- [Narrator #1] This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.23\00:00:03.67 by the Friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.70\00:00:06.60 (gentle instrumental music) 00:00:07.57\00:00:09.70 - Did you know, most baby mammals, 00:00:09.74\00:00:11.47 birds, and even some fish instinctively identify 00:00:11.51\00:00:15.11 and bond with their parents 00:00:15.14\00:00:16.88 in the very early stages of their lives? 00:00:16.91\00:00:19.31 But if the parents aren't available, 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.18 well, some strange things can happen. 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.82 In the 1930s, Austrian zoologist, 00:00:23.85\00:00:26.52 Konrad Lorenz, conducted some of the first experiments 00:00:26.55\00:00:30.26 on the imprinting of precocial birds, 00:00:30.29\00:00:33.26 those that leave the nest soon after hatching. 00:00:33.29\00:00:36.23 When he presented himself to a newly hatched group 00:00:36.26\00:00:38.97 of mallard ducklings and he quacked softly to them, 00:00:39.00\00:00:42.30 they recognized him as their mother, 00:00:42.34\00:00:44.17 and consequently followed him everywhere. 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.24 Cross species imprinting has been observed many times, 00:00:47.28\00:00:51.01 even among some species that are naturally enemies, 00:00:51.05\00:00:54.18 like cats and squirrels, or lions and antelope. 00:00:54.22\00:00:57.35 Did you know that in a spiritual sense, 00:00:57.39\00:00:59.55 we humans can also be imprinted? 00:00:59.59\00:01:02.26 We tend to become like what we look at, 00:01:02.29\00:01:05.59 and that's why it's so important 00:01:05.63\00:01:07.03 that we fix our eyes on Jesus. 00:01:07.10\00:01:09.76 So join me today as we explore the Bible facts 00:01:09.80\00:01:13.23 about how we can be imprinted by our Heavenly Father 00:01:13.27\00:01:16.84 and have a life-changing experience with Jesus. 00:01:16.87\00:01:20.34 (gentle instrumental music) 00:01:20.38\00:01:23.58 We've come to learn that prophecy in the Bible is more 00:01:23.61\00:01:26.45 than just the books of Zachariah, and Daniel, 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.68 and Revelation, or Ezekiel. 00:01:29.72\00:01:31.82 Prophecy encompasses the message of the prophets 00:01:31.85\00:01:36.06 and the message of the prophets can be found 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.59 all through the Bible, a number of books. 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.13 Our study tonight is dealing 00:01:41.16\00:01:42.80 with the subject of the king's ambassador. 00:01:42.83\00:01:46.63 And I really could say the king's ambassador 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.64 is because he's calling all of us to be ambassadors for him. 00:01:48.67\00:01:53.21 We're thinking more particularly of someone 00:01:53.24\00:01:56.18 who was called by Jesus the greatest of the prophets. 00:01:56.21\00:02:00.25 You know who that is? 00:02:00.28\00:02:01.95 John the Baptist. 00:02:01.98\00:02:03.28 He said, "Among those born among women 00:02:03.32\00:02:04.89 there is no prophet like John the Baptist." 00:02:04.92\00:02:08.62 You know if you look in Matthew, 00:02:08.66\00:02:11.29 you can read here in Matthew 3, 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.86 it tells us about John the Baptist. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.66 I'm going to read the first few verses for you. 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.83 "In those days John the Baptist came preaching 00:02:17.87\00:02:20.80 in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.81 repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:02:23.84\00:02:27.28 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah 00:02:27.31\00:02:30.28 saying, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:02:30.31\00:02:34.38 prepare the way of the Lord, make his path straight." 00:02:34.42\00:02:38.39 Now often when kings traveled in Bible times, 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.09 they had a team that would go before 'em. 00:02:42.12\00:02:45.33 A very powerful, wealthy king would have a big team. 00:02:47.03\00:02:50.37 And when the king was traveling they would inspect the road, 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.17 not only for spies and booby traps, 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.80 but they would prepare the road. 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.14 They would take the rocks out of the road. 00:02:57.17\00:02:58.87 If there were low spots and potholes, they'd fill them in. 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.34 If there were high spots, they'd cut them down, 00:03:01.38\00:03:04.31 and they'd smooth the path. 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.01 And the Bible tells us in Isaiah 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.58 that this was the work of this messenger. 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.72 He was going to cut down the high places 00:03:10.75\00:03:13.09 and fill in the low places. 00:03:13.12\00:03:15.22 And someone said, you know, 00:03:15.26\00:03:16.56 that's sort of the work of a pastor, 00:03:16.59\00:03:19.23 is that he is supposed to comfort those 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.66 who are humbling themselves, that are unhappy, 00:03:21.70\00:03:24.43 that are struggling, 00:03:24.47\00:03:26.40 and he's supposed to take those that are too comfortable 00:03:26.43\00:03:28.24 and make them uncomfortable. 00:03:28.27\00:03:29.67 And so John the Baptist went out 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.11 and he would prepare the way of the Lord. 00:03:32.14\00:03:34.71 Now John himself tells us that he lived 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.55 a very holy austere life. 00:03:37.58\00:03:40.08 "John himself was clothed in camel's hair 00:03:40.12\00:03:43.22 with a leather belt around his waist. 00:03:44.39\00:03:46.15 His food was locusts and wild honey." 00:03:46.19\00:03:47.49 And we're all hoping that was carob pod. 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.72 And "Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.90 and all the region around Jordan, they went out to him." 00:03:53.93\00:03:57.57 Here's this man that some would probably ascribe 00:03:57.60\00:04:00.30 to be a maniac out there in the wilderness 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.34 by the Jordan River, he's preaching that 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.34 the Lord is coming, that they needed a repent 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.68 of their sins, they needed to turn back to God. 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.24 And the people were so moved by the Holy Spirit 00:04:09.28\00:04:11.21 that not one or two came, but it seems like everybody 00:04:11.25\00:04:14.22 came out to hear this man preaching 00:04:14.25\00:04:15.85 with eloquence and power. 00:04:15.88\00:04:17.62 He didn't talk like a madman, 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.22 he had great courage and great force to his speech. 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.82 "And they were baptizing them in Jordan, 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.46 confessing their sins." 00:04:25.49\00:04:27.60 And so there was this great revival that was caused 00:04:27.66\00:04:29.96 by the preaching of John, 00:04:30.00\00:04:31.30 and he was giving specific information 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.64 about how to repent and how to live holy lives to everybody. 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.37 Even the soldiers came to him 00:04:36.40\00:04:37.71 and they said, what shall we do? 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.11 And he said, do violence to no man. 00:04:40.14\00:04:42.48 And what he meant by that, 00:04:43.31\00:04:44.61 he didn't say you couldn't be a soldier, 00:04:44.65\00:04:45.95 he meant, sometimes they would rough people up 00:04:45.98\00:04:47.28 and take their property. 00:04:47.32\00:04:49.45 But he was telling everybody 00:04:49.48\00:04:51.35 what they needed to do to follow God. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.25 Now I'm going to have you jump with me to Revelation. 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.72 This is a message that goes to the world 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.46 just before Jesus comes. 00:04:57.49\00:04:59.03 We talked about the 144,000. 00:04:59.06\00:05:01.90 This is a group that has the seal of God 00:05:01.93\00:05:03.93 and we know they're preparing others who receive that seal. 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.24 "Then I looked, and behold, 00:05:08.27\00:05:09.74 a lamb standing," Revelation 14:1, 00:05:09.77\00:05:12.61 "On Mount Zion, and with him 144,000, 00:05:12.64\00:05:16.28 having his Father's name written on their foreheads. 00:05:16.31\00:05:19.28 And I heard a voice like the voice of many waters 00:05:20.48\00:05:22.82 and the voice of a loud thunder. 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.52 And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps, 00:05:24.55\00:05:27.86 and they sang as it was a new song before the throne 00:05:27.89\00:05:30.13 and before the four living creatures and the elders. 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.43 And no one could learn that song except the 144,000 00:05:32.46\00:05:35.76 who were redeemed from the earth." 00:05:35.80\00:05:37.40 But listen how it describes them. 00:05:37.43\00:05:39.13 "These are the ones who are not defiled with women, 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.27 for they are virgins." 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.64 What does that mean? 00:05:44.64\00:05:46.14 I've heard some people preach that and say in the last days, 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.14 all people saved need to practice virginity. 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.81 Now, you read in Revelation, 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.65 that's telling us that you get two women. 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.75 One of them is a mother of harlots, the other one is pure. 00:05:54.78\00:05:58.62 And it's saying they are not defiled with women, 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.86 talking about Babylon and her daughters, 00:06:01.89\00:06:03.56 they're not defiled with the false teachings 00:06:03.59\00:06:05.93 for they are pure. 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.40 That's what it's dealing with there. 00:06:07.46\00:06:09.03 It says, "They follow the lamb wherever he goes." 00:06:09.06\00:06:11.47 How many of you want to follow the lamb in heaven? 00:06:11.50\00:06:13.90 Do you know, if you want to follow him there then, 00:06:15.20\00:06:16.64 you need to follow him here now first. 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.71 "They follow the lamb wherever he goes. 00:06:19.64\00:06:21.74 These were redeemed from among men, 00:06:22.94\00:06:24.75 being the first fruits to God and the lamb." 00:06:24.78\00:06:26.98 They're not the only ones, 00:06:27.02\00:06:28.35 but it's a special group in the last days. 00:06:28.38\00:06:30.55 "And in their mouth was found no guile", 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.82 no deceit, "For they're without fault 00:06:32.85\00:06:35.16 before the throne of God." 00:06:35.19\00:06:36.69 So I think you're getting the message that John the Baptist, 00:06:36.73\00:06:39.19 who came in the spirit and power of Elijah, 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.50 the 144,000, and people that are preparing 00:06:41.53\00:06:44.53 for Christ's first coming or second coming, 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.70 he's calling them to lives of dedication and holiness. 00:06:46.74\00:06:51.24 You know, we're living in a day and an age 00:06:51.27\00:06:53.11 where it's really hard to tell Christians from apart 00:06:53.14\00:06:57.08 from everyone else in the world. 00:06:57.11\00:06:58.71 And I believe that people should know there's a difference 00:07:01.12\00:07:02.42 in the way that we conduct ourselves. 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.35 I was in a restaurant with a friend, 00:07:04.39\00:07:06.29 and the young lady that was serving our table, 00:07:06.32\00:07:09.26 as she walked away, I said to my friend, 00:07:09.29\00:07:11.83 she's a Christian. 00:07:11.86\00:07:13.76 He said, how do you know? I don't know, just her smile. 00:07:13.80\00:07:17.13 There's something about her appearance, 00:07:17.17\00:07:18.83 there's a simplicity, there's a peace. 00:07:18.87\00:07:21.50 She came back to the table, I said, 00:07:21.54\00:07:22.84 now, I don't want to embarrass you, 00:07:22.87\00:07:24.17 but are you a Christian? 00:07:24.21\00:07:25.84 And she blushed a little bit and she said, 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.18 well, yes I am, 00:07:27.21\00:07:28.58 I go to church, and she was clearly from her answer, 00:07:28.61\00:07:31.85 a practicing Christian. 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.18 And I don't know about you, 00:07:33.21\00:07:34.52 but I've been able to spot that before. 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.22 I think that you can sometimes see a difference. 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.95 People have this inner joy, they've got this competence, 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.36 they've got this peace. 00:07:41.39\00:07:42.92 And it's almost like, you know, once you are a Christian, 00:07:42.96\00:07:45.46 you've got this Holy Spirit radar 00:07:45.49\00:07:47.23 where you can spot each other. 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.13 But it shouldn't just be with Christians, 00:07:49.16\00:07:51.67 I think the world ought to see that there's a difference. 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.84 We're going to find out what the Bible says. 00:07:53.87\00:07:55.27 Was there something different about John the Baptist? 00:07:55.30\00:07:58.54 Clearly there was. 00:07:58.57\00:08:00.08 What was one secret 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.78 to John the Baptist's Spirit filled life? 00:08:01.81\00:08:05.38 If you look in Luke 3:16, "John answered and said, 00:08:05.41\00:08:09.75 I baptize you with water, but one mightier than I is coming 00:08:09.78\00:08:13.99 who's sandal strap I am not worthy to lose." 00:08:14.02\00:08:17.36 And of course here he's talking about Jesus. 00:08:17.39\00:08:19.89 One secret of his life 00:08:19.93\00:08:21.20 was you notice that he's self defacing, 00:08:21.23\00:08:22.90 there is a humility there in his life. 00:08:22.93\00:08:25.43 One of the keys for Christian 00:08:26.43\00:08:27.80 is there's going to be humility. 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.77 I think it was a C.S. Lewis that wrote in his book, 00:08:31.37\00:08:33.48 "Mere Christianity", a chapter called the great sin. 00:08:33.51\00:08:36.78 And he talks about the devil, the great sin of Lucifer 00:08:36.81\00:08:40.08 was putting himself in the position of God. 00:08:40.12\00:08:43.12 And pride is the mother of all sins. 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.89 Pride is a handle that fits every other sin. 00:08:45.92\00:08:49.12 And John the Baptist had humility, 00:08:49.16\00:08:51.06 even though he was brave, and he was bold, 00:08:51.09\00:08:52.93 and audacious for God. 00:08:52.96\00:08:54.66 He also said in John 3:30, he said, 00:08:54.73\00:08:57.70 "He", speaking of Jesus, 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.03 "He must increase, but I must decrease." 00:08:59.07\00:09:02.90 As John introduced Jesus and he said, 00:09:02.94\00:09:05.21 this is the Lamb of God. 00:09:05.24\00:09:06.64 People began to follow Jesus 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.11 and soon Jesus had more disciples than John. 00:09:08.14\00:09:10.11 And John's disciples began to resent that, 00:09:10.15\00:09:13.15 you know, there's a spirit of competition. 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.68 Hey, you know, 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.15 he's getting more disciples than you, and what's with that? 00:09:16.18\00:09:17.59 You know, you're the great prophet. 00:09:17.62\00:09:18.92 And John said, well, 00:09:18.95\00:09:20.26 this is the way it's supposed to be. 00:09:20.29\00:09:21.79 He must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:21.82\00:09:25.19 You know, that's something that all of us 00:09:25.23\00:09:26.70 should really be saying in our hearts every day. 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.23 When it comes to who is on the throne in your life, 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.90 he must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:32.93\00:09:36.17 Would you like to say that with me? 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.51 - [Together] He must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:39.54\00:09:43.51 - And every day that you walk with Jesus, 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.31 you're going to find out that it's more and more about him, 00:09:45.35\00:09:48.02 and that's where your joy comes from. 00:09:48.05\00:09:49.82 Christ said, he that seeks to save his life will lose it, 00:09:49.85\00:09:52.85 but he's willing to lose his life for my sake, 00:09:52.89\00:09:55.72 he will find it. 00:09:55.76\00:09:58.19 We take up our cross, we lose our lives, 00:09:58.23\00:09:59.53 that's when we really find our lives, 00:09:59.56\00:10:00.86 when we give it all to him. 00:10:00.90\00:10:03.30 Number two, did John the Baptist read the scriptures? 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.90 This is another example in the life of John that I think 00:10:04.93\00:10:07.74 that every believer should emulate, did he? 00:10:07.77\00:10:12.21 How do we know? 00:10:12.24\00:10:13.54 When they said, John, who are you? 00:10:13.58\00:10:14.88 This is Gospel John 1:23. 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.48 "He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:10:18.51\00:10:21.58 make straight the way of the Lord, 00:10:22.58\00:10:23.89 as the prophet Isaiah said." 00:10:23.92\00:10:25.42 Does it become clear that John read 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.52 what the prophet Isaiah said? 00:10:27.56\00:10:29.42 So just because he's living out there in the wilderness 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.89 in the desert doesn't mean he did not read the scriptures. 00:10:31.93\00:10:34.83 In fact, if you go visit Israel, 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.03 you'll find that there was a whole group 00:10:37.07\00:10:38.60 of very dedicated Jews called Essenes 00:10:38.63\00:10:41.70 that lived in the Dead Sea area, 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.64 and their whole job was writing out 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.54 and copying the scriptures. 00:10:45.57\00:10:47.64 Later when the Romans were coming to invade, 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.54 they hid a lot of them in caves. 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.08 They were discovered then as the Dead Sea Scrolls. 00:10:51.11\00:10:53.21 So there was a whole community of people that were dedicated 00:10:53.25\00:10:55.62 to the scriptures, 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.12 living just down the river from John the Baptist. 00:10:57.15\00:10:59.29 He knew his Bible, he read his Bible, 00:10:59.32\00:11:01.59 he prayed. 00:11:01.62\00:11:03.46 There are three disciplines in the Christian life 00:11:03.49\00:11:06.53 that are the keys to your success. 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.93 Now, what I'm about to say is so simple, 00:11:08.96\00:11:11.67 but it is so true. 00:11:11.70\00:11:13.84 You do these things and you will not backslide. 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.77 Read your Bible every day, 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.38 and even if you read your Bible just 15 minutes, 00:11:21.41\00:11:23.48 read your Bible 15 minutes, pray for 15 minutes, 00:11:23.51\00:11:28.15 and it might be seven minutes in the morning 00:11:28.18\00:11:31.05 and seven minutes at night, 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.92 and spend 15 minutes talking to someone else about God. 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.89 Read the Bible, talk to the Lord, 00:11:38.16\00:11:41.43 share your faith. 00:11:41.46\00:11:43.63 Number three, was John the Baptist willing 00:11:43.67\00:11:46.33 to witness for Jesus? 00:11:46.37\00:11:48.97 When he saw Jesus come to the water, he boldly said, 00:11:49.00\00:11:53.14 "Next day", John 1:29, 00:11:53.17\00:11:55.64 "Behold, the Lamb of God, 00:11:55.68\00:11:58.41 that takes away the sin of the world." 00:11:58.45\00:12:00.75 He pointed people to Christ. 00:12:00.78\00:12:02.25 If you believe in Christ, do not be ashamed of your faith. 00:12:02.28\00:12:05.25 Be bold in your faith. 00:12:05.29\00:12:06.65 John was so bold and he was so courageous 00:12:06.69\00:12:10.26 that he would not only rebuke the Pharisees for their sins, 00:12:10.29\00:12:14.20 he talked to the Roman soldiers, 00:12:14.20\00:12:15.80 he told king Herod that you shouldn't be living 00:12:15.83\00:12:18.83 with your brother's wife. 00:12:18.87\00:12:21.87 I mean, he called sin out wherever he saw it, 00:12:21.90\00:12:24.17 and he was not very popular, 00:12:24.21\00:12:25.57 it ultimately cost him his life. 00:12:25.61\00:12:27.28 Now the reason we're talking 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.48 about this message of the king's ambassadors. 00:12:30.51\00:12:32.31 The Bible tells us, last prophecy in the Old Testament, 00:12:32.35\00:12:35.68 Malachi 4, "Behold", 00:12:35.72\00:12:37.72 well first he says, this is Malachi 4:4, 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.32 "Remember the law of Moses, my servant, 00:12:40.36\00:12:42.56 which I gave unto him for all Israel 00:12:42.59\00:12:44.93 with its statutes and judgements. 00:12:44.96\00:12:46.26 Behold I send you Elijah the prophet 00:12:46.29\00:12:48.53 before the great and terrible day of the Lord." 00:12:48.56\00:12:50.20 Now the great and terrible day of the Lord 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.00 was not Jesus first coming. 00:12:52.03\00:12:53.74 That's the day of the Lord when he comes the second time. 00:12:53.77\00:12:56.54 "I will send you Elijah the prophet 00:12:56.57\00:12:58.27 before the great and terrible day of the Lord. 00:12:58.31\00:13:00.31 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, 00:13:00.34\00:13:01.91 and the hearts of the children to the fathers, 00:13:01.94\00:13:04.85 lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.18 Now this is not just talking 00:13:06.21\00:13:07.52 about there being family reconciliation. 00:13:07.55\00:13:10.89 The fathers is talking about the teachings of the fathers. 00:13:10.92\00:13:13.56 A lot of the young generation have rejected 00:13:13.59\00:13:16.26 the teachings of the fathers, but before Christ comes back, 00:13:16.29\00:13:19.53 there's going to be people turning back 00:13:19.56\00:13:21.33 to the sensible teachings of the fathers, 00:13:21.36\00:13:23.90 and the fathers will begin to make sense to the children, 00:13:23.93\00:13:27.34 and there's going to be a revival as a result of that. 00:13:27.37\00:13:29.87 (gentle instrumental music) 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.24 Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:13:31.27\00:13:32.57 In just a moment, 00:13:32.61\00:13:33.91 we'll continue with the rest of today's presentation. 00:13:33.94\00:13:35.94 Have you ever thought that life sometimes seems 00:13:37.35\00:13:39.21 to be a relentless battle just to stay ahead? 00:14:55.22\00:14:57.46 Well, when they came to John the Baptist and they said, 00:14:58.89\00:15:01.33 are you Elijah who is to come? 00:15:01.36\00:15:03.43 John the Baptist said, no. 00:15:03.47\00:15:05.47 Why did John say, no, I'm not Elijah. 00:15:05.50\00:15:07.54 And Jesus said, yes, he is. 00:15:07.57\00:15:09.87 When the Jews were asking John, are you Elijah, 00:15:09.90\00:15:12.21 they were wondering, are you Elijah reincarnated? 00:15:12.24\00:15:14.58 God does not teach reincarnation. 00:15:14.61\00:15:15.91 He said no. 00:15:15.94\00:15:17.25 They were asking a different question, 00:15:17.28\00:15:18.58 you see what I'm saying? 00:15:18.61\00:15:19.91 Jesus said, is he coming in the spirit and power of Elijah? 00:15:19.95\00:15:23.12 Yes, he did come in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:15:23.15\00:15:25.99 That's what the angel told his father, 00:15:26.02\00:15:27.66 that he would come in the spirit and the power of Elijah, 00:15:27.69\00:15:30.39 just like Elisha got the spirit and the power of Elijah. 00:15:30.43\00:15:34.23 But Jesus said, if you can bear it, 00:15:34.30\00:15:37.03 Elijah has come. 00:15:37.07\00:15:38.87 This is after John was put in prison and beheaded, 00:15:38.90\00:15:41.30 and they did unto him whatever they wanted, 00:15:41.34\00:15:43.20 and Elijah will come. 00:15:43.24\00:15:46.07 Christ was looking down to the end of time 00:15:46.11\00:15:48.94 when there's going to be a great revival movement 00:15:48.98\00:15:51.21 and people are going to return to the word of God 00:15:51.25\00:15:53.88 the way that John the Baptist brought a revival movement. 00:15:53.92\00:15:56.55 There are going to be some last day Elijahs 00:15:56.58\00:15:58.92 before Jesus comes back 00:15:58.95\00:16:00.42 that are going to be sharing this message of holiness 00:16:00.46\00:16:03.59 and living godly lives. 00:16:03.63\00:16:05.53 Number four, was the straight preaching 00:16:05.56\00:16:08.66 of John popular among the political and religious leaders? 00:16:08.70\00:16:12.47 No, and Bible tells us the Pharisees 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.94 and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, 00:16:16.97\00:16:21.91 not having been baptized by him. 00:16:21.94\00:16:24.51 It kinda makes you shudder to think, you know, 00:16:24.55\00:16:26.38 here God was calling them to repent of their sins. 00:16:26.41\00:16:28.42 They could keep their jobs, 00:16:28.45\00:16:29.75 but they needed to repent and be washed, 00:16:29.78\00:16:31.42 and baptism was part of that. 00:16:31.45\00:16:32.99 When they were rejected that, 00:16:33.02\00:16:34.72 they were rejecting the counsel 00:16:34.76\00:16:36.69 and the will of God for themselves. 00:16:37.83\00:16:39.16 And there are some of you who are listening 00:16:39.19\00:16:40.56 to the sound of my voice, you could be here, 00:16:40.60\00:16:42.26 you could be listening through 00:16:42.30\00:16:44.70 some electronic media right now, and maybe he's calling you, 00:16:44.73\00:16:48.54 if you've not given your heart to Jesus, 00:16:48.57\00:16:50.07 to repent of your sins, to be baptized and to follow him. 00:16:50.11\00:16:52.97 Listen, today if you hear his voice, 00:16:54.11\00:16:56.04 do not harden your heart, you want to follow that. 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.81 And repent of your sins, he'll give you a revival. 00:16:58.85\00:17:01.82 And then you read on the Luke 3:19, 00:17:01.85\00:17:04.72 "But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him", 00:17:04.75\00:17:07.79 by John the Baptist, 00:17:07.82\00:17:09.12 "For all of his evils that Herod had done, 00:17:09.16\00:17:11.19 he shut up John in prison." 00:17:11.23\00:17:13.53 Later, because of the the intrigue of his illicit wife, 00:17:13.56\00:17:18.33 Herodias, John the Baptist was beheaded. 00:17:19.47\00:17:22.64 And Jesus said, here he is the greatest of the prophets, 00:17:22.67\00:17:24.71 but he did not go to heaven in a fiery chariot. 00:17:24.74\00:17:27.61 You know, Jesus said, 00:17:27.64\00:17:29.31 if you're persecuted for Christ's sake, 00:17:29.34\00:17:30.65 you should rejoice. 00:17:30.68\00:17:31.98 John actually had the privilege of dying 00:17:32.01\00:17:34.48 for the sake of Christ and for the sake of the truth, 00:17:34.52\00:17:37.15 and he's going to be greatly exalted in the kingdom. 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.42 Do you believe that? 00:17:39.45\00:17:41.22 Was there a connection between John's spiritual life 00:17:41.26\00:17:43.99 and his simple diet? 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.36 You can read in Luke 1:15, "For he", 00:17:46.66\00:17:51.63 John the Baptist, "Shall drink neither wine 00:17:52.73\00:17:54.70 nor strong drink, but he will be filled 00:17:54.74\00:17:57.64 with the Holy Spirit." 00:17:57.67\00:17:59.61 You see there's a distinction between being filled with wine 00:17:59.64\00:18:03.48 and being filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:18:03.51\00:18:05.75 You've probably driven down the street 00:18:05.78\00:18:07.08 and you've seen these stores, 00:18:07.12\00:18:08.42 it says liquor, beer, and spirits. 00:18:08.45\00:18:11.65 What do they mean, spirits? 00:18:13.12\00:18:14.42 What kind of spirits? 00:18:14.46\00:18:15.79 If you drink the liquor, and the beer, 00:18:16.69\00:18:18.16 and the wine, you get spirits that come with it. 00:18:18.19\00:18:22.76 Have you noticed that before? 00:18:22.80\00:18:24.70 Yeah, and you know I'm speaking from firsthand experience, 00:18:24.73\00:18:27.77 friends, I used to drink, 00:18:27.80\00:18:29.10 I know what happens. 00:18:29.14\00:18:30.54 Says, you'll say things that you regret, 00:18:30.57\00:18:33.51 your eyes will behold strange women. 00:18:33.54\00:18:36.54 I don't know how many people have said, you know,, 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.85 I was at a party, and I had one too many, 00:18:38.88\00:18:40.88 I'm so sorry, I violated our marriage, 00:18:40.92\00:18:42.75 I wasn't thinking, 00:18:42.78\00:18:44.09 it wasn't me, it was the alcohol. 00:18:44.12\00:18:45.89 Well, you chose to drink the alcohol. 00:18:45.92\00:18:47.76 And people do, and utter, 00:18:49.32\00:18:51.26 and behave in ways that, you know, 00:18:51.29\00:18:53.56 it just takes you away from being spirit led. 00:18:53.60\00:18:57.23 John the Baptist would not drink wine or strong drink, why? 00:18:57.27\00:19:01.37 Because he wanted to be filled with a Holy Spirit. 00:19:01.40\00:19:03.14 So which spirit do you want to be filled with? 00:19:03.17\00:19:05.57 You want to be filled with the spirit of vodka, 00:19:05.61\00:19:07.38 and whiskey, and gin, wine and beer, 00:19:07.41\00:19:11.61 or do you want to be filled with the spirit of Jesus? 00:19:11.65\00:19:14.15 Why is God concerned about what we eat and what we drink? 00:19:15.55\00:19:19.39 Judges 13:7, so the angel meets with Manoah and his wife, 00:19:19.42\00:19:23.83 and he gives clear instructions on this child 00:19:23.86\00:19:26.76 they're going to have 00:19:26.80\00:19:28.06 that's going to be filled with the spirit of God. 00:19:28.10\00:19:30.37 Why would it matter what a mother 00:19:30.40\00:19:31.80 before the child is born eats and drinks? 00:19:31.83\00:19:36.14 Well you know, now they know that the mother's care 00:19:36.17\00:19:39.47 for her body while she's pregnant, 00:19:39.51\00:19:41.38 does have an impact on the child. 00:19:41.41\00:19:43.18 "Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son." 00:19:44.55\00:19:47.38 "Now drink no wine or similar," in the word there, 00:19:47.42\00:19:50.39 strong drink, "Or eat anything unclean 00:19:50.42\00:19:53.99 for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from his womb 00:19:54.02\00:19:57.53 to the day of his death." 00:19:57.56\00:19:59.06 Through his whole life he was to be dedicated to God. 00:19:59.09\00:20:00.96 Now, as we near the last days, 00:20:01.86\00:20:03.73 if we're wanting our minds to be clear, 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.53 especially when Satan has come down with great wrath 00:20:05.57\00:20:07.90 and the world is just filled 00:20:07.94\00:20:09.27 with his proliferation of deceptions, 00:20:09.30\00:20:12.47 why would we want our brains to be fuzzy 00:20:12.51\00:20:14.81 so that we can't distinguish between what's right and wrong? 00:20:14.84\00:20:17.58 Why would we want to weaken our perceptions 00:20:17.61\00:20:20.18 so that we are not able to discern 00:20:20.22\00:20:22.22 what is good and what is evil? 00:20:22.25\00:20:23.92 The real prayer of Solomon, when God said, 00:20:23.95\00:20:25.89 what do you want from me? 00:20:25.92\00:20:27.22 He said, I want wisdom, 00:20:27.26\00:20:28.86 that I might have an understanding heart 00:20:28.89\00:20:30.53 to know the difference between good and evil. 00:20:30.56\00:20:33.70 What does the Bible say about worldly behavior? 00:20:33.73\00:20:36.73 James 4:4, "Whoever therefore wants 00:20:36.77\00:20:39.57 to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." 00:20:39.60\00:20:43.81 Now, Pastor Doug, 00:20:43.84\00:20:45.24 I thought the Bible said God so loved the world. 00:20:45.27\00:20:47.28 Here it says you're supposed to love the world, 00:20:47.31\00:20:48.84 and then the Bible says, friendship with the world 00:20:48.88\00:20:51.18 is enmity with God. 00:20:51.21\00:20:52.51 Which is it, love the world or hate the world? 00:20:52.55\00:20:53.85 Well, God loves the people in the world, 00:20:53.88\00:20:55.68 and we should love the people in the world, 00:20:55.72\00:20:57.35 but worldliness is what he's saying that we should shun. 00:20:57.39\00:21:01.76 And I think we all know what that means. 00:21:01.79\00:21:03.93 Just all the distractions with the here and now. 00:21:03.96\00:21:06.09 If you're a Christian, you're thinking about eternity, 00:21:06.13\00:21:08.13 you're thinking about another world, 00:21:08.16\00:21:09.46 you're passing through this world. 00:21:09.50\00:21:11.47 Someone once said that a Christian 00:21:11.50\00:21:13.50 is something like a ship in the water. 00:21:13.54\00:21:17.37 A Christian has to learn how to be in the world 00:21:17.41\00:21:19.24 without the world being in us. 00:21:19.27\00:21:21.41 A ship belongs in the water, 00:21:22.28\00:21:24.08 but as soon as the water gets in the ship, 00:21:24.11\00:21:25.55 you've got serious problems, right? 00:21:25.58\00:21:27.32 "Come out from among them", the Bible says, 00:21:28.95\00:21:31.05 2 Corinthians 6:17, "Be separate, 00:21:31.09\00:21:33.62 says the Lord, do not touch what is unclean." 00:21:33.66\00:21:36.19 This is the New Testament, 00:21:36.22\00:21:37.53 it's not some Old Testament Levitical law. 00:21:37.56\00:21:39.69 He says, "Do not touch what is unclean 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.66 and I will receive you." 00:21:41.70\00:21:43.00 Come out, be separate, 00:21:43.03\00:21:44.33 we're to be different from the world? 00:21:44.37\00:21:45.67 We're calling people to a high 00:21:45.70\00:21:47.00 and a holy standard of following Jesus. 00:21:47.04\00:21:49.00 How can we tell them to do that 00:21:49.04\00:21:50.54 when we're living like everybody else 00:21:50.57\00:21:51.87 and nobody can tell the difference. 00:21:51.91\00:21:53.64 If anyone loves the world, Bible says, 00:21:55.04\00:21:57.55 1 John 2, "Love not the world, 00:21:57.58\00:22:00.05 neither the things that are in the world, 00:22:00.08\00:22:01.58 for if any man loves the world, 00:22:01.62\00:22:02.95 the love of the Father is not in him. 00:22:02.98\00:22:05.19 For all that's in the world, the lust of the flesh, 00:22:05.22\00:22:07.32 and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life 00:22:07.36\00:22:09.72 is not of the Father, but the world. 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.56 And the world is passing away with the lust thereof. 00:22:11.59\00:22:14.36 But he that does the will of God will abide forever." 00:22:14.36\00:22:17.60 Can you say amen? 00:22:17.63\00:22:19.27 If you love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 00:22:19.30\00:22:22.90 "Do not be conformed to this world, 00:22:22.94\00:22:25.41 but rather be transformed by the renewing of your mind, 00:22:25.44\00:22:29.31 that you might prove what is that good, and acceptable, 00:22:29.34\00:22:32.48 and perfect will of God." 00:22:32.51\00:22:34.08 Don't become like the world, don't let the world shape you. 00:22:34.12\00:22:37.12 Be shaped by the word, not the world. 00:22:37.15\00:22:40.49 The word ought to be shaping our lives. 00:22:40.52\00:22:42.72 And the renewing of your mind. 00:22:42.76\00:22:44.43 Now with that in mind, 00:22:45.46\00:22:47.23 what should a Christian choose to think about? 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.66 "Whatever things are true", 00:22:49.70\00:22:51.17 these are the things to think about. 00:22:51.20\00:22:52.70 "Whatever things are noble, 00:22:52.73\00:22:54.40 whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, 00:22:54.44\00:22:58.34 whatever things are lovely, 00:22:58.37\00:23:00.41 whatever things are of good report, 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.48 if there's any virtue and if there's anything praiseworthy, 00:23:02.51\00:23:05.88 meditate on these things." 00:23:05.91\00:23:08.38 Think about those things that are good. 00:23:08.42\00:23:11.02 Bible tells us in Psalm 101:3, 00:23:11.05\00:23:14.02 "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes." 00:23:14.06\00:23:17.59 Now, based on that standard, 00:23:17.63\00:23:19.89 what should a Christian watch? 00:23:19.93\00:23:21.40 If we believe murder is a sin, 00:23:23.77\00:23:25.87 why would we be entertained watching other people murder? 00:23:27.30\00:23:29.70 If we believe adultery is a sin, 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.18 why would we be entertained 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.01 watching other people commit adultery? 00:23:36.04\00:23:37.95 It's almost like we're enjoying the sin vicariously. 00:23:39.61\00:23:40.92 You say, no, I'd never kill, 00:23:40.95\00:23:42.42 I'd never lie, but I like this program where they lie. 00:23:42.45\00:23:44.89 I'm going to watch this, you know, "Daytime As My Stomach 00:23:45.99\00:23:48.52 Turns", whatever it's called, you know, 00:23:48.56\00:23:50.13 and they got all this intrigue, all this line, 00:23:50.16\00:23:53.50 and all this adultery, and this espionage, 00:23:53.53\00:23:55.46 and this murder, and I'm going, 00:23:55.50\00:23:57.07 wow, I wonder what's going to happen next. 00:23:57.10\00:23:58.77 I'd never do that, 'cause I'm a Christian, 00:23:58.80\00:24:00.90 but I sure enjoy watching them do it. 00:24:00.94\00:24:02.90 And it's like we're sinning vicariously. 00:24:04.11\00:24:05.97 You know, the Bible tells us, 00:24:06.88\00:24:08.18 let me see, I think I've got that, 00:24:08.21\00:24:09.51 maybe in the lesson, I just don't remember. 00:24:09.54\00:24:11.25 Romans 1:32, "Who, 00:24:11.28\00:24:14.45 knowing the judgment of God, 00:24:14.48\00:24:16.02 that they that commit such things are worthy of death", 00:24:16.05\00:24:18.09 the penalty for sin is death. 00:24:18.12\00:24:19.72 "They not only do the same, 00:24:19.75\00:24:21.39 but they have pleasure in them that do them." 00:24:21.42\00:24:24.59 Do we have pleasure in watching other things? 00:24:24.63\00:24:27.83 Watching other people's sin? 00:24:27.86\00:24:29.13 Being entertained by the world? 00:24:29.16\00:24:30.80 That makes you who you are, it shapes your thinking. 00:24:30.83\00:24:34.14 The Lord wants us to think pure thoughts, 00:24:34.17\00:24:35.74 but it's hard to think pure thoughts 00:24:35.77\00:24:37.24 if we're filling our minds with typical American media. 00:24:37.27\00:24:40.18 I mean, I know there are occasionally 00:24:41.31\00:24:44.95 good things that are on television, 00:24:44.98\00:24:46.78 there may even be the occasional movie 00:24:46.82\00:24:49.28 that has something historic or edifying. 00:24:49.32\00:24:51.52 It is a very rare exception, 00:24:51.55\00:24:53.52 most of these things are rated R, 00:24:53.56\00:24:55.02 they use God's name in vain, they're full of violence. 00:24:55.06\00:24:57.46 You've got all these warnings before it comes on, 00:24:57.49\00:25:00.83 drugs, violence, sexual content, 00:25:00.86\00:25:04.33 profanity, nudity, 00:25:04.37\00:25:05.97 and you get all this and you're thinking, 00:25:06.00\00:25:07.34 okay, Lord, hope you can bless all this, 00:25:07.37\00:25:09.87 I'm going to watch this now for the next two hours, 00:25:09.90\00:25:11.37 but I'm going to worship you 10 minutes later. 00:25:11.41\00:25:13.91 It affects you. 00:25:13.94\00:25:16.58 What type of music will a true Christian enjoy? 00:25:16.61\00:25:19.01 Oh, this is a difficult one. 00:25:20.28\00:25:21.72 Well, let's look at what the Bible says. 00:25:22.82\00:25:24.12 Psalm 40:3, "He's put a new song in my heart, 00:25:24.15\00:25:28.32 praised to our God." 00:25:28.36\00:25:29.72 The music ought to be music that praises God. 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.79 You know the story in the Bible where king Saul, 00:25:32.83\00:25:34.73 he had evil spirits that would trouble him, 00:25:34.73\00:25:37.20 and David came in, of course, 00:25:37.23\00:25:38.60 David was a great musician and a songwriter, 00:25:38.63\00:25:40.80 wrote about 70 of the Psalms, 00:25:40.84\00:25:43.04 150 Psalms that are in the Bible. 00:25:43.07\00:25:45.67 "And it was so, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, 00:25:45.71\00:25:49.34 that day would take a heart and play with his hand. 00:25:49.38\00:25:52.95 And then Saul would be refreshed and well, 00:25:52.98\00:25:55.18 and the distressing spirit," 00:25:55.22\00:25:56.62 there would be an evil spirit was tormenting Saul, 00:25:56.65\00:25:58.65 "Would depart from him." 00:25:58.69\00:26:01.26 So if good music can drive an evil spirit away, 00:26:01.29\00:26:04.89 would it make a sense the devil's got music 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.49 that would invite the evil spirits in? 00:26:06.53\00:26:08.40 Now everyone, we all agree to this point. 00:26:09.90\00:26:11.67 I mean, how many of you will raise your hands now and say, 00:26:11.70\00:26:14.07 we agree that there's some music 00:26:14.10\00:26:15.67 that is inappropriate for Christians? 00:26:15.70\00:26:17.77 And we all agree. 00:26:17.81\00:26:20.01 How many of you agree that your music is good? 00:26:20.04\00:26:22.08 See, everyone said, yeah, God hates bad music, 00:26:24.71\00:26:27.18 but I like only the good stuff. 00:26:27.22\00:26:28.52 Everyone draws the line though in a little different place. 00:26:28.55\00:26:31.42 There are Bible principles 00:26:31.45\00:26:32.92 that need to guide us in these things. 00:26:32.95\00:26:35.52 What should be the aim of God's people today?
