I appreciate it. 00:09:35.04\00:09:39.59 A real old hymn that we all love and appreciate. 00:09:39.62\00:09:45.87 I love the old hymns. Don't you? 00:09:46.13\00:09:48.06 I really do. 00:09:48.73\00:09:49.96 Reading tonight, and I hope you'll turn with me 00:09:50.98\00:09:53.53 with your Bibles, to Mark the first chapter. 00:09:53.54\00:09:57.14 I love the book of Mark, because mark is concise. 00:09:57.17\00:10:02.08 He does not fool around with a lot of words. 00:10:02.63\00:10:05.81 You know, I sometimes look at a book that Camille's reading 00:10:05.84\00:10:09.81 maybe, and she'll say, "Oh, this is so beautiful 00:10:09.84\00:10:13.26 because it's so descriptive. 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.78 And you read all of these different things about this 00:10:15.79\00:10:19.19 place or that, and all of the different descriptions of it." 00:10:19.22\00:10:24.30 And I read that and I say, just tell me the facts. 00:10:24.89\00:10:28.54 Just cut to the chase. 00:10:28.57\00:10:29.79 Mark just cuts to the chase. 00:10:30.09\00:10:33.50 He tells you the facts. 00:10:33.53\00:10:35.02 He says here in Mark the first chapter beginning with verse 14, 00:10:35.69\00:10:39.86 "Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, 00:10:39.89\00:10:46.10 preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, 00:10:46.13\00:10:51.12 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:10:51.13\00:10:55.71 Repent, and believe in the gospel.'" 00:10:55.74\00:11:00.16 Now that is quite a text. 00:11:00.87\00:11:04.02 Because he tells you an awful lot in just a very few words. 00:11:04.49\00:11:08.18 First of all, he gives you the setting. 00:11:08.87\00:11:11.13 John was now in jail. 00:11:11.88\00:11:15.33 John, the great preacher who had preached repentance. 00:11:15.92\00:11:19.01 John, the one who had been so much on the 00:11:19.04\00:11:22.93 tips of the tongues of the people, was now silenced. 00:11:22.96\00:11:28.30 He was not saying anything. 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.04 You see, the timing of Christ's ministry; so important. 00:11:31.89\00:11:36.63 The forerunner had come. 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.42 The forerunner had come and he had said, 00:11:38.43\00:11:40.35 "I'm not even worthy to unhook His shoes." 00:11:40.38\00:11:44.23 That was John the Baptist. 00:11:44.99\00:11:46.80 He had preached repentance. 00:11:47.03\00:11:48.87 And now he was in jail. 00:11:49.68\00:11:51.84 Christ did not begin His ministry until 00:11:51.87\00:11:56.05 John's ministry was cut short and stopped. 00:11:56.08\00:12:00.81 The timing; exactly the right time for Him to 00:12:01.28\00:12:07.56 begin His ministry. 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.20 And then we find something else. 00:12:09.65\00:12:11.43 The place that He began His ministry. 00:12:11.46\00:12:13.92 He began it in Galilee. 00:12:13.95\00:12:16.81 Now you have to understand a little bit about the geography 00:12:17.85\00:12:20.50 to understand why Galilee was so important for Him 00:12:20.53\00:12:24.60 to begin His ministry. 00:12:24.63\00:12:26.11 Understanding the geography of Israel and of Palestine 00:12:26.61\00:12:32.06 and of the area where Jesus was brought up is so very important. 00:12:32.09\00:12:37.05 Not long ago I heard a preacher, a wonderful preacher, 00:12:37.08\00:12:40.23 a great preacher. 00:12:40.26\00:12:41.26 But he's never been there and so he didn't understand 00:12:41.80\00:12:45.77 the geography. 00:12:45.80\00:12:47.71 And he was talking about the city of Samaria. 00:12:47.74\00:12:50.95 And there is not a city of Samaria. 00:12:52.03\00:12:55.24 Never has been. 00:12:55.27\00:12:56.59 There's a region of Samaria. 00:12:57.26\00:12:59.83 That's be like saying, the city of Puerto Rico. 00:12:59.86\00:13:03.65 Well, it's not the city of Puerto Rico. 00:13:04.83\00:13:07.24 There's San Juan, there's Mayaguez where we are. 00:13:07.27\00:13:09.81 I don't pronounce these names right. 00:13:09.84\00:13:11.19 You understand that. 00:13:11.22\00:13:12.45 I'm a Texan, so if I mess them up, you understand please. 00:13:12.92\00:13:17.08 But you see, understanding the geography helps you to 00:13:17.88\00:13:23.58 understand why Jesus would start in Galilee. 00:13:23.60\00:13:28.44 First of all, He had grown up in Galilee, in Nazareth. 00:13:28.47\00:13:31.94 Which is in the Galilee region. 00:13:31.97\00:13:35.18 He had grown up there. He had learned as a school boy. 00:13:35.78\00:13:39.19 Now I think He learned most of His lessons 00:13:39.22\00:13:41.03 at the foot of His mother. 00:13:41.06\00:13:42.51 But I don't have any question that He also attended 00:13:42.54\00:13:45.25 some school, had some reckoning. 00:13:45.28\00:13:47.76 Because He was a person who knew how to relate to people. 00:13:47.79\00:13:53.08 And I believe that He learned at the synagogue. 00:13:54.05\00:13:58.52 He learned from His mother. 00:13:58.53\00:14:00.63 He learned wherever He could learn. 00:14:00.66\00:14:02.76 He worked in Joseph's carpenter shop. 00:14:02.79\00:14:05.45 He knew how to build things. 00:14:06.40\00:14:10.44 Years later, I would imagine people would say, 00:14:11.20\00:14:13.43 "You see that chair? 00:14:13.44\00:14:14.54 Jesus built that chair. 00:14:15.53\00:14:17.20 He did that one Himself. 00:14:18.09\00:14:19.42 Look at the handiwork of that chair." 00:14:19.45\00:14:22.26 "Look at this table. 00:14:23.11\00:14:24.36 Jesus built this table. 00:14:25.33\00:14:27.30 Oh, what a carpenter He was." 00:14:28.50\00:14:32.75 I like a little music in the background when I'm preaching. 00:14:34.84\00:14:39.67 I appreciate that. That emphasizes it a little bit. 00:14:39.70\00:14:42.86 And then He also worshipped in the synagogue. 00:14:44.15\00:14:47.68 The synagogue was the center of the life of the people. 00:14:48.96\00:14:52.82 And He was there from the time He was a child growing up. 00:14:52.85\00:14:55.94 He knew all about it. 00:14:55.97\00:14:57.04 Don't think that He just showed up at the synagogue 00:14:57.07\00:14:59.61 when He was an adult. 00:14:59.91\00:15:01.11 He'd been going all of His life. 00:15:01.14\00:15:03.29 They knew Him. 00:15:03.59\00:15:04.83 When He came in, they said to Him, "We want You to read." 00:15:04.86\00:15:08.67 They knew He could. 00:15:09.07\00:15:10.70 They knew that Jesus understood what was going on. 00:15:11.82\00:15:16.94 So He lived, He thought, He spoke like a Galilean 00:15:16.97\00:15:21.02 because He had grown up there. 00:15:21.32\00:15:22.91 And so He began His ministry where He was familiar 00:15:22.94\00:15:27.90 with the people. 00:15:27.93\00:15:29.45 Where He was familiar with what went on. 00:15:29.48\00:15:32.73 But there's another reason why He went to Galilee. 00:15:32.74\00:15:35.84 Because Galilee was the most populace area 00:15:35.87\00:15:40.38 anywhere in all of Israel. 00:15:40.95\00:15:42.63 Josephus, in his book, his autobiography actually, 00:15:43.30\00:15:48.47 talks about there being over 200 cities of 15,000 or better 00:15:48.87\00:15:57.28 population in Galilee. 00:15:57.31\00:16:00.73 That means 3 million people. 00:16:00.76\00:16:03.65 I was there this past November. 00:16:04.50\00:16:06.64 Going next November, I hope. 00:16:06.65\00:16:08.57 And I will tell you, the excavations they're doing now 00:16:09.06\00:16:13.39 to some of those cities that weren't even done 00:16:13.42\00:16:15.90 the last time I was there. 00:16:15.93\00:16:17.48 All those towns, they're starting to excavate them. 00:16:18.14\00:16:21.83 And they're seeing that they were well populated. 00:16:21.86\00:16:26.18 Big population shift over the years. 00:16:27.25\00:16:29.60 Not that many people living in Galilee anymore. 00:16:29.63\00:16:33.29 At that time, Jerusalem had a good population. 00:16:33.99\00:16:37.88 It was large. 00:16:37.91\00:16:38.98 But when you added up all those cities of Galilee, 00:16:39.01\00:16:43.59 it was even larger. 00:16:43.60\00:16:45.23 Over 3 million in those 200 cities. 00:16:45.26\00:16:48.80 They had 19 fortified cities of the 200. 00:16:49.56\00:16:54.31 And they had an army, they had raised an army. 00:16:55.03\00:16:58.08 Josephus himself says he had raised an army because 00:16:58.11\00:17:00.97 he was the governor at that time of that region. 00:17:01.00\00:17:04.29 And he had raised an army of over 100,000 young people. 00:17:04.32\00:17:09.83 Young men that were in that particular army that protected 00:17:10.12\00:17:16.65 that northern region of the country. 00:17:16.68\00:17:20.38 So you see, this was a populated area. 00:17:20.85\00:17:23.64 This was an area that had the people. 00:17:23.67\00:17:27.47 First of all, Jesus was acquainted with it. 00:17:27.77\00:17:30.34 Secondly, there were people there. 00:17:30.37\00:17:32.75 And then thirdly, the character and the temperament 00:17:33.66\00:17:38.19 of those people were very likely to be receptive 00:17:38.22\00:17:43.02 to a new teacher and to new teachings. 00:17:43.36\00:17:46.88 You see, Jerusalem was different. 00:17:47.40\00:17:49.66 Jerusalem was kind of protected down there. 00:17:49.67\00:17:52.70 Judea was an area that was really not on the beaten path, 00:17:53.30\00:17:58.10 you might say. 00:17:58.13\00:17:59.15 You had to go off the beaten path to go to Jerusalem. 00:17:59.18\00:18:02.15 But Galilee was at the crossroads of the world. 00:18:03.23\00:18:08.76 I think it's very interesting even today for us to realize 00:18:09.43\00:18:15.45 how important that whole region is in the world. 00:18:15.75\00:18:22.00 Why do you think every time somebody sneezes over there 00:18:22.03\00:18:25.55 that you read about it in the news or that 00:18:25.58\00:18:27.95 you see it on television? 00:18:27.98\00:18:29.77 Every time there's any type of a small incident. 00:18:30.06\00:18:33.07 You see, if you actually look at that location between 00:18:33.10\00:18:36.38 Europe and between Africa, we right now are speaking to you 00:18:36.41\00:18:42.44 on a satellite that is operated by a company in Israel. 00:18:42.47\00:18:47.54 Now they also operate out of several other places, 00:18:48.02\00:18:51.46 including Pennsylvania. 00:18:51.49\00:18:54.21 And the one we're actually talking to you on now 00:18:54.61\00:18:57.01 is coming out of the headquarters for that 00:18:57.02\00:19:00.90 shooting up over North America is Pennsylvania. 00:19:00.93\00:19:05.95 But most of their satellites... 00:19:06.44\00:19:08.33 And I was there in November at RRsat that 00:19:08.36\00:19:11.72 operates these big satellites that we have, 00:19:11.75\00:19:14.26 all the ones for Europe and the ones for Africa, 00:19:14.29\00:19:17.63 and all of that area, shot from that one spot 00:19:17.66\00:19:21.42 up into the clouds. 00:19:22.01\00:19:23.88 Beaming the signals out into the sky. 00:19:24.46\00:19:28.76 Those satellites are covering Russia, Africa, Europe. 00:19:29.31\00:19:36.51 All of it from right there at the crossroads of the world. 00:19:36.54\00:19:41.56 So you see, it is still a vital and an important place. 00:19:42.39\00:19:48.48 And because those actual literal roads crossed in Galilee, 00:19:48.51\00:19:55.01 they were so acquainted with all the different philosophies. 00:19:55.04\00:19:59.94 They were acquainted with the different people. 00:19:59.95\00:20:02.36 They were an open people. 00:20:02.37\00:20:04.36 And when Jesus began to proclaim the gospel there, 00:20:05.01\00:20:08.30 it spread from that particular region. 00:20:08.33\00:20:14.23 Another thing that Josephus tells us is that these people 00:20:14.53\00:20:17.80 were fond of innovations. 00:20:17.83\00:20:20.27 They liked something new. 00:20:20.72\00:20:23.49 They were always ready for an insurrection. 00:20:23.85\00:20:26.85 They had a quick temper. 00:20:27.68\00:20:29.73 They were ready to respond. 00:20:30.44\00:20:32.14 If there was a rebellion going to take place, they were ready. 00:20:32.17\00:20:35.78 This is why they were so careful to make sure there were 00:20:35.81\00:20:38.83 plenty of Roman soldiers in that particular area. 00:20:38.84\00:20:42.59 In order to keep down any type of an insurrection. 00:20:42.62\00:20:48.49 They were never destitute of courage. 00:20:48.52\00:20:51.20 They said that a Galilean, it was more important for them, 00:20:51.23\00:20:57.20 according to the Talmud, honor was more important 00:20:57.23\00:21:01.68 to them than money. 00:21:01.71\00:21:03.10 More important than gain. 00:21:03.83\00:21:05.87 And chivalry was important to the Galilean. 00:21:06.71\00:21:11.03 Peter was the personification of a Galilean. 00:21:11.90\00:21:15.98 With his good traits and his bad traits, 00:21:16.73\00:21:20.53 you see the Galilean in Peter. 00:21:20.99\00:21:25.95 And this is the place where Jesus began His ministry. 00:21:26.52\00:21:33.98 Now you know, when a leader begins a ministry, 00:21:34.48\00:21:37.03 he needs to put into just a few words his message. 00:21:37.06\00:21:43.55 You get too broad a message, you get too many things 00:21:44.43\00:21:47.62 going on, and it's not clear. 00:21:47.65\00:21:49.97 I'm not going to get into politics. 00:21:50.43\00:21:52.11 By the way, I hate to admit this, I don't think I have 00:21:52.14\00:21:55.28 voted in a presidential election in at least 20 years. 00:21:55.31\00:22:00.01 I really don't think I have. Why? 00:22:00.04\00:22:02.05 Because I don't think any man has the answer to the problems. 00:22:02.08\00:22:05.77 I just don't think they do. 00:22:05.80\00:22:06.99 And I've thought that for a long time. 00:22:07.68\00:22:09.70 I've not felt like putting my stamp on anybody. 00:22:09.73\00:22:13.78 Now that may be a weakness. 00:22:13.81\00:22:15.39 If it is, you can go ahead and condemn me. 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.20 But I have prayed for every single one of them. 00:22:18.69\00:22:22.54 And I pray for our President right now. 00:22:22.57\00:22:25.34 And I pray for our Congress, and I pray for our Senators. 00:22:25.37\00:22:28.39 But I have not found anybody yet, and I don't think I will 00:22:28.83\00:22:33.49 before the Lord comes, that I can actually say, 00:22:34.82\00:22:37.41 I'm going to vote for this person or that person. 00:22:37.44\00:22:39.34 I just don't. 00:22:39.35\00:22:40.35 But I'm extremely interested in presidential politics. 00:22:40.36\00:22:43.88 I like to watch it. 00:22:44.41\00:22:45.94 It goes back to when I was a kid. 00:22:46.55\00:22:49.21 I remember the first time that I got really interested 00:22:49.24\00:22:53.79 was watching, actually, the democratic convention 00:22:53.82\00:22:58.48 when John Kennedy all of a sudden, this was 1956, 00:22:58.51\00:23:03.89 almost made a run. 00:23:04.19\00:23:06.58 And I turned to my dad and I said, "That man is going to 00:23:07.79\00:23:10.18 be President someday." 00:23:10.19\00:23:11.37 My dad said, "No, no." He said, "He's Catholic. 00:23:11.40\00:23:13.54 They'll never elect a Catholic." 00:23:13.57\00:23:15.16 Four years later, he was president of the United States. 00:23:15.19\00:23:19.15 But I remember that. I remember it so well. 00:23:19.70\00:23:22.84 I remember listening to all of these different politicians. 00:23:23.48\00:23:26.91 And usually, clear back, if you go clear back to Roosevelt, 00:23:26.94\00:23:32.88 it was, The New Deal. 00:23:32.91\00:23:34.40 You go to Lyndon Johnson, it was the... 00:23:35.17\00:23:37.87 What was it, the New Frontier? Or something like that. 00:23:37.90\00:23:40.74 New Society? The Great Society. 00:23:41.30\00:23:45.36 Whatever it was, he had a motto. Two or three words. 00:23:45.39\00:23:49.29 We've had some motto's happen in this particular 00:23:49.87\00:23:54.63 campaign that's going on right now, in the primary. 00:23:56.98\00:24:00.26 You remember one of them. 00:24:00.80\00:24:02.25 999, do you remember that? 00:24:02.98\00:24:05.82 That was a motto. 00:24:06.53\00:24:07.70 It stuck in your mind, see. 00:24:07.73\00:24:10.55 Very few words but it's sticking in your mind. 00:24:10.58\00:24:15.04 Jesus came forth with a message. 00:24:15.85\00:24:20.32 And His message was simple. 00:24:20.65\00:24:23.32 It was, repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:24:23.35\00:24:29.52 Repent. 00:24:30.16\00:24:31.40 And if you look at this, you see the imperative 00:24:31.94\00:24:35.13 and the indicative of Jesus. 00:24:35.16\00:24:37.21 And the imperative was, "I'm saying to you, woe," He said. 00:24:37.24\00:24:42.54 To Korazim and Bethsaida, Tyre and Sidon, and to Capernaum. 00:24:43.18\00:24:49.10 He said, "If Sodom and Gomorrah had been preached to like you 00:24:49.13\00:24:54.56 were preached to, they would have been saved." 00:24:54.57\00:24:57.86 You see, Jesus had a specific message of repentance. 00:24:59.14\00:25:06.61 You know, we don't really sometimes understand 00:25:07.20\00:25:09.31 what repentance is. 00:25:09.34\00:25:10.56 We don't really understand it. 00:25:11.55\00:25:13.17 If you break down the word, metanoia. 00:25:13.20\00:25:17.38 It's an interesting word. 00:25:17.41\00:25:19.28 Meta means after. 00:25:19.29\00:25:21.05 Noia has to do with thought. 00:25:21.07\00:25:23.46 So repentance is like an afterthought, 00:25:23.49\00:25:26.72 in that you repeat it. 00:25:27.84\00:25:29.50 You do something and you have an after thought. 00:25:29.80\00:25:33.13 That's what noia repentance is. 00:25:33.16\00:25:36.43 Pronoia is a forethought. 00:25:36.44\00:25:39.76 By the way, pronoia is better than metanoia. 00:25:39.79\00:25:44.27 If you can avoid something ahead of time, 00:25:44.30\00:25:47.58 it is so much better. 00:25:47.61\00:25:49.14 Noeo means the mind. 00:25:49.48\00:25:51.42 We get paranoia, that means an abnormal thought. 00:25:51.45\00:25:58.70 And so we get this noia, comes from repentance; 00:25:59.51\00:26:03.70 turn around. 00:26:03.73\00:26:05.22 Repentance is not some morbid self accusation. 00:26:05.84\00:26:11.38 It's not just a dread of hell. 00:26:11.74\00:26:14.25 That's not what repentance is. 00:26:14.28\00:26:16.33 Sometimes people think that you can repent 00:26:17.00\00:26:20.61 simply by just being sorry for your sins. 00:26:21.68\00:26:26.05 It's more than that. 00:26:26.08\00:26:27.21 More than that. 00:26:27.99\00:26:29.24 It contains four elements that we're going to look at. 00:26:29.81\00:26:33.31 First of all, the realization that one's actions were wrong. 00:26:33.51\00:26:39.40 Number two, sorrow for the wrong doing. 00:26:40.05\00:26:44.63 Number three, a changed attitude towards life. 00:26:45.43\00:26:50.49 Number four, a change of action. 00:26:50.52\00:26:53.71 These are all involved, these four things. 00:26:54.27\00:26:57.29 Very important as far as repentance. 00:26:57.32\00:27:01.69 Now when I was a young man growing up, 00:27:02.54\00:27:05.48 I had a couple of friends. 00:27:05.51\00:27:07.05 We were all the boys that were in the church. 00:27:08.23\00:27:11.38 My brother was a little younger. 00:27:11.41\00:27:13.53 He had one or two friends that were younger. 00:27:13.56\00:27:16.36 I had one or two friends that were about the same age. 00:27:17.12\00:27:19.91 Except one was a little older. 00:27:19.94\00:27:21.56 We really had a lot of fun together. 00:27:32.67\00:27:37.13 Now we looked forward to prayer meeting night. 00:27:38.31\00:27:41.19 Not just for the prayer meeting, although that was part of it. 00:27:42.64\00:27:47.17 But mostly so we could be together. 00:27:48.20\00:27:49.96 We especially looked forward to prayer meeting night 00:27:49.99\00:27:52.52 one time a month. 00:27:52.55\00:27:54.74 Because it had a church board afterwards. 00:27:55.28\00:27:57.33 And sometimes those church board meetings 00:27:58.28\00:28:00.15 would go on and on and on. 00:28:00.18\00:28:02.83 That was great. 00:28:02.86\00:28:04.38 Because we would find something to do outside that was fun. 00:28:05.50\00:28:12.15 I can remember that we usually would try to make sure 00:28:12.93\00:28:16.56 somebody had a few balloons along. 00:28:16.59\00:28:19.43 And we would fill them with water. 00:28:19.77\00:28:21.91 And then we would wait for a car to come by 00:28:22.68\00:28:25.58 and we would through those balloons and hit the cars. 00:28:25.68\00:28:30.45 And now the fun began because, especially in those days, 00:28:31.40\00:28:35.09 it seemed like every car we ever hit the driver would 00:28:35.12\00:28:38.34 throw on the breaks. 00:28:38.37\00:28:39.89 We would start running. 00:28:39.92\00:28:41.56 And often the driver would get out and chase us. 00:28:41.59\00:28:44.88 This day and age, we don't do that. 00:28:45.50\00:28:47.73 If they get away with a wet car, they just go on. 00:28:47.74\00:28:50.61 Afraid something else might happen if they 00:28:50.64\00:28:52.61 get out of the car. 00:28:52.64\00:28:53.85 Not in those days. 00:28:53.88\00:28:55.12 They would chase you down and try to punish you 00:28:55.15\00:28:58.38 if they possibly could. 00:28:58.41\00:29:00.15 Now we were fast and I don't remember them ever catching us. 00:29:00.18\00:29:04.51 I do remember one guy. 00:29:04.54\00:29:06.01 He was in a convertible. 00:29:06.04\00:29:07.52 And we all three hit him with balloons. 00:29:08.85\00:29:12.97 And then we started running. 00:29:14.07\00:29:16.04 Now that's when the excitement starts when you start running. 00:29:16.07\00:29:18.37 Your heart is pounding, you know. 00:29:18.38\00:29:20.11 And you're trying to get away. 00:29:20.14\00:29:21.98 And we ran into a garage, somebody's garage 00:29:22.01\00:29:25.01 down an alley about half a block from the church. 00:29:25.04\00:29:27.51 And we were lying there breathing so hard. 00:29:27.54\00:29:31.27 I was just sure he could hear us breathing. 00:29:31.30\00:29:33.65 And here he comes down the alley. 00:29:33.95\00:29:35.88 And he looked in there. 00:29:36.47\00:29:38.27 But somehow he didn't see us. 00:29:39.12\00:29:41.72 And then he went on. 00:29:42.38\00:29:43.81 Now a couple of times Jimmy Don came to see me, 00:29:44.72\00:29:48.75 it seemed like we were always throwing something. 00:29:48.78\00:29:51.78 I remember one day we were throwing rocks at cars. 00:29:52.13\00:29:57.06 But we were being very careful to throw only at the tire, 00:29:57.83\00:30:02.37 the hubcap. 00:30:02.87\00:30:04.13 Not the car itself. 00:30:05.09\00:30:06.55 Just trying to see if we could hit the tires. 00:30:07.50\00:30:09.76 Well, one of those rocks came up. 00:30:11.18\00:30:14.35 They use to have the little side mirrors on the cars. 00:30:14.97\00:30:18.66 On the side. Not mirror, but glass. 00:30:18.69\00:30:21.97 A little, you know. 00:30:22.00\00:30:23.49 And it hit that and broke it. 00:30:24.06\00:30:27.00 And we immediately walked away like... 00:30:28.13\00:30:31.17 It really was an accident. We meant to hit the tire. 00:30:31.68\00:30:35.22 And it just kind of did that and hit the side of the car. 00:30:35.69\00:30:38.90 So we hid. 00:30:39.35\00:30:41.14 And then we thought, no we better not. 00:30:41.74\00:30:43.78 So we walked real nonchalant down by my dad 00:30:43.81\00:30:47.00 who was doing some painting on the house. 00:30:47.03\00:30:49.70 And the man pulled in the driveway. 00:30:50.34\00:30:52.70 And that cost my dad. He had to pay. 00:30:54.60\00:30:59.08 And I remember what it was. 00:30:59.66\00:31:01.22 It was like 15 bucks, something like that. 00:31:01.25\00:31:04.35 That was quite a little bit of money at the time. 00:31:04.38\00:31:07.24 And dad had to pay for that. 00:31:08.14\00:31:10.39 He told the man where to go to get it fixed. 00:31:10.42\00:31:12.44 Then he took that out of my hide a little later on. 00:31:13.35\00:31:18.20 He was about to the place where he said maybe Jimmy Don 00:31:21.80\00:31:26.64 couldn't come over anymore because 00:31:26.65\00:31:28.27 we always got into trouble. 00:31:28.30\00:31:29.85 And then we moved down into the country a little ways. 00:31:30.25\00:31:33.82 We got down there and I went out one day. 00:31:33.85\00:31:38.54 Jimmy Don was there and we were out around the place. 00:31:38.57\00:31:42.04 We were living on a pretty good size acreage, you know, 00:31:42.41\00:31:45.46 out in the country. 00:31:45.49\00:31:46.53 And we found a nest of chicken eggs. 00:31:46.97\00:31:52.27 And I knew that they were never going to hatch because 00:31:52.30\00:31:54.77 we didn't have a rooster. 00:31:54.80\00:31:56.17 And so I knew they would be very ripe. 00:31:56.99\00:32:02.38 Very rotten. 00:32:02.94\00:32:04.75 And we got those eggs, we went over by the highway, 00:32:05.69\00:32:09.55 we got under the bridge. 00:32:10.14\00:32:12.31 I got on one side, he got on the other side. 00:32:12.99\00:32:15.50 We saw a car coming down the road. 00:32:15.90\00:32:18.01 And I pitched mine, he pitched his. 00:32:18.04\00:32:20.45 Now people were driving down the road and their window was open. 00:32:20.48\00:32:25.99 One of those eggs went in the window. 00:32:27.01\00:32:29.26 I'm not sure which one. 00:32:29.29\00:32:31.19 The other hit like on the windshield. 00:32:31.29\00:32:33.82 This man had just washed his car. 00:32:34.98\00:32:37.05 They had just gotten dressed up to go out to eat. 00:32:37.64\00:32:40.32 We didn't know that. 00:32:40.33\00:32:41.33 Of course we just saw a car coming down the road. 00:32:41.34\00:32:43.52 We found this out later when he came back to our house. 00:32:43.72\00:32:47.01 And my dad had to pay for a car wash. 00:32:47.95\00:32:52.08 And my dad had to pay to have the dry cleaning done. 00:32:53.08\00:32:57.07 I remember both of those that he paid for. 00:32:57.10\00:33:00.90 And again, he took Jimmy Don home 00:33:01.53\00:33:04.87 and he took the cost out of my hide. 00:33:04.90\00:33:08.83 I paid for it. 00:33:09.38\00:33:10.86 Now I had done something wrong. 00:33:11.26\00:33:13.86 I didn't really repent. 00:33:14.38\00:33:16.86 I was sorry we were caught. 00:33:17.43\00:33:19.66 But it wasn't really true repentance. 00:33:20.42\00:33:24.03 Now once my dad applied his belt, it did become 00:33:24.38\00:33:30.59 a little bit more like true repentance. 00:33:30.62\00:33:33.67 Because I suddenly realized I had really done something wrong. 00:33:33.70\00:33:38.42 And you see, repentance is when you turn around. 00:33:38.45\00:33:42.06 You turn around. 00:33:42.52\00:33:43.78 You're no longer going the way you were going. 00:33:43.81\00:33:46.62 You're going this way, you're going the wrong way. 00:33:46.92\00:33:49.75 And then you come to your senses and you turn around 00:33:49.78\00:33:54.03 and you head the other way. 00:33:54.06\00:33:55.53 Now tonight, we were coming here to the meeting. 00:33:56.80\00:34:00.40 We got the directions from the gentleman at the hotel. 00:34:01.52\00:34:05.26 I don't know whoever taught him how to give directions. 00:34:06.38\00:34:09.93 But we followed those directions to a tee. 00:34:09.96\00:34:14.49 And we did not come anywhere near this church. 00:34:15.06\00:34:19.30 We were a long way away. 00:34:20.10\00:34:21.94 We called Pastor John. 00:34:21.97\00:34:23.76 He got a hold of Brother Dennis. 00:34:24.47\00:34:26.65 Brother Dennis drove and met us and brought us here. 00:34:26.97\00:34:30.95 When we realized we were going the wrong way, we repented 00:34:30.98\00:34:34.69 and turned around and went back. 00:34:34.99\00:34:38.77 And we were told how to go back. 00:34:38.80\00:34:40.62 They said, "Go back." 00:34:40.65\00:34:41.92 And they gave us a place, "Go back to there and 00:34:41.94\00:34:44.52 stay there," they said. 00:34:44.55\00:34:46.72 "We'll meet you there and bring you on." 00:34:47.07\00:34:50.89 And, wow, was it good to have somebody leading the way. 00:34:51.72\00:34:56.11 I hate to tell you what Camille said. 00:34:56.41\00:34:58.22 But she said, "I won't go back to the hotel with you 00:34:58.86\00:35:02.05 unless we're following somebody." 00:35:02.08\00:35:03.68 That road that we were on was quite a road. 00:35:04.64\00:35:08.26 And I repent that I got on the wrong road. 00:35:09.03\00:35:15.37 You see, we must see our need of repentance. 00:35:15.87\00:35:21.76 Now when Jesus was talking, you would think that He was 00:35:22.09\00:35:25.27 going into the bars and talking about repenting. 00:35:25.28\00:35:28.17 You would think that He was going out and finding 00:35:28.18\00:35:31.36 those who were operating in sin. 00:35:31.39\00:35:34.55 No, He went to the synagogue. 00:35:34.58\00:35:36.48 He went to the religious leaders. 00:35:37.80\00:35:40.06 He went to the Pharisees. 00:35:40.81\00:35:43.14 And He said to them and the Sadducees and the scribes, 00:35:43.85\00:35:47.45 and He said, "Repent." 00:35:47.46\00:35:50.11 Now you know, they never thought they needed to repent. 00:35:51.78\00:35:54.68 They were religious people. 00:35:54.71\00:35:56.63 Why would they need to repent? 00:35:57.28\00:35:59.97 Because they are so good. 00:36:00.00\00:36:02.70 I will tell you today, you don't hear many sermons 00:36:04.59\00:36:06.99 about repentance. 00:36:07.02\00:36:08.11 You may have never heard one. 00:36:08.97\00:36:10.56 You may be hearing the first you've ever heard. 00:36:10.59\00:36:12.59 You may have heard them before. 00:36:13.13\00:36:14.67 And people think that those who need to repent 00:36:15.53\00:36:18.63 are those who are stealing, killing, committing adultery. 00:36:18.83\00:36:22.23 Sure they need to repent. 00:36:22.26\00:36:23.59 But these are not the ones that Jesus was talking to primarily. 00:36:25.90\00:36:29.87 Primarily, Jesus was talking to religious people. 00:36:30.64\00:36:36.21 You see, I'm a Pharisee. 00:36:37.82\00:36:39.72 I'm a religious person. 00:36:40.39\00:36:42.25 Paul said he was the Pharisee of the Pharisees. 00:36:42.28\00:36:45.97 But you see, real sin, if you really understand what sin is, 00:36:47.27\00:36:51.50 you know that we all need repentance. 00:36:51.53\00:36:55.68 Because sin is not just stealing, killing, 00:36:56.62\00:37:01.75 and committing adultery. 00:37:01.77\00:37:03.57 Sin involves pride. 00:37:05.01\00:37:08.13 Pride of opinion even. 00:37:08.80\00:37:10.67 Certainly the Lord tells us that it's the greatest 00:37:10.70\00:37:13.28 pride of all. 00:37:13.31\00:37:14.65 See, nobody ever kicked you out of the church 00:37:15.61\00:37:17.42 for having an opinion. 00:37:17.45\00:37:18.86 They'll never disfellowship you for that. 00:37:20.16\00:37:23.06 They might disfellowship you for a nasty divorce, 00:37:23.09\00:37:26.50 or something like that. 00:37:26.53\00:37:27.67 But they won't for having pride of opinion. 00:37:27.70\00:37:31.43 Jesus says these sins are the sins we have to repent from. 00:37:32.65\00:37:39.99 You see, when He found the woman taken in adultery, 00:37:41.27\00:37:43.78 He was kind to her. 00:37:43.81\00:37:45.80 He restored her in kindness and in love. 00:37:47.68\00:37:53.25 But He reserved His hardest words for religious people. 00:37:54.61\00:37:58.88 Not just because they didn't accept Him, 00:38:00.20\00:38:03.23 but because He knew of the pride in their heart. 00:38:04.32\00:38:09.91 Religious pride. 00:38:09.94\00:38:11.78 It was religious pride that eventually put Him on the cross. 00:38:11.79\00:38:15.27 The thief on the cross cried out to Him. 00:38:16.80\00:38:19.29 But you don't find any of those Pharisees crying out to Him. 00:38:20.71\00:38:26.47 You don't find that. 00:38:27.59\00:38:29.08 Why? 00:38:30.03\00:38:31.14 Because they did not feel their need. 00:38:31.44\00:38:33.68 Religious pride, more than anything else, 00:38:34.82\00:38:40.88 put Jesus on the cross. 00:38:40.91\00:38:43.21 You may be the elder of the church, but my friend, 00:38:43.22\00:38:47.50 if you have not repented of the pride in your heart 00:38:48.57\00:38:53.38 and turned away from that and sought Jesus, 00:38:53.95\00:38:58.84 then you do not know what true repentance is. 00:38:59.74\00:39:06.52 You see, I believe with all of my heart that we do 00:39:07.69\00:39:11.95 need to repent. 00:39:11.96\00:39:15.64 And this is not something that we can do just on our own. 00:39:16.53\00:39:19.84 You see, we're not to trust Christ because we repent, 00:39:19.87\00:39:23.84 but we trust Christ to make us repent. 00:39:23.87\00:39:29.98 We're not to come to Jesus because we have a broken heart, 00:39:30.55\00:39:34.15 but to come to Christ that He may give us a broken heart 00:39:34.16\00:39:40.26 and sorrow for sin. 00:39:41.01\00:39:44.41 We're not to come to Him because we're fit 00:39:44.44\00:39:46.38 to come to Him, but we're to come to Him because we're 00:39:46.41\00:39:50.63 unfit in every way to come to Him. 00:39:50.66\00:39:55.91 You see, our fitness is our unfitness. 00:39:55.94\00:39:59.44 Our qualification is our lack of qualification. 00:39:59.75\00:40:05.03 And we must come to Him. 00:40:05.59\00:40:08.63 We do not repent in order to be saved, 00:40:08.93\00:40:11.33 but we repent because we have received His salvation. 00:40:12.30\00:40:18.31 We do not hate sin and hope to be saved, 00:40:19.32\00:40:22.34 but we come to Jesus asking Him to help us to hate sin 00:40:22.79\00:40:30.67 and to turn away from sin. 00:40:30.97\00:40:34.72 You see, repentance is something that is so difficult sometimes 00:40:35.35\00:40:41.81 to put your finger on. 00:40:41.84\00:40:43.48 It does not save you. 00:40:43.78\00:40:46.12 But you can't be saved without it. 00:40:46.15\00:40:48.25 But just repenting doesn't save us at all. 00:40:49.49\00:40:52.96 But we have to repent in order to be saved. 00:40:54.17\00:40:58.43 Repent and confess and turn away, and walk with Jesus; 00:40:58.91\00:41:06.23 turning our direction completely. 00:41:07.02\00:41:10.60 The Bible says in Acts the 17th chapter and verse 30, 00:41:11.15\00:41:13.97 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; 00:41:13.99\00:41:17.30 but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent." 00:41:17.33\00:41:22.65 If you go in the book of Revelation and you read the 00:41:22.68\00:41:25.89 seven churches, eight times it says, "repent." 00:41:25.92\00:41:33.43 "Repent or I'll remove My candlestick," Jesus says. 00:41:34.63\00:41:39.42 And these seven churches represent every aspect 00:41:40.14\00:41:44.65 of our church today. 00:41:44.68\00:41:46.47 Every aspect is still represented. 00:41:47.22\00:41:49.35 Even though it was represented at that time, 00:41:49.38\00:41:51.28 you look at it and it all, especially Laodicea, 00:41:51.31\00:41:55.62 but all of them represent our churches, or church. 00:41:55.83\00:42:02.70 And sometimes even us individually today. 00:42:03.29\00:42:06.48 And Christ says, "Unless you repent," He says, "I will 00:42:06.51\00:42:11.22 remove My candlestick." 00:42:11.25\00:42:15.99 You see, we sometimes get the idea that if we just 00:42:16.66\00:42:21.93 turn around and go the other direction, 00:42:21.96\00:42:25.54 confess, do the best we can to live, that this is what 00:42:26.58\00:42:30.72 Christ is talking about. 00:42:30.75\00:42:31.98 But no, what Christ is talking about is for Him to take 00:42:32.00\00:42:35.83 full charge of our life. 00:42:35.86\00:42:37.46 Full charge. 00:42:38.25\00:42:39.70 When we repent, it will not gain anything for us 00:42:40.01\00:42:45.96 unless we depend upon Him for eternal life. 00:42:46.67\00:42:52.15 That's the only way that we can have life. 00:42:52.35\00:42:54.88 You see, the law demands a penalty. 00:42:54.91\00:42:57.12 Somebody does a crime and he is sorry for it. 00:42:58.22\00:43:05.41 And he goes to the warden and he says, "You can let me out 00:43:05.44\00:43:10.43 because I am sorry for my sin. 00:43:11.41\00:43:14.93 I confess it, I'm sorry for it. Now let me out. 00:43:15.78\00:43:20.79 Just open the gates, tell them to open the gates, 00:43:21.09\00:43:23.60 and I'll be headed on back home." 00:43:23.63\00:43:26.00 And the warden will say to him, "Well, I'm very happy that 00:43:27.05\00:43:29.76 you're sorry, but you're going to have to pay the penalty." 00:43:29.79\00:43:33.66 Somebody has to pay the penalty. 00:43:33.69\00:43:36.40 You see, every sin that I've ever committed, 00:43:36.43\00:43:38.79 every sin that you've ever committed, 00:43:39.44\00:43:41.30 the penalty has to be paid. 00:43:42.66\00:43:45.55 Either you pay it yourself at the end of time 00:43:46.27\00:43:52.36 in the destruction of the wicked, or else Christ, 00:43:52.39\00:43:56.10 you allow Him to pay it on the cross. 00:43:56.13\00:43:58.21 But it has to be paid. 00:43:59.34\00:44:00.94 One place or the other. 00:44:01.49\00:44:03.68 There is absolutely no sin that is ever committed 00:44:04.08\00:44:10.06 that does not have to be paid for. 00:44:10.64\00:44:13.04 Either by ourselves or by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:44:13.60\00:44:22.04 And so, we must actively handle repentance through faith. 00:44:22.07\00:44:30.05 And without faith, there's no genuine repentance. 00:44:30.35\00:44:33.59 It's a two-headed coin. 00:44:33.62\00:44:35.02 You have a coin that's got heads and tails on it. 00:44:35.72\00:44:38.84 You can't flip a coin to somebody and say, 00:44:39.71\00:44:41.87 "I'm only flipping tails to you." 00:44:41.90\00:44:43.62 They get both, heads and tails. 00:44:44.76\00:44:47.45 Repentance on one side, faith on the other. 00:44:47.48\00:44:51.43 They go hand and hand together. 00:44:51.46\00:44:56.03 The human mind is made up of intellect, which is our mind. 00:44:56.55\00:45:01.22 The human being is made up of the mind, 00:45:01.52\00:45:04.88 it's made up of emotions which is the heart, 00:45:04.91\00:45:07.67 of the volition which is our will. 00:45:07.70\00:45:10.53 These three things, and all three of these, 00:45:10.56\00:45:14.28 must be involved in our repentance. 00:45:14.99\00:45:20.60 And we must determine that we will turn away, 00:45:21.16\00:45:25.88 that we will give our lives to Jesus Christ our Lord. 00:45:26.67\00:45:30.57 William Cowper, it's spelled Cowper, 00:45:31.12\00:45:35.44 is a man from England. 00:45:36.60\00:45:38.07 William Cowper's mother died when he was young. 00:45:39.69\00:45:42.54 And he had a very horrible life with his father and stepmother. 00:45:44.21\00:45:50.52 They sent him off to school. 00:45:51.86\00:45:53.41 His father was an attorney and he sent him off 00:45:53.42\00:45:57.03 to become an attorney. 00:45:57.04\00:45:58.04 But William was not at all cut out to be an attorney. 00:45:58.05\00:46:02.30 And he had a nervous breakdown right at the time 00:46:03.86\00:46:09.04 of the final test to become an attorney. 00:46:09.76\00:46:13.45 He was institutionalized. 00:46:14.24\00:46:15.99 They thought that he would never ever recover. 00:46:16.43\00:46:22.06 But there was a man there. 00:46:23.14\00:46:24.79 A man that was kind and loving and loved the Lord. 00:46:25.86\00:46:33.90 He actually took the book of Romans, 00:46:35.26\00:46:37.87 Romans the 3rd chapter, and he read it to William. 00:46:37.90\00:46:43.06 He read those texts to him and then he asked him 00:46:44.09\00:46:47.52 to read them again himself. 00:46:47.55\00:46:50.65 Romans the 3rd chapter verses 21 through 26 00:46:51.66\00:46:56.54 are the verses that he read. 00:46:56.88\00:46:58.96 And he gave his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:47:00.38\00:47:06.48 When he was well, they placed him with a family. 00:47:07.34\00:47:12.56 He lived quite well with the family. 00:47:13.46\00:47:16.81 And later, the family moved to Olney in England. 00:47:18.05\00:47:24.63 And he moved with them. 00:47:24.66\00:47:25.95 Now in Olney, he began to go to a chapel where there was a 00:47:27.47\00:47:32.80 man by the name of John Newton, who was the preacher. 00:47:32.83\00:47:37.15 John Newton's story and William Cowper's story 00:47:38.28\00:47:41.92 in many ways parallel. 00:47:41.95\00:47:43.53 Except that John Newton also was a sea captain. 00:47:43.54\00:47:47.62 But these two men began to write songs together. 00:47:48.81\00:47:53.48 They wrote a hymn book called, Olney Hymns. 00:47:54.25\00:47:59.03 I think there are 379 or 380 hymns in there. 00:47:59.06\00:48:03.87 And something like 66 of those were written by William Cowper. 00:48:03.90\00:48:09.01 Cowper's life had changed. 00:48:10.13\00:48:12.49 He had hated God when his mother had died. 00:48:13.39\00:48:16.05 He blamed God because people had told him that 00:48:16.92\00:48:19.69 God had taken his mother to heaven. 00:48:19.72\00:48:23.67 And it was part of the reason that he had 00:48:25.82\00:48:28.99 this nervous breakdown. 00:48:29.02\00:48:30.76 Now he had accepted Christ. 00:48:31.75\00:48:35.38 His life had been changed. 00:48:36.44\00:48:38.34 Completely and totally changed. 00:48:39.13\00:48:42.47 And now he was writing hymns. 00:48:43.49\00:48:47.42 Just like John Newton's life had been changed 00:48:48.11\00:48:50.66 and he wrote hymns like Amazing Grace. 00:48:50.69\00:48:52.97 Cowper wrote a hymn that is in our hymnal. 00:48:53.68\00:48:58.41 And it's called, "There Is A Fountain" filled with blood, 00:48:59.56\00:49:07.22 flowing from Immanuel's veins. 00:49:08.18\00:49:11.09 I'm going to ask Pastor John if he would come right now 00:49:11.97\00:49:17.32 and sing that song that William Cowper wrote. 00:49:18.31\00:49:21.29 There is a fountain filled with blood. 00:49:21.83\00:49:24.29 You see, the only way that we can repent is if 00:49:24.80\00:49:27.40 Jesus Christ helps us to repent. 00:49:27.43\00:49:30.25 True repentance has to come from Him. 00:49:30.28\00:49:33.10 It can't come. 00:49:33.64\00:49:34.76 We can't build it up ourselves. 00:49:34.79\00:49:36.89 We can't be just sorry for sin. 00:49:36.92\00:49:39.00 It has to be a repentance that we receive from Him. 00:49:39.28\00:49:43.99 And we must claim the cross of Jesus. 00:49:44.98\00:49:48.38 We must be bought by the blood. 00:49:49.07\00:49:53.70 There is a fountain filled with blood 00:50:10.76\00:50:18.99 drawn from Immanuel's veins; 00:50:19.02\00:50:25.80 and sinners plunged beneath that flood 00:50:27.09\00:50:34.55 lose all their guilty stains. 00:50:34.58\00:50:42.11 Lose all their guilty stains, 00:50:42.31\00:50:50.13 lose all their guilty stains. 00:50:50.48\00:50:57.13 And sinners plunged beneath that flood 00:50:58.13\00:51:05.65 lose all their guilty stains. 00:51:05.68\00:51:13.37 The dying thief rejoiced to see 00:51:13.77\00:51:21.50 that fountain in his day; 00:51:21.53\00:51:28.54 and there may I, though vile as he, 00:51:29.47\00:51:36.78 wash all my sins away. 00:51:36.81\00:51:44.37 Wash all my sins away, 00:51:44.67\00:51:52.50 wash all my sins away. 00:51:52.80\00:52:00.25 And there may I, though vile as he, 00:52:00.28\00:52:07.87 wash all my sins away. 00:52:07.90\00:52:16.89 Ever since by faith I saw the stream 00:52:19.44\00:52:27.92 Thy flowing wounds supply; 00:52:27.95\00:52:35.57 redeeming love has been my theme, 00:52:35.60\00:52:42.92 and shall be till I die. 00:52:43.22\00:52:50.19 And shall be till I die, 00:52:50.39\00:52:58.85 yes it shall be till I die. 00:52:59.02\00:53:06.73 Your redeeming love has been my theme, 00:53:06.76\00:53:14.18 and shall be till I die. 00:53:14.62\00:53:24.09 Yes it shall be 00:53:25.63\00:53:31.17 till I die. 00:53:31.20\00:53:41.14 Thank you, John. 00:53:53.67\00:53:55.00 You see, my friend, it's only by the blood. 00:53:55.79\00:53:58.78 Only by the blood. 00:53:59.80\00:54:01.39 Coming to Him, receiving Him. 00:54:02.91\00:54:06.18 You see, even our righteousness, the Bible tells us, 00:54:06.68\00:54:09.96 are as filthy rags. 00:54:09.99\00:54:11.93 We wonder how that can be. 00:54:12.78\00:54:13.91 We know our sins are as filthy rags. 00:54:13.94\00:54:16.45 But you see, He was even talking to those who are Pharisaical. 00:54:17.76\00:54:22.25 And He was saying to us, "Your righteousness 00:54:22.90\00:54:27.68 is righteousness of your own. 00:54:28.36\00:54:31.12 It's not from Me." 00:54:32.09\00:54:33.72 Every moment of every day that we walk, 00:54:34.30\00:54:38.84 we must walk with Him. 00:54:39.49\00:54:41.35 When Peter got out of that boat and he started walking on water, 00:54:41.65\00:54:45.47 he was walking on the water. 00:54:45.50\00:54:47.79 Which is impossible. 00:54:47.82\00:54:49.88 And you see, the Christian life is impossible, 00:54:50.59\00:54:53.61 except with Jesus. 00:54:54.01\00:54:56.46 By looking at Him. 00:54:57.91\00:54:59.37 The minute Peter took his eyes off Jesus, 00:55:00.20\00:55:04.63 for whatever reason; fear, doubt, pride, whatever, 00:55:04.66\00:55:10.01 he went down. 00:55:11.24\00:55:12.69 For whatever reason we take our eyes off Jesus. 00:55:13.05\00:55:18.59 We have absolutely no strength of our own. 00:55:19.87\00:55:24.32 Because even our goodness, which will sometimes 00:55:24.35\00:55:27.87 really deceive us, is not good enough. 00:55:29.02\00:55:34.49 It must be the goodness of Christ 00:55:34.52\00:55:37.53 always and forever, in us and through us. 00:55:38.41\00:55:44.20 It must be Him. 00:55:44.83\00:55:46.42 Jesus alone. He is the only way. 00:55:46.88\00:55:50.70 I walked life's path with an easy tread, 00:55:51.35\00:55:53.58 I wondered where pleasure and riches led. 00:55:53.61\00:55:55.83 Until one day in a quiet place 00:55:55.86\00:55:59.24 I met the Master face to face. 00:55:59.99\00:56:02.94 I met Him and knew Him and blushed to see 00:56:02.97\00:56:07.58 that His eyes full of mercy were fixed upon me. 00:56:08.15\00:56:12.54 And then I turned my eyes upon Jesus, 00:56:12.55\00:56:16.39 looked full in His wonderful face, 00:56:16.98\00:56:20.11 and the things of earth grew strangely dim 00:56:20.75\00:56:25.35 in the light of His glory and His grace. 00:56:25.38\00:56:30.27 Father in heaven, tonight we thank You 00:56:30.30\00:56:33.98 that You have told us the way. 00:56:35.16\00:56:38.13 That we should repent and come to You, 00:56:38.67\00:56:42.54 and trust in You. 00:56:42.94\00:56:44.93 To rely upon You, Lord, as the only way to life eternal. 00:56:44.96\00:56:53.25 Help us to turn from pride, to turn from that sin 00:56:54.17\00:56:58.97 which so easily besets us. 00:56:59.00\00:57:00.60 Which is the sin of trying to save ourselves. 00:57:00.61\00:57:04.67 And help us to let You save us. 00:57:05.73\00:57:08.88 In Jesus' wonderful and powerful and loving name we ask it, amen. 00:57:09.18\00:57:17.36 And amen. 00:57:18.19\00:57:19.59
