Welcome to Adventures in Missions 00:00:16.27\00:00:17.58 with Gospel Outreach. 00:00:17.61\00:00:18.64 I am Julie Sanders Keymer. 00:00:18.67\00:00:19.77 And today, we have the opportunity of hearing 00:00:19.80\00:00:22.17 more about the Philippines. 00:00:22.20\00:00:24.05 And Fred and Arlene Webb, 00:00:24.08\00:00:25.32 welcome to Adventures in Missions. 00:00:25.35\00:00:26.92 Thank you. 00:00:26.95\00:00:27.98 So you folks are in charge of the Gospel Outreach 00:00:28.01\00:00:30.84 workers in the Philippine. 00:00:30.87\00:00:32.54 That's correct. 00:00:32.57\00:00:33.60 And you recently got back from the trip and how was it? 00:00:33.63\00:00:36.70 Wonderful. Great. 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.45 And who all did you visit? 00:00:38.48\00:00:40.33 Oh, we visited everything from Barangay in the North 00:00:40.36\00:00:42.65 to General Santos in the South. 00:00:42.68\00:00:44.50 Wonderful. And Arlene, what was the best part of the whole trip? 00:00:44.53\00:00:47.62 Well, I just enjoyed meeting the people. 00:00:47.65\00:00:49.80 That is to me so thrilling to hear 00:00:49.83\00:00:51.75 their stories of how they came to the Lord. 00:00:51.78\00:00:54.51 Now, Fred, how about you? 00:00:54.54\00:00:55.71 What was something that stood out from this trip? 00:00:55.74\00:00:58.46 Again, meeting the people and seeing the changes 00:00:58.49\00:01:00.87 that take place in their lives 00:01:00.90\00:01:02.11 when they accept Christ as their Savior. 00:01:02.14\00:01:04.63 How wonderful. 00:01:04.66\00:01:05.69 And how many Gospel Outreach workers are in your territory? 00:01:05.72\00:01:08.94 Fifty five. Fifty five, fifty five. 00:01:08.97\00:01:11.16 Wonderful, well, you got some pictures 00:01:11.19\00:01:12.93 and you are gonna take us on a trip. 00:01:12.96\00:01:14.51 All right. We're gonna start on the island of Samar. 00:01:14.54\00:01:19.79 Samar happens to be the third largest island 00:01:19.82\00:01:21.84 in the Philippines but there are very few 00:01:21.87\00:01:24.31 Seventh-day Adventists there. 00:01:24.34\00:01:26.13 And just very recently we got an Adopt-A-Worker 00:01:26.16\00:01:30.40 stationed there in Samar. 00:01:30.43\00:01:32.37 You'll learn more about the Adopt-A-Worker 00:01:32.40\00:01:34.22 later in the program but this first picture 00:01:34.25\00:01:37.13 that we have here is our worker there. 00:01:37.16\00:01:39.40 Ephraim Carrera on the left and when he first went there 00:01:39.43\00:01:44.94 and the time these pictures were taken 00:01:44.97\00:01:46.55 he had been there for two months. 00:01:46.58\00:01:48.34 So hadn't been very long 00:01:48.37\00:01:49.71 but he had found this older gentleman here, 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.91 Carlitos who had been a Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:51.94\00:01:55.56 and has volunteered to be his assistance without pay. 00:01:55.59\00:02:00.20 And so they are working together now 00:02:00.23\00:02:02.09 to try to win people for the church. 00:02:02.12\00:02:04.93 So what's it like in the Philippines? 00:02:04.96\00:02:06.53 Are the Philippines heavily religious group of people, 00:02:06.56\00:02:11.86 are they interested in learning more about Christ? 00:02:11.89\00:02:15.37 Well, when we first visited the Philippines back in 1993 00:02:15.40\00:02:19.16 it was over-- there was about 98% Catholics. 00:02:19.19\00:02:23.26 Today it's only about 80% Catholics. 00:02:23.29\00:02:25.66 So there are Protestants. 00:02:25.69\00:02:26.89 There are many Protestants 00:02:26.92\00:02:28.03 and there are many Muslims and many animists. 00:02:28.06\00:02:32.10 Okay, all right, that kind of gives us some idea. Yeah. 00:02:32.13\00:02:35.27 And so here he's been working here 00:02:35.30\00:02:37.39 and these are some of those he's been studying with. 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.71 Some that he has found that are interested 00:02:40.74\00:02:42.38 in learning more about the gospel. 00:02:42.41\00:02:44.46 There's a grandma. They're old and a young. 00:02:46.09\00:02:49.44 And there were two, I didn't quite figure out, 00:02:49.47\00:02:52.77 there were two elderly ladies here in this home 00:02:52.80\00:02:56.36 who was a grandma and who was what 00:02:56.39\00:02:58.43 but anyway there were two elderly ladies there 00:02:58.46\00:03:00.72 but he's giving Bible study to them. 00:03:00.75\00:03:03.70 So help us have an idea, most people have 00:03:03.73\00:03:06.38 heard of Manila in the Philippines. 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.87 So where are we in conjunction to Manila? 00:03:08.90\00:03:11.72 We are South-East of Manila. 00:03:11.75\00:03:14.79 Manila is on the island of Luzon in the North 00:03:14.82\00:03:17.20 and Samar is one of, what they call the Sian islands, 00:03:17.23\00:03:21.33 the ones in the middle. 00:03:21.36\00:03:22.87 Then down to the south we have Mindanao. 00:03:22.90\00:03:26.17 You can tell his Bible has been used. 00:03:26.20\00:03:28.11 It's quite well worn but he was giving the Bible studies 00:03:28.14\00:03:32.63 from what I could tell without notes, 00:03:32.66\00:03:34.25 just using his Bible. 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.15 Just a young man but he seems to know. 00:03:36.18\00:03:38.08 This is one of the interested people 00:03:38.11\00:03:40.08 who wanted to know more about Jesus Christ. Wonderful. 00:03:40.11\00:03:44.20 This is the home of another one of his interest 00:03:44.23\00:03:47.27 and they-- I think believe 00:03:47.30\00:03:48.81 they do have service here on Sabbath. 00:03:48.84\00:03:51.08 Oh, so in his home, okay. 00:03:51.11\00:03:53.31 This is not--this is the home of one of the interest. 00:03:53.34\00:03:59.13 There was a church there at one time 00:03:59.16\00:04:01.24 but it had disintegrated. 00:04:01.27\00:04:04.46 There was a building but no people 00:04:04.49\00:04:07.67 and so he has now gather together 00:04:07.70\00:04:10.12 some that had been former Seventh-day Adventists 00:04:10.15\00:04:12.49 and they are not coming back to the church. 00:04:12.52\00:04:13.97 So now the church has been used every Sabbath. 00:04:14.00\00:04:16.06 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:04:16.09\00:04:18.11 Now we are on the other side of the island. 00:04:18.14\00:04:20.07 That was on the western coast, 00:04:20.10\00:04:21.57 now we are over on the Eastern coast 00:04:21.60\00:04:22.74 in a place called Llorente and this is where Fred Fragoso, 00:04:22.77\00:04:27.15 he was the former literature evangelist. 00:04:27.18\00:04:30.78 And now he's a Gospel Outreach worker 00:04:30.81\00:04:33.70 and he's using his literature evangelism 00:04:33.73\00:04:36.47 as a means of opening the doors. 00:04:36.50\00:04:38.76 Literally. Literally. 00:04:38.79\00:04:40.91 And getting them to be interested in the program. 00:04:40.94\00:04:44.80 His wife, this is on the Sabbath morning, 00:04:44.83\00:04:46.97 his wife is here conducting the Sabbath school 00:04:47.00\00:04:49.06 for the children, outside. 00:04:49.09\00:04:51.36 Bless their hearts. 00:04:51.39\00:04:52.42 The adults are inside and this is a house. 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.84 And it's a very, well, living room is quite small. 00:04:55.87\00:05:02.00 But you can see they are packed in there pretty tight. 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.39 And the hospitality of the home owners 00:05:04.42\00:05:06.49 to have the people come, how good is that. 00:05:06.52\00:05:07.68 Well, he's the one living in the house. Okay. 00:05:07.71\00:05:09.85 They rented the house for his home and services. 00:05:09.88\00:05:13.38 I've been there for two baptisms and this is the second one. 00:05:13.41\00:05:18.64 He's only been there now 00:05:18.67\00:05:19.98 I think just a little over a year. 00:05:20.01\00:05:22.67 He has about 50 members. Praise the Lord. 00:05:22.70\00:05:25.07 And so they are lined up down on-- 00:05:25.10\00:05:26.79 well, what you see in the background is the ocean. 00:05:26.82\00:05:29.04 I was going to say they are at the beach. 00:05:29.07\00:05:30.70 Yeah. But the baptism is in the river. 00:05:30.73\00:05:33.83 Now this lady has the largest goiter I think I've ever seem. 00:05:33.86\00:05:37.86 You know here in the States if we have a health problem 00:05:37.89\00:05:39.97 we go to the hospital and we get it taken care of. 00:05:40.00\00:05:42.08 That's true. 00:05:42.11\00:05:43.26 There, they have to say, 00:05:43.29\00:05:44.94 how much is this going to cost? 00:05:44.97\00:05:47.31 And if they can't afford it, they don't get treatment. 00:05:47.34\00:05:50.30 They may die early or they may suffer 00:05:50.33\00:05:53.18 but without the money they just don't get treatment. 00:05:53.21\00:05:55.10 And so she had this huge goiter. 00:05:55.13\00:05:57.53 She was going to baptize, 00:05:57.56\00:05:58.80 now the baptism is actually in a river 00:05:58.83\00:06:01.08 right where it goes runs out into the ocean. 00:06:01.11\00:06:03.41 Beautiful. The same place where I was a year before 00:06:03.44\00:06:06.60 and there had been heavy rains 00:06:06.63\00:06:07.79 and it looked like mud but this time 00:06:07.82\00:06:09.95 it was nice clean water and was a much nicer situation. 00:06:09.98\00:06:15.06 This lady said, I want to be a Christian. 00:06:15.09\00:06:18.82 I want to be a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:06:18.85\00:06:20.27 And so goiter and all she was baptized. Bless her heart. 00:06:20.30\00:06:24.61 This picture was taken a year ago when I was there. 00:06:24.64\00:06:27.74 They had bought this piece of property to build a church 00:06:27.77\00:06:30.76 where they could meet together and notice carefully 00:06:30.79\00:06:34.26 there is a concrete wall there beside. 00:06:34.29\00:06:36.24 Oh yeah, there on the right. 00:06:36.27\00:06:37.65 And they concrete is still there but now there is a church. 00:06:37.68\00:06:40.17 Oh great. 00:06:40.20\00:06:41.23 They have built the church and it's not quite finished 00:06:41.26\00:06:44.59 obviously but making great progress. 00:06:44.62\00:06:48.15 And they've got the banana tree is all around. Right. 00:06:48.18\00:06:51.75 They have a water source, 00:06:51.78\00:06:52.81 they drilled a well and they have a CR. 00:06:52.84\00:06:56.38 A CR is what they would call, we would call a restroom. Okay. 00:06:56.41\00:06:59.95 But absolutely, obviously there's no privacy there yet 00:06:59.98\00:07:02.87 but will probably put up some sticks 00:07:02.90\00:07:04.55 and stretch a tarp around the outside of that. 00:07:04.58\00:07:07.06 Wow. So they are all ready. 00:07:07.09\00:07:08.46 I can say is, wow. 00:07:08.49\00:07:11.41 We are on another village now, this is Giporlos. 00:07:11.44\00:07:13.82 In Giporlos this young man is only been there one month 00:07:13.85\00:07:17.00 but there had been worker there before him 00:07:17.03\00:07:19.43 and so there's already a group of people 00:07:19.46\00:07:21.26 that have been gather together. 00:07:21.29\00:07:22.46 Oh, look at them all. 00:07:22.49\00:07:23.52 And you'll notice most of them are youth 00:07:23.55\00:07:27.45 and they seem to the ones that are most interested 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.66 in learning about Jesus. 00:07:29.69\00:07:31.10 So what language are these people speaking, 00:07:31.13\00:07:32.95 is it Tagalog or is it-- Visayan. 00:07:32.98\00:07:34.60 Visayan. Visayan or sometimes it's called Cebuano. 00:07:34.63\00:07:37.14 Do they speak any English? 00:07:37.17\00:07:38.73 Most of them do. Okay. 00:07:38.76\00:07:40.21 Because English is one of the official languages. 00:07:40.24\00:07:42.10 Of the Philippines. 00:07:42.13\00:07:44.16 And then we went down the river to be baptized. Nice. 00:07:44.19\00:07:48.17 That's one of the inspiring things 00:07:48.20\00:07:49.46 about going as we see so many baptisms taking place. 00:07:49.49\00:07:54.60 Okay, now we are at the town of Marabut 00:07:54.63\00:07:57.12 and here we have our geo worker, 00:07:57.15\00:07:59.38 his name is George Taladua. 00:07:59.41\00:08:02.28 And this is his humble church. 00:08:02.31\00:08:05.14 It's not quite finish but they are meeting there. 00:08:05.17\00:08:07.45 He has a congregation, 00:08:07.48\00:08:09.42 many of--most of which are young people. 00:08:09.45\00:08:12.52 Here we have him with our 00:08:12.55\00:08:14.59 Conference President Pastor Ben Mahinay 00:08:14.62\00:08:19.65 and our worker there George, 00:08:19.68\00:08:22.90 he decided to be little more dressed up 00:08:22.93\00:08:24.59 so he had gone and change his shirt. 00:08:24.62\00:08:27.40 Great. And that this is the inside of the church, 00:08:27.43\00:08:30.53 you see their backless benches, 00:08:30.56\00:08:32.74 you get quite ventilation though. 00:08:32.77\00:08:34.52 Yeah, absolutely. The wind blow when it comes. 00:08:34.55\00:08:38.00 They call all the members available to come 00:08:38.03\00:08:40.14 and we had a little meeting and the next picture shows 00:08:40.17\00:08:43.24 little quartet of young girls. 00:08:43.27\00:08:46.05 As I say the big part is this congregation 00:08:46.08\00:08:48.06 are these young people. 00:08:48.09\00:08:49.48 So why is that? Are young people really searching? 00:08:49.51\00:08:53.06 Are they learning more, hearing more about Jesus? 00:08:53.09\00:08:56.32 Why the young people? 00:08:56.35\00:08:57.74 Well, I think that he being young himself 00:08:57.77\00:08:59.93 sort of seeks out the young people. 00:08:59.96\00:09:03.35 The people lived next door the ones 00:09:03.38\00:09:05.89 that donated the land 00:09:05.92\00:09:07.07 and most of the building material for the church 00:09:07.10\00:09:09.13 but they are part of the congregation, 00:09:09.16\00:09:11.15 these young people. 00:09:11.18\00:09:12.50 And we had a nice meeting, they sang, 00:09:12.53\00:09:14.67 we all sang then Fred talked and I talked 00:09:14.70\00:09:17.69 and then we went down to the ocean, 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.91 just across the road was the ocean. 00:09:19.94\00:09:21.54 We went down just a little ways about a half mile 00:09:21.57\00:09:23.88 where they found a nice little beach there 00:09:23.91\00:09:26.18 and we had the members there, there are five children, 00:09:26.21\00:09:31.42 I shouldn't say children, young people being baptized. 00:09:31.45\00:09:34.65 They were age nine to sixteen. Nine to sixteen. 00:09:34.68\00:09:38.02 And there our pastor Ben baptizing there in the ocean 00:09:38.05\00:09:40.60 and now they are just coming in after their baptism. 00:09:40.63\00:09:43.81 I love to see young people give their hearts to the Lord 00:09:43.84\00:09:46.56 because they have a whole life serve Him. 00:09:46.59\00:09:48.98 They certainly do. 00:09:49.01\00:09:50.04 Well, Arlene and Fred, thank you for being here 00:09:50.07\00:09:51.72 and sharing with us about the Philippines 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.54 and we want to encourage you to be a part of Gospel Outreach 00:09:53.57\00:09:57.27 and to be able to fund the Gospel Outreach workers 00:09:57.30\00:09:59.77 that's where you become a missionary. 00:09:59.80\00:10:01.67 And you become a missionary with your pocketbook. 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.01 And we want to say thank you so much for that. 00:10:04.04\00:10:06.33 We have a really neat program here at Gospel Outreach 00:10:06.36\00:10:08.52 its called Adopt-A-Worker 00:10:08.55\00:10:10.01 and we like to share more information with you about that. 00:10:10.04\00:10:13.80 Gospel outreach began a mission 20 years ago 00:10:13.83\00:10:16.56 by asking one simple question, 00:10:16.59\00:10:18.83 in a world filled with famine, 00:10:18.86\00:10:20.73 hunger and starvation what is Jesus waiting for? 00:10:20.76\00:10:25.13 In a world filled with earthquakes, 00:10:25.16\00:10:26.94 hurricane and natural calamities what is Jesus waiting for? 00:10:26.97\00:10:31.72 The gospel tells us in Matthew 24:14, 00:10:31.75\00:10:34.96 "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached 00:10:34.99\00:10:37.30 in all the world for a witness unto all nations, 00:10:37.33\00:10:40.61 and then shall the end come." 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.73 Inspired by those words, Gospel Outreach 00:10:44.87\00:10:47.59 began with one worker and over the past 20 years, 00:10:47.62\00:10:50.68 it's grown into an organization 00:10:50.71\00:10:52.28 with 2,200 workers in 40 plus countries. 00:10:52.31\00:10:56.45 Gospel Outreach is an independent 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.35 Seventh-day Adventist lay ministry run 00:10:58.38\00:11:00.43 entirely by volunteers. 00:11:00.46\00:11:03.47 Gospel Outreach works with the organized church 00:11:03.50\00:11:05.91 to sponsor Bible workers in the 10/40 Window. 00:11:05.94\00:11:09.52 Now what exactly is the 10/40 Window? 00:11:09.55\00:11:13.42 The 10/40 Window is a region of the eastern hemisphere 00:11:13.45\00:11:16.16 located between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator. 00:11:16.19\00:11:20.08 What makes this region special? 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.63 97% of all the people in the world 00:11:22.66\00:11:25.57 who'd never heard the name of Jesus live here. 00:11:25.60\00:11:28.76 Now how exactly does Gospel Outreach work 00:11:28.79\00:11:31.73 to reach these people? 00:11:31.76\00:11:33.89 We do this by working with the church as it places 00:11:33.92\00:11:36.29 trained indigenous workers in new territories, 00:11:36.32\00:11:39.36 sending out disciples just as Jesus did. 00:11:39.39\00:11:42.86 When a Bible worker sponsored by 00:11:42.89\00:11:44.46 Gospel Outreach enters a new village, 00:11:44.49\00:11:46.55 it's estimated that in the first year, 00:11:46.58\00:11:48.59 an additional 300 individuals will be baptized 00:11:48.62\00:11:51.97 and commit their lives to Christ. 00:11:52.00\00:11:54.37 Individuals who have never heard the amazing story 00:11:54.40\00:11:57.59 of God's love are getting to meet Jesus 00:11:57.62\00:11:59.96 for the first time. 00:11:59.99\00:12:01.73 Now how can you help? 00:12:01.76\00:12:03.94 Bible workers rely on sponsorships to support them 00:12:03.97\00:12:06.48 and their families as they share the unconditional love of God. 00:12:06.51\00:12:11.40 This is why Gospel Outreach 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.01 is introducing our Adopt-A-Worker program, 00:12:13.04\00:12:15.79 together with the church we identify new workers 00:12:15.82\00:12:19.03 and areas that need to be reached. 00:12:19.06\00:12:20.84 That is why it's our goal to introduce 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.80 a million new people to Jesus in the next three years. 00:12:22.83\00:12:26.54 All that is remaining for this work 00:12:26.57\00:12:27.90 to begin is your financial help. 00:12:27.93\00:12:31.49 In return, we will keep you updated 00:12:31.52\00:12:33.77 on the exciting progress of your worker 00:12:33.80\00:12:35.99 sending you stories and pictures of the lives 00:12:36.02\00:12:38.70 changed by your donations. 00:12:38.73\00:12:40.82 There are three ways you can get involved. 00:12:40.85\00:12:43.34 You can be a prayer partner for Gospel Outreach 00:12:43.37\00:12:45.58 by praying for our Bible workers. 00:12:45.61\00:12:48.13 Second, become an ambassador 00:12:48.16\00:12:49.84 for our Adopt-A-Worker program 00:12:49.87\00:12:51.40 by telling their family and friends 00:12:51.43\00:12:52.85 about how they can make a difference too. 00:12:52.88\00:12:55.32 And finally, sponsor a Bible worker. 00:12:55.35\00:12:58.28 Call or visit the website today. 00:12:58.31\00:13:01.47 So now that you know a bit about Gospel Outreach 00:13:01.50\00:13:04.16 and now that you know what Jesus is waiting for, 00:13:04.19\00:13:06.92 the final question is what are you waiting for? 00:13:06.95\00:13:12.93 And please don't hesitate. 00:13:12.96\00:13:14.25 We all need to join together 00:13:14.28\00:13:15.58 to share the love of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:13:15.61\00:13:17.36 with as many people as possible. 00:13:17.39\00:13:19.50 And we would encourage you to go to our website 00:13:19.53\00:13:21.83 goaim.org for more information 00:13:21.86\00:13:24.95 and we'd be happy to chat with you about that. 00:13:24.98\00:13:27.43 And Fred, you have some 00:13:27.46\00:13:30.79 Adopt-A-Workers in your territories. 00:13:30.82\00:13:32.85 I do, I have four. And tell us how that's working? 00:13:32.88\00:13:36.00 Do they think it's kind of cool that they are being adopted? 00:13:36.03\00:13:38.84 Yeah, they think they are special people. Well, they are. 00:13:38.87\00:13:42.65 So you encourage them to give a report back 00:13:42.68\00:13:45.26 to the people who are sponsoring them? 00:13:45.29\00:13:46.79 Yes, once a quarter 00:13:46.82\00:13:47.85 they will send us a report telling us 00:13:47.88\00:13:49.30 and what they do on a general basis 00:13:49.33\00:13:50.84 and hopefully give us some interesting stories, 00:13:50.87\00:13:54.11 some you know, stories of how people are converted, 00:13:54.14\00:13:57.82 the things that they have to give up or change in their lives 00:13:57.85\00:14:00.92 when they become Seventh-day Adventist. 00:14:00.95\00:14:03.25 And they maybe even send pictures too. 00:14:03.28\00:14:05.29 Yes. Okay. 00:14:05.32\00:14:06.35 Yes, hopefully there will be picture with every report. 00:14:06.38\00:14:08.79 Well, that's fantastic, real good. 00:14:08.82\00:14:10.37 So our viewers can learn more about that. Right. 00:14:10.40\00:14:13.00 Now Arlene, you are going to take us 00:14:13.03\00:14:14.50 back the Philippines and where are we going now? 00:14:14.53\00:14:16.64 We are going to go to Mindanao to the north east corner. 00:14:16.67\00:14:19.53 Okay. And the first village we are going to visit is Coro. 00:14:19.56\00:14:23.27 And here we have the gospel workers 00:14:23.30\00:14:25.93 and few other members ready to welcome us with singing. 00:14:25.96\00:14:31.47 They are very good at singing 00:14:31.50\00:14:33.16 and they have a good welcome song 00:14:33.19\00:14:35.84 and make you feel that you are wanted. 00:14:35.87\00:14:38.37 And here we have a picture 00:14:38.40\00:14:39.76 the next one of our Gospel Outreach worker, 00:14:39.79\00:14:42.66 his name is Perfecto Tecson. 00:14:42.69\00:14:45.09 How do you like that name? 00:14:45.12\00:14:46.15 Perfecto. I like that. 00:14:46.18\00:14:48.01 And that his wife and I are there standing with him. 00:14:48.04\00:14:50.98 And they are call, the members to come in 00:14:51.01\00:14:53.38 as many as could, this is a weekday. 00:14:53.41\00:14:56.13 We have the children again, 00:14:56.16\00:14:57.67 lots of children which we love to see. 00:14:57.70\00:15:00.37 And then we have a picture here of the whole group from their-- 00:15:00.40\00:15:05.25 the all that could come in. 00:15:05.28\00:15:06.42 So they have mixture of young and old, 00:15:06.45\00:15:08.65 they gave us some wonderful young coconut for Buko Juice. 00:15:08.68\00:15:13.83 They put in a straw and you drink it out. 00:15:13.86\00:15:15.66 It's very good, yes. So-- 00:15:15.69\00:15:19.40 That's one of the pleasures of going to the tropics, 00:15:19.43\00:15:21.55 you get the fresh fruits and juice and all, 00:15:21.58\00:15:24.66 they are just so good. 00:15:24.69\00:15:26.11 Okay, we are going to go now 00:15:26.14\00:15:27.20 to another place in northeastern Mindanao. 00:15:27.23\00:15:30.96 This is Larry Manto and his wife. 00:15:30.99\00:15:34.46 They came to this village of Kidihay to spread the gospel. 00:15:34.49\00:15:40.63 They learned that the chief of the village 00:15:40.66\00:15:43.22 had an encounter with an angle. 00:15:43.25\00:15:45.34 The angle told them to keep 00:15:45.43\00:15:46.46 the Seventh-day Sabbath and not eat pigs. 00:15:46.49\00:15:48.99 Okay. Wow. That gets right to the point. 00:15:49.02\00:15:51.43 And that they should not accept any missionary 00:15:51.46\00:15:53.92 that didn't teach that. 00:15:53.95\00:15:55.16 Well, the first missionary 00:15:55.19\00:15:56.26 that came to the village was a Pentecostal. 00:15:56.29\00:15:59.10 So he asked then the question, 00:15:59.13\00:16:00.49 do you worship on Sabbath? 00:16:00.52\00:16:02.18 No, we worship on Sunday. 00:16:02.21\00:16:03.80 Well, then you can't be here 00:16:03.83\00:16:05.03 because we only worship on Sabbath. 00:16:05.06\00:16:07.65 Isn't that so-- Oh, we can do that. 00:16:07.68\00:16:09.97 And so they built a Seventh-day Pentecostal church. 00:16:10.00\00:16:12.44 Did they really? 00:16:12.47\00:16:13.98 And so this is the situation that Larry came into. Wow. 00:16:14.01\00:16:19.13 He worked with them and he started building a church 00:16:19.16\00:16:22.19 and things seem to be going fairly well. 00:16:22.22\00:16:24.62 He was studying with quite a few 00:16:24.65\00:16:26.22 and then they had Typhoon Pablo. 00:16:26.25\00:16:28.66 Now, Mindanao, when we were lived there 00:16:28.69\00:16:32.57 we were told we don't get typhoons in Mindanao. 00:16:32.60\00:16:35.29 But typhoon Pablo came through 00:16:35.32\00:16:37.12 and wiped out many different things. 00:16:37.15\00:16:39.62 This is the remains of his church. Oh, no. 00:16:39.65\00:16:43.05 The Seventh-day Pentecostal church was blown apart too. 00:16:43.08\00:16:46.24 Oh, no. But this was the remains of his church, 00:16:46.27\00:16:49.81 some of the roofing materials. 00:16:49.84\00:16:51.80 Now the better part of the roofing materials 00:16:51.83\00:16:53.94 he gave to some of the families around 00:16:53.97\00:16:56.76 that had lost the roof off their house. 00:16:56.79\00:16:59.69 Well, that was good. 00:16:59.72\00:17:00.75 He helped the community with the remains that were left 00:17:00.78\00:17:03.43 but there was a lot of damage in that typhoon. 00:17:03.46\00:17:05.36 You can see these banana trees, palm trees. No more bananas. 00:17:05.39\00:17:11.39 All the tops blown out, debris lying everywhere. 00:17:11.42\00:17:15.98 I am told that the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:17:16.01\00:17:18.35 lost 338 churches to this typhoon. 00:17:18.38\00:17:22.03 In that one typhoon. One typhoon. 00:17:22.06\00:17:24.70 Oh my. And they-- some of them look pretty bad. 00:17:24.73\00:17:29.24 Wow. So he has rebuilt the church. 00:17:29.27\00:17:32.49 This is built back on the same foundations. 00:17:32.52\00:17:35.44 He had concrete pillars that are remaining 00:17:35.47\00:17:37.87 and so he had put the roof back on 00:17:37.90\00:17:39.85 and he's back in business. 00:17:39.88\00:17:41.65 And that's a good size church. It is a good size church. 00:17:41.68\00:17:44.40 It can probably sit maybe 100 people there 00:17:44.43\00:17:47.04 and he's going strong and will continue to reach out 00:17:47.07\00:17:51.68 to the people in the community. 00:17:51.71\00:17:53.74 It's hard to discourage our Gospel Outreach workers. 00:17:53.77\00:17:56.41 Well, he got the Lord working on their side, so. 00:17:56.44\00:17:59.87 I think this fellow's T-shirt says it all, "I am all in." 00:17:59.90\00:18:05.84 He and his wife were so happy 00:18:05.87\00:18:08.22 and just have big miles on the face the whole time 00:18:08.25\00:18:10.27 I was there and I though that shirt just said it all. 00:18:10.30\00:18:13.30 Absolutely. So are they sitting inside-- 00:18:13.33\00:18:15.31 That was inside the church. Yes. 00:18:15.34\00:18:17.37 Coming away from there, now we had walk going in 00:18:17.40\00:18:20.45 but coming down they persuaded us 00:18:20.48\00:18:21.85 to ride on a motorcycle. 00:18:21.88\00:18:23.42 Now the white man behind me is Vernon Emde. 00:18:23.45\00:18:27.89 He'd gone along as a videographer. 00:18:27.92\00:18:29.81 And so-- You should had him in front. 00:18:29.84\00:18:33.31 He's carrying his several thousand dollar camera with him 00:18:33.34\00:18:37.59 on that motorcycle as we came down 00:18:37.62\00:18:39.18 and all four of us were on the motorcycle. 00:18:39.21\00:18:40.82 All four of you? The other man was on there too? 00:18:40.85\00:18:42.87 Yeah, he was sitting between the driver and the handle bars. 00:18:42.90\00:18:45.37 Okay, so that's a mini van in the Philippines. Yeah. 00:18:45.40\00:18:48.24 Of course he uses it for logging trucks too. 00:18:48.27\00:18:50.24 Hey, whatever works? 00:18:50.27\00:18:51.82 Imagine coming down on a motorcycle, 00:18:51.85\00:18:53.56 slippery roads and ruts. 00:18:53.59\00:18:56.11 I hope you were praying the whole way, Fred. 00:18:56.14\00:18:57.75 You know how do you steer a motorcycle 00:18:57.78\00:18:59.07 when it is in a rut? Wow. 00:18:59.10\00:19:01.09 We had to stop and get off a few times 00:19:01.12\00:19:02.84 so he could take it on through. 00:19:02.87\00:19:04.12 And one time it almost fell over but we were able to stop it. 00:19:04.15\00:19:06.90 And no helmets but the Lord and your angels were there. 00:19:06.93\00:19:09.35 Helmet, what's that? Yeah, what's that? 00:19:09.38\00:19:10.77 Out on the main road it's required 00:19:10.80\00:19:12.59 but in the mountains, no. 00:19:12.62\00:19:15.16 Okay, now we are in the village of Seneca 00:19:15.19\00:19:17.28 and we have our mission president Pastor Magaya 00:19:17.31\00:19:21.49 and we have our Gospel Outreach worker, Brother Hellagus. 00:19:21.52\00:19:27.05 And which one is the Gospel Outreach person? 00:19:27.08\00:19:28.53 He's one in the middle. In the center. 00:19:28.56\00:19:29.91 Okay. And then his wife. 00:19:29.94\00:19:31.54 And next picture it shows us in front of their church. 00:19:31.57\00:19:35.72 It's a cute little church there. 00:19:35.75\00:19:37.85 And we, they asked the members to come in 00:19:37.88\00:19:40.53 and so quite a few came and we wanted to meet 00:19:40.56\00:19:43.68 some that would be have stories to tell. 00:19:43.71\00:19:46.16 Good conversion stories. 00:19:46.19\00:19:47.73 And so we have now the man there in the blue shirt. 00:19:47.76\00:19:52.16 He's still a young man, his name is Rommel Gutierrez 00:19:52.19\00:19:57.65 and he's standing there with his wife and three children 00:19:57.68\00:20:00.33 but they were not there originally. 00:20:00.36\00:20:02.45 He told the story that he had been born 00:20:02.48\00:20:04.88 and raised on an island, a small island called Dinagat. 00:20:04.91\00:20:08.80 And this island is the home of a very large 00:20:08.83\00:20:13.36 and powerful cult, there in the Philippines. 00:20:13.39\00:20:16.50 And his parents were cult members 00:20:16.53\00:20:18.44 and he was raised there. 00:20:18.47\00:20:20.61 He met a friend, well, there was full, 00:20:20.64\00:20:23.20 island full of families. 00:20:23.23\00:20:25.39 Another family had a daughter named Mitchell 00:20:25.42\00:20:28.75 and he and Mitchell were good friends. 00:20:28.78\00:20:31.21 But as he got older in his teen years 00:20:31.24\00:20:33.67 he felt that this cult was not right 00:20:33.70\00:20:35.91 and so he left on his own 00:20:35.94\00:20:37.81 and he went over to the main land of Mindanao 00:20:37.84\00:20:41.69 and landed in this place here of Seneca. 00:20:41.72\00:20:46.43 And he was looking for something 00:20:46.46\00:20:49.69 and he got into the wrong crowd 00:20:49.72\00:20:51.65 and he got led into a lot of sin. 00:20:51.68\00:20:54.43 And then he met up with a-- we call Born Again church, 00:20:54.46\00:20:57.78 it's a popular church there and they got him 00:20:57.81\00:21:00.42 come into their church and they got him saved. 00:21:00.45\00:21:03.11 And so his life is looking better. Good. 00:21:03.14\00:21:06.51 But sad to say he didn't stick with it, 00:21:06.54\00:21:09.03 he fell back into his old ways. 00:21:09.06\00:21:11.54 And just felt that he was very bad 00:21:11.57\00:21:15.39 and too bad to be saved. 00:21:15.42\00:21:17.16 Meanwhile, Mitchell who was still back 00:21:17.19\00:21:20.92 with their parent began to feel 00:21:20.95\00:21:22.69 that she wanted to see some more of the world 00:21:22.72\00:21:25.67 but she had accepted the cult. 00:21:25.70\00:21:28.22 And so she left and believe it or not ended up 00:21:28.25\00:21:31.20 in the same town where her old friend, Rommel was. 00:21:31.23\00:21:35.43 Well, they got together and ended up getting married. 00:21:35.46\00:21:39.08 She thought still very strong in her cult 00:21:39.11\00:21:41.61 she had this following all of the rigmarole they did. 00:21:41.64\00:21:47.05 And he was not interested in religion 00:21:47.08\00:21:49.93 because he thought he was beyond being saved. 00:21:49.96\00:21:53.20 One day he met our Gospel Outreach there, 00:21:53.23\00:21:55.78 Brother Hellagus. that we saw and he-- 00:21:55.81\00:21:59.47 the brother told him that you know, you can be saved. 00:21:59.50\00:22:02.33 He said, no, not me. 00:22:02.36\00:22:03.46 I am too far gone and he said, no. 00:22:03.49\00:22:05.79 he showed him 1 John 1:9, if we will confess our sins 00:22:05.82\00:22:10.56 God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins. 00:22:10.59\00:22:12.82 And so he finally confesses Rommel 00:22:12.85\00:22:16.33 that there was hope for him. 00:22:16.36\00:22:17.69 So he began Bible studies. 00:22:17.72\00:22:20.05 Now they lived in this small little hut, 00:22:20.08\00:22:22.48 they made with bamboo two rooms. 00:22:22.51\00:22:25.74 When the Bible worker 00:22:25.77\00:22:27.20 or the Gospel Outreach worker came, 00:22:27.23\00:22:29.45 they asked Mitchell, she would like to join them. 00:22:29.48\00:22:31.30 No, she had her own religion. 00:22:31.33\00:22:33.22 So she took the children, they had three children now, 00:22:33.25\00:22:36.18 two older ones and a baby. 00:22:36.21\00:22:38.46 And she took then to the backroom. 00:22:38.49\00:22:41.54 And our Gospel Outreach worker 00:22:41.57\00:22:43.73 and Rommel had their Bible study couple of times a week. 00:22:43.76\00:22:48.08 And she was in the back room 00:22:48.11\00:22:51.56 and the voices could be heard and she began listening. 00:22:51.59\00:22:54.76 Curiosity. Curiosity. 00:22:54.79\00:22:56.83 What is he getting into? Yes. 00:22:56.86\00:22:59.05 And then finally, they were finish the lessons 00:22:59.08\00:23:02.67 and so our Gospel Outreach worker said, now, Rommel, 00:23:02.70\00:23:06.31 would you like to give your heart fully 00:23:06.34\00:23:07.98 to the Lord Jesus and surrender to Him 00:23:08.01\00:23:09.95 and he said, yes, I would. 00:23:09.98\00:23:11.27 And he says, well, then we need 00:23:11.30\00:23:12.33 to set up time for baptism. 00:23:12.36\00:23:14.33 He says, what about your wife 00:23:14.36\00:23:15.87 and he was trying to say, well, she-- 00:23:15.90\00:23:17.77 well, all of the sudden the door opened 00:23:17.80\00:23:19.23 and she came out and she says I accept it also. 00:23:19.26\00:23:22.03 Wow. Praise God. Yes. 00:23:22.06\00:23:24.40 And so in January of this year they were both baptized. 00:23:24.43\00:23:28.43 Now after he told us the story 00:23:28.46\00:23:30.45 we said we want to take some pictures, go get your wife. 00:23:30.48\00:23:33.43 So that's, well, go back to the last picture now. 00:23:33.46\00:23:36.08 So they went and got the wife 00:23:36.11\00:23:37.87 and she came with the children and she had a blue plastic bag. 00:23:37.90\00:23:42.63 And she said to our conference mission president, 00:23:42.66\00:23:46.97 I want to give this to you. 00:23:47.00\00:23:48.80 This is the things that we use in our cult ceremonies 00:23:48.83\00:23:53.87 and I am done with that now 00:23:53.90\00:23:56.31 and I don't even want to have it in the house. 00:23:56.34\00:23:58.70 And so she took out the bag and we saw the various things. 00:23:58.73\00:24:02.34 The top thing you see there is a T-shirt, 00:24:02.37\00:24:04.40 yellow apparently was their main color. 00:24:04.43\00:24:06.47 Okay. Has many cult symbols. 00:24:06.50\00:24:08.18 It also had a little picture of Jesus, 00:24:08.21\00:24:10.27 just to make sure they cover everything, I guess. 00:24:10.30\00:24:13.29 Then there was a headscarf, 00:24:13.32\00:24:14.95 a large scarf and then there was a small like a handkerchief. 00:24:14.98\00:24:19.29 And then they had a ring and then a pendent 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.72 that she wore around her neck. 00:24:21.75\00:24:24.13 Well, she gives them to our pastor there 00:24:24.16\00:24:26.80 and we go talk about what should we do with this. 00:24:26.83\00:24:30.27 And remember in the Bible they came 00:24:30.30\00:24:31.93 and they burn the books of magic. 00:24:31.96\00:24:34.03 So we decided we need to burn these 00:24:34.06\00:24:36.24 that would be the proper thing. 00:24:36.27\00:24:37.30 Sure. So immediately some of the brother went 00:24:37.33\00:24:39.75 and got some kindling 00:24:39.78\00:24:40.92 and some leaves and we started the fire. 00:24:40.95\00:24:43.56 And articles by article-- one by one, 00:24:43.59\00:24:45.83 Mitchell put then on the flames to burn them 00:24:45.86\00:24:49.62 with a big smile on her face, 00:24:49.65\00:24:51.16 she was so happy that this part of her life 00:24:51.19\00:24:53.30 was now gone forever. 00:24:53.33\00:24:55.55 And so the shirt there was sort of stuffing up the fire 00:24:55.58\00:25:01.26 and so they lift it up 00:25:01.29\00:25:02.61 and so they get the flames going again. 00:25:02.64\00:25:04.58 But how moving, to that be gone. Right. 00:25:04.61\00:25:08.37 And so they burned it all up and then we had a praise 00:25:08.40\00:25:13.74 and thanksgiving prayer to the Lord for saving this soul 00:25:13.77\00:25:16.77 and we finished up with the church members 00:25:16.80\00:25:20.07 all gathering together. 00:25:20.10\00:25:21.50 That is the congregation there at this church. 00:25:21.53\00:25:23.87 Oh, praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:25:23.90\00:25:25.78 He saves us all, doesn't He? That's right. 00:25:25.81\00:25:27.56 No matter where we come from and-- 00:25:27.59\00:25:28.84 Or how bad we've been. Yes. 00:25:28.87\00:25:30.49 And He's a powerful God. Oh, He is. 00:25:30.52\00:25:32.55 He is so powerful that He keeps universes up 00:25:32.58\00:25:36.47 and why can't we come to him 00:25:36.50\00:25:38.25 with anything that's on our hearts. 00:25:38.28\00:25:39.84 And other things that those symbols 00:25:39.87\00:25:42.06 before was to protest her physically. 00:25:42.09\00:25:44.74 And so we pay that the Lord would put His arms around her 00:25:44.77\00:25:47.39 and protect her now that these were gone. 00:25:47.42\00:25:49.33 But isn't that something how no matter where we are, 00:25:49.36\00:25:52.63 what we say is so important 00:25:52.66\00:25:54.63 and here the Gospel Outreach worker 00:25:54.66\00:25:56.04 was sharing to her husband. 00:25:56.07\00:25:57.52 Yes. Well, that is fantastic. 00:25:57.55\00:25:59.94 Well, thank you both of you for being here, 00:25:59.97\00:26:01.91 Arlene and Fred Webb, for giving us report 00:26:01.94\00:26:04.09 on the Philippines and may the Lord bless you 00:26:04.12\00:26:05.94 and keep you safe as you work 00:26:05.97\00:26:07.81 with these people and encourage those Gospel Outreach workers. 00:26:07.84\00:26:10.56 Yes.
