male announcer: It is the best selling book in history. 00:00:03.20\00:00:05.73 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, and its 00:00:05.83\00:00:10.21 words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, should 00:00:10.34\00:00:14.31 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.34\00:00:16.48 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.51\00:00:19.95 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate and practical 00:00:19.98\00:00:24.59 answers to all your Bible questions. 00:00:24.62\00:00:28.39 This broadcast is a previously recorded episode. 00:00:28.42\00:00:31.36 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.10 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.13\00:00:39.00 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:39.03\00:00:44.21 Now here's your host from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:44.24\00:00:48.08 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:48.11\00:00:50.08 Doug Batchelor: Hello, listening friends. 00:00:50.11\00:00:51.45 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:51.48\00:00:54.35 The fastest speed ever recorded by a horse was in 2005, when a 00:00:54.38\00:00:59.09 quarterhorse called A Long Goodbye reached 55 miles an hour 00:00:59.12\00:01:03.73 in a sprint. 00:01:03.76\00:01:05.29 The fastest running speed ever recorded by a human was Usain 00:01:05.33\00:01:09.16 Bolt on August 16, 2009, at the World Championships in 00:01:09.20\00:01:13.07 Berlin, Germany. 00:01:13.10\00:01:14.60 The Olympic champion reached 27 miles an hour. 00:01:14.64\00:01:18.71 So what would be the chances of a man winning a race against 00:01:18.74\00:01:21.74 a horse? 00:01:21.78\00:01:23.11 Probably better than you think. 00:01:23.14\00:01:24.91 That is, if the race is long enough. 00:01:24.95\00:01:27.52 It happened in 2004 at the 25th annual Man versus Horse 00:01:27.55\00:01:31.92 21-mile-long marathon in Wales, Britain. 00:01:31.95\00:01:35.72 With 500 runners and 40 horses, Huw Lobb won in 2 hours and 00:01:35.76\00:01:40.76 5 minutes. 00:01:40.80\00:01:42.06 What's more, he beat the horse by 11 minutes. 00:01:42.10\00:01:45.00 It was the first time that a man has won the race and the prize 00:01:45.03\00:01:48.70 of 25,000 pounds. 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.27 When it comes to long distances, humans can outrun almost any 00:01:51.31\00:01:55.41 animal, especially on a hot day. 00:01:55.44\00:01:58.25 Because we cool by sweating rather than panting, we can stay 00:01:58.28\00:02:01.95 cool at speeds and distances that would overheat 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.42 other animals. 00:02:04.45\00:02:06.22 Some people think it's impossible to outrun temptation, 00:02:06.25\00:02:09.66 but they underestimate what we can do with God's power, 00:02:09.69\00:02:12.33 Pastor Ross. 00:02:12.36\00:02:13.80 Jean Ross: That's right, Pastor Doug. 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.10 The Bible says that all things are possible to those 00:02:15.13\00:02:17.17 who believe. 00:02:17.20\00:02:18.50 With faith, you know, it is possible to please God to do 00:02:18.53\00:02:20.90 those things that are pleasing to him. 00:02:20.94\00:02:22.64 Doug: Yep, absolutely. 00:02:22.67\00:02:24.17 Our friends might be surprised to know there's a couple of 00:02:24.21\00:02:26.07 verses in the Bible that talk about people racing horses. 00:02:26.11\00:02:29.94 You've got the verse there in Jeremiah chapter 12, verse 5. 00:02:29.98\00:02:34.38 It says: "If you've run with the footmen, and they've wearied 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.05 you, how will you contend," or compete, "with horses?" 00:02:37.09\00:02:40.96 And then you can read in 1 Kings 18, verse 46 that it talks about 00:02:40.99\00:02:45.19 when "the Spirit of the Lord, the hand of the Lord, came on 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.83 Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab," 00:02:47.86\00:02:52.20 that's Ahab's chariot, "to the entrance of Jezreel." 00:02:52.23\00:02:55.20 He was running before the king and his horses. 00:02:55.24\00:02:58.47 But we're really thinking not about a race against horses, 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.01 but, really, a race of life and against temptation and sin. 00:03:01.04\00:03:05.31 Paul talks about that in Hebrews 12, verse 1-2: "Wherefore," I 00:03:05.35\00:03:10.25 should say, "Therefore, since we also are surrounded by a great 00:03:10.29\00:03:13.62 cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin 00:03:13.66\00:03:17.83 that does so easily ensnare us, and let us run with endurance 00:03:17.86\00:03:21.46 the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author 00:03:21.50\00:03:25.60 and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before 00:03:25.63\00:03:29.00 Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at 00:03:29.04\00:03:33.48 the right hand of the throne of God." 00:03:33.51\00:03:36.18 Tells us the only way we can run this race is by laying aside the 00:03:36.21\00:03:39.91 weights and the sin and looking unto Jesus. 00:03:39.95\00:03:43.42 So, can we outrun temptation? 00:03:43.45\00:03:47.16 Not by ourselves, but with God's help, all things are possible. 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.89 Jean: You know, we have a book. 00:03:50.93\00:03:52.23 It's called, "Tips for Resisting Temptation." 00:03:52.26\00:03:53.80 It gives those biblical principles as to how we 00:03:53.83\00:03:55.96 can resist. 00:03:56.00\00:03:57.30 The Bible--it's good news. 00:03:57.33\00:03:58.67 The Bible speaks that those who trust in Christ, they 00:03:58.70\00:04:01.30 can overcome. 00:04:01.34\00:04:02.80 Blessed are those who overcome, the book of Revelation says. 00:04:02.84\00:04:05.74 We'll send this book free to anyone who calls and asks. 00:04:05.77\00:04:08.11 The number is 800-835-6747, and you can ask for the book. 00:04:08.14\00:04:12.31 It's called, "Tips for Resisting Temptation." 00:04:12.35\00:04:15.02 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:04:15.05\00:04:18.29 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone and ask for the book 00:04:18.32\00:04:21.96 by name, and we'll be able to send it to you. 00:04:21.99\00:04:24.63 Well, Pastor Doug, before we go to the phone lines, we've got a 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.00 few folks who are standing by. 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.73 Let's start with prayer. 00:04:28.76\00:04:30.67 Dear Lord, once again we are grateful that we have this time 00:04:30.70\00:04:32.93 to open up Your Word and study the most important book dealing 00:04:32.97\00:04:36.27 with the most important subject. 00:04:36.30\00:04:38.44 And so Father, we pray Your blessing upon this program 00:04:38.47\00:04:40.64 this evening. 00:04:40.68\00:04:41.98 Be with those who are listening wherever they might be, and 00:04:42.01\00:04:43.51 guide us into a clearer understanding of Bible truth, 00:04:43.55\00:04:46.18 for we ask this in Jesus's name, amen. 00:04:46.21\00:04:48.98 Doug: Amen. 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.35 Jean: Now, Pastor Doug, as I look at those lining up, we want 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.39 to thank all of those who have called in. 00:04:52.42\00:04:54.69 I see we have some repeat callers, which is always nice, 00:04:54.72\00:04:58.06 but if you're a first-time caller, we want to make sure 00:04:58.09\00:05:00.83 that we get your call on the air. 00:05:00.86\00:05:03.06 So if you've never picked up your phone and called with your 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.60 Bible question, do it now. 00:05:05.63\00:05:07.57 The number here to the studio is 800-463-7297. 00:05:07.60\00:05:12.57 That's 800-463-7297 with your Bible question, and we'll try to 00:05:12.61\00:05:19.18 get you near the front of the line if you're a 00:05:19.21\00:05:21.08 first-time caller. 00:05:21.12\00:05:22.75 We're ready for our caller first. 00:05:22.78\00:05:24.55 We got Laura in Colorado. 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.59 Laura, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.52 Laura: Yes, my question is if you cuss at the Spirit, can you 00:05:29.56\00:05:33.60 be forgiven? 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.06 Doug: If you could, like, if you're in a seance and you try 00:05:35.10\00:05:38.13 to consult with evil spirits, can you be forgiven? 00:05:38.17\00:05:40.24 Is that your question? 00:05:40.27\00:05:41.87 Lori: No, let's just say, like, you said "F the Spirit" 00:05:41.90\00:05:44.87 because you were mad, can you be forgiven? 00:05:44.91\00:05:47.61 Doug: Oh, is that the unpardonable sin, yes. 00:05:47.64\00:05:49.98 When the Bible says, "All manner of sin and blasphemy will be 00:05:50.01\00:05:51.75 forgiven men, but it's the blasphemy against the 00:05:51.78\00:05:54.32 Holy Spirit." 00:05:54.35\00:05:55.65 Now that certainly is a sin, don't misunderstand. 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.85 But blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not losing your 00:05:57.89\00:06:00.89 temper, getting discouraged, and cursing God or the Holy Spirit. 00:06:00.92\00:06:04.93 While that would be a sin, it's talking about an ongoing 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.66 resistance to the voice of the Holy Spirit, so you no longer 00:06:08.70\00:06:11.90 hear the Holy Spirit anymore. 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.07 So when a person grieves away the Holy Spirit, as in the case 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.21 of King Saul and Judas, and Balaam, and a few others in the 00:06:18.24\00:06:21.94 Bible, then they've reached the point of no return. 00:06:21.98\00:06:25.65 But if you're, you know, if a person sinned and they feel 00:06:25.68\00:06:28.38 conviction, and they repent of their sins, the Lord is always 00:06:28.42\00:06:31.39 willing to forgive if we're willing to confess and repent. 00:06:31.42\00:06:34.22 Jean: And I think we have a book, Pastor Doug, talking about 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.22 that subject: "What is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:06:36.26\00:06:38.39 And you can call and ask for it. 00:06:38.43\00:06:39.76 We'll send it to you. 00:06:39.79\00:06:41.06 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:06:41.10\00:06:44.20 You can ask for the book, "What is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:06:44.23\00:06:46.70 Friends, if you're listening outside of North America and you 00:06:46.74\00:06:49.24 can't call to get the book, just go to the website, just 00:06:49.27\00:06:51.91 AmazingFacts.org, and you can read the book there online. 00:06:51.94\00:06:56.75 Thank you. 00:06:56.78\00:06:58.11 Next caller that we have is Kimberly in California. 00:06:58.15\00:06:59.88 Kimberly, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:06:59.91\00:07:03.12 Kimberly: Yes, good evening. 00:07:03.15\00:07:04.59 This is Kimberly from Bakersfield. 00:07:04.62\00:07:06.92 Doug: Thanks for calling. 00:07:06.96\00:07:08.76 And your question? 00:07:08.79\00:07:10.56 Kimberly: Okay, yes. 00:07:10.59\00:07:11.93 So, in Revelations 12:6, it talks about the woman, or Israel 00:07:11.96\00:07:17.10 possibly, fleeing to the wilderness for 1260 days. 00:07:17.13\00:07:23.47 But then in Daniel 12:11, it says after the abomination 00:07:23.51\00:07:29.11 happens, there'll be 12-- there'll be 1290 days. 00:07:29.14\00:07:34.08 And then Daniel 12:12 says: Blessed is he who waits until 00:07:34.12\00:07:39.12 the 1335 days. 00:07:39.15\00:07:41.96 So can you explain the differences between these and 00:07:41.99\00:07:44.53 what possibly is happening between those time periods? 00:07:44.56\00:07:48.86 Doug: I can. 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.27 It's hard to do it in the 3 or 4 minutes we kind of budget for a 00:07:50.30\00:07:53.77 question because you're asking about--we have a lesson that 00:07:53.80\00:07:58.14 covers some of that, but let me give you a quick, 00:07:58.17\00:07:59.77 quick overview. 00:07:59.81\00:08:01.21 The number 1260. 00:08:01.24\00:08:03.31 In the Jewish calendar, there are 360 days in the year. 00:08:03.35\00:08:07.42 They use a lunar calendar. 00:08:07.45\00:08:09.82 And so, half of 360 is 12-- 1260. 00:08:09.85\00:08:18.23 So it's what we would call 42 months or 3.5 years. 00:08:18.26\00:08:22.63 And so, you'll often see that number. 00:08:22.66\00:08:25.77 The famine of Elijah was 3.5 years. 00:08:25.80\00:08:30.01 It's 3.5 years into the reign of King Ahasuerus that the queen is 00:08:30.04\00:08:35.08 dethroned and they begin the search that becomes Esther. 00:08:35.11\00:08:39.65 You find 3.5 in the ministry of Jesus. 00:08:39.68\00:08:42.25 He taught for 3.5 years. 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.15 Then after his death and resurrection, there's 3.5 years 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.76 until the stoning of Stephen, and the gospel then goes to 00:08:47.79\00:08:51.03 the Gentiles. 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.36 There's a--there's a prophetic 3.5 years that you mentioned 00:08:52.39\00:08:55.93 there in Revelation chapter 12, where it talks about the woman 00:08:55.96\00:08:59.37 fleeing into the wilderness. 00:08:59.40\00:09:00.77 Now, I think that woman is not just talking about Israel, I 00:09:00.80\00:09:03.87 think it's talking about the Church that goes underground. 00:09:03.91\00:09:07.98 So, and God, it says, miraculously feeds her there. 00:09:08.01\00:09:11.68 So, what is the difference then between what you find in Daniel? 00:09:11.71\00:09:16.58 Now, there is an overlap between Daniel, chapters 7, 8, 9, and 00:09:16.62\00:09:22.49 what you find in Revelation. 00:09:22.52\00:09:23.89 They both have the 1260, and what's a quick way to answer 00:09:23.93\00:09:28.73 that, Pastor Ross? 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.07 I know you know it as well, if not better than I do, but--. 00:09:30.10\00:09:31.93 Jean: Yeah, just a real quick answer on that. 00:09:31.97\00:09:33.47 So you've got 1260, 1290, and 1335. 00:09:33.50\00:09:37.27 The 1260, as you mentioned, Pastor Doug, specifically in 00:09:37.31\00:09:39.64 Revelation 12--. 00:09:39.67\00:09:40.98 Doug: Pardon me, all three of those numbers are in Daniel 12. 00:09:41.01\00:09:43.24 Jean: Yes, they're in chapter 12, and the 1260 is mentioned 7 00:09:43.28\00:09:47.45 times in scripture, so it's an important number. 00:09:47.48\00:09:50.75 Begins with the decree, well, really, the establishment of the 00:09:50.79\00:09:53.09 papal power in 538. 00:09:53.12\00:09:55.36 And it continues to 1798 when the political power of the 00:09:55.39\00:09:59.09 papacy was removed. 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.63 So that's the 1260. 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.83 The 1290 begins a little earlier, and that's in 508. 00:10:02.86\00:10:07.87 You have the first nation, the French under the Franks, or 00:10:07.90\00:10:11.24 Clovis, king of the Frank, it was the first nation to decree 00:10:11.27\00:10:15.21 Catholicism as the official religion and really helped to 00:10:15.24\00:10:19.38 establish the political power of the papacy. 00:10:19.41\00:10:22.38 And that continued until 1798, so the 1290 begins in 508. 00:10:22.42\00:10:26.65 And then the 1335, beginning in 508, goes all the way through to 00:10:26.69\00:10:30.66 1843, 1844, and there was a great revival that took place. 00:10:30.69\00:10:35.63 So in a nutshell, those times do overlap, but they deal with 00:10:35.66\00:10:38.57 different prophetic aspects that took place during the Dark Ages. 00:10:38.60\00:10:42.64 Doug: We need to put together a simple chart because we get that 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.24 question a lot, that explains that and I think you just 00:10:45.27\00:10:47.88 finished a series of lessons on Daniel and I bet you have 00:10:47.91\00:10:50.91 something like that in there. 00:10:50.95\00:10:52.28 Jean: We do. We've got some charts. 00:10:52.31\00:10:53.72 They're actually busy laying it out right now, so, it will 00:10:53.75\00:10:56.22 be available. 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.22 All right, thank you, Kimberly. We've got Gary in Illinois. 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.12 Gary, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:11:01.16\00:11:04.99 Gary: Thank you. 00:11:05.03\00:11:06.36 In Genesis 2:15, it says, "Then God took the man and put him in 00:11:06.39\00:11:11.90 the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it." 00:11:11.93\00:11:15.90 Is that a call for humanity to be good stewards of the planet? 00:11:15.94\00:11:21.28 Doug: Well, I think that certainly is a pattern that, you 00:11:21.31\00:11:24.28 know, originally, man was to be a horticulturist. 00:11:24.31\00:11:27.92 God made man to be in the garden, and never is a man 00:11:27.95\00:11:32.15 closer to God than when he's in the garden. 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.16 Because this is my Father's world, as you say, we are to 00:11:35.19\00:11:40.36 care for it, and to be good stewards of the planet. 00:11:40.40\00:11:44.00 And, you know, I think that when it comes to using the resources, 00:11:44.03\00:11:47.14 they're there to be used, but they should be used responsibly. 00:11:47.17\00:11:51.07 We have a little bit of land where we do occasional logging, 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.91 but we do what they call organic logging. 00:11:53.94\00:11:55.68 We thin the trees. 00:11:55.71\00:11:57.91 And so, I think that it's really important that people do 00:11:57.95\00:12:01.62 recognize, it says in Revelation, is it chapter 11 00:12:01.65\00:12:04.95 where it says, "God will destroy those that destroy the earth"? 00:12:04.99\00:12:08.16 And so, there's a judgment for people that not only abuse their 00:12:08.19\00:12:12.56 bodies, the Bible said, "Your body is the temple of the Holy 00:12:12.59\00:12:15.70 Spirit; whoever defiles that temple, him will God destroy." 00:12:15.73\00:12:19.27 I think if we destroy God's creation, there's also judgment 00:12:19.30\00:12:22.87 for that. 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.24 So hopefully that answers that, Gary, and good question. 00:12:24.27\00:12:27.18 Jean: Anthony's listening in New York. 00:12:27.21\00:12:28.58 Anthony, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:12:28.61\00:12:31.95 Anthony: Hello, good evening, Pastors. 00:12:31.98\00:12:33.58 Doug: Evening. 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.42 Anthony: In Luke chapter 8 with the woman with the issue of 00:12:35.45\00:12:38.65 blood, Jesus said, "Who touched Me?" 00:12:38.69\00:12:42.19 And He said, "Somebody has touched Me: for I perceive that 00:12:42.22\00:12:45.13 virtue has gone out of Me." 00:12:45.16\00:12:47.13 And then over in John chapter 20, verse 17, when after He 00:12:47.20\00:12:53.27 resurrected and Mary was in the garden, Jesus says--"Jesus said 00:12:53.30\00:12:58.24 unto her, 'Touch Me not; for I am not yet ascended to My 00:12:58.27\00:13:02.18 Father: but go to My brethren and say unto them, "I ascend 00:13:02.21\00:13:05.28 unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God and your God."'" 00:13:05.31\00:13:07.78 So, my question is, why didn't Jesus want anyone to touch Him 00:13:07.82\00:13:13.62 before He presented Himself to the Father? 00:13:13.66\00:13:15.26 Is it because He had to maintain His disposition as the spotless 00:13:15.29\00:13:19.96 Lamb, untainted by sin, and didn't want to be tainted by 00:13:20.00\00:13:22.63 sin, if--by anyone touching Him, or does it have something to do 00:13:22.66\00:13:26.03 with when, you know, somebody touching Him and virtue leaving 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.64 Him before He presented Himself resurrected to His 00:13:29.67\00:13:34.64 heavenly Father? 00:13:34.68\00:13:35.98 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:13:36.01\00:13:37.35 I remember when I first read that verse, I thought, "Well, I 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.28 thought He really loved Mary Magdalene; she certainly 00:13:39.31\00:13:41.55 loved Him. 00:13:41.58\00:13:42.92 Why would He say, 'Don't touch Me'?" 00:13:42.95\00:13:44.25 It's like you're unclean, don't touch Me. 00:13:44.29\00:13:46.29 I was relieved to find out that word there, "Don't touch Me," 00:13:46.32\00:13:48.99 it's not the best translation in the King James. 00:13:49.02\00:13:51.49 Maybe some other versions have it that way. 00:13:51.53\00:13:53.80 If you'll look, for instance, the New King James says, "Do not 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.23 cling to Me." 00:13:56.26\00:13:57.60 The word there could also mean hold or to cling. 00:13:57.63\00:14:02.10 He said, "Do not detain Me, 'cause I've not yet ascended to 00:14:02.14\00:14:05.87 My Father." 00:14:05.91\00:14:07.21 In other words, Christ said, "I've just risen. 00:14:07.24\00:14:08.58 I've not even ascended before the Father to have My sacrifice 00:14:08.61\00:14:11.85 declared victorious. 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.48 I will be back." 00:14:13.52\00:14:14.85 And notice when He does come back, and I think it's in 00:14:14.88\00:14:16.99 Matthew, where they worship Him, they grab His feet, and He says, 00:14:17.02\00:14:20.32 "All hail." 00:14:20.36\00:14:21.69 So He wasn't opposed to them touching Him because they 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.36 certainly touched Him later. 00:14:23.39\00:14:24.73 He said, "Put your hand in My side. 00:14:24.76\00:14:26.43 Touch My hands. 00:14:26.46\00:14:27.76 See that I'm not a spirit, that I've got flesh and bone." 00:14:27.76\00:14:31.17 And so Jesus was not opposed to the disciples touching Him 00:14:31.20\00:14:34.20 after resurrection. 00:14:34.24\00:14:35.57 He just told Mary, "Do not detain Me. 00:14:35.60\00:14:38.51 Do not cling to Me 'cause I've--" she may have already 00:14:38.54\00:14:40.88 been grabbing His feet. 00:14:40.91\00:14:42.24 He said, "Don't hold Me. 00:14:42.28\00:14:43.61 I've got to go to My Father, but I want you to go tell 00:14:43.65\00:14:45.48 our brethren." 00:14:45.51\00:14:46.75 So no, it wasn't that He thought that she was unclean and that He 00:14:46.78\00:14:50.52 would somehow be contaminated. 00:14:50.55\00:14:51.92 It actually means do not hold or cling or detain Me. 00:14:51.95\00:14:56.76 Thanks, good question, Anthony. 00:14:56.79\00:14:58.09 I'm glad you asked it. 00:14:58.13\00:14:59.46 Jean: We got Tim in Arkansas. 00:14:59.49\00:15:00.86 Tim, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:15:00.90\00:15:04.00 Tim: Good evening, Pastors. 00:15:04.03\00:15:05.37 How are y'all? 00:15:05.40\00:15:06.70 Doug: Much better than we deserve. 00:15:06.74\00:15:08.97 Tim: Amen. 00:15:09.00\00:15:10.24 Hey, my question is, in the New Testament, why is Jesus Christ-- 00:15:10.27\00:15:16.28 they say Jesus Christ in the same sentence, then they change 00:15:16.31\00:15:19.88 it back over to Christ Jesus. 00:15:19.91\00:15:22.35 Is there a reason for that? 00:15:22.38\00:15:25.42 Doug: Well, I--if you understand that it's not like my 00:15:25.45\00:15:29.19 name, which is Douglas Batchelor, you would never say 00:15:29.22\00:15:32.36 Batchelor Douglas. 00:15:32.39\00:15:33.73 That would seem odd, unless, of course, you're going 00:15:33.76\00:15:36.26 alphabetically in school, and there's a comma after Batchelor. 00:15:36.30\00:15:40.27 But Christ is the title, and so He is Messiah Jesus, Jesus 00:15:40.30\00:15:47.98 the Messiah. 00:15:48.01\00:15:49.74 So it can be said interchangeably because one is a 00:15:49.78\00:15:52.28 title and one is a name that, you know, was more of a proper 00:15:52.31\00:15:56.58 name that He had been given. 00:15:56.62\00:15:58.15 But it's interesting, His name also means Yeshua, which means 00:15:58.19\00:16:03.09 God or Jehovah saves. 00:16:03.12\00:16:05.39 So, it's Messiah, God saves, or God saves the Messiah, the 00:16:05.43\00:16:12.30 Anointed One. 00:16:12.33\00:16:13.67 That's what that means. 00:16:13.70\00:16:15.00 Jean: And Christ, there's the Greek version for the word 00:16:15.04\00:16:17.07 Messiah, which is Hebrew. 00:16:17.11\00:16:18.41 Doug: For anointing, yeah. 00:16:18.44\00:16:19.77 Jean: The Anointed One. 00:16:19.81\00:16:21.11 Doug: Yeah, when they launch a ship, they christen it. 00:16:21.14\00:16:22.68 That means they anoint it. 00:16:22.71\00:16:24.01 Usually they break champagne over it, but they call that 00:16:24.05\00:16:26.21 a christening. 00:16:26.25\00:16:27.58 It means an anointing. 00:16:27.62\00:16:28.92 Jean: So in other words, you could say, for example, Dr. 00:16:28.95\00:16:30.62 So-and-so, or you can say So-and-so, doctor, because the 00:16:30.65\00:16:35.02 one's the title and the Messiah or the Christ is the title and 00:16:35.06\00:16:38.36 Jesus is the name. 00:16:38.39\00:16:40.20 All right, good. Robert in Washington. 00:16:40.23\00:16:42.86 Robert, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:16:42.90\00:16:45.73 Robert: Hello, evening, Pastors. 00:16:45.77\00:16:47.10 Doug: Evening. 00:16:47.14\00:16:48.44 Robert: My question tonight was, what is the new covenant, 00:16:48.47\00:16:52.67 because I was reading in Hebrews 8 through--Hebrews 8:7 through 00:16:52.71\00:16:56.48 10 that it seems like that God writing his law in our hearts is 00:16:56.51\00:17:03.62 the new covenant. 00:17:03.65\00:17:05.05 But then I was reading tonight in Matthew 26, where it talks 00:17:05.09\00:17:08.76 about Jesus saying, "This is My blood of the new covenant." 00:17:08.79\00:17:13.93 So there must be some kind of thing that would explain what 00:17:13.96\00:17:21.40 the new covenant is. 00:17:21.44\00:17:23.17 Doug: Yeah, well, what you read there, you're right, and--but 00:17:23.20\00:17:25.91 that goes together perfectly. 00:17:25.94\00:17:28.38 To understand the new covenant, it's good to take a peek at the 00:17:28.41\00:17:30.68 old covenant. 00:17:30.71\00:17:32.05 The old covenant, and you read this in Deuteronomy, I think 00:17:32.08\00:17:34.22 it's chapter 4, verse 13, says, "And He gave them His covenant 00:17:34.25\00:17:38.15 ten commandments, which He commanded them to observe." 00:17:38.19\00:17:42.66 The covenant was ratified with blood. 00:17:42.69\00:17:45.19 Even in the days of Moses, there was a sacrifice that was made 00:17:45.23\00:17:48.66 that ratified the covenant. 00:17:48.70\00:17:50.60 And so it's saying that the new covenant is the same law written 00:17:50.63\00:17:55.40 in our hearts rather on stone. 00:17:55.44\00:17:57.81 Instead of it being based on the promise of the people: in the 00:17:57.84\00:18:00.54 old covenant, the people told the Lord, "All the Lord has said 00:18:00.58\00:18:03.98 we will do." 00:18:04.01\00:18:05.31 They said, "We will promise to keep Your law." 00:18:05.35\00:18:07.78 The new covenant says, "I'm making a promise. 00:18:07.82\00:18:10.15 I will cause you to walk in My ways, and I will write My law in 00:18:10.19\00:18:13.15 your heart. 00:18:13.19\00:18:14.49 You'll be motivated by love instead of just being compelled 00:18:14.52\00:18:17.26 by your own power and will." 00:18:17.29\00:18:20.00 And no one really can keep God's law that way. 00:18:20.03\00:18:22.83 People in the Old Testament are actually saved by the 00:18:22.86\00:18:25.63 new covenant. 00:18:25.67\00:18:27.00 And so Jesus at the Last Supper, He's saying, "This is the blood 00:18:27.04\00:18:29.64 of the covenant, and," you know, "My body and My blood," and that 00:18:29.67\00:18:35.41 was really sealing it. 00:18:35.44\00:18:36.78 They would have a sacrifice where they would sprinkle blood, 00:18:36.81\00:18:39.45 and they'd offer the body of the victim. 00:18:39.48\00:18:41.82 And so Christ is making statements about the sacrifice 00:18:41.85\00:18:44.82 of the covenant. 00:18:44.85\00:18:46.35 But the first place you find the new covenant is actually in the 00:18:46.39\00:18:50.73 Old Testament, right? 00:18:50.76\00:18:52.39 I'm dyslexic. 00:18:52.43\00:18:53.76 I think it's Jeremiah 31:31 is where you find it, and he says, 00:18:53.80\00:18:58.07 "A new covenant I'll make." 00:18:58.10\00:18:59.63 And Moses even alludes to the new covenant where he said, you 00:18:59.67\00:19:03.27 know, instead of it being circumcision in the flesh, it 00:19:03.30\00:19:06.07 should be circumcision of the heart. 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.28 So they understood the principle that the--only the new covenant 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.65 is really what God wants. 00:19:11.68\00:19:13.31 King David said, "Sacrifice and offerings you do not desire, but 00:19:13.35\00:19:18.12 a body I prepared," and what God desires is a contrite heart. 00:19:18.15\00:19:22.36 They all understood that what really God wanted was a 00:19:22.39\00:19:25.13 transformed heart. 00:19:25.16\00:19:26.80 Ezekiel said, "I'll sprinkle you, and He's going to make a 00:19:26.83\00:19:29.80 new covenant with us. 00:19:29.83\00:19:31.17 I'll write my law in your hearts." 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.93 So that's the new covenant, and we have a book on that, I think. 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.67 Jean: I'm trying to think, Pastor Doug, 00:19:35.70\00:19:37.04 what the name of that-- 00:19:37.07\00:19:38.51 Doug: Well, probably the, "What Was Nailed to the Cross," 00:19:38.54\00:19:42.58 I think talks about that. 00:19:42.61\00:19:43.91 Jean: Is that the name of the book? 00:19:43.95\00:19:45.28 Doug: Yeah, it's one of them. 00:19:45.31\00:19:46.82 We've got two or three books that talk about the subject, and 00:19:46.85\00:19:50.69 we've got, you know, "Written in Stone," I think, talks about the 00:19:50.72\00:19:53.66 new and the old covenant too. 00:19:53.69\00:19:55.46 Jean: All right, we've got a number of resources talking 00:19:55.49\00:19:57.83 about the new covenant. 00:19:57.86\00:19:59.16 Just call and ask, "Written in Stone" and we'll be happy to 00:19:59.19\00:20:01.86 send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:20:01.90\00:20:04.37 Also, the book, talking about the new covenant. 00:20:04.40\00:20:06.57 Don't we have a book called, "Why the Old Covenant Failed"? 00:20:06.60\00:20:08.90 Doug: Yeah, there you go. 00:20:08.94\00:20:10.24 Jean: That's the one I was thinking about, yeah. 00:20:10.27\00:20:11.61 So you can call and ask for that. 00:20:11.64\00:20:12.94 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:20:12.97\00:20:15.81 Ask for the book, "Why the Old Covenant Failed." 00:20:15.84\00:20:18.38 And also ask for the study guide; it's called "Written 00:20:18.41\00:20:20.28 in Stone." 00:20:20.32\00:20:21.65 Doug: Wait, I want to confuse 'em more. 00:20:21.68\00:20:22.98 We got another one, yeah. 00:20:23.02\00:20:24.35 "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:20:24.39\00:20:25.85 Jean: Yes, that's a good one too. 00:20:25.89\00:20:28.12 So you can ask for any of those books. 00:20:28.16\00:20:30.06 It's an important subject, so we have a number of resources. 00:20:30.09\00:20:33.36 Glenn in Ohio. 00:20:33.40\00:20:34.73 Glenn, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:20:34.73\00:20:37.43 Glenn: Thank you, Pastors, for taking my call. 00:20:37.47\00:20:39.50 Good evening. 00:20:39.53\00:20:40.87 My call concerns Revelation 13 and Revelation 14, and it's 00:20:40.90\00:20:46.61 about the program, the mark of the beast. 00:20:46.64\00:20:49.84 Why is the mark of the beast in the Bible? 00:20:49.88\00:20:53.95 Doug: Why is--well, God puts it in the Bible as a warning, so 00:20:53.98\00:20:58.25 that for one thing, when that time comes, we'll be prepared 00:20:58.29\00:21:03.22 and, you know, want to avoid that, because the Bible says 00:21:03.26\00:21:06.90 whoever receives the mark of the beast, the wrath of God is 00:21:06.93\00:21:10.07 poured on him, and he's going to be destroyed. 00:21:10.10\00:21:14.87 And it's basically also that what happens at the end of the 00:21:14.90\00:21:17.81 time, Glenn, with the mark of the beast and the seal of God, 00:21:17.84\00:21:21.18 is a battle between good and evil. 00:21:21.21\00:21:22.64 It's the culmination of the battle between good and evil 00:21:22.68\00:21:25.48 that goes all the way back to Cain and Abel. 00:21:25.51\00:21:27.52 Cain was a gentle shepherd, he sacrificed, he obeyed God. 00:21:27.55\00:21:32.09 His brother Cain, he rebelled, and Cain ends up getting marked 00:21:32.12\00:21:37.06 by God, and he was cursed. 00:21:37.09\00:21:39.79 And I was just reading today in, oh, was it James or Peter where 00:21:39.83\00:21:45.30 it says that "like that murderer Cain." 00:21:45.33\00:21:47.74 I think it's 2 Peter. 00:21:47.77\00:21:49.84 So, when you get to Revelation, you've got the same thing. 00:21:49.87\00:21:54.34 You've got one group is persecuting the other group 00:21:54.38\00:21:57.55 because they're worshiping according to God's will, and the 00:21:57.58\00:22:00.75 devil inspires them with anger and malice. 00:22:00.78\00:22:04.72 So God's warning us about what's going to happen. 00:22:04.75\00:22:06.72 That's why it's in the Bible. 00:22:06.76\00:22:08.26 Jean: We do have a study guide. 00:22:08.29\00:22:09.59 It's called, "The Mark of the Beast." 00:22:09.62\00:22:10.96 It's important, very important subject that you can read about 00:22:10.99\00:22:13.50 in the Bible. 00:22:13.53\00:22:14.83 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:22:14.83\00:22:16.40 If you'd like to learn more about that, the number 00:22:16.43\00:22:18.23 is 800-835-6747. 00:22:18.27\00:22:21.74 You can ask for the study guide. 00:22:21.77\00:22:23.07 It's called "The Mark of the Beast." 00:22:23.10\00:22:25.27 We've got Jim listening in Oregon. 00:22:25.31\00:22:26.78 Jim, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:22:26.81\00:22:28.88 Jim: Hello, Pastors. 00:22:28.91\00:22:30.81 Doug: Evening. 00:22:30.85\00:22:32.15 Jim: There is one peculiar word that's only in the Bible in 00:22:32.18\00:22:37.05 one place. 00:22:37.09\00:22:39.19 I think I know what it means, but I'm not sure. 00:22:39.22\00:22:43.89 It's in Revelation 1:1, the word "signified." 00:22:43.93\00:22:50.40 What does that mean? 00:22:50.43\00:22:52.30 Doug: Well, the word "signify," it mean--and actually I think 00:22:52.33\00:22:55.10 it means semaino in Greek, it means to sign-ify or it's given 00:22:55.14\00:23:01.18 in signs. 00:23:01.21\00:23:02.74 And when it says: "He sent and He signified it by His angel, 00:23:02.78\00:23:05.95 through the angel," the vision is given in signs and 00:23:05.98\00:23:09.92 apocalyptic symbols, you might say. 00:23:09.95\00:23:13.59 Yes, it means, I'm looking at the Greek definition right now. 00:23:13.62\00:23:16.42 It's rather lengthy, but it's talking about to desire a sign 00:23:16.46\00:23:21.10 or the characteristics of the sense of relating something, it 00:23:21.13\00:23:24.13 could be a shape. 00:23:24.17\00:23:25.83 But, best definition I've heard is it means to sign-ify, because 00:23:25.87\00:23:31.14 that's what, you know, you break down the word "signify," 00:23:31.17\00:23:34.48 it's sign-if-y. 00:23:34.51\00:23:36.91 And it means given in signs or symbols. 00:23:36.95\00:23:39.85 Jean: And of course, the whole book of Revelation, you find 00:23:39.88\00:23:41.88 lots of symbols in the book of Revelation. 00:23:41.92\00:23:43.82 So the Bible's telling us that if we need to understand the 00:23:43.85\00:23:47.29 book of Revelation, we need to let the Bible interpret 00:23:47.32\00:23:49.82 these symbols. 00:23:49.86\00:23:51.19 And that's why you go through the Old Testament. 00:23:51.23\00:23:52.99 A lot of the Revelation is actually quoted from the 00:23:53.03\00:23:55.96 Old Testament. 00:23:56.00\00:23:57.30 So it's given in symbols and types. 00:23:57.33\00:23:59.90 All right, thank you, Jim. 00:23:59.93\00:24:01.34 Next caller that we have is Loydene in Nebraska. 00:24:01.37\00:24:04.24 Loydene, welcome to the program. 00:24:04.27\00:24:07.41 Loydene: Well, thank you very much and good evening, Pastors. 00:24:07.44\00:24:10.55 Doug: Good evening. 00:24:10.58\00:24:12.65 Loydene: Okay, my question is on Isaiah chapter 17, verse 1, when 00:24:12.68\00:24:18.99 it's talking about Damascus. 00:24:19.02\00:24:21.46 And I have the question because I know the USA bombed Syria 00:24:21.49\00:24:27.30 today and Israel bombed Damascus, so I wanted to know if 00:24:27.30\00:24:33.50 chapter 17 has anything to do with what's going on now or was 00:24:33.54\00:24:39.84 it something that was in the past? 00:24:39.87\00:24:41.94 Doug: The vision of Isaiah against Damascus, and Isaiah, 00:24:41.98\00:24:45.45 when you start marching through, I just finished reading the book 00:24:45.48\00:24:48.58 of Isaiah, you start marching through chapter 17 and 00:24:48.62\00:24:52.09 subsequent chapters, talks about his visions that pronounce 00:24:52.12\00:24:55.92 judgment on Nineveh, on Damascus, on the Philistines, on 00:24:55.96\00:25:00.06 several countries. 00:25:00.10\00:25:01.50 They all came true, many of them during the time 00:25:01.53\00:25:04.40 of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:25:04.43\00:25:05.77 He went marching through the Middle East, and he conquered 00:25:05.80\00:25:08.77 many of these cities, and Damascus was destroyed. 00:25:08.80\00:25:12.67 Now Damascus is rebuilt, and if you look at verse 1, it says: 00:25:12.71\00:25:16.04 "The burden against Damascus. 00:25:16.08\00:25:17.45 'Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will 00:25:17.48\00:25:20.15 be a ruinous heap.'" 00:25:20.18\00:25:21.62 Well, that did happen, but it was eventually rebuilt. 00:25:21.65\00:25:24.59 Some cities that were destroyed were never rebuilt, and God--it 00:25:24.62\00:25:28.39 specifically says that Babylon, ancient Babylon, would never be 00:25:28.42\00:25:31.96 rebuilt, and it wasn't. 00:25:31.99\00:25:33.33 I think there's some tourist ruins that were rebuilt there, 00:25:33.36\00:25:36.00 but the city has not been a thriving city. 00:25:36.03\00:25:39.63 And I don't think that Isaiah here is talking about the 00:25:39.67\00:25:43.24 present conflict in Syria. 00:25:43.27\00:25:46.07 But the news certainly is interesting these days 'cause I 00:25:46.11\00:25:49.18 think the whole power structure of the Middle East is going 00:25:49.21\00:25:52.78 through a transition again. 00:25:52.81\00:25:54.65 Jean: And of course, Syria and Egypt and--Syria and Israel 00:25:54.68\00:25:58.65 have been at war many a time. 00:25:58.69\00:26:00.72 You have Syria that conquered the ten tribes of Israel, took 00:26:00.76\00:26:04.83 them off into captivity. 00:26:04.86\00:26:06.26 So yes, there's a long history between the Syrians and the 00:26:06.29\00:26:09.20 Israelites and all of those various nations in that area. 00:26:09.23\00:26:12.67 Doug: Yeah, now you'll notice the word "Syria" in Syria, and 00:26:12.70\00:26:16.30 then you'll notice in the Bible, you've got Assyria. 00:26:16.34\00:26:19.57 So, the capital of Assyria was Nineveh, the capital of Syria 00:26:19.61\00:26:24.18 was Damascus, and even back when Naaman the leper, he was the 00:26:24.21\00:26:29.02 Syrian, he came down, he was healed, so they were--they were 00:26:29.05\00:26:32.05 kind of at war, then peace and war then peace, and it's not 00:26:32.09\00:26:35.06 changed since the time of Israel, I guess, their 00:26:35.09\00:26:37.76 whole history. 00:26:37.79\00:26:40.23 Thank you. 00:26:40.26\00:26:41.56 Jean: All right, Pastor, I'm looking at the clock. 00:26:41.60\00:26:42.90 We probably don't have time to take another caller because 00:26:42.93\00:26:45.00 we're coming up on a break, but we do want to let people know 00:26:45.03\00:26:47.87 that we have all kinds of great resources at the "Amazing 00:26:47.90\00:26:51.44 Facts" website. 00:26:51.47\00:26:52.97 Doug: Yeah, absolutely. 00:26:53.01\00:26:54.34 And people sometimes think, "Well, I have to wait another 00:26:54.38\00:26:56.54 week to listen to 'Bible Answers Live,'" but you can go to 00:26:56.58\00:27:00.35 YouTube or the Amazing Facts Facebook page, and you can 00:27:00.38\00:27:03.59 listen to past programs. 00:27:03.62\00:27:05.32 There's even a place at the "Amazing Facts" website where 00:27:05.35\00:27:08.29 you can look at the particular Bible answers. 00:27:08.32\00:27:11.79 In fact, I just heard this week, we've got 8000 pages at the 00:27:11.83\00:27:16.53 "Amazing Facts" website. 00:27:16.56\00:27:18.30 So there's a, as they would say, a blizzard, a plethora, a 00:27:18.33\00:27:21.44 kaleidoscope of Bible study information there, and make sure 00:27:21.47\00:27:25.47 you check out AmazingFacts.org. 00:27:25.51\00:27:27.94 But we're not done with this program. 00:27:27.98\00:27:29.48 Coming back in just a few moments. 00:27:29.51\00:27:31.45 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:27:35.22\00:27:36.52 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:27:36.55\00:27:39.69 announcer: Amazing Facts Changed Lives. 00:27:46.96\00:27:51.20 Scarlett Varley: I'm Scarlett Varley. 00:27:58.57\00:28:00.88 I grew up in a military home. 00:28:01.01\00:28:02.88 Both my parents were in the Navy, and my mom left fairly 00:28:02.91\00:28:06.95 early, and then my dad stayed for 15 years and so he was 00:28:06.98\00:28:10.62 deployed a lot. 00:28:10.65\00:28:12.32 We would read the Bible every night together as a family, and 00:28:12.35\00:28:15.56 I mean I knew, like, that God was there and, like, I knew that 00:28:15.59\00:28:18.06 He, like, died for me but it wasn't something that, like, you 00:28:18.09\00:28:20.96 know, stuck in my head. 00:28:21.00\00:28:22.90 Any time I went to church, I never got enough information. 00:28:22.93\00:28:26.70 You know, you're there for just, like, an hour. 00:28:26.74\00:28:29.00 I was super, super hungry for knowledge and I wasn't being 00:28:29.04\00:28:31.71 given it. 00:28:31.74\00:28:33.07 Even though I accepted Christ, my faith, like, really wasn't 00:28:33.11\00:28:36.41 all that strong. 00:28:36.44\00:28:39.05 I mean, I lost my first friend in high school, you know, my 00:28:39.08\00:28:41.68 first boyfriend to suicide, and that was really hard and I 00:28:41.72\00:28:44.75 didn't understand it. 00:28:44.79\00:28:47.39 And I was just really, really depressed. 00:28:47.42\00:28:50.89 I was also, like, abused and so I was just really confused and I 00:28:50.93\00:28:55.70 was like, "Lord, why was I put in that situation where I had no 00:28:55.73\00:28:59.03 control over anything?" 00:28:59.07\00:29:01.10 I was suicidal. 00:29:01.14\00:29:02.44 I was developing an eating disorder, so like, all these 00:29:02.47\00:29:05.01 things were just coming into play. 00:29:05.04\00:29:08.68 You know, I don't feel loved, you know, that's not something 00:29:08.71\00:29:10.81 that would happen if I was loved and that's not something that 00:29:10.85\00:29:13.42 happened if maybe I must have done something wrong if I went 00:29:13.45\00:29:16.38 through that, and I just blamed myself for everything. 00:29:16.42\00:29:20.42 On the outside I was still like super-happy and outgoing and I'd 00:29:20.46\00:29:23.73 give everyone a hug and compliment them and try to put 00:29:23.76\00:29:26.26 the attention on other people. 00:29:26.29\00:29:28.40 And so people didn't know what I was going through. 00:29:28.43\00:29:32.17 I was just super-confused about life and why am I here? 00:29:32.20\00:29:35.17 Like, I don't think I have a reason to even be alive. 00:29:35.20\00:29:39.07 And I was really confused with God, like, why would You let 00:29:39.11\00:29:41.91 this happen? 00:29:41.94\00:29:43.28 Like why wouldn't You intervene? 00:29:43.31\00:29:45.11 I just wanted to change it. 00:29:45.15\00:29:46.75 I wanted to change it so bad and there was nothing I could do. 00:29:46.78\00:29:51.59 I quit choir because I was around too many people. 00:29:51.62\00:29:56.46 Choir was a big thing. 00:29:56.49\00:29:57.96 I just isolated myself because I couldn't stand being around 00:29:57.99\00:30:01.70 people and I was like, Oh well, if I don't have any friends and 00:30:01.73\00:30:05.33 if something happens to them, well, then it won't affect me 00:30:05.37\00:30:07.54 because I'm not part of their lives. 00:30:07.57\00:30:09.64 And so I was just really scared of just losing people and so I 00:30:09.67\00:30:12.94 thought if the more I push them away, the easier it would be to 00:30:12.97\00:30:16.41 just go through life. 00:30:16.44\00:30:17.91 The problem was I didn't turn to God and that's when I needed 00:30:17.95\00:30:20.82 Him most. 00:30:20.85\00:30:22.18 My sophomore year in high school we went on this thing called 00:30:22.22\00:30:25.62 Fall Weekend, so we went on a retreat for, like, the weekend 00:30:25.65\00:30:28.66 and they showed this clip of Jesus Christ on the cross and 00:30:28.69\00:30:32.79 that broke me. 00:30:32.83\00:30:34.46 I mean I was crying, crying so much, and after they showed the 00:30:34.50\00:30:39.03 clip, you know, everyone's just super-quiet and they're like, 00:30:39.07\00:30:42.07 all right go out on the campus, and we're going to do this thing 00:30:42.10\00:30:44.84 called 20 Minutes and so I'm sitting out there and I'm just, 00:30:44.87\00:30:48.48 like, praying. 00:30:48.51\00:30:50.85 I gave my life to Christ and it was just such, like, a 00:30:50.88\00:30:52.91 beautiful moment. 00:30:52.95\00:30:55.85 Right around that time, my dad found Doug Batchelor on the TV. 00:30:55.88\00:31:01.99 And so he was like, "Scarlett, come watch this," and I'm like, 00:31:02.02\00:31:04.19 "All right, like, I'll watch it." 00:31:04.23\00:31:06.59 And so we started watching it, like, all the time and he's 00:31:06.63\00:31:10.37 like, "You know, this is, like, the Bible truth." 00:31:10.40\00:31:11.80 I was like, "It definitely is." 00:31:11.83\00:31:13.34 He's like, "Scarlett, you should go to AFCOE," and I was like, 00:31:13.37\00:31:18.41 "That's not really my cup of tea." 00:31:18.44\00:31:20.98 I was a very spirited person and AFCOE was structured and I--me 00:31:21.01\00:31:27.88 as a person, I wasn't too structured. 00:31:27.92\00:31:30.49 But you know, the more I thought about AFCOE, the happier I got. 00:31:30.52\00:31:32.85 And it was, like, a 2 weeks' notice before AFCOE started. 00:31:32.89\00:31:35.79 She's like, "You got accepted." 00:31:35.82\00:31:37.16 Like, "We emailed you your letter and all this stuff," and 00:31:37.19\00:31:39.59 I was like, "Oh no, oh no, I have to pack up my entire life." 00:31:39.63\00:31:42.66 And so I'm like frantically, like, packing up everything and 00:31:42.70\00:31:46.20 me and my dad, like, drive cross country and AFCOE was not what I 00:31:46.23\00:31:50.24 expected at all. 00:31:50.27\00:31:52.07 They've definitely led me and helped me and talked to me and 00:31:52.11\00:31:55.28 taught me and just loved me, and accepted me as who I was and 00:31:55.31\00:31:58.98 just helped me grow as a person and showing me different ways of 00:31:59.01\00:32:02.25 life and just how to live, like, a better life in all sorts 00:32:02.28\00:32:05.59 of areas. 00:32:05.62\00:32:07.66 Without the help of the Lord and without, like, people who love 00:32:07.69\00:32:10.19 the Lord and love me, I wouldn't be where I am today. 00:32:10.23\00:32:14.86 Even though I didn't want Him, I, you know, I kind of shoved 00:32:14.93\00:32:17.53 Him away, He didn't let go and so I'm super-grateful. 00:32:17.57\00:32:22.80 ¤¤¤ 00:32:24.44\00:32:30.85 announcer: You're listening to "Bible Answers Live" where every 00:32:36.38\00:32:39.65 question hosts for more "Bible Answers Live." 00:33:18.66\00:33:24.27 Doug: Amen, friends, you heard the number. 00:33:24.30\00:33:26.00 Just give us a call with a Bible question and we're trying to 00:33:26.03\00:33:29.17 encourage people, even if you've never called in before, call in, 00:33:29.20\00:33:33.31 and as soon as you get through, we're going to try and put you 00:33:33.34\00:33:35.34 at the head of the line. 00:33:35.38\00:33:36.81 We get so many people calling in and they've got great questions, 00:33:36.85\00:33:39.61 but we always like to have some new first-time fresh callers. 00:33:39.65\00:33:44.79 Before we go to the phones, while our friends are picking up 00:33:44.82\00:33:47.06 the phone, we've got a couple of email questions that have 00:33:47.09\00:33:49.89 come in. 00:33:49.92\00:33:51.23 Jean: We do. 00:33:51.26\00:33:52.59 And if you'd like to send us an email question, it's easy. 00:33:52.63\00:33:54.93 The email address is just BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:33:54.96\00:34:00.10 All right, Pastor Doug, Richard is asking: "When we are going 00:34:00.14\00:34:02.37 through trials in life, how do we know if we are being led by 00:34:02.40\00:34:05.87 the Holy Spirit?" 00:34:05.91\00:34:07.24 Doug: Well, whenever you're going through trial, God may be 00:34:07.28\00:34:10.45 trying to teach you something or to reach others through you, 00:34:10.48\00:34:15.68 witnessing through the trial. 00:34:15.72\00:34:17.52 Whatever trial it might be, you can turn to God and ask for the 00:34:17.55\00:34:20.99 Spirit to guide you through the trial. 00:34:21.02\00:34:23.32 So you might be in the trial because you've done something 00:34:23.36\00:34:26.49 wrong or you took a wrong turn, but at any time along the way, 00:34:26.53\00:34:29.90 you can turn to God, and the Spirit will take that and use 00:34:29.93\00:34:33.44 you and lead you through that trial just like He led the 00:34:33.47\00:34:37.24 children of Israel with a pillar of fire through the Red Sea and 00:34:37.27\00:34:40.38 through the wilderness. 00:34:40.41\00:34:41.84 When you go through your wilderness, God's Spirit will be 00:34:41.88\00:34:45.08 there, and you've just got to be praying and commit your life to 00:34:45.11\00:34:48.22 Him every day. 00:34:48.25\00:34:49.58 Jean: Okay, and then we have another question. 00:34:49.62\00:34:52.19 Leslyn is asking: "Can you explain the process of 00:34:52.22\00:34:55.56 justification and sanctification? 00:34:55.59\00:34:58.23 Or is it sanctification and justification? 00:34:58.26\00:35:00.33 The Bible mentions it both ways." 00:35:00.36\00:35:03.06 Doug: Yeah, there's three technical terms in the process 00:35:03.10\00:35:06.23 of salvation. 00:35:06.27\00:35:07.57 You've got justification, sanctification, 00:35:07.60\00:35:11.47 and glorification. 00:35:11.51\00:35:13.44 And justification, to keep it simple, it means you come to 00:35:13.48\00:35:17.25 Jesus just as you are. 00:35:17.28\00:35:19.91 He will forgive you through His blood just as if you had 00:35:19.95\00:35:23.28 never sinned. 00:35:23.32\00:35:24.62 He'll wash you, and then out of love for Him, you follow Him, 00:35:24.65\00:35:29.09 and He teaches you to live a new kind of life. 00:35:29.12\00:35:31.13 So you can come to the Lord like the thief on the cross and turn 00:35:31.16\00:35:34.50 to Him and say, "Lord, remember me," repent of your sins, 00:35:34.56\00:35:36.83 confess your sins. 00:35:36.87\00:35:38.30 He will then forgive you, cover you with His righteousness, and 00:35:38.33\00:35:40.80 look upon you just as if you've never sinned. 00:35:40.84\00:35:43.64 Sanctification means that you're learning to walk in a newness 00:35:43.67\00:35:46.88 of life. 00:35:46.91\00:35:48.21 Glorification is ultimately when we get into glory and we have 00:35:48.24\00:35:51.38 our new bodies and we're not tempted anymore. 00:35:51.41\00:35:53.42 There's no more devil. 00:35:53.45\00:35:54.78 Jean: Okay, final question that we have, email question here, 00:35:54.82\00:35:56.99 Pastor Doug. 00:35:57.02\00:35:58.32 Annette is asking: "If God created everything in the 00:35:58.35\00:36:00.29 universe, did He create Himself?" 00:36:00.32\00:36:02.92 Doug: Well, that'd be hard to comprehend. 00:36:02.96\00:36:04.29 He would have to exist in order to create Himself. 00:36:04.33\00:36:07.36 It is a mystery, you know, and even people that are atheists 00:36:07.40\00:36:11.40 realize that the great mystery is how do you get something 00:36:11.43\00:36:14.20 from nothing. 00:36:14.24\00:36:15.57 The very enormous, complex, infinite universe that we 00:36:15.60\00:36:18.84 observe right now, to say that it came from what they call a 00:36:18.87\00:36:23.81 singularity, that means something exploding 00:36:23.85\00:36:25.88 from nothing. 00:36:25.91\00:36:27.22 There's no scientific way that can happen. 00:36:27.25\00:36:29.52 It's the same problem of saying how can you have a God that's 00:36:29.55\00:36:32.05 lived from everlasting to everlasting? 00:36:32.09\00:36:34.19 Mystery for us, but it's easier for me to believe that an 00:36:34.22\00:36:37.99 intelligent God designed the universe that we observe as to 00:36:38.03\00:36:42.43 believe that all the incredible systems and organization we see 00:36:42.46\00:36:47.14 in the world today all happened out of nothing for no purpose. 00:36:47.17\00:36:50.61 Jean: Okay, we're going to go to the phone lines. 00:36:50.64\00:36:52.17 The next caller that we have is Hector in New York. 00:36:52.21\00:36:55.01 Hector, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:36:55.04\00:36:57.28 Hector: Good evening, Pastor. I saw you in New York. 00:36:57.31\00:36:59.25 Thank you. I enjoyed the seminar. 00:36:59.28\00:37:01.15 Doug: Oh, praise the Lord, thanks for coming. 00:37:01.18\00:37:02.92 Hector: Yeah, I have a question. 00:37:02.95\00:37:04.92 In Isaiah 11:9, I'm going to see--I'm going to read 00:37:04.95\00:37:08.09 the Bible. 00:37:08.12\00:37:09.42 "The earth shall be filled--the earth shall be full of the 00:37:09.46\00:37:11.83 knowledge of the Lord as the water cover the sea." 00:37:11.86\00:37:15.46 But in Revelation 21:1: "Then I saw a new heaven and a 00:37:15.50\00:37:20.00 new earth. 00:37:20.04\00:37:21.34 So the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and 00:37:21.37\00:37:23.87 the sea was no more." 00:37:23.91\00:37:26.01 How come He didn't see no water? 00:37:26.04\00:37:28.48 Doug: Well, first of all, in Isaiah, he's saying the 00:37:28.51\00:37:31.35 knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth like the sea. 00:37:31.38\00:37:35.18 So he's using a metaphor. 00:37:35.22\00:37:36.75 We know how the sea kind of covers the earth. 00:37:36.79\00:37:38.79 Two-thirds of the world is water. 00:37:38.82\00:37:40.62 Isaiah is using that as a metaphor for heaven, that 00:37:40.66\00:37:44.43 everybody around the planet will understand God. 00:37:44.46\00:37:47.60 They'll know God. 00:37:47.66\00:37:48.93 It won't be like in the world today where so many people don't 00:37:48.96\00:37:51.27 know God. 00:37:51.30\00:37:52.63 So, the knowledge of God will blanket the new earth as the sea 00:37:52.67\00:37:56.27 covers the world today. 00:37:56.30\00:37:58.34 But when it says there's no more sea in Revelation, it doesn't 00:37:58.37\00:38:00.91 mean there's no more water, and no more large bodies of water, 00:38:00.94\00:38:05.35 because it says there's a river that's flowing from the throne 00:38:05.38\00:38:07.82 of God, and even Ezekiel talks about that river that flows from 00:38:07.85\00:38:11.29 the temple that flows out to the sea, but it says that it's fresh 00:38:11.32\00:38:15.09 water in Ezekiel, that there's-- it's all--that the trees go-- 00:38:15.12\00:38:18.69 grow beside it. 00:38:18.73\00:38:20.06 And so, if trees are growing beside it, it's not salt. 00:38:20.10\00:38:23.13 So it's telling us you're not going to have the salty water 00:38:23.16\00:38:25.23 you can't drink, it stings your eyes. 00:38:25.27\00:38:27.27 But there will be large bodies of water in heaven, but it's 00:38:27.30\00:38:30.01 probably not going to cover the earth like it does now, so that 00:38:30.04\00:38:34.28 everyone's separated. 00:38:34.31\00:38:36.21 Hope that makes sense. 00:38:36.24\00:38:37.61 Thank you. 00:38:37.65\00:38:38.95 Jean: We've got Gabriel in California. 00:38:38.98\00:38:40.32 Gabriel, welcome to the program. 00:38:40.35\00:38:43.28 Gabriel: Hi. 00:38:43.32\00:38:44.62 Doug: Hi, Gabriel. 00:38:44.65\00:38:45.99 Gabriel: Pastor Doug, why do people use Peter's vision of the 00:38:46.02\00:38:50.86 unclean animals as excuse to eat unclean food? 00:38:50.89\00:38:54.30 Doug: Why do people use Peter's vision that you find in Acts 00:38:54.36\00:38:57.40 chapter 10 as an excuse to eat unclean animals? 00:38:57.43\00:39:02.47 Well, I've heard that many times where people say, well, there's 00:39:02.50\00:39:06.74 nothing wrong with eating unclean animals, because Peter, 00:39:06.78\00:39:09.48 in Acts chapter 10, he's up on the roof praying, he's hungry, 00:39:09.51\00:39:12.98 and he has this vision of a sheet lowered from heaven full 00:39:13.01\00:39:16.52 of all kinds of unclean animals, and God says, "Arise and eat," 00:39:16.55\00:39:20.76 and Peter says, "Not so, Lord! 00:39:20.79\00:39:22.62 I've never eaten anything common or unclean." 00:39:22.66\00:39:25.93 God says, "Do not call unclean what I have cleansed." 00:39:25.96\00:39:28.50 People say, "Aha! God cleansed all the animals." 00:39:28.53\00:39:31.77 That happens three times and Peter's wondering what this 00:39:31.80\00:39:34.37 vision means. 00:39:34.40\00:39:35.64 He never eats anything from this sheet 'cause it's hard to eat a 00:39:35.67\00:39:37.74 vision, and it says he explains it later that God showed him 00:39:37.77\00:39:43.95 that He wanted him to go to the Gentiles. 00:39:43.98\00:39:46.38 Right when he has that vision, he was being invited to the 00:39:46.41\00:39:49.98 house of a Gentile. 00:39:50.02\00:39:51.92 They didn't know they were supposed to preach the gospel to 00:39:51.95\00:39:54.09 the Gentiles. 00:39:54.12\00:39:55.46 They had just been going to the lost sheep of the house of 00:39:55.49\00:39:57.19 Israel, and Peter explains the vision later. 00:39:57.23\00:39:59.83 So let's take Peter's word for it. 00:39:59.86\00:40:01.66 He said, "God has shown me through this vision, not to call 00:40:01.70\00:40:05.13 any man unclean." 00:40:05.17\00:40:07.34 M-A-N, not P-I-G. 00:40:07.37\00:40:09.40 So that's the purpose of the vision. 00:40:09.44\00:40:11.81 Some people have misapplied that to think that that means you can 00:40:11.84\00:40:14.34 eat anything that crawls, and that's not what the Bible's 00:40:14.38\00:40:17.61 teaching there. 00:40:17.65\00:40:19.05 Thanks for your question. 00:40:19.08\00:40:20.52 Appreciate that, Gabriel. 00:40:20.55\00:40:21.85 Jean: And the verse you're referring to is Acts chapter 10, 00:40:21.88\00:40:23.55 verse 28. 00:40:23.59\00:40:24.89 Doug: Thanks so much. 00:40:24.92\00:40:26.25 Jean: We got Rona in Virginia. 00:40:26.29\00:40:28.82 Rona, welcome to the program. 00:40:28.86\00:40:30.73 Rona: Oh, thank you, and may God bless you and your ministries. 00:40:30.76\00:40:35.26 Doug: Thanks so much. 00:40:35.30\00:40:36.80 Rona: My question is, where was Satan during the flood? 00:40:36.83\00:40:40.54 Was he hiding in the ark? 00:40:40.57\00:40:42.60 Doug: No, I don't think so. 00:40:42.64\00:40:44.21 I think that God's angels were in the ark and Satan doesn't get 00:40:44.24\00:40:47.84 along very well with good angels. 00:40:47.88\00:40:49.28 They had a war once. 00:40:49.31\00:40:50.91 So my assumption is that he was out in the raging elements, and 00:40:50.95\00:40:56.72 I read in one commentary that he feared for his own existence 00:40:56.75\00:41:00.79 when he saw how the whole creation had been--was in that 00:41:00.82\00:41:04.76 tremendous tempest that, you know, trees are being uprooted 00:41:04.79\00:41:11.13 and rocks are flying through the air and water's pouring from the 00:41:11.17\00:41:14.37 skies, and it was--it was the, what would you call it? 00:41:14.40\00:41:17.37 The mother of all storms. 00:41:17.41\00:41:19.47 So, no, I think Satan was out in the darkness and the raging 00:41:19.51\00:41:22.48 elements, and God's angels were in the ark protecting Noah. 00:41:22.51\00:41:25.85 Jean: All right, next caller that we have is Mandy 00:41:25.88\00:41:28.08 in Florida. 00:41:28.12\00:41:29.42 Mandy, welcome to the program. 00:41:29.45\00:41:31.65 Mandy: Hello, good evening. Doug: Evening. 00:41:31.69\00:41:36.29 Mandy: So I just got done reading Joshua chapter 7. 00:41:36.32\00:41:40.03 It starts, verse 16, and I don't know how to pronounce his name. 00:41:40.06\00:41:44.93 Is it Achan? 00:41:44.97\00:41:46.67 Doug: Yeah, that's right, Achan, like bellyaching, yeah. 00:41:46.70\00:41:51.47 Mandy: Achan, so he stole some of the spoils, some clothes and 00:41:51.51\00:41:57.81 gold and silver, and, as you know, they killed not only him, 00:41:57.85\00:42:03.25 but they took his wife and his children too and I don't 00:42:03.28\00:42:08.36 understand why first of all, he was judged so harshly. 00:42:08.39\00:42:11.79 Did he not repent? 00:42:11.83\00:42:13.66 Did he have an opportunity to repent? 00:42:13.70\00:42:16.20 And why did they have to kill the children too? 00:42:16.23\00:42:18.57 I just feel like they're--I mean, like, were they--I just 00:42:18.60\00:42:20.80 feel like they were innocent and why would they--I mean that-- 00:42:20.84\00:42:24.71 this is just like really bothering me. 00:42:24.74\00:42:27.51 Doug: No, don't let it be-- don't let it trouble you. 00:42:27.54\00:42:29.61 Just keep this in mind: that in the Hebrew, when it says they 00:42:29.64\00:42:33.62 killed the children, it doesn't mean little children. 00:42:33.65\00:42:36.08 It meant, you know, sons or daughters. 00:42:36.12\00:42:38.35 Achan could have been, you know, 40 years old, and he had adult 00:42:38.39\00:42:42.06 children, and he, first, he did have an opportunity to repent. 00:42:42.09\00:42:45.73 He didn't repent until they cast lots and the lot fell on him. 00:42:45.76\00:42:49.23 Then he finally confessed when God basically pointed him out. 00:42:49.26\00:42:53.30 So he was--he had lots of opportunity to confess, and he 00:42:53.34\00:42:56.47 waited until the last minute. 00:42:56.50\00:42:58.11 And it says that he hid this forbidden--he didn't 00:42:58.14\00:43:01.01 just steal. 00:43:01.04\00:43:02.38 God specifically said, "Do not take any of the bounty 00:43:02.41\00:43:05.51 from Jericho. 00:43:05.55\00:43:06.85 That all belongs to the Lord," and he was stealing from 00:43:06.88\00:43:08.95 God, basically. 00:43:08.98\00:43:10.39 The first city they conquered was Jericho, and because it was 00:43:10.42\00:43:13.32 the first fruits, any of the booty of war, that would be 00:43:13.36\00:43:16.62 consecrated to God. 00:43:16.66\00:43:17.99 The other cities, they got to keep it when they 00:43:18.03\00:43:19.33 conquered them. 00:43:19.36\00:43:20.70 So Achan, when he stole this, his family, now these may have 00:43:20.73\00:43:23.77 been adult children, they were conspirators with him. 00:43:23.80\00:43:27.20 They were accomplices. 00:43:27.24\00:43:28.47 They knew that he had hidden it underneath the rug in his tent. 00:43:28.50\00:43:33.24 And so they were all brought out. 00:43:33.27\00:43:36.04 Now, Moses is the one who said that the son will not die for 00:43:36.08\00:43:39.88 the sins of the father, and the father will not die for the sins 00:43:39.91\00:43:42.32 of the son. 00:43:42.35\00:43:43.69 I think Ezekiel repeats that. 00:43:43.72\00:43:45.62 So they must have been accomplices. 00:43:45.65\00:43:47.82 They knew what was going on and just keep in mind, though it's 00:43:47.86\00:43:50.86 says they're children, they may have been above the age 00:43:50.89\00:43:53.26 of accountability. 00:43:53.29\00:43:54.60 Jean: And because of his sin, Pastor Doug, there was a battle 00:43:54.63\00:43:56.63 that took place and several of the Jewish soldiers died as a 00:43:56.67\00:44:01.57 result of him hiding this and still he refused to confess it. 00:44:01.60\00:44:05.27 So he had blood on his hands to some degree because of the role 00:44:05.31\00:44:08.04 that he played in this. 00:44:08.08\00:44:09.38 Doug: Yes. 00:44:09.41\00:44:10.75 Jean: Okay, next caller that we have is Alice in New York. 00:44:10.78\00:44:12.71 Alice, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:44:12.75\00:44:16.02 Alice: Yes, hi. 00:44:16.05\00:44:17.35 I'm so happy to talk to you for the first time. 00:44:17.39\00:44:19.89 Okay, here's my question: When a person dies, a true believer, 00:44:19.92\00:44:25.13 and he gets buried, does the soul go to God, 00:44:25.16\00:44:28.00 Jesus, in heaven? 00:44:28.03\00:44:30.17 Doug: Let's tell you what goes to the Lord. 00:44:30.20\00:44:32.30 You read in Ecclesiastes chapter 12 that the dust returns, I 00:44:32.33\00:44:37.11 think it's verse 7. 00:44:37.14\00:44:38.57 The dust returns to the earth as it was, 00:44:38.61\00:44:40.81 and the spirit returns to God who gave it. 00:44:40.84\00:44:43.85 Now, there's a difference between spirit and soul. 00:44:43.88\00:44:45.65 It doesn't say the soul returns to God. 00:44:45.68\00:44:47.45 It says the spirit. 00:44:47.48\00:44:48.88 That word there, "spirit," is ruach in Hebrew, and you got to 00:44:48.92\00:44:53.69 say it in the back of your throat, ruach, and it 00:44:53.72\00:44:56.09 means breath. 00:44:56.12\00:44:58.06 The breath of life returns to God who gave it. 00:44:58.09\00:45:01.36 Now when God created Adam in the beginning, says God made Adam 00:45:01.40\00:45:04.43 out of the dust of the earth, He breathed into him the breath of 00:45:04.47\00:45:08.64 life, and Adam became a living soul. 00:45:08.67\00:45:11.64 So notice Adam doesn't become a soul until God combines the 00:45:11.67\00:45:15.91 breath of life with the body that He's made. 00:45:15.94\00:45:19.78 When a person dies, the body returns to the dust, the breath 00:45:19.81\00:45:23.82 of life returns to God. 00:45:23.85\00:45:25.19 The breath of life is not a conscious soul that's, you know, 00:45:25.22\00:45:28.59 floating around thinking, "Well, you know, when do I get my 00:45:28.62\00:45:31.33 physical body?" 00:45:31.36\00:45:32.66 The Bible says that when a person dies, they sleep until 00:45:32.69\00:45:35.66 the resurrection. 00:45:35.70\00:45:37.37 Jesus said, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps, and I go to wake 00:45:37.40\00:45:40.74 him up." 00:45:40.77\00:45:42.10 And there's about 12 resurrections in the Bible, and 00:45:42.14\00:45:44.31 all the people who are resurrected, none of them ever 00:45:44.34\00:45:47.31 comment on being conscious of anything during death. 00:45:47.34\00:45:51.48 So, it's simply saying the spirit of life goes to God who 00:45:51.51\00:45:55.92 gave it. 00:45:55.95\00:45:57.19 Jean: And there's another verse in Ezekiel chapter 18, verse 20. 00:45:57.22\00:45:59.75 It's a verse that a lot of people don't know about or 00:45:59.79\00:46:02.22 forget, and the Bible's very clear. 00:46:02.26\00:46:03.56 It says: "The soul that sins shall die." 00:46:03.59\00:46:07.23 So there you have the soul dying. 00:46:07.23\00:46:08.53 Well, if the soul dies, it can't go anywhere. 00:46:08.56\00:46:10.90 Just doesn't exist after a person dies. 00:46:10.93\00:46:13.87 Doug: I think in Revelation it says: "And all the souls that 00:46:13.90\00:46:15.87 were in the sea died." 00:46:15.90\00:46:17.27 Jean: Yeah, that's right. 00:46:17.31\00:46:18.64 Doug: So, you know, it's even telling you that fish 00:46:18.67\00:46:20.41 have souls. 00:46:20.44\00:46:21.74 That means that anything that had the breath of life died. 00:46:21.78\00:46:24.31 So, yeah. 00:46:24.35\00:46:25.71 Jean: You know, we do have a study guide. 00:46:25.75\00:46:27.08 It's called, "Are the Dead really Dead?" 00:46:27.12\00:46:28.68 And this gets into the subject and gives a lot of excellent 00:46:28.72\00:46:31.62 Bible verses. 00:46:31.65\00:46:32.95 If you'd like to receive that, Alice, or anyone listening, all 00:46:32.99\00:46:34.79 you have to do is call 800-835-6747, and ask for the 00:46:34.82\00:46:39.69 study guide. 00:46:39.73\00:46:41.00 It's called, "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:46:41.03\00:46:42.36 It's just 800-835-6747. 00:46:42.40\00:46:45.97 Ask for the study guide, "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:46:46.00\00:46:47.80 and we'll send it to you. 00:46:47.84\00:46:49.27 Or you can also dial #250 on your smartphone and you can get 00:46:49.30\00:46:53.17 it that way as well. 00:46:53.21\00:46:54.44 Doug: Pastor Ross, let me remind people, you know, we give out a 00:46:54.48\00:46:56.64 lot of resources. 00:46:56.68\00:46:57.98 The--all the resources we mention, with rare exception, 00:46:58.01\00:47:00.68 these are all free. 00:47:00.72\00:47:02.38 And I think people sometimes are afraid, they think, "Oh, there's 00:47:02.42\00:47:04.85 got to be a catch." 00:47:04.89\00:47:06.22 That "someone's going to be knocking on my door and I'm 00:47:06.25\00:47:08.19 going to have these problems now, or we're going to all of a 00:47:08.22\00:47:10.33 sudden start getting mail and--" Friends, if--we're just going 00:47:10.36\00:47:13.96 to send you the book. 00:47:14.00\00:47:15.30 Or you can download it. 00:47:15.33\00:47:16.63 And we just want you to have the truth. 00:47:16.67\00:47:18.60 And there are people that believe in what "Amazing Facts" 00:47:18.63\00:47:21.70 is doing, and they support us through the year. 00:47:21.74\00:47:23.91 We'd be happy if you want to be one of them, but we send these 00:47:23.94\00:47:26.68 books out with no obligation. 00:47:26.71\00:47:30.21 So take advantage of it. 00:47:30.25\00:47:31.58 You read these things, it'll change your life. 00:47:31.61\00:47:33.98 Jean: All right, next caller that we have is Derrick 00:47:34.02\00:47:35.62 in California. 00:47:35.65\00:47:36.95 Derrick, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:47:36.99\00:47:39.19 Derrick: Hello, Pastor. Good evening. 00:47:39.22\00:47:40.66 Doug: Evening. 00:47:40.69\00:47:42.56 Derrick: Yes, well, my question is, are all 00:47:42.59\00:47:46.19 sins forgiven? 00:47:46.23\00:47:48.36 Doug: Well, Jesus tells us in Matthew chapter 12 that "all 00:47:48.40\00:47:51.57 manner of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to the sons of men, 00:47:51.60\00:47:55.30 but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven 00:47:55.34\00:47:58.77 either in this life or the life to come." 00:47:58.81\00:48:01.24 So clearly, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not forgiven, 00:48:01.28\00:48:05.65 but I don't know, am I answering what you're asking? 00:48:05.68\00:48:09.12 Derrick: Yes, yes. 00:48:09.15\00:48:10.55 Doug: Yeah. 00:48:10.59\00:48:11.92 So, and we identify, we've got a free book that we'll send you, 00:48:11.95\00:48:14.49 Derrick, that talks about what is the unpardonable sin. 00:48:14.52\00:48:18.19 People always try to conjure up in their mind the most heinous 00:48:18.23\00:48:21.13 thing they can think of. 00:48:21.16\00:48:22.50 Is it--do you have to be a serial killer? 00:48:22.53\00:48:24.67 Is it killing your child? 00:48:24.70\00:48:26.43 Is it--some people have thought abortion was the unpardonable 00:48:26.47\00:48:29.47 sin, or maybe it's if you were to kill your parents, is that 00:48:29.50\00:48:32.74 the unpardonable sin? 00:48:32.77\00:48:34.11 They try to think of the worst thing they can think of. 00:48:34.14\00:48:36.11 And you'd be surprised what the Bible says about it, so send for 00:48:36.14\00:48:40.25 that free offer. 00:48:40.28\00:48:41.58 Jean: The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:48:41.62\00:48:44.85 You can ask for the book. 00:48:44.89\00:48:46.19 It's called, "What is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:48:46.22\00:48:48.09 And we'll send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:48:48.12\00:48:50.79 Mark in Michigan. 00:48:50.83\00:48:52.16 Mark, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:48:52.19\00:48:53.56 You're on the air. 00:48:53.60\00:48:54.86 Mark: Yeah, thank you. 00:48:54.93\00:48:56.23 Real quick, my church's state conference disciplined a member 00:48:56.26\00:48:58.27 of my local church for a non-moral issue. 00:48:58.30\00:49:00.50 No due process through our senior pastor or local church. 00:49:00.54\00:49:03.20 Our senior pastor tried to protect them both. 00:49:03.24\00:49:05.77 The conference suspended a local evangelistic ministry 00:49:05.81\00:49:10.45 until the member would be disciplined and recently our 00:49:10.48\00:49:12.55 senior pastor was fired, again with no due process. 00:49:12.58\00:49:15.65 We're still trying to reason with the conference leaders. 00:49:15.68\00:49:18.02 Should our local church hold our state conference 00:49:18.05\00:49:21.29 accountable by voting out the leaders, or by diverting tithe 00:49:21.32\00:49:25.13 elsewhere, or just follow what they say, according to Acts 5:29 00:49:25.16\00:49:29.90 and 2 Timothy 2:1 and 2? 00:49:29.93\00:49:32.07 Thank you. 00:49:32.10\00:49:33.44 Doug: Okay, that's a big question. 00:49:33.47\00:49:35.20 Well, you know, what you have happening in the New Testament, 00:49:35.24\00:49:38.44 it seemed like they did use-- they would combine prayer, and 00:49:38.47\00:49:42.88 then they would choose leaders, and, you know, they prayed and 00:49:42.91\00:49:46.68 they chose seven deacons. 00:49:46.72\00:49:48.38 Another time they cast lots to pick between the two best, and 00:49:48.42\00:49:52.12 when they chose leaders, they would respect the decisions of 00:49:52.15\00:49:54.49 the leaders. 00:49:54.52\00:49:55.92 If you're in a church that is using a democratic process where 00:49:55.96\00:49:59.29 there are conferences, and I know they have that, for 00:49:59.33\00:50:01.73 instance, in our church, in the Methodist Church and Baptist 00:50:01.76\00:50:03.87 Church, where you elect leaders and it's a 00:50:03.90\00:50:08.14 representative leadership. 00:50:08.17\00:50:10.94 Then the thing to do is if you're unhappy with that 00:50:10.97\00:50:12.84 leadership, as they do in North America, people vote in and vote 00:50:12.87\00:50:16.81 out senators, presidents, then when the time comes, you vote-- 00:50:16.85\00:50:21.45 you voice with your vote your approval or disapproval. 00:50:21.48\00:50:25.95 So, you know, I'm always very reluctant to say that you would 00:50:25.99\00:50:30.09 divert your tithe. 00:50:30.13\00:50:32.83 I think the best thing to do is for people to communicate. 00:50:32.86\00:50:35.83 Sometimes it means writing a group letter. 00:50:35.86\00:50:38.40 Or if the conference will allow a face-to-face meeting, that a 00:50:38.43\00:50:41.90 group might meet with the conference and sit down and best 00:50:41.94\00:50:44.94 thing is always to discuss things before you take some kind 00:50:44.97\00:50:48.24 of a severe action. 00:50:48.28\00:50:50.28 Jean: Okay, next caller that we have is Carla in California. 00:50:50.31\00:50:53.52 Carla, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:50:53.55\00:50:56.95 Carla: Hi, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:50:56.99\00:50:59.62 Thank you for everything that you guys do. 00:50:59.65\00:51:01.29 May God continue to bless you. 00:51:01.32\00:51:02.82 My question for today is based on 1 John 3 and Galatians 3:26, 00:51:02.86\00:51:09.30 and it is: Is it correct to call all people children of God, or 00:51:09.33\00:51:15.14 does this title or identity belong only to believers? 00:51:15.17\00:51:21.14 Doug: All right, good question. 00:51:21.18\00:51:22.78 You know, it's a kind of a mixed bag. 00:51:22.81\00:51:28.85 What I mean by that is you'll often hear people say, "Well, 00:51:28.88\00:51:31.79 all of us are children of God." 00:51:31.82\00:51:33.56 And it's true in the sense that God loves everybody. 00:51:33.59\00:51:36.19 He wants to save everybody, but Jesus made it very clear there 00:51:36.22\00:51:39.93 are some people that have accepted Christ and they are 00:51:39.96\00:51:42.76 adopted into the family through baptism. 00:51:42.80\00:51:45.77 God said to Jesus, "You are My beloved Son," and when we're 00:51:45.80\00:51:48.64 baptized, we become part of God's family. 00:51:48.67\00:51:51.61 Jesus told the religious leaders, "You're of your father 00:51:51.64\00:51:54.41 the devil," so that means not every human is a spiritual child 00:51:54.44\00:51:57.51 of God. 00:51:57.55\00:51:59.01 And you know, Jesus said, "You say you're God's children, 00:51:59.05\00:52:02.08 you're children of Abraham, but you're not, really. 00:52:02.12\00:52:05.09 Those who are of faith are children of God." 00:52:05.12\00:52:07.36 You read in 1 John chapter 3, and I think Carla was quoting 00:52:07.39\00:52:10.33 that, "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on 00:52:10.36\00:52:13.56 us, that we should be called children of God!" 00:52:13.60\00:52:16.77 So, and then Isaiah says we are sons and daughters of God, 00:52:16.80\00:52:20.24 speaking about believers. 00:52:20.27\00:52:22.10 So to be a real child of God means that you have accepted Him 00:52:22.14\00:52:26.68 as your heavenly Father and that you're submitting to Him. 00:52:26.71\00:52:30.31 Children often resemble their parents, and so if you're trying 00:52:30.35\00:52:32.91 to follow or resemble your Savior, you're a child of God. 00:52:32.95\00:52:37.09 But there are some people that are called children of the devil 00:52:37.12\00:52:40.06 in the Bible. 00:52:40.09\00:52:41.86 Jean: All right, next caller that we have is David 00:52:41.89\00:52:43.29 in Missouri. 00:52:43.32\00:52:44.66 David, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:52:44.69\00:52:48.06 David: Yes, thank you, Pastors. 00:52:48.10\00:52:50.63 I was wondering, when Jesus Christ arose from the tomb, from 00:52:50.67\00:52:58.57 that time, the angels, the two angels, were waiting in the tomb 00:52:58.61\00:53:06.05 to speaking to Mary. 00:53:06.08\00:53:09.78 Where was He? 00:53:09.82\00:53:11.49 Doug: Okay, that's a great question, because when the 00:53:11.52\00:53:13.89 disciples came and looked in the tomb, they didn't see Him; they 00:53:13.92\00:53:16.42 saw the angels. 00:53:16.46\00:53:17.79 But after they left, He appears to Mary. 00:53:17.83\00:53:19.46 So where was He? 00:53:19.49\00:53:20.83 I think Jesus, first of all, Jesus can make Himself appear 00:53:20.86\00:53:23.33 and disappear. 00:53:23.37\00:53:24.73 He can close eyes and open eyes. 00:53:24.77\00:53:26.50 You see in, was it Luke chapter 24, on the road to Emmaus, He 00:53:26.53\00:53:32.31 basically blinded the eyes of the disciples so they didn't 00:53:32.34\00:53:34.81 recognize Him until the appropriate moment when He 00:53:34.84\00:53:37.45 blessed the bread. 00:53:37.48\00:53:39.38 So, you know, Jesus may have just made Himself invisible. 00:53:39.41\00:53:44.32 Could have been standing by a tree. 00:53:44.35\00:53:45.99 I don't know where He was. 00:53:46.02\00:53:47.32 He hadn't ascended to heaven yet, so He was probably there 00:53:47.36\00:53:49.42 watching everything. 00:53:49.46\00:53:50.76 He waited until they had all left but Mary, who stood outside 00:53:50.79\00:53:53.66 the tomb alone weeping, and He chooses to first reveal Himself 00:53:53.70\00:53:57.57 to her. 00:53:57.60\00:53:58.93 But I don't know, Pastor Ross, the Bible doesn't say, you know, 00:53:58.97\00:54:02.07 was He hiding behind a rock or where He was. 00:54:02.10\00:54:03.67 I just figured He made Himself unseen during that brief 00:54:03.71\00:54:08.91 interval and it's not--we're talking about maybe 20 minutes, 00:54:08.94\00:54:11.95 half an hour, it's not long. 00:54:11.98\00:54:13.58 Jean: And then we also read later on where Jesus did appear 00:54:13.62\00:54:16.05 to the disciples and He appeared suddenly in the room. 00:54:16.08\00:54:20.22 So for a period of time they couldn't see Him in the 00:54:20.26\00:54:22.12 room and then suddenly He appeared, so. 00:54:22.16\00:54:23.93 Doug: Good point. 00:54:23.96\00:54:25.26 So He could make himself disappear. 00:54:25.29\00:54:26.63 Jean: That's right. Okay, thank you. 00:54:26.66\00:54:29.26 Carol in Arizona. 00:54:29.30\00:54:30.63 Carol, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:54:30.67\00:54:32.67 Carol: Oh, thank you for taking my call. 00:54:32.70\00:54:35.60 I just enjoy your ministry. 00:54:35.64\00:54:39.07 My question is: Where in the Bible does it say, chapter and 00:54:39.11\00:54:46.21 verse, that it took Noah 120 years to build the ark? 00:54:46.25\00:54:53.52 I can't find it. 00:54:53.56\00:54:54.92 Doug: All right, the closest you're going to get is where you 00:54:54.96\00:54:57.36 read in Genesis 6, and you'll read in verse 3: "And the Lord 00:54:57.39\00:55:04.50 said, 'My spirit will not strive with man forever, for he is 00:55:04.53\00:55:07.97 indeed flesh; yet his days will be a hundred and twenty years.'" 00:55:08.00\00:55:12.04 Now, it's telling us that when the sons of God, meaning the 00:55:12.07\00:55:15.34 children of Seth, intermarried with the daughters of Cain, that 00:55:15.38\00:55:19.55 through those intermarriages they lost their distinct 00:55:19.58\00:55:22.22 holiness, and wickedness increased in the earth, so that 00:55:22.25\00:55:25.69 God was sorry that He made man, the thoughts of his heart were 00:55:25.72\00:55:28.62 only evil continually. 00:55:28.66\00:55:30.56 And so you've got this point where God is giving a warning 00:55:30.59\00:55:35.43 that they're going to have about 120 years before the end comes. 00:55:35.46\00:55:39.60 Then that's also referred to in Peter, where He says in 2 Peter 00:55:39.63\00:55:42.87 chapter 3 that "in the days of Noah, while the ark was 00:55:42.90\00:55:46.51 being prepared." 00:55:46.54\00:55:48.08 And so it doesn't mention 120 years there, but it says his 00:55:48.11\00:55:51.85 spirit was striving with people. 00:55:51.88\00:55:54.52 That's where you're going to get the 120 years. 00:55:54.55\00:55:56.38 So from that time, God tells Noah to, you know, you go into 00:55:56.42\00:56:00.56 chapter 7, he calls Noah, and God--Noah begins to build the 00:56:00.59\00:56:04.49 ark, and then the flood comes, and most scholars believe that 00:56:04.53\00:56:07.73 it's about 120 years. 00:56:07.76\00:56:09.73 His spirit was just going to strive with humanity to repent 00:56:09.76\00:56:12.90 of their sins before the flood would come. 00:56:12.93\00:56:15.80 Jean: Well, here's a quick question, Pastor Doug. 00:56:15.84\00:56:17.44 David in Missouri, real quick, what's your question? 00:56:17.47\00:56:20.38 David: Hey, okay, we'll make it quick. 00:56:20.41\00:56:22.81 Cain, where did his wife come from? 00:56:22.84\00:56:25.45 Doug: All right, good question. 00:56:25.48\00:56:26.88 Says: "Cain took his wife and went east to Eden." 00:56:26.92\00:56:30.42 Where did he come from? 00:56:30.45\00:56:31.79 It just says Adam and Eve had Seth and Abel, and Abel died. 00:56:31.82\00:56:36.52 They had brothers and sisters. 00:56:36.56\00:56:37.86 It says in Genesis chapter 5: "Cain married one of 00:56:37.89\00:56:41.53 his sisters." 00:56:41.56\00:56:44.97 Jean: All right, very good. 00:56:45.00\00:56:46.33 We've got another caller, Gary in Washington. 00:56:46.37\00:56:48.57 Gary, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:56:48.60\00:56:50.31 Gary: Hello. 00:56:50.34\00:56:52.37 Doug: Hey, Gary, we got just a minute. 00:56:52.41\00:56:53.78 Your question? 00:56:53.81\00:56:57.05 Gary: I want to know how it happened that when Adam and Eve 00:56:57.08\00:57:03.02 sinned, somehow, all of humanity instantly became a sinner. 00:57:03.05\00:57:11.39 Doug: All right, that's a great question. 00:57:11.43\00:57:14.46 It's almost like something happened in our DNA. 00:57:14.50\00:57:17.47 Adam used to be, at Creation, motivated by love. 00:57:17.50\00:57:20.77 God created Adam and Eve to be motivated by love. 00:57:20.80\00:57:23.84 After sin, something changed in our natures where the compass 00:57:23.87\00:57:27.48 needle was broken and it was pointing in the 00:57:27.51\00:57:29.31 opposite direction. 00:57:29.34\00:57:30.71 And instead of humans being motivated by love for God and 00:57:30.75\00:57:33.62 love for our fellow man, we became motivated by selfishness, 00:57:33.65\00:57:37.89 and that really is the disease that's passed on to all 00:57:37.92\00:57:40.39 humanity, is that we love ourselves. 00:57:40.42\00:57:43.69 The biggest battle that Jesus ever fought was there in the 00:57:43.73\00:57:46.90 Garden of Gethsemane when He was praying before He went to the 00:57:46.93\00:57:50.10 cross, and He said, "Not My will; Thy will be done." 00:57:50.13\00:57:54.54 Jesus said, "Deny yourself. 00:57:54.57\00:57:56.27 Take up the cross and follow Me, and you'll be in the kingdom." 00:57:56.30\00:57:59.44 That's the big question, friends, is taking up the cross 00:57:59.47\00:58:01.94 and following Jesus. 00:58:01.98\00:58:03.35 God willing, we'll talk about it more next week. 00:58:03.38\00:58:05.88 Thanks for listening to "Bible Answers Live," and check out 00:58:05.91\00:58:08.05 the website. 00:58:08.08\00:58:11.45 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:58:11.49\00:58:14.09 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:58:14.12\00:58:17.79 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:58:17.83\00:58:21.83 a faith-based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:58:21.86\00:58:26.23
