- [Narrator #1] This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.23\00:00:03.67 by the Friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.70\00:00:07.70 - Did you know, most baby mammals, 00:00:09.74\00:00:11.47 birds, and even some fish instinctively identify 00:00:11.51\00:00:15.11 and bond with their parents 00:00:15.14\00:00:16.88 in the very early stages of their lives? 00:00:16.91\00:00:19.31 But if the parents aren't available, 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.18 well, some strange things can happen. 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.82 In the 1930s, Austrian zoologist 00:00:23.85\00:00:26.52 Konrad Lorenz conducted some of the first experiments 00:00:26.55\00:00:30.26 on the imprinting of precocial birds, 00:00:30.29\00:00:33.26 those that leave the nest soon after hatching. 00:00:33.29\00:00:36.23 When he presented himself to a newly hatched group 00:00:36.26\00:00:38.97 of mallard ducklings and he quacked softly to them, 00:00:39.00\00:00:42.30 they recognized him as their mother, 00:00:42.34\00:00:45.67 and consequently followed him everywhere. 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.24 Cross species imprinting has been observed many times, 00:00:47.28\00:00:51.01 even among some species that are naturally enemies, 00:00:51.05\00:00:54.18 like cats and squirrels, or lions and antelope. 00:00:54.22\00:00:57.35 Did you know that in a spiritual sense, 00:00:57.39\00:00:59.55 we humans can also be imprinted? 00:00:59.59\00:01:02.26 We tend to become like what we look at, 00:01:02.29\00:01:05.59 and that's why it's so important 00:01:05.63\00:01:07.03 that we fix our eyes on Jesus. 00:01:07.10\00:01:09.76 So join me today as we explore the Bible facts 00:01:09.80\00:01:13.23 about how we can be imprinted by our Heavenly Father 00:01:13.27\00:01:16.84 and have a life-changing experience with Jesus. 00:01:16.87\00:01:20.34 (gentle instrumental music) 00:01:20.38\00:01:23.58 We've come to learn that prophecy in the Bible is more 00:01:23.61\00:01:26.45 than just the books of Zachariah, and Daniel, 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.68 and Revelation, or Ezekiel. 00:01:29.72\00:01:32.49 Prophecy encompasses the message of the prophets 00:01:32.52\00:01:36.06 and the message of the prophets can be found 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.59 all through the Bible, a number of books. 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.13 Our study tonight is dealing 00:01:41.16\00:01:42.80 with the subject of the king's ambassador. 00:01:42.83\00:01:46.63 And I really could say the king's ambassador 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.64 is because he's calling all of us to be ambassadors for him. 00:01:48.67\00:01:53.21 We're thinking more particularly of someone 00:01:53.24\00:01:56.18 who was called by Jesus the greatest of the prophets. 00:01:56.21\00:02:00.25 You know who that is? John the Baptist. 00:02:00.28\00:02:03.28 He said, "Among those born among women 00:02:03.32\00:02:04.89 there is no prophet like John the Baptist." 00:02:04.92\00:02:08.62 You know if you look in Matthew, 00:02:08.66\00:02:11.29 you can read here in Matthew 3, 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.86 it tells us about John the Baptist. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.66 I'm going to read the first few verses for you. 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.83 "In those days John the Baptist came preaching 00:02:17.87\00:02:20.80 in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.81 repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:02:23.84\00:02:27.28 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah 00:02:27.31\00:02:30.28 saying, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:02:30.31\00:02:34.38 prepare the way of the Lord, make his path straight." 00:02:34.42\00:02:39.49 Now often when kings traveled in Bible times, 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.09 they had a team that would go before 'em. 00:02:42.12\00:02:47.00 A very powerful, wealthy king would have a big team. 00:02:47.03\00:02:50.37 And when the king was traveling they would inspect the road, 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.17 not only for spies and booby traps, 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.87 but they would prepare the road. 00:02:55.90\00:02:57.21 They would take the rocks out of the road. 00:02:57.24\00:02:58.87 If there were low spots and potholes, they'd fill them in. 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.34 If there were high spots, they'd cut them down, 00:03:01.38\00:03:04.31 and they'd smooth the path. 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.01 And the Bible tells us in Isaiah 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.58 that this was the work of this messenger. 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.72 He was going to cut down the high places 00:03:10.75\00:03:13.09 and fill in the low places. 00:03:13.12\00:03:15.29 And someone said, you know, that's sort of the work of a 00:03:15.32\00:03:19.23 pastor, is that he is supposed to comfort those 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.66 who are humbling themselves, that are unhappy, 00:03:21.70\00:03:24.43 that are struggling, 00:03:24.47\00:03:26.40 and he's supposed to take those that are too comfortable 00:03:26.43\00:03:28.24 and make them uncomfortable. 00:03:28.27\00:03:30.54 And so John the Baptist went out 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.11 and he would prepare the way of the Lord. 00:03:32.14\00:03:34.71 Now John himself tells us that he lived 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.55 a very holy austere life. 00:03:37.58\00:03:40.08 "John himself was clothed in camel's hair 00:03:40.12\00:03:44.35 with a leather belt around his waist. 00:03:44.39\00:03:46.22 His food was locusts and wild honey." 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.56 And we're all hoping that was carob pod. 00:03:47.59\00:03:50.93 And "Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.90 and all the region around Jordan, they went out to him." 00:03:53.93\00:03:57.57 Here's this man that some would probably ascribe 00:03:57.60\00:04:00.30 to be a maniac out there in the wilderness by 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.34 the Jordan River, he's preaching that the Lord is coming, 00:04:02.37\00:04:05.54 that they needed a repent of their sins, 00:04:05.57\00:04:07.08 they needed to turn back to God. 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.24 And the people were so moved by the Holy Spirit 00:04:09.28\00:04:11.21 that not one or two came, but it seems like everybody 00:04:11.25\00:04:14.22 came out to hear this man preaching 00:04:14.25\00:04:15.85 with eloquence and power. 00:04:15.88\00:04:17.62 He didn't talk like a madman, 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.22 he had great courage and great force to his speech. 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.82 "And they were baptizing them in Jordan, 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.46 confessing their sins." 00:04:25.49\00:04:27.60 And so there was this great revival that was caused 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.00 by the preaching of John, 00:04:30.03\00:04:31.33 and he was giving specific information 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.64 about how to repent and how to live holy lives to everybody. 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.37 Even the soldiers came to him 00:04:36.40\00:04:37.71 and they said, what shall we do? 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.11 And he said, do violence to no man. 00:04:40.14\00:04:43.45 And what he meant by that, he didn't say you couldn't be a 00:04:43.48\00:04:45.31 soldier, he meant, sometimes they would rough people up 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.12 and take their property. 00:04:47.15\00:04:49.45 But he was telling everybody 00:04:49.48\00:04:51.35 what they needed to do to follow God. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.25 Now I'm going to have you jump with me to Revelation. 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.72 This is a message that goes to the world 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.46 just before Jesus comes. 00:04:57.49\00:04:59.03 We talked about the 144,000. 00:04:59.06\00:05:01.90 This is a group that has the seal of God 00:05:01.93\00:05:05.37 and we know they're preparing others who receive that seal. 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.24 "Then I looked, and behold, 00:05:08.27\00:05:09.74 a lamb standing," Revelation 14:1, 00:05:09.77\00:05:12.61 "On Mount Zion, and with him 144,000, 00:05:12.64\00:05:16.28 having his Father's name written on their foreheads. 00:05:16.31\00:05:20.45 And I heard a voice like the voice of many waters 00:05:20.48\00:05:22.82 and the voice of a loud thunder. 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.52 And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps, 00:05:24.55\00:05:27.86 and they sang as it was a new song before the throne 00:05:27.89\00:05:30.13 and before the four living creatures and the elders. 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.43 And no one could learn that song except the 144,000 00:05:32.46\00:05:35.76 who were redeemed from the earth." 00:05:35.80\00:05:37.40 But listen how it describes them. 00:05:37.43\00:05:39.13 "These are the ones who are not defiled with women, 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.27 for they are virgins." 00:05:42.30\00:05:44.61 What does that mean? 00:05:44.64\00:05:46.14 I've heard some people preach that and say in the last days, 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.14 all people saved need to practice virginity. 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.81 Now, you read in Revelation, 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.65 that's telling us that you get two women. 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.75 One of them is a mother of harlots, the other one is pure. 00:05:54.78\00:05:58.62 And it's saying they are not defiled with women, 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.56 talking about Babylon and her daughters, 00:06:01.59\00:06:03.26 they're not defiled with the false teachings 00:06:03.29\00:06:05.63 for they are pure. 00:06:05.66\00:06:07.13 That's what it's dealing with there. 00:06:07.13\00:06:08.73 It says, "They follow the lamb wherever he goes." 00:06:08.76\00:06:11.17 How many of you want to follow the lamb in heaven? 00:06:11.20\00:06:14.97 Do you know, if you want to follow him there then, 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.60 you need to follow him here now first. 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.64 "They follow the lamb wherever he goes. 00:06:19.67\00:06:22.94 These were redeemed from among men, 00:06:22.98\00:06:24.78 being the first fruits to God and the lamb." 00:06:24.81\00:06:27.18 They're not the only ones, 00:06:27.22\00:06:28.55 but it's a special group in the last days. 00:06:28.58\00:06:30.75 "And in their mouth was found no guile", 00:06:30.79\00:06:33.02 no deceit, "For they're without fault 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.36 before the throne of God." 00:06:35.39\00:06:36.89 So I think you're getting the message that John the Baptist, 00:06:36.93\00:06:39.39 who came in the spirit and power of Elijah, 00:06:39.43\00:06:41.70 the 144,000, and people that are preparing 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.73 for Christ's first coming or second coming, 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.90 he's calling them to lives of dedication and holiness. 00:06:46.94\00:06:51.44 You know, we're living in a day and an age 00:06:51.47\00:06:53.31 where it's really hard to tell Christians from apart 00:06:53.34\00:06:57.28 from everyone else in the world. 00:06:57.31\00:07:01.35 And I believe that people should know there's a difference 00:07:01.38\00:07:02.68 in the way that we conduct ourselves. 00:07:02.72\00:07:04.55 I was in a restaurant with a friend, 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.49 and the young lady that was serving our table, 00:07:06.52\00:07:09.46 as she walked away, I said to my friend, 00:07:09.49\00:07:12.03 she's a Christian. 00:07:12.06\00:07:13.96 He said, how do you know? I don't know, just her smile. 00:07:14.00\00:07:17.33 There's something about her appearance, 00:07:17.37\00:07:19.03 there's a simplicity, there's a peace. 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.87 She came back to the table, I said, now, I don't want to 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.81 embarrass you, but are you a Christian? 00:07:23.84\00:07:26.21 And she blushed a little bit and she said, well, yes I am, 00:07:26.24\00:07:28.78 I go to church, and she was clearly from her answer, 00:07:28.81\00:07:32.08 a practicing Christian. 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.42 And I don't know about you, 00:07:33.45\00:07:34.75 but I've been able to spot that before. 00:07:34.78\00:07:36.42 I think that you can sometimes see a difference. 00:07:36.45\00:07:39.15 People have this inner joy, they've got this competence, 00:07:39.19\00:07:41.56 they've got this peace. 00:07:41.59\00:07:43.12 And it's almost like, you know, once you are a Christian, 00:07:43.16\00:07:45.66 you've got this Holy Spirit radar 00:07:45.69\00:07:47.46 where you can spot each other. 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.33 But it shouldn't just be with Christians, 00:07:49.36\00:07:51.87 I think the world ought to see that there's a difference. 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.04 We're going to find out what the Bible says. 00:07:54.07\00:07:55.47 Was there something different about John the Baptist? 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.74 Clearly there was. 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.28 What was one secret 00:08:00.31\00:08:01.98 to John the Baptist's Spirit filled life? 00:08:02.01\00:08:05.58 If you look in Luke 3:16, "John answered and said, 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.95 I baptize you with water, but one mightier than I is coming 00:08:09.98\00:08:14.19 whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose." 00:08:14.22\00:08:17.56 And of course here he's talking about Jesus. 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.16 One secret of his life was you notice that he's self-defacing, 00:08:20.20\00:08:23.10 there is a humility there in his life. 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.60 One of the keys for Christian 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.00 is there's going to be humility. 00:08:28.04\00:08:31.54 I think it was a C.S. Lewis that wrote in his book, 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.68 "Mere Christianity", a chapter called the great sin. 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.98 And he talks about the devil, the great sin of Lucifer 00:08:37.01\00:08:40.28 was putting himself in the position of God. 00:08:40.32\00:08:43.32 And pride is the mother of all sins. 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.09 Pride is a handle that fits every other sin. 00:08:46.12\00:08:49.32 And John the Baptist had humility, 00:08:49.36\00:08:51.26 even though he was brave, and he was bold, 00:08:51.29\00:08:53.13 and audacious for God. 00:08:53.16\00:08:54.86 He also said in John 3:30, he said, 00:08:54.93\00:08:58.00 "He", speaking of Jesus, 00:08:58.03\00:08:59.33 "He must increase, but I must decrease." 00:08:59.37\00:09:03.10 As John introduced Jesus and he said, 00:09:03.14\00:09:05.41 this is the Lamb of God. 00:09:05.44\00:09:06.84 People began to follow Jesus 00:09:06.88\00:09:08.31 and soon Jesus had more disciples than John. 00:09:08.34\00:09:10.31 And John's disciples began to resent that, 00:09:10.35\00:09:13.35 you know, there's a spirit of competition. 00:09:13.38\00:09:14.88 Hey, you know, 00:09:14.92\00:09:16.35 he's getting more disciples than you, and what's with that? 00:09:16.38\00:09:17.95 You know, you're the great prophet. 00:09:17.99\00:09:19.29 And John said, well, this is the way it's supposed to be. 00:09:19.32\00:09:21.99 He must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:22.02\00:09:25.39 You know, that's something that all of us 00:09:25.43\00:09:26.90 should really be saying in our hearts every day. 00:09:26.93\00:09:30.83 When it comes to who is on the throne in your life, 00:09:30.87\00:09:33.10 he must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:33.13\00:09:37.57 Would you like to say that with me? 00:09:37.61\00:09:39.71 - [Together] He must increase, but I must decrease. 00:09:39.74\00:09:43.71 - And every day that you walk with Jesus, 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.51 you're going to find out that it's more and more about him, 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.22 and that's where your joy comes from. 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.02 Christ said, he that seeks to save his life will lose it, 00:09:50.05\00:09:53.05 but he's willing to lose his life for my sake, 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.92 he will find it. 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.53 We take up our cross, we lose our lives, that's when we 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.13 really find our lives, when we give it all to him. 00:10:00.16\00:10:03.50 Number two, did John the Baptist read the scriptures? 00:10:03.53\00:10:07.54 This is another example in the life of John that I think 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.87 that every believer should emulate, did he? 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.51 How do we know? 00:10:12.54\00:10:13.84 When they said, John, who are you? 00:10:13.88\00:10:15.21 This is Gospel John 1:23. 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.68 "He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make 00:10:18.71\00:10:22.92 straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said." 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.62 Does it become clear that John read 00:10:25.65\00:10:27.72 what the prophet Isaiah said? 00:10:27.76\00:10:29.62 So just because he's living out there in the wilderness 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.09 in the desert doesn't mean he did not read the scriptures. 00:10:32.13\00:10:35.03 In fact, if you go visit Israel, 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.23 you'll find that there was a whole group 00:10:37.27\00:10:38.80 of very dedicated Jews called Essenes 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.90 that lived in the Dead Sea area, 00:10:41.94\00:10:43.84 and their whole job was writing out 00:10:43.87\00:10:45.74 and copying the scriptures. 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.84 Later when the Romans were coming to invade, 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.74 they hid a lot of them in caves. 00:10:49.78\00:10:51.28 They were discovered then as the Dead Sea Scrolls. 00:10:51.31\00:10:53.42 So there was a whole community of people that were dedicated 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.82 to the scriptures, 00:10:55.85\00:10:57.32 living just down the river from John the Baptist. 00:10:57.35\00:10:59.49 He knew his Bible, he read his Bible, 00:10:59.52\00:11:01.79 he prayed. 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.66 There are three disciplines in the Christian life 00:11:03.69\00:11:06.73 that are the keys to your success. 00:11:06.76\00:11:09.13 Now, what I'm about to say is so simple, 00:11:09.16\00:11:11.87 but it is so true. 00:11:11.90\00:11:14.04 You do these things and you will not backslide. 00:11:14.07\00:11:18.87 Read your Bible every day, 00:11:18.91\00:11:21.31 and even if you read your Bible just 15 minutes, 00:11:21.34\00:11:23.41 read your Bible 15 minutes, pray for 15 minutes, 00:11:23.45\00:11:28.08 and it might be seven minutes in the morning 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.99 and seven minutes at night, 00:11:31.02\00:11:32.85 and spend 15 minutes talking to someone else about God. 00:11:32.89\00:11:38.06 Read the Bible, talk to the Lord, 00:11:38.09\00:11:41.36 share your faith. 00:11:41.40\00:11:43.57 Number three, was John the Baptist willing 00:11:43.60\00:11:46.27 to witness for Jesus? 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.90 When he saw Jesus come to the water, he boldly said, 00:11:48.94\00:11:53.07 "Next day", John 1:29, 00:11:53.11\00:11:55.58 "Behold, the Lamb of God, 00:11:55.61\00:11:58.35 that takes away the sin of the world." 00:11:58.38\00:12:00.68 He pointed people to Christ. 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.18 If you believe in Christ, do not be ashamed of your faith. 00:12:02.22\00:12:05.19 Be bold in your faith. 00:12:05.22\00:12:06.59 John was so bold and he was so courageous 00:12:06.62\00:12:10.19 that he would not only rebuke the Pharisees for their sins, 00:12:10.23\00:12:14.10 he talked to the Roman soldiers, 00:12:14.13\00:12:15.73 he told king Herod that you shouldn't be living 00:12:15.76\00:12:18.77 with your brother's wife. 00:12:18.80\00:12:21.80 I mean, he called sin out wherever he saw it, 00:12:21.84\00:12:24.11 and he was not very popular, 00:12:24.14\00:12:25.51 it ultimately cost him his life. 00:12:25.54\00:12:29.18 Now the reason we're talking 00:12:29.21\00:12:30.51 about this message of the king's ambassadors. 00:12:30.55\00:12:32.25 The Bible tells us, last prophecy in the Old Testament, 00:12:32.28\00:12:35.62 Malachi 4, "Behold", 00:12:35.65\00:12:37.65 well, first he says, this is Malachi 4:4, 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.26 "Remember the law of Moses, my servant, which I gave 00:12:40.29\00:12:42.49 unto him for all Israel with its statutes and judgements. 00:12:42.52\00:12:46.19 Behold I send you Elijah the prophet 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.46 before the great and terrible day of the Lord." 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.13 Now the great and terrible day of the Lord 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.93 was not Jesus's first coming. 00:12:51.97\00:12:53.67 That's the day of the Lord when he comes the second time. 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.47 "I will send you Elijah the prophet 00:12:56.50\00:12:58.21 before the great and terrible day of the Lord. 00:12:58.24\00:13:00.31 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, 00:13:00.34\00:13:01.91 and the hearts of the children to the fathers, 00:13:01.94\00:13:04.78 lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." 00:13:04.81\00:13:06.25 Now this is not just talking 00:13:06.28\00:13:07.58 about there being family reconciliation. 00:13:07.62\00:13:11.15 The fathers is talking about the teachings of the fathers. 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.82 A lot of the young generation have rejected 00:13:13.86\00:13:16.52 the teachings of the fathers, but before Christ comes back, 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.79 there's going to be people turning back 00:13:19.83\00:13:21.60 to the sensible teachings of the fathers, 00:13:21.63\00:13:24.17 and the fathers will begin to make sense to the children, 00:13:24.20\00:13:27.60 and there's going to be a revival as a result of that. 00:13:27.64\00:13:31.41 Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:13:31.44\00:13:32.74 In just a moment, 00:13:32.77\00:13:34.08 we'll continue with the rest of today's presentation. 00:13:34.11\00:13:37.71 Have you ever thought that life sometimes seems 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.61 to be a relentless battle just to stay ahead? 00:13:39.65\00:13:43.42 You wash the car, and then it rains, 00:13:43.45\00:13:45.65 you have to wash it again. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.39 You weed the garden, and two weeks later 00:13:47.42\00:13:50.09 there's a whole new crop of weeds. 00:13:50.13\00:13:52.66 Well, it's the same way in a Christian's life. 00:13:52.69\00:13:55.46 Sometimes it seems like when you successfully resist 00:13:55.50\00:13:58.40 one temptation, then another one surprises you 00:13:58.43\00:14:01.37 from left field. 00:14:01.40\00:14:03.20 So you might be wondering, 00:14:03.24\00:14:04.97 how do you stay ahead in the battle with temptation? 00:14:55.62\00:14:59.26 Well, when they came to John the Baptist and they said, 00:14:59.29\00:15:01.73 are you Elijah who is to come? 00:15:01.76\00:15:03.83 John the Baptist said, no. 00:15:03.87\00:15:05.87 Why did John say, no, I'm not Elijah. 00:15:05.90\00:15:07.94 And Jesus said, yes, he is. 00:15:07.97\00:15:10.27 When the Jews were asking John, are you Elijah, 00:15:10.31\00:15:12.61 they were wondering, are you Elijah reincarnated? 00:15:12.64\00:15:15.01 God does not teach reincarnation. 00:15:15.04\00:15:16.48 He said no. 00:15:16.51\00:15:17.81 They were asking a different question, 00:15:17.85\00:15:19.15 you see what I'm saying? 00:15:19.18\00:15:20.48 Jesus said, is he coming in the spirit and power of Elijah? 00:15:20.52\00:15:23.52 Yes, he did come in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:15:23.55\00:15:26.39 That's what the angel told his father, 00:15:26.42\00:15:28.06 that he would come in the spirit and the power of Elijah, 00:15:28.09\00:15:30.79 just like Elisha got the spirit and the power of Elijah. 00:15:30.83\00:15:34.63 But Jesus said, if you can bear it, 00:15:34.66\00:15:37.43 Elijah has come. 00:15:37.47\00:15:39.27 This is after John was put in prison and beheaded, 00:15:39.30\00:15:41.70 and they did unto him whatever they wanted, 00:15:41.74\00:15:43.61 and Elijah will come. 00:15:43.64\00:15:46.47 Christ was looking down to the end of time 00:15:46.51\00:15:49.34 when there's going to be a great revival movement 00:15:49.38\00:15:51.61 and people are going to return to the word of God 00:15:51.65\00:15:54.28 the way that John the Baptist brought a revival movement. 00:15:54.32\00:15:56.95 There are going to be some last day Elijahs 00:15:56.99\00:15:59.32 before Jesus comes back 00:15:59.35\00:16:00.82 that are going to be sharing this message of holiness 00:16:00.86\00:16:03.99 and living godly lives. 00:16:04.03\00:16:05.93 Number four, was the straight preaching 00:16:05.96\00:16:09.06 of John popular among the political and religious leaders? 00:16:09.10\00:16:13.97 No, and Bible tells us the Pharisees 00:16:14.00\00:16:17.34 and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, 00:16:17.37\00:16:21.98 not having been baptized by him. 00:16:22.01\00:16:24.58 It kind of makes you shudder to think, you know, 00:16:24.61\00:16:26.45 here God was calling them to repent of their sins. 00:16:26.48\00:16:28.52 They could keep their jobs, 00:16:28.55\00:16:29.85 but they needed to repent and be washed, 00:16:29.88\00:16:31.49 and baptism was part of that. 00:16:31.52\00:16:33.05 When they were rejected that, 00:16:33.09\00:16:34.79 they were rejecting the counsel 00:16:34.82\00:16:37.86 and the will of God for themselves. 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.23 And there are some of you who are listening 00:16:39.26\00:16:40.63 to the sound of my voice, you could be here, 00:16:40.66\00:16:42.33 you could be listening through 00:16:42.36\00:16:44.77 some electronic media right now, and maybe he's calling you, 00:16:44.80\00:16:48.60 if you've not given your heart to Jesus, 00:16:48.64\00:16:50.14 to repent of your sins, to be baptized and to follow him. 00:16:50.17\00:16:54.14 Listen, today if you hear his voice, 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.11 do not harden your heart, you want to follow that. 00:16:56.14\00:16:58.88 And repent of your sins, he'll give you a revival. 00:16:58.91\00:17:01.88 And then you read on the Luke 3:19, 00:17:01.92\00:17:04.79 "But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him", 00:17:04.82\00:17:07.96 by John the Baptist, 00:17:07.99\00:17:09.29 "For all of his evils that Herod had done, 00:17:09.32\00:17:11.26 he shut up John in prison." 00:17:11.29\00:17:13.60 Later, because of the intrigue of his illicit wife, 00:17:13.63\00:17:19.50 Herodias, John the Baptist was beheaded. 00:17:19.53\00:17:22.70 And Jesus said, here he is the greatest of the prophets, 00:17:22.74\00:17:24.77 but he did not go to heaven in a fiery chariot. 00:17:24.81\00:17:27.68 You know, Jesus said, if 00:17:27.71\00:17:29.38 you're persecuted for Christ's sake, you should rejoice. 00:17:29.41\00:17:31.88 John actually had the privilege of dying 00:17:31.91\00:17:34.55 for the sake of Christ and for the sake of the truth, 00:17:34.58\00:17:37.22 and he's going to be greatly exalted in the kingdom. 00:17:37.25\00:17:39.49 Do you believe that? 00:17:39.52\00:17:41.62 Was there a connection between John's spiritual life 00:17:41.66\00:17:44.49 and his simple diet? 00:17:44.53\00:17:47.03 You can read in Luke 1:15, "For he", 00:17:47.03\00:17:53.10 John the Baptist, "Shall drink neither wine 00:17:53.13\00:17:55.10 nor strong drink, but he will be filled 00:17:55.14\00:17:58.04 with the Holy Spirit." 00:17:58.07\00:18:00.08 You see there's a distinction between being filled with wine 00:18:00.11\00:18:03.88 and being filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:18:03.91\00:18:06.18 You've probably driven down the street 00:18:06.21\00:18:07.58 and you've seen these stores, 00:18:07.62\00:18:08.92 it says liquor, beer, and spirits. 00:18:08.95\00:18:13.66 What do they mean, spirits? What kind of spirits? 00:18:13.69\00:18:17.06 If you drink the liquor, and the beer, 00:18:17.09\00:18:18.56 and the wine, you get spirits that come with it. 00:18:18.59\00:18:23.16 Have you noticed that before? 00:18:23.20\00:18:25.10 Yeah, and you know I'm speaking from firsthand experience, 00:18:25.13\00:18:28.34 friends, I used to drink, I know what happens. 00:18:28.37\00:18:30.94 Says, you'll say things that you regret, 00:18:30.97\00:18:33.91 your eyes will behold strange women. 00:18:33.94\00:18:36.95 I don't know how many people have said, you know,, 00:18:36.98\00:18:39.25 I was at a party, and I had one too many, 00:18:39.28\00:18:41.28 I'm so sorry, I violated our marriage, 00:18:41.32\00:18:43.32 I wasn't thinking, it wasn't me, it was the alcohol. 00:18:43.35\00:18:46.29 Well, you chose to drink the alcohol. 00:18:46.32\00:18:49.69 And people do, and utter, 00:18:49.72\00:18:51.66 and behave in ways that, you know, 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.96 it just takes you away from being spirit led. 00:18:54.00\00:18:57.63 John the Baptist would not drink wine or strong drink, why? 00:18:57.67\00:19:01.77 Because he wanted to be filled with a Holy Spirit. 00:19:01.80\00:19:03.54 So which spirit do you want to be filled with? 00:19:03.57\00:19:05.97 You want to be filled with the spirit of vodka, 00:19:06.01\00:19:07.78 and whiskey, and gin, wine and beer, 00:19:07.81\00:19:12.01 or do you want to be filled with the spirit of Jesus? 00:19:12.05\00:19:15.92 Why is God concerned about what we eat and what we drink? 00:19:15.95\00:19:19.79 Judges 13:7, so the angel meets with Manoah and his wife, 00:19:19.82\00:19:24.23 and he gives clear instructions on this child 00:19:24.26\00:19:27.23 they're going to have 00:19:27.30\00:19:28.56 that's going to be filled with the spirit of God. 00:19:28.60\00:19:30.77 Why would it matter what a mother 00:19:30.80\00:19:32.20 before the child is born eats and drinks? 00:19:32.23\00:19:36.54 Well you know, now they know that the mother's care 00:19:36.57\00:19:39.87 for her body while she's pregnant 00:19:39.91\00:19:41.78 does have an impact on the child. 00:19:41.81\00:19:44.91 "Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son." 00:19:44.95\00:19:47.78 "Now drink no wine or similar," in the word there, 00:19:47.82\00:19:50.79 strong drink, "Or eat anything unclean 00:19:50.82\00:19:54.39 for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from his womb 00:19:54.42\00:19:57.93 to the day of his death." 00:19:57.96\00:19:59.46 Through his whole life he was to be dedicated to God. 00:19:59.49\00:20:02.23 Now, as we near the last days, 00:20:02.26\00:20:03.97 if we're wanting our minds to be clear, 00:20:04.00\00:20:05.77 especially when Satan has come down with great wrath 00:20:05.80\00:20:08.14 and the world is just filled 00:20:08.17\00:20:09.50 with his proliferation of deceptions, 00:20:09.54\00:20:12.71 why would we want our brains to be fuzzy 00:20:12.74\00:20:15.04 so that we can't distinguish between what's right and wrong? 00:20:15.08\00:20:17.81 Why would we want to weaken our perceptions 00:20:17.85\00:20:20.42 so that we are not able to discern 00:20:20.45\00:20:22.45 what is good and what is evil? 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.15 The real prayer of Solomon, when God said, 00:20:24.19\00:20:26.29 what do you want from me? 00:20:26.32\00:20:27.62 He said, I want wisdom, 00:20:27.66\00:20:29.09 that I might have an understanding heart 00:20:29.12\00:20:30.76 to know the difference between good and evil. 00:20:30.79\00:20:33.93 What does the Bible say about worldly behavior? 00:20:33.96\00:20:36.97 James 4:4, "Whoever therefore wants 00:20:37.00\00:20:39.80 to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." 00:20:39.83\00:20:44.04 Now, Pastor Doug, 00:20:44.07\00:20:45.47 I thought the Bible said God so loved the world. 00:20:45.51\00:20:47.51 Here it says you're supposed to love the world, 00:20:47.54\00:20:49.08 and then the Bible says, friendship with the world 00:20:49.11\00:20:51.45 is enmity with God. 00:20:51.48\00:20:52.78 Which is it, love the world or hate the world? 00:20:52.81\00:20:54.48 Well, God loves the people in the world, 00:20:54.52\00:20:56.25 and we should love the people in the world, 00:20:56.28\00:20:57.92 but worldliness is what he's saying that we should shun. 00:20:57.95\00:21:02.32 And I think we all know what that means. 00:21:02.36\00:21:04.49 Just all the distractions with the here and now. 00:21:04.53\00:21:06.66 If you're a Christian, you're thinking about eternity, 00:21:06.70\00:21:08.80 you're thinking about another world, 00:21:08.83\00:21:10.13 you're passing through this world. 00:21:10.17\00:21:12.03 Someone once said that a Christian 00:21:12.07\00:21:14.07 is something like a ship in the water. 00:21:14.10\00:21:17.94 A Christian has to learn how to be in the world 00:21:17.97\00:21:19.81 without the world being in us. 00:21:19.84\00:21:22.81 A ship belongs in the water, 00:21:22.84\00:21:24.65 but as soon as the water gets in the ship, 00:21:24.68\00:21:26.11 you've got serious problems, right? 00:21:26.15\00:21:29.48 "Come out from among them", the Bible says, 00:21:29.52\00:21:31.62 2 Corinthians 6:17, "Be separate, 00:21:31.65\00:21:34.19 says the Lord, do not touch what is unclean." 00:21:34.22\00:21:36.86 This is the New Testament, 00:21:36.89\00:21:38.19 it's not some Old Testament Levitical law. 00:21:38.23\00:21:40.26 He says, "Do not touch what is unclean 00:21:40.30\00:21:42.40 and I will receive you." 00:21:42.43\00:21:43.73 Come out, be separate, we're to be different from the world. 00:21:43.77\00:21:46.20 We're calling people to a high 00:21:46.23\00:21:47.54 and a holy standard of following Jesus. 00:21:47.57\00:21:49.47 How can we tell them to do that 00:21:49.50\00:21:51.04 when we're living like everybody else 00:21:51.07\00:21:52.37 and nobody can tell the difference? 00:21:52.41\00:21:55.48 If anyone loves the world, Bible says, 00:21:55.51\00:21:58.01 1 John 2, "Love not the world, 00:21:58.05\00:22:00.52 neither the things that are in the world, 00:22:00.55\00:22:02.05 for if any man loves the world, 00:22:02.08\00:22:03.42 the love of the Father is not in him. 00:22:03.45\00:22:05.65 For all that's in the world, the lust of the flesh, 00:22:05.69\00:22:07.79 and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life 00:22:07.82\00:22:10.19 is not of the Father, but the world. 00:22:10.23\00:22:12.03 And the world is passing away with the lust thereof. 00:22:12.06\00:22:14.83 But he that does the will of God will abide forever." 00:22:14.83\00:22:18.07 Can you say amen? 00:22:18.10\00:22:19.73 If you love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 00:22:19.77\00:22:23.37 "Do not be conformed to this world, 00:22:23.41\00:22:25.87 but rather be transformed by the renewing of your mind, 00:22:25.91\00:22:29.78 that you might prove what is that good, and acceptable, 00:22:29.81\00:22:32.95 and perfect will of God." 00:22:32.98\00:22:34.55 Don't become like the world, don't let the world shape you. 00:22:34.58\00:22:37.59 Be shaped by the word, not the world. 00:22:37.62\00:22:40.96 The word ought to be shaping our lives. 00:22:40.99\00:22:43.19 And the renewing of your mind. 00:22:43.22\00:22:45.89 Now with that in mind, 00:22:45.93\00:22:47.66 what should a Christian choose to think about? 00:22:47.73\00:22:50.13 "Whatever things are true", 00:22:50.17\00:22:51.63 these are the things to think about. 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.17 "Whatever things are noble, 00:22:53.20\00:22:54.87 whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, 00:22:54.90\00:22:58.81 whatever things are lovely, 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.88 whatever things are of good report, 00:23:00.91\00:23:02.94 if there's any virtue and if there's anything praiseworthy, 00:23:02.98\00:23:06.35 meditate on these things." 00:23:06.38\00:23:08.85 Think about those things that are good. 00:23:08.88\00:23:11.49 Bible tells us in Psalm 101:3, 00:23:11.52\00:23:14.49 "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes." 00:23:14.52\00:23:18.06 Now, based on that standard, 00:23:18.09\00:23:20.36 what should a Christian watch? 00:23:20.40\00:23:24.20 If we believe murder is a sin, 00:23:24.23\00:23:27.74 why would we be entertained watching other people murder? 00:23:27.77\00:23:32.37 If we believe adultery is a sin, 00:23:32.41\00:23:34.64 why would we be entertained 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.48 watching other people commit adultery? 00:23:36.51\00:23:40.08 It's almost like we're enjoying the sin vicariously. 00:23:40.12\00:23:41.42 You say, no, I'd never kill, 00:23:41.45\00:23:42.88 I'd never lie, but I like this program where they lie. 00:23:42.92\00:23:46.42 I'm going to watch this, you know, "Daytime As My Stomach 00:23:46.45\00:23:48.99 Turns", whatever it's called, you know, 00:23:49.02\00:23:50.59 and they got all this intrigue, all this lying, 00:23:50.63\00:23:53.96 and all this adultery, and this espionage, 00:23:54.00\00:23:55.93 and this murder, and I'm going, 00:23:55.96\00:23:57.53 wow, I wonder what's going to happen next. 00:23:57.57\00:23:59.23 I'd never do that, 'cause I'm a Christian, 00:23:59.27\00:24:01.37 but I sure enjoy watching them do it. 00:24:01.40\00:24:04.54 And it's like we're sinning vicariously. 00:24:04.57\00:24:07.48 You know, the Bible tells us, let me see, I think I've got 00:24:07.51\00:24:09.24 that, maybe in the lesson, I just don't remember. 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.71 Romans 1:32, "Who, 00:24:11.75\00:24:14.92 knowing the judgment of God, 00:24:14.95\00:24:16.48 that they that commit such things are worthy of death", 00:24:16.52\00:24:18.55 the penalty for sin is death. 00:24:18.59\00:24:20.19 "They not only do the same, 00:24:20.22\00:24:21.86 but they have pleasure in them that do them." 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.83 Do we have pleasure in watching other things? 00:24:24.86\00:24:28.20 Watching other people's sin? 00:24:28.23\00:24:29.53 Being entertained by the world? 00:24:29.56\00:24:31.03 That makes you who you are, it shapes your thinking. 00:24:31.07\00:24:34.37 The Lord wants us to think pure thoughts, 00:24:34.40\00:24:35.97 but it's hard to think pure thoughts 00:24:36.00\00:24:37.47 if we're filling our minds with typical American media. 00:24:37.51\00:24:41.51 I mean, I know there are occasionally 00:24:41.54\00:24:45.18 good things that are on television, 00:24:45.21\00:24:47.02 there may even be the occasional movie 00:24:47.05\00:24:49.52 that has something historic or edifying. 00:24:49.55\00:24:51.75 It is a very rare exception, 00:24:51.79\00:24:53.76 most of these things are rated R, 00:24:53.79\00:24:55.26 they use God's name in vain, they're full of violence. 00:24:55.29\00:24:57.69 You've got all these warnings before it comes on, 00:24:57.73\00:25:01.03 drugs, violence, sexual content, 00:25:01.06\00:25:04.57 profanity, nudity, 00:25:04.60\00:25:06.20 and you get all this and you're thinking, 00:25:06.23\00:25:07.57 okay, Lord, hope you can bless all this, 00:25:07.60\00:25:10.31 I'm going to watch this now for the next two hours, 00:25:10.34\00:25:11.84 but I'm going to worship you 10 minutes later. 00:25:11.87\00:25:14.14 It affects you. 00:25:14.18\00:25:16.81 What type of music will a true Christian enjoy? 00:25:16.85\00:25:20.48 Oh, this is a difficult one. 00:25:20.52\00:25:23.02 Well, let's look at what the Bible says. 00:25:23.05\00:25:24.35 Psalm 40:3, "He's put a new song in my heart, 00:25:24.39\00:25:28.72 praised to our God." 00:25:28.76\00:25:30.06 The music ought to be music that praises God. 00:25:30.09\00:25:33.03 You know the story in the Bible where king Saul, 00:25:33.06\00:25:34.93 he had evil spirits that would trouble him, 00:25:34.96\00:25:37.43 and David came in, of course, 00:25:37.47\00:25:38.83 David was a great musician and a songwriter, 00:25:38.87\00:25:41.04 wrote about 70 of the Psalms, 00:25:41.07\00:25:43.27 150 Psalms that are in the Bible. 00:25:43.30\00:25:45.91 "And it was so, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, 00:25:45.94\00:25:49.58 that day would take a heart and play with his hand. 00:25:49.61\00:25:53.18 And then Saul would be refreshed and well, 00:25:53.21\00:25:55.42 and the distressing spirit," 00:25:55.45\00:25:56.85 there would be an evil spirit was tormenting Saul, 00:25:56.89\00:25:58.89 "Would depart from him." 00:25:58.92\00:26:01.49 So if good music can drive an evil spirit away, 00:26:01.52\00:26:05.13 would it make a sense the devil's got music 00:26:05.16\00:26:06.73 that would invite the evil spirits in? 00:26:06.76\00:26:10.10 Now everyone, we all agree to this point. 00:26:10.13\00:26:11.90 I mean, how many of you will raise your hands now and say, 00:26:11.93\00:26:14.30 we agree that there's some music 00:26:14.34\00:26:15.90 that is inappropriate for Christians? 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.17 And we all agree. 00:26:18.21\00:26:20.24 How many of you agree that your music is good? 00:26:20.28\00:26:24.91 See, everyone said, 00:26:24.95\00:26:26.31 yeah, God hates bad music, but I like only the good stuff. 00:26:26.35\00:26:28.75 Everyone draws the line though in a little different place. 00:26:28.78\00:26:31.65 There are Bible principles 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.15 that need to guide us in these things. 00:26:33.19\00:26:35.76 What should be the aim of God's people today? 00:26:35.79\00:26:38.26 Very simple friends, 00:26:38.29\00:26:39.93 "We keep his commandments and do those things 00:26:39.96\00:26:43.26 that are pleasing in his sight. 00:26:43.30\00:26:45.63 For this is the love of God, 00:26:45.67\00:26:47.07 that we keep his commandments." 00:26:47.10\00:26:48.44 And notice, "His commandments are not burdensome." 00:26:48.47\00:26:52.64 When you love somebody, you are happy to serve them. 00:26:52.67\00:26:55.11 You're happy to make changes to please them, 00:26:55.14\00:26:57.38 because you love them. 00:26:57.41\00:26:58.98 (gentle instrumental music) 00:26:59.01\00:27:02.78 - [Narrator #1] Don't forget to request 00:27:02.82\00:27:04.12 today's life-changing free resource. 00:27:04.15\00:27:06.39 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, 00:27:06.42\00:27:08.52 you can download a digital copy straight to your computer 00:27:08.56\00:27:11.13 or mobile device. 00:27:11.16\00:27:12.46 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, 00:27:12.49\00:27:15.13 simply text the keyword on your screen to 40544 00:27:15.16\00:27:19.20 or visit the web address shown on your screen 00:27:19.23\00:27:22.00 and be sure to select the digital download option 00:27:22.04\00:27:24.44 on the request page. 00:27:24.47\00:27:25.94 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's word 00:27:25.97\00:27:28.94 with Amazing Facts, wherever and whenever you want, 00:27:28.98\00:27:32.15 and most important, to share it with others. 00:27:32.18\00:27:36.12 - [Narrator #2] Did you know Amazing Facts has a free Bible 00:27:36.15\00:27:38.39 school that you can do from the comfort of your own home?
