Welcome back. 00:00:16.41\00:00:17.75 Well, we are going to now study the first chapter 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.68 in our syllabus. 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.59 And we began in our last session just briefly, 00:00:25.79\00:00:29.09 but now we want to review what we did in the last part, 00:00:29.52\00:00:33.26 last presentation, and then move through this chapter. 00:00:33.50\00:00:37.83 It's found on page 3 of your syllabus. 00:00:37.87\00:00:41.40 Just reviewing, Jesus is our Creator. 00:00:42.24\00:00:46.27 And therefore, Jesus is responsible for our existence. 00:00:47.31\00:00:51.31 Not for our sin, but for our existence. 00:00:51.35\00:00:53.92 When Jesus created this world, He placed Adam as the king. 00:00:54.62\00:00:58.99 And his territory, of course, was planet earth. 00:01:00.46\00:01:03.53 But God established a condition. 00:01:04.29\00:01:06.16 And that was perfect obedience to His law. 00:01:06.43\00:01:08.90 Sinless perfection, if you please. 00:01:08.93\00:01:11.23 He said to Adam, "Obey and live, disobey and die." 00:01:11.67\00:01:18.27 And of course, Adam and Eve sinned. 00:01:18.94\00:01:22.54 And therefore, Satan took over the throne 00:01:23.14\00:01:26.72 and the territory over which Adam governed. 00:01:27.15\00:01:30.55 Therefore, the human race needed a Redeemer. 00:01:31.15\00:01:34.72 Someone who would pay the price to buy us back from slavery 00:01:35.19\00:01:40.43 who could pay the price to recover our lost possession. 00:01:41.03\00:01:45.23 But in order for a person to do this, 00:01:46.63\00:01:48.70 He needed to be our next of kin. 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.47 Now we're at the middle of page four. 00:01:52.47\00:01:55.14 Leviticus 25:25 tells us who only could 00:01:56.34\00:02:00.55 redeem a lost possession. 00:02:00.58\00:02:02.65 That is, territory. 00:02:03.22\00:02:04.65 That word, "redeem," in the Hebrew means, to buy back 00:02:20.27\00:02:23.97 by paying a price. 00:02:24.17\00:02:25.61 In other words, you pay a price and you buy back what was sold. 00:02:25.64\00:02:29.24 All human beings actually sold their possession 00:02:29.28\00:02:32.65 because we all sinned after Adam sinned. 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.52 And therefore, only a next of kin can 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.35 recover the lost possession. 00:02:38.39\00:02:40.59 Now what about if a person sold himself into slavery? 00:02:41.19\00:02:44.13 Individuals could not only sell their possessions, 00:02:44.16\00:02:46.63 they could also sell themselves into slavery. 00:02:46.66\00:02:49.93 Only a next of kin could pay the price to emancipate 00:02:50.40\00:02:54.84 people from slavery. 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.20 It says in Leviticus 25:47... 00:02:56.30\00:02:59.17 Once again, the word, "goel," which means to redeem 00:03:18.36\00:03:21.90 by paying a price. 00:03:21.93\00:03:23.43 Well that's a hypothetical statement because if he 00:03:40.82\00:03:42.78 sold himself into slavery, he couldn't very well 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.89 redeem himself. 00:03:45.92\00:03:47.49 So in order for an individual to redeem the lost possession 00:03:47.79\00:03:51.86 and redeem people who had sold themselves into slavery, 00:03:51.89\00:03:55.56 it needed to be a close relative or next of kin. 00:03:56.13\00:03:59.73 Within the human race, there was no one who could redeem 00:04:00.40\00:04:04.77 the lost possession and could redeem 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.81 the human race from slavery because all became slaves. 00:04:07.84\00:04:11.55 At the top of page 5, we find in Romans 3:10 and 23... 00:04:12.25\00:04:17.65 So this is the real reason why Jesus became a human being. 00:04:26.96\00:04:32.03 Because he had to become our next of kin. 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.27 You see, only a next of kin could redeem the lost 00:04:36.24\00:04:39.37 possession and people who had sold themselves into slavery. 00:04:39.41\00:04:42.48 So Jesus had to become our next of kin. 00:04:42.51\00:04:44.95 Let me ask you, when Jesus was in heaven 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.92 before His incarnation, was He our next of kin? 00:04:46.95\00:04:49.62 No. 00:04:50.25\00:04:51.59 Because He did not have human flesh. 00:04:51.62\00:04:53.36 He was not a human being. 00:04:53.59\00:04:54.92 He was from a different family. 00:04:55.16\00:04:56.76 He had to become our next of kin in order to redeem us from 00:04:56.79\00:05:01.36 slavery, in order to redeem the lost possession. 00:05:01.40\00:05:05.23 And so, now Jesus in heaven at a certain point 00:05:05.77\00:05:11.47 says to all of the heavenly angels, 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.38 "I am leaving heaven and I'm going to earth. 00:05:15.08\00:05:17.95 I'm going to become incarnate and I'm going to live there 00:05:17.98\00:05:20.88 for 30 years. 00:05:21.62\00:05:23.22 And I promise you that after 30 years I'll be back. 00:05:23.42\00:05:27.46 So make sure you prepare the party." 00:05:27.92\00:05:31.06 And so it says in John 1:14... 00:05:31.56\00:05:34.10 In other words, our next of kin. 00:05:36.73\00:05:38.67 Hebrews 2:14-16 also says that He became our next of kin. 00:05:48.31\00:05:52.55 And do what as a result of His death? 00:06:08.46\00:06:11.13 "...and release..." That means, redeem or recover. 00:06:11.40\00:06:15.57 Freedom. 00:06:15.84\00:06:17.17 So why did Jesus become our flesh and blood? 00:06:26.58\00:06:28.78 So that He could release us from bondage. 00:06:28.82\00:06:32.15 Those are the laws of redemption. 00:06:32.19\00:06:34.06 Now here's something interesting. 00:06:34.79\00:06:36.29 Jesus was both the Father of David and the Son of David. 00:06:37.33\00:06:41.03 Now how can you be someone's father and son at the same time? 00:06:41.46\00:06:44.23 Notice Revelation 22:16. 00:06:45.30\00:06:47.74 So Jesus is both the Father of David, He's the Root of David, 00:07:02.88\00:07:07.12 and He is also the Son of David, or the Offspring of David. 00:07:07.62\00:07:10.89 How is that possible that He's the Father and the Son of David? 00:07:10.93\00:07:13.76 Well He's the Father of David as the Creator, 00:07:13.80\00:07:16.10 but He's the Son of David because He became 00:07:16.13\00:07:18.83 our next of kin from the lineage of David. 00:07:19.13\00:07:22.04 The same is true with Abraham. 00:07:22.07\00:07:23.81 Jesus is the Father of Abraham and the Son of Abraham. 00:07:24.01\00:07:27.04 You say, "Really?" 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.61 Well, Matthew 1:1, the top of page 6... 00:07:29.84\00:07:33.55 But then Jesus, in John 8:58, says, 00:07:39.45\00:07:42.19 "Verily, verily I say unto you, before Abraham was, I AM." 00:07:43.59\00:07:47.73 So Jesus is the Son of Abraham because He's a man, 00:07:48.96\00:07:52.97 and He's the Father of Abraham because He was the Creator 00:07:53.37\00:07:57.41 of Abraham. 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.14 So Jesus had to become our next of kin 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.78 in order to redeem the lost possession 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.31 and in order to redeem us from the slavery 00:08:05.68\00:08:09.65 that we sold ourselves into. 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.05 Now in the next section, the two-fold mission of Jesus, 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.73 Jesus came to this world for two main reasons. 00:08:16.76\00:08:19.49 The sanctuary begins in the camp where sinners live. 00:08:20.23\00:08:24.43 Because Jesus lived for 30 years before He died. 00:08:24.83\00:08:28.50 So His life is just as important as His death. 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.37 Jesus had to live a perfect sinless life in our camp 00:08:32.54\00:08:36.31 to weave a robe of righteousness. 00:08:36.88\00:08:39.11 Every act of obedience of Jesus became a thread in the robe. 00:08:39.15\00:08:43.69 And when Jesus said on the cross, "It is finished," 00:08:44.45\00:08:47.39 He added the last thread to the robe of righteousness. 00:08:47.69\00:08:50.63 He had a perfect life of righteousness 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.23 that He could impute and impart to us. 00:08:53.26\00:08:56.06 After living a sinless life, He had to die to pay 00:08:56.83\00:09:01.47 the penalty for sin. 00:09:01.50\00:09:03.07 Only He who created all could offer to take the place of all. 00:09:04.07\00:09:11.28 Jesus is responsible for our existence, but not for our sin. 00:09:11.75\00:09:16.48 So these two functions of Jesus: His perfect life, 00:09:17.19\00:09:21.22 perfect robe of righteousness that He wove, 00:09:21.72\00:09:24.26 and His death is presented in Exodus 12:5-6, for example. 00:09:24.73\00:09:31.50 Speaking about the Passover lamb, it says, 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.60 "Your lambs shall be without blemish..." 00:09:34.64\00:09:38.27 That represents the perfect life of Jesus. 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.31 It's before the lamb is slain 00:09:40.34\00:09:41.84 it has to be a lamb with no blemish. 00:09:41.88\00:09:44.48 And now comes the second function of the Passover lamb. 00:09:52.72\00:09:55.22 Not only without blemish; that is the perfect life of Jesus. 00:09:55.26\00:09:58.03 Two functions. 00:10:04.37\00:10:05.70 A perfect lamb, unblemished, 00:10:05.93\00:10:09.10 and then the unblemished lamb is slain. 00:10:09.50\00:10:11.81 Jesus lived a perfect life, wove a robe of righteousness, 00:10:11.84\00:10:16.18 and then He paid for sin. 00:10:16.38\00:10:19.38 1 Peter 1:18-20 presents these two functions of Jesus. 00:10:19.81\00:10:23.89 It says there in verse 18... 00:10:24.29\00:10:25.72 So there you have one function of Jesus. 00:10:38.43\00:10:40.60 The shedding of His blood. 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.44 But there's another function. 00:10:43.10\00:10:44.67 So two functions. 00:10:50.88\00:10:52.28 His precious blood is shed, 00:10:52.38\00:10:54.65 and He is without blemish and without spot. 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.92 Did Satan know what Jesus had to come to do? 00:11:06.63\00:11:09.63 Did he demons know what Jesus was coming to this earth to do? 00:11:10.77\00:11:14.40 That He was coming to emancipate the human race 00:11:14.44\00:11:17.41 and to recover the lost possession? 00:11:17.44\00:11:19.24 Yes he did. 00:11:19.74\00:11:21.08 Notice this encounter, this is on top of page 7, 00:11:21.34\00:11:24.28 this encounter between the demons and Jesus. 00:11:24.31\00:11:27.25 They knew exactly who He was and why He was here. 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.05 In Mark 1:23-24 it says... 00:11:31.59\00:11:34.19 And now notice their big concern. 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.37 Satan and his angels knew exactly who Jesus was 00:11:54.54\00:11:57.88 and why Jesus had come. 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.52 And so, Satan, from the very start he says, 00:12:01.18\00:12:04.05 "I have to nip this in the bud. 00:12:04.09\00:12:07.42 I know who He is, why He came. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.99 He's going to live a perfect life, He's going to die for sin. 00:12:11.03\00:12:13.93 I have to keep that from happening." 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.26 And so, Satan now is going to use four methods to try and 00:12:17.17\00:12:21.77 prevent Jesus from living His perfect life 00:12:21.80\00:12:24.87 and from offering His life for sin. 00:12:24.97\00:12:28.81 And so, now Satan is going to be on the track of Jesus 00:12:29.88\00:12:34.88 24, 7, 365 1/4 days. 00:12:34.98\00:12:40.66 What was method number one? 00:12:41.92\00:12:44.26 Method number one was to attempt to kill Jesus 00:12:44.83\00:12:48.70 before He could voluntarily offer His life. 00:12:48.73\00:12:51.83 Revelation 12:2-3 says that when Jesus was born, 00:12:52.80\00:12:56.50 Satan was there ready to kill Him. 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.51 So Satan says, "I'll kill Him when He's born. 00:13:22.30\00:13:24.47 That way, He can't offer His life voluntarily 00:13:24.50\00:13:27.04 to pay for the sin of sinners." 00:13:27.30\00:13:30.54 Satan also tried to drown Jesus in a tempest. 00:13:30.94\00:13:34.71 Matthew 8:24, he knew Jesus was sleeping in the boat. 00:13:34.88\00:13:39.95 This was a storm out of season. 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.42 Ellen White describes it as a massive storm 00:13:42.45\00:13:44.92 such as never had been seen before. 00:13:44.95\00:13:46.99 And of course, Jesus calmed the storm. 00:13:55.63\00:13:58.23 Also, a mob tried to push Jesus over a cliff. 00:13:58.73\00:14:03.44 And Ellen White explicitly says that Satan was in that mob. 00:14:03.64\00:14:07.21 And there were actually angels disguised as human beings 00:14:07.71\00:14:11.11 encouraging people to throw Jesus over the cliff. 00:14:11.78\00:14:15.38 It says there in chapter 4:28 of Luke... 00:14:15.48\00:14:18.32 Some politically incorrect statements that Jesus made. 00:14:22.16\00:14:26.13 Several times during the ministry of Jesus 00:14:42.91\00:14:44.91 they tried to stone Jesus. 00:14:44.95\00:14:47.22 Of course, Satan was behind it. 00:14:47.25\00:14:48.75 Kill Him before He offers His life for sin. 00:14:48.92\00:14:52.29 It says there in John 8:58-59... 00:14:52.79\00:14:56.39 And this happened more than once. 00:15:05.37\00:15:07.04 Ellen White gives us an enlightening statement about 00:15:13.61\00:15:16.48 Satan's desire to kill Christ before He could offer His life 00:15:16.51\00:15:20.42 voluntarily for sin. 00:15:20.52\00:15:22.32 In the, Review and Herald, October 12, 1897, she wrote, 00:15:22.72\00:15:26.55 "Again and again He would have been killed 00:15:26.76\00:15:30.16 had it not been for the heavenly angels who attended Him 00:15:30.63\00:15:34.20 and guarded His life until the time when the case of the Jews 00:15:34.23\00:15:38.53 as a nation should be decided. 00:15:38.57\00:15:40.34 This human life must be kept by the power of God 00:15:40.87\00:15:45.17 until His day of work was ended." 00:15:45.37\00:15:49.31 So He was protected by God until the moment when He could 00:15:49.71\00:15:53.82 offer His life as a sacrifice for sin. 00:15:53.85\00:15:58.02 So His first method was to try and kill Jesus 00:15:58.05\00:16:01.46 before Jesus could offer His life voluntarily. 00:16:01.66\00:16:05.26 The second method that Satan used was to try and infect 00:16:05.79\00:16:09.50 Jesus with the virus of sin. 00:16:09.53\00:16:12.03 Because if Jesus became a sinner, 00:16:12.13\00:16:14.47 He would also need someone to redeem Him 00:16:14.50\00:16:17.37 from slavery and to recover the lost possession. 00:16:17.77\00:16:21.71 We all know about the temptations of Jesus. 00:16:22.71\00:16:25.25 Matthew 4:3, 6, 9, it says that Satan came to Jesus 00:16:25.51\00:16:31.22 three times with three temptation at the 00:16:31.25\00:16:33.39 beginning of His ministry. 00:16:33.42\00:16:34.76 And Jesus would not be infected. 00:16:35.02\00:16:37.73 All three times, Jesus answered, "It is written." 00:16:37.89\00:16:42.50 We have several verses in the Bible that indicate 00:16:42.96\00:16:45.83 that Jesus never sinned. 00:16:45.87\00:16:47.37 Hebrews 4:15, at the top of page 9. 00:16:47.57\00:16:50.81 So Jesus was tempted in all things, as we are, 00:17:05.05\00:17:08.59 yet Jesus never sinned. 00:17:08.69\00:17:10.93 Jesus did not become a slave. 00:17:10.96\00:17:12.96 Jesus did not lose His possession. 00:17:13.36\00:17:16.36 Hebrews 7:26 emphasizes the sinlessness of Christ as well. 00:17:16.73\00:17:21.34 "For such a High Priest was fitting for us, 00:17:21.57\00:17:24.31 who is holy, harmless, undefiled, 00:17:24.51\00:17:28.74 separate from sinners, and has become higher 00:17:28.94\00:17:33.31 than the heavens." 00:17:33.35\00:17:34.68 So once again, "...holy, harmless, undefiled, 00:17:34.72\00:17:38.72 and separate from sinners..." 00:17:38.92\00:17:40.62 Jesus never sinned. 00:17:40.66\00:17:42.29 In John 8:46, Jesus challenged those who were listening to Him, 00:17:42.69\00:17:46.53 "Which of you convicts Me of sin?" 00:17:46.63\00:17:50.13 And of course, the answer is, no one. 00:17:50.23\00:17:52.73 1 John 3:5 once again underlines the sinlessness of Christ. 00:17:53.30\00:17:58.61 1 Peter 2:21-22. "For to this you were called..." 00:18:08.42\00:18:14.42 So was Satan successful with his second method 00:18:33.01\00:18:36.11 to infect Jesus with the virus of sin? 00:18:36.54\00:18:39.81 No. Jesus had to weave a perfect robe of righteousness. 00:18:39.85\00:18:45.72 And once again, every act of obedience 00:18:45.75\00:18:48.16 was a thread that He added to the robe. 00:18:48.36\00:18:51.26 And when Jesus cried out on the cross, it is finished, 00:18:51.39\00:18:54.10 the robe was complete and available for every 00:18:54.36\00:18:57.83 single human being on planet earth. 00:18:57.87\00:19:00.60 But the devil used a third method. 00:19:01.20\00:19:03.07 And that third method was to give Jesus an easier way 00:19:03.44\00:19:10.18 to get the kingdom of the world back. 00:19:10.68\00:19:13.05 Matthew 4:8-9 speaks about the encounter of Jesus 00:19:13.98\00:19:21.69 with the devil on the mount of temptation, 00:19:21.72\00:19:23.93 the third temptation. 00:19:23.96\00:19:25.79 See, the devil is going to offer Jesus 00:19:26.63\00:19:28.50 an easier way of getting the kingdom back. 00:19:28.53\00:19:31.67 It says there... 00:19:32.03\00:19:33.37 In other words, he was saying to Jesus, 00:19:49.68\00:19:51.22 "You actually think You have to be here, and they mistreat You, 00:19:51.42\00:19:56.12 and You speak words to them, and they reject You. 00:19:56.32\00:19:59.79 And You think You have to go to Gethsemane 00:19:59.89\00:20:01.86 and bear the sins of the world upon Yourself. 00:20:01.90\00:20:04.53 And You're going to beaten and You're going to suffer." 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.94 He says, "No. 00:20:06.97\00:20:08.34 There's an easier way. 00:20:09.47\00:20:11.51 I'll give You all the kingdom back 00:20:12.04\00:20:14.74 as long as You just bow down and worship me just for a second." 00:20:15.38\00:20:18.61 He was offering Jesus an easier way of recovering what was lost. 00:20:19.31\00:20:25.42 But the devil used this method of giving Jesus 00:20:26.35\00:20:29.49 an easier way several times during His ministry. 00:20:29.52\00:20:32.03 In John 6:15 we find Jesus had already fed 5000 people 00:20:32.39\00:20:38.63 with five loaves and two fishes. 00:20:39.90\00:20:42.00 So now the multitude, instigated by Judas Iscariot, 00:20:42.30\00:20:48.54 I might say, tries to take Jesus by force to make Him a king. 00:20:48.58\00:20:53.95 In other words, Satan is saying, "Don't go to the cross. 00:20:54.48\00:20:56.62 There's a plan B, there's a much easier plan, 00:20:56.79\00:20:59.62 a better plan for You." 00:20:59.65\00:21:01.22 And so it says in John 6:15... 00:21:01.62\00:21:04.06 He said, "I have to go to the cross 00:21:16.00\00:21:19.37 to recover that which was lost, to emancipate the human race, 00:21:19.57\00:21:23.65 and to recover the kingdom. 00:21:23.85\00:21:26.41 I'm not going to take over the throne now 00:21:26.61\00:21:28.75 because that would defeat the purpose." 00:21:28.78\00:21:30.89 Satan even used Peter to try and distract Christ 00:21:31.69\00:21:35.62 from going to the cross. 00:21:35.66\00:21:37.06 In Matthew 16:22-23, it says... 00:21:37.43\00:21:42.56 Because Jesus has just said, "I've got to go to Jerusalem, 00:21:45.43\00:21:48.67 I'm going to be mistreated, 00:21:48.77\00:21:50.11 I'm going to die and resurrect the third day." 00:21:50.14\00:21:52.47 And Peter is indignant because Peter thinks that the Messiah 00:21:52.97\00:21:56.85 is going to sit on the throne in Jerusalem, 00:21:56.88\00:21:58.51 He's going to proclaim Himself king and rule the world. 00:21:58.55\00:22:01.78 Who was using Peter as an instrument? 00:22:17.17\00:22:19.40 Satan. 00:22:19.77\00:22:21.10 What was Satan trying to do? 00:22:21.14\00:22:22.47 To distract Jesus from going to the cross. 00:22:22.97\00:22:25.54 Even on the mount of transfiguration 00:22:32.28\00:22:34.48 after Jesus is transfigured by His Father, 00:22:34.85\00:22:37.69 as He will appear in His second coming, 00:22:37.72\00:22:39.85 after Moses and Elijah have come to speak with Jesus, 00:22:40.39\00:22:44.39 Peter still didn't get it. 00:22:45.06\00:22:46.56 Because Jesus at that point was on His way 00:22:47.26\00:22:49.36 to Jerusalem with the disciples. 00:22:49.40\00:22:50.73 He said, "I'm going to Jerusalem, 00:22:50.77\00:22:52.10 I'm going to suffer, and I'm going to die." 00:22:52.13\00:22:53.47 And so, Peter now makes an interesting suggestion to Jesus. 00:22:53.64\00:22:56.60 He still didn't get it. 00:22:56.64\00:22:57.97 Matthew 17:4, "Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, 00:22:58.81\00:23:01.94 'Lord, it is good for us to be here...'" 00:23:02.04\00:23:04.78 Not Jerusalem, here. 00:23:05.95\00:23:07.98 "Let's stay on the mountain. 00:23:15.19\00:23:16.96 Let's not go back to the valley." 00:23:16.99\00:23:18.63 Satan even uses good things to try and produce a bad result. 00:23:20.36\00:23:25.60 You remember, some Greeks came to Jesus 00:23:26.07\00:23:27.94 and they wanted an interview with Jesus. 00:23:27.97\00:23:29.97 They said, "We would see Jesus." 00:23:30.44\00:23:32.34 And I want you to notice John 12:20-24. 00:23:33.71\00:23:37.25 You know, you read Ellen White's comments about this, 00:24:10.65\00:24:12.95 the purpose of Satan was to distract Jesus from 00:24:13.68\00:24:16.79 going to the cross because these Greeks wanted Jesus 00:24:16.82\00:24:19.79 to go preach the gospel in Greece. 00:24:19.82\00:24:22.36 And Jesus is saying, "Listen, the time has not come 00:24:22.79\00:24:25.33 for Me to preach the gospel in Greece 00:24:25.36\00:24:27.50 and perform miracles in Greece. 00:24:27.53\00:24:29.06 The time has come for Me to die. 00:24:29.16\00:24:32.10 Because if I don't die, the seed remains alone. 00:24:32.60\00:24:36.14 But if I die and am buried, it will produce much fruit. 00:24:36.64\00:24:41.64 In other words, I will have many children redeemed as a result." 00:24:41.68\00:24:45.28 And of course, Jesus is speaking about His death. 00:24:45.38\00:24:47.85 In verses 31-33 it says, "Now is the judgment of this world..." 00:24:48.25\00:24:53.72 What was going to cast out the ruler of this world? 00:24:57.99\00:25:00.36 Was it Jesus taking over the throne in Jerusalem 00:25:00.40\00:25:02.93 that was going to cast Him out? 00:25:02.96\00:25:04.37 No. 00:25:04.53\00:25:05.87 What did Jesus have to do? 00:25:05.90\00:25:07.24 Verse 32... 00:25:08.44\00:25:09.90 And you know, there are statements in the New Testament 00:25:20.78\00:25:23.22 where it says that Jesus put His face towards Jerusalem 00:25:23.25\00:25:27.09 in the last journey. 00:25:27.99\00:25:29.32 In other words, He would not be distracted 00:25:29.36\00:25:31.63 from going to the cross because He knew that 00:25:32.56\00:25:35.20 only paying the price on the cross could recover 00:25:35.23\00:25:37.93 freedom for the slaves and a recovery of the possession 00:25:37.97\00:25:42.67 that had been lost. 00:25:42.70\00:25:44.07 Satan even used Judas to try and distract Jesus 00:25:44.91\00:25:49.41 from going to the cross. 00:25:49.44\00:25:51.48 In fact, you know, Judas did not betray Jesus 00:25:52.51\00:25:56.48 because he wanted Jesus to be killed. 00:25:56.52\00:25:58.42 You're aware of that, right? 00:25:58.45\00:25:59.79 Because if that was his intention, when they took Jesus 00:26:00.32\00:26:02.92 and He was suffering, and everything, 00:26:02.96\00:26:04.43 he would have been happy. 00:26:04.46\00:26:05.79 But he went and hung himself because his plan backfired. 00:26:07.13\00:26:11.70 His purpose was really to put the pressure on Jesus 00:26:12.10\00:26:16.30 so that Jesus would retaliate, 00:26:16.40\00:26:19.11 so that Jesus would take the throne 00:26:19.21\00:26:21.54 when they were mistreating Him. 00:26:21.58\00:26:22.98 In other words, the purpose was not to get Jesus killed. 00:26:23.01\00:26:26.15 The purpose was to put the pressure on Jesus 00:26:26.25\00:26:28.75 so that Jesus would take over the throne of Jerusalem. 00:26:28.78\00:26:31.69 Distracted from what He needed to do. 00:26:31.72\00:26:34.32 In John 13:1-2 it says... 00:26:34.59\00:26:36.79 Where did this plan that Judas wanted to implement, 00:26:49.87\00:26:52.77 where did it come from? 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.14 It wasn't Judas. 00:26:54.71\00:26:56.04 So none of the first three methods worked. 00:27:08.16\00:27:12.06 He wasn't able to kill Jesus before He gave up His life. 00:27:12.16\00:27:15.60 He was not able to infect Jesus with the virus of sin. 00:27:15.93\00:27:19.37 And he was not able to distract Jesus from going to Jerusalem 00:27:19.57\00:27:24.11 and suffering and dying. 00:27:24.14\00:27:26.17 But Satan used a fourth method. 00:27:27.11\00:27:29.24 And that was, he did his best to discourage Jesus 00:27:29.48\00:27:34.28 so the He would leave and allow the human race to perish. 00:27:34.32\00:27:38.59 Satan influenced the people of Jesus to reject Him, 00:27:38.92\00:27:43.09 the disciples to forsake Him, so that Jesus would say, 00:27:43.43\00:27:47.56 "What's the use? 00:27:47.60\00:27:49.13 I'm going back to heaven where I am appreciated." 00:27:49.16\00:27:53.07 Matthew 26:38 describes the sorrow of Jesus 00:27:53.74\00:27:58.84 as He was in Gethsemane. 00:27:58.87\00:28:00.81 It says, "Then He said to them," to His disciples, 00:28:01.01\00:28:03.28 "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. 00:28:03.31\00:28:07.32 Stay here and watch with Me." 00:28:07.35\00:28:09.65 And of course we're all acquainted with the prayer, 00:28:09.68\00:28:11.99 the agonizing prayer of Jesus raised up three times 00:28:12.02\00:28:15.66 to His Father in the garden of Gethsemane. 00:28:15.69\00:28:18.16 It's found in Matthew 26:39, 42, 44. 00:28:18.49\00:28:24.43 It says there, "He went a little farther..." 00:28:24.97\00:28:27.07 What was in the cup? 00:28:35.98\00:28:37.58 The wrath of His own Father. 00:28:40.12\00:28:42.45 The wrath of God. 00:28:42.48\00:28:43.82 Why would the wrath of the Father be against Jesus? 00:28:43.85\00:28:46.99 Because Jesus was bearing upon Himself 00:28:47.22\00:28:50.13 the sins of the whole world 00:28:50.63\00:28:52.29 to emancipate human beings from sin, from slavery, 00:28:52.73\00:28:58.23 and to recover the possession which was lost. 00:28:58.43\00:29:01.94 So Jesus says... 00:29:02.84\00:29:04.17 Could Jesus have picked up and gone back to His Father 00:29:28.53\00:29:31.60 if He had wanted to? 00:29:31.63\00:29:33.07 Yes, He could have. 00:29:34.00\00:29:35.44 So the devil is doing everything possible to discourage Him. 00:29:35.80\00:29:39.04 The devil is saying, "Look, nobody is going to accept You. 00:29:39.24\00:29:41.74 Your disciples left, one of Your disciples betrayed You, 00:29:41.78\00:29:45.25 another disciple denied You three times. 00:29:45.28\00:29:47.98 Come on, why are You going forward with this? 00:29:48.02\00:29:51.55 It's useless." 00:29:51.59\00:29:53.15 Ellen White wrote in, Desire of Ages, page 692, 00:29:53.62\00:29:56.73 "The fate of humanity trembled in the balance. 00:29:56.76\00:30:01.20 Christ might even now refuse to drink the cup 00:30:01.40\00:30:04.60 apportioned to guilty man. 00:30:04.63\00:30:06.57 It was not yet too late. 00:30:07.00\00:30:08.90 He might wipe the bloody sweat from His brow 00:30:09.17\00:30:11.94 and leave man to perish in his iniquity. 00:30:12.14\00:30:15.31 He might say, 'Let the transgressor receive the 00:30:15.48\00:30:19.15 penalty of his sin, and I will go back to My Father.'" 00:30:19.18\00:30:23.85 Jesus could have given up. 00:30:24.89\00:30:26.89 Satan did his upmost to discourage Him 00:30:27.29\00:30:30.13 from giving His life. 00:30:30.33\00:30:32.49 John 18:11 is a very interesting verse. 00:30:33.06\00:30:36.16 You know, the mother of these two disciples, 00:30:36.43\00:30:39.03 the sons of thunder, comes to Jesus and says, 00:30:39.07\00:30:41.07 "You know, in the kingdom I want my two precious little sons 00:30:41.10\00:30:44.34 to be one on the right side and the other on the left side 00:30:44.37\00:30:47.01 when You enter Your kingdom. 00:30:47.94\00:30:49.28 You can be in the middle, 00:30:49.31\00:30:50.65 but one on the right and the other on the left." 00:30:50.68\00:30:52.88 And Jesus says, "Are they able to drink the cup 00:30:53.52\00:30:55.95 that I'm going to drink?" 00:30:55.98\00:30:57.35 Let's pick up this in John 18:11. 00:30:57.85\00:31:01.92 Chapter 18:11, it says... 00:31:02.89\00:31:07.03 This is actually when Peter takes his sword out 00:31:09.06\00:31:11.53 and cuts the ear off the servant. 00:31:11.57\00:31:13.70 Who gave Him the cup? 00:31:20.08\00:31:21.41 Who gave Jesus the cup of His wrath? 00:31:23.58\00:31:25.78 The Father Himself. 00:31:25.88\00:31:27.22 By the way, when Jesus asked these two disciples, 00:31:27.48\00:31:30.39 "Are you able to drink the cup that I'm going to drink," 00:31:30.49\00:31:33.56 what was Jesus referring to? 00:31:33.59\00:31:35.22 He was referring to His Father giving the cup 00:31:35.79\00:31:38.63 of wrath for Him to drink for the sin of the world. 00:31:38.83\00:31:41.93 And what did the disciples say? 00:31:41.96\00:31:43.57 They said, "Oh, we can." 00:31:44.60\00:31:46.20 They didn't have the foggiest idea 00:31:46.33\00:31:48.30 what they were talking about, 00:31:48.34\00:31:49.87 until they saw Jesus agonizing in Gethsemane. 00:31:49.90\00:31:52.74 Then they understood it. 00:31:52.84\00:31:54.34 Now let's notice, Desire of Ages, page 753. 00:31:54.68\00:31:57.98 "Satan with his fierce temptations 00:31:58.35\00:32:00.52 wrung the heart of Jesus. 00:32:00.55\00:32:02.05 The Savior could not see through the portals of the tomb. 00:32:02.32\00:32:05.29 Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the grave 00:32:05.75\00:32:08.79 a conqueror, or tell Him of His Father's 00:32:08.82\00:32:11.36 acceptance of the sacrifice. 00:32:11.39\00:32:13.50 He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their 00:32:13.80\00:32:17.93 separation was to be eternal. 00:32:17.97\00:32:20.20 Christ felt the anguish which the sinner will feel 00:32:20.74\00:32:23.74 when mercy shall no longer plead for the guilty race. 00:32:23.94\00:32:27.24 It was the sense of sin, bringing the Father's wrath 00:32:27.61\00:32:30.51 upon Him as man's substitute that made the cup He drank 00:32:30.55\00:32:35.35 so bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God." 00:32:35.38\00:32:39.35 So what was Satan trying to do? 00:32:40.46\00:32:42.22 He was trying to discourage Jesus from going forward, 00:32:42.76\00:32:45.89 and saying, "What's the use? 00:32:45.93\00:32:48.16 Pick up and leave." 00:32:48.50\00:32:50.60 Hebrews 5:7 describes the agony of Jesus, 00:32:51.13\00:32:54.30 the torture that Satan is inflicting on Christ. 00:32:54.34\00:32:57.24 It says there... 00:32:57.64\00:32:58.97 Listen to the intensity of this. 00:33:03.01\00:33:04.81 Can you feel the intensity as you read that verse? 00:33:18.59\00:33:21.16 It's describing the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane. 00:33:21.20\00:33:24.33 In fact, His agony was so great that Luke 22:44 states... 00:33:24.83\00:33:29.74 How much agony must you have in order to sweat blood 00:33:38.81\00:33:42.88 instead of sweating water? 00:33:42.98\00:33:45.95 I mean, His agony was fierce. 00:33:46.69\00:33:49.72 Who do you suppose influenced the disciples to forsake Jesus? 00:33:50.49\00:33:54.76 Of course, Satan. Why would he do that? 00:33:55.13\00:33:57.27 Because He wanted to discourage Jesus. 00:33:58.00\00:34:00.07 "Not even the guys that were with You for 3 ½ years, 00:34:00.10\00:34:03.34 they're gone. 00:34:03.64\00:34:04.97 If You can't save them, who are You going to be able to save?" 00:34:05.64\00:34:08.61 It says in Matthew 26:56... 00:34:08.64\00:34:11.11 In fact, Satan influences Peter to deny Jesus three times. 00:34:15.22\00:34:20.76 "Even one of Your precious disciples is denying You." 00:34:20.79\00:34:24.23 It says there in Matthew 26:73-74, 00:34:24.73\00:34:29.56 "And Peter remembered the word of Jesus where He said to him, 00:34:29.60\00:34:32.80 'Before the rooster crows you will deny Me three times.' 00:34:32.90\00:34:37.67 So he went out and..." What? 00:34:37.71\00:34:40.01 "...he went out and wept bitterly." 00:34:40.04\00:34:43.18 By the way, do you know who was using Peter 00:34:43.38\00:34:45.61 as an instrument there? 00:34:45.65\00:34:47.02 Let's read Luke 22:31-32. 00:34:47.35\00:34:50.72 This is before Peter actually denied Jesus 00:34:50.75\00:34:53.42 before Jesus went to His passion. 00:34:53.46\00:34:55.92 It says, "And the Lord said, 'Simon, Simon, 00:34:55.96\00:34:58.39 indeed, Satan has asked for you 00:34:58.86\00:35:01.10 that he may sift you as wheat. 00:35:02.96\00:35:05.03 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail. 00:35:05.63\00:35:09.20 And when you have returned to Me...'" 00:35:09.50\00:35:11.54 "Return," means, when you have been converted. 00:35:11.57\00:35:14.34 "...strengthen your brethren." 00:35:14.64\00:35:16.48 And of course, Jesus reinstated Peter three times 00:35:16.51\00:35:19.55 after His resurrection. 00:35:19.75\00:35:21.12 "Peter, do You love Me?" "Peter, do you love Me?" 00:35:21.15\00:35:23.22 "Peter, do you love Me?" 00:35:23.65\00:35:24.99 He denied Him three times, 00:35:25.02\00:35:26.35 Jesus reinstates him three times, 00:35:26.39\00:35:28.42 saying, "Your sin is forgiven." 00:35:28.46\00:35:30.83 So Satan is doing his utmost to discourage Jesus 00:35:31.19\00:35:35.06 so that Jesus will leave. 00:35:35.10\00:35:37.27 He led the mob to beat Jesus mercilessly. 00:35:37.70\00:35:43.04 Mark 14:65 reads... 00:35:43.34\00:35:45.97 What is Satan's strategy here? 00:35:56.72\00:35:58.45 It's to discourage Jesus, saying, "What's the use? 00:35:59.29\00:36:02.32 Leave while You can." 00:36:02.36\00:36:04.09 Verses 16-20 of Mark 15 states... 00:36:04.96\00:36:08.40 In fact, do you know that even while Jesus 00:36:40.33\00:36:42.23 hung on the cross, Satan influenced the multitude to 00:36:42.26\00:36:45.37 try and entice Jesus to come down from the cross? 00:36:45.40\00:36:48.30 Notice Matthew 27:41-43. 00:36:49.50\00:36:52.57 "Likewise, the chief priest also, mocking with the 00:36:53.78\00:36:57.15 scribes and elders, said, 'He saved others, 00:36:57.18\00:37:00.65 Himself He cannot save. 00:37:00.85\00:37:02.38 If He is the King of Israel, let Him now...'" What? 00:37:02.42\00:37:05.59 "...come down..." 00:37:05.69\00:37:07.02 "Prove that You are the King of Israel." 00:37:07.06\00:37:09.12 Of course, Jesus is hearing that. 00:37:09.99\00:37:11.33 What is Satan doing? 00:37:11.36\00:37:12.69 He's daring Jesus to come down from the cross. 00:37:12.73\00:37:15.73 And so it says, "If He is King of Israel, 00:37:16.23\00:37:18.60 let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. 00:37:18.63\00:37:21.90 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now 00:37:22.10\00:37:25.41 if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 00:37:25.51\00:37:30.51 Now all during His ministry Jesus had said, 00:37:31.31\00:37:35.78 "I'm not alone. 00:37:36.42\00:37:37.75 My Father is with Me." 00:37:38.05\00:37:39.69 Notice John 8:29. 00:37:40.16\00:37:42.12 "And He who sent Me is with Me..." 00:37:42.72\00:37:44.59 "As He spoke these words, many believed in Him." 00:37:50.53\00:37:53.84 But now I want you to notice the change in His mode. 00:37:54.74\00:37:58.94 See, up to this point during His ministry, He says, 00:37:59.37\00:38:01.78 "The Father is always with Me." 00:38:01.88\00:38:03.55 But now Jesus on the cross, 00:38:03.58\00:38:05.15 He feels forsaken by His own Father. 00:38:05.25\00:38:07.32 What is Satan trying to do? 00:38:08.05\00:38:09.52 He's trying to say, "Listen, if You go through with this, 00:38:09.55\00:38:12.45 You're never going to see Your Father's face again. 00:38:12.49\00:38:14.39 You're going to lose fellowship with Him. 00:38:15.06\00:38:17.16 You're going to suffer eternal perdition. 00:38:17.19\00:38:20.10 You'll never see the Person that You love the most 00:38:20.13\00:38:22.66 in the entire universe." 00:38:22.70\00:38:24.20 It says there in Matthew 27:46, as Jesus there is hanging 00:38:25.47\00:38:30.27 on the cross, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 00:38:30.31\00:38:37.95 Are you catching the picture? 00:38:40.15\00:38:41.58 So what is the devil trying to do? 00:38:42.48\00:38:44.19 Did he know that Jesus had come to live a perfect life? 00:38:44.22\00:38:46.96 Oh, yes he did. 00:38:47.36\00:38:48.69 Did he know that Jesus could stand in the place of 00:38:49.12\00:38:52.69 all human beings because Jesus created all human beings? 00:38:52.73\00:38:55.96 That He was the only one? Yeah, Satan knew that. 00:38:56.56\00:38:59.00 The demons knew it. 00:38:59.03\00:39:00.37 We read the verse in the gospel of Mark 00:39:00.40\00:39:02.77 where they said, "We know who You are. 00:39:03.07\00:39:04.64 You're the holy One of God. 00:39:04.94\00:39:06.44 You're the One that we used to hang out with in heaven," 00:39:07.01\00:39:09.81 is what they're saying. 00:39:09.84\00:39:11.18 They knew who Jesus was and why Jesus came. 00:39:11.71\00:39:15.98 He had to live a perfect life and He had to die for sin. 00:39:16.02\00:39:19.22 And Satan said, "I'm going to use these four methods 00:39:19.42\00:39:21.92 to prevent Jesus from fulfilling His mission." 00:39:22.36\00:39:25.43 Number one, kill Him before He offers His life. 00:39:25.89\00:39:29.40 Number two, infect Him with the virus of sin. 00:39:29.86\00:39:33.84 Number three, offer Him a better path, an easier path 00:39:34.10\00:39:39.34 by taking over the throne of the kingdom. 00:39:39.97\00:39:42.28 And four, to discourage Him so much that He'll pick up 00:39:42.61\00:39:45.91 and He'll go back to heaven where He is appreciated. 00:39:46.21\00:39:50.82 But then Jesus gained the final victory. 00:39:52.05\00:39:56.19 In John 19:30 we find these words... 00:39:57.36\00:40:03.03 What did Jesus mean when He said, "It is finished"? 00:40:15.14\00:40:17.85 What was finished? 00:40:17.88\00:40:19.21 Provision for salvation was finished. 00:40:20.75\00:40:23.35 You know, there's been this big discussion 00:40:23.39\00:40:25.05 in the Adventist church of whether the atonement was 00:40:25.09\00:40:28.12 finished at the cross. 00:40:28.16\00:40:29.72 Incidentally, Desmond Ford just passed away. 00:40:30.39\00:40:33.70 And he was an individual who said that, you know, 00:40:34.20\00:40:37.07 the atonement was finished at the cross. 00:40:37.27\00:40:39.43 There's no atonement in heaven after Jesus goes back to heaven. 00:40:39.47\00:40:43.24 Well, Jesus said, "It is finished," on the cross. 00:40:43.94\00:40:48.44 Jesus finished His provision for salvation at the cross. 00:40:49.84\00:40:53.01 Had Jesus lived a perfect life that He could impute and impart 00:40:53.05\00:40:57.22 to us when He said, "It is finished" on the cross? 00:40:57.25\00:40:59.99 Yes. 00:41:00.02\00:41:01.36 Was Jesus now dying to pay the penalty for sin? 00:41:01.39\00:41:04.26 Yes. 00:41:04.29\00:41:05.63 Was provision for salvation absolutely finished? 00:41:05.66\00:41:08.86 Yes. 00:41:09.06\00:41:10.40 What was not finished? 00:41:10.43\00:41:11.83 What was not finished is Jesus interceding in heaven 00:41:12.03\00:41:15.64 for those who claim the benefits of what He did 00:41:15.67\00:41:18.71 while He was on earth. 00:41:18.74\00:41:20.08 You see, you have to claim individually His life 00:41:21.01\00:41:24.11 and His death for you. 00:41:24.15\00:41:25.48 The provision was complete. 00:41:26.61\00:41:28.62 But the application of the provision to individuals 00:41:29.45\00:41:33.36 who claimed Jesus still needed to be ongoing. 00:41:33.39\00:41:36.73 Are you with me? 00:41:36.76\00:41:38.09 So the atonement as provision was finished, 00:41:38.13\00:41:40.96 but not as application to individuals 00:41:41.00\00:41:43.67 who repent and confess their sins and trust in Jesus 00:41:43.70\00:41:47.80 as Savior and Lord. 00:41:47.84\00:41:49.60 And then Jesus pronounces these words, 00:41:50.41\00:41:52.71 Luke 23:46, the last thing that Jesus says on the cross, 00:41:52.74\00:41:59.98 "It is finished." 00:42:00.02\00:42:01.92 And then it says, "When Jesus had cried out..." 00:42:02.48\00:42:04.55 What did Jesus mean when He said, "Into Your hands 00:42:14.73\00:42:17.37 I commend My spirit"? 00:42:17.40\00:42:18.73 What Jesus is saying is, "Father, I commend My life 00:42:18.77\00:42:21.60 into Your hands because You have promised 00:42:21.64\00:42:23.57 that if I am faithful to You, You will call Me forth 00:42:23.87\00:42:27.61 from the grave and resurrect Me from the dead." 00:42:27.64\00:42:31.51 That's what He's saying. 00:42:31.58\00:42:32.91 You say, "Where do you get that from?" 00:42:32.95\00:42:34.88 Well, let's read this statement from, Youth Instructor, 00:42:35.65\00:42:38.32 May 2, 1901. 00:42:38.89\00:42:41.26 "He who died for the sins of the world was to remain in the tomb 00:42:41.79\00:42:46.59 for the allotted time. 00:42:46.63\00:42:48.26 He was in that stony prison house as a prisoner 00:42:48.90\00:42:52.73 of divine justice, and He was responsible to..." Whom? 00:42:52.77\00:42:57.94 "...to the Judge of the universe." 00:42:58.47\00:42:59.94 That is the individual He says, 00:42:59.97\00:43:01.48 "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit." 00:43:01.51\00:43:03.75 "He was bearing the sins of the world..." 00:43:04.51\00:43:06.45 Now listen carefully. 00:43:06.48\00:43:07.82 "He was bearing the sins of the world, 00:43:07.85\00:43:09.32 and His Father only could release Him." 00:43:09.52\00:43:12.95 Jesus was in the tomb, a prisoner of divine justice. 00:43:14.82\00:43:17.83 Only His Father could call Him forth. 00:43:18.09\00:43:21.43 That's why Jesus says, "Father, into Your hands 00:43:22.53\00:43:25.13 I commend My spirit." 00:43:25.17\00:43:26.50 He said, "I'm commending My life into Your hands, 00:43:26.53\00:43:28.94 because You've promised that if I was faithful, 00:43:28.97\00:43:31.41 if I live a perfect life and if I die for sin, 00:43:31.61\00:43:34.44 You promised that You will call Me forth from the grave. 00:43:34.54\00:43:37.35 I'm committing My life into Your hands." 00:43:37.38\00:43:40.62 Did Satan know that Jesus had predicted that He was 00:43:43.35\00:43:45.85 going to resurrect? 00:43:45.89\00:43:47.22 Oh, of course he did. 00:43:47.46\00:43:48.79 Why do you suppose he had this Roman guard 00:43:48.82\00:43:50.59 put at the entrance to the tomb? 00:43:50.63\00:43:52.19 Why do you suppose he had this huge stone rolled in front? 00:43:53.23\00:43:56.90 As if a little pebble of a stone could keep Jesus in the tomb. 00:43:56.93\00:44:00.07 He should have known better. 00:44:00.84\00:44:02.24 Because he knew what the power of Jesus was like. 00:44:02.27\00:44:05.04 In fact, there were demons present there 00:44:05.07\00:44:07.01 at the entrance to the tomb, 00:44:07.21\00:44:08.64 according to the spirit of prophecy. 00:44:08.68\00:44:10.75 He knew that Jesus had predicted that He was going to resurrect. 00:44:10.78\00:44:14.18 So very early on the first day of the week 00:44:15.02\00:44:17.12 two angels come down from heaven. 00:44:17.89\00:44:19.69 One angel rolls away the stone, the other angel stands 00:44:20.89\00:44:25.43 in front of the tomb. 00:44:25.46\00:44:26.80 And let's read the description that Ellen White gives 00:44:27.83\00:44:30.27 of this joyous event. 00:44:30.30\00:44:31.63 Early Writings, page 182. 00:44:31.67\00:44:34.17 "Then the angel from heaven, with a voice that 00:44:35.17\00:44:38.44 caused the earth to quake, cried out, 00:44:38.47\00:44:42.08 'Thou Son of God, Thy Father calls Thee! 00:44:42.18\00:44:46.21 Come forth.'" 00:44:46.85\00:44:48.28 Who called Jesus out of the tomb? 00:44:48.98\00:44:51.09 Who called Him out? 00:44:52.25\00:44:53.69 The Father. 00:44:53.72\00:44:55.06 You understand why Jesus said, 00:44:55.09\00:44:56.42 "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit"? 00:44:56.46\00:44:58.23 "I'm commending My life into Your hands." 00:44:59.36\00:45:01.30 Now He says, "You promised that if I was faithful, 00:45:01.33\00:45:05.37 that You were to call Me out." 00:45:05.90\00:45:07.24 So now He's going to be called out. 00:45:07.27\00:45:08.60 So the angel cries out, "'Thy Father calls Thee! Come forth.' 00:45:08.64\00:45:13.14 Death could hold dominion over Him no longer. 00:45:13.74\00:45:17.25 Jesus arose from the dead, a triumphant conqueror. 00:45:17.45\00:45:21.45 In solemn awe, the angelic host gazed upon the scene. 00:45:22.08\00:45:26.02 And as Jesus came forth from the sepulcher, 00:45:26.35\00:45:29.09 those shining angels prostrated themselves to the earth 00:45:29.39\00:45:33.16 in worship, and hailed Him with songs of victory and triumph." 00:45:33.19\00:45:38.50 And in a moment we're going to see what song they sang. 00:45:38.70\00:45:41.24 It's from Revelation chapter 12. 00:45:41.34\00:45:43.30 Now somebody might say, "But wait a minute, Pastor Bohr. 00:45:43.34\00:45:45.71 Doesn't the Bible say that Jesus would lay down His life 00:45:45.74\00:45:49.94 and He would take it up again? 00:45:49.98\00:45:51.38 That He had authority to lay it down, 00:45:51.41\00:45:52.98 He had authority to take it up again? 00:45:53.01\00:45:54.92 How is it that you say the Father was the one 00:45:55.98\00:45:57.99 who called Him from the tomb? 00:45:58.02\00:45:59.42 Well, let's read John 10:17-18. 00:45:59.95\00:46:04.03 We need to be careful about the way we read Scripture. 00:46:04.29\00:46:06.49 We need to read the entire verses, not just part. 00:46:06.53\00:46:09.80 It says in John 10:17-18... 00:46:10.70\00:46:13.34 "I have power..." 00:46:27.35\00:46:28.72 That's not a very good translation. 00:46:28.82\00:46:30.49 There are two words that are translated, "power," 00:46:30.52\00:46:32.25 in the King James Version and New King James. 00:46:32.52\00:46:35.36 The words, "dunamis," where we get the word, "dynamite," from. 00:46:35.46\00:46:39.83 That's not the word here. 00:46:40.03\00:46:41.36 And the word, "exousia," which really should be 00:46:41.56\00:46:43.77 translated, "authority." 00:46:43.80\00:46:45.50 In other words, the word that is used here is exousia. 00:46:45.90\00:46:48.90 Jesus is saying, "I have authority to lay it down, 00:46:48.94\00:46:52.71 and I have authority to take it up again." 00:46:52.91\00:46:56.58 So you say, "Jesus took up His life." 00:46:56.61\00:46:58.41 Yes He did. 00:46:58.45\00:46:59.78 But the only reason He could take up His life 00:46:59.85\00:47:02.25 He could come out with the life that was within Himself, 00:47:02.28\00:47:04.62 is because His Father gave Him permission to do it. 00:47:04.65\00:47:06.96 How do we know that? 00:47:08.62\00:47:09.96 We need to read the last part of verse 18. 00:47:09.99\00:47:12.23 It says, "This command I have received from My Father." 00:47:12.26\00:47:15.30 So in other words, the Father calls Him from the tomb, 00:47:16.67\00:47:19.13 and Jesus comes out of the tomb with 00:47:20.04\00:47:21.84 the life that is within Himself. 00:47:21.87\00:47:23.91 In fact, Ellen White says that when Jesus came forth 00:47:25.24\00:47:27.38 from the tomb, He said, "I am the resurrection and the life." 00:47:27.41\00:47:33.45 Wow! 00:47:33.75\00:47:35.08 The mighty conqueror. 00:47:35.22\00:47:36.55 He had gained provision to emancipate the slaves 00:47:36.58\00:47:40.49 and to recover, He recovered the lost possession. 00:47:40.59\00:47:43.83 Now something else happened at the resurrection of Jesus. 00:47:45.03\00:47:48.03 There was a group that resurrected with Him. 00:47:48.73\00:47:51.37 And I brought this in here because when we deal with the 00:47:52.23\00:47:55.74 introductory vision of Revelation 4 and 5, 00:47:55.77\00:47:58.34 we're going to come to the idea that some have that the 00:47:58.71\00:48:01.88 24 elders are those who resurrected with Jesus 00:48:01.91\00:48:05.25 as the first fruits that Jesus took to heaven when He ascended. 00:48:05.28\00:48:10.25 And we're going to see that is not a possibility. 00:48:10.69\00:48:13.42 So it says in Matthew 27:51-53... 00:48:14.06\00:48:18.76 So Jesus did not resurrect by Himself. 00:48:45.22\00:48:47.86 There was a group of individuals who resurrected with Jesus. 00:48:48.66\00:48:51.86 And of course, Ellen White, you know, gives us an 00:48:52.36\00:48:56.06 interesting description of who composed this group. 00:48:56.10\00:48:59.50 She actually says that they were martyrs from the first 00:49:00.14\00:49:03.17 who lived upon the earth up to the times of Christ. 00:49:03.20\00:49:06.57 And so, you know, we can speculate perhaps Abel 00:49:06.84\00:49:10.31 was among those who were the first fruits 00:49:10.88\00:49:13.68 that Jesus took to heaven. 00:49:13.72\00:49:15.05 Perhaps even John the Baptist who was beheaded 00:49:15.08\00:49:18.92 maybe was among that group. 00:49:19.19\00:49:20.76 We don't know, but Ellen White does say that they were martyrs 00:49:20.79\00:49:23.99 who had given their lives to be faithful to Jesus 00:49:24.03\00:49:27.36 from the beginning of time up to the times of Christ. 00:49:27.56\00:49:30.47 In other words, He rewarded them with the resurrection 00:49:30.97\00:49:35.20 and eternal life. 00:49:35.24\00:49:36.64 So they go for 40 days into the city and they give witness 00:49:36.94\00:49:42.58 to the resurrection of Christ. 00:49:42.61\00:49:43.95 Now can you imagine what it must have been like 00:49:43.98\00:49:46.48 if one of them was Abel, for Abel to appear 00:49:46.72\00:49:49.85 to the people in Jerusalem during 40 days? 00:49:50.25\00:49:53.42 All 15 feet tall, "Hi, I am Abel. 00:49:54.22\00:49:58.99 And when Jesus resurrected, I resurrected as well, 00:50:00.93\00:50:03.87 because He said, 'Because I live, you shall live also.'" 00:50:03.90\00:50:07.14 It must have been powerful. 00:50:07.80\00:50:09.30 And they didn't appear as ghosts or as spirits. 00:50:09.67\00:50:14.11 They appeared in flesh and blood. 00:50:14.21\00:50:16.48 People could actually touch them 00:50:16.51\00:50:18.55 and say, yeah, they're real individual people. 00:50:19.01\00:50:21.88 It must have caused a tremendous ruckus in the city of Jerusalem 00:50:22.48\00:50:27.06 with the people saying, "The Lord has resurrected, truly. 00:50:27.09\00:50:31.79 And all of these have resurrected with Him" 00:50:31.83\00:50:34.53 Now, all heaven sang when Jesus resurrected from the dead. 00:50:35.26\00:50:42.40 I want you to notice Revelation 12:10. 00:50:42.97\00:50:45.94 You know, usually we apply Revelation 12:7-12 00:50:47.14\00:50:52.51 to the original fall of Satan from heaven, 00:50:52.98\00:50:55.68 where it says, you know, there that the devil and Satan 00:50:55.72\00:50:59.29 was cast out with his angels. 00:50:59.32\00:51:00.96 We say, well that applies to the original casting out. 00:51:01.06\00:51:03.36 No, obviously it hints at the idea that Satan and his angels 00:51:03.39\00:51:08.13 were originally cast out from heaven. 00:51:08.16\00:51:09.86 But in context, that passage in Revelation 12 is talking 00:51:09.90\00:51:14.17 about the victory of Jesus on the cross over Satan. 00:51:14.20\00:51:17.74 We're not going to get into that right now. 00:51:17.77\00:51:19.37 I've dealt with that in other presentations. 00:51:19.41\00:51:22.21 But Revelation 12:10 is the verse that was sung, 00:51:22.41\00:51:27.88 we're going to see in a moment, when Jesus came forth 00:51:27.92\00:51:30.82 from the grave when Jesus resurrected from the dead. 00:51:31.25\00:51:34.56 It says there in Revelation 12:10... 00:51:35.12\00:51:37.19 Now in what sense was Satan cast down 00:51:55.64\00:51:59.18 when Jesus died on the cross? 00:51:59.28\00:52:01.18 There was an original, don't get me wrong, 00:52:01.62\00:52:03.28 there was an original casting down. 00:52:03.32\00:52:05.89 Okay? Satan and his angels were expelled from heaven. 00:52:05.92\00:52:09.39 But at the cross Satan was expelled also. 00:52:09.42\00:52:14.13 Because in John 12 Jesus says, "The ruler of this world... 00:52:14.56\00:52:19.13 Now is the judgment, now the ruler of this world 00:52:19.17\00:52:22.47 will be cast out." 00:52:22.50\00:52:23.84 And He was speaking about His death. 00:52:23.87\00:52:25.21 In what sense was Satan cast out from heaven when Jesus died? 00:52:25.47\00:52:28.84 He was cast out from heaven as the 00:52:29.38\00:52:31.01 representative of planet earth. 00:52:31.05\00:52:32.95 You see, who represented planet earth up to the time that 00:52:34.32\00:52:36.89 Jesus lived His perfect life and died for sin? 00:52:36.92\00:52:39.29 Satan had stolen Adam's throne and Adam's territory. 00:52:39.92\00:52:43.22 But when Jesus resurrects from the dead, 00:52:43.56\00:52:45.89 He now has the throne, and the territory is His. 00:52:46.46\00:52:50.97 Is Satan going to give up the territory without a fight? 00:52:51.47\00:52:54.34 No, that's why you have the conflicts in the book of Acts. 00:52:54.74\00:52:57.17 Satan is saying, "I know the territory is no longer mine, 00:52:57.21\00:53:00.44 but He's going to have to come and get it." 00:53:00.48\00:53:02.18 And that's the struggle of the end time. 00:53:03.11\00:53:05.41 Satan knows that he's going to lose his kingdom, 00:53:05.51\00:53:07.62 and he's going to fight for every inch. 00:53:07.65\00:53:09.42 He's not just going to roll over and play dead. 00:53:09.52\00:53:12.15 He's going to fight till the death. 00:53:12.45\00:53:15.29 Now how do we know that this hymn was actually sung 00:53:15.79\00:53:19.69 when Jesus resurrected. 00:53:19.73\00:53:21.66 In the journal, The Present Truth, February 18, 1886, 00:53:22.10\00:53:27.47 we find these words. 00:53:28.37\00:53:29.77 "At the death of Jesus, the earth was wrapped 00:53:29.87\00:53:33.07 in profound darkness at midday; 00:53:33.11\00:53:35.21 but at the resurrection, the brightness of the angels 00:53:35.68\00:53:38.31 illuminates the night, and the inhabitants 00:53:38.35\00:53:41.32 of heaven sing with great joy and triumph: 00:53:41.35\00:53:45.45 'Thou has vanquished Satan and the powers of darkness! 00:53:45.72\00:53:49.42 Thou has swallowed up death in victory!'" 00:53:49.62\00:53:52.33 And now notice the verse that she's going to quote. 00:53:52.63\00:53:55.10 "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, 00:53:55.40\00:53:57.87 'Now has come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom 00:53:57.97\00:54:00.84 of our God, and the power of His Christ; 00:54:00.87\00:54:03.00 for the accuser of our brethren is cast down 00:54:03.24\00:54:05.67 which accused them before our God day and night.'" 00:54:05.71\00:54:09.44 So Jesus gained the victory. 00:54:10.78\00:54:13.52 He lived a perfect life and He paid the penalty of sin. 00:54:13.55\00:54:18.05 The heavenly beings now sing the song of victory in heaven 00:54:19.92\00:54:25.23 as Jesus has resurrected, He's still on earth. 00:54:25.33\00:54:28.26 So now the heavenly beings say, 00:54:28.70\00:54:30.57 "Now we need to prepare the party. 00:54:31.20\00:54:33.13 He said when He left that He was going to go down there 00:54:34.44\00:54:36.54 for 30 years, and He was going to come back. 00:54:36.57\00:54:38.87 We've got to get the throne room ready. 00:54:39.07\00:54:41.11 We've got to gather all of the representatives 00:54:41.94\00:54:44.11 of the worlds together here 00:54:44.15\00:54:45.88 because He's going to come back in 40 days. 00:54:46.55\00:54:48.75 We've got to prepare everything to receive back the war Hero." 00:54:49.02\00:54:53.46 And so, Revelation chapters 4 and 5, as we're going to see 00:54:54.59\00:54:57.66 in the sessions this afternoon, Revelation 4 describes 00:54:57.69\00:55:02.46 the preparation of the heavenly throne room 00:55:02.50\00:55:05.50 for the return of the war Hero, 00:55:06.94\00:55:09.97 who, by the way, is returning from war 00:55:10.37\00:55:13.07 with the wounds to prove it, but He's alive. 00:55:13.78\00:55:17.71 And so, in chapter 4 the throne room is prepared, 00:55:19.15\00:55:21.92 and there present is One sitting on the throne, 00:55:22.75\00:55:25.99 God the Father, and you have the four living creatures 00:55:26.02\00:55:29.36 in the midst of the throne, you have the 24 elders 00:55:29.39\00:55:32.23 that surround the throne, you have the seven lamps of fire 00:55:32.26\00:55:35.83 which represent the fact that the 00:55:35.86\00:55:37.20 Holy Spirit is present there. 00:55:37.23\00:55:38.87 The whole throne room is being prepared. 00:55:39.60\00:55:41.64 Jesus is not in chapter 4. 00:55:41.67\00:55:43.27 The angelic host are not in chapter 4, 00:55:43.30\00:55:45.51 because the angelic host have gone to earth to pick up Jesus 00:55:45.54\00:55:48.44 and bring Him back. 00:55:48.48\00:55:49.81 And so then in chapter 5 the war Hero returns. 00:55:50.45\00:55:55.62 And He's presented as the Lamb as though He had been slain, 00:55:56.18\00:55:59.45 but He's alive. 00:55:59.49\00:56:00.82 A Lamb as though it had been wounded. 00:56:02.59\00:56:04.96 And now He comes and He presents Himself 00:56:05.63\00:56:08.30 before the Father on the throne. 00:56:08.83\00:56:11.70 And Ellen White describes this encounter vividly. 00:56:12.73\00:56:15.84 We're going to notice that later on, 00:56:15.87\00:56:17.51 how the Father and the Son met together. 00:56:17.54\00:56:19.77 And the Son says, "Father, is My sacrifice on earth 00:56:20.08\00:56:24.71 enough to bring all of My brothers and sisters home?" 00:56:24.81\00:56:28.78 And there's silence in heaven at this moment. 00:56:30.09\00:56:33.09 All of the angels and the heavenly beings 00:56:33.69\00:56:35.59 have ceased singing. 00:56:35.62\00:56:37.13 Everything is in suspense as the Son comes close to the Father. 00:56:37.29\00:56:41.10 And then suddenly the Father embraces His Son, 00:56:42.43\00:56:45.70 and He says, "It is enough. 00:56:46.27\00:56:48.14 Those that I have given You, 00:56:49.30\00:56:50.64 You can bring with You to heaven." 00:56:50.74\00:56:52.67 And then the Father utters in His voice, 00:56:53.38\00:56:58.05 like thunder, He says, "Worship Him, all the angels of God." 00:56:58.35\00:57:03.85 And now heaven breaks out in a beautiful hymn of praise 00:57:04.09\00:57:09.22 to the Lamb and to the One who is seated on the throne. 00:57:09.32\00:57:12.99 So Revelation chapters 4 and 5 are simply describing 00:57:14.20\00:57:18.30 the preparation of the throne room and the arrival of Jesus 00:57:18.33\00:57:23.00 at the throne room at the moment of His ascension. 00:57:23.30\00:57:26.78 And then in chapter 6, you have all of the events that transpire 00:57:27.28\00:57:32.65 after Jesus arrives, the seven seals, 00:57:32.85\00:57:35.88 culminating with the time when God's people will sit 00:57:36.08\00:57:40.42 with Jesus on His throne after they have overcome 00:57:40.46\00:57:44.63 during the period of the seven seals. 00:57:44.66\00:57:47.20 Are you with me? 00:57:47.23\00:57:48.56 And so, basically the seven seals describe Christian history 00:57:48.96\00:57:52.53 after the victory of Jesus Christ. 00:57:52.63\00:57:56.14
