Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:19.58 This first hymn that we're going to do is: Look for the Waymarks 00:00:19.61\00:00:22.22 written by F.E. Belden 00:00:22.25\00:00:24.05 one of the compilers of hymns and tunes 00:00:24.09\00:00:25.89 he was a nephew of Ellen White, very talented, 00:00:25.92\00:00:29.42 his daughter tells us that on occasion 00:00:29.46\00:00:32.26 her father would sit in a meeting... 00:00:32.29\00:00:35.06 a church service or evangelistic meeting 00:00:35.10\00:00:37.37 when the preacher would get up and announce his text, 00:00:37.40\00:00:40.00 Belden would leave or scoot over to a quiet corner 00:00:40.04\00:00:42.70 and he would write words and music of a new hymn 00:00:42.77\00:00:45.41 and by the time the sermon was over, 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.31 Belden would stand up with his wife who was also a musician 00:00:47.34\00:00:50.41 and the two would sing a duet... 00:00:50.45\00:00:51.95 brand-new hymn based on the sermon or the text 00:00:51.98\00:00:54.92 they'd just heard a sermon about. 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.09 Now, that's amazing to me because I couldn't do... 00:00:57.12\00:00:59.52 I could be here and I'd never write anything... 00:00:59.55\00:01:01.96 because that's just not my talent, 00:01:01.99\00:01:03.89 but remember they did have more than 15-minute homilies 00:01:03.93\00:01:06.96 that we preach today... 00:01:07.00\00:01:08.50 they did have probably an hour 00:01:08.53\00:01:09.86 or an hour and a half to do that. 00:01:09.90\00:01:11.23 Unfortunately, Belden left the church around about 1907 00:01:11.27\00:01:16.10 and... so this very talented man ended up not... 00:01:16.14\00:01:19.74 in his last years... not being a member of the church 00:01:19.77\00:01:22.68 though he contributed much early on. 00:01:22.71\00:01:24.68 So, we're going to do, "Look for the Waymarks" 00:01:24.71\00:01:26.78 it's a hymn that talks about the great prophetic empires 00:01:26.82\00:01:31.25 and one that would resonate with the pioneers then 00:01:31.29\00:01:33.99 and should still resonate with us today. 00:01:34.02\00:01:36.22 Song. 00:01:36.26\00:03:44.45 Another hymn that entered our hymnody in 1886 was: 00:03:44.49\00:03:48.02 Gleams of the Golden Morning 00:03:48.06\00:03:49.39 which is one we used to sing a lot more... 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.96 they were still singing it a lot when I was a kid growing up 00:03:50.99\00:03:53.93 but I don't hear it much anymore, 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.36 but it was very popular for many, many years, 00:03:55.40\00:03:57.30 there's a story that's come down to us from southern Mexico 00:03:57.33\00:04:00.27 some time around 1940 where some of our believers 00:04:00.30\00:04:03.97 in southern Mexico decided to go out 00:04:04.01\00:04:05.41 and try to witness through singing evangelism. 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.58 So, they went into the village and sang some songs 00:04:08.61\00:04:11.41 but people didn't respond and they got discouraged 00:04:11.45\00:04:14.15 went home and kind of felt bad 00:04:14.22\00:04:15.75 but after a few days they thought, 00:04:15.78\00:04:17.19 "Well, we should try this again" 00:04:17.22\00:04:18.55 so, they again went into the market place 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.19 and our believers began to sing 00:04:21.22\00:04:23.19 and when they got through singing, 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.16 "Gleams of the Golden Morning" 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.00 someone in the group there... standing... listening said, 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.56 "Where have you been... 3 to 5 in the morning 00:04:29.60\00:04:33.80 the last few mornings? 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.17 And they said, "Why do you ask?" 00:04:35.20\00:04:36.60 "Well, because we've been hearing this song every morning 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.97 for the last several nights, 3 to 5 in the morning, 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.24 where is your group meeting?" 00:04:41.28\00:04:42.71 And the Adventists looked at each other and said, 00:04:42.74\00:04:45.28 "Well, we haven't been meeting from 3 to 5 in the morning, 00:04:45.31\00:04:48.98 we don't know what you're talking about. " 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.35 And so, both sides were kind of surprised about this, 00:04:50.39\00:04:54.09 and finally the Adventists said, "It must have been the angels 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.93 telling you that you need to get ready to meet Jesus. " 00:04:56.96\00:05:01.33 And the story that's come down is, 00:05:01.36\00:05:03.40 that the response this time was much warmer 00:05:03.43\00:05:06.07 than it had been the first time 00:05:06.10\00:05:07.54 when our believers went out to do some singing evangelism, 00:05:07.60\00:05:10.74 so, "Gleams of the Golden Morning. " 00:05:10.77\00:05:12.94 Piano... 00:05:12.97\00:05:51.08 Song. 00:05:51.11\00:06:29.18 Our next hymn also entered Adventist hymnody in 1886, 00:06:29.22\00:06:32.69 "Lift up the Trumpet" 00:06:32.72\00:06:34.86 written by a female by the way, 00:06:34.92\00:06:37.53 an Advent Christian female Minister... Jessie Strout. 00:06:37.59\00:06:42.13 This hymn is one that as I was growing up in the church 00:06:42.16\00:06:46.13 was widely sung. 00:06:46.17\00:06:47.64 I can remember as a kid, maybe some of you 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.87 that are my age or even older will remember 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.14 when we used to sing this at big meetings 00:06:52.17\00:06:54.41 and the King's Heralds would come out 00:06:54.44\00:06:56.64 and once in a while, if they really wanted to get dramatic, 00:06:56.68\00:06:58.81 they'd even have trumpets 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.52 and Brad and Olive Braley would be there at the organ 00:07:00.55\00:07:03.12 and the piano and they would start to sing 00:07:03.18\00:07:05.55 "Lift up the Trumpet loud let it ring: 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.96 Jesus is coming again!" 00:07:07.99\00:07:09.32 I hoped that... the chill went up and down my spine 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.89 every time that happened. 00:07:11.93\00:07:13.53 So, we're going to do a couple of stanzas of this old hymn, 00:07:13.56\00:07:17.03 Lift up the trumpet and loud let it ring. 00:07:17.07\00:07:20.14 Song 00:07:20.17\00:07:53.30 Let's stop right there, 00:07:53.34\00:07:54.67 I should have had you all stand up... 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.04 this is another one of those hymns 00:07:56.07\00:07:57.41 I don't know how an Adventist can sing this sitting down 00:07:57.44\00:08:00.28 so let's just kind of roll the tape back 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.54 and we're going to start with the first stanza again 00:08:02.58\00:08:04.61 and sing it standing up 00:08:04.65\00:08:05.98 and it's all right to smile, you know, 00:08:06.01\00:08:07.38 I say, if you're doing that it's all right to smile 00:08:07.42\00:08:10.55 when you're thinking about Jesus coming back 00:08:10.59\00:08:12.32 so, never mind if it shows on your face also, all right, 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.16 so, Lift up the Trumpet. 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.52 Song 00:08:16.56\00:09:15.62 You may be seated, thank you. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.35 Good morning, ASI, 00:09:17.39\00:09:20.76 how are you this morning? 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.02 Good, we are small in number but mighty in power 00:09:23.06\00:09:27.50 because God... His Holy Spirit is with us 00:09:27.53\00:09:30.43 and all His angels 00:09:30.47\00:09:31.80 and so we're really glad to be able bring to you 00:09:31.83\00:09:33.54 another "Offering in Action" Segment this morning. 00:09:33.57\00:09:37.31 With me is Garrett Caldwell, 00:09:37.34\00:09:40.01 he is the External Relations Officer 00:09:40.04\00:09:42.71 for the Loma Linda University 00:09:42.74\00:09:44.25 Biological and Earth Sciences Department 00:09:44.28\00:09:47.28 and woo... what a mouthful 00:09:47.32\00:09:49.25 but he's got quite a lot of information to share 00:09:49.28\00:09:52.19 with us this morning. 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.59 Can you share with us a little bit first about the... 00:09:53.62\00:09:57.19 some of the new developments that are happening there 00:09:57.23\00:10:00.76 just to kind of bring people up to speed. 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.00 This is a Department that is conducting research... 00:10:03.03\00:10:06.84 scientific research, geological exploration 00:10:06.87\00:10:10.77 that will often validate the Biblical worldview 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.64 that we... that we know 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.01 and so, this is a very important part 00:10:16.04\00:10:19.81 of Loma Linda University's efforts 00:10:19.85\00:10:23.62 so that, it will have a great impact actually around the world 00:10:23.65\00:10:27.76 so tell us a little bit about the new developments 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.69 that are happening. 00:10:29.72\00:10:31.06 Absolutely, I'm very happy to be here 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43 representing Dr. Leonard Brand and the rest of the team 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.46 and the Department of Earth and Biological Sciences 00:10:34.50\00:10:37.00 Dr. Brian wishes that he could be here, 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.03 he wasn't able to be so, I'm here representing him 00:10:39.07\00:10:41.20 and just understand that they deal with a level of science 00:10:41.24\00:10:45.04 that is a bit beyond what I deal with on a normal basis 00:10:45.07\00:10:48.74 but I'm very happy to share a report of the impact of this 00:10:48.78\00:10:52.41 and one thing that makes sense out of it to me is that 00:10:52.45\00:10:56.08 I've had the experience and maybe you have 00:10:56.15\00:10:58.62 or some of our audience has as well 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.32 of going to the grocery store... 00:11:00.36\00:11:01.92 looking for an item and not seeing it 00:11:01.99\00:11:04.16 because the wrapping is just a little different 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.23 than what you expect. 00:11:06.26\00:11:07.60 When you have a Biblical framework 00:11:07.63\00:11:10.37 and a Biblical worldview 00:11:10.40\00:11:11.80 and you're doing scientific research, 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.64 the evidence that you see in Science 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.44 if... if you recognize it based on your understanding 00:11:17.47\00:11:21.74 of the account of Creation, 00:11:21.81\00:11:23.85 some of the accounts in the Bible about the flood 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.98 and other things, 00:11:27.02\00:11:28.35 you can see evidence that other people cannot see 00:11:28.38\00:11:31.15 and so the research that Dr. Brand and others are doing 00:11:31.19\00:11:35.19 looking into geologic formations in various places, 00:11:35.22\00:11:38.99 mostly in the western US 00:11:39.03\00:11:40.90 although they have done research in other places around the world 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.43 is again, bringing scientific evidence 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.17 affirming the account of Creation. 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.84 Excellent, thank you, 00:11:48.90\00:11:50.24 tell us about some of the impact of this work 00:11:50.27\00:11:54.54 that it has had... 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.14 maybe on individuals that are involved in the process. 00:11:56.21\00:11:59.45 It was very interesting to ask Dr. Brand about this 00:11:59.48\00:12:02.72 and he talked about the Graduate students 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.65 that, again, come from a very entrenched scientific background 00:12:04.69\00:12:10.03 but to be able to do this study 00:12:10.06\00:12:11.53 and to engage their Biblical worldview, 00:12:11.59\00:12:14.33 they find that Biblical Worldview is an asset... 00:12:14.36\00:12:17.73 again it allows them to see things that others don't see 00:12:17.77\00:12:21.34 and that's been affirming to them 00:12:21.37\00:12:23.87 so, that... that's one very important thing 00:12:23.91\00:12:27.84 that's coming out of it. 00:12:27.88\00:12:29.21 I'm curious what the impact might be 00:12:29.24\00:12:31.58 on the scientific community 00:12:31.61\00:12:33.21 because they're not necessarily sharing the Biblical worldview, 00:12:33.25\00:12:37.12 so, how do they receive 00:12:37.15\00:12:38.49 this kind of research and information? 00:12:38.52\00:12:40.69 Well, in general, the scientific community 00:12:40.72\00:12:42.92 Dr. Brand tells me, 00:12:42.96\00:12:44.99 will view those with a Creationist understanding 00:12:45.03\00:12:49.56 with skepticism, cynicism and maybe even derision 00:12:49.60\00:12:54.04 but this group is committed to careful scientific work 00:12:54.07\00:12:58.21 and what they have discovered is when you do careful science, 00:12:58.24\00:13:03.71 it leads to an atmosphere of respect 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.41 and that atmosphere of respect can often lead to questions 00:13:06.45\00:13:11.12 even, Dr. Brand tells me from Atheist geologists, 00:13:11.15\00:13:15.16 they'll start by asking questions about the science 00:13:15.22\00:13:19.19 but it will lead to questions about faith 00:13:19.23\00:13:22.46 and that's been a tremendous blessing to him 00:13:22.50\00:13:25.03 and to those that he has dialogued with. 00:13:25.07\00:13:27.34 Excellent, share with us... 00:13:27.37\00:13:29.94 you were telling me about the experience 00:13:29.97\00:13:32.07 that Dr. Brand shared with you 00:13:32.11\00:13:34.24 about someone who was reading a book that he had published. 00:13:34.28\00:13:37.68 Right, the book is: Faith, Reason and Earth History 00:13:37.71\00:13:41.88 and he's received letters from many people 00:13:41.92\00:13:44.69 saying that it's encouraged 00:13:44.72\00:13:46.05 not only their understanding of science but their faith 00:13:46.09\00:13:49.72 and he just recently received a letter from a man in prison 00:13:49.76\00:13:52.93 who's in prison, reading the book 00:13:52.96\00:13:55.40 and is finding great encouragement in this book 00:13:55.46\00:13:58.43 so, that really lifted his spirits. 00:13:58.47\00:14:00.27 Wow! so even through the... the... the... the... 00:14:00.34\00:14:03.51 the line of science, people are finding Jesus in that. 00:14:03.54\00:14:07.18 Absolutely. 00:14:07.21\00:14:08.54 Excellent... 00:14:08.58\00:14:09.91 tell us a little bit about the project that's going to be 00:14:09.94\00:14:11.81 funded from this year's offering. 00:14:11.85\00:14:13.18 Absolutely, so, the project is specifically going to study 00:14:13.21\00:14:16.82 the Jurassic Navojo Sandstone that's found all throughout Utah 00:14:16.85\00:14:21.89 again, the framework... the accepted understanding 00:14:21.92\00:14:25.26 is that this all took place in a desert environment. 00:14:25.29\00:14:28.60 They aren't going in with a presupposition 00:14:28.63\00:14:31.87 about what they will find, 00:14:31.90\00:14:33.23 but they're going in with the understanding 00:14:33.27\00:14:35.97 that comes from a Biblical account 00:14:36.00\00:14:38.21 and a Biblical worldview 00:14:38.24\00:14:39.57 and they're very excited about the findings 00:14:39.61\00:14:42.14 that will come out of it. 00:14:42.18\00:14:43.51 The offering will also go to support 00:14:43.55\00:14:46.72 one year of a graduate research student 00:14:46.75\00:14:50.15 and so, what we're really doing is helping raise 00:14:50.19\00:14:54.22 new generations of scientific researchers 00:14:54.26\00:14:57.39 that will continue to uncover the hand of God in creation. 00:14:57.43\00:15:01.76 Oh, that's wonderful, thank you so much Garrett 00:15:01.80\00:15:04.93 for sharing with us something that... it may be foreign 00:15:04.97\00:15:07.80 or not as well understood by us 00:15:07.84\00:15:11.37 but certainly reaching those in a community 00:15:11.41\00:15:14.24 who would otherwise not have any understanding 00:15:14.28\00:15:16.78 to start to see God's hand in their work. 00:15:16.81\00:15:19.01 Very happy. 00:15:19.05\00:15:20.38 Thank you very much. 00:15:20.42\00:15:22.78 Now, joining me is Moise Ratsara. 00:15:22.82\00:15:29.06 He's the President of GYC... Generation Youth Christ. 00:15:29.09\00:15:34.33 There have been a few iterations of that title 00:15:34.36\00:15:37.67 but the purpose and the mission has been the same 00:15:37.70\00:15:40.97 and Moise, thank you for joining us today. 00:15:41.00\00:15:43.30 It's so nice to have more young people involved 00:15:43.34\00:15:46.57 in... in ASI isn't it? 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.24 Amen. 00:15:48.28\00:15:49.61 So, why don't you share with us 00:15:49.64\00:15:51.11 what's happening with GYC or what I should ask is, 00:15:51.18\00:15:54.85 what has been the purpose and the focus 00:15:54.88\00:15:58.55 all through the last many years that it's been in existence. 00:15:58.59\00:16:02.26 Yes, well, it's good to be with all of you here at ASI 00:16:02.29\00:16:05.93 and to answer your question, Debbie, 00:16:05.99\00:16:08.43 is, GYC has been all about the Bible, sacrifice 00:16:08.46\00:16:14.10 and being all in for Jesus. 00:16:14.14\00:16:17.34 This last year, we had outreach 00:16:17.37\00:16:20.51 which was one of our biggest focus on the city of Phoenix 00:16:20.54\00:16:23.75 and we had ordered about 37 buses 00:16:23.78\00:16:27.12 to... you know... school buses 00:16:27.15\00:16:30.42 to have young people go out to the city of Phoenix 00:16:30.45\00:16:32.69 and there were so many young people 00:16:32.72\00:16:34.72 who wanted to go on outreach 00:16:34.76\00:16:36.19 that we did not enough buses. 00:16:36.22\00:16:37.59 So, as a result, about 250 of them 00:16:37.63\00:16:41.96 who wanted to go on outreach... 00:16:42.16\00:16:43.50 we didn't have the buses for them... 00:16:43.53\00:16:46.40 so they decided to go out on their own 00:16:46.43\00:16:47.97 and take initiative and go down in the city of Phoenix 00:16:48.00\00:16:51.57 and just pass out literature. 00:16:51.61\00:16:53.11 Now, you are telling me that you had the buses, 00:16:53.14\00:16:56.54 there weren't enough, 00:16:56.58\00:16:57.91 you ordered more buses, 00:16:57.95\00:16:59.28 that still wasn't enough 00:16:59.31\00:17:00.65 and so then, this was the outcome... 00:17:00.68\00:17:02.02 that they just kind of went on their own, 00:17:02.05\00:17:03.92 so, they didn't go home, they just went out. 00:17:03.99\00:17:05.85 Yes. 00:17:05.89\00:17:07.22 Okay, that's remarkable 00:17:07.26\00:17:08.59 and this is actually the project 00:17:08.62\00:17:09.96 that was supported from the offering last year. 00:17:09.99\00:17:11.59 Exactly. 00:17:11.63\00:17:12.96 Okay, so, do you have any stories or testimonies 00:17:12.99\00:17:15.73 about the experiences that some of them may have had? 00:17:15.76\00:17:18.10 So, yeah, one of the things about GYC that really excites me 00:17:18.13\00:17:22.40 is that... not only is it about numbers or whatever that is 00:17:22.44\00:17:26.64 but it touches lives. 00:17:26.68\00:17:28.21 There was a young girl that decided to come to GYC 00:17:28.24\00:17:32.28 about two years ago 00:17:32.31\00:17:33.78 and she was going to a secular campus, 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.45 she wasn't an Adventist, 00:17:36.48\00:17:37.82 nobody in her family was a Seventh-day Adventist 00:17:37.85\00:17:40.29 but her friends invited her to go to the youth gathering. 00:17:40.32\00:17:43.56 So, she said, "Okay, I'm going to go. " 00:17:43.63\00:17:45.43 And as she went the first night, 00:17:45.46\00:17:47.56 there was an appeal to surrender your life to Christ, 00:17:47.60\00:17:52.00 to not be 50% in but 100% in for the gospel of Jesus 00:17:52.03\00:17:56.37 and she responded to that appeal, 00:17:56.40\00:17:59.64 right then and there, she decided to give up 00:17:59.67\00:18:02.54 all of her plans that she had for that year, 00:18:02.58\00:18:05.38 and she gave up her life to become a missionary 00:18:05.41\00:18:08.18 to the public campuses in Michigan. 00:18:08.25\00:18:10.72 As a result of that, 00:18:10.75\00:18:12.89 she started to reach out to her friends 00:18:12.92\00:18:14.89 and she had a big circle of influence because she... 00:18:14.92\00:18:17.53 most of her friends were not Seventh-day Adventists, 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.76 and as a result, she brought them this year to Phoenix 00:18:20.80\00:18:23.93 and as she brought them to Phoenix, 00:18:23.97\00:18:26.53 her Bible-Study contacts, 00:18:26.57\00:18:27.90 some of them have already made decisions for baptism. 00:18:27.94\00:18:30.47 Interviewer: Amen. 00:18:30.51\00:18:31.84 So the cycle is continuing, 00:18:31.87\00:18:33.21 young people are taking ownership of their church 00:18:33.24\00:18:35.28 and they see that they are the future 00:18:35.31\00:18:37.25 and this is their church so we praise the Lord for that. 00:18:37.28\00:18:39.41 Amen, so all of this 00:18:39.45\00:18:40.98 from a non-Seventh-day Adventist young person who came to GYC. 00:18:41.05\00:18:45.49 Amen. 00:18:45.55\00:18:47.06 Excellent, now, I know that as we look to the horizon, 00:18:47.09\00:18:50.53 you have an Annual Convention that takes place 00:18:50.56\00:18:54.06 and this year is going to be very interesting 00:18:54.10\00:18:57.53 and I know we have a promo video I'd like to have... 00:18:57.57\00:19:00.10 call that video up so that you can see now... 00:19:00.14\00:19:02.57 we're going to talk a little bit about 00:19:02.60\00:19:03.94 what the plans are for GYC. 00:19:03.97\00:19:05.37 Music... 00:19:05.41\00:19:07.81 What if we weren't afraid... 00:19:07.84\00:19:10.38 music 00:19:10.41\00:19:12.01 and what if we were no longer bound by the shackles 00:19:12.05\00:19:14.58 or applause or censure 00:19:14.62\00:19:16.32 and what if we were willing to have radical faith... 00:19:16.35\00:19:20.09 faith that knew no limitations? 00:19:20.12\00:19:22.62 What if we were freed from the slavish dictates of a culture 00:19:22.69\00:19:27.80 that has no truth? 00:19:27.83\00:19:29.53 What if we were fueled by the grace of God 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.43 through wrestling with Him on our knees? 00:19:32.47\00:19:35.27 What if we actually believe 00:19:35.30\00:19:37.94 that Christ's righteousness is ours? 00:19:37.97\00:19:40.08 What if God's love transformed us so much 00:19:40.14\00:19:43.81 that we would rather die than break a single commandment? 00:19:43.85\00:19:46.78 What if we were willing to truly lay self aside 00:19:46.82\00:19:50.55 to make room for the Holy Spirit? 00:19:50.59\00:19:52.59 It's simple, 00:19:52.62\00:19:55.52 the gospel would go to the whole world 00:19:55.56\00:19:57.43 in this generation. 00:19:57.46\00:20:00.96 Music... 00:20:01.03\00:20:08.07 more music... 00:20:08.10\00:20:14.31 Wow! it sounds very riveting. 00:20:14.34\00:20:16.61 Now, I know that every theme carries with it a mission. 00:20:16.64\00:20:20.98 What is the focus or mission 00:20:21.02\00:20:23.39 of this upcoming Annual Convention for GYC? 00:20:23.42\00:20:26.99 So, our theme for this year is: To the End 00:20:27.02\00:20:30.56 based on Acts chapter 1 and verse 8. 00:20:30.59\00:20:33.73 We decided that as a movement, 00:20:33.76\00:20:37.37 we need to be about mission as well 00:20:37.40\00:20:39.53 and be relentless to go to the ends of the earth 00:20:39.57\00:20:42.40 so, we're going back to the city of Houston 00:20:42.44\00:20:44.97 and some of you know that last year in Houston, 00:20:45.01\00:20:47.58 there was a major flooding that happened there 00:20:47.61\00:20:50.15 but something else about Houston is that, 00:20:50.18\00:20:52.98 Houston is so diverse. 00:20:53.01\00:20:54.95 As a matter of fact, when people have supper in Houston, 00:20:54.98\00:20:58.69 one in every two houses speaks a different language. 00:20:58.72\00:21:02.42 There are so many people-groups in Houston 00:21:02.46\00:21:05.39 that are from unreached areas that live there, 00:21:05.46\00:21:07.96 so, we decided that this year for outreach, 00:21:08.00\00:21:10.47 we're going to go to those communities 00:21:10.50\00:21:12.00 that... that are hard to reach around the world 00:21:12.03\00:21:15.37 that live in Houston... 00:21:15.40\00:21:16.74 that have a big presence in Houston 00:21:16.77\00:21:19.24 and go to those communities and reach out to them 00:21:19.27\00:21:22.08 with the gospel message. 00:21:22.11\00:21:23.45 Amen, so, once again, you are adding to the demographic 00:21:23.48\00:21:27.15 that GYC young people want to reach 00:21:27.18\00:21:29.78 and reaching the refugees 00:21:29.82\00:21:31.92 is a very important and a very worthy work and very needy one 00:21:31.95\00:21:36.32 so I applaud GYC for that insight 00:21:36.36\00:21:39.63 and we will continue to pray for GYC 00:21:39.66\00:21:41.60 that God will continue to direct you. 00:21:41.63\00:21:43.53 Thank you so much. 00:21:43.57\00:21:44.90 Thank you. 00:21:44.93\00:21:46.97 Pause... 00:21:47.00\00:21:49.10 The main reason I do what I do 00:21:49.14\00:21:51.04 is because I'm really just tired. 00:21:51.07\00:21:56.24 Every time, I hear the news, 00:21:56.31\00:21:58.68 every time I look around me 00:21:58.71\00:22:01.28 I see the world is just a mess. 00:22:01.32\00:22:03.85 Horrible stories coming in from overseas, 00:22:03.89\00:22:06.52 you look at the newspaper 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.89 or you just look around the neighborhood 00:22:08.92\00:22:10.99 and you see people in pain and misery, 00:22:11.03\00:22:13.06 whether that's in Society 00:22:13.09\00:22:14.86 or whether it's just somebody over here 00:22:14.93\00:22:17.30 whose marriage is falling apart, 00:22:17.33\00:22:19.73 some kid who's lonely, 00:22:19.77\00:22:21.67 you have all these horrible things 00:22:21.70\00:22:23.51 that are going on in the world, 00:22:23.54\00:22:25.31 you got some people... 00:22:25.34\00:22:27.14 it seems like they wake up in the morning, 00:22:27.18\00:22:30.11 trying to figure out how to make the world more miserable, 00:22:30.15\00:22:33.31 more painful 00:22:33.35\00:22:34.68 and I had just decided that enough is enough 00:22:34.72\00:22:38.65 you know, 00:22:38.69\00:22:40.39 and I just figured that if there's going to be people 00:22:40.42\00:22:41.92 out there in the world 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.32 trying to make the world a miserable place, 00:22:43.36\00:22:44.69 I for one was going to be one person 00:22:44.73\00:22:47.06 who was pushing back and going the other way. 00:22:47.10\00:22:51.13 I wanted to make sure that there as at least somebody 00:22:51.17\00:22:53.87 standing up for the truth... 00:22:53.90\00:22:55.24 standing up for what was right... 00:22:55.27\00:22:57.54 standing up to help somebody who was hurting. 00:22:57.57\00:22:59.61 I might not be able to change the world, 00:22:59.64\00:23:01.31 but that drives me. 00:23:01.34\00:23:03.88 I am so angry at all the stuff that goes on in the world 00:23:03.95\00:23:08.95 and my revenge is to do something good. 00:23:08.98\00:23:11.75 My revenge is to do something right. 00:23:11.82\00:23:14.52 My revenge... when people are hurting... 00:23:14.56\00:23:17.26 is to help. 00:23:17.29\00:23:20.16 Pause... 00:23:20.20\00:23:25.17 A mighty fortress is our God, 00:23:25.20\00:23:32.74 A bulwark never failing; 00:23:32.77\00:23:40.45 Our helper He, amid the flood 00:23:40.48\00:23:48.66 Of mortal ills prevailing. 00:23:48.69\00:23:56.26 Doth seek to work us woe; 00:23:56.30\00:24:02.47 His craft and power are great; 00:24:02.50\00:24:07.98 And armed with cruel hate, 00:24:08.01\00:24:14.25 And armed with cruel hate... 00:24:14.28\00:24:21.19 On earth is not his 00:24:21.22\00:24:25.06 equal. 00:24:25.09\00:24:29.26 Guitar strumming the tune... 00:24:29.30\00:26:52.94 That word above all earthly powers, 00:26:52.97\00:27:00.15 No thanks to them, abideth; 00:27:00.18\00:27:08.52 The Spirit and the gifts are ours 00:27:08.56\00:27:17.30 Through Him who with us sideth: 00:27:17.33\00:27:24.21 Let goods and kindred go, 00:27:24.24\00:27:30.45 This mortal life also; 00:27:30.48\00:27:36.52 The body they may kill: 00:27:36.55\00:27:42.59 God's truth abideth still, 00:27:42.62\00:27:49.23 His kingdom is 00:27:49.26\00:27:54.50 forever. 00:27:54.54\00:28:02.11 Audience: Amen. 00:28:02.14\00:28:09.18 Wonderful, beautiful music this morning, 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.32 isn't it great to be at ASI? 00:28:12.35\00:28:14.49 I just... I love the music at ASI. 00:28:14.52\00:28:16.99 Amen. 00:28:17.03\00:28:18.36 This morning we're talking to Kyle Allen, 00:28:18.39\00:28:20.56 former Secretary/Treasurer of ASI 00:28:20.60\00:28:22.46 who now works for Adventist World Radio, 00:28:22.50\00:28:25.60 he's Vice President for Adventist World Radio. 00:28:25.63\00:28:27.70 Kyle: I still love ASI. 00:28:27.74\00:28:29.07 Interviewer: But he's having a little difficulty 00:28:29.10\00:28:31.47 weaning himself off the ASI experience, so... 00:28:31.51\00:28:33.98 Kyle: ASI is still good, I love it. 00:28:34.01\00:28:35.34 Interviewer: Amen. 00:28:35.38\00:28:36.71 Kyle: But AWR is amazing! Amen. 00:28:36.75\00:28:38.88 Interviewer: So, here we are today, Kyle, 00:28:38.91\00:28:41.25 we're talking about something very interesting... AWR... 00:28:41.28\00:28:45.32 just what is the reach of AWR, 00:28:45.35\00:28:47.49 tell us just a little bit about Adventist World Radio. 00:28:47.52\00:28:49.72 How many know about Adventist World Radio? 00:28:49.76\00:28:51.53 Amen... lot of hands go up... 00:28:51.56\00:28:53.03 Adventist World Radio broadcasts in over 80 languages, Steve, 00:28:53.06\00:28:55.66 around the world. 00:28:55.70\00:28:57.03 Over 1,000 radio stations that the church operates 00:28:57.07\00:29:00.00 not only on FM and AM shortwave 00:29:00.04\00:29:02.57 but also, over the internet now, 00:29:02.60\00:29:04.37 Podcasts, Facebook Live, YouTube... 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.17 every avenue we can take 00:29:06.21\00:29:08.21 to take the gospel to the earth in this generation. 00:29:08.24\00:29:10.65 Amen, so, Adventist World Radio 00:29:10.68\00:29:13.68 is putting out a lot of information every day, 00:29:13.72\00:29:16.82 80 languages... 1,000s of hours of programming, 00:29:16.85\00:29:19.85 different methods of sending out the good news of Jesus, 00:29:19.89\00:29:23.19 but there's some response to that that's happening 00:29:23.22\00:29:26.33 and, you know, it's not just about getting the message out, 00:29:26.36\00:29:30.00 it's about connecting with those people, 00:29:30.27\00:29:31.87 how is AWR solving that problem? 00:29:31.90\00:29:34.07 That's right, so, we actually took a new initiative... 00:29:34.10\00:29:36.20 our President Duane McKey said, "You know, 00:29:36.24\00:29:37.71 broadcasting is great... " amen... 00:29:37.74\00:29:39.94 "broadcasting is great 00:29:39.97\00:29:41.38 but we don't want to just end with a broadcast, 00:29:41.41\00:29:44.51 it needs to end in decisions for Christ. " 00:29:44.55\00:29:46.95 So, our new motto is, "Broadcast to Baptism. " 00:29:46.98\00:29:49.32 Because we want people to follow Jesus 00:29:49.35\00:29:51.49 and decide to be a part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:29:51.52\00:29:53.52 So... so... around the world... 00:29:53.56\00:29:55.19 So, Kyle, wait a minute now. 00:29:55.22\00:29:56.79 If I'm listening to the radio in some foreign country 00:29:56.83\00:30:01.33 where there's really not any... 00:30:01.36\00:30:02.96 any presence, maybe, even of a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:30:03.00\00:30:06.07 but the message is coming in, 00:30:06.13\00:30:08.54 how are you connecting with those people? 00:30:08.57\00:30:10.34 So, that's... that's the important question, Steve, 00:30:10.37\00:30:12.67 how do we connect with people who are hearing our message 00:30:12.74\00:30:15.74 not only over the radio waves 00:30:15.78\00:30:17.91 but also finding us on the internet, 00:30:17.95\00:30:19.58 connecting through various social media channels 00:30:19.61\00:30:22.42 and not only AWR, Steve, but if you think about it, 00:30:22.45\00:30:25.35 how many ways does our church reach out to the world? 00:30:25.39\00:30:28.26 Kyle, just go in the Exhibit Hall 00:30:28.29\00:30:30.79 and walk down the aisle, you'll see Voice of Prophecy, 00:30:30.83\00:30:33.53 and It is Written and Amazing Facts 00:30:33.56\00:30:35.73 and Hope Channel... 00:30:35.76\00:30:37.37 and 3ABN... 00:30:37.40\00:30:38.73 the list goes on and on... 00:30:38.77\00:30:40.10 All of these entities are sowing seed out there, 00:30:40.14\00:30:42.64 getting the Word out, 00:30:42.70\00:30:44.04 but how do we connect those people? 00:30:44.07\00:30:46.17 Exactly, so... so... so we said, 00:30:46.21\00:30:48.44 "Could there be a way that we could create 00:30:48.48\00:30:51.28 a center for digital evangelism that would connect the dots... 00:30:51.31\00:30:55.15 that would enable us to connect with the people 00:30:55.18\00:30:58.19 who are searching for us... 00:30:58.22\00:30:59.55 who are responding to our broadcasts... 00:30:59.59\00:31:01.59 who are liking our Facebook Posts... 00:31:01.62\00:31:03.49 who are searching even on Google for... 00:31:03.53\00:31:05.36 for what happens when you die? 00:31:05.39\00:31:06.73 Or what does the Sabbath mean?" 00:31:06.76\00:31:08.16 Connecting with those people... 00:31:08.20\00:31:09.76 building relationships with them digitally 00:31:09.80\00:31:12.23 and then leading them to local churches 00:31:12.27\00:31:14.67 and ultimately to baptism. 00:31:14.70\00:31:16.04 That's what we want to do. 00:31:16.07\00:31:17.41 Praise God, so, such a thing would require 00:31:17.44\00:31:21.54 some interesting logistics, 00:31:21.58\00:31:23.45 where is this Center going to be built 00:31:23.48\00:31:25.45 and how does that work? 00:31:25.48\00:31:26.82 So, the goal is to start with a Center for Digital Evangelism 00:31:26.85\00:31:30.45 based in Manila, Philippines, amen, 00:31:30.49\00:31:32.25 anybody have ever been to Philippines? 00:31:32.32\00:31:34.06 It's a beautiful country 00:31:34.09\00:31:35.42 and it's going to be based there at the Division Office, 00:31:35.46\00:31:37.89 the Southern Asia Pacific Division 00:31:37.93\00:31:39.49 by God's grace, we're going to have 60 missionaries, 00:31:39.53\00:31:42.20 young adults who are going to come 00:31:42.23\00:31:43.57 and be digital missionaries, Steve, 00:31:43.60\00:31:45.03 who will serve to connect people who are searching for God, 00:31:45.07\00:31:49.00 searching for truth, all over the world, 00:31:49.07\00:31:50.67 connect them to local churches 00:31:50.71\00:31:52.54 and ultimately leading them to baptism. 00:31:52.57\00:31:54.01 So, these young people... these missionaries... 00:31:54.04\00:31:56.18 they're going to be sitting there 00:31:56.21\00:31:57.55 responding in different languages... 00:31:57.58\00:31:58.91 they're going to be responding to different media inputs... 00:31:58.95\00:32:03.39 this is amazing! 00:32:03.42\00:32:04.82 It's a huge project and we're very excited. 00:32:04.85\00:32:06.86 We believe that this could be a game changer 00:32:06.89\00:32:09.62 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:32:09.69\00:32:11.03 There are 100s of 1,000s of people, Steve, around the world 00:32:11.06\00:32:14.06 who are searching for God 00:32:14.10\00:32:15.50 and we need to find them and connect them back 00:32:15.53\00:32:17.43 to our Seventh-day Adventist Churches. 00:32:17.47\00:32:19.07 So, Kyle, traditionally, we think of the old methods, 00:32:19.10\00:32:25.81 you know the old school of us thinks of this way 00:32:25.84\00:32:28.38 somebody sees something and they write us a letter 00:32:28.41\00:32:30.95 or they send a post card in or they... 00:32:30.98\00:32:33.52 Handwritten letter... 00:32:33.55\00:32:34.88 Yeah... something like an old handwritten letter 00:32:34.92\00:32:36.35 or maybe even a phone call 00:32:36.38\00:32:37.85 where they put their name in a database or something 00:32:37.89\00:32:40.56 and eventually, they get responded to, 00:32:40.59\00:32:42.76 that lag time is just too much, 00:32:42.79\00:32:44.36 what is your goal as Center for Digital Evangelism, 00:32:44.39\00:32:47.40 how soon do you want to respond to somebody's initial reach out? God totally blessed 00:35:03.60\00:35:05.20 and because of that, 00:35:05.23\00:35:06.60 we will actually... Adventist World Radio 00:35:06.63\00:35:09.07 is actually going to be able to have licenses in two cities 00:35:09.10\00:35:12.44 of Congo... that have always been forbidden previously, amen. 00:35:12.47\00:35:15.51 But, wait a minute, now, 00:35:15.54\00:35:16.88 you're telling me that medical missionary work 00:35:16.91\00:35:19.28 is resulting in Radio Station Licenses, 00:35:19.31\00:35:21.98 is that what I'm hearing? 00:35:22.02\00:35:23.35 That is correct, it's unbelievable, 00:35:23.39\00:35:24.82 again, whole-person care makes a full impact 00:35:24.85\00:35:27.46 not just on the individuals 00:35:27.49\00:35:28.99 but even on the Governments, it's unbelievable. 00:35:29.02\00:35:31.09 That's amazing to see what God is doing 00:35:31.13\00:35:33.63 using these simple methods that He's told us about for years. 00:35:33.70\00:35:36.56 That's right. 00:35:36.60\00:35:37.93 Well, praise God, now you just returned 00:35:37.97\00:35:39.87 from participating in an AWR event in the Philippines, 00:35:39.90\00:35:42.77 what happened there? 00:35:42.80\00:35:44.14 That is... it was unbelievable... 00:35:44.17\00:35:46.88 8,742 patients in three days... 00:35:46.91\00:35:49.71 the largest event that I've had the opportunity 00:35:49.74\00:35:51.58 of participating in, with only a Gideon Army of 300. 00:35:51.61\00:35:55.35 God blessed tremendously amen. 00:35:55.38\00:35:58.39 Now, Kyle, there was something unique, 00:35:58.42\00:36:01.19 a couple of unique things about this event in the Philippines 00:36:01.22\00:36:03.43 and I know you were there participating in this 00:36:03.46\00:36:05.23 because you are the AWR Vice President 00:36:05.26\00:36:08.23 so you couldn't skip out on this, 00:36:08.26\00:36:10.33 you're there, God is impressing you 00:36:10.37\00:36:12.37 to do something just a little different 00:36:12.40\00:36:13.80 on how you're combining the Medical Missionary Work 00:36:13.84\00:36:16.04 with the... with the presentation of the gospel, 00:36:16.07\00:36:17.94 tell us about that. 00:36:17.97\00:36:19.37 That's right, and I just want to say, 00:36:19.41\00:36:20.74 "I love the Pathway to Health" I'm not a medical professional, 00:36:20.78\00:36:22.14 I know nothing about Medicine 00:36:22.18\00:36:23.51 but I just love being there, amen 00:36:23.55\00:36:25.11 because it's powerful when you see people healed 00:36:25.15\00:36:27.32 and you see them receiving that physical healing 00:36:27.38\00:36:29.58 but the thing is, Steve, we have always believed 00:36:29.62\00:36:31.75 that it's not just physical healing that people need, 00:36:31.79\00:36:33.86 they need mental and spiritual healing as well. 00:36:33.89\00:36:36.02 It's Total Person Health, right? 00:36:36.06\00:36:37.49 Total Person Health 00:36:37.53\00:36:38.86 and so, at previous Pathways, we have done an evening meeting 00:36:38.89\00:36:42.26 where we presented the spiritual... 00:36:42.33\00:36:44.07 and invited the patients, 00:36:44.10\00:36:45.43 but the problem was, it's a long day, right, 00:36:45.47\00:36:47.90 you're standing in line and you're waiting 00:36:47.94\00:36:50.11 and a lot of the patients, 00:36:50.14\00:36:51.47 they, frankly, they just can't stay the whole day 00:36:51.51\00:36:53.21 and come to the evening meeting, 00:36:53.24\00:36:54.58 so, God gave us an idea, God gave you an idea, Dr. Lela. 00:36:54.61\00:36:57.05 God... God... 00:36:57.08\00:36:58.41 It was... what if we shut the whole clinic down for an hour. 00:36:58.45\00:37:01.88 Now that was scary, Kyle. 00:37:01.92\00:37:03.25 Yeah. 00:37:03.28\00:37:04.62 We lose that hour of seeing patients. 00:37:04.65\00:37:06.32 Right, because we don't have many hours in the day. 00:37:06.35\00:37:07.92 Exactly. 00:37:07.96\00:37:09.29 So, what if you shut the Clinic down, you serve a lunch 00:37:09.32\00:37:10.99 and in the middle of the day, 00:37:11.03\00:37:12.36 you present the Total Person Health Message. 00:37:12.39\00:37:14.83 Interviewer: Along with the gospel. 00:37:14.86\00:37:16.20 Kyle: Along with the gospel, right here, 00:37:16.23\00:37:17.87 with all the patients there and so that's what we did. 00:37:17.90\00:37:20.57 They don't have to come back. 00:37:20.60\00:37:22.14 Amazing. 00:37:22.17\00:37:23.51 So, at noon time, for each of those three days, 00:37:23.54\00:37:25.17 we shut the Clinic down, 00:37:25.21\00:37:26.54 the patients were all there, sitting in the bleachers 00:37:26.57\00:37:27.91 even standing in line still, eating their lunch, 00:37:27.94\00:37:29.74 and Dr. Lela came up, 00:37:29.78\00:37:31.28 presented a physical, mental health message, 00:37:31.31\00:37:33.65 and then she bridged to the spiritual... 00:37:33.68\00:37:35.95 I came up, talked about some spiritual help with Daniel 1... 00:37:35.98\00:37:38.99 how to make good choices, 00:37:39.02\00:37:40.36 Daniel 2 the second day and the third day 00:37:40.39\00:37:41.79 talking about the hope that we have in Christ 00:37:41.82\00:37:43.96 and in the second coming and in heaven. 00:37:43.99\00:37:45.59 What was the result of that? 00:37:45.63\00:37:47.43 Well, it was amazing Steve, 00:37:47.46\00:37:49.20 the first couple of days, it was a little rocky, 00:37:49.23\00:37:51.30 because we had no experience before. 00:37:51.33\00:37:52.90 Lela: We had to change everything completely. 00:37:52.93\00:37:55.07 Kyle: But by the third day, God was really moving 00:37:55.10\00:37:57.21 and the people were following, 00:37:57.24\00:37:58.67 the people were tracking with us. 00:37:58.74\00:38:00.11 Lela: You could see them, they were just intense. 00:38:00.14\00:38:01.84 Kyle: And so, you were presenting. 00:38:01.88\00:38:03.88 Lela: I presented on the emotional 00:38:03.91\00:38:05.81 and the physical aspects of the frontal lobe 00:38:05.85\00:38:07.85 and things that we can do to improve 00:38:07.88\00:38:09.48 our functioning of our frontal lobe 00:38:09.52\00:38:10.89 and hearing the Holy Spirit more and then, what happened? 00:38:10.92\00:38:13.46 And then, right as you were making your appeal, 00:38:13.49\00:38:15.42 it had been completely good weather 00:38:15.46\00:38:17.43 and then, all of a sudden... 00:38:17.46\00:38:18.79 as you were making your initial appeal... 00:38:18.83\00:38:20.16 Lela: Out of the blue, from nowhere, 00:38:20.20\00:38:21.53 thunder and great torrents or rain... booof... 00:38:21.56\00:38:23.97 and... but it was like God just took my voice 00:38:24.00\00:38:26.77 and took it above the storm... 00:38:26.80\00:38:28.20 I handed it off to you and you carried it. 00:38:28.27\00:38:30.24 I kept... and then I talked about heaven 00:38:30.27\00:38:32.17 and I was trying to lead to... to making people... 00:38:32.21\00:38:34.74 bringing people to make a decision for Christ 00:38:34.78\00:38:36.75 and that Friday night, Steve, just two days later, 00:38:36.78\00:38:39.68 an Evangelistic Series was starting 00:38:39.71\00:38:41.78 on the island of Palawan 00:38:41.82\00:38:43.15 and we wanted to invite the people to come and participate, 00:38:43.18\00:38:45.39 and so, Dr. Lela, you came up, 00:38:45.42\00:38:47.06 we were making our appeal for the people to accept Jesus 00:38:47.09\00:38:50.03 to stand and accept Jesus and to come Friday night 00:38:50.06\00:38:53.09 and right as we're making our appeal... 00:38:53.13\00:38:54.66 Lela: Again... boom... 00:38:54.70\00:38:56.53 Kyle: The thunder comes... the lightning comes... 00:38:56.56\00:38:57.90 it was like Satan was trying to... 00:38:57.93\00:38:59.27 we could feel the spiritual battle 00:38:59.30\00:39:00.64 but guys, I'm here to tell you today, 00:39:00.67\00:39:02.00 everybody in that auditorium stood up... 00:39:02.04\00:39:03.84 2,000 people stood up... hands went up... 00:39:03.91\00:39:05.61 It was unbelievable... hands... arms... 00:39:05.64\00:39:07.51 everybody standing up... it was beautiful. 00:39:07.54\00:39:09.31 It was beautiful... people accepting Christ 00:39:09.34\00:39:11.08 and saying they were going to come 00:39:11.11\00:39:12.45 and I'm happy to report by God's grace, 00:39:12.48\00:39:15.18 our Palawan President is actually here, 00:39:15.22\00:39:16.55 I don't know where Pastor Malabad is 00:39:16.58\00:39:18.22 but we had 1,500 baptisms 00:39:18.25\00:39:20.22 just last Sabbath in Palawan... praise God. 00:39:20.26\00:39:22.59 Amen. 00:39:22.62\00:39:23.96 So, friends, if you want to participate 00:39:23.99\00:39:28.00 in a Pathway to Health Event 00:39:28.03\00:39:29.40 in Dallas, Fort Worth area in just a few weeks... 00:39:29.43\00:39:33.50 Lela: September 19 to 21. 00:39:33.54\00:39:35.24 We're going to be having another event there, 00:39:35.27\00:39:37.84 you can come and join and learn how to do 00:39:37.87\00:39:40.41 Total Person Healthcare 00:39:40.48\00:39:42.11 and share the gospel with... in a very amazing way 00:39:42.14\00:39:45.08 join us there... find out more, 00:39:45.11\00:39:47.02 come to the Booth... the Pathway... 00:39:47.05\00:39:48.88 get more information... thank you so much. 00:39:48.92\00:39:51.12
