that is kin to judgment

read the story of sin
and sincere repentance,

divine forgiveness.

familiar with this,

go through the scripture

that God will really bring
out some new nuggets of truth

I prayed there were several ways

that I could have gone
tonight but just this afternoon,

the Lord impressed me
to share this information,

so there is somebody out there

that really needs to hear it.

So let's begin
with 2 Samuel 11:1.

We are going to
hear a story about a man
00:03:02.28\00:03:05.15
after God's own heart.
00:03:05.18\00:03:07.28
That's what God
called David, didn't He?
00:03:07.32\00:03:09.75
And the scripture reads,

"It happened in the
spring of the year..."
00:03:11.45\00:03:13.56
This was after the
rainy season of winter.
00:03:13.59\00:03:16.86
"The spring of the year,
00:03:16.89\00:03:18.23
at the time when
kings go out to battle,
00:03:18.26\00:03:20.86
that David sent Joab
and his servants with him,
00:03:20.90\00:03:23.70
and all Israel,
00:03:23.73\00:03:25.07
and they destroyed
the people of Ammon
00:03:25.10\00:03:27.10
and besieged Rabbah.
00:03:27.14\00:03:29.04
But David
remained at Jerusalem."

Do you see a problem?

There is a problem here.

This is a time when kings
should be going out to battle,

but David is at the
height of his power right now.

All of his
enemies have been subdued

except for this
remnant of Ammonites.
00:03:49.66\00:03:53.06
And his treasuries, his
coffers are overflowing,

and David is
feeling very self-confident,

very self- reliant, and
he shirks his duty as king.
00:04:00.37\00:04:04.14
He doesn't go
out with his troops.
00:04:04.17\00:04:08.98
He has become apathetic.
00:04:09.01\00:04:11.81
And apathy is a very
dangerous heart condition.

It's dangerous in
our physical realm,

it's also dangerous
in the spiritual realm.

Verse 2, "Then it
happened one evening

that David arose from his bed

and walked on the
roof of the king's house."

Now, he's walking where
he shouldn't be walking.

Well, you say why?

I mean to walk on the
roof, this was common.

I mean there's,
there're flat top roofs

with gardens on them,

but he should
have been in battle.

So he's somewhere

where he shouldn't be right now.

"And from the roof
he saw a woman bathing

and the woman was very beautiful

to behold."

Now, unlike Job, do
you remember what Job,

the covenant that Job
said he made with his eyes.

Job said," I've made
a covenant with my eyes

not to lust after a woman."

But unlike Job,

David is inflamed with lust

and he succumbs
to the temptation.

He doesn't pray,
get behind me Satan,

he doesn't pause to pray at all,
00:05:18.45\00:05:21.25
he just acts on the
passions of his flesh
00:05:21.28\00:05:26.92
without thinking about God.
00:05:26.96\00:05:29.49
This is the man
that God described

as a man after my own heart.

So now verse 3,

"David sent and
inquired about the woman.

And someone said,

'Is this not Bathsheba,

the daughter of Eliam,

the wife of Uriah the Hittite?'

Then David sent messengers,

and he took
her," or they took her.

Now this isn't an indication
that they took her by force.

Actually if Bathsheba
had resisted or said no,

she wouldn't have had to go

but, you know, she
was a beautiful woman,

her husband had been gone
to battle for a long time.

Maybe she felt a
little bit flattered

by the king's attentions.
00:06:11.33\00:06:13.23
Maybe she thought
she could have a night
00:06:13.27\00:06:16.07
of innocent
flirtation with the king.
00:06:16.10\00:06:19.11
But let me tell you something,

there is no such thing
as innocent flirtation.
00:06:20.51\00:06:25.45
So this is a toxic combination,

temptation and flirtation.

"She came to him,

and he lay with her,

for she was
cleansed from her impurity,

and she returned to her house.

And the woman," what?

"She conceived."

This is the game changer.

There are

consequences to sin.

'Send me Uriah the Hittite.'"

Uriah is Bathsheba's husband.

"Joab sent Uriah to David

and when Uriah had come to him,

David asked how Joab was doing,

and how the people were doing,

and how the war prospered."

David's buttering
up Uriah right now.
00:07:17.10\00:07:21.10
"David said to Uriah,
'Go down to your house
00:07:21.14\00:07:23.81
and wash your feet.'"

What does that mean?

They washed their feet
00:07:26.57\00:07:27.91
before they
entered into their home.

So he's sending him home.

David's thinking, he is
trying to cover his sin.

So he's sending Uriah home

hoping that Uriah,

who's been to battle will
lay with his beautiful wife

and when the baby comes along,

no one will know it's David's.

But Uriah slept at the door...

Oh, let me read this.

"'Go and wash your feet,'

So Uriah departed
from the king's house,

and a gift of food
from the king followed him."

David wanted
this to be some feast

at their home.

Verse 9," But
Uriah slept at the door

of the king's house

with all the
servants of his lord,

down to his house."

Uriah was a
faithful and loyal soldier,

and he felt it was wrong

to go and to sleep with his wife

when all the rest of the troops

are still out at war.

Uriah said to David..."

Let me back up, verse 10,

told David, saying,

'Uriah did not go

David said to Uriah,

'Did you not
come from a journey?

Why did you not go
down to your house?'

And Uriah said to David,

'The ark and Israel and
Judah are dwelling in tents,
00:08:47.46\00:08:51.39
and my lord Joab and
the servants of my lord
00:08:51.43\00:08:53.90
are encamped in the open fields.
00:08:53.93\00:08:55.70
Shall I then go to my house
00:08:55.73\00:08:57.83
to eat and drink,
and to lie with my wife?

As you live, and
as your soul lives,

I will not do this thing.'

Then David said to Uriah,

'Wait here today also,

So Uriah remained
in Jerusalem that day

Now when David called him again,

verse 13," He ate
and drank before him,

and he made him drunk."

David thought, okay,
this man's got high morals,

he's got high standards

but you know what liquor
does to morals and standards,

it kind of loosens people up.

He thinks, if I
can get him drunk,

he'll go lay with his wife.

"And at evening

Uriah went out to lie on his bed

with the servants of his lord,

but he did not go
down to his house."

Do you see
what's happening here?

Guilt and pride
are causing David
00:09:55.66\00:10:00.20
to up the ante,
00:10:00.23\00:10:01.56
to increase his efforts,
00:10:01.60\00:10:03.23
to cover his sin
00:10:03.26\00:10:05.43
and you know,
this is what happens
00:10:05.47\00:10:07.00
with so many people.
00:10:07.04\00:10:08.57
You start off telling a
little lie to cover a sin
00:10:08.60\00:10:11.47
which becomes a bigger lie.
00:10:11.51\00:10:13.24
We see that so many
people go down this path.

There was no
remorse in David's heart.
00:10:16.64\00:10:18.88
He wasn't
thinking about the Lord

and, "In the morning it happened

that David
wrote a letter to Joab

and he sent it by
the hand of Uriah."

Uriah did not know

that he was carrying
his own death decree.

What David wrote
in the letter, saying,

"Set Uriah in the
forefront of the hottest battle,

then retreat from him,

that he may be
struck down and die."

Can you imagine,
here is faithful Uriah

carrying the
letter to the Captain Joab

and David has planned his death.

in the front of the battle,

then you all retreat

and leave him there

so that he will be
struck down and die.

So God, sends the
prophet Nathan to David.

And he came to
him, and said to him,

this is Nathan speaking,

he's gonna tell story.

King David,

"There were two men in one city,

one rich and the other poor.
00:12:34.22\00:12:36.85
The rich man had exceedingly
many flocks and herds.

But the poor man had nothing,
except one little ewe lamb

which he had
bought and nourished,

and it grew up together with him

They would
actually have the lamb

This story that Nathan is
telling is an illustration,

riches, he had the wives,

he had the concubines,

but Uriah the Hittite only had

the one dear woman in his life.

Now when David hears this,

I love this, this is so human.

Verse 5, "So David's anger

was greatly
aroused against the man,

and he said to Nathan,

'As the Lord lives,

the man who has done
this shall surely die!

And he shall restore
fourfold for the lamb,

because he did this thing

He was enraged,

blinded to his own condition.

pass judgment, wasn't he?

have this rich man

Now look at verse 7,

"Then Nathan said to David,

Can you imagine
the abrupt reversal

of David's fury

when he hears Nathan say,

And if that had been too little,
