00:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
00:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry. 00:06 announcer: Coming to you from New York City, at the historic 00:10 Manhattan Center with your host Doug Batchelor, join this 00:14 exciting journey of discovery as we learn the truth about 00:17 Bible prophecy. 00:19 Explore the timeless wisdom of God's Word and see how it 00:23 relates to our lives today. 00:25 Stay tuned, your "Amazing Facts" adventure begins now. 00:30 Doug Batchelor: Tonight's study, I think, you're going to find to 00:32 be a great blessing, but I always like to begin with an 00:36 amazing fact. 00:38 You know, the world record for many years regarding the person 00:41 who had stayed awake the longest under a measured experiment 00:47 without sleep was Randy Gardner. 00:50 In 1963, he went for 11 days and 24 minutes without sleep. 00:58 After several days in the experiment, Gardner displayed 01:01 increasing cognitive dysfunction and problems with concentration, 01:05 moodiness, memory, paranoia, hallucinations. 01:09 His record since was broken multiple times. 01:12 The last time it was Robert McDonald, he went 18 days and 21 01:16 hours without sleeping. 01:20 He did it all at Starbucks. 01:22 No, I made that up, that's not true. 01:26 But you know, since then, in 1997, Guinness World Records 01:30 refused to accept any new attempts for health and 01:34 safety reasons. 01:36 For decades after his first experiments, Randy Gardner 01:40 struggled with severe insomnia, 01:42 it permanently damaged him. 01:46 People need rest. 01:49 Our lesson tonight is about rest and prophecy and how all of it 01:56 ties together. 01:58 Now, we're going to be talking about one of the commandments 02:02 tonight, in particular, the fourth commandment dealing with 02:05 the subject of the Sabbath. 02:06 And you might be thinking, "Pastor Doug, how in the world 02:09 does that fit into a prophecy seminar?" 02:12 Follow me very carefully. 02:15 If you read in Revelation chapter 13, it tells us that 02:19 this beast power makes a law that whoever does not worship 02:24 the image of the beast should be killed. 02:27 Although that would be a problem for God's people because the 02:30 Bible is pretty clear in the Ten Commandments, it says in the 02:33 second commandment, "You shall not make unto you any graven 02:35 images, the likeness of anything in the heaven above, or the 02:38 earth beneath, or the water under the earth, and bow down 02:41 yourself to them and serve them: for I the LORD Your God am a 02:44 jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the 02:47 children unto the third and fourth generation of them that 02:50 hate Me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, 02:55 and keep My commandments." 02:57 Notice, "love Me and keep My commandments." 02:59 There's a commandment that says don't worship images. 03:02 You may remember in the book of Daniel chapter 3, King 03:07 Nebuchadnezzar told everybody to bow down and worship the image 03:09 that he made or be killed, Revelation is drawing from that. 03:15 But Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they said, "We ought 03:20 to obey God rather than men. 03:23 We will not break God's commandment, even if it's a 03:26 government commandment." 03:28 You look in Daniel chapter 6, the king of Persia, Darius, made 03:32 a law that said, you're not to pray to any God except the king 03:36 for 30 days. 03:38 Well, that's a problem for God's people because the first 03:40 commandment, who knows? 03:43 Thou shalt not ma--have other gods before Me. 03:46 Actually, the first commandment says, "And the Lord God spoke 03:49 all these words, saying: 'I am the LORD your God, that brought 03:52 you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 03:54 You shall not have other gods before Me."' 03:58 Daniel said, "I can't have another god before my God," and 04:02 he went to the lions' den and God delivered him. 04:05 It was a government law, worldwide law, this empire. 04:10 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego went to the fiery furnace, and 04:13 God delivered them. 04:15 In the last days, the devil is going to do the same 04:17 thing again. 04:18 Have you read the book of Esther? 04:20 There was a law made to exterminate all of God's people 04:23 because Mordecai would not bow down and worship Haman, because 04:27 it broke the commandments of God. 04:31 The devil is going to do the same thing. 04:33 See, does everyone here know the devil wants you to sin? 04:36 That's why he tempts us. 04:37 What is sin? 04:39 The transgression of God's law. 04:41 But what the devil's going to do in the last days, he's going to 04:43 be very sneaky. 04:44 He is going to create a law and it's going to be requiring 04:48 people to break the law of God, but it's going to seem like 04:51 they're obeying. 04:53 And he's going to look through the Ten Commandments and he's 04:55 going to say, "Can I make a law that tells everybody to lie? 04:59 That's going to be hard to sell. 05:00 Everybody to murder? 05:02 That won't work. 05:03 What if I tell everybody, remember the Sabbath day, but 05:09 don't do it on the seventh day, do it a different day, just 05:13 change it a little bit?" 05:15 He's very clever. 05:18 And a lot of people are going to go, 05:19 "What difference does it make? 05:21 It's a little thing." 05:23 So follow me, and I think you're going to understand why this is 05:26 going to be an issue in prophecy in the last days. 05:29 Question number 1, we're going to our lesson, did God make the 05:34 Sabbath only for Israelites? 05:37 What does the Bible say? 05:39 "He said unto them, 'The Sabbath was made for the Jew,'" that's 05:45 not what it says. 05:47 This is on the seventh day of creation. 05:51 God made man in six days--on the sixth day, made the world in 05:55 six days. 05:56 Then after He made man, and the word here in Greek is 05:59 "anthropos," you've heard of anthropology, talking about 06:02 humanity, not just one race of people. 06:06 Jesus said the Sabbath was made for humans. 06:09 How many here are related to Adam? 06:13 Then you fit, the Sabbath was made for mankind, humanity, not 06:18 man for the Sabbath. 06:20 God did not make the Sabbath and then make man to serve the 06:22 Sabbath, He made man and then made Sabbath to be a blessing to 06:25 man. 06:26 See how that works? 06:28 And you read in Exodus 23, verse 12: "Six days you shall do your 06:33 work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and 06:37 your donkey may rest," and He says, "and your servant also and 06:42 the son of your female servant and that your stranger may be," 06:45 what's the word? 06:47 "Refreshed." 06:48 Now, do only Jews need refreshment, or did the Lord 06:52 also include even animals in this commandment? 06:56 Does God even care about creatures? 06:59 So, do people need rest? 07:02 Yeah, when the Lord said the Sabbath was made for man, He 07:05 meant for the human race, people need rest. 07:09 How many people are struggling with stress-related disease? 07:14 Some of you out there, struggling with stress. 07:18 When did God establish the Sabbath? 07:22 Answer, "Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of 07:25 them, were finished. 07:26 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and 07:32 He rested." 07:34 Man is made in the image of God, we follow His example, He rested 07:37 as an example for us. 07:39 He rested on what day? 07:41 "The seventh day from all His work which He had done." 07:43 And I'm going to continue, it goes on to say, "and God blessed 07:47 the seventh day." 07:49 You know, right here in the beginning of the Bible, a number 07:51 is mentioned three times, seven, seven, seven, first book 07:57 of the Bible. 07:58 Go to Revelation, the end of the Bible, there's another number 08:00 mentioned three times, six, six, six. 08:05 Seven is the perfect number of God and worship of God. 08:09 Six is the day that man was created, it's the number of man 08:13 and man-made worship, and this is a battle for worship that 08:18 you're going to see going on all through the Bible. 08:21 Question number three, how has God demonstrated the importance 08:25 of the holy Sabbath? 08:27 If you have your Bible, you'll not only find this in Exodus 08:29 chapter 20, verse 8, it's also in Deuteronomy chapter 5. 08:34 You can find the Ten Commandments and you'll find 08:37 them in partial places, several places. 08:39 In Exodus chapter 20 verse 8, it is the longest of the Ten 08:43 Commandments, it's the only commandment that begins with the 08:46 word remember, and it is in the middle of God's law. 08:50 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 08:53 Six days you shall labor and do all of your work, but the 08:57 seventh day is the Sabbath of the" Jews. 09:01 That's not what it says, "seventh day is the Sabbath of 09:04 the LORD your God. 09:06 In it you shall not do any work: you, nor your son, nor your 09:09 daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor 09:13 your cattle, nor the stranger within your gates. 09:16 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and 09:20 the sea, and all that is in them, and He rested the 09:23 seventh day. 09:25 Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." 09:29 This is what you call the fourth commandment. 09:32 Now, when God writes something in stone, how important is it? 09:37 I want you to think about what God did when He created the 09:39 Sabbath commandment. 09:41 Matter of fact, we're going to put it up here on the screen 09:43 here just as a little visual so that you can all see this. 09:47 God had the Ten Commandments, were they written on paper, 09:53 Silly Putty, or stone? 09:58 You want a little amazing fact, you know that old movie "The Ten 10:01 Commandments" by Cecil B. DeMille? 10:03 My mother was in that movie, it's a very small part. 10:07 When I watched it with the kids, I'd say, "There goes grandma," 10:11 but she was in the movie. 10:13 And he said, "If you will not live by the law, you will die by 10:15 the law," and he throws the commandments down. 10:17 It's true that he threw it down and broke it. 10:19 You know what God said, "Come back up, I'm going to give it to 10:23 you again." 10:25 He spoke it with His own voice, He wrote it with His own finger 10:29 to indicate the permanence of it. 10:33 And as I mentioned, it's the longest of the Ten Commandments. 10:36 Now, it's amazing to me that I can go to almost any church in 10:42 New York City--and I want to reiterate, there are good 10:46 Christian people in many denominations, y'all listening? 10:49 I used to teach Sunday school in a Methodist church, I used to 10:53 attend Pentecostal Church, Church of God, Four 10:56 Square, Baptist. 10:58 I--I've been in many different churches, John and I can tell 11:02 you some interesting stories of churches that we've been in and 11:05 visited, and there are good people in many 11:08 different churches. 11:09 I'm not here to condemn, is that clear? 11:12 I want to find out, what does the Bible say? 11:14 I could go to virtually any church in town and the pastor 11:18 would say, "Well, preach what's on your heart." 11:20 I could preach on marriage and not committing adultery, and 11:23 people would squirm, but they'd say amen, right? 11:28 And I could preach on honoring your father and mother, amen. 11:33 I could preach on do not steal, amen, do not covet. 11:38 I--you go through the Ten Commandments, amen, amen. 11:41 You preached on idolatry, some people in some churches would be 11:44 a little uncomfortable with that because there's idols in 11:47 some churches. 11:50 But then I say, "And remember the Sabbath day, to keep it 11:54 holy" and people say, "Pastor Doug, you're putting these 11:57 people under bondage, that is legalism." 12:01 What happened? 12:03 I was doing a seminar like this one time, I talked about this 12:06 subject, and a pastor was in the audience and he stood up and 12:09 interrupted me. 12:11 And I could tell he was rather agitated because his ears were 12:14 red, and he said, "Brother Doug--" small town, he knew who 12:18 I was. 12:19 He said, "You're putting these people under a bondage 12:22 of works." 12:24 I said, "Wait a second, Pastor." 12:26 I said, "I'm telling them to keep the Sabbath, I'm 12:28 encouraging them to rest. 12:30 You're telling them don't keep the Sabbath, you're encouraging 12:32 them to work." 12:35 And he said--I said, "Do you think God wants us to keep the 12:38 Ten Commandments?" 12:39 He said, "No," and then some of his members were there and they 12:43 said, "Huh?" 12:45 And he said, "Well, yes," but he knew that would include the 12:50 fourth commandment, he said, "Nine of them." 12:54 That's what he said. 12:55 I said, "So you're telling me the one commandment that we're 12:59 supposed to forget is the only commandment that begins with the 13:02 word remember." 13:05 Maybe God said remember because He knew there was a risk that we 13:08 would forget that commandment. 13:11 God's Word is eternal. 13:14 Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, My word will not 13:17 pass away." 13:18 Jesus said, "Think not that I have come to destroy the law. 13:21 I have not come to destroy, but to fulfill." 13:23 He said, "Whosoever therefore will break one of the least of 13:26 these commandments," these are the words of Jesus, "and teach 13:29 men so, he will be spoken of as least in the kingdom of heaven: 13:33 but whoever will do and teach them will be great in the 13:36 kingdom of heaven." 13:38 So why am I teaching it? 13:39 Because Jesus told me to, you take that up with Him. 13:43 This is His law, Christ kept the law of God, and the devil's 13:47 going to use this as a special test and attack in the 13:50 last days. 13:51 Now, just use common sense, do people need rest today? 13:56 Do you realize that we are living at the time in the 13:59 history of humanity where more people are dying from stress 14:02 than all of history combined? 14:05 The five top selling medications are stress-related. 14:11 Chronic stress is linked to the six leading causes of death, 14:16 including heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, 14:19 cirrhosis of the liver, suicide, according to the American 14:23 Psychological Association. 14:25 And you know, things started changing back when Thomas Edison 14:29 installed electric lights in New York City. 14:33 People used to go to sleep when the sun went down. 14:36 I mean, they might have the kerosene lamp, but, you know, 14:38 that was expensive. 14:39 And now because of artificial light, people are up all the 14:43 time and they don't rest and they work and they work, and now 14:46 we got our work devices in front of us all the time and it is a 14:51 stressed out world. 14:54 God said if we would take time every week and rest during the 15:00 time he's blessed, it would lengthen your life. 15:03 Let me tell you something in case you didn't know this. 15:05 How many of you have heard of something called the blue zones? 15:10 Let me see your hands. 15:12 National Geographic did a study--and they are not a 15:14 religious organization. 15:16 National Geographic did a study, and then there have been several 15:20 programs on it. 15:21 Individuals went around the world, they studied--there were 15:24 pockets of people around the world that lived longer. 15:29 It was very common for them to live to be over 100 years of 15:31 age, places like Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia in the Mediterranean, 15:38 and you know what the third place was? 15:41 Loma Linda, California, and they thought, why Loma 15:45 Linda, California? 15:46 They said, oh, they got a Seventh Day Adventist hospital 15:49 there, and it's a Seventh Day Adventist community and the 15:52 people are keeping the Sabbath, and they are often living to 15:55 over 100 years of age because they rest every week. 15:58 Not to mention a lot of them are vegetarians, but the Sabbath had 16:02 a lot to do with their longevity. 16:05 Jesus said, "Come unto Me," Matthew 11, "and I'll give 16:08 you" what? 16:09 "Rest," Jesus wants us to experience that rest, and the 16:15 devil is robbing the culture of that peace and rest. 16:18 By the way, when Moses came and he told the Pharaoh, "Let My 16:24 people go," before Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, it says 16:28 he met--Moses came, he met with the elders. 16:31 You find this in Exodus chapter 5, I believe. 16:34 He met with the elders of Israel. 16:36 He says, "The LORD Jehovah has met with us and told us He's 16:38 going to deliver us, but we need to return to God, we need to 16:42 recommit ourselves, we're wandering from the commandments 16:44 of God. 16:45 The Israelites are worshiping Egyptian idols, and we're 16:48 forgetting to rest on the Sabbath day." 16:51 That's why when Moses goes to the Pharaoh, Pharaoh said to 16:55 Moses, "I've heard what you're up to, you are making the people 16:59 to rest." 17:00 You know what the word is in Hebrew? 17:02 Moses says, "You are causing the people to Shabbat," that's what 17:05 it says. 17:07 He said, "I'm not going to let you rest. 17:10 In fact, I'm going to stop giving you straw for your 17:13 bricks, you're going to have to gather your own straw, and I'm 17:16 going to increase your workload." 17:18 Moses is Christ, He says, "Let My people go." 17:20 The Pharaoh is the devil, he says, "Work, work, work." 17:24 The devil wants us to be so busy with the cares of this life, 17:27 even good things, you can work too much. 17:30 Jesus said, "Beware lest your heart be overcharged with 17:33 eating and drinking and the cares of this life, so that the 17:36 Second Coming overtakes you unaware." 17:40 The devil doesn't want us to rest. 17:43 Do you know what it says about those who have the mark of 17:44 the beast? 17:46 They have no rest. 17:49 This is a Bible prophecy subject, friends, can you 17:52 see that? 17:53 On what two precious things does God say the Sabbath is a sign? 17:58 Answer, Exodus 31:17: "It [the Sabbath] 18:02 is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for 18:06 in six days the LORD made," what's it say? 18:10 "The LORD made the heavens and the earth." 18:13 Now, did He just do that for the Jewish people or is that a sign 18:16 for all people to believe the Word of God that He is 18:18 the Creator? 18:20 Would you agree with me that a lot of people in the world no 18:23 longer believe that God created? 18:26 They think we've all evolved from lower forms of life. 18:30 I used to believe that, now I can't believe I used to 18:33 believe that. 18:34 Because life is so complex, the idea that the complexity of life 18:38 happened by accident is really absurd. 18:41 You don't get organization and design and interworking system 18:46 that I--did you know that they've studied one cell of a 18:52 human being, one single cell of a human being now with an 18:57 electron microscope? 18:59 And they've come to the conclusion there are more 19:02 machines and more activity and more interworking systems in a 19:06 single cell of life than--this is the illustration, I did not 19:09 invent it--the doctors are saying there is more activity in 19:13 a single cell of life than New York City at rush hour. 19:20 How could that ever happen by accident? 19:23 We are fearfully and wonderfully made. 19:26 Every Sabbath day we are remembering that we are a 19:28 creation of God, made in the image of God. 19:32 And you know, one reason I think that so many young people are 19:34 misbehaving and destroying themselves, when we started 19:38 teaching that we all evolved from monkeys, the suicide rate 19:41 shot up, they lost the purpose of life. 19:46 When you tell young people there's a God, He's got a 19:48 purpose for you, you are created in His image, that's a whole 19:51 different destiny for young people. 19:54 So God says one reason for the Sabbath is we remember He 19:58 created us, amen? 20:01 It's a miracle, it's a marvel. 20:03 Every Sabbath day we remind ourselves that He is our 20:06 Creator, and you know what else that means? 20:09 He's the boss. 20:12 He is the Creator, we are the creation. 20:14 He makes the rules, we follow. 20:17 What else does the Bible say the Sabbath is a sign of? 20:20 Ezekiel 20, verse 12: "Moreover I gave them My Sabbaths, to be 20:24 a sign." 20:26 Now, I want to stop before I even finish this. 20:29 You know, in Revelation, what do people get in the forehead? 20:38 Mark, what's it called? 20:42 Some are saying mark, some are saying seal. 20:45 Everybody thinks about the mark of the beast 20:47 in the last days in the forehead. 20:48 That's true, there is a mark of the beast in the hand or in the 20:51 forehead, but they forget that the righteous also gets 20:54 something in the forehead, it's the seal of God, and that word 20:58 is a sign, God places a sign. 21:02 Look what it says here, "Moreover I gave them my 21:04 Sabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them, that they 21:08 might know." 21:10 The Bible says eternal life is knowing Jesus, "that they might 21:13 know that I am the one who," what? 21:15 "I sanctify them," that means I make them holy. 21:21 Now think about this, friends, if I were to ask you right now, 21:26 where on the planet is the Holy Land, what would you say? 21:31 Israel, sure, right answer, that's what most people would 21:34 say, right? 21:35 Muslims, Jews, Christians, we call it the Holy Land. 21:39 If I were to say, where in the Holy Land--what do you call the 21:42 holy city? 21:44 Jerusalem, right answer. 21:47 It gets a little harder, stay with me. 21:49 If I were to say, where in Jerusalem is the Holy Mount, 21:53 what's it called? 21:55 Mount Moriah, sometimes called Mount Zion. 21:59 And what is on the Holy Mount? 22:01 The holy temple. 22:04 And in the holy temple, when you first enter the first apartment, 22:09 it's called the what? 22:11 The holy place, and then after you leave the holy place, you go 22:16 into the inner sanctum, it is called the what? 22:20 The holy of holies or the most holy place, and why is it called 22:25 the most holy place, there's only one thing in the room? 22:30 The holy ark of the covenant, right? 22:34 And what is in the holy ark of the covenant? 22:37 The holy law of God, written by a holy God with His finger. 22:43 And in the holy law, you find the word holy one time, 22:49 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy," you know why? 22:55 Because God is love. 22:59 How do you experience love without time? 23:06 You show me a couple that's having problems in their 23:08 relationship and someone's going to say, "We don't spend any 23:10 time together." 23:12 And they're not talking about being in the same house, Karen 23:15 will sometimes say to me--I know you've never had these 23:17 conversations in your family. 23:20 She'll say, "Doug, we're not spending time together." 23:22 I'll say, "I was home all day yesterday." 23:23 She says, "Yeah, you were in your office." 23:25 I'll say, "Yeah, but I texted you." 23:29 She's, "No! 23:30 What about our date nights, you know? 23:33 What about quality time?" 23:36 You ever heard that? 23:37 God says, "I love you, I want to walk and talk with you in 23:42 the garden." 23:43 God came looking for Adam and Eve in the garden, they ran from 23:46 God because they were naked and they sinned. 23:47 God didn't run from us, He wants holy time with us. 23:53 The devil does not want us to have a holy time with God 23:56 because then you'll know Him, then you'll love Him, then 23:57 you'll serve Him, so he attacks this commandment because if you 24:03 destroy the time, you destroy the relationship. 24:06 Does that make sense? 24:08 That's why it is very important to God and to His people. 24:11 And in the last days, God's people are going to return to 24:15 the faith that was once delivered to the saints, we're 24:19 going to all come back to Bible religion, amen?
