No, no, no the pressure's 00:01:21.68\00:01:23.39 on means that we gonna be talking about high 00:01:23.42\00:01:25.71 blood pressure. High blood pressure. 00:01:25.74\00:01:27.53 High blood pressure. Okay. Let's start. 00:01:27.56\00:01:29.79 I guess we settled that. Let me before you, 00:01:29.82\00:01:31.74 with your questions, honey, yes, this is 00:01:31.77\00:01:33.42 gonna be a series called the, 00:01:33.45\00:01:35.65 a clean heart series. Okay. Alright. 00:01:35.68\00:01:39.61 So the next few weeks we're gonna be talking about 00:01:39.64\00:01:41.51 not just heart but the cardiovascular system 00:01:41.54\00:01:43.99 in general. So but today's program is of course 00:01:44.02\00:01:47.46 high blood pressure or the medical term is 00:01:47.49\00:01:49.51 hypertension. So a clean heart series, 00:01:49.54\00:01:52.14 so you want to stay with us for the next 00:01:52.17\00:01:53.99 few weeks dealing with the cardiovascular system. 00:01:54.02\00:01:56.52 Well, moving right into the area of high blood 00:01:56.55\00:01:59.39 pressure. Let's go ahead and define 00:01:59.42\00:02:01.55 the term high blood pressure. 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.09 Okay, good question. Let me first before 00:02:04.12\00:02:08.13 we define the term high blood pressure. 00:02:08.16\00:02:09.99 Let's first talk about blood pressure, alright, 00:02:10.02\00:02:14.38 in blood pressure every time the heart beats, 00:02:14.41\00:02:16.55 blood goes through the vessels and provides organs, 00:02:16.58\00:02:21.53 glands the nutrients that these organs and glands 00:02:21.56\00:02:24.59 need on day-to-day basis, but now sometimes 00:02:24.62\00:02:28.07 that pressure against that artery wall was 00:02:28.10\00:02:30.68 very thin as some problems and that pressure 00:02:30.71\00:02:34.65 when it's high is called high blood pressure. 00:02:34.68\00:02:37.07 Okay, okay. In medical term of course is hypertension. 00:02:37.10\00:02:39.60 There are two types of high blood pressure; 00:02:39.63\00:02:41.90 one is called essential which has no real medical 00:02:41.93\00:02:45.20 reason or cause for that and the other one is 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.73 called secondary which due to maybe renal failure, 00:02:48.76\00:02:52.67 endocrine problems whatever. So, in today's program 00:02:52.70\00:02:55.37 we're gonna be zeroing in on essential high blood 00:02:55.40\00:02:57.41 pressure or hypertension. Now as far to the numbers 00:02:57.44\00:03:00.16 are concerned. Now there are three groups of numbers 00:03:00.19\00:03:03.74 that we need to look at and of course this is in 00:03:03.77\00:03:05.63 your work book as well. Number one let's look at 00:03:05.66\00:03:09.01 the normal blood pressure. Now the top number systolic 00:03:09.04\00:03:15.02 where the heart is beating that number should be 119 00:03:15.05\00:03:21.71 or less, that's the top number systolic. 00:03:21.74\00:03:25.31 What about the bottom number? 00:03:25.34\00:03:26.97 Okay, now the bottom number should be 79 00:03:27.00\00:03:30.89 or less, alright, so let's say, with top number 00:03:30.92\00:03:34.07 systolic is let's say 126 and bottom number is 78 00:03:34.10\00:03:39.07 then it's not normal, okay, both need to be below 119, 00:03:39.10\00:03:43.69 not 119 or lower 79 and lower top and bottom. 00:03:43.72\00:03:47.02 Now the next phase of the system of high blood 00:03:47.05\00:03:52.13 pressure is pre-hypertension, 00:03:52.16\00:03:54.83 alright, the top number is either 120 to 139 00:03:54.86\00:04:01.49 and the bottom number is 80 to 89. 00:04:01.52\00:04:07.24 So now therefore if the top number is normal 00:04:07.27\00:04:12.13 but the bottom number is abnormal then the 00:04:12.16\00:04:14.70 person is still pre-hypertension, 00:04:14.73\00:04:17.02 alright, still have pre-hypertension, 00:04:17.05\00:04:19.10 alright. Now stage one is 140 to 159 00:04:19.13\00:04:25.00 and 90 to 99. And this also in your work book 00:04:25.03\00:04:29.67 as well because we all way down to stage four. 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.92 Normally those who are in the pre-hypertension 00:04:31.95\00:04:35.31 of phase that's about 30 percent of the population. 00:04:35.34\00:04:39.43 We're talking about 60 million people. 00:04:39.46\00:04:41.47 Those who are on stage one said to be 00:04:41.50\00:04:43.85 "hypertension" it's another 30 percent 00:04:43.88\00:04:47.33 which another said to be 60 million people as well. 00:04:47.36\00:04:49.94 So therefore, with that in mind look at those 00:04:49.97\00:04:52.22 two stages together. The pre-hypertension 00:04:52.25\00:04:55.24 and stage one, look at about a 120 million people, 00:04:55.27\00:05:00.41 that's why it's the nation's number one 00:05:00.44\00:05:02.70 reason for drug prescription, alright, 00:05:02.73\00:05:05.44 and it will go down like I said before to stage 00:05:05.47\00:05:08.22 four and of course it can be very damaging 00:05:08.25\00:05:10.90 to the system. People often say, 00:05:10.93\00:05:13.98 I don't know when to take my pressure, 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.96 okay, whether morning, afternoon, when I go to 00:05:15.99\00:05:19.21 the doctor, what is the tip on how to take your 00:05:19.24\00:05:22.67 blood pressure, or when to take it? 00:05:22.70\00:05:24.42 Oh! When to take it, yeah. 00:05:24.45\00:05:25.82 Well, you know we've been to a lot of health fairs 00:05:25.85\00:05:27.22 and we've been to a lot of health fairs 00:05:27.25\00:05:28.62 and sometimes folks health fairs may not be the best 00:05:28.65\00:05:31.32 place to take your blood pressure. 00:05:31.35\00:05:32.87 I mean you're walking around eating all kinds of 00:05:32.90\00:05:35.21 foods and drinks and cokes and whatever I mean 00:05:35.24\00:05:37.59 take a blood pressure and almost as you say have 00:05:37.62\00:05:39.83 a heart attack looking at your numbers, alright, 00:05:39.86\00:05:41.66 So, that may be not be an accurate thing to do, 00:05:41.69\00:05:43.73 but a lot of people are not taking the blood pressure 00:05:43.76\00:05:45.92 at home. If you do that it's very easy to do 00:05:45.95\00:05:48.72 but there are certain thing that we need 00:05:48.75\00:05:50.70 to be mindful of while we do take our blood 00:05:50.73\00:05:52.55 pressure. Number one, you need to have the 00:05:52.58\00:05:56.05 right cuff, if the cuff is too small you have a 00:05:56.08\00:06:00.09 false high number. If the cuff is too large you have 00:06:00.12\00:06:03.81 a false low number. In cold temperatures, 00:06:03.84\00:06:07.43 if the body is cold, coming from the cold whatever 00:06:07.46\00:06:09.52 take your blood pressure it's gonna be a false 00:06:09.55\00:06:11.33 low number. Also you need to have your feet 00:06:11.36\00:06:15.28 flat on the ground, do not cross your legs, 00:06:15.31\00:06:18.13 no talking, turn off the radio, turn off the TV 00:06:18.16\00:06:23.53 and be quiet for at least 5 minutes. 00:06:23.56\00:06:27.02 A lot of times people really don't do all of these. 00:06:27.05\00:06:30.04 Right, right, so you may have some false positives 00:06:30.07\00:06:32.30 and false negatives in doing all of this as well, 00:06:32.33\00:06:34.57 and so with that in mind. And now America Heart 00:06:34.60\00:06:37.64 Association they suggest this. 00:06:37.67\00:06:39.83 Take your blood pressure standing up two times 00:06:39.86\00:06:43.97 and then take a average. Take your blood pressure 00:06:44.00\00:06:46.91 sitting down two times and take a average. 00:06:46.94\00:06:50.38 You take the average of the one that you were 00:06:50.41\00:06:52.32 sitting down. The one standing up is just a 00:06:52.35\00:06:54.95 reference. So, they suggest that as well. 00:06:54.98\00:06:57.48 And so therefore one blood pressure reading 00:06:57.51\00:07:00.13 may not be accurate one you want to take 00:07:00.16\00:07:02.22 at least twice and so but there is different ways 00:07:02.25\00:07:05.06 of doing it but the main things is that we want 00:07:05.09\00:07:06.98 to make sure that we take an accurate reading 00:07:07.01\00:07:09.19 every time. And sometimes in the doctor's office 00:07:09.22\00:07:12.28 you know you're rushing to the doctor's office 00:07:12.31\00:07:14.46 you're looking for a parking place, you know you 00:07:14.49\00:07:17.12 dropped the kids off or whatever, 00:07:17.15\00:07:18.53 the husband off to work and you go into the 00:07:18.56\00:07:20.42 doctor's office and you wait there for 30 minutes 00:07:20.45\00:07:22.57 and you know, you're stressed out and here 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.52 comes the doctor with the white coat 00:07:24.55\00:07:26.28 and take your blood pressure. You're now 00:07:26.31\00:07:27.68 waiting for five minutes and wow it maybe too 00:07:27.71\00:07:30.46 high, it maybe a false positive. 00:07:30.49\00:07:32.93 So you want to take all those into consideration 00:07:32.96\00:07:35.13 taking your blood pressure. Well, I 00:07:35.16\00:07:36.53 know from me, I know when you talk me go have 00:07:36.56\00:07:38.00 a physical done. It's the same thing, 00:07:38.03\00:07:40.51 we know it's called the White coat syndrome. 00:07:40.54\00:07:42.76 Yes right, I have learned that I 00:07:42.79\00:07:45.41 need to be calm and when I go into that 00:07:45.44\00:07:47.87 office I actually once I see him doing my 00:07:47.90\00:07:50.07 blood pressure I start saying the Lord is 00:07:50.10\00:07:51.93 my shepherd I said the prayer. 00:07:51.96\00:07:53.33 Oh! That's good. Lord is my shepherd 00:07:53.36\00:07:54.73 I shall not want, I just lay this, 00:07:54.76\00:07:56.34 you know try to calm myself down because it is true. 00:07:56.37\00:07:58.87 They'll do a reading, it'll be high. 00:07:58.90\00:08:00.88 And yet I know what my pressure, 00:08:00.91\00:08:02.70 my blood pressure is normally. 00:08:02.73\00:08:04.10 And then it will go back again or he ask me 00:08:04.13\00:08:07.03 to go back again later on, to it better, 00:08:07.06\00:08:08.81 but I found it just by just having 00:08:08.84\00:08:10.36 that peace of God. Yeah, that's true. 00:08:10.39\00:08:12.12 He helps calm me down. Now that's a good point 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.44 that you're saying a Bible verse, The Lord is my 00:08:14.47\00:08:16.64 shepherd; I shall not want. That's right. 00:08:16.67\00:08:18.22 Yeah, calm me down. Okay. If it goes 00:08:18.25\00:08:21.64 untreated, a lot of people know they have high 00:08:21.67\00:08:23.28 blood pressure, okay, what can happen if it 00:08:23.31\00:08:25.94 goes untreated. Okay, we have a picture 00:08:25.97\00:08:28.47 on our screen here, and those are a lot of things 00:08:28.50\00:08:31.02 that can happen if blood pressure goes untreated. 00:08:31.05\00:08:33.30 Let's look at this and it's very important 00:08:33.33\00:08:35.87 to understand this graphic here. Number one, 00:08:35.90\00:08:37.94 again left untreated, number one, you increase 00:08:37.97\00:08:42.16 dramatically stroke, and reason for this is that 00:08:42.19\00:08:46.43 when there is pressure against your artery 00:08:46.46\00:08:48.75 wall in the brain then it causes the vessels in the 00:08:48.78\00:08:53.18 brain to rupture causing a stroke. 00:08:53.21\00:08:56.88 Now we're gonna have a program later on, 00:08:56.91\00:08:58.71 later on in several weeks entitled different strokes 00:08:58.74\00:09:02.68 for different folks. We will go into more that later on. 00:09:02.71\00:09:05.18 Let's go back to the graphic let's see what else 00:09:05.21\00:09:07.00 we can what happens to the damage of blood 00:09:07.03\00:09:09.46 vessels if left unchecked. Blood vessels damage 00:09:09.49\00:09:13.28 of course Arteriosclerosis it can damage blood 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.17 vessels, any blood vessels to clean the heart as well. 00:09:16.20\00:09:20.34 Heart attack or congestive heart failure, 00:09:20.37\00:09:23.64 even the kidneys, renal failure again this pressure 00:09:23.67\00:09:27.63 against our artery wall, so any time there's gonna 00:09:27.66\00:09:30.43 be a major organ there, it's gonna damage that 00:09:30.46\00:09:32.88 blood vessel, it's gonna damage also that organ. 00:09:32.91\00:09:35.71 So, it puts some undo stress on the kidneys as well. 00:09:35.74\00:09:39.11 So it can cause renal failure, heart attack, 00:09:39.14\00:09:42.01 strokes and congestive heart failure as well 00:09:42.04\00:09:46.92 just by having high blood pressure and a lot of 00:09:46.95\00:09:51.01 people don't even know they have high blood pressure, 00:09:51.04\00:09:53.47 left unchecked, those are the some of the 00:09:53.50\00:09:55.89 damages right there. So you are going to your 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.77 doctor you find you have high blood pressure 00:09:58.80\00:10:00.54 and of course at that point they're going to put you 00:10:00.57\00:10:03.11 on some type of medication if it's high, 00:10:03.14\00:10:05.15 yes, so what about medication? Yeah, 00:10:05.18\00:10:07.81 like I said before it's the number one reason for 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.93 prescription drugs is high blood pressure. 00:10:09.96\00:10:12.58 The medication for high blood pressure can be 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.49 a problem in our self. We listed several things in 00:10:15.52\00:10:18.61 our work book, but just to summarize it in may be 00:10:18.64\00:10:21.09 30 seconds and so. There are several different 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.84 categories of high blood pressure. You have the 00:10:23.87\00:10:26.67 ACE inhibitors this causes dry cough and etc. 00:10:26.70\00:10:30.79 You have the diuretics, potassium loss, muscle pain 00:10:30.82\00:10:35.63 and cramps and you have the blockers are called 00:10:35.66\00:10:39.42 the ABC blockers. A: Alpha blockers; B: Beta blockers; 00:10:39.45\00:10:45.56 Calcium channel blockers. All those held 00:10:45.59\00:10:49.07 a list of side effects and I counted at least 40. 00:10:49.10\00:10:52.41 Dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, 00:10:52.44\00:10:57.40 weight gain, libido, low sex drive, renal failure, 00:10:57.43\00:11:02.96 liver disease, rapid pulse rate, cold hands, 00:11:02.99\00:11:08.64 extremities, and even can be very fatal as well. 00:11:08.67\00:11:12.76 And that's just the good news. So, a lot of people 00:11:12.79\00:11:16.05 looking for other alternatives other 00:11:16.08\00:11:18.28 than that as well. And let's talk about quickly 00:11:18.31\00:11:20.10 about the sodium I know there are lot of people 00:11:20.13\00:11:22.46 when we talk about high blood pressure, 00:11:22.49\00:11:24.14 we talk about the sodium. And let's talk about sodium 00:11:24.17\00:11:26.72 as salt, table salt and what people are taking in 00:11:26.75\00:11:29.70 and what shall we take on a daily basis. 00:11:29.73\00:11:31.80 Well, you know when we talk about the sodium levels. 00:11:31.83\00:11:33.99 One of the things that people are very surprised 00:11:34.02\00:11:35.93 that when we do in our program and that is 00:11:35.96\00:11:37.50 the 1/4 of teaspoon of sodium is over 590 milligrams. 00:11:37.53\00:11:45.10 1/4 of the teaspoon, okay, 1 teaspoon is over 2360 00:11:45.13\00:11:52.30 milligrams of sodium, oh! My goodness, 00:11:52.33\00:11:53.85 I am giving you those numbers because believe 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.12 it or not the average person should not take in more 00:11:56.15\00:11:59.96 than 2500 milligram of sodium and you say, 00:11:59.99\00:12:03.57 okay, what does that mean. What it means 00:12:03.60\00:12:05.39 that when you go and buy your foods you can 00:12:05.42\00:12:07.15 always see the amount when it comes 00:12:07.18\00:12:09.19 to sodium in milligram amounts. It takes 1000 00:12:09.22\00:12:13.43 milligrams to equal 1 gram of sodium so you 00:12:13.46\00:12:16.09 can see already about 590, 1/4 of teaspoon. 00:12:16.12\00:12:19.54 Then you're moving, you're moving, okay, 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.84 and people don't measure out there sodium. 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.05 What they usually do as they just take the salt 00:12:24.08\00:12:26.21 shaker and they shake, shake, shake. 00:12:26.24\00:12:27.76 Shake, shake, shake. And they shake it more 00:12:27.79\00:12:29.16 than two or three times a day. A person is salt 00:12:29.19\00:12:31.30 sensitive however I've said 2500 milligrams 00:12:31.33\00:12:34.51 sodium a day. But if you're salt sensitive 00:12:34.54\00:12:36.88 we are actually recommend that you not do more than 00:12:36.91\00:12:38.78 1500 milligrams of sodium a day. And so you can 00:12:38.81\00:12:42.63 actually count by looking on your labels. 00:12:42.66\00:12:44.45 Seeing exactly how much sodium is actually there. 00:12:44.48\00:12:46.87 And you can keep a count where you are. 00:12:46.90\00:12:49.00 How about the average American. 00:12:49.03\00:12:51.09 The average American is taking in anywhere 00:12:51.12\00:12:53.81 from 6 to 8 grams of sodium a day. 00:12:53.84\00:12:58.84 I said 6 to 8 grams. Oh! My, grams. 00:12:58.87\00:13:00.73 Grams of sodium a day, alright, which is also 00:13:00.76\00:13:03.69 causing a problem with these high numbers 00:13:03.72\00:13:05.09 you're seeing now of high blood pressure whether 00:13:05.12\00:13:07.01 it's by salt you're actually sprinkling extra salt on 00:13:07.04\00:13:09.94 your food, there is already salt on your processed 00:13:09.97\00:13:12.45 foods, that kind of thing. These are the ways in 00:13:12.48\00:13:14.98 which we can get more sodium in our diet than 00:13:15.01\00:13:17.86 we actually need to have and I guess one of the 00:13:17.89\00:13:20.01 things I want to ask you then okay, it's how do you 00:13:20.04\00:13:22.11 actually go about selecting low sodium foods. 00:13:22.14\00:13:25.17 Okay, there is a easy way of doing folks 00:13:25.20\00:13:27.78 and there is one number you need to remember 00:13:27.81\00:13:30.95 selecting foods that has the right amount of 00:13:30.98\00:13:33.54 sodium that you need particularly those 00:13:33.57\00:13:35.23 who are already hypertension. 00:13:35.26\00:13:36.75 One number, that number is 15. Now we look at 00:13:36.78\00:13:41.23 a package container of food in the grocery store. 00:13:41.26\00:13:44.27 You want to look not so much at the milligram 00:13:44.30\00:13:47.18 amount of sodium but you want to look at the 00:13:47.21\00:13:49.43 far right column, okay, it may have the letters DV 00:13:49.46\00:13:55.46 or the words daily value as a percentage. 00:13:55.49\00:13:59.75 You go down to sodium, go across to the far right 00:13:59.78\00:14:04.23 column you see a percentage there. 00:14:04.26\00:14:07.20 That percentage needs to be 15 or less. 00:14:07.23\00:14:12.31 15 or less you know this a right amount of sodium 00:14:12.34\00:14:16.76 that the percentage, particular person's 00:14:16.79\00:14:18.41 hypertension. If you are not even hypersensitive 00:14:18.44\00:14:21.18 it still need to good to have that percentage 00:14:21.21\00:14:23.63 around 15. Sometimes you can go up to 00:14:23.66\00:14:26.02 20 percent, even 25 percent and with that 00:14:26.05\00:14:28.68 in mind regular table salt is 25 percent, 00:14:28.71\00:14:33.97 regular table salt so that's way past the 15. 00:14:34.00\00:14:36.96 So but you have also some white salt which is 00:14:36.99\00:14:39.77 down to about 12 percent, so that's one way of doing 00:14:39.80\00:14:42.60 that as well. So just looking at the labels 00:14:42.63\00:14:44.63 15 is that number you need to understand for 00:14:44.66\00:14:46.90 looking at the sodium amount that the body 00:14:46.93\00:14:49.25 needs on a daily basis. Several studies have 00:14:49.28\00:14:52.20 come out. They have talked about potassium foods, 00:14:52.23\00:14:54.74 okay, potassium versus sodium type foods. 00:14:54.77\00:14:57.60 Explain to us... I understand that potassium foods 00:14:57.63\00:15:01.02 are also there to help lower our blood pressure, 00:15:01.05\00:15:03.94 so talk about that. Okay, yeah, quickly 00:15:03.97\00:15:07.49 low sodium diets can lower blood pressure what 00:15:09.04\00:15:11.61 they discovered now they say, published in 00:15:11.64\00:15:13.39 Archives of Internal Medicine that when we have foods 00:15:13.42\00:15:17.19 that has a high potassium and a low sodium ratio, 00:15:17.22\00:15:21.46 blood pressure drops even further. 00:15:21.49\00:15:24.27 So with that in mind we have the whole list of 00:15:24.30\00:15:26.54 foods in our work book but so with foods that 00:15:26.57\00:15:28.90 has a high potassium and a low sodium you have 00:15:28.93\00:15:31.14 the lima beans, you have bananas and the orange, 00:15:31.17\00:15:34.90 but they has high potassium and a low sodium, 00:15:34.93\00:15:38.74 the ratio, the higher the potassium the lower 00:15:38.77\00:15:41.46 the sodium. Foods that have a high sodium 00:15:41.49\00:15:44.59 and a low potassium food will raise your 00:15:44.62\00:15:48.38 blood pressure. Those foods are mostly your 00:15:48.41\00:15:51.27 flesh foods and your sea foods. Your flounder, 00:15:51.30\00:15:54.30 salmon, your cod and chicken and roast beef, 00:15:54.33\00:15:58.14 those have a high sodium and a low potassium 00:15:58.17\00:16:03.20 and those foods will raise your blood pressure, 00:16:03.23\00:16:05.37 it's very damaging to the system. 00:16:05.40\00:16:07.53 So now we have idea of the foods that can 00:16:07.56\00:16:09.90 raise your blood pressure and foods that can 00:16:09.93\00:16:12.03 lower your blood pressure.
