Welcome to Anchors Of Truth live from Sacramento California. 00:00:12.23\00:00:17.47 Doctrines That Divide with Doug Batchelor. 00:00:17.50\00:00:20.39 Well listen, we're so glad that you can join us live. 00:00:23.27\00:00:26.79 And we are in Sacramento, California. 00:00:26.82\00:00:29.35 Anchors Of Truth is back on the road again. 00:00:29.38\00:00:32.50 We have come to you from Steve Bohr's congregation 00:00:32.90\00:00:36.31 there in Fresno California, from John Carter's congregation 00:00:36.34\00:00:40.63 in Los Angeles California, and now we are at 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.93 Sacramento Central Church, the home of Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:43.94\00:00:49.00 And he is going to be presenting a series that we have 00:00:49.03\00:00:54.05 asked him to do, Truths That Divide. 00:00:54.08\00:00:58.04 And you know something? 00:00:58.05\00:00:59.13 There are truths that we are divided on as Christians. 00:00:59.16\00:01:03.21 There are certain Christians that believe one thing, 00:01:03.24\00:01:05.35 other Christians that believe another. 00:01:05.38\00:01:07.12 And by the way, even in the same denomination 00:01:07.15\00:01:11.85 often there is division on some of these subjects. 00:01:11.88\00:01:16.58 And so these are really doctrinal hot potatoes 00:01:16.61\00:01:20.44 that Pastor Doug Batchelor is going to be taking out, 00:01:20.47\00:01:24.42 looking at them in a very unique way 00:01:24.45\00:01:28.46 for the next five presentations. 00:01:28.49\00:01:31.66 And I am so happy that we can be here with Pastor Doug 00:01:31.69\00:01:36.30 in Sacramento. 00:01:36.33\00:01:37.83 Pastor Doug, would you come out? 00:01:37.86\00:01:39.30 I have been looking forward to seeing you and having our people 00:01:39.31\00:01:44.03 here see you. 00:01:44.06\00:01:45.27 This is black and white. 00:01:47.55\00:01:49.67 Hello, Pastor Gilley. Good to see you. 00:01:51.75\00:01:53.74 This is a unique outfit. 00:01:53.75\00:01:56.40 And do you want to give us any explanation 00:01:56.43\00:01:58.38 or just let us kind of decide if we can figure it our ourselves? 00:01:58.39\00:02:01.60 What's wrong with my outfit? 00:02:01.61\00:02:03.09 Well it looks like it's sort of divided. 00:02:03.12\00:02:05.58 And you even have... 00:02:05.85\00:02:07.23 I'll give a little explanation in a little bit. 00:02:07.24\00:02:09.60 Okay, alright. 00:02:09.61\00:02:10.62 Keep people, don't want them changing the channel yet. 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.90 No, that's right. 00:02:12.91\00:02:14.22 But this is unique. 00:02:14.92\00:02:17.53 I will say this, I have never seen anyone... 00:02:17.54\00:02:21.01 I have seen preachers show up with a brown shoe 00:02:21.04\00:02:23.38 and a black shoe before, which you've done tonight. 00:02:23.39\00:02:26.33 But I have never seen one show up in a half black 00:02:26.36\00:02:31.77 half white suit. 00:02:31.80\00:02:33.75 It might start a new trend, you never know. 00:02:35.15\00:02:36.88 You never can tell. 00:02:36.91\00:02:38.12 People have started trends like that. 00:02:38.73\00:02:40.32 Should we let them know tonight we're launching 00:02:40.33\00:02:41.97 a new denomination? 00:02:41.98\00:02:43.10 No, I don't think so. 00:02:43.13\00:02:44.88 Listen, you know that 3ABN and Amazing Facts have 00:02:47.17\00:02:52.86 a long history together. 00:02:52.89\00:02:54.44 And just a minute ago, I was talking to Danny Shelton, 00:02:54.47\00:02:57.33 and you probably already know this, but the first really 00:02:57.36\00:03:01.30 good cameras that 3ABN had were given to us by Amazing Facts. 00:03:01.31\00:03:08.35 They were in Canada and Joe Crews, for some reason 00:03:08.38\00:03:14.30 things had kind of shifted in Canada, and so Joe Crews 00:03:14.33\00:03:19.13 had called Danny Shelton and said, "We have these cameras, 00:03:19.16\00:03:22.92 and I'll tell you what we'll do. 00:03:22.95\00:03:24.70 We'll give you these cameras if you will put Amazing Facts 00:03:24.73\00:03:29.93 on for a year." 00:03:29.96\00:03:31.37 And Amazing Facts has been on ever since on 3ABN. 00:03:31.74\00:03:36.10 The rest of the story you may not know, Jim... 00:03:36.13\00:03:38.52 I probably don't. 00:03:38.55\00:03:39.56 The first cameras we got here at Sacramento Central 00:03:39.59\00:03:42.96 came from 3ABN. 00:03:42.99\00:03:44.50 Is that right? 00:03:44.53\00:03:45.58 It's true. 00:03:46.32\00:03:47.32 You know, what comes around goes around. 00:03:47.33\00:03:49.41 These two ministries have just worked together hand and glove. 00:03:50.21\00:03:56.09 Our philosophies are very much the same. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.99 We reach out by faith to do things that only God can do. 00:03:59.02\00:04:04.39 By the way, I have really discovered in the last few years 00:04:04.42\00:04:07.27 the difference between faith and presumption. 00:04:07.30\00:04:10.09 And I really believe that presumption is when we 00:04:10.12\00:04:13.65 attempt something that will glorify ourselves, 00:04:13.68\00:04:16.66 and faith is when we launch out for God something 00:04:16.69\00:04:21.06 that will glorify God. 00:04:21.09\00:04:22.91 And those things never fail because God is always with us. 00:04:22.94\00:04:27.16 Presumption, most generally, will fail. 00:04:27.17\00:04:31.24 But not faith. 00:04:31.27\00:04:32.60 Well Doug, it's good to be with you. 00:04:32.90\00:04:34.14 We're looking forward to this series tonight. 00:04:34.15\00:04:35.95 Tonight is, justice and mercy and salvation. 00:04:37.33\00:04:41.74 And so that is an extremely important subject. 00:04:41.77\00:04:45.22 Amen, we'll be talking about the relationship 00:04:45.62\00:04:47.62 between the law and grace. 00:04:47.63\00:04:49.25 And it is a doctrine that sometimes divides. 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.97 It does. 00:04:51.98\00:04:52.99 As I was mentioning just before you came out, 00:04:53.01\00:04:55.18 even within denominations. 00:04:55.21\00:04:58.07 Not necessarily one denomination and another, 00:04:58.08\00:05:00.84 but a lot of people, even within families, 00:05:00.87\00:05:03.96 people are sometimes divided on this very important subject. 00:05:03.99\00:05:08.19 Well listen, I'd like to have a little word of prayer 00:05:08.59\00:05:10.52 just before you present this extremely 00:05:10.53\00:05:14.26 important subject tonight. 00:05:14.27\00:05:16.21 And would you call your friends and tell them to tune in, 00:05:16.23\00:05:20.74 that pastor Doug is coming live right now. 00:05:21.14\00:05:24.21 This is not a taped performance at this time 00:05:24.24\00:05:27.40 at 7:05 on this Wednesday night, which is the 19th of October. 00:05:27.43\00:05:33.67 It is coming to you live. 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.86 Call your friend and invite that friend, and even others, 00:05:35.89\00:05:41.39 to join you in listening on radio, watching on television, 00:05:41.42\00:05:47.11 this most important truth. 00:05:47.14\00:05:48.81 Shall we pray together. 00:05:48.82\00:05:49.82 Father in heaven, we're so thankful tonight for 00:05:49.83\00:05:53.00 the Word of God. 00:05:53.03\00:05:54.35 We're thankful that You have not left us without 00:05:54.36\00:05:59.37 a truth that can be defined. 00:05:59.40\00:06:02.50 And Father, we pray that You'll help us to lay aside 00:06:02.80\00:06:05.37 all preconceived ideas, that You'll help us to simply look 00:06:05.40\00:06:10.40 at what does the Bible say. 00:06:10.41\00:06:12.80 And then to be willing to follow. 00:06:13.24\00:06:17.52 And we thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. 00:06:17.55\00:06:22.39 - God bless you. - Thank you, Jim. 00:06:22.42\00:06:24.35 Well good evening, friends. 00:06:25.94\00:06:27.49 We have been praying for and planning for this presentation 00:06:28.60\00:06:33.79 for some time now. 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.55 And I'd like to just add my welcome to the 3ABN viewers. 00:06:35.58\00:06:38.52 It's very exciting to continue working in partnership 00:06:38.55\00:06:41.70 with this ministry over the years. 00:06:41.73\00:06:43.40 And we're really praying that God will continue to 00:06:43.80\00:06:47.66 pour out His Spirit. 00:06:47.69\00:06:49.12 Now this program, we're not going to have 00:06:49.15\00:06:51.12 your typical offering appeal. 00:06:51.22\00:06:53.03 All we're going to do is say right now that both 3ABN and 00:06:53.06\00:06:56.89 Amazing Facts are faith based ministries. 00:06:56.90\00:06:59.60 If you've been blessed by these ministries and you'd like to 00:06:59.63\00:07:03.73 give a donation to either or both, then the websites are 00:07:03.76\00:07:06.95 going to be up there on the screen. 00:07:06.98\00:07:08.63 We appreciate your going to Amazing Facts.com or org, 00:07:08.93\00:07:13.37 3abn.org, and showing your support. 00:07:13.40\00:07:16.31 And after tonight's program, if you're wanting a refund 00:07:16.94\00:07:19.82 for a past donation, then you're going to have to 00:07:19.85\00:07:22.43 call the Federal Reserve. 00:07:22.44\00:07:23.94 But there is a purpose for what I'm wearing. 00:07:24.61\00:07:29.53 And you can probably tell from the title of this series, 00:07:29.83\00:07:32.93 Doctrines That Divide, it has something to do with that. 00:07:32.94\00:07:35.88 And it is actually utilitarian. 00:07:36.37\00:07:38.83 This is more of a uniform that will help you understand. 00:07:38.86\00:07:42.44 Because this is a TV presentation 00:07:42.47\00:07:44.44 and it's a visual medium. 00:07:44.45\00:07:47.86 And we're going to be going from side to side 00:07:48.19\00:07:50.81 here on the platform. 00:07:50.84\00:07:51.91 And I'll get to that in just a moment. 00:07:51.94\00:07:53.73 You know, there are about 34,000 different Christian 00:07:55.18\00:08:00.57 denominations in the world. 00:08:00.58\00:08:02.63 I didn't say 34,000 religions. 00:08:03.34\00:08:06.09 34,000 different Christian denominations. 00:08:06.12\00:08:10.61 Most of them sprang up since the reformation about 500 years ago. 00:08:10.64\00:08:15.40 And they continue to split and divide 00:08:16.25\00:08:19.93 over, typically, doctrines. 00:08:19.96\00:08:22.76 Doctrine is a very divisive thing. 00:08:23.06\00:08:26.03 This week, if you're from the Sacramento area, 00:08:26.58\00:08:29.35 you know that a sister church right around the corner from us, 00:08:29.72\00:08:33.88 lovely people, were in the front pages of the religious section 00:08:33.91\00:08:38.01 over a major division regarding the doctrine of 00:08:38.04\00:08:41.76 gay marriage, in particular. 00:08:41.79\00:08:43.59 I was on the phone with the pastor there today and 00:08:43.89\00:08:45.76 praying for him, because it's just a terrible struggle 00:08:45.79\00:08:48.86 to go through, a church splitting. 00:08:48.87\00:08:50.73 And I wish I could say that our church was immune 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.77 to these things. 00:08:53.80\00:08:55.25 Now there's one philosophy that sometimes we approach 00:08:55.28\00:08:58.65 these things, we say, "Look, we're Christians. 00:08:58.66\00:09:01.15 Let's not disagree and let's avoid talking about doctrine." 00:09:01.51\00:09:06.06 But that's not really the answer. 00:09:06.26\00:09:07.62 And I don't think that's the answer that Jesus wants either. 00:09:07.65\00:09:10.33 The key is for us to find out what is truth. 00:09:10.72\00:09:13.79 Now I could have a lot of programs and talk about 00:09:14.34\00:09:16.63 all the different things that these 34,000 churches agree on. 00:09:16.66\00:09:20.95 But you know, that may not be very fruitful. 00:09:21.80\00:09:24.62 Because when Jesus comes back, He is coming back for 00:09:25.24\00:09:29.07 a united people. 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.46 The Bible tells us, in the very near future 00:09:32.23\00:09:35.00 there's going to be a polarizing between Christian groups, 00:09:35.03\00:09:39.43 professedly Christian groups. 00:09:39.46\00:09:41.26 One is going to have the mark of the beast 00:09:41.60\00:09:43.81 and the other is going to have the seal of God. 00:09:43.84\00:09:46.12 And you know what's going to divide them... 00:09:46.15\00:09:47.88 ...is doctrine. 00:09:48.62\00:09:49.98 And so we need to understand what the Bible really says. 00:09:50.77\00:09:54.72 Jesus said, "I've not come to send peace, but a sword." 00:09:54.75\00:09:56.99 And I don't want to cause any more problems 00:09:57.02\00:09:58.90 than the church already has. 00:09:58.93\00:10:00.32 But I think we need to honestly look at these very important 00:10:00.62\00:10:03.89 divisive doctrines today because we need to know where we 00:10:03.92\00:10:07.75 stand when Jesus comes back. 00:10:07.78\00:10:09.76 And that's the reason we're having this unique series. 00:10:09.79\00:10:12.71 Now let me explain what we're doing. 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.77 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:10:16.07\00:10:18.14 I have not always been a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:10:18.98\00:10:22.63 I'd like to believe I first came to Christ... 00:10:22.64\00:10:25.45 And I was a Christian. 00:10:26.04\00:10:27.42 I was sincere and I was genuine. 00:10:27.43\00:10:29.46 But I did not understand or believe or accept at that time 00:10:29.49\00:10:33.00 the doctrines that the Seventh-day Adventists believe. 00:10:33.03\00:10:35.73 Then over the course of two or three years in studying 00:10:36.41\00:10:39.74 and being exposed to a broad spectrum of different beliefs, 00:10:39.77\00:10:44.16 I settled down over 33 years ago and became 00:10:44.69\00:10:47.61 a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:10:47.64\00:10:48.91 And as time has gone by, I'm more convinced than ever 00:10:49.40\00:10:52.42 that these teachings are the closest teachings to the 00:10:53.36\00:10:56.58 teachings of Jesus in the Bible. 00:10:56.61\00:10:58.27 And frankly, it grieves me that so many dear Christian people 00:10:59.07\00:11:03.79 are confused about what some of these pivotal truths are. 00:11:04.50\00:11:09.15 Now I also want to say right at the beginning; 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.96 I believe that there are millions of loving, sincere, 00:11:12.39\00:11:18.52 spirit filled Christians in a broad spectrum of 00:11:18.55\00:11:22.52 different denominations. 00:11:22.55\00:11:24.17 But what we're going to be focusing on during this series 00:11:24.95\00:11:27.92 is, I'm going to take some of the primary differences between 00:11:27.95\00:11:31.41 Seventh-day Adventist Christians and when I stand over here, 00:11:31.44\00:11:34.46 I'm going to represent Pastor Doug. 00:11:34.85\00:11:36.75 That will be this side. 00:11:36.78\00:11:37.77 Though I won't always be showing you this side. 00:11:38.42\00:11:40.82 And please don't read anything special into the 00:11:40.83\00:11:43.60 black and white suit. 00:11:43.63\00:11:44.96 If you want to know the truth, they were on sale 00:11:45.36\00:11:48.02 at Penney's or Sears, I forget. 00:11:48.05\00:11:51.20 It was a great deal. 00:11:51.61\00:11:52.92 And we just needed two of the same brand that were different. 00:11:53.65\00:11:57.46 And this is what she came back with. 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.63 And then we took it to a Christian tailor. 00:12:01.33\00:12:04.36 One of the members did a magnificent job, I think. 00:12:04.37\00:12:07.28 It might start a new trend, you never know. 00:12:07.31\00:12:09.36 But this is a visual thing. 00:12:09.81\00:12:10.93 So when I'm over here, I'm Pastor Doug. 00:12:10.94\00:12:12.36 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:12:12.39\00:12:13.56 When I come over here, I'm going to be a person 00:12:14.04\00:12:18.39 we'll call, Pastor Barney. 00:12:18.42\00:12:20.25 Now I just, you know, I was thinking of maybe 00:12:21.15\00:12:23.68 Pastor Jim or Pastor Bob. 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.52 And I thought, you know, that's probably going to 00:12:25.55\00:12:27.31 resemble too much of the living. 00:12:27.34\00:12:29.01 And so I thought I'd just pick Pastor Barney. 00:12:29.31\00:12:31.19 And probably there's another Pastor Barney around the 00:12:31.22\00:12:33.05 corner I didn't know about. 00:12:33.06\00:12:34.16 And I don't want to offend anybody, but let's just 00:12:34.18\00:12:36.04 call him Pastor Barney. 00:12:36.06\00:12:37.22 He represents a conglomerate of mainline evangelical beliefs 00:12:37.57\00:12:44.18 that are non-Adventist. 00:12:44.21\00:12:45.87 And some of them don't agree with each other, 00:12:45.88\00:12:47.55 and I know that. 00:12:47.56\00:12:48.56 And when I stand here, I'm going to be representing 00:12:49.17\00:12:52.19 a mediator. 00:12:52.22\00:12:53.62 So I'll be a referee. 00:12:54.59\00:12:56.34 And when you see me do this, it's a fashion statement. 00:12:56.37\00:12:59.49 I just realized, when I do that it actually matches 00:13:01.54\00:13:03.50 right up the back, doesn't it. 00:13:03.51\00:13:04.62 And so, I'll be going back and forth, and representing 00:13:06.70\00:13:10.56 these different positions. 00:13:10.59\00:13:12.08 Now I think it's interesting that this year, 00:13:12.95\00:13:17.02 it was actually March 3rd, USA TODAY did a special report 00:13:17.05\00:13:23.11 where the headlines were dealing with the fastest growing church 00:13:23.14\00:13:27.05 in North America. 00:13:27.08\00:13:28.40 And this is from March 2011, the USA TODAY headlines read: 00:13:28.43\00:13:33.54 And then one might naturally ask, "Why?" 00:13:56.08\00:13:59.22 Frankly, I'm disappointed we're growing so slowly. 00:13:59.95\00:14:02.23 I think when God pours out His Spirit in the last days, 00:14:03.39\00:14:05.72 we're going to see an explosion of Pentecostal proportions 00:14:05.75\00:14:09.97 No allusion to a particular denomination there. 00:14:10.00\00:14:12.57 But that power of Pentecost will be spreading. 00:14:13.47\00:14:16.42 But the reason I believe the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:14:16.45\00:14:18.64 is growing is because people are looking for stability. 00:14:18.65\00:14:22.94 When they read their Bibles for themselves, they go, "Oh." 00:14:22.97\00:14:26.77 And they find that these really are biblical beliefs. 00:14:27.30\00:14:30.79 Now, when you think of Seventh-day Adventists, 00:14:31.71\00:14:35.01 of a broad spectrum of doctrines you might consider, 00:14:35.46\00:14:40.07 what doctrine pops into your mind first? 00:14:40.10\00:14:42.92 The Sabbath. 00:14:43.79\00:14:44.84 Now the reason that the Sabbath is there and that is does 00:14:45.51\00:14:48.28 come to the front is because Seventh-day Adventists believe 00:14:48.31\00:14:50.87 the Ten Commandments are still in effect. 00:14:50.90\00:14:52.59 And as a result, you've got one commandment that 00:14:52.62\00:14:54.85 begins with the word "remember." 00:14:54.88\00:14:56.39 We figure that God meant that. 00:14:56.42\00:14:58.89 But you'd be surprised, in the last 150 years, 00:14:59.45\00:15:02.97 how many mainline Christian denominations have begun to 00:15:03.00\00:15:07.24 question if the Ten Commandments are even still in effect. 00:15:07.27\00:15:11.73 And so tonight, we're going to talk principally about 00:15:13.03\00:15:16.06 what salvation is in relationship to the 00:15:17.24\00:15:19.70 Ten Commandments, and if the Ten Commandments 00:15:19.73\00:15:21.95 are still valid, if God expects Christians to keep the 00:15:21.96\00:15:26.05 Ten Commandments. 00:15:26.08\00:15:27.44 And that's going to be our first question 00:15:27.47\00:15:29.42 we're going to deal with. 00:15:29.45\00:15:30.58 And maybe what we should do is, so you see that it's fair, 00:15:30.96\00:15:34.87 we'll flip a coin and see. 00:15:34.90\00:15:37.40 Heads I win, tails you lose, Pastor Barney. 00:15:40.60\00:15:42.93 Heads, I win. 00:15:46.72\00:15:47.80 I want to tell you right up front. 00:15:50.43\00:15:51.93 If you thought for a minute that this is going to be 00:15:51.96\00:15:53.92 a fair debate, it's not. 00:15:53.95\00:15:56.51 I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:15:56.91\00:15:58.75 Obviously, I am biased. 00:15:58.78\00:16:00.61 This is not even really a debate. 00:16:00.64\00:16:02.40 I'm just coming over here... 00:16:02.43\00:16:03.97 Matter of fact, why don't you just say "hello" to 00:16:04.21\00:16:05.50 Pastor Barney for a second. 00:16:05.53\00:16:06.68 Hello, Pastor Barney. 00:16:06.98\00:16:08.61 Good evening, my beloved. 00:16:08.65\00:16:10.01 And so, this is Pastor Barney over here. 00:16:10.31\00:16:13.38 He is going to represent... 00:16:13.68\00:16:14.86 He's not going to get fair time tonight. 00:16:14.89\00:16:16.34 I'm just sharing that with you. 00:16:16.37\00:16:17.67 If anyone says, "that wasn't fair," you're right, it wasn't. 00:16:17.70\00:16:19.93 But I'm doing this to help illustrate what some of the most 00:16:20.95\00:16:23.54 common answers are. 00:16:23.57\00:16:25.67 And I should also tell you, in fairness, that I have 00:16:25.70\00:16:29.91 preached in and worshipped with Christians 00:16:29.94\00:16:34.47 in Baptist churches, Methodist churches, 00:16:35.37\00:16:38.17 I taught Methodist Sunday school, 00:16:38.20\00:16:39.50 Church of Christ, Pentecostal, Nazarene, Foursquare, 00:16:39.90\00:16:44.85 and I could keep on going, all over the country. 00:16:44.86\00:16:47.43 So I have a pretty good feel about what the beliefs are 00:16:47.46\00:16:51.35 and what the answers are to some of these biblical conundrums. 00:16:51.36\00:16:55.11 So for question number one, we're actually going to let 00:16:55.38\00:16:57.81 Pastor Barney start first. 00:16:57.84\00:16:59.35 Do we need to keep the Ten Commandments? 00:16:59.55\00:17:02.21 Alright, here's a scripture we're going to consider. 00:17:02.58\00:17:05.45 That silhouette is strangely familiar. 00:17:06.52\00:17:08.73 Romans chapter 6 verse 14. 00:17:10.92\00:17:13.45 And I'm going to be going through a lot of 00:17:13.86\00:17:15.17 scriptures very quickly. 00:17:15.20\00:17:16.30 You may not see all of them on the screen. 00:17:16.33\00:17:18.07 Hopefully you'll see at least a reference on the 00:17:18.08\00:17:20.24 bottom of your screen. 00:17:20.27\00:17:21.61 "For sin shall not have dominion over you, 00:17:22.50\00:17:25.49 for you are not under the law but under grace." 00:17:25.52\00:17:28.53 There you have it, Pastor Doug. 00:17:28.56\00:17:29.87 You're not under the law. 00:17:29.90\00:17:31.49 You don't have to keep the Ten Commandments anymore. 00:17:31.50\00:17:33.86 We are now under grace. 00:17:33.89\00:17:35.56 As opposed to being under the law, the Ten commandments. 00:17:35.59\00:17:38.63 So when you start teaching about the Ten Commandments, 00:17:38.66\00:17:40.89 you're being legalistic. 00:17:40.92\00:17:42.88 Another verse often used, Galatians 3 verse 13. 00:17:43.28\00:17:48.04 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law." 00:17:48.07\00:17:51.73 The law is a curse. 00:17:51.74\00:17:53.02 We've been saved from that curse. 00:17:53.05\00:17:54.75 So why would we want to go back and be under that curse anymore. 00:17:54.78\00:17:58.03 Alright, Pastor Barney. 00:17:59.28\00:18:00.53 Please allow me to deal with that now. 00:18:00.54\00:18:02.95 Before we figure out what the Lord has saved us from, 00:18:03.18\00:18:05.80 we need to know what is sin. 00:18:05.83\00:18:07.98 Romans chapter 6 verse 23. 00:18:08.01\00:18:10.43 "Sin is the transgression..." 00:18:11.27\00:18:13.54 No, I read you... 00:18:13.55\00:18:14.58 "The wages of sin..." 00:18:14.59\00:18:15.92 Sorry, I was jumping to another verse. 00:18:15.95\00:18:17.73 "The wages of sin is death." 00:18:19.57\00:18:22.24 So the curse that the Lord has delivered us from 00:18:22.27\00:18:25.03 is the curse of death. 00:18:25.06\00:18:26.80 When it says that you're not under the law 00:18:27.28\00:18:29.66 but you're under grace, it means you are not longer 00:18:29.69\00:18:31.79 under the penalty of the law. 00:18:31.82\00:18:34.29 But because you're not under the penalty of the law, 00:18:34.49\00:18:36.90 does that mean you don't need to obey the law anymore? 00:18:36.93\00:18:39.61 The definition for sin is, it's the transgression of the law. 00:18:41.14\00:18:44.52 That's 1 John 3 verse 4. 00:18:44.53\00:18:46.11 And so, if sin is the transgression of God's law, 00:18:46.58\00:18:49.61 if there's no sin, well you don't need a Savior. 00:18:50.38\00:18:54.19 If there's no law, there's sin. 00:18:54.20\00:18:56.01 No sin, you don't need a Savior. 00:18:56.04\00:18:57.22 You can understand why the devil would like that doctrine 00:18:57.25\00:18:59.88 or that misinterpretation of things. 00:18:59.91\00:19:02.51 Not under the law. 00:19:03.04\00:19:04.47 Suppose for a moment that a policeman enters a 00:19:04.91\00:19:09.68 convenient store in some major city and he spots a man 00:19:09.71\00:19:13.91 that is stealing, he's walking out the door and he is stealing 00:19:13.94\00:19:18.15 three loaves of bread for his hungry children 00:19:18.18\00:19:20.73 and maybe one Twinkie for himself. 00:19:20.76\00:19:22.52 And before he gets out the door, the policeman grabs that man by 00:19:22.94\00:19:25.78 the collar and he handcuffs him and he starts to write him up. 00:19:25.81\00:19:30.17 And the man falls down before that policeman 00:19:30.79\00:19:33.75 and says, "Please have mercy on me." 00:19:33.78\00:19:36.87 Now as soon as he has been caught, it's on the 00:19:36.90\00:19:38.59 video cameras in the convenient store. 00:19:38.62\00:19:40.52 He stole the bread, he was heading out the door, 00:19:40.55\00:19:42.23 he wasn't paying, and he looked shady, 00:19:42.26\00:19:44.01 and he stuck them in his backpack. 00:19:45.33\00:19:47.23 And as soon as he's caught, he's under the law. 00:19:47.85\00:19:51.52 He's handcuffed. He is under the law. 00:19:51.55\00:19:53.90 He's guilty. 00:19:54.46\00:19:55.48 He's under the penalty of the law. 00:19:55.94\00:19:57.30 He's going down to the station, he's going to pay a fine, 00:19:57.33\00:19:59.50 he's going to maybe go to jail. 00:19:59.51\00:20:01.12 But he falls down before the policeman and says, 00:20:01.71\00:20:04.83 "Officer, please have mercy. I've got hungry children." 00:20:04.86\00:20:09.45 And so the policeman says, "Alright, I'll tell you 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.69 what we're going to do." 00:20:11.72\00:20:12.76 He walks over to the cashier and he says, 00:20:13.02\00:20:14.58 "How much is the bread?" 00:20:14.61\00:20:15.59 And he says, "I'll pay for the bread." 00:20:15.89\00:20:17.43 And he tells him to put the Twinkie back. 00:20:17.88\00:20:19.48 And he says, "I'm going to unlock the handcuffs. 00:20:20.92\00:20:22.82 You're free." 00:20:24.75\00:20:25.92 As soon as the policeman pays his fine, he's free. 00:20:26.29\00:20:31.79 He is now under grace. 00:20:31.82\00:20:33.79 And so as soon and his handcuffs are unlocked, 00:20:33.82\00:20:36.86 he says, "Thank you, officer." 00:20:36.89\00:20:38.34 He unzips his backpack and he goes up the aisles, 00:20:38.37\00:20:41.22 he starts to just shovel things in his backpack. 00:20:41.23\00:20:43.31 Because he's no longer under the law, but he's now under grace. 00:20:43.34\00:20:46.84 Is that a right interpretation? 00:20:48.05\00:20:49.83 So the idea that now we are no longer under the law, 00:20:50.21\00:20:53.50 and so we are free to break the law, 00:20:53.53\00:20:56.20 what would the end of that be? 00:20:56.50\00:20:58.32 I don't think that follows the Bible. 00:20:58.73\00:21:00.96 James chapter 2 verse 10. 00:21:00.99\00:21:02.72 "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend 00:21:03.63\00:21:07.67 in one point, he is guilty of all. 00:21:07.70\00:21:10.26 For he that said, 'Do not commit adultery,' 00:21:10.53\00:21:12.44 said also, 'Do not kill.' 00:21:12.47\00:21:13.95 If you don't commit adultery, yet if you kill..." 00:21:13.98\00:21:16.70 Now where do you find, "Don't commit adultery," 00:21:16.73\00:21:18.54 and "Don't kill?" 00:21:18.57\00:21:19.58 Does everyone here need me to read the Ten Commandments? 00:21:19.88\00:21:21.81 Or do we know that those are two of the Ten Commandments? 00:21:21.84\00:21:24.79 This is New Testament. 00:21:25.56\00:21:26.98 "Whoever said, 'Do not commit adultery,' 00:21:27.54\00:21:29.25 said also, 'Do not kill.'" 00:21:29.28\00:21:30.79 It says we're not only to speak it, we're to do it. 00:21:42.21\00:21:44.60 And then, you know, one of my favorite verses 00:21:45.06\00:21:47.00 Is Deuteronomy 5:29. 00:21:47.03\00:21:48.88 And this is the Lord speaking, this isn't Moses. 00:21:49.89\00:21:52.75 God is saying, "Oh that they would fear Me 00:22:05.15\00:22:08.08 and keep all of My commandments always for them." 00:22:08.11\00:22:12.39 Because, whenever we sin and break God's law, it hurts us. 00:22:12.69\00:22:16.38 Pastor Doug, that was from the Old Testament. 00:22:18.25\00:22:20.03 It doesn't count. 00:22:20.06\00:22:21.16 Okay, well what's your next argument, Pastor Barney? 00:22:22.45\00:22:25.75 Now we're going to deal with not being under the law because 00:22:27.16\00:22:30.53 you've got a variation between the letter of the law 00:22:30.56\00:22:34.56 and the spirit of the law. 00:22:34.57\00:22:36.02 Alright, Romans chapter 7 verse 6. 00:22:36.94\00:22:40.54 Ten Commandments; it's the letter of the law. 00:22:50.72\00:22:52.77 2 Corinthians 3:6 00:22:53.59\00:22:55.78 Not the old covenant anymore. 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.08 The Ten Commandments is the old covenant. 00:23:02.11\00:23:03.52 And if you read verse 7, if you're questioning 00:23:12.27\00:23:14.18 what that letter is he's talking about, 00:23:14.21\00:23:16.08 he says, "written and engraved in stone." 00:23:16.11\00:23:20.12 Now how can you escape that, Pastor Doug? 00:23:20.15\00:23:22.05 It says we're not under the letter, we're under the spirit. 00:23:23.07\00:23:27.18 The letter is the part of the law that was written 00:23:27.21\00:23:30.14 and engraved in stone. 00:23:30.15\00:23:32.19 How many laws were engraved in stone? 00:23:32.39\00:23:34.42 It's the Ten Commandments. 00:23:34.45\00:23:36.08 It says, we're not under the law and we're not to 00:23:36.11\00:23:38.13 go by the letter anymore, we're to go by the spirit. 00:23:38.16\00:23:40.80 So obviously, we don't need to be controlled by that which 00:23:41.48\00:23:44.32 was engraved in stone. 00:23:44.35\00:23:46.26 Okay Pastor Barney, let's address that. 00:23:47.97\00:23:50.82 There is never a conflict between the letter 00:23:50.85\00:23:54.48 and the spirit. 00:23:54.51\00:23:55.61 In other words, if you are keeping the spirit of the law, 00:23:56.13\00:23:59.15 you will always be keeping the letter of the law. 00:23:59.18\00:24:01.91 But it is possible for someone to try to keep the letter 00:24:01.94\00:24:05.04 and not have the spirit. 00:24:05.44\00:24:06.88 And that's what Jesus and Paul are talking about. 00:24:06.91\00:24:09.15 An example would be, if you look in your Bibles at 00:24:09.18\00:24:12.09 Matthew 5:27, Jesus said, and this will be including verse 28: 00:24:12.12\00:24:17.46 Now where does that come from? 00:24:22.01\00:24:23.21 One of the Ten Commandments, the seventh commandment. 00:24:24.18\00:24:26.47 Now the letter of the law says, "Don't commit adultery." 00:24:35.97\00:24:39.81 The spirit of the law says, "It's not just an action, 00:24:40.40\00:24:43.84 it's also an attitude." 00:24:43.87\00:24:45.32 And by the way, it works both ways. 00:24:45.35\00:24:46.70 It's not just men looking at women. 00:24:46.73\00:24:48.13 It's women looking at men. 00:24:48.16\00:24:49.68 It's talking about an attitude. 00:24:49.71\00:24:52.20 Jesus also said, "You've heard it said by them of old 00:24:52.60\00:24:56.08 that you shall not swear falsely." 00:24:56.11\00:24:58.77 And He said, "But I tell you, let your yes be yes 00:24:59.28\00:25:01.85 and your no be no." 00:25:01.86\00:25:03.28 The letter of the law says, "Don't bear false witness." 00:25:03.31\00:25:05.57 But He said, let even your intentions of your 00:25:05.96\00:25:08.45 heart be honest. 00:25:08.48\00:25:10.41 The letter of the law says, "You will not kill." 00:25:11.11\00:25:13.75 The spirit of the law, Jesus said is, if you are angry with 00:25:14.15\00:25:16.68 your brother without cause, you're guilty of murder. 00:25:16.71\00:25:18.83 And so Christ is simply saying, and Paul is saying, 00:25:19.13\00:25:22.93 don't be governed by the letter of the action 00:25:22.96\00:25:26.47 and forget about the attitude; the spirit of the law. 00:25:26.50\00:25:30.93 We should be keeping both the letter and the spirit. 00:25:30.96\00:25:33.65 Now it is possible for a person to say, "You're keeping the 00:25:33.68\00:25:38.62 letter of the law, you're legalistic, 00:25:38.65\00:25:40.13 and you're not keeping the spirit." 00:25:40.14\00:25:41.17 Because some people are consumed with the 00:25:41.20\00:25:43.40 outward appearance of obedience. 00:25:43.43\00:25:45.41 This is what Jesus was condemning among the Pharisees. 00:25:45.44\00:25:48.79 It was all the external appearance. 00:25:48.80\00:25:50.91 But He said, it's not in your heart. 00:25:50.94\00:25:52.37 But it is not possible for a person to keep the spirit 00:25:52.67\00:25:55.73 and break the letter. 00:25:55.76\00:25:56.75 Think about how silly this would sound. 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.26 If a person said, "I am going to keep the spirit of the law 00:26:00.56\00:26:04.31 of not looking at the opposite sex and lusting. 00:26:04.34\00:26:07.22 I may commit adultery, but I won't be 00:26:07.25\00:26:10.35 thinking it in my heart." 00:26:10.38\00:26:11.79 Is that possible? 00:26:13.28\00:26:14.46 Or for a person to say, "I will keep the spirit of the law 00:26:14.49\00:26:17.09 and not be angry with my brother without a cause. 00:26:17.10\00:26:19.55 I might murder him, but I'll love him in my heart 00:26:20.29\00:26:22.59 while I'm doing it." 00:26:22.69\00:26:23.72 So the Bible is talking about a consistency between 00:26:24.93\00:26:28.34 keeping the letter and the spirit. 00:26:28.37\00:26:31.38 It's not just the action. 00:26:31.41\00:26:32.67 God wants us to do it from the heart. 00:26:32.70\00:26:35.26 And so, keeping the spirit does not abolish the letter. 00:26:35.56\00:26:38.34 The letter is kindergarten. 00:26:38.37\00:26:39.86 The spirit is college. 00:26:39.89\00:26:42.01 So we're to have the whole thing. 00:26:42.39\00:26:43.96 Alright, another common... 00:26:44.36\00:26:46.61 I've got to make sure I'm on the right side 00:26:47.01\00:26:49.06 of these doctrines here. 00:26:49.07\00:26:50.08 Pastor Doug, the Ten Commandments 00:26:51.98\00:26:54.26 are the old covenant. 00:26:54.29\00:26:56.31 And I think that all of us agree here that we are now 00:26:57.23\00:26:59.75 under the new covenant. 00:26:59.78\00:27:01.42 And I want to know how the silhouette can be 00:27:02.31\00:27:04.23 taller than me. 00:27:04.26\00:27:05.43 Proof for that is Deuteronomy chapter 4 verse 13. 00:27:07.74\00:27:13.91 Is there any question then? 00:27:22.94\00:27:24.72 I mean, who can deny that the Ten Commandments 00:27:24.75\00:27:27.21 are the old covenant. 00:27:27.24\00:27:28.94 That's what He wrote with His own finger in stone. 00:27:28.95\00:27:32.49 And it says that we're not under the old covenant now. 00:27:32.89\00:27:36.15 Everybody believes, even Seventh-day Adventists, 00:27:36.18\00:27:38.03 I understand, believe that we're under the new covenant now. 00:27:38.06\00:27:41.79 So why are you trying to put people back under the 00:27:42.24\00:27:44.46 old covenant again? 00:27:44.49\00:27:45.88 Hebrews 8... 00:27:46.60\00:27:47.61 This gets serious. 00:27:47.62\00:27:48.70 If you just read things by themselves, it can be confusing. 00:27:49.64\00:27:52.90 That's what I'm going to do as Pastor Barney. 00:27:52.91\00:27:54.87 "For if the first covenant had been faultless, then there 00:27:58.94\00:28:02.15 would be no place sought for the second." 00:28:02.16\00:28:04.44 Hebrews 8 verse 13. 00:28:05.38\00:28:06.95 There you've got it, friends. 00:28:16.01\00:28:17.33 Take it from Pastor Barney. 00:28:18.31\00:28:20.18 I just read it to you out of the New Testament 00:28:20.21\00:28:22.07 that the old covenant is the Ten Commandments. 00:28:22.10\00:28:24.74 It is obsolete, prepared to vanish away, and faulty. 00:28:24.77\00:28:31.03 It said all that. 00:28:31.06\00:28:32.07 Now how are you going to deal with that? 00:28:32.08\00:28:33.69 Ah-ha. Okay. 00:28:33.72\00:28:35.65 Let's keep reading. 00:28:37.53\00:28:38.60 Now Pastor Barney, you need to read everything that it 00:28:38.61\00:28:41.26 says here about that verse there in Hebrews. 00:28:41.27\00:28:43.99 First, I want you to know in Romans 7:12. 00:28:44.66\00:28:48.38 How can the Ten Commandments be passed away when Paul, 00:28:49.05\00:28:52.13 New Testament, says that "the law is holy, 00:28:52.16\00:28:57.53 the commandment is holy and just and good." 00:28:57.56\00:29:00.14 In fact, everything you're going to find that the Bibles says 00:29:00.15\00:29:03.05 in describing the Ten Commandments 00:29:03.06\00:29:04.70 are the very same characteristics of God Himself. 00:29:04.73\00:29:08.78 You name a characteristic of God, especially if you read 00:29:09.08\00:29:12.14 Psalm 119, it describes His law with the same 00:29:12.17\00:29:15.50 characteristics as Himself. 00:29:15.51\00:29:17.86 So to abolish the Ten Commandment law 00:29:17.89\00:29:21.00 and say that it's faded away, you're going to end up 00:29:21.01\00:29:23.30 starting to get rid of God and erase Him, Himself. 00:29:23.31\00:29:26.73 You can also see here where it says in Romans 9 verse 4, 00:29:27.26\00:29:30.51 "Who are Israelites, to whom pertaineth the adoption, 00:29:31.72\00:29:35.21 and glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law..." 00:29:35.24\00:29:40.87 Wait a second here. 00:29:40.90\00:29:41.90 You mean the covenants are separate 00:29:42.30\00:29:44.51 from the giving of the law? 00:29:44.54\00:29:46.19 That's what it says, they're two separate things. 00:29:46.22\00:29:47.66 "The covenants, and the giving of the law." 00:29:47.69\00:29:49.66 Well I thought the Ten Commandments 00:29:49.69\00:29:51.10 were the old covenant. 00:29:51.13\00:29:52.15 Here's where people get confused. 00:29:52.16\00:29:53.79 A covenant is an agreement. 00:29:53.82\00:29:56.78 The subject of the agreement may not change. 00:29:57.60\00:30:00.43 For instance, if you and I sign a contract that you're going to 00:30:00.46\00:30:02.69 buy my house, we make a covenant, we get an agreement. 00:30:02.72\00:30:06.85 You get a copy, I get a copy. We agree to it. 00:30:06.88\00:30:09.27 If you back out of that agreement, 00:30:09.90\00:30:11.87 my house does not evaporate. 00:30:11.90\00:30:13.91 An example would be... 00:30:15.19\00:30:16.95 I was just reading today; Lee Harvey Oswald. 00:30:18.08\00:30:21.45 Do you remember? 00:30:21.46\00:30:22.46 You may not remember, but he's the one who assassinated JKF; 00:30:22.47\00:30:26.65 John F. Kennedy. 00:30:26.66\00:30:28.03 Before that day, I think it was 1959 or 1960, he had become 00:30:28.43\00:30:33.23 disgusted with the US, even though he had been a marine. 00:30:33.24\00:30:36.46 And he decided he wanted to sort of renounce his US citizenship. 00:30:36.49\00:30:39.94 And he went to the USSR and asked to be received 00:30:40.25\00:30:43.46 as a citizen there. 00:30:43.49\00:30:44.97 Which they did. 00:30:45.39\00:30:46.49 And after a while, he got bored and he asked if 00:30:47.21\00:30:49.05 he could come back. 00:30:49.08\00:30:50.22 But when he renounced his citizenship... 00:30:50.66\00:30:54.10 Your citizenship in the US is based on the Constitution. 00:30:54.73\00:30:58.79 When a person renounces their citizenship, the Constitution 00:30:59.64\00:31:02.86 doesn't change. 00:31:02.87\00:31:04.30 Their citizenship and the covenant to uphold the laws 00:31:04.33\00:31:08.39 of the land, you're agreeing to support the Constitution. 00:31:08.42\00:31:11.90 If you say, "I don't want to be an American anymore," 00:31:11.91\00:31:14.05 and you leave the country, the covenant might be broken 00:31:14.06\00:31:17.32 but the Constitution doesn't change. 00:31:17.35\00:31:20.33 And, you know, there's a couple of ways a person 00:31:21.55\00:31:23.69 might become a citizen. 00:31:23.72\00:31:25.57 Some are by birth and others are naturalized by taking a test. 00:31:26.00\00:31:30.76 And it's interesting that... 00:31:30.79\00:31:31.95 I've got a friend who was just voted in as a US citizen. 00:31:32.41\00:31:34.79 He started telling me this stuff that was on his test. 00:31:34.82\00:31:36.91 I realized he knew more about the Constitution than I did. 00:31:36.94\00:31:39.65 Sometimes, people who are converts to Christianity 00:31:41.35\00:31:44.05 know more about the Bible than people who were born into it. 00:31:44.35\00:31:47.15 But that's a different subject maybe for another night. 00:31:47.61\00:31:49.79 Now let me read, with that understanding, let me read in 00:31:49.82\00:31:53.05 Hebrews chapter 8 verse 6. 00:31:53.08\00:31:55.04 Oh, first of all, when God read the Ten Commandments... 00:31:57.07\00:32:00.06 Who knows what chapter that's in when He first gave 00:32:00.09\00:32:02.06 the Ten Commandments? 00:32:02.09\00:32:03.27 Exodus 20. 00:32:03.69\00:32:05.72 You read in Exodus 24, after God spoke the Ten Commandments, 00:32:05.82\00:32:09.95 He then wrote them down. 00:32:09.98\00:32:11.36 Moses brought them a written copy. 00:32:11.39\00:32:13.31 The Bible tells us: 00:32:13.91\00:32:15.12 They made an agreement based on their promises. 00:32:25.93\00:32:28.94 Right? 00:32:28.95\00:32:29.95 Now with that in mind, listen to what Paul 00:32:29.96\00:32:31.37 says again in Hebrews 8. 00:32:31.40\00:32:33.06 The verse that Pastor Barney just read, but he 00:32:33.54\00:32:35.23 left some of it out. 00:32:35.26\00:32:36.43 Verse 6. 00:32:37.53\00:32:38.99 Whose promises? 00:32:50.89\00:32:52.25 God's promises. 00:32:52.28\00:32:53.89 Who broke the covenant, the Ten Commandments or the people? 00:33:06.72\00:33:09.25 And so, what changed was the promises of God. 00:33:10.13\00:33:13.75 The fault was with the ones who made the agreement. 00:33:13.78\00:33:16.97 You can have two people get married 00:33:17.66\00:33:19.14 and they make a covenant. 00:33:19.17\00:33:20.18 And one person can be faithful and say, "I will never 00:33:20.78\00:33:23.68 let go of you." 00:33:23.71\00:33:24.81 But the other one, if they're free, they can 00:33:24.84\00:33:27.25 break that covenant. 00:33:27.28\00:33:28.43 Isn't that right? 00:33:29.08\00:33:30.05 There are two parties involved. 00:33:30.08\00:33:32.05 God said, "I'll never break My covenant. 00:33:32.08\00:33:34.61 The thing I've spoken, I will never change. 00:33:34.64\00:33:36.57 I will keep My promises." 00:33:36.60\00:33:38.26 But our promises aren't so good. 00:33:38.29\00:33:39.99 That's why the new covenant is superior, because it's 00:33:40.02\00:33:42.77 based upon a different sacrifice. 00:33:42.80\00:33:45.02 It's not the sacrifices of lambs and goats and oxen. 00:33:45.05\00:33:48.39 It's based upon the promises of God; better promises 00:33:48.40\00:33:51.74 and a better person, better mediator. 00:33:51.77\00:33:55.29 It's Jesus, it's not a high priest. 00:33:55.32\00:33:57.33 And so, yes, we are living under the new covenant. 00:33:57.36\00:33:59.78 Now maybe it would be a good idea for us to 00:33:59.81\00:34:02.63 read the new covenant. 00:34:02.66\00:34:04.45 You can read here going on in Hebrews chapter 8. 00:34:05.97\00:34:10.34 He says, "Not according..." And this is in verse 9. 00:34:10.37\00:34:13.38 Oh, actually I want to read verse 8. 00:34:14.11\00:34:17.08 "For finding fault with them, He said..." 00:34:17.14\00:34:19.29 Now Pastor Barney, can you show me where in the Bible 00:34:25.92\00:34:29.81 God makes a covenant with Gentiles? 00:34:29.84\00:34:32.49 Hearing no answer, I'll assume there is none. 00:34:34.69\00:34:36.45 "And I will be their God and they will be My people." 00:34:58.51\00:35:00.44 You notice, it's based upon better promises. 00:35:00.47\00:35:03.25 These are the promises of God. 00:35:03.28\00:35:04.97 So the new covenant is what law? 00:35:05.58\00:35:09.65 It's the law of God that is written in the heart. 00:35:10.22\00:35:13.36 Wait a second, Pastor Doug. 00:35:14.62\00:35:15.98 You're trying to put these people under the bondage 00:35:17.77\00:35:20.22 of the Ten Commandments. 00:35:20.25\00:35:21.33 Yet Jesus came and He perfectly kept the commandments 00:35:21.36\00:35:24.10 because He was a Jew. 00:35:24.13\00:35:25.46 He kept it for all of us so we don't need to keep it. 00:35:25.49\00:35:28.07 Christ has fulfilled the law. 00:35:28.10\00:35:30.71 You all have heard that, haven't you? 00:35:31.95\00:35:33.38 Matthew chapter 5 verse 17. 00:35:34.21\00:35:38.15 Jesus said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the 00:35:39.38\00:35:42.36 law or the prophets. 00:35:42.39\00:35:43.58 I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." 00:35:43.61\00:35:46.91 Jesus came and fulfilled the law. 00:35:47.31\00:35:49.12 He kept it perfectly. 00:35:49.15\00:35:50.52 Christ said in John chapter 15, "I have kept My 00:35:50.55\00:35:54.21 Father's commandments." 00:35:54.24\00:35:55.38 So we don't need to keep the commandments because 00:35:55.41\00:35:57.40 we keep them through Him. 00:35:57.50\00:35:59.93 We don't need to keep them anymore because 00:36:00.34\00:36:01.79 He kept them for us. 00:36:01.82\00:36:03.13 He fulfilled the law. 00:36:03.16\00:36:04.31 So that, now it has been abolished and now we're 00:36:04.94\00:36:07.33 under the new covenant of the law. 00:36:07.36\00:36:09.49 Luke 16:16 00:36:09.52\00:36:11.10 Here it says, "The law and the prophets were until John." 00:36:11.30\00:36:15.38 Now if the law and the prophets were until John, 00:36:16.03\00:36:18.32 speaking of John the Baptist, then after John the Baptist 00:36:18.35\00:36:21.68 we're not under the law anymore. 00:36:21.71\00:36:24.28 Now we're under the new covenant, which is simply 00:36:24.91\00:36:27.90 based upon love. 00:36:27.93\00:36:29.14 And again, Galatians 3:19. 00:36:29.17\00:36:31.18 "What purpose then does the law serve? 00:36:31.74\00:36:34.32 It was added because of transgressions, 00:36:34.33\00:36:36.83 until the Seed should come." 00:36:36.86\00:36:38.34 Who is the Seed that it's talking about there? 00:36:38.37\00:36:41.32 The Seed of the woman from Genesis 3:15. 00:36:41.72\00:36:44.16 Jesus is that Seed. 00:36:44.19\00:36:45.83 So the law served a purpose until the Seed should come. 00:36:45.86\00:36:49.04 Jesus, the Seed, came and He kept the law perfectly, 00:36:49.34\00:36:52.94 He fulfilled it. 00:36:52.95\00:36:54.01 We don't need to keep the law anymore. 00:36:54.04\00:36:55.80 It has been fulfilled in Jesus. 00:36:55.81\00:36:57.77 I wish I had a quarter for every time I heard that. 00:36:59.67\00:37:02.10 Sorry, I should have changed sides when I said that. 00:37:02.86\00:37:04.74 And again Jesus said, "I have kept My Fathers commandments." 00:37:10.10\00:37:13.79 Now... 00:37:13.82\00:37:15.07 It's tough being bipolar. 00:37:17.02\00:37:18.64 I'm sorry. 00:37:19.04\00:37:20.05 It's easier for me than some people. 00:37:21.88\00:37:23.61 Alright, Pastor Barney, you didn't read the first part of 00:37:25.26\00:37:27.48 John chapter 15 verse 10. 00:37:27.49\00:37:29.93 Jesus said, "If you keep My commandments, you will 00:37:29.96\00:37:33.75 abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments 00:37:33.78\00:37:38.40 and abide in His love." 00:37:38.43\00:37:39.86 So how does Jesus want us to keep the commandments? 00:37:39.89\00:37:43.60 He said, "You keep the commandments as I have 00:37:43.92\00:37:47.21 kept the commandments." 00:37:47.24\00:37:48.47 Yes, Jesus did fulfill the law. 00:37:48.78\00:37:50.92 What does the word "fulfill" mean? 00:37:50.95\00:37:53.00 It means, to fill full. 00:37:53.49\00:37:55.56 Jesus, in His life, He filled it full. 00:37:55.59\00:37:57.86 The Bible prophesied in Isaiah that the Messiah would come, 00:37:57.89\00:38:00.67 He would magnify the law and make it honorable. 00:38:00.70\00:38:04.05 Yes, I would have to agree with you, Pastor Barney. 00:38:05.07\00:38:08.58 There has only been one person who has perfectly kept the law. 00:38:08.88\00:38:12.73 And that would be Jesus. 00:38:13.13\00:38:14.50 But after we are born again and we become new creatures, 00:38:14.80\00:38:17.91 He tells us that, "I want you to keep My commandments 00:38:18.54\00:38:21.62 as I kept the Father's commandments." 00:38:21.63\00:38:23.74 Pastor Doug, I've got to disagree with that. 00:38:25.50\00:38:27.22 He had different commandments. 00:38:28.83\00:38:30.59 He was talking about keeping the Father's commandments. 00:38:30.62\00:38:32.54 Yes, Jesus kept the ten. 00:38:32.57\00:38:33.80 But He said, "You keep My commandments." 00:38:33.83\00:38:35.61 Jesus had different commandments from the Father. 00:38:35.64\00:38:38.17 Pastor Barney, who wrote the Ten Commandments? 00:38:38.68\00:38:43.73 God did. 00:38:45.16\00:38:46.17 Who is Jesus? 00:38:48.05\00:38:49.42 He's God. 00:38:51.18\00:38:52.36 So who was up there on the mountain writing the 00:38:54.95\00:38:56.61 Ten Commandments? 00:38:56.64\00:38:57.89 Well that was God the Father. 00:38:58.88\00:39:00.35 Oh, I respectfully disagree. 00:39:01.92\00:39:03.61 The Bible says, "All things that were made were made by Him," 00:39:04.15\00:39:08.56 speaking of Jesus. 00:39:08.59\00:39:10.16 And that would include however He welded the Ten Commandments 00:39:10.19\00:39:13.65 out of that rock and burned the words in with His finger. 00:39:13.68\00:39:17.19 All things that were made were made by Him. 00:39:17.22\00:39:20.60 The law of Jesus is not different from the 00:39:20.98\00:39:23.84 Ten Commandments, because it was Jesus with the Father 00:39:23.87\00:39:26.58 delivering the law there on top of Mount Sinai. 00:39:26.61\00:39:29.28 No answer to that one. 00:39:35.12\00:39:36.45 Jesus' commandments are the Ten Commandments. 00:39:38.63\00:39:42.35 He never told us we could break the Ten commandments. 00:39:43.07\00:39:45.16 So what does it mean to fulfill the Ten Commandments? 00:39:45.17\00:39:47.92 You know, when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist... 00:39:48.31\00:39:50.83 You have to understand the word "fulfill". 00:39:50.86\00:39:52.76 Let the Bible explain itself. 00:39:52.79\00:39:55.41 You can read where He came down to the water 00:39:56.10\00:39:58.49 in Matthew chapter 3 verse 15. 00:39:58.52\00:40:00.90 John the Baptist recognized He was the Messiah, and 00:40:00.93\00:40:03.91 he said, "Wait a second here, You are the holy One of Israel. 00:40:03.92\00:40:08.26 You want me to baptize You? 00:40:08.88\00:40:10.46 Baptism is a symbol for washing away from sin. 00:40:10.49\00:40:13.09 You are sinless. 00:40:13.10\00:40:14.71 Why would I be baptizing You? 00:40:14.74\00:40:16.38 You need to baptize me." 00:40:16.41\00:40:18.35 And you remember what Jesus' answer was. 00:40:19.41\00:40:21.58 He said, "Suffer," or "allow it to be so now..." 00:40:22.34\00:40:26.05 Does "fulfill all righteousness" mean, do away with 00:40:31.92\00:40:36.44 all righteousness? 00:40:36.47\00:40:37.74 If the word "fulfill" means, do away with... 00:40:37.77\00:40:40.43 And the way some people interpret it is, 00:40:40.46\00:40:42.37 Christ came to fulfill the law, and they think that means 00:40:42.40\00:40:45.11 Christ came to do away with the law. 00:40:45.14\00:40:47.54 But listen to what Jesus says in Matthew chapter 5 00:40:48.43\00:40:51.00 verses 18 and 19. 00:40:51.03\00:40:52.61 You've got to keep reading. 00:41:04.17\00:41:05.89 And keep in mind He had just been mentioning 00:41:10.51\00:41:12.74 the Ten Commandments in the sermon on the mount. 00:41:12.77\00:41:14.81 "One of these least" means, as you look through the 00:41:16.93\00:41:18.27 Ten Commandments, you can figure to yourself 00:41:18.30\00:41:20.92 whichever one you think is the least important. 00:41:20.93\00:41:23.30 Jesus said, "Whoever shall break the least 00:41:24.36\00:41:27.54 and teach others to break the least, he will be called 00:41:27.57\00:41:31.49 the least in the kingdom of heaven." 00:41:31.52\00:41:33.26 Now this is often misunderstood. 00:41:33.29\00:41:34.94 It doesn't mean he'll be in the kingdom but he's just 00:41:34.97\00:41:37.42 going to have a lower rank. 00:41:37.45\00:41:38.79 It means, the people in the kingdom call that person 00:41:38.82\00:41:42.15 the lowest individual. 00:41:42.18\00:41:44.47 They're not in the kingdom. 00:41:44.50\00:41:45.59 But the people in the kingdom call them, the lowest. 00:41:45.62\00:41:48.58 Whoever will teach others to break the Ten Commandments, 00:41:48.61\00:41:51.99 and by their example break the Ten Commandments... 00:41:52.02\00:41:54.55 What is sin? 00:41:55.36\00:41:56.77 Sin is the transgression of God's law. 00:41:57.32\00:41:59.45 And that's why it is a very serious matter 00:41:59.48\00:42:02.95 for pastors to be teaching people they don't need to 00:42:02.98\00:42:05.90 keep the Ten Commandments. 00:42:05.91\00:42:07.57 That's a serious, that's a frightening thing. 00:42:08.23\00:42:10.75 Jesus came to save us from our law breaking. 00:42:10.78\00:42:14.11 Let me take a little detour here. 00:42:14.14\00:42:16.26 I apologize to the studio. 00:42:16.29\00:42:18.50 This is not going to be on the screen, at least not right away. 00:42:18.53\00:42:21.40 If you look in 2 Peter chapter 3... 00:42:21.43\00:42:24.75 I'm using a new Bible for this presentation, 00:42:26.22\00:42:28.56 so the pages turn a little different. 00:42:28.59\00:42:30.45 2 Peter chapter 3 and you can start in verse 15. 00:42:32.16\00:42:41.15 Just make a note of this. 00:42:41.18\00:42:42.67 "And consider that the longsuffering of our Lord 00:42:43.33\00:42:46.19 is salvation, as also our beloved brother Paul, 00:42:46.20\00:42:49.41 according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 00:42:49.44\00:42:52.18 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them..." 00:42:52.21\00:42:56.18 Now Peter is talking about the epistles of Paul. 00:42:56.21\00:42:58.74 "...speaking in them of these things, in which are some 00:42:58.77\00:43:03.91 things hard to understand..." 00:43:03.92\00:43:05.42 In Paul's letters, epistles, are some things hard to understand. 00:43:05.72\00:43:09.56 "...which those who are untaught and unstable twist to their 00:43:09.59\00:43:14.37 own destruction, as they do the rest of the Scriptures. 00:43:14.38\00:43:17.31 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, 00:43:18.02\00:43:20.41 beware lest you also fall from your steadfastness, 00:43:20.44\00:43:23.54 being led away with the error of the wicked." 00:43:23.57\00:43:25.77 And the work "wicked" there can also be translated "lawless". 00:43:25.78\00:43:29.67 What that means very simply is, you look, make a note; 00:43:30.08\00:43:33.90 virtually every time any pastor tries to say that you don't 00:43:33.91\00:43:39.24 need to keep the Ten Commandments when you're 00:43:39.25\00:43:40.88 a born again New Testament Christian, they'll turn to the 00:43:40.91\00:43:43.66 letters of Paul that Peter says some people twist. 00:43:43.69\00:43:46.66 Because Paul said some difficult things because he was 00:43:46.86\00:43:49.71 dealing with legalistic Jews. 00:43:49.74\00:43:52.03 It's real easy to understand James. 00:43:52.40\00:43:54.40 But Paul was pretty deep at times. 00:43:54.80\00:43:57.00 But it's also Paul who said, Romans chapter 6, 00:43:57.60\00:44:01.13 "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 00:44:01.16\00:44:04.47 God forbid, certainly not." 00:44:04.50\00:44:07.10 So Paul was clear enough. 00:44:07.55\00:44:09.28 But you've got to read all of it together, because a person can 00:44:09.31\00:44:12.14 hand pick things out of the writings of Paul 00:44:12.17\00:44:14.55 and be led to believe that it's no longer important 00:44:14.58\00:44:17.20 for us to keep the Ten Commandments. 00:44:17.23\00:44:19.14 I know I'm not giving you equal time. 00:44:20.33\00:44:21.58 I'm sorry, but just bear with me here. 00:44:21.61\00:44:23.26 Maybe I will give you some more time here. 00:44:26.59\00:44:28.03 Oh yea, let me read Ephesians 3:19. 00:44:29.02\00:44:31.46 "For you know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; 00:44:31.49\00:44:34.88 that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." 00:44:34.89\00:44:38.47 We were talking a moment ago about what it 00:44:38.50\00:44:40.48 means to fulfill the law. 00:44:40.51\00:44:41.80 The Bible tells us that He wants us to be full of Christ. 00:44:42.06\00:44:45.34 So if Jesus in His life fulfilled the law, and if you 00:44:45.37\00:44:49.35 are filled with Christ, then will we in our lives 00:44:49.38\00:44:53.79 be more obedient to God? 00:44:53.82\00:44:56.01 What's the difference between Christians 00:44:56.83\00:44:58.74 and the people of the world? 00:44:58.75\00:44:59.77 It's not like that bumper sticker that says, 00:44:59.80\00:45:01.65 "We are just forgiven." 00:45:01.68\00:45:03.60 A lot of the problems people struggle with are sin problems. 00:45:04.12\00:45:07.87 And we need God to give us victory over our sins. 00:45:07.90\00:45:11.05 Christians need to be hearing today that we can be 00:45:11.08\00:45:14.87 new creatures, that we can obey. 00:45:14.88\00:45:17.32 Pastor Doug, I believe in obedience also. 00:45:18.28\00:45:21.47 But you've got to make sure that we're talking about 00:45:21.93\00:45:23.84 obeying the right commandments. 00:45:23.85\00:45:25.56 Jesus gave us a new commandment. 00:45:25.59\00:45:28.34 Let me read that for you. John 13 verse 34. 00:45:28.37\00:45:32.51 It's very simple, there are only two commandments 00:45:32.97\00:45:34.77 now for the Christian. 00:45:34.80\00:45:36.08 We're led by the Spirit. 00:45:36.11\00:45:37.70 He said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you 00:45:38.67\00:45:42.27 love one another; as I have loved you, 00:45:42.28\00:45:44.88 that you also love one another." 00:45:44.91\00:45:46.66 So the Ten Commandments are replaced with a supreme 00:45:47.26\00:45:50.51 commandment of God in you; just love. 00:45:50.54\00:45:53.28 Don't walk around worrying about the letter 00:45:53.31\00:45:55.52 and the details of the law. 00:45:55.55\00:45:56.89 Just love each other. 00:45:56.92\00:45:58.03 Matthew 22 verse 37, Jesus said: 00:45:59.03\00:46:01.90 The Ten Commandments have been hung, just like some ole cowboy 00:46:17.87\00:46:23.25 that was rustling horses or something. 00:46:23.28\00:46:25.17 It's hung. 00:46:25.20\00:46:26.22 All of that was hung on two commandments now; 00:46:26.95\00:46:29.70 love the Lord and love your neighbor. 00:46:29.73\00:46:31.83 Pastor Barney, that's not what it means when it says, 00:46:33.55\00:46:37.25 "on these two commandments hang the law and the prophet." 00:46:37.28\00:46:39.82 The word "hang" there means, like you take a Mona Lisa 00:46:39.85\00:46:42.97 in your house and you put a nail in the wall, 00:46:43.00\00:46:45.67 and you hang it up in a position of respect and visibility. 00:46:45.70\00:46:50.91 So the idea that the Ten Commandments have been 00:46:51.54\00:46:53.62 strangled by the love for God and love for your fellow man 00:46:53.65\00:46:57.71 is actually the opposite. 00:46:57.74\00:46:59.77 Those two great commandments are a summary of the 00:47:00.40\00:47:04.22 Ten Commandments. 00:47:04.25\00:47:05.67 Paul, of all people, makes that clear. 00:47:06.11\00:47:08.66 Romans chapter 13 verse 9, Paul said: 00:47:08.69\00:47:12.65 What is Paul quoting from there? 00:47:25.12\00:47:26.68 It's the Ten Commandments. 00:47:27.26\00:47:28.59 "...and if there be any other..." 00:47:28.62\00:47:30.35 Just to have space because, you know, the second commandment, 00:47:30.38\00:47:33.26 you write it all out, and the fourth commandment, 00:47:33.29\00:47:34.69 they're the two longest. 00:47:34.72\00:47:35.83 So Paul, you know, back then with leather scrolls 00:47:35.86\00:47:38.52 and ink pens, he's just trying to be concise. 00:47:38.55\00:47:41.15 He's quoting the Ten Commandments. 00:47:41.18\00:47:43.00 And he said, "... and if there is any other commandment, 00:47:43.03\00:47:45.50 it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, 00:47:45.53\00:47:50.04 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.'" 00:47:50.05\00:47:53.33 In other words, when Jesus said, "Love the Lord 00:47:53.34\00:47:56.28 with all your heart," and, "love your neighbor," 00:47:56.29\00:47:58.67 you can summarize all of the Ten Commandments 00:47:58.70\00:48:01.61 into those two commandments. 00:48:01.64\00:48:03.76 It doesn't mean that there's some difference there. 00:48:04.12\00:48:07.87 They're the same. 00:48:07.90\00:48:08.94 Jesus just summarized it, made it clear. 00:48:08.97\00:48:11.19 Mark chapter 10 verse 19. 00:48:11.22\00:48:13.33 A rich young ruler came to Jesus, and He said: 00:48:14.79\00:48:18.54 You remember, he came to Jesus and he said, "Good Master, 00:48:28.83\00:48:30.85 what good thing shall I do that I might have eternal life?" 00:48:30.88\00:48:33.50 What was it that Christ said to him? 00:48:33.53\00:48:35.29 "You know the commandments." 00:48:35.30\00:48:37.06 And he said, "Which?" 00:48:37.09\00:48:38.69 And Jesus began to recite the Ten Commandments. 00:48:39.03\00:48:41.89 Now I should probably make something clear at this point. 00:48:42.27\00:48:44.92 There are like 300 commandments, someone has calculated, 00:48:44.95\00:48:48.38 in the Old Testament that the Jews had. 00:48:48.41\00:48:50.47 It depends on which rabbi you're talking to. 00:48:51.66\00:48:53.67 There are a lot of commandments that had to do with 00:48:53.70\00:48:55.80 Levitical regulations and with sacrifices and with circumcision 00:48:55.83\00:48:59.77 and with the temple and its ceremonies. 00:48:59.80\00:49:02.56 And there were civil laws and there were health laws 00:49:02.59\00:49:05.12 and there were social laws. 00:49:05.15\00:49:07.10 All kinds of different laws. 00:49:07.13\00:49:08.79 But those laws are different and distinct from the 00:49:08.82\00:49:12.83 Ten Commandments. 00:49:12.86\00:49:13.88 Not because I say so, but God said so. 00:49:13.91\00:49:17.47 When God gave the Ten Commandments, 00:49:17.89\00:49:19.69 did He do something unique and different than He had ever done 00:49:19.70\00:49:22.63 at any other time? 00:49:22.66\00:49:23.81 Did He ask Moses to do it, or did God say, 00:49:24.17\00:49:27.44 "I am not even trusting this to a mortal. 00:49:27.47\00:49:29.72 I'm getting My microphone and I am going to speak audibly 00:49:29.75\00:49:32.88 to the entire nation. 00:49:32.91\00:49:34.15 They're going to hear My voice. 00:49:34.18\00:49:36.13 And I'm going to take My finger and I'm going to write it 00:49:36.41\00:49:38.74 down with My own paper and My own..." 00:49:38.77\00:49:41.79 Well it was a rock, stone. 00:49:41.82\00:49:43.93 "...and with My own finger, so there is never any confusion." 00:49:43.96\00:49:48.13 And when God does something like that, you can 00:49:48.76\00:49:50.50 count on it being eternal. 00:49:50.53\00:49:52.43 The Ten Commandments, God set apart and made 00:49:52.46\00:49:55.20 unique and distinct. 00:49:55.23\00:49:56.79 And by the way, Pastor Barney, virtually every evangelical 00:49:56.82\00:50:02.62 and Christian preacher from the time of Christ 00:50:02.65\00:50:05.44 through the reformation believed what I'm saying right now 00:50:05.47\00:50:08.39 until the last 120 years. 00:50:08.42\00:50:11.36 As a matter of fact, Seventh-day Adventists 00:50:11.39\00:50:12.85 have been the means of some churches changing their position 00:50:12.88\00:50:17.06 because they've been uncomfortable with 00:50:17.09\00:50:18.82 one of the commandments, so they had to get rid of all ten. 00:50:18.85\00:50:22.17 I was doing some research and preparation for this series 00:50:24.41\00:50:27.14 and I just typed in on the internet, 00:50:27.92\00:50:29.71 "Do we need to keep the Ten Commandments?" 00:50:30.59\00:50:32.44 And I began reading some pastor expounding on it. 00:50:33.38\00:50:36.17 It must be popular, it popped up on one of the first pages. 00:50:36.20\00:50:38.76 Talking about how important it is to keep the Ten Commandments. 00:50:39.89\00:50:42.06 And I thought, this is beautiful. 00:50:42.09\00:50:43.41 And then I got to the bottom of the list and it said, 00:50:43.44\00:50:45.56 "Of course, there is an exception with the 00:50:45.59\00:50:47.77 fourth commandment regarding the Sabbath." 00:50:47.78\00:50:50.20 And that's why there has been so much squirming over 00:50:52.57\00:50:55.08 the subject of the law. 00:50:55.11\00:50:56.23 And that's why I thought it was important during this first 00:50:56.26\00:50:58.56 presentation to talk about, how do we deal with the law. 00:50:58.76\00:51:03.52 Now we've all sinned, we've all broken the law. 00:51:04.37\00:51:07.30 And it's only through the grace of Jesus that any of us are 00:51:07.33\00:51:10.37 going to make it into the kingdom. 00:51:10.40\00:51:11.64 But He doesn't save us to disobey. 00:51:11.67\00:51:14.59 He came to save us from our sins, from our lawlessness. 00:51:15.23\00:51:19.34 Well, Pastor Doug, the Ten Commandments are a burden. 00:51:20.10\00:51:28.10 And you are putting a burden on these people. 00:51:28.13\00:51:30.92 Pastor Barney, which commandment is an in particular 00:51:32.73\00:51:35.09 burden to you? 00:51:35.10\00:51:36.15 Well, it's all works oriented. 00:51:41.68\00:51:43.59 You talk about, you know, have to keep the Sabbath. 00:51:43.62\00:51:45.20 It's just works, works, works. 00:51:45.23\00:51:46.64 Pastor Barney, the Sabbath says to rest. 00:51:48.46\00:51:50.12 I'm telling them to rest, you're telling them to work. 00:51:50.15\00:51:51.99 You're the one who's putting them under a burden. 00:51:52.02\00:51:53.73 That was a low blow. 00:51:55.54\00:51:56.71 I want to go back over here and give him a fair shot. 00:51:58.47\00:52:01.08 Now it does say something about that. 00:52:02.35\00:52:04.77 He said, the Ten Commandments, it can seem like a burden. 00:52:05.48\00:52:09.60 Acts chapter 15 verse 10. 00:52:09.63\00:52:11.23 The law is a yoke, it's a burden. 00:52:21.36\00:52:22.99 And we're not to be putting that on the disciples. 00:52:23.02\00:52:25.57 I don't have a problem with that because that was dealing with 00:52:26.54\00:52:29.12 a lot of the ceremonial laws that were a burden. 00:52:29.15\00:52:31.69 But they never gave them permission in the New Testament 00:52:31.72\00:52:33.85 to break the Ten Commandments. 00:52:33.88\00:52:35.82 Stop interrupting. It's my turn. 00:52:36.86\00:52:38.28 Galatians chapter 4 verse 24. 00:52:39.12\00:52:41.37 "...which things are symbolic. 00:52:41.77\00:52:43.83 For these are the two covenants: one is from Mount Sinai 00:52:43.86\00:52:47.45 which gives birth to bondage..." 00:52:47.48\00:52:49.38 Now who can disagree? 00:52:49.41\00:52:50.45 What law was given on Mount Sinai? 00:52:50.48\00:52:52.20 The Ten Commandments. 00:52:53.19\00:52:54.40 Giving birth to, what? To bondage. 00:52:54.43\00:52:57.10 "...which is Hagar." 00:52:58.78\00:53:00.07 So, Pastor Doug, do you believe anybody has 00:53:00.88\00:53:03.71 been able to keep the Ten Commandments perfectly? 00:53:03.74\00:53:06.35 Just one person. 00:53:08.54\00:53:09.90 That's Jesus, right? 00:53:11.69\00:53:13.04 That's right, He's the only one. 00:53:14.08\00:53:15.36 So then, why are you telling people now that they are 00:53:16.48\00:53:19.10 suppose to keep it, since we have all acknowledged that 00:53:19.13\00:53:21.15 nobody is keeping it perfectly? 00:53:21.16\00:53:22.74 I believe that there are some who, through the grace of God, 00:53:23.91\00:53:26.82 were able then to become obedient. 00:53:26.83\00:53:29.83 There are a few that are given, here in the Bible, 00:53:30.91\00:53:33.34 at least an honorable mention. 00:53:33.84\00:53:35.99 You can read, for instance, Genesis chapter 6 verse 9. 00:53:36.80\00:53:39.75 "This is the genealogy of Noah. 00:53:40.04\00:53:42.39 Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. 00:53:42.42\00:53:45.76 Noah walked with God." 00:53:45.79\00:53:47.37 Now I know he had that episode with the vineyard 00:53:47.38\00:53:49.32 and a problem there. 00:53:49.35\00:53:50.68 But the consistent pattern of his life was one of; 00:53:50.71\00:53:53.40 just and obedient, walked with God. 00:53:53.43\00:53:56.16 Genesis 26 verse 5. 00:53:56.19\00:53:59.72 "Because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, 00:54:00.61\00:54:05.06 My commandments, My statutes, and My laws." 00:54:05.09\00:54:09.19 And I was actually surprised you did not bring up that 00:54:09.22\00:54:11.88 objection by saying the Ten Commandments 00:54:11.91\00:54:14.10 began at Mount Sinai and were just for the Jews. 00:54:14.13\00:54:16.44 Okay, I want to use that one. 00:54:17.83\00:54:19.32 I'm saying that. 00:54:19.33\00:54:21.12 Well the problem with that is, Abraham lived before the 00:54:22.18\00:54:24.25 Ten Commandments were given. 00:54:24.28\00:54:25.40 And God says He has laws and commandments long before Moses 00:54:25.43\00:54:28.96 came around and God spoke them from the mountain. 00:54:28.99\00:54:31.90 Job 1:1, "There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; 00:54:32.45\00:54:36.82 and that man was blameless and upright, and one who 00:54:36.83\00:54:40.23 feared God and shunned evil." 00:54:40.26\00:54:42.18 So whatever that means, however obedient these guys were, 00:54:42.21\00:54:45.46 that's how I want to be. 00:54:45.49\00:54:46.84 Pastor Doug, you notice that you just read all those verses 00:54:47.45\00:54:50.72 from the Old Testament. 00:54:50.73\00:54:52.02 That was the Old Testament people and they were 00:54:52.05\00:54:55.16 trying to be saved by works. 00:54:55.19\00:54:56.29 We're now living in the New Testament time. 00:54:56.32\00:54:58.37 We are saved by grace. 00:54:58.40\00:54:59.94 Well here's one from the New testament. 00:55:00.70\00:55:02.28 You can read it in Luke 1 verse 6, 00:55:03.33\00:55:05.33 speaking of Zacharias and Elizabeth. 00:55:05.36\00:55:07.57 "And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the 00:55:07.60\00:55:11.62 commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless." 00:55:11.63\00:55:15.74 So whatever they did, that's all I'm praying for that God will 00:55:16.05\00:55:19.11 do in me and for me, to give me that experience 00:55:19.12\00:55:21.76 where I can walk before the Lord. 00:55:21.79\00:55:23.45 Pastor Doug, you keep referring to these people that existed 00:55:24.74\00:55:26.87 before Jesus died on the cross. 00:55:26.90\00:55:29.19 Zacharias and Elizabeth were Jews. 00:55:29.22\00:55:31.14 Pastor Barney, you know, I can't understand why you have such a 00:55:32.11\00:55:34.54 problem with there being a different of salvation 00:55:34.57\00:55:36.85 for the Jews than there is for New Testament Christians. 00:55:36.88\00:55:40.88 Do you believe that God has two different kinds of salvation 00:55:41.18\00:55:44.06 or is everybody saved under the new covenant? 00:55:44.09\00:55:46.49 Well, there's two different dispensations. 00:55:47.35\00:55:49.09 You've got the Gentile dispensation and salvation, 00:55:49.12\00:55:51.77 and then you've got the Jewish dispensation and salvation. 00:55:51.80\00:55:54.87 You keep quoting from the Jewish dispensation 00:55:54.90\00:55:57.22 and trying to put that burden on these dear people here. 00:55:57.25\00:55:59.88 We're Gentiles and we're under the new covenant now. 00:55:59.91\00:56:03.12 Alright, Pastor Barney, you plan to go to heaven some day. 00:56:04.06\00:56:06.88 Absolutely, yes I do. 00:56:07.48\00:56:08.99 And I hope I see you there, because I am not going to 00:56:09.19\00:56:12.39 get there without you because we're the same person. 00:56:12.42\00:56:13.91 But here's the problem that you're going to have. 00:56:16.27\00:56:18.42 The New Jerusalem is built on twelve foundations that have 00:56:20.25\00:56:23.60 the names of the twelve Jewish apostles. 00:56:23.63\00:56:26.78 And the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem 00:56:27.99\00:56:30.20 have the names of the twelve tribes. 00:56:30.23\00:56:32.92 Please tell me, where is the Gentile gate? 00:56:33.22\00:56:35.87 Well, one of them might have been a Gentile. 00:56:39.42\00:56:42.79 No, Pastor Barney, all the sons of Israel were Jewish. 00:56:44.77\00:56:48.28 There is no Gentile gate. 00:56:49.03\00:56:50.51 That's why the new covenant is made with people who 00:56:50.54\00:56:53.79 become spiritual Jews. 00:56:53.80\00:56:55.76 And we are all grafted into that olive tree. 00:56:56.21\00:56:58.94 God doesn't have two different kinds of salvation. 00:56:58.95\00:57:01.46 So here's the big question, friends. 00:57:02.89\00:57:05.03 Would we want to willfully sin, or does God want to 00:57:05.91\00:57:09.80 save us from our sins? 00:57:09.83\00:57:11.54 Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." 00:57:12.10\00:57:16.14 We want to ask the question, is it possible for us to be 00:57:16.54\00:57:19.28 new creatures and to be transformed by the grace of God? 00:57:19.31\00:57:22.88 I believe it is, friends. 00:57:23.36\00:57:25.00 And I want to make a special appeal to each one of you. 00:57:25.03\00:57:28.86 Believe that God can give you a new heart, 00:57:28.89\00:57:30.96 that's the new covenant, 00:57:30.97\00:57:32.10 and help you to be, not only a hearer, but a doer of the law. 00:57:32.13\00:57:35.74 Yes, we've all sinned. 00:57:36.16\00:57:37.39 And God sent His Son to save us from our sins 00:57:37.84\00:57:40.79 so that we can be new creatures with new hearts, 00:57:40.82\00:57:44.24 and be transformed by His power. 00:57:44.64\00:57:46.82 And that's our appeal for each one of you. 00:57:46.85\00:57:48.57 We've got a lot more to talk about. 00:57:48.60\00:57:49.91 So we pray you'll continue to tune in for this special series 00:57:49.94\00:57:53.35 dealing with doctrines that divide. 00:57:53.38\00:57:55.66 We'll cover more in our next presentation. 00:57:55.69\00:57:58.16
