- [Announcer] This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.16\00:00:03.60 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.60\00:00:06.60 - After losing his godly mother, 00:00:09.20\00:00:10.87 when he was just seven years old, 00:00:10.87\00:00:12.74 John began to hang out with the wrong crowd. 00:00:12.74\00:00:15.68 Disturbed by his delinquency, 00:00:15.68\00:00:17.48 his father, a sea captain, 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.31 began taking him along on ocean voyages, 00:00:19.31\00:00:22.32 but John's life soon spiraled 00:00:22.32\00:00:24.19 into increasingly bad behavior. 00:00:24.19\00:00:26.69 After being pressed into the British Royal Navy, 00:00:26.69\00:00:29.79 John gave up on God entirely. 00:00:29.79\00:00:32.19 He adopted atheism and he loved tormenting Christians 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.33 with his blasphemy. 00:00:35.33\00:00:37.00 Consumed with anger and hate, 00:00:37.00\00:00:39.13 the rebel's life overflowed with misery and despair. 00:00:39.13\00:00:42.64 Eventually he signed on as a crew member on a slave ship, 00:00:42.64\00:00:46.24 but through a strange turn of Providence, 00:00:46.24\00:00:48.44 John became a slave himself. 00:00:48.44\00:00:51.08 When finally rescued, 00:00:51.08\00:00:52.31 John continued in his reckless lifestyle 00:00:52.31\00:00:54.62 of cursing, fighting and drinking, 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.79 but all of this dramatically changed 00:00:56.79\00:00:58.75 during a terrifying storm at sea 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.12 when John Newton, the author of the best loved hymn, 00:01:01.12\00:01:03.99 "Amazing Grace," finally acknowledged his need of Christ. 00:01:03.99\00:01:08.16 John Newton's dramatic and famous conversion 00:01:08.16\00:01:10.50 certainly isn't unique. 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.10 I personally know of thousands of remarkable accounts 00:01:12.10\00:01:15.64 of people from all ages 00:01:15.64\00:01:17.41 who've experienced total transformation 00:01:17.41\00:01:19.87 through the incredible power, love, and grace of Christ, 00:01:19.87\00:01:23.04 myself included. 00:01:23.04\00:01:24.68 I invite you now to join me 00:01:24.68\00:01:26.51 as I share my own personal testimony, 00:01:26.51\00:01:28.82 and I pray that you'll be blessed. 00:01:28.82\00:01:30.59 Everybody in life wants to be happy. 00:01:34.66\00:01:37.09 And many people in the world think that happiness 00:01:38.43\00:01:40.13 comes from either physical pleasure, 00:01:40.13\00:01:43.67 or, "If I could be wealthy enough," 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.37 or, "If I could be more beautiful or more popular 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.97 than I'd have real happiness." 00:01:48.97\00:01:50.91 And so many people go through life 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.71 dissatisfied with what they do have 00:01:52.71\00:01:55.58 wanting something else, 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.51 and I've learned that happiness 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.75 does not come from those things. 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.08 Now I'll start by giving you a little background, 00:02:02.08\00:02:04.15 tell you about my parents briefly. 00:02:04.15\00:02:05.92 Mother and father were as opposite as you could get. 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.42 My mother grew up Jewish background, 00:02:09.42\00:02:11.96 but she wasn't practicing. 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.00 My father grew up with a Baptist background, 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.96 but he pretty much became an atheist after World War II. 00:02:15.96\00:02:18.83 He was a pilot, captain in the air force 00:02:18.83\00:02:21.40 and flew in Europe during World War II, 00:02:21.40\00:02:25.14 but he became very successful. 00:02:25.14\00:02:28.21 He started buying army surplus planes 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.65 and built it into an airline delivering cargo, 00:02:30.65\00:02:34.22 then delivering passengers, 00:02:34.22\00:02:35.58 and at one time he owned two airlines. 00:02:35.58\00:02:38.65 He knew a lot of very wealthy, powerful people 00:02:38.65\00:02:41.56 like Howard Hughes and others in that business, 00:02:41.56\00:02:44.79 and he grew into a multi-millionaire. 00:02:44.79\00:02:49.03 Started in LA, moved the business to Miami, 00:02:49.03\00:02:52.47 had a company called Batch Air. 00:02:52.47\00:02:54.50 Now, here he is, this is wife number four, 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.27 meeting Pope John Paul II. 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.11 If you got enough money, you can... 00:02:59.11\00:03:00.54 He met presidents and he knew a lot of people. 00:03:00.54\00:03:02.81 He was a philanthropist, gave a lot of money away, 00:03:02.81\00:03:05.38 but that's not where happiness comes from. 00:03:07.15\00:03:09.88 My dad used to drink himself to sleep every night. 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.35 He was so stressed. 00:03:12.35\00:03:14.29 Jesus said, "A man's life does not consist 00:03:14.29\00:03:16.59 in the abundance of things he possesses." 00:03:16.59\00:03:19.89 The Lord tells us, "Do not lay up 00:03:19.89\00:03:21.53 treasures on earth for yourself." 00:03:21.53\00:03:24.27 In our garage, we had Rolls-Royce. 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.67 This is not my dad's Rolls. 00:03:28.67\00:03:29.84 I just grabbed one online. 00:03:29.84\00:03:31.07 He had a white Rolls-Royce, a Maserati, 00:03:31.07\00:03:34.68 stepmother had a Jaguar, Ferraris, 00:03:34.68\00:03:37.95 I mean, they had all the toys. 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.35 Had fighting, coldness, unhappiness in the family, 00:03:40.35\00:03:43.52 and I thought, "What's the purpose of life? 00:03:43.52\00:03:46.15 Nobody seems to be happy." 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.66 "Thieves break through and steal. 00:03:48.96\00:03:51.39 Rust and moth corrupt," the Bible tells us. 00:03:51.39\00:03:55.06 So that's dad's side. 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.57 Mom, I don't know how they ever got married. 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.60 He was a Republican. She was a Democrat. 00:03:59.60\00:04:02.60 He was a redneck from Oklahoma. 00:04:02.60\00:04:04.17 She was a hippie from New York City. 00:04:04.17\00:04:06.34 That's maybe why they divorced 00:04:07.14\00:04:08.51 when I was three years of age. 00:04:08.51\00:04:10.21 It didn't last that long. 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.08 But mom was very talented. 00:04:12.08\00:04:14.25 She did not have much formal education, but she could sing, 00:04:14.25\00:04:19.02 she could write. 00:04:19.02\00:04:19.82 She was an attractive lady. 00:04:19.82\00:04:21.72 And she started writing songs for Elvis Presley 00:04:21.72\00:04:24.19 when she was still a teenager, 00:04:24.19\00:04:25.86 and recorded two or three with Elvis. 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.40 But she had songs that were in movies like "Stagecoach," 00:04:27.40\00:04:31.33 and she knew people like Frank Sinatra, 00:04:31.33\00:04:35.07 and Andy Williams recorded her songs, 00:04:35.07\00:04:38.34 and she wrote some standards. 00:04:38.34\00:04:39.87 She was an actress. 00:04:41.08\00:04:42.38 If you've ever seen the movie, "The Ten Commandments," 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.78 mom had a really little part in that movie. 00:04:44.78\00:04:47.52 And I'd tell the kids, I said, "There goes grandma." 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.82 That was it. (audience laughing) 00:04:49.82\00:04:52.29 But she did some acting in a couple of movies in Hollywood. 00:04:52.29\00:04:56.42 At that time she started having kids, 00:04:57.49\00:04:59.56 and so she gave that up and she became a film critic. 00:04:59.56\00:05:03.03 And I'm condensing her whole life very quickly, 00:05:04.97\00:05:07.27 but she was the president of the Film Critics 00:05:07.27\00:05:10.21 in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. 00:05:10.21\00:05:12.24 And in that position, 00:05:12.24\00:05:13.24 it's a very powerful position 00:05:13.24\00:05:14.74 because she knew everybody in Hollywood. 00:05:14.74\00:05:17.45 If a movie came out, 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.31 and they spend millions of dollars on these movies, 00:05:19.31\00:05:22.48 if the film critic gave a bad review, 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.42 then their income went down, 00:05:25.42\00:05:27.89 and so they were always afraid of the power of her. 00:05:27.89\00:05:31.23 She was a film critic on "Good Morning America," 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.96 and replaced Rona Barrett. 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.90 And I just threw in a few pictures. 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.30 I could just sit here all day and show you pictures of mom. 00:05:37.30\00:05:40.14 But like here's mom with Muhammad Ali, 00:05:40.14\00:05:43.10 with Sir Paul McCartney, 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.57 Sylvester Stallone, Natalie Wood. 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.04 Some people think she looked a little bit like Natalie Wood. 00:05:48.04\00:05:51.71 Roger Moore, he was one of the James Bonds, 00:05:51.71\00:05:54.05 Sally Field, who's still alive. 00:05:54.05\00:05:57.35 There's mom with Clint Eastwood, and Paul Newman, 00:05:57.35\00:05:59.95 and Benji the Dog. 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.62 I dunno if anyone remembers that. 00:06:01.62\00:06:03.89 So I just show you these to let you know 00:06:03.89\00:06:06.13 that when I was with mom... 00:06:06.13\00:06:07.50 Now dad, I was born in Burbank, California. 00:06:07.50\00:06:10.50 Dad and mom split. 00:06:11.67\00:06:12.77 He ended up moving his business to Miami Beach. 00:06:12.77\00:06:14.64 Mom moved to New York City. 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.87 My brother and I moved around 00:06:16.87\00:06:18.74 through these different places. 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.34 When she died, she was all alone. 00:06:22.34\00:06:24.05 And we saw growing up these people that had lots of money 00:06:25.41\00:06:29.18 and they had lots of influence and fame, 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.72 and we knew some of them, that good looking, 00:06:31.72\00:06:35.79 wealthy, healthy, miserable, killed themselves. 00:06:35.79\00:06:39.96 And I used to think, "Why? 00:06:39.96\00:06:42.76 Does life have any purpose?" 00:06:42.76\00:06:44.67 And so that was the thing that struck me. 00:06:45.77\00:06:48.37 Then I decided I'm just gonna, 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.44 I'm gonna try and have all the fun I can. 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.61 I saw this commercial where it said, 00:06:54.61\00:06:58.58 "You only go around once in life. 00:06:58.58\00:07:00.15 get all the gusto you can." 00:07:00.15\00:07:01.72 I thought, "All right, well, I'm gonna die having fun. 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.35 I'm gonna just have as much fun as I can 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.55 and just go out enjoying myself." 00:07:06.55\00:07:08.56 And I started to live a very reckless life. 00:07:08.56\00:07:10.96 I began using drugs. 00:07:10.96\00:07:12.53 I started smoking when I was 13, 00:07:12.53\00:07:13.53 'cause mom and dad both smoked 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.96 and I'd just take their cigarettes. 00:07:15.96\00:07:18.47 Then mom used to smoke pot. 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.54 And one night she said, "Now well Doug, 00:07:22.60\00:07:23.97 I know that you're gonna end up 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.07 being exposed to this out on the streets." 00:07:25.07\00:07:27.98 And she said, "I'd just as soon you did it here at home." 00:07:27.98\00:07:30.35 So she started to smoke pot with me 00:07:30.35\00:07:31.85 two or three times a week, or hashish, 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.08 and we'd eat ice cream and watch TV. 00:07:34.08\00:07:37.12 But you know, and so when I was with mom, 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.32 I began to use drugs at home, 00:07:41.32\00:07:43.49 and then when I was with dad in Florida... 00:07:43.49\00:07:45.46 This is actually a Google Earth photo 00:07:45.46\00:07:48.10 of the island that dad lived on. 00:07:48.10\00:07:50.50 It's still there today, Sunset Island Number One, 00:07:50.50\00:07:52.40 and he had that house on the top of the picture, 00:07:52.40\00:07:55.04 right on the water with the dock, 00:07:55.04\00:07:57.44 and had security guards that kept you 00:07:57.44\00:08:00.08 from going on the island. 00:08:00.08\00:08:01.41 Had a butler, a maid. 00:08:02.74\00:08:04.41 Dad had a bar in the house bigger than some bars 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.78 you might find in a city. 00:08:07.78\00:08:09.38 So whenever I wanted to go drink, 00:08:09.38\00:08:10.82 my friends and I would go drink all we wanted. 00:08:10.82\00:08:13.09 And so I learned how to drink with dad. 00:08:13.09\00:08:16.49 And he never realized it was missing 00:08:16.49\00:08:18.93 because the butler kept replacing it 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.76 thinking dad was just drinking more. 00:08:20.76\00:08:23.26 And so my friends and I would often party during the day 00:08:23.26\00:08:27.14 and I started drinking. 00:08:27.14\00:08:28.70 And by the way, all drugs are bad, 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.47 but more of my friends have died from alcohol than anything. 00:08:34.14\00:08:37.81 And I just mention that because I encounter Christians 00:08:37.81\00:08:40.68 every now and then that think drinking a little bit is okay. 00:08:40.68\00:08:43.59 I'll tell you friends, 00:08:43.59\00:08:44.99 one outta seven people that drinks becomes an alcoholic, 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.49 and it's just caused all kinds of misery in our society. 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.66 Christians shouldn't drink anything, any alcohol. 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.19 But then I started getting into more and more trouble. 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.43 I ran away from home the first time when I was 13. 00:08:57.43\00:09:00.14 Went up to the hills. 00:09:01.64\00:09:02.67 I always felt drawn to the hills. 00:09:02.67\00:09:05.24 Ran away the last time when I was 15. 00:09:05.24\00:09:06.98 Dad said, "I don't know what to do with you." 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.28 I was just getting into trouble 00:09:08.28\00:09:10.15 with the police and drugs, 00:09:10.15\00:09:11.68 and I'm condensing the story. 00:09:12.71\00:09:14.22 I left home. 00:09:15.08\00:09:16.72 This is actually a picture from when I was 16 years old, 00:09:16.72\00:09:19.12 a passport picture, and just started hitchhiking. 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.82 I went from Florida to Maine. 00:09:21.82\00:09:25.19 I had lied on my driver's license, 00:09:25.19\00:09:27.86 I'm born in 57. 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.23 I turned the seven into a two on my learner's permit. 00:09:29.23\00:09:31.57 I used that permit to get one that said I was born in 1952, 00:09:31.57\00:09:34.90 which made me old enough to buy alcohol and to get a job. 00:09:34.90\00:09:38.04 So I moved to Boston with some very undesirable friends 00:09:38.04\00:09:42.84 and we began to break into homes and to steal, 00:09:42.84\00:09:45.81 steal cars, steal televisions, 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.82 and it was getting a little more heavy duty. 00:09:47.82\00:09:51.02 And I had a part-time job as a security guard 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.79 during that time. (audience chuckling) 00:09:53.79\00:09:54.82 I know, it's really bizarre. 00:09:54.82\00:09:56.49 And I never stole from the people I was guarding, 00:09:56.49\00:09:58.56 'cause I thought, "Well, they're paying me. 00:09:58.56\00:09:59.69 They trust me. That wouldn't be right." 00:09:59.69\00:10:01.86 But I had a friend who was a security guard 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.17 and he knew about my day job. 00:10:05.17\00:10:06.94 See, I'd guard places at night, 00:10:06.94\00:10:08.20 I'd steal during the day 00:10:08.20\00:10:09.34 'cause if you walk out of someone's apartment 00:10:09.34\00:10:10.94 with a TV during the day, 00:10:10.94\00:10:12.27 they think you're moving. 00:10:12.27\00:10:13.58 You do it at night, you look suspicious. 00:10:14.71\00:10:16.91 My friend, he found out about what my day job was 00:10:16.91\00:10:21.98 and he said, "Doug, your karma's gonna get you." 00:10:23.12\00:10:25.75 I said, "You gonna turn me in?" 00:10:25.75\00:10:26.86 He said, "No, no, your karma's gonna get you." 00:10:26.86\00:10:28.46 I said, "What's karma?" 00:10:28.46\00:10:30.03 He said, "Whatever you do, it comes back." 00:10:30.03\00:10:32.03 I said, "Ah, there's no God. 00:10:32.03\00:10:33.40 There's no such thing." 00:10:33.40\00:10:35.16 He said, "You'll see." 00:10:35.16\00:10:36.33 And I started watching. 00:10:37.93\00:10:39.90 You know, that principle is actually in the Bible 00:10:39.90\00:10:41.87 where it says, "Do unto others 00:10:41.87\00:10:43.20 as you would have them do unto you. 00:10:43.20\00:10:44.81 And with what measure you mete, 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.01 it'll be measured back to you." 00:10:46.01\00:10:47.64 You call it on the street, 00:10:48.68\00:10:49.91 "What goes around, comes around." 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.38 I said, "Nah, there's no God." 00:10:51.38\00:10:52.85 He said, "You'll find out." 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.62 I dunno if he was praying for me or what was happening, 00:10:55.62\00:10:56.99 but not too long after that, 00:10:56.99\00:10:59.39 I woke up in my apartment in Boston 00:10:59.39\00:11:02.26 and my door was open and my TV was gone, 00:11:02.26\00:11:04.79 and my radio, and you should have seen, 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.36 I was so indignant, I called the police and said, 00:11:08.36\00:11:10.00 "You gotta track down these thieves. 00:11:10.00\00:11:11.60 What's happening to our neighborhood?" 00:11:11.60\00:11:13.20 (audience laughing) 00:11:13.20\00:11:15.00 And I started watching, and everything I did backfired. 00:11:15.00\00:11:18.11 I would steal something, and my friends were all thieves, 00:11:18.11\00:11:21.28 they'd steal it from me. 00:11:21.28\00:11:22.81 Or I'd steal something while I was drinking or high, 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.28 and then I'd forget where I hid it 00:11:25.28\00:11:27.38 and I'd wake up and I couldn't find it. 00:11:27.38\00:11:29.02 Or I'd risk my life to steal something, 00:11:29.02\00:11:31.22 and it was broken. 00:11:31.22\00:11:32.39 I'd steal a stereo and plug it in, 00:11:33.49\00:11:35.02 it didn't even work. 00:11:35.02\00:11:36.09 And you know what finally convinced me was a small thing. 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.49 I didn't just quit stealing cold turkey. 00:11:39.49\00:11:41.60 I tried to taper off, 00:11:41.60\00:11:42.96 'cause I noticed that I went to someone's house 00:11:44.70\00:11:47.24 and I stole a box of Krusteaz Instant Pancake Mix. 00:11:47.24\00:11:50.81 And I did it because I was very health conscious. 00:11:50.81\00:11:54.31 I'm drinking and using drugs and smoking, 00:11:55.48\00:11:57.55 but I only wanted whole wheat pancake mix 00:11:57.55\00:12:00.25 because I was very health conscious. 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.62 (audience laughing) 00:12:01.62\00:12:02.72 And so I stole this person's pancake mix, 00:12:02.72\00:12:05.92 and it cost $1.19. 00:12:05.92\00:12:07.69 The blue stamp of the price was on the top of the box. 00:12:07.69\00:12:10.53 That very same day, 00:12:10.53\00:12:12.59 some friends went through my place 00:12:12.59\00:12:13.93 and they took my jar of Tang Instant Breakfast Drink. 00:12:13.93\00:12:16.93 Anyone remember that? - [Audience Member] Yeah. 00:12:16.93\00:12:18.70 - And I had a brand new jar, 00:12:18.70\00:12:20.24 and there on top of the jar it was stamped $1.19. 00:12:20.24\00:12:22.54 and I looked at the pancake mix, 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.31 my friends had drunk my whole jar. 00:12:24.31\00:12:26.57 It was gone, and there was an empty jar with a lid 00:12:26.57\00:12:30.48 and I thought, "Crime doesn't pay. 00:12:30.48\00:12:31.98 There must be a God." 00:12:31.98\00:12:33.72 Once I realized there was a God, 00:12:33.72\00:12:35.65 I thought, "Wow, I better start searching." 00:12:35.65\00:12:38.22 Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:12:39.59\00:12:40.96 In just a moment we'll return 00:12:40.96\00:12:42.32 for the rest of today's presentation. 00:12:42.32\00:12:44.79 Did you know the Bible is the only book 00:12:44.79\00:12:47.03 that has remained on the best seller list year after year? You'll have adventures." 00:15:18.05\00:15:20.75 I thought, "Well, all right." 00:15:21.55\00:15:22.92 So right from there he flew me to Genoa, Italy. 00:15:22.92\00:15:27.82 And I'm at the school, they were in Naples, 00:15:27.82\00:15:30.56 and put me on this boat, 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.96 and I found out I'd been tricked a little bit. 00:15:32.96\00:15:34.63 This is actually from the website, a picture of the 00:15:34.63\00:15:37.27 school, the two ships that we sailed on. 00:15:37.27\00:15:38.93 It was a school for the children 00:15:41.87\00:15:44.14 of wealthy politicians and millionaires 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.21 that had gotten involved in drugs or some cult 00:15:46.21\00:15:49.34 to get them out of their environment 00:15:49.34\00:15:51.48 and to try and straighten them out through isolation. 00:15:51.48\00:15:54.22 Very expensive, very sophisticated. 00:15:54.22\00:15:56.35 And they teach atheism. 00:15:56.35\00:15:58.69 They indoctrinate you with atheism. 00:15:58.69\00:16:00.66 They show you films of Darwin. 00:16:00.66\00:16:02.56 You're always reading Ayn Rand books. 00:16:02.56\00:16:04.46 I mean it was... 00:16:04.46\00:16:05.69 And now I'm very religious. 00:16:05.69\00:16:07.66 Now I'm meditating trying to find God in my DNA. 00:16:07.66\00:16:10.50 I was playing my flute down in my cabin. 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.00 And I sort of rebelled. 00:16:14.00\00:16:15.00 I got into a lot of trouble. 00:16:15.00\00:16:16.54 One thing I learned though 00:16:16.54\00:16:17.67 that I thought was very interesting, 00:16:17.67\00:16:18.81 is even though now everyone on board 00:16:18.81\00:16:20.98 claimed to be an atheist, 00:16:20.98\00:16:22.38 we were sailing from Northern Africa 00:16:23.45\00:16:25.21 over to Spain just before Christmas, 00:16:25.21\00:16:27.88 and we encountered a terrible storm. 00:16:29.02\00:16:32.02 And I know on a map the Mediterranean doesn't look very 00:16:32.02\00:16:34.56 big, but if you get out in the middle of it in a storm, 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.59 it looks very big. 00:16:36.59\00:16:38.53 And the waves got to be 25, 30 feet. 00:16:38.53\00:16:41.66 And the bow of the ship was going through the waves, 00:16:41.66\00:16:44.37 and parts of the wave would roll across the boat 00:16:44.37\00:16:46.77 and things were washing overboard. 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.57 The wind picked up. 00:16:48.57\00:16:49.64 It was like a hurricane and the sail ripped 00:16:49.64\00:16:51.67 and the boat's rocking back and forth. 00:16:51.67\00:16:53.64 So you go below deck and everybody's bunks 00:16:53.64\00:16:56.54 and books and things were all tossed helter-skelter 00:16:56.54\00:16:59.71 in the bottom of the ship. 00:16:59.71\00:17:00.58 And everybody was seasick. 00:17:00.58\00:17:02.68 And the captain was seasick. 00:17:03.99\00:17:06.52 And the water was very cold, 00:17:07.52\00:17:08.96 and the captain said, 00:17:08.96\00:17:10.06 "Look, if you get blown overboard, 00:17:10.06\00:17:11.89 we need to let you know, 00:17:11.89\00:17:12.69 you have to be very careful 00:17:12.69\00:17:13.80 because we can't turn around and get you. 00:17:13.80\00:17:16.10 We will mark the spot. 00:17:16.10\00:17:17.43 But in this storm, if we turn around we'll capsize." 00:17:17.43\00:17:20.37 I mean, it was that scary. 00:17:20.37\00:17:21.60 What do you think atheists do in a storm 00:17:21.60\00:17:23.61 when they think they're gonna die? 00:17:23.61\00:17:25.34 Nobody needed any lessons. 00:17:26.44\00:17:28.28 And everybody knew what to say. 00:17:29.38\00:17:31.05 So, and I was praying too. 00:17:32.01\00:17:33.98 And they're all making promises. 00:17:33.98\00:17:35.35 People know what to confess when they're about to die. 00:17:35.35\00:17:37.15 They don't need any... 00:17:37.15\00:17:38.42 They know what's wrong. 00:17:38.42\00:17:40.26 Well, about this time, 00:17:40.26\00:17:42.69 when they gave us Christmas break, I took off. 00:17:44.83\00:17:48.26 I said, "I'm never going back to this school again." 00:17:48.26\00:17:50.60 I went home. 00:17:50.60\00:17:51.70 I sold everything I had to my brother, 00:17:51.70\00:17:52.83 and I took off and I started hitch hiking 00:17:52.83\00:17:55.40 from Miami, Florida to California. 00:17:55.40\00:17:57.87 My grandparents lived in Desert Hot Springs. 00:17:57.87\00:18:00.31 And I had found a cave when I was 15 years old 00:18:00.31\00:18:02.74 hitchhiking around the country. 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.25 Found a cave and I thought, 00:18:04.25\00:18:05.31 "I'm gonna go move back up in that cave. 00:18:05.31\00:18:07.42 I'm gonna now find God in nature." 00:18:07.42\00:18:09.62 And so I did that. 00:18:10.59\00:18:11.92 On my way across, I got stuck hitchhiking in Oklahoma. 00:18:13.22\00:18:17.13 Now this is Christmas time and it was freezing cold. 00:18:17.13\00:18:21.66 And I had come from Florida and I wasn't thinking, 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.83 and I've got this thin windbreaker jacket 00:18:23.83\00:18:27.27 and no warm clothes, 00:18:27.27\00:18:28.90 and the weather is below freezing 00:18:28.90\00:18:30.51 and I'm out on the interstate begging for a ride. 00:18:30.51\00:18:33.58 And I thought I was gonna die out there. 00:18:33.58\00:18:34.98 And I spent hours out there and nobody would pick me up. 00:18:34.98\00:18:38.91 I was hungover from drinking and playing pool. 00:18:38.91\00:18:42.48 The day before, 00:18:42.48\00:18:43.62 I'd lost all my money in making silly bets. 00:18:43.62\00:18:47.56 And I became very desperate. 00:18:47.56\00:18:48.79 I was a pretty rotten person. 00:18:48.79\00:18:51.96 I said, "Lord," I prayed. 00:18:51.96\00:18:55.20 I said, "Will you please help me?" 00:18:55.20\00:18:56.00 I didn't even know how to pray, 00:18:56.00\00:18:57.27 I prayed the simple prayer. 00:18:57.27\00:18:58.40 I asked God for four things. 00:18:58.40\00:19:00.50 I said, "Will you please help me get a ride 00:19:00.50\00:19:03.20 to where I'm going?" 00:19:03.20\00:19:04.31 I still had like 1500 miles to go. 00:19:04.31\00:19:06.14 "Will you please help me get some food, I'm hungry." 00:19:07.48\00:19:11.31 I said, "Please help me get some money. I'm broke." 00:19:11.31\00:19:14.28 And I said, "Please give me a ride with someone normal." 00:19:14.28\00:19:17.12 Because hitchhiking, I kept getting 00:19:17.12\00:19:18.82 picked up by crazy people, or they had ulterior motives, 00:19:18.82\00:19:22.22 or they were drunk and nearly scared me half to death. 00:19:22.22\00:19:24.99 As soon as I finished praying, 00:19:25.89\00:19:27.23 the next vehicle stopped and picked me up, 00:19:27.23\00:19:30.07 took me 1500 miles to the door of Palm Springs 00:19:30.07\00:19:33.90 of where I was going. 00:19:33.90\00:19:35.54 Fed me all the way out. I didn't ask him to. 00:19:35.54\00:19:39.04 He gave me $40 when he dropped me off that I didn't ask for. 00:19:39.04\00:19:42.88 I also did not ask for him to preach to me 00:19:42.88\00:19:44.98 all the way from Oklahoma (audience laughing) 00:19:44.98\00:19:46.78 to Palm Springs, California. 00:19:46.78\00:19:49.18 This guy was a born again Christian. 00:19:49.18\00:19:50.59 So when I prayed for a ride, God said, 00:19:50.59\00:19:52.02 "I'm waiting for the right ride, Doug." 00:19:52.02\00:19:54.72 This guy picked me up and he's just very nice. 00:19:54.72\00:19:56.79 Whenever we stopped to eat, he said, 00:19:56.79\00:19:57.99 "Let me buy your food." 00:19:57.99\00:19:59.19 I had to listen to him or jump out of the car. 00:20:00.30\00:20:02.46 And so, you know, I pick up hitchhikers 00:20:03.60\00:20:04.87 and I witness to 'em now. 00:20:04.87\00:20:05.90 I still do that. 00:20:05.90\00:20:07.44 And I find it helps if you wait until you're doing about 65, 00:20:07.44\00:20:10.21 and then you make your gospel presentation. 00:20:10.21\00:20:12.11 (audience laughing) 00:20:12.11\00:20:13.21 And then you turn and look at them 00:20:13.21\00:20:14.41 and then you accelerate and say, 00:20:14.41\00:20:15.51 "Would you like to accept Jesus?" 00:20:15.51\00:20:17.01 (audience laughing) 00:20:17.01\00:20:19.48 No, I do, I still pick up hitchhikers. 00:20:19.48\00:20:20.75 I don't do that, though. 00:20:20.75\00:20:22.02 So this time now I was gonna find God through nature. 00:20:24.82\00:20:27.06 And this is some pictures that my brother 00:20:27.06\00:20:28.79 actually took of when I was... 00:20:28.79\00:20:30.39 I'm 17 years old at this point. 00:20:30.39\00:20:32.69 And I went up to the cave and... 00:20:32.69\00:20:36.03 I found a cave that was, 00:20:37.93\00:20:39.07 it was several thousand feet above Palm Springs. 00:20:39.07\00:20:43.37 And then you go back down in this valley 00:20:43.37\00:20:45.14 and right by the cave there was water. 00:20:45.14\00:20:48.18 The mountain was 11,000 feet. It's Mount San Jacinto. 00:20:48.18\00:20:50.95 There's actually a picture of it. 00:20:50.95\00:20:52.68 I think it's the next picture there. 00:20:52.68\00:20:54.28 So water always came down by the cave. 00:20:54.28\00:20:57.92 And it's a very isolated spot 00:20:57.92\00:20:59.72 even though you're in Southern California. 00:20:59.72\00:21:01.16 And I lived in the cave, I never wore any clothes. 00:21:01.16\00:21:04.43 It was warm. 00:21:04.43\00:21:05.73 And I thought, "I'm gonna find God in nature." 00:21:05.73\00:21:07.66 And I even had a Bible argument, "Adam and Eve were naked. 00:21:07.66\00:21:10.07 This is God's plan." 00:21:10.07\00:21:11.77 Now I went to town, I put clothes on, 00:21:11.77\00:21:13.20 'cause you don't last very long 00:21:13.20\00:21:14.27 walking around like that in town. 00:21:14.27\00:21:15.84 But one time I did go to town and I forgot, 00:21:15.84\00:21:17.91 but that's another story. 00:21:17.91\00:21:19.17 (audience laughing) 00:21:19.17\00:21:20.78 So I would panhandle, I'd play the flute, 00:21:20.78\00:21:23.11 and I'd dig around in the dumpster. 00:21:23.11\00:21:25.31 Now think about this. 00:21:26.41\00:21:27.68 When my grandparents found out and they told my father, 00:21:29.05\00:21:32.05 they said, "Doug is getting his food 00:21:32.05\00:21:34.02 out of the garbage behind the market." 00:21:34.02\00:21:36.62 My father worked so hard so that we would not be poor 00:21:36.62\00:21:39.39 like he was during the Depression. 00:21:39.39\00:21:41.16 His father died when he was seven, 00:21:42.36\00:21:43.93 and he and his brothers had to work so hard 00:21:43.93\00:21:45.83 to fight off poverty, and he thought, 00:21:45.83\00:21:48.10 "I never want my kids to do that." 00:21:48.10\00:21:50.04 They said, "Doug is getting his food 00:21:50.04\00:21:50.87 outta the garbage can." 00:21:50.87\00:21:52.74 How do you think that made him feel? 00:21:52.74\00:21:55.31 That just broke him. 00:21:55.31\00:21:56.28 How do you think your Heavenly Father feels 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.01 when he gives his Son to save you from sin, 00:21:59.01\00:22:01.02 and we go to the devil's dumpster for happiness? 00:22:01.02\00:22:03.62 That breaks his heart. 00:22:05.05\00:22:06.05 It's not gonna satisfy you. 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.56 Well, the miracle that I didn't share with you... 00:22:08.69\00:22:10.53 Oh, by the way, here's a picture. 00:22:10.53\00:22:11.63 I'm in my cave with my cat, Stranger. 00:22:11.63\00:22:14.03 I found one picture where I had my clothes on. 00:22:15.33\00:22:17.27 Thought I'd share that with you. 00:22:17.27\00:22:18.67 (audience laughing) 00:22:18.67\00:22:19.80 The miracle is in my cave, 00:22:19.80\00:22:22.67 somebody had left a Bible in the cave. 00:22:22.67\00:22:24.04 When I moved into the cave, other people had camped there. 00:22:24.04\00:22:26.24 There was soot on the ceiling, 00:22:26.24\00:22:27.54 and there was some old sleeping bags, 00:22:27.54\00:22:29.34 and pots and pans, and a Bible. 00:22:29.34\00:22:31.45 Well, I didn't pay much attention to it, 00:22:32.51\00:22:34.08 but after about six months, 00:22:34.08\00:22:35.15 I thought, "I'm gonna read the Bible 00:22:35.15\00:22:36.35 so I can argue with Christians." 00:22:36.35\00:22:38.82 'Cause I kept meeting these Christians, 00:22:38.82\00:22:39.95 and I thought they were so ignorant. 00:22:39.95\00:22:42.22 I said, "No, you're just... 00:22:42.22\00:22:43.02 I believe in reincarnation." 00:22:43.02\00:22:44.46 And they were just... 00:22:44.46\00:22:46.23 I said, "Bible's been changed. 00:22:46.23\00:22:47.36 You can't believe the Bible. 00:22:47.36\00:22:48.13 It's fables and fairy tales." 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.27 So I said, "I'm gonna read the Bible 00:22:52.73\00:22:54.07 so I can argue with them," 00:22:54.07\00:22:55.57 'cause I felt ignorant. 00:22:55.57\00:22:56.60 They'd say, "Are you born again?" 00:22:56.60\00:22:58.41 I thought, "What do they mean?" 00:22:58.41\00:22:59.21 "Are you washed in the blood?" 00:22:59.21\00:23:00.08 And I thought, "That was gory. 00:23:00.08\00:23:01.51 What are they talking about?" 00:23:01.51\00:23:03.21 So I began to read the Bible, 00:23:03.21\00:23:05.51 and I got bogged down in the Old Testament. 00:23:05.51\00:23:08.48 Someone said, "Doug, you need to go to the New Testament." 00:23:08.48\00:23:11.22 So I went to the New Testament, 00:23:11.22\00:23:12.65 and I read Matthew, Mark. 00:23:12.65\00:23:14.26 I read about Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. 00:23:14.26\00:23:17.26 Every day I'd make banana bread 00:23:17.26\00:23:18.69 from the day-old bananas I got from the market, 00:23:18.69\00:23:21.63 and I'd eat banana bread and I'd read the Bible. 00:23:21.63\00:23:24.10 And I kept saying, "This can't be true. 00:23:25.20\00:23:27.14 No, this can't be true." 00:23:27.14\00:23:28.64 But a voice kept telling me, "This is the truth. 00:23:28.64\00:23:30.54 And just the teachings of Jesus." 00:23:30.54\00:23:32.87 I finally came to the same conclusion as C.S. Lewis. 00:23:32.87\00:23:35.88 He says, "You really, when you encounter Jesus, 00:23:35.88\00:23:38.05 you've only got three options. 00:23:38.05\00:23:39.41 He's either a liar, he's a lunatic, or he's Lord." 00:23:39.41\00:23:44.55 - [Audience Member] Amen. 00:23:45.35\00:23:46.42 - And I said, "Well, he's not crazy, 00:23:46.42\00:23:47.52 'cause he said the most profound things 00:23:47.52\00:23:48.89 I've ever heard. 00:23:48.89\00:23:50.59 He's not a liar because he could've lied to save his life." 00:23:50.59\00:23:53.86 Everything he said resonated with truth. 00:23:53.86\00:23:56.53 "My only option is this man was telling the truth 00:23:56.53\00:24:00.04 that God became a man to save us from our sins." 00:24:00.04\00:24:04.01 And then I knew what that meant 00:24:04.01\00:24:05.14 is that I needed to ask him to save me. 00:24:05.14\00:24:08.58 And while I was only 17, 00:24:09.41\00:24:11.31 I had a pretty good record of sin. 00:24:11.31\00:24:13.08 And so up there in the cave I got on my knees 00:24:14.22\00:24:15.85 and I said, "Lord, I'm a mess. 00:24:15.85\00:24:18.12 But if you would forgive me 00:24:18.12\00:24:20.06 and give me some purpose for living." 00:24:20.06\00:24:21.86 I was a number one first class zero. 00:24:21.86\00:24:24.93 I was running around in the mountains, 00:24:24.93\00:24:26.83 eating out of garbage cans, 00:24:26.83\00:24:27.96 using drugs, drinking, stealing, 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.90 thought I was spiritual, 00:24:29.90\00:24:31.67 long hair and a beard. 00:24:33.00\00:24:34.50 I mean I was just a big zero. 00:24:34.50\00:24:36.44 I said, "Lord, if you give me some purpose for living," 00:24:36.44\00:24:39.91 and he came into my heart and began to transform me, 00:24:39.91\00:24:44.21 and I felt so happy, I felt a peace and a joy 00:24:44.21\00:24:46.88 that now every time someone came by my cave hiking, 00:24:46.88\00:24:49.68 I started giving Bible studies. 00:24:49.68\00:24:51.52 First Bible studies, I had no clothes on. 00:24:51.52\00:24:53.96 (audience chuckling) 00:24:53.96\00:24:55.49 But they didn't have any clothes on either. 00:24:55.49\00:24:57.16 So you know, the Lord meets us where we're at. 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.46 I think, God, he's very patient. 00:25:00.43\00:25:03.03 I was absolutely sincere, 00:25:03.03\00:25:04.50 and I was giving Bible studies to people. 00:25:04.50\00:25:06.50 And then I said, "Lord, maybe you don't want me 00:25:06.50\00:25:07.94 to live in a cave forever." 00:25:07.94\00:25:09.40 I said, "I wanna tell people about you, 00:25:09.40\00:25:11.01 but I don't know how that's gonna happen." 00:25:11.01\00:25:12.41 I said, "I'm in a cave, but I feel this desire to tell." 00:25:12.41\00:25:14.71 I said, "Lord, if you want me 00:25:14.71\00:25:15.88 to tell other people about you, 00:25:15.88\00:25:17.41 you've gotta work this out." 00:25:17.41\00:25:18.98 So a quick story. 00:25:18.98\00:25:20.08 After I prayed that prayer and I said, 00:25:20.08\00:25:21.42 "Lord, if you want me to tell other people about you, 00:25:21.42\00:25:23.85 I dunno how I'm gonna do it, I'm a hermit." 00:25:23.85\00:25:26.39 I go down to town and I call my mother collect. 00:25:26.39\00:25:28.86 I used to check in and she'd say, 00:25:28.86\00:25:30.26 "Just tell me you're alive once every couple weeks." 00:25:30.26\00:25:33.09 So I called mom. 00:25:33.09\00:25:33.90 She said, "I'm glad you called." 00:25:33.90\00:25:35.20 She said, "Are you gonna be at your cave next week?" 00:25:35.20\00:25:37.63 I said, "Yeah." 00:25:37.63\00:25:39.10 She said, "I'm gonna come visit you." 00:25:39.10\00:25:41.30 I said, "What?" I said, "You can't get up there." 00:25:41.30\00:25:42.37 She said, "No, no. 00:25:42.37\00:25:43.44 I'm bringing a film crew with a helicopter. 00:25:43.44\00:25:45.27 They want to interview you. 00:25:46.51\00:25:47.81 They think it's interesting that a millionaire son 00:25:47.81\00:25:49.91 is living in a cave." 00:25:49.91\00:25:52.05 And ABC, I'm sorry, NBC rented a helicopter 00:25:53.11\00:25:57.32 and a film crew. 00:25:57.32\00:25:58.29 They flew me up to the cave. 00:25:58.29\00:26:00.19 This was actually that day in front of the cave. 00:26:00.19\00:26:02.12 They flew mom in with a helicopter. 00:26:02.12\00:26:04.09 This is Bill Applegate. 00:26:04.09\00:26:05.63 It was on national television three times. 00:26:05.63\00:26:07.76 And they said, "Why are you doing this?" 00:26:07.76\00:26:09.20 I was able to share a quick testimony. 00:26:09.20\00:26:11.27 Right after I said, "Lord, if you want me to tell anyone, 00:26:12.63\00:26:14.44 I don't know how I'm gonna tell anyone. 00:26:14.44\00:26:15.60 I live ina cave," 00:26:15.60\00:26:16.40 he sends a film crew to my cave. 00:26:16.40\00:26:19.44 (audience laughing) 00:26:19.44\00:26:21.54 That's when I started thinking, 00:26:21.54\00:26:23.14 "Maybe he will give me an opportunity to tell other 00:26:23.14\00:26:25.71 people." - [Announcer] Don't forget to request today's 00:26:30.09\00:26:31.65 life changing free resource. 00:26:31.65\00:26:33.69 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, 00:26:33.69\00:26:35.82 you can download a digital copy 00:26:35.82\00:26:37.09 straight to your computer or mobile device. 00:26:37.09\00:26:39.73 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, 00:26:39.73\00:26:42.43 simply text the keyword on your screen to 40544, 00:26:42.43\00:26:46.53 or visit the web address shown on your screen, 00:26:46.53\00:26:49.30 and be sure to select the digital download option 00:26:49.30\00:26:51.74 on the request page. 00:26:51.74\00:26:53.11 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word 00:26:53.11\00:26:56.24 with Amazing Facts, wherever and whenever you want, 00:26:56.24\00:26:59.38 and most important, to share it with others. 00:26:59.38\00:27:02.28 Have you always wanted to be a Bible expert, 00:27:03.82\00:27:06.42 but never knew where to start? 00:27:06.42\00:27:08.46 Are you searching for answers 00:27:08.46\00:27:09.82 that will bring you joy, peace and fulfillment? 00:27:09.82\00:27:13.03 Then you'll love the Amazing Facts 00:27:13.03\00:27:15.10 "Storacles of Prophecy" Bible study experience, 00:27:15.10\00:27:18.37 now available in 18 languages. 00:27:18.37\00:27:20.70 Featuring 24 easy-to-read lessons, 00:27:20.70\00:27:23.41 the Storacles are packed with scripture 00:27:23.41\00:27:25.71 and step-by-step guidance that will give you 00:27:25.71\00:27:28.38 absolute confidence about what the Bible actually says 00:27:28.38\00:27:31.58 about the Second Coming, the Rapture, 00:27:31.58\00:27:33.82 the antichrist, and the mark of the beast. 00:27:33.82\00:27:36.62 You'll also get the truth about hell and the afterlife, 00:27:36.62\00:27:39.75 and practical insight about grace, salvation, 00:27:39.75\00:27:42.86 and how to truly live like Jesus. 00:27:42.86\00:27:45.99 Even better, it's absolutely free at storacles.com. 00:27:45.99\00:27:50.60 So don't miss out. 00:27:50.60\00:27:51.93 Get started on your Bible Study adventure today 00:27:51.93\00:27:55.07 at storacles.com. 00:27:55.07\00:27:57.27 (bright music) 00:27:59.87\00:28:02.54 Don't forget to request today's free offer. 00:28:03.61\00:28:05.35 It's sure to be a blessing. 00:28:05.35\00:28:07.15 And thank you for your continued support 00:28:07.15\00:28:09.22 as we take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.49 We hope you'll join us next week 00:28:12.49\00:28:14.26 as we delve deep into the Word of God 00:28:14.26\00:28:16.66 to explore more Amazing Facts. 00:28:16.66\00:28:19.19 This presentation was brought to you 00:28:22.33\00:28:23.77 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:28:23.77\00:28:26.70
