male announcer: This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.50\00:00:03.70 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry. 00:00:03.80\00:00:06.27 Doug Batchelor: It was first called Salem, a small town 00:00:09.50\00:00:11.94 ruled by a king named Melchizedek about 1900 BC. 00:00:11.97\00:00:16.58 Today, Jerusalem is believed to be one of the most hotly 00:00:16.61\00:00:20.08 contested pieces of real estate in the world. 00:00:20.12\00:00:23.49 It's considered a holy place by Jews, Catholics, 00:00:23.52\00:00:26.49 Protestants, Muslims, and others. 00:00:26.52\00:00:29.42 The city has been destroyed through war 00:00:29.46\00:00:31.59 and rebuilt 27 times. 00:00:31.63\00:00:34.93 The amazing irony is that the word "Jerusalem," 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.50 pronounced Jeru-Shalom, means city of peace. 00:00:37.53\00:00:42.44 You know, the Bible teaches that God's people are on a pilgrimage 00:00:42.47\00:00:45.71 following Jesus to the new Jerusalem. 00:00:45.74\00:00:48.88 You can read in Hebrews 11:16, "But now they desire 00:00:48.91\00:00:52.41 a better country, that is, a heavenly country. 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.35 Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, 00:00:55.38\00:00:58.32 because He has prepared for them a city." 00:00:58.35\00:01:01.72 Today, we're going to do something special. 00:01:01.76\00:01:03.63 We're going to join some friends in old Jerusalem and hear 00:01:03.66\00:01:06.80 a message about walking with Jesus to the new Jerusalem. 00:01:06.83\00:01:10.93 Doug: I'm very thankful to be here with you. 00:01:14.97\00:01:17.27 And I appreciate so much all the work and preparation our friends 00:01:17.31\00:01:21.08 from the TBN studios have done here in Jerusalem. 00:01:21.11\00:01:24.08 And we praise God for this beautiful location, where we can 00:01:24.11\00:01:28.28 just absorb the blessings of being here in the Promised Land. 00:01:28.32\00:01:32.79 How many of you have never been in Jerusalem until this trip? 00:01:32.82\00:01:36.26 Quite a few, isn't this exciting? 00:01:36.29\00:01:39.69 One of my favorite stories is in this message we call 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.76 "Back to Jerusalem." 00:01:42.80\00:01:44.53 I thought that would be appropriate. 00:01:44.57\00:01:46.10 And you only find it in one gospel. 00:01:46.13\00:01:47.90 It's in the Gospel of Luke chapter 24, last chapter. 00:01:47.94\00:01:51.81 And it begins in verse 13. 00:01:51.84\00:01:53.61 Now, just to give you the background, it takes place 00:01:53.64\00:01:56.51 after that very dreadful and sad afternoon 00:01:56.54\00:02:01.32 where Jesus is crucified. 00:02:01.35\00:02:03.42 Now, it's good news for you and I, but for the disciples, 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.65 it was absolute devastation because they had 00:02:05.69\00:02:08.36 a whole different picture of what the Messiah 00:02:08.39\00:02:10.33 was going to do. 00:02:10.36\00:02:12.23 And when they saw Jesus crucified and dead, and witness 00:02:12.26\00:02:15.23 Him being laid in a tomb, all their hopes 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.97 were completely dashed. 00:02:18.00\00:02:20.50 And after spending the Sabbath together in Jerusalem, some of 00:02:20.54\00:02:26.14 the disciples began to migrate back to their hometowns. 00:02:26.17\00:02:30.21 And that's where we pick up our story. 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.31 Luke chapter 24, verse 13, "Now, two of them were traveling 00:02:32.35\00:02:36.69 that same day to a village called Emmaus, 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.75 which is about seven miles from Jerusalem. 00:02:39.79\00:02:42.39 And they talked together of these things that had happened. 00:02:42.42\00:02:45.53 And it was, while they conversed and reasoned, 00:02:45.56\00:02:48.36 that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 00:02:48.40\00:02:52.10 But their eyes were restrained, that they did not know Him." 00:02:52.13\00:02:56.14 Now, as they're walking down the road, they're suddenly joined 00:02:56.17\00:03:00.31 by a stranger that comes alongside of them. 00:03:00.34\00:03:03.85 And that wasn't uncommon, they used to like to travel together 00:03:03.88\00:03:06.41 for safety back then. 00:03:06.45\00:03:07.75 So, they're commiserating with each other 00:03:07.78\00:03:09.82 about the terrible thing that had happened. 00:03:09.85\00:03:12.15 And as they're going, He just kind of walks alongside. 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.82 And He listens for a while, He doesn't reveal Who He is. 00:03:14.86\00:03:18.26 And then finally, He can't hold Himself back anymore, 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.93 and He says-- they don't know Who He is, 00:03:20.96\00:03:22.93 they don't recognize Him. 00:03:22.96\00:03:24.67 It says they should not know Him, their eyes were restrained. 00:03:24.70\00:03:29.04 And He said, "What kind of conversation is this you have 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.34 one with another as you walk and are sad?" 00:03:31.37\00:03:34.34 Now, what does that tell us right away? 00:03:34.38\00:03:36.58 Does Jesus want us to have a sad walk? 00:03:36.61\00:03:40.52 What does the word "gospel" mean? 00:03:40.55\00:03:43.18 Good news. 00:03:43.22\00:03:45.09 And what does the word "good news" mean? 00:03:45.12\00:03:47.36 Something that's happy, something that's joyful. 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.79 Christians ought to be the happiest people 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.36 in the world, right? 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.16 And so, He basically chastises them and says, "What kind of 00:03:53.19\00:03:57.07 conversation is this as you walk and are sad?" 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.73 Now, don't miss this important point. 00:03:59.77\00:04:02.14 There's a connection between their not knowing Him 00:04:02.17\00:04:06.14 and their being sad. 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.18 It says they did not know Him and they were sad. 00:04:08.21\00:04:11.51 So, at the end of the story, you're going to see that all 00:04:11.55\00:04:13.88 changes, and you'll figure out what it is that changes it. 00:04:13.92\00:04:16.25 So, they're walking along and He says, "What is this?" 00:04:16.28\00:04:19.62 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, he's mentioned also 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.92 in the book of Acts, "He answered and he said to Him, 00:04:21.96\00:04:25.33 'Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?'" 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.30 What a thing to say to Jesus. 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.23 "'And have you not known the things that are happened 00:04:29.26\00:04:31.20 there in these days?' 00:04:31.23\00:04:33.17 And He said, 'What things?'" 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.20 Now, does God ask questions because He doesn't know, 00:04:35.24\00:04:37.44 or does He ask questions 'cause He wants us to think? 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.18 And sometimes He draws us out with our own--His own questions. 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.04 He said to Adam, "Where are you?" 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.01 Well, He knew where Adam was. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.75 He said to the disciples, "What were you arguing about on your 00:04:46.78\00:04:49.72 way to the upper room?" 00:04:49.75\00:04:51.45 He knew what they were arguing about, 00:04:51.49\00:04:53.39 which of them was greatest. 00:04:53.42\00:04:55.26 And so, Cleopas says, "Are You only a stranger in Jerusalem?" 00:04:55.29\00:04:59.46 You know, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, not far away. 00:04:59.49\00:05:03.06 And He was dedicated in Jerusalem. 00:05:03.10\00:05:06.53 He came 12 years old and taught and asked questions 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.80 in the temple. 00:05:09.84\00:05:11.81 He had been teaching and preaching 00:05:11.84\00:05:13.58 for 3 1/2 years in Jerusalem. 00:05:13.61\00:05:15.54 And so, it was a strange thing to ask Him. 00:05:15.58\00:05:19.68 And He says, "What things?" 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.65 They said, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, Who was a prophet 00:05:21.68\00:05:24.45 mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. 00:05:24.49\00:05:27.92 And how the chief priests and all of our rulers delivered Him 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.73 to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 00:05:30.76\00:05:33.86 But we were hoping that He would be the one 00:05:33.90\00:05:36.46 that would deliver Israel." 00:05:36.50\00:05:38.20 Now, what does that mean when they say, "We were hoping"? 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.57 That's past tense, isn't it? 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.90 What had happened to their hope? 00:05:42.94\00:05:45.54 It had been destroyed. 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.01 "And finally Jesus said to them, 'O fools and slow of heart 00:05:48.04\00:05:52.41 to believe that all the prophets have spoken! 00:05:52.45\00:05:54.95 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things 00:05:54.98\00:05:57.42 and entered into His glory?'" 00:05:57.45\00:05:59.39 And notice this, "Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, 00:05:59.42\00:06:04.03 He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures 00:06:04.06\00:06:07.20 the things concerning Himself." 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.80 Now, how much of the Bible was written at that point? 00:06:09.83\00:06:14.67 Just the Old Testament. 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.50 And so, what does He do? 00:06:16.54\00:06:18.21 He expounds in all the Scriptures, speaking of 00:06:18.24\00:06:19.97 the Old Testament Scriptures, things concerning Himself. 00:06:20.01\00:06:23.45 What are the Scriptures talking about? 00:06:23.48\00:06:26.41 The Old Testament is principally pointing us to Jesus. 00:06:26.45\00:06:31.02 When you read in the Bible about Adam, on the sixth day he goes 00:06:31.05\00:06:37.06 to sleep, His side is opened up, and a wife is born. 00:06:37.09\00:06:42.63 Jesus on the sixth day of the week, hung on the cross, 00:06:42.66\00:06:45.90 He said, "It is finished," He went to sleep, His side 00:06:45.93\00:06:48.74 was opened up, and the church was born. 00:06:48.77\00:06:51.97 When you read in the Bible about Abraham going up the mountain 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.28 with Isaac, and Isaac has the wood on his back, and Isaac 00:06:55.31\00:06:58.68 says, "Father, we've got the--we've got the wood 00:06:58.71\00:07:01.65 and we've got what it takes to make the fire, 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.59 but where is the lamb?" 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.59 And Abraham says, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb." 00:07:05.62\00:07:10.46 Isaac is the son of Abraham, and he's a willing sacrifice 00:07:10.49\00:07:14.50 when they get to the top of the mountain. 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.70 And just before the knife comes down, the angel stops Abraham 00:07:16.73\00:07:21.07 and directs him to a ram who's caught in the-- 00:07:21.10\00:07:26.34 in a thicket by a crown of thorns. 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.64 It's a ram with a crown of thorns in a thorn bush. 00:07:28.68\00:07:32.28 He's a type of Christ. 00:07:32.31\00:07:34.22 When you read in the Bible about Samson, who is standing, 00:07:34.25\00:07:37.29 and the last act of his life, he says, "Let me die." 00:07:37.32\00:07:42.06 He stretches out his hands and he brings down 00:07:42.09\00:07:44.93 the temple of Dagon. 00:07:44.96\00:07:47.03 He lays down his life to save God's people from their enemies. 00:07:47.03\00:07:49.96 That is a type of Christ. 00:07:50.00\00:07:51.80 Matter of fact, you can go from cover to cover in the Bible, and 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.44 if you read about Gideon, if you read about any of the prophets, 00:07:54.47\00:07:57.97 if you read about Esther, they're all telling us 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.44 something about Jesus. 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.81 And so, the Bible is an amazing book. 00:08:02.84\00:08:05.08 It says He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things 00:08:05.11\00:08:07.95 concerning Himself. 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.78 Now, I'm going to do something I don't often do. 00:08:09.82\00:08:11.72 You name an Old Testament story. 00:08:11.75\00:08:14.99 You can call it out. 00:08:15.02\00:08:16.59 Name an Old Testament character. 00:08:16.62\00:08:19.39 Noah. 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.00 All right, the Bible tells us that Noah found grace, 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.50 we find grace through Jesus, that there was only one 00:08:23.53\00:08:26.47 way to be saved in the days of Noah. 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.64 You had to go through the door. 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.14 Jesus said, "I am the door." 00:08:30.17\00:08:31.77 And it was through going in the side of that ark 00:08:31.81\00:08:34.34 that they found life. 00:08:34.38\00:08:36.51 And the whole world was repopulated 00:08:36.54\00:08:38.75 or recreated through Noah. 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.78 It is through Christ the whole world is repopulated. 00:08:40.82\00:08:44.42 Jesus is in the story of Noah. 00:08:44.45\00:08:46.42 The gospel of salvation is in the story of Noah. 00:08:46.45\00:08:49.06 They are saved through grace. 00:08:49.09\00:08:50.76 Noah found grace. 00:08:50.79\00:08:53.06 I want to give you a chance for more stories, name another one. 00:08:53.09\00:08:56.03 Solomon. 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.97 Solomon is the son of David. 00:08:58.00\00:08:59.90 Jesus is the Son of David. 00:08:59.93\00:09:01.67 Solomon is the king of peace. 00:09:01.70\00:09:03.14 Jesus is the son of peace. 00:09:03.17\00:09:04.77 Solomon is the wisest of those who had ever lived. 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.74 Jesus is the wisest. 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.78 Solomon is the richest, Jesus is the richest. 00:09:08.81\00:09:10.98 Solomon was the king of Jerusalem in its highest glory. 00:09:11.01\00:09:14.75 Jesus is the king of the new Jerusalem in the ultimate glory. 00:09:14.78\00:09:18.85 And you can go on and on and find, you know, 00:09:18.89\00:09:22.26 the examples of Jesus in the story of Solomon. 00:09:22.29\00:09:24.63 There was a battle before Solomon was king. 00:09:24.66\00:09:27.10 Someone tried to take the throne from him. 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.76 And yeah, in the same way there's a battle trying 00:09:29.80\00:09:32.53 to take the throne from Jesus. 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.37 Someone else. 00:09:34.40\00:09:36.67 Daniel, all right, let's say-- 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.34 I heard Daniel, young man over here. 00:09:38.37\00:09:40.64 Daniel was never married. 00:09:40.68\00:09:42.71 I won't go into the details, but trust me, he was never married. 00:09:42.74\00:09:46.51 And the Bible tells us that spies followed Daniel around to 00:09:46.55\00:09:51.15 find something wrong with him because the king thought 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.22 to set him over the whole realm. 00:09:53.25\00:09:55.39 And they tried to find some occasion. 00:09:55.42\00:09:57.13 Did spies follow Jesus around? 00:09:57.16\00:09:59.69 The Bible tells us that finally they made a law, they brought 00:09:59.73\00:10:03.50 an accusation against Daniel, saying that he was breaking 00:10:03.53\00:10:06.17 the law of the king. 00:10:06.20\00:10:07.94 It was a false accusation. 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.70 Daniel was willing to die rather than deny 00:10:09.74\00:10:11.77 his relationship with God. 00:10:11.81\00:10:13.48 Jesus, more than anything He said, "Not My will, 00:10:13.51\00:10:16.11 Thy will be done." 00:10:16.14\00:10:17.85 God was first. 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.78 Daniel prayed, and then he went to the lion's den. 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.15 Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, which you can see 00:10:22.18\00:10:24.95 not too far away over there on the Mount of Olives. 00:10:24.99\00:10:29.49 Jesus prayed there, and then He went to the cross. 00:10:29.52\00:10:32.66 They took Jesus from the cross, and they put Him in a tomb, 00:10:32.69\00:10:34.93 and they sealed it with a government seal. 00:10:34.93\00:10:37.60 But the devil couldn't keep Him there. 00:10:37.63\00:10:39.67 Daniel was placed in a tomb, in a hole in the ground full of 00:10:39.70\00:10:42.94 lions, a stone was placed over the mouth, a government seal. 00:10:42.97\00:10:48.38 But Jesus came out alive. 00:10:48.41\00:10:50.38 And the lions, the devil is like a roaring lion, going around 00:10:50.41\00:10:53.11 seeking whom he might devour. 00:10:53.15\00:10:55.08 The lion could not keep Daniel. 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.39 The devil could not keep Jesus, amen? 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.89 I heard some other Bible stories. 00:11:00.92\00:11:03.22 Oh, you're getting excited now. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.06 Joseph I heard, okay. 00:11:05.09\00:11:06.66 Now I get to pick the ones I like. 00:11:06.70\00:11:10.33 Joseph, oh. 00:11:10.37\00:11:12.50 It's like Paul says, "What shall I more say?" 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.80 For time would fail me to tell you of Joseph. 00:11:15.84\00:11:18.91 Here you have the beloved son of an ancient patriarch. 00:11:18.94\00:11:24.01 God is called the ancient of days. 00:11:24.05\00:11:26.41 And he gives him a special robe. 00:11:26.45\00:11:30.12 The brothers, he comes seeking their welfare. 00:11:30.15\00:11:32.95 The brothers are missing, he comes to seek his lost brothers 00:11:32.99\00:11:35.89 sent by the father. 00:11:35.92\00:11:37.89 Jesus is sent by the Father to come and seek and save the lost. 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.16 They take him, they throw him in a pit. 00:11:41.20\00:11:44.77 Jesus is put in a tomb. 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.94 They sell him as a slave for silver. 00:11:46.97\00:11:49.57 Now, it's true Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver 00:11:49.60\00:11:52.31 and Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. 00:11:52.34\00:11:54.51 And you might be thinking, "Pastor Doug, that doesn't fit." 00:11:54.54\00:11:56.85 But you got to keep in mind over 1,000 years go by and there's 00:11:56.88\00:11:59.15 inflation in the price of a slave between the time of Joseph 00:11:59.18\00:12:03.18 and the time of Judas. 00:12:03.22\00:12:05.82 And He goes down to Egypt. 00:12:05.85\00:12:07.86 Did Jesus also go down, spend some time in Egypt? 00:12:07.89\00:12:12.16 And He's betrayed by one of the 12. 00:12:12.19\00:12:16.20 They think it was Simeon that was the ringleader 00:12:16.23\00:12:18.63 and the one that wanted to kill Joseph. 00:12:18.67\00:12:21.64 His brothers finally come seeking bread from him, 00:12:21.67\00:12:25.37 but He doesn't reveal Himself to them. 00:12:25.41\00:12:28.18 He speaks through a translator even though He understands 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.45 everything they're saying 'cause He speaks 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.48 perfect Hebrew, Aramaic. 00:12:32.51\00:12:34.45 They don't know that He's hearing everything. 00:12:34.48\00:12:36.45 They don't recognize Him. 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.12 The Bible says, "Jesus came unto His own, 00:12:38.15\00:12:40.02 and His own received Him not." 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.76 So often we don't recognize Him. 00:12:41.79\00:12:43.73 In the story of Emmaus, He's walking right with 00:12:43.76\00:12:45.66 His disciples, and they don't know Him. 00:12:45.69\00:12:48.46 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.23 We'll be back in just a moment with the rest 00:12:50.27\00:12:51.97 of today's presentation. 00:12:52.00\00:12:53.84 No, the Bible never says that Eve ate an apple, nor does it 00:12:53.87\00:12:57.94 say that three wise men came to see Jesus in the manger. 00:12:57.97\00:13:02.24 Neither does the Bible say that God made a devil. 00:13:02.28\00:13:05.78 So, how well do you know your Bible? 00:13:05.81\00:13:08.25 And what does it really say about heaven and hell, 00:13:08.28\00:13:11.25 the origin of the devil, and the Second Coming of Jesus?" 00:13:11.29\00:13:14.62 There are so many common misunderstandings 00:13:14.66\00:13:16.79 about the Word of God. 00:13:16.83\00:13:18.69 That's why Amazing Facts wants to send you a 00:13:58.40\00:14:02.97 Doug: Here he was, he came unto them as-- 00:14:03.00\00:14:06.17 he was their brother, seeking them. 00:14:06.21\00:14:08.24 They thought he was just a shepherd. 00:14:08.28\00:14:10.18 At the end of the story of Joseph, he is the king. 00:14:10.21\00:14:12.31 He's second only to the king. 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.18 They didn't know who he was. 00:14:14.22\00:14:16.12 Jesus is second to the Father. 00:14:16.15\00:14:17.89 They didn't know Who He was. 00:14:17.92\00:14:19.89 He indeed is one with God as you know, but I mean, 00:14:19.92\00:14:22.46 He makes Himself subjected to the Father. 00:14:22.49\00:14:26.16 Joseph reveals himself to his brothers at a feast. 00:14:26.19\00:14:29.50 He sits down with 12. 00:14:29.53\00:14:31.87 He puts them all out. 00:14:31.90\00:14:33.77 There's a cup in the story that is a test. 00:14:33.80\00:14:37.27 And Jesus says, "Take this cup." 00:14:37.31\00:14:39.54 And it talks about bread at that dinner. 00:14:39.57\00:14:41.88 Jesus says, "There's a cup and there's bread." 00:14:41.91\00:14:44.25 And you know, the first thing that Joseph says when he 00:14:44.28\00:14:46.15 finally--he tests them and he puts his cup in Benjamin's sack, 00:14:46.18\00:14:52.12 and then he has his soldiers arrest him and say, 00:14:52.15\00:14:54.26 "Oh, Benjamin's got to be my slave." 00:14:54.29\00:14:56.12 And he wants to know, have you really learned anything? 00:14:56.16\00:14:58.03 Are you still the jealous, conniving brothers I knew, 00:14:58.06\00:15:00.86 you know, 25, 30 years ago? 00:15:00.90\00:15:03.33 Oh, by the way, when did Jesus begin His ministry? 00:15:03.37\00:15:06.57 He was baptized at 30 years of age. 00:15:06.60\00:15:08.44 When did Joseph go out to rule over Egypt? 00:15:08.47\00:15:10.91 At 30. 00:15:10.94\00:15:12.61 How old was David when he began to reign over Hebron 00:15:12.64\00:15:14.51 and then later Jerusalem? 00:15:14.54\00:15:16.24 Thirty. 00:15:16.28\00:15:18.18 They're types of Christ. 00:15:18.21\00:15:20.05 And so, Joseph says, "I'm going to arrest Benjamin. 00:15:20.08\00:15:22.35 You guys can go home." 00:15:22.38\00:15:24.29 And Judah says, "No, I've offered to lay myself down 00:15:24.32\00:15:26.42 for my brother." 00:15:26.45\00:15:28.22 He comes to Joseph and he pours out his heart. 00:15:28.26\00:15:29.89 He said, "Our father will be brokenhearted 00:15:29.92\00:15:32.76 if we don't come back with his son. 00:15:32.79\00:15:34.60 He loves his son so much. 00:15:34.63\00:15:36.87 And I've told my father that I will be a substitute." 00:15:36.90\00:15:40.17 Now, Judah's from what tribe? 00:15:40.20\00:15:42.27 That's a trick question. 00:15:42.30\00:15:44.14 Who's in Grant's tomb? 00:15:44.17\00:15:46.74 So, Judah of course is the tribe of Judah. 00:15:46.78\00:15:48.58 What tribe does Jesus come from? 00:15:48.61\00:15:50.58 Tribe of Judah. 00:15:50.61\00:15:52.21 Judah intercedes, he offers himself. 00:15:52.25\00:15:53.85 He says to Joseph, "Take me. 00:15:53.88\00:15:55.55 How can I go home and see my father brought down to the 00:15:55.58\00:15:58.39 grave, his grey hairs brought down to the grave with sorrow?" 00:15:58.42\00:16:02.22 Joseph can't take it anymore, he says, "These men have changed. 00:16:02.26\00:16:04.56 They've spent years regretting what they did to me." 00:16:04.59\00:16:07.40 And instead of getting even-- he has the power to get even. 00:16:07.40\00:16:10.47 He has--and they are guilty. 00:16:10.50\00:16:12.97 They were going to kill him, and then they sold him as a slave, 00:16:13.00\00:16:16.00 where he suffered. 00:16:16.04\00:16:17.44 He suffered in prison. 00:16:17.47\00:16:19.04 Was Jesus in prison? 00:16:19.07\00:16:20.88 He forgives them. 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.38 What does Jesus do for us? 00:16:22.41\00:16:24.31 He not only forgives Him, he feeds them with bread. 00:16:24.35\00:16:28.22 And he reveals himself to his brothers. 00:16:28.25\00:16:29.92 And I want to get to heaven, I want to see this DVD 00:16:29.95\00:16:31.65 when I get there. 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.66 I want to see the look on their faces when finally he says to 00:16:33.69\00:16:37.33 them--he begins to sob and weep after Joseph reveals himself. 00:16:37.36\00:16:42.50 And they're wondering what's happened to this ruler of Egypt 00:16:42.53\00:16:45.97 that's just having a meltdown. 00:16:46.00\00:16:48.20 And then he sobs out in their language for the first time, 00:16:48.24\00:16:51.84 "I am Joseph." 00:16:51.87\00:16:53.98 Doesn't Jesus say, "I am"? 00:16:54.01\00:16:56.68 And God says, "I am that I am." 00:16:56.71\00:16:59.65 Jesus says, "Before Abraham was, I am." 00:16:59.68\00:17:04.42 And the look on the brother's face when he says, 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.52 "I am Joseph," they must have thought, 00:17:06.55\00:17:08.99 "Oh, it's curtains now." 00:17:09.02\00:17:12.29 But he says, "Is my father yet alive?" 00:17:12.33\00:17:15.93 More than anything, he was brokenhearted 00:17:15.96\00:17:18.73 because of the separation with the father. 00:17:18.77\00:17:20.97 And I love the way the book Genesis ends, when you see 00:17:21.00\00:17:23.27 the father and the son finally meeting, and you hear the news 00:17:23.30\00:17:26.64 of Jacob when he gets the news Joseph lives. 00:17:26.68\00:17:30.38 And his heart stops, and he sees the wagon train full of gifts 00:17:30.41\00:17:34.22 coming from Egypt, then he believes. 00:17:34.25\00:17:36.48 When he saw the gifts, then he believed. 00:17:36.52\00:17:38.52 At Pentecost, people saw the gifts, and then they believe. 00:17:38.55\00:17:41.72 And so, you see the gospel story in Joseph? 00:17:41.76\00:17:44.69 So, Jesus Himself, He's walking down the road. 00:17:44.73\00:17:48.40 And as they're going down the road and He's opening 00:17:48.43\00:17:50.53 the Scriptures for them, they are just overwhelmed. 00:17:50.57\00:17:53.84 They're thinking, "'Wow, we've never heard anything like this. 00:17:53.87\00:17:56.67 You mean to tell us that everything that happened 00:17:56.71\00:17:58.57 was part of God's will?' 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.41 And they drew near the village where they were going, 00:18:00.44\00:18:02.84 and he indicated that he would have gone further. 00:18:02.88\00:18:05.51 But they constrained Him, they begged Him, 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.32 'Please abide with us.'" 00:18:07.35\00:18:09.05 Have you heard that song, "Abide with Me, 00:18:09.08\00:18:10.75 for fast falls the eventide"? 00:18:10.79\00:18:12.65 It's based on this verse. 00:18:12.69\00:18:14.36 It's toward evening and the day is far spent. 00:18:14.39\00:18:16.32 He would have kept going, but they asked Him in. 00:18:16.36\00:18:19.36 Do you know we need to ask Jesus, don't we? 00:18:19.39\00:18:21.36 Every day, we need to ask Him in. 00:18:21.40\00:18:23.40 He'll come, and He will not force Himself into your life. 00:18:23.43\00:18:26.57 "And as they come and sit at the table, He took the bread, 00:18:26.60\00:18:30.37 and He blessed it." 00:18:30.41\00:18:32.24 He said that prayer that Malcolm shared with us last night, 00:18:32.27\00:18:34.58 "B'ruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam 00:18:34.61\00:18:37.95 hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz." 00:18:37.98\00:18:40.05 That's I'm sure a corrupt English or American version, 00:18:40.08\00:18:42.85 but He broke the bread, He blessed it. 00:18:42.88\00:18:45.59 And it says when He broke the bread, their eyes were opened, 00:18:45.62\00:18:49.36 and they knew Him. 00:18:49.39\00:18:52.59 He was known in the breaking of bread. 00:18:52.63\00:18:55.90 How are we going to know that Jesus is Who He says He is? 00:18:55.93\00:18:58.77 It's in the breaking of bread. 00:18:58.80\00:19:01.14 And after He revealed Himself, then He disappears 'cause He 00:19:01.17\00:19:04.54 wants them to know Him from the bread, not because they see. 00:19:04.57\00:19:07.91 He says, "Blessed are those who believe without seeing." 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.18 They are so excited, they cannot constrain themself. 00:19:10.21\00:19:12.61 They've just walked seven miles downhill to--by the way, 00:19:12.65\00:19:15.55 notice they're going--they're back to Jerusalem down 00:19:15.58\00:19:19.79 to Emmaus, which means hot water. 00:19:19.82\00:19:21.82 They're going from the city of peace to hot water, and Jesus 00:19:21.86\00:19:24.19 saves them from hot water, and they go back 00:19:24.23\00:19:26.49 to the city of peace. 00:19:26.53\00:19:28.56 And it's night now, and they're going uphill. 00:19:28.60\00:19:30.83 But they are happier going uphill now in the dark with 00:19:30.87\00:19:35.50 Jesus, knowing He's alive, than they were going downhill 00:19:35.54\00:19:38.57 in the daytime, thinking they were alone. 00:19:38.61\00:19:41.84 And when they get to the upper room and they say, 00:19:41.88\00:19:43.81 "Jesus is alive, and He's appeared to Simon." 00:19:43.85\00:19:46.35 They can't wait to share these news with them, they said, 00:19:46.38\00:19:48.78 "He was known to us in the breaking of bread." 00:19:48.82\00:19:51.79 As they are talking about Jesus, He stood in their midst. 00:19:51.82\00:19:55.62 Christ said, "Where two or three are gathered in My name, 00:19:55.66\00:19:57.69 I am there among them." 00:19:57.73\00:19:59.73 Do you know as you talk to others about Jesus, 00:19:59.76\00:20:01.33 He draws near? 00:20:01.36\00:20:03.16 When did He draw near to them in the story of Emmaus? 00:20:03.20\00:20:05.37 As they were walking down the road talking about Jesus, 00:20:05.40\00:20:07.34 He drew near. 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.20 Now, they're in the upper room talking about Jesus, 00:20:09.24\00:20:11.34 and He draws near. 00:20:11.37\00:20:12.87 You notice Jesus will be with you when you're gathered 00:20:12.91\00:20:14.68 together with the other believers. 00:20:14.71\00:20:16.85 And He will be with you on the way as you're walking 00:20:16.88\00:20:19.78 down the road. 00:20:19.81\00:20:21.35 He wants you to be witness not only in the upper room, He wants 00:20:21.38\00:20:24.05 you to be a witness--they were sad walking down the road. 00:20:24.09\00:20:27.26 They weren't converting anybody walking down the road. 00:20:27.29\00:20:29.52 Jesus said, "What's this deal, you're so sad?" 00:20:29.56\00:20:33.33 Spurgeon used to teach preachers. 00:20:33.36\00:20:35.63 And He said to the preachers, He said, "When you preach, 00:20:35.66\00:20:39.40 your face ought to reflect the subject you're talking about." 00:20:39.43\00:20:44.51 Said, "If you're talking about heaven, your eyes ought 00:20:44.54\00:20:46.37 to sparkle as you talk about the golden streets, and your face 00:20:46.41\00:20:49.44 should shine as you talk about the pearly gates." 00:20:49.48\00:20:51.98 And He said, "If you happen to be preaching about hell, 00:20:52.01\00:20:53.88 just use your everyday, normal expression." 00:20:53.92\00:20:57.69 Unfortunately, sometimes Christians don't look like 00:20:57.72\00:21:02.12 the gospel is good news. 00:21:02.16\00:21:04.19 And we'd do a lot more to reach people if we were happier 00:21:04.23\00:21:07.20 about what we believe. 00:21:07.23\00:21:09.50 And then they couldn't believe it. 00:21:09.53\00:21:11.20 While they're talking about Jesus, He appears. 00:21:11.23\00:21:13.94 And they were terrified and frightened, 00:21:13.97\00:21:15.80 and thought they saw a ghost. 00:21:15.84\00:21:17.71 Now, I want you to think about this. 00:21:17.74\00:21:19.87 When they went down the road, He was with them, they saw Him. 00:21:19.91\00:21:23.24 When He went up the road, He was still with them. 00:21:23.28\00:21:26.51 You can read in the book "Desire of Ages," 00:21:26.55\00:21:28.28 it says He was with them going up. 00:21:28.32\00:21:30.09 When they entered the upper room, 00:21:30.12\00:21:31.62 He entered invisible with them. 00:21:31.65\00:21:33.36 He didn't break through the door, He didn't go through 00:21:33.39\00:21:35.16 the walls like a ghost. 00:21:35.19\00:21:37.66 He went with them, they just didn't know He was with them 00:21:37.69\00:21:40.16 the whole time. 00:21:40.20\00:21:41.90 How often do we forget that Christ is with us 00:21:41.93\00:21:44.77 wherever we go? 00:21:44.80\00:21:46.74 And then sometimes we're afraid. 00:21:46.77\00:21:48.57 They were terrified, thought He was a spirit. 00:21:48.60\00:21:50.41 And He says, "No, look, I'm not--I'm not a ghost. 00:21:50.44\00:21:52.37 I'm a real and a living God." 00:21:52.41\00:21:54.08 He said, "Peace to you." 00:21:54.11\00:21:55.94 He doesn't want us sad, He wants us to have peace. 00:21:55.98\00:21:58.35 "And they were terrified and frightened. 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.35 He said, 'Why are you troubled? 00:22:00.38\00:22:02.32 And why do doubts arise in your heart? 00:22:02.35\00:22:04.22 Behold My hands and feet. 00:22:04.25\00:22:05.92 It is I Myself. 00:22:05.95\00:22:07.36 Handle Me and see, for the spirit doesn't have flesh 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.32 and bone as you see that I have.' 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.86 When He said these things, He showed them His hands and His 00:22:11.89\00:22:14.36 feet, while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled. 00:22:14.40\00:22:18.13 He said to them, 'Do you have any food to eat?' 00:22:18.17\00:22:20.84 They gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. 00:22:20.87\00:22:23.47 He took and ate in their presence." 00:22:23.51\00:22:25.41 Said, "Look, I'm not a ghost. 00:22:25.44\00:22:27.44 I'm still the same Jesus." 00:22:27.48\00:22:29.41 In the resurrection, we get glorified bodies, 00:22:29.44\00:22:31.35 but we're still real. 00:22:31.38\00:22:33.25 God made Adam and Eve with a purpose. 00:22:33.28\00:22:35.08 He put them in a garden to eat, and says we're going to plant 00:22:35.12\00:22:37.55 vineyards and eat the fruit of them in heaven. 00:22:37.59\00:22:39.85 We're going to build houses and inhabit them. 00:22:39.89\00:22:42.69 And it tells us it's very real. 00:22:42.72\00:22:44.76 We're not on clouds floating around as, like, chubby cherubs 00:22:44.79\00:22:47.13 shooting arrows to make people fall in love. 00:22:47.20\00:22:51.23 You know, we're doing real things in the new earth. 00:22:51.27\00:22:54.74 And then when He got done eating, He shared a meal 00:22:54.77\00:22:56.81 with them again. 00:22:56.84\00:22:58.61 He said, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was 00:22:58.64\00:23:02.14 still with you, that all things must be fulfilled that are 00:23:02.18\00:23:05.31 written in the law of Moses," all the way from Moses. 00:23:05.35\00:23:08.78 You know, Moses says in Deuteronomy 18, 00:23:08.82\00:23:11.59 "The Lord your God will raise up a prophet unto you like me. 00:23:11.62\00:23:15.56 Him you shall hear." 00:23:15.59\00:23:17.53 Jesus is that prophet like Moses that was raised up. 00:23:17.56\00:23:19.89 He is the great lawgiver. 00:23:19.93\00:23:21.73 "All things written in the law of Moses and the prophets." 00:23:21.76\00:23:26.17 And you know, you go all the way from Moses to Malachi, 00:23:26.20\00:23:28.24 where it says, "Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet. 00:23:28.27\00:23:31.24 Remember ye the law of Moses, My servant." 00:23:31.27\00:23:33.84 It's all talking about Jesus all along the way. 00:23:33.88\00:23:37.01 Jesus is in every line. 00:23:37.05\00:23:38.78 Jesus is in Genesis, He's in Exodus, He's in Leviticus, 00:23:38.81\00:23:41.38 He's in Numbers, He's in Deuteronomy, in Joshua. 00:23:41.42\00:23:45.22 You know the story of Jericho. 00:23:45.25\00:23:47.46 I shared that in Jerusalem last week. 00:23:47.49\00:23:49.62 Joshua is the way you say Jesus in Hebrew, Yeshua. 00:23:49.66\00:23:53.46 He comes, he blows the trumpets, they shout, the city walls fall, 00:23:53.50\00:23:58.43 and only Rahab and her family are saved. 00:23:58.47\00:24:00.84 That's the story of salvation. 00:24:00.87\00:24:02.60 Jesus says, "I'm coming. 00:24:02.64\00:24:04.51 The Lord will descend from heaven with a shout, 00:24:04.54\00:24:06.51 the trump of God. 00:24:06.54\00:24:08.38 The dead in Christ will rise." 00:24:08.41\00:24:10.15 There's a great earthquake, and only those who are in the house 00:24:10.18\00:24:13.28 of Rahab with that red rope, it's a symbol of salvation, 00:24:13.31\00:24:15.88 are saved. 00:24:15.92\00:24:17.75 All these stories you read about in the Old Testament 00:24:17.79\00:24:19.75 are talking about Christ. 00:24:19.79\00:24:21.86 "All things that are written in the law of Moses and the 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.06 prophets and the psalms." 00:24:24.09\00:24:26.33 What did Jesus say in Psalm 22? 00:24:26.36\00:24:30.27 Hanging on the cross. 00:24:30.30\00:24:32.27 Everyone wonders, why did Jesus say, "My God, My God, 00:24:32.30\00:24:34.67 why have you forsaken Me?" 00:24:34.70\00:24:37.01 He was quoting from a messianic psalm. 00:24:37.04\00:24:39.97 And you read later in that very psalm, what does it say? 00:24:40.01\00:24:42.81 "They pierced My hands and My feet. 00:24:42.84\00:24:45.21 They gambled for My clothing," the very things that were 00:24:45.25\00:24:47.42 happening right there around the cross. 00:24:47.45\00:24:49.48 He's directing their attention. 00:24:49.52\00:24:51.25 He didn't get discouraged. 00:24:51.29\00:24:53.22 He's quoting like the priest from one of the psalms. 00:24:53.25\00:24:56.02 That was supposed to strengthen their faith. 00:24:56.06\00:24:58.13 It could be the reason the thief on the cross realized 00:24:58.16\00:24:59.96 it was Jesus. 00:25:00.06\00:25:01.86 "All things written in the prophets 00:25:01.90\00:25:03.73 and the psalms concerning Me." 00:25:03.77\00:25:05.47 And this is my last verse, "And He opened their understanding, 00:25:05.50\00:25:09.67 that they might comprehend the Scripture." 00:25:09.70\00:25:12.74 Every time Jesus met with them, it says He opened their 00:25:12.77\00:25:15.84 understanding, that they might comprehend the Scripture. 00:25:15.88\00:25:18.68 You know, they went from Jerusalem and they were sad. 00:25:18.71\00:25:21.48 They came back to Jerusalem knowing that Jesus was alive, 00:25:21.52\00:25:24.12 and they were happy. 00:25:24.15\00:25:25.89 We're here on earth. 00:25:25.92\00:25:27.66 Our object is to get to the new Jerusalem. 00:25:27.69\00:25:29.36 We need to know He's real, He's alive. 00:25:29.39\00:25:31.56 How did these disciples know Jesus? 00:25:31.59\00:25:34.20 He was known in the breaking of bread. 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.80 Jesus said, "This is eternal life," John chapter 17, 00:25:36.83\00:25:40.34 "that they might know Thee, the only true God, 00:25:40.37\00:25:43.24 and Jesus Christ Who You have sent." 00:25:43.27\00:25:46.68 announcer: Don't forget to request today's 00:25:49.71\00:25:51.51 life-changing free resource. 00:25:51.55\00:25:53.58 Not only can you
