that I was claiming personally

and I was praying

and I was praying
this back to the Lord

as His promise and I said,

"Father, thank You

that because of you
I'm in Christ Jesus.

He's become my
righteousness, my redemption,

my sanctification.

And He is my wisdom

and because I'm in Christ
I'm one in spirit with You.

And then I don't know about
you but just saying those words

made me realize how
far off mark I really was

and I began to weep.

And I said, Father,
I don't even understand

what it means to be
one in spirit with You.

I want to be You say I am.

But He had been
teaching me such great things

and I had been running in
that teaching for sometime

and then somehow there
have been about a two weeks

where I just, it was
like I had run out of gas,

just the spiritual faultier.

Have you ever experienced that?

And suddenly I
woke up and I realized

I'm not even doing

what the Lord
had taught me to do.

So as I was praying
and weeping before the Lord

I said, "Lord how is it
that I can walk with you

so closely sometimes
that I sense Your heartbeat?

And then at other times
00:04:40.31\00:04:41.88
I find myself
distanced from you."

Frank, have you
ever been through that?

Many times. Many times.

And it's just so amazing to
me and suddenly as I was praying

voice of the Lord,

know that the Lord

has impressed a
thought upon your mind

by the power of the Holy Spirit?

And that's His
still small voice.

And suddenly this
still small voice of the Lord

spoke to me and He said,

the wall of resistance

that you're hitting.

I was excited.

because I thought, yes,
that's exactly how I felt.

I felt like I had hit a wall.

So and couple of weeks went by

and I'm still praying every day,

"Lord, what is
this wall of resistance?

When are You going to tell me?"

And one day I was
claiming 2 Corinthians 3:18

and I was praying that
promise back to the Lord

and saying "Father, I
thank You that you taken

the veil from my eyes
00:05:49.44\00:05:51.78
and that because you have,

I'm beholding as in the mirror

Your glory and
You are leading me

from glory to glory
00:06:00.36\00:06:02.49
by the power of
Your Holy Spirit.

Then once again

I realized am I
truly being changed

going from glory to glory.

What is glory?

When God talks about His
glory what is He talking about?

He is talking
about His character.

When Moses asked to
see the glory of God

what happened was
the Lord came down.

He hid Moses in
the cliff of the rock

and He pass by and He started
proclaiming His character.

So what 2
Corinthians 3:18 is telling us

is that if the
Lord is leading us

by His spirit
from glory to glory

He is leading us

from one level
of God's character

to the next.
00:06:49.04\00:06:50.71
And once again

I began to weep before the Lord.

and I've said,
"Father I just feel like
00:06:55.41\00:06:57.71
I'm at that wall
and I don't understand
00:06:57.75\00:06:59.85
what this is all about.

So I was praying so earnestly

and suddenly I saw
a picture in my mind.

Has that ever happened
to you when you're praying?

Has God ever
showed you something?

You know, I'm a visual person
00:07:13.70\00:07:15.50
and when I see
something it's amazing.

And so, as I was praying
what I saw was this staircase

that went all
the way up to heaven.
00:07:21.87\00:07:25.14
I assume it went to heaven.
00:07:25.17\00:07:26.57
It was beyond the clouds.
00:07:26.61\00:07:28.91
And I can see myself
running along the staircase.
00:07:28.94\00:07:32.28
And, Johnny, I was probably,
00:07:32.31\00:07:34.78
maybe 25 percent of the
way up what I could see.
00:07:34.82\00:07:38.52
And as I was running along
00:07:38.55\00:07:40.92
and I'm looking
back over my shoulder,

I was running full force
00:07:43.36\00:07:44.76
and all of a sudden it was just,

I hit the wall.
00:07:47.20\00:07:50.37
And I stopped and I
looked up and I'm six feet tall

but this wall was
at least 60 feet high
00:07:55.70\00:08:00.41
and I stepped back and I looked
00:08:00.44\00:08:02.34
and what the wall
was, was the next step.
00:08:02.38\00:08:06.45
I mean it was the front
of the next step if you will.
00:08:06.48\00:08:10.12
So I'm praying
and I said, "Lord,
00:08:10.15\00:08:12.72
what is this wall
that I'm hitting?"
00:08:12.75\00:08:16.09
And if you don't hear
anything else I say tonight
00:08:16.12\00:08:19.16
listen to this
00:08:19.19\00:08:20.53
because what the Lord said was
00:08:20.56\00:08:22.86
"The wall of resistance
00:08:22.90\00:08:25.23
that you're hitting
00:08:25.27\00:08:26.70
is the wall of
self preservation."

Let me repeat that.

"The wall of resistance

See, for us to go from one level

of God's character

to the next we have
to be willing to give up

a little bit more
of self, don't we?

And it's so funny

how we can be willing to
follow the Lord in certain areas

but there are some areas

that we are little protective of

and God was saying
that's your problem.

That's that wall
of self preservation.

So turn if you will
to 2 Samuel Chapter 22.

I asked the
Lord, I said, "Father,

how do I get over this wall?"
00:09:13.85\00:09:16.25
I mean, here's this, you know,
00:09:16.28\00:09:18.25
six feet, sixty feet
00:09:18.29\00:09:19.95
how do I get up
to this next level?
00:09:19.99\00:09:22.66
And the Lord led me
to 2 Samuel Chapter 22
00:09:22.69\00:09:28.10
and let's look
at verses 29 and 30.
00:09:28.13\00:09:33.67
He said,
00:09:33.70\00:09:36.27
and this is
actually David writing
00:09:36.30\00:09:38.97
and he says, "For
You are my lamp, O Lord."
00:09:39.01\00:09:43.14
Doesn't the Bible say
in Psalms 119:105 that
00:09:43.18\00:09:46.51
"The word of God
is a lamp to our feet,
00:09:46.55\00:09:48.58
the light to our path."
00:09:48.62\00:09:49.95
And Psalms 119:130 says
00:09:49.98\00:09:51.95
that the entrance of
His word brings light.
00:09:51.99\00:09:55.09
So he said, "You
are my lamp, O Lord,
00:09:55.12\00:09:57.29
the Lord shall
enlighten my darkness.
00:09:57.33\00:10:00.20
For by You I can
run against a troop,
00:10:00.23\00:10:03.97
by my God I can
leap over a wall."

So as the Lord led me to this

what I was impressed,

what the Holy Spirit
impressed upon me was

that the only way to
get to that next level,

to get over the wall

is that I had to be
willing to surrender.

Now let me ask just
the men for a second.

If I use the word surrender

just to any man on the street.

If I come up and say,

okay, you got to surrender

what is the man thinking?

What does that
word mean to a man?

Lost the battle.
He's lost the battle.

It's over.

It's, you know, this is end.

Now for the women,

if I come up to a
woman on the street and say,

you must surrender

what's going
through a woman's mind?

Well, the woman usually says is

"Somebody is gonna control me."

It's like,

you know, that's a
frightening thought to surrender

because someone
is gonna control me.
00:11:10.33\00:11:12.93
And yet, when we are talking

to the carnal
person on the street
00:11:15.57\00:11:17.21
talking about the Lord we say,

what you got to do is surrender

and they are sitting
there going wait a minute
00:11:20.21\00:11:22.31
that, you know,
just wait a minute.
00:11:22.34\00:11:24.15
What do you mean surrender?

And even I would
ask how do we surrender?

I was praying here
the Lord showed me this

and God I don't know if
He works with you this way.

Maybe I'm dull

but God will show me
just a little bit at a time.

He let's me ruminate on stuff.

He will show me something

and He-- It's just something

that's kind of
bubbling around in my heart

and then He will
explain a little bit more.

And then the more
earnestly I seek Him,

So I was praying one day

and the promise of 1 John 2:6

is one that always
kind of brings me up short.

Let's just turn
there and look at that.

And I call it a promise
because any commandment of God

is a promise of something
that He will do in our lives.

And John writes in 1 John 2:6

"He who says he abides in Him"

in Christ

"ought himself also to
walk just as He walked."

So I'm taking
that as an affirmation.

You know, Isaiah 55:11 God says

that "His word does
not return to Him void."

Jeremiah 1:12 He says,

"He watches over
His word to perform in."

In Romans 4:17 says,

He is the "God who
gives life to the dead

and calls things that are not
as though they already were."
00:12:55.47\00:12:59.11
So I was praying this back
to the Lord and I'm saying,

"Lord, I thank you
00:13:02.84\00:13:04.85
that I'm in Christ and
I'm walking as He walked."

And I thought oh, no,
00:13:10.59\00:13:13.76
nothing could be further
from the truth in my mind.

And I realized that
I was calling things
00:13:16.89\00:13:20.20
that are not as
though they were.

This is God's plan for my life

but I thought "Lord,
it's not happening yet.

I'm not walking as Jesus

and You tell me that
I should, that I must."

And so I was again
getting a little bit weepy

and I'm not a
weepy woman, right.

Usually if I'm going to cry,

it's in the
presence of the Lord.

And

so as I was
crying out to the Lord

and saying, "Father, I
know I'm falling so short.

I'm not walking
as Christ walked."

Once again I pressed
in and as I was praying

what I saw was this
little bitty sugar ant

just that
miniscule tiniest of ants

and next to that
was this huge elephant

and this is what the
Lord impressed upon my mind.

He said, "Shelley,
00:14:14.22\00:14:15.85
in your limited human strength
00:14:15.88\00:14:19.15
you could be compared
00:14:19.19\00:14:20.92
to this little tiny sugar ant.
00:14:20.96\00:14:23.53
That's your capacity.
00:14:23.56\00:14:25.63
That's your strength
00:14:25.66\00:14:27.33
whereas My power
00:14:27.36\00:14:30.40
could be
compared to this elephant
00:14:30.43\00:14:32.57
that's millions of times larger.
00:14:32.60\00:14:35.90
And, child, when I
ask you to surrender

I'm not asking you to
try to do this in your power.

I'm asking you
to be yoked with Me

and draw on My power."

Now just get that picture
in your mind for a second.

Think of a little tiny sugar ant

with this big
elephant and it's yoked.

Now here's its
little legs going on.

Who is carrying the load?

Who is carrying the load
if they are yoked together?

The elephant is.

So see, when we
are yoked to Christ

God's plan for our life

and Oh, I pray that

those of you who are
watching at home will hear this

that God's plan for
our lives is that we learn

to be totally
dependent upon Him.

And so He says to me

if you will
surrender to My power

My grace will be
sufficient for you

for My power will be
made perfect in your weakness.

So as this progressed
along and God is teaching me

one day I was
praying Psalms 16:11

and I said, "Father, You said

that You will show
me the path of life

and that I will find joy in
Your presence forever more."

And I said, "If I'm
supposed to be walking
00:15:58.52\00:16:01.12
in Christ footsteps
00:16:01.16\00:16:03.32
You got to show me
this path to follow."

And what I heard
in my mind was this.

"If you want to
follow in My Son's footstep

you must walk in the
path of His passion."

So what was the
path of Christ passion?

He began at the
Garden of Gethsemane
00:16:25.55\00:16:30.72
and then it progressed
to the hill of Calvary
00:16:30.75\00:16:34.92
and then it
progressed to that empty tomb.
00:16:34.96\00:16:38.93
So what I want to
share with you tonight

is a prayer of surrender.
00:16:42.86\00:16:46.70
It's a method of surrender,

something that can
get through our mind
00:16:48.74\00:16:50.34
so that we even understand
what surrender is all about

and it follows
those three steps.

The Garden of Gethsemane,

the hill of Calvary
and that empty tomb.

So let's look at those.

If you will please
turn to Luke 22:42.

When Jesus was in the
garden the passion of His heart

is expressed in Luke 22:42.

And every morning as we get up

we should also if you,

as it were visit our own
little Garden of Gethsemane.

In Luke 22:42 Jesus said,

"Lord, not My
will but thine be done.

I had prayed so hard
that morning to surrender

and I was riding for
the glory of the Lord

and she calls me, this
is about the fourth time

and I picked it up and I
said, "Sunny, I cannot talk."

And she says, "Fine, I
don't have a sister anymore.

You don't love me.

Just forget about it."

And, you know, what happened

to this sweet
surrendered Christian?
