at the promises that the Lord

Now since we talk
about our greatest need,

about our greatest need.

Look at the promise
that the Lord has made.

And the Bible says

The Bible says, "And my
God shall supply..." What?

according to His riches

in glory by Christ Jesus."

Now a lot of times
we read that verse,

we think of money right away.
00:06:04.36\00:06:06.03
Because the word,
"riches," is in that.
00:06:06.39\00:06:08.76
We think, "Well, I need
money, so God is going to supply
00:06:08.80\00:06:11.57
all my needs because He's rich."
00:06:11.60\00:06:13.64
And we start saying,
"Well, how much do I need?"
00:06:13.84\00:06:15.70
And we start
calling on God for money.
00:06:15.74\00:06:18.24
But that's not
what that text means.
00:06:18.27\00:06:20.24
Because it says, "according
to His riches in glory
00:06:20.58\00:06:24.18
by Christ Jesus."

And the Bible says, "Fear
God and give glory to Him."

Now the riches is the riches
not only of His provision,
00:06:29.68\00:06:34.32
but the riches of His grace.

And is God rich in grace?

Yes He is.

But not only the richness of His
grace, and the riches of glory,

and the riches of His provision,
but also God is rich in mercy.

God is rich, period.

But when we read that text,
in order for us to understand

the benefit of this
lesson about our greatest need,

we need to know that
whatever that need is,

So when you get stuck
on the financial needs,

don't pause there,
because God can provide

every need that we have.

And sometimes we have
the need of forgiveness.

Sometimes we have the
need of Him leading us

to the place of repentance.

Sometimes we have
the need of comfort.

And sometimes we
have the need of just

knowing that we count.

And the Lord will provide
all of our need according to

His riches in glory.

Now in order for us to
even benefit further from this,

we need to understand a few
things that's true about us.

the book of Jeremiah.

Because when we were
born into this world,

we were not born rich.

I'm not talking
about financially.

Because some people inherited
money from their relatives,
00:07:54.00\00:07:56.44
some people were beneficiaries,
some people were executors.

Some people didn't know
how much was laid up for them
00:08:03.75\00:08:07.05
until their loved one died
or they inherited something.

Well you know,
we are inheritors.
00:08:11.62\00:08:13.66
We are inheritors of the grace
of God, the salvation of Jesus.

But we ought to understand
something about our condition.

look at how we were born.

This is kind of
a depressing text.

I think that's
an understatement.

look together at verse 9.

Now the reason why
this passage is there,

you only have to
understand it in context of

what the Lord said in verse 7.

Because we often
read Jeremiah 17:9,

but we don't
really read before that.

The context of this is,
you can trust the Lord's heart

but you can't trust man's heart.

Look at verse
9. Look at verse 7.

The Bible says, Jeremiah
17:7, "Blessed is the man..."

Who does what?

"...who trusts in the Lord,
and whose hope is in the Lord."

"For he shall be like a
tree planted by the waters..."

Sounds like Psalm 1, right?

Planted by the waters.

"...which spreads out
its roots by the river,

and will not
fear when heat comes;

but its leaf will be
green, and will not be anxious

in the year of drought, nor
will cease from yielding fruit."

Now that's the context of it.

In other words,
you can trust God.

Whatever you commit to God,
He's going to make it prosper.

But he says,
"But what about man?"

So if you now try to
put your trust towards man,

what's going to happen?

This is where verse 9 comes in.

The Bible says, "The
heart is deceitful above..."

How many things?

things..." And what else?

"...desperately wicked."

And here's the
question. "Who can know it?"

We can know God's heart
because He's made promises.

He says, "You'll be
like a tree planted.

Your leaves won't wither.

Whatever you plant is
going to come to fruition."

And the tree doesn't even have
to be anxious when it's hot.

And the context there
is, when drought comes,

whatever you plant God
will bring to fruition.

So God is able to
supply all of our need.

He's able to prevent drought
from causing our crops to fail.

provide all of our need.

But he said, "But
don't trust your heart.

Because your heart may make a
promise, but it can't keep it."

illustrate this point.

A number of years ago
I saw a picture of a man

who had during the
Christmas season gone from

one orphanage to the
other and he had a stack of

one hundred dollar bills.
00:12:34.62\00:12:35.95
And he was giving
out hundred dollar bills
00:12:36.99\00:12:38.99
to people in the orphanages.
00:12:39.02\00:12:41.06
He went from one
orphanage to the other.
00:12:41.32\00:12:42.89
He had a stack and he continued
doing that until, I guess,
00:12:42.92\00:12:45.36
whatever he
allotted had run out.
00:12:45.69\00:12:47.40
Now somebody said,
"What a good heart!"
00:12:48.16\00:12:50.70
And they found out
that the man was an atheist.
00:12:51.43\00:12:54.74
Didn't even believe in God.
00:12:55.20\00:12:56.74
So what somebody concluded was,
it doesn't take a good heart

to do a good deed.

It doesn't take a
heart that believes in Christ

to give away money.

But money is not the
measurement of our salvation.

Finances is not the
measurement of our salvation.

So here is what the person said.

It doesn't take a good
heart to do a good deed,

People find money for things
that are important to them.
