And comes from the DVD series, "Awesome Science" 00:00:04.33\00:00:09.17 NOAH JUSTICE: Because of its amazing beauty and size, 00:00:10.77\00:00:13.17 Yosemite National Park was one of the first pieces of land 00:00:13.27\00:00:16.71 set aside for the enjoyment of the public in the United 00:00:16.81\00:00:19.71 States. 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.18 The amazing granite cliffs are a part of the Sierra Nevadas, 00:00:21.28\00:00:25.59 a huge rock batholith thought to have been 00:00:25.69\00:00:27.99 formed over millions of years. 00:00:28.09\00:00:30.59 But new evidence helps researchers understand 00:00:30.69\00:00:33.33 how the formation of these mountains 00:00:33.43\00:00:35.03 took just weeks or months. 00:00:35.13\00:00:37.77 In addition, Yosemite Valley is thought 00:00:37.87\00:00:40.17 to have been formed by the Merced River and multiple ice 00:00:40.27\00:00:43.61 ages over long ages. 00:00:43.71\00:00:45.67 Yet this huge valley is actually evidence 00:00:45.77\00:00:48.54 for erosion due to a catastrophe during and right 00:00:48.64\00:00:51.98 after the Flood. 00:00:52.08\00:00:53.48 Secular scientists have over 60 different explanations 00:00:53.58\00:00:56.85 for how many ice ages have been formed. 00:00:56.95\00:00:59.39 But astute researchers recognize that the conditions 00:00:59.49\00:01:02.26 right after the global flood are the best model to explain 00:01:02.36\00:01:05.43 the one major ice age. 00:01:05.53\00:01:08.63 Another amazing geologic feature appears 00:01:08.73\00:01:11.33 just a few hundred miles from Yosemite-- 00:01:11.43\00:01:13.87 the great Zion Canyon in Utah. 00:01:13.97\00:01:16.64 Secular scientists have some major challenges 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.57 explaining how the cliffs were formed and the canyon was cut. 00:01:19.67\00:01:23.28 Huge sandstone layers, steep canyon walls, amazing arches, 00:01:23.38\00:01:28.68 and large hanging valleys are all good evidence 00:01:28.78\00:01:31.59 of a worldwide catastrophe-- all this 00:01:31.69\00:01:34.36 and more next on "Awesome Science." 00:01:34.46\00:01:41.93 "Awesome Science" takes you on a field trip 00:01:42.03\00:01:45.07 to some of the most amazing geologic and historical sites 00:01:45.17\00:01:48.80 around the world where we use the Bible as our history 00:01:48.90\00:01:51.97 guidebook to interpret what we see, 00:01:52.07\00:01:54.51 that the Bible can be trusted. 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.78 And empirical science falls in line 00:01:56.88\00:01:58.61 with the Biblical account of Creation, 00:01:58.71\00:02:00.72 the Fall, and the Flood. 00:02:00.82\00:02:03.65 Science, it's awesome. 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.35 Yosemite is breathtaking from the minute 00:02:17.93\00:02:20.47 you enter her Cathedral granite peaks 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.44 rising several thousand feet above the valley floor. 00:02:22.54\00:02:26.14 It's no wonder author and champion 00:02:26.24\00:02:28.41 for the national parks, John Muir, 00:02:28.51\00:02:30.35 said no temple made with human hands 00:02:30.45\00:02:32.61 can compare with Yosemite, where God's attributes and glory is 00:02:32.71\00:02:37.95 revealed. 00:02:38.05\00:02:39.72 Muir believed that the best place 00:02:39.82\00:02:41.72 to discover the true attributes of God was in nature 00:02:41.82\00:02:45.19 and that God is always active in the creation of life, 00:02:45.29\00:02:48.43 and thereby has continued to keep 00:02:48.53\00:02:50.73 the natural order of the world. 00:02:50.83\00:02:53.77 About the size of Rhode Island, Yosemite National Park 00:02:53.87\00:02:57.04 covers 1,190 square miles and is full of valleys, giant cliffs, 00:02:57.14\00:03:03.01 waterfalls, alpine lakes, and even active glaciers, 00:03:03.11\00:03:07.55 with its highest point being over 13,000 feet. 00:03:07.65\00:03:12.19 Yosemite was first set aside by President Abraham Lincoln 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.86 on June 30, 1864, and given to the state of California 00:03:15.96\00:03:20.13 to oversee. 00:03:20.23\00:03:21.56 It was the inspiration for the first national park, 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.67 Yellowstone. 00:03:24.77\00:03:25.17 When the National Park Service was organized in 1916, 00:03:27.84\00:03:31.37 Yosemite was adopted in as a national park. 00:03:31.47\00:03:35.08 It is visited by over 3.7 million people, 00:03:35.18\00:03:39.08 mostly in the seven square mile area of Yosemite Valley. 00:03:39.18\00:03:42.95 From the valley floor, giant granite cliffs 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.55 goes straight up and have names such as Half Dome, El Capitan, 00:03:45.65\00:03:49.89 and Sentinel Dome. 00:03:49.99\00:03:51.76 As one looks around, questions are 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.60 formed about this amazing granite rock 00:03:53.70\00:03:55.80 and how it was carved in such a deep valley. 00:03:55.90\00:03:59.10 The granite is thought by secular scientists 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.67 to have begun forming over 210 million years ago. 00:04:01.77\00:04:06.94 After the formation of the Sierras, 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.91 the valley was mostly cut by the Merced River 00:04:09.01\00:04:12.01 and finished off by large glaciers. 00:04:12.11\00:04:14.78 Obviously, these time scales don't match up 00:04:14.88\00:04:17.49 with the Biblical account of a few thousand years. 00:04:17.59\00:04:20.66 Evidence has come to light to help explain 00:04:20.76\00:04:23.06 the quick formation of the granites 00:04:23.16\00:04:24.69 during the Flood of Genesis, as well 00:04:24.79\00:04:27.03 as a model for rapid formation of the massive glaciers 00:04:27.13\00:04:30.53 and ice sheets from the ice age not long after the Flood. 00:04:30.63\00:04:34.47 What evidence? 00:04:34.57\00:04:35.60 I'm glad you asked. 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.44 That's why a group of scientists called the RATE group who 00:04:38.31\00:04:41.88 believe in the Biblical account of creation, 00:04:41.98\00:04:44.28 a young Earth, and a global flood, 00:04:44.38\00:04:46.58 challenged this secular idea of long ages 00:04:46.68\00:04:49.55 by looking deeper into the rocks to develop 00:04:49.65\00:04:51.95 a different and better model. 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.92 To date volcanic rocks when they cool, 00:04:55.02\00:04:57.49 a method called a radioisotope dating is used. 00:04:57.59\00:05:01.26 This type of dating analyzes the radioactive elements 00:05:01.36\00:05:04.47 in the rocks. 00:05:04.57\00:05:05.70 Each radioactive material called parent elements 00:05:05.80\00:05:08.54 decays into other elements called daughter elements. 00:05:08.64\00:05:12.17 For example, uranium-238, the radioactive parent element 00:05:12.27\00:05:16.54 eventually decays into the stable daughter 00:05:16.64\00:05:18.95 element of lead. 00:05:19.05\00:05:20.52 Over 4.468 billion years, half of uranium atoms in a rock 00:05:20.62\00:05:25.42 would turn to lead. 00:05:25.52\00:05:26.76 So it is called a half-life. 00:05:26.86\00:05:28.86 It has been demonstrated by observation 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.09 that different radioactive elements decay 00:05:31.19\00:05:33.16 at different rates. 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.73 Some have half lives of seconds. 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.30 Others decay much more slowly. 00:05:37.40\00:05:39.53 But of course, no one has watched Uranium-238 00:05:39.63\00:05:42.67 for four billion years. 00:05:42.77\00:05:44.24 That would be a very boring job. 00:05:44.34\00:05:46.24 So the rate is calculated from the small sample of time. 00:05:46.34\00:05:49.94 You can't measure a radiometric date 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.21 like you can measure the mass of a rock. 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.28 You have to calculate it. 00:05:54.38\00:05:55.88 And that calculation only gives you the right date 00:05:55.98\00:05:58.42 if the assumptions are true. 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.76 There are three basic assumptions 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.46 used when calculating a radiometric date. 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.83 The first assumption is that there 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.36 was none of the daughter element in the rock to begin with. 00:06:07.46\00:06:10.97 For example, you have to assume that no lead was in the rock 00:06:11.07\00:06:14.64 when it was formed to use the uranium-lead dating method. 00:06:14.74\00:06:18.04 But how would a scientist know this? 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.21 They can't. 00:06:20.31\00:06:21.31 That's why it's a faulty assumption. 00:06:21.41\00:06:24.15 The second assumption is that the radioactive element 00:06:24.25\00:06:26.82 decays at a constant rate. 00:06:26.92\00:06:28.45 The rate was not faster or slower in the past. 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.99 That is the uniformitarianism concept again. 00:06:32.09\00:06:35.39 Yet, the Bible teaches something much different. 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.73 The Earth has gone through a huge catastrophe, 00:06:37.83\00:06:40.83 the global flood. 00:06:40.93\00:06:43.10 In addition, this second assumption 00:06:43.20\00:06:44.93 does not take into account heat, or pressure, or other forces 00:06:45.03\00:06:49.07 that might have had an influence in the decay 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.21 rate of an element. 00:06:51.31\00:06:52.64 In some instances, we can observe radioactive decay rates 00:06:52.74\00:06:55.78 changing drastically. 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.81 The third assumption is that the elements in the rock 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.38 operated in a closed system. 00:07:00.48\00:07:03.08 In other words, there were no outside influences 00:07:03.18\00:07:06.05 on the parent or daughter elements, no addition 00:07:06.15\00:07:09.29 or removal of uranium or lead, which 00:07:09.39\00:07:12.43 is a big assumption considering that the rock has supposed 00:07:12.53\00:07:15.86 to have been around for millions of years. 00:07:15.96\00:07:19.20 If there was any contamination, then 00:07:19.30\00:07:21.57 all bets are off on having a good sample 00:07:21.67\00:07:23.94 to calculate the age of the rock. 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.37 For those who believe in long ages, 00:07:26.47\00:07:28.58 these assumptions are critical to their beliefs. 00:07:28.68\00:07:31.25 While there are methods to get around 00:07:31.35\00:07:32.95 some of these assumptions in some cases, 00:07:33.05\00:07:35.75 any breakdown in these assumptions 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.92 would lead to a total meltdown of the arguments 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.56 based on radiometric dating. 00:07:40.66\00:07:43.06 The RATE group decided to take a fresh look at this subject 00:07:43.16\00:07:46.63 and see what they could learn without being 00:07:46.73\00:07:48.96 forced to stick to the uniformitarian assumptions. 00:07:49.06\00:07:52.53 They wanted to know if the rate of decay 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.80 had been different in the past due to catastrophic 00:07:54.90\00:07:57.51 geologic processes during the global flood. 00:07:57.61\00:08:00.94 They also looked at the issue of the daughter elements 00:08:01.04\00:08:03.78 to see if they were in the rocks from the beginning, which 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.82 would throw a monkey wrench in the calculations 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.42 for the dating of these rocks. 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.99 Third, they intentionally looked for evidence 00:08:12.09\00:08:14.72 that radioactive processes had produced accelerated decay. 00:08:14.82\00:08:18.66 They begin their research by collecting over 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.83 1,000 rock samples from all over the world, 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.90 including Yosemite Valley. 00:08:24.00\00:08:26.27 When some radioactive elements decay, 00:08:26.37\00:08:28.54 in addition to producing the daughter element, 00:08:28.64\00:08:31.01 alpha particles are thrown off from the parent 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.54 as it changes into the new element, such as polonium-210, 00:08:33.64\00:08:37.91 also known as radium F. 00:08:38.01\00:08:40.22 We can see this decay in the form of radiohalos. 00:08:40.32\00:08:44.52 Radiohalos are the damage left by the emission of some 00:08:44.62\00:08:47.76 of these alpha particles captured 00:08:47.86\00:08:49.39 in the surrounding rock during the decay 00:08:49.49\00:08:51.29 series of uranium-238. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.73 As I said, the half-life of uranium-238 00:08:53.83\00:08:57.30 is supposed to be 4.468 billion years to arrive at lead. 00:08:57.40\00:09:02.20 But the different types of polonium 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.27 only have half-lives of 164 seconds, 3.1 minutes, 00:09:04.37\00:09:09.08 and 138 days. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.48 If the crystals in the granite rocks 00:09:11.58\00:09:13.62 cooled slowly over millions of years or even one year, 00:09:13.72\00:09:17.35 the radiohalos from the polonium would 00:09:17.45\00:09:19.52 have reached the end of their life and disappeared. 00:09:19.62\00:09:22.49 When the rocks from Yosemite were studied, 00:09:22.59\00:09:25.09 the most bizarre thing was discovered. 00:09:25.19\00:09:27.66 Polonium halos were found frozen in the rocks. 00:09:27.76\00:09:31.43 The fact that we see any radiohalos from polonium 00:09:31.53\00:09:34.80 is good evidence that these rocks 00:09:34.90\00:09:36.64 cooled very, very quickly, fast enough 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.51 to capture what the damage had done to the crystals 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.18 before the polonium all turned to lead. 00:09:42.28\00:09:45.51 It is believed by secular scientists 00:09:45.61\00:09:47.65 that the granite in the Sierra Nevada 00:09:47.75\00:09:49.65 was formed slowly over millions of years. 00:09:49.75\00:09:52.45 But the fact that the polonium radiohalos are found especially 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.49 in abundance in all the granitic rock layers 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.53 means something much different than slow, gradual processes. 00:09:59.63\00:10:03.93 With the right conditions during the Flood, 00:10:04.03\00:10:06.37 the entire pluton, or mass of igneous rock, 00:10:06.47\00:10:09.44 could have formed very quickly, maybe even 00:10:09.54\00:10:11.57 within a couple of weeks. 00:10:11.67\00:10:13.11 This massive catastrophic process 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.68 would have contributed greatly to the accelerated decay rate. 00:10:15.78\00:10:19.71 As the flood waters receded, due to the continents rising 00:10:19.81\00:10:23.05 and the sea floor sinking, the Sierras 00:10:23.15\00:10:25.29 were uplifted to their current position, 00:10:25.39\00:10:27.26 likely in a matter of months. 00:10:27.36\00:10:29.52 The flood was quick and catastrophic, 00:10:29.62\00:10:32.19 just as the Bible says. 00:10:32.29\00:10:33.83 It didn't take millions and billions of years 00:10:33.93\00:10:36.53 to form these rocks that we see today. 00:10:36.63\00:10:38.60 Science, it's awesome. 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.44 As you enter through Yosemite Valley, 00:10:46.34\00:10:48.71 the granite cliffs rising above 3,000 feet 00:10:48.81\00:10:52.15 impress the viewer with the grandeur of God. 00:10:52.25\00:10:56.58 From Glacier Point, a visitor can view Yosemite Valley below. 00:10:56.69\00:11:00.66 Without question, something big cut this valley. 00:11:00.76\00:11:04.69 Secular scientists claim that as the mountains were being pushed 00:11:04.79\00:11:07.66 up over millions of years, the Merced River 00:11:07.76\00:11:10.40 flowed a little bit faster and cut this valley. 00:11:10.50\00:11:13.44 Yet, it's hard to imagine this little river cutting 00:11:13.54\00:11:16.00 this huge valley. 00:11:16.10\00:11:17.91 It just doesn't make sense based on what 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.18 we know about the principles of erosion. 00:11:20.28\00:11:22.74 There's just not enough water flow. 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.65 In addition, what source was behind the Merced River 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.85 to allow it to erode this much land? 00:11:28.95\00:11:31.35 It just doesn't exist, except in the case 00:11:31.45\00:11:34.22 of a massive catastrophe, such as the global flood. 00:11:34.32\00:11:38.49 In the 1800s, John Muir explored the park 00:11:38.59\00:11:41.56 and was the first to hypothesize glaciers 00:11:41.66\00:11:43.87 were involved in eroding Yosemite. 00:11:43.97\00:11:46.77 It's true that glaciers cut and smooth 00:11:46.87\00:11:48.94 a valley that already exists. 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.84 But a valley as big as Yosemite requires something much larger, 00:11:50.94\00:11:55.14 like a global flood. 00:11:55.24\00:11:57.95 Near the end of the Flood, the continents 00:11:58.05\00:12:00.15 were beginning to rise. 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.85 Mountain chains were being pushed up. 00:12:01.95\00:12:04.05 And the valleys were being formed. 00:12:04.15\00:12:06.25 This catastrophic activity that was moving continents 00:12:06.35\00:12:09.39 subsequently caused the waters to accumulate 00:12:09.49\00:12:11.99 in the new ocean basins. 00:12:12.09\00:12:13.63 And huge sheet erosion planed off the new top layers 00:12:13.73\00:12:16.73 of the Earth. 00:12:16.83\00:12:17.90 As there was less water flowing towards the ocean, 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.67 the erosion continued as the water flowed in channels, 00:12:20.77\00:12:24.47 cutting giant canyons, water gaps, and valleys. 00:12:24.57\00:12:29.28 Evidence for this massive water erosion 00:12:29.38\00:12:31.95 is everywhere on this Earth, including Yosemite Valley. 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.28 But the erosion of this famous valley wasn't over yet. 00:12:35.38\00:12:39.39 The Great Ice Age was to come next. 00:12:39.49\00:12:41.76 And it also left its marks. 00:12:41.86\00:12:43.93 Yosemite is a testament to the glory of God. 00:12:44.43\00:12:47.50 But it's so much more than that. 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.50 It's a display of quick and catastrophic processes 00:12:49.60\00:12:52.90 in its formation and erosion during and after the Flood. 00:12:53.00\00:12:57.54 From the radiohalos to the quick formation of the Ice 00:12:57.64\00:13:00.44 Age after the Flood that affected the park, 00:13:00.54\00:13:03.01 the Bible gives us the best starting point 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.35 to explain the evidence. 00:13:05.45\00:13:07.38 It didn't take millions of years to form, 00:13:07.48\00:13:09.85 just big events in a short time period. 00:13:09.95\00:13:12.35 When we use God and His Word as our history guidebook, 00:13:12.45\00:13:16.22 all that we see in nature starts to make sense. 00:13:16.32\00:13:19.49 If a secular worldview, which is based on man's opinions, 00:13:19.59\00:13:22.90 is used, the explanations of nature will never quite fit. 00:13:23.00\00:13:27.14 That's why the there is no agreement on how the Ice 00:13:27.24\00:13:30.14 Age developed, because none of their ideas 00:13:30.24\00:13:32.64 involved the catastrophic processes as 00:13:32.74\00:13:35.31 described in the Bible. 00:13:35.41\00:13:37.48 When you build a puzzle, you build the outside edge first. 00:13:37.58\00:13:40.75 Then you work to fit in the middle pieces. 00:13:40.85\00:13:43.22 In much the same way, we use the Bible as our frame, 00:13:43.32\00:13:46.25 then begin to fit the pieces inside together. 00:13:46.35\00:13:49.29 In the end, it all connects within a coherent and Biblical 00:13:49.39\00:13:52.86 worldview. 00:13:52.96\00:13:54.13 Sure, we don't know about all the details 00:13:54.23\00:13:56.70 of this world we live in or its past. 00:13:56.80\00:13:59.47 But we can discover and learn about God's world 00:13:59.57\00:14:02.87 using His Word. 00:14:02.97\00:14:04.17 That means working to understand every aspect of this world 00:14:04.27\00:14:08.14 and how it works and how it is explained best 00:14:08.24\00:14:11.81 by a Biblical worldview. 00:14:11.91\00:14:13.28 Science, it's awesome. 00:14:13.38\00:14:15.52 This program is brought to you by Standing over 2,000 feet, these are 00:15:08.80\00:15:11.31 some of the highest sandstone cliffs in the world. 00:15:11.41\00:15:14.78 The criss-crossing patterns are due to the layers being 00:15:14.88\00:15:17.61 deposited in flowing water. 00:15:17.71\00:15:19.98 This valley has clear signs of the sandstone being formed 00:15:20.08\00:15:23.49 by water, then eroded by water. 00:15:23.59\00:15:26.69 Zion includes nine separate geologic formations thought 00:15:26.79\00:15:30.69 by secular scientists to cover 150 million years of Earth's 00:15:30.79\00:15:34.93 history, yet those who believe in long ages 00:15:35.00\00:15:38.47 have some major challenges when trying 00:15:38.57\00:15:40.57 to explain what we see at Zion, because a proper understanding 00:15:40.67\00:15:44.37 of the evidence doesn't mesh with their story. 00:15:44.47\00:15:47.04 Instead, astute researchers recognize 00:15:47.14\00:15:49.81 the catastrophic formation of the layers 00:15:49.91\00:15:52.15 and the cutting of this enormous canyon. 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.05 It wasn't millions of years, but perhaps just weeks. 00:15:54.15\00:15:58.99 Zion is a towering example of geologic action 00:15:59.09\00:16:02.92 due to the catastrophic flood action, the Biblical flood 00:16:03.02\00:16:06.06 of Noah's day. 00:16:06.16\00:16:06.93 As one meanders through the giant canyons, 00:16:10.63\00:16:13.50 the walls of sandstone are enormous. 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.77 The largest layer is the Navajo Sandstone, which 00:16:16.87\00:16:19.77 is up to 2,200 feet thick. 00:16:19.87\00:16:23.91 This layer is known to cover 140,000 square miles 00:16:24.01\00:16:28.42 of the southwest. 00:16:28.52\00:16:29.68 The source of these sand grains can 00:16:29.78\00:16:31.35 be traced to the northern Appalachians 00:16:31.45\00:16:33.72 over 1,000 miles away. 00:16:33.82\00:16:36.93 Secular scientists have suggested several ideas 00:16:37.03\00:16:40.30 on how this sand moved across the continent. 00:16:40.40\00:16:43.50 One idea is that an ancient river transported them 00:16:43.60\00:16:46.63 from the northeast to the southwest, 00:16:46.74\00:16:49.34 but no evidence exists for this grand waterway. 00:16:49.44\00:16:53.48 Another idea is that they were blown across by the wind. 00:16:53.58\00:16:57.31 But how did they miss being deposited in the Midwest 00:16:57.41\00:17:00.25 as well? 00:17:00.35\00:17:01.45 When the details surface, this idea 00:17:01.55\00:17:03.69 is dashed and broken against a big wall. 00:17:03.79\00:17:07.12 Without a global flood model, secular scientists 00:17:07.22\00:17:10.16 have a big challenge trying to explain 00:17:10.26\00:17:12.49 how these sand grains got here. 00:17:12.59\00:17:14.83 But with worldwide catastrophic conditions during the Flood, 00:17:14.93\00:17:18.73 the sandstones are easily explained. 00:17:18.83\00:17:21.60 When sand is blown, the backside of a dune 00:17:21.70\00:17:24.37 is typically more than 30 degrees. 00:17:24.47\00:17:26.34 We also know that if water moves sand, the backside of the dune 00:17:29.11\00:17:32.75 is less than 30 degrees. 00:17:32.85\00:17:36.02 This can be observed around the world 00:17:36.12\00:17:37.99 and can be tested in the lab. 00:17:38.09\00:17:40.76 Most of the cross-beds in the Navajo Sandstone 00:17:40.86\00:17:43.69 have angles less than 30 degrees, 00:17:43.79\00:17:45.93 which we can deduce that they were moved by water. 00:17:46.03\00:17:49.33 Only one event in Earth's history would have the water 00:17:49.43\00:17:52.60 and speed to move 140,000 square miles of sand. 00:17:52.70\00:17:57.21 That event was the global flood of Noah's day. 00:17:57.31\00:18:00.28 When you tour through Zion Canyon, 00:18:02.98\00:18:05.05 one question keeps on coming to mind. 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.62 How was it cut? 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.78 Whatever the process was, it had to work its way 00:18:09.88\00:18:12.79 through thousands of feet of sediment. 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.19 Secular scientists attribute the Zion's erosion 00:18:15.29\00:18:18.06 over millions of years to the Virgin River, 00:18:18.16\00:18:20.46 which flows through the bottom of the canyon. 00:18:20.56\00:18:23.43 Just a casual glance at the Virgin River 00:18:23.53\00:18:26.00 shows that it flows too gradually 00:18:26.10\00:18:28.04 to have caused this much erosion. 00:18:28.14\00:18:31.74 The river doesn't even reach the canyon walls. 00:18:31.84\00:18:35.54 What is more, as one looks deeper 00:18:35.64\00:18:37.75 into the canyon's features, it becomes evident 00:18:37.85\00:18:40.32 that this canyon was cut in a very short period of time, 00:18:40.42\00:18:43.55 just days or hours. 00:18:43.65\00:18:45.35 How? 00:18:45.45\00:18:46.15 Let's look a little closer. 00:18:46.25\00:18:47.82 One of the strongest evidences researchers 00:18:47.92\00:18:50.49 use for a young cut canyon is how steep the canyon walls are. 00:18:50.59\00:18:54.93 If the canyon was formed over a long period, 00:18:55.03\00:18:57.80 gravity, erosion, and other natural forces 00:18:57.90\00:19:00.74 would have caused these steep walls 00:19:00.84\00:19:02.60 to collapse into the canyon in various places. 00:19:02.70\00:19:06.41 As a result, this valley would have been V-shaped 00:19:06.51\00:19:09.18 with lots of debris. 00:19:09.28\00:19:10.98 But there is very little debris on the canyon 00:19:11.08\00:19:13.72 floor, which is a sign of a much younger canyon. 00:19:13.82\00:19:18.02 In several places around the park, 00:19:18.12\00:19:20.22 there are huge arches high in the canyon walls. 00:19:20.32\00:19:23.83 Arches like these in sandstone will eventually erode away 00:19:23.93\00:19:27.23 and fall to the canyon floor. 00:19:27.30\00:19:30.13 If the Virgin River took millions of years 00:19:30.23\00:19:32.30 to carve this canyon, then these arches 00:19:32.40\00:19:34.70 should have collapsed and eroded away a long time ago. 00:19:34.80\00:19:38.17 But they are still there. 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.64 In addition, the park is full of hanging valleys. 00:19:40.74\00:19:44.58 Hanging valleys are formed when massive amounts of water 00:19:44.68\00:19:47.62 go through an area at high speeds, 00:19:47.72\00:19:50.05 cutting the landscape from many different directions, 00:19:50.15\00:19:52.99 generally due to flooding conditions. 00:19:53.09\00:19:55.26 Some valleys are higher than others and spill 00:19:55.36\00:19:58.16 into the lower ones. 00:19:58.26\00:20:00.20 When the flood waters go away, the intersections 00:20:00.30\00:20:03.30 of the upper canyons into the lower canyons are left hanging. 00:20:03.40\00:20:07.40 Zion is full of these giant hanging valleys. 00:20:07.50\00:20:11.21 A huge amount of water moving together at the same time 00:20:11.31\00:20:14.58 would be required to create these features. 00:20:14.68\00:20:17.51 If small streams over long periods of time 00:20:17.61\00:20:20.62 were responsible for carving the hanging valleys, 00:20:20.72\00:20:23.42 then they should have been eroded down 00:20:23.52\00:20:25.49 or be completely gone, yet they remain 00:20:25.59\00:20:28.92 as a remnant of a global flood where the receding flood 00:20:29.02\00:20:32.16 waters raced across the entire continent. 00:20:32.26\00:20:35.30 One of the features in the park that secular scientists point 00:20:35.40\00:20:38.63 to as evidence for slow and gradual erosion 00:20:38.73\00:20:41.27 by the Virgin River is a place called Big Bend. 00:20:41.37\00:20:44.57 They say that if catastrophic processes were at work, 00:20:44.67\00:20:48.21 this feature would have been eroded away. 00:20:48.31\00:20:51.98 We know that when flowing water finds an obstruction, 00:20:52.08\00:20:55.18 it usually finds a way around it. 00:20:55.28\00:20:57.62 Obstructions will usually be harder 00:20:57.72\00:20:59.65 than the layer being eroded. 00:20:59.75\00:21:01.86 The water finds a weaker point and goes that way. 00:21:01.96\00:21:05.66 This is exactly what happened in Big Bend. 00:21:05.76\00:21:08.43 And this is consistent with a Biblical view. 00:21:08.53\00:21:11.40 You can make this simple observation at the beach. 00:21:11.50\00:21:14.80 Watch how receding waves cut the sand. 00:21:14.90\00:21:17.47 Most of the time, they don't go in a straight line 00:21:17.57\00:21:20.21 but find the weakest point in the sand. 00:21:20.31\00:21:22.78 With all of these observable facts, the amount of water 00:21:22.88\00:21:26.11 and the speed of the water needed to cut Zion, 00:21:26.21\00:21:28.92 it is a testament to the flood of Noah's day. 00:21:29.02\00:21:32.79 After covering the entire Earth by day 150, 00:21:32.89\00:21:36.36 the flood waters were receding. 00:21:36.46\00:21:38.66 As the continents rose and the ocean valleys sank, 00:21:38.76\00:21:41.63 water ran off the continents, first in sheets. 00:21:41.73\00:21:45.13 Then it began to channelize. 00:21:45.23\00:21:47.44 When the water finally emptied into the oceans, 00:21:47.54\00:21:50.11 it left these canyons. 00:21:50.21\00:21:52.81 This whole area in the southwest is full of large scale 00:21:52.91\00:21:56.78 erosional features. 00:21:56.88\00:21:58.65 Secular scientists have had a difficult time 00:21:58.75\00:22:01.12 explaining all of these features through 00:22:01.22\00:22:03.18 slow and gradual processes. 00:22:03.28\00:22:05.89 The global flood best explains what we see here 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.72 at Zion and at many other geologic features 00:22:08.82\00:22:12.23 around the world. 00:22:12.33\00:22:14.36 The Biblical record can be trusted. 00:22:14.46\00:22:16.97 As we look at the geologic record, 00:22:17.07\00:22:18.87 the evidence starts to make sense 00:22:18.97\00:22:20.87 when you include a catastrophic global flood 00:22:20.97\00:22:23.67 as described in the Bible as a real historic event. 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.57 Through our study of the canyon, it's 00:22:29.21\00:22:31.05 plain to see that the Bible's description 00:22:31.15\00:22:33.05 of a catastrophic flood event best 00:22:33.15\00:22:35.25 explains the formation of these layers and the erosion at Zion, 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.09 hands down. 00:22:39.19\00:22:41.09 Secular scientists look at present geologic processes 00:22:41.19\00:22:44.69 and say changes happened over long ages, like at Zion. 00:22:44.79\00:22:49.00 They hold to those uniformitarian belief 00:22:49.10\00:22:51.60 because they have a secular humanist worldview. 00:22:51.70\00:22:55.14 This worldview denies that there is a God who created 00:22:55.24\00:22:58.71 and who delivers judgment against sin. 00:22:58.81\00:23:01.48 If man does not have to be accountable to the Creator, 00:23:01.58\00:23:04.65 then he can live any way he wants. 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.45 The Bible tells us that it's by their own actions and thoughts 00:23:07.55\00:23:11.15 that they hold this world view and deny 00:23:11.25\00:23:13.52 the truth found in God's word, not because of an unbiased view 00:23:13.62\00:23:17.53 of the evidence. 00:23:17.63\00:23:19.33 We can view the evidence starting with the truth 00:23:19.43\00:23:22.23 of what the Bible says. 00:23:22.33\00:23:23.83 And it matches up with quick, catastrophic events. 00:23:23.93\00:23:27.37 Zion shows God's great handiwork but also His judgement. 00:23:27.47\00:23:32.64 The Bible tells us that the global flood 00:23:32.74\00:23:34.94 was brought by God because of man's 00:23:35.04\00:23:37.11 rebellion against his Creator. 00:23:37.21\00:23:38.91 Only one man was found righteous, Noah. 00:23:39.01\00:23:42.08 And he and his family were saved. 00:23:42.18\00:23:43.95 Notice the grace of God. 00:23:44.05\00:23:45.95 He sent a means of salvation through the ark. 00:23:46.05\00:23:48.89 The Flood was real. 00:23:48.99\00:23:50.69 The Bible can be believed. 00:23:50.79\00:23:53.66 But there's also a warning to all of us. 00:23:53.76\00:23:56.87 God's judgment is coming again, this time by fire. 00:23:56.97\00:24:01.64 Man had over 100 years before the flood 00:24:01.74\00:24:04.54 to turn and repent of his rebellion. 00:24:04.64\00:24:07.08 God is patient. 00:24:07.18\00:24:08.38 He desires to see all men repent of their sins 00:24:08.48\00:24:11.51 and turn back to Him, for God has sent 00:24:11.61\00:24:15.75 another means of salvation. 00:24:15.85\00:24:18.25 If you have not turned to God through Jesus Christ, 00:24:18.35\00:24:21.29 the Bible says today is the day of salvation. 00:24:21.39\00:24:24.73 Repent and turn to Him now before His judgment 00:24:24.83\00:24:27.76 against man's rebellion comes again. 00:24:27.86\00:24:31.03 That's it for this episode of
