01:02 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
01:03 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry.
01:09 Doug Batchelor: It was first called Salem, a small town
01:12 ruled by a king named Melchizedek about 1900 BC.
01:16 Today, Jerusalem is believed to be one of the most hotly
01:20 contested pieces of real estate in the world.
01:23 It's considered a holy place by Jews, Catholics,
01:26 Protestants, Muslims, and others.
01:29 The city has been destroyed through war
01:31 and rebuilt 27 times.
01:35 The amazing irony is that the word "Jerusalem,"
01:37 pronounced Jeru-Shalom, means city of peace.
01:42 You know, the Bible teaches that God's people are on a pilgrimage
01:45 following Jesus to the new Jerusalem.
01:48 You can read in Hebrews 11:16, "But now they desire
01:52 a better country, that is, a heavenly country.
01:55 Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God,
01:58 because he has prepared for them a city."
02:01 Today, we're going to do something special.
02:03 We're going to join some friends in old Jerusalem and hear
02:06 a message about walking with Jesus to the new Jerusalem.
02:15 Doug: I'm very thankful to be here with you.
02:17 And I appreciate so much all the work and preparation our friends
02:21 from the TBN studios have done here in Jerusalem.
02:24 And we praise God for this beautiful location, where we can
02:28 just absorb the blessings of being here in the Promised Land.
02:32 How many of you have never been in Jerusalem until this trip?
02:36 Quite a few, isn't this exciting?
02:39 One of my favorite stories is in this message we call
02:42 "Back to Jerusalem."
02:44 I thought that would be appropriate.
02:46 And you only find it in one gospel.
02:47 It's in the Gospel of Luke chapter 24, last chapter.
02:51 And it begins in verse 13.
02:53 Now, just to give you the background, it takes place
02:56 after that very dreadful and sad afternoon
03:01 where Jesus is crucified.
03:03 Now, it's good news for you and I, but for the disciples,
03:05 it was absolute devastation because they had
03:08 a whole different picture of what the Messiah
03:10 was going to do.
03:12 And when they saw Jesus crucified and dead, and witness
03:15 him being laid in a tomb, all their hopes
03:18 were completely dashed.
03:20 And after spending the Sabbath together in Jerusalem, some of
03:26 the disciples began to migrate back to their hometowns.
03:30 And that's where we pick up our story.
03:32 Luke chapter 24, verse 13, "Now, two of them were traveling
03:36 that same day to a village called Emmaus,
03:39 which is about seven miles from Jerusalem.
03:42 And they talked together of these things that had happened.
03:45 And it was, while they conversed and reasoned,
03:48 that Jesus himself drew near and went with them.
03:52 But their eyes were restrained, that they did not know him."
03:56 Now, as they're walking down the road, they're suddenly joined
04:00 by a stranger that comes alongside of them.
04:03 And that wasn't uncommon, they used to like to travel together
04:06 for safety back then.
04:07 So, they're commiserating with each other
04:09 about the terrible thing that had happened.
04:12 And as they're going, he just kind of walks alongside.
04:14 And he listens for a while, he doesn't reveal who he is.
04:18 And then finally, he can't hold himself back anymore,
04:20 and he says-- they don't know who he is,
04:23 they don't recognize him.
04:24 It says they should not know him, their eyes were restrained.
04:29 And he said, "What kind of conversation is this you have
04:31 one with another as you walk and are sad?"
04:34 Now, what does that tell us right away?
04:36 Does Jesus want us to have a sad walk?
04:40 What does the word "gospel" mean?
04:43 Good news.
04:45 And what does the word "good news" mean?
04:47 Something that's happy, something that's joyful.
04:49 Christians ought to be the happiest people
04:51 in the world, right?
04:53 And so, he basically chastises them and says, "What kind of
04:57 conversation is this as you walk and are sad?"
04:59 Now, don't miss this important point.
05:02 There's a connection between their not knowing him
05:06 and their being sad.
05:08 It says they did not know him and they were sad.
05:11 So, at the end of the story, you're going to see that all
05:13 changes, and you'll figure out what it is that changes it.
05:16 So, they're walking along and he says, "What is this?"
05:19 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, he's mentioned also
05:21 in the book of Acts, "He answered and he said to him,
05:25 'Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?'"
05:27 What a thing to say to Jesus.
05:29 "'And have you not known the things that are happened
05:31 there in these days?'
05:33 And he said, 'What things?'"
05:35 Now, does God ask questions because he doesn't know,
05:37 or does he ask questions 'cause he wants us to think?
05:40 And sometimes he draws us out with our own--his own questions.
05:43 He said to Adam, "Where are you?"
05:45 Well, he knew where Adam was.
05:46 He said to the disciples, "What were you arguing about on your
05:49 way to the upper room?"
05:51 He knew what they were arguing about,
05:53 which of them was greatest.
05:55 And so, Cleopas says, "Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?"
05:59 You know, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, not far away.
06:03 And he was dedicated in Jerusalem.
06:06 He came 12 years old and taught and asked questions
06:09 in the temple.
06:11 He had been teaching and preaching
06:13 for 3 1/2 years in Jerusalem.
06:15 And so, it was a strange thing to ask him.
06:19 And he says, "What things?"
06:21 They said, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet
06:24 mighty in deed and word before God and all the people.
06:27 And how the chief priests and all of our rulers delivered him
06:30 to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
06:33 But we were hoping that he would be the one
06:36 that would deliver Israel."
06:38 Now, what does that mean when they say, "We were hoping"?
06:40 That's past tense, isn't it?
06:42 What had happened to their hope?
06:45 It had been destroyed.
06:48 "And finally Jesus said to them, 'O fools and slow of heart
06:52 to believe that all the prophets have spoken!
06:55 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things
06:57 and entered into his glory?'"
06:59 And notice this, "Beginning at Moses and all the prophets,
07:04 he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures
07:07 the things concerning himself."
07:09 Now, how much of the Bible was written at that point?
07:14 Just the Old Testament.
07:16 And so, what does he do?
07:18 He expounds in all the Scriptures, speaking of
07:20 the Old Testament Scriptures, things concerning himself.
07:23 What are the Scriptures talking about?
07:26 The Old Testament is principally pointing us to Jesus.
07:31 When you read in the Bible about Adam, on the sixth day he goes
07:37 to sleep, his side is opened up, and a wife is born.
07:42 Jesus on the sixth day of the week, hung on the cross,
07:45 he said, "It is finished," he went to sleep, his side
07:48 was opened up, and the church was born.
07:52 When you read in the Bible about Abraham going up the mountain
07:55 with Isaac, and Isaac has the wood on his back, and Isaac
07:58 says, "Father, we've got the--we've got the wood
08:01 and we've got what it takes to make the fire,
08:03 but where is the lamb?"
08:05 And Abraham says, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb."
08:10 Isaac is the son of Abraham, and he's a willing sacrifice
08:14 when they get to the top of the mountain.
08:16 And just before the knife comes down, the angel stops Abraham
08:21 and directs him to a ram who's caught in the--
08:26 in a thicket by a crown of thorns.
08:28 It's a ram with a crown of thorns in a thorn bush.
08:32 He's a type of Christ.
08:34 When you read in the Bible about Samson, who is standing,
08:37 and the last act of his life, he says, "Let me die."
08:42 He stretches out his hands and he brings down
08:44 the temple of Dagon.
08:47 He lays down his life to save God's people from their enemies.
08:50 That is a type of Christ.
08:51 Matter of fact, you can go from cover to cover in the Bible, and
08:54 if you read about Gideon, if you read about any of the prophets,
08:58 if you read about Esther, they're all telling us
09:00 something about Jesus.
09:02 And so, the Bible is an amazing book.
09:05 It says he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things
09:08 concerning himself.
09:09 Now, I'm going to do something I don't often do.
09:11 You name an Old Testament story.
09:15 You can call it out.
09:16 Name an Old Testament character.
09:19 Noah.
09:21 All right, the Bible tells us that Noah found grace,
09:23 we find grace through Jesus, that there was only one
09:26 way to be saved in the days of Noah.
09:28 You had to go through the door.
09:30 Jesus said, "I am the door."
09:31 And it was through going in the side of that ark
09:34 that they found life.
09:36 And the whole world was repopulated
09:38 or recreated through Noah.
09:40 It is through Christ the whole world is repopulated.
09:44 Jesus is in the story of Noah.
09:46 The gospel of salvation is in the story of Noah.
09:49 They are saved through grace.
09:50 Noah found grace.
09:53 I want to give you a chance for more stories, name another one.
09:56 Solomon.
09:58 Solomon is the son of David.
10:00 Jesus is the Son of David.
10:01 Solomon is the king of peace.
10:03 Jesus is the son of peace.
10:04 Solomon is the wisest of those who had ever lived.
10:06 Jesus is the wisest.
10:08 Solomon is the richest, Jesus is the richest.
10:10 Solomon was the king of Jerusalem in its highest glory.
10:14 Jesus is the king of the new Jerusalem in the ultimate glory.
10:18 And you can go on and on and find, you know,
10:22 the examples of Jesus in the story of Solomon.
10:24 There was a battle before Solomon was king.
10:27 Someone tried to take the throne from him.
10:29 And yeah, in the same way there's a battle trying
10:32 to take the throne from Jesus.
10:34 Someone else.
10:36 Daniel, all right, let's say--
10:38 I heard Daniel, young man over here.
10:40 Daniel was never married.
10:42 I won't go into the details, but trust me, he was never married.
10:46 And the Bible tells us that spies followed Daniel around to
10:51 find something wrong with him because the king thought
10:53 to set him over the whole realm.
10:55 And they tried to find some occasion.
10:57 Did spies follow Jesus around?
10:59 The Bible tells us that finally they made a law, they brought
11:03 an accusation against Daniel, saying that he was breaking
11:06 the law of the king.
11:08 It was a false accusation.
11:09 Daniel was willing to die rather than deny
11:11 his relationship with God.
11:13 Jesus, more than anything he said, "Not my will,
11:16 thy will be done."
11:17 God was first.
11:19 Daniel prayed, and then he went to the lion's den.
11:22 Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, which you can see
11:25 not too far away over there on the Mount of Olives.
11:29 Jesus prayed there, and then he went to the cross.
11:32 They took Jesus from the cross, and they put him in a tomb,
11:34 and they sealed it with a government seal.
11:37 But the devil couldn't keep him there.
11:39 Daniel was placed in a tomb, in a hole in the ground full of
11:43 lions, a stone was placed over the mouth, a government seal.
11:48 But Jesus came out alive.
11:50 And the lions, the devil is like a roaring lion, going around
11:53 seeking whom he might devour.
11:55 The lion could not keep Daniel.
11:57 The devil could not keep Jesus, amen?
12:00 I heard some other Bible stories.
12:03 Oh, you're getting excited now.
12:05 Joseph I heard, okay.
12:06 Now I get to pick the ones I like.
12:10 Joseph, oh.
12:12 It's like Paul says, "What shall I more say?"
12:15 For time would fail me to tell you of Joseph.
12:18 Here you have the beloved son of an ancient patriarch.
12:24 God is called the ancient of days.
12:26 And he gives him a special robe.
12:30 The brothers, he comes seeking their welfare.
12:33 The brothers are missing, he comes to seek his lost brothers
12:35 sent by the father.
12:37 Jesus is sent by the Father to come and seek and save the lost.
12:41 They take him, they throw him in a pit.
12:44 Jesus is put in a tomb.
12:47 They sell him as a slave for silver.
12:49 Now, it's true Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver
12:52 and Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
12:54 And you might be thinking, "Pastor Doug, that doesn't fit."
12:56 But you got to keep in mind over 1,000 years go by and there's
12:59 inflation in the price of a slave between the time of Joseph
13:03 and the time of Judas.
13:05 And he goes down to Egypt.
13:07 Did Jesus also go down, spend some time in Egypt?
13:12 And he's betrayed by one of the 12.
13:16 They think it was Simeon that was the ringleader
13:18 and the one that wanted to kill Joseph.
13:21 His brothers finally come seeking bread from him,
13:25 but he doesn't reveal himself to them.
13:28 He speaks through a translator even though he understands
13:30 everything they're saying 'cause he speaks
13:32 perfect Hebrew, Aramaic.
13:34 They don't know that he's hearing everything.
13:36 They don't recognize him.
13:38 The Bible says, "Jesus came unto his own,
13:40 and his own received him not."
13:41 So often we don't recognize him.
13:43 In the story of Emmaus, he's walking right with
13:45 his disciples, and they don't know him.
13:48 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends.
13:50 We'll be back in just a moment with the rest
13:52 of today's presentation.
13:54 No, the Bible never says that Eve ate an apple, nor does it
13:58 say that three wise men came to see Jesus in the manger.
14:02 Neither does the Bible say that God made a devil.
14:06 So, how well do you know your Bible?
14:08 And what does it really say about heaven and hell,
14:11 the origin of the devil, and the Second Coming of Jesus?"

14:55 Let's return now to today's presentation and learn
14:58 some more amazing facts from the Word of God.
15:03 Doug: Here he was, he came unto them as--
15:06 he was their brother, seeking them.
15:08 They thought he was just a shepherd.
15:10 At the end of the story of Joseph, he is the king.
15:12 He's second only to the king.
15:14 They didn't know who he was.
15:16 Jesus is second to the Father.
15:17 They didn't know who he was.
15:19 He indeed is one with God as you know, but I mean,
15:22 he makes himself subjected to the Father.
15:26 Joseph reveals himself to his brothers at a feast.
15:29 He sits down with 12.
15:31 He puts them all out.
15:33 There's a cup in the story that is a test.
15:37 And Jesus says, "Take this cup."
15:39 And it talks about bread at that dinner.
15:41 Jesus says, "There's a cup and there's bread."
15:44 And you know, the first thing that Joseph says when he
15:46 finally--he tests them and he puts his cup in Benjamin's sack,
15:52 and then he has his soldiers arrest him and say,
15:54 "Oh, Benjamin's got to be my slave."
15:56 And he wants to know, have you really learned anything?
15:58 Are you still the jealous, conniving brothers I knew,
16:00 you know, 25, 30 years ago?
16:03 Oh, by the way, when did Jesus begin his ministry?
16:06 He was baptized at 30 years of age.
16:08 When did Joseph go out to rule over Egypt?
16:11 At 30.
16:12 How old was David when he began to reign over Hebron
16:14 and then later Jerusalem?
16:16 Thirty.
16:18 They're types of Christ.
16:20 And so, Joseph says, "I'm going to arrest Benjamin.
16:22 You guys can go home."
16:24 And Judah says, "No, I've offered to lay myself down
16:26 for my brother."
16:28 He comes to Joseph and he pours out his heart.
16:29 He said, "Our father will be brokenhearted
16:32 if we don't come back with his son.
16:34 He loves his son so much.
16:36 And I've told my father that I will be a substitute."
16:40 Now, Judah's from what tribe?
16:42 That's a trick question.
16:44 Who's in Grant's tomb?
16:46 So, Judah of course is the tribe of Judah.
16:48 What tribe does Jesus come from?
16:50 Tribe of Judah.
16:52 Judah intercedes, he offers himself.
16:53 He says to Joseph, "Take me.
16:55 How can I go home and see my father brought down to the
16:58 grave, his grey hairs brought down to the grave with sorrow?"
17:02 Joseph can't take it anymore, he says, "These men have changed.
17:04 They've spent years regretting what they did to me."
17:07 And instead of getting even-- he has the power to get even.
17:10 He has--and they are guilty.
17:13 They were going to kill him, and then they sold him as a slave,
17:16 where he suffered.
17:17 He suffered in prison.
17:19 Was Jesus in prison?
17:20 He forgives them.
17:22 What does Jesus do for us?
17:24 He not only forgives him, he feeds them with bread.
17:28 And he reveals himself to his brothers.
17:30 And I want to get to heaven, I want to see this DVD
17:31 when I get there.
17:33 I want to see the look on their faces when finally he says to
17:37 them--he begins to sob and weep after Joseph reveals himself.
17:42 And they're wondering what's happened to this ruler of Egypt
17:46 that's just having a meltdown.
17:48 And then he sobs out in their language for the first time,
17:51 "I am Joseph."
17:54 Doesn't Jesus say, "I am"?
17:56 And God says, "I am that I am."
17:59 Jesus says, "Before Abraham was, I am."
18:04 And the look on the brother's face when he says,
18:06 "I am Joseph," they must have thought,
18:09 "Oh, it's curtains now."
18:12 But he says, "Is my father yet alive?"
18:16 More than anything, he was brokenhearted
18:18 because of the separation with the father.
18:21 And I love the way the book Genesis ends, when you see
18:23 the father and the son finally meeting, and you hear the news
18:26 of Jacob when he gets the news Joseph lives.
18:30 And his heart stops, and he sees the wagon train full of gifts
18:34 coming from Egypt, then he believes.
18:36 When he saw the gifts, then he believed.
18:38 At Pentecost, people saw the gifts, and then they believe.
18:41 And so, you see the gospel story in Joseph?
18:44 So, Jesus himself, he's walking down the road.
18:48 And as they're going down the road and he's opening
18:50 the Scriptures for them, they are just overwhelmed.
18:53 They're thinking, "'Wow, we've never heard anything like this.
18:56 You mean to tell us that everything that happened
18:58 was part of God's will?'
19:00 And they drew near the village where they were going,
19:02 and he indicated that he would have gone further.
19:05 But they constrained him, they begged him,
19:07 'Please abide with us.'"
19:09 Have you heard that song, "Abide with me,
19:10 for fast falls the eventide"?
19:12 It's based on this verse.
19:14 It's toward evening and the day is far spent.
19:16 He would have kept going, but they asked him in.
19:19 Do you know we need to ask Jesus, don't we?
19:21 Every day, we need to ask him in.
19:23 He'll come, and he will not force himself into your life.
19:26 "And as they come and sit at the table, he took the bread,
19:30 and he blessed it."
19:32 He said that prayer that Malcolm shared with us last night,
19:34 "B'ruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam
19:38 hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz."
19:40 That's I'm sure a corrupt English or American version,
19:42 but he broke the bread, he blessed it.
19:45 And it says when he broke the bread, their eyes were opened,
19:49 and they knew him.
19:52 He was known in the breaking of bread.
19:56 How are we going to know that Jesus is who he says he is?
19:58 It's in the breaking of bread.
20:01 And after he revealed himself, then he disappears 'cause he
20:04 wants them to know him from the bread, not because they see.
20:07 He says, "Blessed are those who believe without seeing."
20:10 They are so excited, they cannot constrain themself.
20:12 They've just walked seven miles downhill to--by the way,
20:15 notice they're going--they're back to Jerusalem down
20:19 to Emmaus, which means hot water.
20:21 They're going from the city of peace to hot water, and Jesus
20:24 saves them from hot water, and they go back
20:26 to the city of peace.
20:28 And it's night now, and they're going uphill.
20:30 But they are happier going uphill now in the dark with
20:35 Jesus, knowing he's alive, than they were going downhill
20:38 in the daytime, thinking they were alone.
20:41 And when they get to the upper room and they say,
20:43 "Jesus is alive, and he's appeared to Simon."
20:46 They can't wait to share these news with them, they said,
20:48 "He was known to us in the breaking of bread."
20:51 As they are talking about Jesus, he stood in their midst.
20:55 Christ said, "Where two or three are gathered in my name,
20:57 I am there among them."
20:59 Do you know as you talk to others about Jesus,
21:01 he draws near?
21:03 When did he draw near to them in the story of Emmaus?
21:05 As they were walking down the road talking about Jesus,
21:07 he drew near.
21:09 Now, they're in the upper room talking about Jesus,
21:11 and he draws near.
21:12 You notice Jesus will be with you when you're gathered
21:14 together with the other believers.
21:16 And he will be with you on the way as you're walking
21:19 down the road.
21:21 He wants you to be witness not only in the upper room, he wants
21:24 you to be a witness--they were sad walking down the road.
21:27 They weren't converting anybody walking down the road.
21:29 Jesus said, "What's this deal, you're so sad?"
21:33 Spurgeon used to teach preachers.
21:35 And he said to the preachers, he said, "When you preach,
21:39 your face ought to reflect the subject you're talking about."
21:44 Said, "If you're talking about heaven, your eyes ought
21:46 to sparkle as you talk about the golden streets, and your face
21:49 should shine as you talk about the pearly gates."
21:52 And he said, "If you happen to be preaching about hell,
21:53 just use your everyday, normal expression."
21:57 Unfortunately, sometimes Christians don't look like
22:02 the gospel is good news.
22:04 And we'd do a lot more to reach people if we were happier
22:07 about what we believe.
22:09 And then they couldn't believe it.
22:11 While they're talking about Jesus, he appears.
22:14 And they were terrified and frightened,
22:15 and thought they saw a ghost.
22:17 Now, I want you to think about this.
22:19 When they went down the road, he was with them, they saw him.
22:23 When he went up the road, he was still with them.
22:26 You can read in the book "Desire of Ages,"
22:28 it says he was with them going up.
22:30 When they entered the upper room,
22:31 he entered invisible with them.
22:33 He didn't break through the door, he didn't go through
22:35 the walls like a ghost.
22:37 He went with them, they just didn't know he was with them
22:40 the whole time.
22:42 How often do we forget that Christ is with us
22:44 wherever we go?
22:46 And then sometimes we're afraid.
22:48 They were terrified, thought he was a spirit.
22:50 And he says, "No, look, I'm not--I'm not a ghost.
22:52 I'm a real and a living God."
22:54 He said, "Peace to you."
22:56 He doesn't want us sad, he wants us to have peace.
22:58 "And they were terrified and frightened.
23:00 He said, 'Why are you troubled?
23:02 And why do doubts arise in your heart?
23:04 Behold my hands and feet.
23:06 It is I myself.
23:07 Handle me and see, for the spirit doesn't have flesh
23:09 and bone as you see that I have.'
23:11 When he said these things, he showed them his hands and his
23:14 feet, while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled.
23:18 He said to them, 'Do you have any food to eat?'
23:20 They gave him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb.
23:23 He took and ate in their presence."
23:25 Said, "Look, I'm not a ghost.
23:27 I'm still the same Jesus."
23:29 In the resurrection, we get glorified bodies,
23:31 but we're still real.
23:33 God made Adam and Eve with a purpose.
23:35 He put them in a garden to eat, and says we're going to plant
23:37 vineyards and eat the fruit of them in heaven.
23:39 We're going to build houses and inhabit them.
23:42 And it tells us it's very real.
23:44 We're not on clouds floating around as, like, chubby cherubs
23:47 shooting arrows to make people fall in love.
23:51 You know, we're doing real things in the new earth.
23:54 And then when he got done eating, he shared a meal
23:56 with them again.
23:58 He said, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was
24:02 still with you, that all things must be fulfilled that are
24:05 written in the law of Moses," all the way from Moses.
24:08 You know, Moses says in Deuteronomy 18,
24:11 "The Lord your God will raise up a prophet unto you like me.
24:15 Him you shall hear."
24:17 Jesus is that prophet like Moses that was raised up.
24:19 He is the great lawgiver.
24:21 "All things written in the law of Moses and the prophets."
24:26 And you know, you go all the way from Moses to Malachi,
24:28 where it says, "Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet.
24:31 Remember ye the law of Moses, my servant."
24:33 It's all talking about Jesus all along the way.
24:37 Jesus is in every line.
24:38 Jesus is in Genesis, he's in Exodus, he's in Leviticus,
24:41 he's in Numbers, he's in Deuteronomy, in Joshua.
24:45 You know the story of Jericho.
24:47 I shared that in Jerusalem last week.
24:49 Joshua is the way you say Jesus in Hebrew, Yeshua.
24:53 He comes, he blows the trumpets, they shout, the city walls fall,
24:58 and only Rahab and her family are saved.
25:00 That's the story of salvation.
25:02 Jesus says, "I'm coming.
25:04 The Lord will descend from heaven with a shout,
25:06 the trump of God.
25:08 The dead in Christ will rise."
25:10 There's a great earthquake, and only those who are in the house
25:13 of Rahab with that red rope, it's a symbol of salvation,
25:15 are saved.
25:17 All these stories you read about in the Old Testament
25:19 are talking about Christ.
25:21 "All things that are written in the law of Moses and the
25:24 prophets and the psalms."
25:26 What did Jesus say in Psalm 22?
25:30 Hanging on the cross.
25:32 Everyone wonders, why did Jesus say, "My God, my God,
25:34 why have you forsaken me?"
25:37 He was quoting from a messianic psalm.
25:40 And you read later in that very psalm, what does it say?
25:42 "They pierced my hands and my feet.
25:45 They gambled for my clothing," the very things that were
25:47 happening right there around the cross.
25:49 He's directing their attention.
25:51 He didn't get discouraged.
25:53 He's quoting like the priest from one of the psalms.
25:56 That was supposed to strengthen their faith.
25:58 It could be the reason the thief on the cross realized
26:00 it was Jesus.
26:01 "All things written in the prophets
26:03 and the psalms concerning me."
26:05 And this is my last verse, "And he opened their understanding,
26:09 that they might comprehend the Scripture."
26:12 Every time Jesus met with them, it says he opened their
26:15 understanding, that they might comprehend the Scripture.
26:18 You know, they went from Jerusalem and they were sad.
26:21 They came back to Jerusalem knowing that Jesus was alive,
26:24 and they were happy.
26:25 We're here on earth.
26:27 Our object is to get to the new Jerusalem.
26:29 We need to know he's real, he's alive.
26:31 How did these disciples know Jesus?
26:34 He was known in the breaking of bread.
26:36 Jesus said, "This is eternal life," John chapter 17,
26:40 "that they might know thee, the only true God,
26:43 and Jesus Christ who you have sent."
