Hello, I am Shelley Quinn, 00:00:20.22\00:00:21.55 and we welcome you to A Sharper Focus. 00:00:21.58\00:00:24.42 This is the Wednesday night Bible study 00:00:24.45\00:00:26.05 that comes to you straight 00:00:26.09\00:00:27.46 from our Thompsonville Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.49 And we're so glad that you're joining us, 00:00:30.53\00:00:32.79 whether you're watching on television, 00:00:32.83\00:00:34.40 or the internet, 00:00:34.43\00:00:35.90 or if you're listening on the radio. 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.80 And tonight, 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.17 I am actually standing in for Pastor John Lomacang. 00:00:39.20\00:00:42.34 He is travelling, 00:00:42.37\00:00:43.71 so, I know that you all are doing a study 00:00:43.74\00:00:46.17 on judgment, 00:00:46.21\00:00:47.64 and I've really been praying, Lord, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.54 what do You want me to speak on tonight 00:00:49.58\00:00:51.88 because I didn't want to get you too far off the track, 00:00:51.91\00:00:54.48 but what I thought we would do 00:00:54.52\00:00:56.18 is talk about a topic that is kin to judgment 00:00:56.22\00:01:01.16 and that topic is, of course, repentance. 00:01:01.19\00:01:04.19 So tonight what we're going to do is, 00:01:04.23\00:01:06.70 we're gonna be in our Bibles 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.90 and our focus will be Psalm 51. 00:01:08.93\00:01:12.43 We're gonna tell the story, 00:01:12.47\00:01:14.04 read the story of sin and sincere repentance, 00:01:14.07\00:01:18.47 and the story of David 00:01:18.51\00:01:20.78 as he receives divine forgiveness. 00:01:20.81\00:01:23.95 But before you turn to Psalm 51, 00:01:23.98\00:01:25.81 let's have a prayer 00:01:25.85\00:01:27.18 'cause we're actually gonna start somewhere else. 00:01:27.22\00:01:29.28 So let's pray. 00:01:29.32\00:01:30.65 Heavenly Father, we come to You 00:01:30.69\00:01:32.49 in the name of Jesus, 00:01:32.52\00:01:33.86 thanking You for this time 00:01:33.89\00:01:36.62 to worship You in the word. 00:01:36.66\00:01:38.76 We thank You, Father, 00:01:38.79\00:01:40.26 for Your grace, we thank You, Father, 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.20 for the gifts of Jesus Christ, 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.63 Your Holy Spirit and Your Word. 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.34 And, Father, 00:01:47.37\00:01:48.70 I pray in the name of Jesus that forgive me 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.54 if am not surrendered right now. 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.21 I just wanna surrender to You 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.04 and I ask that You would speak 00:01:55.08\00:01:58.05 through Your scriptures as I present them tonight. 00:01:58.08\00:02:02.18 And just hide me behind the cross, 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.12 I pray in Jesus' name, amen. 00:02:04.15\00:02:07.29 Why don't we begin 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.56 by turning to 2 Samuel Chapter 11, 00:02:09.59\00:02:14.43 2 Samuel Chapter 11. 00:02:14.46\00:02:17.00 Now, I have to warn you 00:02:17.03\00:02:18.37 that I only had three hours sleep last night. 00:02:18.40\00:02:20.44 So if I fall asleep while I am talking, 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.97 you all just keep on listening, okay, is that a deal? 00:02:24.01\00:02:27.68 And we're going to start, 00:02:27.71\00:02:29.24 before we get to Psalm 51, 00:02:29.28\00:02:30.81 we wanna see the back story. 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.68 Many of you are familiar with this, 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.45 but I hope that as we go through the scripture 00:02:35.48\00:02:38.29 that God will really bring out some new nuggets of truth 00:02:38.32\00:02:42.32 that will bless us and as I said, 00:02:42.36\00:02:45.03 I prayed there were several ways 00:02:45.06\00:02:46.73 that I could have gone tonight but just this afternoon, 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.93 the Lord impressed me to share this information, 00:02:49.96\00:02:52.63 so there is somebody out there 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.64 that really needs to hear it. 00:02:54.67\00:02:56.50 So let's begin with 2 Samuel 11:1. 00:02:56.54\00:03:02.24 We are going to hear a story about a man 00:03:02.28\00:03:05.15 after God's own heart. 00:03:05.18\00:03:07.28 That's what God called David, didn't He? 00:03:07.32\00:03:09.75 And the scripture reads, 00:03:09.78\00:03:11.42 "It happened in the spring of the year..." 00:03:11.45\00:03:13.56 This was after the rainy season of winter. 00:03:13.59\00:03:16.86 "The spring of the year, 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.23 at the time when kings go out to battle, 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.86 that David sent Joab and his servants with him, 00:03:20.90\00:03:23.70 and all Israel, 00:03:23.73\00:03:25.07 and they destroyed the people of Ammon 00:03:25.10\00:03:27.10 and besieged Rabbah. 00:03:27.14\00:03:29.04 But David remained at Jerusalem." 00:03:29.07\00:03:32.77 Do you see a problem? 00:03:32.81\00:03:35.51 There is a problem here. 00:03:35.54\00:03:37.61 This is a time when kings should be going out to battle, 00:03:37.65\00:03:42.15 but David is at the height of his power right now. 00:03:42.18\00:03:46.72 All of his enemies have been subdued 00:03:46.76\00:03:49.62 except for this remnant of Ammonites. 00:03:49.66\00:03:53.06 And his treasuries, his coffers are overflowing, 00:03:53.09\00:03:56.97 and David is feeling very self-confident, 00:03:57.00\00:04:00.34 very self- reliant, and he shirks his duty as king. 00:04:00.37\00:04:04.14 He doesn't go out with his troops. 00:04:04.17\00:04:08.98 He has become apathetic. 00:04:09.01\00:04:11.81 And apathy is a very dangerous heart condition. 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.58 It's dangerous in our physical realm, 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.79 it's also dangerous in the spiritual realm. 00:04:17.82\00:04:20.76 Verse 2, "Then it happened one evening 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.56 that David arose from his bed 00:04:23.59\00:04:25.69 and walked on the roof of the king's house." 00:04:25.73\00:04:28.40 Now, he's walking where he shouldn't be walking. 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.90 Well, you say why? 00:04:30.93\00:04:32.27 I mean to walk on the roof, this was common. 00:04:32.30\00:04:34.77 I mean there's, there're flat top roofs 00:04:34.80\00:04:36.57 with gardens on them, 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.07 but he should have been in battle. 00:04:38.11\00:04:40.08 So he's somewhere 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.44 where he shouldn't be right now. 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.14 "And from the roof he saw a woman bathing 00:04:43.18\00:04:46.98 and the woman was very beautiful 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.55 to behold." 00:04:49.58\00:04:50.92 Now, unlike Job, do you remember what Job, 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.86 the covenant that Job said he made with his eyes. 00:04:54.89\00:04:59.03 Job said," I've made a covenant with my eyes 00:04:59.06\00:05:03.30 not to lust after a woman." 00:05:03.33\00:05:06.74 But unlike Job, 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.77 David is inflamed with lust 00:05:08.80\00:05:11.87 and he succumbs to the temptation. 00:05:11.91\00:05:15.11 He doesn't pray, get behind me Satan, 00:05:15.14\00:05:18.41 he doesn't pause to pray at all, 00:05:18.45\00:05:21.25 he just acts on the passions of his flesh 00:05:21.28\00:05:26.92 without thinking about God. 00:05:26.96\00:05:29.49 This is the man that God described 00:05:29.52\00:05:32.03 as a man after my own heart. 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.93 So now verse 3, 00:05:34.96\00:05:37.00 "David sent and inquired about the woman. 00:05:37.03\00:05:39.43 And someone said, 00:05:39.47\00:05:40.80 'Is this not Bathsheba, 00:05:40.84\00:05:42.44 the daughter of Eliam, 00:05:42.47\00:05:44.17 the wife of Uriah the Hittite?' 00:05:44.21\00:05:46.68 Then David sent messengers, 00:05:46.71\00:05:49.11 and he took her," or they took her. 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.75 Now this isn't an indication that they took her by force. 00:05:51.78\00:05:55.25 Actually if Bathsheba had resisted or said no, 00:05:55.28\00:06:00.16 she wouldn't have had to go 00:06:00.19\00:06:02.19 but, you know, she was a beautiful woman, 00:06:02.22\00:06:05.13 her husband had been gone to battle for a long time. 00:06:05.16\00:06:08.46 Maybe she felt a little bit flattered 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.30 by the king's attentions. 00:06:11.33\00:06:13.23 Maybe she thought she could have a night 00:06:13.27\00:06:16.07 of innocent flirtation with the king. 00:06:16.10\00:06:19.11 But let me tell you something, 00:06:19.14\00:06:20.48 there is no such thing as innocent flirtation. 00:06:20.51\00:06:25.45 So this is a toxic combination, 00:06:25.48\00:06:28.68 temptation and flirtation. 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.89 "She came to him, 00:06:30.92\00:06:32.62 and he lay with her, 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.29 for she was cleansed from her impurity, 00:06:34.32\00:06:36.32 and she returned to her house. 00:06:36.36\00:06:39.83 And the woman," what? 00:06:39.86\00:06:43.60 "She conceived." 00:06:43.63\00:06:45.80 This is the game changer. 00:06:45.83\00:06:48.20 There are always, please hear me, 00:06:48.24\00:06:50.91 there are always consequences to sin. 00:06:50.94\00:06:54.64 "So she sent and told David, and said, 'I am with child.' 00:06:54.68\00:06:59.95 Then David sent to Joab, 00:06:59.98\00:07:01.65 his captain saying, 'Send me Uriah the Hittite.'" 00:07:01.68\00:07:05.62 Uriah is Bathsheba's husband. 00:07:05.65\00:07:08.06 "Joab sent Uriah to David 00:07:08.09\00:07:09.82 and when Uriah had come to him, 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.19 David asked how Joab was doing, 00:07:11.23\00:07:13.19 and how the people were doing, 00:07:13.23\00:07:15.13 and how the war prospered." 00:07:15.16\00:07:17.07 David's buttering up Uriah right now. 00:07:17.10\00:07:21.10 "David said to Uriah, 'Go down to your house 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.81 and wash your feet.'" 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.17 What does that mean? 00:07:25.21\00:07:26.54 They washed their feet 00:07:26.57\00:07:27.91 before they entered into their home. 00:07:27.94\00:07:29.28 So he's sending him home. 00:07:29.31\00:07:31.15 David's thinking, he is trying to cover his sin. 00:07:31.18\00:07:35.22 So he's sending Uriah home 00:07:35.25\00:07:37.85 hoping that Uriah, 00:07:37.89\00:07:40.16 who's been to battle will lay with his beautiful wife 00:07:40.19\00:07:43.93 and when the baby comes along, 00:07:43.96\00:07:45.69 no one will know it's David's. 00:07:45.73\00:07:47.96 But Uriah slept at the door... 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.70 Oh, let me read this. 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.87 "'Go and wash your feet,' 00:07:52.90\00:07:54.24 So Uriah departed from the king's house, 00:07:54.27\00:07:56.94 and a gift of food from the king followed him." 00:07:56.97\00:08:00.71 David wanted this to be some feast 00:08:00.74\00:08:02.91 at their home. 00:08:02.94\00:08:04.41 Verse 9," But Uriah slept at the door 00:08:04.45\00:08:06.82 of the king's house 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.18 with all the servants of his lord, 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.29 and did not go down to his house." 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.79 Uriah was a faithful and loyal soldier, 00:08:13.82\00:08:19.09 and he felt it was wrong 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.40 to go and to sleep with his wife 00:08:21.43\00:08:23.73 when all the rest of the troops 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.70 are still out at war. 00:08:25.73\00:08:28.07 So, verse 11," Uriah said to David..." 00:08:28.10\00:08:32.47 Let me back up, verse 10, 00:08:32.51\00:08:34.31 "So when they told David, saying, 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.68 'Uriah did not go down to his house,' 00:08:36.71\00:08:39.28 David said to Uriah, 00:08:39.31\00:08:41.12 'Did you not come from a journey? 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.15 Why did you not go down to your house?' 00:08:43.18\00:08:45.42 And Uriah said to David, 00:08:45.45\00:08:47.42 'The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, 00:08:47.46\00:08:51.39 and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.90 are encamped in the open fields. 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.70 Shall I then go to my house 00:08:55.73\00:08:57.83 to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? 00:08:57.87\00:09:00.64 As you live, and as your soul lives, 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.10 I will not do this thing.' 00:09:03.14\00:09:06.27 Then David said to Uriah, 00:09:06.31\00:09:08.61 'Wait here today also, 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.45 and tomorrow I will let you depart.' 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.95 So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day 00:09:12.98\00:09:15.48 and the next.'" 00:09:15.52\00:09:16.85 Now when David called him again, 00:09:16.89\00:09:19.72 verse 13," He ate and drank before him, 00:09:19.75\00:09:24.03 and he made him drunk." 00:09:24.06\00:09:27.46 David thought, okay, this man's got high morals, 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.00 he's got high standards 00:09:31.03\00:09:32.77 but you know what liquor does to morals and standards, 00:09:32.80\00:09:36.87 it kind of loosens people up. 00:09:36.91\00:09:38.94 He thinks, if I can get him drunk, 00:09:38.97\00:09:40.34 he'll go lay with his wife. 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.01 "And at evening 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.51 Uriah went out to lie on his bed 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.75 with the servants of his lord, 00:09:45.78\00:09:47.52 but he did not go down to his house." 00:09:47.55\00:09:53.15 Do you see what's happening here? 00:09:53.19\00:09:55.62 Guilt and pride are causing David 00:09:55.66\00:10:00.20 to up the ante, 00:10:00.23\00:10:01.56 to increase his efforts, 00:10:01.60\00:10:03.23 to cover his sin 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.43 and you know, this is what happens 00:10:05.47\00:10:07.00 with so many people. 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.57 You start off telling a little lie to cover a sin 00:10:08.60\00:10:11.47 which becomes a bigger lie. 00:10:11.51\00:10:13.24 We see that so many people go down this path. 00:10:13.27\00:10:16.61 There was no remorse in David's heart. 00:10:16.64\00:10:18.88 He wasn't thinking about the Lord 00:10:18.91\00:10:20.82 and, "In the morning it happened 00:10:20.85\00:10:22.68 that David wrote a letter to Joab 00:10:22.72\00:10:25.75 and he sent it by the hand of Uriah." 00:10:25.79\00:10:30.83 Uriah did not know 00:10:30.86\00:10:33.80 that he was carrying his own death decree. 00:10:33.83\00:10:39.50 What David wrote in the letter, saying, 00:10:39.53\00:10:43.00 "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, 00:10:43.04\00:10:47.88 then retreat from him, 00:10:47.91\00:10:49.94 that he may be struck down and die." 00:10:49.98\00:10:54.78 Can you imagine, here is faithful Uriah 00:10:54.82\00:10:58.39 carrying the letter to the Captain Joab 00:10:58.42\00:11:02.09 and David has planned his death. 00:11:02.12\00:11:06.93 Said, put him out there in the front of the battle, 00:11:06.96\00:11:08.83 then you all retreat 00:11:08.86\00:11:10.20 and leave him there 00:11:10.23\00:11:11.57 so that he will be struck down and die. 00:11:11.60\00:11:13.97 Mercy. 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.74 In the morning, verse 14, it happened, 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.11 excuse me, verse 17, 00:11:20.14\00:11:21.71 then the men of the, 16, thank you, 00:11:21.74\00:11:24.38 I am so glad somebody I talked to aren't sleepy. 00:11:24.41\00:11:27.18 So it was verse 16, 00:11:27.22\00:11:29.58 "While Joab besieged the city, 00:11:29.62\00:11:31.82 that he assigned Uriah to a place 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.42 where he knew there were valiant men. 00:11:34.46\00:11:37.76 Than the men of the city came out 00:11:37.79\00:11:39.19 and fought with Joab. 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.60 And some of the people of the servants of David fell 00:11:40.63\00:11:43.70 and Uriah the Hittite died also." 00:11:43.73\00:11:48.10 Wow, what a story, 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.77 a man after God's own heart. 00:11:50.81\00:11:54.71 Do we see 00:11:54.74\00:11:56.38 how Satan will set a trap for our feet 00:11:56.41\00:11:59.11 and take us lower and lower and lower. 00:11:59.15\00:12:03.85 But now, God, in his mercy, 00:12:03.89\00:12:05.99 sends Nathan, the prophet, to sound the alarm. 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.59 Let's look at 2 Samuel Chapter 12, 00:12:09.62\00:12:13.50 and we'll begin with verse 1, 00:12:13.53\00:12:16.43 So God, sends the prophet Nathan to David. 00:12:16.46\00:12:21.80 And he came to him, and said to him, 00:12:21.84\00:12:26.07 this is Nathan speaking, 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.34 he's gonna tell story. 00:12:28.38\00:12:30.71 King David, 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.08 "There were two men in one city, 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.18 one rich and the other poor. 00:12:34.22\00:12:36.85 The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. 00:12:36.89\00:12:40.99 But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb 00:12:41.02\00:12:45.63 which he had bought and nourished, 00:12:45.66\00:12:48.46 and it grew up together with him 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.57 and with his children. 00:12:50.60\00:12:52.10 They would actually have the lamb 00:12:52.13\00:12:54.30 In the house with them. 00:12:54.34\00:12:56.67 It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup 00:12:56.71\00:12:59.57 and lay in his bosom 00:12:59.61\00:13:01.68 and it was like a daughter to him. 00:13:01.71\00:13:04.08 Now a traveler came to the rich man," 00:13:04.11\00:13:07.85 some friends travelling by, 00:13:07.88\00:13:09.42 a merchant that's travelling by, 00:13:09.45\00:13:10.82 we don't know, 00:13:10.85\00:13:12.55 "who refused to take, 00:13:12.59\00:13:14.72 the rich man refused to take from his own flock 00:13:14.76\00:13:17.46 and from his own herd 00:13:17.49\00:13:18.83 to prepare one for the wayfaring man 00:13:18.86\00:13:21.13 who had come to him, 00:13:21.16\00:13:22.76 but he took the poor man's lamb 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.83 and prepared it for the man who had come to him." 00:13:25.87\00:13:31.81 This story that Nathan is telling is an illustration, 00:13:31.84\00:13:36.28 David had all these riches, he had the wives, 00:13:36.31\00:13:40.08 he had the concubines, 00:13:40.12\00:13:41.78 but Uriah the Hittite only had 00:13:41.82\00:13:45.62 the one dear woman in his life. 00:13:45.65\00:13:48.96 Now when David hears this, 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.63 I love this, this is so human. 00:13:50.66\00:13:54.26 Verse 5, "So David's anger 00:13:54.30\00:13:57.53 was greatly aroused against the man, 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.60 and he said to Nathan, 00:14:00.64\00:14:02.20 'As the Lord lives, 00:14:02.24\00:14:03.57 the man who has done this shall surely die! 00:14:03.61\00:14:07.58 And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, 00:14:07.61\00:14:09.94 because he did this thing 00:14:09.98\00:14:11.81 and because he had no pity.'" 00:14:11.85\00:14:14.32 He was enraged, 00:14:14.35\00:14:16.18 but he was also blinded to his own condition. 00:14:16.22\00:14:19.39 He did not know this story was being told about him. 00:14:19.42\00:14:23.53 He was quick to pass judgment, wasn't he? 00:14:23.56\00:14:27.13 He was ready to have this rich man 00:14:27.16\00:14:29.10 put to death. 00:14:29.13\00:14:30.73 Now look at verse 7, 00:14:30.77\00:14:32.77 "Then Nathan said to David, 00:14:32.80\00:14:36.71 'You are the man!'" 00:14:36.74\00:14:40.28 Can you imagine the abrupt reversal 00:14:40.31\00:14:42.58 of David's fury 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.38 when he hears Nathan say, 00:14:44.41\00:14:46.68 you are the man, 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.02 Now, he goes on, 00:14:49.05\00:14:52.39 continuing in verse 6, 00:14:52.42\00:14:54.52 this is what Nathan is saying, or verse 7, 00:14:54.56\00:14:57.03 this is what Nathan is saying, 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.43 "Thus says the Lord God of Israel..." 00:14:59.46\00:15:01.50 God had given him a message to deliver. 00:15:01.53\00:15:06.23 "Thus says the Lord God of Israel, 00:15:06.27\00:15:08.37 'I anointed you king over Israel, 00:15:08.40\00:15:11.01 I delivered you from the hand of Saul, 00:15:11.04\00:15:13.27 I gave you your master's house 00:15:13.31\00:15:15.08 and your master's wives into your keeping, 00:15:15.11\00:15:17.41 and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. 00:15:17.45\00:15:19.88 And if that had been too little, 00:15:19.91\00:15:22.95 I also would have given you much more!'" 00:15:22.98\00:15:26.42 "In other words, 00:15:26.45\00:15:27.79 David, you found favor in my eyes. 00:15:27.82\00:15:30.03 I gave you everything you could want 00:15:30.06\00:15:31.93 and anything you had asked me for, 00:15:31.96\00:15:34.13 I would have given it to you. 00:15:34.16\00:15:37.07 Then verse 9, 00:15:37.10\00:15:38.53 God is still speaking, 00:15:38.57\00:15:40.34 "Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, 00:15:40.37\00:15:43.71 to do this evil in His sight? 00:15:43.74\00:15:46.57 You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, 00:15:46.61\00:15:50.01 you have taken his wife to be your wife, 00:15:50.05\00:15:52.11 and have killed him with the sword 00:15:52.15\00:15:53.58 of the people of Ammon. 00:15:53.62\00:15:55.18 Now therefore," 00:15:55.22\00:15:57.59 there's always consequences to sin, 00:15:57.62\00:16:00.92 "the sword shall never depart from your house, 00:16:00.96\00:16:02.89 because you have despised Me, 00:16:02.92\00:16:04.76 and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite 00:16:04.79\00:16:08.16 to be your wife. 00:16:08.20\00:16:09.86 Thus says the Lord: 'Behold, 00:16:09.90\00:16:11.50 I will raise up adversity against you 00:16:11.53\00:16:13.90 from your own house 00:16:13.94\00:16:15.64 and I will take your wives before your eyes 00:16:15.67\00:16:19.54 and give them to your neighbor, 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.28 and he shall lie with your wives` 00:16:21.31\00:16:23.28 in the sight of this sun. 00:16:23.31\00:16:25.31 For you did it secretly, 00:16:25.35\00:16:27.28 but I will do this thing before all Israel, 00:16:27.32\00:16:30.72 before the sun, the S-U-N.'" 00:16:30.75\00:16:33.46 Verse 13, now, 00:16:33.49\00:16:37.09 let me stop here and say this. 00:16:37.13\00:16:39.59 Wasn't Nathan bold to go before the king 00:16:39.63\00:16:44.27 and deliver this message that God sent. 00:16:44.30\00:16:47.00 A hotheaded king could have said, 00:16:47.04\00:16:49.24 "Off with your head." 00:16:49.27\00:16:50.71 Nathan could have lost his life, 00:16:50.74\00:16:55.08 but what happened was David's eyes 00:16:55.11\00:16:59.11 were opened to his lawlessness 00:16:59.15\00:17:01.68 and look what he says, 00:17:01.72\00:17:04.09 verse 13, "David said to Nathan, 00:17:04.12\00:17:08.22 'I have sinned against the Lord.'" 00:17:08.26\00:17:12.83 He recognized his sin. 00:17:12.86\00:17:15.16 He was seized by remorse. 00:17:15.20\00:17:18.37 He's confessing his sin against God 00:17:18.40\00:17:20.87 and we're gonna see how he repented 00:17:20.90\00:17:23.00 because his repentance 00:17:23.04\00:17:24.91 from this is written in Psalm 51. 00:17:24.94\00:17:28.68 "Now Nathan said to David, 00:17:28.71\00:17:30.91 'The Lord has also put away your sin, 00:17:30.95\00:17:33.05 you shall not die.'" 00:17:33.08\00:17:34.78 You see, David's sin was so severe. 00:17:34.82\00:17:39.02 There were no sacrifices 00:17:39.05\00:17:42.09 that could be made for his sin. 00:17:42.12\00:17:44.36 Premeditated murder, 00:17:44.39\00:17:47.30 the result 00:17:47.33\00:17:49.30 or the punishment was death. 00:17:49.33\00:17:52.93 Adultery, 00:17:52.97\00:17:54.34 these were called high hand sins. 00:17:54.37\00:17:59.61 They were sins of defiance 00:17:59.64\00:18:02.04 and they had to be cut off from the community 00:18:02.08\00:18:06.31 and often even adultery ended in the penalty of death. 00:18:06.51\00:18:11.22 Now, the last verse14, 00:18:11.25\00:18:15.62 "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion 00:18:15.66\00:18:19.69 to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme..." 00:18:19.73\00:18:22.80 Did you get that? 00:18:22.83\00:18:24.30 David gave occasion to God's enemies 00:18:24.33\00:18:28.40 to blaspheme the name of God. 00:18:28.44\00:18:31.07 As a Christian, when we're out, 00:18:31.11\00:18:33.78 if we do something that is unchrist like, 00:18:33.81\00:18:39.01 unlovely, if we openly sin in front of someone, 00:18:39.05\00:18:43.92 we are giving people the opportunity 00:18:43.95\00:18:47.72 to blaspheme God's name. 00:18:47.76\00:18:51.29 So now, we're gonna follow the story, 00:18:51.33\00:18:53.80 here's what's happened, 00:18:53.83\00:18:55.63 but the reason God did not kill David 00:18:55.66\00:18:59.23 is because David was seized by sincere remorse 00:18:59.27\00:19:04.21 and he repented. 00:19:04.24\00:19:06.68 I'm gonna say this quickly and we'll see it in Psalm 51. 00:19:06.71\00:19:10.41 There are five steps to repentance. 00:19:10.45\00:19:13.35 There's recognition of sin, 00:19:13.38\00:19:15.42 there's godly sorrow, 00:19:15.45\00:19:17.89 confession of sin, 00:19:17.92\00:19:19.95 but then you must receive God's forgiveness 00:19:19.99\00:19:24.09 and change your behavior, change your conduct. 00:19:24.13\00:19:27.03 So now, that's the back-story, 00:19:27.06\00:19:29.70 let's get into Psalm 51 00:19:29.73\00:19:33.00 because that is our study tonight. 00:19:33.03\00:19:35.57 And this has the historical background 00:19:35.60\00:19:39.61 of the story that we just read 00:19:39.64\00:19:41.28 because this is the record of David's repentance 00:19:41.31\00:19:45.48 after Nathan said, "You're the man". 00:19:45.51\00:19:48.25 Psalm 51:1, "To the Chief Musician. 00:19:48.28\00:19:52.95 A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, 00:19:52.99\00:19:56.66 after he had gone in to Bathsheba." 00:19:56.69\00:19:59.89 Now these are David's words, 00:19:59.93\00:20:01.70 "Have mercy upon me, O God, 00:20:01.73\00:20:05.10 according to Your loving kindness, 00:20:05.13\00:20:07.97 according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, 00:20:08.00\00:20:11.87 blot out my transgressions." 00:20:11.91\00:20:15.04 Blot them out from where? 00:20:15.08\00:20:17.18 From the heavenly record book 00:20:17.21\00:20:19.01 where the record of our sins are kept. 00:20:19.05\00:20:23.35 You know what I love about Psalm 51, 00:20:23.39\00:20:25.52 this is, if you wanna learn how to repent 00:20:25.55\00:20:28.12 and you don't know how to, 00:20:28.16\00:20:29.52 even confess your sin before God, 00:20:29.56\00:20:31.66 just pray Psalm 51. 00:20:31.69\00:20:34.16 This is so amazing. 00:20:34.20\00:20:35.66 David, look at the words he's saying about God. 00:20:35.70\00:20:39.07 He's appealing to, he recognizes his sin. 00:20:39.10\00:20:43.51 I mean, this is true humility here. 00:20:43.54\00:20:45.91 He's not trying to blame somebody else. 00:20:45.94\00:20:48.34 He's not saying, oh Lord, 00:20:48.38\00:20:50.68 that beautiful woman was over there naked. 00:20:50.71\00:20:52.71 If she hadn't been there, I wouldn't have done that. 00:20:52.75\00:20:54.98 If she hadn't been bathing on her rooftop. 00:20:55.02\00:20:57.42 He doesn't try to blame anyone. 00:20:57.45\00:20:59.29 He accepts the guilt for his sin 00:20:59.32\00:21:02.59 and he recognizes his sin. 00:21:02.62\00:21:04.69 That's the first step of repentance. 00:21:04.73\00:21:07.80 His heart feels crushed 00:21:07.83\00:21:10.17 by the weight of his guilt 00:21:10.20\00:21:12.10 and he makes this heartbroken plea to God, 00:21:12.13\00:21:15.64 but he's pleading for God's mercy 00:21:15.67\00:21:18.01 but look at the words here. 00:21:18.04\00:21:20.18 He's relying completely on God's love. 00:21:20.21\00:21:23.55 Have mercy on me oh, God, 00:21:23.58\00:21:25.11 according to your loving kindness, 00:21:25.15\00:21:27.32 according to the multitude of your tender mercies, 00:21:27.35\00:21:32.05 blot out my transgression. 00:21:32.09\00:21:34.96 Verse 2, "Wash me thoroughly," 00:21:34.99\00:21:39.16 now the literal translation of this 00:21:39.19\00:21:42.20 is multiply to wash me. 00:21:42.23\00:21:45.33 He's saying, wash me thoroughly and repeatedly, 00:21:45.37\00:21:48.00 wash me as many times as it takes Lord. 00:21:48.04\00:21:51.67 "Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, 00:21:51.71\00:21:54.68 and cleanse me from my sin." 00:21:54.71\00:21:57.51 These words blot out, 00:21:57.55\00:22:00.02 wash away and cleanse 00:22:00.05\00:22:03.02 are all terms for forgiveness. 00:22:03.05\00:22:06.19 Verse 3, David prays, 00:22:06.22\00:22:08.29 "For I acknowledge my transgressions 00:22:08.32\00:22:11.33 and my sin is always before me." 00:22:11.36\00:22:14.30 Here we see Godly sorrow 00:22:14.33\00:22:16.30 that second step of true repentance 00:22:16.33\00:22:19.40 and we see confession, the third step. 00:22:19.43\00:22:22.70 David is confessing 00:22:22.74\00:22:24.71 how he rebelled against God. 00:22:24.74\00:22:27.71 Now look at verse 4, 00:22:27.74\00:22:29.64 "Against You, 00:22:29.68\00:22:32.01 and You only, have I sinned." 00:22:32.05\00:22:35.08 Oh, wait a minute, 00:22:35.12\00:22:36.48 he committed adultery with Bathsheba, 00:22:36.52\00:22:39.75 he was the instigator, 00:22:39.79\00:22:41.96 he committed murder. 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.76 What does he mean against You 00:22:43.79\00:22:45.93 and You only have I sinned? 00:22:45.96\00:22:48.10 He doesn't mean that the affects of sin, 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.63 of his sin haven't hurt someone else, 00:22:50.67\00:22:53.37 but the bottom line is this, all sin... 00:22:53.40\00:22:57.11 Listen to what I am saying, 00:22:57.14\00:22:58.77 all sin is ultimately against God, 00:22:58.81\00:23:03.08 and David is recognizing that. 00:23:03.11\00:23:05.61 "Against You, You only, have I sinned, 00:23:05.65\00:23:09.55 and I've done this evil in Your sight 00:23:09.58\00:23:11.89 that You may be found just when You speak, 00:23:11.92\00:23:16.86 and blameless when You judge." 00:23:16.89\00:23:20.20 You see, when God condemns sin, 00:23:20.23\00:23:24.10 he is executing justice, 00:23:24.13\00:23:29.07 and David acknowledge 00:23:29.10\00:23:31.11 that God was blameless in judging him. 00:23:31.14\00:23:36.08 Now verse 5, 00:23:36.11\00:23:37.91 "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, 00:23:37.95\00:23:42.52 and in sin my mother conceived me." 00:23:42.55\00:23:45.75 Now this is, 00:23:45.79\00:23:50.16 there's no record that his mother 00:23:50.19\00:23:52.73 had committed adultery or done anything like this. 00:23:52.76\00:23:55.76 I think he's kind of overstating this. 00:23:55.80\00:23:58.43 He's recognizing his sin tainted condition at birth. 00:23:58.47\00:24:03.47 We're all born with a fallen nature, 00:24:03.51\00:24:05.54 aren't we? 00:24:05.57\00:24:06.91 We have that propensity towards sin 00:24:06.94\00:24:10.18 but the interesting thing is, 00:24:10.21\00:24:12.91 David is not going to use this 00:24:12.95\00:24:16.38 as an excuse for his actions. 00:24:16.42\00:24:19.32 He is only using it 00:24:19.35\00:24:21.66 as his recognition 00:24:21.69\00:24:25.63 of his total dependence upon God 00:24:25.66\00:24:28.26 and his desperate need for God's mercy. 00:24:28.30\00:24:32.73 Verse 6, 00:24:32.77\00:24:34.60 "Behold, David says, 00:24:34.64\00:24:37.07 You, Lord, desire truth in the inward parts, 00:24:37.11\00:24:42.24 and in the hidden part 00:24:42.28\00:24:44.38 You will make me to know wisdom." 00:24:44.41\00:24:49.28 God desires that we obey Him 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.85 with a heart of integrity. 00:24:52.89\00:24:55.76 We're not obeying Him 00:24:55.79\00:24:57.53 just because we've got to obey. 00:24:57.56\00:25:00.40 We're obeying God because we love Him. 00:25:00.43\00:25:04.93 We're obeying God being faithful 00:25:04.97\00:25:07.30 and we're being, 00:25:07.34\00:25:08.67 we have that heart of integrity. 00:25:08.70\00:25:10.71 And David here recognizes 00:25:10.74\00:25:14.41 that God is our source of wisdom 00:25:14.44\00:25:17.85 and what we must do 00:25:17.88\00:25:20.35 is allow God to communicate that wisdom, 00:25:20.38\00:25:24.29 that heavenly wisdom to our hearts. 00:25:24.32\00:25:26.86 Remember what James said, there's two kinds of wisdom, 00:25:26.89\00:25:30.66 there's heavenly wisdom 00:25:30.69\00:25:32.06 and then there is the earthly devilish wisdom, 00:25:32.09\00:25:35.40 but we've got to allow God 00:25:35.43\00:25:37.57 to communicate that to our hearts. 00:25:37.60\00:25:40.50 Verse 7, 00:25:40.54\00:25:42.74 David prays, "Purge me..." 00:25:42.77\00:25:46.31 Make an atonement for my sin, he's saying, 00:25:46.34\00:25:48.51 "Purge me with hyssop..." 00:25:48.54\00:25:51.58 Now, stalks of hyssop 00:25:51.61\00:25:54.25 have many little bunches of white flowers 00:25:54.28\00:25:59.72 and do you remember 00:25:59.75\00:26:01.66 where we first introduced in the Bible to hyssop. 00:26:01.69\00:26:04.76 At least I think it's our first introduction, 00:26:04.79\00:26:07.50 do you remember? 00:26:07.53\00:26:09.46 Hyssop was the brush that they used 00:26:09.50\00:26:12.60 on the first Passover that night 00:26:12.63\00:26:14.90 when they slayed the Paschal Lamb 00:26:14.94\00:26:19.94 and when God told them to... 00:26:19.97\00:26:22.51 When the angel of death was about to come over 00:26:22.54\00:26:24.75 and God told them to dip the hyssop 00:26:24.78\00:26:27.88 into the blood 00:26:27.92\00:26:29.25 and to mark their lintels, 00:26:29.28\00:26:31.52 and anywhere the blood of the sacrifice 00:26:31.55\00:26:33.96 was on the door, 00:26:33.99\00:26:35.32 the angel of death would pass over. 00:26:35.36\00:26:38.33 That's where we get the name Passover. 00:26:38.36\00:26:41.36 So what David is saying here, 00:26:41.40\00:26:44.90 you know, under the Levitical law, 00:26:44.93\00:26:46.94 hyssop was used in cleansing rituals, 00:26:46.97\00:26:50.04 going back to that first Passover. 00:26:50.07\00:26:54.28 This was God's way of teaching us 00:26:54.31\00:26:56.54 that it is the blood of the lamb, 00:26:56.58\00:26:59.18 the blood as Jesus died for our sins, 00:26:59.21\00:27:03.08 sacrificed on the cross. 00:27:03.12\00:27:05.09 It is by His blood that we're purged of sin 00:27:05.12\00:27:09.19 but please remember, 00:27:09.22\00:27:10.83 we have to personally apply that to our lives. 00:27:10.86\00:27:14.43 We have to receive Christ 00:27:14.46\00:27:16.70 not only as Savior, but as our Lord. 00:27:16.73\00:27:19.43 So he says, "Purge me with hyssop 00:27:19.47\00:27:23.14 and I shall be clean. 00:27:23.17\00:27:26.17 Wash me, 00:27:26.21\00:27:27.78 and I shall be whiter than snow." 00:27:27.81\00:27:31.38 Verse 8, "Make me hear joy and gladness." 00:27:31.41\00:27:36.18 He was longing to hear the Lord's sweet voice 00:27:36.22\00:27:39.72 tell him he is forgiven. 00:27:39.75\00:27:41.89 "Make me hear joy and gladness 00:27:41.92\00:27:43.69 that the bones You have broken may rejoice." 00:27:43.73\00:27:47.50 Now that terminology, bones, you've broken bone, 00:27:47.53\00:27:52.10 anytime there was suffering, in the Old Testament 00:27:52.13\00:27:56.34 they often used that word, the bones. 00:27:56.37\00:27:59.17 So, I love verse 9, 00:27:59.21\00:28:03.24 he says, "Hide Your face from my sins..." 00:28:03.28\00:28:09.05 This implies more than just forgiving, 00:28:09.08\00:28:13.46 this implies God forgetting his sin." 00:28:13.49\00:28:18.56 Hide your face from my sins 00:28:18.59\00:28:21.06 and blot out all my iniquities." 00:28:21.10\00:28:24.47 Again, another plea, 00:28:24.50\00:28:26.47 that his sins will be erased 00:28:26.50\00:28:29.94 from the record book. 00:28:29.97\00:28:33.41 Verse 10, "Create in me a clean heart, 00:28:33.44\00:28:37.71 O God." 00:28:37.75\00:28:39.31 Don't we all need to pray that? 00:28:39.35\00:28:41.52 Oh, create in me a clean heart. 00:28:41.55\00:28:45.15 See, the renewal of the heart 00:28:45.19\00:28:47.92 doesn't just represent forgiveness, 00:28:47.96\00:28:51.79 it represents a change, 00:28:51.83\00:28:54.60 it represents being empowered 00:28:54.63\00:28:58.50 to live in obedience to God's command. 00:28:58.53\00:29:02.60 In the process of forgiveness, 00:29:02.64\00:29:04.57 God does not merely cleanse our record, 00:29:04.61\00:29:07.64 cleanse our heart, 00:29:07.68\00:29:09.34 but He performs the act of a heart renewal 00:29:09.38\00:29:13.62 and sanctification. 00:29:13.65\00:29:15.68 So he says, "Create in me a clean heart, O God 00:29:15.72\00:29:19.05 and renew a steadfast spirit in me." 00:29:19.09\00:29:23.26 What does it mean to have a steadfast spirit? 00:29:23.29\00:29:26.76 It means we'll be steadfast in faith, 00:29:26.80\00:29:29.63 constant in obedience, 00:29:29.66\00:29:31.90 ready to change our conduct, 00:29:31.93\00:29:35.20 but recognizing our absolute total dependence 00:29:35.24\00:29:39.21 from God to do so. 00:29:39.24\00:29:42.24 You know, we also have to recognize 00:29:42.28\00:29:45.31 that repentance is a gift. 00:29:45.35\00:29:48.98 Did you know that? 00:29:49.02\00:29:50.65 Acts 5:31 says that 00:29:50.69\00:29:53.89 He, Jesus, 00:29:53.92\00:29:55.32 God exalted to be Lord and prince 00:29:55.36\00:29:59.06 that He might grant forgiveness, 00:29:59.09\00:30:02.53 that He may give forgiveness. 00:30:02.56\00:30:06.27 If you will understand 00:30:06.30\00:30:09.10 that we need to not only ask for forgiveness, 00:30:09.14\00:30:13.54 we need to pray that God will grant to us, 00:30:13.58\00:30:18.18 repentance. 00:30:18.21\00:30:19.98 I believe that's my purse that's ringing. 00:30:20.02\00:30:23.49 This happened one time on live as well, 00:30:23.52\00:30:25.72 I thought I turned that off. 00:30:25.75\00:30:28.46 So now, in Psalm 51:11, 00:30:28.49\00:30:31.79 he's prayed for a clean heart. 00:30:31.83\00:30:34.63 He's prayed that God will renew a steadfast spirit. 00:30:34.66\00:30:39.43 Now what he prays in verse 11 is, 00:30:39.47\00:30:43.00 do not cast me away from your presence. 00:30:43.04\00:30:47.68 You know, David was a man 00:30:47.71\00:30:49.54 who knew the true joy of being in God's presence. 00:30:49.58\00:30:54.35 He knew that that's the only place 00:30:54.38\00:30:56.35 you find true joy is being in God's presence. 00:30:56.38\00:30:59.55 He says, "Do not cast me away from Your presence 00:30:59.59\00:31:03.63 and do not take Your Holy Spirit 00:31:03.66\00:31:08.16 from me." 00:31:08.20\00:31:10.13 In the New Testament, 00:31:10.17\00:31:11.83 there's a number of sins that are listed, 00:31:11.87\00:31:14.54 that how we can sin against the Holy Spirit. 00:31:14.57\00:31:19.24 We can resist the Spirit of God, 00:31:19.27\00:31:22.51 we can grieve the Holy Spirit of God, 00:31:22.54\00:31:26.48 and we can quench the Holy Spirit of God, 00:31:26.51\00:31:30.55 and they kind of lead, 00:31:30.59\00:31:32.59 you resist, 00:31:32.62\00:31:34.66 you grieve him, and then you begin... 00:31:34.69\00:31:36.96 If you grieve him long enough, you can actually quench. 00:31:36.99\00:31:40.20 David recognized his great need for the Holy Spirit of God. 00:31:40.23\00:31:45.80 Only the Holy Spirit 00:31:45.83\00:31:48.60 can deliver us from the power of sin. 00:31:48.64\00:31:52.07 Only the Holy Spirit can give us victory. 00:31:52.11\00:31:55.88 So he's saying, 00:31:55.91\00:31:57.25 don't take your Holy Spirit away from me. 00:31:57.28\00:32:00.62 I need his guidance, I need his power. 00:32:00.65\00:32:04.55 Now, verse 12, he says, 00:32:04.59\00:32:07.56 "Restore to me 00:32:07.59\00:32:09.82 the joy of Your salvation, 00:32:09.86\00:32:12.89 and uphold me by Your generous Spirit." 00:32:12.93\00:32:17.70 He is longing for the joy of the Lord 00:32:17.73\00:32:20.30 that he experienced before his great sin. 00:32:20.34\00:32:24.37 Do you remember the joy of salvation 00:32:24.41\00:32:27.84 that you felt when you first accepted Christ 00:32:27.88\00:32:31.05 as your Savior? 00:32:31.08\00:32:32.65 Do you remember that? 00:32:32.68\00:32:34.02 Do you remember how excited you were to know 00:32:34.05\00:32:37.85 that you've been washed and cleansed, 00:32:37.89\00:32:39.72 to know that Jesus was your Lord? 00:32:39.75\00:32:42.46 I mean, I can remember it so clearly, 00:32:42.49\00:32:45.33 I was walking on cloud nine. 00:32:45.36\00:32:48.00 And you know, 00:32:48.03\00:32:49.36 sometimes it's kind of like a honeymoon phase, 00:32:49.40\00:32:53.13 I guess you could say. 00:32:53.17\00:32:54.84 You know, when you, I love JD with all of my heart 00:32:54.87\00:32:58.07 and I can remember feeling that way 00:32:58.11\00:33:00.71 and sometimes, 00:33:00.74\00:33:02.18 you just get so comfortable with each other, 00:33:02.21\00:33:04.61 it's not that same, you know, your stomach doesn't flip, 00:33:04.65\00:33:07.95 you don't get butterflies 00:33:07.98\00:33:10.15 but there's a beautiful thing 00:33:10.19\00:33:12.45 and there's a more, it's a much more intimate thing 00:33:12.49\00:33:15.92 but what can happen in a relationship, 00:33:15.96\00:33:20.23 is that you let it go 00:33:20.26\00:33:22.30 from that joy to just being comfortable, 00:33:22.33\00:33:27.30 to just being apathetic. 00:33:27.34\00:33:30.04 You can end up being married to someone 00:33:30.07\00:33:34.34 who becomes like your roommate, 00:33:34.38\00:33:39.01 you're two ships passing in the night. 00:33:39.05\00:33:41.38 There's no intimate conversation. 00:33:41.42\00:33:43.32 And this can happen 00:33:43.35\00:33:44.69 in our relationship with the Lord, 00:33:44.72\00:33:46.05 and I believe that's exactly what happened to David. 00:33:46.09\00:33:49.62 I believe when God said 00:33:49.66\00:33:51.69 he was a man after His own heart. 00:33:51.73\00:33:54.40 I believe that David loved God with all of his heart. 00:33:54.43\00:33:59.00 He had that joy of salvation. 00:33:59.03\00:34:01.77 But then, he got busy doing things 00:34:01.80\00:34:05.84 that kings do. 00:34:05.87\00:34:08.78 It didn't mean that he didn't, 00:34:08.81\00:34:10.28 I mean, God said he was a man after My own heart. 00:34:10.31\00:34:13.82 I keep saying that because it's such, you know, 00:34:13.85\00:34:17.22 the juxtaposition of that is amazing to me 00:34:17.25\00:34:20.26 that a man after God's heart 00:34:20.29\00:34:23.12 could then fall to the point of committing adultery 00:34:23.16\00:34:26.46 and murdering someone. 00:34:26.49\00:34:28.63 Amazing, 00:34:28.66\00:34:30.47 but that's where that apathy started settling in 00:34:30.50\00:34:34.60 and he began to be so comfortable with the Lord 00:34:34.64\00:34:38.67 that he began to kind of exclude God 00:34:38.71\00:34:43.65 from his life. 00:34:43.68\00:34:45.11 "Restore to me the joy of your salvation, 00:34:45.15\00:34:48.78 and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. 00:34:48.82\00:34:53.22 Verse 13, 00:34:53.25\00:34:54.59 "Then I will teach transgressors Your way, 00:34:54.62\00:34:59.46 and sinners shall be converted to You." 00:34:59.49\00:35:04.03 David's now making God a promise 00:35:04.07\00:35:06.77 that he'll go out, 00:35:06.80\00:35:08.64 just restore me, restore me, Lord, 00:35:08.67\00:35:11.01 and I'll go out and share the good news 00:35:11.04\00:35:13.31 of the gospel of grace. 00:35:13.34\00:35:14.81 I'll turn others away from evil 00:35:14.84\00:35:17.21 and back to you, Lord, 00:35:17.25\00:35:19.08 so that they can find mercy 00:35:19.11\00:35:21.48 and forgiveness and joy. 00:35:21.52\00:35:23.92 Verse 14, 00:35:23.95\00:35:25.92 "Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, 00:35:25.95\00:35:28.46 O God, the God of my salvation." 00:35:28.49\00:35:31.56 Ah, it's interesting, how's he addressing God? 00:35:31.59\00:35:35.16 The God of my salvation. 00:35:35.20\00:35:37.40 "Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed 00:35:37.43\00:35:39.97 and my tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness. 00:35:40.00\00:35:44.84 O Lord, open my lips, 00:35:44.87\00:35:47.14 and my mouth shall show forth Your praise." 00:35:47.18\00:35:51.75 The only way our lips can be opened to praise 00:35:51.78\00:35:56.08 is when we have a clear conscience. 00:35:56.12\00:35:59.42 If we don't have a clear conscience, 00:35:59.45\00:36:01.16 we're not running around praising the Lord. 00:36:01.19\00:36:03.69 And what David is saying here is, 00:36:03.73\00:36:06.13 Lord, if You will open my lips, 00:36:06.16\00:36:10.67 if you will deliver Me from this guilt 00:36:10.70\00:36:13.27 and open my lips, 00:36:13.30\00:36:15.00 my mouth will show forth Your praise. 00:36:15.04\00:36:18.07 Verse 16," 00:36:18.11\00:36:19.44 For You do not desire sacrifice, 00:36:19.47\00:36:21.81 or else I would give it. 00:36:21.84\00:36:23.38 You do not delight in burnt offering." 00:36:23.41\00:36:25.81 Now as I've already said, 00:36:25.85\00:36:27.98 there was no sacrifice for premeditated murder. 00:36:28.02\00:36:32.32 The penalty was death, but I think David 00:36:32.35\00:36:35.62 is kind of going a little further here. 00:36:35.66\00:36:38.29 I don't think he's just saying, 00:36:38.33\00:36:40.06 hey, there's nothing in the Levitical law 00:36:40.10\00:36:44.43 that I can do 00:36:44.47\00:36:45.80 because look what he says in the next verse, 00:36:45.83\00:36:50.11 verse 17, 00:36:50.14\00:36:51.67 "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, 00:36:51.71\00:36:56.81 a broken and a contrite heart, 00:36:56.85\00:37:00.45 these, O God, You will not despise." 00:37:00.48\00:37:04.72 See, this is what God approves. 00:37:04.75\00:37:08.42 He approves a heart 00:37:08.46\00:37:10.16 that recognizes its sin, 00:37:10.19\00:37:12.89 a heart that is sorrowful for its sin. 00:37:12.93\00:37:17.30 He approves someone 00:37:17.33\00:37:19.07 who is humbly willing to repent. 00:37:19.10\00:37:23.84 Then verse 18, 00:37:23.87\00:37:26.07 "Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion, 00:37:26.11\00:37:29.98 build the walls of Jerusalem." 00:37:30.01\00:37:33.58 In the middle of all of his repentance 00:37:33.62\00:37:37.29 and confession, 00:37:37.32\00:37:39.15 here he comes, do good in your good pleasure to Zion, 00:37:39.19\00:37:42.59 build the walls of Jerusalem. 00:37:42.62\00:37:44.83 What was he saying here? 00:37:44.86\00:37:46.59 See, Zion was the city of David's heart. 00:37:46.63\00:37:50.67 It was the sacred place 00:37:50.70\00:37:53.10 where God dwelled and David loved Zion 00:37:53.13\00:37:57.94 and it is very characteristic of David 00:37:57.97\00:38:00.84 if you read the Psalms, 00:38:00.88\00:38:02.34 to suddenly be interceding, 00:38:02.38\00:38:04.08 he includes prayers for others. 00:38:04.11\00:38:06.48 And now what he is asking here 00:38:06.51\00:38:09.28 is that God will not punish Zion, 00:38:09.32\00:38:13.66 that he will not punish Jerusalem, 00:38:13.69\00:38:16.69 the city for David's sin. 00:38:16.73\00:38:19.69 And when he says build the walls of Jerusalem, 00:38:19.73\00:38:22.56 that's probably a reference 00:38:22.60\00:38:23.93 to God blessing Zion with His favor. 00:38:23.97\00:38:28.44 And then the concluding verse, he says, 00:38:28.47\00:38:30.01 "Then You shall be pleased 00:38:30.04\00:38:31.67 with the sacrifices of righteousness, 00:38:31.71\00:38:34.54 those that are offered 00:38:34.58\00:38:35.91 with a sincere spirit and a proper motive, 00:38:35.94\00:38:38.65 with burnt offering and whole burnt offering, 00:38:38.68\00:38:40.92 then they shall offer bulls on Your altar." 00:38:40.95\00:38:46.32 Is that the end of the story? 00:38:46.35\00:38:48.62 No, 00:38:48.66\00:38:50.66 we followed the story from his sin 00:38:50.69\00:38:53.70 to when Nathan comes in 00:38:53.73\00:38:56.26 to tell him of his sin, 00:38:56.30\00:38:59.30 David repents, 00:38:59.33\00:39:00.67 Nathan says okay, you're not gonna die, 00:39:00.70\00:39:02.40 there's gonna be these other consequences 00:39:02.44\00:39:04.81 but you're not gonna die. 00:39:04.84\00:39:06.57 What is the end of this story? 00:39:06.61\00:39:09.78 Please turn in your Bibles 00:39:09.81\00:39:11.15 to 1 Kings 14:8. 00:39:11.18\00:39:17.85 This is where the story gets exciting to me. 00:39:17.89\00:39:22.92 It is exciting, 00:39:22.96\00:39:24.53 you will find this so exciting. 00:39:24.56\00:39:26.53 There are people out there who feel that you have sinned 00:39:26.56\00:39:29.53 in such a way 00:39:29.56\00:39:31.03 that God cannot forgive you 00:39:31.07\00:39:33.87 but I'll tell you what, 00:39:33.90\00:39:35.60 turn to Psalm 51, 00:39:35.64\00:39:37.64 pray that psalm, 00:39:37.67\00:39:39.51 oh, Lord, blood out my transgressions, 00:39:39.54\00:39:43.81 cleanse me thoroughly and repeatedly, 00:39:43.85\00:39:46.45 wash me thoroughly and repeatedly, 00:39:46.48\00:39:49.15 Lord renew a steadfast spirit in me. 00:39:49.18\00:39:52.12 You pray to the God of love, 00:39:52.15\00:39:55.29 you pray for God's mercy 00:39:55.32\00:39:57.76 and let me show you what God will do. 00:39:57.79\00:40:01.46 This is so exciting to me. 00:40:01.50\00:40:04.20 1 Kings 14:8, 00:40:04.23\00:40:07.60 let me set this up. 00:40:07.64\00:40:09.44 God has told the prophet Ahijah 00:40:09.47\00:40:13.64 to deliver a message to King Jeroboam. 00:40:13.68\00:40:17.45 He's prophesying 00:40:17.48\00:40:19.01 the destruction of Jeroboam's home, house, 00:40:19.05\00:40:22.35 the house, his kingdom. 00:40:22.38\00:40:26.55 And here's what God says 00:40:26.59\00:40:29.72 at 1 Kings 14:8, 00:40:29.76\00:40:34.06 the reason, basically he's saying, 00:40:34.10\00:40:36.16 the reason I'm gonna destroy your house 00:40:36.20\00:40:39.27 is because "You have not been 00:40:39.30\00:40:44.21 as My servant David 00:40:44.24\00:40:46.37 who kept My commandments 00:40:46.41\00:40:49.04 and who followed Me with all of his heart, 00:40:49.08\00:40:53.82 to do only what was right in My eyes." 00:40:53.85\00:40:58.69 See the king did not follow God 00:40:58.72\00:41:00.66 with all of his heart like David. 00:41:00.69\00:41:02.99 Whoa, whoa, whoa! 00:41:03.02\00:41:05.29 Wait a minute, 00:41:05.33\00:41:06.96 this is written after David's death. 00:41:07.00\00:41:11.30 This is a quote from God. 00:41:11.33\00:41:14.20 You have not been as my servant David, 00:41:14.24\00:41:18.14 who kept My commandments, 00:41:18.17\00:41:21.18 who followed Me with all of his heart 00:41:21.21\00:41:24.15 to do only what was right 00:41:24.18\00:41:28.18 in my eyes. 00:41:28.22\00:41:30.22 Why would God say this? 00:41:30.25\00:41:32.82 Why would He say it about someone 00:41:32.85\00:41:34.76 who had committed adultery? 00:41:34.79\00:41:36.96 Why would He say such words about someone 00:41:36.99\00:41:40.50 who was guilty of murder? 00:41:40.53\00:41:43.23 How could He say, 00:41:43.26\00:41:44.60 what did James say, you break one commandment, 00:41:44.63\00:41:47.57 you break them all. 00:41:47.60\00:41:48.94 The Ten Commandments are unit, 00:41:48.97\00:41:50.67 you break one, you break them all. 00:41:50.71\00:41:54.14 He was guilty of breaking them all 00:41:54.18\00:41:57.01 and God is saying, 00:41:57.05\00:41:58.38 he did only what was right in My eyes. 00:41:58.41\00:42:03.39 Huh, 00:42:03.42\00:42:05.95 you want me to tell you what it is? 00:42:05.99\00:42:09.29 God forgets 00:42:09.32\00:42:12.43 what we ask Him to forgive. 00:42:12.46\00:42:15.56 Oh, let me repeat that. 00:42:15.60\00:42:17.27 If you are sitting at home, 00:42:17.30\00:42:19.00 and maybe you have confessed a sin 00:42:19.03\00:42:21.30 over and over. 00:42:21.34\00:42:22.67 I had a little lady call me 00:42:22.70\00:42:24.61 a couple of years back. 00:42:24.64\00:42:26.64 She was in her 80s 00:42:26.68\00:42:29.24 and she called me weeping, 00:42:29.28\00:42:32.25 saying, I had an abortion. 00:42:32.28\00:42:35.72 I went to Mexico and had an abortion 00:42:35.75\00:42:38.55 when I was 17 years old. 00:42:38.59\00:42:41.16 She said, I was a pastor's daughter, 00:42:41.19\00:42:43.63 my parents sent me to Mexico, 00:42:43.66\00:42:46.53 they didn't want anyone to know and she said, 00:42:46.56\00:42:49.33 "I am guilty of murder," and she said, "Oh, 00:42:49.36\00:42:51.37 I prayed over and over and over to be forgiven." 00:42:51.40\00:42:55.40 See, we get this in our mind. 00:42:55.44\00:43:00.68 Somehow we let our judgment overrule 00:43:00.71\00:43:04.65 what the Bible says about God. 00:43:04.68\00:43:07.02 The Bible clearly, this implies, 00:43:07.05\00:43:09.68 God forgets what we ask Him to forgive. 00:43:09.72\00:43:13.79 You can let go of that burden, 00:43:13.82\00:43:16.89 He will cut you free from the code of the wicked 00:43:16.93\00:43:20.06 that's binding you 00:43:20.10\00:43:21.43 and those old things that are hanging on, 00:43:21.46\00:43:25.07 they bind you up. 00:43:25.10\00:43:27.14 Now, let me prove something to you, 00:43:27.17\00:43:29.60 I love this scripture, 00:43:29.64\00:43:30.97 because to me, it proves the authenticity of scripture. 00:43:31.01\00:43:35.38 When someone is quoting God, 00:43:35.41\00:43:38.81 they were very careful 00:43:38.85\00:43:40.72 to quote just what God would say. 00:43:40.75\00:43:44.02 Any man who wrote this would have said, 00:43:44.05\00:43:47.42 "You've not been as my servant David 00:43:47.46\00:43:49.29 who kept My commandments, 00:43:49.32\00:43:50.66 who followed Me with all of his heart 00:43:50.69\00:43:52.06 to do only what was right in my eyes 00:43:52.09\00:43:53.93 except when he committed adultery with Bathsheba 00:43:53.96\00:43:58.00 and when he murdered Uriah the Hittite." 00:43:58.03\00:44:01.90 Don't you agree? 00:44:01.94\00:44:03.27 I mean we would never talk about David 00:44:03.30\00:44:05.34 like this and I'm gonna prove to you in the Bible. 00:44:05.37\00:44:07.74 Turn to the next chapter, 00:44:07.78\00:44:10.41 1 Kings 15:4, 00:44:10.45\00:44:14.98 I think this is so exciting. 00:44:15.02\00:44:18.65 1 Kings 15:4, now, 00:44:18.69\00:44:22.26 the author is not quoting God. 00:44:22.29\00:44:24.36 Now he is recounting the story, verse 4, 00:44:24.39\00:44:28.83 "Nevertheless for David's sake, 00:44:28.86\00:44:31.97 the Lord, his God, gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, 00:44:32.00\00:44:35.84 by setting up his son after him 00:44:35.87\00:44:37.71 and by establishing Jerusalem." 00:44:37.74\00:44:41.04 Because David did what was right 00:44:41.08\00:44:44.51 in the eyes of the Lord, 00:44:44.55\00:44:47.12 had not turned aside from anything 00:44:47.15\00:44:50.12 that he commanded him, 00:44:50.15\00:44:51.92 all the days of his life except 00:44:51.95\00:44:56.69 in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 00:44:56.73\00:45:01.96 That's man's record, that's man's record. 00:45:02.00\00:45:06.30 Turn back again, let me go over 1 Kings 14 again 00:45:06.33\00:45:09.54 'cause you guys ought to be getting really excited 00:45:09.57\00:45:11.91 right about now. 00:45:11.94\00:45:13.27 If we realize God forgets 00:45:13.31\00:45:17.85 what we ask Him to forgive. 00:45:17.88\00:45:19.41 Here David had prayed Psalm 51 and after David died, 00:45:19.45\00:45:24.92 these are the words, 00:45:24.95\00:45:27.19 the word of the Lord about David. 00:45:27.22\00:45:29.89 He is talking to, 00:45:29.92\00:45:31.26 a message to King Jeroboam and saying, 00:45:31.29\00:45:33.63 "Jeroboam, you've not been like My servant David." 00:45:33.66\00:45:37.90 But now he's talking about David, 00:45:37.93\00:45:39.83 "My servant David, 00:45:39.87\00:45:41.54 who kept My commandments, 00:45:41.57\00:45:44.04 who followed Me with all of his heart 00:45:44.07\00:45:47.18 to do only what was right 00:45:47.21\00:45:51.35 in My eyes." 00:45:51.38\00:45:53.48 God is not a man that He could lie. 00:45:53.52\00:45:56.55 The only reason that God could declare 00:45:56.58\00:45:58.99 David's absolute innocence 00:45:59.02\00:46:01.86 is because God forgets the sins we ask Him to forgive. 00:46:01.89\00:46:06.53 Psalm 103:12 says, 00:46:06.56\00:46:12.70 "As far as the east is from the west, 00:46:12.73\00:46:17.21 so far has He removed our sin." 00:46:17.24\00:46:21.64 How exciting? 00:46:21.68\00:46:23.35 Write that in scripture reference down 00:46:23.38\00:46:26.28 and listen to Isaiah 43:25. 00:46:26.31\00:46:32.45 Isaiah 43:25, 00:46:32.49\00:46:38.53 this is the Lord speaking, 00:46:38.56\00:46:41.10 I still hear pages turning, 00:46:41.13\00:46:44.27 God says, 00:46:44.30\00:46:45.63 "I, even I, 00:46:45.67\00:46:47.94 am He who blots out." 00:46:47.97\00:46:51.67 And in the Amplified Version says, 00:46:51.71\00:46:53.44 "And cancels your transgressions," 00:46:53.48\00:46:55.44 that's what that word blots out means, 00:46:55.48\00:46:57.18 it's like to race it and he says, 00:46:57.21\00:46:59.41 "For My own sake, 00:46:59.45\00:47:01.88 and I will not remember your sins." 00:47:01.92\00:47:06.62 Hallelujah. 00:47:06.65\00:47:09.29 Now since you're in Isaiah, turn over to Chapter 44, 00:47:09.32\00:47:13.19 let's look at what God says 00:47:13.23\00:47:15.56 in verse 22. 00:47:15.60\00:47:20.14 He says, "I have blotted out, 00:47:20.17\00:47:24.47 like a thick cloud, your transgressions, 00:47:24.51\00:47:27.94 and like a cloud, your sins. 00:47:27.98\00:47:31.01 Return to Me, 00:47:31.05\00:47:32.65 for I have redeemed you." 00:47:32.68\00:47:36.28 Have you been redeemed by the Lord? 00:47:36.32\00:47:39.45 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. 00:47:39.49\00:47:42.42 God has blotted out like a thick cloud, 00:47:42.46\00:47:45.43 your transgressions. 00:47:45.46\00:47:46.80 You know, this is all part, 00:47:46.83\00:47:49.20 these are old Testaments but turn to Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:47:49.23\00:47:53.47 Hebrews Chapter 8, 00:47:53.50\00:47:58.37 this is part of the new covenant, 00:47:58.41\00:48:00.71 this is new covenant language as well. 00:48:00.74\00:48:06.45 God didn't have, He doesn't have favorites. 00:48:06.48\00:48:10.22 God didn't just blot out the sins of David. 00:48:10.25\00:48:14.52 Listen to Hebrews Chapter 8 00:48:14.56\00:48:16.26 and we're gonna look at verse 8. 00:48:16.29\00:48:19.03 That's where we will begin. 00:48:19.06\00:48:20.56 Actually I think I've got mine, try to follow me 00:48:20.60\00:48:23.43 'cause I have a little ellipse in here, 00:48:23.47\00:48:26.43 so that means I've left something out 00:48:26.47\00:48:27.80 but Hebrews 8:10, 00:48:27.84\00:48:31.07 "This is the covenant," God has said, 00:48:31.11\00:48:33.61 "I'm gonna make a covenant after these days, 00:48:33.64\00:48:35.98 a new covenant with a new covenant people. 00:48:36.01\00:48:39.61 I am going to make the covenant and this is the covenant. 00:48:39.65\00:48:44.59 I will put My laws in their minds. 00:48:44.62\00:48:48.56 I will write them on their hearts." 00:48:48.59\00:48:51.03 They are not just gonna be commandments on stone anymore, 00:48:51.06\00:48:55.76 "I will put them in their mind 00:48:55.80\00:48:59.27 and write them on their hearts. 00:48:59.30\00:49:01.50 I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 00:49:01.54\00:49:05.51 Their sins and their lawless deeds, 00:49:05.54\00:49:10.31 I will remember no more." 00:49:10.35\00:49:13.31 Did you know that the Ten Commandments 00:49:13.35\00:49:17.29 are written in the future tense? 00:49:17.32\00:49:20.49 You know what the significance of that is? 00:49:20.52\00:49:23.06 They are written in a future tense 00:49:23.09\00:49:24.43 in a double negative, that means they are a promise. 00:49:24.46\00:49:28.06 When God began the Ten Commandments, 00:49:28.10\00:49:31.47 what is the preamble to the Ten Commandments? 00:49:31.50\00:49:34.07 "I am the Lord, your God, 00:49:34.10\00:49:36.37 who brought you out of Egypt. 00:49:36.40\00:49:38.94 I brought you out 00:49:38.97\00:49:41.14 of this place of slavery to sin 00:49:41.18\00:49:44.51 and he says, 00:49:44.55\00:49:45.98 therefore, I mean, this is covenant love language. 00:49:46.01\00:49:51.35 I am your God, I've redeemed you, He said. 00:49:51.39\00:49:54.79 Therefore, 00:49:54.82\00:49:56.16 you shall have no other gods besides Me. 00:49:56.19\00:50:00.60 You will not bow down to worship idols. 00:50:00.63\00:50:05.50 You will not take My name in vain. 00:50:05.53\00:50:08.47 You will just be so excited to spend the Sabbath with Me, 00:50:08.50\00:50:13.71 to have this time with Me. 00:50:13.74\00:50:16.08 You will honor your mother and your father. 00:50:16.11\00:50:19.78 You will not murder, you will not commit adultery, 00:50:19.81\00:50:24.42 you will not steal, 00:50:24.45\00:50:26.05 you will not bear false testimony." 00:50:26.09\00:50:29.02 Why? 00:50:29.06\00:50:30.39 Because that's what living 00:50:30.43\00:50:33.43 in covenant relationship with Me is all about. 00:50:33.46\00:50:37.60 Now God says, 00:50:37.63\00:50:38.97 "I'm gonna write these, not just on stone 00:50:39.00\00:50:42.24 but by the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:50:42.27\00:50:43.64 I'm gonna put these laws in your mind 00:50:43.67\00:50:45.64 and write them on your hearts, 00:50:45.67\00:50:48.28 and I'll be your God, you will be My people." 00:50:48.31\00:50:51.15 Do you hear this love language? 00:50:51.18\00:50:53.42 And then He says, 00:50:53.45\00:50:54.78 "Their sins and their lawless deeds 00:50:54.82\00:50:57.05 I will remember no more," 00:50:57.09\00:50:58.75 because as we come to God, confessing our sins, 00:50:58.79\00:51:03.32 when we recognize our sins and we confess our sins, 00:51:03.36\00:51:07.30 in sincere hearted repentance. 00:51:07.33\00:51:09.60 God applies the blood of Jesus to blot out our sins 00:51:09.63\00:51:14.37 and then, 00:51:14.40\00:51:15.74 as we receive His forgiveness, 00:51:15.77\00:51:20.64 it is God who grants us that forgiveness, 00:51:20.68\00:51:24.31 who empowers us to change our conduct, 00:51:24.35\00:51:27.08 to turn away from that sin 00:51:27.12\00:51:30.15 but He blots out that sin, they're covered, 00:51:30.19\00:51:33.19 and they are cancelled in the memory of God. 00:51:33.22\00:51:36.02 When He looks on our record, 00:51:36.06\00:51:38.06 all He sees is the blood of Jesus. 00:51:38.09\00:51:41.93 So, let's... 00:51:41.96\00:51:43.30 I wanna see, 00:51:43.33\00:51:44.67 I am having a little eye problem tonight, 00:51:44.70\00:51:47.10 that's why I had typed those up 00:51:47.14\00:51:50.21 in a little bit larger font 00:51:50.24\00:51:56.64 but let's... 00:51:56.68\00:51:58.28 And I wanna see, I don't know, I don't think you can get that, 00:51:58.31\00:52:02.08 here it is, in my Bible at Psalm 51, 00:52:02.12\00:52:05.65 I have a reference 00:52:05.69\00:52:08.96 which is where God said about David after he repented, 00:52:08.99\00:52:12.26 which is what man would still say about David. 00:52:14.36\00:52:16.80 But let's read what the Bible says, 00:52:16.83\00:52:20.77 "Have mercy upon me O God..." 00:52:20.80\00:52:23.10 This is confession in the forgiveness of sin. 00:52:23.14\00:52:26.91 Have mercy upon me O God, 00:52:26.94\00:52:30.08 according to Your loving kindness, 00:52:30.11\00:52:32.48 according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, 00:52:32.51\00:52:35.28 blot out my transgressions. 00:52:35.32\00:52:37.59 O Lord, wash me, thoroughly, from my iniquity, 00:52:37.62\00:52:42.16 cleanse me from my sin, 00:52:42.19\00:52:43.53 for I acknowledge my transgressions, 00:52:43.56\00:52:46.36 and my sin is always before me. 00:52:46.39\00:52:49.60 Against you and you only have I sinned 00:52:49.63\00:52:53.03 and done this evil in your sight 00:52:53.07\00:52:55.24 that you may be found just when you speak 00:52:55.27\00:52:57.64 and blameless when you judge. 00:52:57.67\00:53:00.31 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity 00:53:00.34\00:53:03.28 and in sin my mother conceived me, 00:53:03.31\00:53:04.88 behold, you desire truth in the inward parts 00:53:04.91\00:53:09.12 and in the hidden part, 00:53:09.15\00:53:10.79 you will make me to know wisdom. 00:53:10.82\00:53:13.72 O Lord, purge me with hyssop, and I shall be cleaned. 00:53:13.76\00:53:19.36 Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. 00:53:19.39\00:53:23.13 Make me hear joy and gladness 00:53:23.16\00:53:26.33 that the bones you have broken might rejoice. 00:53:26.37\00:53:29.74 Hide your face from my sins, 00:53:29.77\00:53:32.21 blot out all my iniquities, 00:53:32.24\00:53:34.21 create in me a clean heart O God, 00:53:34.24\00:53:36.91 and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 00:53:36.95\00:53:40.22 O Lord, do not cast me away from Your presence 00:53:40.25\00:53:43.32 and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 00:53:43.35\00:53:48.39 Restore to me, the joy of Your salvation, 00:53:48.42\00:53:52.49 and uphold me by Your generous spirit, 00:53:52.53\00:53:56.30 then, I will teach transgressors your ways, 00:53:56.33\00:54:01.50 and sinners shall be converted to you. 00:54:01.54\00:54:04.67 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, 00:54:04.71\00:54:07.04 the God of my salvation, 00:54:07.08\00:54:09.24 and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. 00:54:09.28\00:54:13.52 O Lord, open my lips 00:54:13.55\00:54:16.18 and my mouth shall show forth Your praise, 00:54:16.22\00:54:20.56 for You do not desire sacrifice, 00:54:20.59\00:54:22.69 or I would give it. 00:54:22.72\00:54:24.06 You do not delight in burnt offering. 00:54:24.09\00:54:26.70 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, 00:54:26.73\00:54:30.77 a broken and a contrite heart, 00:54:30.80\00:54:34.07 these, O God, You will not despise. 00:54:34.10\00:54:37.61 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion, 00:54:37.64\00:54:40.51 build the walls of Jerusalem, 00:54:40.54\00:54:43.18 then You shall be pleased 00:54:43.21\00:54:45.55 with the sacrifices of righteousness 00:54:45.58\00:54:48.95 with burnt offering and whole burnt offering, 00:54:48.98\00:54:53.02 and then they shall offer bulls on your altar. 00:54:53.05\00:54:56.89 I just want to encourage you, 00:54:56.93\00:55:00.00 there's a sermon I did once at camp meeting. 00:55:00.03\00:55:05.77 It was titled The Joy of Repentance, 00:55:05.80\00:55:09.90 and I had a lot of people who said to me, 00:55:09.94\00:55:12.77 "The Joy of Repentance." 00:55:12.81\00:55:16.41 Repentance is a gift from God to be received with joy. 00:55:16.44\00:55:21.82 All He asks of us 00:55:21.85\00:55:24.55 is that we be quick to recognize our sin, 00:55:24.59\00:55:27.69 and we're not always so quick, are we? 00:55:27.72\00:55:30.46 How do we recognize sin? 00:55:30.49\00:55:32.43 I want to tell you, 00:55:32.46\00:55:33.80 the more you get this word in your heart, 00:55:33.83\00:55:35.70 the more time you spend in this word, 00:55:35.73\00:55:38.00 the more you will recognize when you were displeasing God. 00:55:38.03\00:55:41.57 But it's also a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. 00:55:41.60\00:55:45.14 When we ask day by day, 00:55:45.17\00:55:48.01 "O Lord, fill me with Your Spirit." 00:55:48.04\00:55:51.08 I pray that every day, 00:55:51.11\00:55:53.48 because I can only be filled to the degree I am surrendered 00:55:53.52\00:55:56.79 and sometimes I am not surrendered. 00:55:56.82\00:55:59.95 So I needed a fresh filling everyday 00:55:59.99\00:56:03.02 and then if the Holy Spirit is in me, 00:56:03.06\00:56:08.66 when He begins to let me know, 00:56:08.70\00:56:11.67 whoops, this is wrong, 00:56:11.70\00:56:13.67 then I know, you know, I pray, 00:56:13.70\00:56:15.34 O Lord make me quick to recognize 00:56:15.37\00:56:18.14 when I am not. 00:56:18.17\00:56:20.28 But the Holy Spirit brings godly sorrow. 00:56:20.31\00:56:23.28 You know, sin is not without sorrow, 00:56:23.31\00:56:24.91 even forgiven sin is not without sorrow. 00:56:24.95\00:56:27.98 But He gives me that, 00:56:28.02\00:56:30.59 and then, after that godly sorrow, 00:56:30.62\00:56:33.72 I confess my sins, 00:56:33.76\00:56:35.92 and the most important thing in is to open up your heart 00:56:35.96\00:56:38.79 to receive God's forgiveness 00:56:38.83\00:56:40.40 because He not only will forgive you, 00:56:40.43\00:56:43.30 but He will forget what He forgives. 00:56:43.33\00:56:46.80 And then, of course, 00:56:46.84\00:56:48.30 we are totally dependent upon God 00:56:48.34\00:56:50.74 to change our behavior. 00:56:50.77\00:56:52.14 Are we not? 00:56:52.17\00:56:53.74 The Bible says in Jeremiah 00:56:53.78\00:56:56.28 that we can't change ourselves anymore 00:56:56.31\00:56:59.91 than a leopard can change it spots, 00:56:59.95\00:57:02.75 or a Ethiopian can change his skin. 00:57:02.78\00:57:06.89 We've got to recognize our dependence upon God. 00:57:06.92\00:57:11.49 We've got to recognize that God loves us so much, 00:57:11.53\00:57:15.36 and as David did, 00:57:15.40\00:57:17.23 we should appeal for God's mercy, 00:57:17.27\00:57:20.14 and depend totally upon His love, 00:57:20.17\00:57:23.30 because God loves you so much. 00:57:23.34\00:57:27.48 You're worth to him, 00:57:27.51\00:57:29.34 you're worth nothing less to Him 00:57:29.38\00:57:31.61 than the price that He paid for you, 00:57:31.65\00:57:33.82 with the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. 00:57:33.85\00:57:37.59 What a God! 00:57:37.62\00:57:39.02 We just want to thank you so much 00:57:39.05\00:57:40.56 for joining us tonight 00:57:40.59\00:57:42.26 with the Thompsonville Seventh-day Adventist 00:57:42.29\00:57:46.26 Bible study here in Thompsonville. 00:57:46.29\00:57:48.76 This program is called A Sharper Focus 00:57:48.80\00:57:51.23 and it has been our joy to study with you. 00:57:51.27\00:57:54.67 We hope that God has blessed you. 00:57:54.70\00:57:57.54 Now, may the Lord fill you full of His Spirit, 00:57:57.57\00:58:02.64 and may you find His love, always. 00:58:02.68\00:58:04.91
