Hi, I'm Clyde Morgan. 00:00:12.28\00:00:14.00 What does it take to enter a closed country with 00:00:14.44\00:00:16.57 the Good News of Jesus Christ? 00:00:16.72\00:00:18.35 And what results might you 00:00:18.79\00:00:20.30 anticipate from such an effort? 00:00:20.41\00:00:21.69 What you are about to see is 00:00:23.00\00:00:24.27 the incredible account of a young couple who 00:00:24.42\00:00:26.74 did just that. 00:00:26.80\00:00:27.77 They entered a closed country 00:00:28.12\00:00:29.96 more than twice the size of Texas - 00:00:30.00\00:00:31.94 this country of Mongolia. 00:00:31.97\00:00:33.49 At first they didn't speak the language 00:00:33.53\00:00:35.56 and they knew no one. 00:00:35.73\00:00:37.05 Here is a story that truly only God could write. 00:00:37.25\00:00:40.74 This expansive country has always been known as 00:00:48.61\00:00:50.92 wild and untamed. 00:00:51.11\00:00:52.72 Early in the 13th Century Ghengis Khan led Mongolians on 00:00:56.71\00:01:00.10 conquests that resulted in the largest empire the world 00:01:00.13\00:01:03.48 has ever known. 00:01:03.51\00:01:04.93 The great khans ruled from Korea to Poland. 00:01:05.88\00:01:09.64 They governed this vast empire until they were conquered by 00:01:10.79\00:01:13.77 the Chinese in the 17th Century. 00:01:13.81\00:01:16.12 Mongolia remained under Chinese control until 1911 00:01:16.53\00:01:20.55 when the last Chinese Dynasty fell. 00:01:20.58\00:01:23.01 At that time, outer Mongolia became independent of China. 00:01:23.13\00:01:27.09 In 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic 00:01:29.45\00:01:33.24 a revolutionary and communist state was formed. 00:01:33.33\00:01:36.40 Tibetan Buddhism has long been Mongolia's principle religion. 00:01:38.48\00:01:42.90 However, in the 20 years following the Soviet Union 00:01:43.33\00:01:46.46 takeover, Communist persecution slashed the ranks of Buddhist 00:01:46.50\00:01:49.82 clergy from 150,000 to only 200. 00:01:49.85\00:01:54.40 Christianity was also prohibited. In fact, 00:01:56.58\00:02:00.46 in 1990, records indicate there were fewer than 10 known 00:02:00.54\00:02:04.62 Christian believers in Mongolia. 00:02:04.65\00:02:07.23 In July of 1990, something dramatic happened. 00:02:09.62\00:02:13.03 Protests and riots led to the first free elections 00:02:13.06\00:02:15.99 in Mongolian history. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.42 With a new government in place, the doors that had been closed 00:02:18.14\00:02:21.36 for so long began to open. 00:02:21.40\00:02:24.12 It's been years since I stepped off the train in Mongolia, 00:02:37.84\00:02:41.00 but I remember it all. 00:02:41.03\00:02:42.79 I was 24 years old when I first met Brad Jolly. 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.57 God, in His perfect timing, had Brad's first quarter at 00:02:53.92\00:02:56.70 Andrews University be my last quarter there. 00:02:56.73\00:02:59.51 He made it very clear that if the relationship was to continue 00:02:59.54\00:03:03.75 I had to be willing to be a frontier missionary. 00:03:04.00\00:03:06.71 Little did I know of the adventure God 00:03:07.23\00:03:08.96 had in store for me. 00:03:08.99\00:03:11.02 We were married in 1989 00:03:14.92\00:03:16.58 and we were still living at Andrews University as 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.92 Brad wasn't finished with the seminary. 00:03:18.95\00:03:21.05 But yet, he was concerned that I wasn't enthusiastic 00:03:21.37\00:03:24.10 about missions. 00:03:24.14\00:03:25.11 Well I tried to explain it's hard to be enthusiastic 00:03:25.68\00:03:27.83 about something that's nebulous. So I tried to corner him. 00:03:27.95\00:03:30.37 "Now, where would you like to go?" 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.16 He'd had a good experience as a student missionary 00:03:33.74\00:03:36.28 for two years in Japan, so he thought, "Well, Asia. " 00:03:36.37\00:03:38.54 And so I said, "Ok, Asia's really big! Where in Asia?" 00:03:39.09\00:03:44.22 So finally he thought, 00:03:44.44\00:03:45.87 "Well, there's a lot of need in China. " 00:03:46.16\00:03:47.94 We got Chinese language tapes and we would listen to those 00:03:48.13\00:03:51.13 at supper time. 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.59 At that time, Albania was a closed country, 00:03:52.91\00:03:56.76 North Korea, and Mongolia. 00:03:57.05\00:03:59.21 And I knew that being a United States citizen 00:03:59.70\00:04:02.72 there was no way we could go to North Korea 00:04:02.85\00:04:05.54 and Albania wasn't part of Asia, 00:04:05.71\00:04:08.14 but Mongolia is really close to China. 00:04:08.17\00:04:11.22 And so I said, "Well why don't we go to Mongolia?" 00:04:11.26\00:04:14.32 And he looks at me with that kind of smirky smile 00:04:14.60\00:04:16.72 on his face, "But we can't go there; it's restricted. " 00:04:16.75\00:04:20.20 I kept talking about Mongolia. 00:04:22.18\00:04:24.87 One day the Holy Spirit convicted me 00:04:25.38\00:04:27.97 that I needed to be quiet. 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.67 The deep impression I got from the Holy Spirit was that 00:04:31.25\00:04:33.90 if I were to continue pushing, Brad would turn and look at me 00:04:33.97\00:04:37.47 and say, "Look at this God-forsaken country 00:04:37.50\00:04:39.35 you have brought me to. " 00:04:39.43\00:04:41.21 And so, I decided I wouldn't 00:04:42.21\00:04:45.40 mention Mongolia again. 00:04:45.43\00:04:46.91 That evening when Brad came home 00:04:48.92\00:04:52.29 he had checked out every book the library had on Mongolia 00:04:52.50\00:04:55.27 and brought it home with him. 00:04:55.31\00:04:57.49 And from that time on, it was 00:04:58.70\00:05:01.48 a project we worked on together. 00:05:02.19\00:05:04.25 Brad and Cathie earnestly began researching Mongolia. 00:05:04.89\00:05:09.14 They decided to team up with Adventist Frontier Missions 00:05:09.28\00:05:12.13 and began seeking a way into this closed country. 00:05:12.32\00:05:15.23 Finally they found a German missionary 00:05:15.65\00:05:17.71 who was willing to get Mongolian visas for them 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.02 if they would teach English with him. 00:05:20.13\00:05:21.93 Brad and Cathie wrote a letter 00:05:22.50\00:05:24.40 and mailed it to their wedding list 00:05:24.43\00:05:25.77 asking for support. 00:05:25.95\00:05:27.34 The day that we put it in the mail box 00:05:30.06\00:05:33.05 that evening he called and said 00:05:33.13\00:05:35.13 the whole thing was cancelled. 00:05:35.17\00:05:37.14 Most people would think, 00:05:38.45\00:05:40.02 "Ok, that means the doors closed we're not supposed to go. " 00:05:40.05\00:05:42.46 But for us, it was a sign that God waited 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.52 till we mailed the letters. 00:05:45.55\00:05:47.25 Because God still had a plan 00:05:47.43\00:05:49.53 and a way for us to go there. 00:05:49.56\00:05:51.20 Months passed. 00:05:53.34\00:05:55.25 Brad and Cathie and the rest of 00:05:55.35\00:05:56.59 the Adventist Frontier Missions staff prayed and continued to 00:05:56.63\00:05:59.74 trust that God had a way 00:05:59.94\00:06:01.50 for them to get into Mongolia. 00:06:01.60\00:06:03.32 While they waited, 00:06:05.06\00:06:06.03 Brad graduated from the Adventist Seminary 00:06:06.04\00:06:08.39 and they were introduced to a man in the 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.07 Mongolian Embassy in Japan. 00:06:10.10\00:06:12.08 Believing he could provide them with visas, 00:06:12.28\00:06:14.87 Brad and Cathie packed their belongings and boarded a plane 00:06:14.96\00:06:18.31 bound for Japan. 00:06:18.34\00:06:19.37 When they arrived in Tokyo, they visited their contact 00:06:20.89\00:06:23.87 at the Mongolian Embassy. 00:06:23.90\00:06:25.45 To their dismay, Brad and Cathie discovered he had no authority 00:06:25.60\00:06:28.95 to issue visas. 00:06:28.98\00:06:30.42 For the next several days, they called and visited the embassy 00:06:30.52\00:06:33.79 trusting that God would open another door. 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.14 A few days later, their embassy contact 00:06:36.77\00:06:39.85 phoned them and told them to meet with a Mongolian professor 00:06:39.88\00:06:42.47 working in Tokyo. 00:06:42.51\00:06:43.99 Perhaps the professor could help them get visas. 00:06:44.22\00:06:46.81 So we went there and knocked on the door. 00:06:47.32\00:06:50.24 And it's only his wife and his grandson there, 00:06:50.27\00:06:52.92 and they don't speak English very well, 00:06:53.43\00:06:56.23 neither did they know Japanese. 00:06:56.59\00:06:58.28 And so we understood he wouldn't be home till 00:06:58.61\00:07:02.14 you know, much later. More like 8 or 9 o'clock. 00:07:02.40\00:07:05.44 So we didn't want to just 00:07:06.58\00:07:08.22 continue being uncomfortable waiting in the house 00:07:08.35\00:07:11.51 so we said we would return. 00:07:11.55\00:07:12.84 Meanwhile we went and found a little coffee shop and 00:07:13.24\00:07:15.87 ordered some hot chocolate. 00:07:16.08\00:07:17.48 And when the time came and we returned and 00:07:17.51\00:07:21.57 very friendly professor. 00:07:21.69\00:07:23.75 He called the university and made arrangements and 00:07:24.14\00:07:27.28 we would have a visa and 00:07:27.58\00:07:28.70 if nothing happened within a few days, give him a call back 00:07:29.16\00:07:31.55 and he would call again. 00:07:31.68\00:07:33.29 God got us a visa. 00:07:34.49\00:07:36.27 It's quite a long train ride from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar. 00:07:38.92\00:07:42.22 As soon as it was light and we knew we were in Mongolia, 00:07:43.71\00:07:49.31 we had our noses pressed to the window 00:07:49.62\00:07:50.76 trying to see what our new home was going to look like. 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.84 It's pretty barren and desolate. 00:07:54.10\00:07:56.17 The people didn't smile when we would stop at little 00:07:56.66\00:08:01.89 villages along the way. 00:08:01.92\00:08:03.50 And they talked in a language 00:08:04.60\00:08:07.73 we could not understand at all. 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.59 God worked it all out. 00:08:10.33\00:08:11.68 There were no Seventh Day Adventists here to meet us, 00:08:11.71\00:08:13.63 to show us around, or anything. 00:08:13.77\00:08:15.52 So God arranged for the professor's son to do that. 00:08:16.13\00:08:19.75 The first place we lived in was the foreign student dormitory. 00:08:20.02\00:08:23.65 I think it was 4 stories, and we were on the top floor, 00:08:23.92\00:08:27.51 last room, and because we were two paying students, we got 00:08:27.55\00:08:30.94 two rooms which were connected with an entry way that had 00:08:30.97\00:08:34.33 a toilet off the side. 00:08:34.44\00:08:35.82 It was very bleak looking. 00:08:36.34\00:08:39.17 There was a communal kitchen. 00:08:39.42\00:08:42.64 And a communal shower. 00:08:43.24\00:08:44.93 At that time, there was not only shortages of food, 00:08:45.69\00:08:49.38 but the electricity and the water was very unstable. 00:08:49.46\00:08:54.28 It was so cold in our apartment 00:08:54.85\00:08:57.97 the window was lined with ice. 00:08:58.22\00:09:00.04 Probably at least an inch thick. 00:09:00.29\00:09:02.38 We were Mongolian language students at their university. 00:09:03.46\00:09:06.47 And the very first class, the teacher writes on the board 00:09:06.90\00:09:10.54 the whole alphabet and tells us the sound of them 00:09:11.20\00:09:14.68 It's all in printing. She erases the board, and from then on 00:09:15.23\00:09:18.86 she's writing in cursive. 00:09:18.95\00:09:20.35 And see, we're painstakingly trying to copy these letters 00:09:21.15\00:09:24.57 and we get back to our room and we're trying to 00:09:25.26\00:09:26.54 figure out now in cursive, 00:09:26.57\00:09:28.43 what letter is this in print? 00:09:28.81\00:09:30.38 And I can look back at our old notebooks and 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.82 underneath all the cursive is our painstaking trying to print 00:09:32.89\00:09:36.27 these letters underneath so we could then 00:09:36.31\00:09:37.91 try to say them. 00:09:37.94\00:09:39.64 Shopping was very difficult at that time. 00:09:40.53\00:09:43.81 There was potatoes when they came 00:09:44.23\00:09:46.25 There were little tiny green tomatoes 00:09:46.74\00:09:49.72 for a little bit, 00:09:49.76\00:09:52.17 cabbage, onions, turnips. 00:09:52.82\00:09:57.33 Everyone had a ration card at that time and 00:09:58.91\00:10:01.63 there were certain items that were on there 00:10:01.67\00:10:07.12 alcohol, flour, rice, and a lot of other items 00:10:07.15\00:10:12.57 that we never saw. 00:10:12.82\00:10:14.04 But you could only go and get your rations at 00:10:15.22\00:10:19.90 a certain assigned store. 00:10:20.34\00:10:21.51 And if you didn't get there 00:10:22.66\00:10:23.63 when they had your rations for the month, then 00:10:23.64\00:10:26.00 you just kind of went without. 00:10:26.04\00:10:27.54 But even the rations supply was not enough to carry a family 00:10:27.57\00:10:31.07 through a whole month. 00:10:31.10\00:10:32.83 We were blessed that our salary was $40 a month 00:10:33.11\00:10:36.88 and we could go to the dollar store 00:10:36.92\00:10:38.62 and buy, you know, white flour, white rice, oil, you know, 00:10:39.15\00:10:43.59 some of the basic staples. 00:10:43.69\00:10:45.94 And we had brought some beans with us. 00:10:46.05\00:10:47.68 We had a supply of that... so beans and potatoes. 00:10:47.79\00:10:51.68 Through that whole time we never went hungry. 00:10:53.43\00:10:55.48 God provided for us every day. 00:10:56.38\00:10:59.68 Living in the foreign student dormitory, we had a guard 00:11:01.77\00:11:04.84 at the door before you could go up to any of the rooms and 00:11:05.41\00:11:09.23 Mongolians were not allowed in. 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.20 There was one Mongolian couple that lived just beyond his 00:11:11.51\00:11:14.65 little desk, and I don't know all the details as why they were 00:11:14.68\00:11:19.41 there, but because they were past his desk, they could get to 00:11:19.45\00:11:22.12 know the rest of the foreigners. 00:11:22.16\00:11:23.99 We became friends with them and they became our tutors 00:11:24.17\00:11:28.78 and they even had a dictionary. 00:11:28.81\00:11:31.07 His name was Biasihen and her name was Ghierle. 00:11:31.92\00:11:35.36 They were a really neat couple. 00:11:36.37\00:11:39.43 Eventually the guy in charge of the dormitory decided 00:11:39.67\00:11:43.19 they needed to be kicked out. Well, we had two rooms 00:11:43.23\00:11:46.72 and we were only living in one of them. 00:11:46.89\00:11:48.62 So we said, "Well you come on up and you can tutor us more 00:11:49.03\00:11:52.55 and live in our extra room. " 00:11:52.58\00:11:54.44 And so that's what we did. 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.70 And it was a lot of fun because they had friends 00:11:58.03\00:12:03.31 and relatives they could introduce us to. 00:12:03.35\00:12:05.96 He was very curious about the black book we would read out of. 00:12:07.08\00:12:11.49 So we would we would share a little bit and Christmas came 00:12:11.82\00:12:14.02 and we put up a few decorations so when they asked questions, 00:12:14.29\00:12:18.47 we could explain about Jesus' birth. 00:12:18.50\00:12:20.88 We were unprepared to be able to share much spiritually and 00:12:25.85\00:12:29.95 really close to the university was a Mongolian Christian church 00:12:30.07\00:12:33.82 The Christians at this time were all trying to make it 00:12:34.71\00:12:38.14 a large interdenominational type thing, all the missionaries 00:12:38.36\00:12:42.48 working together. 00:12:42.51\00:12:44.09 So we went there, we found there was a New Testament that was 00:12:44.22\00:12:48.95 translated and we thought, "Great! 00:12:48.98\00:12:50.45 We have another tool to help us learn the language. " 00:12:50.78\00:12:53.55 And so we're trying to look at this New Testament and 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.33 our English Bible and they don't match. 00:12:57.64\00:13:01.51 It was very loosely translated and in such a way 00:13:03.93\00:13:09.74 as we found as time went on, we could not teach any of our 00:13:09.77\00:13:13.32 beliefs from this New Testament. 00:13:13.35\00:13:16.02 Meanwhile we were frustrated living in the student dormitory 00:13:16.63\00:13:19.91 because there was no way to invite people to 00:13:19.99\00:13:22.34 come to our home. 00:13:22.38\00:13:23.35 So we looked for another place. There was a Hope Center 00:13:23.73\00:13:28.78 and it was a home where they took runaway children and 00:13:28.81\00:13:31.59 street children and fed them and clothed them and also had a 00:13:31.62\00:13:35.77 little school for them. 00:13:35.80\00:13:37.10 We found another kind of two rooms with the same kind 00:13:38.12\00:13:42.39 of setup as the first place. 00:13:42.43\00:13:44.06 One room for us, one for the couple that was living with us. 00:13:44.09\00:13:47.98 Then there was this little tiny room that 00:13:48.01\00:13:52.52 seemed smaller than a love seat. 00:13:52.86\00:13:54.65 That was our little kitchen. 00:13:55.11\00:13:57.80 There was no stove, so we got a little plug-in burner. 00:13:58.87\00:14:02.72 We would squat and cook there. 00:14:02.75\00:14:05.23 The couple, especially Biasihen, was sharing with 00:14:11.02\00:14:16.34 his classmates other college friends about the Lord. 00:14:16.37\00:14:21.66 So soon there was a group who could teach them how to have 00:14:21.70\00:14:24.96 a relationship with Jesus. 00:14:25.00\00:14:26.48 So they started coming over and meeting in our room 00:14:26.51\00:14:30.20 till soon, it was very full. 00:14:30.24\00:14:33.13 By May, the group was desperate to learn more. 00:14:34.25\00:14:39.34 It was soon going to be summer vacation, they were going to 00:14:39.38\00:14:41.73 be going home and they wanted to learn all they could so 00:14:41.76\00:14:44.01 they could share with their family and friends 00:14:44.05\00:14:45.94 out in the countryside. 00:14:45.98\00:14:47.28 So it wasn't just once or twice a week. 00:14:47.32\00:14:50.39 It was now starting to be almost every day. 00:14:50.53\00:14:52.82 At this time, we still didn't have the language skills 00:15:01.16\00:15:03.25 to be able to teach. 00:15:03.28\00:15:04.55 Brad was teaching Steps to Christ in a very 00:15:05.06\00:15:09.28 easy way and Biasihen was translating. 00:15:09.31\00:15:13.50 Many of the other Christians started being jealous 00:15:13.54\00:15:17.98 and wanting to pull him to be a part of their group. 00:15:18.02\00:15:22.00 So they started telling him that Seventh Day Adventists weren't 00:15:22.03\00:15:25.10 real Christians and pointing out different 00:15:25.13\00:15:30.00 problem verses, and we weren't following the Bible and 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.27 all kinds of problems. 00:15:33.30\00:15:35.14 Well, he hasn't even read the Bible most likely, and he wasn't 00:15:35.17\00:15:39.27 in a situation where he could respond or even know how to 00:15:39.30\00:15:42.48 study to find out for himself. 00:15:42.52\00:15:44.32 But being a verbal person, anything, doubts or 00:15:44.55\00:15:48.79 these questions he would get from the other Christians, 00:15:48.83\00:15:51.98 he would blab that right out to the group 00:15:52.01\00:15:54.72 until soon there was just confusion in the group. 00:15:54.76\00:15:59.18 And at this time we were also expecting our first child. 00:15:59.21\00:16:03.40 And we were excited about this. 00:16:03.43\00:16:05.50 And we also had our first visit from Milton and Helen Lee. 00:16:05.54\00:16:11.53 They had been long time missionaries in China. 00:16:11.56\00:16:14.72 And it was just wonderful to have some Seventh Day Adventist 00:16:14.75\00:16:18.68 experienced missionaries. I think we talked their ears off. 00:16:18.91\00:16:22.64 The day they left was Friday 00:16:24.15\00:16:28.49 and we again had a group in our home. 00:16:28.52\00:16:31.90 And I began to miscarry. 00:16:31.93\00:16:35.34 The group's in our room. They're sitting all over the bed 00:16:35.77\00:16:40.52 wall to wall, just filling this room and 00:16:40.55\00:16:44.52 I had no place to go. So I was in the bathroom. 00:16:44.56\00:16:48.04 Finally, they got the meeting over and got them out so 00:16:50.15\00:16:54.36 I had a bed. 00:16:54.60\00:16:56.24 On top of the stress with these other Christians and Biasihen 00:16:57.65\00:17:01.66 and this group and to lose - to lose our first child 00:17:01.69\00:17:05.47 was just devastating. 00:17:05.50\00:17:09.31 That was June of 1992. 00:17:09.35\00:17:13.13 We were burned out. We were broken. We were sick. 00:17:13.17\00:17:18.28 Discouraged. We hadn't even been in Mongolia a whole year. 00:17:18.32\00:17:22.09 We lost that whole first group. 00:17:22.13\00:17:25.03 Eventually God did send two, I think, 00:17:25.07\00:17:29.30 that had been a part of that group up to meet us. 00:17:29.33\00:17:33.15 It was about a couple weeks after I got out of the hospital 00:17:34.40\00:17:37.35 Brad said we were going on a hike. 00:17:37.48\00:17:40.09 I don't feel up to a hike. 00:17:40.12\00:17:41.97 We take a bus down, I think it's by the agriculture school 00:17:43.29\00:17:47.78 and there's a steep hill that goes up and they put some 00:17:47.82\00:17:51.75 Mongolian vining on that hill. 00:17:51.86\00:17:53.34 So we climbed up that and then we went straight along the ridge 00:17:53.37\00:17:56.66 and we kept walking and walking 00:17:56.70\00:17:58.89 till soon we were in the trees 00:17:58.92\00:18:01.00 and we hadn't realized we would miss the sound of the wind 00:18:01.03\00:18:04.29 in the trees. 00:18:04.32\00:18:05.51 And we kept walking around the ridge and it turned 00:18:05.55\00:18:08.88 and there's this big rock and we sat on that big rock and 00:18:08.91\00:18:14.50 there you can see a panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar. 00:18:14.54\00:18:20.21 You can see the apartments that three different places 00:18:20.24\00:18:23.64 we'd lived up to that point. 00:18:23.68\00:18:25.06 Up above us, we could see the hawks soaring. 00:18:25.10\00:18:28.87 And suddenly we could see our apartment's only that big 00:18:30.50\00:18:34.68 It was a most healing experience for us to just step back 00:18:35.91\00:18:40.37 and get the whole perspective. 00:18:40.41\00:18:42.44 You know, our world is only so big 00:18:42.48\00:18:45.18 compared to the whole universe. 00:18:45.22\00:18:47.19 Yet God is in control of it all. 00:18:47.22\00:18:50.71 He's in control of what's going on, this big mess that we're in. 00:18:50.74\00:18:53.91 And He's going to work things out. We just need to 00:18:56.54\00:18:59.91 stay surrendered and keep walking with him. 00:18:59.95\00:19:02.03 And it was such a wonderful experience to be up there 00:19:02.06\00:19:07.14 and to realize we're just a little part of all of God's plan 00:19:07.18\00:19:10.90 When we got back down, we realized 00:19:14.31\00:19:16.35 several things that changed our ministry. 00:19:18.12\00:19:20.69 For one, we needed to not use an interpreter. 00:19:20.73\00:19:23.71 Brad needed to start teaching when he was able to communicate 00:19:23.75\00:19:27.77 properly in the language. 00:19:27.81\00:19:29.94 Also, the New Testament was not suitable and we could not use it 00:19:29.97\00:19:34.96 and we needed to start working on a Bible translation. 00:19:34.99\00:19:39.03 And so it totally changed our ideal of how the ministry 00:19:39.59\00:19:43.03 and how the mission should be. 00:19:43.06\00:19:44.56 Brad began writing baptismal studies at that time. 00:19:46.79\00:19:50.57 By that fall, my brother-in-law 00:19:51.68\00:19:54.21 was making a trip to China. 00:19:55.67\00:19:58.18 He brought in with him a computer for us and a printer 00:19:58.22\00:20:03.56 the whole Old Testament from 00:20:03.60\00:20:06.62 what they had used in Inner Mongolia. 00:20:06.66\00:20:10.47 So he brought that to us and we started transliterating it 00:20:10.50\00:20:14.60 from the old vertical script to the current Cyrillic. 00:20:14.64\00:20:19.35 At this time, I had been asked to teach Kindergarten at the 00:20:20.68\00:20:24.15 international school. They were just beginning. 00:20:24.19\00:20:27.19 And so I had agreed until they could find another teacher. 00:20:27.22\00:20:31.28 One Mongolian student came 00:20:31.31\00:20:34.64 and was trying to talk with me 00:20:34.68\00:20:37.93 and I found out she was studying French. 00:20:37.97\00:20:40.87 I said, "Oh, you've got to come meet Joanne! She took French 00:20:41.26\00:20:45.57 and she can help you. " 00:20:45.60\00:20:46.72 And so Ihe decide she would come and she did come to our home 00:20:46.76\00:20:52.17 on Sabbath. 00:20:52.20\00:20:53.81 And God arranged it so that no other Mongolian showed up that 00:20:53.84\00:20:56.86 Sabbath. It was just the beginning of our second group. 00:20:56.89\00:20:59.03 And we had the picture rolls hanging up on the walls 00:20:59.07\00:21:03.36 in the living room. 00:21:03.39\00:21:04.66 She started looking at those and we started telling her some 00:21:04.96\00:21:07.59 of the Bible stories. 00:21:07.62\00:21:08.99 Dabahu had been a teacher at the Hope Center for the runaway 00:21:10.58\00:21:15.82 children and she was a part of the first group that fell apart. 00:21:15.85\00:21:20.22 Eventually she made her way back up to where we moved 00:21:20.26\00:21:23.14 and visited us and we were able to continue 00:21:23.18\00:21:24.85 our friendship with her. 00:21:24.88\00:21:26.40 When we got the Old Testament, which was all in that old script 00:21:26.44\00:21:29.70 we were able to give it to her and she would write it in the 00:21:29.73\00:21:33.80 current Cyrillic script. 00:21:33.83\00:21:36.81 So she's probably one Mongolian who's written about, by hand 00:21:36.84\00:21:40.75 written out almost the whole Bible. 00:21:40.79\00:21:42.51 We remembered that stack of books Brad brought home 00:21:45.51\00:21:48.90 from the library. 00:21:48.94\00:21:49.91 Well, in there was a story of a missionary before the turn of 00:21:49.93\00:21:53.42 the century and he had spent 30 years in Mongolia 00:21:53.46\00:21:55.57 without a single convert. 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.51 That's the stronghold the Tibetan Buddhism had 00:21:57.55\00:22:00.80 on the people. 00:22:00.83\00:22:01.89 So that was what we were expecting when we came. 00:22:01.92\00:22:04.22 And exactly two years to the date of when we set foot off 00:22:04.26\00:22:08.65 that train was the first baptism 00:22:08.68\00:22:11.84 The next three years, Satan really attacked 00:22:15.96\00:22:18.20 after that first baptism. 00:22:18.23\00:22:19.86 There were some really hard times. 00:22:20.43\00:22:23.50 But there were some highlights. 00:22:23.54\00:22:26.58 Our two children were born. Eventually we also found 00:22:26.61\00:22:32.04 an office to rent, and so the office was able to move out. 00:22:32.07\00:22:35.60 That also made a change in our home, which had been the church 00:22:35.63\00:22:39.44 and the office and the library and everything else. 00:22:39.48\00:22:42.63 Grand Central Station. 00:22:42.66\00:22:43.93 And from that point on, home was able to be a home 00:22:43.97\00:22:47.85 and a retreat. 00:22:47.89\00:22:50.81 In 1994 when we were home on furlough, when Rene was born, 00:22:50.85\00:22:55.38 Brad had had medical checkups because he hadn't felt well. 00:22:55.42\00:22:59.91 Basically, he was told it was in his head. 00:22:59.95\00:23:02.63 So we head back over. The first signs of things not quite being 00:23:02.66\00:23:08.07 right was kind of like a flu bug, a stomach kind of flu that 00:23:08.34\00:23:12.02 he had in May of 1996. 00:23:12.29\00:23:16.14 Probably just before Christmas, he wasn't able to eat 00:23:18.35\00:23:22.76 anything. We had just seen the American doctor who said, 00:23:22.99\00:23:27.51 "There's different kinds of ulcers. I suggest you go back 00:23:27.54\00:23:29.95 to the States and they can check you out and have some 00:23:29.98\00:23:34.01 recuperation time, for about 6 weeks or whatever. " 00:23:34.05\00:23:37.30 So he knew he needed to go back but he wanted to get 00:23:37.33\00:23:41.48 some publishing jobs done that were just so close to being done 00:23:41.51\00:23:45.36 And so he kept waiting and waiting 00:23:45.40\00:23:48.37 thinking if he could get well enough, he could get down to the 00:23:48.40\00:23:51.42 office and finish the job. 00:23:51.46\00:23:52.64 It didn't happen. 00:23:52.67\00:23:54.36 They finally put him on a plane. I think it was January 17 00:23:54.39\00:23:59.98 and sent him home. 00:24:00.02\00:24:03.68 I saw him off at the airport. He couldn't handle the two kids 00:24:03.72\00:24:07.29 and I going with him because he couldn't help take care of the 00:24:07.32\00:24:10.86 kids. So it was just easier for him to go alone. 00:24:10.99\00:24:13.96 Then when I heard he was in the hospital 00:24:14.36\00:24:16.45 that was really hard for me. 00:24:16.48\00:24:18.20 Meanwhile, the missionary nurse 00:24:18.23\00:24:21.13 was reasoning with me. She said, 00:24:21.17\00:24:25.19 "Your husband is sick. If they do surgery, it's going to be 00:24:27.32\00:24:32.97 weeks before he's up and around and be ready to come back. 00:24:33.01\00:24:37.11 Do you really want to be separated that amount of time?" 00:24:37.14\00:24:39.94 "No. " So she strongly encouraged us to head home. 00:24:39.97\00:24:45.29 So when Sabbath was over, we packed up all our things 00:24:45.32\00:24:50.22 that we didn't want to leave out for others to use and put them 00:24:50.26\00:24:53.46 behind a door, behind a lock, 00:24:53.50\00:24:55.13 and we got on the first flight out of there. 00:24:55.16\00:24:58.07 On that flight home, the doctors walked into Brad's room 00:24:58.10\00:25:03.84 and said, "You have cancer. 00:25:03.87\00:25:05.64 We're doing surgery tomorrow. " 00:25:05.68\00:25:07.50 And I got to arrive just the night before, and to see him 00:25:07.53\00:25:12.18 before he went into surgery. And God worked it all out. 00:25:12.22\00:25:16.36 It wasn't too long after we were back, that he got another 00:25:16.40\00:25:20.88 computer and started doing the publishing. 00:25:21.02\00:25:23.60 He though, "Well maybe God just wanted me to do publishing here 00:25:23.63\00:25:26.67 in the States while I don't have all the distractions of 00:25:26.71\00:25:29.11 things over there, I can really focus. 00:25:29.15\00:25:31.15 Then when the cancer got too painful, to where he had to be 00:25:31.19\00:25:34.69 on stronger pain medication 00:25:34.72\00:25:37.11 and it would effect his thinking, he backed off. 00:25:37.15\00:25:41.19 And he did more training me of how to do some of the programs. 00:25:41.22\00:25:46.22 Hey, come over here. 00:25:47.16\00:25:48.26 These are for you girls, from Daddy. 00:25:49.26\00:25:52.35 You know what? You won't be able to use them for a while, 00:25:54.54\00:25:59.04 but these are so you can remember 00:26:00.41\00:26:05.69 what I desire for you. 00:26:05.72\00:26:08.38 And what is this gift? 00:26:08.42\00:26:11.05 Bible! 00:26:11.08\00:26:13.88 He was so sweet, all the way up to his death. 00:26:13.91\00:26:16.57 And so loving. 00:26:18.35\00:26:19.77 Just minutes before he died, he asked me, "What's the matter?" 00:26:21.40\00:26:24.43 I was upset about something. 00:26:24.46\00:26:26.00 "I love you. " 00:26:26.03\00:26:27.85 He died September 1, 1998. 00:26:29.00\00:26:32.64 In 1998, Adventist Frontier Missions handed the 00:26:35.26\00:26:39.04 Mongolia Church Planting Project over to the General Conference 00:26:39.08\00:26:42.30 of Seventh Day Adventists. 00:26:42.34\00:26:44.01 Pastor Dale Tunnell and his family moved to Mongolia 00:26:44.04\00:26:46.78 to continue the work that Brad and Cathie had started. 00:26:46.82\00:26:49.53 In 1998, we had one church in Ulaanbaatar. 00:26:49.57\00:26:55.09 Today we have four groups meeting in Ulaanbaatar. 00:26:55.13\00:26:58.12 And we have 18 groups meeting all over the country of Mongolia 00:26:58.15\00:27:02.01 Brad and Cathie really laid the foundation for us in three 00:27:02.04\00:27:04.73 different areas. First, they laid a foundation in the area of 00:27:04.77\00:27:07.57 leadership. The people that they chose to be leaders, 00:27:07.61\00:27:10.55 we are still using today. 00:27:10.58\00:27:12.24 Secondly, they laid a foundation in the area of publishing. 00:27:12.27\00:27:14.85 Thirdly, we are continuing to use the home group method 00:27:14.89\00:27:18.41 that they taught us. 00:27:18.45\00:27:19.42 I think we're called to live for Christ and to die for Christ. 00:27:19.43\00:27:24.83 And as we go back and study missions, 00:27:24.87\00:27:30.43 a lot of them went out, and they weren't out very long. 00:27:30.47\00:27:35.16 Their lives were very short and they gave all they had 00:27:35.20\00:27:38.01 for Christ. 00:27:38.05\00:27:39.17 There's nothing wrong with that. Praise the Lord. 00:27:39.20\00:27:43.22 That's what we're here for, to live for Him, 00:27:43.26\00:27:46.30 and if it includes an early death, the next thing you know 00:27:46.33\00:27:50.19 is going to be Jesus coming. 00:27:50.22\00:27:51.96 Brad and Cathie's experience here in Mongolia, 00:27:53.54\00:27:56.09 working on the front lines is a familiar one 00:27:56.13\00:27:58.34 to Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:27:58.38\00:28:00.00 We've been working among the unreached since 1985. 00:28:00.03\00:28:04.18 Every day our missionaries are at work where there is 00:28:04.22\00:28:07.32 no Adventist presence. 00:28:07.35\00:28:08.70 Our great desire is to see God raise up more missionaries 00:28:08.74\00:28:12.40 for the remaining unreached. 00:28:12.43\00:28:14.15
