Well I am one of these
guys who loves book titles.

I can literally go to a book
store and spend an hour or two

just examining book
covers, looking at the titles,

and derive pleasure from it.

One or two hours just saying,
"Hey, what are people thinking

and how are they
trying to convey their ideas?"

And there are some book
titles that have stood out to me

over the year, over this
last year, that have been

really important to me.

And some of them I don't even
know what the book is about,

but the title
communicated to me.

My all time favorite
book title is a title

by Joshua Heschel,

title of this book,

Now it seems very
simple, but it turns our entire

theological
paradigm on its head.

Because we think more
in terms of human beings

searching for God,
trying to find God.

But this author has conveyed
the idea that in reality

the only reason I hunger

reason, to use Paul's language

in Acts 17, the only
reason I feel after God

is because He's
feeling after me.

He's searching after me.

He's the initiator
of the relationship.

He's pursuing me.

When I read that book title...

And that's one of the books that
I said, "That's so brilliant,

read the whole book."

the fact that God is the pursuer

But as I read that book
title for the first time,

thought of Psalm 23.

"The Lord is my

And then it goes on and
then it comes to the conclusion.

And then what does it say?

and mercy shall..."

The Hebrew word
there is, chase or pursue.

book title that I really like.

But this book title has
given people some problems.

This book title
is, A God Named Desire.

It's a title that I thought
was pretty simple and benign.

I didn't think there
was any problem with it.

But I've literally had people
send me emails and talk to me

in public places and say,
"That's a strange book title,
00:11:07.99\00:11:11.81
A God Named Desire."
00:11:11.84\00:11:13.24
And it struck me as odd.

I've said, "Have you heard of
the book, The Desire Of Ages?"
00:11:15.18\00:11:18.48
"Oh yeah."
00:11:18.51\00:11:19.88
I said, "Well, it's
based on the same text."

It's a prophecy in
Haggai chapter 2 verse 7
00:11:22.14\00:11:25.78
in which Jesus
Himself, the Messiah, is called,
00:11:26.11\00:11:29.58
"the desire of all nations," and
of all hearts and of all people
00:11:29.61\00:11:35.01
in all times.
00:11:35.04\00:11:36.41
Jesus is our desire as
He seeks to stimulate desire
00:11:36.44\00:11:40.76
in our hearts toward Him.
00:11:40.79\00:11:42.47
But here's the thing.

Not only is it that Jesus is
delighted when we desire Him,

but the point of that book
title is that He desires us.

He wants us.

In John 17, Jesus said to
the Father, "I desire, Father,

that those whom You have given
Me may be with Me where I am."

Jesus' heart is
continually pulsating with want,

with desire, with
longing, with yearning for you.

He would very much like to
spend all of eternity building,

cultivating, deepening a
personal relationship with you.

That staggers my mind.

But that's not even
the subject this morning.

Then I came to another
book title that was completely

different than any
I'd ever seen before

and it struck me as very odd.

I haven't read this book.

I just read the title, "In A
Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day."

Has anybody seen this book?

Lion On A Snowy Day"

I stood there looking
at the title of this book

and I thought, "In a pit
with a lion on a snowy day?"

And I thought two things.

Number one, I thought,
"Huh, that sounds familiar.
00:13:00.92\00:13:04.12
I think that's in
the Bible somewhere."

I wasn't sure.

But I thought, "I
think I've read that."

The second thing I
was wondering immediately

when I saw that title, "In A
Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day,"

I was thinking, how in
the wide world does somebody

come to be in a pit
with a lion on a snowy day?

And as I was
driving home, I thought,

logically the only
way any human being
00:13:24.58\00:13:27.98
would end up in
that predicament...

And you would agree,
that's a predicament, right?

In a pit with a
lion, that's bad enough.

And then it starts to snow?

This is a predicament.

How does a person come
to be in that situation?

And as I was driving
home, I thought to myself,

"Huh, the only way somebody
could possibly end up in a

pit with a lion on a
snowy day is by accident.

Would you agree
with that deduction?

You wouldn't
deliberately put yourself

in a pit with a lion
on a snowy day, would you?

No, you end up in that
predicament accidentally.

I think we would
all agree that's the

rational deduction, right?

So I'm driving home
and I'm thinking, "I wonder

where that is in the Bible."

And so I begin searching.

And sure enough, it's there.

Turn in your Bible to
1 Chronicles chapter 11.

And here we find this specific
term and this predicament

right in the Bible.

First of all for a
little bit of background,

we're dealing here with David

and his mighty men.

You know that David
was a mighty warrior.

This is his great
fame in the Bible.

He was a man of war.

But David was a
unique kind of man.

This is the kind of guy
who as, I think a teenager,

or at least a young man, went
to the front lines of battle,

challenged the giant
Goliath, picked up the sword,

took on the armor of King Saul
and found it not to his liking,

threw it all off and said,
"I'm going to go with a sling."

And he takes down Goliath
and then takes up the sword of

King Saul, lops off the head of
the giant, grabs it by the hair,

blood dripping everywhere,
throws the head of Goliath

at the feet of King
Saul, this is David,

and then goes out into
the field to strum his harp

and to write love
songs to the Lord.

This is David.

This is a dude's
dude, this is a man's man.

The Goliath
episode is very persuasive.

He's a warrior
throughout his entire career.

is a man with heart.

He writes things like, "As the
deer pants for the water brook,

oh God, for the living God."

the Lord, and that will I see.

Right? This is David.

This is a guy who is
living at the intersection

between heart and mind.

This is a guy who thinks,
and this is a guy who feels.

And this is a guy who received
probably this highest compliment

pay to anybody when He said,

David thinks and feels.

He's My kind of guy.

A man after My own
heart," the Lord says.

Now David had mighty
men, according to 1 Chronicles

chapter 11 and verse 10.

He had mighty men.
00:17:19.18\00:17:20.55
He was himself a mighty warrior.

And then he had, what we
might call, an inner circle

of valiant warriors who
were standouts among his army.

They did many great exploits,
mighty and heroic deeds,

Scripture says.

them to come to David's notice.

the kinds of things he did.
