Okay. 00:01:07.55\00:01:08.85 Now you are talking about Alzheimer's, 00:01:08.88\00:01:09.94 we talked about the causes, talked about the overview. 00:01:09.97\00:01:13.47 Now we're gonna be talking about the treatment, 00:01:13.50\00:01:15.41 some things that we can do 00:01:15.44\00:01:16.51 that will enhance cognitive development. 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.37 Well, I know that people are really wanting to hear 00:01:19.40\00:01:22.03 what that would possibly be also 00:01:22.06\00:01:23.44 because that was-- that overview 00:01:23.47\00:01:25.58 you're talking about what really went down 00:01:25.61\00:01:27.86 about our conference that we had on Alzheimer's, 00:01:27.89\00:01:30.04 all the people who came and then it turned around 00:01:30.07\00:01:32.17 and get into the different drugs 00:01:32.20\00:01:33.78 that could possibly cause them 00:01:33.81\00:01:35.04 serious problems for an individual. 00:01:35.07\00:01:37.89 And now I know everybody is saying so tell me for real, 00:01:37.92\00:01:41.73 what are some of the treatments? 00:01:41.76\00:01:43.24 Yeah. 00:01:43.27\00:01:44.30 Well, you know, and we are talking about Alzheimer's, 00:01:44.33\00:01:46.06 now the list I mentioned before that 00:01:46.09\00:01:48.12 we're not just talking about Alzheimer's but also dementia. 00:01:48.15\00:01:51.48 Alzheimer's about 70 percent of dementia. 00:01:51.51\00:01:55.00 And so because you also have vascular dementia as well, 00:01:55.03\00:01:58.71 TIA strokes or brain injuries and depression, low thyroid 00:01:58.74\00:02:03.84 so all those things can cause cognitive impairment. 00:02:03.87\00:02:08.80 But there's lot of drugs out there 00:02:08.83\00:02:10.14 that is used for Alzheimer's disease. 00:02:10.17\00:02:12.99 Three in particular probably most well known 00:02:13.02\00:02:15.97 is Aricept and that's out there. 00:02:16.00\00:02:20.02 You have Exelon that's the patch. 00:02:20.05\00:02:23.05 You have Namenda. 00:02:23.08\00:02:25.05 Namenda is the one 00:02:25.08\00:02:26.11 that is not as efficacious as the other two. 00:02:26.14\00:02:29.04 As matter of fact, I just realized last-- 00:02:29.07\00:02:31.52 I think last month at the date of this taping 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.20 that the Alzheimer's Association representative 00:02:34.23\00:02:36.81 told me that they have taken it off the shelf, 00:02:36.84\00:02:39.48 it's just really not that effective. 00:02:39.51\00:02:42.07 But with those drugs for Alzheimer's 00:02:42.10\00:02:44.47 it can cause leg cramps, it can cause arrhythmias, 00:02:44.50\00:02:48.24 it can cause-- it raises your heart-- blood pressure 00:02:48.27\00:02:51.23 and also can cause depression and delusions. 00:02:51.26\00:02:54.79 So those are the drugs that's used for Alzheimer's 00:02:54.82\00:02:57.34 that's out there right now, 00:02:57.37\00:02:58.45 so really, it's not really efficacious 00:02:58.48\00:03:02.43 as far as reversing a situation. 00:03:02.46\00:03:06.50 It kind of slows it down just a little bit 00:03:06.53\00:03:08.51 but then with that 00:03:08.54\00:03:10.08 you have the side effects of those drugs too. 00:03:10.11\00:03:13.31 So there's a lot of research need to be done 00:03:13.34\00:03:16.46 for as what can be done to increase medication. 00:03:16.49\00:03:21.42 We're gonna be talking about some of that in this program 00:03:21.45\00:03:23.28 so-- and let me say this upfront, 00:03:23.31\00:03:25.36 of course you want to get pen and a paper 00:03:25.39\00:03:28.39 because we are gonna throw out some things 00:03:28.42\00:03:29.98 that will enhance cognitive health impairment, 00:03:30.01\00:03:33.82 increase our cognition, increase your memory 00:03:33.85\00:03:37.60 and executive function, all those kind of things. 00:03:37.63\00:03:40.70 So we will be mentioning about some things 00:03:40.73\00:03:42.10 for the next 15-20 minutes. 00:03:42.13\00:03:44.59 Well, I know that you are talking about 00:03:44.62\00:03:46.18 now the treatment part. 00:03:46.21\00:03:47.62 So I know that someone is asking that question. 00:03:47.65\00:03:49.60 If we are talking about treatment, 00:03:49.63\00:03:51.55 then what are some of the lifestyle intervenes 00:03:51.58\00:03:54.50 'cause we've already talked about the drug situation. 00:03:54.53\00:03:57.00 So what are some positive lifestyle interventions 00:03:57.03\00:04:00.02 that can be used? 00:04:00.05\00:04:01.98 The first one I like to title this, use your head. 00:04:02.01\00:04:06.97 Now what I mean by that 00:04:07.00\00:04:08.23 of course is mental stimulation. 00:04:08.26\00:04:10.78 Now when I say that most people will think of, 00:04:10.81\00:04:12.79 oh, yeah, I've heard about it. 00:04:12.82\00:04:14.01 If you do crossword puzzles, well, now that's true. 00:04:14.04\00:04:19.65 But one thing we need to know about doing crossword puzzles, 00:04:19.68\00:04:22.54 if you keep doing crossword puzzles over and over again 00:04:22.57\00:04:25.83 then what's happen is that you just simply going 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.89 over to already pathways in the brain, 00:04:27.92\00:04:31.22 that's been already established. 00:04:31.25\00:04:33.54 So what's emphasizes not just doing crossword puzzles, 00:04:33.57\00:04:37.31 the Mayo Clinic points this out, 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.97 new mental stimulation creates new brain nerves. 00:04:40.00\00:04:47.48 Let me say it again. 00:04:47.51\00:04:49.26 New mental stimulation creates new brain nerves. 00:04:49.29\00:04:55.83 In that way they will start-- new brain cells 00:04:55.86\00:04:58.30 start fighting with one another 00:04:58.33\00:05:00.24 and it keeps the switch on in our brains. 00:05:00.27\00:05:04.35 So not just doing the same thing over and over again 00:05:04.38\00:05:07.54 but new things-- learning a new language, 00:05:07.57\00:05:11.19 something new than just doing 00:05:11.22\00:05:12.81 the same thing over and over again 00:05:12.84\00:05:14.11 because you're just going over the same pathways 00:05:14.14\00:05:17.56 that's been trailed in our brains. 00:05:17.59\00:05:19.84 So new stimulation, now we do some things to- - 00:05:19.87\00:05:22.10 So, okay, so what you are saying 00:05:22.13\00:05:23.97 is that we got to challenge the brain. 00:05:24.00\00:05:26.34 Make it do something different from what it is used to. 00:05:26.37\00:05:28.72 Okay, so let me just say this. Okay. 00:06:47.30\00:06:49.90 That's not the right answer you are looking for. 00:06:49.93\00:06:53.02 Now surely you know that when Curtis says 00:06:53.05\00:06:56.21 he let me win, that doesn't happen. 00:06:56.24\00:07:00.14 Anyway Curtis, what about walking? 00:07:00.17\00:07:03.17 Well, walking also-- of course now let me say this again. 00:07:03.20\00:07:08.59 Let's first go to the screen. 00:07:08.62\00:07:11.56 We are going to explain what you see on the screen 00:07:11.59\00:07:13.29 and then we are gonna talk about walking. 00:07:13.32\00:07:14.99 How it can increase cognitive development. 00:07:15.02\00:07:17.23 You see here, now on the left side 00:07:17.26\00:07:19.46 this is a brain. 00:07:19.49\00:07:21.22 In our brain of course you have blood vessels. 00:07:21.25\00:07:23.90 Now executive function is needed 00:07:23.93\00:07:28.24 to do several things, learning, 00:07:28.27\00:07:30.66 balance a check book, and making decisions. 00:07:30.69\00:07:33.64 To do that we need blood flow. 00:07:33.67\00:07:37.07 When we begin to walk or engage 00:07:37.10\00:07:39.64 in any type of physical activity 00:07:39.67\00:07:42.79 that will increase blood flow into the brain 00:07:42.82\00:07:46.54 which will increase executive function 00:07:46.57\00:07:49.10 which is learning, reading, writing, problem solving. 00:07:49.13\00:07:52.99 So see at the brain that's on the right. 00:07:53.02\00:07:55.08 So therefore when we walk, 00:07:55.11\00:07:57.60 when we engage in any type of physical activity, 00:07:57.63\00:08:01.08 it increases the blood flow, 00:08:01.11\00:08:03.57 the blood flow goes into the brain 00:08:03.60\00:08:05.31 and helps to improve executive function. 00:08:05.34\00:08:09.26 So therefore that's why walking will enhance 00:08:09.29\00:08:13.26 cognitive development, walking. 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.20 And we suggest walking in open air, 00:08:16.23\00:08:19.83 brisk walking would be good. 00:08:19.86\00:08:22.39 Some people jog and of course there's a story about that 00:08:22.42\00:08:25.18 but we may not have time to talk about that. 00:08:25.21\00:08:27.63 But again walking, brisk walking in open air, 00:08:27.66\00:08:30.91 any type of physical activity 00:08:30.94\00:08:32.73 will increase their blood flow in the brain, 00:08:32.76\00:08:34.62 then we can increase our executive function. 00:08:34.65\00:08:37.02 Now, of course we're talking about Alzheimer's 00:08:37.05\00:08:38.20 and you're talking about, 00:08:38.23\00:08:39.26 you know, the caregiver and the individual 00:08:39.29\00:08:41.13 that might be experiencing Alzheimer's. 00:08:41.16\00:08:43.08 You know, you might not start off with the brisk walking 00:08:43.11\00:08:45.01 but the bottom line is just to go out and walk. 00:08:45.04\00:08:47.31 And then as you continue to walk, 00:08:47.34\00:08:48.81 you can actually increase the pace 00:08:48.84\00:08:50.43 and that will do really good. 00:08:50.46\00:08:51.74 But somebody also I remember at the conference 00:08:51.77\00:08:53.41 someone talked about the importance of water as well. 00:08:53.44\00:08:56.06 So what about water? How important is that? 00:08:56.09\00:08:58.54 Okay, now water-- 00:08:58.57\00:08:59.99 now we're talking about dementia, Alzheimer's diseases. 00:09:00.02\00:09:03.25 A lot of people think 00:09:03.28\00:09:04.42 well, I'm looking for some type of special herb or drug 00:09:04.45\00:09:09.09 and these are just simple lifestyle things 00:09:09.12\00:09:11.46 that we can do. 00:09:11.49\00:09:12.77 Sometimes we overlook the most obvious. 00:09:12.80\00:09:14.61 I mean, walking, we miss by going to sleep 00:09:14.64\00:09:19.09 or going to bed last program. 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.09 Yeah. And so water. 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.94 This is study done, 00:09:22.97\00:09:24.04 it was published in a Medical Journal, 00:09:24.07\00:09:26.53 this was study done 00:09:26.56\00:09:27.91 at the Martins Care Home in England 00:09:27.94\00:09:32.22 where this new nurse 00:09:32.25\00:09:34.15 who is over charge of this Martins Care Home, 00:09:34.18\00:09:37.93 she decided to engage all the people 00:09:37.96\00:09:40.83 in this care home, the seniors a water club. 00:09:40.86\00:09:45.12 And this was what she did, head nurse. 00:09:45.15\00:09:47.46 What she did is she installed water receptacles 00:09:47.49\00:09:52.74 throughout the care home number one 00:09:52.77\00:09:54.98 and also placed water containers 00:09:55.01\00:09:57.57 inside everyone's room at this care home. 00:09:57.60\00:10:01.19 And they were requested or encouraged to drink 00:10:01.22\00:10:04.28 at least six cups of water a day. 00:10:04.31\00:10:08.59 Over the six months the results were amazing. 00:10:08.62\00:10:12.46 She says, I got several courses of what nurse says. 00:10:12.49\00:10:14.90 She says, the whole home just buzzes now. 00:10:14.93\00:10:18.96 They had less call-ins or call-outs, less falls, 00:10:18.99\00:10:25.32 they had people who have a better mood, 00:10:25.35\00:10:28.50 a better personality, they didn't have people 00:10:28.53\00:10:31.35 who were wandering out as much and it was just amazing. 00:10:31.38\00:10:36.20 There was more cheerfulness throughout the whole home. 00:10:36.23\00:10:38.96 So we just simply encouraging people 00:10:38.99\00:10:41.86 who you know, healthcare professionals, 00:10:41.89\00:10:43.85 we care for our loved ones, you want to make sure 00:10:43.88\00:10:45.96 that they get adequate amount of water. 00:10:45.99\00:10:49.36 The reason being is number one, the brain is 80 percent water. 00:10:49.39\00:10:56.40 Yes. The brain. 00:10:56.43\00:10:57.74 So it makes seem to reason that if we have a lack of water 00:10:57.77\00:11:01.82 then the brain cannot function as properly 00:11:01.85\00:11:04.29 therefore we have problems with memory loss, etcetera. 00:11:04.32\00:11:07.66 So just a matter of just drinking 00:11:07.69\00:11:09.87 adequate amount of water, drink it up. 00:11:09.90\00:11:13.29 And you do know that drinking water 00:11:13.32\00:11:14.84 is not just affiliated of course with the Alzheimer's 00:11:14.87\00:11:17.98 but drinking water is important everyday 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.77 no matter what is going on, 00:11:20.80\00:11:21.86 because it helps to lubricate the brain, 00:11:21.89\00:11:23.39 the bones, all the system itself. 00:11:23.42\00:11:25.62 You know, we did a program once on that as well 00:11:25.65\00:11:27.63 talking about water and we showed how-- 00:11:27.66\00:11:30.03 when you don't have enough water what happens 00:11:30.06\00:11:32.03 is the blood becomes very, very thick. 00:11:32.06\00:11:34.65 And so when we showed also we showed-- 00:11:34.68\00:11:36.94 we had a vase over the head we had ketchup in it. 00:11:36.97\00:11:40.17 We showed how thick it could be, 00:11:40.20\00:11:41.28 your blood can get very thick. 00:11:41.31\00:11:42.58 And then we actually poured water in there 00:11:42.61\00:11:44.33 and we stirred it up with the straw. 00:11:44.36\00:11:45.75 So the size of the straw 00:11:45.78\00:11:46.87 the vein is very, very, very, very small, the vessels 00:11:46.90\00:11:49.74 and we showed how just by adding that water 00:11:49.77\00:11:52.43 how it lubricated and changed 00:11:52.46\00:11:53.90 the consistency of the actual ketchup. 00:11:53.93\00:11:56.26 That's what happens when we drink water. 00:11:56.29\00:11:57.38 We drink water, you know, it actually helps 00:11:57.41\00:11:59.80 to defuse itself throughout the body system 00:11:59.83\00:12:02.02 and it's really good for all parts of the body. 00:12:02.05\00:12:05.06 So I hope you are drinking your water, 00:12:05.09\00:12:06.50 not just because you think 00:12:06.53\00:12:07.75 you might have Alzheimer's or dementia 00:12:07.78\00:12:09.68 but because it's just a good thing to do. 00:12:09.71\00:12:12.30 You know, I think let's take another thing too honey, 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.58 because lot of times people taking care of their loved ones 00:12:14.61\00:12:17.13 who may have dementia or Alzheimer's 00:12:17.16\00:12:19.30 and they may not remember to get their water in. 00:12:19.33\00:12:22.64 So we have to remind them, we have to may be 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.46 put a water jug in front of them 00:12:24.49\00:12:26.09 and you know, time it 00:12:26.12\00:12:27.66 and you know, little posted notes 00:12:27.69\00:12:30.08 because we need to help our loved ones go ahead 00:12:30.11\00:12:32.81 and increase their cognitive development. 00:12:32.84\00:12:35.09 Therefore with that lack of water 00:12:35.12\00:12:37.31 is going to impact the mental and central nervous system. 00:12:37.34\00:12:40.23 Yeah.
