and pushed out a little distance

I can see in my mind's eyes

Jesus standing on
that floating pulpit

with the crowd on the
shore listening intently

to every word He spoke.

As the sun began to set,
Jesus said to the disciples,

other side of the lake."

On the other side of
the lake in Gennesareth

was a community of unbelievers
whose minds had not been tainted

by the gossip the Pharisees
where spreading about Jesus.

And can you imagine, for
Jesus to find a little solace

and seclusion, Jesus
had to go to be with people

who had no idea who He was.

There are many
places in the world I go

where I am recognized.

But my favorite places to go
are places where few people go,

and no one knows my name.

Those are places where you can
relax and let your hair down,

if you have any.

And where you can be yourself.

I'll never forget,
walking through an airport,

I never thought anyone
would even recognize me.

And a lady came up to
me and said, "Excuse me."

I said, "Yes." She
said, "Are you somebody?"

I also remember
going to one of my favorite

little quiet islands.

And I had actually gotten some
coconuts from a coconut tree.

I couldn't climb the
tree, so I knocked them down.

And then I was looking for,
as I was driving to the hotel,

I was trying to find how
I could open those coconuts

so I can drink the water.
00:13:22.03\00:13:23.53
And I saw a lady at the side of
the road with a vegetable stand,
00:13:24.30\00:13:28.10
and I said, oh,
maybe she could help me.
00:13:28.14\00:13:30.07
So I pulled up and I
said, "Do you have any fruit?"

Because I wanted to buy
something so I wouldn't just

ask her to open the coconuts
without buying something.

And she said, "No, I
don't have any fruits."

I said, "Oh, I wish that
I could take some vegetables

to the hotel, but I can't."

I said, "I have these coconuts.

and she said, "The singer?"

Sometimes Jesus found
more peace and seclusion

among unbelievers.

Often more than among people who
claimed to be people of faith.

Because among unbelievers,
Jesus was often free

from the malicious,
spiteful, jealous...

Oh yes, He had to
deal with all of that.

The nasty comments.

As the little boat
with Jesus and His disciples

began to set sail for
the other shore, other boats

on the lake began to follow too.

Wherever Jesus was
going, they wanted to be there.

And after a long day,
and overcome with weariness

and hunger, Jesus went to the
stern, or the back of the boat,

laid down, and He fell asleep.

And for the most part, the
seas were calm and pleasant.

But all of a sudden,
the wind began to howl.

"Like a pack of wolves

The wind whipped
the sea into high waves

as tall as skyscrapers.

And then those waves
would come crashing back down

into the ocean below.

Suddenly, the
disciples were in the midst of a

wicked furious storm.

Dark clouds wrapped a
curtain of shadow around them.

The moon and stars went away,
and darkness enveloped the sky.

As the apostle Mark tells
it, the waves were punching

through with such fury
that they threatened to swamp

and sink their little boat.

The fact that the
disciples were frightened

tells us a lot about
the fury of that storm.

Because four of those disciples
were very experienced sailors;

and they were afraid.

And whenever a captain of
a ship is afraid in a storm,

believe me, that's
some kind of storm.

This storm was like no other
storm they had seen before.

And every skill and maneuver
they learned as seasoned

fisherman was being tested.

The other day I was on a
flight with a friend of mine.

And while in the middle
of the uneventful flight

20,000 feet in the air...

I listen all the
time for unusual sounds.
00:16:40.56\00:16:43.93
I heard a sound I had
never heard before in all the
00:16:43.97\00:16:46.63
flights I've
taken over 30 years.

It was the sound of
the landing gear dropping
00:16:50.64\00:16:56.31
while we were
20,000 feet in the air.
00:16:56.34\00:16:59.65
Now the landing gear
is only suppose to drop...

That's right.
...when you're landing.

And we were
20,000 feet in the air.

I have actually,
myself, been in a plane crash
00:17:11.36\00:17:14.63
in the Seattle area, in Spokane,
when the pilot had forgotten

to put the landing gear down.
00:17:20.67\00:17:23.04
And we just
crashed into the tarmac.
00:17:23.54\00:17:26.37
But this time, the
landing gear was being dropped
00:17:26.81\00:17:30.91
in the middle of the flight.

Believe me, you only do
that when something is wrong.

I was listening very carefully,
and after what seemed like

a couple of minutes, eventually
the landing gear went back up.

And in about half an
hour we landed safely.

Now the pilot
didn't say anything to us,

so I went home and I Googled.

And sometimes, I found
out, pilots have to put the

landing gear down in mid-flight
to cool off the brakes

of the plane if they remain
dangerously hot after take-off.

Well, the pilot
didn't tell us that.

We landed; he never said a word.

He probably was
dealing with this emergency

and didn't have
time to talk with us.

Well, the disciples
were so engrossed and tied up

with their efforts to save
their ship, they were so busy

bailing water, they
forgot that Jesus was onboard.

Sometimes you're so busy
trying to save a situation

you forget that the Savior of
the world is right beside you.

the world is only a prayer away.

It was when things
were at their worst

remembered Jesus was onboard.

Too many of us, we only
remember to look for Jesus

when we're about to go under.

"Wait a minute,"
somebody shouted.

"We set sail on His command.

Wake Him up.

He is the one responsible
for getting us in this storm.

Wake Him up."

They made their way
to the back of the ship,

and in the raging storm
they found Jesus sound asleep.

Thirteen men on a
boat; twelve are terrified,

and one is asleep.

And I don't mean
resting or napping.

I don't mean dosing or snoozing.

Jesus was flat out sound asleep.

I know some people who
can sleep like that, you know.

And when we would wake
him, we'd tease him, saying,

He'd say, "I wasn't sleeping."

"Grandpa, we all
saw you sleeping."

"I wasn't sleeping," he'd say.

"I heard every word you said."

"Oh Grandpa, what

And he'd say, "You're

The disciples,
frightened out of their wits,

saying, "Master, wake up.

That little boat was taking
on water and sinking fast.

within moments they would be

swallowed by the angry waves.

A bolt of lightning
pierced the darkness.

undisturbed by the storm.
