... 00:00:00.63\00:00:01.23 ¤¤¤ 00:01:00.69\00:01:02.32 male announcer: This presentation is brought to you 00:01:02.36\00:01:03.66 by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry. 00:01:03.69\00:01:07.83 Doug Batchelor: It was first called Salem, a small town 00:01:09.40\00:01:11.97 ruled by a king named Melchizedek about 1900 BC. 00:01:12.00\00:01:16.60 Today, Jerusalem is believed to be one of the most hotly 00:01:16.64\00:01:20.11 contested pieces of real estate in the world. 00:01:20.14\00:01:23.51 It's considered a holy place by Jews, Catholics, 00:01:23.55\00:01:26.51 Protestants, Muslims, and others. 00:01:26.55\00:01:29.45 The city has been destroyed through war 00:01:29.48\00:01:31.62 and rebuilt 27 times. 00:01:31.65\00:01:34.99 The amazing irony is that the word "Jerusalem," 00:01:35.02\00:01:37.56 pronounced Jeru-Shalom, means city of peace. 00:01:37.59\00:01:42.46 You know, the Bible teaches that God's people are on a pilgrimage 00:01:42.50\00:01:45.73 following Jesus to the new Jerusalem. 00:01:45.77\00:01:48.90 You can read in Hebrews 11:16, "But now they desire 00:01:48.94\00:01:52.44 a better country, that is, a heavenly country. 00:01:52.47\00:01:55.38 Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, 00:01:55.41\00:01:58.35 because he has prepared for them a city." 00:01:58.38\00:02:01.75 Today, we're going to do something special. 00:02:01.78\00:02:03.65 We're going to join some friends in old Jerusalem and hear 00:02:03.69\00:02:06.82 a message about walking with Jesus to the new Jerusalem. 00:02:06.86\00:02:10.99 Doug: I'm very thankful to be here with you. 00:02:15.00\00:02:17.30 And I appreciate so much all the work and preparation our friends 00:02:17.33\00:02:21.10 from the TBN studios have done here in Jerusalem. 00:02:21.14\00:02:24.11 And we praise God for this beautiful location, where we can 00:02:24.14\00:02:28.31 just absorb the blessings of being here in the Promised Land. 00:02:28.34\00:02:32.81 How many of you have never been in Jerusalem until this trip? 00:02:32.85\00:02:36.28 Quite a few, isn't this exciting? 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.72 One of my favorite stories is in this message we call 00:02:39.75\00:02:42.82 "Back to Jerusalem." 00:02:42.86\00:02:44.59 I thought that would be appropriate. 00:02:44.63\00:02:46.16 And you only find it in one gospel. 00:02:46.19\00:02:47.96 It's in the Gospel of Luke chapter 24, last chapter. 00:02:47.96\00:02:51.83 And it begins in verse 13. 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.64 Now, just to give you the background, it takes place 00:02:53.67\00:02:56.54 after that very dreadful and sad afternoon 00:02:56.57\00:03:01.34 where Jesus is crucified. 00:03:01.38\00:03:03.45 Now, it's good news for you and I, but for the disciples, 00:03:03.48\00:03:05.68 it was absolute devastation because they had 00:03:05.71\00:03:08.38 a whole different picture of what the Messiah 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.35 was going to do. 00:03:10.39\00:03:12.25 And when they saw Jesus crucified and dead, and witness 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.29 him being laid in a tomb, all their hopes 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.03 were completely dashed. 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.56 And after spending the Sabbath together in Jerusalem, some of 00:03:20.60\00:03:26.17 the disciples began to migrate back to their hometowns. 00:03:26.20\00:03:30.24 And that's where we pick up our story. 00:03:30.27\00:03:32.34 Luke chapter 24, verse 13, "Now, two of them were traveling 00:03:32.37\00:03:36.71 that same day to a village called Emmaus, 00:03:36.75\00:03:39.78 which is about seven miles from Jerusalem. 00:03:39.81\00:03:42.42 And they talked together of these things that had happened. 00:03:42.45\00:03:45.55 And it was, while they conversed and reasoned, 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.42 that Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 00:03:48.46\00:03:52.16 But their eyes were restrained, that they did not know him." 00:03:52.19\00:03:56.16 Now, as they're walking down the road, they're suddenly joined 00:03:56.20\00:04:00.34 by a stranger that comes alongside of them. 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.87 And that wasn't uncommon, they used to like to travel together 00:04:03.91\00:04:06.44 for safety back then. 00:04:06.47\00:04:07.78 So, they're commiserating with each other 00:04:07.81\00:04:09.84 about the terrible thing that had happened. 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.18 And as they're going, he just kind of walks alongside. 00:04:12.21\00:04:14.85 And he listens for a while, he doesn't reveal who he is. 00:04:14.88\00:04:18.29 And then finally, he can't hold himself back anymore, 00:04:18.32\00:04:20.96 and he says-- they don't know who he is, 00:04:20.99\00:04:22.99 they don't recognize him. 00:04:23.02\00:04:24.73 It says they should not know him, their eyes were restrained. 00:04:24.76\00:04:29.06 And he said, "What kind of conversation is this you have 00:04:29.10\00:04:31.37 one with another as you walk and are sad?" 00:04:31.40\00:04:34.37 Now, what does that tell us right away? 00:04:34.40\00:04:36.60 Does Jesus want us to have a sad walk? 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.54 What does the word "gospel" mean? 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.21 Good news. 00:04:43.24\00:04:45.11 And what does the word "good news" mean? 00:04:45.15\00:04:47.38 Something that's happy, something that's joyful. 00:04:47.42\00:04:49.82 Christians ought to be the happiest people 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.39 in the world, right? 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.19 And so, he basically chastises them and says, "What kind of 00:04:53.22\00:04:57.13 conversation is this as you walk and are sad?" 00:04:57.16\00:04:59.79 Now, don't miss this important point. 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.16 There's a connection between their not knowing him 00:05:02.20\00:05:06.17 and their being sad. 00:05:06.20\00:05:08.20 It says they did not know him and they were sad. 00:05:08.24\00:05:11.54 So, at the end of the story, you're going to see that all 00:05:11.57\00:05:13.91 changes, and you'll figure out what it is that changes it. 00:05:13.94\00:05:16.28 So, they're walking along and he says, "What is this?" 00:05:16.31\00:05:19.65 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, he's mentioned also 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.95 in the book of Acts, "He answered and he said to him, 00:05:21.98\00:05:25.35 'Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?'" 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.36 What a thing to say to Jesus. 00:05:27.39\00:05:29.29 "'And have you not known the things that are happened 00:05:29.32\00:05:31.26 there in these days?' 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.23 And he said, 'What things?'" 00:05:33.26\00:05:35.23 Now, does God ask questions because he doesn't know, 00:05:35.26\00:05:37.47 or does he ask questions 'cause he wants us to think? 00:05:37.50\00:05:40.20 And sometimes he draws us out with our own--his own questions. 00:05:40.24\00:05:43.07 He said to Adam, "Where are you?" 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.04 Well, he knew where Adam was. 00:05:45.07\00:05:46.78 He said to the disciples, "What were you arguing about on your 00:05:46.81\00:05:49.74 way to the upper room?" 00:05:49.78\00:05:51.48 He knew what they were arguing about, 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.42 which of them was greatest. 00:05:53.45\00:05:55.28 And so, Cleopas says, "Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?" 00:05:55.32\00:05:59.49 You know, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, not far away. 00:05:59.52\00:06:03.12 And he was dedicated in Jerusalem. 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.59 He came 12 years old and taught and asked questions 00:06:06.63\00:06:09.83 in the temple. 00:06:09.86\00:06:11.83 He had been teaching and preaching 00:06:11.87\00:06:13.60 for 3 1/2 years in Jerusalem. 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.57 And so, it was a strange thing to ask him. 00:06:15.60\00:06:19.71 And he says, "What things?" 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.68 They said, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.48 mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.95 And how the chief priests and all of our rulers delivered him 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.75 to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 00:06:30.79\00:06:33.89 But we were hoping that he would be the one 00:06:33.92\00:06:36.52 that would deliver Israel." 00:06:36.56\00:06:38.26 Now, what does that mean when they say, "We were hoping"? 00:06:38.29\00:06:40.63 That's past tense, isn't it? 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.93 What had happened to their hope? 00:06:42.96\00:06:45.57 It had been destroyed. 00:06:45.60\00:06:48.04 "And finally Jesus said to them, 'O fools and slow of heart 00:06:48.07\00:06:52.44 to believe that all the prophets have spoken! 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.98 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things 00:06:55.01\00:06:57.45 and entered into his glory?'" 00:06:57.48\00:06:59.41 And notice this, "Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, 00:06:59.45\00:07:04.05 he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures 00:07:04.09\00:07:07.22 the things concerning himself." 00:07:07.26\00:07:09.86 Now, how much of the Bible was written at that point? 00:07:09.89\00:07:14.73 Just the Old Testament. 00:07:14.73\00:07:16.53 And so, what does he do? 00:07:16.56\00:07:18.23 He expounds in all the Scriptures, speaking of 00:07:18.27\00:07:20.00 the Old Testament Scriptures, things concerning himself. 00:07:20.04\00:07:23.47 What are the Scriptures talking about? 00:07:23.51\00:07:26.44 The Old Testament is principally pointing us to Jesus. 00:07:26.47\00:07:31.05 When you read in the Bible about Adam, on the sixth day he goes 00:07:31.08\00:07:37.09 to sleep, his side is opened up, and a wife is born. 00:07:37.12\00:07:42.69 Jesus on the sixth day of the week, hung on the cross, 00:07:42.72\00:07:45.96 he said, "It is finished," he went to sleep, his side 00:07:45.99\00:07:48.76 was opened up, and the church was born. 00:07:48.80\00:07:52.00 When you read in the Bible about Abraham going up the mountain 00:07:52.03\00:07:55.30 with Isaac, and Isaac has the wood on his back, and Isaac 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.71 says, "Father, we've got the--we've got the wood 00:07:58.74\00:08:01.68 and we've got what it takes to make the fire, 00:08:01.71\00:08:03.61 but where is the lamb?" 00:08:03.65\00:08:05.61 And Abraham says, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb." 00:08:05.65\00:08:10.49 Isaac is the son of Abraham, and he's a willing sacrifice 00:08:10.52\00:08:14.56 when they get to the top of the mountain. 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.76 And just before the knife comes down, the angel stops Abraham 00:08:16.79\00:08:21.10 and directs him to a ram who's caught in the-- 00:08:21.13\00:08:26.37 in a thicket by a crown of thorns. 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.67 It's a ram with a crown of thorns in a thorn bush. 00:08:28.70\00:08:32.31 He's a type of Christ. 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.24 When you read in the Bible about Samson, who is standing, 00:08:34.28\00:08:37.31 and the last act of his life, he says, "Let me die." 00:08:37.35\00:08:42.08 He stretches out his hands and he brings down 00:08:42.12\00:08:44.95 the temple of Dagon. 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.06 He lays down his life to save God's people from their enemies. 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.03 That is a type of Christ. 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.86 Matter of fact, you can go from cover to cover in the Bible, and 00:08:51.89\00:08:54.46 if you read about Gideon, if you read about any of the prophets, 00:08:54.50\00:08:58.00 if you read about Esther, they're all telling us 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.47 something about Jesus. 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.84 And so, the Bible is an amazing book. 00:09:02.87\00:09:05.11 It says he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things 00:09:05.14\00:09:07.98 concerning himself. 00:09:08.01\00:09:09.81 Now, I'm going to do something I don't often do. 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.75 You name an Old Testament story. 00:09:11.78\00:09:15.02 You can call it out. 00:09:15.05\00:09:16.62 Name an Old Testament character. 00:09:16.65\00:09:19.42 Noah. 00:09:19.45\00:09:21.06 All right, the Bible tells us that Noah found grace, 00:09:21.09\00:09:23.56 we find grace through Jesus, that there was only one 00:09:23.59\00:09:26.53 way to be saved in the days of Noah. 00:09:26.56\00:09:28.66 You had to go through the door. 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.17 Jesus said, "I am the door." 00:09:30.20\00:09:31.80 And it was through going in the side of that ark 00:09:31.83\00:09:34.37 that they found life. 00:09:34.40\00:09:36.54 And the whole world was repopulated 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.77 or recreated through Noah. 00:09:38.81\00:09:40.81 It is through Christ the whole world is repopulated. 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.45 Jesus is in the story of Noah. 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.45 The gospel of salvation is in the story of Noah. 00:09:46.48\00:09:49.08 They are saved through grace. 00:09:49.12\00:09:50.79 Noah found grace. 00:09:50.82\00:09:53.09 I want to give you a chance for more stories, name another one. 00:09:53.12\00:09:56.09 Solomon. 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.03 Solomon is the son of David. 00:09:58.06\00:09:59.96 Jesus is the Son of David. 00:10:00.00\00:10:01.63 Solomon is the king of peace. 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.10 Jesus is the son of peace. 00:10:03.13\00:10:04.73 Solomon is the wisest of those who had ever lived. 00:10:04.77\00:10:06.70 Jesus is the wisest. 00:10:06.74\00:10:08.74 Solomon is the richest, Jesus is the richest. 00:10:08.77\00:10:10.94 Solomon was the king of Jerusalem in its highest glory. 00:10:10.97\00:10:14.71 Jesus is the king of the new Jerusalem in the ultimate glory. 00:10:14.74\00:10:18.81 And you can go on and on and find, you know, 00:10:18.85\00:10:22.22 the examples of Jesus in the story of Solomon. 00:10:22.25\00:10:24.59 There was a battle before Solomon was king. 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.06 Someone tried to take the throne from him. 00:10:27.09\00:10:29.76 And yeah, in the same way there's a battle trying 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.53 to take the throne from Jesus. 00:10:32.56\00:10:34.36 Someone else. 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.63 Daniel, all right, let's say-- 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.30 I heard Daniel, young man over here. 00:10:38.33\00:10:40.60 Daniel was never married. 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.67 I won't go into the details, but trust me, he was never married. 00:10:42.70\00:10:46.47 And the Bible tells us that spies followed Daniel around to 00:10:46.51\00:10:51.11 find something wrong with him because the king thought 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.18 to set him over the whole realm. 00:10:53.21\00:10:55.35 And they tried to find some occasion. 00:10:55.38\00:10:57.09 Did spies follow Jesus around? 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.65 The Bible tells us that finally they made a law, they brought 00:10:59.69\00:11:03.56 an accusation against Daniel, saying that he was breaking 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.23 the law of the king. 00:11:06.26\00:11:07.96 It was a false accusation. 00:11:08.00\00:11:09.73 Daniel was willing to die rather than deny 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.80 his relationship with God. 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.50 Jesus, more than anything he said, "Not my will, 00:11:13.54\00:11:16.14 thy will be done." 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.87 God was first. 00:11:17.91\00:11:19.81 Daniel prayed, and then he went to the lion's den. 00:11:19.84\00:11:22.18 Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, which you can see 00:11:22.21\00:11:24.98 not too far away over there on the Mount of Olives. 00:11:25.01\00:11:29.52 Jesus prayed there, and then he went to the cross. 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.69 They took Jesus from the cross, and they put him in a tomb, 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.96 and they sealed it with a government seal. 00:11:34.99\00:11:37.66 But the devil couldn't keep him there. 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.73 Daniel was placed in a tomb, in a hole in the ground full of 00:11:39.76\00:11:42.96 lions, a stone was placed over the mouth, a government seal. 00:11:43.00\00:11:48.40 But Jesus came out alive. 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.41 And the lions, the devil is like a roaring lion, going around 00:11:50.44\00:11:53.14 seeking whom he might devour. 00:11:53.17\00:11:55.11 The lion could not keep Daniel. 00:11:55.14\00:11:57.41 The devil could not keep Jesus, amen? 00:11:57.45\00:12:00.92 I heard some other Bible stories. 00:12:00.95\00:12:03.25 Oh, you're getting excited now. 00:12:03.28\00:12:05.09 Joseph I heard, okay. 00:12:05.12\00:12:06.69 Now I get to pick the ones I like. 00:12:06.72\00:12:10.39 Joseph, oh. 00:12:10.43\00:12:12.56 It's like Paul says, "What shall I more say?" 00:12:12.59\00:12:15.83 For time would fail me to tell you of Joseph. 00:12:15.86\00:12:18.93 Here you have the beloved son of an ancient patriarch. 00:12:18.97\00:12:24.04 God is called the ancient of days. 00:12:24.07\00:12:26.44 And he gives him a special robe. 00:12:26.47\00:12:30.15 The brothers, he comes seeking their welfare. 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.98 The brothers are missing, he comes to seek his lost brothers 00:12:33.01\00:12:35.92 sent by the father. 00:12:35.95\00:12:37.92 Jesus is sent by the Father to come and seek and save the lost. 00:12:37.95\00:12:41.22 They take him, they throw him in a pit. 00:12:41.26\00:12:44.83 Jesus is put in a tomb. 00:12:44.86\00:12:47.00 They sell him as a slave for silver. 00:12:47.03\00:12:49.60 Now, it's true Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver 00:12:49.63\00:12:52.33 and Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. 00:12:52.37\00:12:54.54 And you might be thinking, "Pastor Doug, that doesn't fit." 00:12:54.57\00:12:56.87 But you got to keep in mind over 1,000 years go by and there's 00:12:56.91\00:12:59.17 inflation in the price of a slave between the time of Joseph 00:12:59.21\00:13:03.21 and the time of Judas. 00:13:03.24\00:13:05.85 And he goes down to Egypt. 00:13:05.88\00:13:07.88 Did Jesus also go down, spend some time in Egypt? 00:13:07.92\00:13:12.19 And he's betrayed by one of the 12. 00:13:12.22\00:13:16.26 They think it was Simeon that was the ringleader 00:13:16.29\00:13:18.69 and the one that wanted to kill Joseph. 00:13:18.73\00:13:21.66 His brothers finally come seeking bread from him, 00:13:21.70\00:13:25.40 but he doesn't reveal himself to them. 00:13:25.43\00:13:28.20 He speaks through a translator even though he understands 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.47 everything they're saying 'cause he speaks 00:13:30.51\00:13:32.51 perfect Hebrew, Aramaic. 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.48 They don't know that he's hearing everything. 00:13:34.51\00:13:36.48 They don't recognize him. 00:13:36.51\00:13:38.15 The Bible says, "Jesus came unto his own, 00:13:38.18\00:13:40.05 and his own received him not." 00:13:40.08\00:13:41.78 So often we don't recognize him. 00:13:41.82\00:13:43.75 In the story of Emmaus, he's walking right with 00:13:43.79\00:13:45.69 his disciples, and they don't know him. 00:13:45.72\00:13:48.92 Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends. 00:13:48.96\00:13:50.69 We'll be back in just a moment with the rest 00:13:50.73\00:13:52.43 of today's presentation. 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.30 No, the Bible never says that Eve ate an apple, nor does it 00:13:54.30\00:13:58.37 say that three wise men came to see Jesus in the manger. 00:13:58.40\00:14:02.67 Neither does the Bible say that God made a devil. 00:14:02.70\00:14:06.21 So, how well do you know your Bible? 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.68 And what does it really say about heaven and hell, 00:14:08.71\00:14:11.68 the origin of the devil, and the Second Coming of Jesus?" 00:14:11.71\00:14:15.05 There are so many common misunderstandings 00:14:15.08\00:14:17.22 learn 00:14:55.66\00:14:58.46 some more amazing facts from the Word of God. 00:14:58.49\00:15:03.03 Doug: Here he was, he came unto them as-- 00:15:03.06\00:15:06.23 he was their brother, seeking them. 00:15:06.27\00:15:08.30 They thought he was just a shepherd. 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.24 At the end of the story of Joseph, he is the king. 00:15:10.27\00:15:12.37 He's second only to the king. 00:15:12.41\00:15:14.24 They didn't know who he was. 00:15:14.28\00:15:16.18 Jesus is second to the Father. 00:15:16.21\00:15:17.95 They didn't know who he was. 00:15:17.98\00:15:19.95 He indeed is one with God as you know, but I mean, 00:15:19.98\00:15:22.52 he makes himself subjected to the Father. 00:15:22.55\00:15:26.22 Joseph reveals himself to his brothers at a feast. 00:15:26.25\00:15:29.59 He sits down with 12. 00:15:29.62\00:15:31.96 He puts them all out. 00:15:31.99\00:15:33.86 There's a cup in the story that is a test. 00:15:33.90\00:15:37.33 And Jesus says, "Take this cup." 00:15:37.37\00:15:39.60 And it talks about bread at that dinner. 00:15:39.63\00:15:41.94 Jesus says, "There's a cup and there's bread." 00:15:41.97\00:15:44.31 And you know, the first thing that Joseph says when he 00:15:44.34\00:15:46.21 finally--he tests them and he puts his cup in Benjamin's sack, 00:15:46.24\00:15:52.18 and then he has his soldiers arrest him and say, 00:15:52.21\00:15:54.32 "Oh, Benjamin's got to be my slave." 00:15:54.35\00:15:56.18 And he wants to know, have you really learned anything? 00:15:56.22\00:15:58.09 Are you still the jealous, conniving brothers I knew, 00:15:58.12\00:16:00.92 you know, 25, 30 years ago? 00:16:00.96\00:16:03.43 Oh, by the way, when did Jesus begin his ministry? 00:16:03.46\00:16:06.66 He was baptized at 30 years of age. 00:16:06.70\00:16:08.50 When did Joseph go out to rule over Egypt? 00:16:08.53\00:16:10.97 At 30. 00:16:11.00\00:16:12.67 How old was David when he began to reign over Hebron 00:16:12.70\00:16:14.57 and then later Jerusalem? 00:16:14.60\00:16:16.30 Thirty. 00:16:16.34\00:16:18.24 They're types of Christ. 00:16:18.27\00:16:20.11 And so, Joseph says, "I'm going to arrest Benjamin. 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.41 You guys can go home." 00:16:22.44\00:16:24.35 And Judah says, "No, I've offered to lay myself down 00:16:24.38\00:16:26.48 for my brother." 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.28 He comes to Joseph and he pours out his heart. 00:16:28.32\00:16:29.95 He said, "Our father will be brokenhearted 00:16:29.98\00:16:32.82 if we don't come back with his son. 00:16:32.85\00:16:34.69 He loves his son so much. 00:16:34.72\00:16:36.96 And I've told my father that I will be a substitute." 00:16:36.99\00:16:40.26 Now, Judah's from what tribe? 00:16:40.30\00:16:42.33 That's a trick question. 00:16:42.36\00:16:44.20 Who's in Grant's tomb? 00:16:44.23\00:16:46.80 So, Judah of course is the tribe of Judah. 00:16:46.84\00:16:48.64 What tribe does Jesus come from? 00:16:48.67\00:16:50.64 Tribe of Judah. 00:16:50.67\00:16:52.27 Judah intercedes, he offers himself. 00:16:52.31\00:16:53.91 He says to Joseph, "Take me. 00:16:53.94\00:16:55.61 How can I go home and see my father brought down to the 00:16:55.64\00:16:58.45 grave, his grey hairs brought down to the grave with sorrow?" 00:16:58.48\00:17:02.28 Joseph can't take it anymore, he says, "These men have changed. 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.62 They've spent years regretting what they did to me." 00:17:04.65\00:17:07.46 And instead of getting even-- he has the power to get even. 00:17:07.49\00:17:10.56 He has--and they are guilty. 00:17:10.59\00:17:13.06 They were going to kill him, and then they sold him as a slave, 00:17:13.09\00:17:16.06 where he suffered. 00:17:16.10\00:17:17.50 He suffered in prison. 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.10 Was Jesus in prison? 00:17:19.13\00:17:20.94 He forgives them. 00:17:20.97\00:17:22.44 What does Jesus do for us? 00:17:22.47\00:17:24.37 He not only forgives him, he feeds them with bread. 00:17:24.41\00:17:28.28 And he reveals himself to his brothers. 00:17:28.31\00:17:29.98 And I want to get to heaven, I want to see this DVD 00:17:30.01\00:17:31.71 when I get there. 00:17:31.75\00:17:33.72 I want to see the look on their faces when finally he says to 00:17:33.75\00:17:37.39 them--he begins to sob and weep after Joseph reveals himself. 00:17:37.42\00:17:42.59 And they're wondering what's happened to this ruler of Egypt 00:17:42.62\00:17:46.06 that's just having a meltdown. 00:17:46.09\00:17:48.26 And then he sobs out in their language for the first time, 00:17:48.30\00:17:51.90 "I am Joseph." 00:17:51.93\00:17:54.04 Doesn't Jesus say, "I am"? 00:17:54.07\00:17:56.74 And God says, "I am that I am." 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.71 Jesus says, "Before Abraham was, I am." 00:17:59.74\00:18:04.48 And the look on the brother's face when he says, 00:18:04.51\00:18:06.58 "I am Joseph," they must have thought, 00:18:06.61\00:18:09.05 "Oh, it's curtains now." 00:18:09.08\00:18:12.35 But he says, "Is my father yet alive?" 00:18:12.39\00:18:16.02 More than anything, he was brokenhearted 00:18:16.06\00:18:18.83 because of the separation with the father. 00:18:18.86\00:18:21.03 And I love the way the book Genesis ends, when you see 00:18:21.06\00:18:23.33 the father and the son finally meeting, and you hear the news 00:18:23.37\00:18:26.70 of Jacob when he gets the news Joseph lives. 00:18:26.74\00:18:30.44 And his heart stops, and he sees the wagon train full of gifts 00:18:30.47\00:18:34.28 coming from Egypt, then he believes. 00:18:34.31\00:18:36.54 When he saw the gifts, then he believed. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.58 At Pentecost, people saw the gifts, and then they believe. 00:18:38.61\00:18:41.78 And so, you see the gospel story in Joseph? 00:18:41.82\00:18:44.75 So, Jesus himself, he's walking down the road. 00:18:44.79\00:18:48.49 And as they're going down the road and he's opening 00:18:48.52\00:18:50.63 the Scriptures for them, they are just overwhelmed. 00:18:50.66\00:18:53.93 They're thinking, "'Wow, we've never heard anything like this. 00:18:53.96\00:18:56.73 You mean to tell us that everything that happened 00:18:56.77\00:18:58.63 was part of God's will?' 00:18:58.67\00:19:00.47 And they drew near the village where they were going, 00:19:00.50\00:19:02.90 and he indicated that he would have gone further. 00:19:02.94\00:19:05.57 But they constrained him, they begged him, 00:19:05.61\00:19:07.38 'Please abide with us.'" 00:19:07.41\00:19:09.11 Have you heard that song, "Abide with me, 00:19:09.14\00:19:10.81 for fast falls the eventide"? 00:19:10.85\00:19:12.71 It's based on this verse. 00:19:12.75\00:19:14.42 It's toward evening and the day is far spent. 00:19:14.45\00:19:16.38 He would have kept going, but they asked him in. 00:19:16.42\00:19:19.42 Do you know we need to ask Jesus, don't we? 00:19:19.45\00:19:21.46 Every day, we need to ask him in. 00:19:21.49\00:19:23.49 He'll come, and he will not force himself into your life. 00:19:23.53\00:19:26.66 "And as they come and sit at the table, he took the bread, 00:19:26.70\00:19:30.43 and he blessed it." 00:19:30.47\00:19:32.30 He said that prayer that Malcolm shared with us last night, 00:19:32.33\00:19:34.64 "B'ruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam 00:19:34.67\00:19:38.01 hamotzi lechem min ha-aretz." 00:19:38.04\00:19:40.11 That's I'm sure a corrupt English or American version, 00:19:40.14\00:19:42.91 but he broke the bread, he blessed it. 00:19:42.94\00:19:45.65 And it says when he broke the bread, their eyes were opened, 00:19:45.68\00:19:49.42 and they knew him. 00:19:49.45\00:19:52.65 He was known in the breaking of bread. 00:19:52.69\00:19:55.99 How are we going to know that Jesus is who he says he is? 00:19:56.02\00:19:58.86 It's in the breaking of bread. 00:19:58.89\00:20:01.13 And after he revealed himself, then he disappears 'cause he 00:20:01.16\00:20:04.53 wants them to know him from the bread, not because they see. 00:20:04.57\00:20:07.90 He says, "Blessed are those who believe without seeing." 00:20:07.94\00:20:10.17 They are so excited, they cannot constrain themself. 00:20:10.21\00:20:12.61 They've just walked seven miles downhill to--by the way, 00:20:12.64\00:20:15.54 notice they're going--they're back to Jerusalem down 00:20:15.58\00:20:19.78 to Emmaus, which means hot water. 00:20:19.81\00:20:21.82 They're going from the city of peace to hot water, and Jesus 00:20:21.85\00:20:24.19 saves them from hot water, and they go back 00:20:24.22\00:20:26.49 to the city of peace. 00:20:26.52\00:20:28.59 And it's night now, and they're going uphill. 00:20:28.62\00:20:30.86 But they are happier going uphill now in the dark with 00:20:30.89\00:20:35.50 Jesus, knowing he's alive, than they were going downhill 00:20:35.53\00:20:38.57 in the daytime, thinking they were alone. 00:20:38.60\00:20:41.84 And when they get to the upper room and they say, 00:20:41.87\00:20:43.81 "Jesus is alive, and he's appeared to Simon." 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.34 They can't wait to share these news with them, they said, 00:20:46.37\00:20:48.78 "He was known to us in the breaking of bread." 00:20:48.81\00:20:51.78 As they are talking about Jesus, he stood in their midst. 00:20:51.81\00:20:55.62 Christ said, "Where two or three are gathered in my name, 00:20:55.65\00:20:57.69 I am there among them." 00:20:57.72\00:20:59.72 Do you know as you talk to others about Jesus, 00:20:59.75\00:21:01.42 he draws near? 00:21:01.46\00:21:03.26 When did he draw near to them in the story of Emmaus? 00:21:03.29\00:21:05.46 As they were walking down the road talking about Jesus, 00:21:05.49\00:21:07.40 he drew near. 00:21:07.46\00:21:09.26 Now, they're in the upper room talking about Jesus, 00:21:09.30\00:21:11.40 and he draws near. 00:21:11.43\00:21:12.93 You notice Jesus will be with you when you're gathered 00:21:12.97\00:21:14.74 together with the other believers. 00:21:14.77\00:21:16.91 And he will be with you on the way as you're walking 00:21:16.94\00:21:19.84 down the road. 00:21:19.87\00:21:21.41 He wants you to be witness not only in the upper room, he wants 00:21:21.44\00:21:24.11 you to be a witness--they were sad walking down the road. 00:21:24.15\00:21:27.32 They weren't converting anybody walking down the road. 00:21:27.35\00:21:29.58 Jesus said, "What's this deal, you're so sad?" 00:21:29.62\00:21:33.39 Spurgeon used to teach preachers. 00:21:33.42\00:21:35.72 And he said to the preachers, he said, "When you preach, 00:21:35.76\00:21:39.49 your face ought to reflect the subject you're talking about." 00:21:39.53\00:21:44.57 Said, "If you're talking about heaven, your eyes ought 00:21:44.60\00:21:46.43 to sparkle as you talk about the golden streets, and your face 00:21:46.47\00:21:49.50 should shine as you talk about the pearly gates." 00:21:49.54\00:21:52.04 And he said, "If you happen to be preaching about hell, 00:21:52.07\00:21:53.94 just use your everyday, normal expression." 00:21:53.98\00:21:57.75 Unfortunately, sometimes Christians don't look like 00:21:57.78\00:22:02.18 the gospel is good news. 00:22:02.22\00:22:04.25 And we'd do a lot more to reach people if we were happier 00:22:04.29\00:22:07.26 about what we believe. 00:22:07.29\00:22:09.59 And then they couldn't believe it. 00:22:09.62\00:22:11.29 While they're talking about Jesus, he appears. 00:22:11.33\00:22:14.00 And they were terrified and frightened, 00:22:14.03\00:22:15.86 and thought they saw a ghost. 00:22:15.90\00:22:17.77 Now, I want you to think about this. 00:22:17.80\00:22:19.93 When they went down the road, he was with them, they saw him. 00:22:19.97\00:22:23.30 When he went up the road, he was still with them. 00:22:23.34\00:22:26.57 You can read in the book "Desire of Ages," 00:22:26.61\00:22:28.34 it says he was with them going up. 00:22:28.38\00:22:30.15 When they entered the upper room, 00:22:30.18\00:22:31.68 he entered invisible with them. 00:22:31.71\00:22:33.42 He didn't break through the door, he didn't go through 00:22:33.45\00:22:35.22 the walls like a ghost. 00:22:35.25\00:22:37.72 He went with them, they just didn't know he was with them 00:22:37.75\00:22:40.22 the whole time. 00:22:40.26\00:22:41.99 How often do we forget that Christ is with us 00:22:42.02\00:22:44.86 wherever we go? 00:22:44.89\00:22:46.83 And then sometimes we're afraid. 00:22:46.86\00:22:48.63 They were terrified, thought he was a spirit. 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.47 And he says, "No, look, I'm not--I'm not a ghost. 00:22:50.50\00:22:52.43 I'm a real and a living God." 00:22:52.47\00:22:54.14 He said, "Peace to you." 00:22:54.17\00:22:56.00 He doesn't want us sad, he wants us to have peace. 00:22:56.04\00:22:58.41 "And they were terrified and frightened. 00:22:58.44\00:23:00.41 He said, 'Why are you troubled? 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.38 And why do doubts arise in your heart? 00:23:02.41\00:23:04.28 Behold my hands and feet. 00:23:04.31\00:23:05.98 It is I myself. 00:23:06.01\00:23:07.42 Handle me and see, for the spirit doesn't have flesh 00:23:07.45\00:23:09.38 and bone as you see that I have.' 00:23:09.42\00:23:11.92 When he said these things, he showed them his hands and his 00:23:11.95\00:23:14.46 feet, while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled. 00:23:14.49\00:23:18.23 He said to them, 'Do you have any food to eat?' 00:23:18.26\00:23:20.93 They gave him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. 00:23:20.96\00:23:23.53 He took and ate in their presence." 00:23:23.57\00:23:25.47 Said, "Look, I'm not a ghost. 00:23:25.50\00:23:27.50 I'm still the same Jesus." 00:23:27.54\00:23:29.47 In the resurrection, we get glorified bodies, 00:23:29.50\00:23:31.41 but we're still real. 00:23:31.44\00:23:33.31 God made Adam and Eve with a purpose. 00:23:33.34\00:23:35.14 He put them in a garden to eat, and says we're going to plant 00:23:35.18\00:23:37.61 vineyards and eat the fruit of them in heaven. 00:23:37.65\00:23:39.91 We're going to build houses and inhabit them. 00:23:39.95\00:23:42.75 And it tells us it's very real. 00:23:42.78\00:23:44.82 We're not on clouds floating around as, like, chubby cherubs 00:23:44.85\00:23:47.22 shooting arrows to make people fall in love. 00:23:47.26\00:23:51.33 You know, we're doing real things in the new earth. 00:23:51.36\00:23:54.83 And then when he got done eating, he shared a meal 00:23:54.83\00:23:56.87 with them again. 00:23:56.90\00:23:58.67 He said, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was 00:23:58.70\00:24:02.20 still with you, that all things must be fulfilled that are 00:24:02.24\00:24:05.37 written in the law of Moses," all the way from Moses. 00:24:05.41\00:24:08.84 You know, Moses says in Deuteronomy 18, 00:24:08.88\00:24:11.65 "The Lord your God will raise up a prophet unto you like me. 00:24:11.68\00:24:15.62 Him you shall hear." 00:24:15.65\00:24:17.59 Jesus is that prophet like Moses that was raised up. 00:24:17.62\00:24:19.95 He is the great lawgiver. 00:24:19.99\00:24:21.82 "All things written in the law of Moses and the prophets." 00:24:21.86\00:24:26.26 And you know, you go all the way from Moses to Malachi, 00:24:26.29\00:24:28.30 where it says, "Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet. 00:24:28.33\00:24:31.30 Remember ye the law of Moses, my servant." 00:24:31.33\00:24:33.90 It's all talking about Jesus all along the way. 00:24:33.94\00:24:37.07 Jesus is in every line. 00:24:37.11\00:24:38.84 Jesus is in Genesis, he's in Exodus, he's in Leviticus, 00:24:38.87\00:24:41.44 he's in Numbers, he's in Deuteronomy, in Joshua. 00:24:41.48\00:24:45.28 You know the story of Jericho. 00:24:45.31\00:24:47.52 I shared that in Jerusalem last week. 00:24:47.55\00:24:49.68 Joshua is the way you say Jesus in Hebrew, Yeshua. 00:24:49.72\00:24:53.52 He comes, he blows the trumpets, they shout, the city walls fall, 00:24:53.56\00:24:58.53 and only Rahab and her family are saved. 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.93 That's the story of salvation. 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.66 Jesus says, "I'm coming. 00:25:02.70\00:25:04.57 The Lord will descend from heaven with a shout, 00:25:04.60\00:25:06.57 the trump of God. 00:25:06.60\00:25:08.44 The dead in Christ will rise." 00:25:08.47\00:25:10.21 There's a great earthquake, and only those who are in the house 00:25:10.24\00:25:13.34 of Rahab with that red rope, it's a symbol of salvation, 00:25:13.38\00:25:15.94 are saved. 00:25:15.98\00:25:17.81 All these stories you read about in the Old Testament 00:25:17.85\00:25:19.81 are talking about Christ. 00:25:19.85\00:25:21.92 "All things that are written in the law of Moses and the 00:25:21.95\00:25:24.12 prophets and the psalms." 00:25:24.15\00:25:26.39 What did Jesus say in Psalm 22? 00:25:26.42\00:25:30.36 Hanging on the cross. 00:25:30.39\00:25:32.36 Everyone wonders, why did Jesus say, "My God, my God, 00:25:32.39\00:25:34.73 why have you forsaken me?" 00:25:34.76\00:25:37.07 He was quoting from a messianic psalm. 00:25:37.10\00:25:40.04 And you read later in that very psalm, what does it say? 00:25:40.07\00:25:42.87 "They pierced my hands and my feet. 00:25:42.90\00:25:45.27 They gambled for my clothing," the very things that were 00:25:45.31\00:25:47.48 happening right there around the cross. 00:25:47.51\00:25:49.54 He's directing their attention. 00:25:49.58\00:25:51.31 He didn't get discouraged. 00:25:51.35\00:25:53.28 He's quoting like the priest from one of the psalms. 00:25:53.31\00:25:56.08 That was supposed to strengthen their faith. 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.19 It could be the reason the thief on the cross realized 00:25:58.22\00:26:00.09 it was Jesus. 00:26:00.12\00:26:01.96 "All things written in the prophets 00:26:01.99\00:26:03.83 and the psalms concerning me." 00:26:03.86\00:26:05.56 And this is my last verse, "And he opened their understanding, 00:26:05.59\00:26:09.73 that they might comprehend the Scripture." 00:26:09.76\00:26:12.80 Every time Jesus met with them, it says he opened their 00:26:12.83\00:26:15.90 understanding, that they might comprehend the Scripture. 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.74 You know, they went from Jerusalem and they were sad. 00:26:18.77\00:26:21.54 They came back to Jerusalem knowing that Jesus was alive, 00:26:21.58\00:26:24.18 and they were happy. 00:26:24.21\00:26:25.95 We're here on earth. 00:26:25.98\00:26:27.72 Our object is to get to the new Jerusalem. 00:26:27.75\00:26:29.42 We need to know he's real, he's alive. 00:26:29.45\00:26:31.62 How did these disciples know Jesus? 00:26:31.65\00:26:34.26 He was known in the breaking of bread. 00:26:34.29\00:26:36.89 Jesus said, "This is eternal life," John chapter 17, 00:26:36.93\00:26:40.43 "that they might know thee, the only true God, 00:26:40.46\00:26:43.30 and Jesus Christ who you have sent." 00:26:43.33\00:26:46.70 announcer: Don't forget to request today's 00:26:49.77\00:26:51.57 life-changing free resource. 00:26:51.61\00:26:53.64 Not only can you
