It takes a preacher 00:08:24.16\00:08:27.90 an hour to communicate what can be brought 00:08:27.91\00:08:31.54 for forth in two or three minutes 00:08:31.55\00:08:33.80 in a song because in a song there's 00:08:33.81\00:08:37.42 that beautiful intersection between 00:08:37.43\00:08:40.24 mind and heart. You know what I am 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.21 talking about don't you, 00:08:42.22\00:08:43.29 well it just reaches down into you 00:08:43.30\00:08:45.67 and opens not only your thinking process, 00:08:45.68\00:08:49.74 but opens your emotions to God. 00:08:49.75\00:08:53.39 And I just, I so appreciate 00:08:53.40\00:08:54.73 music for that reason. 00:08:54.74\00:08:56.82 Well this evening where I am embarking 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.30 on a five part series, 00:08:59.31\00:09:01.57 I think you know that, 00:09:01.58\00:09:02.96 and we've given this series a title 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.01 that I hope is somewhat provocative for you. 00:09:06.02\00:09:09.02 I hope it just draws you in but I have to say 00:09:09.03\00:09:11.88 that I know its going to put some off. 00:09:11.89\00:09:15.00 Some are going to look at this title 00:09:15.01\00:09:17.34 of this five part series and say you know 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.93 are we suppose to be talking about 00:09:19.94\00:09:21.61 the Three Angels messages or maybe 00:09:21.62\00:09:24.10 the book of Revelation, 00:09:24.11\00:09:25.50 or shouldn't we be launching into some 00:09:25.51\00:09:27.42 final events series or something like that. 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.64 I want to tell you that I believe with 00:09:30.65\00:09:32.84 all my heart in the power of the prophecies 00:09:32.85\00:09:37.74 of Daniel in Revelation. 00:09:37.75\00:09:39.02 I can't even do justice to how deeply 00:09:39.03\00:09:43.80 I feel about the relevance 00:09:43.81\00:09:47.12 of these prophecies. 00:09:47.13\00:09:48.10 But I want to tell you something else 00:09:48.11\00:09:49.79 that as we begin this ongoing 00:09:49.80\00:09:52.83 Anchors of Truth series, 00:09:52.84\00:09:55.27 there is an anchor that reaches deeper 00:09:55.28\00:09:59.23 than any other, and that is 00:09:59.24\00:10:02.28 the love of God. We're going to be 00:10:02.29\00:10:05.47 exploring the power of God's love 00:10:05.48\00:10:08.90 in a way that I hope will open and expand 00:10:08.91\00:10:12.40 our understanding to just what the Bible means 00:10:12.41\00:10:15.01 when it uses this word. 00:10:15.02\00:10:16.38 So, so let's begin our five part series 00:10:16.39\00:10:20.22 together this evening by defining our terms. 00:10:20.23\00:10:24.98 As I said our title for the whole series 00:10:24.99\00:10:28.13 is extravagant love. Now the word extravagant 00:10:28.14\00:10:31.40 think about it for a minute, 00:10:31.41\00:10:32.51 it's a word that sometimes 00:10:32.52\00:10:35.23 people don't know how to wrap their minds around, 00:10:35.24\00:10:38.25 in fact just before beginning tonight 00:10:38.26\00:10:41.15 somebody came to me and said 00:10:41.16\00:10:42.99 now what's this series is about? 00:10:43.00\00:10:44.74 What was is it extenuating love. 00:10:44.75\00:10:47.47 No I said its not extenuating love; 00:10:47.48\00:10:49.33 they said is it, is it, is it exceptional, 00:10:49.34\00:10:51.99 is that the word, I can't remember, 00:10:52.00\00:10:53.77 is it exceptional love? 00:10:53.78\00:10:55.00 I said that's getting close, 00:10:55.01\00:10:56.05 is it extreme? Well, yeah it is extreme 00:10:56.06\00:11:00.02 but that's not the word that I gave 00:11:00.03\00:11:01.99 in the title the word is extravagant. 00:11:02.00\00:11:05.94 And if you think about some synonyms 00:11:05.95\00:11:08.01 for that words or words that would be 00:11:08.02\00:11:10.15 in the vocabulary proximity 00:11:10.16\00:11:13.64 if you will of the word extravagant. 00:11:13.65\00:11:16.61 You would come with words like, 00:11:16.62\00:11:18.06 like lavish, do you like that word, 00:11:18.07\00:11:21.90 or how about this one luxurious, 00:11:21.91\00:11:25.33 ooh I like that word, 00:11:25.34\00:11:27.36 how about this one? 00:11:27.37\00:11:28.38 This is not a word that is 00:11:28.39\00:11:30.25 commonly in use today in our vocabulary, 00:11:30.26\00:11:33.35 how about the word posh? 00:11:33.36\00:11:35.54 You like that word too I like that one a lot, 00:11:35.55\00:11:39.06 and how about this? 00:11:39.07\00:11:41.18 Extravagant love is radical love, 00:11:41.19\00:11:47.09 it is in fact extreme or we could say this 00:11:47.10\00:11:51.10 way it is over, what do we say, 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.81 over the top, it's over the top, 00:11:53.82\00:11:56.73 it supersedes our expectations, 00:11:56.74\00:12:02.08 it's beyond what we would normally comprehend. 00:12:02.09\00:12:06.62 We don't on a daily bases reside in mental 00:12:06.63\00:12:11.18 and emotional territory that they just quickly 00:12:11.19\00:12:15.04 and easily understands the magnitude 00:12:15.05\00:12:18.68 of God's love. It is truly enormous in its scope, 00:12:18.69\00:12:24.55 as we are going to learn, 00:12:24.56\00:12:25.53 it is universal in its embrace. 00:12:25.54\00:12:29.17 It takes in literarily every man, 00:12:29.18\00:12:31.52 woman and child but that love that is so posh 00:12:31.53\00:12:37.29 and extreme and lavish, 00:12:37.30\00:12:40.07 that love that is radical beyond any humans 00:12:40.08\00:12:46.32 ability to describe. 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.57 That love is not only universal, 00:12:47.58\00:12:50.61 it is also we are going to be discovering it is 00:12:50.62\00:12:53.68 empowering. In other words once you drink it 00:12:53.69\00:12:57.07 in to your mind and heart, 00:12:57.08\00:12:58.77 once you give it access to your thinking process, 00:12:58.78\00:13:02.24 once you allow it to make its impact on your deep 00:13:02.25\00:13:07.32 interior as a human being, 00:13:07.33\00:13:08.90 now what Paul called in Ephesians 3, 00:13:08.91\00:13:11.45 the inner man, the inner person, 00:13:11.46\00:13:13.57 once you let that love have access 00:13:13.58\00:13:16.92 to the deep inner person that you are, 00:13:16.93\00:13:21.01 it will radically transform your life 00:13:21.02\00:13:26.22 and all your relationships. 00:13:26.23\00:13:28.35 So, so this is getting in the proximity, 00:13:28.36\00:13:32.50 in the neighborhood of what we mean 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.70 when we employ the word extravagant. 00:13:34.71\00:13:38.16 But what about this word love? 00:13:38.17\00:13:40.44 What about the word love? 00:13:40.45\00:13:42.40 I want to tell you right at the outset, 00:13:42.41\00:13:44.68 the word love is problematic. 00:13:44.69\00:13:47.13 It is a word that has a baggage; 00:13:47.14\00:13:52.85 it has freight, its carrying with it some 00:13:52.86\00:13:57.34 connotations that do not always set 00:13:57.35\00:14:02.27 well or at least clear in the human mind 00:14:02.28\00:14:05.69 and heart. And the reason for this 00:14:05.70\00:14:08.24 is because the word love has in our 00:14:08.25\00:14:12.75 popular culture nearly being slaughtered 00:14:12.76\00:14:15.59 beyond recognition. I mean the word is so 00:14:15.60\00:14:19.27 loosely used, and so ill used 00:14:19.28\00:14:23.05 that we scarcely know what it means anymore? 00:14:23.06\00:14:27.67 I'll just demonstrate the problem for you, 00:14:27.68\00:14:29.87 in the course of just a few hours 00:14:29.88\00:14:31.62 you might hear me say I love surfing, 00:14:31.63\00:14:33.85 and I do, you might hear me say 00:14:33.86\00:14:36.96 twenty minutes later, oh, I love tacos, 00:14:36.97\00:14:40.12 and I do, and then right on the heels of those 00:14:40.13\00:14:44.51 two same that you might hear me say 00:14:44.52\00:14:46.05 and I love my wife Sue. 00:14:46.06\00:14:48.26 But immediately your feeling the dissonance 00:14:48.27\00:14:52.17 that I am feeling, I'm feeling like but 00:14:52.18\00:14:55.32 wait a minute there are ought to be some 00:14:55.33\00:14:57.15 discernable margin of difference between 00:14:57.16\00:15:00.68 my wife and tacos. Right, 00:15:00.69\00:15:03.41 are you feeling not? 00:15:03.42\00:15:04.99 In fact if I were to say in the same breath, 00:15:05.00\00:15:08.69 in the same sentence, 00:15:08.70\00:15:10.46 I love tacos and baby I love you too, 00:15:10.47\00:15:13.64 she might say please Ty, 00:15:13.65\00:15:17.85 please could you at least separate them 00:15:17.86\00:15:20.26 in some fashion, okay. 00:15:20.27\00:15:23.45 But then to complicate matters I love surfing, 00:15:23.46\00:15:26.53 I love tacos, I love my wife, 00:15:26.54\00:15:29.61 I love God and God loves me. 00:15:29.62\00:15:35.32 Now suddenly I'm really feeling like there 00:15:35.33\00:15:40.88 needs to be some kind of clear distinction 00:15:40.89\00:15:45.24 because our popular culture has for all intents 00:15:45.25\00:15:49.43 and purposes drained this word of its meaning. 00:15:49.44\00:15:53.56 So that when we hear the word love, 00:15:53.57\00:15:55.59 in fact if you do a seminar like this 00:15:55.60\00:15:58.25 speaking of the extravagant love 00:15:58.26\00:16:00.66 of God's love, you have people come to you 00:16:00.67\00:16:02.79 as they do to me all the time and say 00:16:02.80\00:16:04.45 ah that is such a insipid sentimental 00:16:04.46\00:16:07.48 weak subject, could you deal with something 00:16:07.49\00:16:09.53 powerful like the Three Angel messages? 00:16:09.54\00:16:12.23 And I say in my mind and sometimes 00:16:12.24\00:16:15.16 I loud to them, I say this idea 00:16:15.17\00:16:20.01 that there is something biblically 00:16:20.02\00:16:23.46 more powerful than God's love 00:16:23.47\00:16:26.10 is indicative that you don't understand 00:16:26.11\00:16:29.36 really what the Bible means when it uses 00:16:29.37\00:16:32.30 that word. Look at our popular culture 00:16:32.31\00:16:37.09 use of the word love, a popular music magazine 00:16:37.10\00:16:40.58 which I think I brought to your attention 00:16:40.59\00:16:42.73 on a former occasion but it fits nicely here. 00:16:42.74\00:16:45.01 A popular music magazine with a large data base 00:16:45.02\00:16:49.62 of song lyrics, popular song lyrics all the songs 00:16:49.63\00:16:53.90 that are being played on the radio, 00:16:53.91\00:16:55.67 and all the songs that young people 00:16:55.68\00:16:58.00 and older like are very familiar 00:16:58.01\00:17:00.18 with our popular culture, 00:17:00.19\00:17:01.48 they have all this lyrics in their massive lyrics 00:17:01.49\00:17:05.53 data base in their computer. 00:17:05.54\00:17:07.07 And they were curious this popular music 00:17:07.08\00:17:09.34 magazine to discover what words, 00:17:09.35\00:17:13.98 what ideas are the most commonly occurring words 00:17:13.99\00:17:19.59 and themes in popular music. 00:17:19.60\00:17:21.37 And so they began to do this data base search 00:17:21.38\00:17:24.44 on all the song lyrics, 00:17:24.45\00:17:25.79 going back to the Beatles and before. 00:17:25.80\00:17:27.50 And you know they discovered 00:17:27.51\00:17:29.42 that the most frequently used words 00:17:29.43\00:17:33.41 were without even a close second, 00:17:33.42\00:17:35.68 the most frequently used word in popular music 00:17:35.69\00:17:39.86 is the word love, that's right, 00:17:39.87\00:17:44.10 going all the way back to early 1960 00:17:44.11\00:17:47.53 she loves me yeah, yeah, yeah, 00:17:47.54\00:17:52.71 and then going all the way forward to our time 00:17:52.72\00:17:56.03 there's not a single word that occurs 00:17:56.04\00:17:57.86 more times than the word love 00:17:57.87\00:17:59.91 in popular music. But here's a thing 00:17:59.92\00:18:02.14 that is interesting, they discovered that 00:18:02.15\00:18:05.04 while love is the most frequently used 00:18:05.05\00:18:07.64 word in popular music, the second most 00:18:07.65\00:18:09.92 frequently used word in popular music is baby, 00:18:09.93\00:18:14.07 having nothing whatsoever to do with 00:18:14.08\00:18:17.72 infancy by the way. 00:18:17.73\00:18:18.94 But more in the context of 00:18:18.95\00:18:21.63 I love you baby because after all you are so 00:18:21.64\00:18:25.67 babe-able, you are so beautiful 00:18:25.68\00:18:28.09 and therefore I love you. 00:18:28.10\00:18:30.28 Do you know the third most frequently 00:18:30.29\00:18:32.36 used word in popular music? 00:18:32.37\00:18:33.81 I already said it, 00:18:33.82\00:18:34.99 yeah as in baby I love you, 00:18:35.00\00:18:37.60 oh yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, 00:18:37.61\00:18:40.62 lot say yeah, yeah, yeah, 00:18:40.63\00:18:41.86 in fact there is a popular music group 00:18:41.87\00:18:45.78 today, and you know what the name of 00:18:45.79\00:18:48.55 that group is? I mean, 00:18:48.56\00:18:50.05 I am familiar going way back; 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.08 I am familiar with Beatles 00:18:52.09\00:18:53.15 and the Rolling Stones 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.13 and Led Zeppelin but this band, 00:18:54.14\00:18:55.76 a popular band presently in our world 00:18:55.77\00:18:58.47 is called the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, 00:18:58.48\00:18:59.78 that's the name of the group. 00:18:59.79\00:19:02.54 So, so you are getting the feeling, 00:19:02.55\00:19:04.33 you are getting the picture, 00:19:04.34\00:19:05.31 here's the basic content of popular culture, 00:19:05.32\00:19:09.56 I love you baby, oh, yeah, yeah. 00:19:09.57\00:19:13.76 So if you take any given CD off the shelf, 00:19:13.77\00:19:17.01 or just go on iTunes and download whatever 00:19:17.02\00:19:20.05 songs are available in album form, 00:19:20.06\00:19:22.23 they are total album, 00:19:22.24\00:19:23.21 you'll discover a pattern 00:19:23.22\00:19:24.52 and the pattern goes something like this, 00:19:24.53\00:19:26.91 track one on the album, 00:19:26.92\00:19:28.24 baby I love you, oh yeah, 00:19:28.25\00:19:31.03 track two on the album, 00:19:31.04\00:19:33.32 baby I don't love you anymore 00:19:33.33\00:19:36.38 breaking up is hard to do because 00:19:36.39\00:19:39.28 after all I'm more babe-able babe 00:19:39.29\00:19:40.95 has just got my attention, 00:19:40.96\00:19:42.33 so I am going to move on 00:19:42.34\00:19:43.88 now but moving on is hard to do, 00:19:43.89\00:19:45.71 oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:19:45.72\00:19:48.05 Track three baby I love you again 00:19:48.06\00:19:51.81 but here's the thing it's not the same babe 00:19:51.82\00:19:54.38 or baby as track one, there's been a shifting 00:19:54.39\00:19:58.84 today that has taken a place 00:19:58.85\00:20:00.41 and this of course is reflected in the actual 00:20:00.42\00:20:03.53 romantic lifestyles of those 00:20:03.54\00:20:06.08 who sing these songs, if you haven't noticed. 00:20:06.09\00:20:10.03 Moving on from one babe to the next, 00:20:10.04\00:20:13.17 now here's the thing about this theme 00:20:13.18\00:20:16.53 in popular music when the singer says 00:20:16.54\00:20:19.81 baby I love you o yeah 00:20:19.82\00:20:21.73 but that love is not of sufficient constitution 00:20:21.74\00:20:26.82 to hold the individual in faithfulness. 00:20:26.83\00:20:32.06 It's not love at all because the fact is 00:20:32.07\00:20:37.51 when I love you baby because of what you do 00:20:37.52\00:20:41.04 for me actually who is that I love. 00:20:41.05\00:20:45.32 It's all about me; you're dispensable 00:20:45.33\00:20:50.30 to my needs being met. 00:20:50.31\00:20:56.14 Like the lady who said to me right 00:20:56.15\00:20:57.89 in front of her husband in a marriage 00:20:57.90\00:21:00.42 counseling session, I mean 00:21:00.43\00:21:01.67 this lady nailed it like nobody I've ever heard, 00:21:01.68\00:21:03.98 and I have done a lot of marriage counseling. 00:21:03.99\00:21:05.80 She said looking straight past him into my eyes, 00:21:05.81\00:21:10.41 my husband doesn't love me, 00:21:10.42\00:21:13.05 he uses me to love himself. 00:21:13.06\00:21:16.73 She got right to the heart of the matter. 00:21:16.74\00:21:22.73 Right to the heart not only a popular love 00:21:22.74\00:21:25.16 as it is conceived and portrayed 00:21:25.17\00:21:27.44 in popular media, but right to the heart 00:21:27.45\00:21:29.46 of really what it is, 00:21:29.47\00:21:31.71 it's going on in all of our hearts as 00:21:31.72\00:21:33.16 human beings in our following condition. 00:21:33.17\00:21:35.22 We can't look out there at that popular culture 00:21:35.23\00:21:38.40 and condemn it for this conception, 00:21:38.41\00:21:42.70 this love and self serving 00:21:42.71\00:21:44.88 and self centered conception of love. 00:21:44.89\00:21:46.57 It is simply the corporate expression 00:21:46.58\00:21:50.45 of what's going on in all of our fallen hearts 00:21:50.46\00:21:53.75 except for the converting grace of Christ 00:21:53.76\00:21:57.48 get hold of us, and teach us how to live 00:21:57.49\00:22:01.67 in a love that supersedes self interest. 00:22:01.68\00:22:07.94 Just a day or two ago a friend of mine 00:22:07.95\00:22:10.97 called my attention to a song that is one of 00:22:10.98\00:22:15.39 if not the mot popular song on the radio 00:22:15.40\00:22:17.12 right now in the United States of America, 00:22:17.13\00:22:18.89 and in this song the man is portrait as saying 00:22:18.90\00:22:23.13 and here is the part of the lyric 00:22:23.14\00:22:24.19 "I wouldn't be a real man if I could resist 00:22:24.20\00:22:29.57 a woman like you". Now at first listen that 00:22:29.58\00:22:36.79 feels flattering, doesn't it? I mean be honest, 00:22:36.80\00:22:39.61 doesn't it? Just, just and that's why 00:22:39.62\00:22:41.81 he is singing it. He is expecting her 00:22:41.82\00:22:43.93 to just really feel like she is something special 00:22:43.94\00:22:47.01 because after all, he is a real man 00:22:47.02\00:22:49.41 and a real man couldn't resist a woman like you. 00:22:49.42\00:22:52.14 But one that feels flattering right at first, 00:22:52.15\00:22:57.66 there is not a woman in the world 00:22:57.67\00:23:00.61 on second thought would wanna spend her life 00:23:00.62\00:23:02.80 committed to a man who can't resist loving 00:23:02.81\00:23:07.15 any woman that walks by that 00:23:07.16\00:23:09.34 he can't resist loving. 00:23:09.35\00:23:11.99 Are you getting what I am saying, 00:23:12.00\00:23:13.60 the fact is our popular culture has glamorized 00:23:13.61\00:23:19.86 and romanticized selfishness as love. 00:23:19.87\00:23:23.19 Our popular culture is basically said 00:23:23.20\00:23:26.63 I have no self control because after all 00:23:26.64\00:23:30.38 I am living entirely for myself, 00:23:30.39\00:23:34.58 and so the word love has been slaughtered 00:23:34.59\00:23:41.09 nearly beyond recognition 00:23:41.10\00:23:43.40 in our popular culture 00:23:43.41\00:23:46.63 but here's a thing. When the Bible employs 00:23:46.64\00:23:50.22 the word love as in God is love, 00:23:50.23\00:23:53.43 and God loves you. 00:23:53.44\00:23:54.64 It's not using the word in the same context 00:23:54.65\00:24:00.81 and with the same definition of the word 00:24:00.82\00:24:03.67 as it is commonly used in popular culture. 00:24:03.68\00:24:06.66 Let me just demonstrate for you, 00:24:06.67\00:24:08.78 how the word love is defined biblically, 00:24:08.79\00:24:13.81 so that we can wrap our minds around it, 00:24:13.82\00:24:15.82 and I want to do this by introducing 00:24:15.83\00:24:17.61 to you a new word. 00:24:17.62\00:24:19.49 How many of you like new words, 00:24:19.50\00:24:21.01 you like expanding your vocabulary; 00:24:21.02\00:24:22.37 you like new words or is it just to much of 00:24:22.38\00:24:24.89 a hassle. Your mercy oh Lord 00:28:33.86\00:28:35.99 is in the heavens by which is meant 00:28:36.00\00:28:39.86 your mercy is as high as 00:28:39.87\00:28:42.84 or higher than the heavens. 00:28:42.85\00:28:45.39 Notice this he says your faithfulness 00:28:45.40\00:28:49.75 reaches to the clouds. 00:28:49.76\00:28:53.12 Well the word mercy here is the word hesed; 00:28:53.13\00:28:57.06 sometimes the translators render 00:28:57.07\00:29:00.25 it as your unfeeling love. 00:29:00.26\00:29:04.80 Some of you are familiar with that translation 00:29:04.81\00:29:06.61 usually the new Americans standard 00:29:06.62\00:29:08.58 Bible uses or employs unfeeling love 00:29:08.59\00:29:11.99 to describe hesed. Sometimes it is defined 00:29:12.00\00:29:15.92 as unchanging love, what kind of love? 00:29:15.93\00:29:18.58 Unchanging, love that doesn't change 00:29:18.59\00:29:20.96 is unalterable. No external circumstances 00:29:20.97\00:29:24.92 can make it increase or decrease, 00:29:24.93\00:29:27.88 are you with me so far. 00:29:27.89\00:29:29.06 So notice what word is used 00:29:29.07\00:29:32.33 in association with hesed to define 00:29:32.34\00:29:35.42 its contents. Your mercy that is your hesed 00:29:35.43\00:29:39.61 oh Lord is in the heavens, 00:29:39.62\00:29:43.66 your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 00:29:43.67\00:29:50.01 This is a style of Hebrew writing 00:29:50.02\00:29:52.24 called a couplet, 00:29:52.25\00:29:53.60 it's a poetic style in which the 00:29:53.61\00:29:57.57 Prophet says something in one way 00:29:57.58\00:29:59.61 and then turns around and says precisely 00:29:59.62\00:30:01.25 the same thing but with a different word. 00:30:01.26\00:30:03.11 He is saying your hesed, 00:30:03.12\00:30:05.58 your mercy is as high as the heavens, 00:30:05.59\00:30:08.74 your what's the synonym for hesed here? 00:30:08.75\00:30:11.34 Your faithfulness Lord, 00:30:11.35\00:30:14.13 just reaches to the clouds. 00:30:14.14\00:30:16.22 And then verse 6, your righteousness 00:30:16.23\00:30:19.89 is like the great mountains, 00:30:19.90\00:30:23.19 and your judgments are as the great deep. 00:30:23.20\00:30:27.73 Oh Lord you preserve both man and beast. 00:30:27.74\00:30:31.25 Look at verse 7 now, 00:30:31.26\00:30:32.40 how precious that word precious means valuable, 00:30:32.41\00:30:38.30 that's what it means, 00:30:38.31\00:30:40.25 how precious is your loving kindness. 00:30:40.26\00:30:46.87 It's the same word that is translated in verse 5 00:30:46.88\00:30:50.64 as hesed. He translated as mercy, 00:30:50.65\00:30:53.95 now it's translated as what everybody? 00:30:53.96\00:30:55.87 Loving kindness, which is what? 00:30:55.88\00:30:58.90 It's a kind of love; 00:30:58.91\00:31:00.97 it's a quality of love that is kind, 00:31:00.98\00:31:04.40 it is condescending. It renders an undeserving 00:31:04.41\00:31:09.87 kind of attachment and focus, and devotion, 00:31:09.88\00:31:15.76 and then he says amazingly he says 00:31:15.77\00:31:18.92 therefore the children of men put their trust 00:31:18.93\00:31:23.92 under the shadow of your wings. 00:31:23.93\00:31:26.33 Please notice that in the understanding 00:31:26.34\00:31:28.86 of the Psalm is the hesed of God, 00:31:28.87\00:31:32.40 the unchanging, unalterable love of God, 00:31:32.41\00:31:37.35 he evokes trust. It calls forth from 00:31:37.36\00:31:42.77 the human experience, a reliance on the Lord 00:31:42.78\00:31:46.45 that expects him to be consistent 00:31:46.46\00:31:48.97 and unwavering in his deeds and his character. 00:31:48.98\00:31:54.20 Amazing, this is the Hebrew idea 00:31:54.21\00:31:58.07 of the love of God, is this is a lofty thing 00:31:58.08\00:32:00.82 or a low simplistic sentimentalism. 00:32:00.83\00:32:04.21 Is this a cotton candy sweet Hollywood kind of 00:32:04.22\00:32:07.83 I love you baby, is that what this is describing? 00:32:07.84\00:32:10.91 No, this is a strong powerful love 00:32:10.92\00:32:15.60 that is characterized by what everybody? 00:32:15.61\00:32:17.56 Faithfulness, and so probably the 00:32:17.57\00:32:22.94 best definition of the word hesed 00:32:22.95\00:32:27.00 and there are many, the best way to define 00:32:27.01\00:32:30.43 this word is with two words and that is 00:32:30.44\00:32:35.69 faithful love, or try this covenantal love: 00:32:35.70\00:32:40.59 Love that makes promises and follow 00:32:40.60\00:32:44.40 through to keep them at any cost to self. 00:32:44.41\00:32:50.00 You are not going to hear about that, 00:32:50.01\00:32:52.24 not generally in popular culture. 00:32:52.25\00:32:56.52 Love that follows through to love 00:32:56.53\00:32:59.23 the other above and before the self, 00:32:59.24\00:33:01.52 no matter what it cost myself. 00:33:01.53\00:33:05.39 Promise keeping love, that's the love of God. 00:33:05.40\00:33:11.88 One scholar told me, he said Ty this word hesed. 00:33:11.89\00:33:15.38 He said it is so rich and multifaceted. 00:33:15.39\00:33:19.00 The scholars have struggled to really wrap 00:33:19.01\00:33:23.00 their minds around the best way 00:33:23.01\00:33:24.86 in just a few words to describe 00:33:24.87\00:33:26.54 what it means because in Hebrew thinking 00:33:26.55\00:33:28.85 this word hesed really would require a 00:33:28.86\00:33:33.38 minimum of 26 English words to really capture 00:33:33.39\00:33:39.85 its essence. Now he didn't tell me 00:33:39.86\00:33:41.86 what 26 words he came up with but I searched 00:33:41.87\00:33:45.47 the scriptures and here is my 26. 00:33:45.48\00:33:47.76 The hesed of God, the love of God 00:33:47.77\00:33:51.96 that is described by the Old Testament 00:33:51.97\00:33:54.22 prophets my friends includes faithfulness, 00:33:54.23\00:33:58.51 and mercy, and compassion, 00:33:58.52\00:34:01.49 and changelessness, and determination, 00:34:01.50\00:34:05.50 and constancy, and reliability, 00:34:05.51\00:34:09.10 and commitment, and dependability, 00:34:09.11\00:34:11.67 and predictability, and trustworthiness, 00:34:11.68\00:34:16.46 and integrity, and patience 00:34:16.47\00:34:19.98 and hope and devotion, 00:34:19.99\00:34:22.40 passion and long suffering which is to 00:34:22.41\00:34:28.65 suffer long, and justice, 00:34:28.66\00:34:32.11 and truthfulness, and goodness, 00:34:32.12\00:34:34.91 and kindness, and grace, and loyalty, 00:34:34.92\00:34:40.80 and generosity, and faith, that's my 26, 00:34:40.81\00:34:46.37 it's all there. It is a kind of love 00:37:53.60\00:37:59.27 that promises and follows through, 00:37:59.28\00:38:03.37 it is a strong and powerful thing, 00:38:03.38\00:38:06.50 it's not a weak insipid sentimentalism; 00:38:06.51\00:38:10.49 it is Me, loving you above 00:38:10.50\00:38:15.82 and before myself. 00:38:15.83\00:38:17.84 It is Me loving you at any cost to myself. 00:38:17.85\00:38:23.17 That God says is how I love you. 00:38:23.18\00:38:26.49 The sure mercies of David, 00:38:26.50\00:38:30.49 the faithful love of God promised to David, 00:38:30.50\00:38:36.61 so okay come with me now to the definitive 00:38:36.62\00:38:41.34 Biblical statement. The Zenith, if you will, 00:38:41.35\00:38:46.89 the apex of divine self revelation, 00:38:46.90\00:38:49.67 this is God disclosing to you 00:38:49.68\00:38:52.41 and he peeling back the layers of his character, 00:38:52.42\00:38:56.16 and allowing us to have a vision and epiphany 00:38:56.17\00:39:00.20 if you will of the deep inner sanctum 00:39:00.21\00:39:04.52 of the divine character. 00:39:04.53\00:39:06.66 Do you wanna know what's going on in God's psyche, 00:39:06.67\00:39:09.44 you wanna know how God thinks, 00:39:09.45\00:39:12.20 how God feels. You wanna know 00:39:12.21\00:39:15.91 the quintessential truth about God. 00:39:15.92\00:39:19.68 It is brought to us by the Apostle John 00:39:19.69\00:39:22.28 and perhaps the simplest three words 00:39:22.29\00:39:25.86 you will find in scripture that 00:39:25.87\00:39:28.37 simultaneously double as the most profound 00:39:28.38\00:39:31.09 statement in scripture. 00:39:31.10\00:39:33.18 Paradoxically the simplest thing 00:39:33.19\00:39:35.68 you can ever comprehend 00:39:35.69\00:39:36.77 and the most profound thing 00:39:36.78\00:39:38.32 that you can ever comprehend. 00:39:38.33\00:39:39.49 First John chapter 4, tell me the verse. 00:39:39.50\00:39:42.12 Verse 8 repeated in verse 16, 00:39:42.13\00:39:46.51 what are the three words that I am talking about 00:39:46.52\00:39:48.36 the most powerful words that can be uttered 00:39:48.37\00:39:50.15 by human lips. God is love, my friends, 00:39:50.16\00:39:54.97 God is love, this statement now 00:39:54.98\00:39:59.29 just flush it out with me here, 00:39:59.30\00:40:01.17 this statement is without parallel 00:40:01.18\00:40:03.71 in scripture, and what I mean by that is this. 00:40:03.72\00:40:06.72 This is the only, listen carefully now, 00:40:06.73\00:40:10.47 this is the only total identity statement 00:40:10.48\00:40:14.63 made about God in scripture. 00:40:14.64\00:40:15.88 There is no other statement about God 00:40:15.89\00:40:19.54 in scripture that describes the totality 00:40:19.55\00:40:23.06 of God's character and identity. 00:40:23.07\00:40:24.84 There are verses that will tell you 00:40:24.85\00:40:26.90 for example that God is just, 00:40:26.91\00:40:29.50 but never that God is justice, the noun. 00:40:29.51\00:40:32.34 There are verses that will tell you 00:40:32.35\00:40:34.05 God is merciful but never that God is mercy. 00:40:34.06\00:40:37.01 That God is holy but never holiness; 00:40:37.02\00:40:40.99 this is the only noun that describes 00:40:41.00\00:40:45.78 the content of God's identity in scripture. 00:40:45.79\00:40:48.30 God is not loving, that's true too 00:40:48.31\00:40:53.25 but God is this is the only noun 00:40:53.26\00:40:57.13 in scripture to describe God's character, 00:40:57.14\00:40:59.98 God is love my friends. 00:40:59.99\00:41:03.29 You see well wait a minute, 00:41:03.30\00:41:04.27 God is other things too only a few misunderstand 00:41:04.28\00:41:07.10 the biblical word, only if you are locked 00:41:07.11\00:41:09.38 into our cultural popular concept of love. 00:41:09.39\00:41:13.99 But the word love biblically, 00:41:14.00\00:41:15.92 the word love is an umbrella 00:41:15.93\00:41:19.20 that takes in everything else 00:41:19.21\00:41:21.11 that is true of God. 00:41:21.12\00:41:22.26 In other words God is just because God is love, 00:41:22.27\00:41:27.03 in other words justice is a dimension of love 00:41:27.04\00:41:30.21 not contrary to it. Doing the right thing 00:41:30.22\00:41:35.53 is the loving thing to do; 00:41:35.54\00:41:37.70 God is merciful because God is love. 00:41:37.71\00:41:40.56 God is holy because God is love. 00:41:40.57\00:41:42.75 God is gentle because God is love. 00:41:42.76\00:41:44.61 God is patient because God is love. 00:41:44.62\00:41:46.41 There isn't a single word, 00:41:46.42\00:41:48.05 a single verb or adjective that you can 00:41:48.06\00:41:50.79 bring forth from scripture to describe 00:41:50.80\00:41:53.87 God that is not an extension of 00:41:53.88\00:41:57.68 and expression of enacting out of his love. 00:41:57.69\00:42:01.55 God is love and there we have before us 00:42:01.56\00:42:05.93 in total, the truth about God. 00:42:05.94\00:42:09.80 It is the one statement in scripture 00:42:09.81\00:42:11.92 that defines every biblical doctrine 00:42:11.93\00:42:13.86 that we believe by the way, 00:42:13.87\00:42:14.87 and I wish I had time to explain to you 00:42:14.88\00:42:16.72 what I mean by that. 00:42:16.73\00:42:17.70 But every biblical doctrine 00:42:17.71\00:42:19.72 that is truly true, that is a true biblical 00:42:19.73\00:42:21.88 doctrine is merely a explanation of, 00:42:21.89\00:42:25.12 an amplification of, an exposition of 00:42:25.13\00:42:27.78 the love of God in some dimension. 00:42:27.79\00:42:29.82 Every truth of scripture 00:42:29.83\00:42:32.03 is an extension of the love of God. 00:42:32.04\00:42:37.89 This statement God is love is without 00:42:37.90\00:42:41.98 any parallel in scripture, 00:42:41.99\00:42:44.47 but what does it mean again. 00:42:44.48\00:42:45.63 We've already seen what it means 00:42:45.64\00:42:47.00 in the Old Testament, 00:42:47.01\00:42:47.98 it means covenantal faithfulness, 00:42:47.99\00:42:50.04 it means unchanging love, 00:42:50.05\00:42:53.41 it means faithful follow through 00:42:53.42\00:42:56.37 if you will, that means making promises 00:42:56.38\00:42:59.15 and keeping them at any cost to oneself. 00:42:59.16\00:43:02.71 Now what does that mean in the 00:43:02.72\00:43:04.25 New Testament? I'll give you what I regard to be 00:43:04.26\00:43:07.66 the two most simple straight forward 00:43:07.67\00:43:10.24 definitions of Biblical love in the 00:43:10.25\00:43:12.82 New Testament. The first is in 00:43:12.83\00:43:14.44 1st Corinthians chapter 13, 00:43:14.45\00:43:16.85 we call that the what chapter? 00:43:16.86\00:43:18.31 The Love chapter, we put that on plats 00:43:18.32\00:43:21.16 and hang them in our houses 00:43:21.17\00:43:22.48 and is just so beautiful. 00:43:22.49\00:43:23.77 It's sometimes read at weddings, 00:43:23.78\00:43:26.30 love is patient, love is kind, etc, etc. 00:43:26.31\00:43:28.80 What a beautiful, actually it's a song 00:43:28.81\00:43:31.67 that Paul wrote, we think of Paul as 00:43:31.68\00:43:34.86 cerebral brainiac, but he was also emotionally 00:43:34.87\00:43:39.23 in touch with the love of God. 00:43:39.24\00:43:40.68 Now check this out Paul comes to the real points 00:43:40.69\00:43:45.51 of what he is talking about here, 00:43:45.52\00:43:47.52 and he says love is not in verse 5 self seeking. 00:43:47.53\00:43:52.32 That's New International version, 00:43:52.33\00:43:53.86 King James version says love is not 00:43:53.87\00:43:55.95 or seek if not it's own, 00:43:55.96\00:44:00.03 King James version. 00:44:00.04\00:44:01.46 In other words love is not self seeking 00:44:01.47\00:44:05.05 that's a negative grammatical formulation. 00:44:05.06\00:44:07.36 What if you would've turn that 00:44:07.37\00:44:08.34 around and make an equally true statement, 00:44:08.35\00:44:10.11 but render it as a positive 00:44:10.12\00:44:11.95 grammatical declaration. 00:44:11.96\00:44:13.30 If love is not self seeking, what is love? 00:44:13.31\00:44:17.52 If love is not self seeking 00:44:17.53\00:44:19.45 we might say love is other centered, 00:44:19.46\00:44:23.04 if it's not self centered what is it? 00:44:23.05\00:44:24.88 It's other centered. It's not selfish, 00:44:24.89\00:44:28.80 it's not centered on self, 00:44:28.81\00:44:30.90 if we can even imagine what this means. 00:44:30.91\00:44:33.70 The God of the universe who occupies 00:44:33.71\00:44:35.91 the throne of the universe is a God 00:44:35.92\00:44:38.15 who literally in every single thought 00:44:38.16\00:44:40.74 and feeling and action. 00:44:40.75\00:44:42.74 Literally is completely other centered 00:44:42.75\00:44:49.12 and self giving. He never thinks a thought 00:44:49.13\00:44:53.22 or feels an emotion that is not other centered. 00:44:53.23\00:44:59.02 Literally when push comes to shove God 00:44:59.03\00:45:01.73 would rather die forever than to live 00:45:01.74\00:45:05.43 without you. Personally 00:45:05.44\00:45:07.54 and you can just put your name there. 00:45:07.55\00:45:08.97 God would rather cease to exist 00:45:08.98\00:45:12.28 then for you to be banished and alienated 00:45:12.29\00:45:20.08 into an eternity without life 00:45:20.09\00:45:22.51 and without his love. 00:45:22.52\00:45:23.90 God literally loves you more than his own life, 00:45:23.91\00:45:27.48 His love is not self seeking. 00:45:27.49\00:45:29.80 And here's another one 1st John 3:16. 00:45:29.81\00:45:32.08 We know John 3:16, 00:45:32.09\00:45:33.57 what about 1st John 3:16? 00:45:33.58\00:45:35.20 Here's a biblical definition 00:45:35.21\00:45:36.27 of what love is. So now let's shift gears 00:48:31.78\00:48:35.71 in the moments that remain, 00:48:35.72\00:48:36.75 and I want to take you, 00:48:36.76\00:48:39.48 I want to portray for you in this first time 00:48:39.49\00:48:42.51 together. I want to share with you 00:48:42.52\00:48:44.72 the extravagant love of God as he had 00:48:44.73\00:48:49.56 existed in eternity past before creation. 00:48:49.57\00:48:55.13 In the Bible according to Psalm chapter 19 00:48:55.14\00:48:58.24 verse 2, all of reality may be comprehended 00:48:58.25\00:49:02.27 as being composed of two basic parts, 00:49:02.28\00:49:04.83 eternity past and eternity future. 00:49:04.84\00:49:09.04 If I had a board I would draw a gently 00:49:09.05\00:49:11.52 arching line and there I would have write 00:49:11.53\00:49:14.66 in the middle another line crossing it, 00:49:14.67\00:49:16.75 and I would say eternity past, 00:49:16.76\00:49:19.35 eternity future from everlasting 00:49:19.36\00:49:24.93 to everlasting. David says you are God. 00:49:25.23\00:49:28.96 What is this everlasting to everlasting, 00:49:28.97\00:49:31.96 eternity past, eternity future? 00:49:31.97\00:49:36.00 God has existed forever. 00:49:36.01\00:49:39.16 The Bible says that God existed in this 00:49:39.17\00:49:43.81 remote region of reality called eternity past, 00:49:43.82\00:49:48.00 and Paul says in Titus chapter 1 00:49:48.01\00:49:50.38 and verse 2 that this remote region 00:49:50.39\00:49:53.70 that we can scarcely comprehend. 00:49:53.71\00:49:54.92 He says it was before there was time, 00:49:54.93\00:49:58.42 can you imagine a time before 00:49:58.43\00:50:00.03 there was time. 00:50:00.04\00:50:01.49 No we are time bound creatures. 00:50:01.50\00:50:04.31 We can't comprehend a time without time, 00:50:04.32\00:50:07.13 we're linear, we're creatures 00:50:07.14\00:50:09.20 that understand the succession of events 00:50:09.21\00:50:12.33 one upon another. All we know is time, 00:50:12.34\00:50:15.16 but there was a time according to Paul, 00:50:15.17\00:50:16.79 when there was no time. 00:50:16.80\00:50:18.98 There was just this absolute being 00:50:18.99\00:50:22.62 and that absolute being that never had 00:50:22.63\00:50:26.02 a beginning, and will never have and end 00:50:26.03\00:50:28.76 is none other than God. In Galatians chapter 1, 00:50:28.77\00:50:33.51 the Apostle Paul says that He that is 00:50:33.52\00:50:36.99 Christ is before all things, 00:50:37.00\00:50:41.73 and in Him all things consist or cohere 00:50:41.74\00:50:46.14 or hold together. Are you with me so far? 00:50:46.15\00:50:48.73 There is this eternity past. 00:50:48.74\00:50:52.21 In chapter 7 of Daniel, 00:50:52.22\00:50:54.50 amazingly we're told that God 00:50:54.51\00:50:57.50 one of his names, God is called the 00:50:57.51\00:50:59.22 ancient of days, the what of days? 00:50:59.23\00:51:02.22 Ancient of days, what's a synonym for that, 00:51:02.23\00:51:04.41 is God old? What do you think? 00:51:04.42\00:51:06.61 Is he elderly? Allow the word, 00:51:06.62\00:51:13.05 He is ancient, but He is not old, 00:51:13.06\00:51:15.12 He is not, he may be old that's understatement, 00:51:15.13\00:51:17.84 but He is also very young. 00:51:17.85\00:51:21.36 In fact if God appeared to us and said hey, 00:51:21.37\00:51:23.25 hey guess my age, just by the appearance, 00:51:23.26\00:51:26.69 we say I don't know 26. 00:51:26.70\00:51:28.18 No God's teeth are not in a jar 00:51:28.19\00:51:31.72 by the bed, God is eternally young, 00:51:31.73\00:51:38.33 the law of entropy has no power over Him. 00:51:38.34\00:51:41.94 Nothing is falling apart, nothing is bulging out, 00:51:41.95\00:51:45.33 God is eternally young, 00:51:45.34\00:51:49.86 He is the ancient of days, 00:51:49.87\00:51:51.35 He has always existed in eternal youth, 00:51:51.36\00:51:53.83 but what was God doing for all the eternity 00:51:53.84\00:51:56.84 before creation my friends. 00:51:56.85\00:51:58.39 The Bible tells us we don't need to guess, 00:51:58.40\00:52:00.49 this God who always existed 00:52:00.50\00:52:02.98 in all eternity past, 00:52:02.99\00:52:04.35 the Bible says of this God 00:52:04.36\00:52:05.87 that he was engaged in an other centered 00:52:05.88\00:52:11.28 self giving love that never had a beginning, 00:52:11.29\00:52:16.40 and it always existed Father, 00:52:16.41\00:52:19.26 Son and Holy Spirit, each one living 00:52:19.27\00:52:24.26 for the others with no self consciousness, 00:52:24.27\00:52:28.83 with no desire to get, 00:52:28.84\00:52:30.91 with no demands, with no manipulation, 00:52:30.92\00:52:34.56 with no coercion, no force, just, 00:52:34.57\00:52:39.07 just absolute other centeredness 00:52:39.08\00:52:43.32 for all the eternity past. 00:52:43.33\00:52:45.53 This is what Jesus told us 00:52:45.54\00:52:48.18 when in His prayer we over heard Him 00:52:48.19\00:52:51.16 speaking to the Father. 00:52:51.17\00:52:52.35 In John chapter 17 and verse 24, 00:52:52.36\00:52:56.13 one of my favorite this is like one of the 00:52:56.14\00:52:57.61 mountain top scripture for me 00:52:57.62\00:52:59.13 where we're hearing Jesus in this intimate 00:52:59.14\00:53:01.69 conversation with the Father, 00:53:01.70\00:53:02.95 and he says Father I want them 00:53:02.96\00:53:07.74 to behold the glory that I had with you 00:53:07.75\00:53:12.50 before the world was, I want them to tap into, 00:53:12.51\00:53:14.98 I want them to comprehend it Father. 00:53:14.99\00:53:16.41 And then he defines what it is, this glory, 00:53:16.42\00:53:18.35 this radiance, this beauty, this out going 00:53:18.36\00:53:23.40 beautiful radiant thing whatever it is, 00:53:23.41\00:53:27.58 He defines it for us. He says Father 00:53:27.59\00:53:30.81 I want them to access this because 00:53:30.82\00:53:34.24 Father you loved me before the foundation 00:53:34.25\00:53:39.20 of the world. There my friends 00:53:39.21\00:53:41.40 is the infinite before, that's eternity past. 00:53:41.41\00:53:45.78 If you reach back as far as the human mind 00:53:45.79\00:53:49.14 can imagine or reach back you discover 00:53:49.15\00:53:51.98 that God not only is love, 00:53:51.99\00:53:55.68 but always has been love. 00:53:55.69\00:53:58.00 God has always existed in this beautiful 00:53:58.01\00:54:01.55 ebb and flow of social self-givingness 00:54:01.56\00:54:07.90 if you will. God is a unit, 00:54:07.91\00:54:10.92 God is a communitarian being, 00:54:10.93\00:54:14.20 God is literally a neighborhood if you will, 00:54:14.21\00:54:17.07 God is a social unit, God is a friendship, 00:54:17.08\00:54:20.98 and reality at its foundation, 00:54:20.99\00:54:24.13 at its core where we come from, 00:54:24.14\00:54:28.30 what Isaiah calls them matrix of reality, 00:54:28.31\00:54:31.26 the womb of reality, 00:54:31.27\00:54:33.11 the point from where every thing came? 00:54:33.12\00:54:35.71 Do you know what it is? 00:54:35.72\00:54:36.83 It is a perfectly self giving love, 00:54:36.84\00:54:42.26 the Father living for the son 00:54:42.27\00:54:45.50 and the Holy Spirit in total delight 00:54:45.51\00:54:47.84 and pleasure that we can scarcely even imagine. 00:54:47.85\00:54:51.21 We get little glimpses of it 00:54:51.22\00:54:52.99 and the Son living for the Spirit 00:54:53.00\00:54:55.33 and the Father, and the Holy Spirit 00:54:55.34\00:54:57.90 living for the Father and the Son. 00:54:57.91\00:55:00.43 We taste it occasionally, 00:55:00.44\00:55:02.50 don't we? In little moments in our 00:55:02.51\00:55:04.82 matrimonial bless.
