Welcome to Anchors Of Truth live from the 3ABN worship center. 00:00:12.76\00:00:17.34 Thriving Faith In Difficult Times, with Jim Gilley. 00:00:17.37\00:00:21.32 When I pastored in New York City, I had a 00:00:23.23\00:00:25.50 member of my church who lived in a building with 3000 apartments. 00:00:25.53\00:00:30.84 She lived in a building that had several sections. 00:00:30.87\00:00:33.61 An A section, a B section, a C section, a D section, 00:00:33.64\00:00:37.05 an E section, and an F section. 00:00:37.08\00:00:39.50 Each section had 27 floors. 00:00:39.53\00:00:42.12 And she lived in B27D. 00:00:42.13\00:00:45.26 3000 apartments in one building. 00:00:45.29\00:00:47.94 There are how many people in Thompsonville? 00:00:47.97\00:00:49.62 Six hundred? 00:00:49.65\00:00:50.65 3000 apartments in one building. 00:00:51.05\00:00:53.18 And she told me, "Pastor, you know, I use to live 00:00:53.58\00:00:56.19 in the country all by myself. 00:00:56.22\00:00:58.13 But I got scared and nervous and worried in the country. 00:00:58.53\00:01:01.20 So I moved to the city. 00:01:01.23\00:01:02.47 Now I live in a building with 3000 apartments 00:01:02.50\00:01:05.59 and I'm worried. 00:01:05.62\00:01:06.69 I wish I was back in the country." 00:01:06.72\00:01:08.49 She said, "In the morning, I wish it was night. 00:01:08.52\00:01:11.05 At night, I wish it was morning. 00:01:11.08\00:01:12.85 When I get on the subway, there's 10,000 people 00:01:12.88\00:01:15.91 on the subway and I don't know any of them. 00:01:15.94\00:01:17.21 I wish I had my own car. 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.67 But when I had my own car, I was afraid to drive 00:01:18.70\00:01:20.80 in New York City, so I gave up my car to 00:01:20.83\00:01:22.88 get on the subway." 00:01:22.91\00:01:23.97 She said, "I'm afraid of my neighbors who I don't know. 00:01:24.00\00:01:26.30 I'm afraid of my family who I rarely see. 00:01:26.33\00:01:28.51 I'm afraid to go to the store. 00:01:28.54\00:01:30.11 I'm afraid to eat things that I don't know what's in them." 00:01:30.14\00:01:32.32 She said, "I'm just afraid all the time." 00:01:32.35\00:01:34.71 And you know, she's not alone. 00:01:35.71\00:01:37.35 There's a lot of fear in this world. 00:01:37.38\00:01:39.64 And we learned about fear as Pastor Gilley talked about fear 00:01:40.10\00:01:43.05 on last evening. 00:01:43.08\00:01:44.27 But we also learned that wonderful text in 1 John 4:18, 00:01:44.30\00:01:47.42 that perfect love does what to fear? 00:01:47.45\00:01:49.58 It casts out fear. 00:01:49.98\00:01:51.36 Perfect love gives us trust in Jesus, who we know 00:01:51.39\00:01:55.34 controls this world of ours. 00:01:55.37\00:01:57.52 My name is C.A. Murray and it is my privilege and pleasure to 00:01:57.55\00:02:00.69 welcome to you night number two in our Anchors Of Faith series. 00:02:00.72\00:02:03.86 Tonight, Jim Gilley is going to talk about worry; 00:02:04.06\00:02:08.45 how not to worry, how to trust in God. 00:02:08.48\00:02:11.46 And as we said before, this is not the 2300 days, 00:02:11.49\00:02:15.69 this is not Bible prophecy, this is not Revelation 13. 00:02:15.72\00:02:20.35 What this is, it's practical religion and godliness. 00:02:20.38\00:02:23.95 This is putting feet on your faith. 00:02:23.98\00:02:26.10 This is how to deal with those things that we as Christians 00:02:26.13\00:02:29.09 deal with every single day of our lives; 00:02:29.12\00:02:31.47 worry, fear, anger, disappointment. 00:02:31.57\00:02:35.10 How do we do that? 00:02:35.13\00:02:36.28 How do we face these kinds of issues and remain Christian 00:02:36.31\00:02:41.20 and keep our faith strong in Jesus? 00:02:41.23\00:02:42.96 And so Jim Gilley, as a preacher of the Word, as an Evangelist, 00:02:42.99\00:02:47.32 as a conference president, as a North American Division 00:02:47.35\00:02:50.36 executive, has had much experience in 00:02:50.39\00:02:53.22 talking about these issues. 00:02:53.25\00:02:55.14 And we are quite sure that God will bless him this 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.81 very night as he talks about and tells us about how not to worry, 00:02:57.84\00:03:02.79 but rather how to trust in God. 00:03:02.82\00:03:04.87 I didn't mention on last evening, his wife is 00:03:05.17\00:03:07.69 right here by his side. 00:03:07.72\00:03:08.79 Camille Gilley is with us, always stands by his side. 00:03:08.80\00:03:11.21 He is the father of four, grandfather of nine, I am told. 00:03:11.24\00:03:15.53 And a proud grandfather indeed. 00:03:15.56\00:03:17.39 But for tonight, he is not husband, he is not father, 00:03:17.40\00:03:21.46 he is not grandfather. 00:03:21.49\00:03:23.25 He is preacher and teacher of the Word. 00:03:23.28\00:03:25.88 He is the one that Christ will use to bring us the Word. 00:03:25.91\00:03:29.02 And I ask for him from you, your prayerful 00:03:29.05\00:03:33.35 and undivided attention. 00:03:33.38\00:03:34.64 Before he speaks, Yvonne Lewis will bring us the music. 00:03:34.67\00:03:38.26 And before she sings, we will go to the Lord in prayer. 00:03:38.29\00:03:42.02 Shall we pray. 00:03:42.12\00:03:43.16 Father God, we thank You so very much for the 00:03:43.19\00:03:47.18 privilege of prayer. 00:03:47.21\00:03:49.26 We thank Thee that on the other side of our prayers 00:03:49.86\00:03:52.35 is a God who listens, who hears, who is ready, willing, 00:03:52.38\00:03:55.53 and able to answer. 00:03:55.56\00:03:56.69 And Lord, this night we ask from You for Jim Gilley 00:03:57.10\00:04:01.47 heavens very best. 00:04:01.50\00:04:03.49 We know that he has spent time with You. 00:04:03.52\00:04:06.64 We know that he has a word from You. 00:04:06.67\00:04:09.46 And so we ask that You will empower him, embolden him, 00:04:09.49\00:04:13.52 anoint him to speak that word with power. 00:04:13.55\00:04:16.86 And give us who listen, here in this house and those 00:04:16.89\00:04:20.89 around the world, listening ears, attentive hearts, 00:04:20.90\00:04:25.58 open minds, that we may hear, receive, and do Your will 00:04:25.61\00:04:31.07 for our lives as together we take just one more step 00:04:31.08\00:04:37.36 along the road that leads to glory. 00:04:37.39\00:04:41.36 We love You, praise You, and thank You for Your promise 00:04:41.39\00:04:44.64 to hear and answer the prayer of faith. 00:04:44.67\00:04:46.52 In Jesus' name. 00:04:46.55\00:04:48.82 And now, Jim Gilley. 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.76 But before him, Yvonne Lewis. 00:04:50.79\00:04:54.11 In Christ alone my hope is found 00:05:14.40\00:05:20.28 He is my light, my strength, my song 00:05:20.31\00:05:25.24 This Cornerstone, this solid ground 00:05:25.27\00:05:30.46 Firm through the fiercest drought and storm 00:05:30.49\00:05:35.77 What heights of love, what depths of peace 00:05:35.78\00:05:40.92 When fears are stilled, when strivings cease 00:05:40.95\00:05:46.21 My Comforter, my All in All 00:05:46.24\00:05:51.47 Here in the love of Christ I stand 00:05:51.50\00:05:58.47 In Christ alone, who took on flesh 00:06:04.09\00:06:09.64 Fullness of God in helpless Babe 00:06:09.67\00:06:14.42 This gift of love and righteousness 00:06:14.45\00:06:20.11 Scorned by the ones He came to save 00:06:20.14\00:06:25.09 Till on that cross as Jesus died 00:06:25.12\00:06:30.52 The wrath of God was satisfied 00:06:30.55\00:06:35.41 For every sin on Him was laid 00:06:35.42\00:06:41.08 Here in the death of Christ I live 00:06:41.11\00:06:47.99 There in the ground His body lay 00:07:06.83\00:07:12.34 Light of the world by darkness slain 00:07:12.37\00:07:17.28 Then bursting forth in glorious Day 00:07:17.31\00:07:22.86 Up from the grave He rose again 00:07:22.89\00:07:27.44 And as He stands in victory 00:07:27.47\00:07:32.88 Sin's curse has lost its grip on me 00:07:32.91\00:07:38.20 For I am His and He is mine 00:07:38.23\00:07:43.58 Bought with the precious blood of Christ 00:07:43.59\00:07:50.94 No guilt in life, no fear in death 00:07:56.39\00:08:02.09 This is the power of Christ in me 00:08:02.12\00:08:06.92 From a life's first cry to final breath 00:08:06.95\00:08:12.32 Jesus commands my destiny 00:08:12.33\00:08:17.19 No power of hell, no scheme of man 00:08:17.22\00:08:22.60 Could ever pluck me from His hand 00:08:22.61\00:08:30.49 Till He returns to take me home 00:08:30.52\00:08:35.70 Here in the power of Christ I stand 00:08:35.73\00:08:40.81 No power of hell, no scheme of man 00:08:40.84\00:08:45.99 Can ever pluck me from His hand 00:08:46.02\00:08:52.97 Here in the power 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.31 of Christ I stand 00:08:59.34\00:09:09.31 Here in the power of Christ I stand. 00:09:21.89\00:09:26.73 No other way, only in Jesus. 00:09:27.43\00:09:29.73 Only through Him. 00:09:29.76\00:09:30.82 Let us pray. 00:09:30.85\00:09:31.92 Father in heaven, tonight we pray that as we 00:09:31.95\00:09:34.83 look at this subject, that we will focus on Jesus. 00:09:34.86\00:09:38.37 He is the way, He is the truth, He is the life. 00:09:39.03\00:09:42.09 Oh Father, speak, we pray, through us to Your people. 00:09:42.52\00:09:48.75 Thank You for hearing this prayer. 00:09:49.34\00:09:53.11 In Jesus' wonderful and powerful and loving name, amen. 00:09:53.14\00:09:58.62 You know, the Bible talks about worry. 00:09:59.88\00:10:02.26 This is not a subject that is only for our day. 00:10:02.85\00:10:06.88 It has always been there. 00:10:06.91\00:10:08.94 It is something that all of us have struggled with 00:10:09.61\00:10:14.01 from time to time. 00:10:14.04\00:10:15.68 There is absolutely no question about that. 00:10:16.16\00:10:20.02 Sometimes we come to some of these subjects, 00:10:20.38\00:10:22.32 as I mentioned last night, and people get the idea that 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.17 we're talking about psychology or we're talking about that. 00:10:25.20\00:10:27.72 No, we are looking at a Biblical subject 00:10:27.75\00:10:31.49 from a Biblical standpoint that applies to our lives today. 00:10:31.52\00:10:36.54 We're living in difficult times. 00:10:37.01\00:10:39.14 As we watch the news and... 00:10:39.88\00:10:41.67 I have to confess that I am a bit of a news junkie 00:10:41.97\00:10:45.66 and I watch a lot of news. 00:10:45.69\00:10:48.50 I don't really watch much else, but I do watch the news. 00:10:48.63\00:10:52.18 And I will tell you right now, when you see the US Senators 00:10:52.21\00:10:57.34 of this country that are exasperated to the point 00:10:57.37\00:11:01.02 where they say they do not see an answer to this, 00:11:01.05\00:11:05.08 that our debt situation continues to grow, 00:11:05.11\00:11:08.19 that in a very few years, about seven years, 00:11:08.22\00:11:11.01 it will come to the place where it equals our whole 00:11:11.04\00:11:15.42 national gross product. 00:11:15.45\00:11:18.10 I mean, this is a total bankrupt situation. 00:11:19.26\00:11:22.99 And it has to be turned around. 00:11:23.32\00:11:25.18 And there seems to be no way to turn it around. 00:11:25.21\00:11:27.73 You see, that makes it a serious situation. 00:11:28.87\00:11:31.70 When we look at the end times, 00:11:32.17\00:11:34.33 and I believe that we're in the end times, 00:11:34.36\00:11:36.12 I think we're right at the beginning of the end times, 00:11:36.15\00:11:39.12 the question comes, how do I make it through? 00:11:39.15\00:11:42.39 We look at the prophecies of Revelation and we believe that 00:11:43.31\00:11:46.36 we're living right in the beginning aspects of the 00:11:46.39\00:11:49.10 fulfillment of some of those prophecies and right at 00:11:49.13\00:11:51.87 the end of the fulfillment of some of the others. 00:11:51.88\00:11:55.59 So where does this put us as individuals? 00:11:56.02\00:12:00.32 You see, I can look in the prophecy and I can tell 00:12:00.68\00:12:03.51 where I am, but if I'm not prepared spiritually 00:12:03.54\00:12:07.02 to trust God in carrying me through, then it really 00:12:07.05\00:12:10.49 doesn't do me a whole lot of good to understand 00:12:10.52\00:12:13.01 what's going to be happening, if I'm not applying a 00:12:13.04\00:12:16.17 spiritual aspect to my life 00:12:16.18\00:12:18.56 so that I can live and go through 00:12:19.37\00:12:23.64 these very serious times. 00:12:23.67\00:12:27.24 Tonight, we're going to be talking about worry. 00:12:27.66\00:12:29.19 Worry is something that, really as I said, 00:12:29.20\00:12:32.23 it's a Biblical subject. 00:12:32.26\00:12:33.24 Christ talks about it. 00:12:33.25\00:12:34.53 He talks about it in Matthew the 6th chapter 00:12:34.56\00:12:38.11 and beginning with verse 25. 00:12:38.14\00:12:40.09 A pretty long passage, but I'm going to read it. 00:12:40.12\00:12:42.12 It says, "Therefore I say to you, do not worry." 00:12:42.69\00:12:46.87 I mean, how more direct can you be than that? 00:12:47.62\00:12:50.21 "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat 00:12:50.41\00:12:54.47 or what you will drink; nor about your body, 00:12:54.48\00:12:56.92 what you will put on. 00:12:56.95\00:12:58.05 Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 00:12:58.75\00:13:02.24 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap 00:13:02.25\00:13:06.30 nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. 00:13:06.33\00:13:10.79 Are you not of more value than they?" 00:13:10.82\00:13:13.68 Then it says, "Which of you by worrying can add one 00:13:14.18\00:13:17.71 cubit to his stature? 00:13:17.74\00:13:19.34 So why do you worry about clothing? 00:13:19.37\00:13:21.22 Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: 00:13:21.25\00:13:24.44 they neither toil nor spin. 00:13:24.47\00:13:26.03 And yet I say to you than even Solomon in all of his glory 00:13:26.06\00:13:29.32 was not arrayed like one of these. 00:13:29.35\00:13:31.92 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, 00:13:31.95\00:13:35.76 and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not 00:13:35.79\00:13:38.59 much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" 00:13:38.62\00:13:41.70 "Therefore," Jesus says, "do not worry, 00:13:41.73\00:13:45.13 saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' 00:13:45.16\00:13:47.58 or 'What shall we wear?' 00:13:47.61\00:13:48.75 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. 00:13:48.78\00:13:51.52 For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 00:13:51.55\00:13:56.10 But seek first the kingdom of God." 00:13:56.13\00:14:00.01 You make this your all consuming worry, so to speak; 00:14:00.45\00:14:04.69 the pursuing of the kingdom of God, 00:14:04.72\00:14:07.71 pursuing righteousness, pursuing an understanding and love 00:14:07.74\00:14:11.54 for Jesus Christ. 00:14:11.57\00:14:12.97 And He says, "Seek first the kingdom of God and 00:14:13.00\00:14:16.54 His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 00:14:16.57\00:14:20.30 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow 00:14:20.33\00:14:24.02 will worry about its own things. 00:14:24.05\00:14:25.95 Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." 00:14:26.15\00:14:30.20 Got enough trouble without coming up with more. 00:14:30.23\00:14:34.73 And you know, so many times we will worry about things that 00:14:34.76\00:14:38.38 really we have no business worrying about. 00:14:38.41\00:14:41.62 We will add on to some of our concerns. 00:14:42.02\00:14:46.51 And I remember a magazine that came out in 1952. 00:14:46.54\00:14:50.71 And some of you were born then. 00:14:51.71\00:14:54.93 And it became very popular. 00:14:54.96\00:14:58.37 First it was a comic book called, Mad Magazine. 00:14:58.40\00:15:02.08 When it quit being a comic book, I quit reading it 00:15:02.70\00:15:05.36 because it got to deep for me. 00:15:05.39\00:15:07.02 But on the front of the cover, there was a fellow by the 00:15:07.05\00:15:10.93 name of Alfred E. Neuman. 00:15:10.94\00:15:12.58 That's what they... 00:15:12.61\00:15:13.64 And he was quite a character. 00:15:13.84\00:15:15.81 His ears stuck out and he had this funny grin. 00:15:15.84\00:15:18.44 And it always said, "What, me worry?" 00:15:18.47\00:15:21.89 Now that's an extreme situation. 00:15:22.42\00:15:25.20 There are things to worry about. 00:15:25.23\00:15:27.25 I was pastoring in a church and a lady came to me one time. 00:15:27.28\00:15:31.88 She said, "I use to worry about everything." 00:15:31.91\00:15:34.62 "Now," she said, "I don't worry about anything." 00:15:35.26\00:15:37.35 You see, those are two extremes though. 00:15:38.18\00:15:40.72 Going from worrying about everything 00:15:41.13\00:15:43.32 to not worrying about anything. 00:15:43.92\00:15:45.64 That's not the kind of extreme that we're looking for. 00:15:46.41\00:15:49.38 There are certain things that we need to be concerned about. 00:15:49.41\00:15:52.66 There are things that we need to handle that we shouldn't 00:15:52.69\00:15:57.64 be concerned about. 00:15:57.67\00:16:00.13 And we need to know the difference of these two. 00:16:00.16\00:16:03.88 Thomas Carlyle was an intellectual that lived 00:16:03.91\00:16:06.49 in London in the past century. 00:16:06.52\00:16:08.28 And he was a great student. 00:16:08.31\00:16:10.70 And he would study at night, he would start some time 00:16:10.73\00:16:13.86 after midnight, and he would study all night long into the 00:16:13.89\00:16:17.00 early morning hours because he wanted it absolutely quiet. 00:16:17.03\00:16:21.17 He lived just out at the edge of London. 00:16:21.20\00:16:23.19 And he was so particular about being able to focus, 00:16:24.12\00:16:28.61 wanting it quiet, that he built a sound proof room to study in. 00:16:28.64\00:16:34.12 But somehow, his neighbor's rooster 00:16:35.16\00:16:40.19 would crow and he would hear it. 00:16:42.38\00:16:44.73 And finally, he went over to the farmer who was 00:16:46.29\00:16:49.23 just a little farmer. 00:16:49.25\00:16:50.25 It wasn't a real farm, it was right at the edge of London. 00:16:50.26\00:16:53.45 But you know, people sometimes even have chickens in town now. 00:16:53.48\00:16:56.29 I understand most ordinances won't let you have a rooster 00:16:56.32\00:17:00.97 in town, but you can have chickens in town. 00:17:01.00\00:17:03.22 And it's understandable why they won't let you have a rooster 00:17:03.52\00:17:06.10 because he goes crowing about things and he 00:17:06.13\00:17:08.57 makes a little noise. 00:17:08.60\00:17:09.62 And he went o the farmer and he said, "Look, that rooster 00:17:10.34\00:17:14.79 crowing disturbs me so badly. 00:17:15.87\00:17:19.74 I will buy the rooster, I will pay you for the rooster. 00:17:19.77\00:17:23.36 Just give me a price for the rooster." 00:17:23.39\00:17:25.84 And the farmer said, "Well listen." 00:17:25.87\00:17:27.92 He said, "I kind of like my rooster." 00:17:27.95\00:17:30.25 And he said, "He only crows three times." 00:17:30.28\00:17:33.74 And Thomas Carlyle said, "Yea, but just waiting for him to crow 00:17:34.69\00:17:38.09 every time is what drives me nuts." 00:17:38.12\00:17:41.07 And you know, sometimes waiting for the other shoe to drop or 00:17:41.38\00:17:46.29 waiting for something to happen actually causes 00:17:46.32\00:17:50.51 more grief to us, more stress to us, than if we knew 00:17:50.52\00:17:56.82 when something was going to happen. 00:17:56.85\00:17:59.62 I read some stats the other day. 00:17:59.65\00:18:01.56 It said that 40% of all worries never actually take place. 00:18:01.92\00:18:10.92 So the 40% of the things that you worry about that are 00:18:10.95\00:18:14.41 going to happen, never happen. 00:18:14.44\00:18:16.32 They said that 30% of the things that people worry about 00:18:16.81\00:18:20.38 are in the past. 00:18:20.39\00:18:22.09 And we worry about whether somehow the consequences 00:18:22.70\00:18:27.08 of them, or something of that nature. 00:18:27.11\00:18:29.54 And then the next figure was 12% of all worries 00:18:29.74\00:18:34.33 are health worries. 00:18:34.36\00:18:36.23 We're going to talk a little bit about health worries 00:18:36.24\00:18:38.63 in a little bit. 00:18:38.66\00:18:39.68 Then it said 10% were petty worries. 00:18:39.71\00:18:43.91 And that it really came down to there were only, 00:18:43.92\00:18:47.24 that adds up to 92%, there were only 8% of the things 00:18:47.27\00:18:52.36 that were legitimate worries that we worry about. 00:18:52.39\00:18:56.23 Now that was according to that study. 00:18:57.09\00:18:59.11 And if you accept and believe studies, then you can have some 00:19:00.11\00:19:04.40 confidence in that study. 00:19:04.43\00:19:06.00 And I just about was ready to believe that, then a friend 00:19:06.61\00:19:09.48 of mine told me, his name is Carl Phipps, he said that 00:19:09.51\00:19:12.86 42.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot. 00:19:12.89\00:19:18.73 So now that gives you something more to worry about; 00:19:20.22\00:19:22.84 whether these stats are actually accurate or not. 00:19:22.87\00:19:28.16 But things that come to use, in most cases, we should not 00:19:28.19\00:19:32.98 at all be concerned about. 00:19:33.01\00:19:35.51 Because the Lord promises us in Hebrews the 13th chapter 00:19:35.52\00:19:40.23 verse 5, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." 00:19:40.26\00:19:45.30 "I'll never leave you." 00:19:45.73\00:19:47.17 Now this is quoting Deuteronomy 31 and 00:19:47.47\00:19:50.51 also quoting the 1st chapter of Joshua. 00:19:50.54\00:19:53.58 So three times, God says to us in three different places 00:19:53.88\00:19:58.87 in scripture, "I'll never leave you, I'll never forsake you." 00:19:58.90\00:20:03.56 Think about that. 00:20:04.20\00:20:05.93 He says He will never leave us. 00:20:05.96\00:20:08.89 If that doesn't help us, then my friend, I don't know what will. 00:20:08.92\00:20:14.81 You see, He is always there to do one of three things: 00:20:14.84\00:20:19.22 It's trusting in Him, relying upon Him, that is so important. 00:20:39.46\00:20:47.91 Now there are five basic groups of worries. 00:20:48.41\00:20:51.66 The first is worry about the past. 00:20:52.30\00:20:55.57 You know that more people worry about the past 00:20:56.36\00:20:58.24 than you would ever think. 00:20:58.27\00:20:59.53 I visited with a business man once that was very concerned 00:21:00.19\00:21:04.05 because he had been cheating, in years past, the IRS. 00:21:04.08\00:21:10.05 But it was a very complicated situation. 00:21:10.96\00:21:13.86 And so there was no way, when we talked about it 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.86 and we prayed about it, can you go and make it right. 00:21:17.89\00:21:20.38 As he explained the reasons why he could not go and 00:21:20.41\00:21:24.47 make it right, it made sense. 00:21:24.50\00:21:26.79 Because in going to make it right, and some people are 00:21:26.82\00:21:29.31 going to disagree with this, he was going to make it extremely 00:21:29.34\00:21:32.84 hard on some other people. 00:21:32.87\00:21:34.59 Now he had given money to the government in what they call 00:21:35.31\00:21:40.06 a conscience fund. 00:21:40.09\00:21:41.34 And he felt like he had paid enough into the conscience fund 00:21:41.95\00:21:47.26 to make up for what he had done. 00:21:47.29\00:21:49.38 But he still felt so guilty about what he had done. 00:21:49.39\00:21:54.05 It was just failure to report income. 00:21:54.08\00:21:56.70 I mean, he was doing a lot of cash business and 00:21:56.73\00:21:59.76 he just did not report it. 00:21:59.79\00:22:01.48 But then if he began... 00:22:01.78\00:22:03.02 You see what I'm saying? 00:22:03.03\00:22:04.21 If he actually went back and detailed everything, 00:22:04.24\00:22:06.79 now it would involve a lot of other people. 00:22:06.82\00:22:08.84 And so he felt that the Lord was not asking him to do that. 00:22:09.24\00:22:13.33 But it was a sin of the past. 00:22:13.34\00:22:15.79 We had to lay it on the altar, give it to the Lord. 00:22:16.75\00:22:20.12 Some of these things are so complicated, so mixed up, 00:22:20.15\00:22:23.02 that there's no way on earth you can every unravel 00:22:23.03\00:22:26.53 all of those things. 00:22:26.56\00:22:27.65 And sometimes, you have to say, "Lord, here it is. 00:22:27.68\00:22:31.04 I lay it on You, I give it to You. 00:22:31.07\00:22:33.41 Please take it away from me. 00:22:33.44\00:22:35.42 It's something in the past and I want to lay it 00:22:35.45\00:22:38.61 before the altar and let it go." 00:22:38.64\00:22:41.66 And I believe that God forgives us when we do that. 00:22:41.69\00:22:44.85 I really do. 00:22:44.88\00:22:45.95 Sins of the past. 00:22:46.15\00:22:47.35 When I was pastoring, I had a lady come to me. 00:22:47.38\00:22:49.50 And this lady just poured out her heart. 00:22:49.53\00:22:51.51 Now she was one of the leaders in our church. 00:22:51.54\00:22:54.21 But she said there had been a time in her past 00:22:55.20\00:22:58.87 where she had a leave of her senses; 00:22:59.41\00:23:03.00 her spiritual senses and everything else. 00:23:03.30\00:23:06.20 And she had done something that was wrong. 00:23:06.23\00:23:09.37 She had been unfaithful to her husband. 00:23:09.40\00:23:11.25 Later, she got things back together. 00:23:11.89\00:23:15.61 Later, she had a family. 00:23:16.23\00:23:19.00 Now as those children were getting older, she was afraid 00:23:19.85\00:23:24.01 that they were going to find out 00:23:24.04\00:23:26.96 what their mother had done in the past. 00:23:27.58\00:23:30.85 And she carried this fear, this worry about the past. 00:23:31.59\00:23:35.54 And so we prayed together. 00:23:36.56\00:23:38.45 And I said, "Ok, let's look at the worst scenario. 00:23:38.75\00:23:42.04 Let's look at it. 00:23:42.58\00:23:43.56 Let's say they do find out. 00:23:43.59\00:23:45.77 I really don't believe they're going to find out. 00:23:46.17\00:23:47.88 I believe the Lord covers." 00:23:47.91\00:23:49.10 I've seen Him do it so many times. 00:23:49.13\00:23:51.21 You know, every thing that you've done in the past 00:23:51.24\00:23:53.62 is not always going to come up. 00:23:53.65\00:23:55.14 It's not. The Lord covers. 00:23:55.94\00:23:58.17 And when you repent, if it comes up later on, then 00:23:58.68\00:24:03.34 there's some reason that God's going to be using that to help 00:24:03.37\00:24:05.79 perfect your character. 00:24:05.82\00:24:07.31 But I believe that those things are buried, 00:24:07.34\00:24:10.19 and I believe they're buried in the bottom of the sea. 00:24:10.22\00:24:12.63 And I don't think they're going to come up, in most cases. 00:24:12.66\00:24:15.06 But I said, "Let's say that this comes up. 00:24:15.09\00:24:17.27 And your children who are now teenagers, 00:24:18.22\00:24:20.80 at least they'll be that old because they already are, 00:24:21.91\00:24:25.45 let's say they're going to be older. 00:24:25.48\00:24:26.59 Let's say it comes up and they find out that their 00:24:26.62\00:24:30.69 mother was human." 00:24:30.72\00:24:32.50 I said, "Let me tell you. 00:24:33.89\00:24:35.06 Those kids will forgive you. 00:24:36.40\00:24:38.22 They will forgive their mother for being human, 00:24:39.19\00:24:44.52 for making a mistake." 00:24:44.55\00:24:47.50 And I said, "Furthermore, it may come at a time, 00:24:47.53\00:24:52.16 it may come at a time when they themselves need encouragement. 00:24:52.66\00:24:59.55 And they see the godly life you're living now, 00:24:59.58\00:25:02.47 and okay, you've made a mistake here. 00:25:02.50\00:25:05.50 But they see how Christ has come into your life 00:25:05.53\00:25:08.40 and how you have changed. 00:25:08.41\00:25:09.71 And they have seen your example as a mother." 00:25:09.74\00:25:14.06 Now I said, "My friend, that may actually be 00:25:14.59\00:25:18.03 an encouragement to them." 00:25:18.06\00:25:20.06 I visited one time with a lady who had a granddaughter who 00:25:20.67\00:25:24.67 was getting out into the world and being a little bit wild. 00:25:24.70\00:25:28.66 And that grandmother shared with that granddaughter 00:25:28.69\00:25:33.82 how she had made the same mistakes. 00:25:34.42\00:25:37.53 What did it do? 00:25:38.48\00:25:39.76 It encouraged that girl. That girl found courage. 00:25:40.59\00:25:43.65 If her grandmother who, she saw her as a saint. 00:25:43.66\00:25:47.85 "If grandmother can make a mistake like this 00:25:47.88\00:25:50.85 and her life be restored, then that means that I don't 00:25:50.88\00:25:54.98 have to stay like I am, I don't have to continue 00:25:55.01\00:25:57.99 in the way that I've gone. 00:25:58.02\00:25:59.54 I can be restored." 00:25:59.57\00:26:01.50 And she was. 00:26:01.80\00:26:03.54 Because grandmother shared that she too had been human. 00:26:04.35\00:26:10.47 Worries of the past. 00:26:10.50\00:26:12.37 These are things that we need to forget. 00:26:12.40\00:26:14.97 The apostle Paul, you remember he had done some things 00:26:15.00\00:26:17.50 in the past that he was certainly not proud of. 00:26:17.53\00:26:20.15 He more than just held the coats, folks. 00:26:21.15\00:26:23.64 He organized that stoning of Stephen. 00:26:23.67\00:26:26.24 He never could quite get over it. 00:26:26.27\00:26:27.85 If you go to Jerusalem, Biblically, and you look at 00:26:27.88\00:26:33.33 all the things that the Jewish people there in Jerusalem; 00:26:33.34\00:26:37.14 they still held it against Paul what had happened. 00:26:37.17\00:26:40.94 They just somehow couldn't let it go. 00:26:40.97\00:26:43.16 And Paul had to talk about the past. 00:26:44.37\00:26:46.49 And he said in Philippians the 3rd chapter verse 13, 00:26:46.52\00:26:49.34 "Forgetting those things which are behind." 00:26:49.37\00:26:52.92 Forgetting those things. 00:26:53.40\00:26:54.79 You see, there are people that always want to bring things up. 00:26:54.82\00:26:57.30 They'll want to brings things up that happened 50 years ago 00:26:57.33\00:27:00.65 as if it happened last week. 00:27:00.68\00:27:03.24 I know some people like that. 00:27:03.54\00:27:05.47 And they will bring it up and throw it in your face. 00:27:06.23\00:27:09.36 And that's going to happen, but that's not God's way. 00:27:10.11\00:27:12.47 The Bible says, "Forgetting those things which are behind." 00:27:13.59\00:27:16.97 Forgetting them, pressing forward. 00:27:17.80\00:27:20.93 Because the Lord has forgiven and the Lord has restored. 00:27:21.37\00:27:27.37 Now the second group of worries are, the future. 00:27:27.40\00:27:30.66 You know, the Bible says that the day is coming 00:27:31.09\00:27:35.48 when there are going to be some real difficult times. 00:27:35.51\00:27:39.69 We know that this is going to happen. 00:27:40.31\00:27:42.19 There's no getting around it, but what do you do? 00:27:42.80\00:27:44.64 Do you sit and worry about that all this time? 00:27:44.67\00:27:46.60 About 35 to 40 years ago, a lady came to me, 00:27:46.63\00:27:49.71 and I was holding meetings, and she said, "I am so worried." 00:27:49.74\00:27:54.66 She said, "I've been worried about this for years." 00:27:54.69\00:27:56.32 And I said, "What are you worried about?" 00:27:56.35\00:27:57.74 She said, "I'm so worried that I will not be able to go through 00:27:57.75\00:28:01.79 the time of trouble." 00:28:01.82\00:28:02.95 Now that was 35 years ago. 00:28:04.00\00:28:05.80 I saw her not long ago, she's still worried. 00:28:06.53\00:28:08.94 But she has wasted at least 35 years of her life worrying. 00:28:09.42\00:28:15.44 The Lord says don't be anxious about that. 00:28:15.47\00:28:20.14 He even tells you, don't even worry about 00:28:20.17\00:28:22.67 what you're going to say. 00:28:22.70\00:28:23.90 In Mark the 13th chapter verse 11, "When they arrest you 00:28:23.93\00:28:27.55 and deliver you up, do not worry." 00:28:27.58\00:28:31.85 "Don't worry beforehand," He says. 00:28:31.88\00:28:34.52 So that means, don't worry about what's going to be 00:28:34.55\00:28:37.51 taking place in the future. 00:28:37.54\00:28:38.84 This is what Jesus is telling us, not what just some 00:28:38.87\00:28:44.02 philosopher is saying. 00:28:44.05\00:28:45.74 He says, "Don't even premeditate what you will speak." 00:28:45.77\00:28:50.15 Don't worry about it. 00:28:50.77\00:28:51.80 He says, "But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; 00:28:51.83\00:28:55.54 for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit." 00:28:55.57\00:29:01.20 He says, "Do not be worried beforehand." 00:29:01.23\00:29:04.92 And then Luke 21 verse 18, He says, "But not a hair 00:29:04.95\00:29:09.08 of your head shall be lost." 00:29:09.11\00:29:11.92 Now that would be good news for John Lomacang because 00:29:12.98\00:29:15.32 he's got quite a bit of hair. 00:29:15.33\00:29:17.87 And, John, I tell you, we admire your hair. 00:29:18.30\00:29:22.20 You've got a good head of hair. 00:29:22.23\00:29:24.16 And I've got a good head of hair up here, but I have to 00:29:24.17\00:29:27.18 comb it way back and let my eyebrows grow and then 00:29:27.21\00:29:30.36 comb them back over almost to cover the back part of my head. 00:29:30.39\00:29:34.60 But that's better news for you than 00:29:35.27\00:29:37.88 brother C.A. Murray over there. 00:29:37.91\00:29:39.47 Brother Murray, he's not too much worried about 00:29:39.50\00:29:44.12 the hair on his head. 00:29:44.15\00:29:45.94 But that is a promise that God has given us. 00:29:45.97\00:29:51.34 "Not one hair of your head shall be lost." 00:29:51.37\00:29:57.37 He has promised that He will carry us through. 00:29:57.40\00:30:02.16 We are not to worry about the future. 00:30:02.19\00:30:05.87 You know, worry and trust cannot live in the same place. 00:30:05.90\00:30:09.16 Some of you have heard of R.G. LeTourneau. 00:30:10.14\00:30:12.98 R.G. LeTourneau was a very successful business man. 00:30:13.01\00:30:16.69 He built heavy equipment, enormous, gigantic 00:30:16.72\00:30:20.93 earth movers you see out there. 00:30:20.96\00:30:23.26 Not just some ordinary caterpillar or bulldozer. 00:30:23.29\00:30:26.57 These gigantic pieces. 00:30:26.60\00:30:28.26 Some of these were his invention, his design, 00:30:28.29\00:30:31.33 and he made an awful lot of money. 00:30:31.36\00:30:34.07 He started off tithing 10% that he gave to the Lord. 00:30:34.10\00:30:42.03 And then he increased it to 20% and then 30% and then 40%. 00:30:42.06\00:30:46.24 God kept blessing him to where at the end of his life, 00:30:46.27\00:30:49.44 he was giving 90% of his income to the Lord. 00:30:49.47\00:30:53.76 He tithed himself 10%. 00:30:53.79\00:30:56.94 He kept 10%, 90% to the Lord. 00:30:56.95\00:31:00.63 He lived very simply. 00:31:00.64\00:31:01.84 But he just believed in God's word. 00:31:02.49\00:31:05.30 He built a college that's over there in Kilgore, Texas 00:31:05.31\00:31:08.86 and was a man that loved the Lord. 00:31:08.89\00:31:12.03 But he made a statement that I thought was very good. 00:31:12.06\00:31:15.00 LeTourneau said, "Worry and trust cannot live 00:31:15.82\00:31:19.74 in the same house." 00:31:19.75\00:31:20.90 Like some people. 00:31:21.45\00:31:23.01 "Worry and trust cannot live in the same house. 00:31:23.55\00:31:26.49 When worry is allowed to come in the door, 00:31:26.52\00:31:29.43 trust walks out the other door. 00:31:29.83\00:31:32.92 Worry stays until trust is invited in again, 00:31:33.81\00:31:36.64 where upon," he said, "worry walks out." 00:31:36.67\00:31:40.83 Worry and trust won't live in the same house. 00:31:40.86\00:31:45.71 You trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are not going to 00:31:46.27\00:31:50.23 have a problem with worry. 00:31:50.26\00:31:53.73 And you know, another thing that we worry about often is, 00:31:54.33\00:31:57.46 what others think. 00:31:57.49\00:31:59.84 What others think. 00:32:00.48\00:32:01.84 Too much what others think. 00:32:01.87\00:32:05.86 C.S. Lewis wrote in one of his books and he said, 00:32:06.16\00:32:09.89 he talked about a character named Mark and he said, 00:32:09.92\00:32:12.63 "Mark had a lot of Cocker Spaniel in him." 00:32:12.66\00:32:15.35 You know how Cocker Spaniels are. 00:32:16.18\00:32:17.78 They always want your love. 00:32:17.81\00:32:19.64 They'll run up to you, they want you to appreciate them. 00:32:19.67\00:32:22.65 They're friendly dogs. 00:32:22.68\00:32:23.81 I love Cocker Spaniels, I'm not putting them down. 00:32:23.84\00:32:26.91 But they're always trying to please. 00:32:26.94\00:32:29.79 Sometimes we've got a little too much Cocker Spaniel in us. 00:32:29.82\00:32:33.17 We want to please everybody too much. 00:32:33.64\00:32:36.48 It would be wonderful to have everybody like us, 00:32:36.51\00:32:39.45 everybody love us. 00:32:39.48\00:32:41.04 But you know something, in the world in which we live, 00:32:41.54\00:32:44.01 if you stand for anything, there are going to be people 00:32:44.04\00:32:47.17 that are not going to necessarily appreciate 00:32:47.20\00:32:48.98 what you stand for. 00:32:49.01\00:32:50.28 And so you cannot always be concerned totally about others. 00:32:50.31\00:32:56.29 Then there are those that worry about, not just what 00:32:56.32\00:32:59.38 others think, but maybe the safety of others. 00:32:59.41\00:33:02.57 I'm getting ready in November to take my 21st trip, 00:33:04.00\00:33:07.76 Lord willing, to Israel there during the Thanksgiving week. 00:33:07.79\00:33:12.89 Any of you want to go, let me know. 00:33:12.92\00:33:14.97 I've still got a few seats left. 00:33:15.00\00:33:17.52 But it's amazing, every time I've gone to Israel, 00:33:17.55\00:33:21.38 people will say, "We worried about you the whole time 00:33:22.18\00:33:25.11 you were gone." 00:33:25.12\00:33:26.12 I said, "I don't know why, I wasn't worried a bit." 00:33:27.40\00:33:29.95 In fact, I want to tell you this. 00:33:31.55\00:33:34.38 That as far as the stats are concerned, you are safer 00:33:34.41\00:33:38.93 in Israel than you are in this country. 00:33:38.96\00:33:41.32 Now that is statistically true. 00:33:41.35\00:33:43.62 For instance, there are 16 to 17 murders per year 00:33:44.03\00:33:49.78 in all of Israel, which is about 5 million people. 00:33:49.81\00:33:53.46 There are that many, about the same number of people, 00:33:54.16\00:33:56.89 in the greater Dallas Fort Worth area, metroplex area, 00:33:56.92\00:34:00.69 and Yvonne, there are more than 16 murders a weekend 00:34:00.72\00:34:05.37 in that place. 00:34:05.40\00:34:06.75 So in a weekend, there are more murders in the 00:34:06.78\00:34:09.75 Dallas Fort Worth area than there are in Israel in a year. 00:34:09.78\00:34:13.39 That is the truth. 00:34:14.31\00:34:16.48 You can look up those stats. 00:34:16.51\00:34:18.43 And they won't vary much from what I just said. 00:34:19.09\00:34:21.93 And it's safe there. 00:34:21.96\00:34:24.93 But I will tell you one thing. 00:34:25.33\00:34:27.18 That people have the reputation, in fact, if some little incident 00:34:27.21\00:34:33.50 of any kind happens, you know that CNN and Fox, 00:34:33.53\00:34:36.55 and everybody else, is there with their cameras going. 00:34:36.58\00:34:39.31 There was a situation one time I saw in Israel, 00:34:39.43\00:34:42.49 where one person was killed on a bus. 00:34:42.50\00:34:47.35 Some kind of an, it was just an altercation 00:34:47.38\00:34:50.37 that a person killed another. 00:34:50.38\00:34:51.38 They had all the news in this country going. 00:34:51.39\00:34:54.88 There was a robbery in Fort Worth Texas. 00:34:54.91\00:34:58.57 The robber shot several people at the bank, 00:34:59.47\00:35:02.78 killed several officers. 00:35:02.81\00:35:04.27 And when it was all through and the robber himself had 00:35:04.31\00:35:07.45 been killed, I think there were actually two robbers killed, 00:35:07.48\00:35:09.86 there was a total of eight people killed. 00:35:09.89\00:35:12.39 And it didn't even make national news. 00:35:12.42\00:35:14.82 That was in Fort Worth. 00:35:15.49\00:35:17.21 But this one person, they even went live with reports 00:35:18.04\00:35:23.45 because it was happening in Israel. 00:35:23.48\00:35:25.61 The focus on the Middle East is unbelievable. 00:35:25.64\00:35:29.46 But when you really get down to it, it's not always 00:35:29.49\00:35:32.69 as dangerous as the news likes to make it 00:35:32.72\00:35:36.15 sound like that it is. 00:35:36.18\00:35:37.81 But worrying about others, people worry 00:35:37.91\00:35:40.16 too much about others. 00:35:40.19\00:35:41.45 Then there's the health worry. 00:35:41.48\00:35:43.23 One of the greatest things that you can do with health 00:35:44.42\00:35:48.65 is take care of your body through good eating. 00:35:48.66\00:35:54.06 I like the NEWSTART idea. 00:35:54.09\00:35:56.57 It talks about nutrition, it talks about exercise, 00:35:56.60\00:36:01.23 water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest, and trust in God. 00:36:01.83\00:36:09.53 The acronym is NEWSTART. 00:36:10.21\00:36:12.76 You get the right foods, you get the right exercise. 00:36:12.79\00:36:16.28 Now many years ago, 1980, I went to Weimar. 00:36:16.31\00:36:21.50 And I don't believe I'd be alive today if I hadn't, 00:36:21.97\00:36:24.19 because Camille began to put these principles into our diet. 00:36:24.22\00:36:29.93 We haven't has a gravy with flour in it since those days. 00:36:29.94\00:36:34.95 She makes a cashew gravy or some type of a very healthy gravy, 00:36:34.98\00:36:39.29 things of that nature that changed in our diet. 00:36:39.30\00:36:43.08 Now I want to tell you that I don't always follow 00:36:43.11\00:36:46.73 everything that's there. 00:36:46.76\00:36:48.07 The biggest problem that I have is lack of exercise. 00:36:48.10\00:36:51.17 But sometimes people say, "Well, Jim, you need to lose weight." 00:36:51.81\00:36:54.41 Well I do. 00:36:54.44\00:36:55.45 But I'm 70 pounds lighter than I was at my high. 00:36:55.48\00:36:59.74 See, they don't see where I was. 00:37:00.14\00:37:03.47 It's like, hey, I'm not where I want to be, but I sure am 00:37:03.50\00:37:06.77 not where I was either. 00:37:06.80\00:37:08.35 And the Lord keeps helping me gradually get these 00:37:08.65\00:37:12.49 things under control. 00:37:12.52\00:37:14.13 But if you take care of your health, it will be something 00:37:14.14\00:37:18.91 that you'll be very happy that you did. 00:37:18.92\00:37:20.78 Drink lots of water. 00:37:20.79\00:37:21.91 Now I do that. 00:37:21.94\00:37:23.05 Get the sunlight. 00:37:23.26\00:37:24.30 I don't get quite as much as I should. 00:37:24.33\00:37:26.22 Temperance, yes I am very temperate in things. 00:37:26.25\00:37:29.59 And my wife will testify to that. 00:37:29.62\00:37:31.17 Air, don't get as much as I should. 00:37:31.20\00:37:34.05 Rest, I don't do too bad there. 00:37:34.08\00:37:36.62 But I do trust in God. 00:37:36.65\00:37:38.86 And so, I may not be 100% on all of these, but I keep 00:37:39.80\00:37:44.83 working to try to help. 00:37:44.86\00:37:47.04 Health is so important. 00:37:47.07\00:37:48.45 And how you approach health is so important because sometimes 00:37:48.48\00:37:53.02 we can actually think ourselves into illness. 00:37:53.05\00:37:57.13 In fact, they tell us that a great number, high percentage 00:37:57.72\00:38:03.29 of illness is brought about by emotionally induced illness. 00:38:03.32\00:38:08.22 Now that doesn't mean you're imagining the illness. 00:38:08.72\00:38:10.82 Although sometimes that can be the case. 00:38:10.85\00:38:13.00 But it means that through your emotions and being upset, 00:38:13.40\00:38:17.36 that your body becomes ill. 00:38:17.39\00:38:21.17 And sometimes, illness can be imagined. 00:38:21.81\00:38:26.49 There's no question about that. 00:38:26.79\00:38:27.91 I have a good friend, very good friend; Gary Grimes. 00:38:27.94\00:38:31.25 In fact, I called him tonight and said, "Gary, I may tell 00:38:31.76\00:38:33.93 this story if I get enough time. 00:38:33.96\00:38:35.49 And will you be mad if I use your name?" 00:38:35.52\00:38:38.30 He said, "I'll be mad if you don't." 00:38:38.33\00:38:40.20 So I'm using his name tonight. 00:38:40.23\00:38:43.50 He's a lifelong friend. 00:38:43.53\00:38:45.59 We met when I was in academy. 00:38:45.60\00:38:48.32 So he was bragging about how good he felt, 00:38:49.06\00:38:53.45 "Man, I feel so good." 00:38:53.95\00:38:55.35 Gary is a strong guy, very athletic guy, 00:38:55.38\00:38:57.85 and was a very good athlete. 00:38:57.88\00:39:00.36 Great basketball player, great football player, 00:39:00.37\00:39:03.20 baseball player, everything. 00:39:03.23\00:39:04.92 But his roommate, Bill Lingo, and several of us, 00:39:05.32\00:39:09.69 decided that we would try something with Gary. 00:39:09.72\00:39:13.56 Because we thought we could influence the way Gary thought 00:39:13.59\00:39:17.14 about things by saying things to him. 00:39:17.17\00:39:20.55 And we decided that the next morning at breakfast 00:39:21.13\00:39:25.43 we would tell Gary that we didn't think 00:39:25.46\00:39:28.17 he looked very good. 00:39:28.20\00:39:29.42 And see if we could actually make him sick. 00:39:30.18\00:39:33.50 Now I will have to confess, I was part of this conspiracy. 00:39:34.49\00:39:39.03 But I was the last one to leave the dorm that morning. 00:39:40.20\00:39:44.44 The others had already seen Gary over at the cafeteria. 00:39:44.47\00:39:49.21 And they had started off by saying, 00:39:49.97\00:39:52.09 "Grimes, you feel alright? You okay? 00:39:52.12\00:39:55.72 You don't look like you feel too good." 00:39:55.75\00:39:57.54 Two or three people salted to say that to him. 00:39:57.57\00:40:00.69 Now when I came out of the dorm and was headed towards 00:40:01.39\00:40:03.60 the cafeteria, I met Gary. 00:40:03.61\00:40:06.15 He's going like this towards the dormitory. 00:40:06.80\00:40:09.64 I said, "Gary, you don't look..." 00:40:09.65\00:40:11.62 He said, "I know, I know." 00:40:11.65\00:40:13.45 He didn't even let me get it out. 00:40:13.85\00:40:15.60 And he was headed to the dorm. 00:40:17.09\00:40:18.38 He was sick for several days. 00:40:18.41\00:40:20.20 And we only in the last few years confessed our sins 00:40:22.92\00:40:26.71 that we had disturbed him physically. 00:40:27.50\00:40:30.92 I told him, I said... 00:40:30.95\00:40:32.27 Now I mentioned him in the book I wrote, 00:40:32.30\00:40:33.88 The Battle Is The Lord's. 00:40:33.91\00:40:35.25 Which they're offering here with this series. 00:40:35.28\00:40:38.19 But I said, "Gary, now you're not going to sue me 00:40:38.58\00:40:42.35 if I use your name?" 00:40:42.38\00:40:43.77 He said, "Yea, I'm going to sue you anyway." 00:40:43.80\00:40:45.85 So he said, "You might as well go ahead and use it 00:40:45.88\00:40:48.48 because it's in the book." 00:40:48.51\00:40:49.80 I know he's teasing. 00:40:49.83\00:40:50.84 Gary, I know you won't do that. 00:40:50.85\00:40:52.37 We're too good a friends. 00:40:52.40\00:40:53.59 But we've always had a good time teasing. 00:40:53.62\00:40:56.65 By the way, the Lord has given him good health. 00:40:56.68\00:40:59.51 Because he walks every day, he drinks his water, 00:41:00.11\00:41:03.31 he watches all these different things with diet. 00:41:03.34\00:41:06.93 And he's had a good long healthy life. 00:41:06.94\00:41:11.14 It pays to do it. 00:41:11.15\00:41:13.09 I guarantee you. 00:41:13.12\00:41:15.10 It pays to watch your health. 00:41:15.13\00:41:19.10 And then the 5th set of problems are finances. 00:41:19.22\00:41:25.29 I could tell you all kinds of things about finances. 00:41:25.94\00:41:29.21 It's amazing how these things will happen, 00:41:29.74\00:41:34.79 and we will sometimes lose money, 00:41:34.82\00:41:42.34 or let ourselves get into debt, or have a very difficult time. 00:41:42.37\00:41:48.46 But I'll tell you this, that the Lord will see you through. 00:41:48.48\00:41:51.11 Every time, He will see you through. 00:41:51.56\00:41:53.67 I remember one time, we were just in the ministry. 00:41:53.68\00:41:57.27 And Camille and I had our son Jimmy and he was just a baby. 00:41:57.86\00:42:02.90 And we had formula and so forth for him. 00:42:03.84\00:42:08.21 And we sat down and wrote all of our bills, 00:42:08.61\00:42:13.27 wrote our tithe check first, wrote all of our bills. 00:42:13.30\00:42:16.85 And we had eleven dollars left over to make the month. 00:42:16.88\00:42:22.43 And now, we had to buy groceries, we had to buy gas. 00:42:23.25\00:42:27.66 We had to buy everything that we needed for a full month. 00:42:27.69\00:42:32.75 And you know, sometimes, when you're supposed to be the one 00:42:33.49\00:42:37.38 that's providing the bread, the pressure all of a sudden 00:42:37.41\00:42:42.08 comes on you, and I was tempted to hold that tithe check until 00:42:42.11\00:42:47.31 somehow I got my finances up. 00:42:47.34\00:42:50.87 You know, I was talking to a fellow one time that did that. 00:42:51.39\00:42:53.97 And I said, "How can you do that? 00:42:54.17\00:42:56.28 You know you shouldn't be doing that. 00:42:56.29\00:42:57.29 It's robbing God." 00:42:57.32\00:42:58.49 He said, "If I can't borrow from God, who can I borrow from?" 00:42:58.52\00:43:01.30 And he kind of puzzled me there for a minute. 00:43:01.70\00:43:05.20 But that's not exactly what the Lord said. 00:43:05.23\00:43:07.81 He says, "Trust Me." 00:43:07.84\00:43:09.50 So I said to Camille, I said, "Do you think the Lord 00:43:10.35\00:43:14.25 really expects us to turn this tithe in when we've got a..." 00:43:14.28\00:43:18.82 And I was hoping that she would say what she said. 00:43:18.83\00:43:21.64 But I had to ask. 00:43:22.42\00:43:24.21 Because you've got eleven dollars to make the month. 00:43:24.85\00:43:27.31 You know that's going to be a long month. 00:43:27.88\00:43:29.40 And we were on the envelope method. 00:43:29.43\00:43:31.02 There was no credit card. 00:43:31.03\00:43:32.45 We didn't have any credit cards. 00:43:32.46\00:43:33.95 Whatever money we had, we had it in an envelope. 00:43:33.98\00:43:36.82 We had one for this expense and that expense. 00:43:36.85\00:43:39.66 And they were all gone, there was nothing in them. 00:43:39.67\00:43:42.69 One just general; eleven dollars. 00:43:42.72\00:43:45.46 And she looked at me and she said, "We don't rob God." 00:43:46.91\00:43:50.41 And I felt ashamed, very much ashamed. 00:43:51.84\00:43:55.22 You know, when you're depressed, sometimes you just want to 00:43:55.79\00:43:57.76 get out, you want to go somewhere. 00:43:57.79\00:43:58.91 I said, "Come on, let's go for a drive." 00:43:58.94\00:44:01.94 Here we've got eleven dollars to make the month, 00:44:02.64\00:44:05.26 and we're going out and driving up all our gasoline in the car. 00:44:05.29\00:44:09.20 You don't have a lot of sense sometimes, you know. 00:44:10.37\00:44:12.98 When we got back, there was a car out in front. 00:44:13.70\00:44:18.06 And in that car was a friend that we'd known when I was 00:44:19.77\00:44:24.81 Assistant Pastor in South Lancaster. 00:44:24.84\00:44:27.87 His name was Howard Lee, worked for Worthington Foods. 00:44:27.90\00:44:31.45 He was the rep for Worthington for that part of the world. 00:44:31.48\00:44:35.28 Howard said, "I came by here and you weren't here. 00:44:36.61\00:44:39.20 I went over to the church and thought you might be there." 00:44:39.21\00:44:41.70 Now if you knew Howard, just the fact that he stopped. 00:44:41.73\00:44:44.69 He was going from South Lancaster to New York City. 00:44:44.72\00:44:47.28 Just the fact that we would stop was a miracle. 00:44:47.31\00:44:50.73 Period. 00:44:51.56\00:44:52.81 He's a very impatient guy. 00:44:53.31\00:44:55.98 Howard, if you're watching, I hate to say this, 00:44:56.08\00:44:57.97 but you are a very impatient person. 00:44:58.00\00:45:00.03 And your wife will testify to that. 00:45:00.06\00:45:04.53 But he's a very impatient guy. 00:45:04.56\00:45:06.44 And he went to our house and we weren't there, 00:45:06.47\00:45:08.94 went to the church and we weren't there, 00:45:08.97\00:45:10.19 came back to the house and waited on us. 00:45:10.22\00:45:13.15 And he said, "I just wondered, could you all use some food?" 00:45:14.76\00:45:20.21 Our cupboards were bare. 00:45:21.02\00:45:22.66 We opened up the cupboards to show him. 00:45:22.69\00:45:24.77 Could we use some food? 00:45:25.24\00:45:26.58 Yeah, we could use some food. 00:45:26.61\00:45:29.33 He said, "I've got some samples, a lot of new products and stuff 00:45:29.44\00:45:33.01 that Worthington wants me to have somebody try." 00:45:33.04\00:45:35.95 And he said, "I'd like for you and Camille to try these." 00:45:35.98\00:45:38.84 Some of them were some of the new frozen foods. 00:45:38.87\00:45:40.56 We'd never even eaten some of those before. 00:45:40.59\00:45:43.13 And he brought some of those and he had some canned goods. 00:45:43.16\00:45:45.82 When he left there, we knew we would not starve that month. 00:45:45.85\00:45:51.63 We would make it somehow that month. 00:45:52.20\00:45:54.86 One after another during that month, miracles took place. 00:45:54.87\00:46:00.47 We started the month with eleven dollars, 00:46:00.50\00:46:02.96 never asked anybody for anything. 00:46:02.97\00:46:05.66 Never. 00:46:06.06\00:46:07.24 A refund check came from where we lived before 00:46:08.02\00:46:11.15 that was from the electrical company and they had finally 00:46:11.18\00:46:14.59 sent us our deposit back. 00:46:14.62\00:46:16.39 Well there it was. 00:46:16.42\00:46:17.66 We ended the month, we had everything we needed 00:46:17.69\00:46:21.21 all month long, able to buy our fuel, able to buy our gasoline, 00:46:21.24\00:46:25.49 able to buy our food, and ended the month 00:46:25.52\00:46:28.23 with something like 40 dollars. 00:46:28.26\00:46:30.48 And the Lord supplied it all. 00:46:32.06\00:46:37.70 I will tell you that He will help you. 00:46:38.32\00:46:42.05 Years later, I was in Dallas Texas and I had just started 00:46:42.08\00:46:46.09 a business and things were really rough. 00:46:46.12\00:46:49.25 And I was so tense, I could not figure out what to do. 00:46:50.01\00:46:54.28 And things were so difficult. 00:46:54.31\00:46:56.51 And it seemed like I could not make it. 00:46:56.54\00:46:59.50 And it looked like things were really going to be rough. 00:47:00.38\00:47:03.59 I mean, real rough. They already were rough. 00:47:03.62\00:47:05.65 I went out and I bought 100 pounds of beans 00:47:06.74\00:47:10.31 and 100 pounds of rice and put them in a room. 00:47:11.25\00:47:15.33 And I told Camille, "If things get tough, we will only 00:47:16.47\00:47:21.12 eat out of this, we will not starve. 00:47:21.15\00:47:23.29 We'll have something for our family. 00:47:23.30\00:47:24.67 It's just beans and rice, but we will have something 00:47:24.70\00:47:27.41 for our family. 00:47:27.44\00:47:28.51 We will make it through." 00:47:28.54\00:47:29.98 And then I did something absolutely insane. 00:47:31.71\00:47:35.31 To show you how insane I was, 00:47:35.34\00:47:37.80 I bought a swimming pool and put it in the back yard. 00:47:38.89\00:47:41.75 Can you imagine how foolish that was? 00:47:43.58\00:47:46.68 And then I put a heater in it. 00:47:48.16\00:47:50.84 And I heated that pool to where it was like a bath tub. 00:47:52.93\00:47:56.33 One of my friends said, "You've got the biggest 00:47:56.36\00:47:58.00 bath tub in town." 00:47:58.03\00:47:59.33 And every night when I came home, right after we would eat, 00:47:59.91\00:48:05.01 I would go out and get in the pool and I would pray, 00:48:05.02\00:48:08.44 in that pool, and ask the Lord to give me wisdom 00:48:09.89\00:48:15.19 to meet the problems that we were having, 00:48:15.22\00:48:18.44 and to somehow make things go. 00:48:18.47\00:48:22.38 And I want to tell you something. 00:48:23.27\00:48:24.88 He did. 00:48:25.56\00:48:26.74 He gave me solutions. 00:48:27.52\00:48:29.15 During that time, one of the things that I decided was... 00:48:29.16\00:48:33.12 I was losing money, I was losing money. 00:48:33.15\00:48:36.09 And people said, "How can you lose money and live?" 00:48:36.12\00:48:39.14 We were taking just a draw of 1000 dollars a month. 00:48:39.17\00:48:42.42 But the company was losing, that I owned 100%. 00:48:42.45\00:48:48.49 I was eating into my capital, eating into borrowed money, 00:48:48.52\00:48:52.97 I was not making any money. 00:48:53.00\00:48:54.75 And so, we decided by faith we were going to tithe 00:48:56.06\00:49:01.60 even that 1000 dollar draw. 00:49:01.63\00:49:04.21 So we started paying 100 dollars tithe. 00:49:05.24\00:49:07.59 You know how much money we had left over at the 00:49:08.00\00:49:09.89 end of the month? 00:49:09.92\00:49:10.92 The same as we did when we had the whole $1000, nothing. 00:49:10.95\00:49:13.81 But we were giving 100 dollars. 00:49:14.42\00:49:16.77 So out there in that swimming pool, I just felt the Lord 00:49:16.80\00:49:22.07 encourage me to up it to $200. 00:49:22.10\00:49:24.06 So we upped it to 200 dollars a month. 00:49:24.09\00:49:27.16 How much money did we have at the end of the month? Nothing. 00:49:28.19\00:49:30.92 We didn't have anything at the end of the month, 00:49:30.95\00:49:32.38 but we were able to pay that tithe and still able to make 00:49:32.41\00:49:36.45 all of our bills somehow. 00:49:36.48\00:49:38.44 And then at the end of about several months, 00:49:39.75\00:49:43.77 I said, "We're going to go to a third tithe." 00:49:44.17\00:49:46.17 And we went to 300 dollars a month. 00:49:46.20\00:49:49.36 And that time, I backed out with my car, put it into gear, 00:49:50.37\00:49:57.23 and it wouldn't go. 00:49:57.26\00:49:58.31 My transmission had just gone kerplunk. 00:49:59.76\00:50:03.46 And I sat there and I said, "Lord, you know by faith 00:50:04.61\00:50:08.24 we're reaching out here, by faith. 00:50:08.27\00:50:11.00 There's just no way that we're going to be able to continue 00:50:11.03\00:50:17.26 tithing if I've got to do something 00:50:17.29\00:50:18.71 about this transmission." 00:50:18.74\00:50:20.07 So I got it down into one of the lower gears that would work. 00:50:21.20\00:50:25.14 Nothing else would work. 00:50:26.11\00:50:27.59 And I crept to a transmission place. 00:50:27.62\00:50:31.72 I got out and I told the man... 00:50:32.59\00:50:35.82 I only had about 70,000 miles on that car, but 00:50:36.32\00:50:39.37 that transmission was gone, gone, gone. 00:50:39.40\00:50:44.40 I told him, I said, "I can't afford to do anything." 00:50:45.51\00:50:48.73 He said, "Well, I'll tell you what I'll do." 00:50:49.46\00:50:51.18 He said, "I can drain that transmission fluid 00:50:51.60\00:50:54.40 and I will help you the best I can, and you'll get maybe 00:50:54.81\00:51:00.39 3000 miles out of this at the most. 00:51:00.42\00:51:04.13 But this transmission is gone, it's burned up." 00:51:04.16\00:51:06.29 But he said, "I'll drain it, take all the pieces of 00:51:06.93\00:51:10.24 stuff that's in there out, and we'll flush it. 00:51:10.27\00:51:15.24 And I think I can get you a few more miles." 00:51:15.25\00:51:17.59 I said, "Lord, if you'll just give me 5000 more miles, 00:51:17.62\00:51:22.08 I'll save, I'll do whatever I can to make it." 00:51:22.63\00:51:26.08 5000 miles. 00:51:26.85\00:51:28.36 I got 5, I got 10, I got 15, I got 20, 00:51:28.39\00:51:33.65 I got 25, I got 30, I got 35, 40, 45, 00:51:33.68\00:51:38.63 over 50,000 miles on that transmission. 00:51:38.66\00:51:42.30 The Lord did it. 00:51:42.33\00:51:44.13 He did it because He will see you through these 00:51:45.17\00:51:48.33 financial difficulties. 00:51:48.36\00:51:49.86 There's just no way that He is not concerned about you 00:51:49.96\00:51:54.77 and that He will not bring you through. 00:51:55.42\00:51:59.33 You know, I've mentioned sometimes to some of you that 00:51:59.85\00:52:07.20 there have been times when I worried about my family; 00:52:07.61\00:52:11.15 worried about my children. 00:52:11.18\00:52:12.83 Let me tell you how that got started. 00:52:13.53\00:52:15.45 When I was seven years old, I remember one night. 00:52:16.45\00:52:21.79 I remember that night just better than I do some things 00:52:21.82\00:52:25.17 that happened last week. 00:52:25.20\00:52:26.40 We went ingathering, and what a night I had. 00:52:28.46\00:52:33.07 Biggest night I've ever had, one of those little cans 00:52:33.58\00:52:36.23 sticking it out in front of people, 00:52:36.26\00:52:38.02 "I'm a junior missionary volunteer out working for Jesus. 00:52:38.81\00:52:41.65 Would you like to help?" 00:52:41.66\00:52:43.00 And that had been the best night that I'd ever had. 00:52:43.85\00:52:47.42 And there were about ten teams and I was number one. 00:52:47.45\00:52:52.39 I'd never been number one before. 00:52:52.42\00:52:54.29 And we went home, went to bed. 00:52:54.89\00:52:58.74 In the middle of the night, the phone rings. 00:52:59.41\00:53:02.40 I remember, my father, he was standing there 00:53:03.17\00:53:07.46 and he said, "Oh no, no." 00:53:07.49\00:53:10.07 And he hung up, called back. 00:53:10.10\00:53:12.14 My brothers were now in the hall standing there next to dad. 00:53:12.17\00:53:15.74 Mother was weeping in bed. 00:53:15.77\00:53:17.84 I knew something was really wrong, but I 00:53:18.34\00:53:20.44 didn't know what it was. 00:53:20.47\00:53:21.47 Then I heard my dad, "Is this the highway patrol?" 00:53:21.48\00:53:25.10 "Yes, it is." 00:53:25.13\00:53:26.14 Did you just call my home and tell me that my daughter, Mary, 00:53:26.17\00:53:31.64 was killed in an automobile accident tonight?" 00:53:31.67\00:53:34.11 And then I heard my dad say, "Oh, so it's true?" 00:53:36.68\00:53:40.99 Then he hung up. 00:53:41.97\00:53:43.10 Now my brother and I didn't have our own room. 00:53:43.85\00:53:46.18 In the summer time, we slept in a corner of my 00:53:46.62\00:53:49.50 mom and dad's room. 00:53:49.53\00:53:50.98 In the front part of the house... 00:53:51.50\00:53:53.10 We lived in a two bedroom house with five children. 00:53:53.13\00:53:56.07 In the front part of the house, my two brother's slept 00:53:56.47\00:53:59.62 just at the edge of the living room. 00:53:59.65\00:54:01.77 And then my sister had the other bedroom. 00:54:02.45\00:54:05.99 Four boys, one girl. 00:54:06.53\00:54:07.94 She was the queen of our family. 00:54:07.97\00:54:09.92 Beautiful girl. 00:54:10.66\00:54:11.87 Active girl. 00:54:12.49\00:54:13.63 She'd gone off to school, gone off to Southwestern. 00:54:13.66\00:54:16.27 And financially we couldn't make it so she'd come home. 00:54:16.30\00:54:19.96 And so when she came home, Elder Johnson came to our home. 00:54:20.64\00:54:29.00 The youth leader, Kimber Johnson. 00:54:29.03\00:54:31.80 Many of you knew him. 00:54:31.83\00:54:33.25 He came to our home to visit because anytime a kid 00:54:33.72\00:54:37.62 left school, he would go see them. 00:54:37.65\00:54:39.05 We were so excited. 00:54:40.30\00:54:41.66 My brother Paul and I, I was seven and Paul was 00:54:41.69\00:54:44.44 four years old, but we were so active. 00:54:44.47\00:54:47.33 Elder Johnson didn't realize, to us he was a celebrity. 00:54:48.28\00:54:53.24 We had never seen anybody from the conference office 00:54:53.27\00:54:55.71 come to our house. 00:54:55.74\00:54:56.93 I mean, this was unbelievable. 00:54:56.96\00:54:58.73 And when he left, my sister said to my mom, 00:54:59.50\00:55:03.53 "You know, mother, if anything ever happens to me, 00:55:03.56\00:55:06.28 I want him to have my funeral." 00:55:06.31\00:55:08.98 My mother laughed and she said, "Honey, you're only 00:55:09.96\00:55:12.24 18 years old. 00:55:12.25\00:55:13.47 Nothing is going to happen to you." 00:55:13.50\00:55:15.27 And Saturday night, she was killed. 00:55:16.10\00:55:18.29 Hit by a drunk driver. 00:55:18.32\00:55:19.87 They were in a car and she and the young man she was with 00:55:20.67\00:55:24.74 were both killed. 00:55:24.77\00:55:25.97 The two in the front seat survived. 00:55:26.40\00:55:28.62 And now we would have her funeral. 00:55:29.28\00:55:32.69 I remember that they called Kimber Johnson to come back, 00:55:33.15\00:55:35.99 but he misunderstood because the person who called 00:55:36.02\00:55:38.84 was my grandmother. 00:55:38.87\00:55:40.09 And somehow in the connection, he thought he was coming 00:55:40.12\00:55:43.50 to hold Mary's grandmother's funeral. 00:55:43.53\00:55:46.75 And when he arrived, he was late for the funeral. 00:55:47.26\00:55:51.00 He came right to the platform, had no chance to talk to anyone. 00:55:51.53\00:55:54.75 And when he stepped up to speak, he looked into the casket. 00:55:54.78\00:55:58.04 And he said later, "I nearly fainted. 00:55:58.07\00:56:00.44 There was the young girl I had visited with 00:56:01.05\00:56:03.25 just a few nights before. 00:56:03.28\00:56:05.13 And now she was dead." 00:56:06.44\00:56:07.64 I was young. 00:56:08.31\00:56:09.31 I kept saying to myself, "When all these people are gone, 00:56:09.94\00:56:14.18 I know the Lord's going to resurrect her." 00:56:15.03\00:56:17.70 I had studied about Jairus' daughter in the Bible 00:56:17.73\00:56:20.60 and I just knew this was going to happen. 00:56:20.63\00:56:22.71 And I kept waiting for it to happen. 00:56:22.74\00:56:24.53 And finally, it came time for the family to go. 00:56:25.06\00:56:31.83 My dad lifted me so I could see her. 00:56:31.86\00:56:34.98 And I was waiting for this to happen. 00:56:35.80\00:56:38.81 I knew then all of our family would accept Christ 00:56:38.84\00:56:41.48 if this happened. 00:56:41.51\00:56:42.64 And I knew it was going to take place. 00:56:42.65\00:56:44.70 And I waited. 00:56:45.19\00:56:46.52 And then they started to close and I said, "Oh no, don't." 00:56:47.85\00:56:50.51 And then all of a sudden, I had not cried a bit, 00:56:51.92\00:56:55.14 but at that time, hot tears shot from my eyes. 00:56:55.54\00:56:58.69 I'll never forget it as long as I live. 00:56:58.72\00:57:01.44 And I knew what death was. 00:57:02.47\00:57:06.10 And I knew that I wouldn't see my sister 00:57:06.62\00:57:10.20 until the resurrection. 00:57:10.23\00:57:11.92 That brought a worry that stayed with me with our children. 00:57:12.56\00:57:17.02 But I've given that to the Lord now. 00:57:17.75\00:57:20.21 I trust in Him. 00:57:20.48\00:57:21.90 And I know that He's coming back 00:57:22.72\00:57:25.90 and we will have no worries, no complaints. 00:57:26.51\00:57:30.92
