male announcer: This presentation is brought to you 00:00:02.40\00:00:03.70 by the friends of the Amazing Facts Ministry. 00:00:03.83\00:00:06.50 Doug Batchelor: The most scathing rebukes that Jesus 00:00:14.41\00:00:17.18 made, it was not against the publicans and the harlots and 00:00:17.21\00:00:20.55 the sinners. 00:00:20.58\00:00:21.88 It was against false religion. 00:00:21.92\00:00:23.69 How does God see it when we have the facade of religion, but our 00:00:24.09\00:00:29.12 hearts are corrupt? 00:00:29.16\00:00:30.49 Doug: We're living in very interesting times. 00:00:34.30\00:00:36.26 I think it's important that we declare to you the whole counsel 00:00:38.40\00:00:44.14 of God. 00:00:44.17\00:00:45.57 And today would be one of those subjects that could be 00:00:45.61\00:00:48.64 misunderstood unless I give a little preface and explain. 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.81 There are some things in the Bible that are some strong 00:00:52.31\00:00:56.38 statements and we're going to be sharing today some of the 00:00:56.42\00:01:00.96 strongest statements that Jesus made that are given to us as 00:01:00.99\00:01:05.49 warnings in love, but I hope that you'll just take it in the 00:01:05.53\00:01:10.73 spirit that it's given, but it's something that we think need to 00:01:10.77\00:01:13.54 consider because well, eternal life depends on it. 00:01:13.57\00:01:17.54 And so our sermon today is based on an oxymoron and it's called 00:01:18.77\00:01:24.68 "A Sincere Hypocrite." 00:01:24.71\00:01:26.05 Because hypocrisy, of course is the antithesis of sincerity, 00:01:27.82\00:01:31.22 but, you know, the Bible has quite a bit to say 00:01:32.25\00:01:34.49 about hypocrisy. 00:01:34.52\00:01:36.29 And it's something we need to pray that God will help us 00:01:37.13\00:01:40.50 recognize and guard against. 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.43 Now what is hypocrisy? 00:01:43.43\00:01:44.77 Well, hypocrisy comes from a Greek word that really talks 00:01:44.80\00:01:48.97 about the theatre in ancient Greece, even before the time of 00:01:49.00\00:01:52.71 Christ, when actors got out on the stage and they assume 00:01:52.74\00:01:56.34 different parts. 00:01:56.38\00:01:57.68 They had these masks that they put up and one actor might wear 00:01:57.71\00:02:00.28 several different masks. 00:02:00.32\00:02:01.62 At one point he would come out and he'd hold his mask and have 00:02:01.65\00:02:03.49 a big happy face on it. 00:02:03.52\00:02:04.82 You've probably seen some examples of this in art, 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.16 the Greek mask and then when he was angry, he'd have an angry 00:02:07.19\00:02:11.46 face, and all of sudden if the devil should appear he'd pick 00:02:11.49\00:02:14.00 up the devil face. 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.30 And then if there was an angel same actor would then put on the 00:02:15.33\00:02:17.20 angel face. 00:02:17.23\00:02:18.47 And he'd go through his lines, let everyone know when he held 00:02:18.50\00:02:20.77 the angel face. 00:02:20.80\00:02:22.10 This is the angel speaking. 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.47 And so, the idea of one person changing among many different 00:02:23.51\00:02:26.98 masks is where you get this word hypokrites or hypocrite. 00:02:27.01\00:02:31.85 And it's talking about a person who is able to just sort of 00:02:32.51\00:02:35.55 convey something that isn't authentic, isn't really them. 00:02:36.62\00:02:39.82 The practice, here's a hypocrite, the practice of 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.82 professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not really 00:02:42.86\00:02:47.66 hold or possess. 00:02:47.66\00:02:49.13 Falseness, being two faced, play acting, to make a pretense. 00:02:49.50\00:02:57.51 It's found about 40 times in the Bible. 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.37 That's including the word hypocrite and hypocrisy in case 00:03:00.18\00:03:02.54 you do a search. 00:03:03.08\00:03:04.41 You know, I understand on the Italian Riviera that it's very 00:03:04.71\00:03:08.92 desirable if you could have a home facing the Mediterranean. 00:03:08.95\00:03:12.49 Some of the homes are very old and they were not built with 00:03:13.02\00:03:15.86 balconies and everybody wants a balcony on their home, but 00:03:15.89\00:03:19.26 because of the ancient architecture balconies could not 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.80 affordably be added to some of these homes. 00:03:22.83\00:03:26.33 And so what the creative owners did is they got artists to paint 00:03:26.74\00:03:30.07 balconies on their house. 00:03:30.34\00:03:33.11 And so--and to make it look real some of them would even 00:03:34.04\00:03:37.11 paint laundry hanging from their balcony to give it that 00:03:37.15\00:03:41.52 authenticity, but you could never stand on that balcony. 00:03:41.55\00:03:44.95 It was a facade. 00:03:44.99\00:03:46.32 Sometimes Christians paint on our religion and it's not real. 00:03:47.69\00:03:55.76 And we're all at risk, of sometimes being a little 00:03:55.80\00:04:00.10 bit hypocritical. 00:04:00.14\00:04:01.50 How many of you have heard someone say I'm not going to 00:04:01.94\00:04:04.01 church because it's just full of hypocrites. 00:04:04.04\00:04:05.64 You ever heard that before? 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.01 Then you heard it last week. 00:04:07.94\00:04:09.31 And I like to always say you should still come, 00:04:09.91\00:04:11.55 there's always room for one more 00:04:11.58\00:04:13.31 because let's face it, we all sometimes deal 00:04:13.35\00:04:17.95 with being authentic and at the heart of 00:04:17.99\00:04:19.75 what I want to say today, 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.29 in case you miss it or drift off, it's an appeal that we 00:04:21.32\00:04:26.26 should be genuine. 00:04:26.29\00:04:27.66 That a religion must be a heart religion. 00:04:27.96\00:04:30.00 The most scathing rebukes that Jesus made, it was not against 00:04:30.37\00:04:34.77 the publicans and the harlots and the sinners, it was against 00:04:34.80\00:04:38.41 false religion. 00:04:38.44\00:04:39.81 People who are having a pretense of being something that they 00:04:40.18\00:04:44.31 really weren't. 00:04:44.35\00:04:45.68 Now some reasons that people get involved in hypocrisy is they're 00:04:46.15\00:04:50.25 trying to make an impression. 00:04:50.29\00:04:51.79 First of all, it's not wrong to want to make a good impression. 00:04:53.69\00:04:58.99 A lot of you would never be married if you didn't know how 00:04:59.96\00:05:02.10 to try to make a good impression. 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.57 And if people are visiting, we want to make a good impression. 00:05:06.43\00:05:09.97 You want to be positive. 00:05:10.01\00:05:11.31 Jesus said, "Let your good works so shine before men that they 00:05:11.34\00:05:15.34 may glorify your Father in Heaven." 00:05:15.38\00:05:17.28 So why are you making the good impression is the question. 00:05:17.31\00:05:19.78 Is it you're doing it to glorify you or is it to glorify your 00:05:19.98\00:05:23.92 Father in Heaven? 00:05:23.95\00:05:25.32 You know, Jesus made a statement about tombs. 00:05:25.69\00:05:27.89 It was in our Scripture reading. 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.26 It says in Matthew 23, we keep going back to that passage, "Woe 00:05:30.16\00:05:34.20 to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.60 For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.83 beautiful on the outside but inside they're full of dead 00:05:39.87\00:05:43.37 men's bones, and all manner of uncleanness. 00:05:43.41\00:05:47.01 Even so outwardly you appear righteous to men, but inwardly 00:05:47.44\00:05:51.01 you're full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." 00:05:51.05\00:05:52.75 How does God see it when we have the facade of religion but our 00:05:53.05\00:05:58.09 hearts are corrupt? 00:05:58.12\00:05:59.62 Now I should pause, explain when the children of Israel were 00:05:59.65\00:06:04.86 carried off to Babylon because of their idolatry and their 00:06:04.89\00:06:07.50 unfaithfulness, 70 years later, they were able to come back. 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.03 When they came back some of the religious leaders said, "We 00:06:11.73\00:06:14.67 don't want to ever make that mistake again, so God withdraws 00:06:14.70\00:06:17.74 his blessing and we are carried away." 00:06:17.77\00:06:19.84 And so they became very regimented in their religion to 00:06:20.08\00:06:23.61 compel everybody to make sure that they're faithful not only 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.78 was idolatry never a problem again, they had laws about how 00:06:26.82\00:06:30.39 to keep the Sabbath with great precision. 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.62 They had laws about washing before you eat and all the 00:06:32.82\00:06:36.86 ceremonies and the rigors of religion. 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.59 And they kept adding laws. 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.16 And they got to where some of the religious leaders were proud 00:06:40.50\00:06:44.40 of that they were more religious than the other religious leaders 00:06:44.43\00:06:47.27 and it became an Olympic competition. 00:06:47.30\00:06:49.10 And this happened over a couple of hundred years, where they 00:06:50.01\00:06:53.44 developed a sect called the Sadducees. 00:06:53.48\00:06:55.71 Talking about the purified ones. 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.55 And they just took religion to a whole new level and it all 00:06:58.01\00:07:03.15 became external to advertise how pious and holy they were. 00:07:03.18\00:07:07.92 And so, Jesus he spoke out against the scribes and 00:07:08.42\00:07:11.43 the Pharisees. 00:07:11.46\00:07:12.79 And you can read in the first few verses, "Jesus spoke to the 00:07:12.99\00:07:16.43 multitudes and the disciples and he said, 'The scribes and the 00:07:16.46\00:07:20.97 Pharisees sit in Moses' seat,'" they were the religious leaders, 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.91 "therefore, whatever they tell you observe and do but not 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.58 according to their works; for they say and they do not. 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.75 For they bind heavy burdens on men on their shoulders; but they 00:07:31.41\00:07:35.42 themselves will not lift them with one of their fingers. 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.95 All their works they do to be seen by men." 00:07:38.32\00:07:42.46 That pretty much sums. 00:07:42.49\00:07:43.79 It up if your religion is for demonstration of what others 00:07:43.83\00:07:47.60 think it's vain. 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.63 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:07:50.57\00:07:53.64 Verse 14, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:07:54.00\00:07:57.67 Verse 15, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:07:57.71\00:08:01.71 Verse 16, he just says, "Woe to you blind guides." 00:08:02.01\00:08:04.71 You go on to verse 23, "Woe to you scribes and 00:08:05.38\00:08:07.82 Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:08:07.85\00:08:09.28 Verse 25, "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites." 00:08:09.32\00:08:12.19 Verse 27, "Woe to you hypocrites." 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.89 Verse 29, "Woe to you hypocrites." 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.93 Word hypocrite I think is found seven times in this chapter, 00:08:17.19\00:08:20.20 interesting number, and he says, "Woe to you" I think 00:08:20.23\00:08:23.33 eight times. 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.70 This is the strongest language that Jesus speaks even in the 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.27 Sermon on the Mount when he begins preaching, he addresses 00:08:29.30\00:08:33.51 the problem with hypocrisy among the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:08:33.54\00:08:37.58 And so you're going to hear a little bit about the Pharisees 00:08:38.05\00:08:40.18 in the message today. 00:08:40.22\00:08:41.72 If you look in Matthew 23 verse 4 not only does it say, "They 00:08:42.42\00:08:46.25 bind heavy burdens on man." 00:08:46.29\00:08:47.76 It says, "all their works they do to be seen of men. 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.03 They make broad their phylacteries." 00:08:50.36\00:08:52.79 Now the phylactery, if you hear that word, what's a phylactery? 00:08:53.36\00:08:55.53 Moses said, "These words I command you today shall be in 00:08:57.70\00:09:01.90 your heart. 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.24 You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, they will be 00:09:03.27\00:09:05.41 frontlets between your eyes." 00:09:05.44\00:09:06.81 And so, you've probably seen pictures before. 00:09:06.84\00:09:08.14 I think we've got one we're going to put up on 00:09:08.18\00:09:09.61 the screen here. 00:09:09.64\00:09:10.88 You can see around their wrists they'd wrap these leather tongs 00:09:10.91\00:09:13.25 and there would be a piece of Scripture on a box on their 00:09:13.28\00:09:16.08 right hand, and then the on their forehead they'd have a 00:09:16.12\00:09:20.02 little box that had scripture in it. 00:09:20.06\00:09:21.69 No Moses didn't mean and God did not mean for them to take 00:09:22.19\00:09:25.39 elements of Scripture and tie it to their forehead or tie it to 00:09:25.43\00:09:28.40 their hand. 00:09:28.43\00:09:29.90 He meant have it in your head, have it in your actions, and 00:09:29.93\00:09:33.13 have it in your heart. 00:09:33.17\00:09:34.47 Obviously in the heart was a figure of speech, but they took 00:09:34.50\00:09:37.57 it literally. 00:09:37.61\00:09:39.07 And they put these phylacteries. 00:09:39.11\00:09:40.94 They still wear them today, the Orthodox Jews, on their hands 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.35 and on their heads. 00:09:44.65\00:09:46.01 And he said they'd make wide the borders of their garments 'cause 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.35 the priest was told to have a border of blue to show his 00:09:48.38\00:09:51.19 loyalty to the law. 00:09:51.22\00:09:52.52 And so, the priests all have, you will see it in 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.22 illustrations, they had a border of blue. 00:09:54.26\00:09:56.36 Well, if someone had a little border of blue, one priest would 00:09:57.23\00:10:00.23 say his border is wider than my border. 00:10:00.26\00:10:02.73 Well, I'm going to make my wide, my border of blue wider than 00:10:02.76\00:10:06.13 his border. 00:10:06.17\00:10:07.47 And pretty soon they were wearing these dragging around 00:10:07.50\00:10:09.10 long boarders of blue to show I'm more loyal than they are. 00:10:09.14\00:10:12.41 And so all of it began to be sort of a show of who could be 00:10:13.04\00:10:17.41 the most religious. 00:10:17.45\00:10:18.78 "They enlarge the borders of their garments. 00:10:19.61\00:10:21.35 They love the uppermost seats and the feasts, and the chief 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.92 seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the markets, and to 00:10:23.95\00:10:27.52 be call of men, 'Rabbi Rabbi Phd.'" 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.36 And it was all about your position. 00:10:32.43\00:10:34.23 I think it was Spurgeon said, "We should not be proud of face 00:10:35.36\00:10:39.57 or place or race." 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.60 And it was all about their office and they wanted that. 00:10:42.40\00:10:44.84 They're worried about what everyone else thought of them. 00:10:45.17\00:10:47.41 And so it was all outward religion. 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.01 Man looks on the outside. 00:10:50.18\00:10:51.71 God looks on the inside. 00:10:52.28\00:10:53.78 We often live because we're worried about what man sees. 00:10:54.15\00:10:56.69 And we forget about what really matters. 00:10:56.72\00:10:58.22 What does God see? 00:10:58.25\00:10:59.55 Are we genuine? 00:10:59.59\00:11:00.99 I catch myself being a hypocrite. 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.26 I'm just telling you right up front. 00:11:04.49\00:11:05.83 But I'm not terribly ashamed to say that publicly because 00:11:06.59\00:11:09.56 whether you know it or not you are too sometimes. 00:11:09.60\00:11:11.73 But we got to get the victory over that. 00:11:13.40\00:11:14.80 I'm not saying it and saying, "Oh well. 00:11:14.84\00:11:16.57 We're all hypocrites." 00:11:16.60\00:11:17.91 No, we've got really evaluate are we doing things for the 00:11:17.94\00:11:22.58 glory of God? 00:11:22.61\00:11:23.91 Are we worried about what everyone thinks? 00:11:23.95\00:11:25.28 Do we ever put on our religion to try to do is look good? 00:11:25.31\00:11:28.25 Hypocrisy is one of the most dangerous attitudes for 00:11:29.82\00:11:32.22 a Christian. 00:11:32.25\00:11:33.59 Jesus spoke the strongest against it. 00:11:33.62\00:11:35.26 We all sometimes wear masks. 00:11:35.29\00:11:36.89 Somebody once said hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays 00:11:37.43\00:11:41.30 to virtue. 00:11:41.33\00:11:42.63 That's pretty profound when you think about that. 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.60 Oswald Chambers said, "The world is glad for an excuse to ignore 00:11:45.67\00:11:49.60 the gospel message and the hypocrisy of Christians is their 00:11:49.64\00:11:53.64 favorite excuse." 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.11 Now hypocrisy does not just appear in the New Testament, 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.85 because it's a Greek word. 00:11:58.88\00:12:00.25 Hypocrisy is addressed in the Old Testament. 00:12:00.28\00:12:02.22 Look real quick if you will, first chapter of Isaiah. 00:12:02.88\00:12:05.82 He dives right in. 00:12:06.55\00:12:07.89 Isaiah sort of like the Old Testament gospel and he doesn't 00:12:08.19\00:12:11.43 spare any punches. 00:12:11.46\00:12:12.79 Go to verse 12, okay? 00:12:13.26\00:12:14.73 "When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from 00:12:15.90\00:12:19.43 your hand to trample My courts? 00:12:19.47\00:12:21.37 To bring no more futile sacrifices; incense is an 00:12:22.04\00:12:25.74 abomination to Me. 00:12:25.77\00:12:27.08 The New Moons, the Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot 00:12:27.11\00:12:31.11 endure iniquity," so as you're going through the religious 00:12:31.15\00:12:34.08 things, but it's coming from iniquity, "and the 00:12:34.12\00:12:36.62 sacred meeting. 00:12:36.65\00:12:37.95 Your New Moons, your appointed feasts, My soul hates; They are 00:12:37.99\00:12:40.66 troubled to Me. 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.02 I am weary of bearing them. 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.46 When you spread out your hands, I will hide--" that means when 00:12:43.49\00:12:45.96 they would pray and they'd spread out their hands. 00:12:45.99\00:12:47.50 "I will hide My eyes from you, even though you make many 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.50 prayers, I will not hear. 00:12:50.53\00:12:52.20 Your hands are full of blood." 00:12:52.90\00:12:54.30 And he says here's the solution. 00:12:55.24\00:12:56.60 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the 00:12:57.37\00:13:01.01 evil of your doings from before My eyes. 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.21 Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice. 00:13:03.48\00:13:07.52 Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 00:13:07.55\00:13:11.52 'Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord, 00:13:11.85\00:13:14.29 'Though your sins are like scarlet, They'll be white as 00:13:14.72\00:13:16.86 snow; though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. 00:13:16.89\00:13:20.46 If you are willing and obedient, You'll eat the good of the land; 00:13:20.50\00:13:23.60 But if you refuse and rebel, You'll be devoured by 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.30 the sword.'" 00:13:27.34\00:13:28.64 And the understanding here is no matter how many prayers you 00:13:28.67\00:13:30.97 pray, no matter how many offerings you sacrifice, no 00:13:31.01\00:13:34.54 matter how many time you show up in the temple for the various 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.91 feasts and sabbaths, if your hearts aren't cleansed by 00:13:37.95\00:13:41.48 the Gospel. 00:13:41.52\00:13:42.82 It's smoke in his nose is what the Bible says. 00:13:42.85\00:13:45.42 The Lord wants us to be real Christians. 00:13:46.02\00:13:49.32 As I quoted a minute ago, Oswald Chambers said, "The world is 00:13:50.26\00:13:54.10 always--" doesn't the media love to find a hypocrite Christian? 00:13:54.13\00:13:57.37 They'll hold that forth and say, you know, if this is how the 00:13:58.43\00:14:02.70 Christians were acting then I am still safe not going to church 00:14:02.74\00:14:05.21 'cause they're just all hypocrites. 00:14:05.24\00:14:06.88 The devil is scared of nothing more than genuine Christians 00:14:07.28\00:14:10.41 that are really changed from the inside out. 00:14:10.45\00:14:12.98 announcer: Don't forget to request today's life changing 00:14:14.78\00:14:17.09 free resource. 00:14:17.12\00:14:18.35 Not only can you receive this free gift in the mail, you can 00:14:18.39\00:14:20.76 download a digital copy straight to your computer or 00:14:20.79\00:14:23.29 mobile device. 00:14:23.32\00:14:24.56 To get your copy of today's free gift simply call us and ask for 00:14:24.59\00:14:28.26 the offer number shown on your screen or visit the web address 00:14:28.30\00:14:32.07 and download a digital copy. 00:14:32.10\00:14:34.04 And be sure to select a digital download option on the 00:14:34.07\00:14:36.67 request page. 00:14:36.71\00:14:38.01 It's now easier than ever for you to study God's Word with 00:14:38.04\00:14:41.14 Amazing Facts wherever and whenever you want, and most 00:14:41.18\00:14:44.78 important to share it with others. 00:14:44.81\00:14:46.85 Doug: What does God want? 00:14:49.02\00:14:50.35 Psalm 51 verse 6, "Behold," here it is, "You desire truth in the 00:14:50.39\00:14:56.96 inward parts. 00:14:56.99\00:14:58.46 And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom." 00:14:58.76\00:15:02.10 God wants us to be honest and true on the inside. 00:15:02.43\00:15:05.30 And years ago went to Egypt, and I saw King Tut's treasures, and 00:15:05.67\00:15:11.57 when Howard Carter first discovered King Tut's tomb, I 00:15:11.61\00:15:15.28 think it was 1921 that they unsealed the first tomb, they 00:15:15.31\00:15:19.61 went in this great stone cut room and then there was this 00:15:19.65\00:15:22.28 big coffin. 00:15:22.32\00:15:23.79 And they open up the coffin, there was a gold box, and then 00:15:23.82\00:15:26.15 it was another gold box, and another gold box, and there was 00:15:26.19\00:15:29.52 like a nest of seven coffins, and then they had this 00:15:29.56\00:15:33.16 beautiful, it's a masterpiece, as one coffin's got 240 pounds 00:15:33.19\00:15:40.07 of gold studded with gems. 00:15:40.10\00:15:43.00 And then they lift that off, they get this priceless, you've 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.34 seen the face mask of King Tut. 00:15:45.37\00:15:46.91 Considered one of the most priceless artwork, its almost 00:15:47.18\00:15:49.48 perfect gold. 00:15:49.51\00:15:51.31 And then they took that off the mummy. 00:15:52.25\00:15:53.75 And it was wrapped in some cloth that had some gold in it. 00:15:54.28\00:15:58.55 And then finally, they took that off and you know what they found 00:15:59.25\00:16:02.66 underneath it all. 00:16:02.69\00:16:04.16 Here's a picture of King Tut. 00:16:04.19\00:16:05.56 So all that gold, this around, and he was a young 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.93 king actually. 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.27 He doesn't look very young right now. 00:16:11.30\00:16:12.63 He died at about 19 years of age, but all that gold, and all 00:16:12.67\00:16:15.40 that beauty, and all that art is surrounding a rotten, 00:16:15.44\00:16:19.31 withered mummy. 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.21 This is what Jesus is talking about. 00:16:22.84\00:16:24.85 If we've got all the beauty in our religion and we don't 00:16:24.88\00:16:29.05 have the heart change. 00:16:29.08\00:16:30.39 This is what I see he says what does he want? 00:16:30.42\00:16:32.02 Christ said Pharisee, you clean the outside of the cup and you 00:16:32.49\00:16:37.66 don't clean the inside. 00:16:37.69\00:16:39.03 Now if you are going to go to someone's house and they tell 00:16:39.63\00:16:42.96 you, you know, I've got a problem, I'm a little bit, I'm a 00:16:43.00\00:16:45.87 little bit conflicted. 00:16:45.90\00:16:47.24 I can't ever make up my mind, whether to wash the inside or 00:16:47.27\00:16:49.97 the outside of my dishes. 00:16:50.01\00:16:51.47 What are you going to want to hear? 00:16:51.51\00:16:52.87 That they wash the outside or the inside? 00:16:53.71\00:16:55.44 If you're going to be drinking from their cup, you just want 00:16:56.24\00:16:58.38 the outside clean or do you especially want the 00:16:58.41\00:17:00.15 inside clean? 00:17:00.18\00:17:01.55 Well, this is how the Lord is. 00:17:02.12\00:17:03.42 He says look if you got to choose between the two, I don't 00:17:03.45\00:17:05.29 care about the outside as much as the inside. 00:17:05.32\00:17:06.96 That's okay for you to be good on the outside too but start 00:17:06.99\00:17:10.83 with the inside, because if the heart is changed, the words are 00:17:10.86\00:17:14.30 changed, the life is changed, it all changes when they get 00:17:14.36\00:17:17.50 the gospel. 00:17:17.53\00:17:18.87 It's got to start on the inside. 00:17:19.10\00:17:20.54 So why do people--why do we sometimes pretend to be what 00:17:23.24\00:17:28.34 we're not? 00:17:28.38\00:17:29.68 Well like Jesus said sometimes we're trying to make a big 00:17:29.71\00:17:31.81 impression or worried about what people think. 00:17:31.85\00:17:34.15 You know oftentimes, it's fear. 00:17:34.65\00:17:36.05 People do hypocritical things because they're afraid. 00:17:36.95\00:17:39.52 Two examples, David, 1 Samuel 21, he heard that Achish 00:17:40.16\00:17:45.76 realized who he was. 00:17:46.26\00:17:47.76 It says, "When David heard these words he was very much afraid of 00:17:48.23\00:17:51.40 Achish, king of Gath." 00:17:51.43\00:17:52.73 He was a philistine king. 00:17:52.77\00:17:54.10 So he changed his behavior. 00:17:54.14\00:17:55.87 He pretended he was crazy. 00:17:56.71\00:17:58.07 He scratched on the doors. 00:17:58.54\00:17:59.94 He led his spit go down his beard. 00:18:00.28\00:18:02.24 Now what's--he was pretending to be something he wasn't, why? 00:18:03.48\00:18:06.68 Because he was afraid. 00:18:07.25\00:18:08.62 Why did Abraham pretend that Sarah was just his sister? 00:18:09.75\00:18:12.39 He was afraid. 00:18:14.06\00:18:15.36 Said she's so beautiful they might kill me. 00:18:15.39\00:18:16.73 So I tell you what, let's make a deal, wink wink. 00:18:16.76\00:18:18.36 He tells Sarah, "Let's just say, it's the brother-sister. 00:18:18.39\00:18:20.70 I mean, after all we do have the same father, different mothers, 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.80 but let's not make a big deal out of the 00:18:24.07\00:18:26.00 husband-wife relationship. 00:18:26.03\00:18:27.37 Let's pretend." 00:18:27.40\00:18:28.70 It's even just partial hypocrisy. 00:18:28.74\00:18:30.41 You've heard of a half truth before. 00:18:30.94\00:18:32.41 If you've got a half truth, what's the other half? 00:18:33.04\00:18:34.91 And so why? 00:18:37.18\00:18:38.91 He was afraid. 00:18:38.95\00:18:40.28 God says to Sarah, "You laughed when you heard My prophecy and 00:18:41.65\00:18:44.75 My promise." 00:18:44.79\00:18:46.09 She said, "I didn't laugh," because she was afraid. 00:18:46.12\00:18:47.72 She did laugh. 00:18:48.39\00:18:49.72 Why did Isaac say that Rebecca was a sister? 00:18:50.29\00:18:52.83 He was afraid of the Philistines. 00:18:52.86\00:18:54.46 Peter, Jesus said, Peter said I'll not deny you even though 00:18:55.46\00:19:01.60 all of these deny you. 00:19:01.64\00:19:03.00 I'll never deny you. 00:19:03.04\00:19:04.37 And he may even mentored them, but why did he end up 00:19:04.41\00:19:06.51 denying Jesus? 00:19:06.54\00:19:07.88 He was afraid. 00:19:08.64\00:19:09.94 What was he afraid of? 00:19:09.98\00:19:11.28 Did he--was he afraid that servant girl was going to beat 00:19:11.31\00:19:12.88 him up. 00:19:12.91\00:19:14.45 No, he was afraid of what they thought. 00:19:14.48\00:19:16.08 He was afraid, all of the sudden that Jesus had become 00:19:17.19\00:19:19.02 very unpopular. 00:19:19.05\00:19:20.52 Peter had a problem with wanting to be popular. 00:19:20.56\00:19:23.06 You know it even says in Galatians chapter 2 verse 11, 00:19:23.83\00:19:26.53 even after Peter was converted, he backslid a little bit. 00:19:27.20\00:19:30.83 Just to give you the story. 00:19:31.60\00:19:32.97 The Jews were very careful about obeying in certain laws. 00:19:35.94\00:19:39.07 They didn't like the association with the Gentiles. 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.91 God told Peter, "Look do not call the Gentiles unclean, I've 00:19:42.18\00:19:45.65 cleansed them. 00:19:45.68\00:19:47.02 They can all be saved just like you." 00:19:47.05\00:19:48.38 But when Jews came to visit Peter up in Asia, and Peter had 00:19:48.95\00:19:53.72 been living with the Gentiles, eating with the Gentiles, 00:19:53.76\00:19:55.52 hangin' out with the Gentiles just like it should be, but when 00:19:55.56\00:19:58.66 the Jews came he thought what will they think of me? 00:19:58.69\00:20:01.00 And he started to withdraw from them and just hang out with 00:20:01.40\00:20:03.73 the Jews. 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.07 And it was basically was discrimination, a little racism, 00:20:05.10\00:20:06.80 you might say. 00:20:06.84\00:20:08.20 Now listen to what Paul says. 00:20:08.44\00:20:09.80 Paul, Galatians 2:11, "Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I 00:20:10.31\00:20:13.61 withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for 00:20:13.64\00:20:17.31 before certain men came from James, down in Jerusalem, he was 00:20:17.35\00:20:21.18 eating with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew 00:20:21.22\00:20:23.59 himself and separated himself, fearing those," there you got it 00:20:23.62\00:20:26.79 again, why did he do it? 00:20:26.82\00:20:28.22 Afraid. 00:20:28.96\00:20:30.26 "Fearing those who were of the circumcision, the Jews, and the 00:20:30.29\00:20:32.93 rest of the Jews, who had already been up there with 00:20:32.96\00:20:34.93 Peter, they joined him in his hypocrisy. 00:20:34.93\00:20:37.00 Even Barnabas got carried away with their hypocrisy." 00:20:37.40\00:20:39.97 Good news in the hope that if Jesus can convert fishermen. 00:20:42.94\00:20:46.57 He can convert us. 00:20:47.08\00:20:48.41 So does it bother you that there's hypocrites in 00:20:49.48\00:20:52.78 the church? 00:20:52.81\00:20:54.18 I'm more concerned about hypocrisy in me. 00:20:55.15\00:20:57.45 Sort of human nature sometimes to put on a show. 00:20:59.52\00:21:02.16 Christians need to get the victory over that but it 00:21:02.39\00:21:04.73 shouldn't bother you in that do you counterfeit a nickel? 00:21:04.76\00:21:09.46 Have you heard of counterfeit 20 dollar bills? 00:21:11.03\00:21:13.13 You'll find counterfeit $100 bills. 00:21:14.57\00:21:16.34 I've never seen a counterfeit nickel. 00:21:17.41\00:21:18.97 Do you know why? 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.64 It's not worth it. 00:21:23.14\00:21:24.55 What do you counterfeit? 00:21:24.78\00:21:26.15 You counterfeit things that are valuable. 00:21:26.75\00:21:29.55 Why does the devil have so many counterfeit Christians? 00:21:30.12\00:21:33.36 Because nothing is more valuable in the world than a 00:21:33.59\00:21:36.36 real Christian. 00:21:36.39\00:21:37.79 That's why you've got so many counterfeits. 00:21:37.83\00:21:39.73 And so it shouldn't surprise us. 00:21:40.63\00:21:42.23 Don't be discouraged. 00:21:42.60\00:21:43.93 Now why is it so important that we understand what it means to 00:21:45.27\00:21:49.77 be a hypocrite? 00:21:49.80\00:21:51.17 Hypocrites aren't going to make it. 00:21:52.34\00:21:53.68 Job 8:13, "So the path, so is the path of all who forget God; 00:21:55.41\00:22:00.18 And the hope of the hypocrite shall perish." 00:22:00.22\00:22:02.45 Now there's hope for you and me right now but someday, in the 00:22:03.55\00:22:07.19 end when the Lord comes, Job 20, verse 5, "The triumphing of the 00:22:07.22\00:22:10.86 wicked is short, the joy of the hypocrite is just for a moment?" 00:22:10.89\00:22:14.30 It's the praise of men. 00:22:14.36\00:22:15.66 Job 34:30, "The hypocrite should not reign," we will not live and 00:22:16.10\00:22:20.00 reign with Christ and find, listen to what Jesus said, 00:22:20.04\00:22:22.14 Matthew 24:51. 00:22:22.17\00:22:23.54 "The master of that servant will come on a day he's not looking 00:22:24.27\00:22:28.31 for him and an hour he's not aware of, will cut him in two 00:22:28.34\00:22:32.45 and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. 00:22:32.48\00:22:35.62 And there'll be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 00:22:35.95\00:22:38.05 Is that pretty clear where the hypocrites are going to end up? 00:22:38.09\00:22:40.19 That's why it's important that we talk about this because Jesus 00:22:41.22\00:22:43.83 talks about it but there is hope for us. 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.53 Can a Pharisee be saved? 00:22:49.20\00:22:50.53 Did Jesus save any Pharisees? 00:22:52.37\00:22:54.10 Do you know why Nicodemus met with Jesus at night? 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.44 He was a pharisee. 00:22:58.47\00:22:59.77 He was afraid of what the other Pharisees would think. 00:22:59.81\00:23:01.98 But when Jesus finally died on the cross, he got over his fear, 00:23:04.01\00:23:06.38 and he came to take care of the body. 00:23:06.68\00:23:09.85 Joseph of Arimathea, you don't ever hear about him until 00:23:10.59\00:23:13.09 Jesus dies. 00:23:13.12\00:23:14.46 He was more worried about what God thought than what the other 00:23:14.49\00:23:16.69 Pharisees thought that had just condemned Jesus. 00:23:16.73\00:23:19.39 And it says Joseph went boldly to Pilate and asked for 00:23:19.73\00:23:22.70 his body. 00:23:22.73\00:23:24.07 Pilate thought I thought you Pharisees wanted him dead. 00:23:24.10\00:23:25.47 Now you want to honor him? 00:23:25.87\00:23:27.17 I don't understand. 00:23:27.20\00:23:28.50 Joseph was bold. 00:23:28.54\00:23:29.87 And then you know another famous Pharisee, his name is Saul 00:23:29.90\00:23:32.94 of Tarsus. 00:23:32.97\00:23:34.31 Later called Paul. 00:23:34.74\00:23:36.08 Let me read this to you, Acts 23:6, "But Paul perceived that 00:23:36.95\00:23:40.72 one part was Sadducees and the other were Pharisees. 00:23:40.75\00:23:42.88 He cried out in the council, 'Men and brethren, I am a 00:23:42.92\00:23:45.92 Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee."' 00:23:45.95\00:23:48.22 Acts 26:5, "They knew me from the first, if they were willing 00:23:49.46\00:23:53.73 to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our 00:23:53.76\00:23:57.40 religion I lived a Pharisee." 00:23:57.43\00:23:59.93 Now you know what that means? 00:24:00.67\00:24:02.04 That half of the New Testament was written by a Pharisee that 00:24:04.04\00:24:08.71 was converted. 00:24:08.74\00:24:10.25 So is there hope for a hypocrite? 00:24:10.28\00:24:11.95 What happened to Paul? 00:24:13.25\00:24:14.58 Paul ran into Jesus on the road to Damascus and his heart 00:24:15.38\00:24:19.22 was changed. 00:24:19.25\00:24:20.56 He was thoroughly converted. 00:24:20.59\00:24:21.96 He spent a lot of time on his knees--he fasted and prayed for 00:24:22.52\00:24:25.93 three days. 00:24:25.96\00:24:27.30 And once he really got ahold of the real thing, well you know, 00:24:27.36\00:24:30.73 this you've got to understand that even those who are a little 00:24:31.33\00:24:35.54 hypocritical, they know there's value in the real thing and 00:24:35.57\00:24:38.04 they're trying for the real thing, but instead of worried 00:24:38.07\00:24:40.88 first about what God thinks, they're worried about what 00:24:40.91\00:24:42.84 men think. 00:24:42.88\00:24:44.18 Now Gospel summed up in two things: love for God and love 00:24:44.21\00:24:49.95 for your neighbor. 00:24:49.98\00:24:51.29 What comes first? 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.69 First, come unto me, Matthew 11, comes before Matthew 28. 00:24:53.39\00:24:58.43 It's first this love relationship. 00:24:59.43\00:25:01.00 If we will start with what does God think of me and then when we 00:25:01.03\00:25:04.73 get that right. 00:25:04.77\00:25:06.07 Then we live before other people. 00:25:06.10\00:25:08.34 So they'll glorify our Father in Heaven, we want to be good 00:25:08.37\00:25:10.71 examples, but it's got to start with is God the most important?
