And comes from the DVD series, "Awesome Science" 00:00:04.43\00:00:09.27 [music playing] 00:00:09.77\00:00:10.54 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Very few places in America 00:00:10.91\00:00:12.57 have such amazing sights for exploring volcanic history 00:00:12.67\00:00:15.31 as the Pacific Northwest. 00:00:15.41\00:00:17.51 Dormant, extinct, or active volcanoes 00:00:17.61\00:00:20.05 hold spectacular views. 00:00:20.15\00:00:22.75 Before these volcanoes rose, a foundation of basalt 00:00:22.85\00:00:26.05 was laid across vast areas of Oregon and Washington, 00:00:26.15\00:00:29.72 named the Columbia River Basalt. 00:00:29.82\00:00:32.49 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Up to 15,000 feet 00:00:32.59\00:00:34.30 thick, these layers are best seen in Eastern Oregon, 00:00:34.40\00:00:38.30 where they have been cut by extensive erosion. 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.90 Below and above the basalts are amazing layers 00:00:42.00\00:00:45.21 of ash, sediment, and fossils. 00:00:45.31\00:00:48.11 This area was so spectacular, the government 00:00:48.21\00:00:50.88 declared it a National Monument which we know now 00:00:50.98\00:00:54.12 as the John Day Fossil Beds. 00:00:54.22\00:00:56.05 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Secular 00:00:56.15\00:00:57.42 scientists say the thousands of feet of basalt and ash layers, 00:00:57.52\00:01:00.76 along with the erosion which carved them out, 00:01:00.86\00:01:03.59 took many millions of years to form. 00:01:03.69\00:01:06.56 As we look at the evidence, another explanation 00:01:06.66\00:01:09.36 is possible-- that they were laid down and carved quickly 00:01:09.46\00:01:13.03 as a result of a global Flood. 00:01:13.13\00:01:15.64 Which view is right? 00:01:15.74\00:01:17.31 What really happened here? 00:01:17.41\00:01:18.94 All this and more, next on "Awesome Science." 00:01:19.04\00:01:22.08 [music playing] 00:01:22.18\00:01:27.05 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): "Awesome Science" takes you 00:01:27.15\00:01:29.28 on a field trip to some of the most amazing geologic 00:01:29.38\00:01:32.72 and historical sites around the world, 00:01:32.82\00:01:35.29 where we used the Bible as our history guidebook 00:01:35.39\00:01:37.86 to interpret what we see-- that the Bible can be trusted, 00:01:37.96\00:01:41.83 and empirical science falls in line 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.67 with the Biblical account of Creation, 00:01:43.77\00:01:45.70 the Fall, and the Flood. 00:01:45.80\00:01:48.64 Science-- it's awesome. 00:01:48.74\00:01:50.34 [music playing] 00:01:55.34\00:02:02.32 The state of Oregon is divided into four major areaS-- 00:02:02.42\00:02:06.32 the pristine coastline, rich valleys, Cascade Mountains, 00:02:06.42\00:02:11.49 and the high desert to the east. 00:02:11.59\00:02:14.00 Much of this high desert is covered in basalt thousands 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.97 of feet thick. 00:02:17.07\00:02:18.53 The basalt comes from a series of lava flows originating 00:02:18.63\00:02:21.87 from numerous fissures in Southeastern Washington 00:02:21.97\00:02:24.64 and Northeastern Oregon. 00:02:24.74\00:02:27.04 Some of these lava flows traveled as far 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.78 as the Pacific Ocean, a few hundred miles to the west. 00:02:29.88\00:02:33.65 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Some of the basalt has been removed, 00:02:33.75\00:02:36.22 creating large, open areas thousands of feet 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.12 deep, revealing the underlying layers of sandstone, shales, 00:02:39.22\00:02:43.59 and volcanic deposits. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.56 These sedimentary beds have colorful shades of tan, 00:02:45.66\00:02:48.73 green, and red. 00:02:48.83\00:02:51.70 They often contain fossils, mostly of plants, 00:02:51.80\00:02:54.60 but a few animals, as well. 00:02:54.70\00:02:56.74 Some of the most spectacular sites 00:02:56.84\00:02:59.01 where the sediment was exposed were set aside 00:02:59.11\00:03:01.94 for the National Monument. 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.31 Spread over three different locations, 00:03:03.41\00:03:05.55 over 100,000 visitors come every year 00:03:05.65\00:03:08.68 to experience the outstanding geology and scenery. 00:03:08.78\00:03:12.02 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): This part of Oregon 00:03:12.12\00:03:13.89 was named after John Day, a hunter and trapper who 00:03:13.99\00:03:17.46 came West on an expedition party in 1812. 00:03:17.56\00:03:21.16 He and a partner became separated from their group 00:03:21.26\00:03:23.90 and were raided by Indians. 00:03:24.00\00:03:26.03 This happened where the John Day river enters the Columbia. 00:03:26.13\00:03:29.47 The river, which meanders through Eastern Oregon, 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.01 and the region, were named after him. 00:03:32.11\00:03:34.54 The monument was established in 1975, 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.38 and encompasses around 14,000 acres. 00:03:38.48\00:03:42.18 It's easy to make your way around the monument 00:03:42.28\00:03:44.39 on the highways and gravel roads. 00:03:44.49\00:03:46.59 If you're traveling through this area, 00:03:46.69\00:03:48.32 it's really worth a visit. 00:03:48.42\00:03:50.23 [whoosh] 00:03:50.33\00:03:52.53 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): As you drive through the large canyons 00:03:52.63\00:03:55.13 and valleys, it becomes evident that more than one 00:03:55.23\00:03:58.50 geologic formation can be seen in these steep walls. 00:03:58.60\00:04:02.37 From the top of the canyon all the way to the bottom, 00:04:02.47\00:04:05.41 there are 10 formations. 00:04:05.51\00:04:07.08 The top formation consists of sediments and glacial deposits. 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.91 And the bottom of the canyon contains marble, schists, 00:04:11.01\00:04:14.42 and limestone. 00:04:14.52\00:04:15.75 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): All the formations 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.59 fit into the geologic column. 00:04:17.69\00:04:19.69 Sections of the Holocene, Pleistocene, Pliocene, Miocene, 00:04:19.79\00:04:23.89 Eocene, Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic, and Permian. 00:04:23.99\00:04:29.16 By the way, creationists and evolutionists 00:04:29.26\00:04:32.10 both agree that these rock layers are real, and have 00:04:32.20\00:04:35.07 distinctions. 00:04:35.17\00:04:36.17 Where we disagree is the timing of the laying 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.74 down of these layers. 00:04:38.84\00:04:39.81 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Secular 00:04:39.91\00:04:41.18 geologists use this column to describe 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.81 the long ages of the evolutionary history 00:04:43.91\00:04:46.18 of the earth. 00:04:46.28\00:04:47.92 Each layer has a set of index fossils 00:04:48.02\00:04:50.29 that are used to identify it. 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.29 For the most part, Biblical creationists 00:04:52.39\00:04:55.06 also use the same column. 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.49 But they interpret what they see mainly 00:04:57.59\00:04:59.96 as layers being laid down during the Flood 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.33 in a quick succession, not over long ages. 00:05:02.43\00:05:05.57 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Arguably, there 00:05:05.67\00:05:07.27 is no one location on Earth that has the full columns stacked 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.94 one layer on top of the other. 00:05:11.04\00:05:13.58 Scientists piece it together by comparing multiple locations 00:05:13.68\00:05:16.78 around the world. 00:05:16.88\00:05:19.41 There is some debate among creationists 00:05:19.51\00:05:21.62 over whether the Columbia River Basalts were formed 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.25 during or after the Flood. 00:05:24.35\00:05:26.02 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): There Is strong evidence 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.09 that heavy volcanic activity was happening 00:05:28.19\00:05:30.43 during and after the Flood, when the flood water was 00:05:30.53\00:05:33.66 moving into the ocean basins, as the earth 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.73 came to a balance point. 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.07 One reason why the scientists think 00:05:39.17\00:05:41.00 that the basalt may have formed after the flood waters moved 00:05:41.10\00:05:44.24 off the continents is that when magma 00:05:44.34\00:05:46.17 comes to the surface at the bottom of the ocean, 00:05:46.27\00:05:48.64 it has a tendency to form pillows. 00:05:48.74\00:05:51.58 Yet most of the basalt here has not formed into pillows. 00:05:51.68\00:05:54.42 But more recent observations have been made in Hawaii 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.59 where large amounts of magma have quickly developed 00:06:00.69\00:06:03.22 underwater without pillowing. 00:06:03.32\00:06:06.09 So we can't be absolutely certain, 00:06:06.19\00:06:08.60 but we still have a fairly narrow window, much less 00:06:08.70\00:06:11.73 than the millions of years in the evolutionary view. 00:06:11.83\00:06:15.30 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): The pillowing 00:06:15.40\00:06:16.94 features seem to be related to the quantity and quickness 00:06:17.04\00:06:20.58 at which the magma exits to the surface. 00:06:20.68\00:06:23.75 With the massive quantity of basalt 00:06:23.85\00:06:25.75 here, we can be fairly certain that the earth was putting out 00:06:25.85\00:06:29.18 very large amounts of magma at the end stages of the Flood. 00:06:29.28\00:06:33.42 The other challenge with this lava being post-Flood 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.73 is the fact that of massive amounts of erosion 00:06:36.83\00:06:39.26 that occurred. 00:06:39.36\00:06:40.23 The Flood is the only logical event 00:06:40.33\00:06:42.63 with the means of carving this basalt thousands of feet deep. 00:06:42.73\00:06:46.10 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): There is evidence 00:06:46.20\00:06:47.90 that we can interpret as several large lakes that existed 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.21 in the west after the Flood. 00:06:51.31\00:06:53.54 These lakes eventually breached, and the escaping water 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.71 carved the landscape as it made its way to the ocean. 00:06:56.81\00:07:00.92 Glacial Lake Missoula and Lake Bonneville 00:07:01.02\00:07:03.95 are just two examples. 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.15 Yet there just isn't enough evidence 00:07:06.25\00:07:08.69 that can be interpreted as a local flood event in Oregon. 00:07:08.79\00:07:13.29 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): As you enter the John Day river 00:07:13.40\00:07:15.63 valley, near the small village of Antelope, 00:07:15.73\00:07:19.07 it's easy to see the lines of contact between lava beds. 00:07:19.17\00:07:23.07 They're straight and level. 00:07:23.17\00:07:25.74 This evidence is consistent with the short period of time 00:07:25.84\00:07:28.81 between one flow and the next. 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.35 And the whole sequence accumulated very quickly. 00:07:31.45\00:07:35.32 There was not hundreds of thousands 00:07:35.42\00:07:37.19 of years between flows. 00:07:37.29\00:07:39.29 Otherwise, we'd see erosion. 00:07:39.39\00:07:42.49 There is also a large amount of sliding and slumping 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.76 in the layers, so the John Day beds 00:07:45.86\00:07:48.56 were not thoroughly consolidated when 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.63 formed, but were still soft or plastic when 00:07:50.73\00:07:53.74 the bending action happened. 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.60 Then they hardened. 00:07:55.70\00:07:57.77 Many locations around the world have 00:07:57.87\00:08:00.14 had extensive volcanic activity in the past. 00:08:00.24\00:08:03.71 This includes huge magma deposits and massive layers 00:08:03.81\00:08:07.75 of ash, such as in the Southwest at Petrified Forest National 00:08:07.85\00:08:11.59 Park. 00:08:11.69\00:08:12.75 During the Flood, massive tectonic activity 00:08:12.85\00:08:15.66 was happening below the waters to release this magma and ash. 00:08:15.76\00:08:19.46 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): When the highway 00:08:19.56\00:08:21.20 was built along the John Day River, 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.70 several hillsides were exposed, showing conglomerate layers. 00:08:23.80\00:08:28.34 Below the conglomerate layer are sandstones, shales, and ash 00:08:28.44\00:08:32.21 deposits. 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.04 All of these layers are sedimentary, 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.91 meaning they were deposited in water. 00:08:36.01\00:08:39.01 Shales are usually formed by sand, pressure, and heat. 00:08:39.11\00:08:43.18 The heat fuses the particles of sand and other materials 00:08:43.28\00:08:46.45 together into a shale. 00:08:46.55\00:08:49.92 There was plenty of heat present below the surface of the flood 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.86 waters to help form the shales, along 00:08:52.96\00:08:55.16 with the volcanic activity to generate the ash layers. 00:08:55.26\00:08:59.67 The Bible tells us that God sent the Flood to destroy 00:08:59.77\00:09:02.84 all land-dwelling, air-breathing life, 00:09:02.94\00:09:05.91 except for Noah, his family, and the animals on the Ark. 00:09:06.01\00:09:09.61 None of these types of animals or people 00:09:09.71\00:09:12.68 could have survived what was happening as the flood waters 00:09:12.78\00:09:15.42 covered the entire earth. 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.32 God's destruction was complete, just as He said it would be. 00:09:17.42\00:09:21.52 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): This is exactly what we 00:09:21.62\00:09:23.56 see from the geologic record. 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.53 The destruction was massive and worldwide. 00:09:26.63\00:09:29.50 [whoosh] 00:09:29.60\00:09:30.90 [hum] 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.23 [zap] 00:09:33.34\00:09:34.24 Thousands of cubic miles of material 00:09:34.34\00:09:36.84 have been removed from this area. 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.84 Where did it go? 00:09:38.94\00:09:40.08 There is no significant accumulation of sediment 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.74 anywhere in between here and the Pacific Ocean. 00:09:42.84\00:09:47.75 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): For hundreds of miles up and down 00:09:47.85\00:09:50.22 this valley, the excavation of the Columbia River 00:09:50.32\00:09:53.32 Basalt and other layers has been enormous. 00:09:53.42\00:09:57.83 Water erosion has amazing properties, 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.76 and can cut through just about any substance. 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.33 In 1982, at Mount St. Helens, a mudflow 00:10:04.43\00:10:07.84 caused by immense amounts of water came out of the crater 00:10:07.94\00:10:11.11 and carved canyons hundreds of feet thick, 00:10:11.21\00:10:14.51 including a lava flow thought to be 500 years old. 00:10:14.61\00:10:18.81 After day 150 of the Flood, the Bible 00:10:18.91\00:10:22.02 tells us that the waters were, indeed, receding. 00:10:22.12\00:10:24.92 Below the surface, the remaining movements 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.12 of the continents and changes of elevation were happening. 00:10:27.22\00:10:30.73 Mountains were being pushed up. 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.96 Valleys were being formed. 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.46 And what is now the Pacific Ocean was sinking lower. 00:10:34.56\00:10:38.23 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): These massive volcanic changes 00:10:38.33\00:10:40.57 started moving the water off the continents 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.50 and into the ocean basins. 00:10:42.60\00:10:45.61 During this time, giant sheet erosion 00:10:45.71\00:10:48.11 was moving sediments off the top layers 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.91 and dumping them on the continental shelves 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.08 in the ocean. 00:10:53.18\00:10:56.15 As the water decreased, it began to carve canyons and gaps 00:10:56.25\00:11:00.16 in the mountain chains and plateaus. 00:11:00.26\00:11:03.59 It is believed that this massive erosional event 00:11:03.69\00:11:06.26 was responsible for carving the John Day Fossil Beds. 00:11:06.36\00:11:10.03 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): The absence 00:11:10.13\00:11:11.57 of significant accumulations of erosional debris 00:11:11.67\00:11:14.37 and sedimentary deposits between here 00:11:14.47\00:11:16.67 and the ocean suggest that most of the material eroded 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.34 from these great canyons was dumped into the Pacific Ocean. 00:11:20.44\00:11:24.41 The Genesis Flood could provide sufficient water 00:11:24.51\00:11:27.42 to accomplish this task quickly. 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.02 [whoosh] 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.45 We're here behind Fossil High School, 00:11:32.59\00:11:34.42 where collecting is permitted. 00:11:34.52\00:11:36.56 Be sure to have a hammer and a geology chisel. 00:11:36.66\00:11:40.16 Let's go. 00:11:40.26\00:11:40.90 This rock is white volcanic ash. 00:11:43.73\00:11:47.20 This is the area that we can dig in. 00:11:47.30\00:11:49.17 Let's go look for some. 00:11:49.27\00:11:50.24 [music playing] 00:11:50.34\00:11:54.58 Oh, wow. 00:11:54.68\00:11:55.64 What's interesting about these leaves 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.48 is the edges aren't bent, which means 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.38 that they were stripped off their plant 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.22 and buried in the mud flow within seconds. 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.69 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): This find is significant, 00:12:03.79\00:12:05.82 because it shows catastrophe was involved in making this fossil. 00:12:05.92\00:12:09.32 If this leaf had fallen from a tree 00:12:09.42\00:12:11.49 and lied on the ground for a while, 00:12:11.59\00:12:13.19 it would have first withered, and the edges 00:12:13.29\00:12:15.20 would have been bent. 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.56 Then it would have eventually decomposed. 00:12:16.67\00:12:19.47 This leaf didn't even get a chance 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.14 to wither before it was buried. 00:12:21.24\00:12:23.34 Oh. 00:12:23.44\00:12:25.37 Here's another one. 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.54 Oh. 00:12:27.64\00:12:28.91 There's another one. 00:12:29.01\00:12:30.81 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): At the beginning stages of the Flood, 00:12:30.91\00:12:33.45 the fountains of the great deep were unleashed 00:12:33.55\00:12:35.85 and it rained for 40 days and nights. 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.25 [lightning crash] 00:12:38.35\00:12:39.59 Water quickly flooded the earth, wiping out the vegetation 00:12:39.69\00:12:42.26 quickly, stripping leaves from trees as the waters came. 00:12:42.36\00:12:46.80 The fountains of the great deep also 00:12:46.90\00:12:48.90 included volcanic activity, which 00:12:49.00\00:12:51.43 would have spewed ash into the water 00:12:51.53\00:12:53.27 and dropped quickly as sediments, 00:12:53.37\00:12:54.97 burying the leaves and other small animals. 00:12:55.07\00:12:58.54 It is quickly evident why this is 00:12:58.64\00:13:00.64 called Fossil Beds, because the fossils are everywhere. 00:13:00.74\00:13:04.95 What makes it even more remarkable 00:13:05.05\00:13:06.98 is that these leaf impressions were made by vegetation 00:13:07.08\00:13:10.09 which existed before the Flood. 00:13:10.19\00:13:12.95 It is a reminder that God's judgment was swift and sure. 00:13:13.05\00:13:17.73 Everything died in that catastrophe, 00:13:17.83\00:13:19.83 except for those on the ark. 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.26 [whoosh] 00:13:22.36\00:13:23.70 [hum] 00:13:23.80\00:13:25.60 [zap] 00:13:25.70\00:13:27.04 These are the Palisades. 00:13:27.14\00:13:28.87 They're composed of conglomerates, 00:13:28.97\00:13:30.67 with angular rocks and boulders. 00:13:30.77\00:13:34.08 The Palisades are 18 miles west of Fossil High School, 00:13:34.18\00:13:38.21 and a part of the Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds. 00:13:38.31\00:13:42.75 They are thought, by secular scientists, 00:13:42.85\00:13:44.49 to have formed 44 million years ago in a series of volcanic mud 00:13:44.59\00:13:48.29 flows called lahars. 00:13:48.39\00:13:50.79 We've seen lahars happen, and we 00:13:50.89\00:13:53.13 have evidence of past lahars, most recently when 00:13:53.23\00:13:56.33 Mount St. Helens erupted. 00:13:56.43\00:13:57.80 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Secular 00:13:57.90\00:13:59.17 scientists claim that this area was vastly different at one 00:13:59.27\00:14:02.44 time, that this high desert used to get 100 inches of rain 00:14:02.54\00:14:06.47 every year and was surrounded by volcanoes 00:14:06.57\00:14:09.38 in a near-tropical jungle rain forest. 00:14:09.48\00:14:12.91 They say that this area was a near-tropical rain forest 00:14:13.01\00:14:17.19 because most of the fossil leaves in the rocks 00:14:17.29\00:14:19.55 came from a rain forest environment. 00:14:19.65\00:14:22.66 Modern leaves that are similar are 00:14:22.76\00:14:24.36 found in Central and South America, Southeast 00:14:24.46\00:14:27.96 Asia, and Africa. 00:14:28.03\00:14:31.03 These include palm trees, and avocado. 00:14:31.13\00:14:34.47 But strong [? bedding ?] could indicate 00:14:34.57\00:14:37.07 that some of the layers may have been sorted by water, 00:14:37.17\00:14:39.91 or dropped from the air into the water. 00:14:40.01\00:14:43.58 There's no question about these cliffs being formed with water. 00:14:43.68\00:14:47.38 Secular scientists say it was made during a volcanic mudflow. 00:14:47.48\00:14:51.09 But there is more evidence to support that it 00:14:51.19\00:14:53.22 was made during the Flood. 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.49 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): After day 150 of the Flood, 00:14:55.59\00:14:57.89 the waters began to recede. 00:14:57.99\00:15:00.63 As the Rockies were coming up, the earth's crust, 00:15:00.73\00:15:03.90 near Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, 00:15:04.00\00:15:06.23 developed deep cracks, opening up 00:15:06.33\00:15:08.70 fissures for large amounts of magma to come to the surface, 00:15:08.80\00:15:13.14 thus allowing for the Columbia River Basalts to form. 00:15:13.24\00:15:17.85 Ash from these eruptions would have 00:15:17.95\00:15:19.51 generated the airfall particles which 00:15:19.61\00:15:21.75 dropped into this formation. 00:15:21.85\00:15:24.35 Leftover vegetation from the beginning of the Flood 00:15:24.45\00:15:26.99 would have mixed in with the ash and created these layers. 00:15:27.09\00:15:31.09 This program is brought to you by 00:15:31.86\00:15:34.46 An organization committed to producing high quality 00:15:36.06\00:15:39.23 After a careful analysis of the geology and 00:16:21.61\00:16:25.25 landscape, the John Day River should have flowed past this 00:16:25.35\00:16:28.35 area and through Keys Creek Pass, just 00:16:28.45\00:16:30.59 to the west, which is about 1,000 feet lower. 00:16:30.69\00:16:34.12 But it went through this area we now call Picture Gorge. 00:16:34.22\00:16:38.16 In geomorphology, we call this a water gap. 00:16:38.26\00:16:42.86 Many water gaps can be seen around the world, where water 00:16:42.96\00:16:46.40 has cut through elevated areas. 00:16:46.50\00:16:48.74 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): The most famous 00:16:48.84\00:16:50.44 is the Grand Canyon in Arizona. 00:16:50.54\00:16:53.27 Long ages can't explain this geologic feature. 00:16:53.38\00:16:57.85 Some secular scientists say that the land was pushed up 00:16:57.95\00:17:01.42 after the gap was made. 00:17:01.52\00:17:03.35 It's pretty easy to see this is not the case. 00:17:03.45\00:17:06.76 If the ground were pushed up, then you'd 00:17:06.86\00:17:08.72 see broken and cracked layers, which we don't see. 00:17:08.82\00:17:12.36 If the ground rose too quickly, it 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.40 would dam up and go the other way. 00:17:14.50\00:17:16.97 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Water gaps are a good indication 00:17:17.07\00:17:19.37 that there was a global Flood. 00:17:19.47\00:17:21.84 Based on observations, the astute researcher 00:17:21.94\00:17:24.57 recognizes that this canyon was formed 00:17:24.67\00:17:26.64 by catastrophic processes. 00:17:26.74\00:17:28.34 But sadly, many reject this truth 00:17:28.44\00:17:30.75 in favor of a secular worldview interpretation. 00:17:30.85\00:17:33.78 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): The Flood 00:17:33.88\00:17:35.25 provides the perfect conditions to carve a canyon, 00:17:35.35\00:17:38.05 like we see at Picture Gorge. 00:17:38.15\00:17:39.65 [whoosh] 00:17:39.75\00:17:41.12 [hum] 00:17:41.22\00:17:43.02 [zap] 00:17:43.12\00:17:44.96 As you come out of Picture Gorge, 00:17:45.06\00:17:46.76 Sheep Rock towers in the middle of the valley. 00:17:46.86\00:17:50.17 It's an impressive sight, because all 00:17:50.27\00:17:52.10 of the layering seen in this mound 00:17:52.20\00:17:53.94 are several hundred feet high. 00:17:54.04\00:17:56.10 The bottom layers are the John Day formation, 00:17:56.20\00:17:58.74 mostly made up of ash. 00:17:58.84\00:18:00.61 The different colors represent the different stages 00:18:00.71\00:18:03.35 of its formation. 00:18:03.45\00:18:04.78 The lower is red. 00:18:04.88\00:18:06.11 The middle is greenish. 00:18:06.21\00:18:07.48 And the upper is a buff colored. 00:18:07.58\00:18:09.42 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Secular 00:18:09.52\00:18:10.79 scientists say the John Day formation was made 00:18:10.89\00:18:13.92 18 to 39 million years ago. 00:18:14.02\00:18:17.03 But, because of the disjointed nature of the mammal skeletons 00:18:17.13\00:18:20.86 and the localized nature and varying thickness 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.43 of these beds, slumping and repositioning 00:18:23.53\00:18:26.07 of these sediments has likely occurred under water. 00:18:26.17\00:18:29.70 Put simply, the flood waters were 00:18:29.80\00:18:31.47 very active and violent while this layer was being deposited. 00:18:31.57\00:18:36.31 What's cool about Sheep Rock is the cap on the top. 00:18:36.41\00:18:39.48 After all that ash layering, the top 00:18:39.58\00:18:41.75 is basalt, from the Picture Gorge Basalts. 00:18:41.85\00:18:44.19 Sheep Rock used to be connected to the other formations 00:18:44.29\00:18:47.62 here in the valley. 00:18:47.72\00:18:48.82 But the receding flood waters carved around it 00:18:48.92\00:18:51.59 and left it standing alone. 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.36 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): After the massive lava 00:18:53.46\00:18:55.33 flows covered the John Day formation, sediments of ash 00:18:55.43\00:18:58.80 were laid down during the late stages of the Flood 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.44 in the Pliocene Miocene mezcal formation. 00:19:01.54\00:19:04.87 Secular scientists say this layer was laid down 00:19:04.97\00:19:07.74 12 to 15 million years ago. 00:19:07.84\00:19:10.25 But what isn't admitted too often 00:19:10.35\00:19:12.25 is that this layer contains diatoms. 00:19:12.35\00:19:15.68 Diatoms are teeny, one-celled plants found in oceans. 00:19:15.78\00:19:20.32 Secular scientists have a tough time 00:19:20.42\00:19:22.22 coming up with a reasonable explanation 00:19:22.32\00:19:24.26 for how this layer formed. 00:19:24.36\00:19:26.26 But the Flood is a perfect model to explain 00:19:26.36\00:19:29.16 how it formed because it involved seas 00:19:29.26\00:19:31.83 where algae lived, and also it involved 00:19:31.93\00:19:34.54 catastrophic deposition. 00:19:34.64\00:19:36.91 In addition, the top of the mezcal formation 00:19:37.01\00:19:39.81 is very smooth, so there was little 00:19:39.91\00:19:42.38 or no erosion between the strata before the next layers 00:19:42.48\00:19:45.81 were laid down. 00:19:45.91\00:19:47.22 If millions of years had passed, there should be some erosion. 00:19:47.32\00:19:50.72 But it just isn't there. 00:19:50.82\00:19:52.75 [whoosh] 00:19:52.85\00:19:53.66 [hum] 00:19:53.76\00:19:55.92 [zap] 00:19:56.02\00:19:57.06 As you go throughout the John Day Fossil Beds, 00:19:57.16\00:19:59.39 there are many signs referring to the mammal fossils. 00:19:59.49\00:20:02.53 In fact, this area is considered one 00:20:02.63\00:20:04.83 of the largest beds for finding mammal fossils in the world. 00:20:04.93\00:20:08.67 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Many of these mammals 00:20:08.77\00:20:10.64 are unusual, because we don't see them today. 00:20:10.74\00:20:13.98 Yet most are related to modern, living mammals. 00:20:14.08\00:20:18.11 A few are extinct, and not related to any living mammals. 00:20:18.21\00:20:23.52 There are several cat-like carnivores, 00:20:23.62\00:20:26.09 over a dozen different members of the dog family, 00:20:26.19\00:20:29.29 horses, several different rhinoceroses, and a number 00:20:29.39\00:20:33.40 of different camels. 00:20:33.50\00:20:35.33 The visitors center and published materials 00:20:35.43\00:20:38.00 will say that these animal fossils had 00:20:38.10\00:20:40.04 evolved from common ancestors. 00:20:40.14\00:20:42.34 Yet, most of these mammals fit into the family categories 00:20:42.44\00:20:45.64 of living mammals. 00:20:45.74\00:20:47.44 The secular idea of evolution says 00:20:47.54\00:20:50.15 that the ancestors of modern animals were "simpler," 00:20:50.25\00:20:53.21 and modern animals are more complex. 00:20:53.31\00:20:55.55 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): If true, 00:20:55.65\00:20:56.95 we should see a chain of animal fossils connecting these links. 00:20:57.05\00:21:01.79 Yet, when we look back through the fossil layers, 00:21:01.89\00:21:04.53 the earlier mammals are just as complex. 00:21:04.63\00:21:08.16 Evidence of evolution from simpler animals is lacking. 00:21:08.26\00:21:12.53 Of course, we expect this, since each kind of animal 00:21:12.63\00:21:15.94 was made on Creation Days 5 and 6, 00:21:16.04\00:21:19.24 with intricate design from an intricate Designer, God. 00:21:19.34\00:21:23.11 [whoosh] 00:21:23.21\00:21:24.61 Here at Goose Rock, a conglomerate layer 00:21:26.21\00:21:28.52 has been exposed. 00:21:28.62\00:21:29.88 Several different rock types intermix here, 00:21:29.98\00:21:33.05 indicating a water deposit. 00:21:33.15\00:21:35.36 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Some of the pebbles and gravel 00:21:35.46\00:21:37.69 in Goose Rock are thought, by secular scientists, 00:21:37.79\00:21:40.40 to have come from the Aldrich Mountains, 00:21:40.50\00:21:42.53 40 miles to the south, because the wash rock is 00:21:42.63\00:21:45.63 the same at both locations. 00:21:45.73\00:21:48.30 But there may be another source of these rocks, 00:21:48.40\00:21:51.04 much farther away. 00:21:51.14\00:21:52.11 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): It's true. 00:21:52.21\00:21:53.61 These exotic, rounded cobbles and boulders 00:21:53.71\00:21:56.28 are found on the south side of the Aldrich Mountains, 00:21:56.38\00:21:59.71 but also in the Ochoco Mountains west of here. 00:21:59.81\00:22:03.39 The Aldrich Mountains may not be the source of these rocks, 00:22:03.49\00:22:07.06 but just a depositing point for a much larger transport 00:22:07.16\00:22:10.46 of stones. 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.33 A large concentration of these same type rocks 00:22:12.43\00:22:15.10 came from the Rockies, several hundred miles away. 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.97 Secular scientists have a very challenging time 00:22:19.07\00:22:22.27 trying to explain how this could have happened. 00:22:22.37\00:22:24.64 But as creationists, it isn't very hard 00:22:24.74\00:22:27.28 when we start from the Bible. 00:22:27.38\00:22:28.78 Massive amounts of water, such as during the global Flood, 00:22:28.88\00:22:32.48 would have been required to move this rock so great a distance. 00:22:32.58\00:22:36.18 [whoosh] 00:22:36.28\00:22:37.55 [hum] 00:22:37.65\00:22:39.39 [zap] 00:22:39.49\00:22:40.42 The John Day Fossil Beds are testament 00:22:40.52\00:22:42.86 to the quick deposition, volcanic activity, and erosion 00:22:42.96\00:22:46.29 of the earth during the year-long Flood, as described 00:22:46.39\00:22:49.90 in the book of Genesis. 00:22:50.00\00:22:50.97 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Researchers 00:22:51.07\00:22:52.50 can recognize that the evidence is 00:22:52.60\00:22:54.60 a good confirmation of the catastrophic processes that 00:22:54.70\00:22:57.74 formed these layers. 00:22:57.84\00:23:00.18 The lack of erosion between layers; 00:23:00.28\00:23:03.04 the massive erosion; and no evolutionary links 00:23:03.14\00:23:07.05 in the fossils; are all evidence for the Biblical record being 00:23:07.15\00:23:10.99 true. 00:23:11.09\00:23:12.59 Here at the monument, evolution and long ages 00:23:12.69\00:23:15.56 are presented as fact on the signs 00:23:15.66\00:23:18.33 and at the visitors center. 00:23:18.43\00:23:20.30 But the arguments just don't match up with the evidence. 00:23:20.40\00:23:24.50 What we see here reminds us that there 00:23:24.60\00:23:26.80 was a judgement for man's rebellion 00:23:26.90\00:23:28.80 against God, as recorded in the Bible. 00:23:28.90\00:23:31.77 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): All the people and animals 00:23:31.87\00:23:33.94 on the land were destroyed, except for one righteous man, 00:23:34.04\00:23:38.28 his family, and all land-dwelling animals 00:23:38.38\00:23:41.05 on the Ark. 00:23:41.15\00:23:42.62 Because of His holiness and justice, 00:23:42.72\00:23:45.42 God promises a coming judgment for man's continued rebellion 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.32 after the Flood. 00:23:49.42\00:23:50.56 And this time, a judgment by fire. 00:23:50.66\00:23:54.20 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): Yet, God in His love and mercy 00:23:54.30\00:23:56.80 has provided a way of escape through repentance 00:23:56.90\00:23:59.80 of sin and faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. 00:23:59.90\00:24:03.17 By His death on the cross, Jesus took the punishment 00:24:03.27\00:24:06.37 for your rebellion. 00:24:06.47\00:24:08.98 To be saved, you must repent of your sin and rebellion, 00:24:09.08\00:24:12.48 and turn your heart towards Him in faith. 00:24:12.58\00:24:15.18 NOAH JUSTICE (VOICEOVER): We don't know the day when 00:24:15.28\00:24:17.35 this next judgment is coming. 00:24:17.45\00:24:20.16 So turn to God today, before it's too late. 00:24:20.26\00:24:25.66 Come visit this amazing landscape 00:24:25.76\00:24:28.50 and see the evidence of catastrophic processes 00:24:28.60\00:24:31.33 during and after the global Flood. 00:24:31.43\00:24:34.64 That's all for now. 00:24:34.74\00:24:35.74 Remember, science-- it's awesome. 00:24:35.84\00:24:38.94 Awesome Science is a video series produced by 00:24:39.74\00:24:42.71
