male announcer: This presentation is brought 00:00:02.36\00:00:03.63 to you by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.77\00:00:06.63 Doug Batchelor: My friends that believe once saved, 00:00:14.41\00:00:15.71 always saved, they say, "So, once I am saved, 00:00:15.74\00:00:17.85 it doesn't matter what I do. 00:00:17.88\00:00:19.18 I could, you know, turn from the Lord and go back to the world, 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.75 and sin like the devil, but God's promised I am saved." 00:00:21.78\00:00:25.22 So, there's millions of people out there that have 00:00:25.25\00:00:28.92 this false security. 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.09 It is deadly. 00:00:31.13\00:00:32.96 Doug: Typically, you come to church, 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.10 and you hear the pastor talk about how the lost can be saved, 00:00:38.13\00:00:43.14 how the lost can be saved. 00:00:43.17\00:00:44.71 It's a wonderful message in the Bible, 00:00:44.74\00:00:47.08 and I think everyone here knows that but in case you don't 00:00:47.11\00:00:49.71 and you're lost, I want you to know you can be saved. 00:00:49.74\00:00:54.38 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.09 that which is lost." 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.49 Jesus comes to save the lost. 00:00:58.52\00:01:00.96 John 3:17, "God did not send His Son into the world to condemn 00:01:00.99\00:01:04.86 the world, but through Him the world might be saved." 00:01:04.89\00:01:09.40 1 Timothy 1:15, "This is a faithful saying and worthy of 00:01:09.43\00:01:12.70 all acceptance that Jesus Christ came into the world," 00:01:12.73\00:01:15.40 for what reason? 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.21 "To save sinners." 00:01:17.24\00:01:19.11 Jesus comes to save the lost. 00:01:19.14\00:01:20.94 But our message isn't today that Jesus can save the lost. 00:01:20.98\00:01:25.41 That's part of the message. 00:01:25.45\00:01:27.65 The question we want to address today is, 00:01:27.68\00:01:29.78 Can saved be lost? 00:01:29.82\00:01:32.52 That's a very important question because whether you know it 00:01:32.55\00:01:35.92 or not, there are a lot of dangerous doctrines that are out 00:01:35.96\00:01:40.80 in the world. 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.40 Among Protestants, about 30% of Protestants believe 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.70 in predestination. 00:01:45.73\00:01:48.67 They actually believe in the-- it's, you know, 00:01:48.70\00:01:52.14 Calvinist or Reformed theology. 00:01:52.17\00:01:54.94 You've heard the expression, "Once saved, always saved." 00:01:54.98\00:01:58.08 Now, that's really a package of different beliefs. 00:01:58.11\00:02:00.55 And don't misunderstand, Calvin was a great reformer. 00:02:00.58\00:02:04.02 He was a tremendous theologian. 00:02:04.05\00:02:06.89 He wrote the book "Institutes of the Christian Religion" 00:02:06.92\00:02:09.39 when he was in his 20's. 00:02:09.42\00:02:10.73 He had an incredible mind, and he contributed a great deal. 00:02:10.76\00:02:13.60 But some things, they were coming out of such darkness 00:02:13.63\00:02:16.56 I believe that he misunderstood, that can be dangerous. 00:02:16.60\00:02:20.54 The idea that once you're saved, you can't be lost is, 00:02:20.57\00:02:25.57 I think, a dangerous belief. 00:02:25.61\00:02:27.28 Another part of that is the idea that Jesus's death on the cross 00:02:27.31\00:02:31.51 wasn't to save everybody, but he only shed enough blood 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.95 and only suffered enough for those he knew would be saved, 00:02:34.98\00:02:37.82 better known as the elect. 00:02:37.85\00:02:40.09 And then, the third, which I find the most egregious of all, 00:02:40.12\00:02:44.26 is the idea that God has predetermined who he's gonna 00:02:44.29\00:02:49.20 save and there are others that he has deemed he created 00:02:49.23\00:02:52.90 to be lost, and nobody really has any choice. 00:02:52.93\00:02:57.27 It's all only based on God's choice. 00:02:57.31\00:03:00.88 So, this fatalistic idea, it's almost like Hinduism 00:03:00.91\00:03:04.35 that's just, you know, "you are what you are, 00:03:04.38\00:03:06.01 you can't change your circumstances, 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.35 or you don't have a choice," I believe flies in the face 00:03:07.38\00:03:10.22 of what the Bible says when Joshua said, 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.02 'Choose ye this day who you will serve." 00:03:13.05\00:03:15.92 We very much do have a choice and we very much 00:03:15.96\00:03:18.29 do have responsibility. 00:03:18.33\00:03:20.16 And the choices we make every day do lend themselves 00:03:20.20\00:03:23.10 towards our ultimate destiny. 00:03:23.13\00:03:26.53 So, for any who might be fuzzy on the subject, 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.57 let's just make it clear what the Bible teaches. 00:03:29.60\00:03:34.98 And so, I've just got to the heart of the question, 00:03:35.01\00:03:37.11 can the saved be lost? 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.11 And there's other things we're gonna talk about in the process. 00:03:39.15\00:03:42.05 Now, you might think, well, as long as you're sincere, 00:03:42.08\00:03:44.82 it doesn't matter what you believe. 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.49 Wrong. 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.49 The Bible tells us Matthew 7:21, "Not everyone that says to me, 00:03:49.52\00:03:53.29 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, 00:03:53.33\00:03:55.96 but he that does the will of my Father in heaven." 00:03:56.00\00:03:59.13 Now, my friends that believe once saved, 00:03:59.17\00:04:00.60 always saved, they sort of believe that once you're saved, 00:04:00.64\00:04:03.54 you get a new heart. 00:04:03.57\00:04:05.21 You're born again. 00:04:05.24\00:04:06.54 God said, "You know, I will never lose any that come to me." 00:04:06.57\00:04:08.94 And there's some key verses they have, 00:04:08.98\00:04:10.81 I don't want to undermine there are some verses that not 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.42 rightly placed or in the wrong context, it can confuse you. 00:04:13.45\00:04:18.05 They say, "So once I am saved, it doesn't matter what I do. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.92 I could, you know, turn from the Lord and go back to the world 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.43 and the sin like the devil, but God's promised I am saved 00:04:23.46\00:04:26.63 and I'm gonna be there." 00:04:26.66\00:04:28.36 And Pastor Ross and I hear it all the time when people call 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.37 in with Bible questions. 00:04:30.40\00:04:31.70 They say, "Well, I was saved back when I was nine years old. 00:04:31.73\00:04:35.20 I gave my heart to the Lord." 00:04:35.24\00:04:36.54 They say, "I haven't been walking with the Lord 00:04:36.57\00:04:38.37 for 20 years now, and I've got this drinking problem. 00:04:38.41\00:04:40.94 And I'm having an affair, and I want to know--" 00:04:40.98\00:04:43.18 And we're going, "Brother, you are not saved." 00:04:43.21\00:04:44.78 "Oh, I was saved. I was saved." 00:04:44.81\00:04:47.22 We're going, "No, you're not. 00:04:47.25\00:04:49.38 'Cause Jesus said, you'll know them by their fruit. 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.15 So, there's millions of people out there that have this 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.72 false security that is deadly. 00:04:55.76\00:04:59.83 That's as bad as having a defibrillator 00:04:59.86\00:05:01.90 with a dead battery. 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.00 You know what I mean? 00:05:04.03\00:05:05.37 Clear. 00:05:05.40\00:05:06.70 Wait, nothing's happening. 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.34 Wouldn't that be a bad time to find out there's no power? 00:05:08.37\00:05:12.01 And so, this is what's gonna happen. 00:05:12.04\00:05:14.54 "Many will say to me in that day," 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.44 what day's he talking about?" 00:05:16.48\00:05:18.28 The day of the Lord, the great judgment day. 00:05:18.31\00:05:19.95 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.82 and cast out devils in your name, 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.85 and done many wonderful works in your name?' 00:05:24.89\00:05:26.82 And I'll declare to them, 'I never knew you 00:05:26.86\00:05:29.19 depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'" 00:05:29.22\00:05:34.10 So, it doesn't matter what a profession is if a person's 00:05:34.13\00:05:37.00 practicing lawlessness, then are they really converted? 00:05:37.03\00:05:42.84 Is the question. 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.71 Well, I want to first do this in sequence. 00:05:44.74\00:05:46.47 Let's address the big question that I started with, did Jesus, 00:05:46.51\00:05:49.58 in his sacrifice, only die for the elect, 00:05:49.61\00:05:54.38 a certain group, or did he die for everybody? 00:05:54.42\00:05:57.59 2 Corinthians 5:15, "And he died for all, 00:05:58.79\00:06:04.06 that those who live should no longer live for themselves, 00:06:04.09\00:06:07.03 but for him who died for them." 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.50 John 1:29, "The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming 00:06:09.53\00:06:13.27 and he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God 00:06:13.30\00:06:14.87 that takes away the sin of the elect." 00:06:14.90\00:06:17.87 Is that what he said? 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.21 The sin of who? The whole world. 00:06:19.24\00:06:22.11 First John 2:2, "And he himself is the appropriation 00:06:22.14\00:06:25.78 for our sins, and not ours only but for the whole world." 00:06:25.81\00:06:30.42 I mean, if God wants to say the whole world, 00:06:30.45\00:06:32.89 if that was inadequate, what other words would he use? 00:06:32.92\00:06:35.89 The whole, whole world. 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.53 What else could he say? 00:06:37.56\00:06:38.89 He's trying to make it clear for everybody. 00:06:38.93\00:06:40.40 He's not talking about this planet and the dirt. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.70 He's talking about the people. 00:06:42.73\00:06:44.47 So now, is salvation available to everybody? 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.64 That's the other question. 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.10 They say, "No, he didn't die for all. 00:06:49.14\00:06:50.81 It's just available for the elect." 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.44 Romans 5:18, "Therefore, as through one man's offense, 00:06:53.48\00:06:58.18 judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, 00:06:58.21\00:07:01.92 even so through one man's righteousness, 00:07:01.95\00:07:04.39 at one man's righteous act, Jesus's sacrifice, the free gift 00:07:04.42\00:07:09.02 came to all men, resulting in justification of life." 00:07:09.06\00:07:13.70 Romans 10:12, "For there is no distinction between Jew 00:07:13.73\00:07:17.73 and Greek, for the same Lord is over all is rich 00:07:17.77\00:07:21.64 to all who call upon Him. 00:07:21.67\00:07:24.37 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 00:07:24.41\00:07:27.28 Is that clear? 00:07:27.31\00:07:28.94 Anybody who calls on the name of the Lord. 00:07:28.98\00:07:30.88 Now, some Calvinists will take that verse, 00:07:30.91\00:07:33.35 all you gotta do is call on the name of the Lord 00:07:33.38\00:07:35.12 and you're saved. 00:07:35.15\00:07:36.79 So, you pray, you call on the Lord, 00:07:36.82\00:07:39.25 you're saved and then go on and live the way you want. 00:07:39.29\00:07:41.32 That's not what that verse is saying. 00:07:41.36\00:07:42.96 Calling on the Lord means those who have a life 00:07:42.99\00:07:44.69 of calling upon God. 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.03 And so, it's an ongoing behavior. 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.17 1 Timothy 2, verse 3 and 4, "For this is good and acceptable in 00:07:50.20\00:07:54.84 the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved." 00:07:54.87\00:08:00.18 It's not just a few elect that are gonna be saved. 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.48 He doesn't want anyone to be lost. 00:08:02.51\00:08:04.71 So, this idea that God said, "Well, you know, I've gotta-- 00:08:04.75\00:08:08.22 I've gotta make some sinners out there." 00:08:08.25\00:08:10.25 Or I've heard people say, "Well, you know, Jesus said, 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.72 I'm saving the the apostles, except for Judas, 00:08:13.76\00:08:16.86 'cause somebody had to be the fall guy, 00:08:16.89\00:08:19.46 that the prophecies might be fulfilled." 00:08:19.49\00:08:21.00 So, Judas had no choice. 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.26 No, Jesus-- God knew he would do it, 00:08:23.30\00:08:25.63 but he did it because of his choice. 00:08:25.67\00:08:29.07 Or you read the verse where it says, 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.11 "And God hardened Pharaoh's heart." 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.81 So, God is looking down from heaven he's going, 00:08:33.84\00:08:35.74 "Let me see, who will I save? 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.55 Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, you can be the Pharaoh, 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.15 I'm gonna harden your heart. 00:08:40.18\00:08:41.48 No matter what happens, you are not gonna repent 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.45 because I'm not giving you the capacity to repent. 00:08:43.49\00:08:45.65 You're just gonna be lost because it makes for good story 00:08:45.69\00:08:50.06 so Pharaoh, you're lost, so I'm hardening your heart." 00:08:50.09\00:08:53.23 Keep reading, you gotta compare Scripture with Scripture. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.63 You'll find it says many more times, 00:08:55.66\00:08:57.73 "Pharaoh hardened his heart." 00:08:57.77\00:09:01.70 See, it's the way that God hardened Pharaoh's heart 00:09:01.74\00:09:04.84 it's simply saying that the circumstances that God sent, 00:09:04.87\00:09:07.68 because Pharaoh was proud, it hardened him. 00:09:07.71\00:09:11.08 It's like someone said one time, "The sun can shine on wax, 00:09:11.11\00:09:16.18 and it will melt it. 00:09:16.22\00:09:17.59 The sun can shine on clay and it will harden it." 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.79 It's the same sun, it's shining on different substance. 00:09:20.82\00:09:26.13 So, if a person has a proud heart, 00:09:26.16\00:09:28.20 the circumstances that might humble one king like David or 00:09:28.23\00:09:32.43 Manasseh, they humbled themself, when the circumstances came, 00:09:32.47\00:09:35.60 will harden somebody like the pharaoh. 00:09:35.64\00:09:39.27 And so, it really is, what is the substance? 00:09:39.31\00:09:42.68 Does that make sense? 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.48 John 3:16, Who knows that on? 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.52 "That whosoever believes in Him might not perish, 00:09:47.55\00:09:51.05 but have everlasting life." 00:09:51.09\00:09:53.46 Go to 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning 00:09:53.49\00:09:56.56 His promise, as some men count slackness." 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.06 Talking about, why is it taking them so long to come back? 00:09:59.09\00:10:01.60 So, he hasn't forgotten his promise. 00:10:01.63\00:10:02.93 "But he's longsuffering toward us, 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.03 not willing that any should perish." 00:10:05.07\00:10:08.77 And so, yeah, there's a battle between good and evil. 00:10:08.80\00:10:11.37 It is not God's will that innocent people suffer. 00:10:11.41\00:10:15.11 It's not God's will that the devil rebelled. 00:10:15.14\00:10:17.85 None of the evil is God's will. 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.98 If you want to know God's will, you look in Genesis, 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.32 chapter 1 and 2, and you see a perfect paradise 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.52 with creatures made in his image, completely happy. 00:10:25.55\00:10:29.19 They're living in bliss, everything is good, 00:10:29.22\00:10:31.13 good, very good. 00:10:31.16\00:10:32.46 That's God's will. 00:10:32.49\00:10:33.96 When the devil came in and he brought the sin, 00:10:34.00\00:10:35.66 that's not his will. 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.33 He doesn't want you to perish, which is why he sent Jesus 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.93 so you have an option. 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.67 But he can't force love and he can't change your heart. 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.97 That's something we must do. 00:10:45.01\00:10:46.98 That leads us to the big question, 00:10:47.01\00:10:50.05 once saved, always saved? 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.68 Once a person is saved, can they then be lost? 00:10:51.71\00:10:55.45 Now, I'll tell you why this doctrine developed, 00:10:55.48\00:11:00.82 and there are two extremes. 00:11:00.86\00:11:03.43 Who wants an experience where you come to Jesus to be saved, 00:11:03.46\00:11:07.20 but you just never feel you're good enough. 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.20 And every time you think a bad thought, 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.83 or do a wrong thing, you say, "Now I'm lost. 00:11:10.87\00:11:12.53 I'm sorry, Lord. 00:11:12.57\00:11:13.87 Now, I'm saved. 00:11:13.90\00:11:15.20 Oh, but what if I do something wrong, now I'm lost. 00:11:15.24\00:11:16.64 Now I'm saved, now--" Repent, confess, 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.71 repent, confess, sin, repent, committed sin, 00:11:18.74\00:11:20.74 and you're going back and forth and it's like, 00:11:20.78\00:11:22.84 you can go crazy like that. 00:11:22.88\00:11:24.65 You have no assurance. 00:11:24.68\00:11:27.05 So, theologians who said, "Does God want us to always be living, 00:11:27.08\00:11:31.59 and wondering, and hoping, that we might be saved 00:11:31.62\00:11:34.69 and always in doubt." 00:11:34.72\00:11:36.49 You're miserable 'cause you're just always wondering, 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.06 "Did I do something wrong?" 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.39 And there's no peace, there's no assurance. 00:11:39.43\00:11:41.73 And they said that that can't be the answer so it must be 00:11:41.76\00:11:44.47 that once you are saved, you can't be lost. 00:11:44.50\00:11:46.94 That's the only way you would have that assurance 00:11:46.97\00:11:48.90 and that security. 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.27 They call it eternal security, is one of the names 00:11:51.31\00:11:53.84 for once saved, always saved. 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.04 Well, that's the extreme solution. 00:11:56.08\00:11:59.11 That's also the other problem, the idea, 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.25 "Okay, I'm saved now, I can do whatever I want." 00:12:01.28\00:12:03.82 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends, in just a moment, 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.82 we're going to return for the rest of today's presentation. 00:12:07.86\00:12:10.83 You know, the power of choice is an amazing gift from God, 00:12:10.86\00:12:14.10 but when a person is saved, do they choose God 00:12:14.13\00:12:17.40 or does he choose them? 00:12:17.43\00:12:19.80 And once a person is saved, do they still have the freedom 00:12:19.83\00:12:23.20 to reverse that decision? 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.47 Well, this is probably one of the most deeply discussed 00:12:25.51\00:12:28.31 concepts in the Bible. 00:12:28.34\00:12:30.51 But if we're confused about what really constitutes 00:12:30.55\00:12:32.98 true salvation, well, that could be the most expensive mistake 00:12:33.01\00:12:37.02 we ever make. 00:12:37.05\00:12:38.79 Fortunately, you don't have to be confused about the good news. 00:12:38.82\00:12:42.82 Amazing Facts would like to send you a special gift called, 00:12:42.86\00:12:45.89 "Can a saved man choose to be lost?" 00:12:45.93\00:12:49.03 This is a short but very insightful book 00:12:49.06\00:12:51.67 for anyone who has questions about the once saved, 00:12:51.70\00:12:54.60 always saved teaching that's now exploding through 00:12:54.64\00:12:57.17 the Christian church. 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.71 It'll help you to find clarity and lasting meaning for 00:12:58.74\00:13:01.38 your life, while inspiring you with the goodness 00:13:01.41\00:13:04.48 and the fairness of God's kingdom. 00:13:04.51\00:13:06.25 So, don't wait, friend. 00:13:06.28\00:13:07.72 To get your free copy, call the number on the screen and ask 00:13:07.75\00:13:10.29 for offer number 112, or visit the web address. 00:13:10.32\00:13:14.02 And after you read this incredible resource, 00:13:14.06\00:13:16.06 make sure and share it with a friend. 00:13:16.09\00:13:18.56 Well, let's return to today's presentation and learn 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.90 some more amazing facts from the Word of God. 00:13:20.93\00:13:23.90 Doug: "No matter what I do, I have peace, I'm saved, 00:13:25.73\00:13:28.54 but don't you dare tell me otherwise 00:13:28.57\00:13:30.01 'cause you're gonna shake me. 00:13:30.04\00:13:31.37 You're gonna take away my peace and my security." 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.71 And so, that's the other extreme. 00:13:33.74\00:13:36.11 Now, you know, I have a lot of Baptist friends believe 00:13:36.14\00:13:38.05 in eternal security, and they're very godly people. 00:13:38.08\00:13:40.92 They don't try to exploit it, but I've also preached 00:13:40.95\00:13:44.19 in some Baptist churches where people said, 00:13:44.22\00:13:45.85 "You better not go along with a sermon 'cause 00:13:45.89\00:13:47.86 the football game starts at 12." 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.56 And so, you know, you and I saw them gathering outside 00:13:50.59\00:13:54.13 and smoking right after church, and then go home 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.93 and drink beer and watch football. 00:13:56.97\00:13:58.50 And they say, "Yeah, I was saved at 12 years old, 00:13:58.53\00:14:00.40 I gave my heart to the Lord." 00:14:00.44\00:14:02.50 But they're not living for God. 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.84 And so, you've got these two extremes of people 00:14:04.87\00:14:06.71 that are constantly in fear. 00:14:06.74\00:14:09.41 They're always looking at their works. 00:14:09.44\00:14:11.85 And you got the other group that they're they say, 00:14:11.88\00:14:14.22 "Once I was saved and I'm saved by faith, 00:14:14.25\00:14:15.75 it doesn't matter what I do." 00:14:15.78\00:14:18.45 Now, I want to make it clear, we are saved entirely 00:14:18.49\00:14:20.52 by grace through faith. 00:14:20.56\00:14:21.86 We are not saved by works, but that is not a license 00:14:21.89\00:14:24.89 to live a life of sin. 00:14:24.93\00:14:26.26 So, I'm just gonna tell you straight up, yes, 00:14:26.29\00:14:28.53 if you are not continuing to daily walk in the Lord, 00:14:28.56\00:14:31.40 you can lose that assurance and you can lose eternal life. 00:14:31.43\00:14:36.44 Let me give you some verses. 00:14:36.47\00:14:38.51 Galatians 5, verse 4, "You have become estranged from Christ, 00:14:38.54\00:14:43.31 you who attempt to be justified by the law; 00:14:43.35\00:14:45.78 you have fallen from grace." 00:14:45.81\00:14:47.75 Now, no matter what you think about grace and the law there, 00:14:47.78\00:14:49.82 Paul says grace-- these are people, 00:14:49.85\00:14:51.92 he's writing to the church in Galatians. 00:14:51.95\00:14:53.36 You can fall from it. 00:14:53.39\00:14:54.76 Now if you've fallen from grace, are you saved? 00:14:54.79\00:14:56.22 If you're only saved by grace and you've fallen from grace, 00:14:56.26\00:14:58.23 are you still saved? 00:14:58.26\00:14:59.56 No. 00:14:59.59\00:15:01.13 So, Paul said it. 00:15:01.16\00:15:02.46 Mark 13:13 Jesus said, "He that endures 00:15:02.50\00:15:05.57 to the end will be saved." 00:15:05.60\00:15:10.07 So, when do you finally know? 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.41 At the end. 00:15:12.44\00:15:13.81 You've got to continue enduring. 00:15:13.84\00:15:15.88 Now, that doesn't mean you can't have peace that you're saved. 00:15:15.91\00:15:19.51 And I'll explain that because the word "saved" 00:15:19.55\00:15:21.28 is used different ways. 00:15:21.32\00:15:23.42 Paul said, 1 Corinthians 9:27, "But I keep my body under 00:15:23.45\00:15:27.39 and I bring it into subjection, lest, that by any means 00:15:27.42\00:15:30.63 when I preach to others, I myself should be a castaway." 00:15:30.66\00:15:33.66 Paul was saying, "I need to continually bring 00:15:33.70\00:15:36.36 my body into subjection." 00:15:36.40\00:15:38.43 Paul said, "I die daily." 00:15:38.47\00:15:39.97 Now if once you're saved, you're always saved, 00:15:40.00\00:15:41.64 why would you need to die daily? 00:15:41.67\00:15:43.67 But Paul said, "Daily I must deny myself." 00:15:43.71\00:15:46.37 Jesus said, "Whoever takes up his cross 00:15:46.41\00:15:47.71 daily denies himself and follows me." 00:15:47.74\00:15:51.25 Those are the terms of Jesus, "Daily take up your cross, 00:15:51.28\00:15:53.85 deny yourself, follow me." 00:15:53.88\00:15:56.25 And if you should cease to daily have that ongoing relationship, 00:15:56.28\00:15:59.09 you're--it's dangerous. 00:15:59.12\00:16:02.29 Hebrews 10:26, "If we sin willfully," 00:16:02.32\00:16:05.73 and that there means if we continue to live a life of sin, 00:16:05.76\00:16:08.70 doesn't mean if you once sin. 00:16:08.73\00:16:11.90 "But if we sin willfully after we've received the knowledge of 00:16:11.93\00:16:14.87 the truth," all right, so he's talking right now to somebody. 00:16:14.90\00:16:17.24 "They received the knowledge of the truth." 00:16:17.27\00:16:20.11 But they turn from it for willful, ongoing sin. 00:16:20.14\00:16:24.01 "There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 00:16:24.05\00:16:26.31 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.82 and fiery indignation that will devour the adversaries." 00:16:28.85\00:16:32.72 Go--same chapter, Hebrews 10:35, "Therefore do not cast away 00:16:32.75\00:16:38.76 your confidence, which has a great reward. 00:16:38.79\00:16:41.80 For you need endurance." 00:16:41.83\00:16:45.40 He that endures will be saved. 00:16:45.43\00:16:46.94 "So that after you've done the will of God, 00:16:46.97\00:16:49.17 you may receive the promise." 00:16:49.20\00:16:52.37 "So, what in the world is going on here, Pastor Doug, 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.94 can we have any peace?" 00:16:54.98\00:16:58.31 The secret to the Christian life is you've got to keep moving. 00:16:58.35\00:17:02.58 A lot of Christians think you come to the Lord, 00:17:02.62\00:17:04.42 you say a prayer, that is done with now. 00:17:04.45\00:17:07.26 You come to the Lord and you are saved from your past sins, 00:17:07.29\00:17:11.46 you are justified, that is true. 00:17:11.49\00:17:14.83 You are saved by grace and justified when you come 00:17:14.83\00:17:18.20 to the Lord. 00:17:18.23\00:17:19.53 When you get off your knees after you've asked them 00:17:19.57\00:17:20.90 to forgive your sins, you have salvation, of justification. 00:17:20.94\00:17:24.71 But you have not been saved yet from the power of sin 00:17:24.74\00:17:28.54 in the world. 00:17:28.58\00:17:29.88 The devil is gonna be there tempting you. 00:17:29.91\00:17:32.48 And so, you continually day by day, 00:17:32.51\00:17:34.48 you've got the freedom to choose. 00:17:34.52\00:17:37.29 And we are encouraged all through the Scriptures 00:17:37.32\00:17:39.69 to continue choosing God. 00:17:39.72\00:17:42.32 But can we have peace? 00:17:42.36\00:17:44.69 Where does the word "confidence"come from? 00:17:44.73\00:17:48.53 When you say con means with, fidelity or fidence means faith, 00:17:48.56\00:17:54.70 with faith. 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.07 He who believes and is baptized will be saved. 00:17:56.40\00:18:00.11 Can you have security? 00:18:00.14\00:18:03.78 If you believe. 00:18:03.81\00:18:05.48 John 3:36, "He who believes in Son has everlasting life." 00:18:05.51\00:18:10.45 Now, isn't that a good promise? 00:18:10.49\00:18:12.32 What does it mean to believe? 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.52 That's a big question. 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.26 Some people think that means just believe that he exists 00:18:16.29\00:18:19.09 or believe that he died, believe that he lived, 00:18:19.13\00:18:21.20 believe that he rose. 00:18:21.23\00:18:22.56 All those things I just mentioned, 00:18:22.60\00:18:24.03 does the devil believe all of those? 00:18:24.07\00:18:26.40 Does the devil believe that God lives? 00:18:26.43\00:18:29.04 He knows it better than you, used to see him in his glory. 00:18:29.07\00:18:31.91 Does the devil know that Jesus came to earth? 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.21 Does he know that he died for our sins? 00:18:34.24\00:18:35.91 Does he know that he rose again? 00:18:35.94\00:18:38.38 He does. He knows all that. 00:18:38.41\00:18:39.71 He even knows he loves you. 00:18:39.75\00:18:41.22 It's not gonna save him. 00:18:41.25\00:18:44.19 It's a kind of belief where it means the word "believe" means 00:18:44.22\00:18:47.49 to be live. 00:18:47.52\00:18:49.52 The word believe means to be live. 00:18:49.56\00:18:51.43 It means to live in something. 00:18:51.46\00:18:54.10 It's not just the mental assent 'cause James said 00:18:54.13\00:18:56.36 the devils believe like that. 00:18:56.40\00:18:58.53 It means saying, "I'm willing to do your will, Lord." 00:18:58.57\00:19:04.61 You know, the reason that it's important to understand 00:19:04.64\00:19:07.84 that God can give us power not only to justify us, 00:19:07.88\00:19:13.25 but he can give us power to save us from the power of temptation 00:19:13.28\00:19:16.92 and sin, is when you know that God will do his part, 00:19:16.95\00:19:21.72 you have more security. 00:19:21.76\00:19:24.13 What is righteousness by faith? 00:19:24.16\00:19:26.66 When you believe that God hears your prayer for forgiveness, 00:19:28.63\00:19:32.17 and you are justified, and you believe that the moment 00:19:32.20\00:19:34.14 you prayed, that he forgives all your past sins, 00:19:34.17\00:19:36.67 and he gives you power, and he is gonna begin creating 00:19:36.71\00:19:38.87 a new heart in you, that gives you confidence that, 00:19:38.91\00:19:43.51 "Hey, I've got eternal life." 00:19:43.55\00:19:45.78 If you have eternal life, how will that motivate you 00:19:45.81\00:19:48.48 to be different? 00:19:48.52\00:19:50.05 If you know that God says, "I am the author and the finisher of 00:19:50.09\00:19:52.85 your faith, I will stay with you if you continue to turn to me. 00:19:52.89\00:19:55.79 You may fall, but turn right back to me," 00:19:55.82\00:19:58.86 and see if he doesn't grow you. 00:19:58.89\00:20:01.36 That should give you confidence. 00:20:01.40\00:20:03.33 I remember reading when they were building the 00:20:03.37\00:20:04.77 Golden Gate Bridge, at first they had no safety precautions, 00:20:04.80\00:20:09.34 and 23 men slipped and fell to their deaths in the water below. 00:20:09.37\00:20:15.54 Finally, they thought, "You know, we need to do something," 00:20:15.58\00:20:18.05 'cause it was in the early stages. 00:20:18.08\00:20:20.15 They'd already lost 23 men, and a guy named Strauss helped 00:20:20.18\00:20:23.79 develop, he was an engineer, a net that was spread 00:20:23.82\00:20:28.42 all the way across. 00:20:28.46\00:20:29.76 They'd never had a safety device like this on a big project. 00:20:29.79\00:20:32.59 They built a net at $100,000. 00:20:32.63\00:20:34.56 And for us, it would be like $10 million today, 00:20:34.56\00:20:37.03 that went across the entire span. 00:20:37.07\00:20:40.14 You know what they discovered after they put 00:20:40.17\00:20:41.60 the net under there? 00:20:41.64\00:20:43.17 First of all, the net saved like 19 men. 00:20:43.20\00:20:45.24 But the other thing they noticed was once the net showed up, 00:20:45.27\00:20:48.54 the men, because of their confidence, 00:20:48.58\00:20:52.05 were a lot braver and the work went a lot faster, 00:20:52.08\00:20:55.58 and it was a lot more successful because the men had security. 00:20:55.62\00:20:59.69 Now, do you hear what I'm saying? 00:20:59.72\00:21:01.69 Because you cannot say, "Once saved, always saved," 00:21:01.72\00:21:04.43 doesn't mean you cannot have security in your relationship 00:21:04.46\00:21:07.20 with the Lord. 00:21:07.23\00:21:09.03 You've just gotta be careful about being presumption. 00:21:09.06\00:21:11.37 I've used this illustration before. 00:21:11.40\00:21:13.17 Karen and I got married. 00:21:13.20\00:21:15.14 We've actually got witnesses to the wedding today. 00:21:15.17\00:21:17.24 You make very restrictive vows. 00:21:17.27\00:21:20.61 You promise to keep yourself only unto that other person, 00:21:20.64\00:21:24.38 and we love each other. 00:21:24.41\00:21:25.71 We made those promises. 00:21:25.75\00:21:28.98 Now, if I want to, I could break that promise tomorrow. 00:21:29.02\00:21:32.22 I could break it today. 00:21:32.25\00:21:33.96 I am free. 00:21:33.99\00:21:35.69 I never have, God willing I never will. 00:21:35.72\00:21:39.79 I don't worry about it. 00:21:39.83\00:21:41.46 I don't worry about her because when you've got love and faith, 00:21:41.50\00:21:46.27 you can have confidence. 00:21:46.30\00:21:48.44 But that doesn't mean we don't have the freedom. 00:21:48.47\00:21:52.64 See what I'm saying? 00:21:52.67\00:21:54.21 And so, this is how it is in our relationship with the Lord. 00:21:54.24\00:21:57.11 He loves you. He accepts you. 00:21:57.15\00:21:59.55 He adopts you, and he'll never let go of you. 00:21:59.58\00:22:01.78 But you can let go of him. 00:22:01.82\00:22:03.28 His love for years non-failing. 00:22:03.32\00:22:05.09 Life and death cannot separate you from his love. 00:22:05.12\00:22:07.86 My Calvinist friends say, "That means you can't be lost." 00:22:07.89\00:22:09.82 No, it means he will not stop loving you, 00:22:09.86\00:22:12.93 but you are still free 'cause you can't force love. 00:22:12.96\00:22:15.96 The idea once God saves someone he takes away their freedom, 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.57 what does that mean, you're a robot now? 00:22:18.60\00:22:21.44 That's not loving anymore. 00:22:21.47\00:22:23.97 "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest you fall." 00:22:24.01\00:22:28.28 So, you want to have confidence, but you don't want 00:22:28.31\00:22:31.01 to have arrogance. 00:22:31.05\00:22:33.21 You need to have faith, but be careful. 00:22:33.25\00:22:35.28 Again, Hebrews 4:1, "Therefore since a promise remains 00:22:35.32\00:22:37.92 of entering his rest, let us fear lest any of us 00:22:37.95\00:22:41.36 seem to come short of it." 00:22:41.39\00:22:43.06 We need to be God-fearing and yet have peace. 00:22:43.09\00:22:46.59 See, there's a balance here in the Christian life. 00:22:46.63\00:22:49.43 Romans 10:13, 00:22:49.46\00:22:51.23 "Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." 00:22:51.27\00:22:55.07 And if we are calling on God, he promises to save us, 00:22:55.10\00:22:58.04 but we need to press on. 00:22:58.07\00:23:00.68 Revelation 3:5, "He who overcomes will be clothed 00:23:00.71\00:23:03.61 in white raiment," again, he's speaking to the church, 00:23:03.65\00:23:06.95 "and I will not blot his name from the Book of Life." 00:23:06.98\00:23:10.65 Now, why would Jesus even say that unless it was possible 00:23:10.69\00:23:13.72 for a name to be taken from the Book of Life? 00:23:13.76\00:23:16.19 If your name, once put in the Book of Life, 00:23:16.22\00:23:18.16 could never be taken out, why would he say that? 00:23:18.19\00:23:20.96 Matter of fact, Exodus 33, didn't expect me 00:23:21.00\00:23:23.93 to go to the Old Testament. 00:23:23.97\00:23:25.27 Exodus 32, verse 33, "And the Lord said to Moses, 00:23:25.30\00:23:29.54 'Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out 00:23:29.57\00:23:32.57 of my book.'" 00:23:32.61\00:23:34.21 So, even in the Old Testament, 00:23:34.24\00:23:35.81 this is what Jesus is referring to here in Revelation 3, 00:23:35.84\00:23:38.48 God's enters a person in his book, 00:23:38.51\00:23:41.32 when you come to Christ and you're justified, 00:23:41.35\00:23:43.15 you're saved, your name is entered in the Book of Life, 00:23:43.18\00:23:45.82 but then you must press on through sanctification 00:23:45.85\00:23:48.62 and faith, and you have the victory, amen? 00:23:48.66\00:23:53.26 So, he doesn't want us to live in fear. 00:23:53.29\00:23:55.43 1 John 3:18, "There is no fear in love. 00:23:55.46\00:23:58.17 The perfect love casts out fear." 00:23:58.20\00:24:01.47 God has promised in Hebrews 13, verse 5, 00:24:01.50\00:24:03.87 "I will never leave you or forsake you." 00:24:03.91\00:24:06.54 "Being confident," Philippians 1:6, 00:24:06.57\00:24:08.71 "Of this very thing, he that has begun a good work 00:24:08.74\00:24:11.28 and you will complete it." 00:24:11.31\00:24:12.61 God gives you so many promises not to be discouraged, 00:24:12.65\00:24:15.22 not to think he doesn't want to save you. 00:24:15.25\00:24:16.82 He's desperate to save every one of us, 00:24:16.85\00:24:19.45 but you need to cooperate. 00:24:19.49\00:24:21.46 Don't--there's two ditches you can fall in, 00:24:21.49\00:24:23.93 one is get discouraged and say, "I'm never gonna make it," 00:24:23.96\00:24:25.96 the others say, "Once I'm saved, I can't be lost." 00:24:25.99\00:24:28.13 You need to be mature and biblical 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.53 about what it means to be saved. 00:24:31.57\00:24:34.20 So, God wants us to have some assurance, doesn't he? 00:24:34.24\00:24:36.54 He doesn't want us to live in fear. 00:24:36.57\00:24:38.97 Ezekiel chapter 33. 00:24:39.01\00:24:41.61 He says in verse 12, "Therefore, O son of man, 00:24:41.64\00:24:44.18 say to the children of your people, 00:24:44.21\00:24:46.05 'The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him 00:24:46.08\00:24:49.75 in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness 00:24:49.78\00:24:53.12 of the wicked, it will not-- he will not fall because of it 00:24:53.15\00:24:55.99 in the day of his--he turns from his wickedness; 00:24:56.02\00:24:58.93 nor shall the right just be able to live because 00:24:58.96\00:25:01.30 of his righteousness and the day that he sins." 00:25:01.33\00:25:04.20 That's pretty clear. 00:25:04.23\00:25:05.57 "When I say to the righteous that he will surely live, 00:25:05.60\00:25:07.77 but he trusts in his own righteousness 00:25:07.80\00:25:10.97 and he commits iniquity," this is describing the 00:25:11.01\00:25:13.14 "Once saved, always saved" people. 00:25:13.17\00:25:15.21 He says to the righteous, "You'll live, I've saved you. 00:25:15.24\00:25:17.05 You're forgiven." 00:25:17.08\00:25:18.38 "But he trusts in his own righteousness and commits 00:25:18.41\00:25:20.45 iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; 00:25:20.48\00:25:23.59 but because of the iniquity that he has committed, 00:25:23.62\00:25:25.39 he shall die. 00:25:25.42\00:25:26.72 Again, when I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' 00:25:26.76\00:25:29.66 if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, 00:25:29.69\00:25:33.43 if the wicked restores the pledge, 00:25:33.46\00:25:35.26 gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes 00:25:35.30\00:25:37.70 of life without committing iniquity, 00:25:37.73\00:25:40.04 he shall surely live; he will not die. 00:25:40.07\00:25:42.97 None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered 00:25:43.00\00:25:45.77 against him; he shall surely live." 00:25:45.81\00:25:48.48 God is telling us he' covering the two extremes, 00:25:48.51\00:25:51.71 right, and that wonder is he's saying, 00:25:51.75\00:25:53.45 "Look, if you follow me, you can live." 00:25:53.48\00:25:56.32 Now, we're saved by his grace because if we're gonna get 00:25:56.35\00:25:58.49 what we deserve, we're all doomed, right? 00:25:58.52\00:26:01.42 Penalty for sin is death, none of us has hope. 00:26:01.46\00:26:03.29 So, if anyone makes it, it's grace for everyone. 00:26:03.32\00:26:06.26 But when you are saved by grace and you accept that, 00:26:06.29\00:26:09.90 embrace that by faith, the Bible says we should walk 00:26:09.93\00:26:12.90 in a newness of life, amen?
