Welcome to Anchors of Truth, live from the 00:00:13.32\00:00:16.36 3ABN worship center, the Extravagant 00:00:16.37\00:00:18.77 Love series with Ty Gibson. 00:00:18.78\00:00:20.56 Good evening, when I was young most of the texts 00:00:23.05\00:00:26.30 that I learned, I learned the King James Version 00:00:26.31\00:00:29.03 of the Bible. One of the most enduring and 00:00:29.04\00:00:31.74 endearing text to me was found in Book of Romans 00:00:31.75\00:00:35.23 chapter 5; I think it begins about verse 7. 00:00:35.24\00:00:38.11 The Bible says for scarcely, for the 00:00:38.12\00:00:40.88 righteous man will one die, perhaps for a good 00:00:40.89\00:00:43.70 man one would dare to die? And I always 00:00:43.71\00:00:46.94 loved that text, it's always been very dear 00:00:46.95\00:00:50.11 to me as it talks about the power of God's 00:00:50.12\00:00:53.17 love, but I found a different version 00:00:53.18\00:00:55.20 I want to just read for you. I gotta put 00:00:55.21\00:00:59.36 on my specs. This is the, the clear word version 00:00:59.37\00:01:04.49 of that very same text. The Bible says: 00:01:04.50\00:01:08.93 A person would hardly give his life for 00:01:09.98\00:01:13.13 a self-righteous man, but you might find 00:01:13.14\00:01:16.90 someone willing to give his life for a truly 00:01:16.91\00:01:20.09 good man. But God showed His love for us 00:01:20.10\00:01:25.16 while we were still sinners, His natural 00:01:25.85\00:01:28.52 enemies, by giving His Son to die for us. 00:01:28.53\00:01:33.05 Our series is of course called Extravagant Love, 00:01:33.66\00:01:37.74 and I dare say that that is an example 00:01:38.77\00:01:42.05 of Extravagant Love. I think the best kind 00:01:42.06\00:01:46.05 of love is demonstrated love, not 00:01:46.06\00:01:49.48 theoretical love, not love that is only 00:01:49.49\00:01:51.82 spoken about or even thought about or 00:01:51.83\00:01:53.95 dreamed about, or sung about. 00:01:53.96\00:01:56.56 The best love is love that is put in action, 00:01:57.15\00:02:00.11 and that's what we have been talking about 00:02:00.63\00:02:02.00 the last several nights Extravagant Love, 00:02:02.01\00:02:04.97 I really love that that, that title. Tonight's 00:02:04.98\00:02:08.14 sermon is called Off The Charts, Love 00:02:08.15\00:02:13.57 off the Charts, I really like that idea. Our 00:02:13.58\00:02:15.70 speaker is of course our pastor, our friend, 00:02:15.71\00:02:18.37 our Bible teacher Ty Gibson, I was told 00:02:18.38\00:02:20.75 to him just a little bit ago. He has been 00:02:20.83\00:02:23.31 given the ability by God to make that 00:02:23.32\00:02:25.89 which is profound, very simple, very plain, 00:02:25.90\00:02:30.22 very use of friendly that is a gift of God 00:02:30.23\00:02:33.67 to take some of the profound things of the 00:02:33.68\00:02:36.37 Bible and make them very simple and very 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.81 plain for those of us who are not geniuses, 00:02:38.82\00:02:40.45 we too can understand the word of God. 00:02:41.00\00:02:42.86 And God has given him that gift, and so 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.30 we expect that the Lord will bless him abundantly 00:02:45.31\00:02:48.51 as he speaks to our hearts this night 00:02:48.52\00:02:50.10 as he did on last evening and the evening before. 00:02:50.11\00:02:53.26 We are thankful that it is not raining and 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.67 pouring as it has been doing before it is 00:02:55.68\00:02:57.86 a cool, dry night and God has bless that is 00:02:57.87\00:03:02.00 nice and warming here and we know that 00:03:02.01\00:03:03.46 His Spirit will warm our hearts. Our music 00:03:03.47\00:03:05.95 ministry is coming from Yvonne Lewis and 00:03:05.96\00:03:08.81 she will be singing His name, but before 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.93 we call her forward and then just in advance 00:03:10.94\00:03:13.06 of the speaker I am gonna ask you to bow 00:03:13.07\00:03:14.71 your heads with me in a word of prayer. 00:03:14.72\00:03:16.27 Gracious Father, we do thank you, we 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.35 thank you for the power of Your love and 00:03:19.36\00:03:21.35 how it does indeed draw us to the precious 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.69 bleeding side of Jesus. We thank you for 00:03:24.70\00:03:28.10 extravagant, extraordinary, special 00:03:28.11\00:03:32.26 love. The kind of love that is committed itself 00:03:32.27\00:03:34.97 to us unworthy children of thine. We thank 00:03:34.98\00:03:38.86 you for the speaker and I ask for him heaven's 00:03:38.87\00:03:43.19 very best, so that he maybe this night a 00:03:43.20\00:03:46.63 conduit of Your love. And that Your love might 00:03:46.64\00:03:50.24 shine through him to us as we understand 00:03:50.25\00:03:53.90 more of Your will for our lives as a loving 00:03:53.91\00:03:57.70 Heavenly Father. Bless the word this night, 00:03:57.71\00:04:01.00 He who gives it, those of us who receive it, 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.94 may Christ be glorified, we love You, 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.31 we praise You and we thank You for 00:04:08.32\00:04:11.09 every good and perfect gift, in Jesus 00:04:11.10\00:04:14.07 name, amen. And now Yvonne Lewis. 00:04:14.08\00:04:17.56 There is a name that is so precious, 00:04:32.88\00:04:39.88 A name so wonderful to me. 00:04:40.45\00:04:46.76 A name that's worthy of all praises. 00:04:47.20\00:04:54.26 Because of him, I am made free. 00:04:54.27\00:05:01.03 And that name is Jesus, oh, how I love him. 00:05:01.04\00:05:08.78 The one who gave his life for me. 00:05:08.79\00:05:15.64 Because of love, so unconditional, 00:05:15.65\00:05:22.48 I will have life, eternally Oh. 00:05:22.49\00:05:40.05 His name speaks peace, to all my storm clouds, 00:05:46.57\00:05:54.35 His name speaks calm, to all my fears. 00:05:54.36\00:06:00.79 And when I think that no one loves me. 00:06:00.80\00:06:08.67 His loving presence is so near. 00:06:08.68\00:06:15.05 And His name is Jesus, oh, how I love him. 00:06:15.06\00:06:22.64 The one who gave his life for me. 00:06:22.65\00:06:29.59 Because of love, so unconditional, 00:06:29.60\00:06:36.69 I will have life, eternally. 00:06:36.70\00:06:44.77 Oh! That name. 00:08:42.47\00:08:59.29 Amen. 00:08:59.30\00:09:00.27 Thank you Yvonne, wow! What a blessing huh? 00:09:04.98\00:09:07.56 Amen. Just lifts your heart. Well, I hope 00:09:07.57\00:09:10.61 you had a fabulous day, did you? Amen. 00:09:10.62\00:09:12.51 I had an excellent day, a lot of great 00:09:12.52\00:09:15.84 thoughts developed during my study time, 00:09:15.85\00:09:18.91 and so I am eager to get into our subject 00:09:18.92\00:09:22.51 for this evening. And I want to do that by 00:09:22.52\00:09:25.25 beginning with a certain experience that 00:09:25.77\00:09:29.17 some of us have, maybe all of us have this 00:09:29.18\00:09:30.95 experience. Have you ever seen something or 00:09:30.96\00:09:35.83 someone that you thought you knew really well, 00:09:35.84\00:09:38.81 maybe for years and years in a whole new light? 00:09:38.82\00:09:42.93 As if you never knew that thing or that person 00:09:43.30\00:09:46.92 before, have you ever had that experience? 00:09:46.93\00:09:49.83 I don't know about you but, but I just 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.96 continually go through this, this experience 00:09:52.97\00:09:57.38 as I age, where I am reacquainting 00:09:57.39\00:10:02.05 myself with subject matter that I thought I 00:10:02.06\00:10:05.11 knew, have you had that experience? Amen. 00:10:05.12\00:10:08.68 And acquainting myself with people that I 00:10:08.69\00:10:12.57 thought I knew well. And, and even geographical 00:10:12.58\00:10:16.87 locations, I mean this happens this, this 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.49 psychological phenomenon happens in 00:10:19.50\00:10:23.68 all different kinds of ways. For example, a 00:10:23.69\00:10:27.59 few years back a friend of mine landed 00:10:27.60\00:10:29.77 in my backyard in a helicopter, which 00:10:29.78\00:10:33.22 was really cool if you think about it to, 00:10:33.23\00:10:34.95 to have a friend with a helicopter is, is pretty 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.26 nifty to begin with, but the house was just 00:10:37.27\00:10:40.96 shaking as he landed and he motioned with 00:10:40.97\00:10:43.81 his hand and my wife and I we ran out into 00:10:43.82\00:10:46.11 backyard, we jumped in this helicopter and 00:10:46.12\00:10:48.59 we went straight up. Now, we had lived in 00:10:48.60\00:10:52.70 this location for many years I knew every 00:10:52.71\00:10:57.76 inch of our own property, which was 20 acres. 00:10:57.77\00:11:00.61 I knew the roads all around because I've 00:11:00.62\00:11:03.08 driven back and forth to the airports nearly 00:11:03.09\00:11:06.21 every week to go to meetings, I knew 00:11:06.22\00:11:09.48 the roads, I knew even the countryside 00:11:09.49\00:11:13.29 because I had done a lot of just wondering 00:11:13.30\00:11:15.22 around and hike. I thought I knew this 00:11:15.23\00:11:16.59 area, but when we lean up in the air in this 00:11:16.60\00:11:19.43 helicopter and began to get the aerial view, 00:11:19.44\00:11:23.56 to really see this place first of all, first 00:11:24.70\00:11:28.40 of all I saw some errors in the, the roofing 00:11:28.41\00:11:31.27 job that I had done myself that I didn't 00:11:31.28\00:11:33.54 know were there on the house, but I began 00:11:33.55\00:11:36.74 to see our property and our area in a way 00:11:36.75\00:11:40.11 I had never seen before and I said something 00:11:40.12\00:11:42.26 to myself the something like wow! So, 00:11:42.27\00:11:44.93 so that's where I lived. I had never seen it 00:11:44.94\00:11:48.47 before from that particular vantage point 00:11:48.48\00:11:50.92 from that angle. So, so we do see things that 00:11:50.93\00:11:54.19 we thought we knew in a whole new light 00:11:54.20\00:11:56.52 sometimes. I remember I was in a hotel and 00:11:56.53\00:12:02.70 this documentary came on, this was also a few 00:12:02.71\00:12:05.83 years back and believe it or not this was 00:12:05.84\00:12:08.64 a documentary about what lives in your eyebrows, 00:12:08.65\00:12:12.57 it is a jungle in there I kid you not. They 00:12:14.32\00:12:18.02 magnified people's eyebrows I don't know 00:12:18.03\00:12:23.45 maybe a million times they magnified what's 00:12:23.46\00:12:27.58 going on in your eyebrows and, and I was 00:12:27.59\00:12:30.74 amazes I sat there watching and saw 00:12:30.75\00:12:34.38 creatures, that that resembled dinosaurs and, 00:12:34.39\00:12:42.48 and crawdads and lizards, just very 00:12:42.49\00:12:46.59 microscopic and small though, but when they 00:12:46.60\00:12:49.29 magnified you see, they're just wondering 00:12:49.30\00:12:51.30 around in your eyebrows grazing, they 00:12:51.31\00:12:54.34 live there and I had this friend at Church, 00:12:54.35\00:12:58.99 a buddy of my, one of the greatest guys 00:12:59.00\00:13:00.74 I have never known and he is deceased now, 00:13:00.75\00:13:02.50 but we used to go get firewood together. 00:13:02.51\00:13:04.52 And I have been wanting to talk him 00:13:05.63\00:13:07.46 about this situation because he had what my 00:13:07.47\00:13:10.02 wife calls a unibrow you know what that is? 00:13:10.03\00:13:14.44 And so, when I sense that the time was 00:13:14.94\00:13:17.88 right and I had just seen this documentary 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.75 after all and I wanted to help my brother out 00:13:19.76\00:13:21.65 I said, I said listen brother, listen if you 00:13:22.19\00:13:24.80 knew what's going on in that bushy thing 00:13:24.81\00:13:29.65 you would let your wife plug it. And I can 00:13:29.77\00:13:33.45 guarantee you she wants too. And she 00:13:33.55\00:13:37.09 will correct the situation if you only 00:13:37.10\00:13:39.59 knew what lives in your eyebrows. For weeks 00:13:39.60\00:13:42.91 after seeing that documentary I found 00:13:42.92\00:13:45.11 myself just, just unconsciously just 00:13:45.12\00:13:47.69 with a reflex just, just, just wondering 00:13:47.70\00:13:51.24 visualizing what's going on in my eyebrows. 00:13:51.25\00:13:54.73 And so, we can see things from a whole new 00:13:54.74\00:13:57.33 perspective, can't we? But that's not the half 00:13:57.34\00:14:01.26 of it, what about people? My daughter Amber 00:14:01.27\00:14:04.52 came into the world 8 pounds, 10 ounces 00:14:04.92\00:14:07.36 out of my wife's 5 foot, 200 pound body, 00:14:07.37\00:14:10.80 this was a monumental event and we 00:14:11.12\00:14:15.33 raised her. I thought I knew my little girl, 00:14:15.34\00:14:17.79 her name is Amber and then the day came when 00:14:19.15\00:14:23.98 she got married, and we were visiting, 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.77 my wife Sue and I were visiting their home 00:14:26.78\00:14:30.68 and I was sitting in a chair in the living room 00:14:31.34\00:14:34.56 and my daughter Amber, now a full grown adult 00:14:35.32\00:14:40.19 woman and her new husband were kind of 00:14:40.20\00:14:44.89 preparing the meal and flirting in the kitchen 00:14:45.40\00:14:48.08 and I thought no, no stop, stop, that's my 00:14:49.42\00:14:52.78 daughter, get your hands off her that's, 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.42 that's what I was going through in my mind, 00:14:55.43\00:14:57.29 it was a very difficult experience to let 00:14:57.30\00:14:59.83 her go, to give her away, to watch her become 00:14:59.84\00:15:03.13 this full grown woman and then you're in the 00:15:03.14\00:15:05.77 kitchen and they are, and all of the sudden 00:15:05.78\00:15:07.25 she grows upon her tiptoes and he is a tall 00:15:07.26\00:15:08.73 guy upon her, and she, she gives him a gentle 00:15:08.74\00:15:11.63 kiss, and I thought can't handle it. My wife 00:15:11.64\00:15:17.51 Sue said she's grown up, she is married, 00:15:17.52\00:15:19.78 you, you need to just get with the program. 00:15:19.79\00:15:23.70 I saw my little girl in a way I had never see 00:15:26.09\00:15:28.76 her before. Now, the full grown woman and next 00:15:28.77\00:15:32.03 thing I knew pretty soon she was a mommy 00:15:32.04\00:15:35.21 and I saw her holding her own son and I 00:15:36.59\00:15:40.95 fell in love with her all over again. I thought 00:15:40.96\00:15:43.72 wow! She is beautiful. My little girl is so 00:15:43.73\00:15:47.93 beautiful. Now, as a woman, as a wife, and 00:15:47.94\00:15:53.37 as a mother, but I've had this experience 00:15:53.38\00:15:57.55 of seeing all over again for the first time most 00:15:57.56\00:16:03.83 of all with my wife. Sue and I have been 00:16:03.84\00:16:06.70 together since she was 13 and I was 14 00:16:06.71\00:16:10.15 we've been best friends. I mean I really think 00:16:10.47\00:16:13.59 I know this chick, but you know what? 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.14 Just before coming here, just literally 00:16:17.13\00:16:21.28 less than two weeks ago I got an angle, 00:16:21.29\00:16:25.76 a perspective on her personality I had 00:16:25.77\00:16:30.48 never seen before and she was more beautiful 00:16:30.49\00:16:34.83 then I had ever known. Parts of her who she 00:16:34.84\00:16:39.88 is just came to the surface in the process 00:16:39.89\00:16:46.22 of a day and certain events and a 00:16:46.23\00:16:49.83 conversation and tears forming in her eyes. 00:16:49.84\00:16:54.49 I knew her suddenly in a way I had never known 00:16:55.29\00:17:00.57 her before; certainly you have that experience, 00:17:00.58\00:17:03.82 right? A place, a topic, a person that you 00:17:03.83\00:17:10.07 thought you knew and you suddenly see as 00:17:10.08\00:17:16.67 it were for the first time all over again. 00:17:16.68\00:17:20.60 Have you had that experience, anybody 00:17:20.61\00:17:22.22 here? Well, tonight I want to bring to you 00:17:22.23\00:17:26.61 a topic that has to be regarded as the most 00:17:27.93\00:17:31.73 familiar topic in Christianity. I want to 00:17:31.74\00:17:36.82 bring to your attention that which we go into 00:17:36.83\00:17:42.59 psychological neutral so easily but as soon as 00:17:42.60\00:17:46.30 the topic is brought up, we think oh! Yeah, 00:17:46.31\00:17:47.61 yeah, yeah I think I'll just take a little, 00:17:47.62\00:17:49.18 a little Nano nap as the preacher talks because 00:17:49.19\00:17:53.70 I have heard this before. May I, may I 00:17:53.71\00:17:57.00 respectfully urge you this evening to 00:17:57.01\00:18:01.00 somehow psychologically and emotionally go into 00:18:01.01\00:18:05.35 a, a place, a position where you assume that 00:18:05.36\00:18:09.74 you have never encountered the 00:18:09.75\00:18:14.11 Cross of Jesus Christ before. This very 00:18:14.12\00:18:17.49 familiar territory we sing about it, the 00:18:17.50\00:18:21.56 preacher preaches about it, but I want to, 00:18:21.57\00:18:23.19 I want to share with you that I think, 00:18:23.20\00:18:24.67 I think that often times we circumvent our 00:18:24.68\00:18:31.37 potential for deeper inside because we 00:18:31.38\00:18:35.57 get locked in to certain aspects of a topic 00:18:35.58\00:18:42.08 and assume that that's all there is. What 00:18:42.69\00:18:45.89 I want to suggest to you is that when it 00:18:45.90\00:18:47.71 come to the Cross of Jesus Christ we often 00:18:47.72\00:18:50.12 times have so focused on the physical dimension 00:18:50.13\00:18:54.36 of the sufferings of Christ, the what 00:18:54.37\00:18:56.54 dimension everybody? The physical dimension. 00:18:56.55\00:18:59.00 We've so focused on the physical dimension 00:18:59.26\00:19:01.92 that we have failed to, to pear within the deep 00:19:01.93\00:19:07.24 interior of the heart of Jesus as He hung 00:19:07.25\00:19:12.36 between heaven and earth. I mean what was 00:19:12.37\00:19:15.10 going on inside of Him, what was the thought 00:19:15.11\00:19:19.99 process, what was the emotional process 00:19:20.00\00:19:23.32 that He was enduring. Do you hear my question? 00:19:23.63\00:19:27.49 Certainly he was physical abused; he was 00:19:28.73\00:19:31.49 tortured, wasn't He? But I would like to you 00:19:31.50\00:19:37.40 to consider the possibility that what 00:19:37.41\00:19:41.14 Jesus endured by way of physical torture 00:19:41.15\00:19:44.93 was by comparison almost nothing compared 00:19:46.74\00:19:53.06 to what He endured in His heart and in His mind 00:19:53.07\00:19:59.24 for you and me. So, allow your mind to access 00:20:00.43\00:20:05.07 the subject tonight as if maybe you have never 00:20:05.08\00:20:08.86 considered it before. Now, last evening we 00:20:08.87\00:20:14.27 conceptually prepared ourselves for where we 00:20:14.77\00:20:18.38 are going tonight? We laid some ground work, 00:20:18.39\00:20:20.88 we introduced some concepts and some ideas 00:20:20.89\00:20:23.83 you remember, we explored the incredible reality 00:20:23.84\00:20:29.47 of the incarnation of Christ. Which is 00:20:30.52\00:20:34.19 preparatory as I pointed out in the Apostle 00:20:34.20\00:20:37.79 Paul, preparatory to the Cross. Jesus literally 00:20:37.80\00:20:42.91 engaged in a, shall we call it a quantum 00:20:43.68\00:20:47.42 leap of transformation. I mean He was God 00:20:47.43\00:20:53.19 and had always been God. Philippians 2 said, 00:20:53.20\00:20:56.93 He was in very nature God. So, this one that 00:20:56.94\00:21:03.09 we are talking about this evening He had 00:21:03.10\00:21:05.20 always been God and only God, forever and 00:21:05.21\00:21:09.32 ever for all eternity past. This was his 00:21:09.33\00:21:13.16 familiar domain of nature. Shear divinity 00:21:13.17\00:21:20.46 in all it's glory, but then, then He, He 00:21:20.47\00:21:27.05 moved not just geographically, not from 00:21:27.32\00:21:30.52 heaven to earth alone, He moved in nature, 00:21:30.53\00:21:35.51 He literally became something He had never 00:21:36.75\00:21:41.01 been before, He became human. The Creator 00:21:41.02\00:21:48.36 of all things became a part of His very 00:21:48.37\00:21:54.38 creation. I mean He is in Mary's womb, He 00:21:54.39\00:22:00.58 comes forth from the womb she begins 00:22:00.59\00:22:03.41 to raise the one who created her. She 00:22:03.42\00:22:09.03 begins to teach and to educate the 00:22:09.04\00:22:13.05 Creator of the Universe, if we can 00:22:13.06\00:22:16.72 comprehend what that would mean? 00:22:16.73\00:22:19.18 Jesus endured; He experienced what we 00:22:20.48\00:22:24.04 refer to last evening as a dramatic fracture, 00:22:24.05\00:22:28.23 a severing, a cutting off between Himself 00:22:28.72\00:22:36.29 and the other members of the Triune God. 00:22:37.04\00:22:39.06 Father, Son and Holy Spirit, these three who 00:22:39.07\00:22:41.71 are one, who had always been together 00:22:41.72\00:22:45.02 in a beautiful ebb and flow of other centered 00:22:45.03\00:22:48.82 self giving love, they had only ever known 00:22:48.83\00:22:51.15 one another's fellowship in the deepest 00:22:51.16\00:22:53.88 intimacy imaginable and Jesus according 00:22:53.89\00:22:57.60 to Scripture. Jesus condescended and stepped 00:22:57.61\00:23:03.66 out of that inner circle of beautiful intimate 00:23:03.67\00:23:07.88 love. He endured what we refer to as a 00:23:07.89\00:23:12.52 transmigration of nature, He became something 00:23:12.53\00:23:18.18 He had never been before, He became 00:23:18.19\00:23:22.53 a member of the human race. Now, the 00:23:23.10\00:23:27.23 Apostle Paul begins to work this subject, 00:23:27.24\00:23:31.03 He begins to finesse it and, and to, 00:23:31.83\00:23:35.13 to bring to the surface of this greatest 00:23:35.14\00:23:38.86 of all mysteries. He begins to develop for 00:23:38.87\00:23:43.31 our understanding just exactly what 00:23:43.32\00:23:45.59 was involved in this amazing reality we 00:23:45.60\00:23:51.67 call the incarnation, that is the enfleshment 00:23:51.68\00:23:54.76 of God. He begins to bring it to the surface. 00:23:54.77\00:23:58.16 Look with me at Hebrews chapter 2, 00:23:58.96\00:24:02.45 we refer to this text last night, but we 00:24:02.46\00:24:04.52 didn't actually read them look at Hebrews 00:24:04.53\00:24:06.22 chapter 2 and in this sacred text the 00:24:06.23\00:24:12.44 Apostle Paul brings to our awareness the 00:24:12.45\00:24:17.60 astounding relationship between the Incarnation 00:24:17.61\00:24:20.58 and the Cross that is the God logic for God 00:24:20.59\00:24:24.72 becoming human. God has an agenda, He is 00:24:24.73\00:24:27.43 up to something, and the first stage of God's 00:24:27.44\00:24:31.57 agenda, His saving plan is to become human. 00:24:31.58\00:24:35.60 This is stage one. So, in verse 9 of Hebrews 00:24:36.04\00:24:39.99 chapter 2 we read these words. But 00:24:40.00\00:24:41.54 we see Jesus, who was made a little lower 00:24:41.55\00:24:46.46 than the angels for, notice the word for 00:24:46.77\00:24:50.30 the suffering of death, crowned with glory 00:24:50.31\00:24:53.91 and honor, that he by the grace of God, 00:24:53.92\00:24:56.14 might taste death for everyone. Note 00:24:56.15\00:25:00.55 grammatically what Paul is saying to us, 00:25:00.56\00:25:03.07 he is saying that Jesus became human 00:25:03.08\00:25:06.42 for the suffering of death. In order of that 00:25:08.33\00:25:12.65 He might experience death as an authentic 00:25:12.66\00:25:17.94 experience, not as a charade, not as a 00:25:17.95\00:25:20.25 projection, not as an illusion He is 00:25:20.26\00:25:23.97 hoping we will believe, but as a concrete 00:25:23.98\00:25:27.95 reality for God. He became human in order 00:25:27.96\00:25:34.17 that He might experience the full ramifications 00:25:34.18\00:25:38.87 of our death. Look at verse 14 he repeats 00:25:38.88\00:25:43.06 himself, but he gets even clearer. In as much 00:25:43.07\00:25:45.53 then as the children have partaken 00:25:45.54\00:25:48.33 of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise 00:25:48.34\00:25:50.80 took part of the same, the same what 00:25:50.81\00:25:52.61 everybody? Flesh and blood, what's the first 00:25:52.62\00:25:56.36 word after the comma? That in order that so 00:25:56.37\00:26:00.44 that He through death might, what? 00:26:00.45\00:26:05.04 Destroy him who had the power of the death, 00:26:05.41\00:26:08.14 that is the devil. So, here's this bridge in 00:26:08.15\00:26:11.16 Paul's understanding. This, this, this bridge 00:26:11.17\00:26:13.40 between incarnation and cross, the incarnation 00:26:13.41\00:26:18.03 creates the necessary metaphysical 00:26:18.40\00:26:22.85 situation in which the almighty creator 00:26:24.05\00:26:27.65 of the universe who can in himself know 00:26:27.66\00:26:29.19 no death. This God who cannot die moves out 00:26:29.20\00:26:35.90 of himself becomes human in order that 00:26:35.91\00:26:41.55 he might submit himself to the circumstances 00:26:41.56\00:26:47.44 that would make it possible for him to 00:26:47.99\00:26:50.00 experientially, authentically undergo an 00:26:50.01\00:26:53.53 experience that in and of himself with a 00:26:53.54\00:26:56.39 completely retained divinity that is not 00:26:56.40\00:27:01.04 grafted to humanity could never ever authentically 00:27:01.05\00:27:05.16 experience and you'll see what I mean more 00:27:05.17\00:27:06.95 as we continue. Now go to Philippians chapter 2, 00:27:06.96\00:27:11.00 you're gonna have to sit up a little straighter 00:27:13.01\00:27:14.36 and breathe a little deeper, because we're 00:27:14.37\00:27:17.44 going to exercise the frontal lobe this 00:27:17.45\00:27:19.63 evening. We are going to be engaging 00:27:19.64\00:27:22.80 in a process of Bible study that opens 00:27:23.10\00:27:27.89 and unveils to us the deep things of God, 00:27:27.90\00:27:30.71 the deep interior of the love of God, 00:27:31.41\00:27:33.74 the extravagant, extraordinary, 00:27:33.75\00:27:36.03 over the top, off the charts love of God. 00:27:36.30\00:27:39.63 And you are gonna want to make sure that 00:27:39.64\00:27:41.82 you prepare yourself for the punch line by 00:27:41.83\00:27:45.05 grasping where we're coming from as we arrive 00:27:45.06\00:27:50.31 at the punch line. Right now we're contemplating 00:27:50.32\00:27:53.40 the practical ramifications of the 00:27:53.63\00:27:56.96 incarnation of God in Christ. Chapter 2 00:27:56.97\00:28:01.32 of Philippians notice verse 5 let this mind 00:28:01.33\00:28:03.68 be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. So, 00:28:03.69\00:28:07.69 now what Paul is about to do, is He is about 00:28:07.70\00:28:10.03 to actually described to us the mind, 00:28:10.04\00:28:12.59 that was in Christ Jesus. Let this mind 00:28:13.33\00:28:15.34 be in you which was also in Christ Jesus and 00:28:15.35\00:28:18.03 here we go, I'm about to describe it for 00:28:18.04\00:28:19.55 you Paul says. This is the disposition, 00:28:19.56\00:28:21.93 the mind, the Spirit, the character that we 00:28:21.94\00:28:24.61 witness in Christ Jesus. Who, being in very 00:28:24.62\00:28:29.29 nature God, did not consider his equality 00:28:29.30\00:28:35.63 with God something to be grasped to held onto, 00:28:35.64\00:28:39.04 I am giving it you from the New International 00:28:39.56\00:28:41.68 Version from memory here, you're probably reading 00:28:41.69\00:28:43.67 the King James, New King James. The New King 00:28:43.68\00:28:46.41 James Version says: Who, being in very form 00:28:46.42\00:28:49.87 God, did not consider it robbery to be equal 00:28:50.50\00:28:54.22 with God. What's that mean robbery? That's 00:28:54.23\00:28:56.09 a little bit too, too arcade, that's the 00:28:56.10\00:28:58.50 Queen's English from 300 years ago, 00:28:58.51\00:29:00.58 there is no way we are going to access that 00:29:00.59\00:29:03.08 just on the surface. Look at me, He didn't 00:29:03.63\00:29:05.83 consider it robbery to be equal with God. 00:29:05.84\00:29:08.01 It was His inherent right, this wasn't 00:29:08.58\00:29:11.10 something that that He, He took by fiat, 00:29:11.11\00:29:13.98 He didn't, He didn't steal this identity, He 00:29:13.99\00:29:17.67 is in very nature who? None other than 00:29:17.68\00:29:20.63 God, but He did not consider this equality 00:29:20.87\00:29:25.35 with God something to be held on, 00:29:25.36\00:29:28.55 to be grasped, His disposition, His 00:29:28.56\00:29:32.13 attitude toward this high state, this divine 00:29:32.14\00:29:35.80 state, His attitude toward it is a 00:29:35.81\00:29:38.57 willingness to just abdicate, to just lay 00:29:38.58\00:29:42.78 it aside. I mean, can you imagine what it 00:29:42.79\00:29:45.32 would like to just be you and be willing 00:29:45.33\00:29:49.61 to lay aside the totality of your history and 00:29:49.62\00:29:54.02 identity and all that you have and possess 00:29:54.03\00:29:57.07 and all that you are by nature to become 00:29:57.08\00:30:02.19 lets say an ant, or a possum or can 00:30:02.20\00:30:09.65 you imagine having the disposition toward 00:30:09.66\00:30:12.80 your humanity that says you know what? 00:30:12.81\00:30:14.71 If it is for the best good of others that 00:30:14.95\00:30:17.38 would be willing to literally lay aside my 00:30:17.39\00:30:19.24 human nature to become a lower life form, 00:30:19.25\00:30:24.29 are you with me? That's right. Okay, 00:30:25.68\00:30:27.45 the distance between what it means to be human 00:30:27.46\00:30:30.77 and what it means to be a possum is a shorter 00:30:30.78\00:30:34.63 distance then what it means to be God and 00:30:34.64\00:30:37.76 to become human. That's right. Okay, Jesus 00:30:37.77\00:30:41.26 who was in Himself God took that quantum leap 00:30:41.27\00:30:46.47 out of eternity past into time and space realities 00:30:46.48\00:30:52.42 where he literally became a human being, 00:30:52.43\00:30:55.98 and He didn't feel a jealous regard for 00:30:55.99\00:30:59.86 holding on to that past status. He was like; 00:30:59.87\00:31:03.19 if that's what it takes I will do it, why? 00:31:03.20\00:31:06.99 Because He has you, He has me, He has 00:31:07.00\00:31:10.01 everybody that you have ever known, and 00:31:10.02\00:31:11.51 everybody you have ever locked eyes with, 00:31:11.52\00:31:13.42 everybody you love, everybody you 00:31:13.43\00:31:15.53 haven't love, He has everyone of us at the 00:31:15.54\00:31:19.10 center of His heart. So, this is the one 00:31:19.11\00:31:23.26 who is equal with God, New International 00:31:23.27\00:31:25.01 Version says: The one who wasn't very 00:31:25.02\00:31:27.57 nature God made Himself nothing. Made 00:31:27.58\00:31:30.94 Himself what everybody? Nothing. Nothing 00:31:30.95\00:31:33.55 by comparison that is. Now, then New American 00:31:33.56\00:31:39.01 Standard Bible renders the Greek here 00:31:39.02\00:31:41.29 differently, but it accesses an idea that 00:31:42.68\00:31:46.30 we need to, to take in. It says: The one 00:31:46.31\00:31:49.46 who was equal with God, New American 00:31:49.47\00:31:51.11 Standard Bible emptied Himself, He did 00:31:51.12\00:31:53.93 what would Himself? He emptied Himself. 00:31:53.94\00:31:56.12 So, so you get the idea that in His divinity 00:31:56.13\00:31:59.97 as God there is content, right? And he empties 00:31:59.98\00:32:07.35 that content. What it means to be equal 00:32:07.36\00:32:12.28 with God, to be in very nature with God? 00:32:12.29\00:32:14.02 What would it mean to be God and to empty 00:32:14.03\00:32:17.53 the content of that divinity? Well, the 00:32:17.54\00:32:21.03 Philips translation does something remarkable 00:32:21.04\00:32:23.29 here with the Greek. The Philips translation 00:32:23.30\00:32:26.09 says: He laid aside His advantages as God. 00:32:26.10\00:32:32.39 His prerogatives, his privileges, those things 00:32:33.19\00:32:38.34 that are shall we say inherent to divinity. 00:32:38.35\00:32:42.90 There is, there is a certain content to being 00:32:43.82\00:32:47.05 God, there are certain attributes, there 00:32:47.06\00:32:50.64 are certain things that are true of God and 00:32:50.65\00:32:52.31 not true of anybody else in the universe, 00:32:52.32\00:32:54.16 you have to be divine to have these things. 00:32:54.78\00:32:57.07 And they fall into three basic categories; 00:32:57.93\00:33:00.13 we refer to them as the three Omnis, Omni 00:33:00.14\00:33:03.70 is Greek for all, there is number one, 00:33:03.71\00:33:07.49 omnipotence, what is potence? Its power, 00:33:07.85\00:33:11.91 so what does it mean to be omnipotent? 00:33:12.42\00:33:14.39 All powerful, that's why he is called the all, 00:33:15.43\00:33:17.77 what? The Almighty. And then what's the 00:33:17.78\00:33:22.56 second Omni, omniscience, what does it mean 00:33:22.57\00:33:26.80 to be omniscient, not that you would know, 00:33:26.81\00:33:28.54 not that I would know, it means to know 00:33:30.01\00:33:32.64 how many things, all things, how often? All 00:33:32.65\00:33:36.70 the time, simultaneously you just happen 00:33:36.71\00:33:39.18 to know everything. God never, God never 00:33:39.19\00:33:43.57 has an Aha moment, let's put it that way. 00:33:43.58\00:33:46.12 God never ever, ever, says whoa! I 00:33:46.60\00:33:49.12 never thought of that before ever, ever. 00:33:49.13\00:33:52.20 He knows everything all the time, 00:33:53.10\00:33:54.99 this is omniscience, nothing ever occurs 00:33:55.00\00:33:57.84 to Him. Okay, what's the third great Omni? 00:33:57.85\00:34:01.79 What's the third Omni? Omnipresence, 00:34:01.80\00:34:04.23 that means that he is how many places, 00:34:05.20\00:34:07.18 everywhere all the time, not in a pantheistic 00:34:07.19\00:34:10.03 sense, He is not present in everything, 00:34:10.04\00:34:12.29 He is present to everything. Okay, He 00:34:12.30\00:34:15.35 is present here right now for example God is, 00:34:15.36\00:34:18.20 but He is also present everywhere 00:34:18.82\00:34:21.93 else geographically in the entire world and 00:34:21.94\00:34:25.47 in the entire universe. Now, these are the 00:34:25.48\00:34:29.28 things that pertain to the divine nature and 00:34:29.29\00:34:33.56 Paul is trying to tell us something here, 00:34:33.57\00:34:35.85 he I saying listen this one who in very nature 00:34:35.86\00:34:40.82 is God, emptied the divine content, He laid 00:34:41.17\00:34:46.51 aside His advantages and prerogatives 00:34:46.52\00:34:49.85 and abilities, you see wait a minute Ty 00:34:49.86\00:34:52.19 this is, this is, are you, are you pushing 00:34:52.20\00:34:54.42 the edges Ty? Are you seriously? No way, 00:34:54.43\00:34:57.10 He didn't do that, did He? Do you really 00:34:57.11\00:34:59.63 want psychologically and emotionally to access 00:34:59.64\00:35:02.84 the magnitude of this extraordinary, 00:35:02.85\00:35:05.39 extravagant love? Do you really want to 00:35:05.40\00:35:07.10 see it, yes or no? Okay, open your mind to what 00:35:07.11\00:35:10.02 Scripture saying here? I will give you clear 00:35:10.03\00:35:12.70 biblical examples of the fact that Jesus 00:35:12.71\00:35:14.81 did lay aside, but say put into remission 00:35:14.82\00:35:18.87 the three Omnis. According to Luke 00:35:20.15\00:35:24.42 chapter 2 the child, that is God in human flesh, 00:35:24.43\00:35:28.09 grew in stature and in wisdom. What does it 00:35:28.10\00:35:33.47 mean to grow in wisdom, to grow in knowledge, 00:35:33.48\00:35:35.34 what does it mean? It means you're learning 00:35:35.35\00:35:37.16 things you didn't what? Know before, you read 00:35:37.17\00:35:39.88 the book Desire of Ages you learn that Jesus 00:35:39.89\00:35:42.42 at 12 years of age went to his first pass over 00:35:42.67\00:35:46.40 feast, he watched the mysterious ceremony 00:35:46.41\00:35:50.92 unfold, there is the Lamb, there's the knife, 00:35:50.93\00:35:54.16 there's the blood flowing, there is the 00:35:54.17\00:35:56.70 fire, there is the sacrifice, and he 00:35:56.71\00:36:00.13 watches and ponders the whole thing and 00:36:00.14\00:36:02.81 we're told in Desire of Ages that it dawned 00:36:02.82\00:36:04.85 on him for the first time as it were that 00:36:04.86\00:36:09.87 that is me, that is symbolically 00:36:09.88\00:36:13.55 representing my destiny and where I am going 00:36:13.56\00:36:15.84 and what I am here for? Mary literally 00:36:15.85\00:36:19.40 had to teach him, he, he had the one, 00:36:19.41\00:36:22.41 the one who inspired the Bible had to memorize 00:36:22.42\00:36:26.44 it. Mary taught Him Isaiah 53 and said, 00:36:26.45\00:36:31.71 Son I don't, I don't really get it, but the 00:36:31.72\00:36:33.55 angel at your birth explained that this has 00:36:33.56\00:36:36.07 something to do with you, oh! We like 00:36:36.08\00:36:38.52 sheep have gone astray, we have turned 00:36:38.53\00:36:40.21 everyone to his own way and the Lord is laid 00:36:40.22\00:36:42.19 on him, son that's you, the inequity of us all, 00:36:42.23\00:36:46.89 it is mommy? Yes, it is, I don't know what 00:36:46.90\00:36:51.11 that means, but you need to allow the 00:36:51.12\00:36:54.83 Holy Spirit to open your mind to your mission 00:36:54.84\00:36:57.02 and who you are? Jesus didn't come into this 00:36:57.39\00:37:00.21 world and just, just at 5 years of age, 00:37:00.22\00:37:02.45 could just go kick back under a sycamore 00:37:02.46\00:37:04.55 tree and reminisce about what life was 00:37:04.56\00:37:06.27 like in heaven before he came here with 00:37:06.28\00:37:08.94 the Father the Holy Spirit and Gabriel 00:37:08.95\00:37:10.45 all the other, oh! I remember when we 00:37:10.46\00:37:12.22 created Mars, no. Jesus came into this world 00:37:12.23\00:37:17.65 then according to the Testimony of Scripture 00:37:17.66\00:37:19.48 he grew in knowledge and wisdom, 00:37:19.49\00:37:22.68 he learned things. He explicitly states 00:37:23.97\00:37:28.90 in the Gospel of Mark and again it is 00:37:28.91\00:37:31.77 recorded in the Gospel of Matthew that 00:37:31.78\00:37:34.94 Jesus told His disciples no man knows, 00:37:34.95\00:37:39.97 no man what everybody? Knows the day nor 00:37:40.42\00:37:44.26 the hour of the coming of the Son of man 00:37:44.27\00:37:47.47 not even myself, but the Father only. 00:37:47.48\00:37:52.02 Who knows the day and the hour of the second 00:37:52.03\00:37:54.74 coming according to Jesus? The Father. 00:37:54.75\00:37:56.64 Does Jesus, when He speaking to His 00:37:56.94\00:37:59.46 disciples at least, does He know? No, 00:37:59.47\00:38:02.76 He explicitly says there are things I don't, 00:38:02.77\00:38:05.63 what? Know that is not omniscience, Jesus 00:38:05.64\00:38:10.22 has laid aside, He has not ceased to be 00:38:10.23\00:38:13.42 divine, He is fully 100% God and His divinity 00:38:13.43\00:38:18.66 has now been fused with or grafted into a 00:38:18.67\00:38:24.10 very real living humanity. And that 00:38:24.11\00:38:27.00 humanity is during His earthly experience 00:38:27.01\00:38:30.54 that humanity is superseding His 00:38:30.55\00:38:33.34 divinity. He is allowed the divine abilities 00:38:33.35\00:38:37.26 and powers by voluntary choice to go into 00:38:37.27\00:38:39.62 remission my friends. What about 00:38:39.63\00:38:41.34 omnipotence, so you laid at aside? Absolutely, 00:38:41.35\00:38:44.11 John chapter 5, the Lord Jesus Christ said, 00:38:44.12\00:38:47.24 I can of my own self do nothing, that is 00:38:47.25\00:38:51.14 nothing an omnipotence statement, 00:38:51.15\00:38:53.01 that is a human being saying I am utterly 00:38:53.02\00:38:56.17 dependent upon the Father for all these 00:38:56.18\00:38:58.24 miracles you see me doing, I raise the dead 00:38:58.25\00:39:00.70 by the power of the Father's omnipotence 00:39:00.71\00:39:03.33 channeling through me. I heal the sick 00:39:03.34\00:39:06.82 by the Father's power and that's why 00:39:06.83\00:39:09.24 by the way the disciples could turn 00:39:09.25\00:39:11.00 around and do the same things and they 00:39:11.01\00:39:12.79 weren't God. Jesus modeled for them 00:39:12.80\00:39:15.62 and accessing of divine power, when you come 00:39:16.26\00:39:20.99 to Acts chapter 2 when Peter is preaching 00:39:21.00\00:39:24.40 he says, we testify to you this Jesus Christ 00:39:24.41\00:39:27.21 who did many signs and wonders, which God 00:39:27.22\00:39:32.93 did through him? It was the Father's 00:39:32.94\00:39:37.37 omnipotence acting in the human personhood 00:39:37.38\00:39:42.14 of Jesus Christ that we witness, are you with 00:39:42.15\00:39:44.37 me so far? And the same as true and for 00:39:44.38\00:39:47.10 the sake of time I won't go there, 00:39:47.11\00:39:48.36 the same as true of omnipresence. 00:39:48.37\00:39:50.40 Jesus was local to time space consideration 00:39:50.41\00:39:54.55 when He was in this world. This is the 00:39:55.15\00:39:57.47 essence of what Paul is telling us in his 00:39:57.48\00:40:00.53 treatment of the incarnation in Hebrews 00:40:00.54\00:40:02.89 chapter 2 and Philippians chapter 2. 00:40:02.90\00:40:05.63 So, he says that, Jesus emptied himself 00:40:06.77\00:40:10.29 of this divine content, why? He goes on 00:40:10.70\00:40:14.51 and He says in chapter 2 Philippians still, 00:40:14.52\00:40:17.23 but made himself nothing of no reputation, 00:40:18.89\00:40:22.04 taking the form of a servant and coming in 00:40:22.05\00:40:25.40 the likeness of man and being found in 00:40:25.41\00:40:28.65 appearance as a man, He humbled Himself 00:40:28.66\00:40:31.24 and became obedient unto death even 00:40:31.25\00:40:35.56 the death of the Cross. Do you see Paul does 00:40:35.57\00:40:37.49 it again? Just like he did in chapter 2 00:40:37.50\00:40:39.81 of Hebrews, Paul says there is a, 00:40:39.82\00:40:42.52 a bridge of understanding that we need to 00:40:42.53\00:40:44.76 have between the Incarnation and 00:40:44.77\00:40:46.12 the Cross. He became human, 00:40:46.13\00:40:48.00 He emptied Himself, so that an authentic 00:40:48.13\00:40:51.37 self sacrific could be made, 00:40:52.53\00:40:54.44 so that we could behold it and stand in all 00:40:54.70\00:40:57.16 and wonder at the love of God. 00:40:57.17\00:41:00.04 Because think about it for a moment, 00:41:00.73\00:41:02.06 if Jesus had retained omniscience and 00:41:03.31\00:41:08.79 omnipresence during His time in this world. 00:41:08.80\00:41:12.39 Got that so far? And then He having 00:41:13.51\00:41:17.34 omniscience and omnipresence fully 00:41:17.98\00:41:20.88 operable went to the Cross and cried 00:41:20.89\00:41:23.01 out my God, my God why have you forsaken me? 00:41:23.02\00:41:25.17 What would it mean? Approximately nothing, 00:41:25.24\00:41:28.00 I mean think about it because in the moment 00:41:29.19\00:41:32.07 of the cry of despair and the feeling of 00:41:32.17\00:41:35.07 separation and forsakenness He 00:41:35.08\00:41:38.13 would have simultaneously 00:41:38.14\00:41:39.59 have been transcending the event, 00:41:39.60\00:41:42.10 He would have simultaneously 00:41:44.00\00:41:45.27 have been in heaven with the Father 00:41:45.28\00:41:48.09 if He were in that moment omnipresent, 00:41:48.33\00:41:50.62 He would have simultaneously 00:41:51.76\00:41:53.24 been on the other side of the experience 00:41:53.25\00:41:55.46 if he had omniscience, transcending the 00:41:56.00\00:41:58.28 event and knowing exactly what the 00:41:58.29\00:41:59.97 outcome would be? The sacrifice would 00:41:59.98\00:42:02.83 have been rendered absolutely meaningless 00:42:02.84\00:42:08.05 if the incarnation were not an authentic 00:42:08.22\00:42:11.74 condescension, but it was, 00:42:11.83\00:42:14.55 He literally did become human, 00:42:15.07\00:42:17.41 it was an authentic condescension my 00:42:17.70\00:42:19.73 friends and He became human, 00:42:19.74\00:42:21.50 so that He could experience the full 00:42:21.67\00:42:25.97 ramifications of the sin problem that you 00:42:25.98\00:42:31.15 and I experience and ultimately will 00:42:31.16\00:42:34.26 experience, but His grace save us from 00:42:34.27\00:42:39.25 the ultimate consequence. So, Jesus in our 00:42:39.26\00:42:44.03 humanity now finds Himself at the final few 00:42:44.04\00:42:50.64 days of His experience in our world as our Savior. 00:42:50.65\00:42:53.88 He is walking with His disciples, 00:42:55.00\00:42:56.63 I'm in chapter 26 of the Gospel of Matthew, 00:42:56.64\00:42:58.91 He is walking with His disciples up a 00:42:59.16\00:43:02.61 dusty path into the Garden of Gethsemane 00:43:02.62\00:43:06.59 we're told and you can figure this out 00:43:07.13\00:43:09.56 if you understand the calendars of the Hebrew 00:43:09.57\00:43:13.37 people and the fact that Passover was 00:43:13.38\00:43:15.55 about to happen, it was a full moon 00:43:15.56\00:43:17.01 they could see his person and Jesus began 00:43:17.98\00:43:21.24 to stagger under the weight of some kind of 00:43:21.25\00:43:23.45 unseen burden according to Scripture. 00:43:23.67\00:43:27.37 Peter, James, and John were taken deeper 00:43:28.92\00:43:30.92 into the heart of the Garden wit him as he 00:43:31.08\00:43:33.04 told the other disciples to remain in a certain 00:43:33.05\00:43:34.91 place and pray. And as they walked 00:43:34.92\00:43:38.32 and he staggered and stumbled unto no 00:43:38.33\00:43:41.39 apparent physical trauma, nobody had laid a 00:43:41.40\00:43:45.38 hand on his physical body as of yet, 00:43:45.39\00:43:47.04 Jesus is staggering and the disciples wonder 00:43:49.20\00:43:53.18 and whisper among themselves, 00:43:53.83\00:43:55.00 what's wrong with the master, 00:43:55.01\00:43:56.03 why is he so burdened? And Jesus breaks in to 00:43:56.04\00:44:00.76 their wondering He says, He tells them the 00:44:00.77\00:44:03.11 mystery, the secret of His agony. 00:44:03.12\00:44:07.03 He says my soul is exceedingly sorrowful 00:44:08.64\00:44:13.35 even unto death. My what everybody? 00:44:13.68\00:44:17.82 My soul, now you know what the word soul 00:44:17.83\00:44:20.14 means in scripture, don't you I don't need 00:44:20.15\00:44:22.66 to take the time to define that? 00:44:22.67\00:44:25.35 The word soul in scripture means being 00:44:26.67\00:44:29.11 that means the totality of personhood, 00:44:29.12\00:44:31.45 that means all that you are, 00:44:31.65\00:44:32.62 the physical dimension, the emotional dimension, 00:44:32.63\00:44:35.06 the psychological dimension, 00:44:35.25\00:44:36.63 it's the whole person, that's the word soul 00:44:37.00\00:44:39.97 in scripture. Here when we come 00:44:40.16\00:44:42.45 to the New Testament it is homing in on a 00:44:42.46\00:44:45.48 certain dimension of personhood, of being. 00:44:45.49\00:44:49.62 The word that is chosen here for soul in Gospel 00:44:50.42\00:44:53.77 is the Greek word psyche; 00:44:53.78\00:44:55.63 it's what Greek word everybody? 00:44:56.43\00:44:57.64 Psyche from which we get the English word 00:44:58.20\00:45:00.19 psyche that's right. And it refers to what 00:45:01.23\00:45:05.08 dimension of human experience, the mind, 00:45:05.09\00:45:07.92 the hearts, the internal content. 00:45:07.93\00:45:11.15 Jesus says I want you to know what I am 00:45:11.45\00:45:13.26 experiencing, my soul, my mind, 00:45:13.27\00:45:16.48 my hearts is exceedingly sorrowful to the point 00:45:16.49\00:45:21.05 of death. There is something of a lethal 00:45:21.32\00:45:25.73 nature going on inside of me. 00:45:25.99\00:45:29.05 In other words, Jesus has not 00:45:29.53\00:45:32.98 experience any physical tortured yet, 00:45:32.99\00:45:34.92 yes or no? None, not one drop of blood 00:45:34.93\00:45:37.86 has been drawn from His flesh by brutality. 00:45:37.87\00:45:41.33 The crown of thorns has not been pressed 00:45:41.61\00:45:43.33 on his brow. The nails have not 00:45:43.34\00:45:46.05 been driven through His hands. 00:45:46.06\00:45:47.42 And yet Jesus in the quietude of a midnight 00:45:47.98\00:45:50.70 serene garden says I am dying on the inside. 00:45:50.71\00:45:57.72 Something is going on inside of me that 00:45:58.70\00:46:01.11 is taking my life away, I am exceedingly 00:46:01.12\00:46:06.04 sorrowful to the point of death. 00:46:06.05\00:46:08.90 And then Jesus unveils through a metaphor 00:46:09.04\00:46:13.56 what he's going through? He falls to the ground 00:46:13.57\00:46:17.30 and He clutches at the earth, 00:46:18.01\00:46:20.03 ripping at it with His fingers because 00:46:21.01\00:46:24.66 of the sense of separation that he is 00:46:24.99\00:46:27.24 enduring between Himself and the Father. 00:46:27.25\00:46:30.52 And as He is there upon the ground 00:46:32.65\00:46:35.29 He prays a prayer, if it be possible Father 00:46:36.03\00:46:40.74 let this, what's the metaphor He uses? 00:46:41.00\00:46:43.05 Let this cup pass from me nevertheless 00:46:43.40\00:46:45.78 not as I will, but as your cup, what cup? 00:46:45.79\00:46:48.75 This cup is mentioned other places in 00:46:49.37\00:46:50.64 the Bible, the one you will be most familiar 00:46:50.65\00:46:52.70 with this in the Third Angels Message 00:46:52.71\00:46:54.06 it is there called the cup of the wine of the 00:46:54.07\00:46:57.68 wrath of God, which is poured out without 00:46:57.69\00:47:00.21 mixture of mercy that is into the cup of 00:47:00.53\00:47:03.56 His indignation. This is the full ramifications 00:47:03.57\00:47:08.35 of justice, undiluted righteousness and 00:47:08.36\00:47:14.33 holiness with no buffer of mercy between. 00:47:14.34\00:47:18.10 This is Jesus telling us that He holds in His 00:47:19.98\00:47:22.48 hand a cup of infinite magnitude suffering 00:47:22.49\00:47:27.84 that no human being has ever, ever, ever 00:47:29.17\00:47:31.60 experienced. And He has this cup in 00:47:31.61\00:47:35.85 His hand and He says nevertheless Father, 00:47:35.86\00:47:39.49 I don't want to drink this, 00:47:39.79\00:47:41.14 I don't want to endure this, 00:47:41.15\00:47:42.68 I feel myself slipping away from You, 00:47:42.91\00:47:45.39 the separation is intense. Nevertheless, 00:47:45.70\00:47:52.49 and in not nevertheless He sees 00:47:53.65\00:47:56.90 you and He sees me. Nevertheless, 00:47:56.91\00:48:01.18 if this is what it takes to save them, 00:48:01.90\00:48:06.63 even this I am willing to endure? 00:48:07.56\00:48:10.02 Jesus then arises from this suffering in the 00:48:11.49\00:48:17.22 garden and He has taken to the Cross of Calvary. 00:48:17.23\00:48:23.14 The physical suffering is intense it's brutal, 00:48:24.27\00:48:26.84 it's hard to contemplate and that Jesus never 00:48:29.28\00:48:33.63 utters a complaint about what's done 00:48:33.64\00:48:36.66 to His body. Never, never people, people, 00:48:36.67\00:48:39.06 why are you torching me? But He does cry out 00:48:39.07\00:48:42.52 from the depths of His divine human soul, 00:48:42.53\00:48:45.54 my God, my God where are You? 00:48:46.32\00:48:50.28 Why have You forsaken me? 00:48:52.07\00:48:53.38 The sense of abandonment, 00:48:55.03\00:48:56.39 this chasm of separation, 00:48:57.30\00:48:58.78 this most awful and horrific of all 00:49:00.44\00:49:04.34 experiences imaginable, my God, 00:49:04.35\00:49:08.77 my God where are You? Jesus in His heart 00:49:08.78\00:49:12.95 and in His mind turned with me to Psalm 88 00:49:12.96\00:49:16.72 as I prep you for it, Jesus in His heart 00:49:17.54\00:49:19.98 and in His mind is undergoing an experience 00:49:19.99\00:49:24.09 that has a certain, a certain content to it, 00:49:24.10\00:49:27.67 it has, it has a specific kind of color 00:49:29.04\00:49:35.57 and contour to it, Jesus is going through 00:49:35.58\00:49:38.50 something. What is He going through 00:49:38.51\00:49:41.11 my friends? Psalm 88 is a 00:49:41.12\00:49:44.04 messianic prophecy, it's what kind of 00:49:44.59\00:49:46.86 prophecy everybody? Messianic that means 00:49:46.87\00:49:49.30 it's foretelling who the Messiah. 00:49:49.31\00:49:51.92 It is a prophecy that foretells what 00:49:52.81\00:49:55.76 Jesus goes through psychologically 00:49:55.77\00:49:58.39 and emotionally on the Cross. 00:49:58.40\00:50:00.10 This chapter in Psalms, Psalm 88 draws 00:50:01.04\00:50:05.12 the veil aside, so that we can, 00:50:05.13\00:50:07.18 we can look into the mental and emotional 00:50:07.58\00:50:11.07 process of Jesus as He hangs between 00:50:11.08\00:50:13.79 heaven and earth. There in the New 00:50:13.80\00:50:15.77 Testament all we hear is, let this cup pass from 00:50:15.78\00:50:18.91 me and my God, my God why have You forsaken me? 00:50:18.92\00:50:21.67 But here is what's going on? 00:50:21.91\00:50:23.18 I am in Psalm 88 verse 2, he says: 00:50:23.40\00:50:28.12 My soul is full of troubles and My life 00:50:28.55\00:50:34.98 draws near to grave. I am counted with 00:50:34.99\00:50:39.05 those who go down into the pit; 00:50:39.06\00:50:42.20 I am as a man who has no strength. 00:50:44.00\00:50:46.51 Adrift among the dead, like the slain who lie 00:50:46.99\00:50:54.84 in the grave? This is astounding whom You 00:50:55.32\00:51:00.67 remember no more. Father, I feel like I am 00:51:01.33\00:51:07.23 sinking into a pit of death from which You 00:51:07.24\00:51:12.81 will never remember me again, 00:51:12.82\00:51:15.54 from which You will never call me forth in 00:51:15.71\00:51:18.90 resurrection life. This is second death 00:51:18.91\00:51:22.06 language. This is a death in which there 00:51:22.07\00:51:25.67 is no more remembrance of the individual 00:51:25.68\00:51:28.40 and God's mind. Look at verse 6 amazing. 00:51:28.41\00:51:33.98 You have laid me in, which pit. 00:51:35.23\00:51:38.49 The lowest pit in darkness, 00:51:39.40\00:51:40.37 in the depths. Your wrath is heavy upon me, 00:51:43.43\00:51:49.38 what is this darkness? You have laid me in 00:51:50.52\00:51:53.68 the lowest pit in darkness, 00:51:53.69\00:51:55.06 is this turn the lights out blow the candles 00:51:55.07\00:51:57.37 out kind of, sun down kind of darkness. 00:51:57.38\00:51:59.40 No, no, no this is mental and emotional darkness. 00:52:00.08\00:52:03.29 This is, this is the darkness of what it 00:52:03.64\00:52:05.69 feels like to be guilty, and filled with shame 00:52:05.70\00:52:10.74 and dread of sin. This is what it feels 00:52:10.93\00:52:16.33 like to know your sin with perfect acuity 00:52:16.34\00:52:21.51 and feel no buffer of mercy in between. 00:52:23.66\00:52:26.21 No sense of forgiveness, no compassion, 00:52:27.58\00:52:30.59 all you see in your heart and your mind 00:52:30.94\00:52:32.68 is just justice and holiness and 00:52:32.99\00:52:35.38 righteousness and its eternal distinction 00:52:35.39\00:52:39.08 from sin. It's infinite and it feels it to 00:52:39.09\00:52:45.12 the depths of His being, verse 8. 00:52:45.13\00:52:48.99 This is the climax. You have put mine 00:52:50.03\00:52:53.43 acquaintance far from me, 00:52:53.44\00:52:55.58 watch this, you have made me an abomination 00:52:55.83\00:52:59.05 to them: I am shut up, and I cannot get out. 00:52:59.06\00:53:05.08 That's King James, New King James, 00:53:05.35\00:53:06.85 I am shut up, and I can't what everybody, 00:53:06.86\00:53:09.97 get out. New International Version 00:53:10.60\00:53:12.44 says something to the effect I am confined 00:53:12.85\00:53:15.71 in oblivion and cannot escape. 00:53:15.72\00:53:18.65 What does it mean? When he says I am, 00:53:20.96\00:53:22.87 I am shut up, shut up where, 00:53:22.88\00:53:24.82 what's the context? In this pit of darkness, 00:53:25.11\00:53:28.63 in this utter and complete sense of 00:53:29.22\00:53:30.74 separation from God, my God, my God 00:53:30.75\00:53:34.20 why have You forsaken me? 00:53:34.21\00:53:36.44 I am shut up in that separation from God 00:53:36.45\00:53:40.37 and all the collective hold of human 00:53:40.38\00:53:43.91 transgression and sin is owned by me 00:53:43.92\00:53:46.99 as if I were the guilty pardon, 00:53:47.00\00:53:49.11 every sin ever committed. I bare all of that, 00:53:49.12\00:53:53.48 the whole load and it has separated me 00:53:53.49\00:53:57.32 from My Father and I am shut up in this 00:53:57.33\00:54:01.99 deep dark psychological place, 00:54:02.00\00:54:03.95 and I feel like I will never ever get out. 00:54:06.01\00:54:09.35 What is this language? If you are dead and 00:54:10.52\00:54:14.92 you can't get out of death, 00:54:14.93\00:54:16.83 what are we referring to here? 00:54:17.73\00:54:18.70 Resurrection and so we come down to verse 00:54:18.71\00:54:23.13 10 and He muses as He hangs on the Cross. 00:54:23.70\00:54:27.04 Will your work, excuse me. 00:54:27.87\00:54:30.67 Will You work wonders for the dead? 00:54:30.68\00:54:32.80 Shall the dead, what everybody? 00:54:32.81\00:54:35.12 Arise to praise You? What about verse 11? 00:54:35.58\00:54:40.57 Shall Your loving kindness be declared 00:54:42.13\00:54:44.44 in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in 00:54:44.45\00:54:46.52 the place of, what? Destruction, 00:54:46.53\00:54:49.30 second death language again. 00:54:49.63\00:54:51.02 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? 00:54:52.03\00:54:53.85 And Your righteousness in the land of 00:54:54.83\00:54:56.68 forgetfulness? God, are you going to 00:54:57.91\00:55:00.42 forget me for eternity? I am sinking into a 00:55:01.05\00:55:04.38 death from which it appears there is no 00:55:04.39\00:55:06.96 resurrection, will you ever call me 00:55:06.97\00:55:08.91 forth from the grave? Jesus, 00:55:08.92\00:55:12.16 my friends came in to our world took our 00:55:13.09\00:55:18.89 humanity upon Himself and submitted to all 00:55:18.90\00:55:21.50 its inherent limitations. And then He went to 00:55:21.51\00:55:26.42 the Cross and He entered into the deep 00:55:26.43\00:55:30.86 dark physiological place of guilt and shame 00:55:31.69\00:55:34.60 and sin, so that He felt to the depths 00:55:34.61\00:55:38.19 of His being what it means to be cut off 00:55:38.20\00:55:42.83 and severed and sundered from God, 00:55:43.45\00:55:46.10 he felt it. And that any point in the process, 00:55:47.03\00:55:51.53 scripture tells us, He tells us, 00:55:52.83\00:55:54.69 He could have called 12 legions of angels 00:55:56.02\00:55:59.55 to deliver Himself, but the Bible says that 00:55:59.56\00:56:03.33 He loved them and that is us. 00:56:03.34\00:56:07.49 Chapter 13 verse 1 of the Gospel of John, 00:56:08.07\00:56:09.94 He love them to then end, 00:56:09.95\00:56:12.04 to the end of Himself my friends, 00:56:12.91\00:56:15.68 to the utter and complete end of Himself. 00:56:16.48\00:56:19.71 Jesus literally faced the prospect of eternal 00:56:19.72\00:56:23.62 damnation, never to see the light of day 00:56:23.63\00:56:26.58 again and He voluntarily for shear love, 00:56:26.59\00:56:30.50 extravagant love for you and me was 00:56:30.51\00:56:33.76 willing to die forever, so that you and I 00:56:33.77\00:56:37.12 could have eternal life. We witness at the Cross 00:56:37.13\00:56:40.66 God's value system, and astoundingly 00:56:41.05\00:56:44.80 He literally values all others above 00:56:44.85\00:56:47.53 and before Himself. And in the beautiful 00:56:47.54\00:56:51.47 way that convinces us that we are in 00:56:51.48\00:56:56.11 the best of all imaginable universes, 00:56:56.12\00:56:59.95 governed by a God of infinite other centered 00:57:00.84\00:57:03.66 love and we can forever trust explicitly 00:57:03.67\00:57:08.13 and never be disappointed. 00:57:08.98\00:57:11.22 God loves you tonight with an extraordinary, 00:57:11.83\00:57:14.68 extravagant love and the Cross proves it. 00:57:14.69\00:57:17.54 Father in heaven, we love You because 00:57:18.09\00:57:23.53 You have first loved us. I pray that we love 00:57:23.54\00:57:27.82 You tonight in a new way with new vision. 00:57:27.83\00:57:30.17
