male announcer: It is the bestselling book in history. 00:00:03.06\00:00:05.70 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, and its 00:00:05.73\00:00:10.17 words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, should 00:00:10.21\00:00:14.31 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.34\00:00:16.48 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.51\00:00:19.95 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate and practical 00:00:19.98\00:00:24.59 answers to all your Bible questions. 00:00:24.62\00:00:28.39 This broadcast is a previously recorded episode. 00:00:28.42\00:00:31.36 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.10 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.13\00:00:38.97 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:39.00\00:00:44.17 Now, here's your host from Amazing Facts International 00:00:44.21\00:00:48.08 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:48.11\00:00:50.08 Doug Batchelor: Hello, listening friends. 00:00:50.11\00:00:51.45 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:00:51.48\00:00:53.75 And we always like to start with an amazing fact. 00:00:53.78\00:00:57.52 The James Webb Space Telescope is by far the world's most 00:00:57.55\00:01:01.96 powerful telescope and the largest ever sent into space. 00:01:01.99\00:01:06.13 This highly sophisticated instrument took over 24 years to 00:01:06.16\00:01:09.83 complete and cost NASA around $10 billion to build. 00:01:09.86\00:01:14.50 Launched on Christmas day 2021 from French Guiana, the 00:01:14.54\00:01:18.14 telescope is a hundred times more powerful than the Hubble 00:01:18.17\00:01:21.71 Space Telescope. 00:01:21.74\00:01:23.38 If it was on earth, it could detect the heat of a bumblebee 00:01:23.41\00:01:27.42 from the moon. 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.05 Webb's infrared cameras are so sensitive they need to block all 00:01:29.08\00:01:32.89 light from the sun, earth, and moon. 00:01:32.92\00:01:35.72 The five-layer sunshield is like having sunblock of SPF 00:01:35.76\00:01:39.93 1 million. 00:01:39.96\00:01:41.63 Not to mention it's as big as a tennis court and they had to 00:01:41.66\00:01:44.50 engineer this so it could fold up into a little rocket and then 00:01:44.53\00:01:48.07 unfold 1 million miles from earth with no errors. 00:01:48.10\00:01:52.57 Since it began transmitting its first images in July 2021, the 00:01:52.61\00:01:57.01 scientific world has been stunned by the spectacular new, 00:01:57.05\00:02:00.72 ultra deep pictures of the cosmos. 00:02:00.75\00:02:03.82 One of the goals of the extraordinary telescope was to 00:02:03.85\00:02:06.89 see if they could discover something about the origin of 00:02:06.92\00:02:09.42 the universe. 00:02:09.46\00:02:11.09 Scientists were hoping the JWST would see the outer edge of the 00:02:11.13\00:02:15.80 expanding universe. 00:02:15.83\00:02:17.73 Instead what they found is an infinite ocean of galaxies 00:02:17.77\00:02:22.04 containing billions of stars that continue to stretch as far 00:02:22.07\00:02:26.14 as the telescope can see in every direction. 00:02:26.17\00:02:30.45 You know, Pastor Ross, we were just talking before the program. 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.35 I still wonder if I could be fired in a rocket ship a 00:02:33.38\00:02:37.29 thousand times the speed of light in any one direction, 00:02:37.32\00:02:40.79 would you ever reach the end of space, of, you know, galaxies 00:02:40.82\00:02:46.36 and stars and stuff? 00:02:46.39\00:02:48.80 And if you hit a wall, you'd have to say, "But what's on the 00:02:48.83\00:02:51.57 other side?" 00:02:51.60\00:02:53.10 And the idea of the immensity and infinity of space is just 00:02:53.13\00:02:59.34 mind-boggling, and yet God's aware of every detail. 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.01 Jëan Ross: And He made it all. 00:03:03.04\00:03:04.35 He made all the stars. 00:03:04.38\00:03:05.71 Matter of fact, the Bible tells us not only is He the creator of 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.78 all things but He knows the number of the stars. 00:03:07.82\00:03:11.25 Here you find in Psalms 147, verse 4 and 5, speaking of God, 00:03:11.29\00:03:17.03 "He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.20 by name. 00:03:20.23\00:03:21.73 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.33 is infinite." 00:03:25.37\00:03:26.70 So there it is. 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.04 God counts the stars and He has a name for them. 00:03:28.07\00:03:30.17 Doug: Yeah. 00:03:30.21\00:03:31.44 You know, I think probably if you go back even just a couple 00:03:31.47\00:03:34.11 of 100 years, when astronomers looked up into space, you know, 00:03:34.14\00:03:38.81 they saw a lot of twinkling white stars. 00:03:38.85\00:03:40.98 Some had a little bit of the red hue maybe. 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.85 They might have seen the rings of Saturn. 00:03:43.89\00:03:47.39 But now when we get these images coming back from both the Hubble 00:03:47.42\00:03:50.66 and the James Webb Telescope, these colors and shapes and 00:03:50.69\00:03:54.83 forms, and these nebula, and these gas clouds, supernovas, 00:03:54.86\00:03:58.83 and quasars. 00:03:58.87\00:04:00.27 And there's so much out there, and we don't see any of it 00:04:00.30\00:04:03.94 up close. 00:04:03.97\00:04:05.34 So now when we talk about God having a place in heaven, it 00:04:05.37\00:04:10.71 actually sounds more scientifically plausible. 00:04:10.75\00:04:13.65 We used to wonder in the Bible, how could God have a new 00:04:13.68\00:04:16.52 Jerusalem come down from heaven, a city come down from space? 00:04:16.55\00:04:20.09 Well, man has built an international space station. 00:04:20.12\00:04:23.06 If man can do that, why would people doubt that God has this 00:04:23.09\00:04:27.66 paradise that the Bible speaks of? 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.00 One more thought before--I know you're going to go to the 00:04:30.03\00:04:31.87 free offer. 00:04:31.90\00:04:33.23 I think it was C.S. Lewis that said, 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.27 and it's a great practical argument in philosophy, 00:04:35.30\00:04:39.91 that every desire that God gives humans, there is 00:04:39.94\00:04:43.81 some mechanism to fulfill that desire, whether it's food or 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.92 procreation or social interaction. 00:04:47.95\00:04:51.75 Or it seems whenever we have a desire, there must be some way 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.66 to satisfy that. 00:04:54.69\00:04:56.22 The Bible says God has placed eternity in our hearts. 00:04:56.26\00:04:59.96 There must be a way to satisfy that, or we wouldn't have it. 00:05:00.06\00:05:04.37 And we have an offer. 00:05:04.40\00:05:06.43 If people don't think there's a heaven, I think that you need to 00:05:06.47\00:05:09.60 think again. 00:05:09.64\00:05:10.94 Jëan: We have a book. 00:05:10.97\00:05:12.31 It's called "Heaven: Is It For Real?" 00:05:12.34\00:05:14.01 That is our free offer. 00:05:14.04\00:05:15.41 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:05:15.44\00:05:17.41 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.85 And you can ask for the book. 00:05:20.88\00:05:22.18 It's called "Heaven: Is It For Real?" 00:05:22.22\00:05:23.72 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone and just say, "I like 00:05:23.75\00:05:28.46 that book 'Heaven: Is It For Real?'" 00:05:28.49\00:05:30.93 And we'll be happy to send you a digital copy of the book. 00:05:30.96\00:05:34.76 Well, Pastor Doug, before we go to the phone lines, we always 00:05:34.83\00:05:36.93 like to start this program with prayer. 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.07 So let's do that now. 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.57 Dear Father, we are grateful once again that we have this 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.64 time to open up Your Word and study. 00:05:42.67\00:05:44.91 And as we look up into the heavens, we see Your glory, Your 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.81 power, but when we look into Your Word, we also see Your 00:05:47.84\00:05:50.75 power and glory and Your love manifest in the plan 00:05:50.78\00:05:53.88 of redemption. 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.22 So please be with us as we study together this evening, and we 00:05:55.25\00:05:57.89 thank You. 00:05:57.92\00:05:59.22 In Jesus's name, amen. 00:05:59.25\00:06:01.62 Well, friends, again, we are so delighted that you are part of 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.29 "Bible Answers Live." 00:06:04.33\00:06:05.63 And we do have a number of folks who are standing by with their 00:06:05.66\00:06:09.33 Bible questions. 00:06:09.36\00:06:10.60 And, oh, by the way, if you do have a Bible question, you can 00:06:10.63\00:06:13.17 just call our studio here, and the number for that 00:06:13.20\00:06:15.57 is 800-463-7297. 00:06:15.60\00:06:19.94 Again, that number, if you have a Bible question, 00:06:19.97\00:06:21.88 is 800-463-7297. 00:06:21.91\00:06:26.38 Our first caller this evening is Elizabeth listening in Arizona. 00:06:26.41\00:06:30.32 Elizabeth, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:06:30.35\00:06:32.59 Elizabeth: Hi. 00:06:32.62\00:06:33.96 Thank you, pastors, for taking my call. 00:06:33.99\00:06:35.96 Doug: Yeah. 00:06:35.99\00:06:37.33 Elizabeth: I tried to ask this question last week. 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.79 I'm asking about the same passage in Malachi. 00:06:39.83\00:06:44.27 Doug: That's okay. 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.63 If we didn't scratch where you're itching, we want to try 00:06:45.67\00:06:48.10 to answer the right part of the question. 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.47 Elizabeth: I appreciate you. 00:06:50.51\00:06:52.31 It's perplexing my brain. 00:06:52.34\00:06:54.84 Why is there the possibility that Elijah would fail? 00:06:54.88\00:06:58.85 Isn't the earth going to go through a great deal of 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.68 trouble anyway? 00:07:01.72\00:07:03.12 I mean, could this get worse? 00:07:03.15\00:07:04.62 How could Elijah possibly let the Lord down? 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.69 Doug: Let me see if I can do a better job. 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.32 And, first of all, for our friends that are listening, 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.63 Elizabeth's asking about this prophecy at the end of the Old 00:07:11.66\00:07:14.73 Testament, and it says, "Behold," verse--this is chapter 00:07:14.76\00:07:18.40 4 Malachi, verse 5 and 6. 00:07:18.43\00:07:21.14 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming 00:07:21.17\00:07:24.97 of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.58 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.35 the hearts of the children to the fathers, lest I come and 00:07:30.38\00:07:33.52 strike the earth with a curse." 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.78 Now, there's two senses in which Elijah comes. 00:07:35.82\00:07:38.89 One, Jesus said, and this is in Matthew 11, that John the 00:07:38.92\00:07:43.32 Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:07:43.36\00:07:47.13 He brought a message of revival. 00:07:47.20\00:07:49.20 Many were revived. 00:07:49.23\00:07:50.87 To some extent, John prepared the way of the Lord, and many 00:07:50.90\00:07:55.17 accepted Jesus, and there was a great Pentecost and a revival, 00:07:55.20\00:07:58.37 but the nation rejected him and a curse came on them. 00:07:58.41\00:08:02.71 They were destroyed in 70 A.D. 00:08:02.74\00:08:04.91 In the end of time, there's going to be another 00:08:04.95\00:08:07.02 Elijah message. 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.35 God is going to have a great message of returning to the 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.92 Lord, repentance, revival. 00:08:10.95\00:08:13.12 And some will respond, but not everyone. 00:08:13.15\00:08:16.32 And you've got the seven last plagues that will ultimately 00:08:16.36\00:08:19.23 fall upon those that reject that message of revival. 00:08:19.26\00:08:22.06 Jëan: And even during the time of Elijah, the historic Elijah, 00:08:22.10\00:08:25.23 when he prophesied to Ahab the king, Israel was not spared 00:08:25.27\00:08:29.10 of judgment. 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.44 Eventually the northern kingdom was conquered by the Assyrians 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.67 and dispersed. 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.01 And yet there were individuals who received the Elijah message. 00:08:34.04\00:08:37.48 The Bible speaks of 7,000 that didn't bow their knee to Baal. 00:08:37.51\00:08:40.52 And so a remnant was saved from that group. 00:08:40.55\00:08:43.92 Likewise in the time of John the Baptist and at the end of time. 00:08:43.95\00:08:47.02 God will have a remnant who'll respond to the Elijah message. 00:08:47.06\00:08:50.86 They'll be protected, and eventually they'll be taken to 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.33 heaven, the second coming. 00:08:53.36\00:08:55.40 Doug: Yeah, hopefully. 00:08:55.43\00:08:56.77 Does that make sense, Elizabeth? 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.23 Elizabeth: Yes, sir. 00:08:58.27\00:08:59.57 I appreciate you taking my call once again. 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.27 Doug: All right. 00:09:02.30\00:09:03.64 Hey, thanks so much, we appreciate your calling. 00:09:03.67\00:09:05.11 Jëan: Next caller that we have is Brittany in California. 00:09:05.14\00:09:07.28 Evening, Brittany. 00:09:07.31\00:09:09.01 Brittany: Hey, hey, hey. 00:09:09.04\00:09:10.41 Doug: Hi, thanks for calling. 00:09:10.45\00:09:11.85 And your question. 00:09:11.88\00:09:14.45 Brittany: Yeah, my question is, why do so many people go through 00:09:14.48\00:09:19.05 bad things in this world? 00:09:19.09\00:09:21.06 Doug: Why do so many people go through bad things? 00:09:21.09\00:09:22.89 You know, that is a big question. 00:09:22.92\00:09:24.26 A lot of people turn from God because they say, "If God is all 00:09:24.29\00:09:27.83 powerful and He's loving, then why does He allow so 00:09:27.86\00:09:30.40 much suffering? 00:09:30.43\00:09:31.73 Why does He allow bad things to happen to good people?" 00:09:31.77\00:09:34.44 And probably the oldest book in the Bible is the book of Job and 00:09:34.47\00:09:37.67 it deals with that question. 00:09:37.71\00:09:39.64 Here you've got a good man who is suffering terrible plagues. 00:09:39.67\00:09:44.38 And you look behind the veil in the story of Job, we see that 00:09:44.41\00:09:47.68 God is not doing it. 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.55 There is an evil power that has hijacked this planet. 00:09:49.58\00:09:54.09 The Lord has come to redeem the planet for those that will turn 00:09:54.12\00:09:57.89 to Him, but it doesn't mean it's without a struggle. 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.63 So there's a battle between good and evil. 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.96 Not everything that happens in the world is God's will. 00:10:03.00\00:10:06.03 That's why the Bible says we are to pray His will be done on 00:10:06.07\00:10:09.20 earth as it is in heaven, because this world--Jesus says 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.44 the devil is the prince of this world. 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.64 Our first parents, when they listened to the devil instead of 00:10:14.68\00:10:17.65 God, they sort of handed the keys and the deed of the planet. 00:10:17.68\00:10:22.18 They gave their dominion to the enemy. 00:10:22.22\00:10:24.72 Jesus came to redeem or buy back, to ransom this world. 00:10:24.75\00:10:29.42 So soon it'll be over. 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.16 Satan's been defeated, but he's going to go down fighting 00:10:31.19\00:10:35.60 according to Revelation 12. 00:10:35.63\00:10:36.97 Jëan: You know, we do have a book. 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.30 It's called "When the Brook Dried Up: Why Do 00:10:38.33\00:10:40.20 Christians Suffer?" 00:10:40.24\00:10:41.54 And we'll be happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:10:41.57\00:10:43.71 You know, the good news, Pastor Doug, is that the suffering is 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.74 not going to last forever. 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.31 The Bible is very clear that there is an end. 00:10:47.34\00:10:49.61 And Jesus comes and puts an end to sin and sorrow and suffering 00:10:49.64\00:10:53.35 and He makes all things new. 00:10:53.38\00:10:55.28 If you'd like to learn more about that, call and ask for 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.19 the book. 00:10:57.22\00:10:58.55 It's called "When the Brook Dried Up." 00:10:58.59\00:10:59.89 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:10:59.92\00:11:03.73 And you can call and ask. 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.06 You can dial #250 on your smartphone and you can ask for 00:11:05.09\00:11:08.46 it by name. 00:11:08.50\00:11:09.83 "When the Book--" Sorry. 00:11:09.86\00:11:11.17 "When the Brook Dried Up." 00:11:11.20\00:11:12.53 And it's kind of bringing the story from Elijah when the brook 00:11:12.57\00:11:16.04 dried up and he was facing trials and difficulties. 00:11:16.07\00:11:19.64 Next caller that we have is Glenn and Linda from Ohio. 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.81 Glenn, Linda, welcome to "Bible Answers Life." 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.55 Glenn: Good evening, pastors. 00:11:25.58\00:11:26.82 Thank you for taking my call, and welcome from Bethel, Ohio. 00:11:26.85\00:11:31.35 Doug: Thank you. 00:11:31.39\00:11:32.69 Glenn: I have a correction. 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.02 My Scripture this evening is Isaiah 60, not 66. 00:11:34.06\00:11:38.53 Doug: Okay. 00:11:38.56\00:11:39.89 Glenn: So get that in the book right there. 00:11:39.93\00:11:42.50 And where it begins is the 2nd verse of Isaiah 60 where it 00:11:42.53\00:11:49.84 talks about a great darkness over the land. 00:11:49.87\00:11:52.61 And its in conjunction with a massive move by the Gentile 00:11:52.64\00:11:56.85 population around the world bringing their wealth and coming 00:11:56.88\00:12:00.38 to Jerusalem under that darkness that existed at that time. 00:12:00.42\00:12:06.92 Question number one is I wondered is that historic or is 00:12:06.96\00:12:10.36 it prophetic? 00:12:10.39\00:12:11.79 And the second question is, what was it all about? 00:12:11.83\00:12:15.26 Doug: Good, great question. 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.60 Thanks, Glenn. 00:12:16.63\00:12:17.93 Let me read this for our friends that are listening. 00:12:17.97\00:12:19.60 We know people are often driving. 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.00 And so I'd like to just read the reference that Glenn is 00:12:22.04\00:12:23.91 talking about. 00:12:23.94\00:12:25.37 And it begins with verse 1. "Arise, shine; for your light 00:12:25.41\00:12:28.98 has come. 00:12:29.01\00:12:30.31 And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. 00:12:30.35\00:12:32.08 For behold, darkness will cover the land, and deep darkness the 00:12:32.11\00:12:35.78 people; but the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be 00:12:35.82\00:12:39.42 seen upon you. 00:12:39.45\00:12:40.76 And the Gentiles will come to your light, and kings to the 00:12:40.79\00:12:44.56 brightness of your rising." 00:12:44.59\00:12:46.53 So what is this light, this rising? 00:12:46.56\00:12:49.40 Well, you read in Malachi, it says the Son of righteousness 00:12:49.43\00:12:52.37 will arise with healing in His wings. 00:12:52.40\00:12:56.07 And Jesus said, "I Am the light of the world." 00:12:56.10\00:12:59.84 And because of Christ, the Gentile world was converted 00:12:59.87\00:13:04.75 to--or much of the Gentile world I should say, was converted to 00:13:04.78\00:13:08.82 the God of the Bible, the God of the Jews, Jehovah. 00:13:08.85\00:13:12.39 And so this is a prophecy. 00:13:12.42\00:13:14.49 Now, it had happened in the Old Testament during the time of 00:13:14.52\00:13:16.93 Solomon where the Gentiles, like the Queen of Sheba, they came to 00:13:16.96\00:13:20.43 the light, the wisdom of Solomon who was the son of David. 00:13:20.46\00:13:24.13 Well, Jesus is the son of David. 00:13:24.17\00:13:26.03 He's the king of kings. 00:13:26.07\00:13:27.70 And a lot of people around the world, Gentiles, are turning to 00:13:27.74\00:13:33.84 the God of the Bible. 00:13:33.88\00:13:36.14 Jëan: And in Revelation chapter 18, it's interesting you've got 00:13:36.18\00:13:38.91 this mighty angel coming down from heaven. 00:13:38.95\00:13:41.58 Says the earth was illuminated with his glory, and he cries 00:13:41.62\00:13:45.19 with a loud voice, saying, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen." 00:13:45.22\00:13:47.82 Of course, what we refer to here is this fourth angel. 00:13:47.86\00:13:50.26 Also is reflective of the three angels' messages in Revelation 00:13:50.29\00:13:54.83 14, in particular the second angel. 00:13:54.83\00:13:57.07 So here we see a great revival that is to take place just 00:13:57.10\00:14:00.54 before Jesus comes, where the earth is filled with the glory 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.94 or the light of the gospel, this proclamation of God's last 00:14:03.97\00:14:07.08 warning message, calling people to come out of religious 00:14:07.11\00:14:09.54 confusion and to make their stand on Bible truth. 00:14:09.58\00:14:13.11 You know, Pastor Doug, I'm looking for a book that goes 00:14:13.15\00:14:15.12 along with this. 00:14:15.15\00:14:16.45 And we do have one that speaks about this great plan of 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.72 redemption, the gospel, the good news. 00:14:19.75\00:14:21.62 It's called "Three Steps to Heaven." 00:14:21.66\00:14:23.69 And, friends, if you want to be ready when that time comes so 00:14:23.73\00:14:26.19 that you can be amongst those who are shining forth the glory, 00:14:26.23\00:14:30.17 you want to learn what the gospel is, we'll be happy to 00:14:30.20\00:14:32.60 send you the book. 00:14:32.63\00:14:33.97 It's called "Three Steps to Heaven" and it's 00:14:34.00\00:14:35.34 about salvation. 00:14:35.37\00:14:36.67 How do you obtain that gift? 00:14:36.71\00:14:38.27 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:14:38.31\00:14:41.48 You can ask for the book by name, "Three Steps to Heaven." 00:14:41.51\00:14:44.01 You can dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the book 00:14:44.05\00:14:48.12 that way as well. 00:14:48.15\00:14:49.65 Anna in Oregon, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:14:49.68\00:14:52.69 Anna: Evening, pastors. 00:14:52.72\00:14:54.06 Doug: Evening, thanks for calling. 00:14:54.09\00:14:55.72 Anna: Thank you. 00:14:55.76\00:14:57.29 I was reading through Genesis. 00:14:57.33\00:14:58.86 And in Genesis 12, Abram and Sarai, I think that's how you 00:14:58.89\00:15:03.47 pronounce it, they go to Egypt, and he tells his wife to say 00:15:03.50\00:15:09.07 that she's his sister. 00:15:09.10\00:15:11.11 And, of course, they lied. 00:15:11.14\00:15:13.04 And then Pharaoh gets punished for it and Abram gets blessed 00:15:13.07\00:15:19.65 for it. 00:15:19.68\00:15:20.98 Doug: Yeah, he goes out of Egypt with great wealth. 00:15:21.02\00:15:22.35 But the Pharaoh did sort of rebuke him also, says, "You 00:15:22.38\00:15:25.85 know, I could have lightly have lain with your wife. 00:15:25.89\00:15:28.62 You--why did you--why'd you lie to me?" 00:15:28.66\00:15:31.56 Anna: Yeah, yeah. 00:15:31.59\00:15:32.99 So, I mean, I guess my question is, is it okay to lie in 00:15:33.03\00:15:38.30 certain situation? 00:15:38.33\00:15:39.93 Doug: Yeah. 00:15:39.97\00:15:41.27 No, it's not a dumb question 'cause there are a lot of people 00:15:41.30\00:15:43.00 that have thought, "Well, you know, what do you do with the 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.54 story in the Bible where Joshua pretended that he was 00:15:45.57\00:15:50.81 being defeated? 00:15:50.85\00:15:52.15 It's, you know, deception in battle so he could draw the 00:15:52.18\00:15:53.98 enemy out of the city." 00:15:54.02\00:15:55.68 So deception is, you know, dishonesty in some form. 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.89 David pretended he was crazy before Abimelech so that he 00:15:58.92\00:16:04.49 wouldn't be killed. 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.36 You've got Rahab where she lied and said, "Oh, yeah, the spies, 00:16:07.40\00:16:11.03 they left. 00:16:11.07\00:16:12.37 If you hurry after them, you'll catch them." 00:16:12.40\00:16:13.74 So you've got examples in the Bible where people lied, but 00:16:13.77\00:16:15.80 never does it mean God endorses it. 00:16:15.84\00:16:17.61 The Bible is a faithful history book. 00:16:17.64\00:16:20.04 Now, there are times of ignorance that God winks at. 00:16:20.08\00:16:22.68 It doesn't mean it's okay. 00:16:22.71\00:16:24.05 Means in times of war. 00:16:24.08\00:16:26.61 Abraham shouldn't have been deceptive. 00:16:26.65\00:16:28.85 Technically, he was thinking, "Well, Sarah is actually my 00:16:28.88\00:16:31.65 half sister." 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.05 And he was really scared. 00:16:33.09\00:16:34.42 And not only did he do it, it set a bad example for Isaac. 00:16:34.46\00:16:36.83 Isaac did it with Rebecca later with the Philistines. 00:16:36.86\00:16:39.59 Said, "Oh, just say you're my sister." 00:16:39.63\00:16:41.30 She wasn't his sister, she was his first cousin. 00:16:41.33\00:16:43.90 But anyway, there's never a good reason to lie. 00:16:43.93\00:16:48.64 And, you know, I think about a story in the book 00:16:48.67\00:16:51.11 "The Hiding Place." 00:16:51.14\00:16:53.07 That's not in the Bible, but it's a great example, where 00:16:53.11\00:16:57.21 these German soldiers were rampaging up the street, taking 00:16:57.25\00:17:00.45 young men out of the Dutch houses to--and forcing them 00:17:00.48\00:17:04.02 into--pressing them into service. 00:17:04.05\00:17:05.35 And this young lady was a Christian, devout Christian, and 00:17:05.39\00:17:09.02 her brothers were hiding under the table. 00:17:09.06\00:17:11.69 And they came in and they kept pressing, "Are there any young 00:17:11.73\00:17:14.86 men here?" 00:17:14.93\00:17:16.23 And she didn't want to lie and she just was about to have 00:17:16.26\00:17:18.57 a meltdown. 00:17:18.60\00:17:19.90 Finally, she said, "They're under the table." 00:17:19.93\00:17:22.50 And because she'd never lied. 00:17:22.54\00:17:24.61 She just been taught, "Don't ever lie." 00:17:24.64\00:17:26.91 Well, the Germans lifted up the tablecloth, they didn't think to 00:17:26.94\00:17:29.88 look under the table and they thought that she was mocking and 00:17:29.91\00:17:34.35 they marched out. 00:17:34.38\00:17:35.85 Well, she told the truth, and God still spared them. 00:17:35.88\00:17:38.15 So I think you better off saying nothing. 00:17:38.19\00:17:42.29 Sometimes you shouldn't say anything. 00:17:42.32\00:17:44.69 Jesus said to the disciples, "There's many things I have to 00:17:44.73\00:17:47.60 say to you now, but you can't bear it." 00:17:47.66\00:17:49.03 So sometimes you might say nothing, but you should 00:17:49.06\00:17:50.77 never lie. 00:17:50.80\00:17:52.13 Jëan: You know, another story that comes to mind, Pastor Doug, 00:17:52.17\00:17:54.24 of modern times is Andrew. 00:17:54.27\00:17:57.51 He's referred to as Brother Andrew, who was committed to 00:17:57.54\00:18:00.61 taking Bibles into the Soviet Union, and he said he wasn't 00:18:00.64\00:18:03.85 going to lie. 00:18:03.88\00:18:05.21 And he had these amazing stories of how he was stopped, and 00:18:05.25\00:18:07.75 people would say, "What you carrying?" 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.08 And he says, "Bibles." 00:18:09.12\00:18:10.42 And as if they didn't hear him or they would look in the trunk 00:18:10.45\00:18:12.52 of the car and they wouldn't see the Bibles there. 00:18:12.55\00:18:14.69 So God just worked in miraculous ways because he was committed to 00:18:14.72\00:18:18.79 being honest and trusting in the Lord. 00:18:18.83\00:18:20.96 Doug: Exactly, exactly, great stories. 00:18:21.00\00:18:22.83 Jëan: All right, thank you, Anna. 00:18:22.86\00:18:24.33 We've got Noah listening in Kansas. 00:18:24.37\00:18:26.77 Noah, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:18:26.80\00:18:29.94 Noah: Right. 00:18:29.97\00:18:31.27 My Bible question is, why did God make us? 00:18:31.31\00:18:35.11 Doug: Okay, good question, Noah. 00:18:35.14\00:18:37.55 Why did God make us? 00:18:37.58\00:18:39.61 Well, you sound like a young person. 00:18:39.65\00:18:43.12 Why does a mom and a dad have children? 00:18:43.15\00:18:46.19 Because they want to love them and they want the children to 00:18:46.22\00:18:48.89 love them back. 00:18:48.92\00:18:50.26 God is love and He--you know, you can't love anybody if you 00:18:50.29\00:18:54.03 don't have anybody, and love is something that must be expressed 00:18:54.10\00:18:58.23 or shown. 00:18:58.27\00:18:59.70 And so God wanted to show His love and make children. 00:18:59.73\00:19:04.07 So He made us to show His love and so we could experience life 00:19:04.11\00:19:07.04 and joy. 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.41 Good question. 00:19:08.44\00:19:09.74 Thanks so much. 00:19:09.78\00:19:11.11 Jëan: All right, thank you, Noah. 00:19:11.15\00:19:12.45 We've got Larry in Oregon. 00:19:12.48\00:19:13.78 Larry, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:19:13.82\00:19:15.78 Larry: Good evening, gentlemen. 00:19:15.82\00:19:17.42 Doug: Good evening. 00:19:17.45\00:19:19.12 Larry: I have recently heard some interpretations 00:19:19.15\00:19:23.76 of Isaiah 4:1 that just don't-- 00:19:23.79\00:19:30.00 Doug: Well, let me try and answer. 00:19:30.03\00:19:31.53 I don't know if you're offline, but, Larry, hopefully you can 00:19:31.57\00:19:33.44 hear us. 00:19:33.47\00:19:34.77 Isaiah 4:1, let me read it for our friends. 00:19:34.80\00:19:36.84 "And in that day seven women will take hold of one man, 00:19:36.87\00:19:39.84 saying, 'We will eat our own food, wear our own apparel; only 00:19:39.87\00:19:44.45 let us be called by your name, to take away our reproach.'" 00:19:44.48\00:19:47.62 This is an example, there's several in Isaiah, of what you 00:19:47.65\00:19:50.39 might call a dual prophecy. 00:19:50.42\00:19:52.59 Often after a terrible battle--you know, typically the 00:19:52.62\00:19:55.89 men went to war, and if the armies were decimated, there was 00:19:55.92\00:20:00.53 a shortage of husbands. 00:20:00.56\00:20:02.63 Now, I understand in China because of the one child policy 00:20:02.66\00:20:05.43 and they were doing selective abortions, they had a shortage 00:20:05.47\00:20:08.40 of wives. 00:20:08.44\00:20:09.77 They still do. 00:20:09.80\00:20:11.11 They got a terrible shortage of wives. 00:20:11.14\00:20:12.47 Well, after wars, there was a terrible shortage of husbands. 00:20:12.51\00:20:15.51 And back then they had no social security. 00:20:15.54\00:20:18.11 If you had no children to take care of you in your old age, if 00:20:18.15\00:20:21.15 you--you had no place in the community if you had no 00:20:21.18\00:20:23.12 children, and so the women were so desperate to have families. 00:20:23.15\00:20:26.92 They--but they knew that the men were thinking, "I can't support 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.19 all these wives." 00:20:29.22\00:20:30.56 Says, "Don't worry about it." 00:20:30.59\00:20:31.89 Seven women would take hold of one man and say, "We'll eat our 00:20:31.93\00:20:34.93 own food. 00:20:34.96\00:20:36.26 We'll get our own food, we'll get our own clothes, but let us 00:20:36.30\00:20:39.00 have your name to take away our reproach of being childless." 00:20:39.03\00:20:43.07 So it was telling about a terrible judgment that would 00:20:43.10\00:20:45.61 come, that did come with the Babylonian captivity, but it's 00:20:45.64\00:20:50.35 also talking about the spiritual significance. 00:20:50.38\00:20:53.01 A woman in prophecy is a church. 00:20:53.05\00:20:56.02 And in the last days you have many churches that claim to be 00:20:56.05\00:20:59.72 Christian and they have their own bread, their own 00:20:59.75\00:21:03.29 interpretation of the Bible, they've got their own apparel, a 00:21:03.32\00:21:06.63 robe of righteousness, their own idea of what's righteousness, 00:21:06.66\00:21:09.83 but they want to call themselves Christian because it's the only 00:21:09.86\00:21:12.50 name whereby men must be saved. 00:21:12.53\00:21:15.30 So that would be the spiritual application. 00:21:15.34\00:21:16.87 So hopefully you heard that, Larry. 00:21:16.91\00:21:18.14 And I don't know if that fits in with what you were going to ask, 00:21:18.17\00:21:20.71 but we didn't want to leave you hanging. 00:21:20.74\00:21:22.38 Thanks. 00:21:22.41\00:21:23.71 Jëan: All right. 00:21:23.75\00:21:25.08 Next caller that we have is David in California. 00:21:25.11\00:21:26.75 Hi, David. 00:21:26.78\00:21:28.08 Welcome to the program. 00:21:28.12\00:21:29.45 David: Hello. 00:21:29.48\00:21:30.79 Is it okay for us to listen to jazz music? 00:21:30.82\00:21:32.92 Doug: Is it okay--yeah, so you're wondering, is it okay for 00:21:32.95\00:21:35.82 a Christian to listen to jazz music? 00:21:35.86\00:21:39.29 You know, jazz is a genre that is fairly broad. 00:21:39.33\00:21:44.57 I've got a neighbor that is an extremely talented pianist and 00:21:44.60\00:21:49.87 he plays Christian jazz. 00:21:49.90\00:21:53.64 Now, I--you know, right or wrong, I'm just telling you it's 00:21:53.68\00:21:55.78 what he does. 00:21:55.81\00:21:57.11 And just amazing what he does with a keyboard, but he'll take, 00:21:57.15\00:21:59.58 you know, "Great is Your Faithfulness" and he does a 00:21:59.61\00:22:02.25 whole different arrangement of it. 00:22:02.28\00:22:04.02 I would stop short of saying that, you know, this is all 00:22:04.05\00:22:06.32 a sin. 00:22:06.35\00:22:08.26 You know, a lot of jazz music that would be associated with, 00:22:08.29\00:22:10.99 like, a jazz bar and the dancing, I don't think you'd see 00:22:11.03\00:22:15.03 Jesus listening to and going there. 00:22:15.06\00:22:18.30 So when you're in doubt, first of all, if you get the Holy 00:22:18.33\00:22:20.97 Spirit guiding you, you just have an inner voice that'll tell 00:22:21.00\00:22:23.47 you, "This is not right. 00:22:23.51\00:22:25.14 I can't picture My Lord listening to this music or being 00:22:25.17\00:22:28.44 in the environment this music creates." 00:22:28.48\00:22:31.51 And so the Spirit will guide you. 00:22:31.55\00:22:33.62 Sometimes that change in tastes of music--with me it happened 00:22:33.65\00:22:37.85 gradually after I became a Christian. 00:22:37.89\00:22:39.95 Things I once loved, I now hate, and things I once hated, I 00:22:39.99\00:22:42.22 now love. 00:22:42.26\00:22:43.66 So yeah. 00:22:43.69\00:22:45.23 You know, I have a book, and I think we could probably give 00:22:45.26\00:22:47.86 it away. 00:22:47.86\00:22:49.20 It's a small book, bigger than our normal sharing sermons, and 00:22:49.23\00:22:52.83 it's called "The Christian and Music." 00:22:52.87\00:22:54.64 And if you'd like, David, we'll send that to you. 00:22:54.67\00:22:56.77 It's got the principles of Christian music. 00:22:56.81\00:22:58.47 And I think you'll be in--you'll be blessed by that. 00:22:58.51\00:23:01.11 Jëan: The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:23:01.14\00:23:04.51 You can ask for this book. 00:23:04.55\00:23:05.85 As Pastor Doug mentioned, it's called "The Christian 00:23:05.88\00:23:08.18 and Music." 00:23:08.22\00:23:09.52 We don't always offer that, so take advantage of it. 00:23:09.55\00:23:11.82 Call and ask. 00:23:11.85\00:23:13.19 You can dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the book 00:23:13.22\00:23:16.56 "The Christian and Music." 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.39 We've got Scott in California. 00:23:18.43\00:23:20.66 Scott, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:23:20.70\00:23:22.36 You're on the air. 00:23:22.40\00:23:24.30 Scott: Hey, how are you guys? 00:23:24.33\00:23:26.10 Doug: Doing good. 00:23:26.13\00:23:27.47 Thank you for calling us. 00:23:27.50\00:23:28.87 Scott: So I have kind of a convoluted question. 00:23:28.90\00:23:31.27 But it's more on the lines of you know in the Bible where 00:23:31.31\00:23:37.21 angels guided people's hands to write the Bible? 00:23:37.25\00:23:44.85 How do you know if you're really being--like, I wrote this 00:23:44.89\00:23:48.59 question, and to be honest with you it says, is John in the four 00:23:48.62\00:23:53.93 gospels the same as the John that wrote the 3 John chapter 1, 00:23:53.96\00:24:00.37 verse 2, and how is these Johns associated with the John 00:24:00.40\00:24:07.18 the revelator? 00:24:07.21\00:24:08.54 Are any of these Johns related? 00:24:08.58\00:24:11.18 What about John the Baptist and Isaiah? 00:24:11.21\00:24:14.02 John's head was cut off, and Isaiah was cut in half. 00:24:14.05\00:24:18.89 How do you know if the Holy Spirit is leading you? 00:24:18.92\00:24:21.69 Doug: All right. 00:24:21.72\00:24:23.06 Well, let's take it one que--you got a lot of good questions 00:24:23.09\00:24:24.89 there, but, first of all, you have the name John is a common 00:24:24.93\00:24:29.00 name in the Bible. 00:24:29.03\00:24:30.33 I don't know, there must be six or eight of them that you can 00:24:30.37\00:24:33.13 think of. 00:24:33.17\00:24:34.50 You got John Mark, John the Baptist, John the apostle. 00:24:34.54\00:24:39.01 The John who is the apostle is also the author of 1, 2, and 00:24:39.04\00:24:45.15 3 John. 00:24:45.18\00:24:46.51 They're short letters that you'll find at the end of the 00:24:46.55\00:24:48.88 New Testament. 00:24:48.92\00:24:50.22 He's also the one who had the revelation of St. John. 00:24:50.25\00:24:54.76 And all the early church historians agree with the 00:24:54.79\00:24:58.53 authorship of the gospel of John, 1, 2, 3 John, and 00:24:58.56\00:25:03.40 Revelation written by this apostle. 00:25:03.43\00:25:05.23 He was the youngest of the 12 apostles. 00:25:05.27\00:25:08.40 So you do a little research and you can find out that it's 00:25:08.44\00:25:11.01 always been understood and accepted that he's the author. 00:25:11.04\00:25:14.18 People don't argue about who wrote "Pilgrim's Progress." 00:25:14.21\00:25:16.88 We all know it was written by John Bunyan. 00:25:16.91\00:25:19.18 Another John. 00:25:19.21\00:25:21.25 But John the Baptist, he was different. 00:25:21.28\00:25:24.19 He was probably a cousin of Jesus and he was the one who was 00:25:24.22\00:25:30.16 filled with the Spirit from his mother's womb that announced the 00:25:30.19\00:25:33.26 coming of Jesus. 00:25:33.29\00:25:34.73 Then you get young John Mark in the Bible, and he was probably a 00:25:34.73\00:25:40.84 relative of the apostles somehow because he was there in the 00:25:40.87\00:25:44.04 Garden of Gethsemane when they were--arrested Jesus. 00:25:44.07\00:25:47.38 So do a little research and you'll see. 00:25:47.41\00:25:50.75 You know, look at some Bible dictionaries or Bible 00:25:50.78\00:25:52.48 commentaries, Scott, and it'll help you to designate who these 00:25:52.51\00:25:56.32 people are. 00:25:56.35\00:25:57.65 I know one thing. 00:25:57.69\00:25:59.42 John, the gospel of John, the letters of John, Revelation, the 00:25:59.45\00:26:03.39 last book in the Bible, they are all inspired, and holy men spoke 00:26:03.43\00:26:08.70 as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 00:26:08.73\00:26:10.97 If there is any trustworthy document anywhere in the world, 00:26:11.00\00:26:15.00 the most trustworthy document is the Word of God, the Bible. 00:26:15.04\00:26:18.41 It has stood the test of time. 00:26:18.44\00:26:20.68 Someone once said the Bible is an anvil that has worn out 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.55 many hammers. 00:26:23.58\00:26:25.05 So you can trust it. 00:26:25.08\00:26:26.41 We're going to talk more about that blessed book in just a 00:26:26.45\00:26:28.22 few minutes. 00:26:28.25\00:26:29.58 You can hear we're getting our halftime music break. 00:26:29.62\00:26:31.42 Have some important announcements for you. 00:26:31.45\00:26:33.36 But don't go away. 00:26:33.39\00:26:34.69 Best questions are yet to come. 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.09 ¤¤¤ 00:26:36.19\00:26:39.46 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:26:39.49\00:26:40.83 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:26:40.86\00:26:42.90 ¤¤¤ 00:26:43.97\00:26:49.67 José: So I grew up in a somewhat Christian family. 00:26:49.70\00:26:52.71 Not really devout or anything like that. 00:26:52.74\00:26:55.14 No, we weren't going to church all the time. 00:26:55.18\00:26:57.08 There was a lot of drugs in the household. 00:26:57.11\00:26:59.35 Every weekend, you know, was partying and drinking, and 00:26:59.38\00:27:02.65 sometimes in the midnight police would come. 00:27:02.68\00:27:05.52 I would say it was a dysfunctional home. 00:27:05.55\00:27:07.62 And my grandmother was the one who really raised me, taught me 00:27:07.66\00:27:10.83 about God and about Jesus and she was always there for me. 00:27:10.86\00:27:14.63 Going to school, you know, 2nd, 3rd grade, 1st grade, those 00:27:14.66\00:27:18.20 years I was pretty rebellious. 00:27:18.23\00:27:20.07 Around, like, 12 years old I started to get more of a 00:27:20.10\00:27:22.74 friend group. 00:27:22.77\00:27:24.01 We started skateboarding, and that was, like, the new thing. 00:27:24.04\00:27:26.41 I smoked weed for the first time and drank for the first time, 00:27:26.44\00:27:29.24 and music became my obsession. 00:27:29.28\00:27:32.18 You know, at 10 years old is when I started and I was 00:27:32.21\00:27:34.55 obsessed with getting into Hollywood, being famous. 00:27:34.58\00:27:37.12 You know, I went into college and I was studying music 00:27:37.15\00:27:39.55 business and I end up dropping out, kind of lost in the club 00:27:39.59\00:27:43.96 lifestyle and the party lifestyle, you know, just trying 00:27:43.99\00:27:47.20 to get a foothold on a music career. 00:27:47.23\00:27:50.93 I started to feel bad drinking and I started to feel bad 00:27:50.97\00:27:54.34 smoking and I wasn't finding any real fulfillment. 00:27:54.37\00:27:58.67 And so I was trying to find something that was better than 00:27:58.71\00:28:03.45 what I had. 00:28:03.48\00:28:04.91 And so at 21 years old I had a lot of interactions with people 00:28:04.95\00:28:09.18 who were involved in the occult and I got introduced into 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.42 eastern meditation and getting into meditative stances and 00:28:12.45\00:28:16.89 going into trances. 00:28:16.93\00:28:18.26 You know, I would wake up in the middle of the night 00:28:18.29\00:28:19.86 hearing knocks on my windows, hearing chants. 00:28:19.89\00:28:22.66 I would wake up in the middle of the night, like, if my house was 00:28:22.70\00:28:25.17 being surrounded. 00:28:25.20\00:28:26.53 So I walked out of my household and just left everything behind. 00:28:26.57\00:28:30.24 I just kept on walking for at least 3 days. 00:28:30.27\00:28:33.58 And then I end up falling asleep out in the wilderness and end up 00:28:33.61\00:28:37.45 getting picked up by police officers, and they ended up 00:28:37.48\00:28:40.65 taking me to a hospital and force-feeding me drugs. 00:28:40.68\00:28:43.05 Something told me that if I continue this way that I was 00:28:43.08\00:28:46.02 going to lose my life, and I believe there was a voice 00:28:46.05\00:28:48.76 of Christ. 00:28:48.79\00:28:50.13 I kneeled down and asked God to deliver me from the side effects 00:28:50.16\00:28:53.70 of the drugs 'cause the side effects were really, really bad. 00:28:53.73\00:28:56.36 And so I went to the church looking for help. 00:28:56.40\00:28:58.57 They had introduced me into Amazing Facts. 00:28:58.60\00:29:01.10 So I watched "Mountain Moving Faith" from Doug Batchelor. 00:29:01.14\00:29:04.44 And I remember hearing Doug say, "Have you ever seen a mountain 00:29:04.47\00:29:07.68 move in one second? 00:29:07.71\00:29:09.68 Sometimes it may take a moment, but once it moves, then it'll be 00:29:09.71\00:29:13.05 like it was an instant." 00:29:13.08\00:29:14.42 And so I end up falling to my knees. 00:29:14.45\00:29:16.55 Every time I get the side effects of the drugs, I would 00:29:16.58\00:29:19.22 pray and I would find peace and comfort. 00:29:19.25\00:29:22.16 And where I would spend a lot of my time would be in the Bible, 00:29:22.19\00:29:25.23 and I started to change. 00:29:25.26\00:29:26.90 One week passed by and the side effects weren't so bad. 00:29:26.93\00:29:29.13 Two weeks passed by, I was almost back to normal. 00:29:29.16\00:29:32.07 Every Sabbath I would put on, you know, a sermon, I listen to 00:29:32.10\00:29:35.17 "Bible Answers Live." 00:29:35.20\00:29:37.24 Also "Storacles of Prophecy" was another thing that was helping 00:29:37.27\00:29:39.84 me through. 00:29:39.87\00:29:41.21 When I was hearing the words of God, you know, when I was 00:29:41.24\00:29:43.41 hearing the words of truth, when I was hearing the Bible, I had 00:29:43.45\00:29:47.15 peace, you know. 00:29:47.18\00:29:48.48 And even despite whatever, you know, trials might come my way, 00:29:48.52\00:29:51.45 I still have joy. 00:29:51.49\00:29:53.76 My name is José. 00:29:53.79\00:29:55.82 Thank you for changing my life. 00:29:55.86\00:29:57.39 ¤¤¤ 00:29:57.96\00:30:05.70 ¤¤¤ 00:30:06.97\00:30:10.37 announcer: You're our best to find Bible answers, but it's all about 00:31:14.64\00:31:17.31 the book. 00:31:17.34\00:31:18.67 And my name is Doug Batchelor. 00:31:18.71\00:31:20.31 Jëan: My name is Jëan Ross. 00:31:20.34\00:31:21.68 And we've got Steve, that he's listening in Oregon. 00:31:21.71\00:31:24.55 So, Steve, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:31:24.58\00:31:27.22 You're on the air. 00:31:27.25\00:31:28.58 Steve: Yes. 00:31:28.62\00:31:29.92 For decades I've struggled with the subject of what is the 00:31:29.95\00:31:34.59 abomination of desolation. 00:31:34.62\00:31:37.59 Multiple descriptions of the abomination of desolation is, 00:31:37.63\00:31:43.70 like, at different times and locations throughout history. 00:31:43.73\00:31:48.14 For instance, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the slaughter of a 00:31:48.17\00:31:52.94 pig by pagans in the sanctuary. 00:31:52.97\00:31:56.88 I have never heard an explanation that applies to the 00:31:56.91\00:32:01.12 end times, that being today. 00:32:01.15\00:32:03.75 Could not destruct--construction of a mosque at the location of 00:32:03.79\00:32:10.26 the original Temple Mount in Jerusalem and the daily prayers 00:32:10.29\00:32:16.87 to Allah from that Temple Mount, especially considering the 00:32:16.90\00:32:22.24 prayers of Christians is only allowed from the Wailing Wall. 00:32:22.27\00:32:29.38 Doug: Yeah, well, if you ask Orthodox Jews, I'm sure they 00:32:29.41\00:32:32.68 will look upon having a Muslim mosque at the site of the 00:32:32.71\00:32:37.79 ancient temple as an abomination. 00:32:37.82\00:32:40.79 A desolation means something that is also destroyed, so it's 00:32:40.82\00:32:43.66 a combination of things. 00:32:43.69\00:32:47.46 You're not too far off because in Matthew 24--now, John might 00:32:47.50\00:32:51.90 be looking at the verses in Daniel. 00:32:51.93\00:32:53.27 I don't know. 00:32:53.30\00:32:54.74 We--several different places we can go here. 00:32:54.77\00:32:57.21 In Matthew 24 when describing the end of the world, He said 00:32:57.24\00:33:01.24 there would not be left one stone upon another at the temple 00:33:01.28\00:33:03.81 that would not be thrown down. 00:33:03.85\00:33:05.88 And He said when you see the abomination of dan--of 00:33:05.91\00:33:09.68 desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy 00:33:09.72\00:33:12.52 place, let those that be in Judea flee into the mountains. 00:33:12.55\00:33:15.96 Now, the key to understanding that is you go to Luke. 00:33:15.99\00:33:18.66 And when Luke mentions that--is that chapter 17 or 21? 00:33:18.69\00:33:22.70 Jëan: 21, 21:20. 00:33:22.73\00:33:24.37 Doug: Verse 20 says when you see the abomination of 00:33:24.40\00:33:26.94 desolation--when you see Jerusalem 00:33:26.97\00:33:28.97 encompassed with arms-- 00:33:29.00\00:33:30.14 Jëan: Surrounded with armies. 00:33:30.17\00:33:31.64 Doug: Let those that be in Judea flee in the mountains. 00:33:31.67\00:33:33.11 So we know right there that the Roman army surrounding and 00:33:33.14\00:33:37.51 preparing to desolate the holy place was at least one 00:33:37.55\00:33:42.38 fulfillment of that. 00:33:42.42\00:33:44.52 Now, there's going to be a last day of fulfillment when God's 00:33:44.55\00:33:48.46 city, His spiritual city, His people are going to be 00:33:48.49\00:33:51.56 surrounded with laws. 00:33:51.59\00:33:54.36 And a spiritual Rome is going to be connected with that that's 00:33:54.40\00:33:58.90 going to hedge people in with laws, and they're going to have 00:33:58.93\00:34:00.94 to flee again. 00:34:00.97\00:34:02.47 You know, Jesus said, "Pray our flight is not in the winter or 00:34:02.50\00:34:04.97 on the Sabbath day." 00:34:05.01\00:34:06.44 I think we actually have a book called "The Abomination of 00:34:06.47\00:34:09.14 Desolation" by Gary Gibbs that we could send. 00:34:09.18\00:34:11.48 But you had some other thoughts. 00:34:11.51\00:34:13.01 Jëan: Yeah, just to add to that. 00:34:13.05\00:34:14.35 So there's--as you mentioned, Pastor Doug, you've got the 00:34:14.38\00:34:15.85 abomination of desolation in one sense, if you look at Matthew 24 00:34:15.88\00:34:19.55 and Luke 21. 00:34:19.59\00:34:20.92 It's clearly referring to pagan Rome and the destruction of 00:34:20.96\00:34:24.03 Jerusalem in 70 A.D. 00:34:24.06\00:34:25.73 But when you go to the book of Daniel, not only is it referring 00:34:25.76\00:34:28.46 to pagan Rome but you also have papal Rome, which did persecute 00:34:28.50\00:34:32.77 God's people during the 12 around 60 years of papal 00:34:32.80\00:34:35.30 supremacy, and then there is sort of a revival of this. 00:34:35.34\00:34:38.87 There is a persecution that takes place just near the end, 00:34:38.91\00:34:42.18 just before Jesus comes. 00:34:42.21\00:34:43.98 And once again, God's people are going to have to find safety 00:34:44.01\00:34:47.82 outside of the big cities. 00:34:47.85\00:34:49.68 I kind of like what Jesus said. 00:34:49.72\00:34:51.42 "You need to flee to the mountains." 00:34:51.45\00:34:52.69 There'll be a similar type of experience just near the end. 00:34:52.72\00:34:56.62 So dual application for that abomination of desolation. 00:34:56.66\00:35:00.46 Doug: Yeah. 00:35:00.50\00:35:01.80 And we'll be happy, Steve, to send you that book for free. 00:35:01.83\00:35:04.07 Anyone, if you want to understand this very important 00:35:04.10\00:35:06.13 subject, what is the abomination of desolation? 00:35:06.17\00:35:09.50 Jesus foretold it's not only in the past. 00:35:09.54\00:35:11.84 You need to understand it 'cause there's another one in 00:35:11.87\00:35:13.81 the future. 00:35:13.84\00:35:15.18 It's free. 00:35:15.21\00:35:16.51 You owe it to yourself to call and get this free book. 00:35:16.54\00:35:18.11 Jëan: The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:35:18.15\00:35:21.35 That is the resource phone line. 00:35:21.38\00:35:22.68 You'll see it on your screen. 00:35:22.72\00:35:24.09 As for the book, it's called "The Abomination of Desolation." 00:35:24.12\00:35:27.32 And you can dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the book, 00:35:27.36\00:35:31.69 and we'll be able to send you a digital copy and also send you a 00:35:31.73\00:35:34.36 hard copy in the mail. 00:35:34.36\00:35:36.26 Thank you, Steve. 00:35:36.30\00:35:37.60 We've got Josh in Iowa. 00:35:37.63\00:35:38.97 Josh, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:35:39.00\00:35:41.54 Josh: Hi. 00:35:41.57\00:35:42.87 Can you guys hear me clear? 00:35:42.90\00:35:44.21 Doug: Loud and clear. 00:35:44.24\00:35:45.57 Thanks, Josh. 00:35:45.61\00:35:46.91 Josh: Thanks, Doug. 00:35:46.94\00:35:48.28 My question is about why God allows Satan to tempt us 00:35:48.31\00:35:52.25 into sin? 00:35:52.28\00:35:53.62 And just to let me set it up for you, reason I'm asking is 'cause 00:35:53.65\00:35:57.72 if God destroyed Satan, right, but left us here, we would still 00:35:57.75\00:36:00.79 have our free will, but we could still choose to sin or not 00:36:00.82\00:36:04.49 to sin. 00:36:04.53\00:36:05.86 But Him allowing, you know, Satan and the demons and 00:36:05.89\00:36:08.36 everything to tempt us into sin all the time, it kind of feels 00:36:08.40\00:36:11.03 like--it's kind of like telling an alcoholic that he's not 00:36:11.07\00:36:15.34 allowed to drink anymore, but then forcing him to live across 00:36:15.37\00:36:18.14 the street from a liquor store. 00:36:18.17\00:36:19.51 You see what I'm saying? 00:36:19.54\00:36:20.94 Doug: Mm-hmm. 00:36:20.98\00:36:22.28 Josh: So I'm just not sure, like, what God gets out of 00:36:22.31\00:36:25.71 allowing Satan to tempt us when we could still have our free 00:36:25.75\00:36:28.88 will with our human existence. 00:36:28.92\00:36:31.39 Doug: Yeah, well, God is not allowing Satan to tempt us to 00:36:31.42\00:36:34.49 prove we have a free will. 00:36:34.52\00:36:36.66 There's--Satan has accused God not just before the earth but 00:36:36.69\00:36:40.96 before the universe. 00:36:40.96\00:36:42.26 There was a rebellion, a war in heaven between Satan and his 00:36:42.30\00:36:45.07 angels and God and His angels. 00:36:45.10\00:36:48.44 And two-thirds of the angels followed Lucifer. 00:36:48.47\00:36:51.24 Now, Lucifer was the highest, most powerful of God's 00:36:51.27\00:36:54.01 creations, and he was saying that God's government is not 00:36:54.04\00:36:56.85 just and that if he was in charge, everyone would have more 00:36:56.88\00:37:00.48 freedom and happiness. 00:37:00.52\00:37:01.85 And he went through the universe, and eventually at our 00:37:01.88\00:37:04.49 world he tempted Adam and Eve to not trust the Word of God but to 00:37:04.52\00:37:08.79 trust his word, and he basically hijacked the planet, and as we 00:37:08.82\00:37:12.46 mentioned earlier. 00:37:12.49\00:37:13.93 And this controversy between good and evil has been--this war 00:37:13.96\00:37:18.23 has been--being acted out. 00:37:18.27\00:37:20.87 Paul says our world is a theater to the universe. 00:37:20.90\00:37:23.91 They're all watching this battle between good and evil. 00:37:23.94\00:37:26.51 At the cross you see Satan's intense love for power and you 00:37:26.54\00:37:31.28 see Christ's power of love. 00:37:31.31\00:37:32.85 It's all at the cross, is the greatest demonstration of Christ 00:37:32.88\00:37:36.72 humbling Himself, Satan exalting himself. 00:37:36.75\00:37:39.79 He says, "Bow down to me. 00:37:39.82\00:37:41.16 I want to be God." 00:37:41.19\00:37:42.49 He wanted to be the Most High. 00:37:42.52\00:37:44.13 So we and all creatures, all intelligent creatures, have 00:37:44.16\00:37:48.13 a choice. 00:37:48.16\00:37:49.53 Now, I'm not denying the sovereignty of God, but I also 00:37:49.56\00:37:52.40 believe that we have freedom. 00:37:52.43\00:37:53.94 Because why does the Bible say choose you this day who you 00:37:53.97\00:37:57.41 will serve? 00:37:57.44\00:37:58.74 Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 00:37:58.77\00:38:02.68 God is not willing that any should perish. 00:38:02.71\00:38:06.15 So we have this probationary time. 00:38:06.18\00:38:08.12 The penalty for sin is death. 00:38:08.15\00:38:10.19 Why aren't we dead yet? 00:38:10.22\00:38:11.59 Why don't--why doesn't everybody die immediately after they sin? 00:38:11.62\00:38:15.89 Christ through His sacrifice purchased time for people to 00:38:15.92\00:38:19.96 understand the issues, the probationary life, where we can 00:38:20.00\00:38:23.10 choose to trust God or to live the selfish existence of 00:38:23.13\00:38:26.70 the devil. 00:38:26.74\00:38:28.04 And there's so much more I can say 'cause you're asking the big 00:38:28.07\00:38:31.51 questions, Josh. 00:38:31.54\00:38:33.41 We have that Cosmic Conflict Magazine, the new Cosmic 00:38:33.44\00:38:36.58 Conflict Magazine, and there's the movie. 00:38:36.61\00:38:39.55 I think it's got, like, a million hits on YouTube, if you 00:38:39.58\00:38:42.28 type in "Cosmic Conflict." 00:38:42.32\00:38:44.65 Or you can request the magazine. 00:38:44.69\00:38:46.42 It's brand-new. 00:38:46.45\00:38:47.76 Jëan: The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:38:47.79\00:38:50.73 You can ask for that magazine. 00:38:50.76\00:38:52.13 It's called the Cosmic Conflict. 00:38:52.16\00:38:54.66 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:38:54.73\00:38:56.53 You can dial #250 on your smartphone and you can and be 00:38:56.56\00:39:00.40 able to get it that way as well. 00:39:00.44\00:39:02.90 Thank you, Josh. 00:39:02.94\00:39:04.31 Minerva in Mexico. 00:39:04.34\00:39:06.14 Minerva, welcome to the program. 00:39:06.17\00:39:08.61 Minerva: Oh, hello, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:39:08.64\00:39:11.58 Thank you for taking my call. 00:39:11.61\00:39:13.28 Doug: We're glad you called. 00:39:13.31\00:39:14.62 Thank you, Minerva. 00:39:14.65\00:39:15.95 And your question tonight. 00:39:15.98\00:39:17.32 Minerva: Thank you. 00:39:17.35\00:39:18.65 Yeah, my question is, should deaconesses be ordained even if 00:39:18.69\00:39:23.56 the Bible doesn't mention it? 00:39:23.59\00:39:26.13 And if they're not supposed to, why do some churches do it? 00:39:26.16\00:39:30.80 Doug: Okay, that's a fair question. 00:39:30.83\00:39:33.54 You know, in the Bible, of course, we have in Acts-- 00:39:33.57\00:39:36.37 is it chapter 6 or 7? 00:39:36.40\00:39:38.21 Well, it's 7 I think where they ordain the deacons. 00:39:38.24\00:39:40.88 And they needed some people that were spirit-filled, some men 00:39:40.91\00:39:44.95 that could help to delegate and carry out some of the more 00:39:44.98\00:39:49.18 mundane business of the church, but very important, so the 00:39:49.22\00:39:52.45 apostles could give themselves more to preaching, to prayer, 00:39:52.49\00:39:55.42 teaching the Word. 00:39:55.46\00:39:56.79 And then we know the word deacon is connected with the Greek 00:39:56.83\00:39:59.73 word servant. 00:39:59.76\00:40:01.10 There were also women that served. 00:40:01.13\00:40:03.43 It doesn't give an example in the Bible of women being 00:40:03.47\00:40:06.74 ordained as deacons, but I don't see where there's any moral 00:40:06.77\00:40:10.61 dilemma with someone placing their hands on a woman and 00:40:10.64\00:40:15.34 blessing them and giving--praying that God will 00:40:15.38\00:40:18.55 give them the Spirit if they're appointed to serve in a 00:40:18.58\00:40:22.12 certain capacity. 00:40:22.15\00:40:23.59 There are areas in the Old Testament where the men, the 00:40:23.62\00:40:27.36 priests had particular ministry. 00:40:27.39\00:40:30.33 But there were also daughters of Aaron, they were the wives of 00:40:30.36\00:40:33.50 the Levites, and they had ministry in the tabernacle too. 00:40:33.53\00:40:37.43 Their ministry often had to do with the garments for 00:40:37.47\00:40:40.74 the priests. 00:40:40.77\00:40:42.07 I think were made by the wives of the Levites. 00:40:42.10\00:40:45.41 So there's ministry and service for both. 00:40:45.44\00:40:49.68 In our church we have deacons and deaconess. 00:40:49.71\00:40:53.38 So you're right, there is no biblical example of laying hands 00:40:53.42\00:40:56.82 on the women who ordained them or commissioned them, but 00:40:56.85\00:41:01.22 setting people aside with prayer, there's no moral problem 00:41:01.26\00:41:03.96 with that. 00:41:03.99\00:41:05.29 Jëan: You know, we have a book. 00:41:05.33\00:41:06.63 It's called "A Woman's Role in Ministry." 00:41:06.66\00:41:08.36 And we'll be happy to send it to anyone who wants to learn more 00:41:08.40\00:41:10.67 about that. 00:41:10.70\00:41:12.03 The number to call is 800-835-6747, and you can ask 00:41:12.07\00:41:15.87 for the book. 00:41:15.90\00:41:17.21 It's called "A Woman's Role in Ministry." 00:41:17.24\00:41:18.57 You can dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for it that 00:41:18.61\00:41:22.24 way as well. 00:41:22.28\00:41:23.58 Shanna in Utah. 00:41:23.61\00:41:24.95 Shanna, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:41:24.98\00:41:26.48 Shanna: Hello. 00:41:26.51\00:41:27.82 Hi, Jëan and Pastor Doug. 00:41:27.85\00:41:29.92 My husband and I love your show. 00:41:29.95\00:41:31.69 Thank you. 00:41:31.72\00:41:33.46 My question is related to the Holy Spirit. 00:41:33.49\00:41:36.59 In John chapter 14, chapter--or verse 16,17, you know, towards 00:41:36.62\00:41:42.33 the end it does say that, "You know Him, for He lives with you 00:41:42.36\00:41:45.60 and He will be in you." 00:41:45.63\00:41:47.70 So that--does that mean that the Holy Spirit is always with us or 00:41:47.74\00:41:51.04 is it appropriate to ask for the Holy Spirit's guidance in our 00:41:51.07\00:41:54.54 daily prayer? 00:41:54.58\00:41:56.11 Doug: Yeah, great question. 00:41:56.14\00:41:58.28 You know, I believe you can prove from the Bible that people 00:41:58.31\00:42:02.32 can have varying relationships with the Lord, and that would 00:42:02.35\00:42:06.09 include God the Spirit, and that God the Spirit comes into our 00:42:06.12\00:42:10.06 lives in varying degrees. 00:42:10.09\00:42:12.66 I believe the apostles had the Holy Spirit when they were 00:42:12.69\00:42:15.73 baptized and began following Jesus, but then at the upper 00:42:15.76\00:42:20.24 room, after the resurrection, it says Christ breathed on them and 00:42:20.27\00:42:23.81 said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." 00:42:23.84\00:42:25.94 But then at Pentecost 40 days later, they're baptized with 00:42:25.97\00:42:30.81 tongues of fire and great power and signs and wonders 00:42:30.85\00:42:33.98 and miracles. 00:42:34.02\00:42:35.35 There's different degrees. 00:42:35.38\00:42:36.69 You can even read in the Old Testament, says the Spirit of 00:42:36.72\00:42:38.72 the Lord came upon David, the Spirit of the Lord came 00:42:38.75\00:42:41.12 upon Samson. 00:42:41.16\00:42:43.66 And it's something I think we should pray for every day 'cause 00:42:43.69\00:42:46.39 you cannot live the Christian life without the 00:42:46.43\00:42:48.26 Christian spirit. 00:42:48.30\00:42:49.76 So Christ said, "If you being evil know how to give good gifts 00:42:49.80\00:42:52.93 to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give 00:42:52.97\00:42:56.47 the Holy Spirit to those that ask?" 00:42:56.50\00:42:59.11 He compares it to bread. 00:42:59.14\00:43:00.54 Bread's something you eat every day. 00:43:00.58\00:43:01.91 Asking for the Holy Spirit is something you would need 00:43:01.94\00:43:04.48 every day. 00:43:04.51\00:43:05.81 Jëan: You know, we have a book. 00:43:05.85\00:43:07.18 It's called "Life in the Spirit" and goes right along with 00:43:07.22\00:43:08.92 this question. 00:43:08.95\00:43:10.25 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:43:10.29\00:43:11.99 The number is 800-835-6747 or just dial #250 on 00:43:12.02\00:43:17.86 your smartphone. 00:43:17.89\00:43:19.23 Ask for the book by name. 00:43:19.26\00:43:20.56 It's called "Life in the Spirit." 00:43:20.60\00:43:22.83 Eva, 9 years old from New York. 00:43:22.86\00:43:25.20 Eva, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:43:25.23\00:43:28.10 Eva: Hello. 00:43:28.14\00:43:29.44 Doug: Hi, thanks for calling. 00:43:29.47\00:43:30.77 What are you doing up so late? 00:43:30.81\00:43:32.37 It's, like, 10 o'clock back there. 00:43:32.41\00:43:35.64 And your question tonight. 00:43:35.68\00:43:37.75 Eva: My question is, how do you stay Lord Jesus Christ and--how 00:43:37.78\00:43:43.99 do you stay close to the Lord Jesus Christ and keep on 00:43:44.02\00:43:46.55 following Him as a child? 00:43:46.59\00:43:48.99 Doug: That's a good question. 00:43:49.02\00:43:50.36 How do we stay close to the Lord as a child? 00:43:50.39\00:43:53.96 Well, you know, the way you stay strong as a child is you eat, 00:43:54.00\00:43:59.07 you breathe, and you exercise. 00:43:59.10\00:44:02.37 The way you stay strong as a Christian is you eat and you 00:44:02.40\00:44:06.27 breathe and you exercise. 00:44:06.31\00:44:08.91 We eat by eating the bread of life, which is the Bible. 00:44:08.94\00:44:12.41 Jesus said you don't live by bread alone but by every word. 00:44:12.45\00:44:15.15 So we ought to read some of the Scriptures every day. 00:44:15.18\00:44:20.16 We breathe by praying. 00:44:20.19\00:44:22.32 The Bible tells us you can just be aware of God. 00:44:22.36\00:44:24.53 Talk to Him all the time, not just when you wake up in 00:44:24.56\00:44:26.70 the morning. 00:44:26.73\00:44:28.00 I heard about a girl your age, Eva, that when she went to sleep 00:44:28.03\00:44:30.97 at night, she threw one of her shoes under her bed. 00:44:31.00\00:44:33.90 And her mother asked why she did that, she said, "I have to get 00:44:33.94\00:44:36.40 on my knees to get my shoe, and then I remember to pray." 00:44:36.44\00:44:40.24 So make sure and pray not only in the morning and when you go 00:44:40.28\00:44:43.18 to bed at night but through the day. 00:44:43.21\00:44:44.65 Just any time you need God's help, talk to Him as 00:44:44.68\00:44:47.22 your friend. 00:44:47.25\00:44:48.58 He's always there even though you don't see Him. 00:44:48.62\00:44:50.59 And then exercise. 00:44:50.62\00:44:52.25 Tell other people about the Lord, and resist the devil, be a 00:44:52.29\00:44:56.52 good example, and that's called exercising your faith, living 00:44:56.56\00:44:59.89 out the light. 00:44:59.93\00:45:01.30 You do those things, you'll stay closer to the Lord. 00:45:01.33\00:45:03.90 Jëan: All right, thank you for your call. 00:45:03.93\00:45:05.33 We've got Chris in California. 00:45:05.37\00:45:07.40 Chris, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:45:07.44\00:45:09.14 Chris: Thank you, pastors. 00:45:09.17\00:45:10.51 Thank you for taking my call. 00:45:10.54\00:45:13.17 In the Bible and as Christians, how should we feel about owning 00:45:13.21\00:45:17.01 a gun or having a gun in our home for self-protection and 00:45:17.05\00:45:22.65 just the use of guns in our life? 00:45:22.68\00:45:24.99 And also with that, the occupation and life of being a 00:45:25.02\00:45:30.83 police officer and having a gun as part of your job, that you 00:45:30.86\00:45:34.36 may take a life. 00:45:34.40\00:45:35.70 What does the Bible say? 00:45:35.73\00:45:37.40 Doug: All right, well, I'll try and give you a biblical answer. 00:45:37.43\00:45:40.94 Paul said--and I don't remember the verse, Pastor Ross, where it 00:45:40.97\00:45:43.64 says that the soldiers or Rome or the government does not bear 00:45:43.67\00:45:47.78 the sword in vain, meaning that, you know, there are authorities 00:45:47.81\00:45:51.48 in government that they have the power to punish sinners. 00:45:51.51\00:45:54.95 It uses the term sword there. 00:45:54.98\00:45:56.35 They had no guns back then. 00:45:56.38\00:45:59.25 So in the temple, God had guards actually that would guard. 00:45:59.29\00:46:05.59 It talks about that in 2 Kings chapter, is it 11, when King 00:46:05.63\00:46:12.03 Joash was being coronated. 00:46:12.07\00:46:14.57 They had guards around him in the temple. 00:46:14.60\00:46:16.74 And Solomon had shields in the temple. 00:46:16.77\00:46:18.81 And so, you know, in our day and age, a lot of churches realize 00:46:18.84\00:46:22.38 it's just a practical tool that you might want to, you know, 00:46:22.41\00:46:27.45 have some training in firearms for protection. 00:46:27.48\00:46:30.62 If someone does not feel comfortable with that, they 00:46:30.65\00:46:33.05 shouldn't do it because if anything is not of faith, 00:46:33.09\00:46:35.29 it's sin. 00:46:35.32\00:46:36.73 Now, coming from my perspective, Pastor Ross has been at our 00:46:36.76\00:46:40.36 place way up in the hills, I have firearms. 00:46:40.40\00:46:42.70 It's not a secret. 00:46:42.73\00:46:44.03 Everybody in the hills does because we got wild animals. 00:46:44.07\00:46:45.70 We got bears and we got, you know, rabbit, animals, 00:46:45.73\00:46:48.94 and rattlesnakes. 00:46:48.97\00:46:50.27 And, you know, it's a tool. 00:46:50.31\00:46:52.81 God forbid I would ever use it against a human. 00:46:52.84\00:46:54.91 I would never want to do that. 00:46:54.94\00:46:56.41 That would take some extreme circumstances of defending my 00:46:56.44\00:46:59.55 family to do something like that, but--and I don't even 00:46:59.58\00:47:02.68 think about it. 00:47:02.72\00:47:04.92 So, you know, I'd say that I would never want to bear arms in 00:47:04.95\00:47:08.46 a war to take another life. 00:47:08.49\00:47:11.16 And I'm very thankful for soldiers that protect our 00:47:11.19\00:47:14.50 country and I'm very thankful for police that protect our 00:47:14.56\00:47:18.23 community, but I think that Christians need to, you know, 00:47:18.27\00:47:22.64 pray about these things. 00:47:22.67\00:47:24.37 And one time the disciples--it's a big question. 00:47:24.41\00:47:27.78 It's a politically--potentially politically divisive question 00:47:27.81\00:47:31.08 too, so I want to be careful. 00:47:31.11\00:47:32.95 But the disciples one time--Jesus said, "And he 00:47:32.98\00:47:36.05 that--if you don't have a sword, sell your garment and get one." 00:47:36.08\00:47:39.12 And the disciples had said, "Look, we've got two swords." 00:47:39.15\00:47:41.16 And Jesus said, "Enough of this." 00:47:41.19\00:47:44.63 In other words, they didn't understand when He talked about 00:47:44.66\00:47:46.56 a sword, Christ said, "I came to send a sword," He meant His Word 00:47:46.59\00:47:50.53 is the sword. 00:47:50.57\00:47:51.90 So He's not telling Christians to arm themselves in 00:47:51.93\00:47:54.70 that statement. 00:47:54.74\00:47:56.04 We need to be armed with the Word of God. 00:47:56.07\00:47:57.51 That's Ephesians chapter 6. 00:51:17.87\00:51:20.54 I struggled for years with an ice cream addiction. 00:51:20.58\00:51:24.25 I mean, it was an addiction. 00:51:24.28\00:51:25.95 It's--not that ice cream is a sin for you, friends, but it 00:51:25.98\00:51:29.12 turned into a sin for me. 00:51:29.15\00:51:30.62 So you can just look up "Cold Confession" on YouTube and 00:51:30.65\00:51:33.09 you'll see that as well. 00:51:33.12\00:51:34.69 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Robert 00:51:34.72\00:51:36.26 in Washington. 00:51:36.29\00:51:37.59 Robert, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:51:37.63\00:51:38.93 Robert: Thank you, Pastor Ross. 00:51:38.96\00:51:40.46 I was going to ask about the first question in your intro 00:51:40.50\00:51:44.07 tonight, who is Michael the archangel? 00:51:44.10\00:51:46.57 Some people say, you know, that he can't be Christ because he's 00:51:46.60\00:51:49.57 not an angel, you know, et cetera, et cetera. 00:51:49.60\00:51:51.81 Doug: Yeah, that's a good question. 00:51:51.84\00:51:53.34 And when we answer this question, I always want to 00:51:53.38\00:51:56.14 preface and say please listen very carefully 'cause, you know, 00:51:56.18\00:51:59.81 some churches teach that you've got this angel called Raphael 00:51:59.85\00:52:02.68 and there's another angel called Michael, and they're always 00:52:02.72\00:52:04.69 portrayed as these powerful cherubs. 00:52:04.72\00:52:09.49 It's a misunderstanding. 00:52:09.52\00:52:11.69 The word archangel means greatest messenger, and the word 00:52:11.73\00:52:17.87 Michael means who is as God, and the phrase Michael the archangel 00:52:17.90\00:52:23.71 is one of the titles of Jesus. 00:52:23.74\00:52:25.64 Jesus is not an angel. 00:52:25.67\00:52:27.64 Jesus is eternal God. 00:52:27.68\00:52:29.04 He's all powerful. 00:52:29.08\00:52:31.01 But it's one of the many titles that you find. 00:52:31.05\00:52:33.92 Now, let me give you some verses. 00:52:33.95\00:52:35.82 You have in Revelation 12 it says, "The dragon and his angels 00:52:35.85\00:52:40.29 fought against Michael, and Michael and his angels fought." 00:52:40.32\00:52:43.69 Well, the dragon is a symbolic name for the devil, Satan. 00:52:43.73\00:52:48.50 Michael is a symbolic name for Christ. 00:52:48.53\00:52:51.87 You read in 1 Thessalonians 4, "The Lord Himself will descend 00:52:51.90\00:52:55.40 from heaven with a shout, and the voice of the archangel." 00:52:55.44\00:52:59.27 The Lord Himself with the voice of the archangel. 00:52:59.31\00:53:02.98 You read in Jude verse 9 that it says Michael comes to 00:53:03.01\00:53:07.42 resurrect Moses. 00:53:07.45\00:53:09.22 Jesus is the resurrection and the life. 00:53:09.25\00:53:11.69 And you can read in Joshua, I forget it's chapter 5, where 00:53:11.72\00:53:18.29 Joshua meets the angel of the Lord. 00:53:18.33\00:53:21.33 And this angel is not like a normal angel. 00:53:21.36\00:53:23.90 This angel says, "Take your shoes off your feet, for this is 00:53:23.93\00:53:26.03 holy ground." 00:53:26.07\00:53:27.37 Well, Gabriel tells John in Revelation 19, "Do not bow down 00:53:27.40\00:53:31.34 and pray to an angel. 00:53:31.37\00:53:32.67 It's a sin. 00:53:32.71\00:53:34.04 Only worship God." 00:53:34.08\00:53:35.38 So who is this angelic warrior that you see in the book 00:53:35.41\00:53:40.02 of Joshua? 00:55:18.18\00:55:20.05 Doug: Yeah, you know, I don't know that this was Paul's 00:55:20.08\00:55:22.42 finest hour. 00:55:22.45\00:55:24.59 I think to some extent that Paul was--he was capitulating to the 00:55:24.62\00:55:29.49 leaders, trying to cooperate with them because he wanted to 00:55:29.52\00:55:34.13 stifle any idea--that there had been false rumors that Paul had 00:55:34.20\00:55:38.17 scuttled the teachings of Moses. 00:55:38.20\00:55:40.64 Paul did not give up the teachings of Moses, neither 00:55:40.67\00:55:43.20 did Jesus. 00:55:43.24\00:55:44.54 Jesus said, "Think not that I have come to destroy the law 00:55:44.57\00:55:47.58 of Moses. 00:55:47.61\00:55:49.14 I've not come to destroy, but to fulfill." 00:55:49.18\00:55:51.41 And Christ said, "Whoever therefore shall break one of the 00:55:51.45\00:55:55.88 least of these commandments and teach men so, he will be least 00:55:55.92\00:55:58.69 in the kingdom of heaven." 00:55:58.72\00:56:00.16 So when it came to the overreaching teachings of Moses 00:56:00.19\00:56:04.43 and what you find in the Old Testament, Paul was in 00:56:04.46\00:56:06.96 full agreement. 00:56:07.00\00:56:08.26 There were certain ceremonial laws that Christ fulfilled that 00:56:08.30\00:56:11.53 the Jewish Christians were trying to impose on the Gentile 00:56:11.57\00:56:14.80 Christians, and Paul said that's not necessary. 00:56:14.84\00:56:16.71 And the Jerusalem council eventually agreed with that in 00:56:16.74\00:56:19.74 Acts chapter 15. 00:56:19.77\00:56:21.74 So--but they wanted to appease the Jews in Jerusalem. 00:56:21.78\00:56:27.55 So they said, "You know, why don't you get out front and 00:56:27.58\00:56:29.42 do this?" 00:56:29.45\00:56:30.75 And it kind of backfired. 00:56:30.79\00:56:32.12 It turned into a riot, and Paul ended up going to jail, and God 00:56:32.15\00:56:37.16 turned it for good in the end. 00:56:37.19\00:56:38.83 Jëan: Well, friends, we do have some email questions, Pastor 00:56:38.86\00:56:41.03 Doug, in the last minute or so before the end of the program. 00:56:41.06\00:56:43.87 Let me ask you a couple of these email questions. 00:56:43.90\00:56:47.40 First question, will the universe and the other planets 00:56:47.44\00:56:50.47 be burnt up when God creates a new earth--a new heavens and a 00:56:50.51\00:56:55.24 new earth? 00:56:55.28\00:56:56.68 Doug: Yeah, that confuses people because they think, "Well, 00:56:56.71\00:56:59.55 what's wrong with the heavens that the heavens would be 00:56:59.58\00:57:01.78 dissolved with fervent heat in 2 Peter chapter 3?" 00:57:01.82\00:57:05.49 The word heavens there is one of the Jewish words for the 00:57:05.52\00:57:08.59 atmosphere around the world, which, you know, is getting 00:57:08.62\00:57:11.53 polluted over time. 00:57:11.56\00:57:13.36 So God is going to create a new, pure atmosphere. 00:57:13.40\00:57:16.10 There's nothing wrong with the stars and the galaxies, and 00:57:16.13\00:57:20.37 there'd be no advantages, no sin out there to be burned up. 00:57:20.40\00:57:24.01 It's talking about new atmosphere. 00:57:24.04\00:57:26.44 You know, in Genesis it says God separated the waters from above 00:57:26.47\00:57:29.61 the heavens, from the waters below the heavens. 00:57:29.64\00:57:31.45 It's the atmosphere around the world that we're talking about 00:57:31.48\00:57:34.22 that'll be made new. 00:57:34.25\00:57:35.55 Jëan: All right, Arlene is asking, "What does it mean when 00:57:35.58\00:57:37.62 it says--when you say somebody is resting in peace?" 00:57:37.65\00:57:41.49 Doug: Yeah, Jesus, when Lazarus died, he said, "Our friend 00:57:41.52\00:57:44.66 Lazarus sleepeth." 00:57:44.69\00:57:46.66 And when a person dies in the Lord, they are sleeping a 00:57:46.70\00:57:50.17 peaceful, dreamless sleep until the resurrection and they are 00:57:50.20\00:57:54.67 resting, and hopefully they're going to be woke up in the 00:57:54.70\00:57:58.81 first resurrection. 00:57:58.84\00:58:00.51 Hey, friends, you can tell we're out of time. 00:58:00.54\00:58:01.94 God bless. 00:58:01.98\00:58:03.31 We'll study His Word with you again together next week. 00:58:03.35\00:58:08.18 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:58:08.22\00:58:10.85 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:58:10.89\00:58:14.56 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:58:14.59\00:58:18.63 a faith-based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:58:18.66\00:58:22.60 ¤¤¤ 00:58:22.96\00:58:28.97
