Well, we're on the final stretch for today. 00:00:15.98\00:00:18.38 One more study together and we will be finished with number 12. 00:00:19.15\00:00:22.72 One for each of the twelve apostles. 00:00:24.02\00:00:26.09 And then we have 12 more left. 00:00:27.36\00:00:29.22 We still have to study, we're going to do 00:00:29.99\00:00:31.63 right now the fourth seal. 00:00:31.66\00:00:33.80 And I believe that we'll be able to finish that. 00:00:33.83\00:00:35.73 And then tomorrow we'll dedicate the first two hours probably 00:00:36.43\00:00:40.67 to the fifth seal. 00:00:40.70\00:00:42.14 And then we'll dedicate the next two hours in the afternoon 00:00:42.77\00:00:45.51 to the sixth seal. 00:00:45.54\00:00:47.68 And then we have to dedicate two or three sessions to 00:00:48.44\00:00:51.25 the interlude, one to the seventh seal, 00:00:51.28\00:00:54.98 and then whatever time we have left over 00:00:55.42\00:00:57.82 we'll dedicate to the last five lessons in the syllabus 00:00:58.25\00:01:03.19 on the issue of the seal of God and the mark of the beast. 00:01:03.22\00:01:05.83 Let's have a word of prayer 00:01:05.96\00:01:07.50 before we begin our last session. 00:01:07.53\00:01:09.73 Our Father and our God, we thank You for 00:01:10.93\00:01:13.70 being the Guide and the Arbiter of history. 00:01:14.14\00:01:17.27 Many times it appears to us that Satan is the one who wins 00:01:18.01\00:01:21.68 and You lose, but we know that in the end 00:01:21.71\00:01:23.85 what You allow and what You cause will eventually 00:01:24.68\00:01:27.95 lead to total and complete victory. 00:01:27.98\00:01:29.98 And, Lord, we want to continue studying 00:01:30.99\00:01:33.66 to see how You have led in the past. 00:01:34.16\00:01:35.92 Because we know that the same God who has led in the past 00:01:35.96\00:01:38.49 will lead us in the future. 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.03 So give us clear minds and give us willing hearts 00:01:40.46\00:01:46.37 that Your word will not return unto You void. 00:01:46.97\00:01:49.60 We pray this in the precious name of Jesus, amen. 00:01:49.70\00:01:53.21 Page 191. 00:01:55.21\00:01:56.91 Page 191. 00:01:57.41\00:01:59.35 We are now going to study about the fourth seal, the pale horse. 00:02:00.08\00:02:04.89 Some versions say the yellow horse. 00:02:05.09\00:02:07.66 But really a better translation is the pale horse. 00:02:09.26\00:02:12.69 Now what is the meaning? 00:02:13.50\00:02:14.83 Let's just see what the meaning of this period is. 00:02:14.86\00:02:18.67 The fourth seal represents the period of papal dominion 00:02:19.10\00:02:22.70 during what is known as the Dark Ages. 00:02:23.54\00:02:26.47 The scarcity of God's Word and rain led to spiritual 00:02:27.21\00:02:33.08 famine, pestilence, and death. 00:02:33.11\00:02:36.99 In addition, the apostate church literally killed 00:02:37.55\00:02:40.86 the martyrs who did not agree with the traditions of men. 00:02:40.89\00:02:46.03 So let's read Revelation 6:7-8 00:02:46.39\00:02:50.10 where you have a description of the fourth seal. 00:02:50.30\00:02:53.34 Certainly this isn't Jesus, right? 00:03:10.15\00:03:12.02 And I have in brackets, pestilence. 00:03:24.07\00:03:26.37 Because that's probably what, "death," means. 00:03:26.40\00:03:28.40 So we have several symbols in this fourth seal. 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.58 First of all, the color, "pale." 00:03:38.98\00:03:41.82 The Greek word is, chloros. 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.52 The color of this horse is really a greenish pale, 00:03:45.02\00:03:48.46 as when a young shoot comes out of a tree. 00:03:48.86\00:03:52.43 It is the paleness of death. 00:03:52.93\00:03:56.60 And then you have death and hades. 00:03:57.23\00:04:00.20 When a person dies, the grave follows death. 00:04:00.54\00:04:04.81 Because people are buried after they die. 00:04:04.91\00:04:07.11 The fourth part of the earth shows that the devastating 00:04:07.98\00:04:12.55 power of the fourth horse and its rider is not universal. 00:04:12.58\00:04:16.82 It's only partial. 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.25 The famine represents the fact that there is a scarcity 00:04:19.52\00:04:24.76 of God's Word. 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.19 Pestilence, and there's a note on this, 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.20 in the New Testament Greek, the word, thanatos, 00:04:30.80\00:04:35.84 technically means, death. 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.07 However, in 30 of the 50 times that this word appears 00:04:38.61\00:04:42.44 in the Greek Old Testament, it is translated, pestilence. 00:04:42.48\00:04:46.82 To say that the fourth horse kills with death 00:04:48.65\00:04:51.69 would be redundant. 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.05 You can't kill any other way than with death. 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.39 So probably what it means is famine follows it. 00:04:57.66\00:05:01.13 And we have death by the sword, and famine 00:05:01.56\00:05:05.57 brings pestilence or disease in its train 00:05:05.77\00:05:09.57 and ultimately leads to death and to the grave. 00:05:09.77\00:05:13.78 And then we have the wild beasts. 00:05:14.54\00:05:16.58 I have several text that explains what this means. 00:05:17.35\00:05:20.02 They are wicked leaders and nations who were inimical 00:05:20.22\00:05:23.65 to God's people and behaved like wild beasts. 00:05:23.69\00:05:27.36 The Bible defends that view, as well as the spirit of prophecy. 00:05:27.56\00:05:31.99 Now, let's notice an Old Testament background, 00:05:32.09\00:05:35.66 first of all, to the fourth seal, the fourth horse. 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.07 In Old Testament times... 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.27 By the way, I'll give you this homework. 00:05:41.57\00:05:44.24 Read Leviticus 26:21-26. That's an important passage. 00:05:44.27\00:05:48.21 I didn't include it, but it speaks about the 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.85 four judgments of God upon apostate Israel. 00:05:50.88\00:05:54.48 In Old Testament times when Israel broke the covenant, 00:05:55.12\00:05:58.15 apostatized from truth, and assimilated pagan customs, 00:05:59.05\00:06:04.09 which is what happened in the third horse, 00:06:04.13\00:06:06.09 God would send the very same four judgments 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.53 that are mentioned in connection with the fourth horse. 00:06:11.73\00:06:14.47 And those judgments were: sword, famine, 00:06:14.87\00:06:18.84 pestilence, which follows famine by the way, 00:06:19.37\00:06:22.74 and ultimately wild beasts. 00:06:22.84\00:06:25.55 You can find all four of these judgments in Leviticus 26. 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.18 That's the foundation. 00:06:28.22\00:06:29.55 Did the church, during the third period, 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.72 break God's covenant? 00:06:33.22\00:06:34.56 It most certainly did. 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.56 Now because Israel, this is an important principle, 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.83 because Israel in the Old Testament period 00:06:41.10\00:06:44.00 were God's literal people living in the literal land of Canaan, 00:06:44.03\00:06:49.00 these judgments were what? Literal. 00:06:49.40\00:06:52.77 However, under the fourth seal, as well as in the other seals, 00:06:53.07\00:06:56.78 we are dealing with... Which Israel? 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.78 ...spiritual Israel in a spiritual land, which is the 00:06:59.81\00:07:03.69 Christian church, and therefore we need to interpret these 00:07:03.72\00:07:07.06 calamities in a symbolic manner. 00:07:07.09\00:07:10.03 And then we have in parenthesis, the texts that you need to 00:07:14.56\00:07:17.60 look at, this is very important, in Daniel 11:28, 30, 32. 00:07:17.63\00:07:21.50 This is the period of papal dominion. 00:07:21.54\00:07:23.27 It's the period of the fourth horse. 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.11 And there we are explicitly told that the papacy 00:07:25.71\00:07:28.64 trampled on God's holy covenant during the 1260 years. 00:07:28.68\00:07:32.28 So would we expect the same four judgments 00:07:32.38\00:07:34.68 if the papacy trampled on the covenant? 00:07:34.72\00:07:36.75 Absolutely. 00:07:37.05\00:07:38.39 Now let's talk about death and hades. 00:07:38.79\00:07:41.42 The immediate aftermath of death is the place where the dead go. 00:07:42.42\00:07:47.23 And where is that? 00:07:48.43\00:07:49.76 The grave. 00:07:49.80\00:07:51.13 The word, hades, is the Greek equivalent of the 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.47 Hebrew word, sheol, and it should consistently 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.77 be translated, "the grave." 00:07:58.81\00:08:00.51 We find the link between the Hebrew and the Greek words 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.78 in 1 Corinthians 15:54-55... 00:08:04.81\00:08:07.62 We'll read these a little bit later. 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.58 ...where the apostle Paul quotes Hosea 13:14 00:08:09.78\00:08:13.22 and uses the word, hades, in place of, sheol. 00:08:13.86\00:08:16.76 So in the book of Hosea, the word for, grave, is, sheol, 00:08:16.79\00:08:20.90 and the apostle Paul uses the word, hades. 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.06 That shows that, sheol, and, hades, are synonymous 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.90 words in different languages. 00:08:26.94\00:08:28.84 Unfortunately, the King James Version 31 times mistakenly 00:08:30.77\00:08:34.41 translates the Hebrew word, sheol, with the word, hell. 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.21 It really should be translated, "the grave." 00:08:38.15\00:08:40.42 The Old Testament regularly links the concepts of 00:08:41.72\00:08:44.69 death and the grave in synonymous parallelism. 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.06 In other words, death and the grave are somewhat synonymous. 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.06 Because when person dies, they go to the grave. 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.96 Notice Psalms 6:5. 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.66 Does the second line explain and amplify the first line? 00:09:02.84\00:09:06.44 Is it the same thought in different words? Yeah. 00:09:06.47\00:09:08.81 It's the same to say, "For in death there is no 00:09:08.84\00:09:11.61 remembrance of you; in the grave who will give you thanks?" 00:09:11.65\00:09:15.22 So death and the grave are linked together. 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.32 Because when a person dies, they go to the grave. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.72 Notice Psalm 89:48. And there are many more. 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.96 In, The State of the Dead, series I have an entire 00:09:23.16\00:09:26.49 presentation on death and hades, particularly on hades, 00:09:26.53\00:09:30.60 as it appears all throughout Scripture 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.73 in the Old and the New Testaments. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.14 Psalm 89:48 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.60 Notice once again, death and the grave together. 00:09:46.05\00:09:49.68 Psalm 116:3, here the psalmist says... 00:09:50.19\00:09:54.29 So once again, death and sheol are used synonymously. 00:10:03.50\00:10:08.60 Notice Isaiah 38:18. 00:10:09.30\00:10:11.37 See, once again, death and the grave together. 00:10:16.95\00:10:20.15 Isaiah 28:15 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.36 I've only given you a sampling here so that you see that 00:10:31.39\00:10:33.66 I'm not just choosing one little verse 00:10:33.70\00:10:35.60 and making an entire application out of that. 00:10:35.83\00:10:38.10 The fact is that death and the grave are linked together, 00:10:38.20\00:10:40.97 not only in Revelation chapter 6. 00:10:41.00\00:10:43.51 So it says in Isaiah 28:15, "Because you have said, 00:10:43.61\00:10:47.71 'We have made a covenant with death, 00:10:48.11\00:10:51.18 and with sheol we are in agreement.'" 00:10:51.21\00:10:54.25 Is a covenant an agreement? 00:10:55.08\00:10:56.69 So are death and the grave linked together? 00:10:57.49\00:11:00.49 Are they synonymous, basically? Yes. 00:11:00.52\00:11:03.19 Now here comes the key text, Hosea 13:14. 00:11:03.73\00:11:08.33 Hosea 13:14 00:11:08.76\00:11:11.17 God is speaking here. 00:11:12.77\00:11:14.10 The apostle Paul paraphrases this in 1 Corinthians 15. 00:11:29.48\00:11:34.32 So let's go there just for a moment. 00:11:34.76\00:11:36.42 1 Corinthians 15 00:11:36.86\00:11:38.89 And let's notice how the apostle Paul 00:11:39.19\00:11:40.86 is actually drawing on Hosea. 00:11:40.96\00:11:43.00 He doesn't quote is textually, 00:11:43.03\00:11:45.10 but he's drawing on the terminology. 00:11:45.47\00:11:47.70 Only instead of the word, grave, which is, hades, 00:11:48.00\00:11:51.97 he uses the word, sheol, which is the 00:11:52.57\00:11:55.14 Hebrew Old Testament word. 00:11:55.18\00:11:56.71 1 Corinthians 15:54 00:11:57.31\00:12:01.45 So is Paul drawing on the book of Hosea. 00:12:20.57\00:12:23.84 Yes, he's drawing on Hosea. 00:12:23.87\00:12:25.21 Only, in Hosea the word for, grave, is, sheol; 00:12:25.87\00:12:29.34 the word for, grave, in the New Testament Greek 00:12:30.15\00:12:33.52 is, hades. 00:12:33.55\00:12:34.98 And so, death and hades are linked together. 00:12:36.12\00:12:38.92 Just like death and sheol are linked together. 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.52 So the question is, does the word, sheol, 00:12:43.12\00:12:50.03 and does the word, hades, mean, hell, a place of burning? 00:12:50.70\00:12:54.74 No. 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.24 It simply means, the grave. 00:12:56.27\00:12:57.61 When a person dies, the next step is what? 00:12:57.74\00:13:01.58 To be buried in the grave. 00:13:02.21\00:13:03.71 Death and the grave followed this yellow horse. 00:13:04.11\00:13:09.25 Now another place where we can link the word, sheol, 00:13:09.68\00:13:12.49 with the word, hades, is in Acts 2:25-27, 30-31. 00:13:12.52\00:13:19.39 Here, Peter on the day of Pentecost is drawing 00:13:19.86\00:13:23.90 on a passage that we find in Psalm 16:8-10. 00:13:24.20\00:13:29.14 And in the Greek, the word, grave, is the word, hades; 00:13:30.01\00:13:35.64 whereas in the Old Testament in Psalm 16 00:13:36.14\00:13:40.48 the word is, sheol. 00:13:40.75\00:13:42.08 That's why we know that sheol and hades are synonymous 00:13:42.12\00:13:46.29 in different languages. 00:13:46.32\00:13:47.72 Notice Acts 2:25-27, 30-31. 00:13:48.16\00:13:54.00 He's getting this from Psalm 16:8-10. 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.34 This is Jesus speaking prophetically. 00:14:12.25\00:14:14.95 The New King James transliterates the word 00:14:21.16\00:14:23.39 from the Greek, hades. 00:14:23.43\00:14:25.43 Other versions like the New International Version 00:14:26.80\00:14:29.36 like I was saying, the New International Version 00:14:29.40\00:14:31.93 doesn't translate, "For you will not leave My soul in hades," 00:14:31.97\00:14:35.87 or in hell like the King James Version says. 00:14:35.90\00:14:37.97 The New International Version says, "You will not leave 00:14:38.17\00:14:40.38 Me in the grave." 00:14:40.41\00:14:41.74 It's a much better translation. 00:14:42.18\00:14:43.65 "You will not leave My soul," or, "You will not leave Me 00:14:44.38\00:14:47.15 in hades," or the grave, "nor will you allow your Holy One 00:14:47.18\00:14:50.42 to see corruption." 00:14:50.45\00:14:51.79 So the word here for, grave, is, hades. 00:14:51.82\00:14:56.66 In the Old Testament where this is coming from 00:14:56.93\00:14:59.09 the word is, sheol. 00:14:59.13\00:15:00.46 So sheol and hades are the same word in different languages. 00:15:00.50\00:15:04.10 Verse 30... 00:15:05.03\00:15:06.37 This is David foreseeing this. 00:15:17.78\00:15:19.68 So basically, when this horse, you have a reference to death 00:15:34.43\00:15:41.20 and hades, it doesn't mean death and hell. 00:15:41.40\00:15:44.97 It means death and what? Death and the grave. 00:15:45.41\00:15:48.94 Because this is the pale horse. 00:15:48.98\00:15:50.55 This is the horse that brings death. 00:15:50.58\00:15:52.68 First by famine, because there's famine for the Word of God. 00:15:52.98\00:15:56.38 And there's darkness that we noticed under the third horse. 00:15:56.55\00:15:59.42 And secondly, because those who don't agree with the church 00:15:59.62\00:16:03.36 are being killed. 00:16:03.79\00:16:05.13 Physically killed. 00:16:05.23\00:16:06.56 That's why the martyrs are crying out in the fifth seal. 00:16:06.59\00:16:09.23 So far so good? 00:16:09.70\00:16:11.03 Now the key question at this point is this: 00:16:12.03\00:16:15.14 What caused this church to die and to go to the grave? 00:16:15.67\00:16:20.14 The answer is that four factors led to death and to the grave. 00:16:20.58\00:16:24.41 First of all, the sword. 00:16:25.31\00:16:28.02 The key verses, and we have covered this before 00:16:29.02\00:16:31.19 so we don't have to dwell a lot on it, 00:16:31.22\00:16:33.15 the key verses to understand the symbolic meaning of 00:16:33.39\00:16:36.39 the sword in the fourth seal are Romans 13:1-4 00:16:36.42\00:16:40.86 and Revelation 13:10, 14. 00:16:41.33\00:16:44.93 As we have seen, more often than not 00:16:45.67\00:16:48.34 when the sword of the Spirit convicts of sin, 00:16:48.84\00:16:51.47 what happens? 00:16:52.44\00:16:53.78 It awakens the sword of persecution on the part of 00:16:53.88\00:16:56.98 those who wish to suppress it. 00:16:57.01\00:16:59.01 And we noticed that in the third seal, right? 00:16:59.98\00:17:02.98 Matthew 10:34-37 00:17:03.28\00:17:06.76 I'm not going to read Romans 13 again. 00:17:06.79\00:17:09.12 Romans 13:1-4, let's just read verse 4 in that passage. 00:17:09.32\00:17:14.20 Speaking about the civil power, it says, "For he is 00:17:14.46\00:17:16.77 God's minister to you for good. 00:17:16.80\00:17:18.87 But if you do evil, be afraid; 00:17:19.30\00:17:21.44 for he," that is the civil ruler, 00:17:21.74\00:17:23.74 "does not bear the sword in vain. 00:17:23.84\00:17:26.24 For he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath 00:17:26.68\00:17:30.95 on him who practices evil." 00:17:31.11\00:17:35.48 Now let's read the note, and then I'm going to give you 00:17:36.79\00:17:38.92 additional explanation. 00:17:38.95\00:17:40.49 In apocalyptic prophecy, symbols are fluid. 00:17:41.09\00:17:44.76 They take different shapes depending on where they appear. 00:17:44.96\00:17:48.43 That is, that the sword can represent 00:17:48.83\00:17:52.43 the Word of God, right? 00:17:52.47\00:17:53.84 But when the Word of God is proclaimed, what happens? 00:17:54.70\00:17:57.61 The church then appeals to the sword of civil power 00:17:57.64\00:18:01.84 to punish those who don't agree with the church. 00:18:02.18\00:18:04.55 Let me ask you this. 00:18:05.35\00:18:06.95 Did the papacy use the sword during this period to kill? 00:18:07.15\00:18:11.92 It used the Bible to kill, right? 00:18:14.09\00:18:16.66 It can't represent the Bible. 00:18:18.09\00:18:19.83 The papacy did not use the Bible to kill. 00:18:20.13\00:18:22.50 What did it use? 00:18:23.26\00:18:24.60 It used the sword of the civil power. 00:18:25.03\00:18:27.24 How many armies does the papacy have? 00:18:28.37\00:18:30.07 How many tanks? 00:18:30.11\00:18:31.44 How many missiles? 00:18:32.47\00:18:33.81 It will have all of them because it links up with the states 00:18:35.84\00:18:38.61 and it has all of the support of the states. 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.78 But it has none of its own. 00:18:41.12\00:18:42.55 Right? 00:18:42.82\00:18:44.15 What did the papacy do during the 1260 years? 00:18:44.25\00:18:47.32 It linked up with the state and it used the sword of the state 00:18:47.69\00:18:52.76 to punish those who did not agree with its practices 00:18:52.99\00:18:57.07 and its beliefs. 00:18:57.17\00:18:58.50 It killed with what? 00:18:59.23\00:19:00.87 With the sword. 00:19:01.14\00:19:02.47 But the interesting thing is, that this same power 00:19:03.00\00:19:06.14 that killed with the sword received a 00:19:06.44\00:19:10.21 deadly wound by the sword. 00:19:10.25\00:19:12.38 Notice Revelation 13:9-10. 00:19:13.11\00:19:15.38 This is at the top of page 196. 00:19:15.42\00:19:17.75 Revelation 13:9-10 00:19:17.79\00:19:20.06 It says, "If anyone has an ear, let him hear." 00:19:20.26\00:19:23.06 Did the papacy lead into captivity? 00:19:30.03\00:19:32.07 Yes. Was the papacy led into captivity? 00:19:32.60\00:19:35.54 So the papacy killed with the sword. 00:19:46.38\00:19:48.58 And the sword gave the papacy its deadly wound. 00:19:49.18\00:19:51.72 The papacy led into captivity 00:19:53.12\00:19:55.86 and the papacy was taken into captivity. 00:19:55.89\00:19:58.53 So the first thing that this yellow horse does 00:19:59.89\00:20:05.60 is take away peace by killing those who did not agree with 00:20:05.90\00:20:08.80 the church with the sword, with the aid or the help 00:20:08.84\00:20:11.87 of the state. 00:20:11.91\00:20:13.24 Now let's notice the note under this text, Revelation 13:9-10. 00:20:14.18\00:20:20.08 The New King James Version of Revelation 6:8 00:20:20.48\00:20:23.35 tells us that power was given... 00:20:23.65\00:20:26.86 Listen to the tense of the verb. 00:20:26.89\00:20:28.92 ...power was given... 00:20:28.96\00:20:30.29 And a better translation is not power, but authority. 00:20:30.63\00:20:33.13 There are two Greek words that are translated, power, 00:20:33.76\00:20:36.16 in the King James and the New King James. 00:20:36.56\00:20:38.60 The first is the word, dunamis, where we get 00:20:38.63\00:20:41.64 the word, dynamite, from. 00:20:41.67\00:20:43.00 That's not the word here. 00:20:43.04\00:20:44.37 The word is, exousia, which means, authority. 00:20:44.41\00:20:47.48 So it says here that this power was given authority 00:20:48.18\00:20:54.05 to death and the grave to kill with the sword. 00:20:55.32\00:20:58.25 It is hardly a coincidence that the little horn... 00:20:59.52\00:21:02.99 If you read Daniel 7:25, it says, "was given." 00:21:03.19\00:21:06.93 ...power to make war against the saints and overcome them. 00:21:07.46\00:21:11.93 In Revelation 13:7, the beast, which is equivalent to the 00:21:13.17\00:21:16.84 little horn in Daniel 7, once again tells us the beast 00:21:16.87\00:21:20.01 was given power to make war with the saints. 00:21:20.04\00:21:23.48 Are you catching the picture? 00:21:24.38\00:21:25.75 Now, how else did the papal system kill people? 00:21:26.41\00:21:31.65 In symbolic terms, famine comes when the Holy Spirit, 00:21:32.72\00:21:38.43 speaking through the Word, is scarce. 00:21:39.13\00:21:42.36 Famine comes when it doesn't rain. 00:21:43.06\00:21:44.97 And when it doesn't rain, there's a scarcity of food. 00:21:45.90\00:21:49.87 Right? 00:21:49.97\00:21:51.31 Now, during the Dark Ages there was no, what? 00:21:52.01\00:21:55.34 No rain. We're not talking about literal rain. 00:21:56.44\00:21:58.55 You say, "How do we know that during the 1260 years 00:21:59.38\00:22:01.88 there was no rain?" 00:22:01.92\00:22:03.25 Because in Revelation 11 it says that the two witnesses 00:22:03.28\00:22:06.02 closed the heavens so that it would not rain 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.82 during their prophecy. 00:22:07.86\00:22:09.19 The same period. 00:22:10.63\00:22:11.96 So there was no rain. 00:22:12.26\00:22:13.60 And therefore, what happened? 00:22:14.00\00:22:15.86 Bread was scarce. 00:22:15.90\00:22:18.40 The result was what? 00:22:20.24\00:22:21.94 Famine, spiritual hunger. 00:22:22.74\00:22:24.57 Famine, in turn, led to what? 00:22:25.27\00:22:27.74 Malnutrition, and malnutrition led to pestilence, disease. 00:22:28.24\00:22:36.15 And ultimately, pestilence led to what? 00:22:37.09\00:22:39.85 To death. 00:22:40.06\00:22:41.39 Are you catching the picture? 00:22:42.19\00:22:43.53 The prophet Isaiah explained the symbolic meaning of 00:22:44.33\00:22:46.53 rain, bread, and the Word. 00:22:46.56\00:22:49.53 "For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, 00:22:50.33\00:22:55.00 and do not return there, but water the earth 00:22:55.64\00:22:59.41 and make it bring forth and bud that it may give seed 00:22:59.91\00:23:03.95 to the sower and bread to the eater..." 00:23:03.98\00:23:06.01 So does rain, does the falling of rain have anything 00:23:06.05\00:23:08.75 to do with giving bread? 00:23:08.78\00:23:10.12 Yes or no? 00:23:11.82\00:23:13.15 Yes. 00:23:13.19\00:23:14.52 Now comes the comparison to rain and bread. 00:23:15.82\00:23:19.69 Rain makes the crop grow, and then the grain is harvested, 00:23:19.79\00:23:25.90 and bread is made. 00:23:25.93\00:23:27.27 When there's no rain, the result is that you don't have, 00:23:27.30\00:23:31.47 you know, it's very expensive. 00:23:31.51\00:23:32.84 Like we noticed in the third seal. 00:23:32.87\00:23:34.51 Here comes the comparison, verse 11. 00:23:35.51\00:23:37.18 "...so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; 00:23:37.21\00:23:41.95 it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish 00:23:42.62\00:23:46.15 what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing 00:23:46.19\00:23:48.69 for which I sent it." 00:23:48.72\00:23:50.06 Was there a scarcity of the Holy Spirit during the period 00:23:51.13\00:23:53.56 of the Roman Catholic papacy? 00:23:53.60\00:23:55.60 Was there a scarcity of the Word of God? 00:23:56.63\00:23:58.83 Listen, the Waldenses had to hide in the Piedmont. 00:23:59.50\00:24:03.64 And they wrote text of Scripture on little pieces of parchment. 00:24:04.41\00:24:08.48 They were traveling salesmen, and they would 00:24:08.88\00:24:11.51 give these pieces of parchment with scriptures to people. 00:24:11.55\00:24:15.98 Because reading the Scriptures to the lay people 00:24:16.02\00:24:18.32 was strictly forbidden. 00:24:18.35\00:24:20.12 So was there famine during this period? 00:24:21.02\00:24:23.69 Yes. Because the Spirit was scarce. 00:24:23.73\00:24:26.80 Was there spiritual hunger? Yes. 00:24:27.20\00:24:29.56 And whoever did not agree with the church, 00:24:29.76\00:24:31.57 what did the church do? 00:24:31.60\00:24:32.93 It used the state, the sword of the state, 00:24:32.97\00:24:35.77 to kill those who did not agree with the church. 00:24:36.71\00:24:39.57 Notice Deuteronomy 32:2. 00:24:40.01\00:24:42.28 "Let my teaching drop as rain..." 00:24:43.31\00:24:45.61 So teaching, once again, is related to rain. 00:24:45.65\00:24:49.12 Notice Hosea. 00:24:58.69\00:25:00.03 Once again, knowledge of the Lord, speech, God's Word, 00:25:00.06\00:25:05.30 all have to do with God communicating to us. 00:25:05.50\00:25:08.57 It says, "Let us know..." 00:25:08.77\00:25:10.11 A time is coming when there's going to be famine on the earth. 00:25:24.99\00:25:28.62 Was there famine during the 1260 years? Yes. 00:25:29.26\00:25:32.56 But Amos 8:11-12 is talking about a famine... 00:25:32.83\00:25:37.03 You know, even during the Dark Ages when the papacy 00:25:37.53\00:25:40.24 had dominion, there was still some of God's Word 00:25:40.27\00:25:43.87 and there was still some of God's faithful people 00:25:43.91\00:25:46.57 that assimilated the Word. 00:25:46.61\00:25:47.94 But the time is coming when probation closes 00:25:47.98\00:25:50.08 when nobody is going to be able to find the Word of God 00:25:50.11\00:25:53.31 because there's going to be a famine in the land. 00:25:53.35\00:25:55.48 And they will seek for the Word of God, 00:25:55.52\00:25:56.89 they will not be able to find it. 00:25:56.92\00:25:58.55 Notice what it says... 00:25:59.25\00:26:00.59 Once again, bread is related with water, 00:26:11.50\00:26:13.30 with the Holy Spirit. 00:26:13.34\00:26:14.67 See, when it rains, the crop grows. 00:26:19.44\00:26:22.24 The Holy Spirit falls, it's connected with the Word. 00:26:22.81\00:26:25.51 And as a result, people are spiritually healthy. 00:26:26.38\00:26:28.55 Verse 12... 00:26:28.95\00:26:30.29 In other words, they're looking for bread. 00:26:39.16\00:26:40.80 But there's famine. 00:26:41.16\00:26:42.70 Are you catching the picture? 00:26:45.80\00:26:47.20 Now what about the wild beasts? 00:26:48.30\00:26:50.14 The wild beasts are also symbolic. 00:26:51.57\00:26:53.21 We're dealing with symbols. Right? 00:26:53.24\00:26:55.24 Now in Scripture, individuals who are hateful and want to 00:26:56.54\00:27:02.25 destroy God's people are compared to wild beasts. 00:27:02.28\00:27:04.95 Let's read several texts. 00:27:05.92\00:27:07.26 Psalm 74:18-19 00:27:07.29\00:27:10.46 So who is compared with the wild beasts? 00:27:31.68\00:27:33.68 The enemy. 00:27:34.72\00:27:36.05 Notice Psalm 7:1-2. 00:27:36.92\00:27:39.12 Who is, "they"? 00:27:51.73\00:27:53.07 Those that persecute, right? 00:27:53.44\00:27:54.87 Once again, enemies are compared to a lion 00:28:04.38\00:28:07.68 that devours and tears in pieces. 00:28:07.72\00:28:10.35 Psalm 10:9-11 00:28:10.99\00:28:13.05 What principle are we using here to understand 00:28:13.09\00:28:15.09 what the wild beasts represent symbolically? 00:28:15.12\00:28:17.56 What are we doing? 00:28:17.59\00:28:18.93 Does the fourth seal explain what the wild beasts are? 00:28:19.76\00:28:22.90 Does it tell you what the wild beasts symbolize? 00:28:23.53\00:28:25.63 No, it doesn't tell you. 00:28:25.83\00:28:27.17 So what do we do? 00:28:27.20\00:28:28.54 Well, we see what wild beasts mean symbolically 00:28:29.24\00:28:31.64 in other places in Scripture. 00:28:31.67\00:28:33.31 It's that simple. 00:28:33.64\00:28:34.98 Now notice Psalm 10:9-11. 00:28:35.64\00:28:39.25 This is the enemy. 00:28:40.68\00:28:42.02 Notice, it's using all of the mannerisms of the lion. 00:28:51.56\00:28:54.60 Is that what the religious leaders said 00:29:07.48\00:29:08.91 during the 1260 years? 00:29:08.94\00:29:10.65 Was God seeing? 00:29:11.21\00:29:12.55 He was writing it all in the heavenly books. 00:29:12.58\00:29:14.38 Because He's going to rectify all of those wrong judgments. 00:29:14.88\00:29:17.35 You know, it makes me think of John Huss. 00:29:17.39\00:29:20.12 You ever heard of John Huss? 00:29:20.16\00:29:21.49 You know, he was tried there in the cathedral in Prague. 00:29:23.22\00:29:29.86 In Constance actually, he was taken to Constance from Prague. 00:29:29.90\00:29:33.13 He was tried in the Cathedral, and he was found guilty. 00:29:33.17\00:29:36.57 Was he guilty? No. 00:29:36.60\00:29:38.57 And he was taken and he was burned at the stake. 00:29:38.91\00:29:41.24 Was that just? 00:29:42.54\00:29:43.88 No, totally unjust. 00:29:44.25\00:29:45.78 The earthly judgment was wrong. 00:29:46.08\00:29:48.48 Does the time have to come when that needs to be rectified? 00:29:50.02\00:29:52.55 Where is it rectified? 00:29:53.36\00:29:54.69 When Huss' name appears in the heavenly judgment. 00:29:55.56\00:29:58.69 It will be shows that those who did that to him were wrong 00:29:59.13\00:30:02.73 and Huss was right. 00:30:02.76\00:30:04.10 And the reward will be given to Huss. 00:30:05.83\00:30:07.90 In other words, the reward will be reversed. 00:30:07.94\00:30:10.47 Huss will be rewarded with eternal life, 00:30:11.84\00:30:14.14 like should have happened before, 00:30:14.18\00:30:15.91 and those who oppressed him will suffer eternal death. 00:30:16.11\00:30:18.91 The purpose of the judgment, to rectify, 00:30:20.42\00:30:23.15 there in Daniel chapter 7. 00:30:23.82\00:30:25.15 Notice Psalm 17:9-12. 00:30:25.19\00:30:29.66 Psalm 22:12-13 00:30:52.11\00:30:54.15 This is a Messianic psalm. 00:30:54.18\00:30:55.52 It's talking about the sufferings of Christ 00:30:55.55\00:30:57.02 at the hand of His enemies. 00:30:57.05\00:30:58.39 "Many bulls have surrounded Me; strong bulls of Bashan 00:30:58.42\00:31:02.99 have encircled Me. 00:31:03.43\00:31:04.99 They gape at Me with their mouths 00:31:05.09\00:31:07.26 like a raging and roaring lion." 00:31:07.30\00:31:09.90 Proverbs 28:15 00:31:10.80\00:31:12.73 "Like a roaring lion and a charging bear 00:31:12.77\00:31:16.10 is a wicked ruler over poor people. 00:31:16.30\00:31:19.51 Zechariah 10:3 00:31:20.71\00:31:22.54 "My anger is kindled against the shepherds, 00:31:22.88\00:31:25.61 and I will punish the goatherds." 00:31:25.98\00:31:28.18 Literally in the Hebrew, the goatherds are the leaders. 00:31:28.88\00:31:34.99 Such as in the NIV. 00:31:35.02\00:31:36.83 "For the Lord of hosts will visit His flock, 00:31:37.16\00:31:39.13 the house of Judah, and will make them 00:31:39.16\00:31:41.23 as His royal horse in the battle." 00:31:41.26\00:31:43.77 The apostle Paul in the New Testament 00:31:44.83\00:31:46.60 warned the church at Ephesus with the following words. 00:31:47.37\00:31:50.97 Is that speaking about real literal wolves 00:31:59.25\00:32:01.68 or is it symbolic wolves? 00:32:01.72\00:32:03.52 Symbolic wolves. 00:32:03.55\00:32:04.92 Notice Matthew 7:15. Here Jesus speaks. 00:32:05.29\00:32:08.12 Are you catching the picture of what, wild beasts, mean? 00:32:16.97\00:32:19.37 Now Ellen White adds her testimony. 00:32:20.34\00:32:22.60 Review and Herald, August 18, 1896. 00:32:23.97\00:32:26.64 "The symbols of earthly governments are..." What? 00:32:27.38\00:32:30.28 "...wild beasts, but in the kingdom of Christ, 00:32:30.88\00:32:34.05 men are called upon to behold, not a ferocious beast, 00:32:34.08\00:32:37.39 but the Lamb of God." 00:32:37.69\00:32:39.35 Ellen White is speaking here about the hatred that Doeg, 00:32:41.02\00:32:44.89 the Edomite, had against Saul, King Saul. 00:32:44.93\00:32:48.06 It says... 00:32:49.46\00:32:50.80 Actually, Doeg led to the destruction of an entire city 00:32:51.07\00:32:57.54 with all of the priests, 85 priests, all of people there, 00:32:57.57\00:33:00.71 all of the beasts. 00:33:00.74\00:33:02.08 The city was totally demolished. 00:33:02.11\00:33:04.21 Because Doeg hated David. 00:33:04.41\00:33:05.85 But I won't get into that story right now. 00:33:07.42\00:33:09.55 He didn't hate Saul, he hated David. 00:33:10.35\00:33:12.22 "Like savage beasts who have tasted of blood, 00:33:12.62\00:33:16.46 so where..." Who? "...Saul and Doeg." 00:33:17.26\00:33:20.93 They allied themselves to try and get rid of David. 00:33:21.26\00:33:24.70 So notice, Saul and Doeg are compared to what? 00:33:24.90\00:33:29.00 To savage beasts. 00:33:29.27\00:33:30.67 Notice the following statement. 00:33:31.27\00:33:34.18 This the condemnation of Christ. 00:33:34.81\00:33:37.08 "When the condemnation of Jesus was pronounced by the judges, 00:33:37.11\00:33:39.91 a satanic fury took possession of the people. 00:33:40.42\00:33:43.55 The roar of voices was like that of..." What? 00:33:44.22\00:33:47.59 "...wild beasts. 00:33:47.76\00:33:49.42 They made a rush toward Jesus, crying, 'He is guilty. 00:33:49.66\00:33:52.73 Put Him to death.' 00:33:52.76\00:33:54.10 And had it not been for the Roman soldiers, 00:33:54.30\00:33:56.36 Jesus would not have lived to be hanged 00:33:56.56\00:33:59.03 upon the cross of Calvary. 00:33:59.07\00:34:00.40 He would have been..." What? "...torn in pieces..." 00:34:00.44\00:34:03.44 What is it that tears things in pieces? 00:34:03.47\00:34:05.54 Wild beasts. 00:34:05.74\00:34:07.08 "He would have been torn in pieces before His judges 00:34:07.11\00:34:09.44 had not Roman authority interfered and by force of arms 00:34:09.48\00:34:13.48 withheld the violence of the mob." 00:34:13.52\00:34:15.98 Sketches From the Life of Paul, page 19, 00:34:17.95\00:34:20.56 "At this, the priests and rulers were beside 00:34:21.39\00:34:24.63 themselves with anger." 00:34:24.66\00:34:25.99 This is the stoning of Stephen. 00:34:26.03\00:34:27.53 "They were more like wild beasts of prey 00:34:27.90\00:34:30.67 than like human beings. 00:34:30.97\00:34:32.63 They rushed upon Stephen, gnashing their teeth." 00:34:32.67\00:34:36.00 Just like a wild animal. 00:34:36.04\00:34:37.51 Notice what we find about the Waldenses. 00:34:38.47\00:34:40.78 Now we're entering the papal period. 00:34:40.81\00:34:42.54 Because the fourth horse is the period of papal dominion. 00:34:42.58\00:34:45.45 Once again, the papacy is compared to wild beasts. 00:34:45.48\00:34:48.98 It says, "From some hiding place among the tombs 00:34:49.02\00:34:52.05 two madmen rush upon them as if to tear them to pieces." 00:34:52.42\00:34:57.49 Actually, you know, I put the Waldenses there in the brackets, 00:34:58.59\00:35:03.10 but really this is speaking about the two 00:35:03.13\00:35:04.93 demon possessed men. 00:35:05.23\00:35:06.77 So anyway, let's go back to this. 00:35:06.94\00:35:08.50 "From some hiding place among the tombs 00:35:08.54\00:35:11.27 two madmen rush upon them..." 00:35:11.31\00:35:12.77 You need to cross out there the Waldenses. 00:35:13.64\00:35:16.18 These are the two demon possessed men of Gadara. 00:35:16.21\00:35:18.98 "...as if to..." Do what? 00:35:19.01\00:35:20.55 "...to tear them in pieces. 00:35:20.95\00:35:22.68 Hanging about these men are parts of chains 00:35:23.08\00:35:25.62 that they have broken in escaping from confinement. 00:35:25.65\00:35:27.92 Their flesh is torn and bleeding, 00:35:28.02\00:35:29.72 their eyes glare out from their long and matted hair, 00:35:29.76\00:35:33.19 the very likeness of humanity seems to have been blotted out. 00:35:33.60\00:35:37.03 They look more like..." What? 00:35:37.43\00:35:39.03 "...like wild beasts than like men." 00:35:39.33\00:35:42.27 Notice what Ellen White has to say about the papacy. 00:35:42.30\00:35:44.67 "As the ravenous beast is rendered more furious 00:35:45.04\00:35:48.84 by the taste of blood, so the rage of the papist 00:35:48.88\00:35:53.11 was kindled to greater intensity 00:35:53.15\00:35:55.28 by the sufferings of their victims." 00:35:55.32\00:35:57.75 On the death of Jerome, who was martyred around 00:35:59.25\00:36:02.56 the same time as John Huss, "Their thirst for blood 00:36:02.59\00:36:06.19 whetted by the death of Huss, clamored for fresh victims. 00:36:07.10\00:36:11.97 Only by an unreserved surrender of the truth 00:36:12.43\00:36:15.00 could Jerome preserve his life. 00:36:15.04\00:36:16.64 But he had determined to avow his faith 00:36:17.11\00:36:19.54 and follow his brother martyr to the flames." 00:36:19.57\00:36:22.64 Have you ever read where the apostle Paul stated that 00:36:23.58\00:36:26.05 he fought against the wild beasts in the amphitheater? 00:36:26.08\00:36:30.45 That doesn't mean that Paul was thrown into the colosseum 00:36:31.69\00:36:34.66 to fight with lions. 00:36:34.69\00:36:36.02 Notice this perceptive remark by Ellen White. 00:36:36.06\00:36:38.76 This is found in, Sketches From the Life of Paul, page 78. 00:36:39.36\00:36:43.23 "Paul informed the Corinthians of his trouble in Asia 00:36:43.47\00:36:46.63 where, he says, 'We were pressed out of measure, 00:36:47.14\00:36:50.17 above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life.' 00:36:50.21\00:36:55.04 In his first epistle, he speaks of fighting with 00:36:55.64\00:36:58.65 beasts at Ephesus. 00:36:58.68\00:37:00.85 He thus refers to the fanatical mob that clamored for his life. 00:37:01.22\00:37:05.82 They were indeed more like furious wild beasts than men." 00:37:06.02\00:37:10.43 So how did the papacy treat God's people 00:37:12.43\00:37:16.67 and try to get rid of God's people? 00:37:16.70\00:37:18.03 They were like wild beasts. 00:37:18.07\00:37:19.40 The wild beasts represent the leaders of the papal church 00:37:19.43\00:37:22.70 that persecuted and tried to kill God's people. 00:37:22.74\00:37:25.01 The papacy killed people with famine. 00:37:25.51\00:37:28.08 They killed people with the sword. 00:37:28.11\00:37:29.74 They acted like wild beasts. 00:37:30.21\00:37:32.01 Is this all true of that period of history, 00:37:32.05\00:37:34.78 of the period of the 1260 years? 00:37:34.82\00:37:36.95 No doubt whatsoever. 00:37:37.62\00:37:38.95 Absolutely. 00:37:38.99\00:37:40.32 Now, the period of the fourth horse 00:37:40.66\00:37:45.39 is the same period as the fourth church. 00:37:46.09\00:37:48.60 The fourth horse is the period of the papacy. 00:37:50.23\00:37:52.57 Is that clear in your mind? 00:37:52.60\00:37:54.00 The fourth horse represents the period of the papacy 00:37:54.20\00:37:56.97 where death is being brought about by wild beasts. 00:37:57.51\00:37:59.84 By, you know, leaders of the church that are just furious 00:37:59.87\00:38:04.48 and want to destroy God's people by the sword, 00:38:04.58\00:38:07.12 using the power of the state. 00:38:07.15\00:38:08.68 By famine because there's no rain; the Holy Spirit is scarce. 00:38:08.98\00:38:12.72 The Word of God is scarce. 00:38:12.75\00:38:14.46 People are dying spiritually. 00:38:14.86\00:38:16.79 And many are being killed physically as well. 00:38:16.89\00:38:19.33 This parallel to the church of Thyatira, the fourth church. 00:38:20.10\00:38:23.63 Let's draw the parallel. 00:38:24.33\00:38:25.67 This is where it gets very, very interesting. 00:38:25.70\00:38:28.60 The period of the fourth horse is parallel to the 00:38:29.57\00:38:31.84 period of the fourth church, Thyatira. 00:38:31.87\00:38:34.94 The Old Testament background to the church of Thyatira 00:38:35.64\00:38:38.28 is the story of Elijah. 00:38:38.31\00:38:40.05 Jezebel was the central protagonist during this period. 00:38:40.98\00:38:44.82 And by the way, the fourth church mentions Jezebel by name. 00:38:45.92\00:38:50.66 So the church during this period is like Jezebel. 00:38:52.13\00:38:55.73 So do we need to know something about Jezebel 00:38:56.87\00:38:59.97 to understand what happened during this 00:39:00.07\00:39:01.77 period of the church? 00:39:01.80\00:39:03.14 See, it's going to help us understand even better 00:39:03.17\00:39:05.24 by noticing what happened during the church 00:39:05.67\00:39:08.34 parallel to what happened during the fourth seal, 00:39:08.74\00:39:11.01 during the yellow horse. 00:39:11.05\00:39:12.61 So let's go to the notes here. 00:39:13.31\00:39:14.95 Because Israel apostatized from the covenant of the Lord, 00:39:14.98\00:39:18.82 the four judgments of Leviticus 26 befell the people. 00:39:19.29\00:39:23.96 This is in the days of Elijah. 00:39:23.99\00:39:25.43 In the Old Testament story, Jezebel employed 00:39:26.96\00:39:29.83 the civil power of Ahab's sword... 00:39:29.86\00:39:32.63 Is that correct? 00:39:32.67\00:39:34.00 ...to extend her apostate syncretistic religion 00:39:34.40\00:39:38.24 that blended the worship of the sun god Baal 00:39:38.54\00:39:41.51 with the worship of the Lord. 00:39:41.54\00:39:43.18 Was Israel only worshiping Baal 00:39:44.58\00:39:47.05 or were they claiming to worship both? 00:39:47.08\00:39:48.72 Elijah said, "How long halt ye between two opinions? 00:39:49.85\00:39:53.69 If the Lord is God, follow Him. And if Baal, follow him." 00:39:54.12\00:39:56.39 In other words, Don't think that you can serve God 00:39:56.59\00:39:59.06 and also serve Baal at the same time. 00:39:59.33\00:40:02.16 We're told in the story, and we can't read all these verses, 00:40:03.26\00:40:05.83 but you can look them up, Ahab killed the prophets 00:40:05.87\00:40:08.14 of the Lord, how? 00:40:08.17\00:40:09.50 With the sword. 00:40:10.07\00:40:11.41 Is that one of the judgments of the fourth horse? 00:40:11.44\00:40:14.21 Yes. 00:40:14.24\00:40:15.58 This apostasy led to a severe what? 00:40:15.61\00:40:18.25 We're dealing with literal now. 00:40:18.78\00:40:20.25 It led to a severe drought. 00:40:20.92\00:40:22.58 Because there was no what? 00:40:22.62\00:40:23.95 Because there was no rain. 00:40:24.79\00:40:26.15 Does this sound familiar? 00:40:26.19\00:40:27.92 There was no rain for three and a half years. 00:40:30.56\00:40:32.69 We're talking now about literal Israel. 00:40:32.73\00:40:35.03 But it's symbolic of the 1260 years. 00:40:35.53\00:40:38.43 The drought led to what? 00:40:38.80\00:40:40.37 Famine and pestilence. Read it in 1 Kings 18:1-6. 00:40:41.07\00:40:44.61 The four judgments because Israel forsook the covenant. 00:40:44.64\00:40:47.81 And the famine and the pestilence in turn led to what? 00:40:48.38\00:40:52.35 To death and to the grave. 00:40:52.71\00:40:54.42 Fourth church, fourth horse. 00:40:56.12\00:40:58.45 Parallel. 00:40:59.25\00:41:00.59 For a time span of three and a half years, 00:41:01.69\00:41:04.99 Jezebel slaughtered whom? 00:41:05.19\00:41:07.46 The prophets of the Lord. 00:41:08.40\00:41:09.73 Is that what the papacy did? 00:41:09.76\00:41:11.23 Yes. 00:41:11.47\00:41:12.80 For not embracing her apostate syncretistic religion. 00:41:12.83\00:41:16.30 She taught God's servants to, what? 00:41:17.07\00:41:18.87 You can read this in the story of the fourth church. 00:41:18.91\00:41:21.74 She taught them to, what? 00:41:21.98\00:41:23.31 To fornicate and to practice idolatry. 00:41:23.58\00:41:26.18 Therefore, the blood of God's servants and prophets 00:41:28.18\00:41:30.69 cried out for what? 00:41:30.72\00:41:32.05 For justice. 00:41:32.75\00:41:34.19 Prophetically, this story of Jezebel was fulfilled 00:41:35.86\00:41:39.46 during the period of the dominion of the little horn 00:41:39.49\00:41:42.13 and of the beast who massacred the saints of the Most High 00:41:42.16\00:41:46.03 for three and a half prophetic years. 00:41:46.47\00:41:49.04 During this period, the apostate church employed 00:41:49.74\00:41:52.14 the sword of the state to kill dissenters. 00:41:52.17\00:41:55.94 As a result, the church fled to the wilderness 00:41:56.38\00:41:59.01 where God nourished her in exile. 00:41:59.58\00:42:01.98 Did this happen during the 1260 years? 00:42:02.02\00:42:04.65 Did Elijah flee to the wilderness 00:42:05.09\00:42:07.02 and God fed him there? 00:42:07.06\00:42:08.39 Yes. 00:42:09.79\00:42:11.13 How about the church during the 1260 years? 00:42:11.59\00:42:13.80 Did she flee to the wilderness and God fed her there? 00:42:13.83\00:42:16.40 See, this is typology. 00:42:17.60\00:42:19.07 As a result, the church fled to the wilderness 00:42:20.34\00:42:22.24 where God nourished her in exile. 00:42:22.27\00:42:24.27 This was the period when the two witnesses 00:42:24.64\00:42:27.11 prophesied in sackcloth. 00:42:27.14\00:42:29.18 Which would represent darkness, right? 00:42:29.48\00:42:31.51 For 1260 prophetic years, God shut up the heavens 00:42:32.31\00:42:35.48 and there was no rain. 00:42:35.58\00:42:36.92 As a result, there was spiritual famine and 00:42:37.69\00:42:39.62 pestilence in the church. 00:42:39.65\00:42:41.79 The famine and pestilence ultimately led to what? 00:42:41.89\00:42:45.26 To death and to the grave. 00:42:45.36\00:42:46.70 The same thing that happened literally in the days of Elijah 00:42:46.73\00:42:48.76 happened during the 1260 years. 00:42:48.80\00:42:51.53 This horse brought death and the grave for two reasons. 00:42:52.03\00:42:55.47 First, because there was spiritual starvation 00:42:55.84\00:42:59.21 and pestilence in the church. 00:42:59.24\00:43:02.01 And second, because people what? 00:43:02.11\00:43:04.41 People died by the sword. 00:43:04.51\00:43:06.18 During this period, the man of sin suppressed the Bible, 00:43:07.08\00:43:10.15 forbidding lay people to read it under the pain of death. 00:43:10.52\00:43:14.22 It was a capital crime even to have a Bible 00:43:14.92\00:43:18.23 in one's possession. 00:43:18.26\00:43:19.59 As a result, there was famine for the Word of God. 00:43:20.10\00:43:22.96 This famine led to spiritual pestilence, 00:43:23.53\00:43:25.97 and pestilence led to death and to the grave. 00:43:26.10\00:43:28.84 Are you catching the picture? 00:43:28.87\00:43:30.21 This was fulfilled exactly during the fourth period 00:43:30.84\00:43:34.91 of the history of the Christian church. 00:43:34.94\00:43:36.78 Notice how Ellen White describes this period. 00:43:37.45\00:43:39.88 "For hundreds of years the circulation of the 00:43:40.68\00:43:44.09 Bible was..." What? "...was prohibited." 00:43:44.12\00:43:47.16 So is there going to be famine if the 00:43:47.72\00:43:49.22 reading of the Bible is prohibited? 00:43:49.26\00:43:50.86 Yes. 00:43:50.96\00:43:52.29 "The people were forbidden to read it, 00:43:52.33\00:43:54.23 or to have it in their houses, 00:43:54.73\00:43:56.60 and unprincipled priests and prelates interpreted 00:43:57.10\00:43:59.83 its teachings to sustain their pretensions." 00:43:59.87\00:44:02.57 Speaking about the Waldensians, "From earliest childhood 00:44:03.54\00:44:06.61 the youth were instructed in the Scriptures and taught 00:44:06.64\00:44:10.68 to regard sacredly the claims of the law of God. 00:44:10.71\00:44:14.05 Copies of the Bible were..." What? 00:44:14.75\00:44:16.92 "...rare..." So was the bread scarce? 00:44:17.35\00:44:19.95 Yes. 00:44:20.39\00:44:21.72 "Therefore, its precious words were committed to memory. 00:44:22.16\00:44:25.63 Many were able to repeat large portions of both 00:44:25.86\00:44:29.20 the Old and the New Testament." 00:44:29.23\00:44:31.33 Notice that there was not an absence of bread. 00:44:31.37\00:44:34.67 Bread was expensive because it was rare. 00:44:35.30\00:44:38.77 Notice the statement from, Spirit of Prophecy, 00:44:40.34\00:44:42.38 volume 4, page 192. 00:44:42.41\00:44:44.28 "The work which the papacy had begun..." 00:44:44.75\00:44:47.15 That is, during the 1260 years. 00:44:47.45\00:44:49.42 "...atheism completed." This is the French Revolution. 00:44:49.82\00:44:52.72 "The one," that is the papacy, "withheld from the people 00:44:52.99\00:44:56.93 the truths of the Bible; 00:44:56.96\00:44:58.29 the other," the French Revolution, 00:44:58.79\00:45:00.76 "taught them to reject both the Bible and its Author. 00:45:01.03\00:45:04.27 The seed sown by priests and prelates 00:45:04.83\00:45:07.24 was yielding its evil fruit." 00:45:07.50\00:45:10.57 During this time, the vile office of the 00:45:12.91\00:45:15.11 Inquisition was established. 00:45:15.14\00:45:17.18 Which basically was the church using the power of the state 00:45:17.38\00:45:21.88 to punish dissenters from the church. 00:45:22.48\00:45:26.25 They slew those who studied and obeyed the Word of God. 00:45:27.62\00:45:30.79 During this time, the papal leaders behaved as wild beasts 00:45:30.83\00:45:34.70 toward God's people. 00:45:34.73\00:45:36.33 Notice how Ellen White describes the violence during this period. 00:45:37.10\00:45:40.84 "In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. 00:45:41.47\00:45:44.81 Its seat of power was fixed in the imperial city, 00:45:45.31\00:45:48.21 and the bishop of Rome was declared to be the head 00:45:48.74\00:45:51.38 over the entire church. 00:45:51.41\00:45:53.42 Paganism had given place to the papacy. 00:45:53.85\00:45:56.32 The dragon had given to the beast 'his power, 00:45:56.79\00:45:59.19 and his seat, and great authority.' 00:45:59.22\00:46:01.12 And now began the 1260 years of papal oppression 00:46:01.56\00:46:05.09 foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation. 00:46:05.13\00:46:07.83 Christians were forced to choose either to yield their integrity 00:46:08.20\00:46:12.67 and accept the papal ceremonies, and worship or to wear away 00:46:12.70\00:46:17.27 their lives in dungeons or suffer death by the rack, 00:46:17.31\00:46:21.54 the fagot, or the headman's ax. 00:46:21.58\00:46:24.91 Persecution opened upon the faithful with greater fury 00:46:25.15\00:46:28.25 than ever before, and the world became a vast battlefield." 00:46:28.28\00:46:33.52 That's what the church was like during the middle ages. 00:46:34.36\00:46:36.16 It's estimated that 50 million of God's faithful children 00:46:36.19\00:46:41.56 were martyred during this period. 00:46:41.60\00:46:44.07 Ellen White describes the Inquisition. 00:46:44.97\00:46:47.17 "In the thirteenth century was established that most terrible 00:46:47.50\00:46:50.74 of all the engines of the papacy; the Inquisition. 00:46:50.94\00:46:54.64 The prince of darkness wrought with the leaders 00:46:55.14\00:46:57.48 of the papal hierarchy. 00:46:57.51\00:46:59.25 In their secret councils Satan and his angels controlled 00:46:59.58\00:47:02.48 the minds of evil men, while unseen in the midst 00:47:02.52\00:47:05.79 stood an angel of God taking the fearful record of their 00:47:05.82\00:47:09.36 iniquitous decrees and writing the history of deeds 00:47:09.39\00:47:12.36 too horrible to appear to human eyes." 00:47:12.39\00:47:14.83 Is everything written in the scroll? 00:47:15.93\00:47:17.53 Without missing any details? 00:47:19.77\00:47:21.77 It's all there. 00:47:21.97\00:47:23.30 Are they going to have to face it again? 00:47:23.44\00:47:24.91 Are all these individuals who oppressed God's people 00:47:26.27\00:47:28.54 going to resurrect after the millennium? 00:47:28.58\00:47:31.65 Are they going to see the great panoramic view? 00:47:32.61\00:47:35.62 Are they going to see what they did? 00:47:35.82\00:47:37.19 Only now they're going to recognize that they were 00:47:37.89\00:47:40.62 on the wrong side, whereas the martyrs were on the right side. 00:47:40.66\00:47:45.19 She continues, "Babylon the great was 'drunken 00:47:46.56\00:47:50.50 with the blood of the saints.'" 00:47:50.53\00:47:51.87 And now notice she's going to allude to the fifth seal. 00:47:51.90\00:47:55.10 She's going to apply the fifth seal to 00:47:56.27\00:47:59.51 the aftermath of this period. 00:47:59.54\00:48:01.41 She says, "The mangled forms of millions of martyrs 00:48:02.04\00:48:06.11 cried to God for vengeance upon that apostate power." 00:48:06.35\00:48:11.82 What are the martyrs doing under the fifth seal? 00:48:12.15\00:48:14.79 They're crying out for justice. 00:48:15.26\00:48:16.83 So the martyrs are crying out after the papacy has slain 00:48:17.83\00:48:22.73 God's faithful people for the better part of 1260 years. 00:48:23.53\00:48:27.94 Is that the end of the story? 00:48:28.30\00:48:29.87 Is there going to be another group of martyrs? 00:48:30.94\00:48:33.24 Yes. Is it going to be the same system that will persecute them? 00:48:33.74\00:48:36.98 So how many stages does the fifth seal have? 00:48:37.15\00:48:39.91 Two. 00:48:40.12\00:48:41.45 And I see some with kind of glassy eyes. 00:48:44.19\00:48:46.45 The fifth seal has two stages, just like the sixth seal. 00:48:48.32\00:48:51.16 Because the martyrs that were killed during the 00:48:52.39\00:48:54.90 period of papal dominion, they're crying out for justice. 00:48:54.93\00:48:57.37 They're given a white robe, and God is saying, 00:48:58.13\00:48:59.80 "You're fine. Your case is okay. You're safe." 00:48:59.83\00:49:02.27 And they're told, "You're going to rest for a while 00:49:02.90\00:49:04.91 until the rest of the martyrs who are going to be killed 00:49:04.94\00:49:07.81 like you were is complete." 00:49:07.84\00:49:09.78 What will be the persecuting power that will persecute 00:49:11.25\00:49:13.92 God's people in the future? 00:49:13.95\00:49:15.42 The United States performing the will of 00:49:17.15\00:49:20.36 the Roman Catholic papacy using the civil powers of the world. 00:49:20.39\00:49:24.43 See, we haven't believed cunningly devised 00:49:25.63\00:49:27.73 fables as Adventists. 00:49:27.76\00:49:29.43 This is all, when we study contextually the sequence, 00:49:30.23\00:49:34.10 the Seventh-day Adventist belief system is rock solid. 00:49:34.57\00:49:37.27 The trouble is, people only pick a symbol here 00:49:38.14\00:49:40.51 and pick a symbol there. 00:49:40.54\00:49:41.88 They don't see all of the structure and the sequence, 00:49:41.91\00:49:44.35 how everything takes place in chronological order, 00:49:44.38\00:49:47.38 how one event connects with all other events. 00:49:47.42\00:49:50.49 So right after this period the martyrs have been slain, 00:49:52.29\00:49:56.16 and now they're crying out to God for justice. 00:49:56.79\00:49:59.76 Here's another statement, Great Controversy, page 78. 00:50:01.26\00:50:03.97 "The persecutions visited for many centuries upon 00:50:04.00\00:50:07.44 this God fearing people," the Waldensians, 00:50:07.47\00:50:09.87 "were endured by them with a patience and constancy 00:50:10.17\00:50:13.98 that honored their Redeemer. 00:50:14.01\00:50:15.54 Notwithstanding the crusades against them, 00:50:15.94\00:50:18.45 and the inhuman butchery..." 00:50:18.55\00:50:20.72 There you have the sword. 00:50:21.05\00:50:22.65 "...to which they were subjected, they continued 00:50:23.52\00:50:25.65 to send out their missionaries to scatter the precious truth. 00:50:25.69\00:50:29.39 They were hunted to death..." 00:50:29.76\00:50:31.46 What is it that hunts? 00:50:31.56\00:50:33.23 Animals hunt. 00:50:34.66\00:50:37.17 Human beings do too. 00:50:37.60\00:50:38.97 Human beings hunt animals, 00:50:39.00\00:50:40.34 but that's not what this is talking about. 00:50:40.37\00:50:41.84 "They were hunted to death, yet their blood watered 00:50:42.80\00:50:46.71 the seed sown, and it failed not of yielding fruit." 00:50:46.74\00:50:51.75 Now we're on the last page. 00:50:53.31\00:50:54.95 We're on a roll here. 00:50:55.25\00:50:56.58 So far so good? 00:50:57.89\00:50:59.29 Are you understanding the sequence of the seals? 00:50:59.99\00:51:02.46 How one event leads to another event. 00:51:03.12\00:51:05.49 So what is the relationship between the third, fourth 00:51:06.49\00:51:09.23 and fifth seals? 00:51:09.26\00:51:10.83 The darkness and scarcity of bread during the third seal 00:51:12.33\00:51:17.24 intensifies under what? 00:51:18.07\00:51:20.98 It intensified under the fourth and led to death and the grave. 00:51:21.64\00:51:28.55 Spiritual death because there's famine for the Word, 00:51:28.58\00:51:31.19 and literal death because the Inquisition killed all those 00:51:31.32\00:51:34.32 who were not in harmony with the church. 00:51:34.36\00:51:36.12 Concerning this period, Ellen White explained, 00:51:36.66\00:51:39.26 "The accession of the Roman Church to power 00:51:39.73\00:51:43.80 marked the beginning of the Dark Ages. 00:51:44.27\00:51:47.97 As her power increased..." 00:51:48.50\00:51:50.17 What color was the third horse? 00:51:50.47\00:51:52.44 Black. 00:51:54.11\00:51:55.44 Which is darkness, right? 00:51:55.74\00:51:57.35 Was there darkness under the third horse? 00:51:58.05\00:52:00.22 Oh yeah, but the darkness under the fourth intensified. 00:52:00.25\00:52:04.29 It got worse. 00:52:04.32\00:52:05.65 So it says, "The accession of the Roman Church to power 00:52:06.05\00:52:08.66 marked the beginning of the Dark Ages. 00:52:08.69\00:52:10.76 As her power increased, the darkness deepened." 00:52:11.29\00:52:17.10 So is the period of the fourth horse even a greater 00:52:18.27\00:52:21.97 apostasy than under the third horse? 00:52:22.00\00:52:24.24 It begins in the third horse, 00:52:24.27\00:52:26.07 but it deepens under the fourth horse, 00:52:26.11\00:52:29.41 the period of papal dominion. 00:52:29.44\00:52:31.88 When the church dies spiritually because she does not feed on 00:52:33.21\00:52:37.49 the Word of God, she begins to destroy those 00:52:37.52\00:52:41.52 who do not share her lack of spirituality. 00:52:41.56\00:52:44.33 Those who cannot defend their doctrines with the spiritual 00:52:45.49\00:52:48.40 sword will do so with the literal sword. 00:52:48.43\00:52:52.60 Does that do any good? 00:52:55.34\00:52:56.67 No, because the more they persecute, the more 00:52:57.64\00:52:59.71 of the faithful followers God has. 00:53:00.44\00:53:02.44 Because once again, I repeat, folks, that the reason why 00:53:03.31\00:53:07.35 the church grows in very difficult times 00:53:07.38\00:53:10.65 where there's persecution is because people see the 00:53:10.95\00:53:14.22 constancy and the serenity and the peace 00:53:14.26\00:53:17.26 of those who are being killed, they say, "How can these people, 00:53:17.66\00:53:20.83 you know, they're being killed, and they're singing." 00:53:20.86\00:53:24.33 Like Huss, his flesh was burning 00:53:24.87\00:53:27.90 and he was singing praises to God. 00:53:27.94\00:53:30.14 They say, "How can a person do this? 00:53:30.94\00:53:33.78 There must be something worth living for 00:53:35.18\00:53:38.18 if these people are willing to die for it. 00:53:38.51\00:53:40.65 So let's check it out." 00:53:42.05\00:53:43.69 And so that's why the word, martyr, means, witness. 00:53:44.85\00:53:48.02 The death of the martyrs was a witness. 00:53:48.76\00:53:50.99 A witness to God. 00:53:51.43\00:53:52.76 In other words, let me ask you, how many people do you think 00:53:53.29\00:53:57.63 are going to be saved by the story of 00:53:57.67\00:54:02.44 the martyrdom of Stephen? 00:54:02.47\00:54:03.81 Or the martyrdom of John the Baptist? 00:54:03.84\00:54:06.14 You know, John the Baptist, he ended up in prison. 00:54:07.48\00:54:10.01 And for a while he was kind of discouraged. 00:54:10.91\00:54:13.01 You know, he said, "Jesus didn't even come to visit me." 00:54:13.98\00:54:16.48 He was depressed, Ellen White says he was depressed. 00:54:18.25\00:54:20.59 But then the disciples, John the Baptist told his disciples, 00:54:21.02\00:54:27.10 "Go and ask Jesus if He's the Messiah that we're to expect." 00:54:27.13\00:54:31.17 So they went, and Jesus didn't answer. 00:54:31.53\00:54:33.54 He said, "Just watch what I'm going to do today." 00:54:33.57\00:54:35.54 And He healed the sick, He opened the eyes of the blind, 00:54:35.97\00:54:38.21 He healed the lepers, raised the dead, it says there. 00:54:38.24\00:54:40.94 And then at the end of the day Jesus says, 00:54:41.14\00:54:42.68 "Go tell John what you saw." 00:54:42.71\00:54:44.08 And so they go back, they say, "He raises the dead, 00:54:45.25\00:54:48.15 He performs these miracles. 00:54:48.18\00:54:49.52 He's got to be the Messiah." 00:54:49.55\00:54:50.92 And Ellen White says that John the Baptist died in peace 00:54:51.29\00:54:54.26 there in prison. 00:54:55.22\00:54:56.56 He was beheaded in prison. 00:54:56.59\00:54:58.76 How many people are going to be saved in the kingdom 00:55:00.20\00:55:02.06 as a result of the story of John the Baptist? 00:55:02.10\00:55:04.40 And Stephen? 00:55:04.43\00:55:05.77 And John Huss? 00:55:05.83\00:55:07.17 Multitudes of people are going to be saved 00:55:07.77\00:55:09.97 because of their witness. 00:55:10.27\00:55:12.27 Their willingness to stand for the Lord 00:55:12.57\00:55:15.58 though the heavens fall. 00:55:15.61\00:55:16.98 No matter what persecution comes. 00:55:17.28\00:55:20.48 Notice the last part here. 00:55:21.22\00:55:22.95 The martyrs whom the papacy slew during the period of 00:55:23.35\00:55:26.79 the fourth horse will now, not right now, 00:55:26.82\00:55:31.79 but after this takes place, they will cry out to God 00:55:31.83\00:55:36.50 to judge and avenge their death. 00:55:36.80\00:55:40.27 This is the period of the fifth seal, which is the topic 00:55:40.74\00:55:44.91 that we shall study in the next exciting episode. 00:55:44.94\00:55:49.04 Now, when will God answer, I'll getting ahead of myself 00:55:50.65\00:55:54.85 a little bit here, when will God answer the pleas of the martyrs? 00:55:54.88\00:55:58.59 When will God judge and avenge God's people 00:55:59.09\00:56:02.72 who have been slain because of their faith? 00:56:02.76\00:56:05.49 Revelation 19, the last verses that we're going to read, 00:56:05.99\00:56:09.06 Revelation 19:1-2. 00:56:09.10\00:56:12.73 This is in the context of the seventh plague. 00:56:13.70\00:56:17.21 And God is going to intervene. 00:56:18.61\00:56:21.18 By the way, is the harlot in the end time the same harlot 00:56:21.78\00:56:25.45 that persecuted God's people during the 1260 years? 00:56:25.48\00:56:28.52 Is it the same harlot? Yeah. 00:56:29.15\00:56:31.05 It's the papacy. 00:56:31.09\00:56:32.42 Notice Revelation 19:1-2. 00:56:32.95\00:56:35.62 "After these things, I heard a loud voice of a great multitude 00:56:35.89\00:56:40.16 in heaven saying, 'Alleluia!
