Sunlight exposure gives us vitamin D, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.92 so that we can build strong bones and teeth. 00:00:02.95\00:00:05.30 But does it stop there? 00:00:05.33\00:00:07.11 Is there something new? 00:00:07.14\00:00:08.49 Well, today's program is entitled 00:00:08.52\00:00:10.39 "Sunlight something new under the sun." 00:00:10.42\00:00:13.78 We'll be right back. 00:00:13.81\00:00:14.84 Hi, welcome to "Abundant Living." 00:00:40.12\00:00:41.63 This is Curtis Eakins and my co-host would be-- 00:00:41.66\00:00:45.16 Paula Eakins. 00:00:45.19\00:00:46.45 Okay, you were kind of laughing when we came 00:00:46.48\00:00:48.40 on the scene, so we got to say it together now. 00:00:48.43\00:00:51.32 I am somewhat. 00:00:51.35\00:00:52.81 You're somewhat together. Somewhat together. 00:00:52.84\00:00:54.46 Okay, can we kind of continue now. 00:00:54.49\00:00:56.20 Yes. 00:00:56.23\00:00:57.26 All right. 00:00:57.29\00:00:58.35 Something new under the sun, 00:00:58.38\00:00:59.49 that's what we're talking about today. 00:00:59.52\00:01:00.79 So we're gonna be talking again as we continue 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.99 in this whole program on talking 00:01:03.02\00:01:04.75 about the eight natural remedies. 00:01:04.78\00:01:06.64 And now we're on the sun. That's right. 00:01:06.67\00:01:08.92 Now we're talking about, this is the new series 00:01:08.95\00:01:10.61 like my wife said, a new series 00:01:10.64\00:01:12.03 and eight natural remedies. 00:01:12.06\00:01:13.58 Now, of course, some people of course, 00:01:13.61\00:01:15.67 most Seventh-day Adventist Christians. 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.71 We're here to allow these principles 00:01:17.74\00:01:19.23 which is one of the reason why we have a degree 00:01:19.26\00:01:22.15 of longer health and longevity. 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.78 But those who may not be aware of that 00:01:24.81\00:01:27.34 eight natural remedies, let's so walk them thought that, 00:01:27.37\00:01:30.21 where are they and how can a person 00:01:30.24\00:01:33.44 remember those eight natural remedies. 00:01:33.47\00:01:37.18 Well, once again those who are just tuning in, 00:01:37.21\00:01:40.21 know that we're gonna be talking about 00:01:40.24\00:01:41.88 this acronym 'NEWSTART.' 00:01:41.91\00:01:43.24 And those who have been following along with us. 00:01:43.27\00:01:45.82 By this time you really should be able at least to 00:01:45.85\00:01:48.34 some of them, you know, what I'm saying. 00:01:48.37\00:01:50.12 But anyway the word is 'NEWSTART.' 00:01:50.15\00:01:52.34 'N' stands for nutrition, 'E' stands for exercise, 00:01:52.37\00:01:57.12 'W' stands for water, 'T' temperance, 'A' air, 00:01:57.15\00:02:03.77 'R' rest and 'T' trust in divine guidance. 00:02:03.80\00:02:09.91 Now this was coined by a gentleman that was 00:02:09.94\00:02:12.64 at the one of our lifestyle centers 00:02:12.67\00:02:15.55 that people go to and he had a time trying 00:02:15.58\00:02:18.14 to remember this eight natural remedies 00:02:18.17\00:02:19.50 or I say eight natural laws 00:02:19.53\00:02:20.83 or eight natural principles or eight natural doctors. 00:02:20.86\00:02:23.72 So everybody has a different kind of swing on it, 00:02:23.75\00:02:25.89 you know, but anyway he got the word 'NEWSTART.' 00:02:25.92\00:02:29.40 Okay. 00:02:29.43\00:02:30.46 And one of things I think is important here 00:02:30.49\00:02:31.97 and that is that word trust in divine guidance, 00:02:32.00\00:02:34.54 actually trust in divine guidance. 00:02:34.57\00:02:36.66 Anything we're gonna do, we definitely have to 00:02:36.69\00:02:39.63 trust in divine guidance and ask God to help us so. 00:02:39.66\00:02:42.93 I would like to put up the other end 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.36 but then it won't spell 'NEWSTART' 00:02:44.39\00:02:45.50 and so with that in mind understanding 00:02:45.53\00:02:47.71 that the whole thing about trust in divine guidance 00:02:47.74\00:02:50.33 makes everything possible. 00:02:50.36\00:02:52.35 That's right. 00:02:52.38\00:02:53.47 And again Ellen White, one of the cofounders 00:02:53.50\00:02:56.97 of the Seventh-day Adventist church mentions 00:02:57.00\00:02:59.45 those eight principles in a book 00:02:59.48\00:03:01.35 called Counsels on Health, 00:03:01.38\00:03:03.45 page 90. 00:03:03.48\00:03:04.51 This basically where that 'NEWSTART' came from. 00:03:04.54\00:03:06.99 This is a quote. 00:03:07.02\00:03:08.15 She says proper diet, exercise, use of water, 00:03:08.18\00:03:15.10 sunlight, temperance, air, trust in divine power, 00:03:15.13\00:03:19.18 these are the true remedies. 00:03:19.21\00:03:22.40 So from that came up with the 'NEWSTART' philosophy 00:03:22.43\00:03:26.44 that we have embraced and want to share 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.00 that with you as well. 00:03:28.03\00:03:29.33 So today we're talking about sunlight, go ahead. 00:03:29.36\00:03:31.58 You know, we've been talking also about 00:03:31.61\00:03:33.29 our references and a reference you just mentioned, 00:03:33.32\00:03:35.27 number one you talk about Ellen G. White 00:03:35.30\00:03:38.05 and we're gonna be talk about her. 00:03:38.08\00:03:39.58 The Counsels on Health is a good book 00:03:39.61\00:03:40.73 and the other one I like is Ministry of Healing as well. 00:03:40.76\00:03:42.72 That she actually discusses 00:03:42.75\00:03:44.10 the eight natural remedies and then of course, 00:03:44.13\00:03:46.21 our major reference major, major reference 00:03:46.24\00:03:49.38 is God Himself, the Word of God, 00:03:49.41\00:03:51.93 the Creator God, that's were all this information 00:03:51.96\00:03:54.40 is actually coming from as well. 00:03:54.43\00:03:55.97 Yes, so we gonna start with God's Word 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.53 as far as that, that is God's Word 00:03:58.56\00:04:00.18 had to say about sunlight. 00:04:00.21\00:04:02.67 So again, if you've been with us 00:04:02.70\00:04:04.36 for the last few weeks hopefully you have 00:04:04.39\00:04:06.47 your Bibles handy and we're gonna go to 00:04:06.50\00:04:08.40 the Word of God to set the stage 00:04:08.43\00:04:10.21 as far as this topic, 00:04:10.24\00:04:11.94 something new under the sun, 00:04:11.97\00:04:13.39 there is something new under the sun. 00:04:13.42\00:04:14.90 We're gonna look at the Book 00:04:14.93\00:04:15.97 of Genesis 1 and we're gonna start with verse 16. 00:04:16.00\00:04:21.18 "Genesis 1:16, the Bible says "And God made 00:04:21.21\00:04:25.71 two great lights, the greater light to rule the day 00:04:25.74\00:04:31.70 and the lesser light to rule the night, 00:04:31.73\00:04:33.74 He made the stars also." 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.78 Going down to verse 18. 00:04:35.81\00:04:37.70 "And God saw that it was good." 00:04:37.73\00:04:41.69 So now the greater light of course referring 00:04:41.72\00:04:43.71 to the sun, that's the greater light. 00:04:43.74\00:04:46.57 Now how good is it? 00:04:46.60\00:04:48.28 Well, the wise man talks about how good it is 00:04:48.31\00:04:50.90 and he as the reference as far as 00:04:50.93\00:04:52.83 what we can receive from the sun. 00:04:52.86\00:04:55.36 Now these next two texts are easy to remember. 00:04:55.39\00:04:59.18 One is Ecclesiastes 7:11, the other one is 00:04:59.21\00:05:05.17 Ecclesiastes 11:7, so one is 7:11. 00:05:05.20\00:05:09.41 Okay, okay. 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.47 The other one is 11:7. 00:05:10.50\00:05:11.77 We're gonna read the 7:11 first, 00:05:11.80\00:05:13.98 then read the 11:7 next. Okay. 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.98 Both texts talks about the sun, 00:05:16.01\00:05:17.94 both texts are very profound. 00:05:17.97\00:05:21.00 Chapter 7:11, the last part "There is profit to 00:05:21.03\00:05:27.37 them that see the sun"-- 00:05:27.40\00:05:31.54 So therefore when we see the sun we have to look 00:05:31.57\00:05:33.67 directly into the sun but when the sun is out, 00:05:33.70\00:05:36.41 the sunrays is out, we receive the wise man say profit, 00:05:36.44\00:05:41.87 when the sunlight is shining in the heavens, 00:05:41.90\00:05:44.10 there is profit. 00:05:44.13\00:05:45.31 Now that's Ecclesiastes 7:11. 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.90 Let's turn to Ecclesiastes 11:7, all right. 00:05:47.93\00:05:53.71 Listen to these words 00:05:53.74\00:05:55.91 "Truly the light is." What honey? 00:05:55.94\00:05:59.65 "Sweet and a pleasant thing for the eyes 00:05:59.68\00:06:04.26 to behold the sun." 00:06:04.29\00:06:07.66 So both two texts are talking about the sun 00:06:07.69\00:06:10.18 SUN. Yeah. 00:06:10.21\00:06:11.71 And both two texts are talking about 00:06:11.74\00:06:13.59 how is the pleasant thing is profitable for the sun 00:06:13.62\00:06:17.61 to shine for the eyes to see the sun. 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.77 So those two texts tells us 00:06:19.80\00:06:21.88 about the power of benefits of the sunlight 00:06:21.91\00:06:24.97 when the eyes see the sun over 00:06:25.00\00:06:26.32 when sun in shining in the heavens. 00:06:26.35\00:06:28.95 We're gonna-- you have a lot to talk 00:06:28.98\00:06:30.14 about the sun and immunity system, you know. 00:06:30.17\00:06:33.00 How does the actual sun help 00:06:33.03\00:06:35.77 with the immune system? 00:06:35.80\00:06:37.81 Okay, now it does a whole lot about 00:06:37.84\00:06:39.39 the immune system, let me first before we do that. 00:06:39.42\00:06:42.00 Let me expound on this text here, 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.18 these two texts as well. 00:06:45.21\00:06:47.14 You know, there is a hormone called melatonin. 00:06:47.17\00:06:50.34 Right. 00:06:50.37\00:06:51.51 It's very a powerful hormone 00:06:51.54\00:06:53.08 and it's produced by a small gland 00:06:53.11\00:06:55.81 call the pineal gland, 00:06:55.84\00:06:57.97 it deep into the base of the brain, all right, 00:06:58.00\00:07:00.49 very small pineal pine, shape like a pine cone, 00:07:00.52\00:07:03.64 that's how the name got its-- gland got its name. 00:07:03.67\00:07:07.12 This gland produces melatonin, 00:07:07.15\00:07:11.21 gives us a good mood, help us to sleep. 00:07:11.24\00:07:14.10 Guess what? 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.67 When the sunlight strikes the eye, 00:07:15.70\00:07:18.26 it hits the optic nerve, goes back to 00:07:18.29\00:07:21.59 the pineal gland and this gland produces melatonin, 00:07:21.62\00:07:26.03 helps us to give the good mood and good sleep. 00:07:26.06\00:07:28.83 Sometimes this gland is call the third eye. 00:07:28.86\00:07:32.21 So therefore sunlight also produces a good mood, 00:07:32.24\00:07:35.13 that's why this song writers says, rainy days 00:07:35.16\00:07:38.43 and Mondays always get me down. 00:07:38.46\00:07:42.60 Less sunlight, so it has affect on the sun 00:07:42.63\00:07:45.08 as far as that is concerned. 00:07:45.11\00:07:46.14 Now you're talking about the immune system. 00:07:46.17\00:07:49.04 Immune system is very fortified, 00:07:49.07\00:07:52.14 it helps in to protect us from bacteria, viruses, 00:07:52.17\00:07:55.96 micros, cancer cells everyday, all right. 00:07:55.99\00:08:00.56 There are certain cells that are very powerful 00:08:00.59\00:08:02.97 in doing that, the T-cells in particular. 00:08:03.00\00:08:06.46 Let's go to the graphic and see what the T-cells 00:08:06.49\00:08:08.81 can do when sunlight has stroke the eye. 00:08:08.84\00:08:11.94 Let's go to graphic at this time. 00:08:11.97\00:08:15.50 Sunlight and Immunity ''Vitamin D increases 00:08:15.53\00:08:20.62 antimicrobial cells and activate T-cells. 00:08:20.65\00:08:27.69 Also play a role in respiratory tract infections 00:08:27.72\00:08:32.18 and treatment of asthma, sunlight." 00:08:32.38\00:08:35.85 Wow. Wow. 00:08:35.88\00:08:36.91 So now there is something new under the sun. 00:08:36.94\00:08:39.17 We're talking about respiratory tract infections. 00:08:39.20\00:08:41.39 We're talking about asthma, 00:08:41.42\00:08:42.64 we're talking about T-cells. 00:08:42.67\00:08:43.72 Now there's many types of T-cells, 00:08:43.75\00:08:45.46 you have a T helper cells, then you have the T killer cells. 00:08:45.49\00:08:50.40 Right. 00:08:50.43\00:08:51.46 These cells protect the cell on the inside. 00:08:51.49\00:08:54.66 We have the B-cells protect ourselves 00:08:54.69\00:08:56.83 from the outside. 00:08:56.86\00:08:58.30 The T-cells protect us from inside. 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.66 The T helper cells and T killer cells also 00:09:00.69\00:09:04.20 attack and destroy cancer cells. 00:09:04.23\00:09:07.78 Now we're talking about sunlight in relationship 00:09:07.81\00:09:10.89 to cancer. 00:09:10.92\00:09:13.48 Therefore those who have sunlight exposition have 00:09:13.51\00:09:15.52 a less risk of cancer of the colon, breast 00:09:15.55\00:09:19.88 and also the prostate 00:09:19.91\00:09:21.72 because those areas have we call cancer, 00:09:21.75\00:09:25.24 I mean vitamin D receptors. 00:09:25.27\00:09:27.81 So when sunlight strikes the eye, 00:09:27.84\00:09:29.88 strikes the body those gonna fortified with 00:09:29.91\00:09:32.78 these anticancer properties so therefore 00:09:32.81\00:09:35.08 you have 50% less of cancer 00:09:35.11\00:09:37.52 in those areas as well, so protect us from cancer. 00:09:37.55\00:09:40.27 So now we got that sun, not only being-- 00:09:40.30\00:09:42.76 helping with the mood, 00:09:42.79\00:09:43.82 of more positive mood kind of a thing. 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.01 Now we got also there with the ability to be able 00:09:46.04\00:09:49.09 to effectively help out with immune system 00:09:49.12\00:09:53.38 when it comes to major killer diseases such as cancer. 00:09:53.41\00:09:55.22 Right. And cancer is included, yeah. 00:09:55.25\00:09:56.93 Cancer is included. 00:09:56.96\00:09:57.99 So that's true, because closer we get 00:09:58.02\00:09:59.47 to the equator, less cancer we have in certain areas 00:09:59.50\00:10:03.49 in a population and sunlight is responsible 00:10:03.52\00:10:05.92 for that with the vitamin D. 00:10:05.95\00:10:07.73 What are the-what are the other benefits then, 00:10:07.76\00:10:09.15 what are the benefits that we also get 00:10:09.18\00:10:10.86 from that the sun as far as immune is concern? 00:10:10.89\00:10:13.23 Yeah, there has been quite a lot of benefits. 00:10:13.26\00:10:15.60 One medical journal just of late, 00:10:15.63\00:10:18.93 I will just go and say its date 2012 April issue 00:10:18.96\00:10:22.61 of the journal medical journal called Dermato-Endocrinology. 00:10:22.64\00:10:27.85 This journal lists a lot of benefits from sunlight. 00:10:27.88\00:10:31.48 Now again, hold on to your seat 00:10:31.51\00:10:33.91 because this gonna be very profound. 00:10:33.94\00:10:35.63 Number one, when sunlight strikes the skin, 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.74 number one it turns the cholesterol in the skin 00:10:37.77\00:10:40.47 to vitamin D. 00:10:40.50\00:10:42.16 So now the cholesterol in the bloodstream 00:10:42.19\00:10:44.39 replace with the cholesterol that's in the skin, 00:10:44.42\00:10:47.02 therefore the cholesterol comes down base on 00:10:47.05\00:10:49.50 sunlight exposure, that's one. 00:10:49.53\00:10:52.33 Two, sunlight also reduces glucose or blood sugar levels, 00:10:52.36\00:10:57.61 so therefore sunlight exposure 00:10:57.64\00:10:59.90 also have to monitor or normalize blood glucose 00:10:59.93\00:11:04.23 in the skin as well. 00:11:04.26\00:11:05.87 Number three, sunlight exposure, 00:11:05.90\00:11:09.21 this is independent of Vitamin D also reduced the symptoms 00:11:09.24\00:11:14.81 of clinical multiple sclerosis, 00:11:14.84\00:11:19.29 it's been very critical as far as doing that is concern. 00:11:19.32\00:11:22.49 So there is a lot of something new 00:11:22.52\00:11:24.15 under the sun as far as that is concern. 00:11:24.18\00:11:25.61 One more thing. 00:11:25.64\00:11:26.79 Sunlight also generates nitric oxide. 00:11:26.82\00:11:31.50 Now nitric oxide helps to dilate our arteries. 00:11:31.53\00:11:36.14 When arteries dilate, the blood pressure comes down. 00:11:36.17\00:11:40.95 Sunlight does that as well. 00:11:40.98\00:11:42.39 So again there is a lot of things that sunlight can do. 00:11:42.42\00:11:44.90 That just a sampling of what sunlight can do 00:11:44.93\00:11:48.18 when sunlight strikes the skin. 00:11:48.21\00:11:51.20 So we got the cholesterol. 00:11:51.23\00:11:52.96 Yeah, the cholesterol gone. 00:11:52.99\00:11:54.05 High blood pressure. We got the heart. 00:11:54.08\00:11:55.89 Heart, diabetes. 00:11:55.92\00:11:57.09 Diabetes, and we got all that going on-- 00:11:57.12\00:11:58.52 Good mood, cancer fighter. 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.01 So we're gonna keep that immune system up 00:12:01.04\00:12:03.03 and going because we needed just-I love it, I love it. 00:12:03.06\00:12:06.11 Now, you know, you hear a lot of talk about 00:12:06.14\00:12:07.91 vitamin D as it relates to the sun. 00:12:07.94\00:12:11.22 And then of course, you hear a lot of talk about, 00:12:11.25\00:12:12.73 you know, may be taking vitamin D tablets. Yes. 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.90 Well, you know, my question, 00:12:15.93\00:12:17.43 my next question is. 00:12:17.46\00:12:18.57 What's the best source of getting that Vitamin D 00:12:18.60\00:12:21.22 that we need to have? 00:12:21.25\00:12:22.39 Yeah, 'cause lot of people do take supplementation, 00:12:22.42\00:12:24.46 Vitamin D and particularly Vitamin D3, all right. 00:12:24.49\00:12:27.69 Let's go to screen and see 00:12:27.72\00:12:28.98 what is the best source of Vitamin D. 00:12:29.01\00:12:33.44 Sunshine Vitamin. 00:12:33.47\00:12:35.43 "Sunlight exposure of the skin is know to be 00:12:35.46\00:12:39.08 the most important source of vitamin D." 00:12:39.11\00:12:44.98 Well, that's on the Journal 00:12:45.01\00:12:46.34 of Internal Medicine, that's great. 00:12:46.37\00:12:47.93 That's true, yeah. You know-- 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.42 Because lot of people buying that vitamin D3 00:12:49.45\00:12:51.32 and so but sunlight God created that in heavens 00:12:51.35\00:12:54.55 and He say, it was good so must be good for that too. 00:12:54.58\00:12:57.71 Yeah, he know, he always want to make sure I mean, 00:12:57.74\00:12:59.58 you know, that we're actually getting out in 00:12:59.61\00:13:01.92 the sun because that's some of the things 00:13:01.95\00:13:03.09 that we've gotten away from, it's coming out 00:13:03.12\00:13:05.37 and we love actually walking out in nature, 00:13:05.40\00:13:07.77 going out and gain that sunlight, 00:13:07.80\00:13:09.26 sunlight, sunshine on us. 00:13:09.29\00:13:11.02 And so, let's talk for minute about the exposure 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.99 and the duration? 00:13:14.02\00:13:15.43 Okay, because lot of people may be thinking, 00:13:15.46\00:13:17.40 okay, all those things are good but Curtis, 00:13:17.43\00:13:19.78 you left out one thing, sunlight causes skin cancer, 00:13:19.81\00:13:22.51 that's what most people may be saying 00:13:22.54\00:13:24.35 but there has been some clinical studies 00:13:24.38\00:13:26.34 as of late where sunlight is really not the cause 00:13:26.37\00:13:29.68 of skin cancer, that's why you heard on 3ABN "Abundant Living." 00:13:29.71\00:13:33.19 They did to rats, they shaved 00:13:33.22\00:13:36.11 the back of the rats and expose them 00:13:36.14\00:13:37.95 to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. 00:13:37.98\00:13:40.35 The rats that had a plant-based diet 00:13:40.38\00:13:43.92 had no skin cancers, the rest that had a diet 00:13:43.95\00:13:47.59 that's high in fat and oil in grease 00:13:47.62\00:13:51.57 had 30% of cancer on the skin. 00:13:51.60\00:13:55.10 So, if the tissues have a lot of fat 00:13:55.13\00:13:58.80 or fried foods in one's diet, when sunlight strikes the skin, 00:13:58.83\00:14:03.90 it turns it cancerous. 00:14:03.93\00:14:05.75 So sunlight is not the culprit, 00:14:05.78\00:14:07.26 it's more or less the diet. 00:14:07.29\00:14:08.86 Now about exposure. 00:14:08.89\00:14:10.68 What we need about may be 10 or 15 minutes 00:14:10.71\00:14:12.68 of sunlight exposure with most of the skin expose 00:14:12.71\00:14:15.52 to get these benefits. 00:14:15.55\00:14:16.99 Now, of course, you have two types of rays. 00:14:17.02\00:14:20.11 You have to ultraviolet A rays, 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.36 you get that in the mornings and in evenings. 00:14:23.39\00:14:26.03 We have the ultraviolet B rays, 00:14:26.06\00:14:28.74 you get that between 10 and 4 o'clock high noon. 00:14:28.77\00:14:31.89 The ultraviolet B rays 10 to 4 you get the vitamin D. 00:14:31.92\00:14:36.46 The ultraviolet A rays in the mornings and evenings 00:14:36.49\00:14:39.27 you get the other benefit, so you need both rays 00:14:39.30\00:14:41.49 to have a healthy balance. Okay. 00:14:41.52\00:14:43.37 So therefore the sun exposure, now, 00:14:43.40\00:14:45.35 of course, dark skin people need a little bit more 00:14:45.38\00:14:47.52 so just myself, I need may be 20 minutes where light skin 00:14:47.55\00:14:50.89 people may need 10 or 15 minutes 00:14:50.92\00:14:53.15 and that would be working well for those individuals. 00:14:53.18\00:14:56.28 How about Ellen G.
