Hannon, 00:02:34.88\00:02:37.82 a law student. 00:02:37.85\00:02:39.32 Brother John, a Benedictine monk, lived in a--he was a 00:02:39.35\00:02:42.66 hospital chaplain, an assistant prison warden, a Hollywood 00:02:42.69\00:02:46.29 actor, and a surgeon aboard a Canadian Navy destroyer 00:02:46.33\00:02:50.77 with no medical training, 00:02:50.80\00:02:52.17 and he was performing surgeries successfully. 00:02:52.20\00:02:59.87 And then you've got Arthur Furguson. 00:02:59.91\00:03:03.48 He was a smooth operator, a Scottish fellow dressed 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.15 impeccably, had perfect diction, looked very sophisticated. 00:03:07.18\00:03:12.95 And he succeeded in one year, he sold Nelson's pillar in 00:03:12.99\00:03:18.23 Trafalgar Square to some American tourists. 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.56 He began to think Americans were gullible because he also 00:03:20.60\00:03:23.03 sold Big Ben for $5,000. 00:03:23.06\00:03:26.60 He accepted $10,000 down payment for Buckingham Palace. 00:03:26.63\00:03:31.57 When he came to the USA, which he figured would be a lot 00:03:31.61\00:03:34.81 easier, he did sell the White House to a cattle rancher, 00:03:34.84\00:03:38.11 gave him a 99-year lease for $100,000. 00:03:38.15\00:03:43.02 He was arrested when he tried to sell the Statue of Liberty 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.69 to an Australian. 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.36 True story. 00:03:48.39\00:03:50.69 Then you've got Victor Lustig, Eastern European, very bright, 00:03:50.73\00:03:54.13 spoke like five or six languages. 00:03:54.20\00:03:57.63 He sold the Eiffel Tower two different times 00:03:57.67\00:04:04.17 without being caught. 00:04:04.21\00:04:05.97 Came to America, told everybody that he was a count, 00:04:06.01\00:04:09.18 and he had an accent, he was very dignified, 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.48 and swindled so many people. 00:04:11.51\00:04:13.62 Eventually, he decided rather than conning people, it'd be 00:04:13.65\00:04:16.58 easier to just print his own money, and he was finally 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.95 arrested for one of the most massive counterfeiting 00:04:18.99\00:04:21.59 operations, and he died in prison. 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.86 That's Victor Lustig. 00:04:24.89\00:04:27.76 The big swindler is the devil. 00:04:27.76\00:04:31.27 The devil is a counterfeiter. 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.37 And he has a counterfeit for every truth of God. 00:04:33.40\00:04:37.24 The devil has a counterfeit salvation, got a counterfeit 00:04:37.27\00:04:40.44 Holy Spirit, he's got a counterfeit baptism, counterfeit 00:04:40.48\00:04:44.28 speaking in tongues, counterfeit love, and it shouldn't surprise 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.28 us that he's got a counterfeit day of rest. 00:04:47.32\00:04:51.65 Now, if you look in the Bible, this is a prophecy seminar, 00:04:51.69\00:04:54.92 but you read Revelation chapter 1, verse 10. 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.29 John says, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard 00:04:57.33\00:05:02.13 behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet." 00:05:02.16\00:05:06.40 What is this Lord's Day? 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.90 Someone said, "Well, it's because the vision of 00:05:08.94\00:05:11.04 Revelation, he saw the Lord's coming, and so he called it 00:05:11.07\00:05:14.48 the Lord's Day." 00:05:14.51\00:05:16.04 Others have said, "Well, that was Sunday. 00:05:16.08\00:05:17.71 He had that vision on Sunday, that's the Lord's Day." 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.52 Others have said, "Well, he was working in the mines, he was a 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.69 prisoner on Patmos, but he refused to work on Sabbath, 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.86 and God gave him the vision of Revelation on the Sabbath day." 00:05:26.89\00:05:31.09 So, what does the Bible say? 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.69 And that's our first question. 00:05:32.73\00:05:34.36 What day biblically is the Lord's Day? 00:05:34.40\00:05:37.97 How about we let the Bible describe itself, 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.30 give our answers, amen? 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.17 So, let's look and find out. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.37 You look in Luke chapter 6, verse 5, and Jesus said, 00:05:44.41\00:05:48.18 and we've read this several times already, he said, 00:05:48.21\00:05:50.35 "The Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath." 00:05:50.38\00:05:56.12 So, what is the Lord's Day? 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.12 Jesus said the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.46 Look again in Isaiah 58, did you catch something 00:06:00.49\00:06:03.32 we read the other night? 00:06:03.36\00:06:05.13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing 00:06:05.16\00:06:07.40 your pleasure on the Jewish holy day." 00:06:07.46\00:06:10.63 Is that what he says? 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.20 He says, "On my holy day," so what is the Lord's Day? 00:06:12.23\00:06:15.54 God tells us. 00:06:15.57\00:06:17.31 And right there in the command in Exodus 20, "Six days you 00:06:17.34\00:06:20.34 shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.78 is the Sabbath," of a denomination, or of the Lord? 00:06:22.81\00:06:29.48 There is nothing in the Bible that tells us any other day 00:06:29.52\00:06:33.99 than the Sabbath day is the day that the Lord 00:06:34.02\00:06:36.59 would designate as his day. 00:06:36.62\00:06:38.93 He rested, he blessed it, he set it aside. 00:06:38.96\00:06:41.33 He made a whole day not where he created anything, but a day, 00:06:41.36\00:06:45.73 a day of relationship, love, and worship. 00:06:45.77\00:06:48.67 Next question. 00:06:48.70\00:06:50.61 If the Sabbath is the Lord's Day, why do so many 00:06:50.64\00:06:53.48 people observe Sunday? 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.81 People want to know what the Bible really teaches. 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.51 "He said to them, 'All too well you reject the commandment 00:06:58.55\00:07:01.92 of God, that you may keep your tradition.'" There's a lot of 00:07:01.95\00:07:06.52 traditions that have substituted for biblical truth. 00:07:06.55\00:07:10.73 Furthermore, Ezekiel 22, they had this problem with neglecting 00:07:10.76\00:07:14.00 the Sabbath even in the Old Testament. 00:07:14.03\00:07:16.43 Ezekiel said, "Her priests have violated my laws, 00:07:16.46\00:07:19.50 and have profaned my holy things." 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.30 Profaning something means you take something sacred 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.47 and you treat it as common. 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.54 And it goes on to say, "They put no difference between 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.88 the holy and the profane. 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.81 They have hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.05 and I am profaned among them." 00:07:34.08\00:07:35.95 This is God's people he was talking to. 00:07:35.98\00:07:38.19 Now, before I go any farther, I want to explain to you the word 00:07:38.22\00:07:43.86 "Sabbath" is mentioned 60 times in the New Testament. 00:07:43.89\00:07:48.23 I think no one questions, I don't know, hundreds of times 00:07:48.26\00:07:50.87 it may be mentioned in the Old Testament, 00:07:50.90\00:07:52.63 but it's 60 times in the New Testament. 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.77 Never is it said that it is done away with 00:07:54.80\00:07:57.04 or it has been changed. 00:07:57.07\00:07:59.61 There were a number of disputes about how to keep it, 00:07:59.64\00:08:02.54 but never whether or not you should keep it. 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.15 The first day of the week that we commonly call Sunday, 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.65 you realize the days of the week in the Bible, 00:08:07.68\00:08:11.22 they don't call them Wednesday and Monday. 00:08:11.25\00:08:13.89 We get--our calendar names and our weekly names 00:08:13.92\00:08:17.13 we get from the Romans. 00:08:17.16\00:08:19.26 They worshiped the sun on the first day of the week, moon day, 00:08:19.29\00:08:22.73 Monday, Thor's day, Thursday, Odin's day, Wednesday, 00:08:22.76\00:08:29.24 and so none of these names are in the Bible. 00:08:29.27\00:08:31.47 First day of the week was called first day, second day, third 00:08:31.51\00:08:34.21 day, fourth day, fifth day, preparation day, Sabbath day. 00:08:34.24\00:08:37.81 So, you're never going to find the word "Wednesday" 00:08:37.85\00:08:39.55 in the Bible. 00:08:39.58\00:08:40.95 If you do, you have a strange Bible. 00:08:40.98\00:08:43.22 So, let's find out if there's any place in the Bible where God 00:08:43.25\00:08:49.32 has changed the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day. 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.26 If we look at every text that speaks of the first day 00:08:52.29\00:08:55.50 of the week in the Bible, we should find out if it's there. 00:08:55.53\00:08:58.80 That sounds fair? At least in the New Testament. 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.14 So, that's what we're going to do. 00:09:01.17\00:09:03.04 Do any of the first five resurrection texts say 00:09:03.07\00:09:07.04 that Sunday is a new holy day? 00:09:07.08\00:09:09.44 Let's look at them. 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.11 Matthew 28:1, "In the end of the Sabbath, as it began 00:09:11.15\00:09:14.65 to dawn towards the first day of the week." 00:09:14.68\00:09:16.75 Well, one thing this verse tells us is the Sabbath 00:09:16.79\00:09:18.49 was still the Sabbath. 00:09:18.52\00:09:20.52 And it actually tells us the Sabbath was just before 00:09:20.56\00:09:22.72 the first day. 00:09:22.76\00:09:26.06 "Now when Jesus was risen early," and this is Mark 16:9, 00:09:26.09\00:09:29.70 "on the first day of the week, he appeared first 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.80 to Mary Magdalene." 00:09:31.83\00:09:34.77 Now, by the way, did that past verse, did it say anything 00:09:34.80\00:09:37.34 about it being a new Sabbath day? 00:09:37.37\00:09:41.01 "The first day of the week comes Mary Magdalene early 00:09:41.04\00:09:43.68 while it was yet still dark." 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.65 That's John 20, verse 1. 00:09:45.68\00:09:48.28 And it goes on to say in Mark 16, this is another verse, "Now 00:09:48.32\00:09:54.32 when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother 00:09:54.36\00:09:57.59 of James, and Salome, bought spices that they might 00:09:57.63\00:10:01.20 come anoint him." 00:10:01.23\00:10:02.76 Why were they coming to anoint him Sunday morning? 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.33 Because the sun was going down Friday afternoon when he died. 00:10:05.37\00:10:08.30 They were afraid they would not complete a rather intensive job, 00:10:08.34\00:10:12.74 and they wanted to do it before the Sabbath. 00:10:12.77\00:10:14.84 You could biblically still anoint a person within 3 days 00:10:14.88\00:10:17.85 of their death before they began to decompose. 00:10:17.88\00:10:20.42 And they said, "Let's wait, we'll come back early Sunday 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.25 and do it then because Jesus wouldn't want us doing 00:10:23.28\00:10:25.52 this on the Sabbath." 00:10:25.55\00:10:26.99 Sabbath was that important to the disciples. 00:10:27.02\00:10:29.26 Now, it states, of course, they came, the tomb was empty, 00:10:29.29\00:10:32.36 praise the Lord, but here's a question. 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.33 Did that make it a new Sabbath day? 00:10:35.36\00:10:38.93 How important was it that Jesus died for us on Friday? 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.80 Very important. 00:10:42.84\00:10:44.27 And when he had the Lord's Supper, the communion service 00:10:44.31\00:10:47.08 on Thursday, do we all agree that that was important? 00:10:47.11\00:10:50.81 He establishes a new covenant. 00:10:50.85\00:10:53.42 Did it make it a new Sabbath? 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.18 Did it do away with the old Sabbath because something 00:10:55.22\00:10:57.65 important in the gospel happened on a certain day of the week? 00:10:57.69\00:11:01.79 And so, trying to use that as an argument, 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.53 the Bible doesn't use it. I don't think it's fair. 00:11:03.56\00:11:07.36 >>The Bible tells us that God is love. 00:11:07.40\00:11:10.57 The essence of the great commandments are to love the 00:11:10.60\00:11:12.83 Lord and to love your neighbor. But real love requires time. 00:11:12.87\00:11:17.17 That's why, after God made the world in six days, he made one 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.88 more day for a special love relationship between God the 00:11:20.91\00:11:25.71 Creator and His creatures - it's called the Sabbath day. 00:11:25.75\00:11:29.02 Many people misunderstand whether it's still applicable 00:11:29.05\00:11:32.45 today for Christians or which day the Sabbath is. 00:11:32.49\00:11:35.39 Would you like to better understand what is meant by 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.96 Jesus wanting to give us that rest? 00:11:37.99\00:11:41.26 He says, 'Come unto Me and I'll give you rest.' We have a 00:11:41.30\00:11:43.97 special study guide and it's called The Lost Day of History . 00:11:44.00\00:11:47.97 In this lesson we explain how you can enjoy that rest that 00:11:48.00\00:11:51.47 Jesus promises to those that come unto Him who are weary and 00:11:51.51\00:11:55.31 heavy laden. You can obtain your free copy by 00:11:55.34\00:11:57.98 going to the web address on your screen - amazingfacts.org - or 00:11:58.01\00:12:03.25 call the phone number there and, when you do, ask for offer #113. 00:12:03.28\00:12:08.12 I can promise you, you'll never be the same and you will be 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.76 encouraged and comforted by this study. 00:12:10.79\00:12:13.73 And that's why we do what we do here at Amazing Facts, 00:12:13.76\00:12:16.33 because God's message is our mission. 00:12:16.36\00:12:19.77 If Sunday's not there to honor the resurrection, 00:12:19.80\00:12:22.87 what does the Lord have? 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.41 How do Christians remember Jesus' death, 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.78 burial, and resurrection? 00:12:26.81\00:12:29.01 Romans 6, verse 3, "Or do you not know that as many of us 00:12:29.04\00:12:33.68 as have been baptized into Christ Jesus 00:12:33.72\00:12:36.15 were baptized into his death?" 00:12:36.18\00:12:39.19 And it goes on to say, "Therefore we are buried with 00:12:39.22\00:12:42.46 him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised 00:12:42.49\00:12:47.23 from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should 00:12:47.23\00:12:50.93 walk in a newness of life." 00:12:50.97\00:12:53.10 So, did God establish something to memorialize his death, 00:12:53.13\00:12:57.77 burial, and resurrection? 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.74 Yes, but it wasn't a new Sabbath because there was nothing 00:12:59.77\00:13:04.15 wrong with the old Sabbath. 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.28 Think about it, did God establish the Sabbath 00:13:06.31\00:13:09.02 before or after sin? 00:13:09.05\00:13:11.79 Before sin. 00:13:11.82\00:13:13.15 So, was it part of his perfect plan? 00:13:13.19\00:13:15.22 Yes. Why would he change it? 00:13:15.26\00:13:17.96 He says, "I am the Lord, I don't change." 00:13:17.99\00:13:20.40 There is nothing wrong with it. 00:13:20.43\00:13:21.96 And then you have a similar verse in Colossians 2:12, 00:13:22.00\00:13:23.93 "Buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised 00:13:23.97\00:13:27.40 with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him 00:13:27.44\00:13:31.31 from the dead." 00:13:31.34\00:13:32.87 Baptism again is connected with the resurrection. 00:13:32.91\00:13:36.24 So, every time a person is baptized, it's like 00:13:36.28\00:13:38.18 they have been raised from the dead. 00:13:38.21\00:13:40.35 He didn't create a new Sabbath day to memorialize that. 00:13:40.38\00:13:44.42 Luke 24, verse 1, and this is the fifth of the first 8 verses 00:13:44.45\00:13:50.03 where the first day is mentioned. 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.33 "Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, 00:13:52.36\00:13:54.93 they came upon the sepulcher." 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.07 That's a tomb. 00:13:57.10\00:13:58.40 It's just stating a historical fact. 00:13:58.43\00:14:00.04 Now, we just went through them. 00:14:00.07\00:14:01.57 All those verses that mention the first day are simply 00:14:01.60\00:14:03.74 giving the record that the Sabbath was over. 00:14:03.77\00:14:06.84 They came back, why does it mention the first day? 00:14:06.88\00:14:08.91 Because now they can resume their work. 00:14:08.94\00:14:11.48 Jesus even kept the Sabbath in his death. 00:14:11.51\00:14:15.38 He went to sleep Friday afternoon, he woke up Sunday 00:14:15.42\00:14:18.32 morning to continue his work as our high priest, 00:14:18.35\00:14:21.16 mediator, intercessor before the Father. 00:14:21.19\00:14:23.76 Amen? 00:14:23.79\00:14:25.36 Now, we're going to jump to the sixth text. 00:14:25.39\00:14:28.50 And it talks about what I think is a regular meeting. 00:14:28.53\00:14:30.70 You'll find this in John 20, verse 19. 00:14:30.73\00:14:33.64 Then it says that same day, the day of the resurrection, "Being 00:14:33.67\00:14:36.60 the first day of the week, when the doors were shut, the 00:14:36.64\00:14:39.77 disciples were assembled," to celebrate and inaugurate 00:14:39.81\00:14:43.45 the new holy day of the Christian era. 00:14:43.48\00:14:46.25 No, they got together for fear of the Jews. 00:14:46.28\00:14:48.75 They are trembling. 00:14:48.78\00:14:50.29 They've just killed Jesus. 00:14:50.32\00:14:51.65 They tried to arrest Mark, who was following Christ, 00:14:51.69\00:14:54.36 and he fled naked. 00:14:54.39\00:14:56.26 And now the body has disappeared, in spite 00:14:56.29\00:14:58.39 of the fact Roman soldiers were there guarding it, 00:14:58.43\00:15:01.00 put there by Pilate. 00:15:01.03\00:15:02.50 They're going to be blamed. 00:15:02.53\00:15:04.13 The religious leaders had paid the guard to say 00:15:04.17\00:15:07.14 the disciples stole the body. 00:15:07.17\00:15:09.74 They're terrified. 00:15:09.77\00:15:12.57 And so, Jesus--they're not gathered to celebrate 00:15:12.61\00:15:14.54 a new Sabbath. 00:15:14.58\00:15:15.84 It's telling you that they were trembling, and then Jesus shows 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.05 up, made them jump 3 feet off the ground. 00:15:18.08\00:15:21.92 Does the seventh passage say that Sunday is holy? 00:15:21.95\00:15:25.45 Let's take a look at it. 00:15:25.49\00:15:26.82 Now, I'm going to read this one with you. 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.56 And you read in 1 Corinthians chapter 16, "On the first day of 00:15:28.59\00:15:32.63 the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up 00:15:32.66\00:15:36.97 that he may prosper--as he may prosper, that there be 00:15:37.00\00:15:40.57 no collections when I come." 00:15:40.60\00:15:44.17 Now, why is Paul telling them on the first--some will argue 00:15:44.21\00:15:48.64 that's because this was the new Christian Sabbath, 00:15:48.68\00:15:51.21 and they're taking an offering. 00:15:51.25\00:15:54.18 Anything says you can only give an offering on Sabbath? 00:15:54.22\00:15:58.05 Paul was actually telling them--when he says lay by you 00:15:58.09\00:16:01.02 in store, what does it mean, "lay by you"? 00:16:01.06\00:16:04.69 Does that mean a church or at home? 00:16:04.73\00:16:07.46 He's coming through, making haste on his way to Jerusalem to 00:16:07.50\00:16:11.10 bring a special offering to the Jews because there's a 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.70 famine there, in the Christian Jews, and he's saying, 00:16:13.74\00:16:16.74 "Set something aside at home. 00:16:16.77\00:16:19.07 After you get your accounts in order, you've done your giving 00:16:19.11\00:16:21.48 on Sabbath, at home on the first of the week, when you get your 00:16:21.51\00:16:24.21 books in order, put something else aside not for your local 00:16:24.25\00:16:27.58 church needs, but that I can take an emergency 00:16:27.62\00:16:29.98 relief offering to the people struggling from 00:16:30.02\00:16:33.05 the famine in Jerusalem." 00:16:33.09\00:16:34.92 It had nothing to do with there was a church meeting and they 00:16:34.96\00:16:37.56 took an offering, or that this is a new Sabbath day. 00:16:37.59\00:16:40.86 This is not the substitute for the Ten Commandments. 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.77 Does the eighth and final New Testament text command us 00:16:43.80\00:16:48.47 to observe Sunday as a holy day? 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.31 This is the last one, go to Acts chapter 20, verse 7. 00:16:50.34\00:16:54.48 And it says, "Now the first day of the week, when the disciples 00:16:54.51\00:16:57.25 came together to break bread." 00:16:57.28\00:16:59.11 And people go, "Ah, there you have it, they came together 00:16:59.15\00:17:01.35 on the first of the week to break bread. 00:17:01.38\00:17:03.69 That's because they were having a communion service, 00:17:03.72\00:17:06.65 and this is the new Sabbath, and this indicates this 00:17:06.69\00:17:08.72 is when they would normally meet." 00:17:08.76\00:17:12.03 I'm going to read this to you right from the Bible. 00:17:12.06\00:17:14.36 Look in Acts chapter 2, verse 46. 00:17:14.36\00:17:17.27 It says when the Holy Spirit was poured out, they continued, 00:17:17.30\00:17:21.30 "Daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread 00:17:21.34\00:17:24.81 from house to house, they ate their meat with gladness." 00:17:24.84\00:17:29.01 What does breaking bread mean? 00:17:29.04\00:17:30.75 Does it always mean a communion service biblically, 00:17:30.78\00:17:33.25 breaking bread from house to house? 00:17:33.28\00:17:35.08 When Jesus on the road to Emmaus, he ate 00:17:35.12\00:17:36.65 with two disciples, it wasn't a communion service. 00:17:36.69\00:17:38.82 They asked him to bless the bread. 00:17:38.85\00:17:40.86 They were eating. You ever use the expression, 00:17:40.89\00:17:43.46 "Let's get together and break bread"? 00:17:43.49\00:17:45.06 Does it mean have a communion service? 00:17:45.09\00:17:46.49 Not all the time. 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.06 It would mean, "Let's eat." 00:17:48.10\00:17:49.83 And so, to say in Acts chapter 20 that this was evidence that 00:17:49.86\00:17:53.13 it was a religious meeting on Sunday, it doesn't hold water, 00:17:53.17\00:17:56.57 friends, not if you're going to, in my opinion, be biblically 00:17:56.60\00:17:59.47 honest about what the text is saying. 00:17:59.51\00:18:02.04 It's telling you there was a resurrection, Paul's leaving, 00:18:02.08\00:18:05.11 he's beginning a journey, they'd finished the Sabbath together, 00:18:05.15\00:18:08.08 and it's a wonderful miracle. 00:18:08.12\00:18:11.32 Do you see what I'm saying? 00:18:11.35\00:18:12.82 So, we've just looked at all the texts in the New Testament 00:18:12.85\00:18:15.39 that talk about the first day of the week. 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.43 Do any of them say that God has now changed the holiness 00:18:17.46\00:18:22.43 and the reverence of the seventh day to the first day? 00:18:22.46\00:18:26.20 They're not saying that. 00:18:26.23\00:18:27.90 And so, we've got to be very careful 00:18:27.94\00:18:29.37 about building that argument. 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.04 Well, if Sunday keeping isn't in the Bible, here's where 00:18:31.07\00:18:33.81 we all bring it together, where did it come from? 00:18:33.84\00:18:38.65 Matthew 15, verse 9, Jesus said, "And in vain they worship me, 00:18:38.68\00:18:42.38 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." 00:18:42.42\00:18:45.29 They're manmade commandments that sort of became 00:18:45.32\00:18:48.02 doctrines that they teach. 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.36 You can look in the Encyclopedia Britannica, you can look 00:18:50.39\00:18:52.56 in a lot of history books, it is pretty clear. 00:18:52.59\00:18:55.40 "The earliest recognition of the observance of Sunday, 00:18:55.43\00:18:57.87 it's a constitution of Constantine." 00:18:57.90\00:19:01.20 He established it in 321 AD. 00:19:01.24\00:19:04.21 They called it the edict of Milan. 00:19:04.24\00:19:06.54 It wasn't the Son-day, Son of God, S-O-N, 00:19:06.57\00:19:09.71 it was the Sunday, S-U-N. 00:19:09.74\00:19:12.25 And here's where you find an excerpt of that law, 00:19:12.28\00:19:15.95 "Enacting that courts of justice, and inhabitants of 00:19:15.98\00:19:18.65 towns, and workshops were to rest on Sunday." 00:19:18.69\00:19:22.76 Notice the spelling. 00:19:22.79\00:19:25.09 And again, you can read here from the Codex Justinianus. 00:19:25.13\00:19:29.10 And it says, "On the venerable day of the sun, let the 00:19:29.13\00:19:31.70 magistrates and the people residing in the cities rest, 00:19:31.73\00:19:34.74 and let all of the workshops be closed." 00:19:34.77\00:19:38.74 And all these pagans came into the church, and they said, 00:19:38.77\00:19:40.81 "Well, we want to keep our idols," and the church 00:19:40.84\00:19:42.64 leaders said, "Well, you'd better rename them. 00:19:42.68\00:19:45.25 Better take, you know, Jupiter, Mercury, and Apollos, 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.58 and call them Peter, James and John." 00:19:47.62\00:19:50.02 And they had statues of Diana, they said, "Call her Mary." 00:19:50.05\00:19:54.22 And all of a sudden, the church that used to be settled 00:19:54.26\00:19:57.29 in Jerusalem, the capital now came to Rome, 00:19:57.33\00:20:00.13 went through a dramatic change. 00:20:00.16\00:20:02.40 One of those changes, the Jews were very unpopular 00:20:02.43\00:20:05.70 during that time. 00:20:05.73\00:20:07.34 Anything connected with Judaism they wanted to get away from. 00:20:07.37\00:20:10.61 So, to distance themselves--for a while, 00:20:10.64\00:20:12.51 Christians kept both days. 00:20:12.54\00:20:14.71 But since the Sabbath day, the church leaders 00:20:14.74\00:20:17.58 would say it's a day of fasting. 00:20:17.61\00:20:19.21 Well, the Bible doesn't say that. 00:20:19.25\00:20:20.62 But the Sunday was a day of feasting. 00:20:20.65\00:20:22.45 Which would you prefer, a day of fasting or a day of feasting? 00:20:22.48\00:20:26.09 Gradually, over time, people started to abolish the 00:20:26.12\00:20:29.89 seventh-day biblical Sabbath in preference for the more popular 00:20:29.92\00:20:33.66 celebration of the Sunday. 00:20:33.70\00:20:37.13 And that's how it made its way into the church. 00:20:37.17\00:20:39.97 It wasn't because of a command of God. 00:20:40.00\00:20:42.40 It was because of a compromise. 00:20:42.44\00:20:45.07 Again, Arthur Weigall in his book "Paganism in Christianity," 00:20:45.11\00:20:48.18 "The church made a sacred day of Sunday, largely because it was a 00:20:48.21\00:20:52.31 festival, and it was a weekly festival of the sun, and for it 00:20:52.35\00:20:58.92 was the definite Christian policy to take over the pagan 00:20:58.95\00:21:01.82 festivals to endear themselves to the people by tradition, 00:21:01.86\00:21:06.83 and to give them Christian significance." 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.03 They just began to say, "Well, let's just attach 00:21:09.06\00:21:10.67 a Christian name to it, and bring it all in." 00:21:10.70\00:21:13.77 "The church after changing the day of rest from the Jewish 00:21:13.80\00:21:16.30 Sabbath or the seventh day of the week to the first, and made 00:21:16.34\00:21:19.27 the third commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept 00:21:19.31\00:21:22.78 as the Lord's day." 00:21:22.81\00:21:24.58 Matter of fact, I've got a copy here of the Ten Commandments. 00:21:24.61\00:21:26.88 I stopped at a local Catholic church, and I snapped a picture. 00:21:26.92\00:21:30.45 You probably can't see it blown up, but they've reorganized 00:21:30.49\00:21:33.02 the Ten Commandments. 00:21:33.05\00:21:35.46 How do you get the Sabbath to go from the fourth 00:21:35.49\00:21:37.19 to the third commandment? 00:21:37.23\00:21:39.13 You eliminate the second commandment about idolatry. 00:21:39.16\00:21:42.76 And that's what happened here. 00:21:42.80\00:21:44.23 You'll notice the commandment about idolatry is missing. 00:21:44.27\00:21:46.43 Well, how do you keep the number ten? 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.14 Split the tenth commandment about covetousness and say 00:21:48.17\00:21:50.41 don't covet your neighbor's wife, that's one. 00:21:50.44\00:21:52.34 Don't covet your neighbor's house, that's the other one. 00:21:52.37\00:21:54.91 And so, they changed the times and laws. 00:21:54.94\00:21:58.51 Baptist manual written by Dr. Edward T. Hitchcock. 00:21:58.55\00:22:02.25 "There is no scriptural evidence of the change of the Sabbath 00:22:02.28\00:22:05.32 institution from the seventh to the first day of the week." 00:22:05.35\00:22:10.29 If you read from Alexander Campbell, Church of Christ, 00:22:10.33\00:22:13.86 "I do not believe that the Lord's day was changed 00:22:13.90\00:22:16.97 from the seventh to the first day." 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.93 Catholic, this is James Cardinal Gibbons, "You may read the Bible 00:22:19.97\00:22:23.91 from Genesis to Revelation, and you'll not find a single line," 00:22:23.94\00:22:28.71 that's why I opened it up to you, "authorizing 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.78 the sanctification of Sunday. 00:22:31.81\00:22:34.42 The Catholic Church for over one thousand years before the 00:22:34.45\00:22:36.95 existence of a Protestant, by virtue of her divine mission, 00:22:36.99\00:22:40.72 changed the day from Saturday to Sunday." 00:22:40.76\00:22:44.69 It was done through edicts of the church, 00:22:44.73\00:22:46.56 not through the commandments of Christ. 00:22:46.59\00:22:48.63 It is a manmade tradition that started as a practice 00:22:48.66\00:22:53.00 that was popular, and they finally made it official. 00:22:53.03\00:22:56.81 Episcopal, "Is there any command in the New Testament to 00:22:56.84\00:23:01.71 change the day of the weekly rest from Saturday to Sunday? 00:24:01.84\00:24:03.64 I didn't know this before, but now I know it. 00:24:03.67\00:24:06.74 Now what do I do?" 00:24:06.78\00:24:09.14 You know, I heard years ago about a man that, in England, 00:24:09.18\00:24:12.48 this is like a couple of hundred years ago, he had a yardage shop 00:24:12.51\00:24:15.52 where they sold fabric. 00:24:15.55\00:24:17.49 And in his shop, he had a table where he would unfold 00:24:17.52\00:24:19.85 the fabric, and he'd measure it, and then he'd cut it, 00:24:19.89\00:24:22.22 and sell it to the customers. 00:24:22.26\00:24:24.69 And after--and he inherited this shop from his father 00:24:24.73\00:24:26.76 and his grandfather. 00:24:26.80\00:24:28.16 One day, a customer came back in and said, "You know, 00:24:28.20\00:24:29.90 I was very precise in how much I ordered. 00:24:29.93\00:24:32.33 I got back to make my pillows and curtains, 00:24:32.37\00:24:34.84 and I realized that you actually sold me short." 00:24:34.87\00:24:39.17 Well, this man who owned the yardage shop was 00:24:39.21\00:24:41.04 an honest Christian, a very honest man. 00:24:41.08\00:24:43.01 He'd never been accused of that. 00:24:43.04\00:24:44.41 He said, "Well, let's check it." 00:24:44.45\00:24:45.75 And he took the fabric, he laid it out, and it was--he said, 00:24:45.78\00:24:48.52 "Look, it's right--it's right where it's supposed to be. 00:24:48.55\00:24:50.95 You ordered 3 yards, here they are." 00:24:50.99\00:24:53.72 And the guy said, "Let me get a national tape measure 00:24:53.76\00:24:56.83 and bring it in." 00:24:56.86\00:24:58.46 He brought and he measured it, it was 3 inches short. 00:24:58.49\00:25:01.46 And the man checked and he looked at his table, his table 00:25:01.50\00:25:03.47 was 3 inches short. 00:25:03.50\00:25:05.27 And he'd been selling people 3 inches short for years. 00:25:05.30\00:25:08.64 Now, you've got to understand, many years ago in England, 00:25:08.67\00:25:11.64 the measurements would change. 00:25:11.67\00:25:14.91 The inch was the distance on the king's thumb. 00:25:14.94\00:25:18.71 The foot was the length of the king's foot. 00:25:18.75\00:25:21.58 And as they went from one monarchy to another, sometimes 00:25:21.62\00:25:23.92 these standards--the knuckle, the knuckle, Karen's correcting 00:25:23.95\00:25:29.02 me, not the whole thumb, the knuckle, yeah. 00:25:29.06\00:25:32.06 And so--and so, all these measurements, 00:25:32.09\00:25:34.46 the span and--you know, in the Bible, it says a cubit. 00:25:34.50\00:25:36.93 That was a measurement here. 00:25:36.97\00:25:38.97 And so, these things would change from one monarchy 00:25:39.00\00:25:41.17 to the other, and he was going by an old standard. 00:25:41.20\00:25:44.61 Any of you ever gone from the metric to the standard 00:25:44.64\00:25:46.44 and messed it up? 00:25:46.47\00:25:49.98 Now, that man was an honest man. 00:25:50.01\00:25:51.61 He had no idea that, for years, 00:25:51.65\00:25:53.15 he had been selling people short. 00:25:53.18\00:25:55.82 No one had ever called him on it because 00:25:55.85\00:25:57.19 it was just a little bit. 00:25:57.22\00:25:58.92 Now, here's the question. 00:25:58.95\00:26:00.52 If he continues to use that table measurement, 00:26:00.56\00:26:04.66 is he still an honest man? 00:26:04.69\00:26:08.20 There's a lot of godly people that go to church on Sunday, 00:26:08.23\00:26:11.73 they don't know. 00:26:11.77\00:26:13.80 God winks at their ignorance. 00:26:13.84\00:26:15.14 They love the Lord, they're Spirit-filled, 00:26:15.17\00:26:16.67 they're doing wonderful things. 00:26:16.71\00:26:18.64 Karen and I today to the Billy Graham library, and just saw 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.48 tremendous ministry happening. 00:26:20.51\00:26:23.91 And so, we don't question that. 00:26:23.95\00:26:25.31 We believe we have brothers and sisters in Christ 00:26:25.35\00:26:27.35 that maybe don't know these things. 00:26:27.38\00:26:29.68 Sin is knowing to do good and not doing it. 00:26:29.72\00:26:33.56 The Bible says if we continue to sin willfully, Hebrews 10:26, 00:26:33.59\00:26:37.43 if we continue to sin willfully after we've received 00:26:37.46\00:26:40.36 the knowledge of the truth, there remains no sacrifice 00:26:40.40\00:26:44.50 for sin, but a certain fearful looking forward 00:26:44.53\00:26:46.94 to of judgment and fiery indignation. 00:26:46.97\00:26:49.74 So, sin is when you know God's will, and you say, 00:26:49.77\00:26:52.34 "I don't want to do your will. 00:26:52.37\00:26:54.44 I'd rather do my own thing. 00:26:54.48\00:26:55.64 I want to do what's convenient, I want to do what's popular." 00:26:55.68\00:26:58.58 And I know, friends, some of you are hearing this 00:26:58.61\00:27:00.32 for the first time. 00:27:00.35\00:27:01.92 And if there is a struggle going on in your heart, I want to just 00:27:01.95\00:27:03.59 plead with you, and I'm going to pray for you. 00:27:03.62\00:27:07.52 Do you want to know what the Bible says? 00:27:07.56\00:27:09.99 You find it in the Word. 00:27:10.03\00:27:11.33 Do you want to please Jesus? 00:27:11.36\00:27:13.40 If you're waiting to please your friends, your family, 00:27:13.43\00:27:15.73 your tradition, your church, you're never going 00:27:15.76\00:27:19.50 to make anyone happy. 00:27:19.53\00:27:21.14 You've got to make God first, 00:27:21.17\00:27:22.67 "Seek ye first the kingdom of God." 00:27:22.70\00:27:24.41 And just be honest. 00:27:24.44\00:27:25.91 Say, "Lord, first and foremost, I want to know, 00:27:25.94\00:27:28.18 what do you want me to do?" 00:27:28.21\00:27:30.35 female: Amazing Facts has impacted my life. 00:27:30.95\00:27:33.11 male: I just praise God for Amazing Facts. 00:27:33.15\00:27:35.28 male: Amazing Facts actually did have an impact on my life. 00:27:35.32\00:27:37.92 male: This whole process of getting to where I am today. 00:27:37.95\00:27:42.99 female: I began reading the Bible-- 00:27:43.02\00:27:45.06 female: I got baptized. 00:27:45.09\00:27:47.03 male: I realized that there had to be more to life. 00:27:47.10\00:27:49.53 female: God is really doing this. 00:27:49.56\00:27:51.50 male: The life that he's given me. 00:27:51.53\00:27:53.27 male: This message was so powerful. 00:27:53.30\00:27:55.40 announcer: Amazing Facts, more than 45 years 00:27:55.44\00:27:59.21 of proclaiming God's message around the world. 00:27:59.24\00:28:02.31 male: And then the logo pops across, 00:28:02.34\00:28:04.48 "Amazing Facts Presents." 00:28:04.51\00:28:06.35 I've listened to a lot of different ministers, but this 00:28:06.38\00:28:08.62 was the first time that he's actually saying something 00:28:08.65\00:28:11.52 where I had to grab my Bible and actually pick it up, 00:28:11.55\00:28:14.76 and, "I never heard this before. 00:28:14.79\00:28:16.99 Let me look through and find this." 00:28:17.03\00:28:18.76 Then I just couldn't get enough. 00:28:18.79\00:28:20.36 male: And so, I started doing Bible studies. 00:28:20.40\00:28:22.16 Every single one of these guys started being changed, 00:28:22.20\00:28:25.67 including myself. 00:28:25.70\00:28:27.37 female: My question was, why did that happen to me, God? 00:28:27.40\00:28:30.47 The Lord was able to reach out, and I actually saw him 00:28:30.51\00:28:33.68 as a Father. 00:28:33.71\00:28:35.28 female: I lost everything. 00:28:35.31\00:28:36.75 And that was when I realized that it was 00:28:36.78\00:28:38.75 God missing in my life. 00:28:38.78\00:28:40.48 male: I went to a prophecy seminar, which knocked me out. 00:28:40.52\00:28:44.05 This message was so powerful and so irrefutable, 00:28:44.09\00:28:47.82 and I just went, "This is real.
