male announcer: This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.40\00:00:03.70 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.80\00:00:09.70 Doug Batchelor : Jesus spoke a lot about the Sabbath, but He 00:00:14.31\00:00:16.31 never spoke about whether or not it should be kept. 00:00:16.34\00:00:18.08 He spoke about how it should be kept. 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.52 It was always presumed it would be kept because it's one 00:00:20.55\00:00:23.15 of the Ten Commandments. 00:00:23.18\00:00:24.92 God's not going to change one of the Ten Commandments 00:00:24.95\00:00:26.96 without making that very clear. 00:00:26.99\00:00:32.79 Doug: You know, as I was praying about what to share this week, 00:00:32.83\00:00:36.36 the Lord impressed me to talk about something that is very 00:00:36.40\00:00:40.77 basic and foundational, but I think it's good for us to be 00:00:40.80\00:00:43.74 reminded of these things. 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.34 Now, there's few things that are more important than 00:00:46.37\00:00:49.88 the Ten Commandments. 00:00:49.91\00:00:51.91 You know, there's one Jesus, one Bible, one Holy spirit, 00:00:51.95\00:00:55.12 but unfortunately, there are hundreds of different 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.39 Christian denominations. 00:00:58.42\00:01:01.02 And the different denominations argue about different 00:01:01.06\00:01:03.79 theological points. 00:01:03.83\00:01:06.66 I'm sure there's some that would disagree with us, but a lot 00:01:06.70\00:01:08.70 of them disagree with each other over everything from the mode 00:01:08.73\00:01:13.87 of baptism, whether or not you need to speak in tongues if you 00:01:13.90\00:01:16.71 received the Holy Spirit, whether or not the wine 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.74 during the communion should be fermented or unfermented, 00:01:19.77\00:01:24.25 whether or not you should do it every week or once a year. 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.82 There's just a whole plethora of different doctrines that 00:01:26.85\00:01:29.58 churches debate and argue about. 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.45 And some things are more important than others. 00:01:32.49\00:01:34.39 Even within our church you'll find some difference of opinion 00:01:34.42\00:01:38.59 on who comprises the 144,000, and understanding the seven 00:01:38.63\00:01:43.03 trumpets and Daniel 11. 00:01:43.06\00:01:45.17 And, you know, there are some things that maybe are not 00:01:45.20\00:01:47.94 essentials, but if there is anything that is an essential 00:01:47.97\00:01:51.94 to understand, I would think it would be, oh, what do God's 00:01:51.97\00:01:56.58 commandments say? 00:01:56.61\00:01:58.81 What is sin? 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.95 These things are priorities. 00:02:00.98\00:02:03.05 They're very important issues. 00:02:03.08\00:02:04.85 So with that in mind, is Sunday really sacred? 00:02:04.89\00:02:08.49 And we're going to begin at the beginning, 00:02:08.52\00:02:11.39 Genesis chapter 2. 00:02:11.43\00:02:13.40 God made the world in six days-- no really seven days, because He 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.90 wasn't done creating until after the full week. 00:02:15.93\00:02:20.77 He made one more thing, He made a day. 00:02:20.80\00:02:23.71 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.44 of them. 00:02:26.47\00:02:27.81 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made, 00:02:27.84\00:02:31.55 and He rested the seventh day from all His work which 00:02:31.58\00:02:34.48 He had done. 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.18 And God Blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, made it holy, 00:02:36.22\00:02:40.02 because in it He rested from all His work which God created 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.06 and made." 00:02:43.09\00:02:44.43 He did not make it holy for himself. 00:02:44.46\00:02:45.76 He made it holy for man to remember. 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.66 The Bible says the Sabbath was made for man. 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.53 It doesn't say the Sabbath was made for Jews. 00:02:50.57\00:02:53.07 The word there is "anthropos," it means mankind, humanity. 00:02:53.10\00:02:58.31 And it's first time also you're going to find the word "seven" 00:02:58.34\00:03:02.01 mentioned three times. 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.35 It says seven, seven, seven, it's a number associated 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.65 with God. 00:03:05.68\00:03:06.98 The seventh day, the seventh day, the seventh day. 00:03:07.02\00:03:08.32 Very specific. 00:03:08.35\00:03:09.68 He get to the last book of the Bible, you have another 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.02 number associated with man, who was made on the sixth day, 00:03:11.05\00:03:14.19 and it's six, six, six. 00:03:14.22\00:03:15.82 So you've got this contest between the worship of God 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.53 and the worship of man that goes on through the Bible. 00:03:18.56\00:03:22.00 Now, you go to the Ten Commandments. 00:03:22.03\00:03:23.60 You find them in Exodus chapter 20, verse 8, "Remember 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.07 the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:03:27.10\00:03:28.67 Six days you should labor and do all of your work, 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.61 but the seventh day is the Sabbath 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.04 of the Lord your God. 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.08 In it you shall not do any work, your son or your daughter--" 00:03:36.11\00:03:37.68 so forth. 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.05 But very clearly says do all your work six days, seventh day, 00:03:39.08\00:03:42.85 holy time. 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.32 This is one of the Ten Commandments spoken 00:03:44.35\00:03:47.26 by God's voice. 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.26 They are not ten suggestions. 00:03:49.29\00:03:50.63 They're not 10 recommendations. 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.19 God spoke with His own voice, wrote with His own finger His 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.20 eternal law, moral law, for all His people, for all the world 00:03:55.23\00:04:00.10 for that matter. 00:04:00.14\00:04:01.70 So which day is the seventh day? 00:04:01.74\00:04:04.81 Some people say, "Well, you can't really know just using 00:04:04.84\00:04:07.41 the Bible." 00:04:07.44\00:04:09.48 Well, if we start with the dictionary, 00:04:09.51\00:04:10.85 that's not the Bible. 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.18 Dictionary: seventh day, Saturday, seventh day 00:04:12.21\00:04:15.08 of the week. 00:04:15.12\00:04:16.45 You go to the Bible, tells us that Jesus was crucified 00:04:16.48\00:04:19.49 on the Preparation Day, which we know to be Friday. 00:04:19.52\00:04:23.06 Then it says they went home and they kept the Sabbath 00:04:23.09\00:04:25.43 according to the commandment, the seventh day. 00:04:25.46\00:04:27.60 And then he rose. 00:04:27.60\00:04:28.93 They came to the tomb early Sunday morning, the first day. 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.87 People call it Easter Sunday. 00:04:31.90\00:04:33.44 So you can even look in the Bible. 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.80 It's pretty clear. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.14 What day is the Lord's day? 00:04:36.17\00:04:37.51 Now, many Christians will say, Well, you've got the Sabbath 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.28 day, which is what the Jews kept, and then you've got 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.64 the Lord's day, which is what Christians teach. 00:04:42.68\00:04:45.08 And they get this from Revelation chapter 1, verse 00:04:45.11\00:04:48.38 10, where John says, "I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, 00:04:48.42\00:04:53.05 and I heard a voice behind me like the sound of a trumpet." 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.66 And so this is the beginning of Revelation. 00:04:55.69\00:04:59.09 See that's the Lord's Day. 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.80 But there's not a single verse in the Bible that says that that 00:05:01.83\00:05:05.17 is referring to the Lord's Day. 00:05:05.20\00:05:06.53 In fact, it's the contrary. 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.34 John was imprisoned by Rome on the Isle of Patmos where they 00:05:08.37\00:05:12.07 had mines. 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.41 And the prisoners were required to work in the mines, but John 00:05:13.44\00:05:16.81 refused to work on the Sabbath day, and that is when the Lord 00:05:16.85\00:05:20.25 gave him the vision. 00:05:20.28\00:05:21.72 It doesn't say anything in the text that this is now 00:05:21.75\00:05:24.45 some new different day of worship for the children 00:05:24.49\00:05:28.29 of Israel or for the Christians. 00:05:28.32\00:05:30.46 What does the Bible say is the Lord's Day? 00:05:30.49\00:05:33.13 Isaiah 58:13, "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, 00:05:33.16\00:05:37.13 from doing your pleasure on My holy day." 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.54 What day is the Lord's Day? 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.27 Sabbath day. 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.61 Look at this one, Exodus 6. 00:05:43.64\00:05:44.97 We just read the Ten Commandments, "Six days you 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.84 should labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.11 the Sabbath of the Jews." 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.48 Is that what it says? 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.25 Seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord. 00:05:53.28\00:05:57.49 "And Jesus said, 'The son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.'" 00:05:57.52\00:06:02.19 All things that were made, were made by Christ. 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.29 Will that include when he wrote the Ten Commandments? 00:06:04.33\00:06:07.40 Yes. 00:06:07.46\00:06:08.73 So if the Sabbath is the Lord's Day, why do so many people 00:06:08.76\00:06:12.53 worship on Sunday? 00:06:12.57\00:06:15.30 Jesus said, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, 00:06:15.34\00:06:19.11 that you may keep your tradition." 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.08 Sunday keeping is not based on Scripture, it is based 00:06:21.11\00:06:24.55 on a tradition. 00:06:24.58\00:06:25.91 I'm going to prove it to you from the Bible as we go on here 00:06:25.95\00:06:28.42 and from history. 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.25 Some of you have heard this interesting story from history, 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.19 where I think it was Czar Nicholas, he looked out of his 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.79 palace walls one day and he noticed that this guard had 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.89 always been standing at this obscure place on the wall. 00:06:38.93\00:06:41.76 There's no gate. 00:06:41.80\00:06:43.10 There was no door. 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.47 And one day he was walking in the garden. 00:06:44.50\00:06:45.80 He went up to the garden and he said, "Why exactly are you 00:06:45.83\00:06:48.47 standing here?" 00:06:48.50\00:06:49.84 Well, the guard was very nervous, and he said, "Well, 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.97 I have orders to stand here, your majesty." 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.71 And he said, "Do you know why?" 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.05 He said, "No, we've just always had someone here 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.78 24 hours a day." 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.88 So he went to the captain. 00:07:00.92\00:07:02.25 Now, the Czar was getting very curious, and he said, "Why do we 00:07:02.28\00:07:04.62 always have a soldier standing at that particular remote spot 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.66 in the garden? 00:07:07.69\00:07:09.02 There's nothing there." 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.36 And he said, "Well, it's just been a standing order for years. 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.73 We've always had 24 hours a day a guard 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.56 has to be stationed there. 00:07:14.60\00:07:16.56 It's been mandated. 00:07:16.60\00:07:17.93 It's in the archives." 00:07:17.97\00:07:19.27 So the Czar went to look at the archives to try and find 00:07:19.30\00:07:21.27 out why is there a soldier there in the archives. 00:07:21.30\00:07:23.54 It said 100 years earlier Catherine the great was 00:07:23.57\00:07:28.74 entertaining guests. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.38 One of her guests came, a dignitary from another 00:07:30.41\00:07:32.71 country, and gave her a gift of an exotic rosebush. 00:07:32.75\00:07:36.92 They planted the rosebush, and she said, "I don't want this 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.52 to be trampled. 00:07:39.55\00:07:40.89 Have a guard guard my rosebush." 00:07:40.92\00:07:43.36 Well, the rosebush died five years after they planted it, 00:07:43.39\00:07:47.23 but at that point they were in the habit of guarding that spot. 00:07:47.30\00:07:51.00 And so for 100 years, a guard was standing there 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.94 without questioning why he was standing there. 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.20 It was a tradition. 00:07:56.24\00:07:58.41 And there are still traditions that Christians guard that there 00:07:58.44\00:08:02.01 is no rhyme or reason for except that it's 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.75 a tradition. 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.08 There's no biblical reason for it. 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.15 So some of the other Scriptures that explain this, Ezekiel 22, 00:08:08.18\00:08:12.99 verse 26 and verse 31, "Her priests have violated my law 00:08:13.02\00:08:17.76 and profane My holy things. 00:08:17.79\00:08:20.00 They put no difference between the profane 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.60 and the holy. 00:08:22.63\00:08:23.97 They have hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profane 00:08:24.00\00:08:28.54 among them. 00:08:28.57\00:08:29.90 Therefore I poured out my indignation on them." 00:08:29.94\00:08:33.01 You know, one of the reasons I was convinced of the Sabbath 00:08:33.04\00:08:35.24 truth is because after I first learned these things, I went 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.75 to my pastors. 00:08:37.78\00:08:39.71 I used to go to church on Sunday. 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.28 I was so into Christianity I was going to several 00:08:41.32\00:08:45.29 different churches. 00:08:45.32\00:08:46.99 One church said we'd have a Wednesday night Bible study. 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.76 I'd be there. 00:08:48.79\00:08:50.13 And then I'd go to another denomination, 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.53 I'd be at their service. 00:08:51.56\00:08:53.23 Another one would have a special early morning service, 00:08:53.26\00:08:54.73 I went there. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.10 I was going to four or five different churches, studying 00:08:56.13\00:08:57.43 with all these Christian groups in Southern California. 00:08:57.47\00:08:59.67 I was just hungry. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.07 I couldn't get enough. 00:09:01.10\00:09:02.44 But when I learned the Sabbath truth, I'd ask the different 00:09:02.47\00:09:04.54 pastors and say, "So why do we go to church on Sunday?" 00:09:04.57\00:09:09.21 And if you ask ten different pastors, you would get 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.91 11 different answers. 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.62 One would say, these are just a few examples, "Doug, 00:09:14.65\00:09:18.15 we're no longer under the Ten Commandments. 00:09:18.19\00:09:21.72 We're now under Grace." 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.63 I said, "Well, what does that mean? 00:09:23.66\00:09:24.96 Does that mean that we don't need to keep the Ten 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.43 Commandments?" 00:09:26.46\00:09:27.76 They said, "Well, we're not under the law." 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.10 So what, wait, let me help me understand that. 00:09:29.13\00:09:30.43 "Is it okay now to kill?" "Well, no." 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.20 "Steal?" "No." 00:09:32.23\00:09:33.50 "Lying?" "No." 00:09:33.54\00:09:34.94 "Commit adultery?" "No." 00:09:34.97\00:09:36.50 What they really meant is there's one commandment you're 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.67 not supposed to remember anymore. 00:09:38.71\00:09:43.95 That's the Sabbath. 00:09:43.98\00:09:45.28 I said, "But isn't that the one that says remember?" 00:09:45.31\00:09:46.65 So that didn't make sense. 00:09:46.68\00:09:47.98 And so I talked to another one. 00:09:48.02\00:09:49.32 He said, "Because of the Resurrection, Jesus rose 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.92 on the first day of the week, and so it is the new 00:09:51.95\00:09:54.59 Christian Sabbath." 00:09:54.62\00:09:56.26 I said, "That sounds beautiful." 00:09:56.29\00:09:57.63 Said, "Where is the Scripture that tells us that?" 00:09:57.66\00:09:59.73 "Well, there is no specific Scripture, but we've had 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.66 a longstanding tradition." 00:10:02.70\00:10:04.07 As though there's some value in that. 00:10:04.10\00:10:06.47 And then I had another friend. 00:10:06.50\00:10:07.80 He was the most creative. 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.94 And he said, "Doug, back in the days of Joshua, you 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.24 remember Joshua prayed and the sun stood still. 00:10:12.27\00:10:15.28 Saturday turned into Sunday back then." 00:10:15.31\00:10:20.02 And I said, "Well, that's interesting. 00:10:20.05\00:10:21.82 I said, Except why did they continue to keep it 00:10:21.85\00:10:24.39 on the seventh day for another 1,500 years after that?" 00:10:24.42\00:10:28.72 And he couldn't answer that. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.09 And they were all giving me difference that they didn't 00:10:30.13\00:10:31.79 agree with each other. 00:10:31.83\00:10:33.16 I said something's wrong. 00:10:33.19\00:10:34.50 They are hiding their eyes from a very obvious truth 00:10:34.56\00:10:39.00 because they have counted the cost of what will it mean if 00:10:39.03\00:10:43.34 I take a stand for this Biblical truth? 00:10:43.37\00:10:45.31 I'll lose my congregation. 00:10:45.34\00:10:46.64 I'll be very unpopular. 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.41 I know pastors that have taken a stand, and it cost them. 00:10:48.44\00:10:52.25 I know some pastors took a stand for the truth, and the majority 00:10:52.28\00:10:55.42 of the church followed them in the Sabbath truth. 00:10:55.45\00:11:00.26 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.59 free resource. 00:11:02.62\00:11:03.86 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 00:11:03.89\00:11:06.23 download a digital copy straight to your computer 00:11:06.26\00:11:08.66 or mobile device. 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.37 To get your copy of today's free gift, simply call us and ask 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.64 for the offer number shown on your screen or visit the web 00:11:13.67\00:11:17.14 address and download a digital copy. 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.54 And be sure to select the digital download option 00:11:19.57\00:11:21.94 on the request page. 00:11:21.98\00:11:23.31 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's word 00:11:23.35\00:11:26.48 with "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want and most 00:11:26.51\00:11:30.29 important, to share it with others. 00:11:30.32\00:11:34.29 Doug: So what we're going do now, if we want to know why 00:11:34.32\00:11:38.89 would any Christian keep Sunday instead of the Sabbath, 00:11:38.93\00:11:42.50 the first day instead of the seventh. 00:11:42.53\00:11:45.30 We're gonna look at every reference to Sunday, except you 00:11:45.33\00:11:48.57 realize the word Sunday does not appear in the New Testament. 00:11:48.60\00:11:51.87 Sometimes you'll hear the word "sundry" if you're reading 00:11:51.91\00:11:54.28 the King James. 00:11:54.31\00:11:55.64 Sundry is not Sunday. 00:11:55.68\00:11:57.68 Sundries means different. 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.31 God in various times and sundry manners spoke to the prophets 00:11:59.35\00:12:02.68 in time past. 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.02 That means different manners. 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.69 So if you look at every reference to the first day 00:12:06.72\00:12:10.09 of the week, which is what we commonly refer to as Sunday, you 00:12:10.13\00:12:14.86 might find if there's a change. 00:12:14.93\00:12:16.70 There's eight references in the New Testament. 00:12:16.73\00:12:18.80 And nobody's going to argue the Old Testament because it's 00:12:18.83\00:12:21.00 very clear it's the seventh day there. 00:12:21.04\00:12:22.90 So we're going to take them one by one. 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.54 Does that sound fair? 00:12:24.57\00:12:26.01 And we'll look at them and see what the Bible says. 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.51 Look at the first four references are simply 00:12:28.54\00:12:30.81 historical. 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.18 They are talking about the time of the Resurrection. 00:12:32.21\00:12:34.92 Matthew 28, verse 1, "In the end of the Sabbath--" 00:12:34.95\00:12:39.79 Harold Camping was the founder of Family Radio. 00:12:39.82\00:12:42.29 Good radio station, I listened to them. 00:12:42.32\00:12:44.36 But he used to answer Bible questions, and he would always-- 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.66 when people asked about the Sabbath, he would go 00:12:47.73\00:12:49.46 to this verse. 00:12:49.50\00:12:50.80 He'd say, "See what it says right there? 00:12:50.83\00:12:52.17 The end of the Sabbath. 00:12:52.20\00:12:53.50 That means the Sabbath is now over. 00:12:53.54\00:12:54.87 You don't need to keep the Sabbath anymore." 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.71 That's not what it's saying. 00:12:56.74\00:12:58.21 It's saying that that week after the crucifixion, 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.01 after the Sabbath was over, it's saying that they came early 00:13:01.04\00:13:04.55 in the morning on the first day of the week. 00:13:04.58\00:13:06.25 He tried to build a whole doctrine. 00:13:06.28\00:13:07.75 I told you there's 11 different answers if you ask 10 different 00:13:07.78\00:13:10.95 pastors, the reason why. 00:13:10.99\00:13:13.19 "As it began towards the first day of the week." 00:13:13.22\00:13:14.82 Now, is that a new command, to keep the first day? 00:13:14.86\00:13:18.13 You find built into that anything that says now we have 00:13:18.16\00:13:20.66 a new Sabbath day? 00:13:20.70\00:13:21.96 It's on the first day. 00:13:22.00\00:13:23.33 No, it's a simple historical record. 00:13:23.37\00:13:25.33 Now did--was it important that Jesus rose on the first day 00:13:25.37\00:13:28.04 of the week? 00:13:28.07\00:13:29.70 Absolutely. 00:13:29.74\00:13:32.07 Does that make it a new Sabbath? 00:13:32.11\00:13:34.34 Was there anything wrong with the seventh day where God 00:13:34.38\00:13:36.61 had to now change it? 00:13:36.64\00:13:38.45 No. 00:13:38.48\00:13:40.12 Was the seventh day Sabbath chosen before or after sin? 00:13:40.15\00:13:45.02 Before sin. 00:13:45.05\00:13:46.35 It's part of God's perfect plan. 00:13:46.39\00:13:47.72 There's nothing wrong with it. 00:13:47.76\00:13:49.22 Did God do important things on Thursday? 00:13:49.26\00:13:52.73 Was the Lord's Supper important? 00:13:52.76\00:13:55.13 That's Thursday. 00:13:55.16\00:13:56.46 Does it make it a new Sabbath? 00:13:56.50\00:13:58.17 How important is the Crucifixion? 00:13:58.20\00:14:01.50 What day of the week was that? 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.24 Friday. 00:14:03.27\00:14:04.61 Is that a new Sabbath? 00:14:04.64\00:14:06.24 Mark 16:9, a very similar reference, "Now when Jesus was 00:14:06.27\00:14:09.74 risen on the first day of the week, He appeared first 00:14:09.78\00:14:12.35 to Mary Magdalene." 00:14:12.38\00:14:13.98 Do you find built into this verse that there's 00:14:14.02\00:14:15.98 a new commandment? 00:14:16.02\00:14:18.39 No, there's nothing there, simply the record 00:14:18.42\00:14:20.72 of what happened. 00:14:20.76\00:14:22.39 John 20, very similar, "The first day of the week comes Mary 00:14:22.42\00:14:25.93 early while it was still dark. 00:14:25.96\00:14:27.96 She came to the tomb." 00:14:28.00\00:14:29.96 And just again a historical record. 00:14:30.00\00:14:32.53 There's no new voice from a mountain, no new finger 00:14:32.57\00:14:35.70 writing new law in stone saying, "Now the first day is to be our 00:14:35.74\00:14:39.17 new Sabbath." 00:14:39.21\00:14:40.51 Nothing of the sort, Mark 16:1 and 2, "Now when the sabbath was 00:14:40.54\00:14:44.41 passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome, 00:14:44.45\00:14:47.75 brought spices, that they might come and anoint Him." 00:14:47.78\00:14:51.22 Now, this to me is actually proof that the seventh day was 00:14:51.25\00:14:54.56 still important. 00:14:54.59\00:14:56.86 If Jesus had taught the apostles that they didn't need to keep 00:14:56.89\00:14:59.89 the Sabbath anymore, or the seventh day wasn't going 00:14:59.93\00:15:02.63 to be important, it was not gonna be meaningful for them, 00:15:02.66\00:15:07.37 why was it so important to the disciples that they would 00:15:07.40\00:15:10.91 not finish embalming His body on Friday when the Sun 00:15:10.94\00:15:16.24 was going down? 00:15:16.28\00:15:17.95 They knew Jesus would not be pleased with that. 00:15:17.98\00:15:19.28 There was a lot of work involved in. 00:15:19.31\00:15:20.65 And then they said let's wait until after the Sabbath 00:15:20.68\00:15:22.92 has passed. 00:15:22.95\00:15:24.59 That's why they waited because the Sabbath was important. 00:15:24.62\00:15:27.59 You know, Jesus even kept the Sabbath in His death. 00:15:27.62\00:15:29.46 He died Friday, rested through the Sabbath, rose 00:15:29.49\00:15:32.19 after it was over. 00:15:32.23\00:15:33.93 And so the idea that it's been done away with 00:15:33.96\00:15:36.26 just doesn't hold water. 00:15:36.30\00:15:38.27 No new commandment here. 00:15:38.30\00:15:40.24 "Very early in the morning on the first day of the week, 00:15:40.27\00:15:42.24 they came to the tomb when the sun had risen." 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.61 Again, it's just telling us what happened there. 00:15:44.64\00:15:47.64 And then the next reference is in Luke. 00:15:47.68\00:15:49.91 Luke 23 verse 56 says, "They returned, and they prepared 00:15:49.94\00:15:54.15 spices and fragrant oils. 00:15:54.18\00:15:55.68 They rested on the sabbath day according to the Commandments." 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.85 So they prepared. 00:15:58.89\00:16:00.26 That was the Preparation Day. 00:16:00.29\00:16:01.96 They got everything ready. 00:16:01.99\00:16:03.29 That's what we would call Friday. 00:16:03.32\00:16:04.66 They kept the Sabbath according-- 00:16:04.69\00:16:06.76 Does he say the Jewish law? 00:16:06.80\00:16:08.43 Luke was a Gentile. 00:16:08.46\00:16:09.76 He says the Sabbath. 00:16:09.80\00:16:11.23 He states it like every Christian will know about this. 00:16:11.27\00:16:13.27 And he's writing this years after the Crucifixion. 00:16:13.30\00:16:15.80 He could've said the old Jewish Sabbath. 00:16:15.84\00:16:17.71 He says according to the commandment, 00:16:17.74\00:16:19.24 not the old commandment. 00:16:19.27\00:16:20.94 It's all stated as though it's still in existence. 00:16:20.98\00:16:23.58 "Now on the first day of the week, very early 00:16:23.61\00:16:25.45 in the morning, they came to the sepulchre," or the tomb. 00:16:25.48\00:16:29.28 Is there anything in here that says, "And God established a new 00:16:29.32\00:16:32.65 Sabbath day?" 00:16:32.69\00:16:34.36 So we're looking at all the references to the first day. 00:16:34.39\00:16:36.36 We're looking for that commandment. 00:16:36.39\00:16:38.23 I know one evangelist was very dramatic. 00:16:38.26\00:16:40.20 When he would preach on this subject, he would bring $1,000 00:16:40.23\00:16:44.03 and he put it up front for everyone to see it. 00:16:44.07\00:16:47.34 He said, "I'm going to give this away to anybody tonight that can 00:16:47.37\00:16:50.94 show me this missing text in the Bible. 00:16:50.97\00:16:54.08 What I want from you is to show me one commandment in the Bible 00:16:54.11\00:16:57.91 to keep the first day as the new Christian Sabbath." 00:16:57.95\00:17:02.12 Of course, everybody's very quiet because it's not there. 00:17:02.15\00:17:04.95 And he always got to take his money home. 00:17:04.99\00:17:07.82 So he was happy doing that. 00:17:07.86\00:17:10.83 Now we'll go to the sixth reference text referring 00:17:10.86\00:17:14.66 to the first day of the week. 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.06 And it talks--is it a new Sabbath day? 00:17:16.10\00:17:18.37 This is talking about the day of the Resurrection. 00:17:18.40\00:17:20.17 It says, "Then that same day at evening--" 00:17:20.20\00:17:22.97 Now, wait, what day is this? 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.57 First day. 00:17:25.61\00:17:26.91 When does a day begin and end in the Bible? 00:17:26.94\00:17:30.21 So when it's talking about the same day that Christ 00:17:30.25\00:17:32.31 rose, first day of the week, evening, it's getting ready 00:17:32.35\00:17:34.88 to turn into Monday. 00:17:34.92\00:17:37.15 See what's happening? 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.12 "When the doors were shut, the disciples were assembled 00:17:39.15\00:17:43.36 to inaugurate a new Sabbath." 00:17:43.39\00:17:45.39 Is that why they're assembled? 00:17:45.43\00:17:47.23 It says, "They were assembled for fear of the Jews." 00:17:47.30\00:17:50.90 The Jews were saying the body was stolen. 00:17:50.93\00:17:52.67 They thought they were going to come looking for them. 00:17:52.70\00:17:55.07 And Jesus came, met with them, and said, "peace to you." 00:17:55.10\00:17:58.87 Now, you also look later, I think it's verse 26 in the same 00:17:58.91\00:18:03.04 chapter, it says, "Eight days later He met with them again." 00:18:03.08\00:18:06.72 This time Thomas is there. 00:18:06.75\00:18:09.45 What is eight days after Sunday? 00:18:09.48\00:18:13.22 Seven days after Sunday would be what? 00:18:13.25\00:18:15.62 Sunday. 00:18:15.66\00:18:16.96 Eight days after Sunday is Monday. 00:18:16.99\00:18:19.83 So He also meets with them on a Monday. 00:18:19.86\00:18:22.80 Is that a new Sabbath? 00:18:22.83\00:18:24.90 So the idea because Jesus did something and met 00:18:24.93\00:18:28.04 with the disciples-- 00:18:28.07\00:18:29.37 He met with them by the sea when they were fishing. 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.04 Obviously, if they were fishing, it wasn't the Sabbath. 00:18:31.07\00:18:33.71 But He met with them then too. 00:18:33.74\00:18:35.04 He met with them over a period of 40 days 00:18:35.08\00:18:37.28 after the Resurrection. 00:18:37.31\00:18:39.65 Does this seventh passage say that Sunday is holy? 00:18:39.68\00:18:43.82 1 Corinthians 16, verse 2. 00:18:43.85\00:18:45.79 We've only got one more after this. 00:18:45.82\00:18:47.32 But this is one some people use. 00:18:47.36\00:18:49.22 They say this is proof that the disciples were now keeping 00:18:49.26\00:18:52.59 Sunday as a new Christian Sabbath. 00:18:52.63\00:18:55.70 Paul says, "On the first day of the week--" and the way it 00:18:55.73\00:18:58.10 actually reads in the original, "On the beginning of the week 00:18:58.13\00:19:02.67 let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as 00:19:02.70\00:19:06.78 he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come." 00:19:06.81\00:19:10.38 Paul is on his way through Asia. 00:19:10.41\00:19:12.41 He's on his way to Jerusalem to take a special offering 00:19:12.45\00:19:15.78 from the churches in Jerusalem. 00:19:15.82\00:19:17.15 He's making haste. 00:19:17.19\00:19:18.49 There's a famine. 00:19:18.52\00:19:19.85 They're hungry. 00:19:19.89\00:19:21.19 And he said, "Look, at the beginning of the week," 00:19:21.22\00:19:23.53 they used to get their accounts in order in the first 00:19:23.56\00:19:25.59 of the week. 00:19:25.63\00:19:27.20 Everybody set something aside when you've done your 00:19:27.23\00:19:29.16 bookkeeping so there is no church offering when I come. 00:19:29.20\00:19:33.90 It's actually saying the very opposite. 00:19:33.94\00:19:36.07 This is not talking about passing the plate 00:19:36.10\00:19:38.11 Sunday morning. 00:19:38.14\00:19:39.81 He's saying, "The beginning of the week, lay something aside 00:19:39.84\00:19:43.68 so that we don't have a collection when I come. 00:19:43.71\00:19:45.75 It's ready to give to me. 00:19:45.78\00:19:47.08 And I'm making haste. 00:19:47.12\00:19:48.45 And I'm on my way." 00:19:48.48\00:19:50.62 Is this the new Sabbath commandment? 00:19:50.65\00:19:53.99 Does he say anything here about, "Now, do not work on that day. 00:19:54.02\00:19:57.86 Make sure that we gather together for worship 00:19:57.89\00:19:59.93 on that day." 00:19:59.96\00:20:01.56 And it's just a practical recommendation that they set 00:20:01.60\00:20:05.03 aside an offering for collection purposes. 00:20:05.07\00:20:08.64 And this is the eighth now in the final reference 00:20:08.67\00:20:11.44 to the first day of the week that you're going to find 00:20:11.47\00:20:13.04 in the Bible. 00:20:13.07\00:20:14.38 And people work real hard to make hay out of this one. 00:20:14.41\00:20:18.08 Is it saying that Sunday is a new holy day? 00:20:18.11\00:20:20.28 Let's look at it together. 00:20:20.32\00:20:21.65 It's Acts 20, verse 7. 00:20:21.68\00:20:22.98 If you've got your Bibles, I recommend you turn there. 00:20:23.02\00:20:25.39 Acts 20, verse 7. 00:20:25.42\00:20:27.06 Luke is telling a remarkable story. 00:20:27.09\00:20:30.76 We'll find out why he's telling the story. 00:20:30.79\00:20:33.53 "Now on the first day of the week--" yes that would be 00:20:33.56\00:20:36.33 Sunday, "when the disciples came together to break bread." 00:20:36.36\00:20:39.77 Ah, ah, you got it? 00:20:39.80\00:20:41.44 They came together to break bread. 00:20:41.47\00:20:42.77 They're having a communion service. 00:20:42.80\00:20:45.17 They're gathering on the first day, and they're having 00:20:45.21\00:20:47.44 a communion service. 00:20:47.48\00:20:48.78 This must be evidence that they now are worshiping 00:20:48.81\00:20:52.55 on the first day. 00:20:52.58\00:20:54.58 It is the new Sabbath. 00:20:54.62\00:20:55.92 I respectfully disagree. 00:20:55.95\00:20:57.29 I don't think that's what they're saying at all. 00:20:57.32\00:20:59.69 It says, "Paul is ready to depart the next day. 00:20:59.72\00:21:02.79 He speaks to them, and he continues his message 00:21:02.82\00:21:05.76 until midnight." 00:21:05.79\00:21:08.06 Now, when does the first day begin? 00:21:08.10\00:21:12.60 Sundown. 00:21:12.63\00:21:13.94 So when it says that they're meeting on the first day 00:21:13.97\00:21:16.10 of the week, and it's an evening meeting, what this is is 00:21:16.14\00:21:18.71 a Saturday night meeting. 00:21:18.74\00:21:21.81 And why is he talking so long? 00:21:21.84\00:21:23.98 Because he's not-- he's beginning a journey 00:21:24.01\00:21:26.08 the next day. 00:21:26.11\00:21:27.78 If Sunday is the new Sabbath, why is he beginning a journey? 00:21:27.82\00:21:31.15 Let's keep reading. 00:21:31.19\00:21:33.42 First of all, the scholar Horatio Hackett said, "The Jews 00:21:33.46\00:21:36.36 reckon the day from evening to morning, that on that 00:21:36.39\00:21:39.33 principle the evening of the first day of the week 00:21:39.36\00:21:41.76 would have been our Saturday night." 00:21:41.80\00:21:43.33 By the way this scholar is not a member of our church. 00:21:43.37\00:21:46.30 He's just being honest. 00:21:46.33\00:21:48.07 "The apostle held his last religious service on Saturday 00:21:48.10\00:21:51.44 evening, and consequently resumed his journey 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.18 on Sunday morning." 00:21:54.21\00:21:55.84 Commentary on the Book of Acts. 00:21:55.88\00:21:57.88 So Acts 20, it says, "A young man named Eutychus was sitting 00:21:57.91\00:22:01.78 in the window, who's sinking into a deep sleep. 00:22:01.82\00:22:05.19 He falls down from the third story, and he's taken up dead 00:22:05.22\00:22:08.26 because Paul was long in preaching," which is a good 00:22:08.29\00:22:10.29 recommendation for pastors not to preach too long because it 00:22:10.33\00:22:13.13 can be lethal when that happens. 00:22:13.16\00:22:18.40 So Paul goes down. 00:22:18.43\00:22:20.27 He embraces the young man. 00:22:20.30\00:22:22.40 He says his life is still in him. 00:22:22.44\00:22:24.11 Eutychus is resurrected. 00:22:24.14\00:22:26.57 Luke is telling this story because he's saying 00:22:26.61\00:22:28.61 a resurrection took place. 00:22:28.64\00:22:29.98 Notice what happened. 00:22:30.01\00:22:31.31 "When they came up after Eutychus is 00:22:31.35\00:22:32.68 resurrected, they broke bread." 00:22:32.71\00:22:34.38 Now they're breaking bread again. 00:22:34.42\00:22:35.95 They "Eaten and talked a long while, even till daybreak." 00:22:35.98\00:22:38.42 They stayed up all night long. 00:22:38.45\00:22:39.92 They eat bread twice and then Paul departed. 00:22:39.95\00:22:44.09 The next day--oh by the way, breaking bread in Acts 20:46, 00:22:44.13\00:22:49.70 you only break bread on--what does breaking bread mean? 00:22:49.73\00:22:54.74 Is it always a communion service? 00:22:54.77\00:22:56.84 "So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, 00:22:56.87\00:23:01.04 and breaking bread daily in the temple." 00:23:01.08\00:23:03.48 Daily breaking bread from house to house. 00:23:03.51\00:23:05.65 Jesus said, "Give us this day our daily bread." 00:23:05.68\00:23:07.85 Breaking bread did not always mean a communion service. 00:23:07.88\00:23:10.72 It meant eating. 00:23:10.75\00:23:12.35 You remember on the road to Emmaus he went in and broke 00:23:12.39\00:23:14.39 bread with them. 00:23:14.42\00:23:15.72 They were eating. 00:23:15.76\00:23:17.06 And that was a Sunday night, which would have been Monday. 00:23:17.09\00:23:18.89 So it's not saying anywhere in these verses that Sunday is 00:23:18.93\00:23:23.00 now a new Sabbath. 00:23:23.03\00:23:24.37 They ate their bread with gladness, simplicity 00:23:24.40\00:23:26.13 of heart. 00:23:26.17\00:23:27.50 The next day Paul said goodbye to them. 00:23:27.54\00:23:28.84 He began a journey, that would have been Sunday. 00:23:28.87\00:23:31.47 Would that be when you begin a long epic journey? 00:23:31.51\00:23:34.21 No. 00:23:34.24\00:23:35.58 Prior day Sabbath he spent with them all day, and that 00:23:35.61\00:23:38.01 evening he preached. 00:23:38.05\00:23:39.81 Eutychus fell out the window. 00:23:39.85\00:23:41.15 He's resurrected. 00:23:41.18\00:23:42.48 That's why Luke is telling the story. 00:23:42.52\00:23:43.95 He's not telling the story to say a new Sabbath was 00:23:43.99\00:23:46.82 inaugurated in Acts chapter 20. 00:23:46.86\00:23:50.83 Wouldn't God have told us if one of the Ten Commandments 00:23:50.86\00:23:53.26 had been changed? 00:23:53.29\00:23:55.33 What do you think? 00:23:55.36\00:23:57.23 How many of you heard that they've changed the law now? 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.93 Highway 65, you can go 80 miles an hour. 00:24:00.04\00:24:03.61 Isn't that exciting? 00:24:03.64\00:24:04.94 Did you hear that? 00:24:04.97\00:24:06.31 How many of you believe me? 00:24:06.34\00:24:08.18 Nobody believes a pastor. 00:24:08.21\00:24:11.28 Why don't you believe me? 00:24:11.31\00:24:13.08 Because you know that if the state is going to change 00:24:13.11\00:24:17.22 a major law that would affect everybody's lives, they are 00:24:17.25\00:24:20.39 responsible to thoroughly announce that and advertise it 00:24:20.42\00:24:24.59 to avoid accidents, right? 00:24:24.63\00:24:25.96 Everyone's going to know about that. 00:24:25.99\00:24:28.36 Now, when God gave the Sabbath, He speaks it with His voice. 00:24:28.40\00:24:31.07 He writes it with His finger in front of an entire nation. 00:24:31.10\00:24:34.67 If He's going to change that, don't you think there'd be 00:24:34.70\00:24:38.11 something in the New Testament? 00:24:38.14\00:24:39.97 There'd be some battle. 00:24:40.01\00:24:42.71 Look at all the argument that the Jews had with the Christians 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.91 over circumcision. 00:24:45.95\00:24:48.38 You find that discussed all through the writings of Paul. 00:24:48.42\00:24:52.05 There was a great debate over that. 00:24:52.09\00:24:53.46 They had a great debate about whether or not you get eat 00:24:53.49\00:24:55.19 food sacrificed to idols or not. 00:24:55.22\00:24:57.36 But you realize there's never a debate about whether or not 00:24:57.39\00:25:00.16 you should keep the Sabbath. 00:25:00.20\00:25:01.46 Jesus spoke a lot about the Sabbath, but He never 00:25:01.50\00:25:03.80 spoke about whether or not it should be kept. 00:25:03.83\00:25:05.33 He spoke about how it should be kept. 00:25:05.37\00:25:11.37 male announcer: Don't forget to request today's life-changing 00:25:11.97\00:25:14.31 free resource. 00:25:14.34\00:25:15.68 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 00:25:15.71\00:25:17.98 download a digital copy straight to your computer 00:25:18.01\00:25:20.42 or mobile device. 00:25:20.45\00:25:22.12 To get your digital copy of today's free gift, simply 00:25:22.15\00:25:24.79 text the keyword on your screen to 40544 or visit the web 00:25:24.82\00:25:29.29 address shown on your screen and be sure to select 00:25:29.32\00:25:32.33 the digital download option on the request page. 00:25:32.36\00:25:34.86 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's word 00:25:34.93\00:25:38.10 with "Amazing Facts" wherever and whenever you want, and most 00:25:38.13\00:25:41.90 important, to share it with others. 00:25:41.94\00:25:47.58 announcer: What if you could know the future?
