Welcome to Anchors Of Truth live from Sacramento California. 00:00:12.36\00:00:17.61 Doctrines That Divide with Doug Batchelor. 00:00:17.64\00:00:20.73 Well thank you, Tom Mann, and we are coming to you live 00:00:22.56\00:00:26.01 from Sacramento California and the 00:00:26.04\00:00:28.55 Sacramento Central Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:28.58\00:00:33.66 And we're so happy to be here. 00:00:33.69\00:00:35.92 It's been a beautiful day here in northern California. 00:00:35.95\00:00:38.85 The temperature has just been pretty close to perfect. 00:00:38.88\00:00:42.03 But the best temperature anywhere is right here 00:00:42.06\00:00:46.00 in this congregation tonight. 00:00:46.03\00:00:47.93 Isn't that right. 00:00:47.96\00:00:49.11 Amen, alright. 00:00:49.31\00:00:50.88 We have an enthusiastic group here as Pastor Doug is bringing 00:00:50.91\00:00:55.66 us the most unique series that I personally have ever seen. 00:00:55.67\00:01:00.73 It is a series where he is playing both parts in a debate. 00:01:00.76\00:01:06.87 Where he is Pastor Doug and then he is another pastor. 00:01:07.26\00:01:12.29 I think he called him Pastor Barney. 00:01:12.30\00:01:14.26 So that has become a very interesting exchange. 00:01:14.29\00:01:21.13 And tonight the subject is, The Time Of Your Life. 00:01:21.16\00:01:26.15 Now that is going to be an extremely interesting subject. 00:01:26.18\00:01:31.79 We're going to invite Pastor Doug in a moment, 00:01:31.82\00:01:34.04 but before we do, I'd like for you to join me 00:01:34.05\00:01:36.90 in a word of prayer. 00:01:36.93\00:01:38.09 Father in heaven, tonight we're so thankful that we can 00:01:38.12\00:01:42.33 come to You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. 00:01:42.36\00:01:45.63 That He, our great High Priest, our Lord, our God, our Creator, 00:01:46.25\00:01:53.00 our Savior, that He is standing ready to be the One 00:01:53.01\00:02:00.04 that speaks for each of us. 00:02:00.07\00:02:02.83 And Father, we thank You that His blood upon the cross has 00:02:02.86\00:02:07.34 paid for the sins of each one of us. 00:02:07.37\00:02:11.36 Now tonight, Father, we pray that Your Holy Spirit 00:02:11.66\00:02:15.07 will be abundantly poured out upon, not only on all of us that 00:02:15.87\00:02:19.92 are here in this auditorium, but on those who are 00:02:19.95\00:02:23.73 watching around the world. 00:02:23.76\00:02:25.98 And we thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. 00:02:26.01\00:02:30.91 Well, Pastor Doug Batchelor, would you join me on the stage. 00:02:31.30\00:02:34.94 And I think this is one of the most unique sets 00:02:34.95\00:02:39.43 that I have ever seen. 00:02:39.46\00:02:40.99 And this suit is definitely a very unique suit. 00:02:41.02\00:02:45.70 Now a friend of mine tuned in late last night. 00:02:45.73\00:02:48.33 So he didn't hear the explanation. 00:02:48.36\00:02:50.49 And perhaps you'd like to explain again a little bit about 00:02:50.52\00:02:54.18 that suit and why the two different colors. 00:02:54.21\00:02:57.17 Alright, Pastor Gilley. 00:02:57.20\00:02:58.78 This is actually a uniform that will help people recognize 00:02:58.81\00:03:03.93 when I'm representing a couple of different sides 00:03:03.96\00:03:07.40 of an argument. 00:03:07.41\00:03:08.41 We're talking about doctrines that divide. 00:03:08.44\00:03:10.61 And I thought to myself, television is a visual medium. 00:03:10.64\00:03:14.80 Let's create a different kind of suit. 00:03:14.83\00:03:17.71 And let's face it, how many times have you been surfing 00:03:17.74\00:03:20.53 through the TV channels and you see all kinds of preachers 00:03:20.56\00:03:22.99 standing there at a pulpit pontificating? 00:03:23.02\00:03:25.08 They're going to pause on this channel for at least a moment 00:03:25.90\00:03:28.55 to try to understand the new fashion. 00:03:28.58\00:03:31.00 And so, I'm just trying to get them to at least slow down 00:03:31.71\00:03:33.84 and listen for a moment, and might catch their hearts. 00:03:33.85\00:03:36.67 I can hardly wait to see the kids start wearing these though. 00:03:36.70\00:03:39.42 This is going to be the new rage, I believe. 00:03:39.45\00:03:43.15 And by the way, I'm very interested in your 00:03:43.61\00:03:47.37 counterpart, Pastor Barney. 00:03:47.40\00:03:49.34 Is it Barney Fife? 00:03:49.37\00:03:51.13 I didn't know whether you had a last name for him. 00:03:53.29\00:03:55.56 I tried to pick a name that would not have any, 00:03:55.59\00:03:57.83 wouldn't be disparaging for anyone living or dead. 00:03:57.86\00:04:01.59 But I didn't mean to say anything against Barney Fife. 00:04:01.62\00:04:05.94 No, no. I'm just... 00:04:05.97\00:04:07.83 We just feel like that was a well chosen name. 00:04:07.86\00:04:11.61 I feel that you're doing a great job with that name. 00:04:11.62\00:04:15.04 And listen, we're looking forward to tonight's subject, 00:04:15.07\00:04:17.83 The Time Of Your Life. 00:04:17.86\00:04:19.89 We're going to be talking about the Sabbath. 00:04:19.92\00:04:21.73 Alright, and we are ready for the time of our life. 00:04:21.76\00:04:24.60 Thank you so much, Pastor Gilley. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.25 God bless you, it's good to be with you. 00:04:26.28\00:04:27.37 And I want to again thank 3ABN for joining Amazing Facts 00:04:27.38\00:04:32.36 in this program. 00:04:32.37\00:04:33.47 It's very exciting to be able to participate in this special 00:04:34.19\00:04:37.18 Anchors Of Truth series. 00:04:37.21\00:04:38.85 And we've enjoyed a partnership in soul winning for many years. 00:04:38.86\00:04:42.98 Now I probably should explain a little bit one more time 00:04:43.76\00:04:48.33 what's happening here with this set and with this suit. 00:04:48.36\00:04:53.54 I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.80 And I've not always been a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:04:58.51\00:05:01.63 I started out as a Christian with a number of 00:05:03.03\00:05:06.50 evangelical groups. 00:05:06.53\00:05:07.87 I don't even know if they were organized denominations. 00:05:07.90\00:05:10.60 And as I began to study the Bible, I just found there were 00:05:11.54\00:05:14.60 so many differences in Christian teachings 00:05:14.63\00:05:17.84 that it really grieved me, because I said 00:05:17.85\00:05:20.19 there's one Bible, there's one Jesus Christ. 00:05:20.22\00:05:22.56 And yet today, there are about 34,000 different branches 00:05:22.57\00:05:26.22 of Christians in the world. 00:05:26.25\00:05:27.79 And so, at the time I was living in the mountains. 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.76 I went back up to my cave where I was living and I prayed. 00:05:30.77\00:05:36.03 And I said something to the effect, "Lord, it doesn't matter 00:05:36.43\00:05:40.04 to me exactly what denomination or church I belong to, but 00:05:40.07\00:05:44.61 I want to follow the Bible." 00:05:44.64\00:05:46.22 And I said, "Lord, show me where to go." 00:05:46.25\00:05:49.07 And after praying, the Lord began to reveal to me 00:05:49.37\00:05:52.22 the things that turned out to be the teachings of the 00:05:52.25\00:05:56.64 Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:05:56.67\00:05:58.18 And I had no family connection, I had no reason to join 00:05:58.83\00:06:03.36 the church, other than as I studied in the Bible, 00:06:03.37\00:06:06.41 it made more sense to me that it was biblical. 00:06:06.44\00:06:09.69 And I want to go to heaven. 00:06:09.72\00:06:11.07 And I want to please the Lord. 00:06:11.81\00:06:13.67 And I believe when I read the Bible that Jesus tells us 00:06:13.70\00:06:17.49 that He's coming back for a united people. 00:06:17.52\00:06:20.70 And right now, His church is so fragmented. 00:06:20.73\00:06:23.11 That's the devil's plan. 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.78 And so the reason I'm doing this series is, over the course of 00:06:24.81\00:06:29.30 my time as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:06:29.33\00:06:31.75 I've heard a number of different arguments 00:06:32.84\00:06:35.87 for different doctrines. 00:06:36.07\00:06:37.67 And so what's going to happen is, in our presentation tonight 00:06:37.70\00:06:40.99 we're going to be talking about the Sabbath. 00:06:41.02\00:06:42.55 When you think about Seventh-day Adventists, 00:06:42.58\00:06:44.67 probably the most outstanding doctrine that people think of 00:06:45.07\00:06:48.89 is the Sabbath. 00:06:48.92\00:06:50.82 Because let's face it, even the Seventh-day Adventists 00:06:50.85\00:06:53.59 could worship in a Baptist church; we believe in 00:06:53.62\00:06:56.77 baptism by emersion. 00:06:56.80\00:06:58.26 And we could worship in a Methodist church; 00:06:58.27\00:07:00.18 we believe in sanctification. 00:07:00.21\00:07:01.95 And we could worship in a lot different churches 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.02 and sort of melt in. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.47 Except, obviously, we worship on a different day. 00:07:05.50\00:07:08.25 And so that creates a whole divisive issue all by itself. 00:07:08.26\00:07:12.42 And so when I stand over here, I'll be defending biblical truth 00:07:12.45\00:07:18.15 from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective. 00:07:18.18\00:07:19.93 And then I've created this imaginary figure 00:07:20.50\00:07:22.98 we're calling Pastor Barney. 00:07:23.01\00:07:24.69 And he is sort of a conglomerate of all the different arguments 00:07:25.26\00:07:29.04 that I've heard over the course of my life. 00:07:29.07\00:07:31.35 Now someone's probably thinking, "Why, Pastor Doug, 00:07:31.38\00:07:33.97 is this ever narcissistic. 00:07:34.45\00:07:35.97 You have to debate yourself." 00:07:36.00\00:07:37.99 But really, I thought in order for me to cover all the 00:07:38.39\00:07:41.57 different points and objections that I've heard, 00:07:41.60\00:07:44.26 this is for me, I thought, a creative way to present it. 00:07:44.66\00:07:48.38 And I've never done anything like this before, 00:07:48.41\00:07:49.93 so I appreciate your prayers. 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.65 But tonight's subject is dealing with the Sabbath truth. 00:07:51.68\00:07:56.18 And I thought it would be appropriate for us to begin 00:07:56.21\00:07:58.87 by going to that commandment that you're going to find 00:07:58.90\00:08:01.58 in your Bibles. 00:08:01.61\00:08:02.74 It's in Exodus chapter 20. 00:08:02.77\00:08:05.08 It's the fourth of the Ten Commandments. 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.81 If you're a Protestant, you number it as the fourth. 00:08:09.54\00:08:11.97 And that begins with verse 8. Exodus 20 verse 8. 00:08:12.70\00:08:15.88 He made it holy. 00:08:47.91\00:08:48.92 Now there's the commandment. 00:08:49.57\00:08:50.84 And the reason that Seventh-day Adventist Christians keep the 00:08:50.87\00:08:54.68 Sabbath day is because it's one of the Ten Commandments. 00:08:54.71\00:08:58.40 Now if there is a doctrine that we should allow to 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.15 become divisive, I would think it would be a doctrine that 00:09:02.18\00:09:05.01 God spoke with His voice and wrote with His finger. 00:09:05.04\00:09:07.40 There are probably a lot of things that are not essentials 00:09:07.75\00:09:10.55 in Christianity that we might debate and talk about 00:09:10.58\00:09:13.22 that really aren't going to make a difference in the long run. 00:09:13.25\00:09:15.69 But if sin is the transgression of God's law, 00:09:16.02\00:09:18.95 and if God's perfect will is revealed in His law... 00:09:19.59\00:09:23.50 Psalm 40 verse 8 says, "Yea, I love to do Thy will. 00:09:23.53\00:09:28.64 Thy law is within my heart." 00:09:28.67\00:09:31.15 So the law of God is the will of God. 00:09:31.45\00:09:33.74 Then it does make a difference if Christians are neglecting or 00:09:34.14\00:09:38.71 violating or seeking to do away with one of the commandments. 00:09:38.72\00:09:42.79 And so we're going to take some time and 00:09:42.82\00:09:44.91 talk about this tonight. 00:09:44.94\00:09:46.17 And I'm going to be sharing with you, when I assume my 00:09:46.18\00:09:49.55 alter ego here, what some of the most common arguments 00:09:49.58\00:09:53.10 are that I've heard. 00:09:53.11\00:09:54.15 And so we're going to go through these, I've sort of 00:09:54.18\00:09:55.80 summarized them in about ten points. 00:09:55.81\00:09:57.97 And the first one is, was the Sabbath just for the Jews? 00:09:58.00\00:10:03.71 And we're going to let Pastor Barney start off here. 00:10:04.28\00:10:07.39 Okay Pastor Doug, I want to hear an explanation for this. 00:10:08.81\00:10:12.21 Exodus 31:16 and 17. 00:10:12.24\00:10:15.55 We heard you read the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20. 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.40 This is Exodus 31. It clarifies the Sabbath. 00:10:18.43\00:10:22.26 And it says: 00:10:22.27\00:10:23.27 And then one more, Deuteronomy 5. 00:10:41.42\00:10:45.07 Now the Lord gives the Ten Commandments, 00:10:45.10\00:10:47.04 not only in Exodus 20, but He also repeats the 00:10:47.07\00:10:49.84 Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy chapter 5. 00:10:49.87\00:10:52.38 And listen to the little additional verse that He 00:10:52.41\00:10:55.93 gives in Deuteronomy that you don't find in Exodus. 00:10:55.96\00:10:58.35 Verse 12, Deuteronomy 5:12. 00:10:58.75\00:11:01.42 "And remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt 00:11:01.45\00:11:04.58 and that the Lord your God brought you out hence 00:11:04.61\00:11:07.53 through a mighty hand and stretched out arm. 00:11:07.56\00:11:09.57 Therefore, the Lord thy God commanded thee to 00:11:09.60\00:11:12.19 keep the Sabbath Day." 00:11:12.29\00:11:13.76 And so, brother Doug, you should not be making people feel guilty 00:11:14.02\00:11:18.09 about keeping this commandment. 00:11:18.12\00:11:20.10 That this particular commandment was for the Jewish people. 00:11:20.11\00:11:23.77 And I've just read you two verses. 00:11:23.80\00:11:25.31 It was distinct and different from the others. 00:11:25.34\00:11:28.17 Okay Pastor Barney, first thing that comes to mind 00:11:29.07\00:11:31.51 when I hear someone say that is, do you believe that any 00:11:31.54\00:11:34.93 of the other Ten Commandments are just for the Jews? 00:11:34.96\00:11:38.22 I mean, you think about it, are only Jews suppose to 00:11:45.32\00:11:49.01 not worship images? 00:11:49.02\00:11:50.05 A lot in the New Testament about us not being 00:11:50.06\00:11:52.84 involved in idolatry. 00:11:52.87\00:11:54.17 The whole mark of the beast issue is talking about, 00:11:54.20\00:11:57.10 do not worship the image of the beast. 00:11:57.13\00:11:59.67 So idolatry is still there. 00:11:59.70\00:12:01.31 Honoring God's name is one of the, it's in the Lord's prayer. 00:12:01.71\00:12:05.32 You talk about not having other gods. 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.93 Obviously, Christians and Jews should keep that. 00:12:09.94\00:12:12.52 So why would this one commandment 00:12:12.55\00:12:14.83 only be for the Jewish people? 00:12:14.86\00:12:16.50 The Lord didn't give the Jews the Sabbath 00:12:17.60\00:12:20.97 right there on Mount Sinai. 00:12:21.00\00:12:22.97 The Sabbath predates Mount Sinai. 00:12:23.00\00:12:26.07 You can go all the way back to... 00:12:26.10\00:12:27.71 Oh, I've got a bug flying around my head here. 00:12:28.76\00:12:30.95 He's going to distract me. 00:12:31.58\00:12:32.72 We'll edit that out. Sorry, friends. 00:12:32.74\00:12:34.48 You go all the way back to Genesis chapter 2, 00:12:36.37\00:12:40.29 is when you first find the Sabbath. 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.95 It tells us in Genesis 2 verse 2 and verse 3 00:12:43.57\00:12:46.63 that the Sabbath was made in the very beginning for man. 00:12:46.66\00:12:49.71 Matter of fact, let's read that. Mark chapter 2 verse 27. 00:12:49.74\00:12:52.43 "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 00:12:53.43\00:12:57.25 Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath." 00:12:57.28\00:13:00.39 Wouldn't that have been a good place for Jesus to say, 00:13:00.42\00:13:03.31 "The Sabbath is made for the Jews." 00:13:03.34\00:13:06.37 But He didn't, He used a word there that describes mankind. 00:13:06.40\00:13:10.22 And isn't it true that everybody needs to rest? 00:13:10.78\00:13:14.60 Would you think perhaps that the Lord wants Christians to keep 00:13:15.19\00:13:19.34 a different day for the Sabbath than He does the Jews? 00:13:19.37\00:13:22.17 Isaiah 56 verses 6 and 7. 00:13:22.59\00:13:25.25 "Also the sons of the stranger who join themselves to the Lord, 00:13:25.28\00:13:29.31 to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, 00:13:29.34\00:13:31.90 to be His servants, everyone that keeps the Sabbath, 00:13:31.93\00:13:35.25 from polluting it..." 00:13:35.28\00:13:36.43 The sons of the stranger, non Jews, 00:13:36.46\00:13:39.83 that join themselves to the Lord, they become children 00:13:39.86\00:13:43.63 of God, and He specifically mentions keeping the Sabbath. 00:13:43.64\00:13:48.25 One of the signs that we become God's is in keeping the Sabbath. 00:13:48.28\00:13:52.78 "...from polluting it, and takes hold of My covenant." 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.86 It's one of the laws God writes in your heart 00:13:56.54\00:13:58.56 even in the new covenant. 00:13:58.57\00:13:59.90 "Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, 00:14:01.72\00:14:03.79 and make them joyful in My house of prayer." 00:14:03.82\00:14:06.11 And a matter of fact, if you go to Isaiah chapter 66, 00:14:06.14\00:14:09.06 it tells us that even in heaven, from month to month, 00:14:09.09\00:14:13.41 or from one new moon to another, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, 00:14:13.44\00:14:16.49 shall all flesh come together and worship before the Lord. 00:14:16.52\00:14:20.58 So Pastor Barney, do you think when we get to heaven 00:14:21.15\00:14:23.01 there's going to be one Sabbath that the Jews worship the Lord 00:14:23.02\00:14:26.08 and one Sabbath that the Gentiles worship the Lord? 00:14:26.11\00:14:29.02 That wouldn't make any sense to me. 00:14:29.62\00:14:31.32 Sabbath was made for everybody. 00:14:31.93\00:14:34.47 Alright, second point. 00:14:34.50\00:14:37.33 Now when I stand here, I'm sort of the moderator. 00:14:38.17\00:14:40.66 Okay? 00:14:40.69\00:14:41.78 Not that this is a fair fight. 00:14:41.81\00:14:43.12 I told you that in our last presentation. 00:14:43.15\00:14:45.13 Did the resurrection change the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday? 00:14:46.11\00:14:52.65 Again, Pastor Barney. 00:14:53.05\00:14:54.65 What do you have to say about that? 00:14:54.68\00:14:56.36 If you read in Matthew chapter 28 verse 1, it says: 00:14:57.28\00:15:02.00 And that was the day of the resurrection. 00:15:09.99\00:15:11.49 So Pastor Doug, do agree that Jesus rose from the dead 00:15:11.52\00:15:14.95 on the first day of the week, Sunday? 00:15:14.98\00:15:17.02 Yes. 00:15:18.25\00:15:19.56 Alright, if you agree with that, Matthew 28:1, it says, 00:15:20.19\00:15:24.03 "Now after the Sabbath..." 00:15:24.06\00:15:25.34 That verse there actually has a deeper spiritual meaning. 00:15:25.37\00:15:28.92 "After the Sabbath," means after the ages of the Jewish Sabbath, 00:15:28.95\00:15:33.34 Jesus rose on the first day of the week to begin 00:15:33.37\00:15:37.16 a new dispensation. 00:15:37.19\00:15:40.09 And the fact that He rose on Sunday, it says they 00:15:40.12\00:15:43.02 gathered that evening. 00:15:43.05\00:15:44.78 That was the first Sunday gathering 00:15:44.81\00:15:47.31 to inaugurate the new Sabbath. 00:15:47.34\00:15:49.29 Pastor Barney, it actually says that they gathered 00:15:49.92\00:15:52.57 for fear of the Jews. 00:15:52.60\00:15:54.21 Can you please show me where the verse says that they 00:15:54.24\00:15:56.35 gathered to inaugurate a new commandment or to move that day? 00:15:56.38\00:15:59.94 Let's go to another verse here. 00:16:01.26\00:16:02.85 Luke 24 verse 1. 00:16:02.88\00:16:05.45 Jesus rose Sunday to inaugurate the new Sabbath 00:16:17.23\00:16:21.18 for the Christians. 00:16:21.21\00:16:22.58 Again, Pastor Barney, I have no problem saying that Jesus rose 00:16:24.90\00:16:28.96 on the first day of the week. 00:16:28.97\00:16:30.00 And that was very important. 00:16:30.03\00:16:31.58 But where does it say in this verse that this now became 00:16:31.61\00:16:34.40 the new Sabbath commandment? 00:16:34.43\00:16:35.92 It doesn't say that, does it. 00:16:35.95\00:16:37.99 In fact, everywhere I look in the Bible, it tells us that 00:16:38.02\00:16:42.85 the Sabbath is still intact. 00:16:42.88\00:16:44.41 If you read the verse just before, Luke 23:56, 00:16:44.42\00:16:47.76 notice what that says. 00:16:47.79\00:16:48.98 Just before that resurrection Sunday, we agree it was Sunday, 00:16:49.01\00:16:52.22 it says, "They returned and prepared spices 00:16:52.25\00:16:55.34 and fragrant oils. 00:16:55.35\00:16:56.71 And they rested on the Sabbath according to..." 00:16:56.74\00:17:00.54 The Jewish tradition? 00:17:01.05\00:17:02.54 The ceremonial Sabbath? 00:17:03.36\00:17:06.32 No, it says, "... the commandment." 00:17:06.35\00:17:08.32 And by the way, was Luke a Gentile or was Luke a Jew? 00:17:08.35\00:17:12.74 Luke was a Gentile that Paul met probably when he 00:17:14.31\00:17:16.81 went to Macedonia. 00:17:16.84\00:17:18.14 Okay, so here you've got the only Gentile writer in the Bible 00:17:18.64\00:17:22.25 who is referring to the Sabbath in a matter of fact way. 00:17:22.28\00:17:26.06 And it says that the disciples would not break the Sabbath day 00:17:26.09\00:17:29.40 even to finish embalming His body. 00:17:29.43\00:17:32.03 That means that after three and a half years of watching Jesus 00:17:32.06\00:17:35.90 and hearing Jesus teach, that when He died and they were 00:17:35.91\00:17:39.24 heartbroken and they had not yet finished wrapping 00:17:39.27\00:17:43.31 and preparing His body, when they saw the sun going down 00:17:43.32\00:17:46.47 they stopped because they said, "This is a commandment 00:17:46.50\00:17:50.16 of God and Jesus. 00:17:50.19\00:17:51.51 God the Son would not want us breaking this commandment." 00:17:51.54\00:17:54.92 Pastor Doug, the reason for that is they were Jews and they were 00:17:57.06\00:18:00.43 following the Jewish law. 00:18:00.46\00:18:02.24 That is not an obligation on Gentile Christians. 00:18:02.27\00:18:05.02 And until Jesus actually rose, they were still under 00:18:05.05\00:18:08.83 the old dispensation. 00:18:08.86\00:18:10.10 Once Jesus rose, they're now under the new dispensation. 00:18:10.13\00:18:14.03 Well I've got a problem with that, Pastor Barney. 00:18:14.82\00:18:16.70 The way that laws work with a will and a covenant, 00:18:17.40\00:18:21.41 a testament, is once a person makes out their will 00:18:21.44\00:18:25.35 and they explain the terms of their will, and they seal 00:18:25.38\00:18:28.64 their will and they die, you cannot add anything else 00:18:28.67\00:18:33.25 to their will and their testament. 00:18:33.28\00:18:35.19 They add what they want to add. 00:18:35.22\00:18:37.08 The Lord, when He gave the new testament to the disciples 00:18:37.48\00:18:40.75 during the last supper, He told them during those previous 00:18:40.78\00:18:43.32 three and a half years what the terms of His kingdom were. 00:18:43.35\00:18:46.47 He never said anything about coming to introduce a 00:18:46.50\00:18:49.14 new Sabbath day. 00:18:49.15\00:18:50.15 When He dies, it is sealed in blood. 00:18:50.16\00:18:53.74 The idea that you're creating a new commandment after Jesus 00:18:53.77\00:18:57.04 died and sealed the new testament with His blood, 00:18:57.07\00:18:59.74 you're manufacturing a new law. 00:18:59.77\00:19:02.06 Well, but we've got examples where they continue to keep it 00:19:02.86\00:19:06.08 after that time. 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.30 Alright, well that will be probably a good segue 00:19:08.66\00:19:10.86 into point number three in our study. 00:19:10.89\00:19:14.06 Or what we would call the first day of the week? 00:19:17.45\00:19:19.95 Pastor Barney? 00:19:21.35\00:19:22.64 Yes they did. There are several examples. 00:19:23.66\00:19:26.17 The morning of the resurrection, well of course they came to the 00:19:26.20\00:19:28.49 tomb together, Sunday morning. 00:19:28.52\00:19:30.52 That evening they gathered together in the upper room. 00:19:30.55\00:19:33.54 Then we find there's an example in Acts chapter 20 verse 7. 00:19:33.57\00:19:36.83 So if you've got your Bibles, note this. 00:19:36.86\00:19:38.85 And this is pretty deep into the acts of the apostles. 00:19:39.41\00:19:42.20 This is after the church is well established. 00:19:42.23\00:19:44.99 And it says here: 00:19:45.02\00:19:46.28 They came together on the first day of the week to break bread. 00:19:57.05\00:20:00.29 Break bread, that's a communion service. 00:20:00.32\00:20:02.19 Here they were, gathering together to read the Bible, 00:20:02.22\00:20:05.17 to listen to a sermon, to have a communion service. 00:20:05.20\00:20:08.10 Obviously, this was the custom of the disciples. 00:20:08.13\00:20:10.83 Sunday was the new Sabbath. 00:20:10.84\00:20:13.36 First, I've got to challenge you on a couple of points there. 00:20:15.95\00:20:18.40 You said that because they broke bread, that meant now it's 00:20:18.43\00:20:22.20 a new Sabbath day. 00:20:22.23\00:20:23.55 According to my Bible, if you look in Acts chapter 2 verse 46. 00:20:23.58\00:20:27.96 By the way, I think we're using the same Bible. 00:20:27.97\00:20:30.02 Acts chapter 2 verse 46. 00:20:30.64\00:20:33.68 How often? Daily. 00:20:36.74\00:20:39.02 Here they were breaking bread on a daily basis. 00:20:47.58\00:20:51.17 The Middle Eastern bread, as it is today it was back then, 00:20:51.20\00:20:54.28 it came baked in round loaves. 00:20:54.29\00:20:56.39 And whenever you ate with somebody, you broke the bread 00:20:56.42\00:20:59.51 and you handed it to them. 00:20:59.54\00:21:00.72 Not every time it talks about breaking bread in the Bible 00:21:00.75\00:21:03.71 does it mean they had a special ceremonial communion service. 00:21:03.74\00:21:08.38 Furthermore, according to the Bible, when do 00:21:08.78\00:21:13.30 days begin and end? 00:21:13.33\00:21:16.46 Twelve o'clock midnight. 00:21:19.37\00:21:20.97 No, Pastor Barney, that didn't start until we had 00:21:23.92\00:21:26.14 modern time pieces. 00:21:26.17\00:21:27.93 According to the Bible, days begin and end at sundown. 00:21:29.23\00:21:34.16 "From even unto even you will celebrate your Sabbaths." 00:21:34.19\00:21:37.37 And the Jews still practice that today. 00:21:37.40\00:21:38.91 It's at sundown. 00:21:38.94\00:21:40.61 Now if it says they gathered together for a meeting at night 00:21:40.64\00:21:44.65 on the first day of the week, I'm still looking at 00:21:44.68\00:21:46.94 Acts chapter 20 verse 7, meeting at night 00:21:46.97\00:21:49.68 on the first day of the week. 00:21:49.69\00:21:50.69 When would the first day of the week begin biblically? 00:21:50.72\00:21:53.14 What we would call Saturday night. 00:21:53.90\00:21:55.89 Here they had been together all day Sabbath, the sun goes down, 00:21:55.90\00:22:00.10 they have a vespers. 00:22:00.13\00:22:01.40 Paul preaches to them his farewell sermon because the 00:22:01.43\00:22:04.73 next day, what we would call Sunday morning, it says, 00:22:04.76\00:22:07.43 "ready to depart on the morrow," he begins a long journey 00:22:07.46\00:22:11.45 making his way to Jerusalem. 00:22:11.48\00:22:12.93 Something no Jew would ever do on the Sabbath day. 00:22:12.96\00:22:16.94 Actually, this verse endorses that they were still keeping 00:22:16.97\00:22:20.70 the seventh day Sabbath. 00:22:20.71\00:22:22.04 It doesn't say they instituted a new day or that they were 00:22:22.07\00:22:24.46 having a communion service. 00:22:24.49\00:22:25.71 I just need to tell you, if we're biblically honest, 00:22:25.74\00:22:27.91 that's a stretch. 00:22:27.94\00:22:29.20 Alright Pastor Doug, I've got another verse here. 00:22:29.70\00:22:31.95 That's not the only one. 00:22:31.98\00:22:33.20 1 Corinthians chapter 16 verses 1 and 2. 00:22:34.05\00:22:39.24 They're having an offering. 00:22:43.35\00:22:44.81 Alright, so I showed you a communion serve on the 00:22:51.45\00:22:53.52 first day of the week. 00:22:53.53\00:22:54.53 Now there's an offering on the first day of the week. 00:22:54.54\00:22:56.45 The first day was the new Sabbath for the disciples. 00:22:56.46\00:22:59.10 I'll finish the verse, though. 00:22:59.92\00:23:01.31 "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you 00:23:01.34\00:23:03.82 lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, 00:23:03.85\00:23:06.89 that there be no gatherings when I come." 00:23:06.92\00:23:08.72 Pastor Barney, you notice that it said there in that verse, 00:23:12.25\00:23:15.22 he was collecting a special offering that they were to 00:23:15.25\00:23:18.65 "lay by them in store." 00:23:18.68\00:23:21.46 The first of the week, the word "day" actually is 00:23:21.86\00:23:24.10 not even in the original. 00:23:24.11\00:23:25.12 If you've got a Bible version that has the added word 00:23:25.13\00:23:28.85 italicized, you'll notice it simply says, 00:23:28.88\00:23:31.10 "the first of the week," or "at the beginning of the week, 00:23:31.13\00:23:34.18 let everyone of you lay by him..." 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.45 "By him," means at your home. 00:23:36.48\00:23:39.20 "In store..." you don't store your stuff at church. 00:23:39.23\00:23:42.73 "...store an offering, set something aside, 00:23:42.76\00:23:45.68 so that when I come, as I visit you I can collect it, 00:23:45.71\00:23:50.30 so there is no special collection during the service 00:23:50.33\00:23:53.64 for Jerusalem that would be for their local needs 00:23:53.67\00:23:56.26 when I come through." 00:23:56.29\00:23:57.48 He's actually saying, "The first of the week after you've 00:23:57.51\00:24:00.66 gathered for Sabbath and you've paid your tithe and your 00:24:00.67\00:24:02.92 offering, and you get your accounts in order, 00:24:02.95\00:24:04.77 if you can set aside something special for the famine in 00:24:04.80\00:24:08.29 Jerusalem, set it aside at your home." 00:24:08.30\00:24:11.23 It has nothing to do with them meeting in a church. 00:24:11.26\00:24:13.72 Nothing in this verse says that this was a church meeting. 00:24:13.75\00:24:16.82 It's actually saying the opposite. 00:24:16.85\00:24:18.78 Matter of fact, I'd like to ask you, where in the Bible 00:24:18.81\00:24:21.66 do we have a command to keep the first day holy as a Sabbath? 00:24:21.67\00:24:26.01 Well, we've got a long standing tradition 00:24:29.09\00:24:31.18 of what the church has been doing. 00:24:31.28\00:24:32.55 But I've been studying the Bible and I think I found one for you. 00:24:32.58\00:24:36.05 Nehemiah chapter 8 verse 18. 00:24:36.99\00:24:41.94 It says, "They kept the feast seven days; and on the 00:24:43.49\00:24:45.97 eighth day there was a sacred assembly." 00:24:46.00\00:24:48.57 Now you believe that the seventh day is the Sabbath, right? 00:24:49.92\00:24:52.78 The seventh day of the week, yes. 00:24:53.98\00:24:55.75 Well here it says the eighth day they had a sacred assembly. 00:24:56.45\00:24:59.67 That would be the eighth day sequentially from 00:25:01.35\00:25:03.97 when this feast began. 00:25:04.00\00:25:05.53 There is no eighth day of the week. 00:25:05.56\00:25:07.55 Well, but you said that the seventh day is the Sabbath. 00:25:09.46\00:25:12.13 So what's the day after the seventh day? 00:25:12.16\00:25:14.50 Well that's the first day. It's not the eighth day. 00:25:15.50\00:25:17.75 Now I've heard this before. 00:25:20.61\00:25:22.04 Nice try. 00:25:25.30\00:25:26.38 That was an annual feast. 00:25:27.10\00:25:28.97 It fell on different days of the week every year. 00:25:29.00\00:25:31.97 It wasn't telling us that is was the new Sabbath. 00:25:32.00\00:25:34.57 By the way, that's in the book of Nehemiah. 00:25:34.97\00:25:37.04 That's pretty deep in the Old Testament. 00:25:37.05\00:25:38.95 They still continued to keep the Sabbath. 00:25:38.98\00:25:41.27 And if you read later in the book of Nehemiah, 00:25:41.30\00:25:43.41 he gets real upset when they start breaking the Sabbath. 00:25:43.44\00:25:46.18 He tells them to lock the gates because they were 00:25:46.19\00:25:47.99 going out buying and selling. 00:25:48.02\00:25:49.66 Now Pastor Doug, actually there was another story in the Bible. 00:25:53.03\00:25:57.78 Do you know about the battle where Joshua prayed 00:25:57.81\00:26:00.50 and the sun stood still? 00:26:00.53\00:26:02.07 Yes, I'm acquainted with that. 00:26:03.28\00:26:05.18 The sun stood still for almost 24 hours. 00:26:06.19\00:26:09.44 That's right. 00:26:10.39\00:26:11.61 Just probably shy of that. 00:26:11.64\00:26:13.58 Extra 15 minutes from the book of Hezekiah. 00:26:13.68\00:26:16.36 I agree precisely. 00:26:17.41\00:26:19.18 If you add that 23 and 3/4 hours of Joshua with the 00:26:19.21\00:26:24.84 15 minutes of Hezekiah, you get a 24 hour period. 00:26:24.87\00:26:28.73 Saturday turned into Sunday during those two miracles. 00:26:28.76\00:26:31.86 Now friends, this is one of the reasons I became 00:26:34.70\00:26:36.69 a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:26:36.72\00:26:37.94 Is because when I had questions and I went to different pastors, 00:26:38.34\00:26:41.88 that Pastor Barney represents, no two pastors gave me exactly 00:26:41.91\00:26:47.16 the same reason why we're not suppose to keep 00:26:47.19\00:26:49.76 that commandment. 00:26:49.79\00:26:51.10 Pastor Barney, do you believe that we're suppose to 00:26:53.16\00:26:54.81 keep the Ten Commandments? 00:26:54.84\00:26:56.26 No, we're not under the law. 00:26:57.95\00:26:59.45 Do you think it's okay for us to break the Ten Commandments? 00:27:01.36\00:27:04.73 Well no, we're suppose to keep nine of them. 00:27:08.06\00:27:11.11 So there's one commandment that begins with the word "remember", 00:27:12.60\00:27:16.67 and you're telling me that's the one commandment 00:27:16.70\00:27:18.67 we're suppose to forget. 00:27:18.70\00:27:20.28 Yes. 00:27:22.57\00:27:23.82 That's exactly what you're going to hear when you go out there. 00:27:26.09\00:27:29.07 Friends, I am not kidding you. 00:27:29.82\00:27:31.42 I've done meetings where I've preached the gospel on this 00:27:31.45\00:27:34.09 subject in towns and pastors have come from the 00:27:34.12\00:27:36.58 local Sunday congregations; good people. 00:27:36.61\00:27:39.64 And after they heard the Sabbath truth... 00:27:40.05\00:27:42.42 I know one pastor in particular, he went back to his church. 00:27:42.82\00:27:45.67 They had the Ten Commandments up on the wall in their 00:27:45.70\00:27:47.73 Sunday school classes. 00:27:47.76\00:27:48.79 He took them all down. 00:27:48.82\00:27:50.61 Because they realize that if they're going to keep the 00:27:51.02\00:27:53.56 Ten Commandments in there, they've got to deal with 00:27:53.59\00:27:56.68 the one that says, "remember". 00:27:56.71\00:27:57.88 It's in the middle of God's law, it begins with the word "holy". 00:27:57.91\00:28:01.27 The only commandment, the only time you find the word "holy" 00:28:01.30\00:28:04.25 in the law of God is in the Sabbath commandment. 00:28:04.28\00:28:06.87 It's the longest of the Ten Commandments. 00:28:07.54\00:28:09.71 And it's the one the devil especially hates, 00:28:10.35\00:28:12.63 because life is made of time. 00:28:13.29\00:28:16.00 And God wants our hearts. 00:28:17.08\00:28:18.99 And the way that you show your love is by giving time. 00:28:19.02\00:28:22.35 And God wants holy time with us every week. 00:28:22.75\00:28:25.75 And I might ask you that, Pastor Barney. 00:28:25.95\00:28:27.76 Do you think that it's important that we gather together 00:28:27.79\00:28:30.62 to worship the Lord on a regular basis? 00:28:30.72\00:28:34.60 Yes, Pastor Doug, I think that we should worship 00:28:35.35\00:28:38.24 the Lord every week. 00:28:38.25\00:28:40.00 And you worship the Lord one day a week. 00:28:40.03\00:28:43.56 I worship the Lord seven days a week. 00:28:43.57\00:28:45.71 Pastor Barney, I worship God seven days a week too. 00:28:48.21\00:28:50.99 I have prayer and I worship Him all through the day, 00:28:51.02\00:28:54.69 just like you. 00:28:54.70\00:28:55.70 But we're not talking about worshipping the Lord. 00:28:55.71\00:28:58.13 We're really talking about a formal collective worship 00:28:58.16\00:29:00.56 service that we keep as a holy day. 00:29:00.57\00:29:02.73 If you are keeping seven days a week as a Sabbath, 00:29:02.76\00:29:05.52 you're not holy, you're really lazy. 00:29:05.55\00:29:07.57 Because it means you're not working. 00:29:07.60\00:29:09.15 Because the rest of that commandment says, 00:29:09.18\00:29:10.53 "six days shalt thou labor." 00:29:10.56\00:29:12.79 And if you go through your whole week saying, 00:29:12.82\00:29:13.99 "I'm not working today, I'm worshipping," 00:29:14.00\00:29:15.90 that's not holy, that's lazy. 00:29:15.93\00:29:18.59 Alright, let's carry on here. 00:29:19.49\00:29:21.32 Alright, I'll assume my position here. 00:29:24.37\00:29:26.47 Number four. 00:29:26.48\00:29:27.86 How many of us have all heard Sunday referred to 00:29:31.57\00:29:33.96 as the Lord's Day? 00:29:33.97\00:29:35.37 I'm glad you're giving me a little bit of time here. 00:29:39.16\00:29:41.88 Not been very fair so far. 00:29:41.91\00:29:44.03 Revelation 1:10, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day." 00:29:44.06\00:29:48.15 Here you've got the last book of the Bible. 00:29:48.18\00:29:50.21 You've got the oldest and longest living of the apostles, 00:29:50.24\00:29:53.14 and he is recognizing that he was worshipping God 00:29:53.17\00:29:56.53 here on the Lord's Day; that everybody knows is Sunday. 00:29:56.56\00:30:00.84 Everywhere you go, churches everywhere refer to Sunday 00:30:00.87\00:30:04.95 as the Lord's Day. 00:30:04.96\00:30:05.96 And John the apostle says he was in the Spirit. 00:30:05.97\00:30:08.25 He had the vision of Revelation on the Lord's Day. 00:30:08.28\00:30:11.01 Now I recognize that what you said, Pastor Barney, is true. 00:30:12.53\00:30:15.51 John does say that. 00:30:15.54\00:30:17.19 And churches everywhere say that the first day of the 00:30:17.22\00:30:19.51 week is the Lord's Day. 00:30:19.54\00:30:20.72 But what I need is scripture. 00:30:20.75\00:30:22.79 And I'm not even going to go over there because 00:30:23.23\00:30:24.60 you know and I know that there isn't any scripture on that. 00:30:24.63\00:30:27.17 What does the Bible say is the Lord's Day? 00:30:28.12\00:30:30.64 If you look in Isaiah 58:13, and these are only two of many. 00:30:32.06\00:30:35.90 Pasto Barney, He didn't call it the Jews holy Day. 00:30:44.39\00:30:48.63 He said, "My holy Day." 00:30:48.66\00:30:50.62 And again, Exodus 20, in the commandment itself. 00:30:51.79\00:30:54.64 "The Sabbath of the Lord thy God." 00:31:07.24\00:31:09.77 So in Revelation 1:10, were John says, "I was in the Spirit 00:31:09.80\00:31:15.73 on the Lord's Day," it may mean one of two things. 00:31:15.76\00:31:19.11 And I'll be fine with either one. 00:31:19.14\00:31:20.78 John, obviously, was still keeping the Sabbath. 00:31:21.18\00:31:24.34 He wasn't going to be working in the mines of Patmos. 00:31:24.74\00:31:27.89 He was probably worshipping the Lord that day. 00:31:27.92\00:31:30.61 He may have had the vision of Revelation on the Sabbath day. 00:31:30.64\00:31:34.41 And another interpretation I've heard is, when he said, 00:31:34.91\00:31:37.94 "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day," 00:31:37.95\00:31:39.33 he means the day that Jesus appeared to him and 00:31:39.36\00:31:42.57 showed the second coming. 00:31:42.60\00:31:44.25 That is sometimes called, "the Day of the Lord," 00:31:44.28\00:31:46.05 the second coming. 00:31:46.08\00:31:47.11 And so, either way. 00:31:47.14\00:31:48.39 But it is not saying it was a new Sabbath day. 00:31:48.42\00:31:51.32 You know, I think most of us recognize that when God gave 00:31:51.82\00:31:54.81 the Ten Commandments, He did something 00:31:54.84\00:31:58.48 He's never done before. 00:31:58.51\00:32:00.29 God spoke audibly from a mountain. 00:32:00.75\00:32:03.50 He used a megaphone to talk to a nation. 00:32:03.53\00:32:07.08 Don't you always wonder what His voice must have sounded like. 00:32:07.09\00:32:09.66 Can you imagine hearing that? 00:32:11.07\00:32:12.52 The Creator of the cosmos speaking where people 00:32:12.82\00:32:15.72 can hear His voice. 00:32:15.75\00:32:17.04 And then He wrote it with His finger. 00:32:18.16\00:32:19.84 And then from that time all the way through the Bible, 00:32:20.80\00:32:25.32 we see God's people keeping the Sabbath commandment. 00:32:25.35\00:32:28.00 When you get to the New Testament, with all the 00:32:28.03\00:32:31.17 arguments and discussions they had about certain 00:32:31.20\00:32:33.69 ceremonial laws, if God was going to change one of His 00:32:33.72\00:32:37.23 commandments that He spoke with His voice, 00:32:37.26\00:32:39.32 wouldn't you see a lot of evidence for that 00:32:40.01\00:32:42.46 in the New Testament? 00:32:42.49\00:32:43.60 I mean, can you imagine, friends... 00:32:43.63\00:32:45.37 I mean, here we're in California. 00:32:46.63\00:32:48.46 We've got our own traffic issues. 00:32:48.47\00:32:50.57 If I were to tell you that the government has voted, next week 00:32:50.60\00:32:54.09 they're changing the speed limit to 90 miles an hour, 00:32:54.12\00:32:57.83 would any of you believe me? 00:32:57.86\00:32:59.93 No, especially with the energy problems right now. 00:33:00.74\00:33:03.15 And then if I added to that, they're not only going to be 00:33:03.62\00:33:06.70 going 90 miles an hour, but we've decided because we're 00:33:06.71\00:33:09.73 so close an ally with England, we're going to switch sides 00:33:09.74\00:33:12.73 of the road, like they do in Hong Kong and India, and 00:33:12.76\00:33:15.87 all the British Commonwealths in Australia, we're going to 00:33:15.88\00:33:18.40 actually start driving on the other side of the road. 00:33:18.43\00:33:20.94 Would you believe that the government would slip something 00:33:22.32\00:33:25.16 like that through without your knowing it? 00:33:25.19\00:33:27.32 So what is the likelihood in the culture of the New Testament 00:33:28.16\00:33:32.92 for God to change the commandment regarding His 00:33:32.95\00:33:35.94 blessed day of worship and there to be a deafening silence 00:33:35.97\00:33:39.97 all through the New Testament. 00:33:40.00\00:33:41.43 I mean, there was great debate about all kinds of things like 00:33:41.46\00:33:44.05 circumcision and sacrifices and Jewish feast days, 00:33:44.08\00:33:47.06 and all kinds of stuff they argued and debated, 00:33:47.09\00:33:49.26 whether or not you should or shouldn't eat things 00:33:49.29\00:33:51.12 sacrifice to idols, and all kinds of issues. 00:33:51.15\00:33:54.68 But you never hear Paul, Peter, James, John, 00:33:55.21\00:33:58.17 anybody say, "Now the first day is the new Sabbath day." 00:33:58.20\00:34:02.99 Shouldn't it have some kind of credibility, like when 00:34:03.02\00:34:06.59 He gave it to begin with, if you're going to change the 00:34:06.60\00:34:09.73 one commandment that He says remember? 00:34:09.76\00:34:11.77 Alright, you can tell which side of the issue I'm on. 00:34:12.73\00:34:15.54 I don't believe that the Lord's Day is on... 00:34:17.01\00:34:21.22 Let me see where I'm at here. 00:34:23.05\00:34:24.29 Alright, number five. 00:34:24.69\00:34:26.49 I'm glad you shared that point because I was going to 00:34:33.83\00:34:35.49 say that myself. 00:34:35.50\00:34:36.91 One reason that we still believe in the other nine commandments 00:34:36.94\00:34:40.18 and we don't believe in the Sabbath commandment, 00:34:40.21\00:34:42.35 Pastor Doug, is because you don't find anywhere in the 00:34:42.38\00:34:45.59 New Testament where the Sabbath is repeated. 00:34:45.60\00:34:48.76 But you do find all the other nine commandments repeated. 00:34:48.79\00:34:52.08 Pastor Barney, you know better. 00:34:55.29\00:34:59.14 And I might even ask our audience here, have you ever 00:35:00.21\00:35:02.47 heard that before someone say that? 00:35:02.50\00:35:04.53 I see some hands out there. 00:35:04.54\00:35:06.93 You've heard of urban myths? 00:35:07.74\00:35:09.69 That is a biblical myth. 00:35:10.06\00:35:11.43 And sometimes we learn that when you say a myth often enough, 00:35:11.46\00:35:14.95 people believe it's true without every investigating. 00:35:14.98\00:35:17.90 Years ago, I think Aristotle said, "The spider is an 00:35:17.93\00:35:20.62 insect with six legs." 00:35:20.65\00:35:22.42 And they wrote that and repeated it through history until 00:35:22.45\00:35:24.89 someone finally got down and looked and said, 00:35:24.92\00:35:27.15 "No, he's got eight legs." 00:35:27.18\00:35:28.60 People just have a tendency to repeat things that are not true. 00:35:29.50\00:35:32.97 Actually, there is one of the Ten Commandments that you 00:35:33.43\00:35:36.36 do not find repeated in the New Testament. 00:35:36.39\00:35:39.94 Pastor Barney, can you tell us what that commandment is? 00:35:40.67\00:35:43.30 It's the Sabbath commandment. 00:35:45.10\00:35:46.53 Actually, I can show you several places in the New Testament 00:35:49.20\00:35:51.72 where you still find the Sabbath repeated. 00:35:51.75\00:35:54.01 First of all, you can look in Hebrews chapter 4 verse 4. 00:35:55.25\00:35:58.91 It says: 00:35:58.94\00:36:00.01 You can look at Hebrews chapter 4 verse 9. 00:36:07.27\00:36:09.95 That word "rest" there is "sabbatismos." 00:36:13.23\00:36:16.07 And that means, a keeping of the Sabbath; it remains. 00:36:16.10\00:36:19.17 That's written by Paul in the New Testament. 00:36:19.20\00:36:21.01 Not to mention, you can go through a number of places 00:36:21.04\00:36:23.98 in Acts where it talks about them keeping the Sabbath. 00:36:24.01\00:36:26.62 Acts 16 verse 13, written again by a Gentile. 00:36:26.65\00:36:30.16 Showing that they kept it. 00:36:40.13\00:36:41.70 But there is one commandment of the ten you don't find 00:36:42.30\00:36:45.14 explicitly repeated in the New Testament. 00:36:45.17\00:36:47.29 And that's the commandment that says, "You shall not 00:36:47.67\00:36:50.15 take the name of the Lord your God in vain, 00:36:50.18\00:36:52.20 for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that 00:36:52.23\00:36:53.95 taketh His name in vain." 00:36:53.98\00:36:55.09 Pastor Barney, can you show me where in the New Testament 00:36:55.12\00:36:57.80 you're going to find that commandment? 00:36:57.83\00:36:59.66 How much time do we have? 00:37:01.50\00:37:02.86 The Bible does say, "Hallowed be Thy name." 00:37:04.63\00:37:07.45 I will agree with you that this is the same principle. 00:37:08.66\00:37:12.33 But you have to admit, that's really as close as you get. 00:37:12.36\00:37:16.02 Nowhere in the New Testament do you find the third commandment. 00:37:16.39\00:37:18.71 Who here believes that it's okay then to break the 00:37:19.14\00:37:21.81 third commandment because you don't find it explicitly 00:37:21.84\00:37:24.79 repeated as a carbon copy the way that you find it 00:37:24.82\00:37:28.93 in the Old Testament. 00:37:28.96\00:37:30.39 The principles were all there. 00:37:30.42\00:37:32.78 And Jesus made it very clear. 00:37:32.81\00:37:34.49 The last thing in the world they wanted to do was to 00:37:34.50\00:37:36.69 abolish the commandments of God. 00:37:36.72\00:37:39.00 Alright, well Pastor Doug, there's more. 00:37:39.93\00:37:42.95 Number six. 00:37:45.27\00:37:46.81 Alright, Pastor Barney. 00:37:53.65\00:37:54.92 Romans chapter 14 verses 5 and 6. 00:37:54.95\00:37:58.16 Well, some people esteem the Sabbath day, 00:38:05.50\00:38:07.98 others don't esteem the Sabbath day. 00:38:08.01\00:38:10.10 It says, let everybody just kind of do their own thing. 00:38:10.13\00:38:13.83 "He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord. 00:38:13.86\00:38:16.66 He who does not observe the day, to the Lord 00:38:16.69\00:38:18.60 he does not observe it. 00:38:18.61\00:38:19.75 He who eats, to the Lord he eats, and he gives God thanks. 00:38:19.78\00:38:22.88 And he who doesn't eat, to the Lord he does not eat, 00:38:22.91\00:38:25.43 and he gives God thanks." 00:38:25.44\00:38:26.46 Pastor Doug, in other words, don't be judging other people 00:38:26.49\00:38:29.82 regarding what day they keep as a Sabbath day. 00:38:29.85\00:38:32.61 Let everybody decide. 00:38:32.64\00:38:34.45 You know the problem I've got with this, Pastor Barney, 00:38:35.65\00:38:37.44 I've heard a lot of pastors say that to me. 00:38:37.47\00:38:39.05 But then when I ask them, are you willing to tell your 00:38:39.08\00:38:42.03 congregation, "You decide to come to church 00:38:42.06\00:38:45.06 whatever day you feel like." 00:38:45.09\00:38:46.75 Have you ever used that verse in your congregation that way? 00:38:46.78\00:38:50.49 No. 00:38:53.40\00:38:54.72 The fact is, if truth be known, you have a hard enough time 00:38:57.11\00:38:59.98 getting them to keep Sunday as the Sabbath. 00:39:00.01\00:39:03.02 Pastor Barney, do you keep Sunday as the Sabbath? 00:39:05.41\00:39:08.65 Do you keep it as a holy day? 00:39:08.68\00:39:10.36 Well, I do go to church. 00:39:12.87\00:39:15.80 And then if the lawn needs mowing, I mow the lawn. 00:39:15.83\00:39:18.79 And the wife might need to do some shopping. 00:39:18.80\00:39:21.01 And might need a little entertainment with the family 00:39:21.02\00:39:23.50 and we'll go to the movies. 00:39:23.51\00:39:24.55 But we do keep it holy while we're in church 00:39:24.56\00:39:27.82 on Sunday morning. 00:39:27.85\00:39:28.89 Well according to the Bible the Sabbath is a day, 00:39:30.63\00:39:33.28 it's not a two hour period. 00:39:33.31\00:39:35.06 And yet not too many people are keeping that whole day holy 00:39:36.36\00:39:39.55 on the first day of the week. 00:39:39.58\00:39:40.82 By the way, in Romans chapter 14, the word 00:39:40.85\00:39:43.68 "Sabbath" never appears. 00:39:43.71\00:39:45.49 He's talking about keeping the Jewish feast days. 00:39:45.52\00:39:48.55 There was a great debate on which feast days were kept. 00:39:48.58\00:39:51.68 Keep in mind, the Sabbath commandment goes 00:39:51.69\00:39:54.66 all the way back to Genesis. 00:39:54.69\00:39:57.02 The annual feast of the Jews, you find them during the 00:39:57.05\00:40:00.88 time of the exodus. 00:40:00.91\00:40:02.82 One happened before there was even sin in the universe. 00:40:02.85\00:40:06.77 Part of God's perfect law is the seventh day Sabbath. 00:40:06.78\00:40:10.12 The other Jewish annual Sabbath days, and this is what Paul 00:40:10.15\00:40:13.31 is talking about in Romans 14, they came after sin. 00:40:13.34\00:40:17.00 They were nailed to the cross. 00:40:17.03\00:40:18.72 Alright Pastor Doug, that brings me up to another verse 00:40:19.56\00:40:22.89 that I'd like to read. 00:40:22.92\00:40:24.10 Talking about nailed to the cross, Colossians 2, don't be 00:40:24.50\00:40:28.58 judging people, verses 14 to 16. 00:40:28.61\00:40:31.51 When Jesus came and He died on the cross, 00:40:31.81\00:40:34.38 He blotted out these Sabbath days. 00:40:34.78\00:40:37.15 Notice, "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances 00:40:37.18\00:40:40.41 that were against us, which was contrary to us, 00:40:40.42\00:40:43.94 and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross. 00:40:43.97\00:40:47.23 Having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a 00:40:47.26\00:40:50.35 show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 00:40:50.38\00:40:53.26 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in 00:40:53.29\00:40:57.91 respect of a holiday, or the new moon, or of the Sabbath days." 00:40:57.94\00:41:02.73 Let no one judge you regarding the Sabbath days. 00:41:02.76\00:41:05.63 Case closed. 00:41:05.66\00:41:06.81 That's it, I mean, how can you be more clear than that? 00:41:08.39\00:41:10.40 So if anyone tries to judge you; one man regards one day 00:41:10.43\00:41:13.69 above another, don't let anyone judge you 00:41:13.72\00:41:15.70 regarding the Sabbath days. 00:41:15.73\00:41:17.00 Have we all heard that before? 00:41:20.60\00:41:22.01 We need to rightly divide the word of truth if we're going to 00:41:22.79\00:41:25.59 get truth regarding biblical doctrines. 00:41:25.60\00:41:28.78 It is true. 00:41:29.18\00:41:30.45 It says that there were some laws that are 00:41:30.48\00:41:32.64 nailed to the cross. 00:41:32.67\00:41:33.88 We need to find out what they're talking about. 00:41:33.91\00:41:35.81 Now notice specifically what Paul said here. 00:41:36.31\00:41:39.84 I'm in Colossians 2:14, "Blotting out the handwriting." 00:41:39.87\00:41:45.96 The what? 00:41:45.97\00:41:47.06 "...handwriting of ordinances," 00:41:47.09\00:41:50.12 and then notice, "that was against us." 00:41:50.15\00:41:52.41 He's identifying what it is that is being blotted out. 00:41:52.42\00:41:55.16 What is the handwriting and the ordinances? 00:41:55.19\00:41:58.96 Look in Deuteronomy chapter 31:26. 00:41:58.97\00:42:02.87 Paul is referring back to this. 00:42:02.90\00:42:04.78 Now, let me see how many Bible scholars we have here 00:42:17.15\00:42:20.62 in our live audience. 00:42:20.65\00:42:22.08 The Ten Commandments; were they outside the ark 00:42:22.62\00:42:26.54 or were they in the ark of the covenant, the golden box? 00:42:26.57\00:42:28.99 They're in the golden box. 00:42:29.56\00:42:31.27 The ordinances and the laws of Moses, 00:42:31.30\00:42:34.56 they were in a book written on paper. 00:42:35.87\00:42:38.48 That was put outside the ark. 00:42:38.51\00:42:40.22 Never does it say that is inside the ark. 00:42:40.25\00:42:42.33 The Ten Commandments inside the ark, 00:42:42.74\00:42:44.50 ordinances in a pocket outside the ark. 00:42:44.53\00:42:47.26 Why? That it might be a witness against you. 00:42:47.29\00:42:50.38 Paul is referring to the book of ordinances that was a 00:42:50.41\00:42:53.69 witness against them. 00:42:53.70\00:42:55.27 Notice there's a distinction between the laws. 00:42:55.30\00:42:58.31 2 Chronicles chapter 33 verse 8. 00:42:58.34\00:43:01.19 Handwriting that is against you. 00:43:21.70\00:43:23.86 Those are the ordinances. 00:43:24.26\00:43:26.02 This is what is nailed to the cross. 00:43:26.05\00:43:28.04 And of course, Exodus 32:16. 00:43:28.07\00:43:30.36 It's telling us in Colossians chapter 2 that, don't let 00:43:37.43\00:43:40.38 anyone judge you regarding the ordinances. 00:43:40.41\00:43:43.23 That includes the Jewish annual Sabbath days; 00:43:43.24\00:43:47.19 things like Passover, Day of Atonement, 00:43:47.22\00:43:50.14 the feast days, Yom Kippur; those things came after sin. 00:43:50.15\00:43:54.51 When Jesus died on the cross, the veil and the curtain 00:43:54.54\00:43:57.90 was ripped, the ceremonial system was abolished. 00:43:57.93\00:44:01.82 Those things were all nailed to the cross. 00:44:01.85\00:44:04.11 The Ten Commandments are for mankind through all ages. 00:44:04.14\00:44:07.98 This is the moral code of man. 00:44:07.99\00:44:10.01 The first four commandments talk about our love for God 00:44:10.48\00:44:13.03 and our relationship with Him and our worshipping Him. 00:44:13.06\00:44:16.09 The last six commandments are dealing more with the 00:44:16.12\00:44:19.24 horizontal social relationships of men. 00:44:19.25\00:44:22.02 But, no, the Sabbath day was not nailed to the cross. 00:44:22.05\00:44:25.76 And don't we still need a day to worship God? 00:44:26.18\00:44:29.94 Is the Jewish anatomy different from the anatomy of other people 00:44:31.22\00:44:34.88 where they just needed more rest on a more regular basis? 00:44:34.91\00:44:38.28 Number seven. 00:44:41.72\00:44:42.87 So sequentially, Pastor Doug, I don't have a problem, 00:44:49.83\00:44:53.99 and I've heard a lot of my fellow pastors say this, 00:44:54.02\00:44:58.03 we don't have a problem with our Seventh-day Adventist friends 00:44:58.06\00:45:00.99 deciding that they want to worship God on Saturday. 00:45:01.02\00:45:03.41 Matter of fact, we've got a lot of our Sunday churches 00:45:03.44\00:45:05.68 to accommodate people's works schedules. 00:45:05.71\00:45:07.44 We're beginning to meet on Saturday and Sunday 00:45:07.47\00:45:10.12 trying to help everybody out. 00:45:10.15\00:45:11.68 Just don't judge anybody. 00:45:11.98\00:45:13.46 It doesn't matter as long as it's one in seven. 00:45:13.49\00:45:15.83 But Pastor Barney... 00:45:18.68\00:45:20.58 I just enjoy saying that, "Pastor Barney." 00:45:21.39\00:45:23.96 When God gives the Sabbath day in the very beginning there in 00:45:26.55\00:45:30.21 Genesis chapter 2:2-3, it says three times, 00:45:30.24\00:45:34.96 "the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord." 00:45:34.99\00:45:39.07 It is the most definite article. 00:45:39.10\00:45:41.23 He doesn't say, "a Sabbath day," as though we can 00:45:41.26\00:45:44.52 all pick our own. 00:45:44.55\00:45:45.72 And what would happen to the church if every individual 00:45:45.75\00:45:48.04 decides what is going to be the day for their corporate worship? 00:45:48.07\00:45:52.29 God wants us to have a day where we let Him pick. 00:45:52.90\00:45:56.20 He tells us. 00:45:56.21\00:45:57.55 We don't call the appointment, He calls the appointment, 00:45:57.58\00:46:01.01 because He is God. 00:46:01.04\00:46:02.30 Not only that, He did something to the seventh day that 00:46:02.31\00:46:06.11 we can't do. 00:46:06.14\00:46:07.72 He says, "I have blessed the seventh day, 00:46:07.75\00:46:10.53 I have sanctified that day, I have made that day holy." 00:46:10.56\00:46:14.05 So does every person have the power to bless a 24 hour period 00:46:14.08\00:46:18.64 and make it holy? 00:46:18.67\00:46:20.04 Only God can make something holy. 00:46:20.07\00:46:22.03 And the Bible tells us what God does, He does forever. 00:46:22.06\00:46:25.76 Number eight. 00:46:27.26\00:46:28.31 It's been so long since Bible times. 00:46:32.06\00:46:33.51 Pastor Doug, I'm surprised that our Seventh-day Adventist 00:46:37.03\00:46:40.46 brothers and sisters are so legalistic about this day 00:46:40.49\00:46:43.87 when none of us actually really knows about 00:46:43.90\00:46:47.48 what day is the seventh day. 00:46:47.51\00:46:48.74 The calendar has been changed. 00:46:48.77\00:46:50.11 And how would you possible keep the Sabbath if you 00:46:50.14\00:46:52.73 were on the international space station 00:46:52.76\00:46:55.11 where the days are all mixed up and you're just 00:46:55.50\00:46:57.39 circling out there in space? 00:46:57.42\00:46:59.17 Well I'd love to be on the international space station. 00:47:00.89\00:47:03.01 I really hope that happens some day. 00:47:03.04\00:47:04.67 And I'll probably keep the Sabbath then according to 00:47:04.70\00:47:07.73 Sacramento time if that should every happen. 00:47:07.76\00:47:10.22 But when God gave Adam and Eve the Sabbath, 00:47:10.25\00:47:12.28 they weren't on the space station. 00:47:12.31\00:47:13.96 And if we've got problems keeping the Sabbath day 00:47:13.97\00:47:17.76 because you think there's a calendar problem, 00:47:17.79\00:47:20.00 how do you know what day Sunday is? 00:47:20.03\00:47:21.64 You say you keep Sunday in honor of the resurrection. 00:47:21.67\00:47:24.03 If we've got a problem with which day is the seventh day, 00:47:24.06\00:47:26.23 you've got a problem with which day is the first day. 00:47:26.26\00:47:28.28 That was a low blow. 00:47:32.32\00:47:33.90 But we do know from the Bible which day is which. 00:47:37.48\00:47:40.64 You can look here in Luke chapter 23 verse 54. 00:47:42.29\00:47:46.16 Speaking of the day that Jesus died, it says, 00:47:48.24\00:47:51.13 "That day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew near." 00:47:51.16\00:47:55.02 So what day is before the seventh day? 00:47:55.03\00:47:57.66 The sixth day, right? 00:47:57.69\00:47:59.38 That's what we call Friday. 00:48:00.33\00:48:01.67 That's what they called the preparation day. 00:48:01.70\00:48:03.65 Then you read in Luke 23 verse 56, "Then they returned 00:48:03.68\00:48:07.93 and prepared spices and fragrant oils, and they rested 00:48:07.94\00:48:11.18 on the Sabbath..." 00:48:11.19\00:48:12.56 Luke doesn't say, "the old Jewish Sabbath." 00:48:12.99\00:48:14.55 He says, "the Sabbath." 00:48:14.56\00:48:15.85 "...according to the commandment." 00:48:15.88\00:48:18.19 And then it tells us in Luke 24 verse 1, 00:48:18.83\00:48:21.18 "Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, 00:48:22.02\00:48:24.83 they and certain other women with them came to the tomb." 00:48:24.86\00:48:27.75 That's what you'd call, Easter Sunday. 00:48:27.78\00:48:30.24 And so sandwiched between what we would call Good Friday, 00:48:30.54\00:48:34.52 or people call it Good Friday, the day that Jesus died, 00:48:34.55\00:48:37.00 and the day that Jesus rose, you've got the Sabbath day. 00:48:37.01\00:48:41.50 And you know what I think is very interesting is, 00:48:41.53\00:48:44.88 Christ validated the seventh day of the week with His death. 00:48:44.89\00:48:48.96 He didn't validate Sunday. 00:48:48.99\00:48:51.36 He dies on the cross, He says, "It is finished." 00:48:51.39\00:48:55.28 His testament is sealed. 00:48:55.31\00:48:57.40 And what does He do? 00:48:57.70\00:48:58.99 He rests in the tomb through the entire Sabbath. 00:48:59.48\00:49:04.46 He rises Sunday to continue His work for us as our High Priest 00:49:04.86\00:49:11.67 and our Intercessor who ever lives to make 00:49:11.70\00:49:14.01 intercession for us. 00:49:14.04\00:49:15.44 Even in the timing of Jesus' death, He endorses 00:49:15.86\00:49:19.15 the Sabbath day. 00:49:19.16\00:49:20.16 He doesn't establish another day. 00:49:20.19\00:49:22.11 So I think that's pretty clear. 00:49:23.68\00:49:26.81 I'm pacing myself looking at the clock here. 00:49:29.27\00:49:31.43 Pastor Doug, do you believe that all of the Christians 00:49:32.57\00:49:37.37 who do not observe the seventh day are lost? 00:49:37.40\00:49:41.38 I go first this time. 00:49:44.07\00:49:45.26 No. 00:49:46.66\00:49:47.78 There are a lot of people, millions, that will be in heaven 00:49:48.52\00:49:52.83 that worship God on the first day of the week. 00:49:52.86\00:49:56.54 There will be people in heaven that maybe didn't even 00:49:56.94\00:49:58.97 know what some of the commandments were 00:49:59.00\00:50:02.11 or understand them. 00:50:02.14\00:50:03.48 God judges people based on the light that they're given. 00:50:03.51\00:50:07.04 John 9 verse 41. 00:50:07.70\00:50:09.76 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; 00:50:09.79\00:50:14.74 but now you say, 'We see.' 00:50:14.77\00:50:16.40 Therefore your sin remains." 00:50:16.43\00:50:18.92 "To whom much is given, much is required." 00:50:18.95\00:50:21.85 And so, there are going to be people who broke the Sabbath 00:50:21.88\00:50:25.35 that will be lost because of that commandment. 00:50:25.38\00:50:27.39 There will be people who are lost because of 00:50:27.42\00:50:29.45 all of the commandments. 00:50:29.48\00:50:31.00 The idea of sin is, when you know to do good 00:50:31.58\00:50:34.37 and you do not do it. 00:50:34.38\00:50:35.38 The Bible says, "Sin is knowing to do good and not doing it." 00:50:35.39\00:50:38.85 When we know God's will. 00:50:38.86\00:50:40.16 And if someone understands the Sabbath truth 00:50:40.19\00:50:42.59 and they reject it in favor of being popular or fitting in, 00:50:42.62\00:50:46.36 well that's a serious issue, pastor. 00:50:46.39\00:50:48.53 But no, we know that... 00:50:48.93\00:50:50.13 And I said this in our opening presentation. 00:50:50.16\00:50:52.43 Seventh-day Adventists believe the greatest part of 00:50:52.73\00:50:56.36 Christ's true followers are still in the fellowship 00:50:56.39\00:51:00.60 of other communions. 00:51:00.63\00:51:02.36 But I believe we're getting very close to the end. 00:51:02.80\00:51:05.01 And I don't think we have time to just slap each other on the 00:51:05.70\00:51:08.33 back and act like doctrine doesn't matter. 00:51:08.36\00:51:10.38 I think God's people need to stand up and say, 00:51:10.39\00:51:12.60 "This is what the Bible says." 00:51:12.63\00:51:14.06 We love you, we want to be friends. 00:51:14.09\00:51:15.72 But we are given a message. 00:51:15.75\00:51:17.39 Even in the face of persecution. 00:51:17.42\00:51:19.08 Jesus said the Word of God is like a sword; 00:51:19.11\00:51:21.79 it's truth and it may divide. 00:51:21.80\00:51:23.34 But we've got to proclaim what the truth is. 00:51:23.37\00:51:25.79 And when it's a truth regarding one of God's commandments, 00:51:25.82\00:51:28.83 Jesus said, "Whosoever therefore shall break 00:51:28.86\00:51:31.77 one of the least of these commandments and 00:51:31.80\00:51:33.85 teach men so, he will be spoken of as least in the kingdom." 00:51:33.86\00:51:37.51 So I'm just doing what Jesus said to do. 00:51:37.54\00:51:39.76 "Whoever shall do and teach them," He said, our Lord said, 00:51:39.79\00:51:44.13 "will be great in the kingdom of heaven." 00:51:44.16\00:51:45.92 I believe the Lord wants us to preach this message. 00:51:46.32\00:51:49.52 And I hope, Pastor Barney, that you're coming around 00:51:50.22\00:51:52.65 to my reasoning. 00:51:52.68\00:51:55.01 You know, it says we're to reason together daily whether 00:51:55.04\00:51:57.48 these things are so. 00:51:57.51\00:51:58.65 Amen? 00:51:58.66\00:51:59.66 Study the Word of God together. 00:51:59.67\00:52:01.30 Alright, number ten. 00:52:03.28\00:52:04.68 Alright Pastor Doug, you know I want to follow Jesus. 00:52:10.14\00:52:12.83 But you read in John 5:18, "Therefore the Jews sought 00:52:12.84\00:52:16.84 all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke 00:52:16.87\00:52:19.96 the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, 00:52:19.99\00:52:23.91 making Himself equal with God." 00:52:23.94\00:52:25.53 So if Jesus breaks the Sabbath, then why are you giving us 00:52:25.56\00:52:28.25 a hard time about that? 00:52:28.28\00:52:29.78 Pastor, I think you know better. 00:52:31.51\00:52:32.93 You're talking about what His enemies said about Him. 00:52:33.09\00:52:35.90 If you're going to go by that, you've got to think about 00:52:35.93\00:52:38.27 everything they say. 00:52:38.30\00:52:39.58 Luke 4:16, "He came to Nazareth where He was brought up..." 00:52:39.61\00:52:43.25 Oh, I don't want to read that one yet. 00:52:44.12\00:52:45.32 I want to go to John 8:48. 00:52:45.35\00:52:48.20 "Then the Jews answered and said to Him, 00:52:49.08\00:52:51.27 'Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan 00:52:51.30\00:52:54.09 and You have a demon?' 00:52:54.12\00:52:55.57 And Jesus said, 'I don't have a demon.'" 00:52:55.60\00:52:57.61 Matthew 11:18, Jesus said, "John the Baptist came neither eating 00:52:57.64\00:53:02.43 nor drinking, and yet they say, 'He has a demon.' 00:53:02.44\00:53:04.99 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 00:53:05.02\00:53:08.39 'Look, He is a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of 00:53:08.42\00:53:11.80 tax collectors and sinners!'" 00:53:11.83\00:53:13.48 These were the accusations of His enemies. 00:53:13.51\00:53:17.04 It is true, they accused Jesus of breaking their traditions 00:53:17.07\00:53:21.49 regarding the Sabbath. 00:53:21.52\00:53:22.54 And He said, "You're adding manmade traditions to the 00:53:22.57\00:53:25.35 commandments of God." 00:53:25.38\00:53:26.44 Yes, He did break their manmade traditions. 00:53:26.45\00:53:28.54 But they weren't part of the Sabbath commandment. 00:53:28.55\00:53:30.96 Jesus said, "I have kept My Father's commandments 00:53:30.97\00:53:34.37 and abide in His love." 00:53:34.40\00:53:35.62 If you're suggesting that Jesus sinned, 00:53:35.65\00:53:37.66 we're all in big trouble. 00:53:37.69\00:53:39.02 And then of course finally, 00:53:40.24\00:53:41.97 a Christian is a follower of Jesus. 00:53:42.95\00:53:44.97 Isn't that right? 00:53:45.00\00:53:46.11 What was Jesus' example? 00:53:46.59\00:53:48.60 Luke 4:16, and it says, "And He came to Nazareth, 00:53:49.39\00:53:53.35 where He had been brought up. 00:53:53.38\00:53:54.56 And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue 00:53:54.59\00:53:59.08 on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read." 00:53:59.11\00:54:02.11 Now, is a custom something you do once or twice? 00:54:02.64\00:54:05.55 Or is a custom a pattern of life? 00:54:05.58\00:54:07.93 It's a behavior that goes on. 00:54:08.23\00:54:09.88 Jesus' pattern was on a regular basis. 00:54:10.18\00:54:13.39 They were used to seeing Him there. 00:54:13.42\00:54:15.16 They would gather together in the synagogue. 00:54:15.19\00:54:19.27 The same word as church. It means, the gathering place. 00:54:19.30\00:54:21.78 He read the scriptures with them. 00:54:22.25\00:54:24.02 That was His custom. 00:54:24.05\00:54:25.26 That was the custom of the apostles. 00:54:25.29\00:54:27.95 Paul reasoned with both Jews and Greeks every week 00:54:27.96\00:54:31.63 on the Sabbath. 00:54:31.66\00:54:33.08 And so this is what you find back in the Garden of Eden. 00:54:33.11\00:54:36.75 God first makes the Sabbath for man, meaning mankind, 00:54:37.05\00:54:39.99 in the very beginning. 00:54:40.00\00:54:41.00 Adam and Eve worshipped God on this holy Day that God blessed. 00:54:41.01\00:54:44.40 It's a pattern of God's people all through the 00:54:44.43\00:54:46.56 exodus experience. 00:54:46.59\00:54:48.16 It tells us, it's the example of Jesus. 00:54:48.19\00:54:50.80 And whenever you're in doubt about what to do, 00:54:51.10\00:54:53.04 you follow Jesus and you're not going to have 00:54:53.07\00:54:55.07 any problems with that. 00:54:55.10\00:54:56.72 It's the example of the apostles. 00:54:57.42\00:54:59.58 We know that in the new heaven and the new earth, 00:54:59.61\00:55:01.78 it says that from one Sabbath to another all flesh... 00:55:01.79\00:55:05.59 That doesn't mean all Jewish flesh. 00:55:05.62\00:55:07.28 It's not all kosher flesh. 00:55:07.83\00:55:10.03 "All flesh" means Jew and Gentile will come together to 00:55:10.06\00:55:13.53 worship before the Lord. 00:55:13.56\00:55:14.83 And if we're all going to be one people when Jesus comes back, 00:55:14.86\00:55:17.75 then I think He wants us to start getting together now. 00:55:18.99\00:55:21.35 God's church is too divided. 00:55:21.37\00:55:23.10 We're all polarized. 00:55:23.37\00:55:24.71 And this is exactly what the devil wants. 00:55:24.74\00:55:26.93 Jesus said, "All men will know that you are My disciples 00:55:27.31\00:55:29.92 by your love for one another." 00:55:29.95\00:55:31.70 And I think that love needs to be based on loving the 00:55:33.24\00:55:35.61 Word of God, because Jesus is the Word. 00:55:35.64\00:55:38.97 "The Word became flesh." 00:55:39.00\00:55:41.01 And so we need to base that love on what is truth. 00:55:41.04\00:55:44.17 It's the truth that sets people free. 00:55:44.20\00:55:46.14 I think Christians need to stop being so apologetic and afraid. 00:55:46.40\00:55:49.92 "In the name of unity", we say, "let's put aside all 00:55:49.95\00:55:53.52 doctrinal differences." 00:55:53.55\00:55:55.13 I believe that this is a very important truth. 00:55:56.26\00:55:58.51 Do you have any final word for us, Pastor Barney? 00:55:59.31\00:56:01.36 Brother Doug, I just can't help but want to ask you, 00:56:03.01\00:56:06.38 Seventh-day Adventists are a minority 00:56:06.83\00:56:09.04 compared to the vast millions in the Christian church. 00:56:09.07\00:56:11.96 How can you guys think that you're right 00:56:12.54\00:56:14.63 and all of these other Christian pastors and scholars 00:56:14.66\00:56:17.86 could be wrong? 00:56:17.89\00:56:19.11 I know, Pastor Barney, that is troubling. 00:56:21.20\00:56:23.37 But you know, that's been the pattern of the Bible. 00:56:23.40\00:56:25.63 You can read in John chapter 7 verse 46, 00:56:26.99\00:56:29.52 they said the same thing about Jesus. 00:56:29.55\00:56:31.80 "The officers answered, 'No man ever spoke like this Man.'" 00:56:32.67\00:56:36.40 They sent them to arrest Jesus. 00:56:36.43\00:56:38.41 And they came back and they said, "We've never heard anyone 00:56:38.91\00:56:41.42 speak like this." 00:56:41.45\00:56:42.76 "Then the Pharisees sneered and said to them, 00:56:43.25\00:56:45.51 'Are you also deceived? 00:56:45.54\00:56:47.28 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?" 00:56:47.31\00:56:50.92 "Let's find out what the majority thinks and let's 00:56:50.95\00:56:54.55 follow the majority." 00:56:54.58\00:56:56.02 You know, that's what is going to get the world in trouble 00:56:56.58\00:56:58.39 in the last days. 00:56:58.42\00:56:59.72 That beast power is going to command all, small and great, 00:56:59.92\00:57:04.06 rich and poor, free and bond, to worship. 00:57:04.09\00:57:06.88 And those who have the seal of God that are following the 00:57:07.30\00:57:10.33 commandments of the Lord, one of the last things it says 00:57:10.36\00:57:12.88 in the Bible, "Blessed are those who keep His commandments 00:57:12.91\00:57:16.63 that they might have a right to enter through the gates 00:57:16.66\00:57:18.99 of the city and eat from the tree of life," friends. 00:57:19.02\00:57:21.51 I would think the one commandment with the 00:57:21.54\00:57:23.30 word "holy", the one commandment with the word "remember", 00:57:23.31\00:57:26.80 that deals with our time and our love relationship with God, 00:57:26.83\00:57:29.97 that would be an important commandment. 00:57:30.00\00:57:31.71 You know, I've run out of time. 00:57:32.71\00:57:34.15 But I want you to keep studying. 00:57:34.18\00:57:35.90 We've got a website, English and Spanish, 00:57:35.93\00:57:39.15 that's called, sabbathtruth.com. 00:57:39.18\00:57:42.23 Please study the information for yourself. 00:57:42.24\00:57:44.98 It's even in Spanish, sabadobiblico.com. 00:57:45.01\00:57:50.27 And we hope you will look at it. 00:57:50.30\00:57:51.88 We're not done with our presentations, friends. 00:57:51.91\00:57:53.72 We hope you join us again for the next in our series, 00:57:53.75\00:57:56.91 Anchors Of Truth. 00:57:56.94\00:57:57.92 God bless you. 00:57:57.93\00:57:59.10
