Huh? 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.23 As I was standing back there listening, I was thinking, 00:06:53.67\00:06:56.48 I really would be willing to max out my credit card, 00:06:56.51\00:07:02.68 15% interest even, and pay monthly payments 00:07:02.93\00:07:06.09 until the second advent if I could sing like that. 00:07:06.12\00:07:09.19 Wow, what a gift. What a blessing. 00:07:09.85\00:07:12.37 Not exactly like that. 00:07:12.80\00:07:14.17 A male version of that level of vocal skill. 00:07:14.20\00:07:18.41 I think God is praised and glorified in song 00:07:18.44\00:07:23.66 in a way that often times we don't think about. 00:07:23.69\00:07:27.85 I'm impressed all the time by the fact that God is a 00:07:28.25\00:07:33.38 beautiful perfect fusion of mind and heart. 00:07:33.66\00:07:37.66 He's not merely a distant monarch on a throne 00:07:38.36\00:07:42.68 pointing His finger and issuing orders. 00:07:42.71\00:07:45.71 God feels things. 00:07:45.74\00:07:48.05 And He feels very deeply for all of us. 00:07:48.49\00:07:51.78 And so I can imagine in my mind that the Lord Himself 00:07:51.81\00:07:56.28 is elated and overjoyed when He hears one of His children 00:07:56.31\00:08:01.61 vocalizing their love in the form of song. 00:08:01.64\00:08:06.00 What a beautiful thing. Thank you so much. 00:08:06.03\00:08:08.36 Well I am one of these guys who loves book titles. 00:08:08.39\00:08:12.71 Anybody else out there? 00:08:12.74\00:08:14.11 I can literally go to a book store and spend an hour or two 00:08:14.14\00:08:19.51 just examining book covers, looking at the titles, 00:08:19.82\00:08:23.75 and derive pleasure from it. 00:08:23.78\00:08:25.81 One or two hours just saying, "Hey, what are people thinking 00:08:26.17\00:08:30.15 and how are they trying to convey their ideas?" 00:08:30.18\00:08:32.62 And there are some book titles that have stood out to me 00:08:32.82\00:08:35.07 over the year, over this last year, that have been 00:08:35.10\00:08:39.41 really important to me. 00:08:39.44\00:08:41.12 And some of them I don't even know what the book is about, 00:08:41.15\00:08:44.04 but the title communicated to me. 00:08:44.07\00:08:45.92 My all time favorite book title is a title 00:08:45.95\00:08:50.61 by Joshua Heschel, Abraham Joshua Heschel. 00:08:50.64\00:08:54.10 And listen to the title of this book, 00:08:54.38\00:08:56.32 God In Search Of Man. 00:08:56.35\00:08:59.84 Now it seems very simple, but it turns our entire 00:09:01.51\00:09:05.62 theological paradigm on its head. 00:09:05.92\00:09:08.19 Because we think more in terms of human beings 00:09:08.72\00:09:13.28 searching for God, trying to find God. 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.20 But this author has conveyed the idea that in reality 00:09:16.39\00:09:21.05 the only reason I hunger for God, the only reason I 00:09:21.08\00:09:24.36 search for God, the only reason, to use Paul's language 00:09:24.39\00:09:27.46 in Acts 17, the only reason I feel after God 00:09:27.49\00:09:30.87 is because He's feeling after me. 00:09:30.90\00:09:32.69 He's searching after me. 00:09:32.72\00:09:34.40 He's the initiator of the relationship. 00:09:34.43\00:09:37.53 He's pursuing me. 00:09:37.56\00:09:39.54 When I read that book title... 00:09:39.82\00:09:41.42 And that's one of the books that I said, "That's so brilliant, 00:09:41.45\00:09:45.29 I'm going to read the whole book." 00:09:45.32\00:09:46.69 And I did and I was blessed page by page. 00:09:46.72\00:09:49.15 What a remarkable insight into the fact that God is the pursuer 00:09:49.18\00:09:53.53 of human beings. 00:09:53.56\00:09:54.93 But as I read that book title for the first time, 00:09:55.01\00:09:58.31 I immediately thought of Psalm 23. 00:09:58.34\00:10:00.72 "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want..." 00:10:01.16\00:10:03.41 And then it goes on and then it comes to the conclusion. 00:10:03.44\00:10:05.28 And then what does it say? 00:10:05.31\00:10:06.68 "Surely, goodness and mercy shall..." 00:10:06.71\00:10:08.57 Do you know? 00:10:08.60\00:10:09.97 "...follow me all the days of my life." 00:10:10.00\00:10:11.87 The Hebrew word there is, chase or pursue. 00:10:11.90\00:10:16.27 God is literally after you and me. 00:10:16.30\00:10:19.05 He is chasing us. 00:10:19.46\00:10:21.56 He's not playing hard to get. 00:10:21.59\00:10:23.78 He's not the one that's aloof. 00:10:23.81\00:10:26.10 He's not the one that's emotionally distant 00:10:26.43\00:10:28.84 or intellectually disengaged. 00:10:28.87\00:10:30.69 We are. 00:10:30.72\00:10:32.09 And He is continually trying to cultivate 00:10:32.12\00:10:34.95 interest in our hearts. 00:10:34.98\00:10:36.78 So, God in search of man. 00:10:36.81\00:10:38.81 He's the one searching of us. 00:10:38.84\00:10:41.23 And then there's another book title that I really like. 00:10:41.73\00:10:44.76 And it's a book title that is on one of my books. 00:10:44.79\00:10:49.11 I'm sorry for this. 00:10:49.14\00:10:50.51 But this book title has given people some problems. 00:10:51.64\00:10:54.34 This book title is, A God Named Desire. 00:10:54.63\00:10:56.95 It's a title that I thought was pretty simple and benign. 00:10:57.31\00:11:01.83 I didn't think there was any problem with it. 00:11:01.86\00:11:03.74 But I've literally had people send me emails and talk to me 00:11:03.77\00:11:07.96 in public places and say, "That's a strange book title, 00:11:07.99\00:11:11.81 A God Named Desire." 00:11:11.84\00:11:13.24 And it struck me as odd. 00:11:13.70\00:11:15.15 I've said, "Have you heard of the book, The Desire Of Ages?" 00:11:15.18\00:11:18.48 "Oh yeah." 00:11:18.51\00:11:19.88 I said, "Well, it's based on the same text." 00:11:19.91\00:11:22.11 It's a prophecy in Haggai chapter 2 verse 7 00:11:22.14\00:11:25.78 in which Jesus Himself, the Messiah, is called, 00:11:26.11\00:11:29.58 "the desire of all nations," and of all hearts and of all people 00:11:29.61\00:11:35.01 in all times. 00:11:35.04\00:11:36.41 Jesus is our desire as He seeks to stimulate desire 00:11:36.44\00:11:40.76 in our hearts toward Him. 00:11:40.79\00:11:42.47 But here's the thing. 00:11:42.50\00:11:43.87 Not only is it that Jesus is delighted when we desire Him, 00:11:43.90\00:11:50.81 but the point of that book title is that He desires us. 00:11:51.13\00:11:55.79 He wants us. 00:11:56.17\00:11:57.67 In John 17, Jesus said to the Father, "I desire, Father, 00:11:57.87\00:12:02.92 that those whom You have given Me may be with Me where I am." 00:12:02.95\00:12:07.52 Jesus' heart is continually pulsating with want, 00:12:08.68\00:12:14.34 with desire, with longing, with yearning for you. 00:12:14.37\00:12:17.80 He would very much like to spend all of eternity building, 00:12:17.83\00:12:23.46 cultivating, deepening a personal relationship with you. 00:12:23.49\00:12:28.39 That staggers my mind. 00:12:28.70\00:12:30.26 That is beautiful in the extreme. 00:12:30.54\00:12:32.79 But that's not even the subject this morning. 00:12:32.82\00:12:34.53 Then I came to another book title that was completely 00:12:34.56\00:12:38.44 different than any I'd ever seen before 00:12:38.47\00:12:41.11 and it struck me as very odd. 00:12:41.14\00:12:42.92 I haven't read this book. 00:12:43.18\00:12:44.82 I just read the title, "In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day." 00:12:45.40\00:12:51.08 Has anybody seen this book? 00:12:51.11\00:12:52.48 "In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day" 00:12:52.97\00:12:54.93 I stood there looking at the title of this book 00:12:54.96\00:12:57.00 and I thought, "In a pit with a lion on a snowy day?" 00:12:57.03\00:12:59.49 And I thought two things. 00:12:59.52\00:13:00.89 Number one, I thought, "Huh, that sounds familiar. 00:13:00.92\00:13:04.12 I think that's in the Bible somewhere." 00:13:04.52\00:13:06.61 I wasn't sure. 00:13:06.64\00:13:08.01 But I thought, "I think I've read that." 00:13:08.13\00:13:10.54 The second thing I was wondering immediately 00:13:10.57\00:13:12.95 when I saw that title, "In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day," 00:13:12.98\00:13:16.21 I was thinking, how in the wide world does somebody 00:13:16.24\00:13:18.84 come to be in a pit with a lion on a snowy day? 00:13:18.87\00:13:21.82 And as I was driving home, I thought, 00:13:22.21\00:13:24.38 logically the only way any human being 00:13:24.58\00:13:27.98 would end up in that predicament... 00:13:28.41\00:13:30.50 And you would agree, that's a predicament, right? 00:13:30.53\00:13:32.67 In a pit with a lion, that's bad enough. 00:13:32.99\00:13:35.06 And then it starts to snow? 00:13:35.09\00:13:36.87 This is a predicament. 00:13:37.42\00:13:38.79 How does a person come to be in that situation? 00:13:39.52\00:13:42.99 And as I was driving home, I thought to myself, 00:13:43.02\00:13:46.33 "Huh, the only way somebody could possibly end up in a 00:13:46.36\00:13:51.18 pit with a lion on a snowy day is by accident. 00:13:51.21\00:13:53.59 Would you agree with that deduction? 00:13:53.81\00:13:56.18 You wouldn't deliberately put yourself 00:13:56.33\00:14:00.56 in a pit with a lion on a snowy day, would you? 00:14:00.86\00:14:04.09 No, you end up in that predicament accidentally. 00:14:04.65\00:14:08.45 I think we would all agree that's the 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.07 rational deduction, right? 00:14:10.10\00:14:12.70 So I'm driving home and I'm thinking, "I wonder 00:14:13.10\00:14:14.80 where that is in the Bible." 00:14:14.83\00:14:16.63 And so I begin searching. 00:14:17.14\00:14:18.99 And sure enough, it's there. 00:14:19.02\00:14:21.37 Turn in your Bible to 1 Chronicles chapter 11. 00:14:21.40\00:14:25.14 And here we find this specific term and this predicament 00:14:25.66\00:14:34.53 right in the Bible. 00:14:35.26\00:14:36.83 First of all for a little bit of background, 00:14:37.78\00:14:39.74 chapter 11 verse 10, we're dealing here with David 00:14:40.29\00:14:44.00 and his mighty men. 00:14:44.03\00:14:47.45 You know that David was a mighty warrior. 00:14:47.70\00:14:50.93 Right? 00:14:50.96\00:14:52.33 This is his great fame in the Bible. 00:14:52.36\00:14:56.20 He was a man of war. 00:14:56.23\00:14:58.37 But David was a unique kind of man. 00:14:59.52\00:15:02.90 He was a man of war. 00:15:02.93\00:15:04.40 This is the kind of guy who as, I think a teenager, 00:15:04.43\00:15:07.01 or at least a young man, went to the front lines of battle, 00:15:07.04\00:15:11.19 challenged the giant Goliath, picked up the sword, 00:15:12.22\00:15:17.61 took on the armor of King Saul and found it not to his liking, 00:15:17.64\00:15:22.66 threw it all off and said, "I'm going to go with a sling." 00:15:22.97\00:15:26.65 And he takes down Goliath and then takes up the sword of 00:15:27.83\00:15:33.36 King Saul, lops off the head of the giant, grabs it by the hair, 00:15:33.39\00:15:37.59 blood dripping everywhere, throws the head of Goliath 00:15:37.62\00:15:42.20 at the feet of King Saul, this is David, 00:15:42.23\00:15:45.53 and then goes out into the field to strum his harp 00:15:45.83\00:15:49.07 and to write love songs to the Lord. 00:15:49.10\00:15:51.78 This is David. 00:15:52.11\00:15:53.48 This is a dude's dude, this is a man's man. 00:15:53.98\00:15:57.74 Brothers, would you agree? 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.42 The Goliath episode is very persuasive. 00:15:59.69\00:16:03.62 David is a dude. 00:16:03.98\00:16:05.76 He's a man. 00:16:06.20\00:16:07.57 He is the epitome of masculinity and strength. 00:16:07.60\00:16:10.75 He's a warrior throughout his entire career. 00:16:10.78\00:16:14.80 But then David is a man with heart. 00:16:16.32\00:16:19.66 He writes things like, "As the deer pants for the water brook, 00:16:20.28\00:16:24.61 so pants my soul for Thee, oh God, for the living God." 00:16:24.64\00:16:28.39 Right? 00:16:28.74\00:16:30.11 "One thing have I desire of the Lord, and that will I see. 00:16:30.14\00:16:33.72 That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the 00:16:34.05\00:16:36.25 days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, 00:16:36.28\00:16:39.54 and to ask questions in His temple." 00:16:39.57\00:16:41.85 Right? This is David. 00:16:42.07\00:16:43.64 This is a guy who is living at the intersection 00:16:43.94\00:16:47.34 between heart and mind. 00:16:47.37\00:16:49.24 This is a guy who thinks, and this is a guy who feels. 00:16:49.82\00:16:54.61 And this is a guy who received probably this highest compliment 00:16:55.03\00:16:59.19 that God Almighty could pay to anybody when He said, 00:16:59.22\00:17:01.70 "David? He's a man after My own heart. 00:17:01.73\00:17:05.45 I like the way David thinks and feels. 00:17:05.48\00:17:08.29 He's My kind of guy. 00:17:08.65\00:17:10.52 A man after My own heart," the Lord says. 00:17:11.24\00:17:13.31 Now David had mighty men, according to 1 Chronicles 00:17:13.34\00:17:17.25 chapter 11 and verse 10. 00:17:17.28\00:17:19.15 He had mighty men. 00:17:19.18\00:17:20.55 He was himself a mighty warrior. 00:17:20.58\00:17:22.84 And then he had, what we might call, an inner circle 00:17:22.87\00:17:26.70 of valiant warriors who were standouts among his army. 00:17:26.73\00:17:32.73 They did many great exploits, mighty and heroic deeds, 00:17:32.76\00:17:38.05 Scripture says. 00:17:38.08\00:17:39.57 And that's what caused them to come to David's notice. 00:17:39.60\00:17:42.79 And he drew them close into the inner circle. 00:17:42.82\00:17:46.59 This is David and his mighty men. 00:17:46.62\00:17:50.08 Now one of these mighty men is described, 00:17:50.11\00:17:52.28 and the deeds he performed, in verses 22 and 23. 00:17:52.58\00:17:56.43 Chapter 11 of 1 Chronicles verses 22 and 23. 00:17:57.59\00:18:01.70 "Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, was the son of a valiant man 00:18:01.90\00:18:09.57 from Kabzeel..." 00:18:09.60\00:18:11.16 Now notice this. 00:18:11.19\00:18:12.56 This is Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a 00:18:12.59\00:18:16.99 valiant man from Kabzeel. 00:18:17.02\00:18:20.77 The language itself sounds very mighty to begin with. 00:18:21.27\00:18:25.96 This is Benaiah from Kabzeel. 00:18:25.99\00:18:29.25 This isn't Ty from Eugene. 00:18:30.27\00:18:32.81 This isn't Billy Bob from Thompsonville. 00:18:33.25\00:18:36.31 This is Benaiah from Kabzeel, okay? 00:18:36.34\00:18:41.14 So you've got to feel that. 00:18:41.17\00:18:42.54 And it says here that he did, verse 22, he did many... 00:18:43.48\00:18:48.07 What? 00:18:48.27\00:18:49.64 ...deeds. 00:18:49.67\00:18:51.04 And then it says, "He had killed two lion-like 00:18:51.07\00:18:56.66 warriors or heroes of Moab." 00:18:56.69\00:18:59.56 So we're going to delineate the kinds of things he did. 00:18:59.76\00:19:02.50 "He also," notice this, "went down and killed a lion 00:19:02.53\00:19:09.16 in the midst of a pit on a snowy day." 00:19:09.19\00:19:12.99 Now my version says, "He had gone down," 00:19:14.11\00:19:17.02 he went down. 00:19:17.05\00:19:18.57 Another version says, "He chased a lion into a 00:19:18.60\00:19:22.69 pit on a snowy day." 00:19:22.72\00:19:24.09 So get the image in your head. 00:19:24.12\00:19:26.13 This guy is amazing. 00:19:26.80\00:19:28.57 He's walking along and he sees a lion. 00:19:29.46\00:19:33.35 What would you do if you saw a lion? 00:19:33.38\00:19:35.59 You would run, wouldn't you? 00:19:36.54\00:19:38.03 Which way? 00:19:38.06\00:19:39.43 Opposite direction. 00:19:39.46\00:19:41.04 Lion? I'm going that way. 00:19:41.07\00:19:43.11 Right? 00:19:43.14\00:19:44.51 Benaiah is this kind of guy. 00:19:44.54\00:19:46.72 Please understand the psychology going on here. 00:19:46.75\00:19:50.15 This guy sees a lion and his immediate impulse is... 00:19:51.12\00:19:54.76 ...chase the lion. 00:19:55.66\00:19:57.15 So he sprints after the lion, chases the lion into a pit, 00:19:57.50\00:20:03.91 jumps down into the pit that the lion is now in. 00:20:04.52\00:20:08.62 Boom, he lands. 00:20:08.65\00:20:10.83 He looks across the pit at the lion. 00:20:10.86\00:20:13.78 And it begins to snow. 00:20:13.81\00:20:15.84 And Benaiah is the kind of guy who, when the going gets tough, 00:20:16.90\00:20:22.90 he gets tougher. 00:20:22.93\00:20:24.49 "Snow? Bring it on." 00:20:24.52\00:20:26.16 This is Benaiah from Kabzeel. 00:20:27.01\00:20:30.35 And he kills the lion in the pit on a snowy day. 00:20:30.91\00:20:35.51 This is amazing to me. 00:20:36.29\00:20:38.04 What is going on in his mind? 00:20:38.54\00:20:41.80 He is obviously, listen carefully now, 00:20:41.83\00:20:45.25 aware of his skills. 00:20:45.28\00:20:48.91 He knows what he's capable of. 00:20:48.94\00:20:52.03 Would you agree? 00:20:52.06\00:20:53.43 He's not afraid. 00:20:53.46\00:20:55.02 He chases a lion into a pit on a snowy day 00:20:55.45\00:20:59.37 and kills that lion. 00:20:59.40\00:21:00.77 Verse 23 says that he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, 00:21:00.80\00:21:05.14 five cubits tall. 00:21:05.17\00:21:06.69 One version says, seven and a half feet tall. 00:21:06.72\00:21:10.56 How did he kill this Egyptian, 00:21:11.13\00:21:13.38 this seven and a half feet tall Egyptian? 00:21:13.41\00:21:16.17 With a spear the size of a weaver's beam. 00:21:17.97\00:21:21.42 I don't know what a weaver's beam is or how big 00:21:21.45\00:21:24.45 a weaver's beam is. 00:21:24.48\00:21:26.26 I'm going to have to Google that. 00:21:26.29\00:21:27.66 But this is some implement for weaving in ancient times. 00:21:28.44\00:21:33.17 And the implication is that it's rather large. 00:21:33.20\00:21:36.22 Where did he get this implement? 00:21:36.25\00:21:39.83 What does the Scripture say? 00:21:40.42\00:21:41.85 He wrested the spear out of the Egyptian's hand 00:21:43.12\00:21:46.92 and then killed him with his own spear. 00:21:46.95\00:21:49.14 This is Benaiah from Kabzeel. 00:21:50.18\00:21:54.07 Just so you know. Alright? 00:21:54.43\00:21:57.45 And he is one of David's mighty men. 00:21:57.48\00:22:02.81 Now all of these things are written as examples 00:22:03.41\00:22:09.29 for those upon whom the end of the world has come. 00:22:09.61\00:22:16.54 Turn now in your Bible to a prophecy about another 00:22:17.33\00:22:23.13 group of mighty warriors, to Zechariah. 00:22:23.16\00:22:26.45 Go to the minor prophet Zechariah and chapter 10. 00:22:26.48\00:22:33.10 This is astounding, because what's happening here 00:22:33.13\00:22:37.25 in Scripture is that we have a story in the Old Testament 00:22:37.28\00:22:46.67 that an Old Testament prophet is drawing upon 00:22:47.47\00:22:51.28 in order to make an end time application. 00:22:51.31\00:22:54.69 So go in Zechariah chapter 12. 00:22:54.72\00:22:58.38 Did I say chapter 10? 00:22:58.41\00:22:59.78 No I didn't. Yes I did? 00:23:00.32\00:23:01.89 Okay, chapter 12. 00:23:01.92\00:23:04.63 Notice the language here. 00:23:04.66\00:23:06.59 Zechariah chapter 12 and verse 10. 00:23:06.98\00:23:10.32 "And I will pour on the house of..." Who? 00:23:10.35\00:23:15.89 "...David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem 00:23:15.92\00:23:20.20 the Spirit of grace and supplication; 00:23:20.23\00:23:27.41 then they will look on Me whom they have pierced. 00:23:27.44\00:23:34.97 Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his firstborn." 00:23:35.51\00:23:44.18 This is astounding. 00:23:44.21\00:23:45.58 Here, David's house is brought to view. 00:23:45.93\00:23:49.31 And David's house is going to receive an outpouring 00:23:49.34\00:23:53.66 of God's Spirit. 00:23:53.87\00:23:55.40 This is eschatological, this is end time. 00:23:55.98\00:23:58.76 This is something that God has in His agenda slotted 00:23:58.79\00:24:02.78 for the time in which we live. 00:24:02.81\00:24:05.50 Now let your eyes go right up to verse 8. 00:24:05.99\00:24:09.41 "In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants 00:24:10.37\00:24:14.35 of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them 00:24:14.38\00:24:19.54 will be like..." Who in that day? 00:24:20.23\00:24:23.06 Like David. 00:24:23.40\00:24:24.78 "The one who is feeble among them in that day 00:24:24.96\00:24:27.47 shall be like David, and the house of David 00:24:27.50\00:24:30.95 shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them." 00:24:30.98\00:24:38.60 Isn't this amazing? 00:24:38.63\00:24:40.00 What is the prophet doing here? 00:24:40.25\00:24:42.19 He's bringing language to bear upon something 00:24:42.22\00:24:45.60 that's going to happen at the end of time. 00:24:45.63\00:24:47.82 And he wants us to understand a scale of strength, 00:24:47.85\00:24:51.92 if you will. 00:24:51.95\00:24:53.32 And he says, "Listen, remember David?" 00:24:53.35\00:24:56.21 And what's the image that comes to mind when anybody 00:24:56.61\00:24:59.74 who's biblically aware thinks of David? 00:24:59.77\00:25:02.35 David is a mighty warrior. 00:25:02.38\00:25:03.95 "Remember David?" the prophet is essentially saying. 00:25:03.98\00:25:06.68 "Well in that day, the feeble and weak among God's people 00:25:07.50\00:25:13.05 will be as mighty as David. 00:25:13.08\00:25:14.78 And David and his house? 00:25:15.90\00:25:18.39 His inner circle of mighty men? 00:25:18.49\00:25:21.28 They'll be like God in strength; 00:25:22.21\00:25:25.50 like the Angel of the Lord, angelic in their might 00:25:25.73\00:25:29.77 in the things that they do at the end of time." 00:25:29.80\00:25:31.98 So it's as if, just to make it very clear, you were to say, 00:25:32.72\00:25:39.40 "A little boy is as strong as a full grown man." 00:25:39.43\00:25:43.59 I have two grandsons, Mason and Austin. 00:25:43.99\00:25:47.36 And they are just incredible. 00:25:47.76\00:25:50.69 And one morning very early, as I just kind of crawled out of bed, 00:25:50.72\00:25:56.57 hadn't slept as much as I wanted to, came out 00:25:57.26\00:26:00.57 into the living room, and there they were with 00:26:00.60\00:26:03.49 nothing on but their underwear. 00:26:03.52\00:26:06.19 And they had them cinched up with little toys 00:26:07.16\00:26:09.71 tied into their undies. 00:26:09.74\00:26:13.19 And they were full of energy. 00:26:13.22\00:26:16.06 And I'm just wiping my eyes, rubbing my eyes. 00:26:16.34\00:26:19.40 I come out and I look at these two little guys. 00:26:19.43\00:26:21.44 At this time they were only four and six. 00:26:21.47\00:26:25.28 And I come out of my bedroom and the older one, Mason, says, 00:26:25.31\00:26:29.60 "Papa, want to wrestle?" 00:26:29.63\00:26:32.19 And I say in my mind, "You little pip squeaks. 00:26:34.24\00:26:37.11 Of course I want to wrestle. 00:26:37.14\00:26:38.88 You're nothing for me. 00:26:39.87\00:26:41.64 Bring it on." 00:26:42.04\00:26:43.41 And I drop to my knees. 00:26:43.44\00:26:45.53 And just as I come to my knees, the little fat one runs 00:26:45.56\00:26:51.40 break neck speed at me, toys flying out of his underwear. 00:26:52.20\00:26:56.79 And just as he comes, he drops his chubby head 00:26:58.14\00:27:02.36 and drives it into my stomach, wraps his arms around my waist, 00:27:02.39\00:27:08.21 as the older one comes around from behind, 00:27:08.24\00:27:12.00 brings me into a choke hold, and they drop me to the ground. 00:27:12.03\00:27:15.98 The whole thing was choreographed. 00:27:18.02\00:27:20.23 My daughter was standing in the kitchen 00:27:22.82\00:27:25.00 watching the whole affair, which was bad enough. 00:27:25.03\00:27:27.78 I was hoping my wife wasn't watching. 00:27:27.81\00:27:30.08 And I said, "What are you feeding these guys?" 00:27:31.94\00:27:35.09 And she said, "Just soy milk and Big Franks." 00:27:35.12\00:27:37.30 So these are just little guys. 00:27:40.14\00:27:42.17 The prophet is saying here that the feeble and the weak 00:27:42.20\00:27:47.08 among God's people at the end of time are going to be 00:27:47.11\00:27:49.55 as mighty as David... 00:27:49.58\00:27:51.11 ...on a scale of strength. 00:27:53.00\00:27:55.10 He wants us to understand that weakness, 00:27:55.13\00:27:59.64 weakness, at that time will be might. 00:27:59.94\00:28:04.67 There's going to be some kind of source of strength 00:28:05.46\00:28:10.09 and empowerment that will be flooded upon 00:28:10.12\00:28:14.50 God's people at the end of time. 00:28:15.07\00:28:16.92 And the strong among God's people, whoever they might be, 00:28:19.19\00:28:23.33 the mighty will be like God. 00:28:24.92\00:28:27.30 Now the prophet is using what we call hyperbole here. 00:28:27.33\00:28:31.11 He's exaggerating for effect. 00:28:31.14\00:28:32.96 God is omnipotent. 00:28:32.99\00:28:34.53 Obviously God's people, none of them, will be truly 00:28:34.83\00:28:38.58 exactly as mighty as God. 00:28:38.61\00:28:40.30 But here's the point. 00:28:40.33\00:28:41.70 He's saying that the deeds they perform at the end of time 00:28:41.73\00:28:46.19 will be such mighty deeds that they will be comparable 00:28:46.84\00:28:52.37 to the actions of God in history. 00:28:52.40\00:28:54.95 Jesus Himself said at one point in His ministry, 00:28:56.63\00:29:01.21 you will recall, when people were observing the mighty 00:29:01.24\00:29:05.39 things that He was doing, He said, "Well, could I just 00:29:05.42\00:29:09.33 point out that greater works than these you will do." 00:29:09.36\00:29:14.61 Not perhaps greater in quality... 00:29:15.18\00:29:17.94 Well I'll remove, I'll edit out the word "perhaps." 00:29:17.97\00:29:20.50 Jesus was at the pinnacle of strength 00:29:21.15\00:29:25.48 as our Savior, no doubt. 00:29:25.51\00:29:27.61 So take the word "perhaps" out. 00:29:27.64\00:29:29.57 We won't do mightier deeds than Jesus in quality, 00:29:30.48\00:29:35.37 but in scale and breadth encompassing the whole earth. 00:29:36.08\00:29:41.22 I mean, think about it. 00:29:41.25\00:29:42.62 The 3000 baptized in a day, and the many others who were 00:29:42.94\00:29:46.29 baptized in the book of Acts, in the apostolic church, 00:29:46.32\00:29:50.63 they were reaping the benefits of the ministry of Jesus. 00:29:50.66\00:29:55.82 And they had wide spread converts to the point where, 00:29:56.80\00:30:01.40 the book of Acts says, they turned the world upside down. 00:30:01.43\00:30:05.25 "Greater works than these you will do. 00:30:05.28\00:30:07.52 You're going to take what I have given you; 00:30:07.55\00:30:11.90 the victory, the triumph that I will achieve for you 00:30:11.93\00:30:15.97 at Calvary and through the resurrection, 00:30:16.00\00:30:19.03 and you will then take that victory global. 00:30:19.63\00:30:24.02 You'll take it to the whole world. 00:30:24.90\00:30:26.87 Everybody on the planet will encounter the victory 00:30:26.90\00:30:33.10 of My shed blood and the magnificent revelation 00:30:33.13\00:30:37.09 of God's love for every human soul. 00:30:37.12\00:30:39.72 The whole world will encounter it through the deeds that 00:30:40.15\00:30:43.63 you perform here after." 00:30:43.66\00:30:45.72 And then we fast forward. 00:30:46.03\00:30:47.68 We come to the end of time. 00:30:47.71\00:30:49.49 And when we come to the end of the world's history, 00:30:49.81\00:30:54.59 Zechariah says there's going to be something remarkable 00:30:54.62\00:30:58.74 that's going to occur. 00:30:58.77\00:31:00.25 David and his mighty men are going to arise again 00:31:01.00\00:31:06.23 on the scene of earth's history. 00:31:06.26\00:31:08.18 And that will be a remarkable display of strength 00:31:09.27\00:31:15.30 advancing the kingdom of God. 00:31:16.25\00:31:18.49 What then... 00:31:19.12\00:31:20.49 And here's the crucial point. 00:31:20.52\00:31:22.64 What then is the source of this strength? 00:31:23.72\00:31:27.65 What is the precise quality of this empowerment? 00:31:28.84\00:31:33.40 Where does it derive from? 00:31:33.60\00:31:35.58 Well we already read it in verse 10. 00:31:36.27\00:31:39.94 Again, "And I will pour on the house of David and on the 00:31:40.14\00:31:46.75 inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of..." 00:31:46.78\00:31:50.48 What, everybody? 00:31:50.51\00:31:51.88 "...grace and supplication; 00:31:51.91\00:31:55.06 then they will look on Me whom they have pierced." 00:31:56.14\00:32:02.43 We're at Calvary now. 00:32:02.46\00:32:03.83 We're on our knees before the cross of Christ 00:32:05.93\00:32:08.69 in this prophecy. 00:32:08.72\00:32:10.09 And we are looking up at the most magnificent display 00:32:10.38\00:32:14.96 of self-sacrificing love ever to occur in all 00:32:16.18\00:32:18.93 of universal history. 00:32:18.96\00:32:20.50 We're looking in to the eyes of God 00:32:21.45\00:32:25.12 giving His life for love of you and me. 00:32:26.69\00:32:32.36 And according to this prophecy, when we look in that direction; 00:32:33.79\00:32:37.98 theologically, to formulate our entire doctrinal message 00:32:38.52\00:32:46.04 centered on the cross; emotionally, to feed on 00:32:46.45\00:32:51.47 the love of God that was put on display there. 00:32:51.50\00:32:54.53 Or to use the words of Paul in Romans chapter 5, 00:32:54.56\00:32:58.38 where he says that God "demonstrated His love, 00:32:58.89\00:33:03.15 in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." 00:33:03.77\00:33:06.43 So intellectually, doctrinally, as we center ourselves 00:33:07.85\00:33:12.98 at Calvary. 00:33:13.18\00:33:14.55 Emotionally, as we center ourselves, feeding upon 00:33:14.58\00:33:18.33 the love of God displayed for us at Calvary. 00:33:18.64\00:33:22.32 Behaviorally, habitually, in our acts of service, 00:33:23.32\00:33:28.33 to live toward all our fellow human beings. 00:33:28.92\00:33:33.16 Relationally, husband to wife, wife to husband, 00:33:34.21\00:33:37.67 parents to children, Nana to Papa, 00:33:37.70\00:33:41.79 everybody, aunties, uncles, every home, every church, 00:33:43.30\00:33:50.95 every community reaching out, out, out, 00:33:51.51\00:33:55.70 with one singular motive driving us. 00:33:55.73\00:34:00.69 The love of God manifested at Calvary in Christ. 00:34:00.72\00:34:05.29 That display, according to this eschatological prophecy... 00:34:05.59\00:34:10.55 And I think we often miss it. 00:34:11.23\00:34:13.10 But this is end time prophecy. 00:34:13.13\00:34:16.16 And here in this end time prophecy, the cross of Calvary 00:34:16.19\00:34:20.86 is exalted as central to the focus of the people of God. 00:34:21.97\00:34:26.74 And not just central. 00:34:26.77\00:34:28.14 It is in fact what makes them mighty. 00:34:28.17\00:34:31.66 It is in fact what gives them strength. 00:34:31.96\00:34:34.92 David was a military man. 00:34:34.95\00:34:37.13 He wielded an actual sword. 00:34:38.15\00:34:41.40 He was a man of war. 00:34:42.11\00:34:44.00 Interestingly enough, when it came time to build the temple, 00:34:44.71\00:34:48.25 God said, "David, I know you want to build the temple 00:34:48.28\00:34:52.79 for the worship of God, but listen. 00:34:52.82\00:34:57.07 It can't be a man with blood on his hands. 00:34:57.54\00:35:00.08 It can't be a man of war." 00:35:00.11\00:35:01.49 There is a sense you get in Scripture that while God is 00:35:01.65\00:35:04.63 navigating the human situation, and He is in some ways 00:35:04.66\00:35:10.14 accommodating our fallen predicament, 00:35:10.17\00:35:13.89 and therefore He is involved in directing and guiding His people 00:35:13.92\00:35:21.07 even when they are not acting and living in perfect accordance 00:35:21.10\00:35:26.60 with His ultimate will, His first will, His best will. 00:35:26.63\00:35:30.54 God is not a man of war. 00:35:30.57\00:35:32.21 If the fall of mankind had never occurred, imagine, 00:35:32.95\00:35:36.37 if the fall of mankind had never occurred, 00:35:37.54\00:35:40.45 there would never have ever been a war. 00:35:41.54\00:35:45.34 Blood would have never been shed on planet earth. 00:35:46.07\00:35:48.32 There would have never even been a thought or a feeling 00:35:48.35\00:35:52.30 of prejudice or hatred. 00:35:52.33\00:35:54.40 This is evidence that God, for who God is in Himself, 00:35:56.25\00:36:01.95 is decidedly anti-violence, anti-war, anti-bloodshed. 00:36:01.98\00:36:06.45 God is a God who says in Isaiah chapter 11 verse 9 00:36:06.48\00:36:11.88 that, "'The day is coming when they shall not hurt 00:36:12.31\00:36:16.59 nor destroy in all My holy mountain,' says the Lord. 00:36:16.62\00:36:20.42 'For the earth shall be filled with the 00:36:20.45\00:36:22.29 knowledge of the Lord.'" 00:36:22.32\00:36:24.47 God Himself, in Himself, apart from this awful hand of misery 00:36:24.51\00:36:31.87 we've dealt to Him, God in Himself is decidedly 00:36:31.90\00:36:36.49 anti-war, and only lives for peace. 00:36:36.52\00:36:42.52 He was navigating terrible situations 00:36:43.89\00:36:47.51 in Old Testament times doing what needed to be done 00:36:47.54\00:36:52.24 in order to preserve the human race and to preserve a line 00:36:52.27\00:36:56.50 through which Messiah could come 00:36:56.53\00:36:58.74 and be the Savior of the world who would not take up 00:37:00.28\00:37:04.28 a literal sword. 00:37:04.70\00:37:06.10 But would conquer the kingdom of darkness 00:37:06.13\00:37:09.26 by the sheer power of love, and love alone. 00:37:09.29\00:37:14.43 When Jesus came to this world, the Scripture says that He 00:37:14.63\00:37:19.09 came to destroy the works of the devil. 00:37:19.12\00:37:21.98 And He pulled it off. 00:37:22.81\00:37:24.33 Not by violence. 00:37:25.08\00:37:27.80 Jesus wasn't a man of war. 00:37:28.29\00:37:30.19 But Jesus conquered the principalities and 00:37:30.76\00:37:33.80 powers of darkness by a consistent steady 00:37:33.83\00:37:38.23 unbroken display of self-giving love for the human race. 00:37:38.26\00:37:45.33 Coming all the way to Calvary where the zenith display 00:37:45.78\00:37:51.78 of God's love was revealed. 00:37:51.81\00:37:53.79 And when Jesus died on the cross, it was in that act 00:37:54.50\00:38:00.87 that the kingdom of darkness was, in principle, vanquished 00:38:01.69\00:38:07.14 and conquered. 00:38:07.62\00:38:08.99 We then, post Calvary, are called upon to take 00:38:09.48\00:38:14.98 the substance of that love and to infuse it into everything 00:38:15.57\00:38:23.66 that we live and teach and preach as a people 00:38:23.69\00:38:29.99 and to bring to the world the victory of Calvary. 00:38:30.70\00:38:34.60 This prophecy is foretelling David and his mighty men 00:38:35.07\00:38:41.30 stepping on the scene of earth's history again, symbolically. 00:38:42.06\00:38:45.88 Not literally David, not literally his mighty men. 00:38:45.91\00:38:48.37 They are history. They are example. 00:38:48.40\00:38:51.19 The type is now meeting antitype in this prophecy. 00:38:51.22\00:38:56.23 And the prophet says, "The day is coming..." 00:38:56.54\00:38:59.01 "The day is coming," he says, "when the feeble among 00:38:59.04\00:39:03.12 God's people will be as mighty as David. 00:39:03.15\00:39:07.09 And the house of David will be as mighty as God, 00:39:08.26\00:39:12.44 as mighty as the Angel of the Lord. 00:39:12.47\00:39:14.19 And I will pour upon the house of David 00:39:15.93\00:39:19.30 the Spirit of grace and supplication. 00:39:19.72\00:39:22.48 And as the outpouring of God's Spirit comes upon 00:39:23.19\00:39:28.23 God's people at the end of time, they will look upon Me," 00:39:28.96\00:39:34.95 the prophecy says, "whom they have pierced." 00:39:34.98\00:39:38.90 What's happening now? 00:39:39.11\00:39:40.56 An extremely personal look at Calvary. 00:39:41.19\00:39:47.76 "They will look upon Me whom they have pierced." 00:39:48.29\00:39:51.01 Have you looked, have I looked, at Calvary as more than 00:39:51.04\00:39:56.82 merely a historic act? 00:39:56.85\00:39:59.13 As more than merely a doctrine? 00:40:00.37\00:40:02.68 As more than a theology or a teaching? 00:40:04.91\00:40:07.10 Have I found myself before the cross of Calvary 00:40:07.13\00:40:11.75 with the deep realization that He was pierced on my account? 00:40:11.78\00:40:17.32 In fact, my sin itself, in principle, 00:40:17.79\00:40:22.51 pierced Him. 00:40:24.17\00:40:25.54 In what sense did my sin pierce Him? 00:40:25.61\00:40:29.01 I wasn't there 2000 years ago. 00:40:29.04\00:40:30.98 It was those other people. 00:40:31.01\00:40:32.80 But in principle, sin itself in total, is the cause 00:40:32.83\00:40:40.31 of the sacrifice of Christ. 00:40:40.87\00:40:43.64 Sin in total, of which I am a partaker. 00:40:44.17\00:40:48.52 It wasn't the spear that was driven into His side 00:40:49.01\00:40:53.45 that took His life. 00:40:53.48\00:40:54.93 It wasn't the crown of thorns that was pressed upon His brow 00:40:54.96\00:40:58.03 that took His life. 00:40:58.06\00:40:59.43 Do we understand this? 00:40:59.46\00:41:00.89 It wasn't the nails driven through His hands. 00:41:01.74\00:41:04.14 Jesus, according to the gospel account, died prematurely. 00:41:04.17\00:41:07.95 Sabbath was coming. 00:41:08.82\00:41:10.26 And the religious leaders, they said to the Roman soldiers, 00:41:10.29\00:41:13.34 "You need to go break His legs 00:41:13.37\00:41:15.55 so He'll die before sundown. 00:41:16.73\00:41:19.31 I mean, if you're going to kill God, you want to make sure 00:41:19.34\00:41:22.23 you're keeping the Sabbath holy, right? 00:41:22.26\00:41:24.06 This ought to communicate very strongly to us 00:41:24.09\00:41:27.06 that it is possible to be deluded while imagining 00:41:27.09\00:41:32.39 that we are serving God. 00:41:32.42\00:41:33.94 In fact, I'm convinced that religion is the most popular 00:41:33.97\00:41:39.33 place in the world to hide from God. 00:41:39.36\00:41:41.30 Because it's very easy to persuade ourselves that 00:41:43.69\00:41:50.70 our zeal, and our particular bent of character, and our 00:41:50.77\00:41:55.30 particular interests are sanctified by giving it 00:41:55.33\00:42:00.32 a religious veneer. 00:42:00.35\00:42:01.97 So go break His legs. Why break His legs? 00:42:03.08\00:42:05.05 Because, the fact is that crucifixion was intended 00:42:05.08\00:42:09.11 to be a protracted long drawn out agonizing affair. 00:42:09.91\00:42:15.20 You were suppose to hang upon that cross for days 00:42:16.15\00:42:19.58 and just keep on suffering. 00:42:19.61\00:42:21.02 And the suffering was inflicted by the terrible engineering 00:42:21.05\00:42:28.18 of this method of torture. 00:42:28.21\00:42:32.04 The victim would hang. 00:42:33.30\00:42:35.13 Every tendon of his body wrenching downward 00:42:35.16\00:42:39.22 with his own body weight. 00:42:39.25\00:42:41.01 And the only way to stay alive was to yield to the impulse, 00:42:41.24\00:42:47.35 the instinct, to impose pain by lifting up again 00:42:47.38\00:42:52.51 on your hands to impose greater agony 00:42:52.54\00:42:56.37 to take another gasp of air, only to wrench down again. 00:42:56.86\00:42:59.67 And so you would stay alive by continuing to 00:43:01.74\00:43:06.79 suffer this horrible agony. 00:43:07.40\00:43:10.07 And it was suppose to go on for days. 00:43:10.61\00:43:12.55 "Go break His legs." 00:43:13.16\00:43:14.72 Why? Why break His legs? 00:43:15.12\00:43:17.04 So that He can't lift up anymore to breathe. 00:43:17.86\00:43:22.09 They wanted Him to die quickly. 00:43:22.12\00:43:23.73 And the Roman soldiers came to the cross, 00:43:23.76\00:43:25.80 and He was already dead. 00:43:25.83\00:43:28.86 Imagine the Roman soldiers coming to the cross, 00:43:30.12\00:43:33.14 ready to break the Savior's legs, only to refrain. 00:43:33.17\00:43:37.36 A prophecy actually had said that not one bone of His body 00:43:37.39\00:43:40.78 would be broken. 00:43:40.81\00:43:42.18 They come to break His legs and say, "Uh, this is strange. 00:43:43.16\00:43:48.27 We haven't seen this before. 00:43:49.30\00:43:51.17 He's already dead." 00:43:52.12\00:43:53.50 But why? 00:43:54.97\00:43:56.34 Jesus didn't die of physical causes. 00:43:56.37\00:43:58.60 Jesus didn't die because of what they did to His body. 00:43:59.89\00:44:03.60 Jesus died because of what we did to His heart. 00:44:03.63\00:44:07.31 Jesus died because of the weight of the guilt and shame, 00:44:08.34\00:44:14.44 the deep and dark psychological and emotional 00:44:14.47\00:44:17.74 horror that is inherent in all human transgression. 00:44:17.77\00:44:22.43 Jesus, according to the gospel account 00:44:23.01\00:44:25.31 in Matthew 26, actually began to die in Gethsemane. 00:44:25.93\00:44:30.92 He began to die before any physical torture 00:44:32.35\00:44:35.90 was inflicted upon Him. 00:44:35.93\00:44:37.64 As He went into Gethsemane with His disciples, 00:44:38.29\00:44:43.16 He said, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful 00:44:43.36\00:44:47.29 to the point of death." 00:44:47.32\00:44:49.00 Jesus said to them, "I'm dying right here, right now, 00:44:49.61\00:44:53.95 in the Garden of Gethsemane before I even reach the cross." 00:44:53.98\00:44:58.05 And He said, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful 00:44:59.17\00:45:02.51 to the point of death." 00:45:02.54\00:45:03.91 And the word "soul" that we have translated into the English 00:45:04.11\00:45:09.16 is the Greek word "psyche." 00:45:09.19\00:45:11.29 Jesus says to the disciples, "I'm dying at the 00:45:13.58\00:45:17.60 psychological level of My being." 00:45:17.63\00:45:20.40 Something is going on in His heart, in His mind, 00:45:21.12\00:45:24.23 in His thinking process, in His emotional process. 00:45:24.26\00:45:28.14 Something is going on in His psyche. 00:45:28.17\00:45:31.40 And He says, "That's where I'm dying." 00:45:31.72\00:45:34.18 Jesus staggers away from them, falls to the ground, 00:45:34.62\00:45:38.24 falls to the ground, and begins to pray. 00:45:38.28\00:45:40.47 This was no formal religious event. 00:45:40.50\00:45:43.94 He didn't say, "I think I shall pray," and get on His knees 00:45:44.14\00:45:48.40 and fold His hands. 00:45:48.43\00:45:49.80 No, Jesus staggers into the garden, He falls to the ground. 00:45:49.83\00:45:55.42 Desire Of Ages fills in a little bit of interesting language 00:45:55.45\00:45:59.48 for us and says that He began to clutch the cold ground 00:45:59.51\00:46:04.09 as if to prevent Himself from being drawn 00:46:04.12\00:46:07.19 farther away from the Father. 00:46:07.22\00:46:09.23 Jesus begins to feel the separation that sin makes 00:46:10.04\00:46:16.57 between God and man. 00:46:16.60\00:46:18.17 There is this massive chasm that is developing. 00:46:19.14\00:46:23.90 Now remember who He is, where He came from, 00:46:23.93\00:46:27.19 and what He has enjoyed to this point in His life. 00:46:27.22\00:46:30.92 According to John chapter 1, He was in the bosom of the Father. 00:46:31.37\00:46:36.68 He was in intimate fellowship with the Father 00:46:37.38\00:46:39.73 for all eternity past. 00:46:39.76\00:46:41.30 And it was out of that intimate friendship that He 00:46:42.45\00:46:45.50 came to our world incarnate in human flesh. 00:46:45.53\00:46:48.52 Jesus then proceeded through life to enjoy 00:46:48.90\00:46:52.40 fellowship with the Father. 00:46:52.43\00:46:54.17 To hear the Father's approving voice on occasions. 00:46:54.20\00:46:56.86 "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased," 00:46:56.89\00:47:00.73 was spoken over Him at His baptism. 00:47:00.76\00:47:03.27 And then again at the transfiguration, the Father 00:47:03.85\00:47:07.06 Himself spoke in the hearing of Peter, James, and John, 00:47:07.09\00:47:10.93 "This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him." 00:47:10.96\00:47:13.57 God was actually, on that occasion, interrupting 00:47:14.10\00:47:16.24 Peter who was blabbing on and on and on. 00:47:16.27\00:47:18.32 And God basically said, "Peter, stop talking. 00:47:18.35\00:47:20.93 On this occasion, listen to Him. 00:47:21.37\00:47:23.50 He's the one you need to be listening to." 00:47:23.53\00:47:25.88 He had heard the approving voice. 00:47:26.37\00:47:28.64 He had enjoyed divine fellowship. 00:47:29.05\00:47:31.13 And suddenly, He finds Himself in a situation in which 00:47:31.50\00:47:37.07 your sin and mine, the weight of the shame 00:47:37.67\00:47:43.21 that is inherent in human transgression begins to 00:47:43.24\00:47:48.80 come upon His conscience, His psyche, and He now stands, 00:47:48.83\00:47:54.70 according to Isaiah 53, He is numbered with the transgressors. 00:47:54.73\00:48:00.23 That's astounding language. 00:48:00.93\00:48:04.08 Numbered with the transgressors? 00:48:04.65\00:48:07.32 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, "He who knew no sin 00:48:08.20\00:48:13.99 became sin for us that we may become the 00:48:14.39\00:48:18.37 righteousness of God in Him." 00:48:18.40\00:48:19.77 Became sin for us. 00:48:19.80\00:48:22.15 Jesus Himself, when He was contemplating 00:48:22.51\00:48:25.62 what would be involved in this horrible ordeal 00:48:26.03\00:48:29.53 that He was voluntarily subjecting Himself to, 00:48:29.56\00:48:32.54 speaking of it Himself in that private conversation 00:48:32.57\00:48:36.89 with Nicodemus, He said, "Nicodemus, 00:48:36.92\00:48:39.33 let Me tell you what's about to happen. 00:48:39.36\00:48:41.42 Do you remember the account, Nicodemus, 00:48:42.00\00:48:44.44 where Moses lifted up the serpent on the pole 00:48:45.14\00:48:48.35 in the wilderness? 00:48:48.38\00:48:49.85 You remember, Nicodemus? 00:48:50.90\00:48:52.62 And the people were healed by looking. 00:48:53.58\00:48:55.97 Well, Nicodemus, that is what's going to happen to Me." 00:48:57.10\00:48:59.58 Jesus identified Himself with the serpent, 00:49:00.09\00:49:03.48 the biblical symbol for evil itself. 00:49:03.51\00:49:08.83 Jesus entered into full solidarity with the fallen 00:49:09.28\00:49:14.67 human situation. 00:49:14.70\00:49:16.81 He bore the weight of the sin of the whole world upon, 00:49:17.49\00:49:23.13 not His shoulders, but upon His conscience, upon His psyche, 00:49:23.16\00:49:28.30 upon His heart and mind. 00:49:28.33\00:49:29.83 When Jesus goes into Gethsemane, He is taking into Himself... 00:49:29.86\00:49:33.97 We could even use the language, the metaphor; 00:49:34.27\00:49:36.19 He's drinking into Himself. 00:49:36.22\00:49:38.31 He says, "Father, if it be possible, let this cup 00:49:38.34\00:49:41.39 pass from Me. 00:49:41.83\00:49:43.20 Nevertheless, I'll drink it if that's the 00:49:43.23\00:49:44.89 only way to save them." 00:49:44.92\00:49:46.33 So Jesus portrays what He's going through 00:49:46.90\00:49:51.20 as drinking a cup. 00:49:51.23\00:49:52.60 There is something in the cup. 00:49:52.63\00:49:54.37 It has content. 00:49:54.40\00:49:55.97 It's shame, it's guilt. 00:49:56.52\00:49:58.35 It's self-loathing. 00:49:58.38\00:50:00.12 It's precisely what you and I have felt on occasion 00:50:00.15\00:50:04.04 when you knew, when I knew, that I had failed miserably. 00:50:04.93\00:50:09.69 That I had violated the integrity of some relationship. 00:50:09.72\00:50:13.09 That I had brought pain and suffering to others 00:50:13.12\00:50:15.69 because of what I had done. 00:50:15.72\00:50:17.81 And finally my conscience, with acuity and accuracy, 00:50:17.84\00:50:22.86 wakes up to the reality of what I've done. 00:50:22.89\00:50:25.56 And I look in the mirror and I hate myself for what I've done. 00:50:26.14\00:50:30.30 Certainly, you've been there. 00:50:30.87\00:50:32.74 And those feelings of self loathing because of the 00:50:33.04\00:50:37.76 low and despicable degrading things that we've done; 00:50:37.79\00:50:41.56 our lying tongues, our gossip, our whispering behind 00:50:42.83\00:50:48.53 people's backs, our lusts, our greed, all of it. 00:50:48.56\00:50:57.51 He's drinking it. He's taking it in. 00:50:58.44\00:51:01.31 He's owning it. 00:51:01.34\00:51:03.10 Why? 00:51:03.58\00:51:04.95 For one simple and profound reason. 00:51:05.74\00:51:07.77 He literally loves you and me more than His own existence. 00:51:07.80\00:51:11.33 He would rather die forever than to give you up. 00:51:11.36\00:51:16.61 And He takes it all into His own heart and mind, 00:51:17.84\00:51:20.81 into His conscience, and He bears it there in Gethsemane. 00:51:20.84\00:51:25.88 And the gospel of Luke says that at that point 00:51:26.85\00:51:29.74 Jesus began to bleed. 00:51:30.36\00:51:33.95 Yes, He did bleed in Gethsemane. 00:51:35.54\00:51:37.62 No physical torture was inflicted upon Him as of yet. 00:51:37.65\00:51:40.91 And yet He's bleeding great drops of blood 00:51:40.94\00:51:44.59 coming out of His pores because of the internal agony 00:51:46.07\00:51:50.33 that He is undergoing. 00:51:51.04\00:51:52.66 Jesus is being traumatized by our sin. 00:51:53.44\00:51:57.53 He is... 00:51:58.59\00:51:59.96 To use the most crass possible language, and it doesn't even 00:52:00.27\00:52:03.62 approximate what He was going through. 00:52:03.65\00:52:05.67 He is stressed out to the max. 00:52:05.70\00:52:08.94 He is bearing in His own heart and mind the collective whole 00:52:09.44\00:52:13.28 of all human transgression. 00:52:13.31\00:52:15.64 And He feels it as if it is His own. 00:52:15.67\00:52:18.87 That is the nature of love. 00:52:18.90\00:52:20.93 Love, by its nature, feels what others feel. 00:52:20.96\00:52:27.19 The more I love you, the more I'm going to 00:52:28.66\00:52:31.00 suffer if you suffer. 00:52:31.03\00:52:32.75 We're suffering, we're the guilty parties. 00:52:33.30\00:52:36.53 But the genius of divine love is that it draws close, 00:52:36.56\00:52:41.52 it enters into solidarity. 00:52:41.55\00:52:43.43 He feels what we feel. 00:52:43.46\00:52:45.30 Jesus is bearing your sin and mine. 00:52:45.33\00:52:49.96 And that, my friends, is how you and I were there at Calvary. 00:52:49.99\00:52:55.26 When the prophecy says, "they," they who? 00:52:56.67\00:53:00.48 They of the eschatological generation. 00:53:00.51\00:53:03.14 Those of the translation generation. 00:53:03.17\00:53:05.61 Those at the end of time. 00:53:05.64\00:53:07.58 "...shall look upon Me whom they have pierced." 00:53:09.20\00:53:13.84 And they will mourn for Him. 00:53:14.36\00:53:16.32 Something incredibly vital and important is occurring here 00:53:16.72\00:53:21.03 in the spiritual experience of God's people at the end of time. 00:53:21.06\00:53:24.02 They are shifting their sympathies from themselves 00:53:25.20\00:53:28.86 to the Lord of glory. 00:53:29.74\00:53:31.17 "They shall look upon Me whom they have pierced 00:53:32.24\00:53:34.33 and mourn for Me." 00:53:34.36\00:53:36.76 In other words, we will begin to feel a deeper level of 00:53:37.58\00:53:43.89 repentance for the pain that sin has brought upon the Savior. 00:53:43.92\00:53:48.04 It won't so much be about "my salvation" at this point. 00:53:49.00\00:53:55.66 Yes, yes, from God's perspective... 00:53:55.76\00:53:58.56 This is how love works. 00:53:58.59\00:54:00.23 From God's perspective, it's all about me. 00:54:00.53\00:54:03.31 He is devoted to me, He wants to save me. 00:54:04.59\00:54:08.64 But from my perspective in my fallen condition, 00:54:09.63\00:54:14.67 at first when I begin my journey with the Lord, 00:54:14.70\00:54:17.29 it's all about me. 00:54:17.32\00:54:18.80 I'm guilty, I'm filled with shame. 00:54:19.00\00:54:21.10 I need salvation. I lack peace. 00:54:21.13\00:54:23.31 My whole life is spinning out of control. 00:54:23.34\00:54:25.38 I reach out to the Lord with self-serving, self-preserving 00:54:25.41\00:54:30.09 motives at first. 00:54:30.12\00:54:31.78 "Save me, save me, Lord." 00:54:31.81\00:54:36.56 But here's the thing. 00:54:36.59\00:54:38.30 The moment He saves you and me, He goes about the deep 00:54:38.50\00:54:42.64 inner task of shifting our motive from being 00:54:42.67\00:54:49.32 focused inward to being focused outward. 00:54:49.35\00:54:52.19 He immediately goes about the task of liberating us 00:54:52.65\00:54:56.15 from self-centeredness and installing, downloading, 00:54:56.18\00:55:01.57 His love into our psychological hard drive 00:55:01.60\00:55:06.00 in the place of all that self-centeredness. 00:55:06.03\00:55:08.49 And so we begin, as we look upon Him whom we have pierced, 00:55:09.26\00:55:14.62 we begin to mourn for Him. 00:55:14.65\00:55:16.43 "Oh God, what have we done to You? 00:55:17.07\00:55:18.95 What pain we've brought to You by our sin. 00:55:18.98\00:55:22.59 God please, by Your grace, empower us to bring glory and 00:55:23.08\00:55:29.85 honor to Your name. 00:55:29.88\00:55:32.04 Not merely so I can be saved, but so that the pain of this 00:55:32.70\00:55:37.82 horrible great controversy can be finally resolved 00:55:37.85\00:55:41.42 and lifted from Your heart. 00:55:41.45\00:55:43.10 And You can receive your children into Your fellowship 00:55:45.60\00:55:49.15 and experience the joy that was set before You 00:55:49.68\00:55:52.78 as You hung upon the cross." 00:55:52.81\00:55:54.86 "Look upon Him whom we have pierced and mourn for Him, 00:55:55.33\00:55:59.62 as one mourns for his only son, his firstborn Son." 00:56:00.42\00:56:04.77 There will be a people at the end of time who do mighty deeds. 00:56:06.02\00:56:12.45 There will be a people, according to Daniel chapter 11, 00:56:12.92\00:56:16.51 who do great exploits at the end of time. 00:56:16.54\00:56:19.88 They will achieve remarkable things in the advancement 00:56:21.53\00:56:26.42 of God's kingdom. 00:56:26.45\00:56:27.82 And the power and the strength that they will know 00:56:29.93\00:56:32.93 in this final movement, in the final revolution 00:56:34.33\00:56:37.30 that overtakes the human race, when that angel comes down 00:56:37.33\00:56:42.44 from heaven with great authority and power 00:56:42.47\00:56:46.15 and the whole earth is lightened with his glory, 00:56:46.72\00:56:49.27 when that final loud cry, latter rain, movement 00:56:49.84\00:56:53.77 really begins to occur, you'll know it, I'll know it. 00:56:53.80\00:56:57.69 Because Jesus Christ and Him crucified will be the center, 00:56:58.11\00:57:03.00 the substance, of the total message that those people 00:57:03.69\00:57:09.08 take to the world. 00:57:09.11\00:57:10.48 And it will break people's hearts and they will be drawn 00:57:10.51\00:57:14.39 back to Him by virtue of the love and grace 00:57:14.42\00:57:19.48 that was displayed in Christ at the cross. 00:57:19.51\00:57:23.00 Father in heaven, we want to be among those mighty men and women 00:57:23.63\00:57:33.29 of the end time. 00:57:33.32\00:57:34.90
