male announcer: This presentation is brought 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.07 to you by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:04.20\00:00:07.07 Doug Batchelor: My friends that believe once saved, 00:00:14.84\00:00:16.14 always saved, they say, "So, once I am saved, 00:00:16.18\00:00:18.28 it doesn't matter what I do. 00:00:18.31\00:00:19.61 I could, you know, turn from the Lord and go back to the world, 00:00:19.65\00:00:22.18 and sin like the devil, but God's promised I am saved." 00:00:22.22\00:00:25.65 So, there's millions of people out there that have 00:00:25.69\00:00:29.36 this false security. 00:00:29.39\00:00:31.53 It is deadly. 00:00:31.56\00:00:33.40 Doug: Typically, you come to church, 00:00:37.17\00:00:38.53 and you hear the pastor talk about how the lost can be saved, 00:00:38.57\00:00:43.57 how the lost can be saved. 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.14 It's a wonderful message in the Bible, 00:00:45.17\00:00:47.51 and I think everyone here knows that but in case you don't 00:00:47.54\00:00:50.15 and you're lost, I want you to know you can be saved. 00:00:50.18\00:00:54.82 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save 00:00:54.85\00:00:57.52 that which is lost." 00:00:57.55\00:00:58.92 Jesus comes to save the lost. 00:00:58.95\00:01:01.39 John 3:17, "God did not send His Son into the world to condemn 00:01:01.42\00:01:05.29 the world, but through Him the world might be saved." 00:01:05.33\00:01:09.83 1 Timothy 1:15, "This is a faithful saying and worthy of 00:01:09.86\00:01:13.13 all acceptance that Jesus Christ came into the world," 00:01:13.17\00:01:15.84 for what reason? 00:01:15.87\00:01:17.64 "To save sinners." 00:01:17.67\00:01:19.54 Jesus comes to save the lost. 00:01:19.57\00:01:21.38 But our message isn't today that Jesus can save the lost. 00:01:21.41\00:01:25.85 That's part of the message. 00:01:25.88\00:01:28.08 The question we want to address today is, 00:01:28.12\00:01:30.22 Can saved be lost? 00:01:30.25\00:01:32.95 That's a very important question because whether you know it 00:01:32.99\00:01:36.36 or not, there are a lot of dangerous doctrines that are out 00:01:36.39\00:01:41.20 in the world. 00:01:41.23\00:01:42.83 Among Protestants, about 30% of Protestants believe 00:01:42.86\00:01:46.13 in predestination. 00:01:46.17\00:01:49.10 They actually believe in the-- it's, you know, 00:01:49.14\00:01:52.57 Calvinist or Reformed theology. 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.38 You've heard the expression, "Once saved, always saved." 00:01:55.41\00:01:58.51 Now, that's really a package of different beliefs. 00:01:58.55\00:02:00.98 And don't misunderstand, Calvin was a great reformer. 00:02:01.02\00:02:04.45 He was a tremendous theologian. 00:02:04.49\00:02:07.32 He wrote the book "Institutes of the Christian Religion" 00:02:07.36\00:02:09.82 when he was in his 20's. 00:02:09.86\00:02:11.16 He had an incredible mind, and he contributed a great deal. 00:02:11.19\00:02:14.00 But some things, they were coming out of such darkness 00:02:14.03\00:02:17.00 I believe that he misunderstood, that can be dangerous. 00:02:17.03\00:02:20.97 The idea that once you're saved, you can't be lost is, 00:02:21.00\00:02:26.01 I think, a dangerous belief. 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.71 Another part of that is the idea that Jesus's death on the cross 00:02:27.74\00:02:31.95 wasn't to save everybody, but he only shed enough blood 00:02:31.98\00:02:35.38 and only suffered enough for those he knew would be saved, 00:02:35.42\00:02:38.25 better known as the elect. 00:02:38.29\00:02:40.52 And then, the third, which I find the most egregious of all, 00:02:40.56\00:02:44.69 is the idea that God has predetermined who he's gonna 00:02:44.73\00:02:49.63 save and there are others that he has deemed he created 00:02:49.66\00:02:53.34 to be lost, and nobody really has any choice. 00:02:53.37\00:02:57.71 It's all only based on God's choice. 00:02:57.74\00:03:01.31 So, this fatalistic idea, it's almost like Hinduism 00:03:01.34\00:03:04.78 that's just, you know, "you are what you are, 00:03:04.81\00:03:06.45 you can't change your circumstances, 00:03:06.48\00:03:07.78 or you don't have a choice," I believe flies in the face 00:03:07.82\00:03:10.65 of what the Bible says when Joshua said, 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.46 'Choose ye this day who you will serve." 00:03:13.49\00:03:16.36 We very much do have a choice and we very much 00:03:16.39\00:03:18.73 do have responsibility. 00:03:18.76\00:03:20.60 And the choices we make every day do lend themselves 00:03:20.63\00:03:23.53 towards our ultimate destiny. 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.97 So, for any who might be fuzzy on the subject, 00:03:27.00\00:03:30.01 let's just make it clear what the Bible teaches. 00:03:30.04\00:03:35.41 And so, I've just got to the heart of the question, 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.55 can the saved be lost? 00:03:37.58\00:03:39.55 And there's other things we're gonna talk about in the process. 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.48 Now, you might think, well, as long as you're sincere, 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.25 it doesn't matter what you believe. 00:03:45.29\00:03:47.92 Wrong. 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.92 The Bible tells us Matthew 7:21, "Not everyone that says to me, 00:03:49.96\00:03:53.73 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.40 but he that does the will of my Father in heaven." 00:03:56.43\00:03:59.57 Now, my friends that believe once saved, 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.04 always saved, they sort of believe that once you're saved, 00:04:01.07\00:04:03.97 you get a new heart. 00:04:04.01\00:04:05.64 You're born again. 00:04:05.67\00:04:06.98 God said, "You know, I will never lose any that come to me." 00:04:07.01\00:04:09.38 And there's some key verses they have, 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.25 I don't want to undermine there are some verses that not 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.85 rightly placed or in the wrong context, it can confuse you. 00:04:13.88\00:04:18.49 They say, "So once I am saved, it doesn't matter what I do. 00:04:18.52\00:04:21.36 I could, you know, turn from the Lord and go back to the world 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.86 and the sin like the devil, but God's promised I am saved 00:04:23.89\00:04:27.03 and I'm gonna be there." 00:04:27.10\00:04:28.80 And Pastor Ross and I hear it all the time when people call 00:04:28.83\00:04:30.80 in with Bible questions. 00:04:30.83\00:04:32.13 They say, "Well, I was saved back when I was nine years old. 00:04:32.17\00:04:35.64 I gave my heart to the Lord." 00:04:35.67\00:04:36.97 They say, "I haven't been walking with the Lord 00:04:37.01\00:04:38.81 for 20 years now, and I've got this drinking problem. 00:04:38.84\00:04:41.38 And I'm having an affair, and I want to know--" 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.61 And we're going, "Brother, you are not saved." 00:04:43.65\00:04:45.21 "Oh, I was saved. I was saved." 00:04:45.25\00:04:47.65 We're going, "No, you're not. 00:04:47.68\00:04:49.82 'Cause Jesus said, you'll know them by their fruit. 00:04:49.85\00:04:52.59 So, there's millions of people out there that have this 00:04:52.62\00:04:56.16 false security that is deadly. 00:04:56.19\00:05:00.33 That's as bad as having a defibrillator 00:05:00.36\00:05:02.33 with a dead battery. 00:05:02.36\00:05:04.43 You know what I mean? 00:05:04.47\00:05:05.80 Clear. 00:05:05.83\00:05:07.14 Wait, nothing's happening. 00:05:07.17\00:05:08.77 Wouldn't that be a bad time to find out there's no power? 00:05:08.80\00:05:12.44 And so, this is what's gonna happen. 00:05:12.47\00:05:14.98 "Many will say to me in that day," 00:05:15.01\00:05:16.88 what day's he talking about?" 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.71 The day of the Lord, the great judgment day. 00:05:18.75\00:05:20.38 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, 00:05:20.42\00:05:23.25 and cast out devils in your name, 00:05:23.28\00:05:25.29 and done many wonderful works in your name?' 00:05:25.32\00:05:27.26 And I'll declare to them, 'I never knew you 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.62 depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'" 00:05:29.66\00:05:34.56 So, it doesn't matter what a profession is if a person's 00:05:34.56\00:05:37.43 practicing lawlessness, then are they really converted? 00:05:37.47\00:05:43.27 Is the question. 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.14 Well, I want to first do this in sequence. 00:05:45.17\00:05:46.91 Let's address the big question that I started with, did Jesus, 00:05:46.94\00:05:50.01 in his sacrifice, only die for the elect, 00:05:50.05\00:05:54.82 a certain group, or did he die for everybody? 00:05:54.85\00:05:58.02 2 Corinthians 5:15, "And he died for all, 00:05:59.22\00:06:04.49 that those who live should no longer live for themselves, 00:06:04.53\00:06:07.46 but for him who died for them." 00:06:07.50\00:06:09.93 John 1:29, "The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming 00:06:09.96\00:06:13.70 and he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.30 that takes away the sin of the elect." 00:06:15.34\00:06:18.31 Is that what he said? 00:06:18.34\00:06:19.64 The sin of who? The whole world. 00:06:19.67\00:06:22.54 First John 2:2, "And he himself is the appropriation 00:06:22.58\00:06:26.21 for our sins, and not ours only but for the whole world." 00:06:26.25\00:06:30.85 I mean, if God wants to say the whole world, 00:06:30.89\00:06:33.32 if that was inadequate, what other words would he use? 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.32 The whole, whole world. 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.96 What else could he say? 00:06:37.99\00:06:39.33 He's trying to make it clear for everybody. 00:06:39.36\00:06:40.83 He's not talking about this planet and the dirt. 00:06:40.86\00:06:43.13 He's talking about the people. 00:06:43.16\00:06:44.90 So now, is salvation available to everybody? 00:06:44.93\00:06:48.07 That's the other question. 00:06:48.10\00:06:49.54 They say, "No, he didn't die for all. 00:06:49.57\00:06:51.24 It's just available for the elect." 00:06:51.27\00:06:53.88 Romans 5:18, "Therefore, as through one man's offense, 00:06:53.91\00:06:58.61 judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, 00:06:58.65\00:07:02.35 even so through one man's righteousness, 00:07:02.38\00:07:04.82 at one man's righteous act, Jesus's sacrifice, the free gift 00:07:04.85\00:07:09.46 came to all men, resulting in justification of life." 00:07:09.49\00:07:14.10 Romans 10:12, "For there is no distinction between Jew 00:07:14.13\00:07:18.17 and Greek, for the same Lord is over all is rich 00:07:18.20\00:07:22.07 to all who call upon Him. 00:07:22.10\00:07:24.81 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 00:07:24.84\00:07:27.71 Is that clear? 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.38 Anybody who calls on the name of the Lord. 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.31 Now, some Calvinists will take that verse, 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.78 all you gotta do is call on the name of the Lord 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.55 and you're saved. 00:07:35.58\00:07:37.22 So, you pray, you call on the Lord, 00:07:37.25\00:07:39.69 you're saved and then go on and live the way you want. 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.76 That's not what that verse is saying. 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.39 Calling on the Lord means those who have a life 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.13 of calling upon God. 00:07:45.16\00:07:47.46 And so, it's an ongoing behavior. 00:07:47.50\00:07:50.60 1 Timothy 2, verse 3 and 4, "For this is good and acceptable in 00:07:50.63\00:07:55.27 the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved." 00:07:55.30\00:08:00.61 It's not just a few elect that are gonna be saved. 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.91 He doesn't want anyone to be lost. 00:08:02.94\00:08:05.15 So, this idea that God said, "Well, you know, I've gotta-- 00:08:05.18\00:08:08.65 I've gotta make some sinners out there." 00:08:08.68\00:08:10.69 Or I've heard people say, "Well, you know, Jesus said, 00:08:10.72\00:08:14.16 I'm saving the the apostles, except for Judas, 00:08:14.19\00:08:17.29 'cause somebody had to be the fall guy, 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.89 that the prophecies might be fulfilled." 00:08:19.93\00:08:21.43 So, Judas had no choice. 00:08:21.46\00:08:23.70 No, Jesus-- God knew he would do it, 00:08:23.73\00:08:26.07 but he did it because of his choice. 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.50 Or you read the verse where it says, 00:08:29.54\00:08:31.54 "And God hardened Pharaoh's heart." 00:08:31.57\00:08:34.24 So, God is looking down from heaven he's going, 00:08:34.28\00:08:36.18 "Let me see, who will I save? 00:08:36.21\00:08:37.98 Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, you can be the Pharaoh, 00:08:38.01\00:08:40.58 I'm gonna harden your heart. 00:08:40.62\00:08:41.92 No matter what happens, you are not gonna repent 00:08:41.95\00:08:43.89 because I'm not giving you the capacity to repent. 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.09 You're just gonna be lost because it makes for good story 00:08:46.12\00:08:50.49 so Pharaoh, you're lost, so I'm hardening your heart." 00:08:50.53\00:08:53.66 Keep reading, you gotta compare Scripture with Scripture. 00:08:53.70\00:08:56.06 You'll find it says many more times, 00:08:56.10\00:08:58.17 "Pharaoh hardened his heart." 00:08:58.20\00:09:02.14 See, it's the way that God hardened Pharaoh's heart 00:09:02.17\00:09:05.27 it's simply saying that the circumstances that God sent, 00:09:05.31\00:09:08.11 because Pharaoh was proud, it hardened him. 00:09:08.14\00:09:11.51 It's like someone said one time, "The sun can shine on wax, 00:09:11.55\00:09:16.62 and it will melt it. 00:09:16.65\00:09:18.02 The sun can shine on clay and it will harden it." 00:09:18.05\00:09:21.22 It's the same sun, it's shining on different substance. 00:09:21.26\00:09:26.56 So, if a person has a proud heart, 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.63 the circumstances that might humble one king like David or 00:09:28.66\00:09:32.87 Manasseh, they humbled themself, when the circumstances came, 00:09:32.90\00:09:36.04 will harden somebody like the pharaoh. 00:09:36.07\00:09:39.71 And so, it really is, what is the substance? 00:09:39.74\00:09:43.11 Does that make sense? 00:09:43.14\00:09:44.91 John 3:16, Who knows that on? 00:09:44.95\00:09:47.95 "That whosoever believes in Him might not perish, 00:09:47.98\00:09:51.49 but have everlasting life." 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.89 Go to 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning 00:09:53.92\00:09:56.99 His promise, as some men count slackness." 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.49 Talking about, why is it taking them so long to come back? 00:09:59.53\00:10:02.03 So, he hasn't forgotten his promise. 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.37 "But he's longsuffering toward us, 00:10:03.40\00:10:05.47 not willing that any should perish." 00:10:05.50\00:10:09.20 And so, yeah, there's a battle between good and evil. 00:10:09.24\00:10:11.81 It is not God's will that innocent people suffer. 00:10:11.84\00:10:15.54 It's not God's will that the devil rebelled. 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.28 None of the evil is God's will. 00:10:18.31\00:10:20.42 If you want to know God's will, you look in Genesis, 00:10:20.45\00:10:22.75 chapter 1 and 2, and you see a perfect paradise 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.95 with creatures made in his image, completely happy. 00:10:25.99\00:10:29.62 They're living in bliss, everything is good, 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.56 good, very good. 00:10:31.59\00:10:32.89 That's God's will. 00:10:32.93\00:10:34.36 When the devil came in and he brought the sin, 00:10:34.40\00:10:36.10 that's not his will. 00:10:36.13\00:10:37.77 He doesn't want you to perish, which is why he sent Jesus 00:10:37.80\00:10:40.37 so you have an option. 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.10 But he can't force love and he can't change your heart. 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.41 That's something we must do. 00:10:45.44\00:10:47.41 That leads us to the big question, 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.48 once saved, always saved? 00:10:50.51\00:10:52.11 Once a person is saved, can they then be lost? 00:10:52.15\00:10:55.88 Now, I'll tell you why this doctrine developed, 00:10:55.92\00:11:01.26 and there are two extremes. 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.86 Who wants an experience where you come to Jesus to be saved, 00:11:03.89\00:11:07.60 but you just never feel you're good enough. 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.63 And every time you think a bad thought, 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.27 or do a wrong thing, you say, "Now I'm lost. 00:11:11.30\00:11:12.97 I'm sorry, Lord. 00:11:13.00\00:11:14.30 Now, I'm saved. 00:11:14.34\00:11:15.64 Oh, but what if I do something wrong, now I'm lost. 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.07 Now I'm saved, now--" Repent, confess, 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.14 repent, confess, sin, repent, committed sin, 00:11:19.17\00:11:21.18 and you're going back and forth and it's like, 00:11:21.21\00:11:23.28 you can go crazy like that. 00:11:23.31\00:11:25.08 You have no assurance. 00:11:25.11\00:11:27.48 So, theologians who said, "Does God want us to always be living, 00:11:27.52\00:11:32.02 and wondering, and hoping, that we might be saved 00:11:32.05\00:11:35.12 and always in doubt." 00:11:35.16\00:11:36.93 You're miserable 'cause you're just always wondering, 00:11:36.96\00:11:38.49 "Did I do something wrong?" 00:11:38.53\00:11:39.83 And there's no peace, there's no assurance. 00:11:39.86\00:11:42.16 And they said that that can't be the answer so it must be 00:11:42.20\00:11:44.90 that once you are saved, you can't be lost. 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.37 That's the only way you would have that assurance 00:11:47.40\00:11:49.34 and that security. 00:11:49.37\00:11:51.71 They call it eternal security, is one of the names 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.28 for once saved, always saved. 00:11:54.31\00:11:56.48 Well, that's the extreme solution. 00:11:56.51\00:11:59.55 That's also the other problem, the idea, 00:11:59.58\00:12:01.68 "Okay, I'm saved now, I can do whatever I want." 00:12:01.72\00:12:04.25 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends, in just a moment, 00:12:06.09\00:12:08.26 we're going to return for the rest of today's presentation. 00:12:08.29\00:12:11.26 You know, the power of choice is an amazing gift from God, 00:12:11.29\00:12:14.56 but when a person is saved, do they choose God 00:12:14.56\00:12:17.83 or does he choose them? 00:12:17.87\00:12:20.24 And once a person is saved, do they still have the freedom 00:12:20.27\00:12:23.64 to reverse that decision? 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.91 Well, this is probably one of the most deeply discussed 00:12:25.94\00:12:28.74 concepts in the Bible. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.95 But if we're confused about what really constitutes 00:12:30.98\00:12:33.42 true salvation, well, that could be the most expensive mistake 00:12:33.45\00:12:37.45 we ever make. 00:12:37.49\00:12:39.22 Fortunately, you don't have to be confused about the good news. 00:12:39.25\00:12:43.26 Amazing Facts would like to send you a special gift called, 00:12:43.29\00:12:46.33 "Can a saved man choose to be lost?" 00:12:46.36\00:12:49.46 This is a short but very insightful book 00:12:49.50\00:12:52.10 for anyone who has questions about the once saved, 00:12:52.13\00:12:55.04 always saved teaching that's now exploding through 00:12:55.07\00:12:57.61 the Christian church. 00:12:57.64\00:12:59.14 It'll help you to find clarity and lasting meaning for 00:12:59.17\00:13:01.81 your life, while inspiring you with the goodness 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.91 and the fairness of God's kingdom. 00:13:04.95\00:13:06.68 So, don't wait, friend. 00:13:06.72\00:13:08.15 To get your free copy, call the number on the screen and ask 00:13:08.18\00:13:10.72 for offer number 112, or visit the web address. 00:13:10.75\00:13:14.46 And after you read this incredible resource, 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.49 make sure and share it with a friend. 00:13:16.52\00:13:18.99 Well, let's return to today's presentation and learn 00:13:19.03\00:13:21.30 some more amazing facts from the Word of God. 00:13:21.33\00:13:24.33 Doug: "No matter what I do, I have peace, I'm saved, 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.97 but don't you dare tell me otherwise 00:13:29.00\00:13:30.44 'cause you're gonna shake me. 00:13:30.47\00:13:31.81 You're gonna take away my peace and my security." 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.14 And so, that's the other extreme. 00:13:34.18\00:13:36.54 Now, you know, I have a lot of Baptist friends believe 00:13:36.58\00:13:38.48 in eternal security, and they're very godly people. 00:13:38.51\00:13:41.35 They don't try to exploit it, but I've also preached 00:13:41.38\00:13:44.62 in some Baptist churches where people said, 00:13:44.65\00:13:46.29 "You better not go along with a sermon 'cause 00:13:46.32\00:13:48.29 the football game starts at 12." 00:13:48.32\00:13:50.99 And so, you know, you and I saw them gathering outside 00:13:51.03\00:13:54.56 and smoking right after church, and then go home 00:13:54.60\00:13:57.37 and drink beer and watch football. 00:13:57.40\00:13:58.93 And they say, "Yeah, I was saved at 12 years old, 00:13:58.97\00:14:00.84 I gave my heart to the Lord." 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.94 But they're not living for God. 00:14:02.97\00:14:05.27 And so, you've got these two extremes of people 00:14:05.31\00:14:07.14 that are constantly in fear. 00:14:07.18\00:14:09.84 They're always looking at their works. 00:14:09.88\00:14:12.28 And you got the other group that they're they say, 00:14:12.31\00:14:14.65 "Once I was saved and I'm saved by faith, 00:14:14.68\00:14:16.18 it doesn't matter what I do." 00:14:16.22\00:14:18.89 Now, I want to make it clear, we are saved entirely 00:14:18.92\00:14:20.96 by grace through faith. 00:14:20.99\00:14:22.29 We are not saved by works, but that is not a license 00:14:22.32\00:14:25.33 to live a life of sin. 00:14:25.36\00:14:26.70 So, I'm just gonna tell you straight up, yes, 00:14:26.73\00:14:28.96 if you are not continuing to daily walk in the Lord, 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.83 you can lose that assurance and you can lose eternal life. 00:14:31.87\00:14:36.87 Let me give you some verses. 00:14:36.91\00:14:38.94 Galatians 5, verse 4, "You have become estranged from Christ, 00:14:38.97\00:14:43.75 you who attempt to be justified by the law; 00:14:43.78\00:14:46.21 you have fallen from grace." 00:14:46.25\00:14:48.18 Now, no matter what you think about grace and the law there, 00:14:48.22\00:14:50.25 Paul says grace-- these are people, 00:14:50.29\00:14:52.35 he's writing to the church in Galatians. 00:14:52.39\00:14:53.79 You can fall from it. 00:14:53.82\00:14:55.19 Now if you've fallen from grace, are you saved? 00:14:55.22\00:14:56.66 If you're only saved by grace and you've fallen from grace, 00:14:56.69\00:14:58.66 are you still saved? 00:14:58.69\00:15:00.06 No. 00:15:00.10\00:15:01.56 So, Paul said it. 00:15:01.60\00:15:02.90 Mark 13:13 Jesus said, "He that endures 00:15:02.93\00:15:06.00 to the end will be saved." 00:15:06.03\00:15:10.51 So, when do you finally know? 00:15:10.54\00:15:12.84 At the end. 00:15:12.87\00:15:14.24 You've got to continue enduring. 00:15:14.28\00:15:16.31 Now, that doesn't mean you can't have peace that you're saved. 00:15:16.34\00:15:19.95 And I'll explain that because the word "saved" 00:15:19.98\00:15:21.72 is used different ways. 00:15:21.75\00:15:23.85 Paul said, 1 Corinthians 9:27, "But I keep my body under 00:15:23.89\00:15:27.82 and I bring it into subjection, lest, that by any means 00:15:27.86\00:15:31.06 when I preach to others, I myself should be a castaway." 00:15:31.09\00:15:34.10 Paul was saying, "I need to continually bring 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.80 my body into subjection." 00:15:36.83\00:15:38.87 Paul said, "I die daily." 00:15:38.90\00:15:40.40 Now if once you're saved, you're always saved, 00:15:40.44\00:15:42.07 why would you need to die daily? 00:15:42.10\00:15:44.11 But Paul said, "Daily I must deny myself." 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.81 Jesus said, "Whoever takes up his cross 00:15:46.84\00:15:48.14 daily denies himself and follows me." 00:15:48.18\00:15:51.68 Those are the terms of Jesus, "Daily take up your cross, 00:15:51.71\00:15:54.28 deny yourself, follow me." 00:15:54.32\00:15:56.69 And if you should cease to daily have that ongoing relationship, 00:15:56.72\00:15:59.52 you're--it's dangerous. 00:15:59.55\00:16:02.72 Hebrews 10:26, "If we sin willfully," 00:16:02.76\00:16:06.16 and that there means if we continue to live a life of sin, 00:16:06.19\00:16:09.13 doesn't mean if you once sin. 00:16:09.16\00:16:12.33 "But if we sin willfully after we've received the knowledge of 00:16:12.37\00:16:15.30 the truth," all right, so he's talking right now to somebody. 00:16:15.34\00:16:17.67 "They received the knowledge of the truth." 00:16:17.71\00:16:20.54 But they turn from it for willful, ongoing sin. 00:16:20.58\00:16:24.45 "There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 00:16:24.48\00:16:26.75 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment 00:16:26.78\00:16:29.25 and fiery indignation that will devour the adversaries." 00:16:29.28\00:16:33.15 Go--same chapter, Hebrews 10:35, "Therefore do not cast away 00:16:33.19\00:16:39.19 your confidence, which has a great reward. 00:16:39.23\00:16:42.23 For you need endurance." 00:16:42.26\00:16:45.83 He that endures will be saved. 00:16:45.87\00:16:47.37 "So that after you've done the will of God, 00:16:47.40\00:16:49.60 you may receive the promise." 00:16:49.64\00:16:52.81 "So, what in the world is going on here, Pastor Doug, 00:16:52.84\00:16:55.38 can we have any peace?" 00:16:55.41\00:16:58.75 The secret to the Christian life is you've got to keep moving. 00:16:58.78\00:17:03.02 A lot of Christians think you come to the Lord, 00:17:03.05\00:17:04.85 you say a prayer, that is done with now. 00:17:04.89\00:17:07.69 You come to the Lord and you are saved from your past sins, 00:17:07.72\00:17:11.89 you are justified, that is true. 00:17:11.93\00:17:15.23 You are saved by grace and justified when you come 00:17:15.26\00:17:18.63 to the Lord. 00:17:18.67\00:17:19.97 When you get off your knees after you've asked them 00:17:20.00\00:17:21.34 to forgive your sins, you have salvation, of justification. 00:17:21.37\00:17:25.14 But you have not been saved yet from the power of sin 00:17:25.17\00:17:28.98 in the world. 00:17:29.01\00:17:30.31 The devil is gonna be there tempting you. 00:17:30.35\00:17:32.91 And so, you continually day by day, 00:17:32.95\00:17:34.92 you've got the freedom to choose. 00:17:34.95\00:17:37.72 And we are encouraged all through the Scriptures 00:17:37.75\00:17:40.12 to continue choosing God. 00:17:40.16\00:17:42.76 But can we have peace? 00:17:42.79\00:17:45.13 Where does the word "confidence"come from? 00:17:45.16\00:17:48.96 When you say con means with, fidelity or fidence means faith, 00:17:49.00\00:17:55.14 with faith. 00:17:55.17\00:17:56.50 He who believes and is baptized will be saved. 00:17:56.84\00:18:00.54 Can you have security? 00:18:00.58\00:18:04.21 If you believe. 00:18:04.25\00:18:05.91 John 3:36, "He who believes in Son has everlasting life." 00:18:05.95\00:18:10.89 Now, isn't that a good promise? 00:18:10.92\00:18:12.75 What does it mean to believe? 00:18:12.79\00:18:14.96 That's a big question. 00:18:14.99\00:18:16.69 Some people think that means just believe that he exists 00:18:16.73\00:18:19.53 or believe that he died, believe that he lived, 00:18:19.56\00:18:21.63 believe that he rose. 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.00 All those things I just mentioned, 00:18:23.03\00:18:24.47 does the devil believe all of those? 00:18:24.50\00:18:26.84 Does the devil believe that God lives? 00:18:26.87\00:18:29.47 He knows it better than you, used to see him in his glory. 00:18:29.50\00:18:32.34 Does the devil know that Jesus came to earth? 00:18:32.37\00:18:34.64 Does he know that he died for our sins? 00:18:34.68\00:18:36.34 Does he know that he rose again? 00:18:36.38\00:18:38.81 He does. He knows all that. 00:18:38.85\00:18:40.15 He even knows he loves you. 00:18:40.18\00:18:41.65 It's not gonna save him. 00:18:41.68\00:18:44.62 It's a kind of belief where it means the word "believe" means 00:18:44.65\00:18:47.92 to be live. 00:18:47.96\00:18:49.96 The word believe means to be live. 00:18:49.99\00:18:51.86 It means to live in something. 00:18:51.89\00:18:54.56 It's not just the mental assent 'cause James said 00:18:54.56\00:18:56.80 the devils believe like that. 00:18:56.83\00:18:58.97 It means saying, "I'm willing to do your will, Lord." 00:18:59.00\00:19:05.04 You know, the reason that it's important to understand 00:19:05.07\00:19:08.28 that God can give us power not only to justify us, 00:19:08.31\00:19:13.68 but he can give us power to save us from the power of temptation 00:19:13.72\00:19:17.35 and sin, is when you know that God will do his part, 00:19:17.39\00:19:22.16 you have more security. 00:19:22.19\00:19:24.56 What is righteousness by faith? 00:19:24.59\00:19:27.10 When you believe that God hears your prayer for forgiveness, 00:19:29.06\00:19:32.60 and you are justified, and you believe that the moment 00:19:32.63\00:19:34.57 you prayed, that he forgives all your past sins, 00:19:34.60\00:19:37.11 and he gives you power, and he is gonna begin creating 00:19:37.14\00:19:39.31 a new heart in you, that gives you confidence that, 00:19:39.34\00:19:43.95 "Hey, I've got eternal life." 00:19:43.98\00:19:46.21 If you have eternal life, how will that motivate you 00:19:46.25\00:19:48.92 to be different? 00:19:48.95\00:19:50.49 If you know that God says, "I am the author and the finisher of 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.29 your faith, I will stay with you if you continue to turn to me. 00:19:53.32\00:19:56.22 You may fall, but turn right back to me," 00:19:56.26\00:19:59.29 and see if he doesn't grow you. 00:19:59.33\00:20:01.80 That should give you confidence. 00:20:01.83\00:20:03.77 I remember reading when they were building the 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.20 Golden Gate Bridge, at first they had no safety precautions, 00:20:05.23\00:20:09.77 and 23 men slipped and fell to their deaths in the water below. 00:20:09.80\00:20:15.98 Finally, they thought, "You know, we need to do something," 00:20:16.01\00:20:18.48 'cause it was in the early stages. 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.58 They'd already lost 23 men, and a guy named Strauss helped 00:20:20.62\00:20:24.22 develop, he was an engineer, a net that was spread 00:20:24.25\00:20:28.86 all the way across. 00:20:28.89\00:20:30.19 They'd never had a safety device like this on a big project. 00:20:30.23\00:20:33.03 They built a net at $100,000. 00:20:33.06\00:20:34.96 And for us, it would be like $10 million today, 00:20:35.00\00:20:37.47 that went across the entire span. 00:20:37.50\00:20:40.57 You know what they discovered after they put 00:20:40.60\00:20:42.04 the net under there? 00:20:42.07\00:20:43.61 First of all, the net saved like 19 men. 00:20:43.64\00:20:45.67 But the other thing they noticed was once the net showed up, 00:20:45.71\00:20:48.98 the men, because of their confidence, 00:20:49.01\00:20:52.48 were a lot braver and the work went a lot faster, 00:20:52.51\00:20:56.02 and it was a lot more successful because the men had security. 00:20:56.05\00:21:00.19 Now, do you hear what I'm saying? 00:21:00.22\00:21:02.12 Because you cannot say, "Once saved, always saved," 00:21:02.16\00:21:04.86 doesn't mean you cannot have security in your relationship 00:21:04.89\00:21:07.60 with the Lord. 00:21:07.66\00:21:09.46 You've just gotta be careful about being presumption. 00:21:09.50\00:21:11.80 I've used this illustration before. 00:21:11.83\00:21:13.60 Karen and I got married. 00:21:13.64\00:21:15.57 We've actually got witnesses to the wedding today. 00:21:15.60\00:21:17.67 You make very restrictive vows. 00:21:17.71\00:21:21.04 You promise to keep yourself only unto that other person, 00:21:21.08\00:21:24.81 and we love each other. 00:21:24.85\00:21:26.15 We made those promises. 00:21:26.18\00:21:29.42 Now, if I want to, I could break that promise tomorrow. 00:21:29.45\00:21:32.65 I could break it today. 00:21:32.69\00:21:34.39 I am free. 00:21:34.42\00:21:36.12 I never have, God willing I never will. 00:21:36.16\00:21:40.23 I don't worry about it. 00:21:40.26\00:21:41.90 I don't worry about her because when you've got love and faith, 00:21:41.93\00:21:46.70 you can have confidence. 00:21:46.74\00:21:48.87 But that doesn't mean we don't have the freedom. 00:21:48.90\00:21:53.07 See what I'm saying? 00:21:53.11\00:21:54.64 And so, this is how it is in our relationship with the Lord. 00:21:54.68\00:21:57.55 He loves you. He accepts you. 00:21:57.58\00:22:00.05 He adopts you, and he'll never let go of you. 00:22:00.08\00:22:02.22 But you can let go of him. 00:22:02.25\00:22:03.72 His love for years non-failing. 00:22:03.75\00:22:05.52 Life and death cannot separate you from his love. 00:22:05.55\00:22:08.29 My Calvinist friends say, "That means you can't be lost." 00:22:08.32\00:22:10.26 No, it means he will not stop loving you, 00:22:10.29\00:22:13.36 but you are still free 'cause you can't force love. 00:22:13.40\00:22:16.40 The idea once God saves someone he takes away their freedom, 00:22:16.43\00:22:19.00 what does that mean, you're a robot now? 00:22:19.03\00:22:21.87 That's not loving anymore. 00:22:21.90\00:22:24.41 "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest you fall." 00:22:24.44\00:22:28.71 So, you want to have confidence, but you don't want 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.45 to have arrogance. 00:22:31.48\00:22:33.65 You need to have faith, but be careful. 00:22:33.68\00:22:35.72 Again, Hebrews 4:1, "Therefore since a promise remains 00:22:35.75\00:22:38.35 of entering his rest, let us fear lest any of us 00:22:38.39\00:22:41.79 seem to come short of it." 00:22:41.82\00:22:43.49 We need to be God-fearing and yet have peace. 00:22:43.53\00:22:47.03 See, there's a balance here in the Christian life. 00:22:47.03\00:22:49.86 Romans 10:13, 00:22:49.90\00:22:51.67 "Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." 00:22:51.70\00:22:55.50 And if we are calling on God, he promises to save us, 00:22:55.54\00:22:58.47 but we need to press on. 00:22:58.51\00:23:01.11 Revelation 3:5, "He who overcomes will be clothed 00:23:01.14\00:23:04.05 in white raiment," again, he's speaking to the church, 00:23:04.08\00:23:07.38 "and I will not blot his name from the Book of Life." 00:23:07.42\00:23:11.09 Now, why would Jesus even say that unless it was possible 00:23:11.12\00:23:14.16 for a name to be taken from the Book of Life? 00:23:14.19\00:23:16.62 If your name, once put in the Book of Life, 00:23:16.66\00:23:18.59 could never be taken out, why would he say that? 00:23:18.63\00:23:21.40 Matter of fact, Exodus 33, didn't expect me 00:23:21.43\00:23:24.37 to go to the Old Testament. 00:23:24.40\00:23:25.70 Exodus 32, verse 33, "And the Lord said to Moses, 00:23:25.73\00:23:29.97 'Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out 00:23:30.01\00:23:33.01 of my book.'" 00:23:33.04\00:23:34.64 So, even in the Old Testament, 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.24 this is what Jesus is referring to here in Revelation 3, 00:23:36.28\00:23:38.91 God's enters a person in his book, 00:23:38.95\00:23:41.75 when you come to Christ and you're justified, 00:23:41.78\00:23:43.59 you're saved, your name is entered in the Book of Life, 00:23:43.62\00:23:46.25 but then you must press on through sanctification 00:23:46.29\00:23:49.06 and faith, and you have the victory, amen? 00:23:49.09\00:23:53.70 So, he doesn't want us to live in fear. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.86 1 John 3:18, "There is no fear in love. 00:23:55.90\00:23:58.60 The perfect love casts out fear." 00:23:58.63\00:24:01.90 God has promised in Hebrews 13, verse 5, 00:24:01.94\00:24:04.31 "I will never leave you or forsake you." 00:24:04.34\00:24:06.98 "Being confident," Philippians 1:6, 00:24:07.01\00:24:09.14 "Of this very thing, he that has begun a good work 00:24:09.18\00:24:11.71 and you will complete it." 00:24:11.75\00:24:13.05 God gives you so many promises not to be discouraged, 00:24:13.08\00:24:15.65 not to think he doesn't want to save you. 00:24:15.68\00:24:17.25 He's desperate to save every one of us, 00:24:17.29\00:24:19.89 but you need to cooperate. 00:24:19.92\00:24:21.89 Don't--there's two ditches you can fall in, 00:24:21.92\00:24:24.36 one is get discouraged and say, "I'm never gonna make it," 00:24:24.39\00:24:26.39 the others say, "Once I'm saved, I can't be lost." 00:24:26.43\00:24:28.56 You need to be mature and biblical 00:24:28.60\00:24:31.97 about what it means to be saved. 00:24:32.00\00:24:34.64 So, God wants us to have some assurance, doesn't he? 00:24:34.67\00:24:36.97 He doesn't want us to live in fear. 00:24:37.01\00:24:39.41 Ezekiel chapter 33. 00:24:39.44\00:24:42.04 He says in verse 12, "Therefore, O son of man, 00:24:42.08\00:24:44.61 say to the children of your people, 00:24:44.65\00:24:46.48 'The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him 00:24:46.51\00:24:50.19 in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness 00:24:50.22\00:24:53.56 of the wicked, it will not-- he will not fall because of it 00:24:53.59\00:24:56.42 in the day of his--he turns from his wickedness; 00:24:56.46\00:24:59.36 nor shall the right just be able to live because 00:24:59.39\00:25:01.73 of his righteousness and the day that he sins." 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.63 That's pretty clear. 00:25:04.67\00:25:06.00 "When I say to the righteous that he will surely live, 00:25:06.03\00:25:08.20 but he trusts in his own righteousness 00:25:08.24\00:25:11.41 and he commits iniquity," this is describing the 00:25:11.44\00:25:13.58 "Once saved, always saved" people. 00:25:13.61\00:25:15.64 He says to the righteous, "You'll live, I've saved you. 00:25:15.68\00:25:17.48 You're forgiven." 00:25:17.51\00:25:18.81 "But he trusts in his own righteousness and commits 00:25:18.85\00:25:20.88 iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; 00:25:20.92\00:25:24.02 but because of the iniquity that he has committed, 00:25:24.05\00:25:25.82 he shall die. 00:25:25.85\00:25:27.16 Again, when I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' 00:25:27.19\00:25:30.09 if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, 00:25:30.13\00:25:33.86 if the wicked restores the pledge, 00:25:33.90\00:25:35.70 gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes 00:25:35.73\00:25:38.13 of life without committing iniquity, 00:25:38.17\00:25:40.47 he shall surely live; he will not die. 00:25:40.50\00:25:43.41 None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered 00:25:43.44\00:25:46.21 against him; he shall surely live." 00:25:46.24\00:25:48.91 God is telling us he' covering the two extremes, 00:25:48.94\00:25:52.15 right, and that wonder is he's saying, 00:25:52.18\00:25:53.88 "Look, if you follow me, you can live." 00:25:53.92\00:25:56.75 Now, we're saved by his grace because if we're gonna get 00:25:56.79\00:25:58.92 what we deserve, we're all doomed, right? 00:25:58.95\00:26:01.86 Penalty for sin is death, none of us has hope. 00:26:01.89\00:26:03.73 So, if anyone makes it, it's grace for everyone. 00:26:03.76\00:26:06.70 But when you are saved by grace and you accept that, 00:26:06.73\00:26:10.33 embrace that by faith, the Bible says we should walk 00:26:10.37\00:26:13.34 in a newness of life, amen?
