male announcer: It is the best selling book in history. 00:00:03.16\00:00:05.77 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted. 00:00:05.87\00:00:09.77 And it's words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, should 00:00:09.87\00:00:14.38 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.51\00:00:16.48 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.51\00:00:19.98 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate and practical 00:00:20.02\00:00:24.62 answers to all your Bible questions. 00:00:24.65\00:00:28.42 This broadcast is a previously recorded episode. 00:00:28.46\00:00:31.39 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.43\00:00:34.13 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.20\00:00:39.00 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:39.03\00:00:44.21 Now here's your host from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:44.24\00:00:48.14 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:48.18\00:00:49.94 Doug Batchelor: Hello listening friends, welcome to "Bible 00:00:49.98\00:00:52.38 Answers Live." 00:00:52.41\00:00:53.75 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:53.78\00:00:55.65 It's been estimated that there are approximately 22,000 00:00:55.68\00:00:59.75 different species of ants in the world, but the Guinness Book of 00:00:59.79\00:01:03.39 World Records lists the Australian bulldog as one of the 00:01:03.43\00:01:07.13 deadliest species on the planet. 00:01:07.20\00:01:09.60 Bulldog ants are also known as jack jumper ants for their 00:01:09.63\00:01:13.00 jumping behavior. 00:01:13.03\00:01:14.40 When agitated, they can repeatedly leap forward four 00:01:14.44\00:01:17.14 inches in a bound. 00:01:17.17\00:01:18.47 They'll chase you. 00:01:18.51\00:01:19.81 They have superior vision and are able to follow or even chase 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.44 an intruder from the nest. 00:01:22.48\00:01:24.35 And they're very large as far as ants go, with some measuring 00:01:24.38\00:01:27.35 over one and a half inches long. 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.75 That said, most healthy people would not die from the sting of 00:01:29.78\00:01:33.25 one ant, but some humans have died from anaphylactic shock 00:01:33.29\00:01:37.06 after being bitten by a bulldog ant. 00:01:37.09\00:01:40.03 These ants have cousins in South America called bullet ants, and 00:01:40.06\00:01:44.60 they carry what is believed to be the most painful sting in 00:01:44.63\00:01:47.34 the world. 00:01:47.37\00:01:48.67 If one should bite you on the foot, it's been described as 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.54 feeling like you're walking on hot coals with a nail through 00:01:51.57\00:01:54.34 your foot or feeling like you've been shot when you've been 00:01:54.38\00:01:57.25 bitten, hence the name bullet ants. 00:01:57.28\00:02:00.35 And the worst part is that the excruciating, throbbing pain can 00:02:00.38\00:02:04.69 last up to 24 hours. 00:02:04.72\00:02:06.89 But this is nothing compared to how many Christians believe God 00:02:06.92\00:02:09.96 is going to torture sinners through eternity. 00:02:09.99\00:02:12.69 Jëan Ross: That's right, Pastor Doug. 00:02:12.73\00:02:14.03 There's a lot of confusion about, yeah, well, what happens 00:02:14.10\00:02:15.93 to the wicked? 00:02:15.96\00:02:17.27 Are they going to burn eternally? 00:02:17.30\00:02:18.63 And when they think they're just about done, well, it's only just 00:02:18.67\00:02:21.40 begun because they're burning throughout all eternities. 00:02:21.44\00:02:24.01 Isn't that what the Bible teaches? 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.37 Doug: Yeah, there's really like two extremes when it comes to 00:02:25.41\00:02:28.88 what Christians believe about what happens when the wicked 00:02:28.91\00:02:32.98 are punished. 00:02:33.01\00:02:34.35 One group says, "Well there is no punishment and, you know, 00:02:34.38\00:02:37.55 everyone's going to be saved," universalism. 00:02:37.59\00:02:40.16 And then the other group says, "Yeah, they're going to be 00:02:40.19\00:02:42.16 punished in the lake of fire and they'll burn for zillions of 00:02:42.19\00:02:45.83 years, and then zillions, and it never ends." 00:02:45.86\00:02:48.96 Just burning endlessly for the sins of, you know, comparatively 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.53 a minuscule amount of time. 00:02:52.57\00:02:54.94 And the Bible actually teaches something between the two. 00:02:54.97\00:02:57.97 There is a punishment of the wicked, but it doesn't go on for 00:02:58.01\00:03:01.78 billions of years. 00:03:01.81\00:03:03.11 Jesus said, "Each one is punished according to what he 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.35 deserves, and ultimately wicked are not immortalized." 00:03:05.38\00:03:09.45 You can read, for instance, in Malachi chapter 4, "'Behold, the 00:03:09.48\00:03:12.82 day is coming that will burn like an oven, and all the 00:03:12.85\00:03:16.16 proud,'" that's all of them, "'and all who do wickedly will 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.86 be stubble. 00:03:19.89\00:03:21.20 The day is coming that will burn them up,' says the Lord of 00:03:21.23\00:03:24.33 Hosts, 'It will leave them neither root nor branch.'" 00:03:24.37\00:03:27.44 And of course Revelation 20 says, "They're destroyed." 00:03:27.47\00:03:30.27 Fire comes down, and this is the second death. 00:03:30.31\00:03:33.24 And then Revelation 21 tells us, "There is no more pain." 00:03:33.27\00:03:37.75 And so, so many people have turned away from God because 00:03:37.78\00:03:41.35 they have this medieval interpretation of hell that God 00:03:41.38\00:03:45.05 is going to torture. 00:03:45.09\00:03:46.42 He's basically saying, "Love me or I'm going to torture 00:03:46.45\00:03:47.99 you forever." 00:03:48.02\00:03:49.36 And they have a hard time loving a God that appears almost 00:03:49.39\00:03:52.69 sadistic in one sense. 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.40 Friends, you need to know what the Bible really teaches 00:03:55.43\00:03:57.80 about this. 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.17 And then one other misconception is the devil then of all 00:03:59.20\00:04:00.77 things is in charge of hell. 00:04:00.80\00:04:02.27 And how can you trust him to give people a fair punishment? 00:04:02.30\00:04:06.37 So, we have a free offer that will give you all the scriptures 00:04:06.41\00:04:08.94 and what the Bible really says about the punishment of 00:04:08.98\00:04:11.41 the wicked. 00:04:11.45\00:04:12.78 And we do this, not to scare people, but it helps you better 00:04:12.81\00:04:15.98 understand the love of God. 00:04:16.02\00:04:17.82 Jëan: A free offer today is a study guide. 00:04:17.85\00:04:20.16 One of the "Amazing Facts's" study guides called "Is the 00:04:20.19\00:04:23.26 Devil in Charge of Hell?" 00:04:23.29\00:04:25.06 Now as Pastor Doug said, if you've never read this before, 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.36 you need to get it. 00:04:27.40\00:04:28.66 It's easy. It's free. 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.00 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:04:30.03\00:04:33.54 And you can ask for that free offer. 00:04:33.57\00:04:35.47 It's called "Is the Devil in Charge of Hell?" 00:04:35.50\00:04:36.97 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone, say, "Bible Answers 00:04:37.01\00:04:40.94 Live," and then ask for it by name, "Is the Devil in Charge 00:04:40.98\00:04:43.65 of Hell?" 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.01 We'll send it to you for free. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.38 And you know Pastor Doug, it's so important. 00:04:46.41\00:04:47.85 Actually, there's good news in the subject of the destruction 00:04:47.88\00:04:50.55 of the wicked in the subject of hell, because God is a God 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.75 of love. 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.09 He always has been. He always will be. 00:04:54.12\00:04:55.59 And I think that's brought to light when you study the subject 00:04:55.62\00:04:58.36 from what the Bible says. 00:04:58.39\00:04:59.86 So, please take advantage of that. 00:04:59.89\00:05:01.73 Before we go to the phone lines, let's start with the word 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.63 of prayer. 00:05:03.67\00:05:05.00 Dear Father, we thank You once again that we have this 00:05:05.03\00:05:06.60 opportunity to study Your Word. 00:05:06.63\00:05:08.07 And Lord, we recognize the Bible is Your book, so we do pray for 00:05:08.10\00:05:11.64 the Holy Spirit to guide us as we search the scriptures. 00:05:11.67\00:05:14.84 Be with those who are listening. 00:05:14.88\00:05:16.44 We pray that You guide us to declare a Bible truth in Jesus's 00:05:16.48\00:05:19.55 name, amen. 00:05:19.58\00:05:22.05 Our first caller this evening is Glenn listening in Ohio. 00:05:22.08\00:05:24.79 Glenn, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.49 You're on the air. 00:05:26.52\00:05:27.82 Glenn: Good evening, pastors, and thank you 00:05:27.86\00:05:29.62 for taking my call. 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.43 My scripture today is the fifth chapter or the fifth verse of 00:05:31.46\00:05:36.60 chapter 66 of Isaiah. 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.67 And by the way, just parenthetically, I'd love to 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.87 hear somebody do about five or six nice sermons on chapter 66. 00:05:41.90\00:05:47.54 Doug: Okay, we'll make a note of that. 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.35 Glenn: Yes. 00:05:50.38\00:05:51.61 My question concerns the fifth chapter where the hated people 00:05:51.65\00:05:55.22 in the chapter--in the first five say, "Oh the Lord be 00:05:55.25\00:06:00.42 glorified," and they say it in a jovial way, making fun of 00:06:00.46\00:06:03.96 the hated. 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.29 "So that his joy may be full." 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.20 And that was kind of a terrible thing for them to do, and they 00:06:08.23\00:06:11.20 paid for it. 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.57 My question is, what is the purpose of and the meaning of 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.97 chapter verse 5 of chapter 66. 00:06:16.00\00:06:20.18 Doug: All right, let me read this for our friends, Glenn, 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.21 because a lot of folks don't have a Bible in front of them. 00:06:22.24\00:06:24.65 Isaiah 66:5, it says, "Hear the Word of the Lord, you who 00:06:24.68\00:06:30.05 tremble at His Word. 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.22 Your brethren who hated you, who cast you out for my namesake, 00:06:32.25\00:06:36.59 said, 'Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your 00:06:36.62\00:06:38.99 joy,' but they shall be ashamed." 00:06:39.03\00:06:41.86 Now this is talking about, through history, and Isaiah was 00:06:41.90\00:06:45.83 a victim of this himself. 00:06:45.87\00:06:48.24 Those who tremble at the Word, they're the faithful. 00:06:48.27\00:06:50.17 They believe the Word of God. 00:06:50.21\00:06:51.54 They tremble at His Word, but their brethren, you could say, 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.88 you know, part of their same faith group, the same church, 00:06:54.91\00:06:58.65 hated you and cast you out. 00:06:58.68\00:07:01.58 You know, the apostles were basically cast out of the temple 00:07:01.62\00:07:05.15 because of their faith, and they trembled at the Word of 00:07:05.19\00:07:07.36 the Lord. 00:07:07.39\00:07:08.69 They believed the Word of Jesus. 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.06 And then, as you say, it says, "'Let the Lord be glorified, 00:07:10.09\00:07:12.89 that we may see your joy,' but they shall be ashamed." 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.93 Now here where it says, "Let the Lord be glorified," I don't 00:07:15.96\00:07:18.23 think it's the wicked mocking the righteous. 00:07:18.27\00:07:21.20 I think it's saying, "God will be glorified because of your 00:07:21.24\00:07:23.94 faithfulness, but they will be ashamed." 00:07:23.97\00:07:26.64 So, it's basically saying, "If you're tempted, if you're 00:07:26.68\00:07:30.21 persecuted for your faith, even by some who claim to be 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.82 believers, follow the Word of the Lord. 00:07:33.85\00:07:38.39 You may be cast out because of your faith, but if you're 00:07:38.42\00:07:41.49 faithful in the end, God will be glorified, they will 00:07:41.52\00:07:45.06 be ashamed." 00:07:45.09\00:07:46.43 And you use the same word that they're ashamed, like when the 00:07:46.46\00:07:48.73 Lord is coming, those who persecuted you will be ashamed. 00:07:48.76\00:07:52.57 Jëan: All right, thank you, Glenn. 00:07:52.60\00:07:53.94 Great question. 00:07:53.97\00:07:55.27 We've got Randy in Florida. 00:07:55.30\00:07:56.60 Randy, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:07:56.64\00:07:57.97 Randy: Thank you, pastors for hearing my question. 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.61 Doug: Thanks for calling. 00:08:00.64\00:08:01.98 Randy: Thank you. 00:08:02.01\00:08:03.35 Yeah, there's a question of music, acceptable music during 00:08:03.38\00:08:07.08 worship service. 00:08:07.12\00:08:08.65 In particular, is music like rap acceptable during 00:08:08.68\00:08:11.79 worship service? 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.76 Doug: Yeah, well, good question, and it's a difficult question 00:08:13.79\00:08:17.09 when you ask about music because so often our opinions about 00:08:17.13\00:08:20.43 music and what's appropriate are very subjective, but there 00:08:20.46\00:08:23.23 are principles. 00:08:23.26\00:08:24.60 And when you look at the principles, the most important 00:08:24.63\00:08:27.34 thing about Christian music would be not just the melodies 00:08:27.37\00:08:31.17 and the harmonies, that's very important, but what is 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.08 the message? 00:08:34.11\00:08:35.44 Music--in the Bible, the songs were to help us 00:08:35.48\00:08:39.88 remember scriptures. 00:08:39.91\00:08:41.25 We have 150 Psalms in the Book of Psalms. 00:08:41.28\00:08:44.22 We don't remember what the melodies were, that's not been 00:08:44.25\00:08:47.29 recorded, but we do know what the words are. 00:08:47.32\00:08:50.89 And you've got the song of Moses, you've got the song of 00:08:50.93\00:08:53.46 the Lamb in the New Testament in Revelation, and these 00:08:53.50\00:08:57.17 were messages. 00:08:57.20\00:08:58.67 And often young people remember scripture by having melody go 00:08:58.70\00:09:03.14 with it. 00:09:03.17\00:09:04.47 So, music can help us remember scripture. 00:09:04.51\00:09:07.24 So, now you're asking about rap music. 00:09:07.28\00:09:10.21 You know, I personally--I think that's sort of an oxymoron. 00:09:10.25\00:09:13.58 I think there's some music of the world, and just because you 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.79 throw in Christian words, it doesn't really sanctify what may 00:09:16.82\00:09:20.66 be worldly music. 00:09:20.69\00:09:22.69 And that doesn't mean that some of the worldly music is not 00:09:22.72\00:09:26.90 amazing or talented, but you have to ask, is all music good? 00:09:26.93\00:09:32.77 Follow me. 00:09:32.80\00:09:34.40 In the Bible, it tells us that King Saul would be overcome with 00:09:34.44\00:09:38.14 an evil spirit. 00:09:38.17\00:09:39.74 David would come for the king when he was being tormented by 00:09:39.77\00:09:42.58 this evil spirit. 00:09:42.61\00:09:43.95 David would play his harp and sing, and the evil spirit would 00:09:43.98\00:09:46.61 be driven away by good music. 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.45 Obviously David inspired prophet, godly music. 00:09:49.48\00:09:54.09 If there's good music that can drive spirits away, is there bad 00:09:54.12\00:09:57.89 music that can welcome evil spirits in? 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.63 And I think it's a fair question. 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.26 I think there is. 00:10:02.30\00:10:03.63 So, we need to be very careful in the choice of music that we 00:10:03.67\00:10:08.27 bring in our church, that we're bringing in the right 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.14 angels actually. 00:10:10.17\00:10:12.07 Jëan: And you know it's also good to look at the history of 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.44 the music where it's coming from. 00:10:14.48\00:10:16.08 Protestantism was built upon the Word and the teachings 00:10:16.11\00:10:19.08 of scripture. 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.45 Music played a very important part in the Protestant church 00:10:20.48\00:10:22.98 and the Protestant movement where they were seeing their 00:10:23.02\00:10:24.99 faith, and it had good theology, a lot of the contemporary style 00:10:25.02\00:10:29.76 of worship music, somewhat lacking in the depth of Bible 00:10:29.79\00:10:34.56 truth as far as deep scholarly references. 00:10:34.56\00:10:38.47 Not that all music has to have that, but some of these great 00:10:38.50\00:10:41.27 hymns like "Firm Foundation," that we have in scripture and-- 00:10:41.30\00:10:46.37 Doug: "Great is Your Faithfulness." 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.64 Jëan: I mean these have a lot of solid meaning and-- 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.61 Doug: There's nothing wrong with new songs, right? 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.21 Yeah, Bible says sing a new song, but the new song should 00:10:53.25\00:10:55.45 fit the principles of what would be God glorifying music and 00:10:55.48\00:10:59.45 words and be teaching good theology in the process. 00:10:59.49\00:11:03.86 You know, I have a book that it's called "The Christian 00:11:03.89\00:11:06.76 and Music." 00:11:06.80\00:11:08.06 And they might be able to contact "Amazing Facts" and take 00:11:08.10\00:11:11.27 a look. 00:11:11.30\00:11:12.63 I've got all the--kind of the principles laid out in there. 00:11:12.67\00:11:14.44 You can't go through every song that's ever been done and say, 00:11:14.47\00:11:17.14 "This is good, this is bad," but once you know the principles, 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.64 people sort of get the drift. 00:11:19.67\00:11:21.64 Jëan: All right. 00:11:21.68\00:11:23.01 Next caller that we have is Janean from North Carolina. 00:11:23.04\00:11:25.78 Janean, welcome to the program. 00:11:25.81\00:11:27.55 Janean: Thank you. 00:11:27.58\00:11:28.95 My question is, will I see my relatives that are--good 00:11:28.98\00:11:37.36 questions, but will I see them in heaven. 00:11:37.39\00:11:45.73 Doug: Yeah, well the Bible's pretty clear. 00:11:45.77\00:11:47.74 There is a resurrection. 00:11:47.77\00:11:49.14 There are two resurrections. 00:11:49.17\00:11:50.47 Jesus talks about the resurrection of the just and the 00:11:50.51\00:11:53.07 resurrection of the unjust. 00:11:53.11\00:11:54.48 And those who are saved will be united together with other 00:11:54.51\00:12:01.42 believers in the resurrection at the coming of the Lord. 00:12:01.45\00:12:04.39 You can read about that in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4. 00:12:04.42\00:12:07.76 It says, "The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a 00:12:07.79\00:12:09.76 shout, with the voice of the archangel, with a trumpet 00:12:09.79\00:12:11.83 of God. 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.16 And the dead in Christ will rise first. 00:12:13.19\00:12:15.03 Then we which are alive and remain will be caught up 00:12:15.06\00:12:18.03 together with them." 00:12:18.07\00:12:19.83 So, it promises that believers will be together with them in 00:12:19.87\00:12:24.81 the presence of the Lord at the Lord's coming. 00:12:24.84\00:12:27.74 And, you know, in the Great Judgment Day, where he separates 00:12:27.78\00:12:30.65 the sheep and the goats, ostensibly, there'll be a moment 00:12:30.68\00:12:33.55 when everybody's going to see each other again. 00:12:33.58\00:12:37.19 So, there'll be a separation between the saved and the lost, 00:12:37.22\00:12:40.26 but, you know, in that great white throne judgment, all will 00:12:40.29\00:12:43.69 be present. 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.06 Jëan: We do have a study guide. 00:12:45.09\00:12:46.43 It's called "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:12:46.46\00:12:47.76 And it talks about the subject of what happens to a person when 00:12:47.83\00:12:49.93 he dies, and also talks about the hope of the Christian, which 00:12:49.96\00:12:52.87 is the resurrection of the Second Coming of Christ. 00:12:52.90\00:12:55.44 Call and ask for that, Janean. 00:12:55.47\00:12:56.81 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:12:56.84\00:13:00.21 For anyone wanting to learn more about this important subject, 00:13:00.24\00:13:02.98 you can also dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for it by 00:13:03.01\00:13:06.95 name, "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:13:06.98\00:13:08.75 We'll be happy to mail it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:13:08.78\00:13:12.55 Albert in California. 00:13:12.59\00:13:13.89 Albert, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:13:13.92\00:13:15.96 Albert: Thank you for taking my call, pastors. 00:13:15.99\00:13:19.09 My question tonight, when the Joshua and Caleb, when they went 00:13:19.13\00:13:23.77 to visit the land and they saw, they reported to Moses that they 00:13:23.80\00:13:27.87 were giants in the lands, according to the Bible, 00:13:27.90\00:13:30.61 Numbers 13:33. 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.04 My question is, are these giants were the same size as Goliath? 00:13:33.07\00:13:38.81 Doug: Well I would think that some of them must be at least 00:13:38.85\00:13:41.15 the same size. 00:13:41.18\00:13:42.48 It seems like giants over time have slowly gotten smaller. 00:13:42.52\00:13:46.02 You know, before the flood, men lived hundreds of years and they 00:13:46.05\00:13:48.69 were ostensibly bigger. 00:13:48.72\00:13:50.46 And then after the flood, it seemed like their lifespans went 00:13:50.49\00:13:53.09 down and they probably got shorter. 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.83 The giants in the time of Moses were probably a little bigger 00:13:55.86\00:13:59.43 than the giants in the time of David. 00:13:59.47\00:14:02.20 Goliath, of course, stood out head and shoulders above 00:14:02.24\00:14:04.77 everyone else, but we had a man named Robert Waldo, who lived a 00:14:04.81\00:14:08.28 100 years ago that was eight feet plus. 00:14:08.31\00:14:11.65 Goliath was nine feet six, and I think you got a verse about one 00:14:11.68\00:14:14.48 of the kings during the time of Moses-- 00:14:14.52\00:14:16.35 Jëan: You can read about it in Deuteronomy chapter 3, verse 11. 00:14:16.38\00:14:19.19 It talks about a king by the name of Og, who was the king 00:14:19.22\00:14:22.66 of Bashan. 00:14:22.69\00:14:24.03 And it doesn't tell us his exact size, but it does tell us the 00:14:24.06\00:14:26.36 size of his bed. 00:14:26.39\00:14:27.86 And it talks about it being a certain length that works out to 00:14:27.93\00:14:32.77 about 13 feet in length. 00:14:32.80\00:14:35.57 Nine cubits, 13.5. 00:14:35.60\00:14:37.64 So, that's the size of his bed. 00:14:37.67\00:14:39.67 So, he could very well be nine foot, maybe even ten foot. 00:14:39.71\00:14:42.61 Who knows? 00:14:42.64\00:14:43.98 Doug: Now you're taller than average Pastor Ross. 00:14:44.01\00:14:45.81 Have you ever gotten in a bed where you sort of hang 00:14:45.85\00:14:47.45 off the edge? 00:14:47.48\00:14:48.82 Jëan: That happens. 00:14:48.85\00:14:50.19 Doug: So maybe, who knows, that bed might not have even been big 00:14:50.22\00:14:52.02 enough for you. 00:14:52.05\00:14:53.86 Jëan: But that's a big bed. 00:14:53.89\00:14:55.19 So, yeah, there it is. 00:14:55.22\00:14:57.46 Doug: California king. 00:14:57.49\00:14:59.56 Jëan: Thank you, Albert. 00:14:59.59\00:15:00.96 Next one that we have is Nel in California. 00:15:00.96\00:15:02.80 Nel, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:15:02.83\00:15:06.23 Nel: Thank you. 00:15:06.27\00:15:07.60 My question is, what is the proper way to study the Bible? 00:15:07.64\00:15:11.61 Say, so is listening to "Bible Answers Live," a Bible study, or 00:15:11.64\00:15:17.28 does Bible study have to only be reading? 00:15:17.31\00:15:21.22 Can it be listening to a sermon or listening to other programs 00:15:21.25\00:15:25.35 who are studying the Bible with individuals. 00:15:25.39\00:15:28.39 Doug: Good, yeah, good question. 00:15:28.42\00:15:30.03 Well I think all of the above. 00:15:30.06\00:15:32.43 I certainly hope we do this program hoping that people will 00:15:32.46\00:15:35.76 gain a deeper understanding. 00:15:35.80\00:15:37.73 I would also hope this would not be the only thing that they do 00:15:37.77\00:15:40.47 in Bible study. 00:15:40.50\00:15:41.84 It's really good to have your own Bible and, you know, we have 00:15:41.87\00:15:45.21 computerized Bibles. 00:15:45.24\00:15:46.57 I do a lot of my research on the computer cause you can access 00:15:46.61\00:15:49.88 commentaries in the original languages almost instantly, but 00:15:49.91\00:15:53.55 I also really appreciate my paper Bible that I preach from, 00:15:53.58\00:15:57.65 and I've got things highlighted and underlined. 00:15:57.69\00:16:00.16 And there's just something about it. 00:16:00.19\00:16:02.59 I listen to audiobooks, you know, Pastor Ross and I are 00:16:02.62\00:16:05.23 always swapping good audiobooks we listen to of history, 00:16:05.26\00:16:08.36 and--but I also read paper books still. 00:16:08.40\00:16:12.40 So, I think it's good to have your own Bible that you study, 00:16:12.43\00:16:16.00 but certainly listening to the Bible read online, some people 00:16:16.04\00:16:20.98 are more visual, more auditory, some are more tactile, and we 00:16:21.01\00:16:24.88 all learn different ways. 00:16:24.91\00:16:26.58 I'd say all of the above, whatever works for you. 00:16:26.61\00:16:29.45 Jëan: You know, we do have a book talking about the Bible. 00:16:29.48\00:16:31.69 It's called "The Ultimate Resource." 00:16:31.72\00:16:33.56 And it'll give some principles on how to read and study the 00:16:33.59\00:16:35.66 Bible, where did the Bible come from? 00:16:35.69\00:16:37.79 We'll be happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:16:37.83\00:16:39.79 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:16:39.83\00:16:43.33 That is the resource phone line. 00:16:43.37\00:16:45.23 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone and just say, "Bible 00:16:45.27\00:16:48.80 Answers Live." 00:16:48.84\00:16:50.17 Ask for the book by name. 00:16:50.21\00:16:51.54 It's called, "The Ultimate Resource." 00:16:51.57\00:16:53.14 Again, "The Ultimate Resource." 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.14 It is a great read. 00:16:55.18\00:16:57.25 Thank you Nel. 00:16:57.28\00:16:58.61 Next caller that we have is Eli and he is in Kansas. 00:16:58.65\00:17:02.85 Eli, welcome to the program. 00:17:02.88\00:17:05.25 Eli: Hey, good evening. 00:17:05.29\00:17:06.65 Doug: Evening. 00:17:06.69\00:17:08.02 Eli: My question is, if we can overcome the sin, why are we 00:17:08.06\00:17:13.66 still called sinners? 00:17:13.70\00:17:15.36 Because--what about when you get baptized? 00:17:15.40\00:17:20.37 Isn't the--like when you get baptized cleans your sin. 00:17:20.40\00:17:24.61 And If we can like overcome the sin, why we have to lie and say 00:17:24.64\00:17:30.38 that we are sinners, if that's not true. 00:17:30.41\00:17:33.15 Like, can you explain that? 00:17:33.18\00:17:35.58 Doug: Well, you know, Paul--New Testament Christians, Paul 00:17:35.62\00:17:38.82 typically addresses them as saints. 00:17:38.85\00:17:40.62 He doesn't call them sinners. 00:17:40.66\00:17:42.62 But, you know, if a person is still living a life of sin, you 00:17:42.66\00:17:47.03 want to call him a sinner. 00:17:47.10\00:17:48.60 And, you know, Paul says, "We have all sinned." 00:17:48.63\00:17:51.37 And then the Bible says that, "Even believers may sin." 00:17:51.40\00:17:55.40 James says, "In many things we offend." 00:17:55.44\00:17:57.61 So, being a Christian, you're going to find that as you grow 00:17:57.64\00:18:00.58 in faith, there'll be some stumbling along the way cause 00:18:00.61\00:18:03.61 we're--it's a war. 00:18:03.65\00:18:04.98 We're constantly being attacked by the devil and temptation. 00:18:05.01\00:18:07.82 You just shouldn't get discouraged if you lose 00:18:07.85\00:18:10.22 a battle. 00:18:10.25\00:18:11.59 And you got to get back up and get back into the war. 00:18:11.62\00:18:14.82 So, technically, once you accept Christ, Paul in the New 00:18:14.86\00:18:19.39 Testament, they refer to us as believers and saints. 00:18:19.43\00:18:22.20 I don't think there are too many of the New Testament writers. 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.87 I'm just thinking as I'm accessing my mental hard drive 00:18:24.90\00:18:28.07 right now, Pastor Ross. 00:18:28.10\00:18:29.47 I don't know of anywhere where the apostles in their letters 00:18:29.50\00:18:31.87 call believers sinners. 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.64 Unless somebody outside of faith, yeah. 00:18:34.68\00:18:36.81 Jëan: And then he highlights that they'll change of heart. 00:18:36.85\00:18:40.22 Doug: But I know what Eli's saying is that it's true that a 00:18:40.25\00:18:43.59 lot of pastors, you know, we--they kind of talked down the 00:18:43.62\00:18:47.46 congregations as they're all sinners. 00:18:47.49\00:18:50.16 And I don't know whether that's biblical to do it that way. 00:18:50.19\00:18:54.20 Jëan: Yeah, I think that there's a balance like you say, 00:18:54.23\00:18:56.26 Pastor Doug. 00:18:56.30\00:18:57.63 I mean, we don't walk around and say, you know, "We're perfect. 00:18:57.67\00:18:59.87 We never sin--" 00:18:59.90\00:19:01.57 Doug: You don't want to claim to be saints. 00:19:01.60\00:19:03.04 Jëan: Yeah, because we're kind of setting ourselves up 00:19:03.07\00:19:04.54 for failure. 00:19:04.57\00:19:05.94 But at the same time, we can claim the promises of God, 00:19:05.97\00:19:07.54 believe that if we confess, He's faithful and just to forgive us, 00:19:07.58\00:19:09.41 and trust Him that He'll keep us from falling as the Bible says. 00:19:09.44\00:19:13.85 All right, thank you. 00:19:13.88\00:19:15.22 Next caller that we have is Dana in New York. 00:19:15.25\00:19:16.69 Dana, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:19:16.72\00:19:18.45 Dana: Oh, hi. 00:19:18.49\00:19:19.82 I watched your video the other day from a few weeks back about 00:19:19.85\00:19:23.02 all the gods and all that kind of thing and the temple, and I 00:19:23.06\00:19:27.60 was just wondering, I know there is a faction of Jews very 00:19:27.66\00:19:31.80 interested in rebuilding the temple. 00:19:31.83\00:19:34.20 And if the Jews were to, you know, many will come, but--and 00:19:34.24\00:19:39.97 accept Jesus, but I'm wondering, is that maybe why they would 00:19:40.01\00:19:44.15 want to try to rebuild because they feel they need to? 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.62 And if they do try, wouldn't that result in a pretty big 00:19:47.65\00:19:50.99 war, maybe? 00:19:51.02\00:19:52.75 Doug: Well yeah, it would. 00:19:52.79\00:19:54.09 And, you know, I've been to Israel maybe three times, at 00:19:54.12\00:19:58.09 least three times. 00:19:58.13\00:19:59.43 Pastor Ross and I were there together a few years ago. 00:19:59.46\00:20:00.96 We stood where they've got the great big golden candlestick, 00:20:01.00\00:20:04.43 that there is a group in Israel of very orthodox Jews that would 00:20:04.47\00:20:08.44 love to see the temple rebuilt. 00:20:08.47\00:20:10.14 It is a very small group. 00:20:10.17\00:20:12.74 I'm sorry to say that a large part of the people in Israel 00:20:12.77\00:20:17.95 probably live like agnostics or atheists. 00:20:17.98\00:20:22.75 There are, you know, very devoted Orthodox Jews, there's a 00:20:22.78\00:20:25.55 very zealous, a lot of patriotism in Israel, but 00:20:25.59\00:20:29.06 there's not a lot of Bible reading. 00:20:29.09\00:20:30.99 I'll bet you that if you were to stop, you know, one in ten 00:20:31.03\00:20:35.00 Israelis on the street could quote verses to you from the 00:20:35.03\00:20:37.87 Old Testament. 00:20:37.90\00:20:39.37 So, the idea that there's a big clamoring in Israel to bulldoze 00:20:39.40\00:20:43.77 the dome of the rock and rebuild the temple, I would saying, no, 00:20:43.81\00:20:46.84 that's not really happening. 00:20:46.88\00:20:48.61 And as you said, it would cause World War III because the 00:20:48.64\00:20:52.21 temple, the mosque of Omar that is on the same location as 00:20:52.25\00:20:56.48 Solomon's Temple, that'd be the only place the Jews would want 00:20:56.52\00:20:58.75 to build it. 00:20:58.79\00:21:00.22 It's the third holiest Muslim site. 00:21:00.26\00:21:03.59 The idea that that could be demolished, that would certainly 00:21:03.63\00:21:09.53 get about a billion Muslims upset. 00:21:09.56\00:21:12.03 And the reason we explain that is because people misunderstand 00:21:12.07\00:21:14.80 that verse is it 1 Thessalonians, "Then that wicked 00:21:14.84\00:21:17.14 one who calls himself God will sit in the temple of God showing 00:21:17.17\00:21:21.44 himself that he is God." 00:21:21.48\00:21:23.68 People assume that for the Antichrist to sit in the temple 00:21:23.71\00:21:26.45 of God, that means the temple must be rebuilt. 00:21:26.48\00:21:29.68 But they're taking that one verse and misunderstanding that 00:21:29.72\00:21:33.42 the Antichrist sits over the temple, the spiritual temple 00:21:33.46\00:21:36.62 of God. 00:21:36.66\00:21:37.99 Paul said the church, "You are the temple of God." 00:21:38.03\00:21:41.33 So, Paul is one who wrote that verse, and you've got to read it 00:21:41.36\00:21:43.93 in the context of the author. 00:21:43.97\00:21:45.77 Jesus said, "Destroy this temple made with hands. 00:21:45.80\00:21:47.87 I will make one without hands." 00:21:47.90\00:21:49.57 He spoke of his body. 00:21:49.60\00:21:51.24 The church is the temple of God. 00:21:51.27\00:21:53.78 The Antichrist is going to sit over the church saying--putting 00:21:53.81\00:21:57.45 himself in the place of God. 00:21:57.48\00:21:59.18 It's not talking about rebuilding the physical temple 00:21:59.21\00:22:02.25 because the Jews don't practice the sacrificial system anymore. 00:22:02.28\00:22:05.95 Jëan: The verse you're referring to 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.29 verse 3 and 4. 00:22:08.32\00:22:09.79 And just to add to that, Pastor Doug, you know, 00:22:09.82\00:22:11.69 if the temple was to be rebuilt, as you mentioned, they don't do 00:22:11.73\00:22:15.23 sacrifice anymore, but besides that, it wouldn't take the place 00:22:15.26\00:22:19.13 of the most sacred spot to the Jews, which is the Western Wall. 00:22:19.17\00:22:23.14 Which dates all the way back to the time of the rebuilding after 00:22:23.17\00:22:26.24 the Babylonian captivity. 00:22:26.27\00:22:28.08 That to them is far more sacred because they actually have stone 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.98 that dates back to that time. 00:22:31.01\00:22:32.78 To build a temple, you know, with marble or granite or 00:22:32.81\00:22:35.65 whatever it is right now, that's modern, but it's really the 00:22:35.68\00:22:38.42 ancient stones that really have significance to them. 00:22:38.45\00:22:41.99 Doug: And in the Jewish culture, the centerpiece for the 00:22:42.02\00:22:45.76 tabernacle for Solomon's temple was the Ark of the Covenant. 00:22:45.79\00:22:50.37 They don't have that. 00:22:50.40\00:22:51.70 They cannot copy the stones written with the finger of God. 00:22:51.73\00:22:54.24 It's just not the same thing. 00:22:54.27\00:22:56.00 So, the idea that they're just going to manufacture 00:22:56.04\00:22:58.84 another temple. 00:22:58.87\00:23:00.54 They're not pushing for that because it's like they said, 00:23:00.58\00:23:03.14 "Ichabod," the glory is departed. 00:23:03.18\00:23:04.61 They lost the ark or it's been hidden, and no one has found 00:23:04.65\00:23:07.48 it since. 00:23:07.52\00:23:08.82 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Dasha 00:23:08.85\00:23:11.25 from Kansas. 00:23:11.29\00:23:12.62 Dasha, welcome to the program. 00:23:12.65\00:23:13.99 Dasha: Hello, pastors. 00:23:14.02\00:23:15.36 Doug: Hi. 00:23:15.39\00:23:16.73 Dasha: I have a question. 00:23:16.76\00:23:19.49 It is from Matthew chapter 24, verse 8 and 9. 00:23:19.53\00:23:26.57 And I was studying and I flipped over 00:23:26.60\00:23:29.84 to Revelation chapter 13, verse 14, 00:23:29.87\00:23:36.08 15, 16, and 17 and I was wondering, does that--does those 00:23:36.11\00:23:42.22 verses from Revelation fit in between Matthew-- 00:23:42.25\00:23:48.56 Doug: Matthew 24:8 and 9. 00:23:48.59\00:23:51.76 Dasha: Yes, because I was trying to figure out 00:23:51.79\00:23:54.73 is this the close of probation for the church? 00:23:54.73\00:23:58.77 Doug: Let me read this for our friends, Dasha. 00:23:58.80\00:24:00.94 You're quoting verses and I want to read it so those listening 00:24:00.97\00:24:03.97 know what we're talking about. 00:24:04.01\00:24:05.34 In Matthew 24:8 and 9, 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.24 "All these are the beginning of sorrows. 00:24:07.28\00:24:09.68 'Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and 00:24:09.71\00:24:13.25 you will be hated of all nations for My name's sake.'" 00:24:13.28\00:24:15.92 So, this great persecution that you're talking about, you're 00:24:16.28\00:24:18.62 wondering if it fits into which verses in Revelation? 00:24:18.65\00:24:21.66 Dasha: It is Revelation chapter 13, and it is verse--actually 00:24:21.69\00:24:30.47 it's verse 15, 16, and 17, and I wanted to know 00:24:30.50\00:24:33.87 if that fits into there. 00:24:33.90\00:24:35.84 Doug: Talking about causing all the world to worship, and if you 00:24:35.87\00:24:38.61 don't worship the beast and his image, you cannot buy or 00:24:38.64\00:24:41.21 sell, correct? 00:24:41.24\00:24:43.08 This persecution in the last days. 00:24:43.11\00:24:46.05 The persecution that Jesus is talking about in Matthew 24 is 00:24:46.08\00:24:50.29 really twofold. 00:24:50.32\00:24:51.95 The first part he's talking about a great persecution that 00:24:51.99\00:24:54.76 came against the Jews before the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:24:54.79\00:24:58.63 And then there's a great persecution that came upon the 00:24:58.66\00:25:01.93 Christians during the Dark Ages between 538 and 1798, when the 00:25:01.96\00:25:07.87 church became a government institution and millions of true 00:25:07.90\00:25:12.34 Bible Christians were persecuted and great tribulation during 00:25:12.37\00:25:17.95 that time. 00:25:17.98\00:25:19.28 There is a final great tribulation during the seven 00:25:19.31\00:25:22.15 last plagues you read about in Daniel chapter 12 and in 00:25:22.18\00:25:25.29 Revelation, is it 15 and 16. 00:25:25.32\00:25:28.49 So--but the mark of the beast, time of trouble, that's 00:25:28.52\00:25:32.23 connected with the very last one. 00:25:32.26\00:25:34.36 Jëan: That's right. 00:25:34.36\00:25:35.66 So, when you look at Matthew 24, you have a time of trouble. 00:25:35.70\00:25:38.17 You see this first time of trouble, which took place 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.40 historically during the 12 and 60 years, but there is a repeat 00:25:40.44\00:25:43.94 of trouble. 00:25:43.97\00:25:45.27 Daniel chapter 12 was one, a great time of trouble, worse 00:25:45.31\00:25:47.84 than there has ever been. 00:25:47.88\00:25:49.21 But the good news is thy people shall be delivered. 00:25:49.24\00:25:51.65 So, God's people will be delivered through 00:25:51.68\00:25:53.38 that experience. 00:25:53.42\00:25:54.75 That's why it says in Matthew chapter 25, "He who endures to 00:25:54.78\00:25:58.15 the end shall be saved." 00:25:58.19\00:25:59.82 So, it's dealing with both. 00:25:59.85\00:26:01.49 It's dealing with the persecution that happened in the 00:26:01.52\00:26:03.59 past, but there's definitely a persecution in the future, which 00:26:03.63\00:26:06.56 is highlighted in Revelation 13. 00:26:06.59\00:26:08.66 No man can buy or sell. 00:26:08.70\00:26:10.03 Eventually, there is a death decree that is passed. 00:26:10.07\00:26:12.40 Doug: Yeah, and the close of probation you're asking about, 00:26:12.43\00:26:14.97 that happens before the seven last plagues and this great time 00:26:15.00\00:26:19.47 of trouble. 00:26:19.51\00:26:20.84 But don't worry, just be faithful. 00:26:20.88\00:26:22.68 God promises that he's going to bring us through that. 00:26:22.71\00:26:25.35 It is through tribulation we enter the kingdom of God, so we 00:26:25.38\00:26:28.98 don't need to worry. 00:26:29.02\00:26:30.35 Jesus can get us through it just like He got the Israelites 00:26:30.39\00:26:32.65 through the plagues. 00:26:32.69\00:26:34.09 Don't go away, friends, we're just going to 00:26:34.12\00:26:35.82 take a brief break. 00:26:35.86\00:26:37.19 We're going to come back, take more calls. 00:26:37.23\00:26:38.69 ¤¤¤ 00:26:38.99\00:26:42.73 male announcer: Stay tuned. 00:26:42.76\00:26:44.07 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:26:44.10\00:26:46.20 ¤¤¤ 00:26:50.24\00:26:54.74 female: We grew up Catholic. 00:26:54.78\00:26:56.08 I went to Catholic school for nine years. 00:26:56.11\00:26:58.08 All the group of my friends and I would go to church 00:26:58.11\00:27:01.05 every Sunday. 00:27:01.08\00:27:02.48 I think as a young child, I had a closer relationship with God 00:27:02.52\00:27:06.76 than I did as a young adult. 00:27:06.79\00:27:08.62 I never really forgot Him, but I did. 00:27:08.66\00:27:12.29 From high school I went to college and then after college, 00:27:12.33\00:27:15.53 I went into the dance world and became a dancer. 00:27:15.56\00:27:21.84 Got married late in my life, but at the right time. 00:27:21.87\00:27:26.04 He also grew up as a Catholic. 00:27:26.07\00:27:28.24 My husband worked as a software salesperson in New York City. 00:27:28.28\00:27:32.81 We woke up early that morning of 9/11 and I said to him--I said, 00:27:32.85\00:27:36.69 "Why are you not going to the city today?" 00:27:36.72\00:27:38.19 He says, "Look at this day, it's beautiful." 00:27:38.22\00:27:40.19 He says, "I really want to spend the day with you and the girls." 00:27:40.22\00:27:43.96 Just as that first plane hit the towers, he dropped to his knees 00:27:43.99\00:27:48.06 and he said, "Thank God. 00:27:48.10\00:27:50.87 I was supposed to be up in the second building today." 00:27:50.90\00:27:56.00 So, we changed our lives. 00:27:56.04\00:27:57.84 We found our place in the mountains in West Virginia. 00:27:57.87\00:28:02.01 My eldest child was born on Christmas Day, so that was 00:28:02.04\00:28:04.85 always very special until Christmas Day two years ago, my 00:28:04.88\00:28:09.85 husband died on our kitchen floor. 00:28:09.88\00:28:12.02 My youngest child and I worked for about an hour doing CPR, but 00:28:12.05\00:28:18.23 living so remotely as where we live, there was eight inches of 00:28:18.26\00:28:22.13 snow on the ground. 00:28:22.16\00:28:23.47 The emergency vehicles could not get to us. 00:28:23.50\00:28:26.00 We lost him that day. 00:28:26.03\00:28:27.37 Ten days after my husband died, the gray water system was 00:28:31.21\00:28:35.78 pouring out underneath the house. 00:28:35.81\00:28:37.28 I called the plumber up and I asked him if he remembered my 00:28:37.31\00:28:40.95 husband, and he says, "Oh, I do remember speaking with him." 00:28:40.98\00:28:43.89 I said, "Well, he passed away on Christmas Day," and he says, 00:28:43.92\00:28:47.22 "I'll be over tonight." 00:28:47.26\00:28:48.62 The whole underneath the house was replaced. 00:28:48.66\00:28:51.26 "So how much do I owe you for today?" 00:28:51.29\00:28:53.03 He says, "Let me think. 00:28:53.06\00:28:56.60 Nothing." 00:28:56.63\00:28:57.97 And I just hugged him and he says, "How would you like to 00:28:58.00\00:29:02.17 come to church on Saturday?" 00:29:02.20\00:29:03.54 And I said, "Saturday?" 00:29:03.57\00:29:05.44 We ended up going to church on Saturday and his wife gave us 00:29:05.47\00:29:09.34 the Amazing Facts Bible studies. 00:29:09.38\00:29:12.15 And we couldn't get enough of it. 00:29:12.18\00:29:14.55 When the girls and I heard the story of Doug Batchelor and the 00:29:14.58\00:29:18.29 richest caveman, his story inspired all of us that, you 00:29:18.32\00:29:22.36 know, you can walk with God and talk with God and have a 00:29:22.39\00:29:26.43 personal relationship with Him. 00:29:26.46\00:29:28.73 The girls and I had decided that we're all going to get 00:29:28.76\00:29:30.87 baptized together. 00:29:30.90\00:29:32.57 That was a beautiful moment that I wish their dad was there 00:29:32.60\00:29:36.00 because I think he would be really proud that they chose to 00:29:36.04\00:29:39.27 give their hearts to Jesus that day. 00:29:39.31\00:29:42.24 I want to say thank you to Pastor Doug for all the facts 00:29:42.28\00:29:47.58 that he shares and his knowledge. 00:29:47.62\00:29:50.82 It had to die 00:32:00.18\00:32:03.79 again, or did they go up to heaven when he went up? 00:32:03.82\00:32:06.82 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:32:06.86\00:32:08.19 Well Lazarus, Dorcas, Jairus's daughter was only 12 years old. 00:32:08.22\00:32:14.30 Jesus ascended to heaven before they died. 00:32:14.30\00:32:17.33 I'm sure that they ended up living normal lives. 00:32:17.37\00:32:20.84 Some may have died, you know, prematurely from illness 00:32:20.87\00:32:23.64 or persecution. 00:32:23.67\00:32:25.01 The Bible doesn't say. 00:32:25.04\00:32:26.37 I don't remember if there's anything in church history about 00:32:26.41\00:32:28.14 what happened to Lazarus as far as whether he was persecuted or 00:32:28.18\00:32:31.58 not, but it seems from everything we read in the Bible 00:32:31.61\00:32:35.82 that they went on to live full lives and then they died like 00:32:35.85\00:32:39.65 everyone else does. 00:32:39.69\00:32:40.99 So, they were raised and given normal bodies that needed to 00:32:41.02\00:32:45.23 continue living and growing old and ultimately dying. 00:32:45.26\00:32:48.56 Jëan: That's right. 00:32:48.60\00:32:49.93 So, they were not resurrected with an immortal body as Jesus 00:32:49.96\00:32:52.07 was when he came from the tomb. 00:32:52.10\00:32:54.17 We do have some examples of people that were resurrected and 00:32:54.20\00:32:57.41 taken to heaven while you've got Moses, according to the book of 00:32:57.44\00:32:59.84 Jude, that was resurrected. 00:32:59.87\00:33:01.34 He was resurrected with an immortal body. 00:33:01.38\00:33:03.41 He was taken to heaven. 00:33:03.45\00:33:04.78 And then the Bible speaks of a group of people that were 00:33:04.81\00:33:06.68 resurrected at the time of Christ's resurrection. 00:33:06.72\00:33:09.82 And not much is said about them, but it does speak about a group 00:33:09.85\00:33:13.96 going to heaven. 00:33:13.99\00:33:15.42 And they serve as the first fruits of those who 00:33:15.46\00:33:17.26 are resurrected. 00:33:17.29\00:33:18.63 But all of them were resurrected with immortal bodies, whereas 00:33:18.66\00:33:20.76 the rest of the resurrections, both in the time of Christ and 00:33:20.80\00:33:23.43 in the Old Testament, they were not immortal resurrections. 00:33:23.47\00:33:26.84 People were resurrected, they lived, and then they died-- 00:33:26.87\00:33:29.84 Doug: Maybe like a healing. 00:33:29.87\00:33:31.21 Jëan: Yeah, there you go. 00:33:31.24\00:33:32.74 It's not the second death though that you read about in the book 00:33:32.77\00:33:35.74 of Revelation. 00:33:35.78\00:33:37.08 The second death has reference to the wicked and that final 00:33:37.11\00:33:40.15 destruction that takes place. 00:33:40.18\00:33:41.62 There are just a few exceptions, those who are resurrected at 00:33:41.65\00:33:44.25 this time. 00:33:44.29\00:33:45.59 Doug: Yeah, now it'd be terrible if someone that Jesus 00:33:45.62\00:33:47.36 resurrected then died lost because they'd died three times. 00:33:47.39\00:33:52.36 Jëan: That's right. 00:33:52.39\00:33:53.70 They could. 00:33:53.73\00:33:55.00 Theoretically, yeah. 00:33:55.03\00:33:56.36 Doug: Let's hope they're all safe. 00:33:56.40\00:33:57.73 Jëan: That's right. 00:33:57.77\00:33:59.07 All right, Maurice in Utah, Maurice, welcome to the program. 00:33:59.10\00:34:01.10 Maurice: Hello, Pastor Jëan, Pastor Doug. 00:34:01.14\00:34:03.30 Question for you. 00:34:03.34\00:34:04.74 I always was taught that in the Bible references, you know, 00:34:04.77\00:34:09.14 fleeing to the mountains in the end-times. 00:34:09.18\00:34:11.81 But if you could explain in Revelation chapter 16, verse 20, 00:34:11.85\00:34:16.05 that, "Every island fled away and the mountains could not 00:34:16.08\00:34:18.45 be found." 00:34:18.49\00:34:19.82 So, should we be going to the mountains or where should we 00:34:19.85\00:34:22.22 be going? 00:34:22.26\00:34:23.56 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:34:23.59\00:34:24.89 If it says in Matthew 24 and Luke, "Those that be in Judea 00:34:24.93\00:34:28.63 flee into the mountains." 00:34:28.66\00:34:30.63 During the small time of trouble, God's people are going 00:34:30.67\00:34:32.83 to be living in isolated places when there's persecution. 00:34:32.87\00:34:36.84 But when it talks about the islands and the mountains being 00:34:36.87\00:34:40.04 swallowed up, that's after probation closes, and I think 00:34:40.08\00:34:43.41 that actually happens after the saints are being caught up to 00:34:43.45\00:34:46.45 meet the Lord in the air. 00:34:46.48\00:34:47.95 That behind, there's going to be just total devastation. 00:34:47.98\00:34:52.15 You can read about that in Jeremiah chapter 4. It says, 00:34:52.19\00:34:55.59 "The cities were broken down by the presence of the Lord and by 00:34:55.62\00:34:59.83 His fierce anger." 00:34:59.86\00:35:01.20 And so, that's when the islands disappear and the 00:35:01.23\00:35:02.80 great earthquake. 00:35:02.83\00:35:04.47 I forget what verse revelation talks about an earthquake such 00:35:04.50\00:35:06.80 as there never has been. 00:35:06.84\00:35:08.47 Jëan: That's all under the seventh plague, which is 00:35:08.50\00:35:10.84 connected right with the second coming of Christ, as you 00:35:10.87\00:35:12.97 mentioned Pastor Doug. 00:35:13.01\00:35:14.31 So, you don't have to worry. 00:35:14.34\00:35:15.58 You're not going to have to flee to some island or some mountain, 00:35:15.61\00:35:17.55 and suddenly you have it disappear and then you still 00:35:17.58\00:35:20.15 have to find a different place to live. 00:35:20.18\00:35:21.48 No, when the islands are disappear and the mountains 00:35:21.52\00:35:24.39 collapse, well that means you've been transported to heaven if 00:35:24.42\00:35:26.86 you're saved. 00:35:26.89\00:35:28.29 Doug: At that point. 00:35:28.32\00:35:29.66 Jëan: All right, thank you, Maurice. 00:35:29.69\00:35:31.03 We've got Joshua in New Jersey. 00:35:31.06\00:35:32.39 Joshua, welcome to the program. 00:35:32.43\00:35:33.83 Joshua: Thanks, pastors, God bless you. 00:35:33.86\00:35:36.53 Doug: Thank you. 00:35:36.56\00:35:37.87 Joshua: Here's my question. 00:35:37.90\00:35:39.20 So, the Bible calls us to be sober, right? 00:35:39.23\00:35:40.57 Throughout the entire New Testament. 00:35:40.60\00:35:42.24 But in 1 Timothy 5:23, Paul says, "Drink no longer water, 00:35:42.27\00:35:48.14 but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine 00:35:48.18\00:35:51.78 often infirmities." 00:35:51.81\00:35:53.62 And so, is Paul referring to new wine or fermented wine? 00:35:53.65\00:35:58.05 Doug: Well I'm guessing that he's talking about new wine, 00:35:58.09\00:36:03.22 which grape juice actually has antiseptic properties. 00:36:03.26\00:36:07.03 A lot of the water in ancient times, they, you know, they 00:36:07.03\00:36:09.83 often shared the streets with the animals and 00:36:09.86\00:36:12.80 animals--sometimes the wells became contaminated. 00:36:12.83\00:36:16.37 They had a lot of dysentery problems, but the juice that 00:36:16.40\00:36:19.27 came from the grape, you could trust it and it actually would 00:36:19.31\00:36:23.78 kill some germs and bacteria. 00:36:23.81\00:36:26.41 So, it didn't need to be alcoholic for that. 00:36:26.45\00:36:30.25 It's hard to imagine Paul recommending, "Don't drink 00:36:30.29\00:36:32.89 water, but drink booze." 00:36:32.92\00:36:35.02 So, I think he's saying drink grape juice. 00:36:35.06\00:36:37.89 Now, keep in mind in Bible times, grape juice, you know, 00:36:37.93\00:36:41.73 they squeeze it out during the harvest. 00:36:41.76\00:36:44.67 Sometimes they would condense it for transportation to make it 00:36:44.70\00:36:47.27 lighter, then they'd add water later to reconstitute it. 00:36:47.30\00:36:51.41 But they didn't have little labels on the wine skins that 00:36:51.44\00:36:56.08 said this is 1% alcohol, 2% alcohol. 00:36:56.11\00:36:59.78 So, you know, as time went by, sometimes it would become old 00:36:59.81\00:37:02.88 wine, and it would expand, and that's why Jesus said, "You 00:37:02.92\00:37:05.95 don't put new wine in old wine skins" because they'll quickly 00:37:05.99\00:37:09.56 expand from fermentation and burst. 00:37:09.59\00:37:12.06 It wasn't a precise science in Bible times, but I'm pretty sure 00:37:12.09\00:37:15.46 Paul is recommending a new wine. 00:37:15.50\00:37:17.33 And I got a book on Christian and alcohol. 00:37:17.37\00:37:19.27 I think talks about that. 00:37:19.30\00:37:20.64 Jëan: We do, yes, and we'll be happy to send that to 00:37:20.67\00:37:22.27 anyone who calls and asks. 00:37:22.30\00:37:23.64 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:37:23.67\00:37:26.07 You can ask for the book. 00:37:26.11\00:37:27.44 It's called "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:37:27.48\00:37:29.24 You can dial #250 on your smartphone, and you can ask for 00:37:29.28\00:37:32.85 it that way as well. 00:37:32.88\00:37:34.45 Take advantage of it. It's free. 00:37:34.48\00:37:36.58 Next caller that we have is Dr. Latif in Michigan. 00:37:36.62\00:37:40.16 Dr. Latif, are you there? 00:37:40.19\00:37:42.39 Dr. Latif: Yes. 00:37:42.42\00:37:43.76 Good evening, pastor. 00:37:43.79\00:37:45.23 Thank you for taking my call. 00:37:45.26\00:37:48.06 My question is, at what age or stage did the Lord Jesus 00:37:48.10\00:37:55.24 recognize who He was and what was His mission and what was 00:37:55.27\00:38:01.34 facing Him? 00:38:01.38\00:38:02.68 Is it age 12 or age 30 or later on? 00:38:02.71\00:38:08.25 Thank you for taking my call. 00:38:08.28\00:38:10.75 Doug: Great question. 00:38:10.79\00:38:12.09 At what point, you know, Jesus as a baby, clearly did not 00:38:12.12\00:38:14.96 toddle around and say, "I'm the son of God, and I've come to die 00:38:14.99\00:38:17.69 for the sins of the world." 00:38:17.73\00:38:19.29 But as His mind developed as in, you know, He was a human. 00:38:19.33\00:38:22.23 As his mind developed and His divine mission became clear, I'm 00:38:22.26\00:38:27.27 sure He was spirit-filled as John the Baptist was. 00:38:27.30\00:38:30.47 It seems that we don't know this for sure, but the closest we can 00:38:30.51\00:38:34.21 come is when He was 12 and He went to the temple, and He was 00:38:34.24\00:38:37.78 asking questions and answering, and the leaders and the 00:38:37.81\00:38:43.35 religious teachers marveled at His answers. 00:38:43.39\00:38:45.49 You can't help but wonder, was Gamaliel in the group that day, 00:38:45.52\00:38:48.66 because later He was much older when the disciples were being 00:38:48.69\00:38:51.99 tried and they heard this answer--these answers. 00:38:52.03\00:38:57.00 And when His parents came and said, "Why did You leave us? 00:38:57.03\00:38:59.53 We didn't know where You were." 00:38:59.57\00:39:01.00 He said, "Wist ye not I must be about My Father's business." 00:39:01.04\00:39:04.67 I think when Jesus went to the Passover at 12, today when a 00:39:04.71\00:39:08.81 Jewish boy is 13, they're bar mitzvahed. 00:39:08.84\00:39:11.45 In Christ's time, it was 12 years old. 00:39:11.48\00:39:13.68 And so, He went, and I think it became clear to Him that, 00:39:13.72\00:39:17.99 through the Holy Spirit, He saw the sacrificial system and the 00:39:18.02\00:39:20.42 light dawned on His mind that that was His special mission 00:39:20.46\00:39:23.46 that He had been called. 00:39:23.49\00:39:25.36 It doesn't say that explicitly, but I think from the context, He 00:39:25.39\00:39:29.03 was 12 when it began to dawn on Him. 00:39:29.06\00:39:31.17 Jëan: And definitely when He began his public ministry at the 00:39:31.20\00:39:33.57 age of 30, He was baptized and He went to the wilderness. 00:39:33.60\00:39:36.20 It was very evident cause immediately after that, the 00:39:36.24\00:39:39.61 first miracle we have recorded is where Jesus turned the water 00:39:39.64\00:39:42.58 into wine at the wedding. 00:39:42.61\00:39:43.95 And at that point, His mother said to Him, you know, "The wine 00:39:43.98\00:39:47.02 has failed." 00:39:47.05\00:39:48.38 And Jesus said, "My hour has not yet come." 00:39:48.42\00:39:50.82 He did help, you know, He did the miracle, but He was very 00:39:50.85\00:39:54.22 aware of the timing. 00:39:54.26\00:39:56.22 So, the whole mission was laid out at that point. 00:39:56.26\00:39:58.89 Doug: Yeah, good point. 00:39:58.93\00:40:00.26 Jëan: All right, thank you, Dr. Latif. 00:40:00.30\00:40:01.60 Now we got David in California. 00:40:01.63\00:40:03.43 David, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:40:03.47\00:40:05.33 David: Thank you. 00:40:05.37\00:40:06.67 Thanks for putting on the program too. 00:40:06.70\00:40:08.00 I really appreciate it. 00:40:08.04\00:40:09.37 Doug: Thank you. 00:40:09.40\00:40:10.74 David: Question is--I was writing--I'm writing up a Bible 00:40:10.77\00:40:12.21 study for the Three Angels message, 00:40:12.24\00:40:13.91 so I was studying up on it. 00:40:13.94\00:40:16.34 My question is on Revelation 14:9. 00:40:16.38\00:40:21.25 Now, in King James, it says, "His mark in his forehead or in 00:40:21.28\00:40:27.56 his hand," but on my New King James and I looked at five other 00:40:27.59\00:40:31.76 versions, they all have on forehead or on your hand. 00:40:31.79\00:40:37.00 So, how do I explain that to somebody or which one do I use 00:40:37.03\00:40:39.47 because to me in and on are completely different? 00:40:39.50\00:40:42.60 Doug: Yeah, well I'll say something. 00:40:42.64\00:40:44.77 Pastor Ross probably has a lot more he can add, but to 00:40:44.81\00:40:49.81 understand Revelation, you need to go back in the Bible. 00:40:49.84\00:40:53.55 And most of the keys for understanding these things are 00:40:53.58\00:40:56.28 found in the Old Testament. 00:40:56.32\00:40:58.22 Moses, when he gave his great sermon at the end of his life in 00:40:58.25\00:41:01.62 Deuteronomy, and he gives the Great Shema, "Hear, O Israel, 00:41:01.66\00:41:04.99 the Lord our God is one. 00:41:05.03\00:41:06.36 Thou shalt love the Lord with all your heart." 00:41:06.39\00:41:08.36 He had just finished quoting the 10 Commandments in chapter 5. In 00:41:08.40\00:41:11.07 chapter 6, he says, "These words that I command you shall be in 00:41:11.10\00:41:14.80 your heart," and he says, in there. 00:41:14.84\00:41:17.04 And he said, "You shall write them for a sign on your hand, 00:41:17.07\00:41:20.78 and they shall be frontlesss between your eyes." 00:41:20.81\00:41:23.58 All three are figures. 00:41:23.61\00:41:25.21 One place that says, you know, between your eyes, on your hand, 00:41:25.25\00:41:27.58 in your heart. 00:41:27.62\00:41:28.92 I don't think the emphasis is, you know, was it on, was it in? 00:41:28.95\00:41:32.89 I think the emphasis is that it's talking about the law of 00:41:32.92\00:41:36.22 God as a symbol in the heart, in the actions, that's in the hand, 00:41:36.26\00:41:39.96 in the mind. 00:41:40.00\00:41:42.40 Some people have tried to make it out that the mark of the 00:41:42.43\00:41:45.13 beast is like a tattoo. 00:41:45.17\00:41:46.53 I think one paraphrase, it might be the Good News Bible, and 00:41:46.57\00:41:49.80 that's a terrible misreading of what it actually says. 00:41:49.84\00:41:53.04 It's not a tattoo on the hand. 00:41:53.07\00:41:55.38 And that's confused a lot of people. 00:41:55.41\00:41:57.65 It's basically in the original--I think it's a mark in 00:41:57.68\00:42:00.18 the hand, meaning it's in your actions, it's in your thoughts. 00:42:00.22\00:42:03.82 Jëan: And the word that's used there for the word mark in the 00:42:03.85\00:42:06.69 original Greek is "charakter." 00:42:06.72\00:42:09.02 And we get the English word character from the 00:42:09.06\00:42:11.59 Greek "charakter." 00:42:11.63\00:42:12.93 But it has the idea of a seal. 00:42:12.96\00:42:15.56 So, you know, back in Bible times, they'd carve out a seal 00:42:15.60\00:42:18.13 out of stone or out of wood, and they'd put wax and then impress 00:42:18.17\00:42:22.27 that seal on that wax. 00:42:22.30\00:42:24.04 So in one sense, it was in the wax, but it was also on the wax. 00:42:24.07\00:42:28.74 So, to have the mark of the beast, it's not just on the 00:42:28.78\00:42:31.05 forehead, but it's in the forehead, you might say. 00:42:31.08\00:42:34.68 It has to do with character, it has to do with will, it has to 00:42:34.72\00:42:37.05 do with choice. 00:42:37.09\00:42:38.42 And of course, it's symbolic. 00:42:38.45\00:42:39.79 There's not only the mark of the beast, but there's also the seal 00:42:39.82\00:42:41.89 of God. 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.26 And seal and mark are used interchangeably. 00:42:43.29\00:42:45.49 You'll find in the Old Testament that God's people are marked in 00:42:45.53\00:42:48.43 the forehead. 00:42:48.46\00:42:49.80 So, you can go back and forth. 00:42:49.83\00:42:51.20 So, yes, it has to do with the mind. 00:42:51.23\00:42:52.87 Doug: Now try and remember it in the New King James version, 00:42:52.90\00:42:54.47 does it say the seal of God is in? 00:42:54.50\00:42:56.07 Jëan: I believe it says on in the New King James. 00:42:56.10\00:42:58.81 Doug: All right, so there you have it. 00:42:58.84\00:43:00.34 It's got everybody going around with a mark on their forehead. 00:43:00.38\00:43:03.35 That can't be what it's talking about. 00:43:03.38\00:43:04.71 It's got to be a symbol. 00:43:04.75\00:43:06.05 Jëan: It's a symbol, yeah. 00:43:06.08\00:43:07.42 So, the New King James says on the forehead, the King James 00:43:07.45\00:43:10.05 says in the forehead, but again, it's the idea of that seal that 00:43:10.09\00:43:13.05 was impressed upon the mind, upon the heart. 00:43:13.09\00:43:16.42 All right, thank you, David. 00:43:16.46\00:43:17.79 We've got Anthony in Michigan. 00:43:17.83\00:43:19.16 Anthony, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:43:19.19\00:43:20.50 Anthony: Hi, my question was--it's kind of trivial, but 00:43:20.53\00:43:25.43 in the new Jerusalem, do you think that there will be the 00:43:25.47\00:43:28.17 activity of horseplay? 00:43:28.20\00:43:30.21 I'm wondering cause it's like a harmless activity that could 00:43:30.24\00:43:33.88 turn into a conflict, but at the same time, I would think that we 00:43:33.91\00:43:36.98 would have the maturity to certainly never let that happen 00:43:37.01\00:43:39.85 if we were to partake in something like that. 00:43:39.88\00:43:42.35 Doug: Yeah, no, it's a good question in heaven. 00:43:42.38\00:43:44.29 Well, first of all, we're on holy ground when we talk about 00:43:44.32\00:43:47.22 heaven, because Paul said, "The eye has not seen, the ear has 00:43:47.26\00:43:51.03 not heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the 00:43:51.06\00:43:53.66 things that God has prepared for those that love Him." 00:43:53.70\00:43:56.73 So, there's a lot--it's going to be bigger, better, more 00:43:56.77\00:43:59.60 beautiful, just conceptually so different from what we can 00:43:59.63\00:44:02.57 even imagine. 00:44:02.60\00:44:03.94 But will there be play? 00:44:03.97\00:44:05.41 And I'm trying to remember, I think it's Zephaniah and a 00:44:05.44\00:44:08.48 couple of verses says, "Children will be playing in the streets." 00:44:08.51\00:44:12.98 And so, there are children. 00:44:13.01\00:44:14.95 It says that, "A child will play on the hole of the 00:44:14.98\00:44:18.15 venomous serpent." 00:44:18.19\00:44:19.49 That's in Isaiah maybe verse--chapter chapter 11. 00:44:19.52\00:44:22.22 "It will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountains." 00:44:22.26\00:44:24.43 So, it does say in at least two verses that children will be 00:44:24.46\00:44:28.16 playing in heaven, and that's a happy thing, you know. 00:44:28.20\00:44:31.83 One of the signs of peace in a kingdom or a neighborhood is 00:44:31.87\00:44:34.84 when children are out playing with each other. 00:44:34.87\00:44:37.34 It's just like when you see puppies and calves kicking up 00:44:37.37\00:44:39.54 their heels in the field. 00:44:39.57\00:44:41.08 God has made them to run and to play. 00:44:41.11\00:44:43.88 And so, will it ever turn into conflict or violence? 00:44:43.91\00:44:47.65 Not in heaven. 00:44:47.68\00:44:49.02 No, never. 00:44:49.05\00:44:50.39 It'll be joyful. 00:44:50.42\00:44:51.75 Jëan: Yeah, the verses you referred to there, Pastor Doug, 00:44:51.79\00:44:53.86 you mentioned, Isaiah chapter 11, talks about the children 00:44:53.89\00:44:57.06 playing, Zechariah 8:5, talks about the children playing in 00:44:57.09\00:45:01.06 the streets. 00:45:01.10\00:45:02.43 So, there are different references to that. 00:45:02.46\00:45:03.77 Yeah. 00:45:03.80\00:45:05.13 Good question. 00:45:05.17\00:45:06.47 Thank you, Anthony. 00:45:06.50\00:45:07.84 Next caller that we have is Robert in Washington. 00:45:07.87\00:45:09.17 Robert, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:45:09.20\00:45:10.54 Robert: Good evening. 00:45:10.57\00:45:11.94 Doug: Good evening. Thanks for calling. 00:45:11.97\00:45:14.98 Robert: I was going to ask the question. 00:45:15.01\00:45:17.25 You've probably heard that there's a church that teaches, 00:45:17.28\00:45:20.82 believes that we were in heaven before we were born kind 00:45:20.85\00:45:26.02 of thing. 00:45:26.05\00:45:27.39 And I'm wanting to know--that they used this verse, and I'm 00:45:27.42\00:45:32.83 wanting to know what you think about it. 00:45:32.86\00:45:35.13 John chapter 9, verses 1 and 2, 00:45:35.16\00:45:37.83 "Now as Jesus passed by, He saw 00:45:37.87\00:45:39.63 a man who was blind from birth. 00:45:39.67\00:45:42.00 And His disciples asked Him, 00:45:42.04\00:45:44.14 saying, 'Rabbi, who sinned. 00:45:44.17\00:45:46.14 This man or his parents that, he was born blind?'" 00:45:46.17\00:45:51.21 Doug: Yeah, how could he have sinned to be born blind? 00:45:51.25\00:45:56.25 And the way that the Jews understood it is that because 00:45:56.28\00:46:00.19 God is all knowing, God knew this man was going to sin 00:46:00.22\00:46:03.66 in advance. 00:46:03.69\00:46:05.03 And so, he punished him in advance. 00:46:05.06\00:46:07.00 It wasn't saying that he had lived in a prior life. 00:46:07.03\00:46:09.86 Their idea was not that, you know, he had been reincarnated 00:46:09.90\00:46:13.74 in some way, but that because God is all knowing, He knew this 00:46:13.77\00:46:17.17 man was going to turn towards wickedness and so he got 00:46:17.21\00:46:19.21 punished in advance. 00:46:19.24\00:46:20.94 That's bad theology, but there was a lot of things that the 00:46:20.98\00:46:24.35 religious leaders had adopted that were not good theology in 00:46:24.38\00:46:27.95 the time of Christ and that's why Jesus spent so much time 00:46:27.98\00:46:30.99 trying to straighten them out. 00:46:31.02\00:46:32.42 Jëan: And of course, they also believed that you were alive in 00:46:32.45\00:46:34.96 your mother's womb. 00:46:34.99\00:46:36.22 And the question is, well, did he sin from his mother's womb 00:46:36.26\00:46:39.46 before he was actually born? 00:46:39.49\00:46:41.00 And that's why they were so puzzled by this. 00:46:41.03\00:46:43.33 They said, "Lord, how could this be? 00:46:43.37\00:46:44.67 Did he sin? Did his mother sin? 00:46:44.70\00:46:46.17 I mean, well, what happened?" 00:46:46.20\00:46:48.04 Doug: And keep in mind, Jesus's answer is no. 00:46:48.07\00:46:50.04 He said, "Neither this man's sin, nor his mother's, but that 00:46:50.07\00:46:52.61 that God might be glorified." 00:46:52.64\00:46:54.34 So, yeah, Jesus didn't say, "Yeah, in his prior life, he was 00:46:54.38\00:46:56.98 really bad, so he's catching it now." 00:46:57.01\00:46:59.25 If Christ had said something, then we'd have more pause 00:46:59.28\00:47:02.05 for questioning. 00:47:02.08\00:47:03.39 But, you know, Jesus brushed that aside. 00:47:03.42\00:47:05.82 Jëan: All right, very good. 00:47:05.85\00:47:07.19 Lenore in Arizona. 00:47:07.22\00:47:08.56 Lenore, welcome to the program. 00:47:08.59\00:47:09.89 Lenore: Thank you. 00:47:09.92\00:47:11.66 My question is, if Moses, or when Moses wrote the first five 00:47:11.69\00:47:17.03 books of the Bible, I would like to know in his short life, as we 00:47:17.07\00:47:22.40 would call it, how would he have enough time to write personal 00:47:22.44\00:47:26.64 things about certain events and he wrote thousands and thousands 00:47:26.68\00:47:32.48 and thousands of words. 00:47:32.51\00:47:34.18 And what did he write on? 00:47:34.22\00:47:35.98 How could he write all that? 00:47:36.02\00:47:38.19 Doug: All right, good. 00:47:38.22\00:47:39.55 Well keep in mind, Moses lived 120 years. 00:47:39.59\00:47:42.09 Moses was also educated in one of the most advanced 00:47:42.12\00:47:45.83 civilizations in the world. 00:47:45.86\00:47:47.20 He spent 40 years in Egypt before he fled into 00:47:47.23\00:47:49.46 the wilderness. 00:47:49.50\00:47:50.83 Certainly he knew how to read and write, and the Egyptians 00:47:50.87\00:47:54.27 also had mastered paper. 00:47:54.30\00:47:56.44 It was called papyrus. 00:47:56.47\00:47:58.24 And so, with simple ink, they would make ink out of an oil 00:47:58.27\00:48:02.08 and charcoal. 00:48:02.11\00:48:03.45 They could make a simple black ink. 00:48:03.48\00:48:04.88 Moses could have easily written. 00:48:04.91\00:48:07.05 And the first book that he wrote was probably the book of Job. 00:48:07.08\00:48:10.79 And the book of Job is telling about, you know, this great 00:48:10.82\00:48:13.46 battle between good and evil. 00:48:13.49\00:48:15.22 And then Moses probably wrote the book, well, it says he wrote 00:48:15.26\00:48:18.26 the book of Genesis. 00:48:18.29\00:48:19.79 And I'm guessing that Moses was relating what he had received 00:48:19.83\00:48:25.00 through the Holy Spirit and through oral tradition being 00:48:25.03\00:48:28.17 passed down. 00:48:28.20\00:48:29.50 Keep in mind, they had almost photographic memories back then, 00:48:29.54\00:48:33.38 and they would pass down the holy truth about origins. 00:48:33.41\00:48:37.41 And Moses recorded them guided by the Spirit to make sure it 00:48:37.45\00:48:40.75 was all accurate. 00:48:40.78\00:48:42.02 So, he had plenty of time in the wilderness, 40 years, before he 00:48:42.05\00:48:45.09 even went to Egypt to lead the children of Israel out. 00:48:45.12\00:48:47.99 So, he had 40 years in the wilderness with papyrus and 00:48:48.02\00:48:52.39 whatever you would need to do that writing. 00:48:52.43\00:48:54.66 Jëan: And then, of course, from Exodus onwards, that's actually 00:48:54.73\00:48:58.17 real time. 00:48:58.20\00:48:59.53 So, Moses could be writing down as the events are happening. 00:48:59.57\00:49:01.77 He's recording different things. 00:49:01.80\00:49:03.54 There are some portions that maybe he had a scribe after the 00:49:03.57\00:49:07.48 fact where it talks about Moses's death and when it 00:49:07.51\00:49:09.84 talks about-- 00:49:09.88\00:49:11.21 Doug: Yeah, Joshua may have written that. 00:49:11.25\00:49:12.55 Jëan: Joshua or somebody probably finished it off, but 00:49:12.58\00:49:13.88 without a doubt, the bulk of the writing of those books were 00:49:13.92\00:49:16.85 by Moses. 00:49:16.89\00:49:18.55 All right, thank you. Good question. 00:49:18.59\00:49:21.22 Tricia from Montana. Tricia, welcome to the program. 00:49:21.26\00:49:23.96 Tricia: Okay, thanks. 00:49:23.99\00:49:25.29 I just have always assumed God was--is a man. 00:49:25.33\00:49:31.40 Jesus tells us to pray, "Our Father, which art in heaven." 00:49:31.43\00:49:36.77 A church member said that they don't know what gender God is, 00:49:36.81\00:49:40.81 so I just wanted to clarify. 00:49:40.84\00:49:43.28 Doug: Yeah, well if you're going to use the Bible as your guide, 00:49:43.31\00:49:48.05 the Lord typically refers to Himself in a patriarchal sense, 00:49:48.08\00:49:52.65 as opposed to a matriarchal sense. 00:49:52.69\00:49:55.26 So, you know, God is referred to as our Father. 00:49:55.29\00:49:59.09 They use the word He when referring to the Lord as 00:49:59.13\00:50:02.26 opposed--doesn't ever refer to God as she. 00:50:02.30\00:50:04.80 I'm not trying to be misogynistic. 00:50:04.83\00:50:08.27 I'm just saying this is what the Bible says. 00:50:08.30\00:50:10.81 And, you know, we can't be changing the words of scripture. 00:50:10.84\00:50:13.48 Now does the Lord have some of the same love as a woman? 00:50:13.51\00:50:18.05 Well, yeah. 00:50:18.08\00:50:19.38 The Bible says that, you know, as a mother loves her children, 00:50:19.41\00:50:23.25 and can a woman forget her loving or her nursing children? 00:50:23.28\00:50:26.09 God says, "I will not forget you." 00:50:26.12\00:50:27.99 And Jesus said, "I would have gathered you under My wings as 00:50:28.02\00:50:30.83 a hen." 00:50:30.86\00:50:32.19 That's a female chicken, under her wings. 00:50:32.23\00:50:34.20 He--so, you know, there's attributes where God talks about 00:50:34.23\00:50:38.73 the love of a mother, and He compares it to His love. 00:50:38.77\00:50:41.60 But for the most part, God seems to identify Himself and man 00:50:41.64\00:50:45.44 being made in the image of God and woman was after that. 00:50:45.47\00:50:51.18 I think we're missing something when we try to--first of all, I 00:50:51.21\00:50:55.38 want to spend a lot of time thinking about God's gender 00:50:55.42\00:50:57.79 plumbing because I'm sure that it's nothing like what we're 00:50:57.82\00:51:00.49 imagining or what we deal with on earth, but He does identify 00:51:00.52\00:51:04.79 Himself in the masculine in the Bible. 00:51:04.83\00:51:06.63 So, let's accept that and not try and rewrite it based on 00:51:06.66\00:51:10.37 cultural, social changes right now. 00:51:10.40\00:51:14.44 Jëan: All right, thank you. 00:51:14.47\00:51:15.77 Our next call that we have is Juan in Ohio. 00:51:15.80\00:51:17.94 Juan, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:51:17.97\00:51:19.47 Juan: Hey, good evening, guys. 00:51:19.51\00:51:20.88 Doug: Evening. 00:51:20.91\00:51:22.24 Juan: I was watching this new series "House of David" on 00:51:22.28\00:51:25.28 Amazon Prime. 00:51:25.31\00:51:26.61 It seems to indicate that he--that his parents are not his 00:51:26.65\00:51:31.35 real parents and I can't find any verse in the Bible that 00:51:31.39\00:51:36.86 proves that. 00:51:36.89\00:51:38.36 Doug: Yeah. 00:51:38.39\00:51:39.73 Well I haven't seen the series you're talking about, but I can 00:51:39.76\00:51:42.80 be very careful about basing your theology on Hollywood's 00:51:42.83\00:51:46.57 Creed of license. 00:51:46.60\00:51:49.04 David, it tells us as plainly as it tells us anything else in the 00:51:49.07\00:51:52.87 Bible that his father was Jesse. 00:51:52.91\00:51:57.08 It refers to his father and mother many times and he had 00:51:57.11\00:52:03.49 seven brothers and one sister. 00:52:03.52\00:52:07.02 Talks about Joab, Asahel, and, was it Abishai, the sons of 00:52:07.06\00:52:12.96 Joab, the son of Zeruiah. 00:52:12.99\00:52:15.26 Doug: Yeah, that was David's sister, I think. 00:52:15.30\00:52:16.87 Yeah, Zeruiah. 00:52:16.90\00:52:19.23 So, he's got one sister, brothers. 00:52:19.27\00:52:21.97 When Samuel comes to anoint him as King, Samuel says, "Do you 00:52:22.00\00:52:27.01 have any other sons?" 00:52:27.04\00:52:28.34 He said, "I got one more, the youngest, he's sort of a 00:52:28.38\00:52:29.98 daydreamer," and they bring him in, and everything makes it very 00:52:30.01\00:52:32.58 clear that they were his real parents. 00:52:32.61\00:52:35.08 You even find it in the book of Ruth that David is the great 00:52:35.12\00:52:38.62 grandson of Ruth and Boaz. 00:52:38.65\00:52:40.66 So, if they're making this stuff up in Hollywood trying to make 00:52:40.69\00:52:44.66 the story more interesting, first of all, I don't think it 00:52:44.69\00:52:47.76 does make it more interesting, but oh, I've said enough. 00:52:47.76\00:52:50.77 Jëan: And then also in the genealogy that you read in the 00:52:50.80\00:52:52.67 New Testament, it traces all the way to Matthew. 00:52:52.70\00:52:54.54 Doug: Chapter 1 of Matthew. 00:52:54.57\00:52:55.87 Jëan: Yep, all the way back to David and Jesse and so on. 00:52:55.90\00:52:57.61 Yeah, pretty clear. 00:52:57.64\00:52:59.27 All right, thank you. 00:52:59.31\00:53:00.78 Chloe, age eight, listening in Ohio. 00:53:00.81\00:53:03.01 Chloe, welcome to the program. 00:53:03.04\00:53:04.85 Chloe: Hi, thank you. 00:53:04.88\00:53:06.75 Doug: Hi, thanks for calling. 00:53:06.78\00:53:09.52 Chloe: When we get to heaven, will we wear crowns? 00:53:09.55\00:53:13.69 Doug: The Bible does tell us that we will have crowns 00:53:13.72\00:53:16.19 in heaven. 00:53:16.22\00:53:17.56 And it tells us in Revelation that there--they'll be 00:53:17.59\00:53:21.03 given crowns. 00:53:21.06\00:53:22.46 And some people will have stars in their crowns. 00:53:22.50\00:53:25.73 I think it tells us that in Daniel chapter 12. 00:53:25.77\00:53:28.14 They will--those who turn others to righteousness will be like 00:53:28.17\00:53:30.74 the stars forever and ever. 00:53:30.77\00:53:32.54 And you've got that verse here, Pastor Ross, where he talks 00:53:32.57\00:53:35.54 about the crowns in Revelation? 00:53:35.58\00:53:37.15 Jëan: Yeah, well Paul says in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verse 8, 00:53:37.18\00:53:40.28 that, "There is a crown of righteousness laid up not only 00:53:40.32\00:53:43.62 for him, but for all of those at the second coming of Christ." 00:53:43.65\00:53:46.99 James speaks about a crown, "Blessed are those who face 00:53:47.02\00:53:50.16 temptation," or endure a temptation, "they'll receive a 00:53:50.19\00:53:53.16 crown of life." 00:53:53.19\00:53:55.36 1 Peter talks about a crown. 00:53:55.40\00:53:56.87 So, there's a lot of--I'm just looking at-- 00:53:56.90\00:53:58.27 Doug: In Revelation, doesn't Jesus say, "Don't let anyone 00:53:58.30\00:54:00.14 take your crown?" 00:54:00.17\00:54:01.47 Jëan: Yeah, that's right. 00:54:01.50\00:54:02.84 Jesus says to the church of, which one is it? 00:54:02.87\00:54:04.27 I forget. 00:54:04.31\00:54:05.64 One of the churches, "Don't let anyone take your crown." 00:54:05.67\00:54:07.01 I think it's Sardis. 00:54:07.04\00:54:08.38 Doug: There's lots of crowns that it's pretty clear. 00:54:08.41\00:54:10.85 Now you don't have to wear your crown all the time, but, you 00:54:10.88\00:54:15.25 know, you may want to go climb a tree and play with your friends 00:54:15.28\00:54:17.59 and not have your crown on. 00:54:17.62\00:54:19.09 You may want to take it and cast it at Jesus's feet when you 00:54:19.12\00:54:21.62 see Him. 00:54:21.66\00:54:22.99 But yeah, crowns are going to be real in heaven. 00:54:23.02\00:54:24.96 Yeah, let me see if we can get another question in 00:54:24.99\00:54:26.66 here, pastor. 00:54:26.70\00:54:28.00 Jëan: Oh we got Ruben in New Jersey. 00:54:28.03\00:54:29.33 Ruben, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:54:29.36\00:54:30.67 Ruben: Good evening, pastors. 00:54:30.70\00:54:32.03 My question is, why did some of the--some of God's people in the 00:54:32.07\00:54:37.41 Old Testament have more than one wife, like Solomon? 00:54:37.44\00:54:41.41 And I know that Solomon heard the book of Genesis where it 00:54:41.44\00:54:45.21 says that Adam and Eve became one flesh. 00:54:45.25\00:54:47.95 The question is why did God didn't tell them that it 00:54:47.98\00:54:50.22 was wrong? 00:54:50.25\00:54:52.05 Doug: Well I think God did tell them in the writings of Moses, 00:54:52.09\00:54:57.19 and I forget the verse Pastor Ross when it says, "These are 00:54:57.23\00:54:59.36 the rules about a king, he will not multiply horses from Egypt, 00:54:59.39\00:55:02.46 and he will not multiply wives." 00:55:02.50\00:55:05.33 So, Solomon did everything wrong he could do, but, you know, not 00:55:05.37\00:55:08.87 just Solomon is always the example people look at cause he 00:55:08.90\00:55:11.24 had like hundreds. 00:55:11.27\00:55:12.67 One reason that kings did that, it was a custom, and Solomon was 00:55:12.71\00:55:15.81 following the custom of the times that a king wanting to 00:55:15.84\00:55:19.05 make sure that his monarchy lasted. 00:55:19.08\00:55:21.55 He would have lots of sons, and they would have different 00:55:21.58\00:55:24.15 appointments in the kingdom and different office, and you could 00:55:24.19\00:55:26.89 guarantee that your name would be carried on. 00:55:26.92\00:55:30.03 David, I think, had like ten concubines and five wives. 00:55:30.06\00:55:34.56 And Jacob, of course, he only wanted one wife, he only wanted 00:55:34.56\00:55:38.17 Rachel, but he ended up with three extra ones. 00:55:38.20\00:55:41.77 Jëan: Of course Deuteronomy 17:17 is the counsel that was 00:55:41.80\00:55:45.01 given to kings not to multiply unto themselves wives because 00:55:45.04\00:55:48.18 it'll turn their hearts away from God. 00:55:48.21\00:55:49.94 Well that's what happened. 00:55:49.98\00:55:51.28 Doug: That's what happened with Solomon. 00:55:51.31\00:55:53.01 And Jesus said, "No man can serve two masters." 00:55:53.05\00:55:55.88 So, it's pretty clear that a man should only have one wife. 00:55:55.92\00:56:00.06 So, this was, you know, clearly God's plan. 00:56:00.09\00:56:02.76 In Bible times, a lot of men went to war and there was a lot 00:56:02.79\00:56:07.03 of mortality and often after years of war, you might have 00:56:07.10\00:56:12.13 seven women for each man. 00:56:12.17\00:56:15.57 That's why you've got that verse in Isaiah that said, "In that 00:56:15.60\00:56:19.24 day seven women," that's Isaiah chapter 4, verse 1, I believe. 00:56:19.27\00:56:23.04 "Seven women will lay hold of one man, saying, 'We will eat 00:56:23.08\00:56:26.78 our own bread, we will wear our own apparel; Only let us be 00:56:26.82\00:56:30.25 called by your name, to take away our reproach.'" 00:56:30.29\00:56:32.32 So many men had been killed off by the wars that men often would 00:56:32.82\00:56:36.83 take many wives to help make sure that they had offspring, 00:56:36.86\00:56:40.26 take care of them in old age. 00:56:40.30\00:56:42.06 It was their social security. 00:56:42.10\00:56:44.07 Jëan: Well Pastor Doug, we're going to take some of our email 00:56:44.10\00:56:46.94 questions the folks have sent to us here. 00:56:46.97\00:56:49.27 And if you'd like to send us an email question, just simply 00:56:49.30\00:56:52.24 email balquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:56:52.27\00:56:56.34 All right, Pastor Doug, first question that we have, when Mary 00:56:56.38\00:57:01.15 received the Holy Spirit and Jesus was born to her, 00:57:01.18\00:57:04.22 obviously, Christ is a divine being, did that somehow make 00:57:04.25\00:57:07.79 Mary divine? 00:57:07.82\00:57:09.29 Doug: No. 00:57:09.32\00:57:10.66 And, you know, God had His presence in the 00:57:10.69\00:57:13.50 middle of Israel. 00:57:13.53\00:57:14.83 They didn't all become divine. 00:57:14.83\00:57:17.60 When we get the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as long as we walk 00:57:17.63\00:57:20.37 with the Lord, God's in us, but we don't become gods. 00:57:20.40\00:57:23.47 And so, when Mary was chosen to be a vehicle for bringing God's 00:57:23.51\00:57:28.38 son into the world, Jesus was also fully human, so that part 00:57:28.41\00:57:31.45 of Him wasn't Mary. 00:57:31.48\00:57:32.81 He was born like other children are born. 00:57:32.85\00:57:34.35 So, it didn't turn her into a god. 00:57:34.38\00:57:36.18 Nowhere does the Bible say we should worship her, anywhere. 00:57:36.22\00:57:39.22 Jëan: Another question that we have, the Bible tells us that we 00:57:39.25\00:57:41.39 need to pray for others, but it also says that we have freedom 00:57:41.42\00:57:44.46 of choice. 00:57:44.49\00:57:45.83 So what difference do our prayers make? 00:57:45.86\00:57:47.66 Doug: Yeah. 00:57:47.66\00:57:48.96 Well it is true that people have freedom of choice, but by our 00:57:49.00\00:57:50.80 intercession for others, I believe it frees the Holy Spirit 00:57:50.83\00:57:54.37 and God to work in their lives through others, through 00:57:54.40\00:57:56.77 providence in ways that would not happen if we did not pray. 00:57:56.81\00:58:00.74 So, by all means, friends, intercede for the ones that you 00:58:00.78\00:58:03.58 love because God will work in their lives. 00:58:03.61\00:58:05.78 Jesus prayed for us, we should pray for others as well. 00:58:05.81\00:58:08.28 God bless. We'll study together next week. 00:58:08.32\00:58:10.02 male announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:58:13.02\00:58:15.59 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:58:15.62\00:58:19.29 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by "Amazing Facts 00:58:19.33\00:58:22.26 International," a faith-based ministry located 00:58:22.30\00:58:25.47 in Granite Bay, California. 00:58:25.50\00:58:27.30
