male announcer: It is the bestselling book in history. 00:00:03.13\00:00:05.73 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, and it's 00:00:05.83\00:00:10.21 words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, should 00:00:10.34\00:00:14.31 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.34\00:00:16.48 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.51\00:00:19.95 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate and practical 00:00:19.98\00:00:24.59 answers to all your Bible questions. 00:00:24.62\00:00:28.39 This broadcast is a previously-recorded episode. 00:00:28.42\00:00:31.36 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.10 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.13\00:00:39.00 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:39.03\00:00:44.51 Now, here's your host from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:44.54\00:00:48.08 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:48.11\00:00:50.08 Doug Batchelor: Hello, listening friends. 00:00:50.11\00:00:51.45 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:00:51.48\00:00:53.21 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:53.25\00:00:56.45 On January 15, 1919, the North End neighborhood of Boston, 00:00:56.48\00:01:01.62 Massachusetts experienced a tsunami. 00:01:01.66\00:01:04.79 Not a flood of water but of molasses. 00:01:04.83\00:01:08.10 The great molasses flood disaster occurred in the middle 00:01:08.13\00:01:11.00 of the day when a large storage tank, 50 feet tall and 90 feet 00:01:11.03\00:01:15.70 wide, filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst. 00:01:15.74\00:01:21.31 The sudden eruption of 13,000 tons of molasses created a 00:01:21.34\00:01:25.61 deadly wave of sticky, brown syrup 25 feet high that rushed 00:01:25.65\00:01:30.25 through the streets at an estimated 35 miles an hour. 00:01:30.29\00:01:34.02 The nearby firehouse was swept off its foundation and the 00:01:34.06\00:01:37.43 sugary syrup created a swath of destruction half a mile long. 00:01:37.46\00:01:42.23 As the rushing molasses met with the cold Boston air, it 00:01:42.26\00:01:45.70 solidified and many people and animals were trapped in the 00:01:45.73\00:01:49.17 thick ooze like insects on flypaper. 00:01:49.20\00:01:52.61 The bizarre disaster killed 21 people, injured 150, not 00:01:52.64\00:01:57.18 to mention killing multiple horses and dogs. 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.25 The molasses were being fermented to produce ethanol, 00:02:00.28\00:02:03.25 the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages. 00:02:03.28\00:02:06.69 Because prohibition was about to start, the owners of the 00:02:06.72\00:02:09.89 distilling business wanted to top off the poorly-built tank to 00:02:09.92\00:02:13.73 ensure maximum profits from the alcohol sales. 00:02:13.76\00:02:17.27 Millions of people today are still stuck in the deadly 00:02:17.30\00:02:20.87 addiction of alcoholism. 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.17 Boy, that's a really bizarre disaster, Pastor Ross, a wave of 00:02:24.21\00:02:29.21 molasses going through a city. 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.08 Jëan Ross: I know. 00:02:31.11\00:02:32.45 Well, it's kind of sad 21 people died, but you can imagine the 00:02:32.48\00:02:35.32 cleanup after that. 00:02:35.35\00:02:36.69 How did they get all that gooey stuff swept up? 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.42 I guess you wouldn't sweep it up. 00:02:39.45\00:02:40.76 You'd have to use a shovel and kind of scrape it off 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.89 the ground. 00:02:42.92\00:02:44.23 And yeah, it must have taken a long time. 00:02:44.26\00:02:45.86 Doug: You know, I read about it and--at first, of course, it was 00:02:45.89\00:02:49.23 warm 'cause they had loaded as much as they could the 00:02:49.26\00:02:52.03 day before. 00:02:52.07\00:02:53.37 So when it burst it flowed, but then it met the January air 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.67 in Boston. 00:02:56.71\00:02:58.04 And molasses is slow in good weather. 00:02:58.07\00:02:59.84 It turned into like--it almost hardened. 00:02:59.87\00:03:02.18 And I think they were able to chip a lot of it and shovel it, 00:03:02.21\00:03:04.25 but it took a year to clean it up. 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.18 And they said for the next, oh, 20, 30 years, every summer you 00:03:07.22\00:03:11.49 could smell molasses in the neighborhood. 00:03:11.52\00:03:14.32 It just lingered for a long time. 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.56 But, you know, sad thing was they were really using the 00:03:16.59\00:03:20.30 molasses ultimately to make alcohol. 00:03:20.33\00:03:23.16 You think of all those people that were stuck and trapped and 00:03:23.20\00:03:27.90 caught in this sticky ooze, and you and I have met people 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.91 through the years that they are trapped in alcoholism. 00:03:31.94\00:03:36.51 And I'm surprised that sometimes I meet Christians that think, 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.91 "Well, it's okay for a Christian to drink a little alcohol." 00:03:39.95\00:03:43.35 And I don't know if they realize that one out of seven people 00:03:43.39\00:03:46.92 that drinks becomes an alcoholic. 00:03:46.96\00:03:49.06 So how much should a Christian support something that destroys 00:03:49.09\00:03:52.79 one out of seven people that touches it? 00:03:52.83\00:03:55.70 Jëan: Well, you know, we do have a book that addresses that. 00:03:55.73\00:03:58.20 Sometimes there's some confusion. 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.53 For example, the New Testament read--we read about Jesus 00:03:59.57\00:04:02.80 turning the water into wine, and people are wondering, "Well, was 00:04:02.84\00:04:05.57 that an alcoholic beverage?" 00:04:05.61\00:04:06.91 Well, the answer is no. 00:04:06.94\00:04:08.28 And, you know, you can read the context and it explains 00:04:08.31\00:04:10.65 a lot more. 00:04:10.68\00:04:11.91 Of course, the word wine in the Bible doesn't always rem--refer 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.18 to an alcoholic drink. 00:04:14.22\00:04:15.55 It just could be fresh grape juice. 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.59 We do have a book that's called "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:04:17.62\00:04:20.02 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and ask. 00:04:20.06\00:04:22.02 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:04:22.06\00:04:25.46 Ask for the book. 00:04:25.49\00:04:26.83 It's called "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:04:26.86\00:04:28.86 Or you can dial #250 on your smartphone and say, "Bible 00:04:28.90\00:04:32.83 Answers Live," and you can ask for that book and we can send 00:04:32.87\00:04:35.44 you a digital copy. 00:04:35.47\00:04:37.57 Well, Pastor Doug, before we go to the phone lines, let's start 00:04:37.61\00:04:40.31 with a word of prayer. 00:04:40.34\00:04:41.68 Dear Lord, we are so grateful that we do have this time where 00:04:41.71\00:04:43.78 we can open up Your Word and study. 00:04:43.81\00:04:46.18 Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and truth will set 00:04:46.21\00:04:48.38 you free." 00:04:48.42\00:04:49.65 And, Lord, that's our desire, to learn truth from Your Word. 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.09 So bless this program tonight. 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.46 Be with those who are listening wherever they are. 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.52 In Jesus's name, amen. 00:04:55.56\00:04:57.36 Doug: Amen. 00:04:57.39\00:04:58.73 Jëan: You know, Pastor Doug, we didn't mention it, but let me 00:04:58.76\00:05:00.73 mention it again. 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.03 If you have a Bible-related question, here is the 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.37 phone line. 00:05:04.40\00:05:05.73 It's 800-463-7297. 00:05:05.77\00:05:09.10 That's 800-GOD-SAYS, 800-463-7297. 00:05:09.14\00:05:14.28 If you don't get in right away, just stay on the phone. 00:05:14.31\00:05:17.01 Somebody will answer your call, and we'll get you lined up. 00:05:17.05\00:05:21.25 All right, first caller that we have then is Anthony in 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.69 New York. 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.02 Yeah, you're on the air. 00:05:25.05\00:05:26.35 Anthony: Yeah. 00:05:26.39\00:05:27.72 Well, let me get right into it. 00:05:27.76\00:05:29.06 My question is from 1 Timothy chapter 2, verses 14 and 15. 00:05:29.09\00:05:34.73 Well, it kind of starts before that, but I'll just read 14. 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.97 It says, "And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being 00:05:37.00\00:05:40.44 deceived was in the transgression. 00:05:40.47\00:05:43.14 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they 00:05:43.17\00:05:48.24 continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety." 00:05:48.28\00:05:51.51 So my question is very simple. 00:05:51.55\00:05:53.75 What does it mean that she will be saved in childbearing? 00:05:53.78\00:05:58.02 I heard someone intimate that--you know, that this just 00:05:58.05\00:06:02.12 shows that the wife is supposed to stay home with the children 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.86 and things of that nature. 00:06:05.89\00:06:07.23 I wasn't too sure about that, but I just kind of want to know 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.70 what that means, this verse. 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.57 Doug: Yeah, well, I think in part. 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.23 You remember one of the curses that God pronounced. 00:06:13.27\00:06:16.97 He had a curse for Adam and He had a curse for Eve, and He 00:06:17.01\00:06:19.21 said, "In pain you will conceive and bring forth children." 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.78 It's interesting the word conceive there is not just 00:06:21.81\00:06:24.88 giving birth. 00:06:24.91\00:06:26.25 Conception happens 9 months before birth. 00:06:26.28\00:06:27.85 And some have thought, was that morning sickness? 00:06:27.88\00:06:30.39 And so--and then, of course, there's pain in 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.62 childbirth itself. 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.46 But Paul is saying here, "You'll be saved in childbearing." 00:06:34.49\00:06:38.46 It's not just in the--you know, God will, I think, add a 00:06:38.49\00:06:41.76 blessing in the actual delivery process, but I think that 00:06:41.80\00:06:46.40 through the process of mothering that there's something 00:06:46.43\00:06:50.11 redemptive that they experience and, you know, God's presence is 00:06:50.14\00:06:55.14 there to help them and guide them and sanctify them, so-- 00:06:55.18\00:06:59.68 Jëan: Yeah, and if you look--if you go back in Genesis 00:06:59.71\00:07:02.98 and you read the account, it says God cursed the ground for 00:07:03.02\00:07:05.85 man's sake. 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.22 So beginning there, you know, it produced thorns and thistles, 00:07:07.26\00:07:11.06 and it says you're going to have to work the soil in order for it 00:07:11.09\00:07:14.36 to produce in the sweat of your brow. 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.63 So there was a benefit. 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.00 There was a blessing, and there is a blessing in work. 00:07:18.03\00:07:21.20 And God designed that Adam was to work, and that's still 00:07:21.24\00:07:24.97 true today. 00:07:25.01\00:07:26.47 Just like there was a blessing in work, there is a blessing 00:07:26.51\00:07:30.25 in--for the mother to give birth and raise children. 00:07:30.28\00:07:34.92 There is character development in both cases, both working as 00:07:34.95\00:07:39.42 well as raising your children. 00:07:39.45\00:07:40.76 It doesn't mean that the dad does not have a part to play, he 00:07:40.79\00:07:43.83 very much does, but the prime responsibility of raising the 00:07:43.86\00:07:48.06 children falls on the shoulders of the mother. 00:07:48.10\00:07:50.53 She's the one that creates the atmosphere, provides the 00:07:50.57\00:07:53.74 guidance for children being raised. 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.30 Doug: Yeah, some of the commentators I was looking at 00:07:56.34\00:07:58.31 while you were sharing there, they're saying that, you know, 00:07:58.34\00:08:01.31 the love of a mother for a child teaches them something also of 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.11 the love of God for His children and having children they 00:08:04.15\00:08:08.65 see that. 00:08:08.68\00:08:10.02 Jëan: Okay, very good. 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.35 All right. 00:08:11.39\00:08:12.72 Well, thank you, Anthony. 00:08:12.75\00:08:14.06 Good question. 00:08:14.09\00:08:15.42 We're going to go--let's try Glenn and Linda, if they 00:08:15.46\00:08:16.89 are ready, in Ohio. 00:08:16.93\00:08:18.26 Glenn, Linda, welcome to the program. 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.59 Are you there? 00:08:19.63\00:08:20.96 Glenn: Yes, we are, and thank you very much for taking 00:08:20.96\00:08:22.60 our call. 00:08:22.63\00:08:23.93 Good evening to you. 00:08:23.97\00:08:25.30 It's zero where I live right now, so I hope that my question 00:08:25.33\00:08:29.67 will be above zero. 00:08:29.70\00:08:32.14 It concerns Enoch. 00:08:32.17\00:08:34.91 In the Bible it says that Enoch walks with God and that led to 00:08:34.94\00:08:40.15 him being translated and he didn't see death. 00:08:40.18\00:08:43.59 I think there might be a mix-up in the translation of that part 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.26 of the Bible because elsewhere in the Bible it says that 00:08:47.29\00:08:50.79 Enoch died. 00:08:50.83\00:08:52.59 In the 13th--the 11th chapter of Hebrews, verse 13 it says, "All 00:08:52.63\00:08:58.50 these died," and his name is included in that all these. 00:08:58.53\00:09:02.87 Can you help me? 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.21 Doug: Yeah, I appreciate that. 00:09:04.24\00:09:05.57 In Hebrews he's going through and he's talking about people, 00:09:05.61\00:09:09.94 the faithful fathers and mothers that had died in faith. 00:09:09.98\00:09:15.65 They're examples of faith. 00:09:15.68\00:09:17.52 Paul, I think, identifies that Enoch is an exception 'cause 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.29 even in his talking about Enoch it says that he was not for God 00:09:20.32\00:09:25.33 took him. 00:09:25.36\00:09:26.66 So--and then you also read that in the Old Testament where it 00:09:26.70\00:09:31.00 says, you know, he walked with God and he was not for God 00:09:31.03\00:09:33.94 took him. 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.27 So I think Enoch is the exception that Paul is making in 00:09:35.30\00:09:37.37 Hebrews 13--11:13. 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.04 Jëan: And I think the emphasis there is that those who died 00:09:39.07\00:09:41.98 died in faith. 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.91 Not necessarily meaning that all died because obviously Enoch 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.41 wasn't, but those who died died in faith; and that's the 00:09:46.45\00:09:50.15 emphasis in the passage. 00:09:50.19\00:09:51.52 Not necessarily that every single person listed died but 00:09:51.55\00:09:55.59 rather those who died died in faith, which would be true of 00:09:55.62\00:09:59.59 everyone except Enoch and Elijah. 00:09:59.63\00:10:03.37 All right, thank you. 00:10:03.40\00:10:04.70 Doug: By the way, yeah-- 00:10:04.73\00:10:06.37 Jëan: Go ahead. You're going to add something. 00:10:06.40\00:10:07.70 Doug: Well, I was going to say Moses and Elijah appeared to 00:10:07.74\00:10:10.87 Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration, but that 00:10:10.91\00:10:13.41 doesn't help my argument. 00:10:13.44\00:10:14.74 So I'm going to drop it. 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.11 Jëan: Yeah, Moses did die and was resurrected. 00:10:16.14\00:10:17.91 All right, let's see. 00:10:17.95\00:10:19.65 Yulani is in Washington. 00:10:19.68\00:10:23.89 Yuliana. 00:10:23.92\00:10:25.25 Yuliana, welcome. 00:10:25.29\00:10:26.59 Yuliana: Hi. 00:10:26.62\00:10:27.92 Doug: Hello. 00:10:27.96\00:10:29.29 Thanks for calling. 00:10:29.32\00:10:30.56 Yuliana: My question is God says to rest on Saturdays, but why do 00:10:30.59\00:10:37.07 we go to church? 00:10:37.10\00:10:40.94 Doug: So God says rest. 00:10:40.97\00:10:42.27 Well, actually God doesn't say rest on Saturdays. 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.04 He says rest on the seventh day, and we know that Jesus rose on 00:10:44.07\00:10:48.24 the first day, which is--you look at any calendar and 00:10:48.28\00:10:50.98 that's Sunday. 00:10:51.01\00:10:52.78 The seventh day would be the day before that, which is Saturday. 00:10:52.81\00:10:56.69 And so biblically the seventh day of the week is the Sabbath. 00:10:56.72\00:11:01.66 Jëan: So she's wondering probably, Pastor Doug, if we 00:11:01.69\00:11:03.79 need to rest on Sabbath, why do we have to get up and put on our 00:11:03.83\00:11:08.16 nice clothes and go to church? 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.50 Why not stay home? 00:11:09.53\00:11:10.87 Doug: Yeah. 00:11:10.90\00:11:12.20 Well, in the commandment--this is one of the Ten Commandments. 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.90 It says you shall not do your--it's talking about 00:11:13.94\00:11:15.27 your labor, meaning your la--regular labor, but it calls 00:11:15.30\00:11:20.14 the Sabbath a holy convocation. 00:11:20.18\00:11:21.98 And then you look at the example of Jesus, it says as his 00:11:22.01\00:11:24.91 custom was. 00:11:24.95\00:11:26.25 Is that Mark chapter 2? It's also in Luke--is it Luke 4? 00:11:26.28\00:11:29.68 As his custom was, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day 00:11:29.72\00:11:33.12 and stood up to read the Scriptures. 00:11:33.15\00:11:34.46 So gathering together for worship. 00:11:34.49\00:11:37.29 And it even says in heaven. 00:11:37.33\00:11:39.29 In Isaiah 66 it says that, "From one Sabbath to another, all 00:11:39.33\00:11:42.80 flesh will come together to worship before Me." 00:11:42.83\00:11:46.10 So gathering together to worship is part of Sabbath-keeping, but 00:11:46.13\00:11:50.94 that doesn't mean the whole day you're in church. 00:11:50.97\00:11:52.71 There's also time for rest, good time also to visit maybe people 00:11:52.74\00:11:56.71 who are shut in or need encouragement or give Bible 00:11:56.75\00:11:58.78 studies as Jesus said the Sabbath is a day for doing good, 00:11:58.81\00:12:02.68 and probably a good day to weather permitting. 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.62 Get out in nature, but--hopefully that helps 00:12:04.65\00:12:07.99 a little bit, Yuliana. 00:12:08.02\00:12:10.13 Jëan: The verse you're referring to, Luke chapter 4, verse 16. 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.19 Says that, "As--" Speaking of Jesus, "As his custom was, he 00:12:13.23\00:12:16.73 went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.80 to read." 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.14 Doug: Very good. 00:12:20.17\00:12:21.50 Thank you. 00:12:21.54\00:12:22.84 And we do have a--both a magazine and 00:12:22.87\00:12:24.21 a study guide on that. 00:12:24.24\00:12:25.54 Jëan: That's right. 00:12:25.57\00:12:26.91 It's called--the study guide is called "Forgotten Day 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.31 of History." 00:12:28.34\00:12:29.68 And we'll be happy to send that to anyone who calls and asks. 00:12:29.71\00:12:32.15 And the other magazine is entitled--I'm trying to think of 00:12:32.18\00:12:35.48 the name there, Pastor Doug. 00:12:35.52\00:12:36.85 Doug: "The Day of the Lord." 00:12:36.89\00:12:38.19 Jëan: "Day of the Lord." 00:12:38.22\00:12:39.55 That's right. 00:12:39.59\00:12:40.89 Excellent magazine. 00:12:40.92\00:12:42.22 Next caller that we have is Elizabeth in Colorado. 00:12:42.26\00:12:43.59 Elizabeth, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:12:43.63\00:12:45.59 Elizabeth: Hi. Yes. 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.26 My question is, what is the song for the 144,000? 00:12:48.30\00:12:58.01 Doug: Well, you know, it--it's a song of redemption. 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.31 It doesn't give the words to the song. 00:13:00.34\00:13:02.64 But after the children of Israel--let me back up. 00:13:02.68\00:13:06.01 Everything you find in Revelation--virtually everything 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.08 you find in Revelation you'll find the genesis of it in the 00:13:08.12\00:13:10.79 Old Testament, and there's so many things in Revelation that 00:13:10.82\00:13:15.06 are referring to something else in the Old Testament. 00:13:15.09\00:13:17.66 Of course, there were 12 tribes in Israel and they had 12 00:13:17.69\00:13:21.10 judges, and so you end up with 12 times 12,000 in Revelation. 00:13:21.13\00:13:25.73 Talks about when the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea and 00:13:25.77\00:13:28.20 when they were delivered they sang the song of Moses, and 00:13:28.24\00:13:32.31 Moses taught them a song too in Deuteronomy at the end. 00:13:32.34\00:13:35.78 And so it's a song of deliverance and--that they sing 00:13:35.81\00:13:39.75 because they've experienced this great liberation, 00:13:39.78\00:13:41.98 this deliverance. 00:13:42.02\00:13:43.35 You know, when we're happy, we sing a song. 00:13:43.39\00:13:45.42 So the 144,000 have come through great tribulation and they have 00:13:45.45\00:13:48.79 this song of deliverance they sing. 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.76 Doesn't give us the exact words, but we do have a book that talks 00:13:50.79\00:13:53.83 more about the 144,000. 00:13:53.86\00:13:56.06 And I think one of the keys to their song is in their names. 00:13:56.10\00:13:59.50 When you look at the names of the 144,000 it's the names of 00:13:59.53\00:14:03.81 the 12 tribes, but they're given in an order that is unique to 00:14:03.84\00:14:07.44 only Revelation and each name--like the word Judah means 00:14:07.48\00:14:11.91 "I will praise the Lord," and then it says, "He--for He has 00:14:11.95\00:14:15.62 looked on me." 00:14:15.65\00:14:16.95 When you put their names and their definitions together, it 00:14:16.99\00:14:19.45 tells a story. 00:14:19.49\00:14:20.79 It's probably similar to the song of the 144,000. 00:14:20.82\00:14:24.69 Jëan: All right, we do have that book. 00:14:24.73\00:14:26.03 It's called "Who Shall Sing the Song?" 00:14:26.06\00:14:27.56 And it's about the 144,000. 00:14:27.60\00:14:29.50 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:14:29.53\00:14:32.87 You can just ask for that book by name. 00:14:32.90\00:14:35.14 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the song 00:14:35.17\00:14:39.14 about--the book about the 144,000. 00:14:39.17\00:14:42.54 Thank you, Elizabeth. 00:14:42.58\00:14:43.91 Next caller that we have is Sabin Adele listening in Canada. 00:14:43.95\00:14:48.92 Sabin, welcome to the program. 00:14:48.95\00:14:50.79 Savin: Hello, pastors. 00:14:50.82\00:14:52.65 Doug: Evening. 00:14:52.69\00:14:54.02 Savin: I have a question. 00:14:54.06\00:14:55.36 Why was Jesus angry at the people in the temple? 00:14:55.39\00:15:02.33 Doug: Yeah. 00:15:02.36\00:15:03.67 When Jesus went into the temple--and this happened on two 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.20 occasions, once at the beginning of his ministry and once in the 00:15:06.23\00:15:09.27 week before he was crucified. 00:15:09.30\00:15:11.47 He went into the temple, and people would come for the feast. 00:15:11.51\00:15:14.84 They'd come sometimes from hundreds of miles away. 00:15:14.88\00:15:18.08 Many of the Jews would come from around the Roman Empire. 00:15:18.11\00:15:21.28 They were to bring their sacrifices. 00:15:21.32\00:15:23.45 But they couldn't bring their sacrifice lamb with them 00:15:23.49\00:15:25.99 hundreds of miles, so they'd get to Jerusalem and they'd 00:15:26.02\00:15:27.89 buy them. 00:15:27.92\00:15:29.26 And some of the priests had kind of created a monopoly where you 00:15:29.29\00:15:33.33 had to use temple money to buy your sacrifice. 00:15:33.36\00:15:36.43 You had to exchange the money there in the temple. 00:15:36.46\00:15:38.87 You couldn't use Roman money because it had Caesar's head on 00:15:38.90\00:15:41.17 it and that was idolatry. 00:15:41.20\00:15:42.94 And you had to buy their perfectly-inspected sacrifices, 00:15:42.97\00:15:46.71 and there was greatly marked up and there was haggling over 00:15:46.74\00:15:49.91 prices and they smelled the animals and they heard the birds 00:15:49.94\00:15:53.78 cooing and the cattle lowing. 00:15:53.82\00:15:55.18 And Jesus walked into the temple courtyard, which was supposed to 00:15:55.22\00:15:58.45 be a sacred place of prayer and they turned it into a flea 00:15:58.49\00:16:03.16 market and a bazaar. 00:16:03.19\00:16:04.89 Lots of noise and smells. 00:16:04.93\00:16:06.96 And Jesus said, "Take these things hence. 00:16:07.00\00:16:08.73 Take them out of here. 00:16:08.76\00:16:10.53 For you--my Father's house is to be a house of prayer," that's 00:16:10.57\00:16:13.57 from Isaiah 58, "and you have made it a den of thieves." 00:16:13.60\00:16:17.51 So it says he made a whip of cords. 00:16:17.54\00:16:19.61 It doesn't say he whipped anybody. 00:16:19.64\00:16:21.74 I think all he had to do was say it and hold it. 00:16:21.78\00:16:24.51 They got the idea and everyone--all the money changers 00:16:24.55\00:16:27.32 ran out. 00:16:27.35\00:16:28.58 Jesus could not have been very frightening 'cause it says the 00:16:28.62\00:16:31.95 children gathered around him immediately after that. 00:16:31.99\00:16:35.19 So the wicked ran, and the children came. 00:16:35.22\00:16:39.09 Jëan: Was as if the divinity of Christ sort of flashed through 00:16:39.13\00:16:41.50 his humanity. 00:16:41.53\00:16:42.86 And those wicked leaders, those people that were making money 00:16:42.90\00:16:46.43 and buying and selling, they saw that divinity and they were just 00:16:46.47\00:16:49.57 filled with fear and almost stumbled over themselves to get 00:16:49.60\00:16:52.44 out of the way. 00:16:52.47\00:16:53.78 Doug: He did actually throw over their tables. 00:16:53.81\00:16:55.14 The Bible says he flipped over the tables of the money changers 00:16:55.18\00:16:57.88 and told them, "Take these things out." 00:16:57.91\00:17:00.68 Jëan: All right, thank you. 00:17:00.72\00:17:02.05 Good question. 00:17:02.08\00:17:03.39 Next caller that we have is Dwensky in Florida. 00:17:03.42\00:17:05.95 Dwensky, welcome to the program. 00:17:05.99\00:17:07.99 Dwensky: Yeah, thank you for having me. 00:17:08.02\00:17:10.06 My question is in Genesis 6, verse 4 when it talked about 00:17:10.09\00:17:16.36 there was giants on the earth in those days and also afterwards. 00:17:16.40\00:17:21.64 When they say that, how tall do you think Adam and Eve were when 00:17:21.67\00:17:25.51 it comes to those back in the days? 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.61 Doug: Yeah, well, all I could give you is an estimate. 00:17:27.64\00:17:31.58 I've read one commentary where it says that Eve may have been 00:17:31.61\00:17:35.35 18 feet tall and Adam 20. 00:17:35.38\00:17:38.15 And I know we think, "Wow, where do you get that?" 00:17:38.19\00:17:40.66 Well, for one thing, we look at the fossil record of ancient 00:17:40.69\00:17:46.13 mammals and they were huge. 00:17:46.16\00:17:48.90 I think I did one last week on armadillos, and they had 00:17:48.93\00:17:51.90 armadillos--a typical one now weighs, you know, 20 pounds, but 00:17:51.93\00:17:55.10 they had armadillos that weighed as much as a car. 00:17:55.14\00:17:58.71 There were sloths that were 13 feet tall on these big 00:17:58.74\00:18:02.04 mastodons, saber-toothed tigers twice as big as a tiger now. 00:18:02.08\00:18:05.85 And so you look at the massive size of the mammals before the 00:18:05.88\00:18:09.95 flood and the vegetation that produced those coal beds and how 00:18:09.98\00:18:14.69 the atmosphere must have been different, and the age of man 00:18:14.72\00:18:18.63 was so much bigger or longer then that it makes sense that he 00:18:18.66\00:18:22.10 was bigger too. 00:18:22.13\00:18:23.53 And so the exact size is not given in the Bible, but I think 00:18:23.57\00:18:27.07 by today's standards Adam would have been a giant. 00:18:27.10\00:18:29.57 I think the tallest man in modern times was 8 feet tall. 00:18:29.60\00:18:35.21 Waldsworth or Waldo, I forget. 00:18:35.24\00:18:37.55 Anyway--but yeah, there's no real Scripture that says how 00:18:37.58\00:18:41.32 tall he was. 00:18:41.35\00:18:42.65 Tells us Goliath was roughly 9 1/2 feet. 00:18:42.68\00:18:46.29 And there was a king of the Amalekites--no, not 00:18:46.32\00:18:51.06 the Amalekites. 00:18:51.09\00:18:52.46 The king of the Anakim who was--he had a bed 13 00:18:52.49\00:18:56.06 feet tall--long. 00:18:56.10\00:18:58.20 So if he fit his bed, he was pretty tall. 00:18:58.23\00:19:02.14 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Josh in Iowa. 00:19:02.17\00:19:05.14 Josh, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:19:05.17\00:19:08.38 Josh: Hi. Thank you for having me. 00:19:08.41\00:19:10.41 Doug, I am an annihilationist just like you, but I--my 00:19:10.45\00:19:15.65 question pertains to the lake of fire because I--I've done some 00:19:15.68\00:19:20.26 research on the term lake of fire and apparently it's a 00:19:20.29\00:19:23.86 nickname the Jews had for the Dead Sea. 00:19:23.89\00:19:26.96 And so if that's the case, that means that God is going to 00:19:27.00\00:19:29.46 destroy sinners in the end by drowning them as opposed to 00:19:29.50\00:19:32.97 burning them. 00:19:33.00\00:19:34.30 So I guess my question for you is, is in fact the lake of fire 00:19:34.34\00:19:38.21 a reference to the Dead Sea? 00:19:38.24\00:19:39.57 And if that's the case, then is God going to drown believers as 00:19:39.61\00:19:43.11 opposed to destroying them with actual fire? 00:19:43.14\00:19:46.21 Doug: Yeah, the reason that the Dead Sea was sometimes nicknamed 00:19:46.25\00:19:50.49 lake of fire is because it was on the borders of Sodom and 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.12 Gomorrah that were destroyed with fire--literal fire 00:19:53.15\00:19:56.59 and brimstone. 00:19:56.62\00:19:57.93 So it does talk about fire. 00:19:57.96\00:19:59.53 God will rain fire and brimstone out of heaven, is that 00:19:59.56\00:20:01.76 Revelation 20, on them. 00:20:01.80\00:20:03.83 So I think the lake of fire is spoken of. 00:20:03.87\00:20:06.53 And for our friends listening, my friend Josh when he says he's 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.84 an annihilationist, what that means is he believes in hell, 00:20:09.87\00:20:12.21 but he believes that the wicked, like I do and Pastor Ross, will 00:20:12.24\00:20:15.41 ultimately be annihilated. 00:20:15.44\00:20:16.75 It says that they are burnt up, second death. 00:20:16.78\00:20:18.91 They are no more, no more pain, and God makes all things new. 00:20:18.95\00:20:23.08 The idea of the wicked being tormented through endless ages, 00:20:23.12\00:20:27.46 suffering with no end we do not think is biblical. 00:20:27.49\00:20:30.76 By the way, we have a lesson on that as well. 00:20:30.79\00:20:33.76 So I think the lake of fire is a literal lake, to answer 00:20:33.80\00:20:35.50 Josh's question. 00:20:35.53\00:20:36.83 Jëan: The study guide is called "Is the Devil in Charge 00:20:36.87\00:20:39.07 of Hell?" 00:20:39.10\00:20:40.40 Actually a very interesting study. 00:20:40.44\00:20:41.94 We'll be happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:20:41.97\00:20:43.91 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:20:43.94\00:20:47.71 And you can ask for that study guide "Is the Devil in Charge 00:20:47.74\00:20:49.91 of Hell?" 00:20:49.94\00:20:51.28 You can dial #250 on your smartphone. 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.62 You'll be able to order the lesson that way as well, 00:20:53.65\00:20:55.95 actually get a digital download of that study guide. 00:20:55.98\00:21:00.22 Our next caller that we have is Robert in Washington. 00:21:00.26\00:21:02.99 Robert, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:21:03.02\00:21:05.29 Robert: Yes, I was just wondering--I just was reading 00:21:05.33\00:21:08.13 tonight in Matthew 3:15. 00:21:08.16\00:21:11.17 We know that Jesus was sinless, but then he says to John for him 00:21:11.20\00:21:16.04 to baptize him because it would fulfill all righteousness. 00:21:16.07\00:21:19.81 So what does that mean? 00:21:19.84\00:21:21.24 Doug: Yeah, well, when John saw Jesus coming to him for baptism, 00:21:21.28\00:21:25.01 he's mystified 'cause he knews-- knows that Jesus is the sinless 00:21:25.05\00:21:28.65 Son of God that will take away the sin of the world. 00:21:28.68\00:21:30.69 That's how John introduced him. 00:21:30.72\00:21:32.02 He's wondering, "Why are you ba--wanting me to baptize you? 00:21:32.05\00:21:36.76 You're sinless. 00:21:36.79\00:21:38.13 You should baptize me." 00:21:38.16\00:21:39.46 Jesus said, "Permit it," or suffer it, "to be so now, for 00:21:39.49\00:21:41.76 thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." 00:21:41.80\00:21:44.90 So Jesus sets an example for us of being baptized; and I think 00:21:44.93\00:21:49.07 Christ was not baptized for his sin, but in the same way that 00:21:49.10\00:21:52.71 Jesus died for our sins not because he sinned but he died in 00:21:52.74\00:21:57.15 place of us. 00:21:57.18\00:21:58.51 There are some people who cannot be baptized like the thief on 00:21:58.55\00:22:01.32 the cross. 00:22:01.35\00:22:02.68 I think Jesus was dying--was being baptized and basically not 00:22:02.72\00:22:06.32 only as our example but--that he could give us credit or give 00:22:06.35\00:22:11.69 someone credit for his baptism. 00:22:11.73\00:22:14.36 And also Christ began his ministry at his baptism. 00:22:14.40\00:22:18.40 When he came out of the water he was not only washed in the water 00:22:18.43\00:22:21.84 then the Holy Spirit came down, he was baptized in the water in 00:22:21.87\00:22:24.81 the Spirit. 00:22:24.84\00:22:26.17 He said to us, "Unless you're born of the water and Spirit, 00:22:26.21\00:22:28.18 you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven." 00:22:28.21\00:22:30.28 So he gave us an example of what to expect through baptism. 00:22:30.31\00:22:34.48 The heavens are open, the voice of the Father says, 00:22:34.52\00:22:36.89 "You're My son." 00:22:36.92\00:22:38.22 We are adopted. 00:22:38.25\00:22:39.55 There's a lot of parallels there. 00:22:39.59\00:22:40.92 Jëan: And we do have a book. 00:22:40.96\00:22:42.26 It's called "Baptism: Is It Really Necessary?" 00:22:42.29\00:22:44.23 It'll give you a lot more of the Bible verses there. 00:22:44.26\00:22:46.19 The number to call is 800-835-6747 and ask for the 00:22:46.23\00:22:50.50 book "Baptism: Is It Really Necessary?" 00:22:50.53\00:22:52.90 You can also dial #250 and you'll be able to get it that 00:22:52.93\00:22:56.27 way as well. 00:22:56.30\00:22:57.64 We got Marc in Oregon. 00:22:57.67\00:22:58.97 Marc, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:22:59.01\00:23:02.11 Marc: Well, hello there. 00:23:02.14\00:23:03.48 This is my first time. 00:23:03.51\00:23:04.81 Doug: Well, thank you for calling. 00:23:04.85\00:23:06.95 Welcome. 00:23:06.98\00:23:08.32 Marc: Yes, I'll make it simple. I had a question. 00:23:08.35\00:23:12.62 I've been doing some re-evaluing of my life and doing some 00:23:12.65\00:23:15.76 studying and I come across, King James Version, St. John 14, 00:23:15.79\00:23:22.93 verse 20. 00:23:22.96\00:23:25.07 And if you could explain that a little bit because I read it and 00:23:25.10\00:23:31.87 it sounds a little different to me, but I was wondering what 00:23:31.91\00:23:35.64 you thought. 00:23:35.68\00:23:36.98 Doug: Yeah, well, let me read it for our friends, and right now 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.85 I'm looking at the New King James. 00:23:39.88\00:23:41.18 They're very similar. 00:23:41.22\00:23:42.52 "At that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in 00:23:42.55\00:23:45.59 me, and I in you." 00:23:45.62\00:23:47.36 And what is Jesus saying? 00:23:47.39\00:23:49.79 Well, all through the New Testament you'll notice that 00:23:49.82\00:23:52.16 Paul frequently says that we are in Christ. 00:23:52.19\00:23:55.60 That means that our lives are resting in faith in Christ, that 00:23:55.63\00:23:59.37 we are abiding in Christ. 00:23:59.40\00:24:01.44 I think Paul uses the phrase in Christ more than anyone else. 00:24:01.47\00:24:05.27 And so when it says that Christ is in the Father, it means that 00:24:05.31\00:24:08.74 they're one, they're united, they're together. 00:24:08.78\00:24:11.71 And he wants us to be one in him; that we're melded together, 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.98 that we are united. 00:24:16.02\00:24:17.52 And it's like an intimate term. 00:24:17.55\00:24:20.39 And so Jesus said, "If you've seen me, you've seen my Father. 00:24:20.42\00:24:25.23 The Father is in me, and I'm in Him." 00:24:25.26\00:24:27.40 It's hard for us to kind of comprehend that; but he 00:24:27.40\00:24:31.37 represents the Father, and Father represents him, and when 00:24:31.40\00:24:34.27 we become Christians we represent Christ. 00:24:34.30\00:24:37.07 Jëan: All right, maybe time for one more caller before 00:24:37.11\00:24:39.61 the break. 00:24:39.64\00:24:40.98 We got Susie in California. 00:24:41.01\00:24:42.31 Hi, Susie. 00:24:42.34\00:24:43.68 We got just a few more seconds. 00:24:43.71\00:24:45.01 And your question. 00:24:45.05\00:24:46.38 Susie: Yeah, yeah. 00:24:46.41\00:24:47.72 Good evening, pastor. 00:24:47.75\00:24:49.08 Yeah, my question is, is it sin to cook on Sabbath day? 00:24:49.12\00:24:52.25 Does it consider labor? 00:24:52.29\00:24:54.06 Doug: Is it a sin to cook on Sabbath? 00:24:54.09\00:24:55.79 Well, you should probably get all of your baking and boiling 00:24:55.82\00:24:59.69 done, according to what the Bible says in Moses' writings. 00:24:59.73\00:25:03.03 Get as much done as you reasonably can. 00:25:03.06\00:25:05.33 You got to make a salad or something. 00:25:05.37\00:25:06.70 It's more practical to do that day to keep things fresh. 00:25:06.74\00:25:09.27 But get as much out of the way as you can. 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.57 Hey, we've got to take a break. 00:25:11.61\00:25:12.94 We'll be right back. 00:25:12.97\00:25:14.38 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:25:17.15\00:25:18.45 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:25:18.48\00:25:20.92 announcer: Amazing Facts: Changed Lives. 00:25:28.16\00:25:36.00 Darrell: I grew up in a neighborhood in Northwest, D.C., 00:25:36.03\00:25:38.30 a neighborhood called Petworth. 00:25:38.33\00:25:39.67 I went to a private school, and I didn't fit in well at school 00:25:39.70\00:25:42.24 because I was from an inner city neighborhood. 00:25:42.27\00:25:44.04 I didn't feel well at home because I went to 00:25:44.07\00:25:45.64 a private school. 00:25:45.67\00:25:46.98 I've always been a people-pleaser, so I would do 00:25:47.01\00:25:49.48 what they did. 00:25:49.51\00:25:50.85 And if they started drinking, I started drinking. 00:25:50.88\00:25:52.85 They started smoking marijuana, I smoked marijuana. 00:25:52.88\00:25:55.52 Once I became aware of girls and what male-female relationships 00:25:55.55\00:26:00.92 were all about, I was off to the races with these guys. 00:26:00.96\00:26:03.39 So we started partying every weekend, and we stay out till 00:26:03.43\00:26:06.29 all hours of the evening. 00:26:06.33\00:26:07.60 My homework didn't get done. 00:26:07.66\00:26:08.96 My grades suffered because of it. 00:26:09.00\00:26:10.67 And as soon as I went to college at Ca--at a Catholic university 00:26:10.70\00:26:14.17 here I started smoking hashish, and back in those days you could 00:26:14.20\00:26:18.84 smoke in class. 00:26:18.87\00:26:20.18 I loved the way it made me feel. 00:26:20.21\00:26:22.38 I didn't have to worry about--I fit in. 00:26:22.41\00:26:24.71 I was fun. 00:26:24.75\00:26:26.41 People liked being with me. 00:26:26.45\00:26:28.42 I was--kind of the life of the party. 00:26:28.45\00:26:29.98 I came out of my shell. 00:26:30.02\00:26:31.35 And shortly thereafter in my mid-20s, I was working at one of 00:26:31.39\00:26:34.76 the biggest computer companies--after graduating 00:26:34.79\00:26:37.26 college, one of the biggest computer companies on the planet 00:26:37.29\00:26:39.59 at the time. 00:26:39.63\00:26:40.93 And I had money, I had women, I had, you know, a car every 00:26:40.96\00:26:45.53 2 years. 00:26:45.57\00:26:46.87 My job performance started to suffer. 00:26:46.90\00:26:49.87 Nothing else was the same in my life. 00:26:49.90\00:26:52.01 I started missing work. 00:26:52.04\00:26:53.74 I would get hired, maybe even be promoted. 00:26:53.78\00:26:56.85 I did really well 3, 4 months in, 5 months in. 00:26:56.88\00:27:00.95 You know, say 4 to 6 months I would lose the job. 00:27:00.98\00:27:03.62 I've for--gotten more jobs than I can remember. 00:27:03.65\00:27:06.35 I needed to smoke on a daily basis all day every day and that 00:27:06.39\00:27:11.16 cost money. 00:27:11.19\00:27:12.49 So then I started getting into stealing. 00:27:12.53\00:27:16.13 I'm stealing from family and friends. 00:27:16.16\00:27:17.67 And when that ran out and people would stop--were not trusting me 00:27:17.70\00:27:21.17 anymore, I started to rob people. 00:27:21.20\00:27:25.34 My family didn't want anything to do with me. 00:27:25.37\00:27:26.98 My friends didn't want anything to do with me. 00:27:27.01\00:27:28.41 People--when I called people, they didn't answer the phone. 00:27:28.44\00:27:30.58 When I knocked on the door, they didn't answer the door. 00:27:30.61\00:27:32.45 I was purcha--I purchased a house and--a young lady and I 00:27:32.48\00:27:35.05 purchased it together and we were going to move in together 00:27:35.08\00:27:37.59 and that fell by the wayside because I started smoking and I 00:27:37.62\00:27:41.19 started just taking things from the house and selling them. 00:27:41.22\00:27:44.39 I started taking her personal items and selling them. 00:27:44.43\00:27:46.36 I started stealing from her purse. 00:27:46.39\00:27:49.43 I started stealing from stores. 00:27:49.46\00:27:53.20 I mean, pizza delivery guys were like an ATM. 00:27:53.23\00:27:55.90 Nothing mattered. 00:27:55.94\00:27:57.27 I've been homeless about four or five times in my life and each 00:27:57.31\00:28:01.51 time was drug-related. 00:28:01.54\00:28:03.04 Each time I chose to do drugs rather than to live with this 00:28:03.08\00:28:08.05 person that--whoever it was I was dating. 00:28:08.08\00:28:10.89 During all this time, my sister and her family, they would 00:28:10.92\00:28:14.59 engage me, they would take me to church. 00:28:14.62\00:28:16.59 I met this woman who happened to be going to my church and I 00:28:16.62\00:28:19.16 didn't even know, and she was taking Bible studies from her 00:28:19.19\00:28:22.60 brother-in-law and her sister who were church leaders. 00:28:22.63\00:28:25.77 They heard about a seminar by Doug Batchelor in Amazing Facts 00:28:25.80\00:28:29.10 called "The Prophecy Code." 00:28:29.14\00:28:30.51 I learned about this--the true meaning of the Sabbath. 00:28:30.54\00:28:33.31 I learned about my health issues and the die--and what--how diet 00:28:33.34\00:28:36.95 and exercise can positively affect my health and my 00:28:36.98\00:28:41.15 li--my well-being. 00:28:41.18\00:28:42.52 I learned about forgiveness from God. 00:28:42.55\00:28:46.09 For me, I took to Pastor Doug right away because of the way he 00:28:46.12\00:28:50.36 spoke, his cadence, his--the way he talked was so--it was 00:28:50.39\00:28:55.26 just like he was talking to me. 00:28:55.30\00:28:56.80 He gave out the--his book "The Richest Caveman." 00:28:56.83\00:29:00.54 And when I read that book, I was astonished at all the things he 00:29:00.57\00:29:04.71 had been through. 00:29:04.74\00:29:06.14 His story was not exactly like mine, but it was a lot 00:29:06.17\00:29:09.71 like mine. 00:29:09.74\00:29:11.05 So I just identified with him right from the start. 00:29:11.08\00:29:12.71 I thank God that I went to that "Prophecy Code" seminar because 00:29:12.75\00:29:17.05 it was my introduction to the truth. 00:29:17.09\00:29:20.32 And I even go to YouTube and catch the--some of the 00:29:20.36\00:29:24.03 seminars--other seminars that they've had, you know, over the 00:29:24.06\00:29:27.00 years, and I do it because I still feel a connection. 00:29:27.03\00:29:30.23 It's like my roots, it's like my foundation was built on 00:29:30.27\00:29:33.07 Amazing Facts. 00:29:33.10\00:29:34.44 And I like the free offers they give. 00:29:34.47\00:29:35.87 I can imagine the call taker on 00:29:35.90\00:29:37.71 the other end when I call the 00:29:37.74\00:29:39.71 800 number, "Hi, girl. 00:29:39.74\00:29:41.21 How are you?" 00:29:41.24\00:29:42.58 "What--which free gift would you like today?" 00:29:42.61\00:29:43.98 I can't imagine life without getting those free offers 00:29:44.01\00:29:46.75 because those books are just so well-written. 00:29:46.78\00:29:48.68 It's like they're written for me. 00:29:48.72\00:29:50.39 I do really appreciate Amazing Facts and Pastor Doug Batchelor 00:29:50.42\00:29:52.75 because they brought--they helped bring me to where 00:29:52.79\00:29:55.09 I am today. 00:29:55.12\00:29:56.46 My name is Darrell. 00:29:56.49\00:29:57.93 You 00:31:19.77\00:31:24.45 My name is Doug Batchelor. 00:31:24.48\00:31:25.78 Jëan: My name is Jëan Ross, and we have Deeann listening 00:31:25.81\00:31:28.05 in Washington. 00:31:28.08\00:31:29.38 Deeann, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:31:29.42\00:31:31.42 Deeann: Thank you. 00:31:31.45\00:31:32.75 Can you hear me? 00:31:32.79\00:31:34.12 Doug: Yeah. 00:31:34.16\00:31:35.46 Deeann: Okay, thank you so much for taking my call. 00:31:35.49\00:31:38.16 So I was recently made aware in the past couple of days that 00:31:38.19\00:31:41.06 there was one of the states here in the United States--I don't 00:31:41.10\00:31:44.57 know if I'm supposed to mention it, but-- 00:31:44.60\00:31:46.57 Doug: Oh, that's fine. Yeah, North Dakota. 00:31:46.60\00:31:49.57 There's nothing wrong with--we tell people to avoid mentioning 00:31:49.60\00:31:51.94 denominations, but yeah, we--but yeah, we like to keep the 00:31:51.97\00:31:55.98 questions focused on the Bible. 00:31:56.01\00:31:57.31 You can mention a state. That's fine. 00:31:57.35\00:32:00.08 Deeann: Okay, anyway, so I heard that it just barely failed, that 00:32:00.12\00:32:04.09 they were trying to push through a Sunday law. 00:32:04.12\00:32:07.66 And so that got me thinking, why are they doing that? 00:32:07.69\00:32:11.69 Because everything that I've ever read in the Bible--I mean, 00:32:11.73\00:32:14.73 I got out my concordance and I was looking up, you know, trying 00:32:14.73\00:32:18.40 to find support for Sunday and, I mean, everything I find is 00:32:18.43\00:32:23.61 that--it says that Saturday or, you know, that the Sabbath, 00:32:23.64\00:32:27.48 Saturday, is the Lord's Day, not Sunday. 00:32:27.51\00:32:30.05 So I guess my question is, am I missing something, or why would 00:32:30.08\00:32:33.21 they be pushing through a Sunday law when it's not biblical? 00:32:33.25\00:32:37.45 Doug: Yeah, well, the--you know, the founding fathers of our 00:32:37.49\00:32:41.92 country, going all the way back to Plymouth and Jamestown, they 00:32:41.96\00:32:45.79 had laws about--they believed that Sunday was the Sabbath so 00:32:45.83\00:32:48.30 they said, you know, "We're going to enforce keeping of the 00:32:48.33\00:32:51.03 fourth commandment." 00:32:51.07\00:32:52.40 They had the day wrong, but they had the concept right. 00:32:52.43\00:32:54.10 But you're not supposed to force it. 00:32:54.14\00:32:55.80 Roger Williams was the one who said, you know, you shouldn't be 00:32:55.84\00:32:59.01 putting people in the stocks, in the street or punishing people 00:32:59.04\00:33:03.11 because they do not keep one of the first four commandments. 00:33:03.14\00:33:06.11 We should have freedom of religion. 00:33:06.15\00:33:08.45 If a person is being forced to keep the Sabbath--Sabbath is 00:33:08.48\00:33:11.95 a spiritual thing. 00:33:11.99\00:33:13.29 You can't force a person to love God. 00:33:13.32\00:33:15.22 You can't force worship. 00:33:15.26\00:33:16.56 And so the first four commandments are really between 00:33:16.59\00:33:18.69 each individual. 00:33:18.73\00:33:20.06 The last six commandments the civil government should enforce: 00:33:20.10\00:33:24.20 respect for marriage, property, life, so forth. 00:33:24.23\00:33:26.70 Yeah, so in the early days of the country, in order to give 00:33:26.74\00:33:30.87 people time off, a number of governments they had all 00:33:30.91\00:33:34.08 these blue laws. 00:33:34.11\00:33:35.41 I guess they were originally written on blue paper so they 00:33:35.44\00:33:37.15 called them blue laws, and they were laws about what you could 00:33:37.18\00:33:40.38 and couldn't do on Sunday so that people would not be 00:33:40.42\00:33:42.85 distracted from worship. 00:33:42.88\00:33:45.19 And most of the states had blue laws. 00:33:45.22\00:33:48.56 A number of states have repealed them. 00:33:48.59\00:33:50.19 Some states still have them. 00:33:50.23\00:33:51.56 Some things are open and aren't open on Sunday. 00:33:51.59\00:33:54.96 So I heard North Dakota their arguments for why to do it was 00:33:55.00\00:33:58.63 they said, "Well, we need to make sure there's a day when 00:33:58.67\00:34:00.60 people aren't forced to work 7 days a week, fam--for family 00:34:00.64\00:34:03.84 time, and, you know, we shouldn't be focusing on 00:34:03.87\00:34:07.14 merchandizing all week long." 00:34:07.18\00:34:09.28 And so they were trying to bring about some of the moral 00:34:09.31\00:34:13.15 arguments for why it would be good to have a Sunday law. 00:34:13.18\00:34:17.82 And I heard during COVID a lot of people were saying the 00:34:17.85\00:34:21.02 environment's recovering. 00:34:21.06\00:34:22.66 There's environmental reasons for taking one day off. 00:34:22.69\00:34:25.06 And don't drive your car and let--you know, let the 00:34:25.09\00:34:27.60 environment rest. 00:34:27.66\00:34:29.06 So that's the logic behind it. 00:34:29.10\00:34:30.87 Of course, I don't agree with it, but--anyway, anything to add 00:34:30.90\00:34:34.10 to that? 00:34:34.14\00:34:35.40 Jëan: Well, you know, we do have a book, one of our study guides. 00:34:35.44\00:34:37.31 It's called "Written in Stone," and it's all about the Ten 00:34:37.34\00:34:40.31 Commandments and kind of highlights, as you mentioned, 00:34:40.34\00:34:42.94 the first four versus the last six and what responsibility the 00:34:42.98\00:34:46.92 government has in enforcing the Ten Commandments or what portion 00:34:46.95\00:34:50.79 of the Ten Commandments. 00:34:50.82\00:34:52.35 So a great study. 00:34:52.39\00:34:53.99 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:34:54.02\00:34:55.99 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:34:56.02\00:34:59.13 You can ask for the study guide. 00:34:59.16\00:35:00.56 It's called "Written in Stone." 00:35:00.60\00:35:02.50 And dial #250 on your smartphone. 00:35:02.53\00:35:05.50 You can just ask for it by name. 00:35:05.53\00:35:07.17 We'll be happy to send it to you. 00:35:07.20\00:35:08.84 Kayla in Texas. 00:35:08.87\00:35:10.17 Kayla, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:35:10.21\00:35:12.81 Kayla: Good evening to you both. 00:35:12.84\00:35:14.18 I appreciate your program, and I actually have my children 00:35:14.21\00:35:16.61 watching the program right now. 00:35:16.64\00:35:17.95 So praise God. 00:35:17.98\00:35:20.15 Yeah, it's--for a Christian who rededicates their life to the 00:35:20.18\00:35:23.79 Lord, what promises from the Word can assure us that we are 00:35:23.82\00:35:28.36 accepted back into the fold, that it's not too late for us? 00:35:28.39\00:35:32.26 Doug: Well, you have some stories for one thing. 00:35:32.29\00:35:33.80 You've got the parable of the prodigal son; that, you know, he 00:35:33.83\00:35:37.67 spent evidently years squandering his father's 00:35:37.70\00:35:40.57 inheritance but he finally came to his senses, came home, and he 00:35:40.60\00:35:44.07 was warmly welcomed back. 00:35:44.11\00:35:46.11 You've got Peter who denied the Lord, and first thing Jesus said 00:35:46.14\00:35:51.41 when he rose from the dead he told Mary, "Go tell the 00:35:51.45\00:35:53.42 disciples and Peter." 00:35:53.45\00:35:55.98 And Peter, you know, he went out and wept bitterly. 00:35:56.02\00:35:57.89 He repented of denying the Lord. 00:35:57.92\00:36:00.79 And then you got the story of David who wandered from the Lord 00:36:00.82\00:36:04.29 in a big way, drifting into not only conspiring, really 00:36:04.33\00:36:08.33 murdering a friend through enemy soldiers but then stealing his 00:36:08.36\00:36:12.37 wife and trying to do a cover up; and he repents, and you read 00:36:12.40\00:36:16.40 that in Psalm 32 and 51. 00:36:16.44\00:36:18.91 You've got a lot of examples, and I'm sure there are also 00:36:18.94\00:36:21.01 verses that talk about--yeah, you got in Eze--where is it in 00:36:21.04\00:36:24.25 Ezekiel, Pastor Ross? 00:36:24.28\00:36:25.58 If a wicked man turns from his sins and does what the righteous 00:36:25.61\00:36:28.65 man does, all his wickedness will be forgiven; and if 00:36:28.68\00:36:31.59 a righteous man turns from his good works and does what the 00:36:31.62\00:36:34.56 wicked man does, his righteousness is forgiven. 00:36:34.59\00:36:37.66 So the Lord is pretty clear that He welcomes us back. 00:36:37.69\00:36:40.66 Jëan: You know, I was also thinking Exodu--Ezekiel chapter 00:36:40.70\00:36:43.26 18, verse 21. 00:36:43.30\00:36:45.43 Twenty-one to twenty-three is the verse you were referring to. 00:36:45.47\00:36:47.50 But another Bible story, you got the story of Mary Magdalene. 00:36:47.54\00:36:49.94 The Bible says Jesus cast seven devils out of her, and it's 00:36:49.97\00:36:54.34 possible that that didn't all happen at the same time. 00:36:54.38\00:36:56.91 In other words, she might have slipped back. 00:36:56.95\00:36:59.08 So there is redemption and people can be converted and come 00:36:59.11\00:37:03.28 back to the Lord absolutely. 00:37:03.32\00:37:04.85 Doug: Yeah, and like the Pharisee said, "Lord, have mercy 00:37:04.89\00:37:08.39 on me a sinner." 00:37:08.42\00:37:09.76 The thief on the cross when Jesus died. 00:37:09.79\00:37:11.09 The Bible is full of stories of God's patience 00:37:11.13\00:37:13.33 and redempten--redemption. 00:37:13.36\00:37:15.53 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Ely in Kansas. 00:37:15.56\00:37:18.80 Ely, welcome to the program. 00:37:18.83\00:37:20.50 Ely: Hey, good evening, guys. God bless you all. 00:37:20.54\00:37:24.97 My question for tonight is, is the Holy Spirit God? 00:37:25.01\00:37:30.21 Because I don't really understand that. 00:37:30.25\00:37:32.65 Can you be, like, very specific? 00:37:32.68\00:37:35.78 Doug: Yeah, we'll do our best. 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.52 You know, you could probably launch into a 30-minute study 00:37:37.55\00:37:41.36 right now on that, and we don't--won't have time for that. 00:37:41.39\00:37:43.86 But what are the characteristics of God? 00:37:43.89\00:37:48.06 Well, we know the Holy Spirit is omnipresent, which God is. 00:37:48.10\00:37:51.60 He's all-knowing, and He's omniscient. 00:37:51.63\00:37:55.94 He's omnipotent. 00:37:55.97\00:37:58.34 And Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit not as an it 00:37:58.37\00:38:01.04 but as a He. 00:38:01.08\00:38:02.54 "When he, the Spirit of truth, has come--" It says that the 00:38:02.58\00:38:05.68 Holy Spirit anointed Jesus, and you read that you can grieve the 00:38:05.71\00:38:12.79 Holy Spirit. 00:38:12.82\00:38:14.12 You don't grieve an it or a power source. 00:38:14.16\00:38:16.49 And so you look at what the characteristics of personality 00:38:16.52\00:38:20.06 are and the Holy Spirit has those characteristics. 00:38:20.10\00:38:23.20 He leads us. 00:38:23.23\00:38:24.53 He's a comforter. 00:38:24.57\00:38:25.90 He comforts us. 00:38:25.93\00:38:27.24 He can be grieved. 00:38:27.27\00:38:28.60 And indeed Jesus said all manner of sin and blasphemy will 00:38:28.64\00:38:32.01 be forgiven. 00:38:32.04\00:38:33.34 We can sin against God the Father and the Son. 00:38:33.38\00:38:36.34 But said don't blaspheme the Holy Spirit. 00:38:36.38\00:38:38.98 Christ identified the Spirit as separate. 00:38:39.01\00:38:41.58 And then Jesus when he--the Great Commission, he says 00:38:41.62\00:38:43.85 baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, 00:38:43.89\00:38:47.86 the Holy Spirit. 00:38:47.89\00:38:49.22 You see the Spirit there in creation in Genesis, the Spirit 00:38:49.26\00:38:52.73 moved upon the face of the waters; and the last verses in 00:38:52.76\00:38:55.83 the Bible, the Spirit and the bride say come. 00:38:55.86\00:38:58.23 So from cover to cover in the Bible you've got God the Spirit 00:38:58.27\00:39:01.37 is evident. 00:39:01.40\00:39:03.07 Jëan: We do have a book. 00:39:03.10\00:39:04.41 It's called "The Trinity," and it explains the subject, 00:39:04.44\00:39:07.34 give some-- 00:39:07.38\00:39:08.68 Doug: "One God or Three." Yeah. 00:39:08.71\00:39:10.05 Jëan: Yap. Some great Bible facts there. 00:39:10.08\00:39:12.41 So call and ask for it. 00:39:12.45\00:39:14.08 It's called "One God or Three: The Trinity." 00:39:14.12\00:39:15.45 The number to call is 800-835-6747 or you can dial 00:39:15.48\00:39:19.45 #250 on your smartphone. 00:39:19.49\00:39:21.86 Thank you for your call, Ely. 00:39:21.89\00:39:23.32 Next caller that we have is Felix in Florida. 00:39:23.36\00:39:25.69 Felix, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:39:25.73\00:39:27.86 Felix: Thank you. Thank you. 00:39:27.93\00:39:30.57 It's an honor, a great honor. 00:39:30.60\00:39:32.53 The question is, is the--what's the dynamic between the soul and 00:39:32.57\00:39:39.84 the spirit? 00:39:39.87\00:39:41.18 Are they one and the same or are they two distinct entities? 00:39:41.21\00:39:46.08 Because I understand that even the animals have the same breath 00:39:46.11\00:39:50.29 and the same soul. 00:39:50.32\00:39:52.75 So I suppose the question is the difference between the soul and 00:39:52.79\00:39:56.93 the spirit. 00:39:56.96\00:39:58.56 So are they interchangeable? 00:39:58.59\00:40:00.96 Doug: Yeah. 00:40:01.00\00:40:02.30 Well, a good question. 00:40:02.33\00:40:03.67 It is a--it's a deep question. 00:40:03.70\00:40:05.00 You know, sometimes one word can be used a couple of different 00:40:05.03\00:40:08.60 ways in the Bible. 00:40:08.64\00:40:10.31 Sometimes in the Bible when it says sons of God, talking 00:40:10.34\00:40:13.31 about angels. 00:40:13.34\00:40:14.68 Sometimes it says sons of God and it's talking about 00:40:14.71\00:40:17.15 believers, and you have to look at the context. 00:40:17.18\00:40:21.08 Sometimes in the Bible an angel means an angel, a cherub 00:40:21.12\00:40:23.92 or a seraphim. 00:40:23.95\00:40:25.25 But then somebody called King David an angel. 00:40:25.29\00:40:27.79 Well, he's not a seraphim or a cherubim. 00:40:27.82\00:40:30.23 The word spirit in the Bible in Greek it's the word pneuma, 00:40:30.26\00:40:35.40 which means wind; and that's often talking about the breath 00:40:35.43\00:40:38.93 or the wind of God, the breath of life, which that breath of 00:40:38.97\00:40:42.07 life is in an animal and in humans. 00:40:42.10\00:40:45.37 Doesn't mean it's conscious, it's just the power of life. 00:40:45.41\00:40:48.74 And it says God breathed into Adam, he became a living soul 00:40:48.78\00:40:52.88 there in Genesis. 00:40:52.91\00:40:54.32 So when God's breath of life entered into Adam, he became 00:40:54.35\00:40:58.72 a living soul. 00:40:58.75\00:41:00.19 When you take the breath away and the ashes to ashes, the body 00:41:00.22\00:41:04.69 turns back to dust, you don't have a living soul. 00:41:04.73\00:41:08.23 You know, it's kind of like a person said if you get some 00:41:08.26\00:41:11.70 nails and you get some boards and you put them together you 00:41:11.73\00:41:13.90 can make a box. 00:41:13.94\00:41:15.27 It doesn't become a box until you assemble it a certain way. 00:41:15.30\00:41:18.74 Then if you disassemble, you pull out the nails and you set 00:41:18.77\00:41:21.31 the boards in one pile and the nails in another and you say, 00:41:21.34\00:41:24.25 "Okay, where's the box?" 00:41:24.28\00:41:25.58 Well, it stops being a box when you have the two together. 00:41:25.61\00:41:29.18 So the combination of the breath of life and the body makes 00:41:29.22\00:41:34.79 a soul. 00:41:34.82\00:41:36.12 So animals have that. 00:41:36.16\00:41:37.63 The spirit, meaning the consciousness, the 00:41:37.66\00:41:40.20 self-awareness of man, the word is sometimes used that way when 00:41:40.23\00:41:43.13 Paul talks about body, soul, and spirit. 00:41:43.16\00:41:46.00 And he's really using it the way the Greeks might sometimes use 00:41:46.03\00:41:49.07 the word spirit. 00:41:49.10\00:41:50.64 But I don't know if that helps or confuses things. 00:41:50.67\00:41:53.27 Animals do have the breath of life, of course. 00:41:53.31\00:41:55.88 Jëan: We do have a study guide. 00:41:55.91\00:41:57.21 It's called "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:41:57.25\00:41:58.81 And it talks about the spirit and the soul and gives you a lot 00:41:58.85\00:42:01.35 more Bible verses. 00:42:01.38\00:42:02.82 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and ask. 00:42:02.85\00:42:04.99 The number, again, is 800-835-6747. 00:42:05.02\00:42:08.79 And dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the study guide "Are 00:42:08.82\00:42:13.13 the Dead Really Dead?" 00:42:13.16\00:42:14.63 Thank you, Felix. 00:42:14.66\00:42:15.96 We've got Melinda in California. 00:42:16.00\00:42:17.33 Melinda, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:42:17.37\00:42:19.10 Melinda: Hi. Good evening. 00:42:19.13\00:42:21.64 This is Melinda from Southern California. 00:42:21.67\00:42:23.97 I have a question, Pastor Doug. 00:42:24.01\00:42:26.64 Does it says in the Bible that we can't sue a person? 00:42:26.68\00:42:30.65 Doug: No, it doesn't say you're not allowed to sue. 00:42:30.68\00:42:35.35 Paul in 1 Corinthians, I think, is it, Pastor Ross, at chapter 7 00:42:35.38\00:42:39.35 where he said believers go to court with believers and that 00:42:39.39\00:42:43.73 before the unbelievers, and this is to your shame. 00:42:43.76\00:42:47.56 Christians should, as far as possible, not sue. 00:42:47.60\00:42:50.70 In fact, you know, Christ said if someone sues you to take your 00:42:50.73\00:42:53.70 shirt, give them your cloak. 00:42:53.74\00:42:55.44 That doesn't mean there aren't times when--you know, you've got 00:42:55.47\00:42:57.97 a house and you've got it insured and fire burns up the 00:42:58.01\00:43:00.88 house and the insurance company doesn't want to pay, there's 00:43:00.91\00:43:03.65 nothing immoral with your going into court and saying, "Look, 00:43:03.68\00:43:06.41 you need to fulfill the contract and replace our house." 00:43:06.45\00:43:09.62 So if it comes to that, you need to do something like that. 00:43:09.65\00:43:12.49 If you take my shirt, I'm probably not going to sue you to 00:43:12.52\00:43:16.96 get my shirt back. 00:43:16.99\00:43:18.33 Jesus says just let them have your shirt, you know. 00:43:18.36\00:43:21.16 So it--it's--they're different circumstances. 00:43:21.20\00:43:23.80 Jëan: And the verse you're referring to is 1 Corinthians 00:43:23.83\00:43:25.13 chapter 6. 00:43:25.17\00:43:26.53 It's actually from verse 1 through to verse 7. 00:43:26.57\00:43:29.04 And, again, as you mentioned, it's really the context. 00:43:29.07\00:43:30.71 He's talking about believers. 00:43:30.74\00:43:32.07 These are supposed to be brothers and sisters in Christ 00:43:32.11\00:43:34.28 in a church and yet they taking each other to court, and Paul 00:43:34.31\00:43:37.85 says, "Well, if there's a disagreement, you know, speak to 00:43:37.88\00:43:40.22 the pastor, speak to the elder. 00:43:40.25\00:43:41.72 Can't you resolve it without having to go to court?" 00:43:41.75\00:43:44.52 So that counsel is, of course, very valid, and that's different 00:43:44.55\00:43:47.22 in what you said, Pastor Doug, when it comes to business or it 00:43:47.26\00:43:50.43 comes to somebody not fulfilling their contract. 00:43:50.46\00:43:53.63 Yeah, there's nothing wrong in going to court in that case. 00:43:53.66\00:43:57.03 However, you have--we live in a sort of sue-hungry society today 00:43:57.07\00:44:01.90 where it seems like everyone's trying to make money and there 00:44:01.94\00:44:04.84 is a lot of fraud and a lot of greed and a lot of suing 00:44:04.87\00:44:08.31 happening, and I think as Christians we need to, you know, 00:44:08.34\00:44:12.45 be faithful. 00:44:12.48\00:44:13.92 Doug: Yeah, you know, a lot of lawyers--don't want to disparage 00:44:13.95\00:44:17.45 all the lawyers, but a lot of lawyers they get these 00:44:17.49\00:44:19.55 deep-pocket settlements and they--people are inspired 00:44:19.59\00:44:23.16 to sue. 00:44:23.19\00:44:24.53 They say, "Well, you know, that person got $3 million for," 00:44:24.56\00:44:26.56 whatever it was. 00:44:26.59\00:44:28.10 And usually it's something incidental, and a third of that 00:44:28.13\00:44:31.20 goes to their lawyers and so it's created this cycle of 00:44:31.23\00:44:34.44 people becoming very litigious in our society looking for 00:44:34.47\00:44:37.71 deep-pocket lawsuits. 00:44:37.74\00:44:39.61 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Ron in 00:44:39.64\00:44:41.38 New Mexico. 00:44:41.41\00:44:42.71 Ron, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:44:42.74\00:44:44.05 Ron: Well, thank you. Thank you, pastors. 00:44:44.08\00:44:47.95 I'm a Bible-believing Christian. 00:44:47.98\00:44:49.48 The Bible is God's owner's manual. 00:44:49.52\00:44:51.92 It's the only true and trustworthy standard for living. 00:44:51.95\00:44:55.86 It is not infallible, and I often run into others that say, 00:44:55.89\00:45:00.23 "Oh, the Bible is infallible." 00:45:00.26\00:45:01.76 Well, was there one demoniac or was there two? 00:45:01.80\00:45:05.17 Did Paul see something but he didn't hear anything, or did he 00:45:05.20\00:45:08.07 hear something but he didn't see something? 00:45:08.10\00:45:09.74 It depends on which chapter of Acts you're reading. 00:45:09.77\00:45:14.11 So how do we respond to people who say the Bible is infallible 00:45:14.14\00:45:17.31 when there are human errors that God permitted to be in it? 00:45:17.35\00:45:21.25 Doug: Well, I believe the Bible is God's perfect Word of God. 00:45:21.28\00:45:24.29 The two examples that you gave there when it says in Mark and 00:45:24.32\00:45:30.59 Luke that there was one demoniac and then you read in Matthew and 00:45:30.63\00:45:35.00 he says there were two, I don't think that's a contradiction. 00:45:35.03\00:45:38.43 I think what's happening there is you're actually--you're 00:45:38.47\00:45:40.90 getting the truth in that there was probably one that was more 00:45:40.94\00:45:44.41 notable and outspoken, the other one was lingering more in 00:45:44.44\00:45:47.34 the background. 00:45:47.38\00:45:48.61 Matthew included him, but Luke and Mark really focused on the 00:45:48.64\00:45:52.11 one man that the devil was speaking through. 00:45:52.15\00:45:54.45 So I think you can reconcile stories like that. 00:45:54.48\00:45:56.62 And even the story where Paul talks about his conversion, he 00:45:56.65\00:46:00.96 said the people there they heard a voice and other place it says 00:46:00.99\00:46:03.96 they saw a light. 00:46:03.99\00:46:05.33 And I think as he's telling that story, he's talking about, well, 00:46:05.36\00:46:09.33 you know, maybe they heard a noise but some didn't know what 00:46:09.36\00:46:11.30 the voice said and they knew that Paul had this 00:46:11.33\00:46:15.24 dramatic vision. 00:46:15.27\00:46:16.97 I don't see those as conflicts. 00:46:17.01\00:46:19.47 Now, having said that, there are places, there are difficult 00:46:19.51\00:46:22.48 spots, and I'll admit that, in the Bible where, you know, 00:46:22.51\00:46:25.28 there'll be one place where it says that a king was 4 years old 00:46:25.31\00:46:27.78 when something happened and then later it says he was 40. 00:46:27.82\00:46:31.45 You will have in translations where people found a manuscript 00:46:31.49\00:46:35.39 and they couldn't read what the old manuscript said and they 00:46:35.42\00:46:38.43 didn't know was that a zero or was it a one, and the--just 00:46:38.46\00:46:41.96 there's little things like that. 00:46:42.00\00:46:43.40 But in my experience, rather than highlight those things you 00:46:43.43\00:46:48.77 are far better off believing too much of the Bible than 00:46:48.80\00:46:52.14 questioning the Bible and starting to say, "I'm going to 00:46:52.17\00:46:54.84 pick and choose what parts I believe are accurate." 00:46:54.88\00:46:57.55 And so in that sense I think the Bible must be looked upon as the 00:46:57.58\00:47:00.88 unfailing Word of God. 00:47:00.92\00:47:03.12 Jëan: You know, we do have a book, Pastor Doug. 00:47:03.15\00:47:04.49 It's called "The Ultimate Resource" and it's about 00:47:04.52\00:47:06.72 the Bible. 00:47:06.76\00:47:08.09 Talks about where the Bible came from and translations 00:47:08.12\00:47:11.06 and manuscripts. 00:47:11.09\00:47:12.39 Just a lot of good information. 00:47:12.43\00:47:13.76 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:47:13.80\00:47:15.70 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:47:15.73\00:47:19.07 You can dial #250. 00:47:19.10\00:47:20.40 It's called "The Ultimate Resource" and it's all about 00:47:20.44\00:47:23.54 the Bible. 00:47:23.57\00:47:24.87 All right, thank you, Ron. 00:47:24.91\00:47:26.24 We've got Mark in Kentucky. 00:47:26.27\00:47:27.58 Mark, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:47:27.61\00:47:29.24 Mark: Yes. 00:47:29.28\00:47:31.25 Can you hear me? 00:47:31.28\00:47:32.58 Doug: We can. 00:47:32.61\00:47:33.95 Mark: Yeah, I was wondering, is it wrong to go to church 00:47:33.98\00:47:37.42 on Sunday? 00:47:37.45\00:47:38.82 Because the late great Billy Graham always said--after his 00:47:38.85\00:47:44.66 preaching he'd say, "Get into a good church on Sunday." 00:47:44.69\00:47:47.40 And I was wondering a lot of Adventists I've--I have on my 00:47:47.40\00:47:52.60 town they look down upon me because I go to church 00:47:52.63\00:47:55.17 on Sunday. 00:47:55.20\00:47:56.64 Could you help me with that, please? 00:47:56.67\00:47:58.54 Doug: Yeah. 00:47:58.57\00:47:59.81 Well, first of all, let me say for the record there are going 00:47:59.84\00:48:01.98 to be millions of people in heaven that went to church 00:48:02.01\00:48:03.95 on Sunday. 00:48:03.98\00:48:05.88 Billy Graham also said there are a number of Adventists that did 00:48:05.91\00:48:10.12 meetings with him, meaning that they would cooperate with some 00:48:10.15\00:48:14.76 of the area churches in inviting people to a Billy Graham crusade 00:48:14.79\00:48:18.99 in the community. 00:48:19.03\00:48:20.36 Now, I can see where there could be some dilemmas with that, but 00:48:20.40\00:48:22.93 I just know there were. 00:48:22.96\00:48:24.30 And Billy Graham knowing that, he would say in those events, 00:48:24.33\00:48:27.50 "See to it that you go to church this weekend." 00:48:27.54\00:48:31.01 And I heard him say that with my own ears in Sacramento. 00:48:31.04\00:48:34.44 So he would sometimes know that there were Sabbath-keeping 00:48:34.48\00:48:37.48 Christians in the crowd and he would be sensitive to that. 00:48:37.51\00:48:39.88 Billy Graham often said, you know, "I've got to work with 00:48:39.91\00:48:42.28 a lot of churches in a lot of different backgrounds. 00:48:42.32\00:48:44.79 Try not to highlight things that are going to separate." 00:48:44.82\00:48:47.42 And so he was sensitive to that. 00:48:47.46\00:48:49.22 But sin is knowing to do good and not doing it. 00:48:49.26\00:48:52.16 Now, while I said there are going to be a lot of Christians 00:48:52.19\00:48:54.03 in heaven that went to church on Sunday, there's not going to be 00:48:54.10\00:48:58.47 anyone in heaven that knew God's will and deliberately did 00:48:58.50\00:49:01.84 something other than His Word. 00:49:01.87\00:49:04.37 Sin is knowing to do good and not doing it. 00:49:04.41\00:49:06.84 And if we know what God's Word clearly says and it's been made 00:49:06.88\00:49:09.61 plain to us and the Holy Spirit's convicted us 00:49:09.64\00:49:12.71 and we go against what we know to be true, that's sin. 00:49:12.75\00:49:16.02 So--I mean, you know, King David I expect to see in heaven. 00:49:16.05\00:49:21.79 He had way too many wives. 00:49:21.82\00:49:24.29 Evidently that wasn't something he was convicted about because 00:49:24.33\00:49:27.40 everybody was doing it back then. 00:49:27.46\00:49:28.73 It just--I don't know if it ever dawned on him or 00:49:28.76\00:49:30.40 his son Solomon. 00:49:30.43\00:49:32.00 Now, if I get too many wives, I'm not going to make it. 00:49:32.03\00:49:35.20 I know better. 00:49:35.24\00:49:36.64 So Abraham had slaves. 00:49:36.67\00:49:39.97 Well, it was ubiquitous back in his time. 00:49:40.01\00:49:42.04 Everybody had slaves. 00:49:42.08\00:49:44.45 We know better now. 00:49:44.48\00:49:46.18 And so when we know what the truth is--it says sin is knowing 00:49:46.21\00:49:51.42 to do good and not doing it, Hebrews 10:26. 00:49:51.45\00:49:54.59 So hopefully that makes sense. 00:49:54.62\00:49:56.42 Yeah, whatever it is, when God reveals truth to you, you should 00:49:56.46\00:49:59.79 walk in the light. 00:49:59.83\00:50:01.10 Jesus said if you know these things, happy are you if you 00:50:01.13\00:50:04.17 do them. 00:50:04.20\00:50:05.73 All right, thanks. 00:50:05.77\00:50:07.07 Jëan: We've got Viemma listening from Washington. 00:50:07.10\00:50:10.01 Viemma, welcome to the program. 00:50:10.04\00:50:11.34 Viemma: Hi. I have a quick question. 00:50:11.37\00:50:15.28 We've been considering having a garage sale, and I would like to 00:50:15.31\00:50:21.48 know if we should be paying tithe on that. 00:50:21.52\00:50:26.09 Because we normally pay tithe, but I didn't know on something 00:50:26.12\00:50:30.79 that you already owned and had paid for if that would be 00:50:30.83\00:50:36.26 the same. 00:50:36.30\00:50:37.60 Doug: Yeah, well, a tithe would be on your increase. 00:50:37.63\00:50:40.30 A garage sale, you're selling something that has value. 00:50:40.34\00:50:43.00 You've invested in and it would be increase, but--keep in mind 00:50:43.04\00:50:47.28 increases in everything. 00:50:47.31\00:50:49.58 What I mean is let's suppose you spend $10 advertising your 00:50:49.61\00:50:53.62 garage sale in the local paper and you make $50 in selling your 00:50:53.65\00:50:58.95 items, your profit has been $40. 00:50:58.99\00:51:01.79 So you pay tithe on your income. 00:51:01.82\00:51:03.86 That's $4. 00:51:03.89\00:51:05.19 We can handle that, and then God will bless you. 00:51:05.23\00:51:08.00 He says, "I'll open the windows of heaven." 00:51:08.03\00:51:09.80 So it doesn't make sense, friends, but take my word 00:51:09.83\00:51:12.50 for it. 00:51:12.53\00:51:13.84 Nine-tenths will go farther than ten-tenths. 00:51:13.87\00:51:16.10 Ninety percent blessed will go farther than one hundred 00:51:16.14\00:51:19.07 percent cursed, so-- 00:51:19.11\00:51:20.74 Jëan: We have a study guide. 00:51:20.78\00:51:22.08 It's called "In God We Trust," and it talks about biblical 00:51:22.11\00:51:24.45 principles of giving. 00:51:24.48\00:51:26.11 Just call and ask for it. 00:51:26.15\00:51:27.45 It's 800-835-6747. 00:51:27.48\00:51:29.62 You can dial #250 on your smartphone. 00:51:29.65\00:51:32.59 Take advantage of these free offers, friends. 00:51:32.62\00:51:34.26 There's just a lot of great Bible material in each of them, 00:51:34.29\00:51:38.23 and we'll send it to you for free. 00:51:38.26\00:51:40.00 We've got Ray in Arizona. 00:51:40.03\00:51:41.56 Ray, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:51:41.60\00:51:44.17 Ray: Good evening. 00:51:44.20\00:51:45.60 Thanks for taking my call. 00:51:45.63\00:51:47.74 My question is, when Adam and Eve sinned against God, were 00:51:47.77\00:51:52.51 they cursed to hell or did they repent and get forgiven? 00:51:52.54\00:51:57.41 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:51:57.45\00:51:59.38 Well, from what we see in the Bible, we believe that Adam 00:51:59.41\00:52:02.35 did repent. 00:52:02.38\00:52:03.79 God established the sacrificial system way back in the beginning 00:52:03.82\00:52:07.32 with Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel. 00:52:07.36\00:52:09.02 It talks about Abel brought a lamb as God had instructed. 00:52:09.06\00:52:12.83 Adam and Eve tried to cover their sin with fig leaves. 00:52:12.86\00:52:16.23 God said, "That will not do." 00:52:16.26\00:52:18.03 And it says He gave them coats of skin. 00:52:18.07\00:52:20.50 Now, this is where we understand that God established the 00:52:20.54\00:52:23.74 sacrificial system. 00:52:23.77\00:52:25.41 And is it Revelation? 00:52:25.44\00:52:27.74 Talks about the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 00:52:27.78\00:52:30.01 I forget the verse. Is that chapter 4? 00:52:30.05\00:52:32.05 And so there at the foundation of the world 00:52:32.08\00:52:34.85 God established the sacrificial system. 00:52:34.88\00:52:37.15 Adam and Eve, I believe, embraced that. 00:52:37.19\00:52:39.99 They will be forgiven. 00:52:40.02\00:52:41.36 I expect we will see them in the Resurrection of the just. 00:52:41.39\00:52:45.26 So there's no explicit word in the Bible that says Adam and Eve 00:52:45.29\00:52:49.06 will be saved and go to heaven, but the evidence is that they 00:52:49.10\00:52:52.40 repented of their sin and that they'll be saved. 00:52:52.43\00:52:55.04 Jëan: Revelation chapter 13, verse 8 is where it refers to 00:52:55.07\00:52:58.04 the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 00:52:58.07\00:53:01.51 Thank you, Ray. 00:53:01.54\00:53:02.84 We've got Carla in Texas. 00:53:02.88\00:53:04.21 Carla, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:53:04.25\00:53:07.35 Kara: Hello. 00:53:07.38\00:53:09.35 My question is, how will we know the signs of the end? 00:53:09.38\00:53:12.59 Doug: Oh, good question. 00:53:12.62\00:53:14.29 Big question. 00:53:14.32\00:53:15.92 How do we know the signs of the end? 00:53:15.96\00:53:18.13 Well, Jesus tells us there's--well, several places. 00:53:18.16\00:53:22.66 Matthew chapter 24, Luke chapter 17, Luke chapter 21, Mark 00:53:22.70\00:53:28.17 chapter 13, and the apostle Paul 1 Timothy and 1 Thessalonians, 00:53:28.20\00:53:33.38 they give you several signs. 00:53:33.41\00:53:34.71 Even in Revelation you'll find some signs. 00:53:34.74\00:53:37.25 Some of these things our Christ said. 00:53:37.28\00:53:39.35 Of course, there'll be wars and rumors of wars, but the end is 00:53:39.38\00:53:42.32 not yet. 00:53:42.35\00:53:43.69 We've had wars and rumors of war since the time of Jesus, but the 00:53:43.72\00:53:47.12 way they accelerate. 00:53:47.16\00:53:48.46 The natural disasters--Christ talks about earthquakes. 00:53:48.49\00:53:51.83 He talks about plagues. 00:53:51.86\00:53:53.19 That's--that would be a pandemic, a plague. 00:53:53.23\00:53:56.03 And so the--you know, before a baby is born, the mother will 00:53:56.06\00:54:01.97 feel some contractions. 00:54:02.00\00:54:03.30 She feels some discomfort, and there are some pains. 00:54:03.34\00:54:06.74 That's sort of normal with pregnancy. 00:54:06.78\00:54:09.14 But then just before delivery there's an increase--a sudden 00:54:09.18\00:54:13.95 intense increase in the pain and the frequency and the intensity, 00:54:13.98\00:54:19.92 and the doctor knows that as the contractions get closer and get 00:54:19.95\00:54:23.89 more severe you're going to have a baby. 00:54:23.93\00:54:26.76 Paul says the whole creation groans and labors, it travails, 00:54:26.80\00:54:31.10 waiting to be delivered. 00:54:31.13\00:54:33.10 And so we see as we near the end of time the natural disasters 00:54:33.13\00:54:37.81 seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity. 00:54:37.84\00:54:41.04 The wars are getting bigger and more devastating like World War 00:54:41.08\00:54:44.68 I and World War II. 00:54:44.71\00:54:46.68 So that's one sign. 00:54:46.72\00:54:47.95 Now, one of the big signs for me--you read in Daniel 12, it 00:54:47.98\00:54:51.12 said, "Many will run to and fro, and knowledge will increase." 00:54:51.15\00:54:54.56 Look at how knowledge is exploded with AI and TVs and 00:54:54.59\00:54:58.73 radios and how different it is from people 100 years ago. 00:54:58.76\00:55:02.03 The way we live and we fly around the world in a couple of 00:55:02.06\00:55:04.97 days, that's one thing. 00:55:05.00\00:55:07.50 And then another thing, Jesus said the gospel of this kingdom 00:55:07.54\00:55:10.41 will be preached in all the world then the end will come. 00:55:10.44\00:55:14.31 Well, now through radio, TV, internet, and, you know, tapes 00:55:14.34\00:55:19.21 and so forth, books, the gospel is going into every corner of 00:55:19.25\00:55:22.92 the world, then the end will come. 00:55:22.95\00:55:25.42 Thank you, Carla. 00:55:25.45\00:55:26.76 We have a book that talks about some of the signs of Christ 00:55:26.79\00:55:28.72 coming, and it's in our study guide rather. 00:55:28.76\00:55:30.93 Jëan: All right, it's called "Ultimate Deliverance," which is 00:55:30.96\00:55:33.26 talking about the Second Coming of Christ. 00:55:33.29\00:55:34.73 The number to call is 800-835-6747 or dial #250. 00:55:34.76\00:55:41.84 Next caller that we have is Denise in Rhode Island. 00:55:41.87\00:55:44.21 Denise, we got about a minute. 00:55:44.24\00:55:46.04 Your question. 00:55:46.07\00:55:47.41 Denise: My question is I was reading Genesis today 00:55:47.44\00:55:49.04 and--Genesis 4. 00:55:49.08\00:55:50.41 Seems like lots of people today are asking about Genesis. 00:55:50.45\00:55:54.88 Why do people believe that they have eternal life when it says 00:55:54.92\00:55:58.49 plainly that God sent them out of the Garden of Eden with 00:55:58.52\00:56:03.89 a angel protecting the entrance of the tree of life? 00:56:03.93\00:56:08.10 It seems like we don't have it, but so many people believe that 00:56:08.13\00:56:11.40 we have eternal life even though it says here plainly that God is 00:56:11.43\00:56:15.87 protecting us from getting access--having access to it. 00:56:15.90\00:56:20.28 Doug: Yeah, you're on the right track because God said that we 00:56:20.31\00:56:24.08 don't have eternal life. 00:56:24.11\00:56:25.41 He said, "In the day that you sin thereof, you will 00:56:25.45\00:56:27.02 surely die." 00:56:27.05\00:56:28.38 And He set up a cherubim to guard the way with a flaming 00:56:28.42\00:56:30.92 sword to the tree of life and He said, "Lest the man eat from the 00:56:30.95\00:56:34.56 tree and live forever." 00:56:34.59\00:56:37.03 Jëan: All right. 00:56:37.06\00:56:38.36 Well, Pastor Doug, we have a few email questions. 00:56:38.39\00:56:39.73 So we want to try and get that in before we run out of time. 00:56:39.76\00:56:41.90 Question one it says, "Can you please explain the special 00:56:41.93\00:56:45.90 resurrection and the general resurrection?" 00:56:45.93\00:56:49.60 Doug: Yeah, though--Jesus indicated that--when he was 00:56:49.64\00:56:52.67 being tried, he told the high priest, I think this is Matthew 00:56:52.71\00:56:55.68 27, he said, "Hereafter you will see the Son of Man coming in the 00:56:55.71\00:57:00.75 clouds with great glory." 00:57:00.78\00:57:02.78 So there was a special resurrection. 00:57:02.82\00:57:04.99 Those involved in the persecution of Christ in the 00:57:05.02\00:57:08.29 trial condemning him are going to be brought forth to see 00:57:08.32\00:57:10.69 him come. 00:57:10.73\00:57:12.06 Jëan: All right, another question. 00:57:12.09\00:57:13.40 Roni is asking, "Is it wrong for a Christian to 00:57:13.43\00:57:14.73 learn self-defense?" 00:57:14.76\00:57:16.00 He's not talking about wanting to be involved in competitive 00:57:16.03\00:57:18.23 sports but just worst-case scenario if you need to 00:57:18.27\00:57:21.44 defend yourself. 00:57:21.47\00:57:23.17 Doug: You know, I think that it's almost natural for young 00:57:23.20\00:57:26.37 men to wrestle. 00:57:26.41\00:57:27.71 We've got boys. 00:57:27.74\00:57:29.08 You've got boys. 00:57:29.11\00:57:30.41 And so, you know, wrestling, fighting, some of that--I think, 00:57:30.45\00:57:36.18 you know, you sure don't want to ever have to use that, but it's 00:57:36.22\00:57:38.59 probably not a bad thing to go through the exercise that's 00:57:38.62\00:57:41.46 involved in it. 00:57:41.49\00:57:42.72 If a person's taking a course where they're learning jujitsu 00:57:42.76\00:57:45.69 and they're learning to wrestle and grapple, don't want to do 00:57:45.73\00:57:48.43 anything that's going to hurt somebody deliberately. 00:57:48.46\00:57:50.23 As far as possible, I think a Christian ought to try to turn 00:57:50.27\00:57:52.97 the other cheek and practice what Jesus said and be 00:57:53.00\00:57:56.71 a peacemaker. 00:57:56.74\00:57:58.04 Anyway, friends, you can hear the music. 00:57:58.07\00:57:59.57 God bless. 00:57:59.61\00:58:00.98 Go to AmazingFacts.org. 00:58:01.01\00:58:02.51 There's more there. 00:58:02.54\00:58:03.85 We'll be back next week. 00:58:03.88\00:58:05.68 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:58:07.18\00:58:09.78 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:58:09.82\00:58:13.46 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:58:13.49\00:58:17.59 a faith-based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:58:17.63\00:58:21.40 ¤¤¤ 00:58:21.43\00:58:26.80
