But it had yet to spread into the inner 00:05:59.09\00:06:03.02 continent. 00:06:03.02\00:06:04.93 One church member there, Peter Wessels 00:06:04.93\00:06:08.00 donated $15,000 to start a mission in Rhodesia. 00:06:08.00\00:06:13.97 That's about $600,000. In today's money 00:06:13.97\00:06:19.04 in the conference, President Elder Robinson 00:06:19.04\00:06:21.78 went to see so roads, the namesake of Rhodesia and the 00:06:21.78\00:06:25.48 head of the British South Africa company 00:06:25.48\00:06:28.42 to lay before him their plans. 00:06:28.42\00:06:32.42 He wasn't very friendly. He had a bias against 00:06:32.42\00:06:34.89 missionaries. 00:06:34.89\00:06:37.69 He was riding on some papers is the day gave him their 00:06:37.69\00:06:41.76 proposal. 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.10 And when they finished, he didn't look up. 00:06:43.10\00:06:45.47 They just finished writing on his paper, 00:06:45.47\00:06:48.44 sealed in an envelope and gave it to the gentleman and told 00:06:48.44\00:06:52.17 them to deliver it to his liaison. Doctor, Jamison in 00:06:52.17\00:06:55.54 blue whale, 00:06:55.54\00:06:58.98 they were able to set out hastily on this trip. They were 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.68 so curious to see what was inside that envelope. 00:07:01.68\00:07:06.02 They took it on the train ride and then 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.69 600 miles more 00:07:08.69\00:07:11.19 that they had to walk over a period of 2 months 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.46 in order to get double the whale 00:07:14.46\00:07:17.43 immediately. When they got there, they delivered a letter 00:07:17.43\00:07:20.90 to Doctor Jamison. 00:07:20.90\00:07:24.67 After reading Mister Rhodes Letter, Doctor Jamison said, 00:07:24.67\00:07:28.01 gentlemen, how much land do you want, 00:07:28.01\00:07:33.68 Peter Standard for a minute or 2? 00:07:33.68\00:07:37.09 Not quite knowing how to answer that question. 00:07:37.09\00:07:40.59 He said, well, doctor, 00:07:40.59\00:07:43.32 the facts are we ought to have 12,000 acres, 00:07:43.32\00:07:48.83 but that depends upon the terms that we will get it. 00:07:48.83\00:07:54.07 Rhodes commands me to give you all the land that you can make. 00:07:54.07\00:07:57.64 You saw said, Doctor Jamison, 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.84 you can stake out any unclaimed territory to the East West, 00:08:00.84\00:08:04.25 North or south of the whale and he gave them a guide and they 00:08:04.25\00:08:08.52 went out 00:08:08.52\00:08:09.88 and laid out 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.39 the area, which is nearly 20 square miles that would become 00:08:11.39\00:08:14.76 the Sulu Sea had been this mission 00:08:14.76\00:08:20.30 the following year. The first missionaries came 00:08:20.30\00:08:24.27 and this book 00:08:31.74\00:08:32.87 on the Trail of Livingston written by Harry Anderson, 00:08:32.87\00:08:36.21 who is one of those first missionaries. He's full of 00:08:36.21\00:08:39.08 amazing and miraculous stories of this journey. 00:08:39.08\00:08:43.28 He and his wife 00:08:43.28\00:08:44.75 move there from Indiana, 00:08:44.75\00:08:47.39 along with the elder George trip, their young son, George 00:08:47.39\00:08:50.26 Junior and his wife Mary 00:08:50.26\00:08:52.83 and a doctor Doctor Carmichael who sold his practice in 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.77 California to move there. 00:08:56.77\00:09:00.54 These people are just like us have met a couple people here 00:09:00.54\00:09:03.07 already from Indiana. And I'm sure there's a few doctors from 00:09:03.07\00:09:06.04 California. 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.94 And I don't think it was 00:09:07.94\00:09:09.81 any easier back then than it is now. 00:09:09.81\00:09:14.98 As soon as they arrived, 00:09:14.98\00:09:16.69 they set out 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.52 building might houses with sticks. They dug a well. 00:09:18.52\00:09:21.32 They planted a garden 00:09:21.32\00:09:23.76 and then a family and set in. 00:09:23.76\00:09:26.70 They were there to help as many people as they could all around 00:09:26.70\00:09:29.60 them. 00:09:29.60\00:09:30.67 But these were difficult times 00:09:30.67\00:09:34.17 just after that rebellion broke out and they had to flee the 00:09:34.17\00:09:36.81 mission station. They buried a few of the belongings that they 00:09:36.81\00:09:39.41 could left the other things behind and went to pull away 00:09:39.41\00:09:43.14 where they slept under a wagon in the rain coats at night, 00:09:43.14\00:09:45.91 trying to keep dry for several months. 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.28 When they returned, 00:09:49.28\00:09:51.05 they found that there are things were taken and put in a 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.56 cave by a local chief who had a fondness for them and gave them 00:09:54.56\00:09:58.39 back and they were able to restart that work. 00:09:58.39\00:10:02.53 But these challenges 00:10:02.53\00:10:04.90 were nothing compared to what lay ahead 00:10:04.90\00:10:09.04 2 and a half years after they arrive, 00:10:09.04\00:10:11.51 Doctor Carmichael 00:10:11.51\00:10:13.91 was taken 00:10:13.91\00:10:15.61 by malaria. 00:10:15.61\00:10:19.55 It was not known at that time that the mosquito is the 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.55 carrier of this disease. And many feared 00:10:22.55\00:10:25.12 the quinine was dangerous. 00:10:25.12\00:10:27.39 One week later, another trip died 00:10:27.39\00:10:31.36 and then 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.53 their son George 5 weeks after that 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.16 died, also the same dreaded disease leaving that poor 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.80 mother. 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.67 Those who look at this situation, 00:10:44.34\00:10:47.48 I thought this endeavor was a complete failure 00:10:47.48\00:10:52.15 and it was even several more years after that until they 00:10:52.15\00:10:54.75 would have their first baptism. 00:10:54.75\00:10:58.45 And as the pastor is going to do the baptism him are saying 00:10:58.45\00:11:04.96 a person who has given his life to Christ, the 6 people that 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.83 had lined up behind him, fled into the jungle because they 00:11:07.83\00:11:11.00 thought he was being drowned. 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.94 But then the next day they came back. 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.77 It saw him alive and well. They, too, are baptized 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.08 and many, many more since that time. I've been baptized in the 00:11:20.08\00:11:23.31 country. That is now Zimbabwe, 00:11:23.31\00:11:25.78 a country where there are now approximately 1 million 00:11:25.78\00:11:30.02 avenues. 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.85 You will show me the path of life in your presence is the 00:11:35.72\00:11:40.76 fullness of joy. 00:11:40.76\00:11:42.80 You're right. Hander pleasures forevermore 00:11:42.80\00:11:47.30 when we pursue happiness. We we oftentimes look for in 00:11:47.30\00:11:50.61 the wrong places. 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.51 These missionaries rather than just pursue happiness, 00:11:53.51\00:11:58.48 surrendered to the lords guidance. 00:11:58.48\00:12:04.65 And we have to remember that the fullness of joy 00:12:04.65\00:12:08.39 and pleasures are not synonymous with come for an 00:12:08.39\00:12:11.63 easy life. 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.70 Theirs was anything but an easy life. But I'm quite certain 00:12:13.70\00:12:18.20 that they experienced the fullness of joy 00:12:18.20\00:12:22.77 in spite of the hardships. 00:12:22.77\00:12:27.44 What we've come here 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.81 asking ourselves 00:12:29.81\00:12:31.88 is how do we navigate into his presence 00:12:31.88\00:12:37.35 and the ministry of healing? 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.42 It says we shall find his footprints beside the sick bed 00:12:39.42\00:12:44.26 in the Hubble's of poverty, in the crowded alleys of the great 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.03 cities and in every place where there are human heart in need 00:12:47.03\00:12:51.00 of consolation. 00:12:51.00\00:12:54.00 Another quote by Archbishop Oscar Romero found in this book 00:12:54.00\00:12:58.04 says All those who worry about the hungry, the naked, the 00:12:58.04\00:13:01.21 poor, they disappeared, 00:13:01.21\00:13:03.48 the tortured, imprisoned about any suffering. Human being are 00:13:03.48\00:13:07.12 close to God. 00:13:07.12\00:13:10.42 This book is a dialogue between Paul Farmer celebrated 00:13:10.42\00:13:15.16 Harvard professor infectious disease specialist that started 00:13:15.16\00:13:18.09 the largest charity hospital in Haiti 00:13:18.09\00:13:20.63 and worked extensively in the developing world. 00:13:20.63\00:13:24.87 And he dialogue with Gustavo Gutierrez at Peruvian Catholic 00:13:24.87\00:13:29.04 Priest, who's the father of liberation theology, 00:13:29.04\00:13:33.17 the movement to liberate the oppressed people 00:13:33.17\00:13:36.58 and combining religious faith with aid for the poor. 00:13:36.58\00:13:42.35 This concept is sometimes called the UN Divided Gospel. 00:13:42.35\00:13:48.02 The title, my talk this morning is in the presence of the poor. 00:13:48.02\00:13:52.89 It relate some of the concepts in this book 00:13:52.89\00:13:55.80 to the theme of our conference. 00:13:55.80\00:13:59.83 These concepts are not new. They come straight from the 00:13:59.83\00:14:02.27 Bible. They repeated in the Ministry of Healing. 00:14:02.27\00:14:05.84 And I realize that being in the presence of the poor, 00:14:05.84\00:14:09.61 he's not the only way to be and to guys in God's presence. 00:14:09.61\00:14:13.92 But it's one of the ways that I personally have felt 00:14:13.92\00:14:17.62 most closely in his presence 00:14:17.62\00:14:22.02 where we live in Haiti. 00:14:22.02\00:14:24.09 Evil surrounds us. 00:14:24.09\00:14:28.66 But we delight in the presence of God, 00:14:28.66\00:14:31.90 which is even stronger. It is palpable in our hospital 00:14:31.90\00:14:36.67 in the people that work in our hospital 00:14:36.67\00:14:39.44 and in the patients who come to us seeking help 00:14:39.44\00:14:43.58 a few years back, I had been invited by a professor to give 00:14:47.58\00:14:50.65 some talks in Israel. 00:14:50.65\00:14:52.79 We landed in Tel Aviv on a Friday afternoon and went to 00:14:52.79\00:14:56.76 Jerusalem on that Friday 00:14:56.76\00:15:00.43 thinking back about 00:15:00.43\00:15:02.46 being in the presence and Jesus as we walked those streets of 00:15:02.46\00:15:06.43 Jerusalem, 00:15:06.43\00:15:09.67 the professor 00:15:09.67\00:15:11.57 who had invited us 00:15:11.57\00:15:14.04 was an atheist who had escaped and impressive part of Eastern 00:15:14.04\00:15:18.01 Europe and come to Israel for a better life. 00:15:18.01\00:15:22.05 And he was asking me 00:15:22.05\00:15:24.12 about why we would move our family from a country of 00:15:24.12\00:15:27.62 resources and opportunities to a place of relative challenging 00:15:27.62\00:15:30.83 hardship. 00:15:30.83\00:15:33.73 How is trying to tell him in a meaningful way 00:15:33.73\00:15:38.47 why we made make a choice like this when he suddenly stopped 00:15:38.47\00:15:41.84 us right there in the middle of the street and there was a long 00:15:41.84\00:15:44.27 pause. 00:15:44.27\00:15:46.11 He said you are lucky. 00:15:48.81\00:15:51.15 You are lucky because you believe in God, 00:15:51.15\00:15:54.88 I could never do that. 00:15:54.88\00:15:59.92 And it left me wondering 00:15:59.92\00:16:02.32 why 00:16:02.32\00:16:03.59 is he saying that? I'm lucky because God's love is there for 00:16:03.59\00:16:07.76 everyone. 00:16:07.76\00:16:08.86 All we have to do 00:16:08.86\00:16:10.77 his allow it to come into our lives. 00:16:10.77\00:16:15.10 But I've reflected more on that. I realized that he was 00:16:15.10\00:16:17.97 right. 00:16:17.97\00:16:19.61 He was right because people don't know that. 00:16:19.61\00:16:24.21 And that is why 00:16:24.21\00:16:25.98 we are all here today. 00:16:25.98\00:16:28.18 Most if not all of us 00:16:28.18\00:16:31.85 knowing that. 00:16:31.85\00:16:33.72 I think most people here live in North America. 00:16:36.66\00:16:39.83 This is a place that 00:16:39.83\00:16:41.90 he's often called the first world 00:16:41.90\00:16:45.90 and the country where I live in Haiti. 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.50 He's often called the 3rd world. 00:16:48.50\00:16:52.34 But I would like to propose to you 00:16:52.34\00:16:54.84 that there is really just one world. 00:16:54.84\00:16:59.31 I think that's what Jesus meant 00:16:59.31\00:17:02.22 when he told us in Mark 12. Love the Lord, your God, 00:17:02.22\00:17:05.15 with all your heart, so mind and strength and love your 00:17:05.15\00:17:08.69 neighbor as yourself. 00:17:08.69\00:17:10.99 He didn't 00:17:10.99\00:17:12.16 consider our neighborhood to be divided up 00:17:12.16\00:17:15.46 by the 3rd world for the first world 00:17:15.46\00:17:19.27 because in essence, 00:17:19.27\00:17:21.50 we all live in one big village. 00:17:21.50\00:17:25.07 It is a plenary session. It's important. 00:17:29.34\00:17:32.35 This talk is relevant for everyone 00:17:32.35\00:17:35.65 discussing the problem of poverty is a little bit like 00:17:35.65\00:17:38.12 talking about climate change. 00:17:38.12\00:17:42.66 The ozone layer over the North Pole might not be right in 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.76 front of our eyes every day. 00:17:45.76\00:17:50.63 Just like poverty may not come in front of every one of us 00:17:50.63\00:17:53.57 here every day. 00:17:53.57\00:17:55.90 Poverty is not an accident of nature. 00:17:55.90\00:17:59.67 It is a man made problem and we're all partially to blame 00:17:59.67\00:18:03.58 for it. 00:18:03.58\00:18:06.48 But as Christians, Adventists 00:18:06.48\00:18:09.02 medical evangelists, 00:18:09.02\00:18:11.59 understanding poverty is relevant to all of us. 00:18:11.59\00:18:15.99 It's relevant to how we ethically live our lives. 00:18:15.99\00:18:18.66 It's relevant to where we could send our kids to school. 00:18:18.66\00:18:22.40 It's relevant to what organizations we support. 00:18:22.40\00:18:26.70 It's relevant to ultimately how we free ourselves from the 00:18:30.91\00:18:35.04 distractions of life in order to call in order to follow 00:18:35.04\00:18:39.45 God's plan for us. 00:18:39.45\00:18:43.65 We should not just be thankful 00:18:43.65\00:18:47.36 that we don't have to go to bed hungry 00:18:47.36\00:18:50.29 our live with a treatable disability, 00:18:50.29\00:18:53.63 that we should be thankful that we are blessed 00:18:53.63\00:18:57.27 to be able to do something about it. 00:18:57.27\00:19:00.54 My own story starts with a visit to my grandparents 00:19:08.48\00:19:12.25 at the age of 8 years old. 00:19:12.25\00:19:15.12 This wasn't a typical visit to grandpa and grandma's house. 00:19:15.12\00:19:18.25 My grandparents lived in a remote and wild part of the 00:19:18.25\00:19:21.79 Belgian Congo. 00:19:21.79\00:19:24.09 When my grandfather spent over 20 years of his career as a 00:19:24.09\00:19:26.80 surgeon, 00:19:26.80\00:19:28.46 it was on that trip that I got to see my first operation. 00:19:28.46\00:19:31.70 This experience planted some of the seeds for decisions I would 00:19:31.70\00:19:35.67 make later in life. 00:19:35.67\00:19:38.97 My grandparents 00:19:38.97\00:19:40.91 mode here 00:19:40.91\00:19:42.38 moved there in 1936, my grandfather graduated from the 00:19:42.38\00:19:46.08 College of Medical Evangelists in 1934. 00:19:46.08\00:19:49.55 he did a fellowship and tropical medicine. And he and 00:19:49.55\00:19:51.92 my grandmother 00:19:51.92\00:19:53.82 boarded a passenger ship in Southampton, England sale for 3 00:19:53.82\00:19:57.66 weeks with their infant son 00:19:57.66\00:20:00.26 before taking a train through Angola and then walking for 00:20:00.26\00:20:04.37 several more days to the song to Mission Hospital in the 00:20:04.37\00:20:08.17 Belgian Congo. 00:20:08.17\00:20:11.97 My grandfather, 00:20:11.97\00:20:13.41 I grew up in Finland. He eventually spoke 8 languages 00:20:13.41\00:20:17.05 in his book. 00:20:17.05\00:20:18.35 You can read stories about casting out demons. 00:20:18.35\00:20:22.12 He was an ordained minister who baptized hundreds of people 00:20:22.12\00:20:26.29 and he laid his hands on the sick. 00:20:26.29\00:20:30.06 He truly 00:20:30.06\00:20:31.99 represented these words of Jesus. 00:20:31.99\00:20:37.13 This is the song that ambulance in 19 in the late 1930's, 00:20:37.13\00:20:43.61 all missionary doctors. He wore many hats 00:20:43.61\00:20:47.48 and one of those ways construction projects he 00:20:47.48\00:20:51.01 built this church. They fired their own bricks. The fires had 00:20:51.01\00:20:55.08 to stay hot for 3 weeks, saw it and he had to go down 2 in the 00:20:55.08\00:20:59.02 morning to Wake up the Watchman and make sure that the fires 00:20:59.02\00:21:02.29 didn't cool down in the BRICS. Crack, 00:21:02.29\00:21:06.39 the dedication, my grandparents, parents 00:21:06.39\00:21:09.83 and the early advantage pioneers 00:21:09.83\00:21:13.10 was no doubt impossible without their dependence on God. 00:21:13.10\00:21:18.34 They left their countries. They left their friends. 00:21:18.34\00:21:21.41 Families gave up their comforts. 00:21:21.41\00:21:26.18 They committed to the Lord 00:21:26.18\00:21:28.58 and he helped establish their plant. 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.52 My story is a bit less dramatic. 00:21:34.36\00:21:37.66 I held that dream 00:21:37.66\00:21:39.83 doing mission service 00:21:39.83\00:21:41.73 from a young age held on to a through medical school 00:21:41.73\00:21:45.53 through residency at Loma Linda, 00:21:45.53\00:21:47.64 through pediatric fellow orthopedic Fellowship in San 00:21:47.64\00:21:50.31 Diego. 00:21:50.31\00:21:51.61 And then a couple years of practice at Riverside County 00:21:51.61\00:21:54.51 Hospital. 00:21:54.51\00:21:56.98 People told us not to do it. 00:21:56.98\00:22:00.55 We could be missionaries right here 00:22:00.55\00:22:04.05 and that is important. 00:22:04.05\00:22:08.49 People tried to talk us out of it more and more as time wore 00:22:08.49\00:22:11.16 on good people, advantage relatives, mentors, financial 00:22:11.16\00:22:15.20 counsellors. They all had their reasons. 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.60 But fortunately, 00:22:18.60\00:22:20.20 we didn't take them too seriously. 00:22:20.20\00:22:24.94 As soon as I finish my aura boards which we do 2 years 00:22:24.94\00:22:28.04 after being in practice, 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.41 we put our house up for sale. We didn't even wait for the 00:22:30.41\00:22:33.01 results. 00:22:33.01\00:22:34.58 We packed my things in an ocean container 00:22:34.58\00:22:37.45 and note 00:22:37.45\00:22:38.65 to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. 00:22:38.65\00:22:43.29 A New Year's Eve 2004, we said goodbye to family and friends. 00:22:43.29\00:22:49.86 Maybe not quite as dramatic as the goodbyes that have been 00:22:49.86\00:22:53.17 said in the past where missionaries 00:22:53.17\00:22:57.07 sometimes never saw their family and friends again. 00:22:57.07\00:23:03.01 But nonetheless, 00:23:03.01\00:23:04.65 significant for us. 00:23:04.65\00:23:07.75 This was actually 00:23:07.75\00:23:10.25 one of the first 2 of the moves that we've made so far to the 00:23:10.25\00:23:14.49 island of Hispaniola, 00:23:14.49\00:23:16.49 which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. 00:23:16.49\00:23:21.13 We have visited there a few times on short-term mission 00:23:21.13\00:23:23.53 trips. But going there with a long-term commitment is like 00:23:23.53\00:23:27.57 comparing a first date to marriage. 00:23:27.57\00:23:31.17 We had to learn a new language, read to learn a new culture and 00:23:31.17\00:23:34.88 suddenly the sayings became reality without an end point 00:23:34.88\00:23:40.88 that likewise, 00:23:40.88\00:23:43.28 that commitment 00:23:43.28\00:23:44.69 brought us joy 00:23:44.69\00:23:47.16 and blessings 00:23:47.16\00:23:49.86 that last year things could not. 00:23:49.86\00:23:52.73 Our boys are and what it was like to be a minority. 00:23:52.73\00:23:56.03 We learned what it was like we learned about enjoying the 00:23:56.03\00:24:00.84 beautiful parts of the Dominican culture and even 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.17 appreciating the best part of our own culture 00:24:03.17\00:24:06.64 and blending those into the recipe of life. 00:24:06.64\00:24:11.15 We made great friends there and we have fun memories. 00:24:11.15\00:24:16.82 But this type of experience doesn't come 00:24:16.82\00:24:19.49 without a dependence on God. 00:24:19.49\00:24:22.86 And we learned more than anything how to depend on got. 00:24:22.86\00:24:26.70 And it also doesn't come without a dependence on your 00:24:26.70\00:24:31.07 wife. 00:24:31.07\00:24:32.27 And I wouldn't be 00:24:32.27\00:24:34.60 where I am today without that. 00:24:34.60\00:24:38.07 She certainly has carried many of my burdens 00:24:38.07\00:24:42.18 during that time. We also take many trips to the other side of 00:24:48.05\00:24:51.15 the island where I worked in Haiti. 00:24:51.15\00:24:54.66 I was focused primarily Cure International Hospital 00:24:54.66\00:24:58.73 and Cure International is a Christian organization focus on 00:24:58.73\00:25:01.63 a 50, 50 medical spiritual ministry with the motto to 00:25:01.63\00:25:06.00 proclaim the Kingdom of God and Heal the sick. 00:25:06.00\00:25:09.17 They operate a number of children's surgical hospitals 00:25:09.17\00:25:12.84 in poor countries around the world. 00:25:12.84\00:25:16.41 They had a need for a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in their 00:25:16.41\00:25:19.75 hospital in Santo Domingo. 00:25:19.75\00:25:22.02 And this fit well with my training. And it gave me 00:25:22.02\00:25:25.62 an amazing opportunity 00:25:25.62\00:25:28.02 to serve in an effective way. 00:25:28.02\00:25:32.13 During that time, I gained 00:25:32.13\00:25:34.46 new perspectives and a vision 00:25:34.46\00:25:37.13 and what mission hospitals can be. 00:25:37.13\00:25:41.24 And it also I originally envisioned myself working at 00:25:41.24\00:25:44.67 Adventist Mission Hospital like my grandfather. 00:25:44.67\00:25:47.58 But this experience also helped me appreciate my advantage 00:25:47.58\00:25:51.05 rights. 00:25:51.05\00:25:54.45 When I was looking for when we were looking for a place 00:25:54.45\00:25:57.62 to serve, 00:25:57.62\00:25:58.95 talking to the church recruiters, they said the 00:25:58.95\00:26:01.59 orthopedics 00:26:01.59\00:26:02.99 was not needed in the mission field 00:26:02.99\00:26:06.63 and sometimes they still say that today, 00:26:06.63\00:26:09.63 but poor countries 00:26:12.77\00:26:14.64 tend to be disproportionately affected 00:26:14.64\00:26:17.74 by trauma, 00:26:17.74\00:26:19.07 natural disasters and conflict 00:26:19.07\00:26:22.91 and even more sobering. 00:26:22.91\00:26:25.31 He's a number of children suffering in this world from 00:26:25.31\00:26:28.52 treatable disabilities. 00:26:28.52\00:26:33.96 The dream and prayer of every parent in this world is that 00:26:33.96\00:26:37.49 their kids can they have healthy and happy life 00:26:37.49\00:26:41.93 here in this country? We can take our kids to the doctor and 00:26:41.93\00:26:44.40 they can receive the treatment that they need. 00:26:44.40\00:26:47.54 But in many parts of the world, this is not possible. 00:26:47.54\00:26:51.41 Kids parents give up hope, 00:26:51.41\00:26:55.04 treatable disabilities, become permanent disabilities. 00:26:55.04\00:27:01.05 And let me remind you that 00:27:01.05\00:27:03.15 these are not only physical Davis disabilities, he's affect 00:27:03.15\00:27:06.39 every aspect of their life. 00:27:06.39\00:27:08.42 These kids are marginalized. There are cer size. 00:27:08.42\00:27:12.36 They are oftentimes not even allowed to go to school because 00:27:12.36\00:27:15.33 they have a twisted foot or boat lake. 00:27:15.33\00:27:18.60 But it's because of people 00:27:21.50\00:27:25.27 James and Sarah Palin, who have spent 00:27:25.27\00:27:28.28 over 20 years of their career, people like 00:27:28.28\00:27:31.95 DNA and all the network 00:27:31.95\00:27:36.99 Wong and his wife 00:27:36.99\00:27:39.95 who have made major commitments, 00:27:39.95\00:27:42.96 2 working in places 00:27:42.96\00:27:44.99 where these treatable disabilities and people 00:27:44.99\00:27:47.83 suffering from disease exist. 00:27:47.83\00:27:53.34 It's because of our own efforts that the mayor culls 00:27:53.34\00:27:57.67 have healing can take place, 00:27:57.67\00:28:00.78 James's Palace trained in family practice. And he now 00:28:05.68\00:28:08.72 that became a general surgeon. And now he does it 90% 00:28:08.72\00:28:12.09 orthopedics 00:28:12.09\00:28:13.69 and he does it well, he does cases 00:28:13.69\00:28:16.32 that I can say most of my colleagues wouldn't even touch. 00:28:16.32\00:28:21.93 They lost one of their own children to malaria, 00:28:21.93\00:28:25.47 but they consider that 00:28:25.47\00:28:27.54 a small price for the number 00:28:27.54\00:28:30.31 of lives that they've saved and the number of lives that 00:28:30.31\00:28:33.48 they've changed. 00:28:33.48\00:28:36.64 Our medical school was established to train medical 00:28:36.64\00:28:40.02 evangelists to go into the world. 00:28:40.02\00:28:42.92 And there are now over 5,000 living graduates more than any 00:28:42.92\00:28:47.42 other medical school west of the Mississippi 00:28:47.42\00:28:52.56 and 14 of them 00:28:52.56\00:28:54.63 live and work 00:28:54.63\00:28:56.90 and the developing world 00:28:56.90\00:28:59.37 where people where the bulk of people with treatable 00:28:59.37\00:29:02.30 disabilities and other diseases are suffering. 00:29:02.30\00:29:05.74 But that changed on this girl's face before and after surgery. 00:29:13.75\00:29:18.12 I can understand 00:29:18.12\00:29:19.95 why people get addicted to gambling. 00:29:19.95\00:29:22.59 He's a country this spiraling down 00:29:26.70\00:29:29.26 faster than the bank account balance. If most gamblers, 00:29:29.26\00:29:33.97 people 00:29:33.97\00:29:35.60 sometimes say that I live there just because I like risk and 00:29:35.60\00:29:38.11 danger. 00:29:38.11\00:29:39.97 But I assure you 00:29:39.97\00:29:41.88 that is not the reason. 00:29:41.88\00:29:44.25 Its victories, small victories like this. 00:29:44.25\00:29:47.78 They give me the irresistible urge 00:29:47.78\00:29:51.05 to keep doing it. 00:29:51.05\00:29:55.49 During our time in the Dominican Republic, we traveled 00:29:55.49\00:29:57.63 frequently 00:29:57.63\00:29:58.96 to Haiti where the level of poverty is even 00:29:58.96\00:30:02.46 at another level. 00:30:02.46\00:30:06.27 And during that time on a couple of those trips, I had 00:30:06.27\00:30:08.70 the privilege of visiting the Adventist Hospital. 00:30:08.70\00:30:12.07 And I was really saddened by what I saw there. 00:30:12.07\00:30:16.54 There was decay, lack of infrastructure, 00:30:16.54\00:30:20.95 lack of efficiency. It was an embarrassing representation of 00:30:20.95\00:30:23.99 our church. 00:30:23.99\00:30:25.29 And if the healing Ministry of Jesus 00:30:25.29\00:30:28.76 Little did, I know that it would become my future home. 00:30:28.76\00:30:34.10 But our time in the Dr 00:30:34.10\00:30:36.03 came to an end quite suddenly 00:30:36.03\00:30:38.87 on January 10 and 1/12/2010, 00:30:38.87\00:30:42.97 I was on my way home from work. 00:30:42.97\00:30:45.04 I felt an earthquake. 00:30:45.04\00:30:47.54 It wasn't 00:30:47.54\00:30:48.81 terrible where we were. The epicenter was more than 200 00:30:48.81\00:30:51.91 miles away. 00:30:51.91\00:30:53.18 First, it was just a little reminder of life back in 00:30:53.18\00:30:56.05 California. 00:30:56.05\00:30:58.09 But when I realized we couldn't communicate with anybody on the 00:30:58.09\00:31:00.56 other side of the island 00:31:00.56\00:31:02.29 and having been there many times before, I begin making 00:31:02.29\00:31:04.63 preparations that night to go into the unknown, 00:31:04.63\00:31:08.76 I remember thinking 00:31:08.76\00:31:11.03 what if 00:31:11.03\00:31:12.33 through this tragedy, the Adventist Hospital could come 00:31:12.33\00:31:14.77 back to life 00:31:14.77\00:31:16.47 and once again be a shining light in this country. 00:31:16.47\00:31:21.44 That was not a dream that came true overnight. 00:31:21.44\00:31:25.45 But I can tell you 00:31:25.45\00:31:27.65 that were on that journey. 00:31:27.65\00:31:30.65 The idea is hospitals, a different place. Poor people 00:31:30.65\00:31:33.15 and all other keep the puck types of people are getting 00:31:33.15\00:31:35.16 high quality care 00:31:35.16\00:31:37.06 and life changing operations. 00:31:37.06\00:31:39.19 The Healing Ministry of Jesus Christ is alive and people now 00:31:39.19\00:31:43.80 know our hospital 00:31:43.80\00:31:45.73 as an island of hope. 00:31:45.73\00:31:49.84 When I arrived a day and a half after that earthquake, 00:31:49.84\00:31:53.01 there was people 00:31:53.01\00:31:54.41 lying. There were people lying all over the place in the 00:31:54.41\00:31:57.38 courtyard of the hospital and the yard. A few of the brave 00:31:57.38\00:32:00.22 ones actually inside the building during all the 00:32:00.22\00:32:02.32 aftershocks. 00:32:02.32\00:32:04.02 They grabbed out at our clothes, begging for help. 00:32:04.02\00:32:07.19 They had no food. They had nowhere to go to the bathroom. 00:32:07.19\00:32:09.72 There were no mattresses for them. 00:32:09.72\00:32:12.09 They were compensated dehydrated. And there are more 00:32:12.09\00:32:15.86 orthopedic emergencies 00:32:15.86\00:32:17.83 tonight ever seen in my career and more at one time in one 00:32:17.83\00:32:21.04 place probably than ever and world history. 00:32:21.04\00:32:25.74 We began operating it for the first 4 days and nights. 00:32:25.74\00:32:29.34 We couldn't go to bed because every wasted moment that more 00:32:29.34\00:32:33.42 lives lost. 00:32:33.42\00:32:36.95 This short-term disaster response chip that I did vision 00:32:36.95\00:32:40.76 turned into a 6 month venture 00:32:40.76\00:32:44.93 and while overwhelmed with the patients 00:32:44.93\00:32:47.96 from this disaster, we also 00:32:47.96\00:32:50.97 received many 00:32:50.97\00:32:53.23 who had longstanding issues, untreatable disabilities. 00:32:53.23\00:32:57.17 We also took care of them. This is style. She's a 9 00:32:57.17\00:33:00.11 year-old girl 00:33:00.11\00:33:02.01 who came to us a couple months after the earthquake. 00:33:02.01\00:33:05.68 That expertise and resources never existed in Haiti to treat 00:33:05.68\00:33:09.78 a problem like this. 00:33:09.78\00:33:12.25 Some patients didn't think they would get treated unless 00:33:12.25\00:33:15.29 they're issue was related to the earthquake. And we had to 00:33:15.29\00:33:18.29 relatively interesting histories about certain 00:33:18.29\00:33:20.90 deformities that started on January. 12th. 00:33:20.90\00:33:25.57 We took care of all of them, of course, 00:33:25.57\00:33:28.37 and not only the lives of these people. 00:33:31.31\00:33:34.08 We're change the lives of those who came and served for change. 00:33:34.08\00:33:38.08 We had many well-known orthopedic surgeons that had 00:33:38.08\00:33:41.58 the opportunity to come to our hospital and serve and they 00:33:41.58\00:33:45.22 talk about that experience with fund this. 00:33:45.22\00:33:48.82 And I've heard the word Adventist mentioned from the 00:33:48.82\00:33:53.09 podium of many orthopedic meetings around North America 00:33:53.09\00:33:56.56 and other countries of the world. Since that time, 00:33:56.56\00:34:00.24 it's they're only in it for many of them. It was their only 00:34:00.24\00:34:03.20 interaction 00:34:03.20\00:34:04.51 with our religion. 00:34:04.51\00:34:07.18 Our family was spread out during that time. And it was 00:34:13.48\00:34:16.25 time after a few months to rally back together Hand Loma 00:34:16.25\00:34:19.02 Linda claim that they had a desperate need for a pediatric 00:34:19.02\00:34:22.16 orthopedic surgeon. 00:34:22.16\00:34:24.13 Nothing seemed to desperate for me at that time that we're 00:34:24.13\00:34:26.59 looking for a place to go. We didn't really 00:34:26.59\00:34:29.33 cherish the idea of finishing off far boys upbringing in Loma 00:34:29.33\00:34:33.10 Linda. 00:34:33.10\00:34:34.24 But I had a passion for working with residents and medical 00:34:34.24\00:34:36.77 students, many of them who had come and had experiences at our 00:34:36.77\00:34:40.31 hospital during that time. 00:34:40.31\00:34:43.35 And I read 00:34:43.35\00:34:44.55 this book again about my great, great grandfather, Percy team 00:34:44.55\00:34:47.62 again, 00:34:47.62\00:34:49.15 who was a pioneer and our institution, also having 00:34:49.15\00:34:52.92 reluctant about moving to Loma Linda in 1914, where he was 00:34:52.92\00:34:56.52 called to be the dean, the medical school. 00:34:56.52\00:34:59.93 And he saw our school through some difficult and delicate 00:34:59.93\00:35:02.60 times. 00:35:02.60\00:35:04.47 Ultimately his quest to teach medical evangelism with the 00:35:04.47\00:35:09.00 highest educational standards. 00:35:09.00\00:35:11.54 What what built the foundations for what our school had become 00:35:11.54\00:35:14.24 today? 00:35:14.24\00:35:17.18 It was a very fulfilling experience for me to work in 00:35:17.18\00:35:19.71 the Melinda. I continued to travel back and forth to Haiti, 00:35:19.71\00:35:23.05 at least 3 or 4 times a year. 00:35:23.05\00:35:26.19 I had the opportunity to engage medical students and residents 00:35:26.19\00:35:29.19 into firsthand experiences of working 00:35:29.19\00:35:32.73 in this environment. 00:35:32.73\00:35:35.56 In the meantime, our boys were 00:35:35.56\00:35:38.40 going on through school and Marni realize her career that 00:35:38.40\00:35:41.44 had been devoted to raising the boys were soon going to change 00:35:41.44\00:35:44.41 when first Chad and then Alex would be moving off to college. 00:35:44.41\00:35:49.61 She had some difficult discussions with me. 00:35:49.61\00:35:53.98 Our need to move back to Haiti full-time. 00:35:53.98\00:35:57.05 I was perfectly comfortable perfectly satisfied and content 00:35:57.05\00:36:01.59 with my life of travel and work element to it. 00:36:01.59\00:36:05.46 And I didn't really see it coming a she 00:36:05.46\00:36:08.40 wasn't too happy when I told her that I just told her that 00:36:08.40\00:36:11.13 if it was the got, if it was God's will, then I would go. 00:36:11.13\00:36:13.90 I was pretty sure it wasn't God willing. She was a little 00:36:13.90\00:36:16.64 frustrated because she didn't think I was serious about that. 00:36:16.64\00:36:20.64 But as our son Alex was packing up his gear to move off to you 00:36:20.64\00:36:24.35 see that same week, 00:36:24.35\00:36:26.51 the surgeon who had been serving in Haiti for the last 00:36:26.51\00:36:29.52 few years announced that he would be returning to the 00:36:29.52\00:36:32.22 United States 00:36:32.22\00:36:35.49 when God and your wife are both telling you what to do. You 00:36:35.49\00:36:39.73 don't have any choice. 00:36:39.73\00:36:43.16 I didn't tell Marni that. I heard that announcement, 00:36:43.16\00:36:45.70 I guess schedule an appointment with D*** Hardt and McGahn Hall 00:36:45.70\00:36:49.64 and told him that we would volunteer to go to Haiti at 00:36:49.64\00:36:53.17 that time. It was just for 6 months 00:36:53.17\00:36:56.38 if he could get me out of my responsibilities at Loma Linda 00:36:56.38\00:36:58.75 and with Dick's Passion for Medical Mission Work, he said 00:36:58.75\00:37:01.82 he assured me that would be no problem. 00:37:01.82\00:37:05.09 Marni was a bit surprised to hear that 00:37:05.09\00:37:08.36 completely enthusiastic. 00:37:08.36\00:37:12.19 At that time. Our hospital was running at 15% capacity. 00:37:12.19\00:37:15.66 It was in financial crisis. Payroll was running 5 months 00:37:15.66\00:37:19.00 late. 00:37:19.00\00:37:20.30 Employees were asking for money directly from the patients for 00:37:20.30\00:37:23.54 services performed. 00:37:23.54\00:37:25.54 Start your IV if you pay me a dollar. 00:37:25.54\00:37:28.11 Well, do your operation for $200. This further undermined 00:37:28.11\00:37:31.75 the financial crisis of the hospital. 00:37:31.75\00:37:34.42 There were while a wallet biopsies being performed in the 00:37:34.42\00:37:37.25 front driveway of the emergency room. And if there was no money 00:37:37.25\00:37:40.12 found people even with life-threatening injuries, 00:37:40.12\00:37:42.69 worse turned away. 00:37:42.69\00:37:44.69 There were marketing strategies. 00:37:47.40\00:37:49.20 They had been launched to compete with local hospitals 00:37:49.20\00:37:51.53 and attract wealthy people to our hospital. 00:37:51.53\00:37:55.40 Sadly, many other mission hospitals are in 00:37:55.40\00:37:59.31 similar situation. Sustainability is difficult. 00:37:59.31\00:38:04.25 Our hospital had been largely depending on a contract it had 00:38:04.25\00:38:07.35 with the U.S. embassy. 60 1% of the income from the hospital 00:38:07.35\00:38:11.35 had been coming from this contract that was created to 00:38:11.35\00:38:16.06 provide documented physical exams for people wanting to 00:38:16.06\00:38:19.33 leave the country. 00:38:19.33\00:38:21.46 The embassy came and inspected our hospital and found 00:38:21.46\00:38:23.87 falsified reports. 00:38:23.87\00:38:26.43 Fortunately, they gave us a 3 month warning that when they 00:38:26.43\00:38:29.24 came back 3 months later, they still found the same false 00:38:29.24\00:38:31.91 reports and called the contract 00:38:31.91\00:38:35.51 seemingly 00:38:35.51\00:38:37.25 a terrible problem. This might have been the best thing to 00:38:37.25\00:38:40.12 happen to our hospital. 00:38:40.12\00:38:42.52 What was the solution? Haiti is the poorest country in the 00:38:42.52\00:38:45.29 Americas. Our hospital was completely broke. 00:38:45.29\00:38:49.12 And we had 00:38:52.59\00:38:54.83 to look back at our mission statement, 00:38:54.83\00:38:59.47 the mission of our hospitals to continue the Healing Ministry 00:38:59.47\00:39:02.34 of Jesus Christ by offering high quality care to all 00:39:02.34\00:39:05.17 classes of people. 00:39:05.17\00:39:07.74 And there are 3 parts 00:39:07.74\00:39:10.08 to this mission statement. 00:39:10.08\00:39:13.52 I'm going to start by first saying high quality care 00:39:13.52\00:39:17.49 that is provided 00:39:17.49\00:39:19.19 to all classes. The second to all classes of People 00:39:19.19\00:39:24.13 Ministry of Jesus Christ is all about. He didn't have 00:39:24.13\00:39:27.40 complications when he healed people. They didn't get wound 00:39:27.40\00:39:30.77 infections after work 00:39:30.77\00:39:33.20 and he didn't turn away poor people in order for us to have 00:39:33.20\00:39:36.74 the privilege have claiming that we are providing the 00:39:36.74\00:39:40.18 healing Ministry of Jesus. We need to provide the highest 00:39:40.18\00:39:43.98 quality care and give it to everybody. 00:39:43.98\00:39:47.75 So when we arrived there and I suggested to the employees 00:39:52.42\00:39:56.93 who hadn't been paid for 5 months, who are having 00:39:56.93\00:39:58.96 difficulty keeping food on their table, who are having 00:39:58.96\00:40:01.10 difficulty keeping their kids in school 00:40:01.10\00:40:04.73 when the new foreign doctors suggested that we lower our 00:40:04.73\00:40:07.47 prices and open our doors to poor people, 00:40:07.47\00:40:12.74 see how that was going to work. 00:40:12.74\00:40:14.91 You can only imagine the response. 00:40:14.91\00:40:17.65 This has been a long journey, 00:40:17.65\00:40:19.91 but fortunately 00:40:19.91\00:40:21.78 many have supported it. 00:40:21.78\00:40:23.95 And most of all, the Lord has been able to in blasts S in 00:40:23.95\00:40:26.82 amazing ways by prioritizing this mission. 00:40:26.82\00:40:32.13 When we made the commitment to go there, 00:40:32.13\00:40:34.13 I knew that I was going to be overwhelmed by admitted by 00:40:34.13\00:40:36.40 administrative issues. And I wanted to be a doctor 00:40:36.40\00:40:42.17 and our church here and Callum Mesa, California, 00:40:42.17\00:40:45.51 Jerry Chris Benge and his wife, Marion, 00:40:45.51\00:40:48.18 have been long members that are always interested in the work 00:40:48.18\00:40:50.58 in Haiti, had been there a couple of times. He's a retired 00:40:50.58\00:40:52.98 it executive 00:40:52.98\00:40:54.55 and I asked him in a parking lot after church. If he and his 00:40:54.55\00:40:57.69 wife would be willing to go and join us for that initial 6 00:40:57.69\00:41:01.62 month period of time and help sort out some of the 00:41:01.62\00:41:04.63 administrative issues. 00:41:04.63\00:41:06.46 He said he would talk to Marion and the next day he called me 00:41:06.46\00:41:09.00 and said that they were committed. 00:41:09.00\00:41:12.67 The short end of that story is is that 00:41:12.67\00:41:15.70 6 years later morning, I are still in Haiti, Gerry and Mary 00:41:15.70\00:41:19.44 and now 80 years old are still in Haiti and they come 00:41:19.44\00:41:23.98 committed an inhibited by all the dangers. 00:41:23.98\00:41:29.18 Another huge blessing to us. 00:41:29.18\00:41:31.39 But Jeff Cho and his wife Jeffs to medical evangelist of the 00:41:31.39\00:41:35.36 highest order. I'm sure some of you know him. 00:41:35.36\00:41:38.13 Michelle is an architect and designer 00:41:38.13\00:41:40.46 and we needed her services at our hospital almost as much as 00:41:40.46\00:41:44.27 he has. 00:41:44.27\00:41:46.47 Some people think 00:41:46.47\00:41:48.64 we and I should maybe say myself for a little bit extreme 00:41:48.64\00:41:51.51 and irrational. 00:41:51.51\00:41:52.84 But the Cho family that remember, I remind you that 00:41:52.84\00:41:55.64 these are refined and intelligent people. 00:41:55.64\00:41:58.45 They also made a similar commitment. 00:41:58.45\00:42:01.85 We didn't envision 00:42:01.85\00:42:04.15 that the Lord way to end their time with us quite as soon as 00:42:04.15\00:42:07.39 he did. But they were with us for 2 years in Haiti. And now 00:42:07.39\00:42:09.89 they've gone to expand this same work at the hospital and 00:42:09.89\00:42:14.20 believes which has been a huge blessing. 00:42:14.20\00:42:17.60 And we have many of our local staff that also contribute to 00:42:17.60\00:42:20.27 this effort. 00:42:20.27\00:42:21.77 Our hospital, 75 beds. We have 250 employees. 75% of them her 00:42:21.77\00:42:27.58 address. 00:42:27.58\00:42:29.31 We have more advantages around us in Haiti. Then I think we 00:42:29.31\00:42:33.25 do. And Melinda, 00:42:33.25\00:42:35.18 there are more than 5 churches in at least this crowded every 00:42:35.18\00:42:38.59 sabbath morning. Within a 5 minute walking distance of my 00:42:38.59\00:42:41.29 house. 00:42:41.29\00:42:42.92 We can listen to him services from a church overhear him 00:42:42.92\00:42:46.80 services from a church over here and oftentimes gunfire off 00:42:46.80\00:42:50.50 in the background. 00:42:50.50\00:42:52.43 This is the administering of or city church celebrating 100 00:42:52.43\00:42:55.30 years have education and a rally at the stadium downtown 00:42:55.30\00:43:00.21 where 00:43:00.21\00:43:01.38 hundreds 100's of people were baptized 7 above ground pools 00:43:01.38\00:43:05.11 where they were baptizing somebody every 90 seconds for 3 00:43:05.11\00:43:08.15 hours that afternoon. 00:43:08.15\00:43:10.45 Unfortunately, 00:43:15.19\00:43:16.93 the country of Haiti is in crisis. 00:43:16.93\00:43:19.63 These are our neighbors. 00:43:19.63\00:43:23.57 Armed gangs now control 80% of our city 00:43:23.57\00:43:27.94 without any functioning government. Gangs blocked the 00:43:27.94\00:43:30.24 roads, exploit local businesses, kidnap rape, 00:43:30.24\00:43:33.07 kill, steal without any repercussions. 00:43:33.07\00:43:37.38 On 7/7/2021, the President 00:43:40.52\00:43:43.95 Jovenel Moise was assassinated in some mysterious 00:43:43.95\00:43:47.42 circumstances in the middle of the night. 00:43:47.42\00:43:51.09 And now 00:43:51.09\00:43:52.26 our new President, Ariel honoree and administers 00:43:52.26\00:43:55.90 neurosurgeon who was previously the medical director at our 00:43:55.90\00:43:59.17 hospital. He's the prime minister. 00:43:59.17\00:44:03.27 He's a good man, but his job is almost impossible. And people 00:44:03.27\00:44:07.24 are frustrated. 00:44:07.24\00:44:10.28 2 months after this 00:44:10.28\00:44:12.45 Haiti experience, another major earthquake where over 3,000 00:44:12.45\00:44:15.85 people lost their lives. 00:44:15.85\00:44:18.79 It happened on a Saturday morning 00:44:18.79\00:44:22.46 as the news started coming in 00:44:22.46\00:44:25.33 from the town. Most affected about 4 hours away from us. 00:44:25.33\00:44:29.76 I realize 00:44:29.76\00:44:31.37 that we needed to take action. 00:44:31.37\00:44:33.44 I went on the administrative station and made an 00:44:33.44\00:44:35.37 announcement 00:44:35.37\00:44:37.17 that we would take care of any and all earthquakes victims at 00:44:37.17\00:44:40.01 our hospital. 00:44:40.01\00:44:41.68 We didn't know how we were going to do this. We didn't 00:44:41.68\00:44:43.58 know how we have the capacity or the resources, 00:44:43.58\00:44:46.51 but we stepped out on faith and we knew that was the right 00:44:46.51\00:44:48.68 thing to do. 00:44:48.68\00:44:51.32 Ambulances started coming that night dropping off victims 00:44:51.32\00:44:55.02 soon. Our beds were full. We had to open up the area 00:44:55.02\00:44:57.89 under construction and add more badge add mattresses on the 00:44:57.89\00:45:00.96 floor. 00:45:00.96\00:45:03.33 These this picture is several days after 00:45:03.33\00:45:08.27 MSF, which is Doctors Without Borders. That's awesome. 00:45:08.27\00:45:11.07 Frontier. The standard for offering trauma care all over 00:45:11.07\00:45:14.78 the city of Haiti, they were bringing their patients, 00:45:14.78\00:45:17.65 referring them to the hospital for a higher level of care. 00:45:17.65\00:45:22.82 We were much better prepared for this disaster than we had 00:45:22.82\00:45:25.69 been in the past. 00:45:25.69\00:45:27.39 This is a 16 year-old girl that was running out of the market 00:45:27.39\00:45:30.89 during that earthquake and fractured both of our femurs 00:45:30.89\00:45:34.40 the person beside or didn't make it 00:45:34.40\00:45:38.30 with a simple to our operation. 00:45:38.30\00:45:42.10 She now 00:45:42.10\00:45:43.94 he's able to avoid a lifetime of disability. 00:45:43.94\00:45:48.64 Some people from the NBC News crew. It stopped by that day 00:45:48.64\00:45:51.45 and they did a small interview with her. 00:45:51.45\00:45:53.72 It was on international news. 00:45:53.72\00:45:57.02 This man is a 57 year-old who had broken his femur 9 months 00:45:57.02\00:46:00.66 before the earthquake. It had never been treated. He was 00:46:00.66\00:46:02.92 still in bed 00:46:02.92\00:46:04.59 in a hospital 00:46:04.59\00:46:06.23 trying to escape 00:46:06.23\00:46:08.60 earthquake struck and he broke his femur again. 00:46:08.60\00:46:13.60 We were able to do a similar operation for him to get him 00:46:13.60\00:46:15.97 back on his feet. 00:46:15.97\00:46:17.84 2 months after the earthquake, 00:46:20.64\00:46:23.41 17 Americans were kidnapped 00:46:23.41\00:46:27.32 across town 00:46:27.32\00:46:28.65 before this time. We thought maybe we're a little bit immune 00:46:28.65\00:46:31.49 to some of that civil unrest 00:46:31.49\00:46:35.19 thinking that the gangsters didn't want to mess with the 00:46:35.19\00:46:37.93 international 00:46:37.93\00:46:39.59 crisis. They didn't want to possibly face being extradited 00:46:39.59\00:46:43.30 and have life in prison 00:46:43.30\00:46:48.44 when 6.17 missionaries were kidnapped. 00:46:48.44\00:46:52.51 It was quite unnerving for us. 00:46:52.51\00:46:55.18 I remember I was actually here on that day 00:46:55.18\00:46:58.81 and a few days later 00:46:58.81\00:47:01.02 after everybody pleaded for me not to go back. 00:47:01.02\00:47:05.22 I was one of the only Americans on that plane and it was a bit 00:47:05.22\00:47:11.69 but nonetheless 00:47:11.69\00:47:13.23 dependence on God. 00:47:13.23\00:47:15.10 It was comforting. 00:47:15.10\00:47:17.60 It was the right decision 00:47:17.60\00:47:19.87 up till that time. Even the 2 doctors from our hospital who 00:47:19.87\00:47:23.17 had been kidnapped and then released after several days and 00:47:23.17\00:47:26.17 every morning we woke up saying our prayers that these people 00:47:26.17\00:47:28.78 would be released. There was women, children and an infant 00:47:28.78\00:47:31.78 involved. 00:47:31.78\00:47:33.08 One week went by 2 weeks, went by 3 weeks, went by 00:47:33.08\00:47:36.79 2 people have gotten sick. They released them another few 00:47:36.79\00:47:39.92 weeks went by 3 more people 00:47:39.92\00:47:42.52 got sick and they were released. 00:47:42.52\00:47:44.49 And on December 00:47:44.49\00:47:46.19 16, exactly 2 months 00:47:46.19\00:47:49.23 after they had been kidnapped, 00:47:49.23\00:47:53.20 been able to save a small stick from the yard and this area 00:47:53.20\00:47:57.27 that they were locked up in 00:47:57.27\00:47:59.34 and in the middle of the night, the guards were asleep. They 00:47:59.34\00:48:01.88 use that stick to flip the latch and they made a daring 00:48:01.88\00:48:04.85 escape with a one year-old infant. 00:48:04.85\00:48:07.62 The last 12 people, 00:48:07.62\00:48:10.19 the guards 00:48:10.19\00:48:12.69 who claimed that they had been paid 00:48:12.69\00:48:15.66 the healthy ransom to allow them to leave. Nobody believed 00:48:15.66\00:48:19.43 this story in Haiti. 00:48:19.43\00:48:22.50 His story 00:48:22.50\00:48:23.80 familiar to us from 2000 years ago, 00:48:23.80\00:48:28.44 the U.S. State Department, 00:48:32.64\00:48:34.91 he's told all Americans to leave. 00:48:34.91\00:48:37.48 Friends and family pleaded for us to leave Haiti. 00:48:37.48\00:48:40.45 People question our judgment. 00:48:40.45\00:48:43.59 People who read the Bible, the spirit of prophecy grew up with 00:48:43.59\00:48:46.29 mission story say don't go. 00:48:46.29\00:48:49.52 It's too dangerous. 00:48:49.52\00:48:51.43 Go somewhere else. There's plenty of people in this world 00:48:51.43\00:48:53.80 that need help. 00:48:53.80\00:48:55.03 I gave you a brain. He expects you to use it. 00:48:55.03\00:49:01.34 But Eli and those who have gone before us, 00:49:01.34\00:49:05.04 I can tell you 00:49:05.04\00:49:06.68 the risks of living in Haiti 00:49:06.68\00:49:08.98 are nothing new. 00:49:08.98\00:49:12.18 The disciples only preach the gospel where it was easy where 00:49:12.18\00:49:15.12 they could avoid being put in prison. 00:49:15.12\00:49:19.65 You know, I had to 3 to find my definition of safety. Things 00:49:19.65\00:49:23.22 have gotten progressively danger and more dangerous where 00:49:23.22\00:49:25.39 we live people ask me at what point will you actually decide 00:49:25.39\00:49:29.60 that it's time to leave 00:49:29.60\00:49:33.23 where they say are you safe? 00:49:33.23\00:49:35.60 And now I can confidently tell all of you 00:49:35.60\00:49:38.74 that we are safe 00:49:38.74\00:49:40.81 because I have redefined the definition of safety by being 00:49:40.81\00:49:44.78 where God wants me to be 00:49:44.78\00:49:49.32 bad. Things can happen to any of us at any time. But there's 00:49:49.32\00:49:53.02 a piece 00:49:53.02\00:49:54.19 that comes with knowing 00:49:54.19\00:49:56.32 that we are what God wants us to be. 00:49:56.32\00:49:59.23 It's not an automatic insurance policy against kidnapping 00:49:59.23\00:50:02.93 against death against disease, 00:50:02.93\00:50:05.70 but there's a comfort 00:50:05.70\00:50:09.84 in our hospital. We care for the band as we care for their 00:50:09.84\00:50:12.11 opponents. We have to care for victims. 00:50:12.11\00:50:15.44 These 00:50:15.44\00:50:17.65 are people that have made bad decisions in life, 00:50:17.65\00:50:21.65 but there's hope 00:50:21.65\00:50:23.22 many of them are young boys, 00:50:23.22\00:50:25.75 14, 15, 16 years old. 00:50:25.75\00:50:28.86 They're not in school because the unemployment rate there is 00:50:28.86\00:50:31.29 80%. And if they go to the effort 00:50:31.29\00:50:34.10 being in school, it won't be worth it. Their parents don't 00:50:34.10\00:50:38.13 have jobs. There's no food on the table and somebody comes 00:50:38.13\00:50:41.24 and offers them a paycheck and a weapon. 00:50:41.24\00:50:45.17 What do you expect them to do? 00:50:45.17\00:50:48.44 This is the layout of our city. Our hospital is just outside of 00:50:48.44\00:50:51.41 town. 00:50:51.41\00:50:52.61 The gangs have taken a strong hold on the road between us and 00:50:52.61\00:50:55.45 downtown. 00:50:55.45\00:50:57.02 Now just to get to the airport, to go to town, to get supplies. 00:50:57.02\00:51:00.16 We have to go through a very rough 00:51:00.16\00:51:02.09 four-wheel-drive mountain road. 00:51:02.09\00:51:05.36 It almost makes you think back on those stories and when 00:51:08.50\00:51:11.63 you're a kid and you heard about the end of time when you 00:51:11.63\00:51:13.74 had to flee into the mountains, 00:51:13.74\00:51:16.27 in reality, I kind of enjoy the rough mountain road. And I even 00:51:16.27\00:51:19.47 have a lot of friends here that it's been a lot of money and 00:51:19.47\00:51:21.94 time trying to find roads like that in this country. So I 00:51:21.94\00:51:24.65 consider it a privilege. 00:51:24.65\00:51:26.72 But 90% of all of the missionaries in Haiti have 00:51:30.19\00:51:33.56 left. 00:51:33.56\00:51:35.62 Many Haitians are leaving. 00:51:35.62\00:51:38.39 There's a humanitarian parole program. 7,500 per month are 00:51:38.39\00:51:42.53 going through that another 10,000 every month. They're 00:51:42.53\00:51:45.27 flying to Nicaragua and trying to migrate the difficult road 00:51:45.27\00:51:50.11 up through Mexico. 00:51:50.11\00:51:51.91 We've lost 30 of our hospital employees. We've lost 00:51:51.91\00:51:55.64 directors in our hospital. People that we fostered train 00:51:55.64\00:51:59.41 through the last 6 years who suddenly they text you that 00:51:59.41\00:52:02.55 they're on a plane to New York. 00:52:02.55\00:52:05.99 We've lost the head of nursing, the head of the operating room, 00:52:05.99\00:52:08.66 the head doctor in the emergency room, the head nurse 00:52:08.66\00:52:10.73 in the emergency room. They're not just the gardeners and the 00:52:10.73\00:52:13.96 lower level labors 00:52:13.96\00:52:17.57 to difficult situation, 00:52:17.57\00:52:20.60 but it's all worth it 00:52:20.60\00:52:22.00 when we remember the reasons we do it. 00:52:22.00\00:52:25.57 This isn't a says she's a 6 year-old girl that was hit by a 00:52:25.57\00:52:27.91 car. 00:52:27.91\00:52:30.21 She had a terrible injury of her left leg. We had debris did 00:52:30.21\00:52:32.85 it several times. 00:52:32.85\00:52:34.88 I can show that picture of the operation because I've gotten 00:52:34.88\00:52:37.92 in trouble and church another likewise places for showing 00:52:37.92\00:52:40.86 surgery pictures. 00:52:40.86\00:52:43.29 But we had to edge of her for an amputation and their parents 00:52:43.29\00:52:46.36 reluctantly can consented and it seems like a defeat. We took 00:52:46.36\00:52:50.13 her back that day. 00:52:50.13\00:52:52.47 That operation we thought maybe there's a chance we can just a 00:52:52.47\00:52:56.47 visual, just clean it up. One more time 00:52:56.47\00:52:59.74 after that surgery, she started the saturation had hemoglobin a 00:52:59.74\00:53:03.48 3.6. 00:53:03.48\00:53:06.51 At that point, her life was in serious danger. They gain 00:53:06.51\00:53:08.98 shares had blocked the roads around us and we couldn't get 00:53:08.98\00:53:11.15 oxygen. 00:53:11.15\00:53:13.12 We've been planning to build an oxygen generator in our 00:53:13.12\00:53:16.83 hospital for the last 2 years. 00:53:16.83\00:53:19.43 This is a difficult process 00:53:19.43\00:53:21.53 figuring out how to make this happen in the head, then coming 00:53:21.53\00:53:25.37 to fruition. We had to we had received the equipment 00:53:25.37\00:53:29.77 when it came into the port. We couldn't bring it to a 00:53:29.77\00:53:31.71 hospital because it would have been hijacked by the gangsters 00:53:31.71\00:53:34.11 who had to put on a boat and float it 00:53:34.11\00:53:36.31 around the 5 miles of road that are held by the gangsters and 00:53:36.31\00:53:39.28 get to our hospital the week before he got in there. And 00:53:39.28\00:53:42.62 that same day 00:53:42.62\00:53:44.32 we were able to turn it on for the first time. 00:53:44.32\00:53:48.59 I'm quite certain that she wouldn't be alive today 00:53:48.59\00:53:51.93 without that. And 00:53:51.93\00:53:54.50 it's even a greater blessing in miracle that she's walking 00:53:54.50\00:53:58.00 today with full function of her leg. 00:53:58.00\00:54:02.50 These guys came from opposite ends of the island opposite 00:54:02.50\00:54:04.91 deformities. But with similar operation, they met each other 00:54:04.91\00:54:07.81 as roommates at our hospital and supported each other 00:54:07.81\00:54:12.01 difficulty after surgery. 00:54:12.01\00:54:14.52 This lady has been suffering from my femur fracture for 9 00:54:14.52\00:54:18.52 years, not able to walk the same because she didn't get 00:54:18.52\00:54:21.22 treatment for something as simple as a femur fracture. 00:54:21.22\00:54:24.63 And again, 9 much before that, she broke her femur again. 00:54:24.63\00:54:27.46 And then finally we found out that we were there to take care 00:54:27.46\00:54:30.43 of it. 00:54:30.43\00:54:31.80 And now she's walking. Normally, 00:54:31.80\00:54:36.30 this is our dental clinic that we opened up last month, 00:54:36.30\00:54:39.61 but a beautiful place. 00:54:39.61\00:54:42.98 This is made by local labors with mostly local materials, 00:54:42.98\00:54:47.78 people that are just trying to keep their kids in school. 00:54:47.78\00:54:52.29 We went to extra efforts to make it a beautiful place to 00:54:52.29\00:54:55.12 make it. It's the only place that poor people can come to 00:54:55.12\00:54:57.99 receive dental care, 00:54:57.99\00:55:00.10 but it's also the best place to anybody can come to receive 00:55:00.10\00:55:04.03 dental care 00:55:04.03\00:55:05.30 and by putting forth extra effort to make our hospital a 00:55:05.30\00:55:07.84 beautiful place. It can truly they represent 00:55:07.84\00:55:11.71 the Ministry of Jesus Christ in the high quality care that 00:55:11.71\00:55:15.78 we're getting. 00:55:15.78\00:55:18.05 This is the ward at a hospital that we just finished 00:55:18.05\00:55:21.52 remodeling last month, opening up fresh air oxygen now 00:55:21.52\00:55:26.92 available in every room place to wash our hands after seeing 00:55:26.92\00:55:31.13 patients. 00:55:31.13\00:55:34.46 And these are the reasons that we do it all. 00:55:34.46\00:55:38.07 There are many complicated orthopedic operations, but I 00:55:38.07\00:55:40.27 can tell you there's hardly any operation that I can't perform 00:55:40.27\00:55:43.74 at a hospital in Haiti with the same quality that I do for 00:55:43.74\00:55:47.84 kids. 00:55:47.84\00:55:49.11 We have our own here 00:55:49.11\00:55:50.95 in California. 00:55:50.95\00:55:54.78 This girl suffered an injury from the first earthquake in 00:55:54.78\00:55:57.15 2010 came back to our hospital 8 years later after having 00:55:57.15\00:56:01.72 growth arrest as a result from the injury. 00:56:01.72\00:56:05.33 And we're really straighten her leg and put her back 00:56:05.33\00:56:09.66 into a normal life. 00:56:09.66\00:56:11.13 It is our chapel bizarre physical therapy session, 00:56:11.13\00:56:13.60 every sabbath morning where we also have chapel every morning 00:56:13.60\00:56:16.81 of the week. 00:56:16.81\00:56:17.97 And this patient here getting baptized, had extra fixated on 00:56:17.97\00:56:21.64 his like he came to me quite distraught because he has extra 00:56:21.64\00:56:25.18 fixating said, I want to be baptized, but I have this 00:56:25.18\00:56:27.88 external fixate or on my leg. 00:56:27.88\00:56:30.29 Can it go in the water? 00:56:30.29\00:56:32.19 We've got all of our patients going swimming pools with 00:56:32.19\00:56:34.36 external fix, a nurse. I assured him it was no problem 00:56:34.36\00:56:37.86 to get baptized with his ex turnell fixated on it. He was 00:56:37.86\00:56:40.50 so happy. 00:56:40.50\00:56:44.87 This is doctor our service and Doctor Connors Baby Conner's. 00:56:44.87\00:56:47.47 A graduate of Loma Linda finishes orthopedics a year ago 00:56:47.47\00:56:50.71 and spent a year with me doing a fellowship, learning about 00:56:50.71\00:56:54.11 mission service, learning about global Orthopedics 00:56:54.11\00:56:57.35 and Isaac finished his residency in Haiti. 00:56:57.35\00:57:01.22 We have residents also from the local hospital rotating with 00:57:01.22\00:57:04.05 us. 00:57:04.05\00:57:05.62 Isaac is now after doing a fellowship with us working in 00:57:05.62\00:57:09.19 the northern part of Haiti in a very remote area that has no 00:57:09.19\00:57:12.26 orthopedic surgeons 00:57:12.26\00:57:14.23 in Haiti. There's quite a few orthopedic surgeons being 00:57:14.23\00:57:17.20 produced in Raleigh relationship to the number of 00:57:17.20\00:57:20.07 hospitals and the economic situation. But many of them 00:57:20.07\00:57:23.17 don't have work because even if they're willing to take care of 00:57:23.17\00:57:26.07 patients on a charitable basis, patients can pay for implants. 00:57:26.07\00:57:29.41 They can't pay for hospitalization. And there's no 00:57:29.41\00:57:31.65 way to get these patients with treatable disabilities taking 00:57:31.65\00:57:35.18 care of, even though we have surgeons able to do the work. 00:57:35.18\00:57:38.95 And that's where our hospital has a special role. 00:57:38.95\00:57:42.42 Many of the graduated residents from orthopedic surgery and 00:57:42.42\00:57:45.83 other programs in Haiti have moved to the United States and 00:57:45.83\00:57:49.13 now work at fast food restaurants where they can earn 00:57:49.13\00:57:51.67 more money than being a surgeon and a country like Haiti where 00:57:51.67\00:57:54.94 it's needed. Most 00:57:54.94\00:57:57.11 Clifford has osteogenesis in perfect 00:57:57.11\00:58:00.14 and after a brief operation 00:58:00.14\00:58:03.14 can now 00:58:03.14\00:58:04.58 realize the opportunities in life, 00:58:04.58\00:58:09.22 I'm going to conclude with a confession 00:58:09.22\00:58:13.15 because over the years I have failed so many times 00:58:13.15\00:58:17.76 and as time goes on 00:58:17.76\00:58:19.53 more and more, I realize how little I know 00:58:19.53\00:58:23.03 about taking care, 00:58:23.03\00:58:25.10 the suffering people in the world 00:58:25.10\00:58:29.27 in my early years of mission service, it was actually easier 00:58:29.27\00:58:31.94 to prepare talks like this. 00:58:31.94\00:58:34.18 I was a bit naive, 00:58:34.18\00:58:36.95 but I had a sense of clarity, a sense of clarity that I have to 00:58:36.95\00:58:40.02 look back on. 00:58:40.02\00:58:41.45 And that's why I added this picture to the end of my talk 00:58:41.45\00:58:44.55 from 00:58:44.55\00:58:45.55 15 years ago when I first started working in Haiti 00:58:45.55\00:58:49.49 have become less clear with time as I learn more and more 00:58:52.63\00:58:57.17 but some things. 00:58:57.17\00:58:58.63 I also become more sheriff 00:58:58.63\00:59:01.67 and I know for sure that we don't have to accept the K 00:59:01.67\00:59:05.54 and lack of infrastructure as the inevitable norm at Mission 00:59:05.54\00:59:09.81 Hospital, 00:59:09.81\00:59:11.51 high quality care for all classes of people 00:59:11.51\00:59:15.68 with a special preference for the poor 00:59:15.68\00:59:19.29 enables us to share the presence of God 00:59:19.29\00:59:22.96 with everyone around us. 00:59:22.96\00:59:28.26 The how when, and where of medical evangelism may be 00:59:28.26\00:59:32.10 slightly different for each one of us. 00:59:32.10\00:59:34.94 But the reason 00:59:34.94\00:59:37.01 we proclaim God's love 00:59:37.01\00:59:39.51 to those around us is the same. And that's why we're all here 00:59:39.51\00:59:42.98 today. 00:59:42.98\00:59:45.35 May you continue in his presence? 00:59:45.35\00:59:48.45 So you and those around you 00:59:48.45\00:59:51.22 can experience the fullness of joy 00:59:51.22\00:59:54.79 and at his right hand. Pleasure 00:59:54.79\00:59:57.76 forevermore. 00:59:57.76\00:59:59.43 Amen. 00:59:59.43\01:00:00.40 [MUSIC] 01:00:00.40\01:00:05.37 [MUSIC] 01:00:05.37\01:00:10.37 [MUSIC] 01:00:10.37\01:00:25.39
