- [Announcer] This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.23\00:00:03.63 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.67\00:00:06.60 - After losing his godly mother, 00:00:09.27\00:00:10.91 when he was just seven years old, 00:00:10.94\00:00:12.77 John began to hang out with the wrong crowd. 00:00:12.81\00:00:15.71 Disturbed by his delinquency, 00:00:15.74\00:00:17.51 his father, a sea captain, 00:00:17.55\00:00:19.35 began taking him along on ocean voyages, 00:00:19.38\00:00:22.35 but John's life soon spiraled 00:00:22.38\00:00:24.22 into increasingly bad behavior. 00:00:24.25\00:00:26.72 After being pressed into the British Royal Navy, 00:00:26.76\00:00:29.82 John gave up on God entirely. 00:00:29.86\00:00:32.23 He adopted atheism and he loved tormenting Christians 00:00:32.26\00:00:35.36 with his blasphemy. 00:00:35.40\00:00:37.03 Consumed with anger and hate, 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.17 the rebel's life overflowed with misery and despair. 00:00:39.20\00:00:42.60 Eventually he signed on as a crew member on a slave ship, 00:00:42.64\00:00:46.21 but through a strange turn of Providence, 00:00:46.24\00:00:48.41 John became a slave himself. 00:00:48.44\00:00:51.05 When finally rescued, 00:00:51.08\00:00:52.38 John continued in his reckless lifestyle 00:00:52.41\00:00:54.58 of cursing, fighting and drinking, 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.75 but all of this dramatically changed 00:00:56.79\00:00:58.72 during a terrifying storm at sea 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.09 when John Newton, the author of the best loved hymn, 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.03 "Amazing Grace," finally acknowledged his need of Christ. 00:01:04.06\00:01:08.20 John Newton's dramatic and famous conversion 00:01:08.23\00:01:10.53 certainly isn't unique. 00:01:10.57\00:01:12.13 I personally know of thousands of remarkable accounts 00:01:12.17\00:01:15.67 of people from all ages 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.44 who've experienced total transformation 00:01:17.47\00:01:19.91 through the incredible power, love, and grace of Christ, 00:01:19.94\00:01:23.08 myself included. 00:01:23.11\00:01:24.71 I invite you now to join me 00:01:24.75\00:01:26.55 as I share my own personal testimony, 00:01:26.58\00:01:28.85 and I pray that you'll be blessed. 00:01:28.88\00:01:30.59 Everybody in life wants to be happy. 00:01:34.72\00:01:37.09 And many people in the world think that happiness 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.16 comes from either physical pleasure, 00:01:40.20\00:01:43.70 or, "If I could be wealthy enough," 00:01:43.73\00:01:46.33 or, "If I could be more beautiful or more popular 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.94 than I'd have real happiness." 00:01:48.97\00:01:50.87 And so many people go through life 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.67 dissatisfied with what they do have 00:01:52.71\00:01:55.54 wanting something else, 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.48 and I've learned that happiness 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.71 does not come from those things. 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.12 Now I'll start by giving you a little background, 00:02:02.15\00:02:04.19 tell you about my parents briefly. 00:02:04.22\00:02:05.92 Mother and father were as opposite as you could get. 00:02:07.39\00:02:09.46 My mother grew up Jewish background, 00:02:09.49\00:02:11.96 but she wasn't practicing. 00:02:12.93\00:02:14.20 My father grew up with a Baptist background, 00:02:14.23\00:02:16.00 but he pretty much became an atheist after World War II. 00:02:16.03\00:02:18.87 He was a pilot, captain in the air force 00:02:18.90\00:02:21.44 and flew in Europe during World War II, 00:02:21.47\00:02:25.17 but he became very successful. 00:02:25.21\00:02:28.24 He started buying army surplus planes 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.68 and built it into an airline delivering cargo, 00:02:30.71\00:02:34.25 then delivering passengers, 00:02:34.28\00:02:35.62 and at one time he owned two airlines. 00:02:35.65\00:02:38.69 He knew a lot of very wealthy, powerful people 00:02:38.72\00:02:41.59 like Howard Hughes and others in that business, 00:02:41.62\00:02:44.83 and he grew into a multi-millionaire. 00:02:44.86\00:02:49.06 Started in LA, moved the business to Miami, 00:02:49.10\00:02:52.50 had a company called Batch Air. 00:02:52.53\00:02:54.47 Now, here he is, this is wife number four, 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.24 meeting Pope John Paul II. 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.07 If you got enough money, you can... 00:02:59.11\00:03:00.51 He met presidents and he knew a lot of people. 00:03:00.54\00:03:02.84 He was a philanthropist, gave a lot of money away, 00:03:02.88\00:03:05.38 but that's not where happiness comes from. 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.92 My dad used to drink himself to sleep every night. 00:03:09.95\00:03:12.39 He was so stressed. 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.32 Jesus said, "A man's life does not consist 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.62 in the abundance of things he possesses." 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.93 The Lord tells us, "Do not lay up 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.56 treasures on earth for yourself." 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.30 In our garage, we had Rolls-Royce. 00:03:24.33\00:03:28.70 This is not my dad's Rolls. I just grabbed one online. 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.11 He had a white Rolls-Royce, a Maserati, 00:03:31.14\00:03:34.71 stepmother had a Jaguar, Ferraris, 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.98 I mean, they had all the toys. 00:03:38.01\00:03:40.38 Had fighting, coldness, unhappiness in the family, 00:03:40.42\00:03:43.55 and I thought, "What's the purpose of life? 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.19 Nobody seems to be happy." 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.66 "Thieves break through and steal. 00:03:49.02\00:03:51.43 Rust and moth corrupt," the Bible tells us. 00:03:51.46\00:03:55.10 So that's dad's side. 00:03:55.13\00:03:57.60 Mom, I don't know how they ever got married. 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.63 He was a Republican. She was a Democrat. 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.64 He was a redneck from Oklahoma. 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.21 She was a hippie from New York City. 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.34 That's maybe why they divorced 00:04:07.21\00:04:08.54 when I was three years of age. 00:04:08.58\00:04:10.25 It didn't last that long. 00:04:10.28\00:04:12.11 But mom was very talented. 00:04:12.15\00:04:14.28 She did not have much formal education, but she could sing, 00:04:14.32\00:04:19.05 she could write. 00:04:19.09\00:04:20.39 She was an attractive lady. 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.76 And she started writing songs for Elvis Presley 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.23 when she was still a teenager, 00:04:24.26\00:04:25.89 and recorded two or three with Elvis. 00:04:25.93\00:04:27.46 But she had songs that were in movies like "Stagecoach," 00:04:27.50\00:04:31.37 and she knew people like Frank Sinatra, 00:04:31.40\00:04:35.10 and Andy Williams recorded her songs, 00:04:35.14\00:04:38.37 and she wrote some standards. 00:04:38.41\00:04:39.87 She was an actress. 00:04:41.14\00:04:42.54 If you've ever seen the movie, "The Ten Commandments," 00:04:42.58\00:04:44.81 mom had a really little part in that movie. 00:04:44.85\00:04:47.55 And I'd tell the kids, I said, "There goes grandma." 00:04:47.58\00:04:49.85 That was it. (audience laughing) 00:04:49.88\00:04:52.32 But she did some acting in a couple of movies in Hollywood. 00:04:52.35\00:04:56.42 At that time she started having kids, 00:04:57.56\00:04:59.59 and so she gave that up and she became a film critic. 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.03 And I'm condensing her whole life very quickly, 00:05:05.03\00:05:07.30 but she was the president of the Film Critics 00:05:07.34\00:05:10.24 in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. 00:05:10.27\00:05:12.21 And in that position, it's a very powerful position 00:05:12.24\00:05:14.78 because she knew everybody in Hollywood. 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.88 If a movie came out, 00:05:17.91\00:05:19.75 and they spend millions of dollars on these movies, 00:05:19.78\00:05:22.92 if the film critic gave a bad review, 00:05:22.95\00:05:25.85 then their income went down, 00:05:25.89\00:05:28.32 and so they were always afraid of the power of her. 00:05:28.36\00:05:31.66 She was a film critic on "Good Morning America," 00:05:31.69\00:05:34.36 and replaced Rona Barrett. 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.33 And I just threw in a few pictures. 00:05:36.36\00:05:37.87 I could just sit here all day and show you pictures of mom. 00:05:37.90\00:05:40.57 But like here's mom with Muhammad Ali, 00:05:40.60\00:05:43.54 with Sir Paul McCartney, 00:05:43.57\00:05:46.01 Sylvester Stallone, Natalie Wood. 00:05:46.04\00:05:48.48 Some people think she looked a little bit like Natalie Wood. 00:05:48.51\00:05:52.15 Roger Moore, he was one of the James Bonds, 00:05:52.18\00:05:54.48 Sally Field, who's still alive. 00:05:54.52\00:05:57.79 There's mom with Clint Eastwood, and Paul Newman, 00:05:57.82\00:06:00.39 and Benji the Dog. 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.06 I dunno if anyone remembers that. 00:06:02.09\00:06:04.33 So I just show you these to let you know 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.56 that when I was with mom... 00:06:06.59\00:06:07.86 Now dad, I was born in Burbank, California. 00:06:07.93\00:06:10.90 Dad and mom split. 00:06:12.07\00:06:13.37 He ended up moving his business to Miami Beach. 00:06:13.40\00:06:15.07 Mom moved to New York City. 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.31 My brother and I moved around 00:06:17.34\00:06:19.17 through these different places. 00:06:19.21\00:06:20.74 When she died, she was all alone. 00:06:22.81\00:06:24.45 And we saw growing up these people that had lots of money 00:06:25.88\00:06:29.62 and they had lots of influence and fame, 00:06:29.65\00:06:32.15 and we knew some of them, that good looking, 00:06:32.19\00:06:36.22 wealthy, healthy, miserable, killed themselves. 00:06:36.26\00:06:40.40 And I used to think, "Why? 00:06:40.43\00:06:43.20 Does life have any purpose?" 00:06:43.23\00:06:45.07 And so that was the thing that struck me. 00:06:46.30\00:06:48.77 Then I decided I'm just going to, 00:06:49.94\00:06:51.87 I'm going to try and have all the fun I can. 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.01 I saw this commercial where it said, 00:06:55.08\00:06:59.01 "You only go around once in life. 00:06:59.05\00:07:00.52 get all the gusto you can." 00:07:00.55\00:07:02.15 I thought, "All right, well, I'm going to die having fun. 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.79 I'm going to just have as much fun as I can 00:07:04.82\00:07:06.99 and just go out enjoying myself." 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.99 And I started to live a very reckless life. 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.39 I began using drugs. 00:07:11.43\00:07:12.89 I started smoking when I was 13, 00:07:12.93\00:07:14.20 'cause mom and dad both smoked 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.40 and I'd just take their cigarettes. 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.90 Then mom used to smoke pot. 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.94 And one night she said, "Now well Doug, 00:07:23.07\00:07:24.37 I know that you're going to end up 00:07:24.41\00:07:25.71 being exposed to this out on the streets." 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.41 And she said, "I'd just as soon you did it here at home." 00:07:28.44\00:07:30.78 So she started to smoke pot with me 00:07:30.81\00:07:32.28 two or three times a week, or hashish, 00:07:32.31\00:07:34.52 and we'd eat ice cream and watch TV. 00:07:34.55\00:07:37.52 But you know, and so when I was with mom, 00:07:39.12\00:07:41.76 I began to use drugs at home, 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.93 and then when I was with dad in Florida... 00:07:43.96\00:07:45.89 This is actually a Google Earth photo 00:07:45.93\00:07:48.53 of the island that dad lived on. 00:07:48.56\00:07:50.93 It's still there today, Sunset Island Number One, 00:07:50.97\00:07:52.83 and he had that house on the top of the picture, 00:07:52.87\00:07:55.47 right on the water with the dock, 00:07:55.50\00:07:57.87 and had security guards that kept you 00:07:57.91\00:08:00.44 from going on the island. 00:08:00.48\00:08:01.81 Had a butler, a maid. 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.81 Dad had a bar in the house bigger than some bars 00:08:06.21\00:08:08.22 you might find in a city. 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.82 So whenever I wanted to go drink, 00:08:09.85\00:08:11.25 my friends and I would go drink all we wanted. 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.52 And so I learned how to drink with dad. 00:08:13.56\00:08:16.93 And he never realized it was missing 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.36 because the butler kept replacing it 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.16 thinking dad was just drinking more. 00:08:21.20\00:08:23.70 And so my friends and I would often party during the day 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.57 and I started drinking. 00:08:27.60\00:08:29.10 And by the way, all drugs are bad, 00:08:30.27\00:08:32.87 but more of my friends have died from alcohol than anything. 00:08:34.61\00:08:38.25 And I just mention that because I encounter Christians 00:08:38.28\00:08:41.12 every now and then that think drinking a little bit is okay. 00:08:41.15\00:08:44.02 I'll tell you friends, 00:08:44.05\00:08:45.55 one outta seven people that drinks becomes an alcoholic, 00:08:45.59\00:08:47.92 and it's just caused all kinds of misery in our society. 00:08:47.96\00:08:51.09 Christians shouldn't drink anything, any alcohol. 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.60 But then I started getting into more and more trouble. 00:08:55.00\00:08:57.87 I ran away from home the first time when I was 13. 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.54 Went up to the hills. 00:09:01.97\00:09:03.27 I always felt drawn to the hills. 00:09:03.30\00:09:05.67 Ran away the last time when I was 15. 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.38 Dad said, "I don't know what to do with you." 00:09:07.41\00:09:08.71 I was just getting into trouble 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.58 with the police and drugs, 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.08 and I'm condensing the story. 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.62 I left home. 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.15 This is actually a picture from when I was 16 years old, 00:09:17.19\00:09:19.55 a passport picture, and just started hitchhiking. 00:09:19.59\00:09:22.26 I went from Florida to Maine. 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.63 I had lied on my driver's license, 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.30 I'm born in 57. 00:09:28.33\00:09:29.80 I turned the seven into a two on my learner's permit. 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.00 I used that permit to get one that said I was born in 1952, 00:09:32.03\00:09:35.27 which made me old enough to buy alcohol and to get a job. 00:09:35.30\00:09:38.41 So I moved to Boston with some very undesirable friends 00:09:38.44\00:09:43.21 and we began to break into homes and to steal, 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.18 steal cars, steal televisions, 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.18 and it was getting a little more heavy duty. 00:09:48.22\00:09:51.39 And I had a part-time job as a security guard 00:09:51.42\00:09:54.12 during that time. (audience chuckling) 00:09:54.16\00:09:55.46 I know, it's really bizarre. 00:09:55.49\00:09:56.86 And I never stole from the people I was guarding, 00:09:56.89\00:09:58.79 'cause I thought, "Well, they're paying me. 00:09:58.83\00:10:00.20 They trust me. That wouldn't be right." 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.26 But I had a friend who was a security guard 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.60 and he knew about my day job. 00:10:05.63\00:10:07.37 See, I'd guard places at night, 00:10:07.40\00:10:08.70 I'd steal during the day 00:10:08.74\00:10:10.04 'cause if you walk out of someone's apartment 00:10:10.07\00:10:11.37 with a TV during the day, 00:10:11.41\00:10:12.71 they think you're moving. 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.08 You do it at night, you look suspicious. 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.35 My friend, he found out about what my day job was 00:10:17.38\00:10:22.38 and he said, "Doug, your karma's going to get you." 00:10:23.59\00:10:26.05 I said, "You going to turn me in?" 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.42 He said, "No, no, your karma's going to get you." 00:10:27.46\00:10:28.89 I said, "What's karma?" 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.46 He said, "Whatever you do, it comes back." 00:10:30.49\00:10:32.46 I said, "Ah, there's no God. 00:10:32.49\00:10:33.83 There's no such thing." 00:10:33.86\00:10:35.60 He said, "You'll see." 00:10:35.63\00:10:36.97 And I started watching. 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.27 You know, that principle is actually in the Bible 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.24 where it says, "Do unto others 00:10:42.27\00:10:43.57 as you would have them do unto you. 00:10:43.61\00:10:45.04 And with what measure you mete, 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.37 it'll be measured back to you." 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.04 You call it on the street, 00:10:49.08\00:10:50.38 "What goes around, comes around." 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.75 I said, "Nah, there's no God." 00:10:51.78\00:10:53.25 He said, "You'll find out." 00:10:54.52\00:10:55.95 I don't know if he was praying for me or what was happening, 00:10:55.98\00:10:57.69 but not too long after that, 00:10:57.72\00:10:59.75 I woke up in my apartment in Boston 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.69 and my door was open and my TV was gone, 00:11:02.72\00:11:05.19 and my radio, and you should have seen, 00:11:06.80\00:11:08.80 I was so indignant, I called the police and said, 00:11:08.83\00:11:10.43 "You gotta track down these thieves. 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.03 What's happening to our neighborhood?" 00:11:12.07\00:11:13.64 (audience laughing) 00:11:13.67\00:11:15.44 And I started watching, and everything I did backfired. 00:11:15.47\00:11:18.54 I would steal something, and my friends were all thieves, 00:11:18.57\00:11:21.71 they'd steal it from me. 00:11:21.74\00:11:23.24 Or I'd steal something while I was drinking or high, 00:11:23.28\00:11:25.71 and then I'd forget where I hid it 00:11:25.75\00:11:27.82 and I'd wake up and I couldn't find it. 00:11:27.85\00:11:29.45 Or I'd risk my life to steal something, 00:11:29.48\00:11:31.55 and it was broken. 00:11:31.59\00:11:32.92 I'd steal a stereo and plug it in, 00:11:33.96\00:11:35.46 it didn't even work. 00:11:35.49\00:11:36.83 And you know what finally convinced me was a small thing. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.93 I didn't just quit stealing cold turkey. 00:11:39.96\00:11:42.00 I tried to taper off, 00:11:42.03\00:11:43.37 'cause I noticed that I went to someone's house 00:11:45.17\00:11:47.60 and I stole a box of Krusteaz Instant Pancake Mix. 00:11:47.64\00:11:51.17 And I did it because I was very health conscious. 00:11:51.21\00:11:54.71 I'm drinking and using drugs and smoking, 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.91 but I only wanted whole wheat pancake mix 00:11:57.95\00:12:00.62 because I was very health conscious. 00:12:00.65\00:12:02.05 (audience laughing) 00:12:02.08\00:12:03.39 And so I stole this person's pancake mix, 00:12:03.42\00:12:06.35 and it cost $1.19. 00:12:06.39\00:12:08.12 The blue stamp of the price was on the top of the box. 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.96 That very same day, 00:12:10.99\00:12:13.03 some friends went through my place 00:12:13.06\00:12:14.46 and they took my jar of Tang Instant Breakfast Drink. 00:12:14.50\00:12:17.37 Anyone remember that? - [Audience Member] Yeah. 00:12:17.40\00:12:19.13 - And I had a brand new jar, 00:12:19.17\00:12:20.67 and there on top of the jar it was stamped $1.19. 00:12:20.70\00:12:22.97 and I looked at the pancake mix, 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.74 my friends had drunk my whole jar. 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.01 It was gone, and there was an empty jar with a lid 00:12:27.04\00:12:30.91 and I thought, "Crime doesn't pay. 00:12:30.95\00:12:32.41 There must be a God." 00:12:32.45\00:12:34.15 Once I realized there was a God, 00:12:34.18\00:12:36.08 I thought, "Wow, I better start searching." 00:12:36.12\00:12:38.62 Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.39 In just a moment we'll return 00:12:41.42\00:12:42.76 for the rest of today's presentation. 00:12:42.79\00:12:45.23 Did you know the Bible is the only book 00:12:45.26\00:12:47.50 that has remained on the best seller list year after year? You'll have adventures." 00:15:18.65\00:15:21.15 I thought, "Well, all right." 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.35 So right from there he flew me to Genoa, Italy. 00:15:23.39\00:15:28.26 And I'm at the school, they were in Naples, 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.99 and put me on this boat, 00:15:31.03\00:15:33.40 and I found out I'd been tricked a little bit. 00:15:33.43\00:15:35.76 This is actually from the website, 00:15:35.80\00:15:37.60 a picture of the school, the two ships that we sailed on. 00:15:37.63\00:15:42.30 It was a school for the children 00:15:42.34\00:15:44.57 of wealthy politicians and millionaires 00:15:44.61\00:15:46.64 that had gotten involved in drugs or some cult 00:15:46.68\00:15:49.78 to get them out of their environment 00:15:49.81\00:15:51.91 and to try and straighten them out through isolation. 00:15:51.95\00:15:54.65 Very expensive, very sophisticated. 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.79 And they teach atheism. 00:15:56.82\00:15:59.12 They indoctrinate you with atheism. 00:15:59.15\00:16:01.09 They show you films of Darwin. 00:16:01.12\00:16:02.99 You're always reading Ayn Rand books. 00:16:03.02\00:16:04.89 I mean it was... 00:16:04.93\00:16:06.23 And now I'm very religious. 00:16:06.26\00:16:08.10 Now I'm meditating trying to find God in my DNA. 00:16:08.13\00:16:12.00 I was playing my flute down in my cabin. 00:16:12.03\00:16:14.37 And I sort of rebelled. 00:16:14.40\00:16:15.70 I got into a lot of trouble. 00:16:15.74\00:16:17.04 One thing I learned though 00:16:17.07\00:16:18.37 that I thought was very interesting, 00:16:18.41\00:16:19.71 is even though now everyone on board 00:16:19.74\00:16:21.41 claimed to be an atheist, 00:16:21.44\00:16:22.78 we were sailing from Northern Africa 00:16:23.91\00:16:25.65 over to Spain just before Christmas, 00:16:25.68\00:16:28.28 and we encountered a terrible storm. 00:16:29.48\00:16:32.39 And I know on a map the Mediterranean 00:16:32.42\00:16:34.52 doesn't look very big, but if you get out in the 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.32 middle of it in a storm, it looks very big. 00:16:36.36\00:16:39.06 And the waves got to be 25, 30 feet. 00:16:39.09\00:16:42.10 And the bow of the ship was going through the waves, 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.80 and parts of the wave would roll across the boat 00:16:44.83\00:16:47.20 and things were washing overboard. 00:16:47.24\00:16:48.87 The wind picked up. 00:16:48.90\00:16:50.21 It was like a hurricane and the sail ripped 00:16:50.24\00:16:52.11 and the boat's rocking back and forth. 00:16:52.14\00:16:54.08 So you go below deck and everybody's bunks 00:16:54.11\00:16:56.98 and books and things were all tossed helter-skelter 00:16:57.01\00:17:00.22 in the bottom of the ship. 00:17:00.25\00:17:01.58 And everybody was seasick. 00:17:01.62\00:17:03.62 And the captain was seasick. 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.92 And the water was very cold, 00:17:07.99\00:17:09.39 and the captain said, 00:17:09.42\00:17:10.73 "Look, if you get blown overboard, 00:17:10.76\00:17:12.23 we need to let you know, 00:17:12.26\00:17:13.56 you have to be very careful 00:17:13.60\00:17:14.86 because we can't turn around and get you. 00:17:14.93\00:17:16.53 We will mark the spot. 00:17:16.56\00:17:18.00 But in this storm, if we turn around we'll capsize." 00:17:18.03\00:17:20.70 I mean, it was that scary. 00:17:20.74\00:17:22.04 What do you think atheists do in a storm 00:17:22.07\00:17:24.04 when they think they're going to die? 00:17:24.07\00:17:25.74 Nobody needed any lessons. 00:17:26.91\00:17:28.68 And everybody knew what to say. 00:17:29.84\00:17:31.45 So, and I was praying too. 00:17:32.48\00:17:34.42 And they're all making promises. 00:17:34.45\00:17:35.92 People know what to confess when they're about to die. 00:17:35.95\00:17:37.55 They don't need any... 00:17:37.59\00:17:38.89 They know what's wrong. 00:17:38.92\00:17:40.69 Well, about this time, 00:17:40.72\00:17:45.26 when they gave us Christmas break, I took off. 00:17:45.29\00:17:48.70 I said, "I'm never going back to this school again." 00:17:48.73\00:17:51.03 I went home. 00:17:51.07\00:17:52.37 I sold everything I had to my brother, 00:17:52.40\00:17:53.70 and I took off and I started hitch hiking from Miami, 00:17:53.74\00:17:57.21 Florida, to California. 00:17:57.24\00:17:59.04 My grandparents lived in Desert Hot Springs. 00:17:59.07\00:18:00.68 And I had found a cave when I was 15 years old 00:18:00.71\00:18:03.18 hitchhiking around the country. 00:18:03.21\00:18:04.55 Found a cave and I thought, 00:18:04.58\00:18:05.88 "I'm going to go move back up in that cave. 00:18:05.91\00:18:07.82 I'm going to now find God in nature." 00:18:07.85\00:18:10.02 And so I did that. 00:18:10.99\00:18:12.32 On my way across, I got stuck hitchhiking in Oklahoma. 00:18:13.69\00:18:17.56 Now this is Christmas time and it was freezing cold. 00:18:17.59\00:18:22.10 And I had come from Florida and I wasn't thinking, 00:18:22.13\00:18:24.27 and I've got this thin windbreaker jacket 00:18:24.30\00:18:27.70 and no warm clothes, 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.34 and the weather is below freezing 00:18:29.37\00:18:30.94 and I'm out on the interstate begging for a ride. 00:18:30.97\00:18:34.01 And I thought I was going to die out there. 00:18:34.04\00:18:35.54 And I spent hours out there and nobody would pick me up. 00:18:35.58\00:18:39.35 I was hungover from drinking and playing pool. 00:18:39.38\00:18:42.88 The day before, 00:18:42.92\00:18:44.22 I'd lost all my money in making silly bets. 00:18:44.25\00:18:47.89 And I became very desperate. 00:18:47.92\00:18:49.22 I was a pretty rotten person. 00:18:49.26\00:18:52.39 I said, "Lord," I prayed. 00:18:52.43\00:18:55.53 I said, "Will You please help me?" 00:18:55.56\00:18:56.87 I didn't even know how to pray, 00:18:56.90\00:18:58.20 I prayed the simple prayer. 00:18:58.23\00:18:59.53 I asked God for four things. 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.60 I said, "Will You please help me get a ride 00:19:01.64\00:19:04.27 to where I'm going?" 00:19:04.31\00:19:05.61 I still had like 1500 miles to go. 00:19:05.64\00:19:07.21 "Will You please help me get some food, I'm hungry." 00:19:08.61\00:19:12.41 I said, "Please help me get some money. I'm broke." 00:19:12.45\00:19:15.38 And I said, "Please give me a ride with someone normal." 00:19:15.42\00:19:18.22 Because hitchhiking, I kept getting 00:19:18.25\00:19:19.92 picked up by crazy people, or they had ulterior motives, 00:19:19.95\00:19:23.32 or they were drunk and nearly scared me half to death. 00:19:23.36\00:19:26.06 As soon as I finished praying, 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.33 the next vehicle stopped and picked me up, 00:19:28.36\00:19:31.17 took me 1500 miles to the door of Palm Springs 00:19:31.20\00:19:34.94 of where I was going. 00:19:34.97\00:19:36.57 Fed me all the way out. I didn't ask him to. 00:19:36.60\00:19:40.08 He gave me $40 when he dropped me off that I didn't ask for. 00:19:40.11\00:19:43.91 I also did not ask for him to preach to me 00:19:43.95\00:19:46.01 all the way from Oklahoma (audience laughing) 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.82 to Palm Springs, California. 00:19:47.85\00:19:50.22 This guy was a born again Christian. 00:19:50.25\00:19:51.62 So when I prayed for a ride, God said, 00:19:51.65\00:19:53.05 "I'm waiting for the right ride, Doug." 00:19:53.09\00:19:55.76 This guy picked me up and he's just very nice. 00:19:55.79\00:19:57.79 Whenever we stopped to eat, he said, 00:19:57.83\00:19:59.13 "Let me buy your food." 00:19:59.16\00:20:00.50 I had to listen to him or jump out of the car. 00:20:01.33\00:20:03.53 And so, you know, I pick up hitchhikers 00:20:04.57\00:20:05.87 and I witness to 'em now. 00:20:05.90\00:20:07.20 I still do that. 00:20:07.24\00:20:08.54 And I find it helps if you wait until you're doing about 65, 00:20:08.57\00:20:11.31 and then you make your gospel presentation. 00:20:11.34\00:20:13.21 (audience laughing) 00:20:13.24\00:20:14.54 And then you turn and look at them 00:20:14.58\00:20:15.88 and then you accelerate and say, 00:20:15.91\00:20:17.21 "Would you like to accept Jesus?" 00:20:17.25\00:20:18.55 (audience laughing) 00:20:18.58\00:20:20.55 No, I do, I still pick up hitchhikers. 00:20:20.58\00:20:21.88 I don't do that, though. 00:20:21.92\00:20:23.25 So this time now I was going to find God through nature. 00:20:25.95\00:20:28.16 And this is some pictures that my brother 00:20:28.19\00:20:29.89 actually took of when I was... 00:20:29.92\00:20:31.49 I'm 17 years old at this point. 00:20:31.53\00:20:33.73 And I went up to the cave and... 00:20:33.76\00:20:37.10 I found a cave that was, 00:20:39.07\00:20:40.37 it was several thousand feet above Palm Springs. 00:20:40.40\00:20:44.41 And then you go back down in this valley 00:20:44.44\00:20:46.17 and right by the cave there was water. 00:20:46.21\00:20:49.21 The mountain was 11,000 feet. It's Mount San Jacinto. 00:20:49.24\00:20:51.98 There's actually a picture of it. 00:20:52.01\00:20:53.72 I think it's the next picture there. 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.32 So water always came down by the cave. 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.95 And it's a very isolated spot 00:20:58.99\00:21:00.89 even though you're in Southern California. 00:21:00.92\00:21:02.32 And I lived in the cave, I never wore any clothes. 00:21:02.36\00:21:05.53 It was warm. 00:21:05.56\00:21:06.96 And I thought, "I'm going to find God in nature." 00:21:07.00\00:21:08.76 And I even had a Bible argument, "Adam and Eve were naked. 00:21:08.80\00:21:11.17 This is God's plan." 00:21:11.20\00:21:12.87 Now I went to town, I put clothes on, 00:21:12.90\00:21:14.20 'cause you don't last very long 00:21:14.24\00:21:15.54 walking around like that in town. 00:21:15.57\00:21:16.94 But one time I did go to town and I forgot, 00:21:16.97\00:21:18.94 but that's another story. 00:21:18.97\00:21:20.28 (audience laughing) 00:21:20.31\00:21:21.88 So I would panhandle, I'd play the flute, 00:21:21.91\00:21:24.21 and I'd dig around in the dumpster. 00:21:24.25\00:21:26.38 Now think about this. 00:21:27.55\00:21:28.88 When my grandparents found out and they told my father, 00:21:30.25\00:21:33.15 they said, "Doug is getting his food 00:21:33.19\00:21:35.12 out of the garbage behind the market." 00:21:35.16\00:21:37.73 My father worked so hard so that we would not be poor 00:21:37.76\00:21:40.50 like he was during the Depression. 00:21:40.53\00:21:42.23 His father died when he was seven, 00:21:43.50\00:21:45.03 and he and his brothers had to work so hard 00:21:45.07\00:21:46.94 to fight off poverty, and he thought, 00:21:46.97\00:21:49.14 "I never want my kids to do that." 00:21:49.17\00:21:50.87 They said, "Doug is getting his food 00:21:50.91\00:21:52.21 out of the garbage can." 00:21:52.24\00:21:53.78 How do you think that made him feel? 00:21:53.81\00:21:56.21 That just broke him. 00:21:56.24\00:21:57.58 How do you think your Heavenly Father feels 00:21:58.58\00:22:00.18 when He gives His Son to save you from sin, 00:22:00.22\00:22:02.12 and we go to the devil's dumpster for happiness? 00:22:02.15\00:22:04.69 That breaks His heart. 00:22:06.09\00:22:07.39 It's not going to satisfy you. 00:22:07.42\00:22:08.92 Well, the miracle that I didn't share with you... 00:22:09.82\00:22:11.56 Oh, by the way, here's a picture. 00:22:11.59\00:22:12.89 I'm in my cave with my cat, Stranger. 00:22:12.93\00:22:15.10 I found one picture where I had my clothes on. 00:22:16.50\00:22:18.37 Thought I'd share that with you. 00:22:18.40\00:22:19.70 (audience laughing) 00:22:19.73\00:22:21.04 The miracle is in my cave, 00:22:21.07\00:22:23.77 somebody had left a Bible in the cave. 00:22:23.81\00:22:25.21 When I moved into the cave, other people had camped there. 00:22:25.24\00:22:27.31 There was soot on the ceiling, 00:22:27.34\00:22:28.64 and there was some old sleeping bags, 00:22:28.68\00:22:30.45 and pots and pans, and a Bible. 00:22:30.48\00:22:32.51 Well, I didn't pay much attention to it, 00:22:33.68\00:22:35.05 but after about six months, 00:22:35.08\00:22:36.38 I thought, "I'm going to read the Bible 00:22:36.42\00:22:37.72 so I can argue with Christians." 00:22:37.75\00:22:39.89 'Cause I kept meeting these Christians, 00:22:39.92\00:22:41.22 and I thought they were so ignorant. 00:22:41.26\00:22:43.22 I said, "No, you're just... 00:22:43.26\00:22:44.56 I believe in reincarnation." 00:22:44.59\00:22:45.89 And they were just... 00:22:45.93\00:22:47.23 I said, "Bible's been changed. 00:22:47.23\00:22:48.53 You can't believe the Bible. It's fables and fairy tales." 00:22:48.56\00:22:53.77 So I said, "I'm going to read the Bible 00:22:53.80\00:22:55.10 so I can argue with them," 00:22:55.14\00:22:56.54 'cause I felt ignorant. 00:22:56.57\00:22:57.87 They'd say, "Are you born again?" 00:22:57.91\00:22:59.37 I thought, "What do they mean?" 00:22:59.41\00:23:00.78 "Are you washed in the blood?" 00:23:00.81\00:23:02.04 And I thought, "That was gory. What are they talking about?" 00:23:02.08\00:23:04.31 So I began to read the Bible, 00:23:04.35\00:23:06.61 and I got bogged down in the Old Testament. 00:23:06.65\00:23:09.58 Someone said, "Doug, you need to go to the New Testament." 00:23:09.62\00:23:12.32 So I went to the New Testament, 00:23:12.35\00:23:13.76 and I read Matthew, Mark. 00:23:13.79\00:23:15.36 I read about Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. 00:23:15.39\00:23:18.36 Every day I'd make banana bread 00:23:18.39\00:23:19.79 from the day-old bananas I got from the market, 00:23:19.83\00:23:22.73 and I'd eat banana bread and I'd read the Bible. 00:23:22.76\00:23:25.17 And I kept saying, "This can't be true. 00:23:26.33\00:23:28.24 No, this can't be true." 00:23:28.27\00:23:29.74 But a voice kept telling me, "This is the truth. 00:23:29.77\00:23:31.64 And just the teachings of Jesus." 00:23:31.67\00:23:33.98 I finally came to the same conclusion as C.S. Lewis. 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.98 He says, "You really, when you encounter Jesus, 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.15 you've only got three options. 00:23:39.18\00:23:40.65 He's either a liar, He's a lunatic, or He's Lord." 00:23:40.68\00:23:45.62 - [Audience Member] Amen. 00:23:46.42\00:23:47.72 - And I said, "Well, He's not crazy, 00:23:47.76\00:23:49.06 'cause He said the most profound things 00:23:49.09\00:23:50.39 I've ever heard. 00:23:50.43\00:23:51.73 He's not a liar because He could've lied to save His life." 00:23:51.76\00:23:54.93 Everything He said resonated with truth. 00:23:54.96\00:23:57.63 "My only option is this man was telling the truth 00:23:57.67\00:24:01.07 that God became a man to save us from our sins." 00:24:01.10\00:24:05.04 And then I knew what that meant 00:24:05.07\00:24:06.37 is that I needed to ask Him to save me. 00:24:06.41\00:24:09.64 And while I was only 17, 00:24:10.55\00:24:12.41 I had a pretty good record of sin. 00:24:12.45\00:24:14.15 And so up there in the cave I got on my knees 00:24:15.35\00:24:16.95 and I said, "Lord, I'm a mess. 00:24:16.99\00:24:19.22 But if You would forgive me 00:24:19.25\00:24:21.16 and give me some purpose for living." 00:24:21.19\00:24:22.96 I was a number one first class zero. 00:24:22.99\00:24:26.03 I was running around in the mountains, 00:24:26.06\00:24:27.86 eating out of garbage cans, 00:24:27.93\00:24:29.20 using drugs, drinking, stealing, 00:24:29.23\00:24:31.00 thought I was spiritual, 00:24:31.03\00:24:32.73 long hair and a beard. 00:24:34.14\00:24:35.60 I mean I was just a big zero. 00:24:35.64\00:24:37.54 I said, "Lord, if You give me some purpose for living," 00:24:37.57\00:24:41.01 and He came into my heart and began to transform me, 00:24:41.04\00:24:45.31 and I felt so happy, I felt a peace and a joy 00:24:45.35\00:24:47.98 that now every time someone came by my cave hiking, 00:24:48.02\00:24:50.79 I started giving Bible studies. 00:24:50.82\00:24:52.62 First Bible studies, I had no clothes on. 00:24:52.65\00:24:55.06 (audience chuckling) 00:24:55.09\00:24:56.59 But they didn't have any clothes on either. 00:24:56.62\00:24:58.26 So you know, the Lord meets us where we're at. 00:24:58.29\00:25:00.60 I think, God, He's very patient. 00:25:01.46\00:25:04.13 I was absolutely sincere, 00:25:04.17\00:25:05.60 and I was giving Bible studies to people. 00:25:05.63\00:25:07.60 And then I said, "Lord, maybe You don't want me 00:25:07.64\00:25:09.04 to live in a cave forever." 00:25:09.07\00:25:10.51 I said, "I want to tell people about You, 00:25:10.54\00:25:12.11 but I don't know how that's going to happen." 00:25:12.14\00:25:13.64 I said, "I'm in a cave, but I feel this desire to tell." 00:25:13.68\00:25:15.71 I said, "Lord, if You want me 00:25:15.74\00:25:17.05 to tell other people about You, 00:25:17.08\00:25:18.51 You've gotta work this out." 00:25:18.55\00:25:20.05 So a quick story. 00:25:20.08\00:25:21.38 After I prayed that prayer and I said, 00:25:21.42\00:25:22.78 "Lord, if You want me to tell other people about You, 00:25:22.82\00:25:24.95 I dunno how I'm going to do it, I'm a hermit." 00:25:24.99\00:25:27.49 I go down to town and I call my mother collect. 00:25:27.52\00:25:29.96 I used to check in and she'd say, 00:25:29.99\00:25:31.49 "Just tell me you're alive once every couple weeks." 00:25:31.53\00:25:34.10 So I called mom. She said, "I'm glad you called." 00:25:34.10\00:25:36.56 She said, "Are you going to be at your cave next week?" 00:25:36.60\00:25:38.73 I said, "Yeah." 00:25:38.77\00:25:40.20 She said, "I'm going to come visit you." 00:25:40.24\00:25:42.20 I said, "What?" I said, "You can't get up there." 00:25:42.24\00:25:43.54 She said, "No, no. 00:25:43.57\00:25:44.87 I'm bringing a film crew with a helicopter. 00:25:44.91\00:25:46.74 They want to interview you. 00:25:47.64\00:25:49.04 They think it's interesting that a millionaire's son 00:25:49.08\00:25:51.01 is living in a cave." 00:25:51.05\00:25:53.11 And ABC, I'm sorry, NBC rented a helicopter 00:25:54.25\00:25:58.39 and a film crew. 00:25:58.42\00:25:59.72 They flew me up to the cave. 00:25:59.75\00:26:01.22 This was actually that day in front of the cave. 00:26:01.26\00:26:03.22 They flew mom in with a helicopter. 00:26:03.26\00:26:05.19 This is Bill Applegate. 00:26:05.23\00:26:06.73 It was on national television three times. 00:26:06.76\00:26:08.86 And they said, "Why are you doing this?" 00:26:08.90\00:26:10.30 I was able to share a quick testimony. 00:26:10.33\00:26:12.33 Right after I said, "Lord, if You want me to tell anyone, 00:26:13.77\00:26:15.54 I don't know how I'm going to tell anyone. 00:26:15.57\00:26:16.87 I live in a cave," 00:26:16.91\00:26:18.21 he sends a film crew to my cave. 00:26:18.24\00:26:20.54 (audience laughing) 00:26:20.58\00:26:22.64 That's when I started thinking, "Maybe He will give me 00:26:22.68\00:26:25.21 an opportunity to tell other people." 00:26:25.25\00:26:27.35 - [Announcer] Don't forget to request today's 00:26:31.09\00:26:32.75 life changing free resource. 00:26:32.79\00:26:34.79 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, 00:26:34.82\00:26:36.93 you can download a digital copy 00:26:36.96\00:26:38.33 straight to your computer or mobile device. 00:26:38.36\00:26:40.83 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, 00:26:40.86\00:26:43.53 simply text the keyword on your screen to 40544, 00:26:43.57\00:26:47.64 or visit the web address shown on your screen, 00:26:47.67\00:26:50.41 and be sure to select the digital download option 00:26:50.44\00:26:52.84 on the request page. 00:26:52.87\00:26:54.34 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word 00:26:54.38\00:26:57.35 with Amazing Facts, wherever and whenever you want, 00:26:57.38\00:27:00.55 and most important, to share it with others. 00:27:00.58\00:27:03.35 Have you always wanted to be a Bible expert, 00:27:05.42\00:27:07.52 but never knew where to start? 00:27:07.56\00:27:09.56 Are you searching for answers 00:27:09.59\00:27:10.93 that will bring you joy, peace and fulfillment? 00:27:10.96\00:27:14.10 Then you'll love the Amazing Facts 00:27:14.13\00:27:16.20 "Storacles of Prophecy" Bible study experience, 00:27:16.23\00:27:19.47 now available in 18 languages. 00:27:19.50\00:27:21.80 Featuring 24 easy-to-read lessons, 00:27:21.84\00:27:24.51 the Storacles are packed with scripture 00:27:24.54\00:27:26.81 and step-by-step guidance that will give you 00:27:26.84\00:27:29.48 absolute confidence about what the Bible actually says 00:27:29.51\00:27:32.68 about the Second Coming, the Rapture, 00:27:32.71\00:27:34.92 the antichrist, and the mark of the beast. 00:27:34.95\00:27:37.72 You'll also get the truth about hell and the afterlife, 00:27:37.75\00:27:40.86 and practical insight about grace, salvation, 00:27:40.89\00:27:43.96 and how to truly live like Jesus. 00:27:43.99\00:27:47.10 Even better, it's absolutely free at storacles.com. 00:27:47.13\00:27:51.70 So don't miss out. 00:27:51.73\00:27:53.17 Get started on your Bible Study adventure today 00:27:53.20\00:27:56.17 at storacles.com. 00:27:56.20\00:27:58.34 (bright music) 00:28:01.01\00:28:03.61 Don't forget to request today's free offer. 00:28:05.08\00:28:06.45 It's sure to be a blessing. 00:28:06.48\00:28:08.25 And thank you for your continued support 00:28:08.28\00:28:10.32 as we take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. 00:28:10.35\00:28:13.59 We hope you'll join us next week 00:28:13.62\00:28:15.36 as we delve deep into the Word of God 00:28:15.39\00:28:17.73 to explore more Amazing Facts. 00:28:17.76\00:28:20.26 This presentation was brought to you 00:28:24.07\00:28:25.53 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:28:25.57\00:28:28.24
