Well, here we are for a second dosage. 00:00:17.25\00:00:19.95 We want to finish our study of the first seal, the white horse. 00:00:21.92\00:00:25.85 And then we are going to take look at the red horse. 00:00:25.89\00:00:29.36 My goal is to finish our study of the red horse 00:00:30.53\00:00:32.93 in this second session. 00:00:32.96\00:00:34.30 And then this afternoon I'm hoping that we will be able to 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.80 do the third and fourth horse. 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.53 Because we have a lot to study. 00:00:40.24\00:00:42.40 We still have to study the entire interlude 00:00:42.44\00:00:44.54 of Revelation chapter 7. 00:00:44.57\00:00:46.14 And that's going to take us a while. 00:00:46.68\00:00:48.21 And then the fifth and sixth seals are particularly long. 00:00:48.51\00:00:53.01 So we're doing well. 00:00:53.05\00:00:55.35 But we want to make sure that we cover all of the material. 00:00:55.65\00:00:58.79 So let's have a Word of prayer, and then we'll finish 00:00:58.82\00:01:01.12 the first seal and get into the second. 00:01:01.42\00:01:03.76 Father in heaven, once again we begin this session 00:01:03.96\00:01:07.10 by pleading for the help of Your Holy Spirit. 00:01:07.13\00:01:09.86 Help us to rightfully divide the Word of truth. 00:01:10.07\00:01:13.13 And thank You for hearing us, 00:01:13.60\00:01:14.94 for we ask it in Jesus name, amen. 00:01:14.97\00:01:17.24 Okay, we're on page 146 of the syllabus. 00:01:18.87\00:01:21.94 And we are going to deal with the phrase 00:01:22.44\00:01:25.88 that the white horse goes out conquering and to conquer. 00:01:26.21\00:01:30.05 The horse and the rider. 00:01:30.09\00:01:31.49 The literal translation of the phrase, "overcoming 00:01:32.15\00:01:35.62 in order that he might..." 00:01:37.96\00:01:39.33 The literal translation of the phrase, "conquering 00:01:39.36\00:01:41.96 and to conquer," is really, "overcoming in order 00:01:42.00\00:01:44.73 that he might overcome." 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.17 And we must link this phrase with the messages 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.01 to the seven churches. 00:01:50.04\00:01:51.37 Have you noticed that with each church, 00:01:51.41\00:01:52.87 at the end it says, "he who overcomes"? 00:01:53.68\00:01:56.11 So the white horse are the overcomers, 00:01:56.98\00:02:00.35 in the churches specifically. 00:02:00.45\00:02:02.48 And of course, we're dealing with the first church 00:02:02.52\00:02:04.62 which is Ephesus, which is parallel to the first horse. 00:02:04.65\00:02:08.42 So the literal translation of the phrase 00:02:09.12\00:02:11.99 is, "overcoming in order that he might overcome." 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.56 We must link this phrase with the messages 00:02:15.20\00:02:18.17 to the seven churches, where at the end of 00:02:18.20\00:02:21.24 each message we find this dictum, "to him that overcomes." 00:02:21.27\00:02:26.07 We also have to link Revelation 5:5 00:02:26.51\00:02:30.21 where we are told that Jesus overcame. 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.52 And this is the conclusion. 00:02:34.35\00:02:36.08 As Jesus overcame while He was on earth, 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.02 and gained the victory in the end, so His church 00:02:39.89\00:02:43.96 must overcome during the period of the seven seals 00:02:43.99\00:02:46.83 and receive the crown of life at the end. 00:02:47.20\00:02:49.46 So Jesus on earth overcomes, 00:02:50.00\00:02:52.33 and gains the victory and goes to heaven, 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.90 God's people during the period of the seals overcome, 00:02:56.00\00:02:59.31 and then at the end they receive the reward like Jesus. 00:02:59.34\00:03:04.15 The Word for, "overcome," in Revelation 6:2 00:03:04.65\00:03:07.98 and in the context of the seven churches is the same. 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.45 Thus, the white horse represents God's faithful people 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.16 in the churches who overcome. 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.59 This indicates that the white horse represents 00:03:19.26\00:03:22.36 the faithful in the churches. 00:03:22.40\00:03:25.27 So the white horse symbolizes the apostolic church 00:03:25.93\00:03:29.67 that went worth under the guidance of the Holy Spirit 00:03:30.14\00:03:33.07 to defeat the kingdom of Satan 00:03:33.98\00:03:36.21 and to extend the kingdom of Jesus. 00:03:36.58\00:03:38.85 Acts 2:41 and Acts 4:4 exemplify these remarkable conquests. 00:03:39.58\00:03:44.75 You know, let's notice these verses that we find here 00:03:45.05\00:03:48.66 in Acts 2:41, 4:4, and 6:7 00:03:48.69\00:03:52.03 so you see the exponential growth of the church. 00:03:52.06\00:03:54.96 It says in Acts 2:41, this is on the day of Pentecost. 00:03:55.86\00:03:59.87 So the arrows caused an impact, didn't they. 00:04:03.30\00:04:06.04 So one baptism of three thousand people. 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.22 I would say that was a successful evangelistic 00:04:15.25\00:04:17.35 sermon by Peter. 00:04:17.39\00:04:18.85 Acts 4:4, just a little while later. 00:04:20.56\00:04:24.23 Notice once again the emphasis on the preaching of the Word. 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.20 That's the shooting of the arrows. 00:04:29.23\00:04:30.93 Wow! 00:04:38.34\00:04:39.67 So this is exponential growth. 00:04:39.71\00:04:41.71 And then Acts 6:7 doesn't even give us a number. 00:04:42.18\00:04:45.21 It simply says, "multiplied greatly." 00:04:45.25\00:04:47.65 So the church is conquering. 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.03 It's going out conquering and to conquer. 00:05:02.06\00:05:03.77 It is overcoming, in other words. 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.90 Let's notice the New Testament testimony about 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.84 how far the gospel reached. 00:05:09.87\00:05:12.37 God told, Jesus told the disciples to go to Jerusalem, 00:05:12.57\00:05:16.41 Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost ends of the earth. 00:05:16.44\00:05:19.61 Did that happen in the first generation? Absolutely. 00:05:20.22\00:05:23.69 Colossians 1:6 and verse 23 states, "All over the world 00:05:23.72\00:05:30.53 this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, 00:05:31.43\00:05:34.36 just as it has been doing among you since the day 00:05:34.83\00:05:38.10 you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth." 00:05:38.13\00:05:42.50 So notice, all over the world this gospel is bearing fruit, 00:05:42.54\00:05:46.14 says the apostle Paul. 00:05:46.47\00:05:47.88 And then in verse 23, "This is the gospel that you heard 00:05:48.71\00:05:52.55 and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, 00:05:53.08\00:05:57.22 and of which I, Paul, have become a servant." 00:05:57.92\00:06:01.56 So notice once again, all over the world, 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.03 every creature under heaven. 00:06:04.39\00:06:06.19 And then Romans 1:8. 00:06:06.53\00:06:08.60 In Acts 17:6, you know, this is the complaint 00:06:20.31\00:06:24.55 that is launched against those who are preaching the gospel. 00:06:24.58\00:06:28.08 "But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason 00:06:28.12\00:06:31.99 and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, 00:06:32.02\00:06:35.02 'These who have turned the world upside down 00:06:35.76\00:06:39.46 have come here too.'" 00:06:39.56\00:06:41.63 So it shows the tremendous conquest of the early church 00:06:42.33\00:06:46.70 just by reading the book of Acts. 00:06:46.74\00:06:48.64 Ellen White described it this way in, 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.44 Acts of the Apostles, page 593. 00:06:51.47\00:06:54.54 "The commission that Christ gave to the 00:06:55.51\00:06:58.61 disciples, they fulfilled. 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.98 As these messengers of the cross went forth..." 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.02 It's an interesting expression because it's 00:07:05.42\00:07:07.16 the white horse that went forth, right? 00:07:07.19\00:07:09.26 "...went forth to proclaim the gospel," 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.63 that is to shoot the arrows, "there was such a revelation 00:07:11.66\00:07:15.10 of the glory of God as had never before been witnessed 00:07:15.13\00:07:19.30 by mortal man. 00:07:19.33\00:07:20.67 By the cooperation of the divine Spirit, 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.74 the apostles did a work that shook the world. 00:07:23.77\00:07:27.31 To every nation was the gospel carried in a single generation." 00:07:27.34\00:07:34.12 Wow! It's amazing. 00:07:34.85\00:07:36.75 And it began in the upper room with 120. 00:07:37.15\00:07:41.22 120 active members. 00:07:41.92\00:07:43.96 Not bench warmers, not pew warmers. 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.80 Active members. 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.43 Now let's go to the next page which deals not only with 00:07:49.50\00:07:55.07 the white horse at the beginning of the Christian dispensation, 00:07:55.10\00:07:57.54 but also at the end. 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.27 During the Christian dispensation, 00:07:59.84\00:08:01.71 the faithful church fights a spiritual war against 00:08:02.34\00:08:06.98 spiritual enemies in the enemy's spiritual territory 00:08:07.02\00:08:11.95 with a spiritual armor and spiritual weapons. 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.59 Are you with me? 00:08:15.66\00:08:16.99 The purpose of the war is to conquer human hearts. 00:08:17.69\00:08:21.43 And you have texts for all of these. 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.60 We don't have time to read all the texts. 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.57 It involves God's people attempting to convince 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.80 the devil's soldiers to desert his army and join Christ's army. 00:08:29.20\00:08:33.58 So to speak, God's people proclaim that 00:08:34.31\00:08:37.25 if you want to be a winner, desert the devil's army 00:08:37.28\00:08:40.75 and come over to the Lord's side. 00:08:40.98\00:08:43.32 In other words, the idea is to say, 00:08:44.05\00:08:45.89 "You're with the losing army. 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.66 So just give up and come over here." 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.82 Revelation 19:11-21, which is the white horse at the end 00:08:50.46\00:08:54.10 of the book, describes the time when the sequence of the seals 00:08:54.13\00:08:58.10 reaches its climax. 00:08:58.13\00:08:59.47 See, there's a white horse at the beginning, 00:08:59.50\00:09:00.97 there's a white horse at the end. 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.67 When Jesus comes mounted on a white horse, 00:09:03.10\00:09:06.07 God will answer the pleas of all the martyrs 00:09:06.57\00:09:09.14 who cried out for justice. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.01 Revelation 19:11 again brings to view a white horse 00:09:11.51\00:09:15.72 and a rider who makes war against Satan and his armies. 00:09:15.92\00:09:21.19 The rider no longer has a stephanos, 00:09:21.22\00:09:23.49 because that's the word, "crown," in Revelation 6, 00:09:23.53\00:09:26.36 but rather a diademata, which is the crown 00:09:26.90\00:09:33.54 that a king wears. 00:09:33.57\00:09:34.97 The crown of the victor has become the crown of the king. 00:09:35.00\00:09:39.21 Revelation 19:11-21... 00:09:40.11\00:09:42.71 See, the white horse at the end of the book 00:09:43.04\00:09:44.88 describes not only a spiritual war, it describes a literal war. 00:09:44.91\00:09:49.05 Jesus is coming to deliver His people from the death decree. 00:09:49.08\00:09:52.32 So Revelation 19:11-21 depicts a literal war. 00:09:53.25\00:09:56.89 It will be a war between Christ and the heavenly armies 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.89 and the kings, the beast, and the false prophet 00:09:59.93\00:10:01.96 and their armies. 00:10:02.00\00:10:03.33 After the latter rain has fallen and the loud cry proclaimed, 00:10:03.57\00:10:07.24 the whole world will be on one side 00:10:07.44\00:10:09.97 or on the other side of the conflict. 00:10:10.01\00:10:12.34 Two armies, in other words, with two generals. 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.04 Christ on one side and the devil on the other. 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.51 On God's side are those who follow the Lamb. 00:10:17.81\00:10:20.25 On the other side are those who follow the beast. 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.08 At this point, probation will close and Satan will have 00:10:23.69\00:10:27.26 full control of the finally impenitent. 00:10:27.29\00:10:30.56 Satan will influence his armies to implement a literal 00:10:31.06\00:10:34.20 death decree against God's people. 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.67 Jesus will then literally take the battlefield for His people 00:10:36.77\00:10:42.24 and will literally destroy their enemies. 00:10:42.27\00:10:44.57 Are you seeing the difference between the 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.04 literal and the symbolic? 00:10:46.07\00:10:47.64 Ellen White wrote, "Every form of evil 00:10:49.68\00:10:52.51 is to spring into intense activity. 00:10:52.55\00:10:55.02 Evil angels unite their powers with evil men..." 00:10:55.55\00:10:58.45 See, the devil also has his horse, doesn't he? 00:10:59.32\00:11:02.69 He has his people. 00:11:03.49\00:11:04.83 And he guides that horse. 00:11:05.33\00:11:06.73 "Evil angels unite their powers with evil men, 00:11:07.76\00:11:10.37 and as they have been in constant conflict and attained 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.90 an experience in the best modes of deception and battle, 00:11:13.94\00:11:17.54 and have been strengthening for centuries, 00:11:17.87\00:11:20.38 they will not yield the last great final contest 00:11:20.48\00:11:24.55 without a desperate struggle. 00:11:24.58\00:11:26.85 All the world will be..." What? 00:11:27.32\00:11:29.62 "...on one side or the other of the question. 00:11:30.02\00:11:33.62 The battle of Armageddon will be fought..." 00:11:34.16\00:11:36.93 Of course, the culmination of Armageddon is when 00:11:37.13\00:11:39.83 Jesus comes on the white horse to deliver His people. 00:11:39.86\00:11:42.26 "The battle of Armageddon will be fought, 00:11:42.76\00:11:44.93 and that day must find none of us sleeping. 00:11:45.37\00:11:48.74 Wide awake we must be, as wise virgins having oil 00:11:49.14\00:11:53.81 in our vessels with our lamps. 00:11:54.01\00:11:56.68 What is this? Grace. Grace." 00:11:56.71\00:11:59.88 And then from volume 8, Manuscript Releases, page 347, 00:12:00.28\00:12:04.02 "The power of the Holy Ghost must be upon us, 00:12:04.05\00:12:08.49 and the Captain of the Lord's host will stand at the head 00:12:08.52\00:12:12.73 of the angels of heaven to direct the battle." 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.76 That's the final culmination. 00:12:16.40\00:12:18.30 So if we've been faithful in fulfilling the commission 00:12:18.83\00:12:22.77 of God during this period, even if a death decree 00:12:22.80\00:12:26.34 is given against God's people, Jesus will come 00:12:26.37\00:12:28.88 to deliver His people literally from literal death, 00:12:28.91\00:12:31.91 from the literal death decree. 00:12:32.25\00:12:33.82 Okay, that's the first horse. 00:12:34.82\00:12:37.35 The white horse: victories of the apostolic church 00:12:38.19\00:12:42.16 through the direction of Jesus Christ. 00:12:42.19\00:12:44.96 And so, the church is growing exponentially. 00:12:45.43\00:12:48.80 And Satan is losing his subjects. 00:12:49.56\00:12:52.03 So now Satan says, "I have to do something about this, 00:12:52.70\00:12:55.57 because I'm losing all the subjects. 00:12:56.34\00:12:58.07 All of my soldiers are abandoning my army 00:12:58.11\00:13:02.54 and they're joining the army of the Lord. 00:13:02.58\00:13:04.18 I've got to take care of this." 00:13:04.21\00:13:05.98 So now you have the red horse. 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.32 Notice Revelation 6:3-4. 00:13:09.72\00:13:12.82 "When He opened the second seal, I heard the 00:13:13.76\00:13:16.62 second living creature saying, 'Come and see.' 00:13:16.66\00:13:18.99 Another horse, fiery red..." 00:13:19.86\00:13:22.13 It's not just red, it's fiery red. 00:13:22.63\00:13:25.13 "...went out. 00:13:25.17\00:13:26.50 And it was granted to the one who sat on it 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.04 to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill 00:13:29.07\00:13:33.58 one another; and there was given to him a great sword." 00:13:33.61\00:13:38.41 Now what does this horse represent? 00:13:39.98\00:13:42.32 Well, the meaning is at the top of the page. 00:13:42.92\00:13:44.95 The red horse represents the persecutions against the church 00:13:44.99\00:13:48.56 by the pagan Roman emperors until the Edict of Toleration 00:13:48.76\00:13:53.73 by Constantine in the year 313. 00:13:53.76\00:13:57.07 And by the way, the second horse is parallel 00:13:57.70\00:14:00.54 to the second church. 00:14:00.57\00:14:02.47 Just like the first church, Ephesus, is parallel to the 00:14:03.20\00:14:06.98 first horse, the white horse. 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.98 Because the seals and the churches run concurrently. 00:14:09.11\00:14:13.82 We don't have time to get into that. 00:14:13.85\00:14:15.38 I did a series in Oklahoma City last year on the seven churches. 00:14:15.42\00:14:20.32 There's 14 one hour presentations 00:14:20.52\00:14:23.46 on the seven churches. 00:14:23.49\00:14:24.83 And there I draw some of the parallels 00:14:24.86\00:14:26.59 with the period of the seals. 00:14:26.63\00:14:28.63 Now going a little bit further down, 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.07 as mentioned before, this is the period 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.03 of the church of Smyrna. 00:14:33.07\00:14:34.70 There is much death language in the message 00:14:36.27\00:14:39.97 to the church of Smyrna, which is the second church. 00:14:40.01\00:14:42.74 So you have the second seal, bloodshed, 00:14:42.78\00:14:45.78 and you have the second church, 00:14:46.01\00:14:47.85 the emphasis on death in the second church. 00:14:48.25\00:14:51.12 Notice all the emphasis on death. 00:14:51.49\00:14:53.42 First of all, bittersweet myrrh; the meaning of the name, Smyrna. 00:14:54.39\00:15:00.03 And in the Roman Empire, myrrh was used to embalm the dead. 00:15:00.40\00:15:05.17 Jesus presented Himself to the church of Smyrna 00:15:05.73\00:15:08.34 as the one who was dead and is alive forevermore. 00:15:08.37\00:15:11.44 Jesus encouraged the members of Smyrna to be faithful 00:15:12.27\00:15:15.14 unto death and promised the faithful that they would not 00:15:15.18\00:15:19.75 be hurt by the second death. 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.78 Are you with me? 00:15:22.42\00:15:23.75 So the second church is all about the death of God's people. 00:15:24.09\00:15:27.19 The ten days, because there's mentioned ten days of 00:15:29.39\00:15:32.33 persecution in connection with the church of Smyrna, 00:15:32.36\00:15:37.40 the ten days are Diocletian's persecutions 00:15:37.43\00:15:41.00 from 303-313. 00:15:41.04\00:15:44.17 We apply the year/day principle to the ten days 00:15:44.37\00:15:47.08 that are mentioned there. 00:15:47.11\00:15:49.24 Ellen White's comments on the second seal... 00:15:49.81\00:15:52.45 Where are her comments on the first seal, by the way? 00:15:53.38\00:15:56.42 Where are Ellen White's comments on the first seal? 00:15:56.45\00:15:58.82 The entire book, Acts of the Apostles. 00:16:00.12\00:16:02.69 The comments on the second seal are found in, 00:16:03.93\00:16:06.73 Great Controversy, pages 39-48, 00:16:06.76\00:16:08.46 right after the chapter on the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:16:08.50\00:16:14.07 And some people wonder, why did Ellen White begin, 00:16:14.10\00:16:16.47 The Great Controversy, with the chapter on 00:16:16.67\00:16:18.64 the destruction of Jerusalem? 00:16:18.67\00:16:20.01 I'll just throw this out, we'll study it next year. 00:16:20.08\00:16:22.78 So make sure you sign up for next year. 00:16:22.81\00:16:25.15 I believe that the first trumpet is the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:16:26.51\00:16:30.55 I believe when you study the symbols it becomes very clear 00:16:31.55\00:16:34.52 that the first trumpet is the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:16:35.02\00:16:37.79 So Ellen White begins, The Great Controversy, 00:16:37.99\00:16:39.93 with the first trumpet. 00:16:39.96\00:16:41.30 And her comments, going back to this, her comments 00:16:41.90\00:16:45.73 on the second horse, the red horse or the second seal, 00:16:45.77\00:16:50.27 are found in, Great Controversy, pages 39-48. 00:16:50.31\00:16:53.44 And the title of the chapter is, 00:16:53.64\00:16:55.64 Persecution in the First Centuries. 00:16:55.74\00:16:58.01 Interesting. 00:16:58.05\00:16:59.38 The title of the chapter fits the theme of the period. 00:16:59.41\00:17:03.05 Now Revelation 12:11 describes the faithfulness 00:17:03.92\00:17:06.96 of those who overcame. 00:17:06.99\00:17:08.42 In fact, 12:11 uses the word, "overcome." 00:17:09.62\00:17:12.36 It says, "They overcame by the blood of the Lamb 00:17:13.03\00:17:16.93 and by the word of their testimony, 00:17:17.27\00:17:19.03 and they did not love their lives even unto death." 00:17:19.07\00:17:23.47 Now let's talk about the color red. 00:17:24.34\00:17:26.37 In the Bible, the color red represents what? 00:17:27.14\00:17:30.61 Bloodshed. 00:17:31.15\00:17:32.48 Even the grape juice that we use at communion 00:17:32.51\00:17:35.65 represents the blood of Christ. 00:17:35.68\00:17:37.75 And you can read these texts. 00:17:38.29\00:17:40.32 I just put texts in parentheses, because if we read 00:17:40.42\00:17:43.02 all the texts, we wouldn't get beyond the third seal. 00:17:43.06\00:17:45.53 But you need to look these up. 00:17:45.63\00:17:47.40 Don't just take this syllabus and, you know, 00:17:47.50\00:17:50.93 file it away somewhere. 00:17:50.97\00:17:52.43 Make sure you look up all of the verses, because 00:17:52.77\00:17:55.00 there's a lot of corroboration 00:17:55.20\00:17:56.64 for the points that we're covering here. 00:17:56.67\00:17:58.41 So when the sword takes away peace from the earth, 00:17:58.81\00:18:02.24 the result is what? 00:18:02.68\00:18:04.31 War and bloodshed. 00:18:04.35\00:18:07.08 Now what does this sword do in the second seal? 00:18:07.85\00:18:12.32 It takes away peace from the earth. 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.26 The sword takes away peace from the earth. 00:18:14.29\00:18:16.56 Now what does the sword represent? 00:18:16.86\00:18:19.03 Well, the sword in the Bible represents the Word of God. 00:18:19.83\00:18:24.77 Notice Hebrews 4:12-13. 00:18:24.90\00:18:28.30 And I know what you're thinking. 00:18:29.04\00:18:30.61 You're saying, "Well, does the Bible take away peace?" 00:18:30.64\00:18:34.21 We're going to come to that. 00:18:34.44\00:18:35.78 Hebrews 4:12-13. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.88 "For the Word of God is living and powerful..." 00:18:38.91\00:18:42.85 You see the principle that we're using? 00:18:46.35\00:18:48.29 Does the second seal explain what the sword means? 00:18:48.39\00:18:51.46 Does it say the sword means this? No, no. 00:18:52.49\00:18:55.10 So how do we determine it? 00:18:55.13\00:18:56.70 We go to other parallel passages that deal with the same subject. 00:18:57.33\00:19:00.70 Let me ask you, when we study the Scriptures, 00:19:19.62\00:19:21.42 you know, when we search the Scriptures, 00:19:21.62\00:19:23.16 and then the Scriptures start searching us. 00:19:23.19\00:19:25.36 So, you know, we start reading, for example, David. 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.93 You know, he committed this terrible act of 00:19:30.97\00:19:33.20 adultery and murder. 00:19:33.23\00:19:34.97 And Nathan comes to him with the Word of God and he says, 00:19:35.00\00:19:37.64 "You are that man." 00:19:38.11\00:19:39.67 Wow! 00:19:39.81\00:19:41.14 Suddenly David says, he kind of shakes and wakes up, 00:19:41.18\00:19:44.65 and he says, "That's me." 00:19:44.68\00:19:46.01 And so the Bible, when we read the Bible, 00:19:46.31\00:19:48.88 the Bible then starts reading us. 00:19:49.28\00:19:51.09 The Bible penetrates. 00:19:51.12\00:19:52.45 That's kind of like the arrows that we talked about 00:19:52.49\00:19:54.26 under the first seal. 00:19:54.46\00:19:55.79 Ephesians 6:17, the apostle Paul also 00:19:56.26\00:19:59.19 defined what the sword represents. 00:19:59.23\00:20:01.96 It says, "Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword 00:20:02.00\00:20:04.67 of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." 00:20:04.70\00:20:07.84 We also have a passage in the Old Testament. 00:20:08.40\00:20:11.94 Isaiah 49:2 00:20:11.97\00:20:14.04 Once again, the sword is related to what we speak, 00:20:14.24\00:20:18.28 to the mouth. 00:20:18.31\00:20:19.65 It says, "And He has made My mouth like..." What? 00:20:19.68\00:20:22.95 "...like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand 00:20:23.28\00:20:26.29 He has hidden Me, and made Me a polished shaft; 00:20:26.32\00:20:29.22 in His quiver He has hidden Me." 00:20:29.32\00:20:31.96 So it's interesting that he talks about a quiver 00:20:32.16\00:20:34.53 where arrows are, right? 00:20:34.56\00:20:36.23 So the sword represents the Word of God. 00:20:36.56\00:20:40.00 It comes forth from the mouth. 00:20:40.47\00:20:42.27 It's sharp, it penetrates. 00:20:42.30\00:20:44.14 It brings about change of life and conversion. 00:20:44.17\00:20:47.38 Correct? 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.01 So it brings peace, right? 00:20:51.05\00:20:52.51 Does the Bible bring peace? 00:20:53.62\00:20:55.22 Yeah, of course it brings peace. 00:20:55.42\00:20:57.19 Because it speaks of Jesus. 00:20:57.39\00:20:58.82 Notice Isaiah 9:6. 00:20:58.85\00:21:00.89 It says, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; 00:21:01.22\00:21:05.06 and the government will be upon His shoulder, 00:21:05.26\00:21:07.60 and His name will be called, Wonderful, Counselor 00:21:07.63\00:21:10.67 Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." 00:21:10.70\00:21:14.30 So Jesus brings peace. 00:21:15.14\00:21:16.81 The Bible is a Revelation of Jesus. 00:21:17.17\00:21:19.67 Notice once again Romans 10:14-15. 00:21:20.48\00:21:23.14 The gospel that comes from the Bible brings peace. 00:21:23.18\00:21:26.58 So why does this sword bring war? 00:21:26.82\00:21:29.38 Why does this sword bring bloodshed? 00:21:29.72\00:21:31.79 We're coming to that in a moment. 00:21:31.82\00:21:33.36 Notice Romans 10:14-15. 00:21:33.39\00:21:36.02 So it's talking about preaching the Word, right? 00:21:47.27\00:21:49.30 Where do we get the gospel from? 00:21:59.95\00:22:02.52 What's the source? 00:22:02.72\00:22:04.05 The Word, right? 00:22:04.15\00:22:05.62 And then we have Ephesians 6:14-15. 00:22:14.13\00:22:17.63 Here, the apostle Paul speaks about beautiful feet. 00:22:18.23\00:22:23.30 Now I don't have beautiful physical feet. 00:22:23.34\00:22:25.94 But my feet are beautiful in the sense that 00:22:26.47\00:22:28.54 the apostle Paul says. 00:22:28.58\00:22:29.91 And yours, I'm sure, also. 00:22:30.08\00:22:31.71 Blessed are the feet of those who go to proclaim the gospel 00:22:44.56\00:22:48.26 from the Word of God. 00:22:48.30\00:22:49.86 So the preaching of the Word, the sword is the Word. 00:22:50.80\00:22:53.60 And when the sword is used and you preach, 00:22:54.44\00:22:57.84 it brings what? 00:22:57.87\00:22:59.27 It brings peace. 00:22:59.57\00:23:00.94 Well, wait a minute. 00:23:01.31\00:23:02.64 Under the second seal, the sword doesn't bring peace. 00:23:02.98\00:23:05.78 It brings bloodshed. 00:23:06.38\00:23:08.15 So how do we understand this? 00:23:08.35\00:23:10.12 Let's go to the bottom of page 153. 00:23:10.99\00:23:13.29 This big question at this point is this: 00:23:13.89\00:23:16.09 If the sword here is the Bible, why does it take away 00:23:16.62\00:23:20.20 peace from the earth? 00:23:20.23\00:23:21.56 The answer is simple. 00:23:21.90\00:23:23.23 When sinners heed the message of the Bible, 00:23:23.73\00:23:26.60 it brings personal peace. 00:23:26.87\00:23:29.10 However, when sinners reject the message of the Bible, 00:23:29.44\00:23:33.24 they rise to take away peace from those who proclaim it. 00:23:33.54\00:23:38.55 That is to say, the sword of the Spirit 00:23:39.11\00:23:42.02 brings in its train the sword of persecution 00:23:42.05\00:23:46.39 from those who reject it. 00:23:46.49\00:23:47.92 Are you catching the picture? 00:23:47.96\00:23:49.36 The conquest of the first horse led to persecution 00:23:50.03\00:23:53.73 under the second. 00:23:53.76\00:23:55.10 Why do you have persecution under the second? 00:23:55.46\00:23:57.50 Because the devil is worried after the first. 00:23:57.83\00:24:00.07 The devil says, "I'm losing my people. 00:24:00.97\00:24:02.97 The gospel is being preaching to the entire empire. 00:24:03.37\00:24:05.74 I've got to do something about this. 00:24:05.97\00:24:07.61 I've got to kill them." 00:24:07.64\00:24:08.98 The devil, deeply concerned about the many defections 00:24:10.98\00:24:14.78 from his army, launched a deadly persecution against 00:24:14.82\00:24:18.69 those who were conquering the subjects of his kingdom 00:24:18.72\00:24:21.96 through the preaching of the gospel. 00:24:21.99\00:24:24.33 Now the key text to understand how the sword takes away peace 00:24:25.03\00:24:30.73 and the relationship with the Bible which brings peace 00:24:30.77\00:24:33.47 is these verses that Jesus spoke in Matthew 10:34-39. 00:24:33.67\00:24:39.57 And this doesn't sound like Jesus. 00:24:39.61\00:24:42.04 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth. 00:24:43.35\00:24:46.55 I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." 00:24:46.58\00:24:49.55 Wow! 00:24:50.59\00:24:51.92 So He came to take away peace. 00:24:51.95\00:24:53.66 Does that sound like Jesus? 00:24:54.32\00:24:55.72 What did Jesus mean? Let's continue reading. 00:24:56.89\00:24:59.49 So in what sense does the Word bring peace 00:25:31.76\00:25:35.60 and in what sense does the Word take away peace? 00:25:36.03\00:25:39.30 Let me give you an illustration. 00:25:39.87\00:25:41.44 I had the privilege of teaching theology 00:25:42.10\00:25:44.11 in South America in Colombia for about six years. 00:25:44.14\00:25:49.04 It was some of the most fruitful time in my ministerial life. 00:25:49.84\00:25:54.25 Because when you teach, you have to do a lot of research. 00:25:54.28\00:25:57.05 And so it was a big blessing. 00:25:57.09\00:25:58.75 And I enjoy doing research as a result of teaching. 00:25:59.15\00:26:03.29 But anyway, I had a student there. 00:26:03.99\00:26:06.46 Unfortunately, she was killed in an auto accident 00:26:06.83\00:26:09.43 several years ago. 00:26:09.46\00:26:10.80 Her name, Josefina Mendez. 00:26:10.83\00:26:12.57 And one day I sat down and I started talking with her, 00:26:13.70\00:26:16.24 and she told me her story. 00:26:16.27\00:26:18.44 She said, "Pastor, I want to tell you 00:26:18.94\00:26:21.68 why I came to this school." 00:26:21.71\00:26:23.28 So then she told me that she had gone to an evangelistic 00:26:23.68\00:26:26.51 campaign where a Seventh-day Adventist minister was preaching 00:26:26.72\00:26:30.62 and she attended all of the meetings, 00:26:30.95\00:26:32.55 and she was convicted that this was the truth. 00:26:32.89\00:26:35.06 And so, she decided that she wanted to get baptized. 00:26:35.79\00:26:38.19 She wanted to become a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:26:38.23\00:26:39.66 So she went home, told her parents who were 00:26:39.69\00:26:42.06 staunch Roman Catholics that she had been 00:26:42.10\00:26:45.07 going to these meetings, and she had understood the truth, 00:26:45.10\00:26:49.50 and she wanted to be baptized and join the 00:26:49.54\00:26:51.24 Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:26:51.27\00:26:52.64 Her parents said to her, "If you join that church, 00:26:53.41\00:26:56.31 you're not our daughter anymore. 00:26:56.85\00:26:58.31 We will totally disown you. 00:26:59.45\00:27:00.95 It's like you don't exist." 00:27:01.22\00:27:02.78 So the day of the baptism came and she had to make a decision 00:27:03.89\00:27:07.09 whether she was going to obey the convictions of her heart 00:27:07.12\00:27:12.13 based on what she had heard from the Word 00:27:12.16\00:27:14.23 through the impression of the Holy Spirit 00:27:14.26\00:27:15.93 or whether she was going to do what her parents said. 00:27:16.13\00:27:19.83 Well, bottom line, she decided that she would get baptized. 00:27:20.47\00:27:24.21 She told her parents, "I'm going to get baptized." 00:27:24.47\00:27:26.61 When she got home, all of her belonging were outside 00:27:27.04\00:27:29.61 the front door of her house. 00:27:29.64\00:27:31.08 And her mother and father were standing at the door 00:27:31.85\00:27:34.68 and they said, "Josefina, leave. 00:27:34.72\00:27:37.75 You're not our daughter anymore." 00:27:37.79\00:27:39.32 And that's how she ended up at the school. 00:27:40.22\00:27:41.92 Because she didn't have any place to go. 00:27:41.96\00:27:43.79 She later married a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. 00:27:44.89\00:27:48.63 One of the students there. 00:27:48.76\00:27:50.13 And they became workers in the cause, 00:27:50.50\00:27:51.97 very successful workers in the cause. 00:27:52.00\00:27:54.14 So did the Word bring peace to her? 00:27:55.30\00:27:58.97 Yeah, the Word brought peace. Of course it brought peace. 00:27:59.77\00:28:02.34 But also did it bring the sword? 00:28:02.51\00:28:05.78 Yes. 00:28:06.18\00:28:07.52 Because for those who are opposed to the Word, 00:28:07.55\00:28:11.05 they war against those who receive the peace of the Word. 00:28:11.39\00:28:14.79 I want you to notice that the sword also 00:28:15.72\00:28:18.49 represents something else. 00:28:18.53\00:28:20.16 In the Bible, the sword doesn't only represent the 00:28:20.26\00:28:22.60 Bible, it also represents the power of the state 00:28:22.63\00:28:26.03 to punish violations of civil law. 00:28:26.07\00:28:28.50 The punitive power of the state. 00:28:29.20\00:28:31.34 Notice Romans 13:1-5. 00:28:31.37\00:28:33.94 "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities." 00:28:34.78\00:28:37.75 The authority is the government, right? 00:28:48.19\00:28:50.19 See, the civil rulers. 00:28:57.97\00:28:59.40 In other words, do you want to not fear the civil power? 00:29:05.04\00:29:08.64 The wicked emperors, in the next section here, 00:29:34.00\00:29:36.97 the wicked emperors and their subjects illegitimately 00:29:37.01\00:29:41.18 use the sword of the state against God's faithful people 00:29:41.21\00:29:46.45 for preaching the gospel of the Bible. 00:29:46.48\00:29:48.82 Preaching from God's sword, in other words. 00:29:49.52\00:29:51.85 The preaching of the gospel brings peace to the receivers, 00:29:52.09\00:29:55.19 but awakens war from the rejectors. 00:29:55.52\00:29:58.69 Is this point clear? 00:30:00.00\00:30:01.33 Now, Ellen White explained the relationship between the 00:30:02.13\00:30:05.33 first seal and the second seal in, Great Controversy, page 46. 00:30:05.37\00:30:10.44 She's commenting on the second seal. 00:30:10.47\00:30:12.37 She's not quoting the verses. 00:30:12.61\00:30:14.08 She doesn't quote Revelation 6:3-4. 00:30:14.44\00:30:20.25 So you say, "Well, Ellen White didn't have anything to say 00:30:20.75\00:30:23.32 about the second seal." 00:30:23.35\00:30:24.89 Yes, she did. 00:30:25.35\00:30:26.69 She just doesn't quote the verses. 00:30:26.96\00:30:28.79 Look at the sequence. 00:30:28.82\00:30:30.53 Look at the order of events. 00:30:30.96\00:30:32.83 You'll find next in, Great Controversy, 00:30:33.03\00:30:35.26 that Ellen White mentions Constantine 00:30:35.46\00:30:37.57 after the persecution of the first centuries. 00:30:37.83\00:30:40.34 That's the third horse. 00:30:40.70\00:30:42.20 Then she goes on to speak about the rise of the papacy. 00:30:42.64\00:30:45.41 The fourth horse. 00:30:45.44\00:30:46.84 Then she speaks about the martyrs. 00:30:47.28\00:30:49.18 That's the fifth seal. 00:30:49.58\00:30:50.95 Then she speaks about the signs in the heavens. 00:30:51.41\00:30:53.72 The sixth seal. 00:30:53.75\00:30:55.08 And then on page 641 she deals with the seventh seal. 00:30:55.25\00:30:59.79 So we have to look at the structure. 00:31:01.22\00:31:03.22 Don't only, don't look only at the tree. 00:31:03.59\00:31:06.73 Look at the forest. 00:31:06.76\00:31:08.10 Get the big picture of how all of the pieces fit together. 00:31:08.66\00:31:13.30 Notice Ellen White's description. 00:31:13.34\00:31:15.24 And I put some explanations in brackets. 00:31:15.34\00:31:17.94 "The gospel is a message of..." What? 00:31:17.97\00:31:20.54 "...peace. 00:31:21.01\00:31:22.34 Christianity is a system that, received and obeyed, 00:31:22.58\00:31:26.05 would spread..." What? 00:31:26.08\00:31:27.52 "...peace..." 00:31:28.05\00:31:29.68 That's the second seal. 00:31:29.88\00:31:31.55 "...harmony, and happiness throughout the earth. 00:31:32.29\00:31:35.02 The gospel presents to them principles of life 00:31:35.32\00:31:37.89 that are wholly at variance with their habits and desires..." 00:31:37.93\00:31:41.86 And what happens as a result? 00:31:41.90\00:31:43.70 "...and they rise in rebellion against it." 00:31:43.73\00:31:46.50 So does the gospel bring peace? 00:31:48.27\00:31:50.11 Yes. 00:31:50.57\00:31:51.91 But those who want to reject it, what do they do? 00:31:51.94\00:31:54.04 They rise against it with a sword. 00:31:54.48\00:31:56.71 "They hate the purity..." 00:31:57.98\00:31:59.88 That would be the first seal, right? 00:31:59.91\00:32:01.62 Right? 00:32:02.65\00:32:03.99 "They hate the purity that reveals and condemns their sins, 00:32:04.25\00:32:09.12 and they persecute and destroy..." 00:32:10.53\00:32:12.56 That's the second seal. 00:32:12.86\00:32:14.20 "...those who would urge upon them it's just and holy claims. 00:32:14.46\00:32:19.33 It is in this sense, because the exalted truths it brings 00:32:19.73\00:32:28.24 occasion hatred and strife, that the gospel is called..." What? 00:32:28.34\00:32:33.21 "...a sword." 00:32:33.58\00:32:34.92 The second seal. 00:32:34.95\00:32:36.28 So Ellen White has not even quoted Revelation 6:3-4. 00:32:36.48\00:32:41.19 She hasn't quoted them. 00:32:41.49\00:32:42.82 Is she discussing the second seal? 00:32:42.86\00:32:44.69 Yes she is, very clearly. 00:32:45.13\00:32:46.93 So are the seals events that transpire in order 00:32:47.33\00:32:51.23 throughout Christian history? 00:32:51.27\00:32:52.73 Yes. 00:32:52.93\00:32:54.27 Because you have the introductory vision, 00:32:54.30\00:32:55.80 you have the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, 00:32:56.00\00:32:58.31 then you have the church going conquering and to conquer, 00:32:58.54\00:33:01.08 and Satan's reaction is persecuting 00:33:01.31\00:33:03.24 the church as a result. 00:33:03.28\00:33:04.61 So basically you have the seals are all interconnected. 00:33:05.18\00:33:09.45 One event in the seals leads to the next event. 00:33:09.48\00:33:12.75 Now let's notice the next statement from Ellen White. 00:33:13.52\00:33:17.59 "The powers of earth and hell arrayed themselves..." 00:33:18.19\00:33:23.40 This is war language, right? 00:33:23.43\00:33:25.10 "...arrayed themselves against Christ in the 00:33:25.33\00:33:27.47 person of His followers. 00:33:27.50\00:33:28.84 Paganism foresaw that should the gospel triumph..." 00:33:28.97\00:33:32.21 In other words, should the gospel gain the victory. 00:33:33.58\00:33:35.58 What did the first horse go out to do? 00:33:35.61\00:33:37.55 Conquering and to conquer. 00:33:38.25\00:33:39.61 Gain the victory. 00:33:40.15\00:33:41.52 So, "Paganism foresaw that should the gospel triumph, 00:33:42.12\00:33:45.85 her temples and altars would be swept away; 00:33:46.22\00:33:48.72 therefore she summoned her..." What? 00:33:48.92\00:33:51.19 Is that war language? Yes. 00:33:51.69\00:33:53.80 "...her forces to destroy Christianity. 00:33:53.83\00:33:56.30 The fires of persecution..." 00:33:56.33\00:33:58.33 The second seal. 00:33:58.37\00:33:59.70 "...were kindled. 00:33:59.73\00:34:01.07 Christians were stripped of their possessions 00:34:01.10\00:34:02.97 and driven from their homes. 00:34:03.00\00:34:04.51 They 'endured a great fight of afflictions.' Hebrews 10:32. 00:34:04.77\00:34:10.15 They 'had trial of cruel mocking's and scourging's, 00:34:10.41\00:34:13.75 yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonments.' Hebrews 11:36. 00:34:13.78\00:34:18.62 Great numbers sealed their testimony with their blood." 00:34:18.82\00:34:22.76 What color? Red, yes. 00:34:23.76\00:34:26.63 "Noble and slave, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, 00:34:26.66\00:34:30.90 were alike slain without mercy." 00:34:31.10\00:34:34.14 Are you catching the picture? 00:34:36.00\00:34:37.34 Great Controversy, page 41. 00:34:39.07\00:34:40.51 This is the chapter on the persecution 00:34:40.54\00:34:43.21 in the early century. 00:34:43.24\00:34:44.58 She's commenting on the second seal. 00:34:44.61\00:34:45.95 Never quotes the verses. 00:34:45.98\00:34:47.55 And by the way, in, Acts of the Apostles, she never quotes 00:34:48.65\00:34:51.15 the verses that speak of the first seal either. 00:34:51.45\00:34:54.06 But you know it deals with the apostolic conquest 00:34:54.76\00:34:57.03 because of the terminology. 00:34:57.06\00:34:58.83 "In vain were Satan's efforts to destroy the church by violence." 00:34:59.73\00:35:04.47 That would be the red horse, right? 00:35:05.83\00:35:07.47 "The great controversy..." 00:35:07.97\00:35:09.37 There you have war language. 00:35:09.40\00:35:10.91 "...in which the disciples of Jesus yielded up their lives 00:35:11.21\00:35:14.18 did not cease when these faithful standard-bearers..." 00:35:14.21\00:35:17.85 Soldiers have standards, right? 00:35:18.61\00:35:21.38 "...standard-bearers fell at their post." 00:35:21.68\00:35:24.65 That's also war language. 00:35:24.85\00:35:26.62 "By defeat, they..." 00:35:26.96\00:35:28.59 Oh. "By defeat, they conquered." 00:35:29.46\00:35:31.79 There you have that key word. 00:35:31.83\00:35:33.43 "God's workmen were slain, but His work went steadily forward. 00:35:35.46\00:35:40.04 The gospel continued to spread and the number of 00:35:40.07\00:35:43.51 its adherents to increase." 00:35:43.54\00:35:46.71 Because the church is going out conquering and to conquer. 00:35:46.74\00:35:50.68 She continues on page 42. 00:35:51.41\00:35:53.15 "Thousands were imprisoned and slain, 00:35:53.18\00:35:55.25 but others sprung up to fill their places. 00:35:55.88\00:35:58.89 And those who were martyred for their faith 00:35:59.15\00:36:01.49 were secured to Christ and accounted of Him as..." 00:36:01.52\00:36:05.06 Excuse me? "...conquerors." 00:36:05.09\00:36:07.50 See, look in the writings of Ellen White for the keywords. 00:36:07.53\00:36:13.37 If the verses aren't there, look for the keywords. 00:36:14.77\00:36:17.87 The expressions that she uses. 00:36:17.91\00:36:20.18 So once again, there were "accounted of him as conquerors. 00:36:20.71\00:36:24.91 They had fought the..." What? 00:36:24.95\00:36:27.12 "...the good fight." There's war language again. 00:36:27.58\00:36:30.02 "...they were to receive..." What? 00:36:30.05\00:36:32.89 "...the crown of glory..." That's the victor's crown. 00:36:33.19\00:36:36.26 "...when Christ should come." 00:36:36.36\00:36:38.73 Now I read this other statement before, but let's read it again 00:36:39.89\00:36:43.87 because it's very significant. 00:36:43.90\00:36:45.40 It connects the first seal with the second seal. 00:36:46.17\00:36:48.57 "The early Christians were indeed..." What kind of people? 00:36:49.24\00:36:52.07 Today people say, "I don't want to be peculiar. 00:36:53.71\00:36:56.11 I don't want to stick out. 00:36:57.11\00:36:58.58 I don't want to be different." 00:36:59.68\00:37:01.02 It's called peer pressure. 00:37:01.05\00:37:02.38 The Adventist Church has fallen captive to peer pressure. 00:37:03.32\00:37:06.32 We want to be just like all of the other churches. 00:37:08.49\00:37:10.83 You don't want to use the word, peculiar. 00:37:12.79\00:37:14.93 But Ellen White says early Christians were peculiar. 00:37:17.93\00:37:20.67 "Their blameless deportment and unswerving faith 00:37:21.60\00:37:24.17 were a continual reproof that disturbed the sinners..." What? 00:37:24.21\00:37:29.18 "...peace." 00:37:29.21\00:37:30.55 So would the gospel have brought them peace? 00:37:30.58\00:37:33.11 Yes. But when the Word was preached, they were disturbed 00:37:33.85\00:37:37.12 and they lost their peace. 00:37:37.15\00:37:38.52 "Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, 00:37:40.26\00:37:43.02 or honorary titles, they were a terror," the disciples were, 00:37:43.06\00:37:47.50 "to evildoers wherever their character and 00:37:47.53\00:37:50.77 doctrines were known. 00:37:50.80\00:37:52.13 Therefore, the wicked..." What? 00:37:52.60\00:37:54.04 Here comes the second seal. 00:37:54.64\00:37:56.60 The consequence. 00:37:56.64\00:37:58.24 "Therefore, the wicked hated them, 00:37:58.47\00:38:00.41 even as ungodly Cain hated Abel. 00:38:00.78\00:38:03.65 For the same reason that Cain slew Abel 00:38:04.08\00:38:06.35 did those who sought to throw off the restraint 00:38:06.55\00:38:09.08 of the Holy Spirit put to death God's people." 00:38:09.12\00:38:11.95 That's the second seal, right? 00:38:11.99\00:38:13.42 "It was for the same reason that the Jews rejected 00:38:14.26\00:38:17.06 and crucified the Savior; because the purity 00:38:17.09\00:38:19.89 and holiness of His character was a constant rebuke 00:38:19.93\00:38:23.47 to their selfishness and corruption. 00:38:23.50\00:38:26.84 From the days of Christ until now, His faithful disciples 00:38:27.17\00:38:30.41 have excited the hatred and opposition of those who 00:38:30.44\00:38:34.48 love and follow the ways of sin." 00:38:34.51\00:38:38.08 Now this pattern of revival, preaching the gospel, 00:38:39.98\00:38:47.12 and persecution as a result is found many places 00:38:48.26\00:38:52.39 in the Bible. 00:38:52.43\00:38:53.76 And in the last part of this lesson, I have several examples 00:38:54.00\00:38:58.13 of this pattern that we have where the church goes out 00:38:58.33\00:39:01.80 conquering and to conquer, it's preaching the Word, 00:39:01.84\00:39:05.41 it's bringing peace to many people, 00:39:05.64\00:39:07.28 opposition arises, persecution arises. 00:39:07.31\00:39:09.74 Revival, persecution. 00:39:10.15\00:39:12.08 I have five illustrations from other places in Scripture 00:39:12.61\00:39:16.32 of this pattern. 00:39:16.52\00:39:18.25 And then I'm going to read one final statement 00:39:19.22\00:39:21.26 which is, why is the church not persecuted today? 00:39:21.56\00:39:25.19 The first pattern is in Ezekiel 36 to 38. 00:39:27.20\00:39:30.77 Ezekiel 36:26-27 speaks of a great revival 00:39:31.57\00:39:36.04 among God's people, Israel. 00:39:36.07\00:39:37.87 It says, "I will give you a new heart..." 00:39:38.31\00:39:40.91 And I'm not going to read Ezekiel 37:11-14, 00:39:57.73\00:40:01.10 but we're told that as a result of receiving the Spirit, 00:40:01.30\00:40:04.37 these valley of dead bones who had no Spirit 00:40:05.70\00:40:08.94 suddenly form bodies and they're filled with the Spirit. 00:40:08.97\00:40:12.97 And by the way, what do the dry bones represent 00:40:15.08\00:40:17.75 that the Spirit comes into? 00:40:17.78\00:40:19.18 They represent the house of Israel, God's people. 00:40:20.38\00:40:22.82 Now what happens when God's people, who are dead 00:40:23.49\00:40:27.39 in trespasses and sins, suddenly are converted 00:40:27.42\00:40:31.13 and they're filled with the Holy Spirit, 00:40:31.16\00:40:33.26 what is there going to be? 00:40:34.03\00:40:35.36 Opposition. 00:40:35.76\00:40:37.10 And so you go to chapter 38 of Ezekiel, 00:40:37.80\00:40:40.20 and here you have Gog and Magog attacking Israel. 00:40:40.24\00:40:43.30 The very next chapter. 00:40:44.07\00:40:45.57 Why would they be attacking Israel? 00:40:46.64\00:40:48.34 Because they've been filled with the Spirit. 00:40:49.34\00:40:51.11 Because they've resurrected to new life. 00:40:51.98\00:40:54.12 Now the opposition comes. 00:40:54.62\00:40:56.32 Let's read Ezekiel 38:18-23. 00:40:56.89\00:40:59.39 There's many connections here with the book of Revelation 00:40:59.42\00:41:01.82 which we don't have time to get into. 00:41:01.86\00:41:03.69 This is immediately after the people are revived 00:41:04.76\00:41:07.30 by the Holy Spirit. 00:41:07.33\00:41:08.66 Is there going to be such an earthquake when Jesus comes? 00:41:36.83\00:41:39.66 Yes. 00:41:39.69\00:41:41.03 "The mountains shall be thrown down..." 00:41:41.06\00:41:42.46 Is this going to happen when Jesus comes? Yes. 00:41:42.50\00:41:45.33 Does a sword come out of the mouth of Jesus when He 00:41:53.44\00:41:55.54 comes on the white horse at the end? 00:41:55.58\00:41:57.28 Is that referred to in the seventh plague? 00:42:16.77\00:42:19.17 Yes. 00:42:19.60\00:42:20.94 Why does this persecution come, in chapter 38? 00:42:30.71\00:42:34.02 Because Israel has been revived, in chapter 36 and 37. 00:42:34.82\00:42:38.49 That's the first example. 00:42:39.59\00:42:40.96 Why did persecution arise against the early church? 00:42:41.22\00:42:44.86 Because they had experienced revival and reformation. 00:42:46.43\00:42:49.70 Notice the second example from the book of Joel. 00:42:50.37\00:42:53.20 One of these days I'm going to do a series on Joel. 00:42:54.14\00:42:56.84 That is a tremendous book. 00:42:57.51\00:42:58.84 It has many parallels to the book of Revelation. 00:42:58.87\00:43:01.04 It says in Joel 2:28-32, 00:43:01.08\00:43:04.65 you have the outpouring of the Spirit. 00:43:04.68\00:43:06.82 You remember that this is quoted by Peter 00:43:30.17\00:43:32.01 on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out. 00:43:32.04\00:43:34.81 So you have this great revival. 00:43:52.63\00:43:54.16 The Holy Spirit is poured out upon all flesh. 00:43:54.20\00:43:56.90 And what is the result? 00:43:57.60\00:43:59.00 In the very next chapter, the nations gather 00:43:59.03\00:44:02.20 against God's people. 00:44:02.24\00:44:03.87 Notice Joel 3:9. 00:44:04.61\00:44:06.78 And you're going to see the parallels with Revelation 14. 00:44:06.81\00:44:09.64 We're going to come to that. That's the last illustration. 00:44:10.61\00:44:12.98 So there's two armies here. 00:44:39.21\00:44:40.68 There's the wicked, and God has His armies. 00:44:40.91\00:44:43.98 And now Revelation 14. 00:44:54.56\00:44:56.29 By the way, what happens locally to literal Israel 00:44:56.59\00:45:00.53 and the literal valley of Jehoshaphat, in Revelation 00:45:00.56\00:45:03.30 happens globally. 00:45:03.33\00:45:04.67 All nations of the world come and they gather 00:45:04.70\00:45:07.57 outside the city, which represents the church. 00:45:07.60\00:45:10.01 And what is God going to do? 00:45:37.57\00:45:39.30 Persecution. 00:45:40.04\00:45:41.37 They've gathered for war against God's people. 00:45:41.40\00:45:43.61 Is God going to defend His people? 00:45:43.64\00:45:45.47 Yes. 00:45:45.51\00:45:46.84 So once again, revival in chapter 2, the end of chapter 2. 00:46:00.82\00:46:04.56 And what is the very next scene? 00:46:04.93\00:46:07.20 Persecution. 00:46:07.86\00:46:09.20 And deliverance. 00:46:09.23\00:46:10.57 The third example has to do with the day of Pentecost. 00:46:11.40\00:46:14.70 After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, 00:46:15.34\00:46:18.27 Peter and John brought healing to a paralytic. 00:46:18.67\00:46:23.61 After healing him, Peter presented a sermon 00:46:23.95\00:46:27.48 from God's Word at Solomon's Portico. 00:46:27.52\00:46:30.45 This grieved the religious leaders. 00:46:30.99\00:46:33.05 No peace with them. 00:46:33.09\00:46:34.42 This grieved the religious leaders, 00:46:34.46\00:46:36.36 but brought 5000 souls into the kingdom. 00:46:36.56\00:46:39.73 So were the religious leaders happy about that? 00:46:40.73\00:46:43.67 No. 00:46:43.87\00:46:45.20 Further preaching by Peter led to additional threats. 00:46:45.23\00:46:48.07 In Acts 5:12, further preaching led to imprisonment threats. 00:46:48.47\00:46:52.61 The Sanhedrin summoned Peter and John to trial again 00:46:52.97\00:46:56.04 where they spoke boldly. 00:46:56.28\00:46:57.71 Notice the number of times that it's emphasized that they spoke, 00:46:57.75\00:47:00.92 they spoke, they preached. 00:47:00.95\00:47:02.52 As a result, the leaders wanted to do what? 00:47:03.02\00:47:05.52 Kill them. 00:47:05.95\00:47:07.29 Did the sword bring peace to the religious leaders? 00:47:07.32\00:47:09.62 No. Would it have brought peace? 00:47:10.73\00:47:12.83 Yes. 00:47:12.86\00:47:14.20 As a result, the leaders wanted to kill them. 00:47:14.56\00:47:16.90 Then Gamaliel spoke some very wise words 00:47:17.40\00:47:19.90 where he used warfare terminology. 00:47:19.93\00:47:22.70 "And now I say to you, keep away from these men 00:47:24.87\00:47:27.71 and let them alone. 00:47:27.74\00:47:29.08 For if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing. 00:47:29.48\00:47:35.62 But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it. 00:47:35.88\00:47:39.95 Lest you even be found to fight against God." 00:47:40.36\00:47:44.39 Is that war terminology? 00:47:44.63\00:47:46.43 It most certainly is. 00:47:46.53\00:47:48.06 And after this, Peter and John were beaten. 00:47:49.03\00:47:51.00 And they said, "We consider it an honor 00:47:52.07\00:47:53.84 to suffer for the Name." 00:47:53.87\00:47:55.94 Are you seeing the pattern? 00:47:56.57\00:47:57.91 Revival, they receive the Spirit. 00:47:58.67\00:48:01.81 Immediately, what comes? They preach the Word, and what? 00:48:02.21\00:48:05.41 Persecution. 00:48:05.65\00:48:06.98 That's the third example. 00:48:07.02\00:48:08.35 The fourth example is the story of the stoning of Stephen. 00:48:08.58\00:48:11.49 The Sanhedrin arrested Stephen, God filled him with the Spirit. 00:48:12.65\00:48:17.16 You can read all these verses. 00:48:17.19\00:48:18.76 God filled him with the Spirit. 00:48:18.79\00:48:20.30 Stephen preached a powerful sermon describing the history 00:48:20.90\00:48:24.07 of Israel culminating with the coming of Jesus. 00:48:24.10\00:48:27.27 This enraged the leadership and they encouraged the mob 00:48:27.77\00:48:32.14 to stone the Lord's servant. 00:48:32.17\00:48:35.11 Seeing the pattern? 00:48:35.31\00:48:36.64 Revival, Holy Spirit, powerful preaching, persecution. 00:48:36.95\00:48:43.39 And then example number five. 00:48:44.79\00:48:46.65 This is in the future. 00:48:47.66\00:48:49.12 Immediately after the proclamation of the 00:48:49.16\00:48:51.33 three angels' messages, the world is going to be divided 00:48:51.36\00:48:55.23 into how many groups? 00:48:55.26\00:48:56.63 Two groups. 00:48:56.67\00:48:58.00 The wicked gather against God's people outside the Holy City. 00:48:58.03\00:49:00.94 The Holy City before the 1000 years is the church, 00:49:00.97\00:49:03.44 it represents the church. 00:49:03.47\00:49:05.11 However, the heavenly armies trample the winepress 00:49:05.37\00:49:08.41 and deliver God's people. 00:49:08.71\00:49:10.18 Have God's people been revived at this point? 00:49:12.05\00:49:14.32 Has the power of the latter rain fallen upon them. 00:49:14.35\00:49:18.25 Why are the wicked going to be enraged against God's people 00:49:18.89\00:49:22.36 at the end of time? 00:49:22.39\00:49:23.73 Because they've had revival. 00:49:23.76\00:49:25.86 And because of the revival, they're filled with the Spirit. 00:49:26.29\00:49:29.70 And because they're filled with the Spirit, 00:49:30.17\00:49:31.60 they proclaim the loud cry with power. 00:49:31.63\00:49:33.84 And that will awaken what? 00:49:34.07\00:49:35.67 Persecution. 00:49:36.14\00:49:37.47 And at the end, God will deliver His people from certain death. 00:49:37.97\00:49:41.71 It is significant that at the time of the apostle Paul, 00:49:42.81\00:49:45.71 the Roman Empire wielded the sword. 00:49:45.95\00:49:48.75 So it's interesting that it's talking about the persecutions 00:49:50.02\00:49:52.69 of Christians by the Roman Empire. 00:49:52.72\00:49:54.32 Notice that the Roman Empire had the sword. 00:49:54.56\00:49:57.69 The Roman Empire killed Peter by crucifixion, 00:49:58.96\00:50:02.26 Paul by decapitation, and James with the sword. 00:50:03.16\00:50:07.60 The slaying of James with the sword came immediately 00:50:08.20\00:50:11.01 after a description of the exponential 00:50:11.04\00:50:12.91 growth of the church. 00:50:12.94\00:50:14.28 You can read that in Acts. 00:50:14.31\00:50:15.64 Immediately after it speaks about the tremendous 00:50:16.21\00:50:18.51 growth of the church, James is killed with the sword. 00:50:18.55\00:50:22.85 Is there any relationship between the exponential growth 00:50:22.95\00:50:25.72 of the church and persecution? 00:50:25.75\00:50:27.36 Have you ever read in, The Great Controversy, 00:50:27.79\00:50:29.72 where Ellen White says that when the loud cry is proclaimed, 00:50:29.76\00:50:32.06 thousands upon thousands of ministers and members 00:50:32.36\00:50:35.50 of other churches are going to leave their churches 00:50:35.53\00:50:37.40 and join the remnant church? 00:50:37.43\00:50:38.97 Of course, that's going to make the clergy really happy. 00:50:39.27\00:50:41.44 It's going to infuriate the clergy. 00:50:44.21\00:50:45.97 And that's when the little time of trouble, persecution, comes. 00:50:46.91\00:50:49.28 So where is the key point here? 00:50:49.51\00:50:51.81 What is the key point here? 00:50:53.75\00:50:55.48 Why is there no persecution now? 00:50:55.52\00:50:58.02 Well, let's go in our syllabus to page 177. 00:50:59.02\00:51:02.66 Page 177. 00:51:04.13\00:51:06.09 By the way, we're not going to study the addendum. 00:51:07.46\00:51:10.30 Do you see the addendum there on page 161? 00:51:10.33\00:51:13.03 It's called, Chain Reaction. 00:51:14.70\00:51:16.57 We're not going to have time to study that, but you can read it. 00:51:16.60\00:51:19.34 Basically it shows that there are seven steps, 00:51:19.87\00:51:22.24 seven steps that eventually lead to persecution. 00:51:23.28\00:51:28.15 First of all, you have the conditions of the apostles 00:51:28.18\00:51:31.49 before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:51:31.52\00:51:33.69 They were fighting who was going to be the first, 00:51:33.89\00:51:35.72 and they were interested in, "What's in it for us," you know. 00:51:35.76\00:51:38.63 That's the first point. 00:51:38.66\00:51:40.50 But then what do they do? 00:51:41.23\00:51:42.66 They gather in the upper room. 00:51:42.70\00:51:44.10 They pray. 00:51:44.40\00:51:45.73 They settle their differences. 00:51:46.17\00:51:47.90 They lay all of their means at the foot of the Master. 00:51:48.54\00:51:51.37 In other words, they're emptied of self. 00:51:52.01\00:51:53.78 And then they receive the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:51:54.24\00:51:57.48 When they receive the power, 00:51:57.91\00:51:59.25 they preach the message with boldness. 00:51:59.28\00:52:02.25 And because they preach the message with boldness, 00:52:02.95\00:52:06.09 the church experiences exponential growth. 00:52:06.45\00:52:11.39 And Satan is losing his subjects. 00:52:12.09\00:52:14.60 And therefore, Satan causes persecution. 00:52:14.83\00:52:17.13 That is the sequence. 00:52:17.70\00:52:19.20 Now notice this statement from, Great Controversy, page 48, 00:52:19.47\00:52:24.17 on page 177 of your syllabus. 00:52:25.57\00:52:28.24 "There is another and more important question 00:52:29.61\00:52:31.95 that should engage the attention of the churches today. 00:52:31.98\00:52:35.02 The apostle Paul declares that 'all that will live godly 00:52:36.12\00:52:40.76 in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.'" 00:52:40.79\00:52:44.23 How many who live godly will suffer persecution? 00:52:45.29\00:52:48.16 Not some. All. 00:52:49.60\00:52:51.30 And you know, this time it might be psychological persecution. 00:52:52.43\00:52:57.04 Not necessarily physical persecution. 00:52:57.64\00:53:00.14 But there will be people who will oppose, right? 00:53:01.04\00:53:03.21 And she's quoting 2 Timothy 3:12. 00:53:04.81\00:53:08.25 Then she asks the question, "Why is it then that persecution 00:53:08.75\00:53:13.32 seems in a great degree to slumber?" 00:53:13.36\00:53:16.86 Why is there no persecution? 00:53:17.83\00:53:19.16 Well, because the Sunday law hasn't come yet. 00:53:19.19\00:53:21.56 Because the stars still need to fall, there's signs... 00:53:23.60\00:53:26.90 You know, the Pope needs to take the reins of civil power. 00:53:26.94\00:53:30.34 The United States has to join with the papacy. 00:53:30.91\00:53:32.94 That's why persecution hasn't come. 00:53:32.97\00:53:34.64 Well, why haven't all those things happened? 00:53:35.44\00:53:37.38 Notice, "The only reason..." 00:53:39.68\00:53:44.12 How many reasons are there why there's no persecution? 00:53:44.95\00:53:47.59 "The only reason is that the church has conformed to the 00:53:48.12\00:53:52.96 world's standard, and therefore awakens no opposition." 00:53:52.99\00:53:57.03 The devil has nothing to oppose. 00:53:57.83\00:54:00.14 Because the church has become like the world. 00:54:01.34\00:54:03.57 And then she continues, "The religion which is current 00:54:05.07\00:54:08.28 in our day is not of the pure and holy character 00:54:08.31\00:54:13.68 that marked the Christian faith in the days of 00:54:13.88\00:54:17.02 Christ and His apostles." 00:54:17.05\00:54:18.39 Is the church going to return 00:54:18.42\00:54:19.75 to the condition of the early church? 00:54:19.79\00:54:21.26 Yes it is. 00:54:21.82\00:54:23.16 Is it in that condition now? 00:54:24.16\00:54:25.79 Never has there been a period in the history of the 00:54:27.00\00:54:29.13 Adventist Church where we have so many divisions today. 00:54:29.16\00:54:31.90 We reflect the divisions in the political world in the church. 00:54:31.93\00:54:35.70 It's because the Holy Spirit is being withdrawn. 00:54:36.64\00:54:39.77 When the Holy Spirit is not in the heart, 00:54:40.51\00:54:43.18 the result is strife and fighting. 00:54:43.38\00:54:46.01 Like the disciples. They were all fighting. 00:54:47.15\00:54:49.52 Who's going to be the greatest 00:54:49.55\00:54:50.89 at the next constituency session? 00:54:51.09\00:54:53.09 "The religion which is current in our day is not of the 00:54:55.99\00:54:58.83 pure and holy character that marked the Christian faith 00:54:58.86\00:55:01.00 in the days of Christ and His apostles. 00:55:01.03\00:55:02.96 It is only because of the spirit of..." What? 00:55:03.70\00:55:06.20 "...compromise with sin, because of the great truths 00:55:06.74\00:55:11.47 of God's Word are so indifferently regarded, 00:55:11.51\00:55:16.18 because there is so little vital godliness in the church, 00:55:16.85\00:55:22.55 that Christianity is apparently so popular with the world." 00:55:24.89\00:55:29.89 And then she tells us how persecution will rise again. 00:55:30.96\00:55:36.40 "Let there be a revival of the faith and power 00:55:36.80\00:55:41.94 of the early church, and the spirit of persecution 00:55:41.97\00:55:46.47 will be revived, and fires of persecution will be rekindled." 00:55:46.51\00:55:54.25 By the way, on the next page, 00:55:56.62\00:55:59.29 even though this isn't from Ellen White... 00:55:59.32\00:56:01.49 Satan must know that the promised revival 00:56:02.32\00:56:06.73 is soon to occur because he is tearing the world apart 00:56:06.76\00:56:13.07 and he's tearing the church apart. 00:56:13.77\00:56:15.60 Further, he is causing a counterfeit revival 00:56:16.67\00:56:20.48 even in some Seventh-day Adventist churches, 00:56:20.94\00:56:23.81 with the objective of blaming a revived and reformed people 00:56:27.25\00:56:31.39 of the calamities that are falling upon the earth. 00:56:31.75\00:56:34.79 Just like Nero did. 00:56:34.82\00:56:36.16 So is the Christian world experiencing 00:56:37.59\00:56:41.73 a counterfeit revival these days? 00:56:41.76\00:56:43.77 Oh, signs and wonders, and jumping around, 00:56:44.47\00:56:48.54 and rolling in the aisles, and speaking in tongues. 00:56:48.57\00:56:51.51 And you know, "Contribute to my ministry 00:56:52.11\00:56:56.04 and you'll be very prosperous. 00:56:56.08\00:56:57.81 You know, you'll have lots of money that will come in." 00:56:57.85\00:57:00.45 You know, the so called prosperity gospel. 00:57:00.48\00:57:02.65 The Christian world more than ever really needs a revival 00:57:03.08\00:57:06.99 of primitive godliness. 00:57:07.02\00:57:08.36 The Adventist Church needs a revival of primitive godliness. 00:57:08.39\00:57:11.73 And that's what Elder Wilson has been emphasizing 00:57:11.76\00:57:14.06 all the time that he's been at the General Conference, 00:57:14.16\00:57:16.73 is the need for revival and reformation. 00:57:17.07\00:57:19.03 It will never come unless we do what the apostles did. 00:57:19.07\00:57:22.30 Gathered in the upper room, sat their agendas aside, 00:57:22.34\00:57:25.81 and said, "We need to receive the Holy Spirit. 00:57:26.44\00:57:29.54 We need to go out and proclaim the message 00:57:29.58\00:57:31.88 so that we can go home." 00:57:31.91\00:57:33.25 We've become too comfortable in this world. 00:57:33.95\00:57:36.02 And this world is not our home. 00:57:36.79\00:57:38.52 Our home is in heaven. 00:57:39.29\00:57:40.76 And we need to always remember that. 00:57:41.02\00:57:42.86 We might have a nice house, a nice car, 00:57:43.46\00:57:46.53 and money in the bank. 00:57:46.73\00:57:48.06 We are taking none of that to heaven. 00:57:48.66\00:57:50.53 Not a single bit of that are we taking to heaven. 00:57:51.40\00:57:53.94 So let's not focus on the things of this world, 00:57:54.14\00:57:56.60 but on the things of the world to come. 00:57:56.64\00:57:58.67 Some people say, "You're so heavenly minded, 00:57:59.07\00:58:01.54 you're no earthly good." 00:58:01.58\00:58:02.91 Well, it might be true that we're so earthly minded 00:58:02.94\00:58:04.95 we're no heavenly good. 00:58:04.98\00:58:06.31
