there's a passage where several

individuals come to Jesus with
the intention of following him.

I'm going to read this and
then we're gonna--we'll back up

and we'll talk
about it a little bit.

"Now it happened as they
journeyed on the road," Jesus

is going down the road,
"that someone said to him,
00:00:52.01\00:00:56.92
'Lord, I will follow
you wherever you go.'

And Jesus said to him, 'Foxes
have holes and birds of the air

have nests, but the Son of Man
has nowhere to lay his head.'

And then he said to
another, 'Follow me.'

But he said, 'Lord, let me
first go and bury my father.'

And Jesus answered to him, 'Let

So here we have three vignettes,
little scenarios of people who

were invited to follow Jesus.

One actually invites
himself to follow the Lord.

And Jesus is trying to tell
us what's involved and what kind

of commitment it
is in following him.

And I remember hearing about a
lady that she called the police

department and she
said, "What shall I do?
00:01:52.54\00:01:54.94
I opened the basement and
there's a skunk in the basement.
00:01:54.98\00:01:57.75
How do I get them out?"
00:01:57.78\00:01:59.31
Policeman said, "You know,
we can't take care of every
00:01:59.35\00:02:01.45
call like this.
00:02:01.48\00:02:02.82
I just recommend that you get
a loaf of bread, take a piece of
00:02:02.85\00:02:05.45
bread, curl up a bunch of
crumbs, put the crumbs of bread
00:02:05.49\00:02:09.06
on the steps, and place them
in dots on outside and the skunk
00:02:09.09\00:02:14.20
then, you know, will follow
the pieces of bread outside."

In a couple of hours, she called
back the police and she said,

"I've now got two
skunks in my basement."

I guess another skunk outside
found the trail of crumbs before

the one in the basement
found 'em and followed in the

wrong direction.

Well, you know, sometimes
that happens even to believers.

We follow in reverse.

You can read about that
happening to one of Jesus's

most faithful followers.

You remember when Jesus called
Peter, he said, "Follow me."

Peter was willing to leave
everything right then and there
00:02:43.59\00:02:46.16
and follow Jesus.
00:02:46.19\00:02:48.10
But Jesus warned
Peter, "Now, your following is
00:02:48.13\00:02:51.73
not consistent."
00:02:51.77\00:02:53.57
And you can read about this
in the Bible if you go to Mark

chapter 14, "Peter followed
him at a distance, and he went
00:02:55.90\00:03:01.88
into the courtyard
of the high priest.

And he sat down with the
servants," servants of the

priest who is now trying Christ.
00:03:06.45\00:03:08.22
He sat down and mingled with the
enemies of Jesus and he warmed
00:03:08.25\00:03:13.49
himself at their fire.
00:03:13.52\00:03:15.39
You know, a lot of Christians
get into trouble because we try
00:03:15.42\00:03:18.06
to follow Jesus from a distance.
00:03:18.09\00:03:19.93
We don't want to get too close
because we might get ridiculed.

And we start hanging out with
the world and we act like the
00:03:23.43\00:03:25.93
world because we know it's very
unpopular to be a Christian.
00:03:25.97\00:03:29.90
Peter was somewhat
affected by the crowd.

When the crowd was hailing
Jesus, Peter wanted to be right
00:03:32.91\00:03:36.54
at Christ's side, and
so did James and John.

And when he was working
miracles, then the disciples

were hovering around and
they wanted to be his bodyguard.
00:03:42.22\00:03:45.42
But the Bible tells us that at
the cross they stood afar off.

At the trial, they
all forsook him and fled.

Peter, he loved the Lord so
he did want to follow, but he

followed from a distance.
00:03:55.73\00:03:57.87
And they kept saying, "Aren't
you one of his disciples?"

"I don't know what
you're talking about."

He tried to ignore the question.

And finally the third time,
still in Mark 14, and you can

read in verse 69, "A little
later those that stood by said

to Peter again, 'Surely
you're one of them, for you're

a Galilean, your speech,'"
your accent, "'shows it.'"

Now, this time he realized he's
exposed and he tries to just
00:04:18.72\00:04:21.46
prove that he wasn't a follower
of Jesus by going back into his
00:04:21.49\00:04:25.23
old vocabulary as a lost sailor.

Now, Peter was a
pretty rough character.
00:04:28.06\00:04:29.83
Even when he first came
to Christ, he knelt down
00:04:29.86\00:04:32.47
at Jesus's feet and
said, "Lord, depart from me.

You don't know I am a
sinful man," and he was.

And Peter drew on all those old
curse words he knew and he began

to swear, and to curse, and
to say, "I don't know the man of
00:04:41.84\00:04:45.51
whom you speak,"
blankety, blank, blank, blank.

And then the rooster crowed.

And you read in the
gospel, it says he went out and

he wept bitterly.

Some of us have wept
before because we said,

"Lord, I love you.

I want to follow you," but we're
trying to do it from a distance.

You know, the Bible tells
us that John follow Jesus right
00:05:04.27\00:05:06.50
into the judgment hall.
00:05:06.53\00:05:08.00
John did not deny Jesus 'cause
he did not try to hide that
00:05:08.04\00:05:11.74
he loved Jesus.
00:05:11.77\00:05:13.11
If anything wonderful could come
from this revival, something
00:05:13.14\00:05:17.08
I would pray for
would be that those that say
00:05:17.11\00:05:19.68
they're Christians
would really follow Jesus.

What is a Christian?

A Christian is the follower of
the teachings, and the life, and

the example of Christ.

The Bible says he has given us
an example that we should walk

in this wicked world, even as
he walked; that we should follow

in his steps.

Christians should try to imitate
Christ, have the character

Now, going back to some of the
vignettes that we started with,

followers of Jesus here on Earth

have no earthly security.

You remember what he said?

"Lord, I'll follow you wherever
you go," and Jesus said, "Foxes
00:06:05.36\00:06:08.73

have nests, but the Son of Man

has nowhere to lay his head."

Some people realize when they
follow the Lord that it might
00:06:14.40\00:06:17.01
mean they could be unpopular.
00:06:17.04\00:06:19.94
It might mean they could lose
their job, which could threaten

their house, and they say,
"I-- you know, I can't afford
00:06:22.61\00:06:25.21
to follow Jesus.
00:06:25.25\00:06:26.55
It costs too much."

Jesus said, "If you're following
me because you think there's

earthly gain, don't follow me."

I'll tell ya, I've yelled at
my TV a few times because I scan

sometimes through Christian
programs and I hear these

prosperity preachers say, "Oh,
if you just follow Jesus, you're
00:06:38.43\00:06:42.26
going to get your new house,
and you're gonna get healed,
00:06:42.30\00:06:44.97
and you're gonna get your pick
up truck, and you're gonna have
00:06:45.00\00:06:47.27
money, and all your debts
will be paid," and this act like
00:06:47.30\00:06:51.11
following Jesus means
you're supposed to get rich,
00:06:51.14\00:06:53.81
when Christ actually
teaches the opposite.
00:06:53.84\00:06:55.64
It might cost you to follow him.
00:06:55.68\00:06:58.71
And Jesus said, Look, if you're
following me because you think
00:06:58.75\00:07:01.52
you're gonna get an earthly
palace, "I don't even have
00:07:01.55\00:07:04.69
anywhere to lay my head."
00:07:04.72\00:07:06.39
Jesus didn't have much in
the world to call his own except
00:07:06.42\00:07:08.92
his robe, and they
gambled for that when he died.
00:07:08.96\00:07:11.83
And so if you're following Jesus
for earthly gain, you're gonna

be disappointed.
00:07:15.23\00:07:16.67
Another point, followers
of Jesus point two, they have
00:07:16.70\00:07:21.14
no earthly ties.
00:07:21.17\00:07:23.04
Not only no earthly security,
we don't have any earthly ties.
00:07:23.07\00:07:25.94
Remember that other man
said, "Lord, I'll follow you,
00:07:25.97\00:07:29.44
but I first need
to go bury my father."
00:07:29.48\00:07:31.11
Now, it's okay if you're a
Christian to go to the funeral
00:07:31.15\00:07:33.85
of your father.
00:07:33.88\00:07:35.18
In this story, the man is
saying, "I can't follow you
00:07:35.22\00:07:36.99
because, you know,
my father's gettin' old.
00:07:37.02\00:07:38.35
I probably need to wait, hang
around till he dies and take
00:07:38.39\00:07:40.76
care of affairs."
00:07:40.79\00:07:42.12
And Jesus said, "You know,
as long as you're gonna find
00:07:42.16\00:07:44.36
excuses like that and you put
other people first, you're never
00:07:44.39\00:07:47.76
gonna follow me."

He realized that Jesus even
left his own home when he went

out teaching.

Jesus had a mother.

Joseph was probably dead, but
Jesus said, "I've got to put the

kingdom of God first."

You cannot put
somebody else ahead of Christ.

No earthly human tie can
come between you and Jesus.

know this is tough.

He who loves son or daughter

Here today, we've
got a handful of people.

I've got my wife I love.
00:08:23.50\00:08:24.83
I've got one of my sons I love.

I love them, but you know, I
can't love them more than God.

What would you love
more, the giver or the gift?

If someone gives you a gift, is
it right to love the gift more

than the giver?
00:08:37.11\00:08:38.41
Everybody that you love in
your life is a gift from God.

It's not right to love
the gift more than the giver.

You need to love God first.

I knew a dear lady that she
accepted the truth, she came

to church, but she was
real sporadic in her attendance.

And I talked her, she said, "Oh
pastor, you know, my husband's
00:08:51.66\00:08:54.93
not a believer, and he wants me
to go shopping with him, and he

wants me to do this.
00:08:57.57\00:08:58.87
And you know, I
love my husband."
00:08:58.90\00:09:00.54
And she kept putting her husband
first, above her commitment
00:09:00.57\00:09:04.07
to God.
00:09:04.11\00:09:05.41
And I understand that's tough.
00:09:05.44\00:09:06.78
It's a difficult situation.

Then she called me one day, she
said, "Pastor, can you please

come to the hospital.
00:09:10.51\00:09:12.35
My husband was nearly
killed at work in an accident
00:09:12.38\00:09:17.69
and he's in ICU."
00:09:17.72\00:09:19.05
And I came to her, had
prayer for her and her husband.
00:09:19.09\00:09:21.79
He actually started
coming to church after that.
00:09:21.82\00:09:24.49
He survived, but she told
me, "During that accident,"

she said, "God
almost took my husband.
00:09:27.13\00:09:29.20
And God told me I am
putting my husband ahead--"

God said, "You're putting
your husband ahead of me."
00:09:33.50\00:09:35.24
She said, "I've learned
a very valuable lesson."

She said, "Lord, if you
save my husband, I'll always

put you first."

And then she was
at church every week.

Don't ever put
somebody ahead of Jesus.

The devil will always have
someone in your life, might be

a boyfriend, or girlfriend,
or somebody that's trying

to pull you away.

You know, Jesus said it might be
as hard as plucking out an eye,

or cutting off a hand, or
cutting off a foot, but if

you're going to follow him, you
can't have any earthly tie that

is going to stop you
from making that decision.

Followers of Jesus have
no earthly distractions.

You notice that
other example that we read.

He said, "Someone said, 'Lord,
I'll follow you, but let me

first bid them
farewell that are at my house.'

And Jesus said, 'No man, putting
his hand to the plow, and
00:10:13.98\00:10:16.75
looking back, is fit
for the kingdom of God.'"

Now, when Jesus says this,
he is talking about the story

of Elisha.
00:10:22.65\00:10:24.12
When Elijah first calls Elisha,
Elisha is out plowing in the
00:10:24.15\00:10:29.19
field with a yoke of oxen.
00:10:29.22\00:10:31.56
And Elijah goes over to Elisha
and he takes his mantle and he
00:10:31.59\00:10:34.96
puts it on his shoulders, and
that was a symbol in those days
00:10:35.00\00:10:38.03
that he was being called to be
the apprentice prophet, to train
00:10:38.07\00:10:41.87
in to replace
Elijah, a very great honor.
00:10:41.90\00:10:45.24
But Elijah is a poor prophet.
00:10:45.27\00:10:47.44
It says he lives in a lady's
attic, and he's fed by birds,
00:10:47.48\00:10:50.41
and he stays in a cave, and
he's, you know, out by a creek.
00:10:50.45\00:10:53.55
And Elijah had no
earthly treasure, but Elijah had
00:10:53.58\00:10:57.92
the Spirit of God.
00:10:57.95\00:10:59.29
And Elisha, he came
from a wealthy family.
00:10:59.32\00:11:02.32
The Bible says he's out with his
family and they're plowing with
00:11:02.36\00:11:05.43
12 yoke of oxen.
00:11:05.46\00:11:06.76
That means you've
got a lot of land.
00:11:06.80\00:11:08.10
He's a wealthy, young man.
00:11:08.13\00:11:09.43
He's got a lot to inherit, but
he was willing to walk away from
00:11:09.46\00:11:13.64
that plow, he actually
burned it, and follow Elijah.
00:11:13.67\00:11:17.47
He never turned
back to his family.
00:11:17.51\00:11:20.21
He said, "I am going to follow
Elijah," matter of fact, when
00:11:20.24\00:11:22.98
Elijah went to heaven, he
says, "My father, my father, the
00:11:23.01\00:11:25.45
chariot of Israel
and its horsemen."
00:11:25.48\00:11:28.22
And the Bible says he saw it.
00:11:28.25\00:11:30.42
He saw it.
00:11:30.45\00:11:31.82
So now he gets a double
portion of Elijah's spirit.

You know, friends,
this is a reminder.

We're talkin'
about the new heart.

We're talking about the revival.

What did Jesus do
before he ascended to heaven?

He went from one group
of disciples to another

to encourage
them, just like Elijah.

Then Christ ascended
to heaven and then he sent
00:11:47.77\00:11:50.37
the Holy Spirit.

And this is what this story is
telling us, and if we keep our
00:11:52.11\00:11:57.31
eyes fixed on Jesus as Elisha
did Elijah, then we're going
00:11:57.35\00:12:02.62
to receive a double
portion of his spirit.
00:12:02.65\00:12:04.52
How could we
have a double portion?
00:12:04.55\00:12:05.99
You know, Jesus said, "These
works that I've done, greater
00:12:06.02\00:12:08.52
things than these will you
do because I go to the Father."
00:12:08.56\00:12:11.59
If God's people would
only follow--not that we have
00:12:11.63\00:12:14.23
greater power than Christ, but
the scope of what we do around
00:12:14.30\00:12:17.97
the world is gonna be
greater than what Jesus did
00:12:18.00\00:12:20.20
in the territory of Israel.
00:12:20.24\00:12:21.54
I believe in the last days,
God wants to give his people

the latter rain.

How's it gonna happen?

We need to know what it
means to really follow Jesus.

So Elisha followed without
any earthly distractions.

And one old minister told
another minister, a young one,

"Endeavor to keep your
church is small as you can."

What he meant by that
was, preach the truth.

Don't try to grow your

If you read in the Gospel of
Mark, it says there's two men,

but it's only Bartimaeus we get
his name, and he's the one that

does all the speaking.

And they hear that--they
hear there's a commotion.

hearing is sort of accentuated.

And they started
asking, "What's the fuss?

What's going on?"

They say, "The Great Rabbi
has come from Nazareth, Jesus.

He's on his way to
Jerusalem for the feast."

By the way, this is the last
time that Jesus is going to be

passing through Jericho.

It's also the same occasion
when he runs into Zacchaeus in

Jericho, and now he's
on his way out of the city.

And Bartimaeus had heard
that Jesus had healed the blind

before, so as he hears the
crowd approaching, he calls out.

He says, "Son of
David, have mercy on me."

And he wants to make sure that
he can be heard above the crowd.

believe that Jesus can open your

Now is the time to get ready

pretty clear what he wanted.

He had to get led to Jesus.

But he and his companion,
they said, "Lord, that we might

receive our sight."

Jesus said, "Go your way.

Your faith has made you whole."

And then it tells us immediately
he received his sight.

Can you imagine the first thing
he sees is the face of Jesus,

no doubt rejoicing, leaping and

lost out in the world.

This is the purpose of life.

experience, Zacchaeus, a very

God, all things are possible.

He wasn't a believer.

His wife--he said,

You can teach that stuff,"
he said, "but I don't buy it.

I don't see how in the world God
can become a man or even why he

prayer, put the kids to bed.

banging into the window.

aimlessly flying
around, they're colliding.

Some of them are on the

just open the barn, let 'em go
