male announcer: This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.30\00:00:03.70 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.73\00:00:09.70 ¤¤¤ 00:00:09.84\00:00:14.28 Doug Batchelor : Jesus spoke a lot about the Sabbath, but He 00:00:14.31\00:00:16.31 never spoke about whether or not it should be kept. 00:00:16.34\00:00:18.08 He spoke about how it should be kept. 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.52 It was always presumed it would be kept because it's one 00:00:20.55\00:00:23.15 of the Ten Commandments. 00:00:23.18\00:00:24.92 God's not going to change one of the Ten Commandments 00:00:24.95\00:00:26.96 without making that very clear. 00:00:26.99\00:00:32.79 Doug: You know, as I was praying about what to share this week, 00:00:32.83\00:00:36.36 the Lord impressed me to talk about something that is very 00:00:36.40\00:00:40.77 basic and foundational, but I think it's good for us to be 00:00:40.80\00:00:43.74 reminded of these things. 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.34 Now, there's few things that are more important than 00:00:46.37\00:00:49.88 the Ten Commandments. 00:00:49.91\00:00:51.91 You know, there's one Jesus, one Bible, one Holy spirit, 00:00:51.95\00:00:55.12 but unfortunately, there are hundreds of different 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.39 Christian denominations. 00:00:58.42\00:01:01.02 And the different denominations argue about different 00:01:01.06\00:01:03.79 theological points. 00:01:03.83\00:01:06.66 I'm sure there's some that would disagree with us, but a lot 00:01:06.70\00:01:08.70 of them disagree with each other over everything from the mode 00:01:08.73\00:01:13.87 of baptism, whether or not you need to speak in tongues if you 00:01:13.90\00:01:16.71 received the Holy Spirit, whether or not the wine 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.74 during the communion should be fermented or unfermented, 00:01:19.77\00:01:24.25 whether or not you should do it every week or once a year. 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.82 There's just a whole plethora of different doctrines that 00:01:26.85\00:01:29.58 churches debate and argue about. 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.45 And some things are more important than others. 00:01:32.49\00:01:34.39 Even within our church you'll find some difference of opinion 00:01:34.42\00:01:38.59 on who comprises the 144,000, and understanding the seven 00:01:38.63\00:01:43.03 trumpets and Daniel 11. 00:01:43.06\00:01:45.17 And, you know, there are some things that maybe are not 00:01:45.20\00:01:47.94 essentials, but if there is anything that is an essential 00:01:47.97\00:01:51.94 to understand, I would think it would be, oh, what do God's 00:01:51.97\00:01:56.58 commandments say? 00:01:56.61\00:01:58.81 What is sin? 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.95 These things are priorities. 00:02:00.98\00:02:03.05 They're very important issues. 00:02:03.08\00:02:04.85 So with that in mind, is Sunday really sacred? 00:02:04.89\00:02:08.49 And we're going to begin at the beginning, 00:02:08.52\00:02:11.39 Genesis chapter 2. 00:02:11.43\00:02:13.40 God made the world in six days-- no really seven days, because He 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.90 wasn't done creating until after the full week. 00:02:15.93\00:02:20.77 He made one more thing, He made a day. 00:02:20.80\00:02:23.71 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.44 of them. 00:02:26.47\00:02:27.81 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made, 00:02:27.84\00:02:31.55 and He rested the seventh day from all His work which 00:02:31.58\00:02:34.48 He had done. 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.18 And God Blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, made it holy, 00:02:36.22\00:02:40.02 because in it He rested from all His work which God created 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.06 and made." 00:02:43.09\00:02:44.43 He did not make it holy for himself. 00:02:44.46\00:02:45.76 He made it holy for man to remember. 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.66 The Bible says the Sabbath was made for man. 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.53 It doesn't say the Sabbath was made for Jews. 00:02:50.57\00:02:53.07 The word there is "anthropos," it means mankind, humanity. 00:02:53.10\00:02:58.31 And it's first time also you're going to find the word "seven" 00:02:58.34\00:03:02.01 mentioned three times. 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.35 It says seven, seven, seven, it's a number associated 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.65 with God. 00:03:05.68\00:03:06.98 The seventh day, the seventh day, the seventh day. 00:03:07.02\00:03:08.32 Very specific. 00:03:08.35\00:03:09.68 He get to the last book of the Bible, you have another 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.02 number associated with man, who was made on the sixth day, 00:03:11.05\00:03:14.19 and it's six, six, six. 00:03:14.22\00:03:15.82 So you've got this contest between the worship of God 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.53 and the worship of man that goes on through the Bible. 00:03:18.56\00:03:22.00 Now, you go to the Ten Commandments. 00:03:22.03\00:03:23.60 You find them in Exodus chapter 20, verse 8, "Remember 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.07 the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:03:27.10\00:03:28.67 Six days you should labor and do all of your work, 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.61 but the seventh day is the Sabbath 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.04 of the Lord your God. 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.08 In it you shall not do any work, your son or your daughter--" 00:03:36.11\00:03:37.68 so forth. 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.05 But very clearly says do all your work six days, seventh day, 00:03:39.08\00:03:42.85 holy time. 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.32 This is one of the Ten Commandments spoken 00:03:44.35\00:03:47.26 by God's voice. 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.26 They are not ten suggestions. 00:03:49.29\00:03:50.63 They're not 10 recommendations. 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.19 God spoke with His own voice, wrote with His own finger His 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.20 eternal law, moral law, for all His people, for all the world 00:03:55.23\00:04:00.10 for that matter. 00:04:00.14\00:04:01.70 So which day is the seventh day? 00:04:01.74\00:04:04.81 Some people say, "Well, you can't really know just using 00:04:04.84\00:04:07.41 the Bible." 00:04:07.44\00:04:09.48 Well, if we start with the dictionary, 00:04:09.51\00:04:10.85 that's not the Bible. 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.18 Dictionary: seventh day, Saturday, seventh day 00:04:12.21\00:04:15.08 of the week. 00:04:15.12\00:04:16.45 You go to the Bible, tells us that Jesus was crucified 00:04:16.48\00:04:19.49 on the Preparation Day, which we know to be Friday. 00:04:19.52\00:04:23.06 Then it says they went home and they kept the Sabbath 00:04:23.09\00:04:25.43 according to the commandment, the seventh day. 00:04:25.46\00:04:27.60 And then he rose. 00:04:27.60\00:04:28.93 They came to the tomb early Sunday morning, the first day. 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.87 People call it Easter Sunday. 00:04:31.90\00:04:33.44 So you can even look in the Bible. 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.80 It's pretty clear. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.14 What day is the Lord's day? 00:04:36.17\00:04:37.51 Now, many Christians will say, Well, you've got the Sabbath 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.28 day, which is what the Jews kept, and then you've got 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.64 the Lord's day, which is what Christians teach. 00:04:42.68\00:04:45.08 And they get this from Revelation chapter 1, verse 00:04:45.11\00:04:48.38 10, where John says, "I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, 00:04:48.42\00:04:53.05 and I heard a voice behind me like the sound of a trumpet." 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.66 And so this is the beginning of Revelation. 00:04:55.69\00:04:59.09 See that's the Lord's Day. 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.80 But there's not a single verse in the Bible that says that that 00:05:01.83\00:05:05.17 is referring to the Lord's Day. 00:05:05.20\00:05:06.53 In fact, it's the contrary. 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.34 John was imprisoned by Rome on the Isle of Patmos where they 00:05:08.37\00:05:12.07 had mines. 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.41 And the prisoners were required to work in the mines, but John 00:05:13.44\00:05:16.81 refused to work on the Sabbath day, and that is when the Lord 00:05:16.85\00:05:20.25 gave him the vision. 00:05:20.28\00:05:21.72 It doesn't say anything in the text that this is now 00:05:21.75\00:05:24.45 some new different day of worship for the children 00:05:24.49\00:05:28.29 of Israel or for the Christians. 00:05:28.32\00:05:30.46 What does the Bible say is the Lord's Day? 00:05:30.49\00:05:33.13 Isaiah 58:13, "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, 00:05:33.16\00:05:37.13 from doing your pleasure on My holy day." 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.54 What day is the Lord's Day? 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.27 Sabbath day. 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.61 Look at this one, Exodus 6. 00:05:43.64\00:05:44.97 We just read the Ten Commandments, "Six days you 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.84 should labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.11 the Sabbath of the Jews." 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.48 Is that what it says? 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.25 Seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord. 00:05:53.28\00:05:57.49 "And Jesus said, 'The son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.'" 00:05:57.52\00:06:02.19 All things that were made, were made by Christ. 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.29 Will that include when he wrote the Ten Commandments? 00:06:04.33\00:06:07.40 Yes. 00:06:07.46\00:06:08.73 So if the Sabbath is the Lord's Day, why do so many people 00:06:08.76\00:06:12.53 worship on Sunday? 00:06:12.57\00:06:15.30 Jesus said, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, 00:06:15.34\00:06:19.11 that you may keep your tradition." 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.08 Sunday keeping is not based on Scripture, it is based 00:06:21.11\00:06:24.55 on a tradition. 00:06:24.58\00:06:25.91 I'm going to prove it to you from the Bible as we go on here 00:06:25.95\00:06:28.42 and from history. 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.25 Some of you have heard this interesting story from history, 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.19 where I think it was Czar Nicholas, he looked out of his 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.79 palace walls one day and he noticed that this guard had 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.89 always been standing at this obscure place on the wall. 00:06:38.93\00:06:41.76 There's no gate. 00:06:41.80\00:06:43.10 There was no door. 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.47 And one day he was walking in the garden. 00:06:44.50\00:06:45.80 He went up to the garden and he said, "Why exactly are you 00:06:45.83\00:06:48.47 standing here?" 00:06:48.50\00:06:49.84 Well, the guard was very nervous, and he said, "Well, 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.97 I have orders to stand here, your majesty." 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.71 And he said, "Do you know why?" 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.05 He said, "No, we've just always had someone here 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.78 24 hours a day." 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.88 So he went to the captain. 00:07:00.92\00:07:02.25 Now, the Czar was getting very curious, and he said, "Why do we 00:07:02.28\00:07:04.62 always have a soldier standing at that particular remote spot 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.66 in the garden? 00:07:07.69\00:07:09.02 There's nothing there." 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.36 And he said, "Well, it's just been a standing order for years. 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.73 We've always had 24 hours a day a guard 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.56 has to be stationed there. 00:07:14.60\00:07:16.56 It's been mandated. 00:07:16.60\00:07:17.93 It's in the archives." 00:07:17.97\00:07:19.27 So the Czar went to look at the archives to try and find 00:07:19.30\00:07:21.27 out why is there a soldier there in the archives. 00:07:21.30\00:07:23.54 It said 100 years earlier Catherine the great was 00:07:23.57\00:07:28.74 entertaining guests. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.38 One of her guests came, a dignitary from another 00:07:30.41\00:07:32.71 country, and gave her a gift of an exotic rosebush. 00:07:32.75\00:07:36.92 They planted the rosebush, and she said, "I don't want this 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.52 to be trampled. 00:07:39.55\00:07:40.89 Have a guard guard my rosebush." 00:07:40.92\00:07:43.36 Well, the rosebush died five years after they planted it, 00:07:43.39\00:07:47.23 but at that point they were in the habit of guarding that spot. 00:07:47.30\00:07:51.00 And so for 100 years, a guard was standing there 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.94 without questioning why he was standing there. 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.20 It was a tradition. 00:07:56.24\00:07:58.41 And there are still traditions that Christians guard that there 00:07:58.44\00:08:02.01 is no rhyme or reason for except that it's 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.75 a tradition. 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.08 There's no biblical reason for it. 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.15 So some of the other Scriptures that explain this, Ezekiel 22, 00:08:08.18\00:08:12.99 verse 26 and verse 31, "Her priests have violated my law 00:08:13.02\00:08:17.76 and profane My holy things. 00:08:17.79\00:08:20.00 They put no difference between the profane 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.60 and the holy. 00:08:22.63\00:08:23.97 They have hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profane 00:08:24.00\00:08:28.54 among them. 00:08:28.57\00:08:29.90 Therefore I poured out my indignation on them." 00:08:29.94\00:08:33.01 You know, one of the reasons I was convinced of the Sabbath 00:08:33.04\00:08:35.24 truth is because after I first learned these things, I went 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.75 to my pastors. 00:08:37.78\00:08:39.71 I used to go to church on Sunday. 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.28 I was so into Christianity I was going to several 00:08:41.32\00:08:45.29 different churches. 00:08:45.32\00:08:46.99 One church said we'd have a Wednesday night Bible study. 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.76 I'd be there. 00:08:48.79\00:08:50.13 And then I'd go to another denomination, 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.53 I'd be at their service. 00:08:51.56\00:08:53.23 Another one would have a special early morning service, 00:08:53.26\00:08:54.73 I went there. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.10 I was going to four or five different churches, studying 00:08:56.13\00:08:57.43 with all these Christian groups in Southern California. 00:08:57.47\00:08:59.67 I was just hungry. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.07 I couldn't get enough. 00:09:01.10\00:09:02.44 But when I learned the Sabbath truth, I'd ask the different 00:09:02.47\00:09:04.54 pastors and say, "So why do we go to church on Sunday?" 00:09:04.57\00:09:09.21 And if you ask ten different pastors, you would get 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.91 11 different answers. 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.62 One would say, these are just a few examples, "Doug, 00:09:14.65\00:09:18.15 we're no longer under the Ten Commandments. 00:09:18.19\00:09:21.72 We're now under Grace." 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.63 I said, "Well, what does that mean? 00:09:23.66\00:09:24.96 Does that mean that we don't need to keep the Ten 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.43 Commandments?" 00:09:26.46\00:09:27.76 They said, "Well, we're not under the law." 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.10 So what, wait, let me help me understand that. 00:09:29.13\00:09:30.43 "Is it okay now to kill?" "Well, no." 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.20 "Steal?" "No." 00:09:32.23\00:09:33.50 "Lying?" "No." 00:09:33.54\00:09:34.94 "Commit adultery?" "No." 00:09:34.97\00:09:36.50 What they really meant is there's one commandment you're 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.67 not supposed to remember anymore. 00:09:38.71\00:09:43.95 That's the Sabbath. 00:09:43.98\00:09:45.28 I said, "But isn't that the one that says remember?" 00:09:45.31\00:09:46.65 So that didn't make sense. 00:09:46.68\00:09:47.98 And so I talked to another one. 00:09:48.02\00:09:49.32 He said, "Because of the Resurrection, Jesus rose 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.92 on the first day of the week, and so it is the new 00:09:51.95\00:09:54.59 Christian Sabbath." 00:09:54.62\00:09:56.26 I said, "That sounds beautiful." 00:09:56.29\00:09:57.63 Said, "Where is the Scripture that tells us that?" 00:09:57.66\00:09:59.73 "Well, there is no specific Scripture, but we've had 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.66 a longstanding tradition." 00:10:02.70\00:10:04.07 As though there's some value in that. 00:10:04.10\00:10:06.47 And then I had another friend. 00:10:06.50\00:10:07.80 He was the most creative. 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.94 And he said, "Doug, back in the days of Joshua, you 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.24 remember Joshua prayed and the sun stood still. 00:10:12.27\00:10:15.28 Saturday turned into Sunday back then." 00:10:15.31\00:10:20.02 And I said, "Well, that's interesting. 00:10:20.05\00:10:21.82 I said, Except why did they continue to keep it 00:10:21.85\00:10:24.39 on the seventh day for another 1,500 years after that?" 00:10:24.42\00:10:28.72 And he couldn't answer that. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.09 And they were all giving me difference that they didn't 00:10:30.13\00:10:31.79 agree with each other. 00:10:31.83\00:10:33.16 I said something's wrong. 00:10:33.19\00:10:34.50 They are hiding their eyes from a very obvious truth 00:10:34.56\00:10:39.00 because they have counted the cost of what will it mean if 00:10:39.03\00:10:43.34 I take a stand for this Biblical truth? 00:10:43.37\00:10:45.31 I'll lose my congregation. 00:10:45.34\00:10:46.64 I'll be very unpopular. 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.41 I know pastors that have taken a stand, and it cost them. 00:10:48.44\00:10:52.25 I know some pastors took a stand for the truth, and the majority 00:10:52.28\00:10:55.42 of the church followed them in the Sabbath truth. 00:10:55.45\00:10:59.82 Doug Batchelor: Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:10:59.92\00:11:01.29 In just a moment we'll return for the rest 00:11:01.32\00:11:03.29 of today's presentation. 00:11:03.32\00:11:05.23 You know, millions of sincere Christians assemble on the first 00:11:05.26\00:11:08.36 day of the week, but is that actually the true Bible Sabbath? 00:11:08.40\00:11:12.47 Does the Bible record a change in one of the Ten Commandments? 00:11:12.50\00:11:15.90 And if not, doesn't it seem important that we 00:11:15.94\00:11:18.24 should know for sure? 00:11:18.27\00:11:20.01 We have a special free resource we'd like to give you concerning 00:11:20.04\00:11:23.65 this topic, it's called "Is Sunday Really Sacred?" 00:11:23.68\00:11:28.05 This eye-opening book reveals some amazing facts regarding 00:11:28.08\00:11:31.79 what the Bible actually says about the Sabbath truth. 00:11:31.82\00:11:35.72 And what God's word has to say may truly surprise you. 00:11:35.76\00:11:38.79 To get your free copy, call the phone number on your screen 00:11:38.83\00:11:42.00 and ask for offer number 150 or visit the web address. 00:11:42.03\00:11:46.70 And after you read this incredible resource, make sure 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.50 and share it with a friend. 00:11:49.54\00:11:51.37 Well, let's get back to today's presentation and learn some more 00:11:51.41\00:11:54.08 amazing facts from the Word of God. 00:11:54.11\00:11:56.54 Doug: So what we're going do now, if we want to know why 00:11:57.91\00:12:02.55 would any Christian keep Sunday instead of the Sabbath, 00:12:02.58\00:12:06.19 the first day instead of the seventh. 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.99 We're gonna look at every reference to Sunday, except you 00:12:09.02\00:12:12.26 realize the word Sunday does not appear in the New Testament. 00:12:12.29\00:12:15.53 Sometimes you'll hear the word "sundry" if you're reading 00:12:15.56\00:12:17.93 the King James. 00:12:17.97\00:12:19.30 Sundry is not Sunday. 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.34 Sundries means different. 00:12:21.37\00:12:22.97 God in various times and sundry manners spoke to the prophets 00:12:23.00\00:12:26.27 in time past. 00:12:26.31\00:12:27.61 That means different manners. 00:12:27.64\00:12:30.28 So if you look at every reference to the first day 00:12:30.31\00:12:33.68 of the week, which is what we commonly refer to as Sunday, you 00:12:33.72\00:12:38.49 might find if there's a change. 00:12:38.52\00:12:40.32 There's eight references in the New Testament. 00:12:40.36\00:12:42.42 And nobody's going to argue the Old Testament because it's 00:12:42.46\00:12:44.63 very clear it's the seventh day there. 00:12:44.66\00:12:46.53 So we're going to take them one by one. 00:12:46.56\00:12:48.13 Does that sound fair? 00:12:48.16\00:12:49.60 And we'll look at them and see what the Bible says. 00:12:49.63\00:12:52.10 Look at the first four references are simply 00:12:52.13\00:12:54.40 historical. 00:12:54.44\00:12:55.77 They are talking about the time of the Resurrection. 00:12:55.80\00:12:58.51 Matthew 28, verse 1, "In the end of the Sabbath--" 00:12:58.54\00:13:03.45 Harold Camping was the founder of Family Radio. 00:13:03.48\00:13:05.95 Good radio station, I listened to them. 00:13:05.98\00:13:08.02 But he used to answer Bible questions, and he would always-- 00:13:08.05\00:13:11.35 when people asked about the Sabbath, he would go 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.15 to this verse. 00:13:13.19\00:13:14.49 He'd say, "See what it says right there? 00:13:14.52\00:13:15.86 The end of the Sabbath. 00:13:15.89\00:13:17.19 That means the Sabbath is now over. 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.56 You don't need to keep the Sabbath anymore." 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.40 That's not what it's saying. 00:13:20.43\00:13:21.86 It's saying that that week after the crucifixion, 00:13:21.90\00:13:24.60 after the Sabbath was over, it's saying that they came early 00:13:24.63\00:13:28.14 in the morning on the first day of the week. 00:13:28.17\00:13:29.84 He tried to build a whole doctrine. 00:13:29.87\00:13:31.34 I told you there's 11 different answers if you ask 10 different 00:13:31.37\00:13:34.54 pastors, the reason why. 00:13:34.58\00:13:36.78 "As it began towards the first day of the week." 00:13:36.81\00:13:38.41 Now, is that a new command, to keep the first day? 00:13:38.45\00:13:41.72 You find built into that anything that says now we have 00:13:41.75\00:13:44.25 a new Sabbath day? 00:13:44.29\00:13:45.59 It's on the first day. 00:13:45.62\00:13:46.96 No, it's a simple historical record. 00:13:46.99\00:13:48.96 Now did--was it important that Jesus rose on the first day 00:13:48.99\00:13:51.66 of the week? 00:13:51.69\00:13:53.33 Absolutely. 00:13:53.36\00:13:55.66 Does that make it a new Sabbath? 00:13:55.70\00:13:57.93 Was there anything wrong with the seventh day where God 00:13:57.97\00:14:00.27 had to now change it? 00:14:00.30\00:14:02.10 No. 00:14:02.14\00:14:03.77 Was the seventh day Sabbath chosen before or after sin? 00:14:03.81\00:14:08.68 Before sin. 00:14:08.71\00:14:10.01 It's part of God's perfect plan. 00:14:10.05\00:14:11.38 There's nothing wrong with it. 00:14:11.41\00:14:12.88 Did God do important things on Thursday? 00:14:12.91\00:14:16.38 Was the Lord's Supper important? 00:14:16.42\00:14:18.82 That's Thursday. 00:14:18.85\00:14:20.16 Does it make it a new Sabbath? 00:14:20.19\00:14:21.86 How important is the Crucifixion? 00:14:21.89\00:14:25.13 What day of the week was that? 00:14:25.16\00:14:26.86 Friday. 00:14:26.90\00:14:28.20 Is that a new Sabbath? 00:14:28.23\00:14:29.83 Mark 16:9, a very similar reference, "Now when Jesus was 00:14:29.86\00:14:33.34 risen on the first day of the week, He appeared first 00:14:33.37\00:14:35.94 to Mary Magdalene." 00:14:35.97\00:14:37.57 Do you find built into this verse that there's 00:14:37.61\00:14:39.57 a new commandment? 00:14:39.61\00:14:41.98 No, there's nothing there, simply the record 00:14:42.01\00:14:44.31 of what happened. 00:14:44.35\00:14:45.98 John 20, very similar, "The first day of the week comes Mary 00:14:46.01\00:14:49.52 early while it was still dark. 00:14:49.55\00:14:51.59 She came to the tomb." 00:14:51.62\00:14:53.59 And just again a historical record. 00:14:53.62\00:14:56.16 There's no new voice from a mountain, no new finger 00:14:56.19\00:14:59.33 writing new law in stone saying, "Now the first day is to be our 00:14:59.36\00:15:02.83 new Sabbath." 00:15:02.86\00:15:04.17 Nothing of the sort, Mark 16:1 and 2, "Now when the sabbath was 00:15:04.20\00:15:08.07 passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome, 00:15:08.10\00:15:11.41 brought spices, that they might come and anoint Him." 00:15:11.44\00:15:14.88 Now, this to me is actually proof that the seventh day was 00:15:14.91\00:15:18.21 still important. 00:15:18.25\00:15:20.52 If Jesus had taught the apostles that they didn't need to keep 00:15:20.55\00:15:23.55 the Sabbath anymore, or the seventh day wasn't going 00:15:23.59\00:15:26.25 to be important, it was not gonna be meaningful for them, 00:15:26.29\00:15:30.99 why was it so important to the disciples that they would 00:15:31.03\00:15:34.50 not finish embalming His body on Friday when the Sun 00:15:34.56\00:15:39.83 was going down? 00:15:39.87\00:15:41.54 They knew Jesus would not be pleased with that. 00:15:41.57\00:15:42.87 There was a lot of work involved in. 00:15:42.90\00:15:44.24 And then they said let's wait until after the Sabbath 00:15:44.27\00:15:46.51 has passed. 00:15:46.54\00:15:48.18 That's why they waited because the Sabbath was important. 00:15:48.21\00:15:51.18 You know, Jesus even kept the Sabbath in His death. 00:15:51.21\00:15:53.05 He died Friday, rested through the Sabbath, rose 00:15:53.08\00:15:55.78 after it was over. 00:15:55.82\00:15:57.52 And so the idea that it's been done away with 00:15:57.55\00:15:59.89 just doesn't hold water. 00:15:59.92\00:16:01.96 No new commandment here. 00:16:01.99\00:16:03.93 "Very early in the morning on the first day of the week, 00:16:03.96\00:16:05.93 they came to the tomb when the sun had risen." 00:16:05.96\00:16:08.26 Again, it's just telling us what happened there. 00:16:08.30\00:16:11.30 And then the next reference is in Luke. 00:16:11.33\00:16:13.57 Luke 23 verse 56 says, "They returned, and they prepared 00:16:13.60\00:16:17.81 spices and fragrant oils. 00:16:17.84\00:16:19.34 They rested on the sabbath day according to the Commandments." 00:16:19.37\00:16:22.51 So they prepared. 00:16:22.54\00:16:23.85 That was the Preparation Day. 00:16:23.88\00:16:25.55 They got everything ready. 00:16:25.58\00:16:26.88 That's what we would call Friday. 00:16:26.92\00:16:28.25 They kept the Sabbath according-- 00:16:28.28\00:16:30.35 Does he say the Jewish law? 00:16:30.39\00:16:32.05 Luke was a Gentile. 00:16:32.09\00:16:33.39 He says the Sabbath. 00:16:33.42\00:16:34.86 He states it like every Christian will know about this. 00:16:34.89\00:16:36.89 And he's writing this years after the Crucifixion. 00:16:36.93\00:16:39.43 He could've said the old Jewish Sabbath. 00:16:39.46\00:16:41.30 He says according to the commandment, 00:16:41.33\00:16:42.83 not the old commandment. 00:16:42.86\00:16:44.53 It's all stated as though it's still in existence. 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.17 "Now on the first day of the week, very early 00:16:47.20\00:16:49.04 in the morning, they came to the sepulchre," or the tomb. 00:16:49.07\00:16:52.87 Is there anything in here that says, "And God established a new 00:16:52.91\00:16:56.24 Sabbath day?" 00:16:56.28\00:16:57.95 So we're looking at all the references to the first day. 00:16:57.98\00:16:59.95 We're looking for that commandment. 00:17:00.05\00:17:01.88 I know one evangelist was very dramatic. 00:17:01.92\00:17:03.85 When he would preach on this subject, he would bring $1,000 00:17:03.89\00:17:07.72 and he put it up front for everyone to see it. 00:17:07.76\00:17:11.03 He said, "I'm going to give this away to anybody tonight that can 00:17:11.06\00:17:14.60 show me this missing text in the Bible. 00:17:14.63\00:17:17.73 What I want from you is to show me one commandment in the Bible 00:17:17.77\00:17:21.57 to keep the first day as the new Christian Sabbath." 00:17:21.60\00:17:25.71 Of course, everybody's very quiet because it's not there. 00:17:25.74\00:17:28.54 And he always got to take his money home. 00:17:28.58\00:17:31.41 So he was happy doing that. 00:17:31.45\00:17:34.42 Now we'll go to the sixth reference text referring 00:17:34.45\00:17:38.29 to the first day of the week. 00:17:38.32\00:17:39.69 And it talks--is it a new Sabbath day? 00:17:39.72\00:17:41.99 This is talking about the day of the Resurrection. 00:17:42.02\00:17:43.79 It says, "Then that same day at evening--" 00:17:43.83\00:17:46.59 Now, wait, what day is this? 00:17:46.63\00:17:49.16 First day. 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.50 When does a day begin and end in the Bible? 00:17:50.53\00:17:53.80 So when it's talking about the same day that Christ 00:17:53.84\00:17:55.90 rose, first day of the week, evening, it's getting ready 00:17:55.94\00:17:58.47 to turn into Monday. 00:17:58.51\00:18:00.81 See what's happening? 00:18:00.84\00:18:02.78 "When the doors were shut, the disciples were assembled 00:18:02.81\00:18:07.02 to inaugurate a new Sabbath." 00:18:07.05\00:18:09.05 Is that why they're assembled? 00:18:09.08\00:18:10.92 It says, "They were assembled for fear of the Jews." 00:18:10.95\00:18:14.59 The Jews were saying the body was stolen. 00:18:14.62\00:18:16.36 They thought they were going to come looking for them. 00:18:16.39\00:18:18.76 And Jesus came, met with them, and said, "peace to you." 00:18:18.79\00:18:22.53 Now, you also look later, I think it's verse 26 in the same 00:18:22.56\00:18:26.63 chapter, it says, "Eight days later He met with them again." 00:18:26.67\00:18:30.31 This time Thomas is there. 00:18:30.34\00:18:33.04 What is eight days after Sunday? 00:18:33.07\00:18:36.81 Seven days after Sunday would be what? 00:18:36.85\00:18:39.21 Sunday. 00:18:39.25\00:18:40.55 Eight days after Sunday is Monday. 00:18:40.58\00:18:43.42 So He also meets with them on a Monday. 00:18:43.45\00:18:46.42 Is that a new Sabbath? 00:18:46.45\00:18:48.52 So the idea because Jesus did something and met 00:18:48.56\00:18:51.66 with the disciples-- 00:18:51.69\00:18:52.99 He met with them by the sea when they were fishing. 00:18:53.03\00:18:54.63 Obviously, if they were fishing, it wasn't the Sabbath. 00:18:54.66\00:18:57.30 But He met with them then too. 00:18:57.33\00:18:58.63 He met with them over a period of 40 days 00:18:58.67\00:19:00.94 after the Resurrection. 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.30 Does this seventh passage say that Sunday is holy? 00:19:03.34\00:19:07.48 1 Corinthians 16, verse 2. 00:19:07.51\00:19:09.44 We've only got one more after this. 00:19:09.48\00:19:10.98 But this is one some people use. 00:19:11.01\00:19:12.88 They say this is proof that the disciples were now keeping 00:19:12.91\00:19:16.25 Sunday as a new Christian Sabbath. 00:19:16.28\00:19:19.39 Paul says, "On the first day of the week--" and the way it 00:19:19.42\00:19:21.79 actually reads in the original, "On the beginning of the week 00:19:21.82\00:19:26.29 let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as 00:19:26.33\00:19:30.37 he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come." 00:19:30.40\00:19:33.97 Paul is on his way through Asia. 00:19:34.00\00:19:36.00 He's on his way to Jerusalem to take a special offering 00:19:36.04\00:19:39.37 from the churches in Jerusalem. 00:19:39.41\00:19:40.74 He's making haste. 00:19:40.78\00:19:42.08 There's a famine. 00:19:42.11\00:19:43.45 They're hungry. 00:19:43.48\00:19:44.78 And he said, "Look, at the beginning of the week," 00:19:44.81\00:19:47.12 they used to get their accounts in order in the first 00:19:47.15\00:19:49.18 of the week. 00:19:49.22\00:19:50.79 Everybody set something aside when you've done your 00:19:50.82\00:19:52.79 bookkeeping so there is no church offering when I come. 00:19:52.82\00:19:57.53 It's actually saying the very opposite. 00:19:57.56\00:19:59.69 This is not talking about passing the plate 00:19:59.73\00:20:01.70 Sunday morning. 00:20:01.73\00:20:03.40 He's saying, "The beginning of the week, lay something aside 00:20:03.43\00:20:07.27 so that we don't have a collection when I come. 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.34 It's ready to give to me. 00:20:09.37\00:20:10.67 And I'm making haste. 00:20:10.71\00:20:12.04 And I'm on my way." 00:20:12.07\00:20:14.21 Is this the new Sabbath commandment? 00:20:14.24\00:20:17.58 Does he say anything here about, "Now, do not work on that day. 00:20:17.61\00:20:21.45 Make sure that we gather together for worship 00:20:21.48\00:20:23.52 on that day." 00:20:23.55\00:20:25.19 And it's just a practical recommendation that they set 00:20:25.22\00:20:28.66 aside an offering for collection purposes. 00:20:28.69\00:20:32.26 And this is the eighth now in the final reference 00:20:32.29\00:20:35.03 to the first day of the week that you're going to find 00:20:35.06\00:20:36.63 in the Bible. 00:20:36.67\00:20:37.97 And people work real hard to make hay out of this one. 00:20:38.00\00:20:41.67 Is it saying that Sunday is a new holy day? 00:20:41.70\00:20:43.87 Let's look at it together. 00:20:43.91\00:20:45.24 It's Acts 20, verse 7. 00:20:45.27\00:20:46.57 If you've got your Bibles, I recommend you turn there. 00:20:46.61\00:20:48.98 Acts 20, verse 7. 00:20:49.01\00:20:50.65 Luke is telling a remarkable story. 00:20:50.68\00:20:54.35 We'll find out why he's telling the story. 00:20:54.38\00:20:57.12 "Now on the first day of the week--" yes that would be 00:20:57.15\00:20:59.95 Sunday, "when the disciples came together to break bread." 00:21:00.06\00:21:03.46 Ah, ah, you got it? 00:21:03.49\00:21:05.13 They came together to break bread. 00:21:05.16\00:21:06.46 They're having a communion service. 00:21:06.49\00:21:08.83 They're gathering on the first day, and they're having 00:21:08.86\00:21:11.10 a communion service. 00:21:11.13\00:21:12.43 This must be evidence that they now are worshiping 00:21:12.47\00:21:16.20 on the first day. 00:21:16.24\00:21:18.24 It is the new Sabbath. 00:21:18.27\00:21:19.57 I respectfully disagree. 00:21:19.61\00:21:20.94 I don't think that's what they're saying at all. 00:21:20.98\00:21:23.35 It says, "Paul is ready to depart the next day. 00:21:23.38\00:21:26.38 He speaks to them, and he continues his message 00:21:26.41\00:21:29.35 until midnight." 00:21:29.38\00:21:31.69 Now, when does the first day begin? 00:21:31.72\00:21:36.22 Sundown. 00:21:36.26\00:21:37.56 So when it says that they're meeting on the first day 00:21:37.59\00:21:39.73 of the week, and it's an evening meeting, what this is is 00:21:39.76\00:21:42.30 a Saturday night meeting. 00:21:42.33\00:21:45.40 And why is he talking so long? 00:21:45.43\00:21:47.57 Because he's not-- he's beginning a journey 00:21:47.60\00:21:49.67 the next day. 00:21:49.70\00:21:51.37 If Sunday is the new Sabbath, why is he beginning a journey? 00:21:51.41\00:21:54.74 Let's keep reading. 00:21:54.78\00:21:57.01 First of all, the scholar Horatio Hackett said, "The Jews 00:21:57.05\00:21:59.95 reckon the day from evening to morning, that on that 00:22:00.05\00:22:02.98 principle the evening of the first day of the week 00:22:03.02\00:22:05.45 would have been our Saturday night." 00:22:05.49\00:22:07.02 By the way this scholar is not a member of our church. 00:22:07.06\00:22:09.99 He's just being honest. 00:22:10.03\00:22:11.76 "The apostle held his last religious service on Saturday 00:22:11.79\00:22:15.10 evening, and consequently resumed his journey 00:22:15.13\00:22:17.83 on Sunday morning." 00:22:17.87\00:22:19.50 Commentary on the Book of Acts. 00:22:19.53\00:22:21.54 So Acts 20, it says, "A young man named Eutychus was sitting 00:22:21.57\00:22:25.37 in the window, who's sinking into a deep sleep. 00:22:25.41\00:22:28.78 He falls down from the third story, and he's taken up dead 00:22:28.81\00:22:31.85 because Paul was long in preaching," which is a good 00:22:31.88\00:22:33.88 recommendation for pastors not to preach too long because it 00:22:33.92\00:22:36.72 can be lethal when that happens. 00:22:36.75\00:22:42.02 So Paul goes down. 00:22:42.06\00:22:43.89 He embraces the young man. 00:22:43.93\00:22:46.03 He says his life is still in him. 00:22:46.06\00:22:47.73 Eutychus is resurrected. 00:22:47.76\00:22:50.17 Luke is telling this story because he's saying 00:22:50.20\00:22:52.20 a resurrection took place. 00:22:52.23\00:22:53.57 Notice what happened. 00:22:53.60\00:22:54.90 "When they came up after Eutychus is 00:22:54.94\00:22:56.27 resurrected, they broke bread." 00:22:56.30\00:22:57.97 Now they're breaking bread again. 00:22:58.01\00:22:59.54 They "Eaten and talked a long while, even till daybreak." 00:22:59.57\00:23:02.08 They stayed up all night long. 00:23:02.11\00:23:03.58 They eat bread twice and then Paul departed. 00:23:03.61\00:23:07.75 The next day--oh by the way, breaking bread in Acts 20:46, 00:23:07.78\00:23:13.39 you only break bread on--what does breaking bread mean? 00:23:13.42\00:23:18.43 Is it always a communion service? 00:23:18.46\00:23:20.53 "So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, 00:23:20.56\00:23:24.63 and breaking bread daily in the temple." 00:23:24.67\00:23:27.07 Daily breaking bread from house to house. 00:23:27.10\00:23:29.24 Jesus said, "Give us this day our daily bread." 00:23:29.27\00:23:31.44 Breaking bread did not always mean a communion service. 00:23:31.47\00:23:34.31 It meant eating. 00:23:34.34\00:23:35.94 You remember on the road to Emmaus he went in and broke 00:23:35.98\00:23:37.98 bread with them. 00:23:38.01\00:23:39.31 They were eating. 00:23:39.35\00:23:40.65 And that was a Sunday night, which would have been Monday. 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.48 So it's not saying anywhere in these verses that Sunday is 00:23:42.52\00:23:46.62 now a new Sabbath. 00:23:46.65\00:23:47.99 They ate their bread with gladness, simplicity 00:23:48.02\00:23:49.76 of heart. 00:23:49.79\00:23:51.13 The next day Paul said goodbye to them. 00:23:51.16\00:23:52.46 He began a journey, that would have been Sunday. 00:23:52.49\00:23:55.06 Would that be when you begin a long epic journey? 00:23:55.10\00:23:57.80 No. 00:23:57.83\00:23:59.17 Prior day Sabbath he spent with them all day, and that 00:23:59.20\00:24:01.67 evening he preached. 00:24:01.70\00:24:03.47 Eutychus fell out the window. 00:24:03.51\00:24:04.81 He's resurrected. 00:24:04.84\00:24:06.14 That's why Luke is telling the story. 00:24:06.17\00:24:07.61 He's not telling the story to say a new Sabbath was 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.48 inaugurated in Acts chapter 20. 00:24:10.51\00:24:14.48 Wouldn't God have told us if one of the Ten Commandments 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.92 had been changed? 00:24:16.95\00:24:19.02 What do you think? 00:24:19.05\00:24:20.92 How many of you heard that they've changed the law now? 00:24:20.96\00:24:23.63 Highway 65, you can go 80 miles an hour. 00:24:23.66\00:24:27.23 Isn't that exciting? 00:24:27.23\00:24:28.53 Did you hear that? 00:24:28.56\00:24:29.90 How many of you believe me? 00:24:29.93\00:24:31.77 Nobody believes a pastor. 00:24:31.80\00:24:34.87 Why don't you believe me? 00:24:34.90\00:24:36.67 Because you know that if the state is going to change 00:24:36.71\00:24:40.81 a major law that would affect everybody's lives, they are 00:24:40.84\00:24:43.98 responsible to thoroughly announce that and advertise it 00:24:44.01\00:24:48.18 to avoid accidents, right? 00:24:48.22\00:24:49.55 Everyone's going to know about that. 00:24:49.58\00:24:51.99 Now, when God gave the Sabbath, He speaks it with His voice. 00:24:52.02\00:24:54.69 He writes it with His finger in front of an entire nation. 00:24:54.72\00:24:58.29 If He's going to change that, don't you think there'd be 00:24:58.33\00:25:01.76 something in the New Testament? 00:25:01.80\00:25:03.63 There'd be some battle. 00:25:03.67\00:25:06.37 Look at all the argument that the Jews had with the Christians 00:25:06.40\00:25:09.57 over circumcision. 00:25:09.60\00:25:12.04 You find that discussed all through the writings of Paul. 00:25:12.07\00:25:15.71 There was a great debate over that. 00:25:15.74\00:25:17.11 They had a great debate about whether or not you get eat 00:25:17.15\00:25:18.85 food sacrificed to idols or not. 00:25:18.88\00:25:21.02 But you realize there's never a debate about whether or not 00:25:21.05\00:25:23.75 you should keep the Sabbath. 00:25:23.79\00:25:25.09 Jesus spoke a lot about the Sabbath, but He never 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.42 spoke about whether or not it should be kept. 00:25:27.46\00:25:28.96 He spoke about how it should be kept. 00:25:28.99\00:25:34.96 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 00:25:35.56\00:25:37.90 free resource. 00:25:37.93\00:25:39.27 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 00:25:39.30\00:25:41.57 download a digital copy straight to your computer 00:25:41.60\00:25:44.01 or mobile device. 00:25:44.04\00:25:45.71 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, simply 00:25:45.74\00:25:48.38 text the keyword on your screen to 40544 or visit the web 00:25:48.41\00:25:52.88 address shown on your screen and be sure to select 00:25:52.91\00:25:55.92 the digital download option on the request page. 00:25:55.95\00:25:58.49 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's word 00:25:58.52\00:26:01.79 with "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want, and most 00:26:01.82\00:26:05.59 important, to share it with others. 00:26:05.63\00:26:11.23 announcer: What if you could know the future?
