyone, I'm with Sandra 00:20:59.75\00:21:01.86 who is the Executive Director 00:21:01.89\00:21:03.43 for Adventist Colleges Abroad or ACA. 00:21:03.46\00:21:06.29 Sandra, tell me how does ACA contribute to the mission 00:21:06.33\00:21:10.00 of a Seventh-day Adventist Church? 00:21:10.03\00:21:12.40 Good morning. 00:21:12.43\00:21:15.14 I will answer your question in just one second. 00:21:15.17\00:21:17.87 Okay. 00:21:17.91\00:21:19.24 First, I would like to tell you all 00:21:19.27\00:21:20.91 that confirm that you receive this magazine in your bags. 00:21:20.94\00:21:26.92 And here you have a lot of information already 00:21:26.95\00:21:30.79 about these programs and who they serve, 00:21:30.82\00:21:35.49 about the countries 00:21:35.52\00:21:36.86 where our young people can go and study. 00:21:36.89\00:21:40.46 Every registration bag, so if you look in your bag, 00:21:40.50\00:21:43.06 you can see the magazine. 00:21:43.10\00:21:44.90 So how does Adventist Colleges Abroad 00:21:44.93\00:21:47.34 contribute to our church mission 00:21:47.37\00:21:49.24 in many ways and very powerful ways? 00:21:49.27\00:21:52.17 Nelson Mandela said that, I'm going to paraphrase. 00:21:52.21\00:21:58.35 But if you talk to somebody in a foreign language, 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.95 you are talking to their head. 00:22:00.98\00:22:02.75 But if you are talking to them in their native language, 00:22:02.78\00:22:05.62 you talk to their heart. 00:22:05.65\00:22:06.99 Amen. 00:22:07.02\00:22:08.36 Our mission in our church, 00:22:08.39\00:22:09.92 whatever we do in our different ministries, 00:22:09.96\00:22:12.79 we all have the same goal, which is reaching hearts. 00:22:12.83\00:22:17.30 And so ACA also contributes to that goal 00:22:17.33\00:22:21.24 by equipping our young people with the knowledge of language. 00:22:21.27\00:22:25.97 We can't give a message if we don't have words, 00:22:26.01\00:22:28.91 if we don't have the language. 00:22:28.94\00:22:31.51 Did you know that in America right here at home, 00:22:31.55\00:22:36.82 there is no official language. 00:22:36.85\00:22:39.32 And that is because 00:22:39.35\00:22:41.16 there are 350 languages spoken right here at home 00:22:41.19\00:22:46.83 in the United States. 00:22:46.86\00:22:48.33 So we are equipping our young people to do mission, 00:22:48.36\00:22:52.30 not only in the world but here and at right at home. 00:22:52.33\00:22:56.67 So we send them to 11 countries. 00:22:56.71\00:22:59.31 Wow. 00:22:59.34\00:23:00.68 And we mostly send university students. 00:23:00.71\00:23:04.71 And the preferred experience that we advise them all 00:23:04.75\00:23:08.68 to do is one academic year 00:23:08.72\00:23:11.72 because not only they are learning more language, 00:23:11.75\00:23:14.59 but they are getting an experience 00:23:14.62\00:23:16.49 that they will never forget, 00:23:16.52\00:23:18.56 and that will impact their life for ministry. 00:23:18.59\00:23:21.56 What are some of the countries you send them to? 00:26:42.90\00:26:46.23 Debbie, good morning. 00:26:46.27\00:26:47.60 Amazon Lifesavers is a ministry 00:26:47.64\00:26:49.00 that connects lay people with the Northwest Brazil union 00:26:49.04\00:26:53.04 to do church planting. 00:26:53.07\00:26:55.71 And where do you do this church planting? 00:26:55.74\00:26:57.81 So the Amazon is a big basin, 00:26:57.85\00:27:00.35 actually is in several countries, 00:27:00.38\00:27:02.35 and we are in the northwest area of Brazil, 00:27:02.38\00:27:05.49 working in the jungle areas in the northwest of Brazil. 00:27:05.52\00:27:09.42 So exactly what do you do there? 00:27:09.46\00:27:11.93 So we actually look to do church planting global missions 00:27:11.96\00:27:16.50 and initiative with the local lay people 00:27:16.53\00:27:19.80 to take volunteers out into the jungle 00:27:19.83\00:27:23.37 and plant churches 00:27:23.41\00:27:24.74 where the Adventist church has never entered before. 00:27:24.77\00:27:26.94 So we do that using various ways. 00:27:26.98\00:27:29.04 For example, we actually use mission groups on boats. 00:27:29.08\00:27:32.45 And we will travel out on boats 00:27:32.48\00:27:34.58 into the jungle with a group of 25 to 30 people 00:27:34.62\00:27:37.72 and serve the community. 00:27:37.75\00:27:39.25 So you can imagine a group of young people 00:27:39.29\00:27:41.76 sleeping on a hammock, heading out onto a boat 00:27:41.79\00:27:44.03 and working in the community to reach what their needs are. 00:27:44.06\00:27:47.86 For example, this very month 00:27:47.90\00:27:49.96 we had a group that went out into the jungle 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.13 in a village that has never had an Adventist in the area. 00:27:52.17\00:27:56.50 And we went in, and we put in a well, 00:27:56.54\00:27:59.11 and we plumbed the whole village. 00:27:59.14\00:28:01.64 The group came in and put water in. 00:28:01.68\00:28:03.45 You can see the picture here. 00:28:03.48\00:28:04.81 This actually was this month 00:28:04.85\00:28:06.88 what happened is these people live on the bank of the river, 00:28:06.92\00:28:09.55 but they don't have fresh drinking water. 00:28:09.58\00:28:11.55 And the group came in, they put in the water, 00:28:11.59\00:28:13.66 and they went door to door 00:28:13.69\00:28:15.49 into the little jungle village huts 00:28:15.52\00:28:17.83 and turned on the faucet with the people 00:28:17.86\00:28:19.69 for the very first time. 00:28:19.73\00:28:21.06 This is a picture of the kids 00:28:21.10\00:28:22.56 playing in the water for the first time. 00:28:22.60\00:28:24.77 That night if you can imagine 00:28:24.80\00:28:26.67 these people never had an Adventist church, 00:28:26.70\00:28:28.04 that night, we had our very first meeting in the village 00:28:28.07\00:28:30.97 and every single person in the whole village 00:28:31.01\00:28:33.34 came to find out 00:28:33.38\00:28:34.71 who these people are and what they have to say. 00:28:34.74\00:28:36.98 So that's really wonderful. 00:28:37.01\00:28:38.65 But help me understand this, 00:28:38.68\00:28:40.45 this all you do is 'cause ASI boats in water? 00:28:40.48\00:28:44.89 No, Debbie. 00:28:44.92\00:28:46.42 We are all about church planting. 00:28:46.45\00:28:48.66 So we believe exactly what Jesus did. 00:28:48.69\00:28:51.03 As we work with the people, meet their needs, 00:28:51.06\00:28:54.50 we can gain their confidence. 00:28:54.53\00:28:56.20 And through this work, health fairs, medical work, 00:28:56.23\00:28:59.87 dental work, putting in water, putting in village gardens, 00:28:59.90\00:29:04.37 then we can place in Bible workers. 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.94 So we have a program that we have Bible training school, 00:29:06.98\00:29:11.05 and we send them out two by two. 00:29:11.08\00:29:13.72 You'll see a picture here 00:29:13.75\00:29:15.08 of two of our Bible workers going out, 00:29:15.12\00:29:16.75 and they will live for over a year 00:29:16.79\00:29:19.32 in a jungle village with the Indian people 00:29:19.35\00:29:22.32 or with the river people. 00:29:22.36\00:29:23.83 There's two different types of people 00:29:23.86\00:29:25.19 that live in the river. 00:29:25.23\00:29:26.56 This picture is a picture of Lucas and Georgia, 00:29:26.59\00:29:28.90 and they are heading out 00:29:28.93\00:29:30.27 and they lived in an indigenous area. 00:29:30.30\00:29:32.30 And this area and that they lived in, 00:29:32.33\00:29:34.04 we have worked for over five years. 00:29:34.07\00:29:36.30 But it is an area where the Indians, 00:29:36.34\00:29:38.17 they live very primitively still. 00:29:38.21\00:29:41.31 They're very cautious 00:29:41.34\00:29:44.28 to have us come into their area. 00:29:44.31\00:29:45.75 They don't know who we are, what we really want to do. 00:29:45.78\00:29:48.22 And so I remember the first time 00:29:48.25\00:29:49.95 we went to their village, they actually asked us 00:29:49.98\00:29:52.45 to leave after a day of medical care. 00:29:52.49\00:29:55.42 They watched us, 00:29:55.46\00:29:56.79 we took care of them with medical care. 00:29:56.83\00:29:58.16 We had a group of physicians and dentists, 00:29:58.19\00:29:59.53 and by the end of the day, 00:29:59.56\00:30:00.90 they said we could leave their village. 00:30:00.93\00:30:02.26 And so we came back again. 00:30:02.30\00:30:03.77 And we came back again. 00:30:03.80\00:30:05.13 And after a long time of working here, 00:30:05.17\00:30:07.60 they said, "Hey, we would have some people live with us." 00:30:07.64\00:30:10.04 So Lucas and Georgia went out and lived with them. 00:30:10.07\00:30:12.67 After living with them, working with them 00:30:12.71\00:30:15.14 going out to their gardens and fishing, 00:30:15.18\00:30:16.91 then they're able to start doing Bible studies. 00:30:16.95\00:30:19.35 And they'll sit with the people, 00:30:19.38\00:30:21.12 and they'll open up the Bible, and they'll study God's word. 00:30:21.15\00:30:24.59 In this actual, 00:30:24.62\00:30:25.95 and you'll see the picture of them 00:30:25.99\00:30:27.32 sitting with the people. 00:30:27.36\00:30:28.69 In this village, Lucas was able to learn the local language. 00:30:28.72\00:30:32.29 It's an indigenous dialect. 00:30:32.33\00:30:34.03 We wrote the very first ever Bible study in their language. 00:30:34.06\00:30:40.20 He studies with them in their language. 00:30:40.24\00:30:42.64 And so I went out and visited this very village 00:30:42.67\00:30:45.87 about a month ago. 00:30:45.91\00:30:47.78 We have a program, so we're taking out groups 00:30:47.81\00:30:50.35 and we open up the villages 00:30:50.38\00:30:51.71 and we put in our Bible workers. 00:30:51.75\00:30:53.18 And then we come out with a floating boat 00:30:53.21\00:30:55.22 that our union has to do public evangelism. 00:30:55.25\00:30:57.65 But I went out to do a visit and say, 00:30:57.69\00:31:00.56 "Is this community 00:31:00.59\00:31:01.92 that has been so resistant to us 00:31:01.96\00:31:03.53 really open to any kind of evangelism? 00:31:03.56\00:31:06.39 You know, can you take that step forward?" 00:31:06.43\00:31:08.06 And I went out, and I met the Indian chief. 00:31:08.10\00:31:10.20 And Lucas, the Bible worker presented me as his chief 00:31:10.23\00:31:13.37 because I'm the director of the program. 00:31:13.40\00:31:14.74 So this was chief to chief having a talk. 00:31:14.77\00:31:16.87 And he brought me into his hut, and we sat and talk. 00:31:16.91\00:31:20.08 And I asked him, you know, how was it going with Lucas 00:31:20.11\00:31:23.31 and how did he feel about us 00:31:23.35\00:31:24.98 being more present in the community? 00:31:25.01\00:31:27.02 And he said to me, he said, 00:31:27.05\00:31:28.78 "I want Lucas's church here in my community." 00:31:28.82\00:31:32.35 We were so excited 00:31:32.39\00:31:33.72 because they've never been open for that. 00:31:33.76\00:31:35.39 So right now, in this very moment, 00:31:35.42\00:31:37.89 we have our floating church in front of the community. 00:31:37.93\00:31:41.16 I spoke to the pastor that lives on the boat yesterday. 00:31:41.20\00:31:44.27 Just yesterday, he said to me, 00:31:44.30\00:31:45.83 we have 50 people 00:31:45.87\00:31:47.84 that are going to be baptized the end of this month. 00:31:47.87\00:31:50.14 So this is brand new. 00:31:50.17\00:31:51.51 This is an area 00:31:51.54\00:31:52.87 that we've never had an Adventist church before. 00:31:52.91\00:31:54.68 So Amazon Lifesavers 00:31:54.71\00:31:56.54 really looks to do a complete service 00:31:56.58\00:31:58.78 with the social work that really just opens up, 00:31:58.81\00:32:01.45 finding out the need, working with the people, 00:32:01.48\00:32:03.52 loving the people and leaving churches as we go. 00:32:03.55\00:32:05.92 So what will this year's project do 00:32:05.95\00:32:09.16 from the offerings that you'll receive? 00:32:09.19\00:32:11.29 This year, we have partnered with ASI, 00:32:11.33\00:32:13.50 and you guys are helping us 00:32:13.53\00:32:14.96 so that we can reach 10 new areas. 00:32:15.00\00:32:17.10 So with the money 00:32:17.13\00:32:18.47 that we're going to be receiving from ASI, 00:32:18.50\00:32:19.83 we will train beginning in January 00:32:19.87\00:32:21.77 10 new groups of Bible workers, 00:32:21.80\00:32:23.94 they come at our base, 00:32:23.97\00:32:25.81 and they do a two-month training course 00:32:25.84\00:32:27.54 where we have all the different areas 00:32:27.58\00:32:29.18 they are trained in 00:32:29.21\00:32:30.55 and then they'll be living out in the jungle for a whole year. 00:32:30.58\00:32:32.78 We hope by the end of 2020 00:32:32.81\00:32:34.58 to have 10 new regions with 10 new churches. 00:32:34.62\00:32:36.79 Amen. 00:32:36.82\00:32:38.15 Well, thank you so much for everything. 00:32:38.19\00:32:39.52 It's happening with Amazon Lifesavers. 00:32:39.55\00:32:41.36 Now I understand that my next interviewee, 00:32:41.39\00:32:44.53 James Hartley who leads LIGHT, 00:32:44.56\00:32:47.56 is a partner of yours in ministry. 00:32:47.60\00:32:49.16 How does that work? 00:32:49.20\00:32:50.53 He is, Debbie. 00:32:50.57\00:32:51.90 LIGHT has actually been a partner with us. 00:32:51.93\00:32:53.27 We have another school in our union as well 00:32:53.30\00:32:55.97 where we train medical mission, 00:32:56.00\00:32:57.97 and LIGHT has been a great partner with us 00:32:58.01\00:33:00.48 both in our training school in the Amazon 00:33:00.51\00:33:02.44 and our training school in Honduras, 00:33:02.48\00:33:03.81 where we train medical missions. 00:33:03.85\00:33:05.18 Thank you for helping me 00:33:05.21\00:33:06.55 introduce James to the audience. 00:33:06.58\00:33:07.92 Thank you. 00:33:07.95\00:33:09.98 So now we'll have James Hartley, 00:33:10.02\00:33:11.75 who is the president of LIGHT 00:33:11.79\00:33:13.36 come out and tell us a little bit more about 00:33:13.39\00:33:15.06 that ministry. 00:33:15.09\00:33:16.42 Of course, you know, we've been here on stage 00:33:16.46\00:33:18.03 so much together. 00:33:18.06\00:33:19.39 That's right, Debbie. 00:33:19.43\00:33:20.76 You should probably me interviewing me. 00:33:20.80\00:33:22.13 Debbie, could you tell the audience 00:33:22.16\00:33:23.50 what LIGHT stands for? 00:33:23.53\00:33:24.87 Well, I'll let you go ahead and do that today. 00:33:24.90\00:33:26.23 I've put you on the spot. 00:33:26.27\00:33:27.60 So LIGHT stands for the Lay Institute 00:33:27.64\00:33:28.97 for Global Health Training. 00:33:29.00\00:33:30.34 Our partners with ASI, something we really appreciate. 00:33:30.37\00:33:32.91 So LIGHT is a nonprofit organization 00:33:32.94\00:33:35.78 that provides quality health evangelism 00:33:35.81\00:33:39.08 training to church members around the world. 00:33:39.11\00:33:42.82 And, you know, we do that through short courses, 00:33:42.85\00:33:45.29 through workshops, through online studies. 00:33:45.32\00:33:47.56 And our goal is really to provide 00:33:47.59\00:33:48.96 health evangelism training to every church member 00:33:48.99\00:33:51.09 in their country and in their language. 00:33:51.13\00:33:53.53 What we want to see what our goal, 00:33:53.56\00:33:54.90 what our vision, I should say is, 00:33:54.93\00:33:56.83 is to see that every Adventist Church 00:33:56.87\00:33:59.43 is a thriving community health center, 00:33:59.47\00:34:01.97 where the church members are sharing the love of Christ 00:34:02.00\00:34:04.84 through ministering to the practical needs 00:34:04.87\00:34:06.51 of the community around them, 00:34:06.54\00:34:07.88 not just warming their church pews, 00:34:07.91\00:34:09.24 but out actively engaged in the community. 00:34:09.28\00:34:10.98 This is what LIGHT is about. 00:34:11.01\00:34:12.45 So we have a 350-page training manual. 00:34:12.48\00:34:16.65 It's a little hefty. 00:34:16.69\00:34:18.02 Okay, it takes 125 hours to go through 00:34:18.05\00:34:20.52 because we want them to be well-equipped. 00:34:20.56\00:34:22.29 And through the program, 00:34:22.32\00:34:23.66 which is normally three or four weeks, 00:34:23.69\00:34:25.59 we get them engaged in the community. 00:34:25.63\00:34:27.10 So our staff are out working with the students 00:34:27.13\00:34:29.93 in the community, conducting health expos, 00:34:29.96\00:34:32.43 doing door to door work, 00:34:32.47\00:34:33.80 doing health seminars, and so forth. 00:34:33.84\00:34:35.30 And so we're teaching them. 00:34:35.34\00:34:36.67 So when we leave, 00:34:36.71\00:34:38.04 and then we also leave them with materials, 00:34:38.07\00:34:39.57 so they can continue on in that type of work. 00:34:39.61\00:34:42.28 So yeah, it was just something 00:34:42.31\00:34:44.35 I feel privileged to be a part of. 00:34:44.38\00:34:45.91 It's amazing. 00:34:45.95\00:34:47.28 I was thinking of my first ASI was 2001. 00:34:47.32\00:34:49.35 I've been Seventh-day Adventist for 20 years, 00:34:49.38\00:34:53.36 and I've been pretty much doing this type of work ever since. 00:34:53.39\00:34:55.59 And, you know, it's just exciting to be a part of it. 00:34:55.62\00:34:58.09 And, you know, we're just trying to help 00:34:58.13\00:34:59.86 strengthen the right arm of the gospel 00:34:59.89\00:35:01.63 and equip church members to be able to use it, 00:35:01.66\00:35:04.53 you know, more effectively. 00:35:04.57\00:35:05.90 So how do ASI funds help support LIGHT efforts? 00:35:05.93\00:35:09.04 So LIGHT has a network of over 50 LIGHT missionaries, 00:35:09.07\00:35:13.07 we call them that are scattered throughout the world 00:35:13.11\00:35:14.94 that work full time throughout the whole year. 00:35:14.98\00:35:17.35 They're traveling, 00:35:17.38\00:35:18.71 they're conducting short courses 00:35:18.75\00:35:20.08 three to four weeks, 00:35:20.12\00:35:21.45 some of them help with six-month schools 00:35:21.48\00:35:23.55 and engaged in a lot of other community health evangelism, 00:35:23.59\00:35:27.12 you know, activities. 00:35:27.16\00:35:28.49 And so it's supporting those 50 plus missionaries. 00:35:28.52\00:35:31.99 Also we're translating our material. 00:35:32.03\00:35:33.66 Our curriculum is in 12 different languages. 00:35:33.70\00:35:37.00 And so we produce materials, 00:35:37.03\00:35:38.50 and we also have the materials that... 00:35:38.53\00:35:39.87 We have the training materials, the health expo materials 00:35:39.90\00:35:42.00 that we use in our courses. 00:35:42.04\00:35:43.47 So since we've been an ASI member since 2008, 00:35:43.51\00:35:47.48 and so since that time is about 11 years now, 00:35:47.51\00:35:49.38 we've trained well over 25,000 church members 00:35:49.41\00:35:52.71 through our curriculum in over 90 countries. 00:35:52.75\00:35:55.48 So that's kind of, you know, it's right around... 00:35:55.52\00:35:58.52 I guess around 2,000 or so per year 00:35:58.55\00:36:00.72 that we're training right now. 00:36:00.76\00:36:02.46 We're not trying to get numbers, 00:36:02.49\00:36:03.89 but we want to have accountability, 00:36:03.93\00:36:05.33 it's what we do. 00:36:05.36\00:36:06.70 So all of our missionaries provide activity reports 00:36:06.73\00:36:08.56 to the regional LIGHT directors 00:36:08.60\00:36:09.93 would send that to our main office. 00:36:09.96\00:36:11.63 And so I get to read those, and all these testimonies 00:36:11.67\00:36:14.00 and all these stories. 00:36:14.04\00:36:15.37 So I've got two that I wanted to share, you know, 00:36:15.40\00:36:18.21 'cause one of our projects is providing LIGHT courses 00:36:18.24\00:36:22.74 to every conference and union in the country of India. 00:36:22.78\00:36:25.85 And so I have a story of a lady. 00:36:25.88\00:36:27.78 We just conducted our course this spring in India. 00:36:27.82\00:36:30.75 And one of our missionaries, her name's Jane. 00:36:30.79\00:36:33.05 She didn't speak the local dialect. 00:36:33.09\00:36:35.46 So we had a health expo, lots of people attending, 00:36:35.49\00:36:39.33 so she was at the massage booth 00:36:39.36\00:36:40.70 'cause she couldn't communicate in the language. 00:36:40.73\00:36:43.03 And for an hour, 00:36:43.06\00:36:44.40 she was massaging all these different women. 00:36:44.43\00:36:46.00 One woman came and she looked very, 00:36:46.03\00:36:48.30 you know, wore out and discouraged and down, 00:36:48.34\00:36:51.24 and so she dialogue with the woman. 00:36:51.27\00:36:53.24 The woman said she had pain from her shoulder to her feet, 00:36:53.27\00:36:55.98 she hadn't slept in nights. 00:36:56.01\00:36:57.58 She was just in a terrible condition. 00:36:57.61\00:37:00.65 And so, you know, 00:37:00.68\00:37:02.15 our missionary is giving advice about what to do and so forth. 00:37:02.18\00:37:04.69 But it was just... 00:37:04.72\00:37:06.22 The lady was just discouraged. You know, it wasn't... 00:37:06.25\00:37:08.29 It wasn't resonating with her. So she said... 00:37:08.32\00:37:10.03 You know, she felt impressed to offer a full body massage. 00:37:10.06\00:37:13.13 So she's like, you know what, I want to try to help you. 00:37:13.16\00:37:14.63 So they found a room, 00:37:14.66\00:37:16.00 she went into a back room and gave, 00:37:16.03\00:37:19.10 spent 45 minutes giving this woman 00:37:19.13\00:37:21.54 from head to toe this massage 00:37:21.57\00:37:23.37 and she could sense the woman's breathing 00:37:23.41\00:37:25.17 was becoming more relaxed. 00:37:25.21\00:37:26.68 Finally, the woman fell asleep, 00:37:26.71\00:37:28.04 but she hadn't done in a long time. 00:37:28.08\00:37:29.54 And she was just there snoring away on the bed. 00:37:29.58\00:37:32.41 And so our missionary is like, I'm not going to disturb her. 00:37:32.45\00:37:34.78 I mean, this woman needs rest, right? 00:37:34.82\00:37:37.05 You know, she lives a hard life. 00:37:37.09\00:37:38.42 Many of them sleep on dirt floors, 00:37:38.45\00:37:39.79 they might just have a mattress, 00:37:39.82\00:37:41.16 but they might have to surrender to their kids. 00:37:41.19\00:37:43.09 You know, it's a hard life. So she's just let her sleep. 00:37:43.12\00:37:45.66 She goes outside, tells her husband. 00:37:45.69\00:37:47.36 You know, can we just let her rest, 00:37:47.40\00:37:48.73 so she sleeps there for quite a while. 00:37:48.76\00:37:50.20 Finally, she comes out and her face is relaxed. 00:37:50.23\00:37:52.90 She's smiling. 00:37:52.93\00:37:54.27 She's really, you know, relaxed and she was so happy 00:37:54.30\00:37:56.57 trying to communicate to her appreciation. 00:37:56.60\00:37:58.57 And so anyway, the next day at LIGHT course, 00:37:58.61\00:38:00.91 this lady shows up in the class. 00:38:00.94\00:38:03.35 So this is a picture actually of the lady 00:38:03.38\00:38:05.21 with this pink shawl circled there. 00:38:05.25\00:38:07.48 So she just shows up to our LIGHT course, 00:38:07.52\00:38:09.32 and she brings with her four other women. 00:38:09.35\00:38:11.02 And this is in fact a massage class. 00:38:11.05\00:38:13.46 And so she gave a testimony 00:38:13.49\00:38:14.96 and all the ladies with her asking all kinds of questions 00:38:14.99\00:38:17.99 this woman from the community. 00:38:18.03\00:38:19.59 And then the next day she came with five more women. 00:38:19.63\00:38:22.40 And so it was like, this group was growing. 00:38:22.43\00:38:24.40 And these women are asking all kinds of questions 00:38:24.43\00:38:26.23 where our missionaries were visiting their homes, 00:38:26.27\00:38:28.20 giving them advice. 00:38:28.24\00:38:29.57 And so this, you know, 00:38:29.60\00:38:31.24 experience along with others lead this woman 00:38:31.27\00:38:34.41 to convert to Christianity 00:38:34.44\00:38:36.28 and give her heart to the Jesus Christ, 00:38:36.31\00:38:37.71 so it was just really exciting to see that sort of thing. 00:38:37.75\00:38:40.08 Now another story. 00:38:40.12\00:38:41.68 We just finished a course in Romania this summer, 00:38:41.72\00:38:43.75 just in June. 00:38:43.79\00:38:45.12 And there's this Moldovan lady, her name is Larissa. 00:38:45.15\00:38:48.72 She was living in Romania. 00:38:48.76\00:38:50.99 And it's really a tragic story. 00:38:51.03\00:38:53.06 She was given... 00:38:53.09\00:38:54.53 She was diagnosed with cancer a year and a half ago. 00:38:54.56\00:38:57.47 She has two little children. 00:38:57.50\00:38:59.10 And she's not a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:38:59.13\00:39:03.57 So in April, end of April, 00:39:03.61\00:39:06.37 she had to get a surgery due to some complications 00:39:06.41\00:39:09.04 with her medical condition. 00:39:09.08\00:39:10.55 And they realized that 00:39:10.58\00:39:11.91 this cancer had metastasized severely. 00:39:11.95\00:39:14.15 After the surgery, she was on a respirator, 00:39:14.18\00:39:17.35 she was riddled with cancer. 00:39:17.39\00:39:18.72 The doctors basically gave her up for dead. 00:39:18.75\00:39:20.72 And I've heard of telling someone, 00:39:20.76\00:39:22.62 you know, you've got three months to live. 00:39:22.66\00:39:24.49 They told her she has three days to live. 00:39:24.53\00:39:26.66 They said... 00:39:26.70\00:39:28.03 But in this condition, 00:39:28.06\00:39:29.40 she's going to die in three days. 00:39:29.43\00:39:30.77 So her family's crying and they're supporting her, 00:39:30.80\00:39:32.13 and she even tried to kill herself in that time. 00:39:32.17\00:39:36.10 And her family ended up, you know, 00:39:36.14\00:39:37.91 charming her with love 00:39:37.94\00:39:39.27 and begging the doctors to let her go home to die 00:39:39.31\00:39:41.98 and say goodbye to her family and so forth. 00:39:42.01\00:39:43.71 They let her go. 00:39:43.75\00:39:45.11 So then one family member, like 00:39:45.15\00:39:46.82 pulls her, hears about our training 00:39:46.85\00:39:48.52 and this little, like, 00:39:48.55\00:39:50.19 home like lifestyle program that they heard about, 00:39:50.22\00:39:53.29 which were a ministry that we are partnering with. 00:39:53.32\00:39:55.26 So they bring her there, okay, 00:39:55.29\00:39:57.59 which is unusual, as a terminally ill person. 00:39:57.63\00:40:01.00 But our students surround her, they hear her case 00:40:01.03\00:40:03.13 and they just surround her with prayer. 00:40:03.16\00:40:04.50 They're on their knees praying for her 00:40:04.53\00:40:06.00 doing everything that they can, you know, 00:40:06.03\00:40:08.64 they just did simple things, you know. 00:40:08.67\00:40:12.14 But she started sitting in our classes 00:40:12.17\00:40:14.08 and started to be impacted by this. 00:40:14.11\00:40:15.91 And she started living one day, two days, three days, 00:40:15.94\00:40:18.28 one week, two weeks. 00:40:18.31\00:40:19.85 When she got there, she could hardly walk. 00:40:19.88\00:40:21.98 Now she finished the whole program 00:40:22.02\00:40:23.65 and was walking a kilometer, 00:40:23.69\00:40:25.32 her health just keeps getting better and better. 00:40:25.35\00:40:27.49 And you know what, 00:40:27.52\00:40:28.86 she started getting Bible studies, 00:40:28.89\00:40:30.23 she is gonna be... 00:40:30.26\00:40:31.59 She's scheduled to be baptized next Sabbath on August 10. 00:40:31.63\00:40:34.86 And it's just an amazing story. 00:40:34.90\00:40:36.23 So she was given three days to live 00:40:36.26\00:40:38.70 and she's been living three months. 00:40:38.73\00:40:41.20 We don't know the result of it, 00:40:41.24\00:40:42.60 and we're not trying to say it was, you know, 00:40:42.64\00:40:44.37 the food or whatever that healed everything. 00:40:44.41\00:40:45.94 God healed her. 00:40:45.97\00:40:47.31 But, you know, I just feel like, you know, 00:40:47.34\00:40:48.74 those kind of circumstances when someone gets... 00:40:48.78\00:40:50.65 She has a new motivation for life, you know, 00:40:50.68\00:40:53.08 and she just really surrendered her heart to God, 00:40:53.11\00:40:54.82 and it's just... 00:40:54.85\00:40:56.18 You know, it's amazing the body that God gave to us 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.19 and the healing power that He has, 00:40:58.22\00:40:59.59 so we hope she lives long and is able to be a missionary. 00:40:59.62\00:41:02.39 That's what she wants to do. Yes. 00:41:02.42\00:41:03.76 But we don't know. 00:41:03.79\00:41:05.13 But her heart is getting ready for the Lord's 00:41:05.16\00:41:06.49 for the Second Coming regardless, so... 00:41:06.53\00:41:08.26 Isn't this amazing 00:41:08.30\00:41:09.66 what can happen when God blesses our efforts? 00:41:09.70\00:41:13.10 Thank you so much with what's happening through LIGHT. 00:41:13.13\00:41:16.00 And we pray that God will continue the blessings. 00:41:16.04\00:41:18.31 God is good. Thank you, Debbie. 00:41:18.34\00:41:21.81 So now coming our last story today is from NAPS. 00:41:21.84\00:41:27.12 And they have their whole contingent with them. 00:41:27.15\00:41:31.45 So with us is... 00:41:31.49\00:41:33.05 This is Letitia Bullard, 00:41:33.09\00:41:37.29 who is the NAPS impact mission food director. 00:41:37.33\00:41:40.36 And then Bethie Melidor, who's the principal of NALA 00:41:40.40\00:41:44.53 and we'll explain that later. 00:41:44.57\00:41:46.10 So first I wanna start with Letitia. 00:41:46.13\00:41:49.17 Tell us what NAPS is? 00:41:49.20\00:41:51.21 What was the original purpose and where are we now? 00:41:51.24\00:41:55.11 Okay, so NAPS stands for the National Association 00:41:55.14\00:41:58.75 for the Prevention of Starvation. 00:41:58.78\00:42:00.75 And it was originally started by a college student 00:42:00.78\00:42:03.89 who would pass by some homeless people 00:42:03.92\00:42:06.35 who were under bridge every day after school. 00:42:06.39\00:42:09.19 And then he finally decided, you know what, 00:42:09.22\00:42:11.49 I have to do something about this. 00:42:11.53\00:42:13.26 So he gathered some friends. 00:42:13.29\00:42:15.46 They decided to wake up early before classes 00:42:15.50\00:42:17.90 and they start providing these people with food. 00:42:17.93\00:42:20.30 This was over 40 years ago, 00:42:20.34\00:42:22.37 and now NAPS has expanded so much 00:42:22.40\00:42:24.97 to where we do medical relief, disaster relief, 00:42:25.01\00:42:28.78 feeding programs, youth programs. 00:42:28.81\00:42:30.98 We have over 13 branches around the world, 00:42:31.01\00:42:33.55 three in the States. 00:42:33.58\00:42:34.92 We have a wellness center in Alabama, 00:42:34.95\00:42:37.52 as well as the NAPS Abundant Life Academy. 00:42:37.55\00:42:40.19 Okay, so you said the NAPS Abundant Life Academy? 00:42:40.22\00:42:44.26 Yes, ma'am. That's NALA. 00:42:44.29\00:42:45.96 Que you. 00:42:45.99\00:42:47.33 All right, so then, Bethie, tell us about NALA? 00:42:47.36\00:42:50.77 Where's Joy. 00:42:50.80\00:42:52.27 NALA to me is an amazing opportunity for me. 00:42:52.30\00:42:56.87 As you said NALA stands for NAPS Abundant Life Academy. 00:42:56.91\00:43:00.41 Letitia talked about those college students 00:43:00.44\00:43:02.48 doing work going out and serving their community 00:43:02.51\00:43:04.75 starting with food and expanding. 00:43:04.78\00:43:07.08 One of those students and one of those missions 00:43:07.12\00:43:09.25 decided to go serve in an area that is amongst the poor 00:43:09.28\00:43:13.19 that has one of the most poorest counties 00:43:13.22\00:43:15.22 it is hill county, green county, 00:43:15.26\00:43:16.86 Some of the counties, 00:43:16.89\00:43:18.23 they're on the top five of the poorest counties 00:43:18.26\00:43:20.73 in the entire United States. 00:43:20.76\00:43:22.90 And because of what she experienced 00:43:22.93\00:43:24.63 there at the time and the educational relief 00:43:24.67\00:43:26.97 that she saw that was needed 00:43:27.00\00:43:28.34 because of the struggling educational system 00:43:28.37\00:43:30.61 in that area. 00:43:30.64\00:43:31.97 She decided we should start a school 00:43:32.01\00:43:34.78 and as a college students she moved on that vision 00:43:34.81\00:43:38.65 and NAPS was able to start NALA now 00:43:38.68\00:43:40.82 in K-8th school that is serving in that area. 00:43:40.85\00:43:44.69 And NALA is not a typical school. 00:43:44.72\00:43:47.36 NALA students have received a gift of service from NAPS 00:43:47.39\00:43:52.19 and all the missions and a history 00:43:52.23\00:43:54.20 and now they are serving and reaching out 00:43:54.23\00:43:57.23 and doing missions on their own. 00:43:57.27\00:43:58.83 So these are elementary age school children. 00:43:58.87\00:44:01.94 Yes. K-8th. Okay. All right. 00:44:01.97\00:44:03.30 So let's talk a little bit about the food program. 00:44:03.34\00:44:06.74 Letitia. 00:44:06.78\00:44:08.11 Okay, so NAPS Abundant Life Academy 00:44:08.14\00:44:11.31 is able to do a food program every month, food bank. 00:44:11.35\00:44:15.52 And it so happened that in the beginning of the year, 00:44:15.55\00:44:18.22 the director of the program had to unexpectedly leave. 00:44:18.25\00:44:21.52 So now everyone's questioning like 00:44:21.56\00:44:24.66 who's gonna run this food bank, 00:44:24.69\00:44:26.63 you know, it's servicing over 200 families, 00:44:26.66\00:44:29.63 over 500 individuals who's gonna take that up? 00:44:29.66\00:44:32.60 And the kids from NAPS Academy, 00:44:32.63\00:44:34.94 they volunteer, they say, "We are gonna do this." 00:44:34.97\00:44:37.37 So they divide themselves up into groups 00:44:37.41\00:44:41.64 become leaders decided to take on the calling 00:44:41.68\00:44:44.01 for the food bank, 00:44:44.05\00:44:45.71 the packing, the unpacking, everything. 00:44:45.75\00:44:48.58 And it's such a blessing. 00:44:48.62\00:44:50.42 And we actually have a short video 00:44:50.45\00:44:52.49 of one of the students 00:44:52.52\00:44:54.06 who was in charge of it one time. 00:44:54.09\00:44:56.06 Her name is Diane 00:44:56.09\00:44:57.53 and we'll hear a little bit more 00:44:57.56\00:44:58.89 about what she has to say about it. 00:44:58.93\00:45:00.26 Okay. 00:45:00.30\00:45:01.63 My name is Diane, and I go to the school NALA. 00:45:01.66\00:45:05.27 And today we're operating a food bank, 00:45:05.30\00:45:08.54 for the community. 00:45:08.57\00:45:10.17 And it just makes me feel good just 00:45:10.21\00:45:12.81 to serve the people for those who don't have, 00:45:12.84\00:45:16.24 for those who probably have, 00:45:16.28\00:45:17.68 but it's still a blessing to share with them food 00:45:17.71\00:45:21.12 and to do the work for that. 00:45:21.15\00:45:23.85 Well, she's quite an articulate little young lady. 00:45:23.89\00:45:26.92 She knows exactly what to do. 00:45:26.96\00:45:28.66 So what kind of impact is that having on the community? 00:45:28.69\00:45:32.43 Well, what's so great about doing the food bank 00:45:32.46\00:45:35.23 is that it not only caters to 00:45:35.26\00:45:36.77 the physical needs of the community there, 00:45:36.80\00:45:39.03 but also what we're able to do 00:45:39.07\00:45:41.17 is that we can invite all the families 00:45:41.20\00:45:43.81 that come through, 00:45:43.84\00:45:45.17 they are invited to the exercise classes 00:45:45.21\00:45:47.58 at the wellness center, that's not too far away 00:45:47.61\00:45:49.94 or they're invited to the Bible study. 00:45:49.98\00:45:51.88 And the last time I was there just a week ago, 00:45:51.91\00:45:54.38 so the Bible study was packed 00:45:54.42\00:45:56.32 and these are all people who aren't Adventists 00:45:56.35\00:45:58.62 or don't know much about it who we are, 00:45:58.65\00:46:00.26 but they're so receptive to what we have to say 00:46:00.29\00:46:03.12 because we have met their physical needs. 00:46:03.16\00:46:05.29 So just a blessing around all around. 00:46:05.33\00:46:08.73 So has this had an impact on the students 00:46:08.76\00:46:11.23 that are participating in this way? 00:46:11.27\00:46:14.74 As a teacher, I'll put it this way, 00:46:14.77\00:46:16.44 I have not seen any amount of lesson planning 00:46:16.47\00:46:19.34 or even in class study, 00:46:19.37\00:46:20.84 do what one day of service have done for these kids. 00:46:20.88\00:46:23.95 Amen. 00:46:23.98\00:46:25.31 I call it, my not so secret weapon for academies. 00:46:25.35\00:46:28.28 We talk about the children and the struggles with them, 00:46:28.32\00:46:30.89 engage them in service. 00:46:30.92\00:46:32.82 These children, their hearts have been transformed. 00:46:32.85\00:46:36.56 Their character has been built, 00:46:36.59\00:46:38.59 and most importantly, spiritually, 00:46:38.63\00:46:40.40 it's like they walk in the walk of Jesus 00:46:40.43\00:46:42.26 and they identify with the Bible in a way 00:46:42.30\00:46:44.50 that I haven't seen the children 00:46:44.53\00:46:46.33 do other places before. 00:46:46.37\00:46:48.07 So it's been an amazing journey 00:46:48.10\00:46:50.17 and just recently in our baptism 00:46:50.21\00:46:52.37 in May eight of those students stood up to be baptized. 00:46:52.41\00:46:56.58 Amen. 00:46:56.61\00:46:57.95 And so just to show a taste of what they get, 00:46:57.98\00:46:59.75 and we didn't have to do must be on showing them 00:46:59.78\00:47:02.72 and they get to walk the walk themselves. 00:47:02.75\00:47:04.95 Okay, now there's a picture of a young man. 00:47:04.99\00:47:07.76 Oh, and there he is. 00:47:07.79\00:47:09.12 Tell us a little bit about his story? 00:47:09.16\00:47:10.93 He's one of our original students in NALA. 00:47:10.96\00:47:13.43 We call him DJ. 00:47:13.46\00:47:14.90 And it was amazing because 00:47:14.93\00:47:16.56 in that area as well spiritually, 00:47:16.60\00:47:19.17 you need to get the mental picture 00:47:19.20\00:47:21.00 that church for this community is more like a heritage, 00:47:21.04\00:47:25.17 is this is where I was born family history traditionally. 00:47:25.21\00:47:28.24 So it's not some situation 00:47:28.28\00:47:30.45 where you see people are willingly 00:47:30.48\00:47:32.21 just trying to open to learn about other faiths, 00:47:32.25\00:47:34.08 it's culturally lead that way. 00:47:34.12\00:47:36.12 So for him being from that background, 00:47:36.15\00:47:39.32 he'd been in our school for about four years, 00:47:39.35\00:47:42.26 and he wanted to transform. 00:47:42.29\00:47:43.79 He learned a lot. 00:47:43.83\00:47:45.16 He told his mother 00:47:45.19\00:47:46.53 that he wanted to be able to be baptized, 00:47:46.56\00:47:49.40 but she said, "You know, you've been at our church, 00:47:49.43\00:47:51.53 you've been baptized for?" 00:47:51.57\00:47:52.90 He said, "No, Mom, what I'm learning, 00:47:52.93\00:47:54.64 the way I'm growing. 00:47:54.67\00:47:56.00 I want to be baptized here." 00:47:56.04\00:47:57.87 And after six students had already been baptized, 00:47:57.91\00:48:00.48 he was struggling with that 00:48:00.51\00:48:01.84 he was on the phone with his mom, 00:48:01.88\00:48:03.75 at that time did not want the baptism to pass 00:48:03.78\00:48:06.95 and he stood until she surrendered to him 00:48:06.98\00:48:09.58 and allowed him and his sister to be baptized. 00:48:09.62\00:48:12.75 And this is him taken the core. 00:48:12.79\00:48:14.12 This is not us standing for him pushing his parents for him. 00:48:14.16\00:48:17.23 These are the kids themselves on the move, 00:48:17.26\00:48:19.96 ready to give their life to Christ and to serve. 00:48:20.00\00:48:23.10 And we're talking 7 to 13 year olds. 00:48:23.13\00:48:25.83 Yes. 00:48:25.87\00:48:27.20 So the impact that we can have on children is tremendous 00:48:27.24\00:48:30.51 if we just give them the opportunity to serve Jesus. 00:48:30.54\00:48:32.87 Amen. That's wonderful. 00:48:32.91\00:48:34.24 And so the funds that we will provide for NAPS 00:48:34.28\00:48:37.55 will help to increase the capacity 00:48:37.58\00:48:40.15 for their food donor program 00:48:40.18\00:48:41.62 and obviously impact many more lives. 00:48:41.65\00:48:43.59 Thank you. 00:48:43.62\00:48:44.95 We are so grateful for all supporters. 00:48:44.99\00:48:46.69 Thank you very much. 00:48:46.72\00:48:48.06
