Let me first of all define 00:01:22.74\00:01:25.78 the term Alzheimer's disease what exactly 00:01:25.81\00:01:29.02 is it? Okay, Alzheimer's disease is basically a 00:01:29.05\00:01:31.82 progression deterioration of the brain 00:01:31.85\00:01:34.32 mental function. It affects the neurons 00:01:34.35\00:01:38.21 or brain cells, nerve cells there. It also 00:01:38.24\00:01:41.92 affects the access where the nerves interlock 00:01:41.95\00:01:46.72 with one and another, so that transmissions 00:01:46.75\00:01:48.40 of nerve impulses is interfered. So, that's 00:01:48.43\00:01:51.71 where you have several problems in that area. 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.63 It can be mild, it can also be severe just 00:01:54.11\00:01:56.41 depending on the type, the severity of 00:01:56.44\00:01:59.27 Alzheimer's diseases, and how long the person 00:01:59.30\00:02:01.03 has had it and diagnoses and that kind of thing 00:02:01.06\00:02:03.84 so. It's a very progressive disease 00:02:03.87\00:02:07.11 of mental function. 00:02:07.14\00:02:08.66 So, I guess we're gonna talk about the fact it 00:02:09.38\00:02:11.73 can be progressive, it can start 00:02:11.76\00:02:14.21 anytime in a person's life I guess? 00:02:14.24\00:02:16.70 Well, getting down to the statistics, 00:02:16.73\00:02:19.10 usually it starts around age of 65 years of age 00:02:19.13\00:02:22.19 but again as we grow older of course it can 00:02:22.22\00:02:25.86 be more progressively worse as we grow older 00:02:25.89\00:02:29.49 with age. And I don't want to get into stats, 00:02:29.52\00:02:31.28 but I just want to look at you know because I 00:02:31.31\00:02:32.84 there are times when I lose my keys, I can't 00:02:32.87\00:02:35.12 find them, I am going somewhere I 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.47 run down the steps, okay, and I get down to 00:02:37.50\00:02:39.55 the bottom of steps, and I can't figure out 00:02:39.58\00:02:40.95 what I was supposed to doing, so I run back up the 00:02:40.98\00:02:42.73 steps and it's somehow right in the middle of 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.94 the step you know half way up I remember 00:02:44.97\00:02:47.64 exactly what I was supposed be doing, so 00:02:47.67\00:02:49.04 that's the reason why it's kind of hard 00:02:49.07\00:02:50.72 at first I asked that question. 00:02:50.75\00:02:52.12 Okay if that's true then about 95 percent of us 00:02:52.38\00:02:56.40 have Alzheimer's disease, but Alzheimer's 00:02:56.43\00:02:58.86 disease is not when you forget where you place 00:02:58.89\00:03:01.42 your car keys, okay. Alzheimer's disease 00:03:01.45\00:03:03.56 is where you forget what car keys are used for, 00:03:03.59\00:03:06.43 I see, so there is a difference there. 00:03:06.46\00:03:08.18 There is a severe mental malfunction as 00:03:08.21\00:03:11.55 far as reasoning and that kind of thing so. 00:03:11.58\00:03:14.26 It's not just forgetting things but 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.79 it's more severe then that. 00:03:15.82\00:03:17.80 Well my daughter always says to me I am just too 00:03:18.20\00:03:19.82 busy, I guess that's the reason why I forget 00:03:19.85\00:03:21.46 things. But let's talk about the symptoms 00:03:21.49\00:03:24.17 of how does a person know that they have 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.71 contracted Alzheimer's disease? Okay, 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.13 now of course an autopsy is the most way of 00:03:28.66\00:03:32.73 determining whether a person has Alzheimer's 00:03:32.76\00:03:34.45 disease. And of course we have to have 00:03:34.48\00:03:35.85 brain tissue and looking under microscope. 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.99 Well that's best done when a person has 00:03:38.38\00:03:40.27 passed. So, when a person is alive, 00:03:40.30\00:03:42.48 a doctor will say you will have probable 00:03:42.51\00:03:45.33 Alzheimer's disease, about 85-90 percent, 00:03:45.36\00:03:47.83 it's not conclusive. But the question 00:03:48.35\00:03:50.94 is how it can be diagnosed, okay, 00:03:50.97\00:03:53.56 or the symptoms, the symptoms. 00:03:53.59\00:03:54.96 Okay the symptoms, okay, the symptoms 00:03:54.99\00:03:56.75 well first of all sometimes it first deals 00:03:56.78\00:04:00.47 with depression psychosis because we're 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.40 dealing with their frontal lobe, so if 00:04:03.43\00:04:05.19 that's the case then you have depression 00:04:05.22\00:04:06.82 and psychosis. Sometimes it deals 00:04:06.85\00:04:09.49 with the physical outburst, memory, lack 00:04:09.52\00:04:14.98 of visual perception because it deals 00:04:15.01\00:04:18.58 with also the hippocampus area as 00:04:18.61\00:04:20.92 well. So just depends on where it 00:04:20.95\00:04:23.46 deals with depending on what symptoms a person 00:04:23.49\00:04:26.49 may have. Now again you have outburst, 00:04:26.52\00:04:29.28 you have emotional outburst, 00:04:29.31\00:04:30.68 physical outburst, speech, lack of recall, 00:04:30.71\00:04:35.36 memory. This is short term memory, 00:04:35.39\00:04:38.52 not so much long term memory. So there 00:04:38.55\00:04:41.20 there are different symptoms that person does 00:04:41.23\00:04:43.23 have with Alzheimer's disease. 00:04:43.39\00:04:44.96 A short term meaning something that you might 00:04:45.03\00:04:46.62 forget or someone says something to you 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.60 at that moment and you forget it, yes, rather 00:04:49.63\00:04:51.94 then something I might know or someone might 00:04:51.97\00:04:54.04 know from the past. 00:04:54.07\00:04:55.44 Right, yeah most people who have Alzheimer's 00:04:55.53\00:04:57.79 disease will remember things 10 or 20 years 00:04:57.82\00:05:00.32 ago, but not 10 or 20 minutes ago because the 00:05:00.35\00:05:03.33 memory is not there because the malfunction 00:05:03.36\00:05:05.66 of neurons that nerve impulse simply has 00:05:05.69\00:05:08.82 not been transmitted 00:05:08.85\00:05:10.22 to the next neuron in the brain. 00:05:10.25\00:05:11.88 Now you made this comment about outbursts, 00:05:12.31\00:05:14.34 you know there's lot of people who have 00:05:14.37\00:05:16.43 outburst continuously so what do you 00:05:16.46\00:05:18.01 mean by the outburst, is it like something 00:05:18.04\00:05:19.88 that the person might be in a normalcy where 00:05:19.91\00:05:22.67 they are always okay and all of a sudden 00:05:22.70\00:05:25.01 they act out. Yeah as far as their 00:05:25.04\00:05:27.77 voice and also as far as their physical nature 00:05:27.80\00:05:30.65 is concerned, we get more to that 00:05:30.68\00:05:32.74 part two next week. 00:05:32.77\00:05:34.15 We're gonna go right into the brain and we 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.37 will look at two of the major hallmarks 00:05:36.40\00:05:38.40 of Alzheimer's disease by autopsy. 00:05:38.43\00:05:41.18 But for this week only physical symptoms 00:05:41.56\00:05:44.43 or basically outbursts and we go more 00:05:44.46\00:05:47.00 into that next week, we go into 00:05:47.03\00:05:48.48 the brain and see how that works out. 00:05:48.51\00:05:50.31 So how is it diagnosed? 00:05:50.34\00:05:51.71 Well like I said before autopsy is the most way 00:05:51.74\00:05:54.92 of confirming of Alzheimer's disease 00:05:54.95\00:05:57.42 patient. But again there are some several 00:05:57.45\00:06:00.05 tests that doctor will take and sometimes 00:06:00.08\00:06:02.42 it's based on eliminating other 00:06:02.45\00:06:04.25 probable symptoms that mimics 00:06:04.28\00:06:06.69 Alzheimer's disease such as they will 00:06:06.72\00:06:08.83 rule out stroke, okay. 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.60 They will rule out deficiency of B12 00:06:10.82\00:06:12.57 because that deals with central nervous system. 00:06:12.80\00:06:15.29 They will rule out brain tumors or cancer 00:06:15.68\00:06:19.11 in the brain and thyroid problems, 00:06:19.14\00:06:22.00 they will rule out depression. 00:06:22.03\00:06:23.64 So, what's left is usually that give some 00:06:24.54\00:06:26.64 symptoms is Alzheimer's disease. 00:06:26.67\00:06:28.34 There are also some tests a doctor will 00:06:29.24\00:06:32.08 administer to a person such as a person who 00:06:32.11\00:06:34.80 has Alzheimer's disease cannot draw a clock 00:06:34.83\00:06:39.16 and put the numbers inside the clock because 00:06:39.19\00:06:42.44 again the visual perception, 00:06:42.47\00:06:44.31 so they can't do that. 00:06:44.34\00:06:45.71 Counting backwards from 100 by 7, 00:06:46.19\00:06:50.79 okay they have a difficult time doing that. 00:06:50.82\00:06:53.39 Some people have difficult time doing 00:06:53.42\00:06:55.13 that already, but anyway and or counting 00:06:55.16\00:06:57.56 the word world backwards, alright. 00:06:57.59\00:07:02.73 They can't really have a problem doing that 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.07 as well and if you put may be a piece of 00:07:05.10\00:07:08.69 string and a coin in a person's hand 00:07:08.72\00:07:12.17 they can't tell which one is the string 00:07:12.20\00:07:14.40 and which one is the coin. 00:07:14.43\00:07:15.80 Again that visual perception this is 00:07:15.83\00:07:17.93 the brain dealing with the frontal lobe or the 00:07:17.96\00:07:20.95 hippocampus dealing with memory 00:07:20.98\00:07:22.42 and visual perception. 00:07:22.45\00:07:23.82 So have a hard time getting off the exit 00:07:23.95\00:07:25.97 or the interstate, reading signs, so these 00:07:26.00\00:07:28.90 are some of things that are hallmarks as far as 00:07:28.93\00:07:32.12 diagnosing Alzheimer's disease patient. 00:07:32.15\00:07:34.80 Again this about 90 percent because it 00:07:35.08\00:07:37.44 cannot be conclusive until an autopsy is 00:07:37.47\00:07:40.30 done, taking some brain tissue and then look at 00:07:40.33\00:07:42.89 those brain cells, but until the person does 00:07:42.92\00:07:45.28 though he passes on then they can tell with a 00:07:45.31\00:07:49.38 certain degree of certainty that 00:07:49.41\00:07:51.48 person has Alzheimer's disease. 00:07:51.51\00:07:52.88 So, there is a battery of tests then is what you're saying, 00:07:53.05\00:07:55.12 exactly. And I guess a person... I am just 00:07:55.15\00:07:59.22 thinking to myself you know what would make 00:07:59.25\00:08:01.68 me to think to even go to a doctor. 00:08:01.71\00:08:03.83 I mean is there any kind of pain 00:08:03.86\00:08:05.34 or anything that goes along with that? 00:08:05.37\00:08:06.74 See there is no pain, that's where the 00:08:06.77\00:08:10.32 person's family members, alright. When they start 00:08:10.35\00:08:13.22 start noticing some changes as I just 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.16 mentioned, okay, outbursts, depression, 00:08:15.19\00:08:18.68 they are not themselves. 00:08:19.42\00:08:20.79 This is a change of personality, so the 00:08:20.82\00:08:24.52 person is not themselves, so therefore 00:08:24.55\00:08:27.31 the family member is usually the first one that 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.96 would detect something is going on with 00:08:29.99\00:08:32.17 my husband, mother or whatever the case maybe 00:08:32.32\00:08:34.31 because the person doesn't know it. 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.43 But the family member may pick up on it first 00:08:36.46\00:08:39.35 because it's not of their normal habitat and 00:08:39.38\00:08:42.68 that's where the doctor needs to go in and 00:08:42.71\00:08:45.35 check out... like I said before they would need 00:08:45.38\00:08:47.64 to eliminate certain things because certain 00:08:47.67\00:08:49.77 conditions can also mimic Alzheimer's disease, 00:08:49.80\00:08:52.85 so they rule out stroke, depression, 00:08:52.88\00:08:54.69 thyroid and deficiency in B12. 00:08:54.72\00:08:56.73 What would be the causes then of it? 00:08:57.19\00:08:58.64 Well let's go with the stats first and then I 00:08:59.36\00:09:01.44 would go with the causes. Going to stats, 00:09:01.47\00:09:02.84 now the stats are not good folks, about maybe 00:09:02.87\00:09:07.27 65 to 75 years of age about 3 percent of 00:09:07.30\00:09:10.96 of people have Alzheimer's disease. 00:09:10.99\00:09:12.48 So, starts around 65 years of age okay, 00:09:13.10\00:09:15.15 now from 75 to 85 it jumps up 00:09:15.18\00:09:18.64 to about 20 percent. 00:09:18.67\00:09:20.04 Now folks over 85 years of age it can be up to 00:09:20.57\00:09:25.70 one half of people have Alzheimer's disease, 00:09:25.73\00:09:29.86 one half. Over 85 years of age from one third 00:09:29.89\00:09:33.49 to one half, so and that's not good and now 00:09:33.52\00:09:36.06 again every seven seconds, okay, someone 00:09:36.09\00:09:38.81 turns 50 which means that those individuals 00:09:38.84\00:09:42.32 parents are now in their 70's, right, 00:09:42.35\00:09:45.04 right. That's why and people living longer, yes 00:09:45.07\00:09:47.07 so go of course right now there are about four 00:09:47.27\00:09:49.55 million people have Alzheimer's. 00:09:49.58\00:09:50.95 At that rate when people are growing 00:09:51.22\00:09:53.64 older by 50 years there will be 00:09:53.67\00:09:56.17 quadruple 14 million. 00:09:56.20\00:09:59.50 Now hopefully by that time it would be 00:09:59.53\00:10:01.76 New Jerusalem, but as the rate goes according 00:10:01.79\00:10:04.84 to plan it's not looking good at all. And so and 00:10:04.87\00:10:08.27 once person has been diagnosed with 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.60 Alzheimer's disease they have about 8 to 20 years 00:10:10.63\00:10:13.27 of life left. They usually die within 8 to 00:10:13.30\00:10:16.31 20 years, so again you know 100,000 people 00:10:16.34\00:10:20.73 no, 10,000, no 1000 people are diagnosed 00:10:20.76\00:10:23.41 with Alzheimer's disease every single day, 00:10:23.44\00:10:26.77 1000 people and the numbers are not getting 00:10:27.63\00:10:31.14 any better. So, unless the family actually 00:10:31.17\00:10:33.26 recognizes a difference or a change in their 00:10:33.29\00:10:36.19 parent or grandparent whoever is in the 00:10:36.22\00:10:38.48 household, then basically and have the... 00:10:38.51\00:10:41.31 then see to go have the test done. 00:10:41.34\00:10:43.04 So this is kind of one of those, 00:10:43.09\00:10:44.46 what do I usually use that word, 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.18 not known or invisible kind of things that can 00:10:47.21\00:10:51.36 happen as far as since there is no symptoms. 00:10:51.39\00:10:54.51 Well it grows progressively worse, 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.97 alright, so you will notice a change in a 00:10:58.00\00:11:00.05 person's character and personality, memory 00:11:00.08\00:11:03.61 things and how to turn on the oven, 00:11:03.64\00:11:06.61 how to turn on a microwave, 00:11:07.41\00:11:08.83 how to brush their teeth, comb their hair. 00:11:08.86\00:11:12.75 These changes would be first mark, or just not 00:11:13.39\00:11:16.92 being able to memorize or remember something 00:11:16.95\00:11:20.36 that just spoken to them, 00:11:20.39\00:11:22.09 let say 10 minutes ago. 00:11:22.12\00:11:23.49 You will cite to them a paragraph, okay. 00:11:23.52\00:11:26.70 And then ask them to recite as much 00:11:26.73\00:11:28.78 as they can remember 00:11:28.81\00:11:30.18 things in that paragraph. 00:11:30.21\00:11:31.71 A person who has Alzheimer's disease 00:11:31.74\00:11:33.59 cannot do that, or do it at a very 00:11:33.62\00:11:36.25 low state of, far reciting whatever you 00:11:36.28\00:11:39.31 said in that paragraph. 00:11:39.34\00:11:40.71 So what will be the causes then? 00:11:41.54\00:11:42.91 Okay, the causes for Alzheimer's now 00:11:42.94\00:11:44.78 of course that can be a program within itself 00:11:44.81\00:11:46.27 and its not conclusive as far as aluminum is 00:11:46.30\00:11:49.16 concerned, so let's just set that to rest. 00:11:49.19\00:11:50.92 It is true though those who have Alzheimer's 00:11:51.36\00:11:53.57 disease once the autopsy is done there is a high 00:11:53.60\00:11:56.21 amount of aluminum in the brain but they are 00:11:56.24\00:11:58.76 not sure whether or not aluminum cause 00:11:58.79\00:12:00.53 Alzheimer's or because has Alzheimer's that it 00:12:00.56\00:12:03.90 will retain aluminum, so it's not conclusive. 00:12:03.93\00:12:06.41 But there is one common thread that Alzheimer's 00:12:06.88\00:12:09.97 disease patients do have and when they do the 00:12:10.00\00:12:13.10 autopsy or those who are even alive they will 00:12:13.13\00:12:16.69 have a high degree of homocysteines 00:12:16.72\00:12:19.83 that would be in their blood. 00:12:19.86\00:12:22.12 This is conclusive across the board and you 00:12:22.15\00:12:26.54 just type, do at Medline Research just type in 00:12:26.57\00:12:28.96 Alzheimer's, type in homocysteines you get 00:12:28.99\00:12:31.49 a ray of clinical studies in medical 00:12:31.52\00:12:34.21 journals about homocysteines in blood. 00:12:34.24\00:12:37.11 Now there are two ways of increasing 00:12:37.27\00:12:40.13 homocysteines in our blood stream, okay. 00:12:40.16\00:12:42.21 Number one is what we eat, there is an 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.69 essential amino acid called methionine. 00:12:45.72\00:12:49.20 Now this comes from animal products and 00:12:50.40\00:12:52.59 comes from plant based products. 00:12:52.62\00:12:53.99 Animal products have a high degree of 00:12:54.02\00:12:56.13 methionine when we take in these foods 00:12:56.16\00:12:58.80 methionine converse into homocysteines. 00:12:58.83\00:13:02.88 Now the foods that are high in 00:13:03.96\00:13:05.33 methionine is chicken, cheese particularly 00:13:05.36\00:13:10.33 Swiss and Parmesan, milk has twice as much 00:13:10.36\00:13:15.14 as methionine than soymilk, 00:13:15.17\00:13:17.10 so again these foods are when going to the 00:13:17.58\00:13:20.35 system convert into homocysteines 00:13:20.38\00:13:22.58 and this is the trademark of all 00:13:22.61\00:13:23.98 Alzheimer's disease patients. 00:13:24.01\00:13:25.71 Then of course you have high homocysteines 00:13:26.35\00:13:28.00 level. Another way of having high 00:13:28.03\00:13:30.07 homocysteines level is of course not eating 00:13:30.10\00:13:32.36 enough of the folate foods. 00:13:32.39\00:13:34.57 It's not so much what you eat but 00:13:35.03\00:13:36.89 what you're not eating as well. 00:13:36.92\00:13:38.29 Again the folate foods will bring down 00:13:38.92\00:13:40.69 homocysteines and of course you get 00:13:40.72\00:13:42.55 those in dark leafy green vegetables and 00:13:42.58\00:13:44.55 also legumes, so and of course cigarette smoke 00:13:44.58\00:13:48.10 or caffeine and alcohol will also increase your 00:13:48.13\00:13:50.62 homocysteine levels.
