male announcer: This presentation is brought to 00:00:02.10\00:00:03.63 you by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.67\00:00:06.90 ¤¤¤ 00:00:07.40\00:00:09.90 Doug Batchelor: One of the more bizarre laws in 00:00:09.94\00:00:11.44 Minnesota forbids any game where participants chase a greased pig 00:00:11.47\00:00:16.41 in order to catch it. 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.61 It's also illegal to throw knives at men wearing striped 00:00:18.65\00:00:22.38 suits in Natoma, Kansas. 00:00:22.42\00:00:25.29 In West Virginia, using your ferret for hunting can land you 00:00:25.32\00:00:28.92 in jail for up to 100 days. 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.96 And you'd better not transport ice cream in your pocket 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.93 in Kentucky. 00:00:34.96\00:00:36.63 It's against the law to gather seaweed at night 00:00:36.67\00:00:39.43 in New Hampshire. 00:00:39.47\00:00:40.97 And in Vermont, a woman needs written permission from her 00:00:41.00\00:00:43.77 husband before she can lawfully wear false teeth. 00:00:43.81\00:00:47.64 Doesn't it seem like humans excel at making things 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.08 unnecessarily complex? 00:00:50.11\00:00:52.75 On the other hand, God's moral code is streamlined, simple, 00:00:52.78\00:00:57.05 and totally practical. 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.15 The Ten Commandments are also a perfect reflection of the loving 00:00:59.19\00:01:03.29 character of God. 00:01:03.32\00:01:05.66 They help us to see sin in our lives and to point us in the 00:01:05.69\00:01:08.06 right direction. 00:01:08.10\00:01:09.46 So, join me today, as we look deeper into this essential law 00:01:09.50\00:01:13.57 of love. 00:01:13.60\00:01:15.10 Doug: You know, I heard an interesting story. 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.78 Pastor Joe Cruz used to share this illustration, that the 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.11 shrimp out there in the ocean, when they molt, as they grow, 00:01:25.15\00:01:30.25 they slough off their old skin. 00:01:30.29\00:01:32.72 They have to swim down to the bottom of the shore, and they 00:01:32.75\00:01:37.09 grab a piece of sand, and with their little hands, they've got 00:01:37.13\00:01:40.13 a crevice in their head with a little pocket in it, and they 00:01:40.16\00:01:43.06 push a piece of sand down in there, and it's called 00:01:43.10\00:01:45.13 a status stone. 00:01:45.17\00:01:46.97 And what happens is when the shrimp are getting beat up in 00:01:47.00\00:01:49.10 the waves and the currents, and they're all swirling around, 00:01:49.14\00:01:51.31 they always know how to swim right side up, because they've 00:01:51.34\00:01:54.34 got this little piece of sand in their head that helps them keep 00:01:54.38\00:01:57.21 their equilibrium, and so that they know which end is up. 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.85 Well, a marine biologist got a bright idea. 00:02:00.88\00:02:02.75 He got an aquarium and filled them up with shrimp, but in the 00:02:02.78\00:02:05.45 bottom of the aquarium there was no sand. 00:02:05.49\00:02:08.19 He put little iron pellets. 00:02:08.22\00:02:11.23 And when it came time for them to molt and to replace their 00:02:11.26\00:02:13.86 status stone, they went down there; not finding any sand, 00:02:13.90\00:02:17.13 they all grabbed a little piece of iron, and they stuck it in 00:02:17.17\00:02:18.97 the crevice with their little claws, and everything was fine. 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.77 But this marine biologist had a sense of humor. 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.81 So, he got a large electromagnet, and he put it 00:02:24.84\00:02:27.61 across the top of the aquarium. 00:02:27.64\00:02:29.81 It was like a bar. 00:02:29.84\00:02:32.31 And he flipped the switch and turned it on; and as soon as he 00:02:32.35\00:02:34.42 did, all the shrimp spun around and began to swim upside down. 00:02:34.45\00:02:40.16 And he would watch that, and he turned it off, and they 00:02:40.19\00:02:42.19 swam normal. 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.56 And he turned it back on, they flipped upside down. 00:02:43.59\00:02:44.89 He thought, "This is amazing." Then he got another idea. 00:02:44.93\00:02:48.03 He said, "I wonder what'll happen if I take a normal shrimp 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.60 that's got the normal rock in his head and drop him in with 00:02:50.63\00:02:54.17 the other shrimp, will he flip upside down to fit in, or will 00:02:54.20\00:02:58.47 he swim appropriately? 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.41 So, he did that. 00:03:01.44\00:03:02.68 He dropped this other shrimp in that was a normal shrimp with a 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.51 piece of sand in his head, with all the other shrimps that had 00:03:04.55\00:03:06.65 rusty iron in their heads, and this one shrimp, he swam right 00:03:06.68\00:03:12.42 side up, and all the other shrimp began to talk about him. 00:03:12.45\00:03:17.03 I don't know if that's true. 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.43 But you can imagine what they were thinking. 00:03:19.46\00:03:21.10 "Who does this guy think he is? Why is he swimming upside down?" 00:03:21.13\00:03:23.57 He was actually the only one that was swimming right side up. 00:03:23.60\00:03:26.97 That's what's happening in our world today. 00:03:27.00\00:03:29.44 We've got people everywhere swimming upside down. 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.37 And since everyone else is swimming upside down, we think 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.17 we're supposed to flip upside down, too. 00:03:33.21\00:03:37.38 Someone once said because a million people believe a dumb 00:03:37.41\00:03:39.65 idea, it's still a dumb idea. 00:03:39.68\00:03:43.85 Moses said, "Do not follow a multitude to do evil." 00:03:43.89\00:03:47.19 And we're being just bombarded by media or the idea that we're 00:03:47.22\00:03:52.49 supposed to sacrifice our principles so that we could fit 00:03:52.53\00:03:55.46 in with the culture today. 00:03:55.50\00:03:56.90 We will not be judged by the culture. 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.63 We're going to be judged by the Word of God. 00:03:58.67\00:04:01.84 Now, the title for our presentation tonight is 00:04:01.87\00:04:04.61 "The Commands of the King." 00:04:04.64\00:04:07.24 You might be thinking, "Pastor Doug, in a prophecy seminar like 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.61 this, why are we talking about the law of God? 00:04:09.64\00:04:13.18 Let me give you three quotes from the book of Revelation, the 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.65 book of prophecy in the Bible, the last book in the Bible. 00:04:15.68\00:04:17.89 Revelation chapter 12, verse 17, "The dragon was wroth with the 00:04:17.92\00:04:22.42 woman, and he went to make war with the remnant of her seed 00:04:22.46\00:04:26.49 that keeps the commandments of God." 00:04:26.53\00:04:29.16 Who does the devil make war with? 00:04:29.20\00:04:30.80 The ones who keep the commandments of God. 00:04:30.83\00:04:32.90 You look in Revelation chapter 14, verse 12, "Here is the 00:04:32.93\00:04:36.50 patience of the saints. 00:04:36.54\00:04:37.97 Here are those who keep the commandments of God 00:04:38.01\00:04:41.21 and have the faith of Jesus." 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.24 Go to the last chapter in the Bible. 00:04:43.28\00:04:45.21 It's real easy to find, last chapter in Revelation, and it 00:04:45.25\00:04:48.68 said, "Blessed are those that keep His commandments, that they 00:04:48.72\00:04:51.75 might have a right to the tree of life and enter in through the 00:04:51.79\00:04:55.26 gates of the city." 00:04:55.29\00:04:56.69 So, here's three times in Revelation it says that the 00:04:56.73\00:04:59.36 people who are going to be successful and survive are the 00:04:59.39\00:05:02.96 ones who are obedient. 00:05:03.00\00:05:04.90 Indeed, when you look at the messages of Jesus to the seven 00:05:04.93\00:05:07.10 churches in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation, it says, "to him who 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.84 overcomes," "to him who overcomes," "to him who 00:05:09.87\00:05:11.34 overcomes," seven times. 00:05:11.37\00:05:13.78 God wants His people to be an obedient people. 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.98 Now, I believe--in case there's any question--I don't want you 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.48 to doubt this at all. 00:05:19.51\00:05:20.92 We are saved by grace through faith. 00:05:20.95\00:05:23.42 We are saved by faith. 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.32 But I believe when you are saved by faith, you will obey. 00:05:25.35\00:05:29.49 Obedience is not legalism. 00:05:29.52\00:05:32.79 Some pastors are making it sound today like if you believe in or 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.83 talk about obedience, you are automatically a legalist. 00:05:35.86\00:05:38.90 The Bible does not teach that. 00:05:38.93\00:05:40.54 The Bible teaches that we are to be obedient to God. 00:05:40.57\00:05:43.94 He wants to save us from our sins, right? 00:05:43.97\00:05:45.97 Did Jesus keep the Ten Commandments? 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.98 What is a Christian? 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.91 A Christian is a follower of Christ. 00:05:50.95\00:05:52.85 Isn't that right? 00:05:52.88\00:05:54.52 So, if we do what Jesus did, you're safe. 00:05:54.55\00:05:57.32 What does the Bible say? 00:05:57.35\00:05:58.99 John 15, verse 10, Christ said, "I have kept My Father's 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.92 commandments and abide in His love." 00:06:02.96\00:06:06.39 The Bible says, "Thy word I have hidden in my heart that I might 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.16 not sin against thee." 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.80 How many people have sinned? 00:06:11.83\00:06:14.50 According to the Bible, "All have sinned and fallen short of 00:06:14.54\00:06:18.24 the glory of God." 00:06:18.27\00:06:20.24 Everybody sins. 00:06:20.28\00:06:21.81 So, we're not talking about that there's no hope for anyone 00:06:21.84\00:06:24.08 because we've all broken God's law. 00:06:24.11\00:06:27.02 What is the punishment for living a life of sin? 00:06:27.05\00:06:30.22 "The wages of sin is death." 00:06:30.25\00:06:33.15 It's very serious. 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.89 And when God saves us, he doesn't want us to just cut down 00:06:34.92\00:06:38.79 on our sin because sin is deadly. 00:06:38.83\00:06:42.13 He wants to save us from our sin. 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.10 And the Lord can help you stop the things and the addictions 00:06:44.13\00:06:49.77 that are a problem in your life. 00:06:49.80\00:06:51.24 He can help you stop lying. 00:06:51.27\00:06:53.24 He can help you stop stealing. 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.18 And yet, even the churches say, "Pastor Doug, now you're 00:06:55.21\00:06:57.55 getting legalistic." 00:06:57.58\00:06:59.68 I remember John Lomacang and I were doing an interview, a 00:06:59.71\00:07:03.55 debate on television, channel 42, oh, it must be 30 years ago, 00:07:03.59\00:07:07.62 with some other ministers about the commandments. 00:07:07.66\00:07:10.79 And these ministers said, "We're not under the law. 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.03 Nobody can keep the law." 00:07:13.06\00:07:15.33 And I said, "Are you telling me that nobody can keep 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.43 the Ten Commandments?" 00:07:17.47\00:07:18.80 They said, "No." 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.54 I said, "So, God gave people a law, told them to keep it, and 00:07:20.57\00:07:23.37 then punished them for not keeping it, and He knew they 00:07:23.41\00:07:25.91 could never keep it." 00:07:25.94\00:07:27.98 "So, that's right. 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.38 He needed them to understand that they couldn't do it, and so 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.41 that He was just going to have to forgive them through Jesus." 00:07:31.45\00:07:34.08 I said, "You don't think we can keep any of the commandments?" 00:07:34.12\00:07:37.42 I said, "You married?" 00:07:37.45\00:07:40.76 I said, "How about the seventh commandment?" 00:07:40.79\00:07:43.89 I said, "Do you believe the devil can tempt us to sin?" 00:07:43.93\00:07:47.03 "Yeah." 00:07:47.03\00:07:48.50 Said, "But you don't think Jesus can keep us from sin?" 00:07:48.53\00:07:51.17 So, in my book, Jesus said, "Greater is He that is in you 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.44 than he that is in the world." 00:07:53.47\00:07:55.77 Got all these bumper stickers out that say Christians 00:07:55.80\00:07:57.17 aren't perfect. 00:07:57.21\00:07:58.81 They're just forgiven. 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.48 And while I agree that Christians may not be perfect, 00:08:00.51\00:08:01.91 we are more than just forgiven. 00:08:01.94\00:08:03.95 We should be different. 00:08:03.98\00:08:05.55 God has called us to lives of holiness. 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.25 The penalty for sin is death. 00:08:07.28\00:08:09.15 Jesus came to save us from that by giving us new hearts. 00:08:09.18\00:08:12.75 Some say the Ten Commandments are not binding for 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.86 New Testament Christians. 00:08:14.89\00:08:16.32 What does Jesus say about that? 00:08:16.36\00:08:18.96 "If you would enter into life, keep the commandments." 00:08:18.99\00:08:22.26 Now, is that ambiguous? 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.17 Is that difficult to understand, or is that pretty plain coming 00:08:24.20\00:08:27.57 from the lips of our Savior? 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.07 If you would--and someone came to Him and said, "Lord, what 00:08:30.11\00:08:32.57 must I do to be saved?" 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.11 He says, "Do you know the commandments?" 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.98 And now he could've said, "Well, I've broken them." 00:08:36.01\00:08:37.38 And He would say, "Well, I'll forgive you for the ones 00:08:37.41\00:08:38.85 you've broken, but take up your cross and follow Me." 00:08:38.88\00:08:41.95 I live a new life. Jesus healed people. 00:08:41.98\00:08:44.59 He said, "Go and sin no more lest a worse thing come 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.69 upon you." 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.02 How can that be confused? 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.82 God wants us to stop our disobedience and not just be 00:08:49.86\00:08:52.86 Christians in word but in deed. 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.06 This is the Scriptures, friends. Amen? 00:08:56.10\00:08:58.97 But you don't hear this very often. 00:08:59.00\00:09:00.40 And there's a lot--that's why so many people are going to come 00:09:00.44\00:09:02.14 to Jesus in the last days. 00:09:02.17\00:09:03.77 "Okay, great. Lord, Lord, here I am." 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.34 And He's going to say, "I don't know you." 00:09:06.37\00:09:08.11 "Oh, but I taught in your streets and did many 00:09:08.14\00:09:09.84 wonderful works." 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.45 He says, "Depart from Me, you who are lawless." 00:09:11.48\00:09:15.52 In a translation, that's what it says. 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.42 "You who work iniquity--" 00:09:17.45\00:09:20.12 A lot of people just-- they want Jesus, 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.06 they want the benefits, they want the peace of mind. 00:09:22.09\00:09:24.16 They don't want to surrender their lives and obey. 00:09:24.19\00:09:28.06 "If you would enter into life, keep the commandments." 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.13 Jesus said, "If you love Me," do what? 00:09:30.17\00:09:33.30 "Keep My commandments." 00:09:33.34\00:09:35.30 Heard about this man that he had a drinking problem. 00:09:35.34\00:09:39.71 And he would come home drunk late every night, and his wife 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.61 would get so exasperated. 00:09:42.64\00:09:44.41 Had to be stumbling around the house. 00:09:44.45\00:09:45.78 She'd just lock him out. 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.75 And then he'd stand out there below their two-story house, and 00:09:47.78\00:09:50.55 he'd billow up to the window and say, "Honey, open up." 00:09:50.59\00:09:53.15 And all the neighbors would start waking up. 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.72 "Open up." 00:09:54.76\00:09:56.06 And then he'd always say, "I've got three words for you: 00:09:56.09\00:09:57.99 'I love you, I love you.'" 00:09:58.03\00:10:00.56 And she'd get tired of him bellowing out 00:10:00.60\00:10:02.70 there, and she'd go down, and she's surrender, 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.30 and she'd open the door. 00:10:04.33\00:10:05.70 This happened time and time again until one night she 00:10:05.73\00:10:07.87 couldn't take it anymore. 00:10:07.90\00:10:09.24 She'd locked him out. 00:10:09.27\00:10:10.57 He's out there on the street, waking up 00:10:10.61\00:10:12.24 the whole neighborhood. 00:10:12.27\00:10:13.61 "Three words: 'I love you, I love you.'" 00:10:13.64\00:10:15.81 She opened the door, decided to practice 00:10:15.84\00:10:18.18 some tough love, and she said, "I've got two words for you: 00:10:18.21\00:10:19.88 'Prove it,'" and she locked the door. 00:10:19.91\00:10:23.25 So, it's one thing to say, "I love you, Lord, I love you, 00:10:23.28\00:10:24.99 Lord," and a lot of Christians sing, "I love you, Lord, 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.32 I love you, Lord," but they don't obey Him. 00:10:27.36\00:10:30.79 The best way to show, "Obedience is better than sacrifice," 00:10:30.83\00:10:34.36 the Bible says. 00:10:34.40\00:10:35.73 The highest form of worship is to obey God, to do His will. 00:10:35.76\00:10:43.27 "Blessed are those who do His commandments." 00:10:43.30\00:10:45.27 I shared this with you earlier, Revelation 22:14, last chapter 00:10:45.31\00:10:47.78 in the Bible. 00:10:47.81\00:10:49.11 It is a prophecy subject. We don't understand this. 00:10:49.14\00:10:51.81 None of the mark of the beast and any of that is going to even 00:10:51.85\00:10:53.82 matter if you don't understand God wants a people 00:10:53.85\00:10:56.15 that will obey. 00:10:56.18\00:10:57.55 "Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep 00:10:57.59\00:11:00.06 the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus." 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.86 Revelation 14:12. 00:11:02.89\00:11:05.03 How is it possible to keep the commandments? 00:11:05.06\00:11:08.23 I mean, we're all weak. 00:11:08.26\00:11:09.90 We all struggle with sin and the devil and temptation every day, 00:11:09.93\00:11:13.47 but He can transform you. 00:11:13.50\00:11:15.64 Romans 8:3-4, Paul said, "God did this by sending His own Son. 00:11:15.67\00:11:21.51 He condemned sin in the flesh," meaning in us, "that the 00:11:21.54\00:11:24.88 righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us." 00:11:24.91\00:11:30.12 I came to the Lord, I had a terrible problem with cursing 00:11:30.15\00:11:33.82 and using God's name in vain, but the Holy Spirit came into my 00:11:33.86\00:11:36.39 mind; and through the power of Christ in me, I was able to get 00:11:36.42\00:11:40.13 the victory over that, and many other things. 00:11:40.16\00:11:43.90 And the Lord can give you the victory. 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.40 He can change you. 00:11:45.43\00:11:46.80 Don't underestimate the power of God. 00:11:46.84\00:11:49.04 "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the 00:11:49.07\00:11:51.74 day of Jesus Christ." 00:11:51.77\00:11:53.44 Philippians 1:6. 00:11:53.48\00:11:55.71 "I can do all things--" How many things? 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.91 "--all things through Christ who strengthens me." 00:11:57.95\00:12:02.22 Now, what is the old covenant; and why did it fail? 00:12:02.25\00:12:05.89 And I want to just illustrate something I think most 00:12:05.92\00:12:07.62 of us know. 00:12:07.66\00:12:08.99 We've got Bibles. 00:12:09.02\00:12:10.33 And in most normal Bibles, you've got your New Testament 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.76 and your Old Testament. 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.10 I just got lucky and grabbed right here, this is the New 00:12:14.10\00:12:17.00 Testament is about one-quarter of your Bible. 00:12:17.03\00:12:20.64 Old Testament--the word "testament" and "covenant" are 00:12:20.67\00:12:22.47 the same thing. 00:12:22.50\00:12:24.07 All of this is inspired. 00:12:24.11\00:12:26.64 People often call this the old covenant and this New Testament 00:12:26.68\00:12:28.48 our new covenant. 00:12:28.51\00:12:29.81 What does that mean? 00:12:29.84\00:12:31.15 What is that distinction all about? 00:12:31.18\00:12:33.38 The Bible tells us in Hebrews that the old covenant was 00:12:33.42\00:12:35.85 replaced by the new covenant, and I believe we are saved by 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.89 the new covenant. 00:12:38.92\00:12:41.99 Do you know how that goes? 00:12:42.02\00:12:43.43 By the way, where do you first find the--where do you find 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.29 the new covenant? 00:12:45.33\00:12:48.16 In the Old Testament. 00:12:48.20\00:12:50.50 In Jeremiah 31:31, it says, "A new covenant I will make with 00:12:50.53\00:12:53.37 the house of Israel after those days." 00:12:53.40\00:12:56.44 So, some people think that people are saved by 00:12:56.47\00:12:59.34 the old covenant. 00:12:59.37\00:13:01.28 Everybody's really saved by the new covenant, even the people in 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.75 the Old Testament. 00:13:03.78\00:13:06.48 I'm going to get to that in a little more detail here. 00:13:06.51\00:13:09.15 "So He declared to you His covenant that He commanded you 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.82 to perform, the Ten Commandments." 00:13:11.85\00:13:14.56 What is the covenant? 00:13:14.59\00:13:16.76 "The Ten Commandments: and He wrote them on 00:13:16.79\00:13:18.46 two tables of stone." 00:13:18.49\00:13:20.40 In the beginning, when the children of Israel heard God 00:13:20.43\00:13:22.53 proclaim His law--first, He proclaimed it. 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.23 If you're going to make a contract with someone, first you 00:13:25.27\00:13:26.84 get a verbal agreement. 00:13:26.87\00:13:28.37 When you both agree verbally, then you write it down. 00:13:28.40\00:13:30.21 Isn't that how you do it? 00:13:30.24\00:13:31.81 No sense--you go to a car dealership, you're going to go 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.38 back and forth haggling with the dealer. 00:13:34.41\00:13:36.08 When you finally agree on a number, then they write it down. 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.98 Then they do the contract. 00:13:38.01\00:13:39.45 They don't keep writing contracts. 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.58 And so, God pronounced His law audibly for the whole nation, 00:13:41.62\00:13:44.99 Ten Commandments. 00:13:45.02\00:13:46.55 The people said, "All the Lord has said, we will do." 00:13:46.59\00:13:48.22 They made a promise: "We will keep the covenant." 00:13:48.26\00:13:52.06 Well, while Moses was getting the written copy, they had a 00:13:52.09\00:13:55.43 wild party, they made a golden calf, they worshiped idols and 00:13:55.46\00:13:57.83 broke all the other commandments. 00:13:57.87\00:14:00.27 And the Bible says in Hebrews 8:8, "Because finding 00:14:00.30\00:14:03.47 fault with them--" 00:14:03.51\00:14:05.17 What was the fault of the old covenant? 00:14:05.21\00:14:06.84 Was it the law or the people? 00:14:06.88\00:14:09.78 They broke the terms of the covenant. 00:14:09.81\00:14:12.71 "Finding fault with them, He said, 'I'll make a new covenant 00:14:12.75\00:14:15.22 with the house of Israel.'" 00:14:15.25\00:14:16.82 By the way, who is the new covenant made with? 00:14:16.85\00:14:20.32 The house of Israel. 00:14:20.36\00:14:22.46 You find nowhere in the Bible it says, "I'll make a new covenant 00:14:22.49\00:14:24.66 with the Gentiles." 00:14:24.69\00:14:26.66 Everybody saved is saved through the covenant that He made with 00:14:26.70\00:14:28.93 the house of Israel. 00:14:28.96\00:14:30.33 That's who He makes the new covenant with. 00:14:30.37\00:14:32.20 But we, as Christians, are grafted into the stock 00:14:32.23\00:14:35.30 of Abraham. 00:14:35.34\00:14:36.71 We become Abraham's seed by faith, so Paul tells us in the 00:14:36.74\00:14:40.41 New Testament. 00:14:40.44\00:14:42.28 Upon what law is the new covenant based? 00:14:42.31\00:14:46.31 Same law. 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.08 Hebrews 8:10, "'For this is the covenant that I will make,' 00:14:48.12\00:14:51.02 says the Lord: 'I will put my law--'" 00:14:51.05\00:14:53.52 Now He's talking about the new covenant. 00:14:53.56\00:14:54.96 "'I'll put my law,'" same law, "'in their mind and write them 00:14:54.99\00:14:58.03 in their hearts.'" 00:14:58.06\00:14:59.56 It's the same law written in a different place. 00:14:59.59\00:15:03.53 See, for the Christian, it's not just the letter of the law; it's 00:15:03.57\00:15:06.43 the spirit of the law. 00:15:06.47\00:15:08.80 Christ, when He began teaching, He said, "It's not just the 00:15:08.84\00:15:11.74 action; it's the attitude." 00:15:11.77\00:15:14.94 It's not just the action of committing adultery. 00:15:14.98\00:15:17.38 Jesus said, "If you're thinking about adultery in your heart, 00:15:17.41\00:15:19.51 you're guilty of the attitude. 00:15:19.55\00:15:21.08 You're breaking the law." 00:15:21.12\00:15:22.58 He wants us to keep it in our lives and in our hearts, but 00:15:22.62\00:15:25.22 you've got to start in the heart, if it's going to be 00:15:25.25\00:15:27.59 kept in the life. 00:15:27.62\00:15:29.06 See what I'm saying? So, you need a new heart. 00:15:29.09\00:15:31.53 You can not only break the law, but it says murder by committing 00:15:31.56\00:15:35.40 homicide, but you can break it, Jesus said, by being angry with 00:15:35.43\00:15:38.73 your brother without a cause. 00:15:38.77\00:15:40.50 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:15:41.97\00:15:43.37 We'll be back in just a moment with the rest of today's 00:15:43.41\00:15:45.61 presentation. 00:15:45.64\00:15:47.01 Would you like to have better relationships? 00:15:47.04\00:15:49.51 Silly question, right? 00:15:49.54\00:15:51.11 You desire more joy and fulfillment in your life. 00:15:51.15\00:15:54.55 Are you seeking a closer walk with Jesus? 00:15:54.58\00:15:57.89 And how can you grow spiritually in today's hectic world? 00:15:57.92\00:16:00.76 What if told you that the answer to all of these questions can 00:16:00.79\00:16:04.99 surprisingly be found in the Ten Commandments? 00:16:05.03\00:16:08.63 Amazing Facts would like to share with you Part 1 of our 00:16:08.66\00:16:11.27 12-part series, "Laws of Love and Liberty." 00:16:11.30\00:16:15.44 In this stirring message, we explore the amazing riches that 00:16:15.47\00:16:19.01 can be mined from each and every commandment, revealing that 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.34 God's law is still a treasure trove of wisdom that offers 00:16:22.38\00:16:26.01 incredible proven solutions to the real-world problems 00:16:26.05\00:16:29.18 of everyday life. 00:16:29.22\00:16:31.02 To get your free copy, call the phone number on the screen and 00:16:31.05\00:16:33.79 ask for Offer #808 or visit the web address. 00:16:33.82\00:16:38.16 And after you read this incredible resource, be sure and 00:16:38.19\00:16:41.06 share it with a friend. 00:16:41.10\00:16:42.60 Let's return now to today's presentation and learn some more 00:16:42.63\00:16:45.70 amazing facts from the Word of God. 00:16:45.73\00:16:48.27 Doug: The new covenant is about the law of God in our 00:16:49.77\00:16:51.41 hearts, and then we'll keep it in our lives. 00:16:51.44\00:16:54.58 We'll be keeping the spirit; and once you keep the spirit, 00:16:54.61\00:16:56.91 you will automatically keep the letter. 00:16:56.95\00:16:59.01 Did that make sense? Thank you. 00:16:59.05\00:17:01.52 Doesn't living under grace and faith make keeping 00:17:01.55\00:17:04.35 the law non-essential? 00:17:04.39\00:17:06.62 No, it's actually the opposite. 00:17:06.65\00:17:09.39 Paul says in Romans 6:15, "What then? 00:17:09.42\00:17:12.06 Shall we sin because we're not under the law but under grace? 00:17:12.09\00:17:15.63 Certainly not! God forbid." 00:17:15.66\00:17:18.87 Romans 3:31, "Do we then make void the law through faith? 00:17:18.90\00:17:22.20 Certainly not!" 00:17:22.24\00:17:24.27 And the King James says, "God forbid. 00:17:24.31\00:17:26.21 On the contrary. It's the opposite. 00:17:26.24\00:17:28.11 We establish the law by faith in our lives." 00:17:28.14\00:17:32.81 Jesus said, "It's not the hearers of the law 00:17:32.85\00:17:34.22 that are just." 00:17:34.25\00:17:35.55 Or actually, Paul says this in Romans chapter 3--let me 00:17:35.58\00:17:38.92 see--chapter 2, verse 13. 00:17:38.95\00:17:40.62 "It is not the hearers of the law that are just before God, 00:17:40.66\00:17:42.99 but the doers of the law will be justified." 00:17:43.02\00:17:46.09 That's just so clear. 00:17:46.13\00:17:47.50 Christ said, "Think not that I've come to destroy the law or 00:17:47.50\00:17:49.33 the prophets. 00:17:49.36\00:17:50.67 Do not think this." 00:17:50.70\00:17:52.63 He said, "I did not come to destroy but fulfill." 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.64 And people think fulfill means that He kept it and now we 00:17:54.67\00:17:57.37 don't have to. 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.81 That's absurd. 00:17:58.84\00:18:00.31 The word "fulfill" does not mean take away. 00:18:00.34\00:18:02.68 It means to fill it full; otherwise, Jesus would be 00:18:02.71\00:18:05.45 saying, "Do not think that I came to destroy the law. 00:18:05.48\00:18:08.15 I did not come to destroy the law but to do away with it." 00:18:08.18\00:18:11.45 That wouldn't make any sense, would it? 00:18:11.49\00:18:13.56 Fulfill means to fulfill it in your life. 00:18:13.59\00:18:17.49 He said that the blessing is on those who do and teach it. 00:18:17.53\00:18:22.76 Are people saved by keeping the law? 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.40 No. 00:18:25.43\00:18:26.87 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, not of 00:18:26.90\00:18:29.67 yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, 00:18:29.70\00:18:33.27 lest any man should boast." 00:18:33.31\00:18:36.34 I remember one time when a policeman pulled me over, and I 00:18:36.38\00:18:42.45 actually passed him. 00:18:42.48\00:18:44.09 I was deep in thought, and I don't know what I was thinking. 00:18:44.12\00:18:46.09 I'd just come off a road where you drive 70 miles an hour. 00:18:46.12\00:18:48.76 Now I'm on another highway, and it's 50 miles an hour, and I 00:18:48.79\00:18:51.33 went zinging by a highway patrolman, while he was 00:18:51.36\00:18:53.13 following another car. 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.46 He had left that car, and he got behind me, and 00:18:54.50\00:18:56.00 he pulled me over. 00:18:56.03\00:18:57.60 And he said--you know, you see, I had places to go, people to 00:18:57.63\00:18:59.63 see, things to do. 00:18:59.67\00:19:01.07 I did not want to pull over; but when you see the blue and white 00:19:01.10\00:19:03.07 lights in the back, and you look at your--how many of you 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.24 automatically look at your speedometer when you see 00:19:06.27\00:19:08.41 a highway patrolman? 00:19:08.44\00:19:10.11 How many of you automatically take your foot off 00:19:10.15\00:19:11.78 the accelerator? 00:19:11.81\00:19:13.11 You're going five miles an hour, and you go--it's 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.75 a guilty conscience. 00:19:15.78\00:19:18.35 So, once I broke the law, I am under the law. 00:19:18.39\00:19:23.49 When you break it, you're under the law. 00:19:23.53\00:19:25.29 I did not want to pull over, but I had to pull over. 00:19:25.33\00:19:28.16 He came over to me, and I said, "Officer, can you please 00:19:28.20\00:19:31.57 have mercy? 00:19:31.60\00:19:33.00 I just came off the freeway. It was 70 miles an hour. 00:19:33.03\00:19:35.50 I wasn't paying attention. Please--" 00:19:35.54\00:19:36.87 He said, "You weren't going that fast, but I was 00:19:36.91\00:19:38.47 following someone, and you passed me." 00:19:38.51\00:19:41.44 I said, "I am so sorry." 00:19:41.48\00:19:43.81 Said, "You know, I've got to believe that you just 00:19:43.85\00:19:45.25 weren't thinking." 00:19:45.28\00:19:46.65 I said, "Have mercy." 00:19:46.68\00:19:47.98 I said, "My insurance rates are going to go up. 00:19:48.02\00:19:49.32 My wife's going to find out, and then you know how that goes." 00:19:49.35\00:19:51.89 And I said--he said, "Ah, yeah, okay." 00:19:51.92\00:19:54.56 So, he said, "I'll have mercy." 00:19:54.59\00:19:56.22 And I was so thankful because, you know, you get the feeling 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.29 when you get pulled over, and they walk back, and they check 00:19:58.33\00:19:59.93 your license plate, and they're taking little notes. 00:19:59.96\00:20:01.76 You're going, "Oh, man. 00:20:01.80\00:20:03.80 I've got to go to traffic school again," and all these things. 00:20:03.83\00:20:06.84 And when he came back over, he said, "Okay, I'm giving you 00:20:06.87\00:20:10.61 a warning. 00:20:10.64\00:20:12.04 It won't be on your record. Slow down." 00:20:12.07\00:20:15.31 I said, "Hallelujah." I was so thankful. 00:20:15.34\00:20:20.38 So, I thought, "Praise the Lord, I am no longer under the law. 00:20:20.42\00:20:23.32 I'm now under grace." 00:20:23.35\00:20:25.55 So, before he got back to his car, I revved my engine, and I 00:20:25.59\00:20:30.33 popped it into second, I let out the clutch, and I went peeling 00:20:30.36\00:20:32.93 away, spraying gravel all over his hood because I thought, 00:20:32.96\00:20:35.93 "I am not under the law; now I'm under grace." 00:20:35.96\00:20:38.60 And I went 90 miles an hour. 00:20:38.63\00:20:40.74 Is that what I did? 00:20:40.77\00:20:42.24 Oh, no. 00:20:42.27\00:20:43.84 I put on my blinker, and I looked both ways until there was 00:20:43.87\00:20:47.91 no cars for, you know, three miles in either direction, and 00:20:47.94\00:20:51.21 I crawled out onto the road, and I just putted along. 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.68 I waved to the policeman, goodbye. 00:20:53.72\00:20:56.32 Because he's shown me mercy, I am more careful than 00:20:56.35\00:20:59.19 anybody, right? 00:20:59.22\00:21:01.12 Because now I'm not under the law. 00:21:01.16\00:21:02.49 Now I'm under grace. 00:21:02.52\00:21:04.13 Out of gratitude and love, you obey. 00:21:04.16\00:21:07.50 What motivates a person to obey God's law? 00:21:07.56\00:21:10.70 Answer: "Therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." 00:21:10.73\00:21:16.07 When we love God, we will want to obey Him. 00:21:16.10\00:21:18.81 If you're having obedience problems, you're probably 00:21:18.84\00:21:20.48 having love problems. 00:21:20.51\00:21:21.98 You need to spend more time with Jesus in prayer and in the Word, 00:21:22.01\00:21:24.78 and that shapes you. 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.75 It gives you that strength. 00:21:26.78\00:21:28.12 It's through the Holy Spirit in your life, through being 00:21:28.15\00:21:31.75 connected and abiding in Christ. 00:21:31.79\00:21:33.29 "Whoever abides in Him sinneth not." 00:21:33.32\00:21:35.46 Whenever we get into trouble, we cease abiding. 00:21:35.49\00:21:37.83 We usually forget about the Lord and get in trouble. 00:21:37.86\00:21:40.83 "You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, 00:21:40.86\00:21:43.50 with all of your soul, with all of your mind." 00:21:43.53\00:21:45.87 It's through love. 00:21:45.90\00:21:47.54 "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments." 00:21:47.57\00:21:51.11 1 John 5, verse 3. 00:21:51.14\00:21:53.74 Do you know how quickly Christianity would spread if 00:21:53.78\00:21:55.64 Christians really started living different, if we were holy, if 00:21:55.68\00:22:00.28 we loved each other, we tried to live out the law of God 00:22:00.32\00:22:02.78 in our lives? 00:22:02.82\00:22:05.49 Are some Old Testament laws no longer binding upon New 00:22:05.52\00:22:08.66 Testament Christians? 00:22:08.69\00:22:10.26 Absolutely. 00:22:10.29\00:22:11.66 The Bible tells us what they are. 00:22:11.69\00:22:13.29 "Having abolished the law of commandments contained 00:22:13.33\00:22:15.46 in ordinances." 00:22:15.50\00:22:17.70 And it's Ephesians 2:15. 00:22:17.73\00:22:20.37 That's the yearly sabbaths, the meat offerings, 00:22:20.40\00:22:22.87 the drink offerings. 00:22:22.90\00:22:24.34 We don't have to sacrifice lambs anymore. 00:22:24.37\00:22:26.78 Circumcision is not required. 00:22:26.81\00:22:29.31 All these things came after sin. 00:22:29.34\00:22:31.38 Now catch this very important point. 00:22:31.41\00:22:35.52 Before the Ten Commandments were given on Mount Sinai, Exodus 20, 00:22:35.55\00:22:39.12 was it still wrong to kill, murder? 00:22:39.15\00:22:42.62 When Cain killed Abel, God said, "Sin lies at your door." 00:22:42.66\00:22:47.86 When Potiphar's wife, this Egyptian commander, when his 00:22:47.93\00:22:50.43 wife was trying to seduce Joseph, Joseph said, "How can I 00:22:50.47\00:22:53.23 do this thing and sin against God?" 00:22:53.27\00:22:55.54 Adultery was a sin, murder was a sin, lying was a sin. 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.11 The Ten Commandments have existed since before creation. 00:22:58.14\00:23:02.78 And so before there was sin, they didn't have 00:23:02.81\00:23:04.88 the ceremonial laws. 00:23:04.91\00:23:06.48 They didn't have circumcision. 00:23:06.51\00:23:07.82 Those things all came after sin. 00:23:07.85\00:23:09.25 But the Ten Commandments are part of God's nature. 00:23:09.28\00:23:11.75 It's always existed. 00:23:11.79\00:23:13.86 What are some of the glorious rewards of keeping God's law? 00:23:13.89\00:23:18.19 Well, there are many, friends. 00:23:18.23\00:23:19.63 For one thing, it says, John 15, verse 11, "These things I've 00:23:19.66\00:23:23.53 spoken to you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy 00:23:23.57\00:23:28.00 might be full." 00:23:28.04\00:23:29.67 People think, "Oh, I've got to keep the law. 00:23:29.70\00:23:31.27 I'll have no joy." 00:23:31.31\00:23:32.91 You know, I used to think that. 00:23:32.94\00:23:34.41 I'd like to be a Christian, but they're not allowed to 00:23:34.44\00:23:35.94 have any fun." 00:23:35.98\00:23:37.35 Because I had such a puny, corrupted idea of what fun was. 00:23:37.38\00:23:41.12 I thought fun was drinking, and smoking, and all these sins. 00:23:41.15\00:23:45.39 And I thought I can't party. 00:23:45.42\00:23:47.02 And God said, "Look, Doug, I'm not going to force you 00:23:47.06\00:23:49.26 to change. 00:23:49.29\00:23:50.66 You think that's fun? Keep having fun." 00:23:50.69\00:23:53.56 This is happening while I'm reading the Bible, you know? 00:23:53.60\00:23:56.16 And I'd got to a party. 00:23:56.20\00:23:57.67 I'd wake up hung over, throwing up, wake up in jail. 00:23:57.70\00:24:02.97 God said, "You having fun, Doug?" 00:24:03.00\00:24:06.71 I'd be smoking a cigarette, and a girl tells me kissing me is 00:24:06.74\00:24:09.08 like kissing an ashtray, and cigarette head falls off, while 00:24:09.11\00:24:13.52 I'm driving, in my lap, nearly wrecked the car, and wasting my 00:24:13.55\00:24:16.99 last five dollars, when I have no food, on cigarettes. 00:24:17.02\00:24:20.36 And God says, "Are you having fun, Doug?" 00:24:20.39\00:24:23.22 And I gradually realized that the things that God wants me 00:24:23.26\00:24:26.76 to do is what really brings the abundant life. 00:24:26.80\00:24:29.90 I have much more fun now than I did serving the devil. 00:24:29.93\00:24:33.20 It's a joy. 00:24:33.23\00:24:34.74 "Happy is he who keeps the law." 00:24:34.77\00:24:36.44 Proverbs 29, verse 18. 00:24:36.47\00:24:39.47 "Great peace have those that love Your law, and nothing will 00:24:39.51\00:24:43.98 cause them to stumble." 00:24:44.01\00:24:45.85 I remember hearing a story about this man that was driving too 00:24:45.88\00:24:50.62 quickly through a suburban neighborhood. 00:24:50.65\00:24:52.95 And he not only went crawling through a stop sign, 00:24:52.99\00:24:58.96 but he was speeding. 00:24:58.99\00:25:00.80 And sure enough, one of the local sheriffs saw him, and he 00:25:00.83\00:25:04.47 got out behind him, and he turned on his lights, and 00:25:04.50\00:25:07.30 eventually the man pulled over. 00:25:07.34\00:25:09.34 And he said, "Oh, man, I was in a hurry. 00:25:09.37\00:25:10.67 This is the last thing I need." 00:25:10.71\00:25:12.31 And so, he's a little agitated, and he sees the policeman 00:25:12.34\00:25:14.71 approaching his car. 00:25:14.74\00:25:16.08 He looks and he said, "I think I know that guy. 00:25:16.11\00:25:18.71 That's Fred. He goes to my church." 00:25:18.75\00:25:21.75 And Fred comes over, and he rolls down his window, and he 00:25:21.78\00:25:25.09 says, "Hi Fred." 00:25:25.12\00:25:26.49 He says, "Hi Bob." 00:25:26.52\00:25:28.12 He says, "Hey, Fred," says, "give me a break. 00:25:28.16\00:25:29.89 You know, I was in a hurry, and I've got places to go." 00:25:29.92\00:25:32.33 And he didn't say anything to him. 00:25:32.36\00:25:34.36 And he went behind his car, and he began to write, and, 00:25:34.36\00:25:37.57 oh, Bob got so mad. 00:25:37.60\00:25:39.90 He said, "You know, I wasn't going that fast." 00:25:39.93\00:25:42.64 And he said, as he's back to writing, he gets madder and 00:25:42.67\00:25:45.37 madder, and he rolls up his window, and he folds his arm. 00:25:45.41\00:25:48.04 His insurance rates are going to go up and, "I thought he was a 00:25:48.08\00:25:50.11 friend, and he could've let me off." 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.81 And he's thinking, "This is going to ruin my day." 00:25:51.85\00:25:53.45 And he's thinking about all these things. 00:25:53.48\00:25:55.68 And the policeman comes back over, and he taps his window, 00:25:55.72\00:25:58.62 and Bob just rolls down his window that much for him to drop 00:25:58.65\00:26:01.09 the ticket through. 00:26:01.12\00:26:03.83 And policeman pulls away. 00:26:03.86\00:26:07.76 And he takes the ticket to see, you know, what 00:26:07.76\00:26:09.33 the court date is. 00:26:09.36\00:26:10.67 And he looks. It's not a ticket. 00:26:10.70\00:26:12.17 It's a note, and the note said, "Bob, I lost my four-year-old 00:26:12.20\00:26:18.64 daughter to someone who was speeding three years ago." 00:26:18.67\00:26:23.58 Said, "I'm struggling to forgive that person. 00:26:23.61\00:26:26.35 Forgiving you today might help me in the healing process. 00:26:26.38\00:26:30.39 Please slow down." 00:26:30.42\00:26:33.89 Ooh, so how do you think he felt? 00:26:33.92\00:26:36.66 Did he speed away? 00:26:36.69\00:26:39.63 I mean, that's so many people in the world. 00:26:39.66\00:26:42.46 We forget how much Jesus has given, how much the Father has 00:26:42.50\00:26:46.10 paid in giving His Son, that we might be forgiven 00:26:46.13\00:26:49.14 for our lawlessness. 00:26:49.17\00:26:51.44 ¤¤¤ 00:26:52.01\00:26:55.34 announcer: Don't forget to request today's 00:26:55.54\00:26:57.48 life-changing free resource. 00:26:57.51\00:26:59.38 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail. 00:26:59.41\00:27:01.52 You can download a digital copy straight to your computer or 00:27:01.55\00:27:03.92 mobile device. 00:27:03.95\00:27:05.45 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, simply text 00:27:05.49\00:27:08.66 the key word on your screen to 40544, or visit the web address 00:27:08.69\00:27:13.26 shown on your screen. 00:27:13.29\00:27:15.03 And be sure to select the digital download option on the 00:27:15.06\00:27:17.37 request page. 00:27:17.40\00:27:18.77 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 00:27:18.80\00:27:21.94 Amazing Facts, wherever and whenever you want; 00:27:21.97\00:27:25.14 and most important, to share it with others. 00:27:25.17\00:27:27.74 female announcer: Have you ever skipped a meal? 00:27:29.21\00:27:30.85 Not a bad idea if you need to watch your waistline, but 00:27:30.88\00:27:33.42 there's a heavenly food you should never skip: God's Word. 00:27:33.45\00:27:36.95 Yet, how can you dive in daily when you're so busy? 00:27:36.99\00:27:39.95 Amazing Facts has you covered, and it's as easy as signing up 00:27:39.99\00:27:42.86 for our daily devotional and verse of the day, both sent 00:27:42.89\00:27:45.59 directly to your inbox, ready to bless, inspire, and inform you. 00:27:45.63\00:27:50.30 To start receiving the Amazing Facts daily devotional and verse 00:27:50.33\00:27:53.23 of the day, visit amazingfacts.org and click on 00:27:53.27\00:27:56.27 Bible Study in the main menu. 00:27:56.30\00:27:58.31 You'll be glad you did. 00:27:58.34\00:28:00.41 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's free offer. 00:28:04.81\00:28:06.95 It's sure to be a blessing. 00:28:06.98\00:28:08.88 And thank you for your continued support, as we take the gospel 00:28:08.92\00:28:11.75 of Jesus Christ to the world. 00:28:11.79\00:28:14.06 We hope you'll join us next week, as we delve deep into the 00:28:14.09\00:28:16.86 Word of God to explore more amazing facts. 00:28:16.89\00:28:20.13 announcer: This presentation was brought to you by the 00:28:24.00\00:28:25.73 friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:28:25.77\00:28:28.10
