Hi, I'm Jay Wintermeyer with Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:00:43.07\00:00:45.97 You know, we live in a world where we can communicate 00:00:46.00\00:00:49.05 with people anywhere instantly. Science and medicine have 00:00:49.09\00:00:51.72 advanced to the point where even the birth of a child 00:00:51.75\00:00:54.34 is being broken down into mollecular action. 00:00:54.38\00:00:56.72 What people once considered miraculous, many take for 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.99 granted. If scientists can explain it, people say God 00:01:00.03\00:01:03.23 isn't even involved. 00:01:03.27\00:01:04.56 I invite you to spend the next few minutes with me on a 00:01:04.59\00:01:06.96 journey to the Philippines. 00:01:06.99\00:01:08.34 On the Philippine island of Mindoro, lives a people known 00:01:18.98\00:01:22.21 as the Alangan. 00:01:22.24\00:01:23.44 This mountain tribe has worshipped evil spirits 00:01:24.49\00:01:26.84 for centuries. 00:01:26.87\00:01:27.84 In 1994, Adventist Frontier Missions began a project 00:01:30.52\00:01:34.18 reaching the Alangan with the gospel, training them to 00:01:34.21\00:01:37.12 share Jesus Christ with their own people. 00:01:37.16\00:01:39.30 Come with me to Mindoro and see for yourself if God 00:01:39.50\00:01:42.04 still works through miracles. 00:01:42.07\00:01:43.58 The Alangan village of Pandurukan is situated in a 00:02:00.89\00:02:04.51 small mountain valley on the edge of Makatikong river. 00:02:04.55\00:02:08.25 Each morning, cooking fires send up a blanket of smoke 00:02:08.28\00:02:11.91 that covers the primitive huts with a pale translucent haze. 00:02:11.95\00:02:15.68 My name is Bistacio and I live in Pandurukan. 00:02:20.38\00:02:25.30 One morning I woke up and began to build a cooking fire 00:02:25.34\00:02:29.40 for breakfast when I noticed that my house was 00:02:29.44\00:02:32.57 shaking. Our homes are built on platforms about the ground 00:02:32.60\00:02:37.15 and termites often eat the main supports, so we frequently 00:02:37.18\00:02:41.70 have to rebuild. 00:02:41.73\00:02:43.75 I decided that I would climb further up into the mountains 00:02:43.79\00:02:47.42 to find some good wood to replace the weakened 00:02:47.45\00:02:49.97 timbers. After breakfast, I made my way up the river valley 00:02:50.00\00:02:55.00 searching for the right-sized hardwoood trees. 00:02:55.04\00:02:58.95 I climbed higher and higher. 00:02:58.98\00:03:00.97 Earlier that same morning, something else awoke and began 00:03:01.76\00:03:05.53 to search for food. Slowly it slid out from behind a large 00:03:05.57\00:03:09.31 rock. The inky black scales rippled along the thick 00:03:09.34\00:03:13.42 eight-foot-long body. It was a Dupong viper. 00:03:13.45\00:03:16.85 This viper's venom is extremely poisonous. 00:03:16.88\00:03:20.21 Noiselessly, it glided along the ground searching 00:03:20.24\00:03:24.48 for food. 00:03:24.51\00:03:25.84 About the middle of the day, the stream bed I was hiking in 00:03:26.97\00:03:30.44 narrowed almost to a point. 00:03:30.48\00:03:33.25 As I made my way toward the 00:03:33.29\00:03:36.00 end, I noticed a stand of trees further up the mountain. 00:03:36.03\00:03:40.11 They looked just the right size. 00:03:40.15\00:03:43.24 The viper began to its way down the mountain searching 00:03:45.42\00:03:49.94 among the rocks and gravel for food. 00:03:49.98\00:03:53.02 Suddenly, the snake detected movement. 00:03:53.06\00:03:56.49 It crawled behind a large rock and waited. 00:03:56.52\00:03:59.92 I came to the end of the canyon and started to 00:04:00.86\00:04:03.47 climb the rock wall. 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.31 I climbed up to a ledge almost 50 feet above the 00:04:05.35\00:04:09.64 canyon floor. It was about five feet wide. 00:04:09.68\00:04:13.86 Beady black eyes followed Bastacio's every move. 00:04:14.88\00:04:18.69 Suddenly, the snake began to move forward rapidly. 00:04:18.73\00:04:22.52 I had just stopped at the ledge to catch my breath. 00:04:22.56\00:04:26.36 I looked up at the wall to plan my route to the top 00:04:26.40\00:04:30.17 when all of a sudden an enormous black snake 00:04:30.21\00:04:32.89 hurtled down directly towards me. 00:04:32.92\00:04:35.14 I screamed, "Jesus, save me!" 00:04:35.17\00:04:39.71 When I didn't feel anything hit me, I opened my eyes. 00:04:41.19\00:04:45.33 The snake was gone. I looked around the ledge 00:04:45.36\00:04:49.93 but there was no snake. 00:04:49.96\00:04:51.87 I searched the rocks below and further up the rock wall 00:04:51.90\00:04:56.11 but I didn't find it. 00:04:56.15\00:04:58.52 The snake had vanished. 00:04:58.56\00:05:00.89 I went home praising God for saving me 00:05:01.90\00:05:05.96 from certain death. 00:05:05.99\00:05:07.59 Ramon grew up high in the mountains of Mindoro. 00:05:25.20\00:05:28.00 One day a friend from his village came home with a Bible. 00:05:28.04\00:05:32.28 I could hardly believe it - a real book that talked to you? 00:05:35.19\00:05:41.12 I begged Lunito to make it talk for me. 00:05:41.15\00:05:44.59 He proudly opened the Bible and slowly traced the words 00:05:44.62\00:05:48.80 with his fingers. "In the beginning, God 00:05:48.83\00:05:52.94 created the heavens and the earth. 00:05:52.97\00:05:55.94 In the weeks and months that followed, Ramon watched 00:05:57.13\00:05:59.96 Lunito read the Bible. Lunito read about the powerful 00:05:59.99\00:06:03.30 God who answered prayers. Ramon decided to see if God 00:06:03.33\00:06:06.66 would answer his prayer. 00:06:06.69\00:06:08.37 "God," I prayed, "I want to learn to read as fast 00:06:09.60\00:06:12.89 as I can and to be able to write fast and neat. " 00:06:12.92\00:06:17.11 Amazingly, he soon began to pick out letters and words 00:06:17.14\00:06:20.72 Before long he was reading and writing on his own. 00:06:20.75\00:06:24.06 God had answered his prayer and taught him to 00:06:24.09\00:06:26.87 read and write. 00:06:26.90\00:06:28.61 God did care about him. 00:06:28.64\00:06:31.50 One day Ramon heard there were missionaries living in 00:06:31.53\00:06:33.98 Pandurukan. It only took one visit to the little village 00:06:34.01\00:06:37.50 at the foot of the mountains to light a burning desire in 00:06:37.53\00:06:40.35 his heart to know more about God and the Bible. 00:06:40.38\00:06:43.35 He longed to move to Pandurukan, but the elders 00:06:43.38\00:06:46.25 in his village refused. 00:06:46.28\00:06:48.02 One night Ramon had a dream. 00:06:48.05\00:06:50.52 Jesus stood before me. He was clothed in brilliant 00:06:52.52\00:06:55.80 white light. "Why have you called me?" Jesus asked. 00:06:55.83\00:06:59.56 "Oh, Jesus!" I cried. "I want to live in Pandurukan 00:06:59.59\00:07:03.66 so I can go to church and learn the answers 00:07:03.69\00:07:06.20 to my questions. " 00:07:06.23\00:07:07.71 "Don't worry, Ramon," Jesus said. "Soon you will 00:07:07.74\00:07:12.22 move there. " And He pointed over His shoulder in the 00:07:12.25\00:07:15.58 direction of Pandurukan. 00:07:15.61\00:07:17.55 Slowly the dream faded, and I woke up. 00:07:17.58\00:07:21.12 Ramon's desire to move to Pandurukan grew but the 00:07:21.15\00:07:25.12 elders still refused to let him move. 00:07:25.16\00:07:27.22 Then one day his wife, Dulian, fell to the floor of their hut, 00:07:28.52\00:07:31.95 unconscious. When she awoke, she had lost all feeling and 00:07:31.98\00:07:34.97 strength in the left side of her body. She had a hard 00:07:35.00\00:07:38.13 time breathing. Ramon was terrified and immediately 00:07:38.17\00:07:41.23 began praying for her healing. However, as the days slipped 00:07:41.26\00:07:44.53 into weeks and the village elders performed spirit 00:07:44.57\00:07:47.27 ceremonies, Dulian did not get better. 00:07:47.31\00:07:49.67 Finally, the village elders met to discuss the situation. 00:07:50.64\00:07:53.37 They decided Dulian wasn't getting better because Ramon 00:07:53.40\00:07:56.09 was reading the Bible. 00:07:56.12\00:07:57.32 I was devastated. How could I stop reading the Bible? 00:08:00.14\00:08:04.98 At last, I reluctantly promised to stop. However, late at night 00:08:05.02\00:08:10.94 after everyone was asleep, I would pull my blanket up 00:08:10.97\00:08:14.74 over my head and use my flashlight to read. 00:08:14.78\00:08:17.87 Weeks turned into months, but still there was no change 00:08:18.20\00:08:21.15 in Dulian's condition. One night, the village elders 00:08:21.19\00:08:24.27 caught Ramon reading. "Ramon, you will have to 00:08:24.31\00:08:27.00 stop reading the Bible! Don't you want you wife 00:08:27.03\00:08:29.68 to get well?" 00:08:29.72\00:08:31.01 Reluctantly, Ramon put the Bible away and didn't pray 00:08:31.75\00:08:34.91 or read the Bible for three months. 00:08:34.95\00:08:37.38 The elders continued Dulian's treatments with no results. 00:08:37.60\00:08:42.57 I became very discouraged. Why hadn't Jesus heard me 00:08:42.60\00:08:48.04 and healed my wife? Perhaps the old men are 00:08:48.08\00:08:51.28 right and there is nothing to this Jesus. 00:08:51.31\00:08:54.45 That night I had another dream that gave me the 00:08:54.48\00:08:58.52 desire to read the Bible and pray again. 00:08:58.56\00:09:00.84 One evening as Ramon was reading from the Old Testament, 00:09:00.87\00:09:03.88 the thought came to him that the patriarchs build altars 00:09:03.92\00:09:06.89 before they prayed. Why shouldn't he try it? 00:09:06.93\00:09:09.51 The next morning I hiked to a remote, secluded place 00:09:09.54\00:09:13.53 and began to construct an altar. When I was finished, 00:09:13.56\00:09:17.23 I dropped to my knees, clasped my hands together, 00:09:17.26\00:09:20.88 and poured out my request for healing for Dulian. 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.50 When I walked in the door, Dulian was sitting upright. 00:09:28.58\00:09:32.10 The hair on the back of my neck stood up. "Dulian!" 00:09:32.14\00:09:35.63 "You're well! How did this happen?" 00:09:35.66\00:09:38.11 "A little while ago," Dulian said, "I just felt like 00:09:38.14\00:09:41.92 sitting up. I can breathe fine now, see?" 00:09:41.95\00:09:45.66 And she took a deep breath. 00:09:45.70\00:09:47.81 Dulian's strength gradually returned until she was 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.79 working and walking as if she had never been ill. 00:09:51.82\00:09:55.10 Ramon's wish to move to Pandurukan grew even stronger. 00:09:55.13\00:09:58.20 But, the elders still refused to let them leave. 00:09:58.24\00:10:00.56 Then one day, after Ramon helped save the lives of many 00:10:02.45\00:10:05.30 sick children in the village, the elders allowed his family 00:10:05.33\00:10:08.14 to move to Pandurukan. 00:10:08.18\00:10:09.92 Within two weeks, he along with six other young men, 00:10:09.95\00:10:12.67 was baptized in a stream near the Amnay River. 00:10:12.70\00:10:15.54 Ramon has a heart for the Alangan people, and it seems 00:10:17.22\00:10:20.16 that God, through dreams and life experiences, has been 00:10:20.20\00:10:23.11 preparing Ramon to be a leader among the Alangan. 00:10:23.14\00:10:26.31 After Ramon moved to Pandurukan and was baptized, 00:10:26.34\00:10:29.19 he continued praying for the people of his village. 00:10:29.23\00:10:32.00 Time after time he visited with them and invited them to move 00:10:32.04\00:10:35.35 to Pandurukan so they could learn about God and the Bible. 00:10:35.38\00:10:38.71 Eventually, Ramon was able to see his entire village move 00:10:38.74\00:10:42.04 to Pandurukan, and all of the elders who once opposed 00:10:42.08\00:10:44.91 his reading the Bible and his move to Pandurukan, 00:10:44.95\00:10:47.75 were baptized. Today Ramon plays a key role 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.75 in the Alangan Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:10:50.79\00:10:53.72 I went to use the jeep and I started it up 00:11:00.68\00:11:03.26 and it had no oil pressure. 00:11:03.29\00:11:04.62 Sometimes things look the darkest before dawn. 00:11:04.65\00:11:08.43 One Sabbath we had a fellowship in Sablayan. 00:11:14.55\00:11:17.73 Usually the lowlander fellowships would try to 00:11:17.76\00:11:21.17 run a shuttle service with our jeep so that all the 00:11:21.21\00:11:24.19 church members in all the different Mangyan villages 00:11:24.22\00:11:27.17 could also attend. And so, this particular 00:11:27.20\00:11:29.59 Sabbath, Curtis was driving the jeep. During the dry 00:11:29.62\00:11:33.11 season, we like to use the shortcut through the Patrick 00:11:33.15\00:11:36.57 River. The problem is there are some deep canals that you have 00:11:36.61\00:11:40.46 to go in. And it had rained the night before, I believe, 00:11:40.50\00:11:43.74 so there was lots of water there. 00:11:43.78\00:11:45.42 Curtis had a jeep full of about 60-70 people, 00:11:45.45\00:11:49.37 so it was really loaded down. 00:11:49.40\00:11:50.79 And I think what happened is when it went down into the 00:11:50.82\00:11:53.90 water, it sucked up some of the water into the air 00:11:53.93\00:11:56.83 filter. And when it did that, it tried to burn the water 00:11:56.86\00:12:00.86 which raised the crankcase pressure and it blew the oil 00:12:00.89\00:12:04.85 cap off. Then when that happened, the increased 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.18 pressure as he drove along... the oil was just coming out 00:12:08.22\00:12:11.16 of the engine. He kept on driving, went to Sablayan, 00:12:11.19\00:12:14.78 people got off, we had a real good fellowship. We had some 00:12:14.81\00:12:18.48 baptisms. At about four-o'clock in the afternoon, they all 00:12:18.51\00:12:22.14 piled back on the jeep, and the jeep went back 00:12:22.18\00:12:25.03 through all those river crossings. 00:12:25.06\00:12:26.83 Well, Sunday morning I went to use the jeep and I 00:12:27.54\00:12:30.75 started it up and it had no oil pressure and it 00:12:30.78\00:12:34.13 sounded pretty bad. So I looked and pulled the 00:12:34.16\00:12:37.19 dipstick off and there was no oil on the dipstick. 00:12:37.22\00:12:40.80 And I thought, "Oh, no. The jeep engine is fried. " 00:12:40.83\00:12:44.38 I have worked in the automotive industry for 00:12:46.74\00:12:50.25 a good many years, and I have seen a lot of 00:12:50.28\00:12:53.24 vehicles that have gone through deep water and 00:12:53.28\00:12:56.38 sucked up water in the air intake systems. 00:12:56.41\00:12:59.54 I have never actually seen an engine run once 00:12:59.58\00:13:02.64 it got water in its cylinders. It usually destroys 00:13:02.67\00:13:06.23 the engine. So I got my oil pan and crawled under 00:13:06.26\00:13:09.79 the jeep and I drained pan after pan of nothing but 00:13:09.83\00:13:13.54 water and milk, which is like oil mixed with water. 00:13:13.58\00:13:16.80 At least two or two and a half of thoses were almost 00:13:16.84\00:13:20.03 clear - just like straight water. 00:13:20.06\00:13:21.66 After all of the water was out of the engine, there 00:13:21.69\00:13:25.46 was just like a drop, drop, drop... and that was all the oil 00:13:25.49\00:13:29.27 that was in the engine. 00:13:29.30\00:13:30.69 I thought, "Oh, no. Here we've just fried this vehicle. " 00:13:30.72\00:13:35.00 Sunday morning Tim kept coming up with bulletins 00:13:35.25\00:13:37.66 about how bad it was and how there was really no 00:13:37.69\00:13:40.03 oil and how there was water in everything. And there was 00:13:40.07\00:13:44.01 water every time he changed the oil. And he kept 00:13:44.04\00:13:46.37 going down to the nearest place to buy oil, and he would 00:13:46.40\00:13:48.83 buy more oil and he would come back and say, "I gotta 00:13:48.87\00:13:51.23 do it again. " That first little light was after the first water 00:13:51.27\00:13:54.84 was taken out. And he put the oil back in and he tried 00:13:54.88\00:13:57.37 to start the jeep. I think I probably went running down 00:13:57.41\00:14:00.31 there and said, "Is it really running?" Because we just 00:14:00.35\00:14:03.22 couldn't believe it would run again. So that was 00:14:03.25\00:14:04.92 exciting. We were so thrilled! 00:14:04.96\00:14:07.80 At the end of the day we pulled the jeep out of 00:14:08.73\00:14:11.13 the garage, out of the shed, and we called all the village 00:14:11.17\00:14:14.47 "Anybody who wants a ride?" And we all went to Palipappa, 00:14:14.51\00:14:17.74 the little market two kilometers away, just to see if it would 00:14:17.78\00:14:20.39 run. And sure - it ran the whole way, and we were 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.35 praising God. 00:14:22.38\00:14:23.56 You know, when I started the jeep up, the final time 00:14:25.32\00:14:28.58 with all the oil in it... smooth as silk, no knock, 00:14:28.61\00:14:31.80 no, no, any... I can't detect any difference in the engine 00:14:31.83\00:14:36.75 or in its power. It's not burning any oil. It's a 00:14:36.79\00:14:40.70 total miracle that it could have gone 50-60 kilometers 00:14:40.74\00:14:44.33 with no oil in the engine. It was wonderful. 00:14:44.36\00:14:47.81 I have worshiped the spirits all my life. When I got sick, 00:15:10.68\00:15:15.45 I would go to the witch doctor for healing. 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.70 Usually, he would kill a chicken and brush its wings 00:15:18.73\00:15:22.66 back and forth across my body as he prayed 00:15:22.69\00:15:25.50 to his favorite spirit. 00:15:25.53\00:15:27.30 It always seemed to work. 00:15:30.65\00:15:32.38 Well, there was a dry spell where we didn't have any 00:15:32.41\00:15:35.83 rain for quite a few months. And so all the Mangyan 00:15:35.87\00:15:39.22 mountain farms dried up and so they were very, very hungry. 00:15:39.25\00:15:43.12 Many people died of starvation. 00:15:43.62\00:15:46.36 We were so hungry, I decided it would be better 00:15:48.76\00:15:52.58 to kill one of the lowlander carabao than starve 00:15:52.61\00:15:56.40 to death. I took a few men with me and we went 00:15:56.44\00:16:00.09 down to where the carabao were grazing. 00:16:00.12\00:16:02.40 I knew it was wrong, but we killed some carabao anyway. 00:16:02.43\00:16:06.32 I don't know exactly whether they killed all three 00:16:06.35\00:16:09.41 in one night or whether they killed one one night 00:16:09.45\00:16:11.84 and one the next week and another the next week. 00:16:11.88\00:16:14.12 But, anyway, a total of three carabao were killed. 00:16:14.15\00:16:16.36 Of course, when the owners learned that their carabao 00:16:18.39\00:16:22.33 were dead, they were furious! 00:16:22.37\00:16:24.41 Groups of lowlanders made midnight raids on our villages. 00:16:25.23\00:16:29.39 They stole our goats and other livestock. They even 00:16:29.42\00:16:33.28 threatened to kill us. Finally, the mayor of the 00:16:33.32\00:16:37.11 biggest lowlander city near our village called a meeting. 00:16:37.15\00:16:41.06 So what happened is the mayor said those people 00:16:41.54\00:16:43.98 will pay for those carabao. They found out who actually did 00:16:44.01\00:16:47.15 the killing, and then they fined them either in a carabao 00:16:47.18\00:16:51.43 or the money to buy the equivalent carabao. 00:16:51.46\00:16:53.91 They took up a collection from all the villages and 00:16:53.94\00:16:56.39 payed off the fine and payed off the carabao. 00:16:56.42\00:16:58.72 Then those responsible had to work off their debt to 00:16:58.75\00:17:04.56 these other villages. Well, Mintu was assigned 00:17:04.60\00:17:08.59 to Pandurukan. 00:17:08.62\00:17:09.65 Rosita and I moved to Pandurukan to work off my debt. 00:17:10.68\00:17:15.57 One morning, I heard singing. It wasn't like most Alangan 00:17:15.60\00:17:20.49 songs, so I got up to invesigate. It was coming 00:17:20.52\00:17:23.97 from a building on the edge of the village. 00:17:24.00\00:17:27.42 Peeping around the door of the building, I saw men, women and 00:17:28.16\00:17:32.56 children with clean, shining faces. I slipped into the back 00:17:32.59\00:17:36.62 row and listened. I watched as a missionary told 00:17:36.65\00:17:40.57 wonderful stories. I enjoyed it so much; 00:17:40.61\00:17:44.80 I decided to come again. 00:17:44.84\00:17:46.91 Rosita never came with me, but at night I would share 00:17:49.66\00:17:53.83 what I had learned with her. 00:17:53.86\00:17:55.74 Not long after our arrival in Pandurukan, Rosita 00:17:56.26\00:18:00.52 and I had a little baby boy. We named him Simon. 00:18:00.55\00:18:04.35 When he was four months old, Simon got a cold. 00:18:04.38\00:18:07.68 He sniffled and shook his little head trying to breathe 00:18:07.71\00:18:11.98 easier. Nothing we did seemed to help. 00:18:12.01\00:18:15.53 In fact, it wasn't long before Simon had Pneumonia. 00:18:16.76\00:18:21.16 Rosita and I considered asking a witch doctor to 00:18:21.19\00:18:24.98 perform a spirit ceremony to fight the spirits, 00:18:25.01\00:18:28.06 but something inside me made me hesitate. 00:18:28.09\00:18:32.48 I knew from listening in church, that God was more 00:18:32.51\00:18:37.07 powerful than all the spirits. The next Sabbath 00:18:37.10\00:18:41.61 I asked the church members to pray for Simon. 00:18:41.64\00:18:44.65 Dawn Holbrook began giving him medicine and 00:18:44.68\00:18:48.88 steam treatments. 00:18:48.91\00:18:50.38 Sabbath afternoon we were in our AY afternoon program. 00:18:50.41\00:18:53.80 Suddenly, someone came running over to the AY and said, 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.77 "Ma'am, hurry up! Come quick! Simon is really sick. " 00:18:56.80\00:18:59.47 So I went with them. I could not believe how 00:18:59.50\00:19:02.04 he looked. It was not the same fat little healthy boy 00:19:02.07\00:19:04.78 I had started on an antibiotic yesterday. 00:19:04.81\00:19:06.93 He was sick. He was struggling to breathe. He was too weak 00:19:06.96\00:19:10.61 to even cough. He was laying flat in the hammock and that's 00:19:10.64\00:19:13.20 just really hard when you're having difficulty breathing. 00:19:13.23\00:19:16.08 So I had his mother sit him up, sit in the hammock, and 00:19:16.11\00:19:18.23 hold him upright in her lap. And I listened and there 00:19:18.26\00:19:21.20 was hardly any air moving in his lungs. 00:19:21.23\00:19:24.28 He was so sick his lips were turning blue and 00:19:24.31\00:19:26.74 his fingernails were blue. I prayed with Rosita that 00:19:26.77\00:19:29.51 he would be given life until the time that the 00:19:29.54\00:19:32.07 medicine would work. He was getting worse, 00:19:32.10\00:19:34.31 and getting worse and worse. 00:19:34.34\00:19:36.05 Simon was dying. His little face was pinched 00:19:38.90\00:19:43.64 and blue. Gradually, he became weaker. 00:19:43.67\00:19:47.56 His pulse flickered and faded. The end was very near. 00:19:47.59\00:19:53.26 Mintu said, "Pray for him!" So we prayed together and 00:19:53.29\00:19:57.46 I looked up and his head was drooping down and 00:19:57.49\00:19:59.64 his eyes were glazed over like they often do just before 00:19:59.67\00:20:02.55 they die. And he was just really struggling to move 00:20:02.58\00:20:06.50 any air. Just then, his head dropped onto his chest 00:20:06.53\00:20:10.27 and he wasn't breathing. Mintu said afterwards that 00:20:10.30\00:20:14.21 his pulse stopped. 00:20:14.24\00:20:15.50 Tim and Dawn and Libritu, one of the church elders, 00:20:15.53\00:20:19.95 knelt around Simon. We all bowed our heads 00:20:19.98\00:20:23.74 and prayed for Simon's healing. 00:20:23.77\00:20:25.98 When we finished praying, I could feel Simon's pulse again! 00:20:27.44\00:20:31.23 For hours we sat there and as he got better and 00:20:31.55\00:20:34.81 better, pretty soon they said, "You know, it's getting dark. " 00:20:34.84\00:20:37.62 It was sundown by now. "Why don't you go home?" 00:20:37.65\00:20:39.80 He's doing okay. " And the mother started 00:20:39.83\00:20:41.37 cooking supper and the villagers started dispersing. 00:20:41.40\00:20:44.50 So I went home and we praised God that Simon 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.01 was alive. Then I went back at eight o'clock and the 00:20:47.04\00:20:50.68 picture had totally changed. Simon was laying on a bamboo 00:20:50.72\00:20:53.81 mat on the floor. He was lying flat on his back. 00:20:53.85\00:20:56.84 His breathing was normal. There were no retractions 00:20:56.88\00:21:00.20 of his neck muscles or his chest. His eyes were bright 00:21:00.23\00:21:03.67 clear and brown. His skin was just the normal soft, 00:21:03.71\00:21:07.11 baby soft brown and he looked at me and smiled 00:21:07.15\00:21:10.54 as if he knew what had happened. 00:21:10.57\00:21:12.72 The following Sabbath, Rosita and a smiling, 00:21:12.81\00:21:17.00 healthy Simon came with me to church. 00:21:17.03\00:21:20.32 I shared how God had healed Simon and how 00:21:20.36\00:21:23.61 Rosita was now coming to church. 00:21:23.65\00:21:25.92 God allowed me to commit a serious crime, 00:21:25.96\00:21:29.60 used that crime to bring me to live in a place 00:21:29.64\00:21:32.77 where I could hear the gospel, and then allowed 00:21:32.80\00:21:35.90 my only boy to nearly die, all to show His 00:21:35.93\00:21:39.31 mighty power and cause my faith to grow. 00:21:39.35\00:21:42.69 That is the greatest miracle. 00:21:42.73\00:21:46.09 One night Lunito came up to our door and 00:22:05.50\00:22:09.91 gave us a bunch of bananas. And we started 00:22:09.95\00:22:14.20 talking, and he told us that we had a fire and 00:22:14.24\00:22:18.46 "God saved me. " 00:22:18.49\00:22:19.95 And we said, "You had a fire and God saved you?" 00:22:19.98\00:22:23.21 "Tell us about it. " 00:22:23.24\00:22:24.40 He was out building a rice paddy in the delta 00:22:24.44\00:22:29.61 area of the Amnay River. 00:22:29.64\00:22:31.20 One day he was working there and Atorney 00:22:31.23\00:22:35.08 one of the young people was helping him and 00:22:35.11\00:22:38.92 also an old man who has TB that Lunito 00:22:38.96\00:22:43.49 has been treating... They built a little doghouse like - 00:22:43.52\00:22:47.20 I call them dog houses - they are little... just a piece of 00:22:47.23\00:22:50.88 thatching maybe four feet high, and that's where 00:22:50.91\00:22:54.16 they stay at night. 00:22:54.20\00:22:55.59 Well, the old man and Atorney were sitting 00:22:55.62\00:22:57.72 in there cooking their noon meal. But all of a sudden 00:22:57.76\00:23:00.80 Atorney and the old man smelled smoke, and so 00:23:00.83\00:23:03.85 they look out behind their house, and here's 00:23:03.88\00:23:06.71 this wall of flame coming down towards them. 00:23:06.74\00:23:09.50 This fire was like a mile long and about, you know, 00:23:09.53\00:23:15.04 30-40 feet high. 00:23:15.08\00:23:16.39 And the wind was blowing it directly towards them. 00:23:16.43\00:23:18.73 And they call, "Lunito! Lunito!" But he doesn't hear 00:23:22.71\00:23:26.19 them because he is so far away and he is busy 00:23:26.22\00:23:29.26 working and clearing. They keep hollering 00:23:29.29\00:23:32.26 at him, and Lunito never looks up until he smells 00:23:32.29\00:23:35.39 the smoke. And then he looks up and he sees this 00:23:35.42\00:23:38.64 wall of fire. And he just runs toward the hut. 00:23:38.68\00:23:42.46 He grabs his knife and tells Atorney to start 00:23:42.49\00:23:45.49 clearing a space around the huts so that maybe 00:23:45.53\00:23:48.58 the fire will jump over. Well, after a few minutes 00:23:48.61\00:23:51.63 they realize there is no way they are going 00:23:51.66\00:23:53.73 to do that with this wall of flame coming 00:23:53.76\00:23:56.11 towards them. So what they did is he sent 00:23:56.14\00:23:58.74 Atorney back to the hut and he stood 00:23:58.77\00:24:01.33 between the hut and the wall of flame. 00:24:01.37\00:24:04.61 The fire came within a foot of my huts. 00:24:04.64\00:24:08.01 There was nothing I could do, so I prayed, 00:24:08.04\00:24:11.68 "God, if You want us to live, please save us. " 00:24:11.71\00:24:16.05 Immediately after I prayed, a wind came from behind 00:24:16.09\00:24:20.39 me and blew straight into the fire. 00:24:20.42\00:24:23.26 When he prayed, the fire had come up within 00:24:24.14\00:24:26.72 a foot of his hut. 00:24:26.76\00:24:28.54 The fire split in two and went over and around the huts. 00:24:30.36\00:24:35.95 The winds were so forceful that you could see 00:24:36.38\00:24:39.81 smoke and stuff swirling on the edges, and he could hear 00:24:39.85\00:24:42.92 the howling of the wind as the two winds hit. 00:24:42.96\00:24:46.09 So when I heard that, I was sick with Malaria 00:24:47.34\00:24:49.90 and I was really hardly moving. But I said, 00:24:49.94\00:24:52.47 "This I got to see!" 00:24:52.50\00:24:55.33 So the next day we took Lunito and Dawn and 00:24:56.16\00:24:59.70 myself and John and got in the jeep and drove out as far as we 00:24:59.73\00:25:02.94 could and then hiked in quite a way. 00:25:02.97\00:25:04.75 We walked through some rice paddies and just kept 00:25:04.99\00:25:08.91 walking and walking and pretty soon it just 00:25:08.95\00:25:11.58 got into a dry river bed. He said, "Now here is 00:25:11.62\00:25:14.22 where I plow. " And we walked across 00:25:14.26\00:25:15.64 and where the plowing stopped, There was just the saw 00:25:15.67\00:25:19.23 grass standing - a little bit of it - but it was just black. 00:25:19.26\00:25:22.44 All the canes were just black all up and down. 00:25:22.48\00:25:24.89 He said, "This is where the fire was. " 00:25:24.92\00:25:26.61 There was his little hut, and the clearing was 00:25:26.65\00:25:29.78 maybe 20 feet across, and we walked until we came 00:25:29.82\00:25:32.97 to the hut. We were walking through black that had been 00:25:33.01\00:25:35.18 charred and burned. We came to the first 00:25:35.21\00:25:37.28 hut and we walked out onto new sand. 00:25:37.32\00:25:39.31 And we looked at the spot and sure enough. The hut was 00:25:39.35\00:25:43.75 right here - six inches away from the back of the hut 00:25:43.78\00:25:49.03 there was a line of black grass, just charred ground. 00:25:49.07\00:25:53.65 And then you could see on the sides where the fire 00:25:53.68\00:25:58.23 continued on down. 00:25:58.27\00:25:59.73 This brown dry grass had no ashes on it. 00:25:59.77\00:26:02.94 None of the grass had been touched. Cinders 00:26:02.97\00:26:05.62 hadn't blown over, the ashes hadn't blown in. 00:26:05.66\00:26:08.24 And Lunito was showing me there's - it was maybe this far 00:26:08.28\00:26:11.13 between a tree and his house. And I walked all the way around 00:26:11.16\00:26:13.98 them, and you can see the grass coming up to behind 00:26:14.01\00:26:17.18 their house is black. And right at the house, 00:26:17.21\00:26:20.76 almost where the grass is going going off into the ground 00:26:20.79\00:26:24.05 almost to that very thatching, it's black. 00:26:24.08\00:26:27.02 We didn't see how that could happen other than 00:26:27.06\00:26:29.96 it was a total miracle. 00:26:30.00\00:26:31.73 It just gave me goosebumps to be there. 00:26:31.76\00:26:34.18 I'm thankful that God sent the cold wind to spare our 00:26:35.04\00:26:39.14 lives, so I can continue to serve Him. 00:26:39.18\00:26:42.33 These stories and countless others like them are ample 00:26:54.10\00:26:57.29 evidence that God is working mightily among the Alangan. 00:26:57.33\00:27:00.48 Miracles? If you ask Lunito, 00:27:00.52\00:27:03.46 he will tell you he has witnessed with his own eyes 00:27:03.49\00:27:05.67 God's hand at work. 00:27:05.70\00:27:07.48 Ask Mintu or Ramon, and they will tell you the 00:27:07.98\00:27:11.10 same thing. 00:27:11.14\00:27:12.34 God works through miracles today. 00:27:12.38\00:27:15.34 Adventist Frontier Missions trains and equips ordinary 00:27:20.54\00:27:23.54 people for the extraordinary task of reaching into 00:27:23.58\00:27:26.34 unreached people groups, raising up new believers 00:27:26.37\00:27:29.28 and planting growing churches. Just like Tim and Dawn 00:27:29.31\00:27:32.19 Holbrook, AFM has dozens of other missionaries 00:27:32.22\00:27:34.65 around the world, raising up new believers in unreached 00:27:34.68\00:27:37.86 people groups. 00:27:37.89\00:27:38.86 Would you like to make a significant impact on 00:27:39.12\00:27:40.98 the world for Christ through missions? 00:27:41.02\00:27:42.73 There are three ways you can do that. 00:27:42.77\00:27:44.41 First of all, you can pray. Jesus asked us to pray. 00:27:44.45\00:27:48.06 He said, "Pray for the harvest, for the harvest is great, but 00:27:48.10\00:27:50.81 the laborers are few.
