00:00:51.35\00:00:53.75 Redwood trees in California hold the records for both the tallest 00:00:53.78\00:00:58.12 and the largest trees in the world. 00:00:58.15\00:01:00.76 One coastal redwood is 380 feet tall. 00:01:00.79\00:01:04.73 And the General Sherman Sequoia near Yosemite contains 00:01:04.76\00:01:08.20 an incredible 52,500 cubic feet. 00:01:08.23\00:01:12.27 Because of heavy logging, redwoods are now classified 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.54 as endangered. 00:01:15.57\00:01:16.91 Sadly, 95% of California's original old growth redwoods 00:01:16.94\00:01:21.44 are gone. 00:01:21.48\00:01:22.84 Yet at the same time, they were being cut down in California, 00:01:22.88\00:01:26.15 they were taking root in another land. 00:01:26.18\00:01:28.88 Because they are naturally resistant to rot and fire, 00:01:28.92\00:01:31.89 Sequoia Redwoods were first imported to the UK as seeds and 00:01:31.92\00:01:35.56 seedlings in 1853. 00:01:35.59\00:01:37.46 At the time, the trees became a symbol of wealth and power in 00:01:37.49\00:01:41.00 the Victoria era Britain. 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.20 Redwoods were increasingly used to line the roads and 00:01:43.23\00:01:46.40 landscape parks. 00:01:46.43\00:01:47.90 The trees seemed to thrive in the rainy climate and the fad 00:01:47.94\00:01:51.21 continued for 100 years. 00:01:51.24\00:01:53.71 Now, the giant redwood trees that are endangered in 00:01:53.74\00:01:56.95 California are thriving in the UK. 00:01:56.98\00:01:58.88 A survey has recently shown there are currently some 500,000 00:01:58.91\00:02:04.82 redwoods across the British countryside. 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.29 By comparison, did you know there's only about 80,000 mature 00:02:07.32\00:02:10.69 giant redwoods in their native range of California? 00:02:10.73\00:02:14.36 You know, the Bible talks about transplants that are flourishing 00:02:14.40\00:02:18.50 in a foreign environment. 00:02:18.53\00:02:20.57 Jean Ross: That's right, Pastor Doug. 00:02:20.60\00:02:21.90 You know, you spoke about redwoods, Sequoias, giant 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.87 Sequoias, I know you have and I have, we've been there to close 00:02:23.91\00:02:27.28 to Yosemite where they have a grove of the giant 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.88 Sequoia trees. 00:02:29.91\00:02:31.21 It is humbling just standing next to one of these giant trees 00:02:31.25\00:02:33.75 and looking up. 00:02:33.78\00:02:35.12 It's truly an amazing tree. 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.45 It's one of my favorite trees and, of course, you always 00:02:37.49\00:02:40.26 associate these giant trees with northern California, with the 00:02:40.29\00:02:43.69 climate and the history and all the rest of it. 00:02:43.73\00:02:45.89 It is interesting though that you have the same tree now that 00:02:45.93\00:02:48.43 is flourishing far away from northern California, all the way 00:02:48.46\00:02:52.10 over in Great Britain. 00:02:52.13\00:02:53.77 That's right. 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.14 And, you know, folks might wonder, "Well, Pastor Doug, you 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.11 usually tie these Amazing Facts to some biblical truth. 00:02:57.14\00:02:59.91 Where are you going to go with this?" 00:02:59.94\00:03:01.91 You know, folks, you might be surprised to know that for 00:03:01.94\00:03:05.98 almost 2,000 years, Jehovah revealed Himself and worked 00:03:06.01\00:03:10.39 through and operated through the Jewish nation, Israel. 00:03:10.42\00:03:14.56 But after the time of Christ and Jesus said this would happen, 00:03:14.59\00:03:18.73 the gospel exploded from Pentecost where all the Jews 00:03:18.76\00:03:22.03 had gathered. 00:03:22.06\00:03:23.37 They took the gospel back to their respective countries. 00:03:23.40\00:03:25.70 And in one century, the majority of people now believing in 00:03:25.73\00:03:29.70 Jehovah were no longer Jewish. 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.47 The religion of the true God had spread far beyond the borders 00:03:32.51\00:03:37.88 of Israel. 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.21 And so that, you know, today, the amount of people reading 00:03:39.25\00:03:42.98 the Bible, I think there's 16 million Jews in 00:03:43.02\00:03:46.82 the world, approximately. 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.52 I think half of them are in Israel approximately, and 00:03:48.56\00:03:51.89 the other half are in the US. 00:03:51.93\00:03:53.26 Well, I should say, you know, 45% in Israel, 45% in the US and 00:03:53.29\00:03:58.80 the others are scattered around the world. 00:03:58.83\00:04:00.87 But there's 2 billion people in the world that believe the 00:04:00.90\00:04:05.11 Bible, that are Christians, and it spread far beyond-- 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.98 the religion that began in Israel has spread far beyond 00:04:09.01\00:04:12.15 the borders. 00:04:12.18\00:04:13.52 It's interesting that you consider the Bible tells us that 00:04:13.55\00:04:17.55 Christianity is really an extension of Judaism. 00:04:17.59\00:04:21.76 You know, Paul said this was going to happen. 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.59 You can read in Romans 9, verse 25: "As He says in Hosea," Paul 00:04:23.63\00:04:28.80 is quoting the Old Testament, "I will call them My people, who 00:04:28.83\00:04:32.13 were not My people, and her beloved, who was not beloved. 00:04:32.17\00:04:35.90 And it will come to pass in the place where it was said of them, 00:04:35.94\00:04:38.94 'You are not My people,' there they shall be called the sons of 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.11 the living God." 00:04:42.14\00:04:43.48 And so the gospel then went to the Gentiles. 00:04:43.51\00:04:45.98 And now you've got this whole nation of spiritual Jews that 00:04:46.01\00:04:49.32 are scattered around the world. 00:04:49.35\00:04:51.59 Jean: And we have a free offer that talks about that. 00:04:51.62\00:04:53.86 People often ask, "Well, what about Israel in Bible prophecy? 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.89 What does the Bible teach?" 00:04:56.93\00:04:58.23 We've got a book. 00:04:58.26\00:04:59.59 It's called "Spiritual Israel" and it explores this 00:04:59.63\00:05:01.60 very subject. 00:05:01.63\00:05:02.93 Who is Israel, at least spiritual Israel today? 00:05:02.96\00:05:05.30 We'll be happy to send you the book. 00:05:05.33\00:05:06.94 The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:05:06.97\00:05:10.47 That is our resource phone line. 00:05:10.51\00:05:11.81 You can just ask for the book by name, "Spiritual Israel." 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.64 You can also get it by simply dialing #250 on your 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.58 phone, #250. 00:05:18.61\00:05:20.28 Say "Bible Answers Live" and then say "Spiritual Israel." 00:05:20.32\00:05:24.09 And we'll send you that book, a digital copy to the book. 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.86 If you have a Bible question, our phone line here to the 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.89 studio is 800-463-7297. 00:05:28.92\00:05:33.06 That'll bring your call in to our phone operators. 00:05:33.09\00:05:35.93 Again, it's 800-463-7297. 00:05:35.96\00:05:40.37 Well, before we go to the phone lines, Pastor Doug, we always 00:05:40.40\00:05:42.44 start with prayer. 00:05:42.47\00:05:43.77 Let's do that now. 00:05:43.81\00:05:45.14 Dear Father, what a joy it is to be able to spend time in Your 00:05:45.17\00:05:48.61 Word once again and open up the scriptures and we just pray for 00:05:48.64\00:05:52.08 Your Spirit. 00:05:52.11\00:05:53.45 We know the Bible is Your book, Lord. 00:05:53.48\00:05:54.78 Be with those who are listening wherever they might be, 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.15 if they're in the car, at home, and just lead us into a clearer 00:05:56.18\00:05:59.22 understanding of the Bible. 00:05:59.25\00:06:00.62 We thank You in Jesus's name, amen. 00:06:00.66\00:06:03.29 Doug: Amen. 00:06:03.32\00:06:04.66 Jean: All right, we are ready for our first call. 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.36 We got Gary in Illinois. 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.40 Gary, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:06:08.43\00:06:11.97 Gary: Thank you. 00:06:12.00\00:06:13.30 In Exodus 19, verse 16, it says: "On the morning of the third 00:06:13.34\00:06:17.94 day, there were thunders, lightnings, and a thick cloud on 00:06:17.97\00:06:21.68 the mountain; and a very loud trumpet blast so that all the 00:06:21.71\00:06:25.88 people in the camp trembled." 00:06:25.91\00:06:28.08 So my question is, is God preparing us for a significant 00:06:28.12\00:06:31.99 event as He did Israel when He was giving them the 00:06:32.02\00:06:35.56 ten commandments? 00:06:35.59\00:06:36.89 Today, there are dozens of videos with trumpets sounding 00:06:36.93\00:06:42.53 in the sky. 00:06:42.56\00:06:43.87 People are asking, "What are those trumpets," you know? 00:06:43.90\00:06:47.44 And so that's my question. 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.37 Doug: All right. 00:06:49.40\00:06:50.71 Hey, thank you. 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.07 Well, it is true that there are trumpets compared with the 00:06:52.11\00:06:53.61 last days. 00:06:53.64\00:06:55.38 Not only do you have seven trumpets in Revelation that span 00:06:55.41\00:06:59.65 the course of military history, that of the Christian era, but 00:06:59.68\00:07:04.75 you know, there may be some trumpets that are going to be 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.69 blowing right at the end of time, sort of like when the-- 00:07:07.72\00:07:11.23 before Jericho fell, Joshua sent the priests out ahead of the 00:07:11.26\00:07:16.30 army blowing seven trumpets. 00:07:16.33\00:07:17.67 So of course, the Lord's going to descend from heaven with the 00:07:17.70\00:07:20.57 voice of the archangel and the trump of God. 00:07:20.60\00:07:23.04 Now the trumpets that you're hearing people talk about on 00:07:23.07\00:07:26.41 YouTubes, I would have to say I've not seen those, so there 00:07:26.44\00:07:30.45 may be signs and things happening in the heavens. 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.68 It says that in Luke, no question about that. 00:07:32.71\00:07:36.18 Jean: Definitely seems our skies are getting more noisy just with 00:07:36.22\00:07:38.89 all of the travel taking place and different types of aircraft 00:07:38.92\00:07:42.09 and planes. 00:07:42.12\00:07:43.46 I know we hear helicopters fly over all the time and jets. 00:07:43.49\00:07:46.46 Becomes pretty noisy, just listening up to what's happening 00:07:46.49\00:07:49.30 in the sky. 00:07:49.33\00:07:50.63 Haven't heard a trumpet though. 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.00 But you know, there's a lot of noise. 00:07:52.03\00:07:53.77 Doug: Just think about all of the radio signals and cell phone 00:07:53.80\00:07:58.94 signals and television signals that are going through the air 00:07:58.97\00:08:03.21 at this moment. 00:08:03.24\00:08:04.55 It's amazing that we're not all microwaved with all that. 00:08:04.58\00:08:08.15 Jean: All right, thank you, Gary. 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.48 We've got Brittany listening in California. 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.09 Brittany, welcome to the program. 00:08:11.12\00:08:12.99 Brittany: Yeah, my question is why did Peter cut off the ear of 00:08:13.02\00:08:18.19 Malchus when he knew that Jesus was able to heal people? 00:08:18.23\00:08:24.07 Doug: Well, I think that the apostles were thinking that 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.97 Jesus was going to do something to set Himself up as an 00:08:29.00\00:08:32.87 earthly king. 00:08:32.91\00:08:34.51 And that's why James and John said, "When You're in Your 00:08:34.54\00:08:37.41 kingdom, can we sit on the right and left of Your throne?" 00:08:37.45\00:08:40.88 They were picturing Jesus, not as reigning from heaven, not as 00:08:40.92\00:08:45.39 a spiritual kingdom. 00:08:45.42\00:08:46.86 And in fact, even after the resurrection, I think Philip 00:08:46.89\00:08:49.72 said, "Lord, will You at this time establish the kingdom?" 00:08:49.76\00:08:53.83 And so when they came to arrest Jesus, Peter maybe thought, 00:08:53.86\00:08:56.90 well, this is going to be the nuclear moment that's going to 00:08:56.93\00:09:01.24 change everything and that they were supposed to take up arms. 00:09:01.27\00:09:05.04 So I don't think that they thought Jesus was going to go 00:09:05.07\00:09:08.14 through the battlefield, healing everybody. 00:09:08.18\00:09:09.78 I think they thought that this was a pivotal moment when they 00:09:09.81\00:09:12.95 would fight and Jesus would assert His power to make 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.22 Himself king. 00:09:16.25\00:09:17.55 Jean: You know, there's several times recorded in scripture 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.09 where the mob and there was times when the disciples thought 00:09:19.12\00:09:22.42 that they needed to force Christ, so to speak, to be king, 00:09:22.46\00:09:27.10 to take on some position when He fed the 5,000. 00:09:27.13\00:09:30.17 And there was people felt, you know, we need to make Him king 00:09:30.20\00:09:32.87 and I'm sure the disciples were part of that plot and Jesus 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.44 finally sent them on a ship to cross the lake. 00:09:35.47\00:09:38.91 And here, maybe like you say, the disciples might think, well, 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.31 the time has come. 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.68 You know, it's the Passover, everyone's coming to Jerusalem. 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.61 He already entered the city riding on the back of a donkey 00:09:44.65\00:09:47.62 and that was connected with a king. 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.55 And I don't know though if Peter was really thinking right there; 00:09:50.59\00:09:53.56 he just responded. 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.16 He just reacted. 00:09:55.19\00:09:56.49 Doug: Yeah, no one had ever really laid hands on Jesus to 00:09:56.52\00:09:58.39 arrest Him before. 00:09:58.43\00:09:59.76 And so that's why before they went to the dinner, they said, 00:09:59.79\00:10:03.83 "Lord, we have two swords," and He said, "You don't get it." 00:10:03.87\00:10:06.74 He's had enough of this. 00:10:06.77\00:10:08.10 Anyway, all right. 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.47 Well, thank you, Brittany. 00:10:09.50\00:10:10.81 I appreciate your question. 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.17 Jean: Yeah, we've got Tahaih listening in New York. 00:10:12.21\00:10:13.51 Tahaih, welcome to the program. 00:10:13.54\00:10:15.64 Tahaih: Hello. 00:10:15.68\00:10:17.01 My question is, are dinosaurs real? 00:10:17.05\00:10:21.35 Doug: Yes, dinosaurs are real. 00:10:21.38\00:10:24.92 When I grew up--you sound like a young man. 00:10:24.95\00:10:27.42 I grew up across the street from the Museum of Natural History in 00:10:27.46\00:10:32.96 New York City and I used to go over there and I wanted to be a 00:10:32.99\00:10:36.26 paleontologist and I'd look at all the dinosaur bones and, 00:10:36.30\00:10:40.10 yeah, they were very real. 00:10:40.14\00:10:42.20 The dinosaurs just lived contemporaneous, that means at 00:10:42.24\00:10:45.27 the same time, as people. 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.18 And so, there's been a lot of confusion about the 00:10:48.21\00:10:51.38 dating methods. 00:10:51.41\00:10:52.71 Recently, they found dinosaur bones, the thigh bone of a 00:10:52.75\00:10:55.82 tyrannosaurus rex that still had soft tissue. 00:10:55.85\00:10:59.42 It certainly could not be 65 million years old. 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.32 And the person who discovered that was, you know, an 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.53 atheist paleontologist. 00:11:05.56\00:11:07.03 They admitted that he had no religious agenda. 00:11:07.03\00:11:10.53 So, yeah, the dinosaurs did live on the Ark of Noah. 00:11:10.57\00:11:14.27 They didn't take great big, full-grown brontosauruses 00:11:14.30\00:11:17.67 or triceratops or stegosauruses. 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.07 They probably took small ones and they could have taken eggs 00:11:19.11\00:11:23.24 or babies. 00:11:23.28\00:11:24.61 So, I think a lot of the animals when they put them in the ark, 00:11:24.65\00:11:26.61 they didn't need to take full grown ones. 00:11:26.65\00:11:28.95 Jean: And of course, after the flood then, the environment 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.95 changed to the point where these animals couldn't 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.56 flourish anymore. 00:11:33.59\00:11:34.89 Doug: Yeah, that or people like Nimrod, the hunter, killed 00:11:34.92\00:11:36.69 them off. 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.03 But we still have great reptiles. 00:11:38.06\00:11:39.39 You know, there's Komodo dragons and there's some big crocodiles 00:11:39.43\00:11:42.40 in the Nile and a dinosaur is just a very large reptile that's 00:11:42.43\00:11:46.53 extinct, but we still have big reptiles. 00:11:46.57\00:11:49.24 Jean: Okay, we got Manuel listening in Illinois. 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.24 Manuel, welcome to the program. 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.24 Manuel: Hello. 00:11:53.27\00:11:54.58 My question is, what's the best explanation or the clearest 00:11:54.61\00:11:57.88 interpretation of Colossians 2:16? 00:11:57.91\00:12:01.15 Doug: All right, well, let me read this for our friends that 00:12:01.18\00:12:03.02 are listening. 00:12:03.05\00:12:04.29 Colossians chapter 2, verse 16: "So let no one judge you in food 00:12:04.32\00:12:08.36 or in drink, or regarding a festival or new moon or 00:12:08.39\00:12:12.26 Sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the 00:12:12.29\00:12:16.50 substance is of Christ." 00:12:16.53\00:12:18.23 Now some people have read Colossians 2:16 and they're 00:12:18.27\00:12:20.64 saying, "Oh, you don't need to worry about the Sabbath. 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.10 It says right there: 'Don't let anyone judge you regarding the 00:12:23.14\00:12:25.34 new moon or Sabbaths.'" 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.81 Well, the key is, it says, "Sabbaths which are a shadow." 00:12:26.84\00:12:31.58 There were Sabbaths that were created after sin. 00:12:31.61\00:12:35.12 There were annual Sabbaths that were shadows pointing to Christ. 00:12:35.15\00:12:39.39 It's not talking here about the Sabbath day is singular. 00:12:39.42\00:12:43.26 It's not plural. 00:12:43.29\00:12:44.69 It's a day that goes back before there was sin. 00:12:44.73\00:12:48.00 Right there at the beginning on the seventh day of creation, God 00:12:48.03\00:12:51.43 made the Sabbath day and Jesus said He made it for man, not for 00:12:51.47\00:12:55.30 Jews, but for humanity. 00:12:55.34\00:12:56.97 Christ said the Sabbath is made for man. 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.01 That's anthropos like anthropology, the human race. 00:12:59.04\00:13:02.34 Everyone needs a Sabbath, everyone needs a day of rest. 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.45 The Jewish annual Sabbaths were nailed to the cross and this is 00:13:05.48\00:13:09.88 what Colossians 2:16 is talking about. 00:13:09.92\00:13:12.32 Has nothing to do with the weekly day of worship or rest. 00:13:12.35\00:13:16.22 Jean: You know, we do have a study guide called "The Last Day 00:13:16.26\00:13:18.13 of History," and it talks about the Sabbath and what the Bible 00:13:18.16\00:13:21.06 has to say about it. 00:13:21.10\00:13:22.40 We'll be able to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:13:22.43\00:13:24.27 The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:13:24.30\00:13:28.20 You can ask for the study guide. 00:13:28.24\00:13:29.54 It's called "The Last Day of History." 00:13:29.57\00:13:32.11 You can also dial #250 and ask for it by name. 00:13:32.14\00:13:35.74 You can also ask to sign up for free to the Amazing Facts Bible 00:13:35.78\00:13:39.31 School and you actually go through all of these lessons, 00:13:39.35\00:13:41.92 dealing with a number of very important Bible topics. 00:13:41.95\00:13:44.75 So you can also ask when you call to be enrolled in the free 00:13:44.79\00:13:47.76 Amazing Facts Bible School. 00:13:47.79\00:13:49.86 Next caller that we have is Isaiah in Texas. 00:13:49.89\00:13:52.33 Isaiah, welcome to the program. 00:13:52.36\00:13:53.90 Isaiah: Good evening, Pastors. 00:13:53.93\00:13:55.40 Thank you both for what you do. 00:13:55.43\00:14:00.07 My question tonight is how can we trust denominational writings 00:14:00.10\00:14:08.38 and, as an example, of Ellen White? 00:14:08.41\00:14:12.71 Doug: Well, if you read in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and 00:14:12.75\00:14:15.32 chapter 14, Paul makes it very clear that the gift of prophecy 00:14:15.35\00:14:20.56 is still something that God uses. 00:14:20.59\00:14:22.76 When you look in Revelation chapter 12, it says in verse 17, 00:14:22.79\00:14:27.00 that the dragon, the devil, is wroth with the remnant of her 00:14:27.03\00:14:30.77 seed, the church. 00:14:30.80\00:14:32.47 He goes, he's wroth with a woman. 00:14:32.50\00:14:34.00 He goes to make war with the remnant of her seed that has-- 00:14:34.04\00:14:37.87 that keeps the commandments of God and has the testimony 00:14:37.91\00:14:40.21 of Jesus. 00:14:40.24\00:14:41.54 If you look in Revelation 19:10, it says the testimony of Jesus 00:14:41.58\00:14:44.71 is the spirit of prophecy. 00:14:44.75\00:14:46.85 And so, the law and the prophets, God, you know, it goes 00:14:46.88\00:14:50.95 all the way through history. 00:14:50.99\00:14:52.85 You read in Joel chapter 2, "It'll come to pass in the last 00:14:52.89\00:14:56.12 days, I'll pour out My spirit on all flesh. 00:14:56.16\00:14:58.29 Your sons and your daughters will dream dreams, 00:14:58.33\00:15:00.93 they'll prophesy." 00:15:00.96\00:15:02.93 And that's also quoted in Acts chapter 2--so does God still 00:15:02.96\00:15:07.14 inspire people and speak through people in the last days? 00:15:07.17\00:15:12.17 And I think, you know, unequivocally, the Bible 00:15:12.21\00:15:14.21 says, Yes. 00:15:14.24\00:15:15.68 Now, does that mean that that is to be added to the scripture or 00:15:15.71\00:15:18.88 put on the same level as the scripture? 00:15:18.91\00:15:20.82 No, categorically no. 00:15:20.85\00:15:23.32 The scriptures are complete. 00:15:23.35\00:15:25.52 But there's a distinction. 00:15:25.55\00:15:26.89 To say that God does not inspire or that God does not speak 00:15:26.92\00:15:30.83 through people is a different issue. 00:15:30.86\00:15:33.76 And so, I believe Ellen White fits in that category of someone 00:15:33.80\00:15:39.43 who is inspired and for those out there who don't know who 00:15:39.47\00:15:42.10 that is and would question that, I'd say taste and see 00:15:42.14\00:15:45.64 for yourself. 00:15:45.67\00:15:47.01 You know, read a book like "Steps to Christ" and see if it 00:15:47.04\00:15:49.94 doesn't support biblical truth. 00:15:49.98\00:15:52.85 And there's a biblical test. 00:15:52.88\00:15:54.62 I think we got a lesson that talks about that. 00:15:54.65\00:15:56.85 There's a series of biblical tests that you can apply to find 00:15:56.89\00:16:00.22 out if a person meets the criteria of what is the 00:16:00.26\00:16:02.89 definition of prophecy. 00:16:02.92\00:16:04.73 Jean: And I think the point you make is important when it comes 00:16:04.76\00:16:06.73 to anyone who claims to be a prophet or have a message from 00:16:06.76\00:16:09.83 God, it needs to be tested by the Bible. 00:16:09.86\00:16:12.13 The Bible says to the law and to the testimony, if they speak not 00:16:12.17\00:16:14.54 according to this, there is no light in them. 00:16:14.57\00:16:16.91 So the Bible needs to be the test. 00:16:16.94\00:16:19.01 But having said that, we need to recognize that God does still 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.21 speak through people, especially tp guide in 00:16:22.24\00:16:24.48 certain circumstances. 00:16:24.51\00:16:25.85 We do have a study guide. 00:16:25.88\00:16:27.18 It's called, "Does God Inspire Psychics--Astrologists 00:16:27.22\00:16:30.39 and Psychics?" 00:16:30.42\00:16:31.72 That is one of our study guides and deals with the subject. 00:16:31.75\00:16:34.59 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:16:34.62\00:16:36.46 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:16:36.49\00:16:40.40 You can also dial #250 on your phone. 00:16:40.43\00:16:43.03 Ask for the study guide, "Does God Inspire Psychics?" 00:16:43.06\00:16:45.93 That's probably the--that's all they'll need to be able to find 00:16:45.97\00:16:48.60 that lesson. 00:16:48.64\00:16:49.97 We'll be happy to send it to you. 00:16:50.01\00:16:51.31 And read it and share it with somebody else. 00:16:51.34\00:16:53.51 Next caller that we have is Shannon, listening in Georgia. 00:16:53.54\00:16:55.98 Shannon, welcome to the program. 00:16:56.01\00:16:57.65 Shannon: Hi, my question is on Acts 23, verse 6, and it says 00:16:57.68\00:17:04.32 that Paul's parents were both Jews, but then it says that he 00:17:04.35\00:17:08.89 was born of Pharisees. 00:17:08.92\00:17:11.03 Could you please explain that? 00:17:11.06\00:17:13.70 Doug: Yeah, well, the Pharisees were all Jewish. 00:17:13.73\00:17:17.10 So there's no conflict there. 00:17:17.13\00:17:18.90 Matter of fact, I can't think of a Pharisee that wasn't 00:17:18.93\00:17:21.64 also Jewish. 00:17:21.67\00:17:23.00 By the way, the Hebrews are different from Jews. 00:17:23.04\00:17:26.88 You could be Hebrew and maybe from the tribe of Issachar. 00:17:26.91\00:17:30.01 The Jews were typically from the tribe of Judah, Benjamin, and 00:17:30.05\00:17:33.88 Levites could be called Jews. 00:17:33.92\00:17:36.05 But it's a derivative from the word "Judah." 00:17:36.08\00:17:39.52 The ten tribes were carried away captive. 00:17:39.55\00:17:42.32 Paul was from the tribe of Benjamin, but--so he was 00:17:42.36\00:17:45.73 also a Jew. 00:17:45.76\00:17:47.40 But, yeah, the Pharisees were a sect within Judaism that was 00:17:47.46\00:17:53.00 extremely rigorous and fastidious about keeping the law 00:17:53.03\00:17:58.21 of Moses. 00:17:58.24\00:17:59.61 Jean: Okay, very good. 00:17:59.64\00:18:01.01 We've got Aiden, listening in Arizona. 00:18:01.04\00:18:03.51 Aiden, welcome to the program. 00:18:03.55\00:18:05.08 Aiden: Hello, Pastors. 00:18:05.11\00:18:06.65 Doug: Hi. 00:18:06.68\00:18:07.98 Aiden: Yeah, real quick. 00:18:08.02\00:18:09.35 You two are going to stand out in heaven. 00:18:09.38\00:18:11.49 Your crowns are going to be so heavy that the prophets are 00:18:11.52\00:18:14.92 going to say, "Who are these guys?" 00:18:14.96\00:18:17.33 Doug: Oh, I hope I'm just there. 00:18:17.36\00:18:19.53 That would be--happy for that. 00:18:19.56\00:18:21.60 Aiden: I believe you're going to make it, brother. 00:18:21.63\00:18:23.70 Anyway, my question is, it's in Revelations 13, verse 8, and it 00:18:23.73\00:18:29.84 says: "All who dwell on the earth will worship Him, whose 00:18:29.87\00:18:34.11 names have not been written in the book of life." 00:18:34.14\00:18:37.28 And so there is--have not been written. 00:18:37.31\00:18:40.05 And so my question is, if our names are written in the book of 00:18:40.08\00:18:42.95 life, are we protected somehow from worshiping? 00:18:42.98\00:18:48.32 Doug: Well, you know, of course, if you are a follower of Christ, 00:18:48.36\00:18:52.19 the Bible says that, you know, you can be sealed. 00:18:52.23\00:18:56.43 And God said, if it were possible, even the very elect 00:18:56.46\00:18:59.70 would be deceived. 00:18:59.73\00:19:01.04 But you know God's people that are surrendered to them--Him, 00:19:01.07\00:19:03.57 He will keep them. 00:19:03.61\00:19:04.94 Of all that the Father gives me, I will lose nothing. 00:19:04.97\00:19:07.21 Jesus will keep us. 00:19:07.24\00:19:08.88 And so if we're living lives of consecration to God, and we 00:19:08.91\00:19:12.35 are--our names are in the book of life, I believe we will be 00:19:12.38\00:19:14.55 sealed and kept. 00:19:14.58\00:19:16.45 There are people that, sometimes, their names are in 00:19:16.48\00:19:18.89 the book of life. 00:19:18.92\00:19:20.26 And where is it in Revelation he says, "I will not blot their 00:19:20.29\00:19:22.56 names out." 00:19:22.59\00:19:23.89 Both in Revelation and even Moses said, you know, you can 00:19:23.93\00:19:27.93 blot a name out of the book of life. 00:19:27.96\00:19:30.27 So, some may have their names removed. 00:19:30.30\00:19:32.20 Jean: That's Revelation chapter 3, verse 5. It says: "He who 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.84 overcomes shall be clothed in white garment, and I will not 00:19:34.87\00:19:37.71 blot his name out of the book of life." 00:19:37.74\00:19:39.61 Doug: Yeah, so I think everybody that is kept during the final 00:19:39.64\00:19:43.95 plagues, their names are in the book and they're kept by God 00:19:43.98\00:19:47.42 during that time. 00:19:47.45\00:19:48.75 Jean: So your names get entered into the book when you receive 00:19:48.78\00:19:50.42 Jesus as your personal Savior. 00:19:50.45\00:19:51.75 But if you turn away from Him, it does appear from this passage 00:19:51.79\00:19:55.09 that your name can be blotted out of the book. 00:19:55.12\00:19:58.06 And if your name is out of the book, well, then you're subject 00:19:58.09\00:20:00.96 to worshiping the beast power as we read about in Revelation 00:20:01.00\00:20:03.37 chapter 13. 00:20:03.40\00:20:04.73 So we want our names to remain in the lamb's book of life. 00:20:04.77\00:20:07.34 All right, next caller that we have is Chandler, listening 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.04 in California. 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.41 Chandler, welcome to the program. 00:20:10.44\00:20:11.97 Chandler: Hi, my question is when Moses went up to the 00:20:12.01\00:20:16.75 burning bush and he had to take off his shoes, did they have to 00:20:16.78\00:20:20.22 take off their shoes in the holy place, in the most holy place? 00:20:20.25\00:20:23.99 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:20:24.02\00:20:26.22 I don't know that there's a comment. 00:20:26.25\00:20:27.89 The priests would wash their feet and their hands in 00:20:27.92\00:20:31.39 the laver. 00:20:31.43\00:20:32.76 And it may be that, you know, it's not mentioned, I doubt it 00:20:32.79\00:20:36.06 had a dirt floor. 00:20:36.10\00:20:37.43 My guess is there were some carpets because they used 00:20:37.47\00:20:39.13 carpets in the tents. 00:20:39.17\00:20:40.74 My guess is there were some carpets in there and it may be 00:20:40.77\00:20:43.61 that as the priests entered the holy place that they 00:20:43.64\00:20:46.11 were barefoot. 00:20:46.14\00:20:47.44 Jean: It would make sense if they had to wash their feet 00:20:47.48\00:20:49.28 before going in, that they probably wouldn't put on their 00:20:49.31\00:20:51.88 dirty sandals afterwards. 00:20:51.91\00:20:53.25 It would appear that they would probably go barefoot with their 00:20:53.28\00:20:56.02 feet washed into the holy place. 00:20:56.05\00:20:58.05 And of course, when you get to Solomon's Temple, then it had 00:20:58.09\00:21:01.02 a floor that was, you know, with gold everywhere. 00:21:01.06\00:21:04.36 So they'd walk on that special floor when they walked in and 00:21:04.39\00:21:07.86 they probably wouldn't wear shoes. 00:21:07.86\00:21:09.76 And of course, we've been to the Middle East and we've been over 00:21:09.80\00:21:12.87 in that part of the world and still today, the custom exists 00:21:12.90\00:21:15.54 that when you go into a place of worship, a church, you remove 00:21:15.57\00:21:19.57 your shoes when you go in, you know, with your socks 00:21:19.61\00:21:22.24 or barefoot. 00:21:22.28\00:21:23.61 It's a sign of reverence. 00:21:23.65\00:21:24.95 Doug: Yeah, even today, if you go to the Dome of the Rock, the 00:21:24.98\00:21:27.38 site where the temple used to be, you take your shoes off and 00:21:27.42\00:21:30.39 when we go to church in India, a lot of--several places, take 00:21:30.42\00:21:33.49 your shoes off. 00:21:33.52\00:21:34.86 So, absolutely. 00:21:34.89\00:21:36.19 Jean: Okay, thank you. 00:21:36.22\00:21:37.56 We've got Virginia listening in California. 00:21:37.59\00:21:40.03 Virginia, welcome to the program. 00:21:40.06\00:21:41.73 Virginia: Hi, good evening. 00:21:41.76\00:21:43.10 Doug: Evening. 00:21:43.13\00:21:44.43 Virginia: My question is what does pure or what does surrender 00:21:44.47\00:21:50.24 or total surrender mean? 00:21:50.27\00:21:52.54 Like, should I not be watching movies or certain music or I can 00:21:52.57\00:21:57.55 watch some that are like, you know, more like cooking shows 00:21:57.58\00:22:02.28 or some--but what is the total surrender? 00:22:02.32\00:22:05.79 Doug: Well, total surrender would mean you're willing to do 00:22:05.82\00:22:08.96 whatever God wants you to do. 00:22:08.99\00:22:11.56 And so in every situation, you would say not my will, Thy will 00:22:11.59\00:22:14.66 be done. 00:22:14.73\00:22:16.03 Now, that would mean that you apply a biblical test to 00:22:16.06\00:22:19.00 your life. 00:22:19.03\00:22:20.34 Paul says, "Whatever things are noble, just, pure." 00:22:20.37\00:22:23.34 That was at Philippians 4? He says, "Think on these things." 00:22:23.37\00:22:26.71 So if it's a TV program, you want to ask, "Is it noble, 00:22:26.74\00:22:30.05 just, pure?" 00:22:30.08\00:22:31.38 Not too many programs pass that criteria. 00:22:31.41\00:22:34.42 And you can always ask, "What would Jesus do?" 00:22:34.45\00:22:37.59 A Christian's a follower of Christ. 00:22:37.62\00:22:40.52 There's a prayer in the Bible. 00:22:40.56\00:22:42.42 I--the fellow who first uttered the prayer, I don't have much 00:22:42.46\00:22:49.33 confidence in Ahab, but actually he made a statement, he said, 00:22:49.36\00:22:51.90 "All that I am and all that I have are Yours." 00:22:51.93\00:22:55.04 And that is actually a very good statement. 00:22:55.07\00:22:58.91 All that I am and all that I have is Yours. 00:22:58.94\00:23:02.01 That would be total surrender. 00:23:02.04\00:23:03.38 That's why Jesus said we deny ourselves, take up our cross 00:23:03.41\00:23:06.98 and follow Him. 00:23:07.02\00:23:08.32 And sometimes that might mean deny something that we're 00:23:08.35\00:23:10.85 listening to or watching or eating or spending money on or 00:23:10.89\00:23:14.69 whatever it is. 00:23:14.72\00:23:16.06 Jean: You know, the verse you're referring to, Pastor Doug, 00:23:16.09\00:23:17.43 Philippians 4, verse 8, it says: "Finally, brethren, whatever 00:23:17.46\00:23:20.23 things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are 00:23:20.26\00:23:23.40 just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, 00:23:23.43\00:23:27.10 whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, 00:23:27.14\00:23:29.64 if there be any praise, meditate on these things." 00:23:29.67\00:23:32.84 So that's good counsel. 00:23:32.87\00:23:34.24 You know, we do have a book. 00:23:34.28\00:23:35.51 It's called "Life In the Spirit" and it talks a little bit about 00:23:35.54\00:23:38.51 living that victorious Spirit-filled life, and we'll be 00:23:38.55\00:23:41.82 happy to send that to anyone who calls and asks. 00:23:41.85\00:23:44.05 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:23:44.09\00:23:47.26 You can also dial #250 and ask for the book. 00:23:47.29\00:23:49.99 It's called "Life in the Spirit." 00:23:50.03\00:23:52.33 We'll send it to you. 00:23:52.36\00:23:53.70 You can get a digital download. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.00 If you're outside of North America, just go to the website, 00:23:55.03\00:23:57.20 AmazingFacts.org, and you'll be able to read the book there at 00:23:57.23\00:24:00.67 the media library. 00:24:00.70\00:24:02.10 Next caller that we have is Jerry in Georgia. 00:24:02.14\00:24:04.81 Jerry, welcome to the program. 00:24:04.84\00:24:06.47 Jerry: Hello. 00:24:06.51\00:24:07.84 Doug: Hi, Jerry. 00:24:07.88\00:24:09.18 You're on. 00:24:09.21\00:24:10.55 Jerry: I was just wondering what the world would be like after 00:24:10.58\00:24:12.31 probation closes. 00:24:12.35\00:24:14.72 Doug: Well, you can read in Matthew chapter 12, it says at 00:24:14.75\00:24:17.82 that time, this is verse 1, Michael will stand up, the great 00:24:17.85\00:24:21.62 prince that stands for the children of thy people. 00:24:21.66\00:24:24.39 And there will be a time of trouble such as there never has 00:24:24.43\00:24:27.50 been, ever since there was a nation even unto the same time. 00:24:27.56\00:24:30.83 So there is a great time of trouble when Michael stands up. 00:24:30.87\00:24:34.47 That's when Christ ceases His intercession and He stands as 00:24:34.50\00:24:38.77 though He's preparing to come. 00:24:38.81\00:24:40.14 He stands as though judgment has been completed and there's 00:24:40.18\00:24:44.45 a great time of trouble. 00:24:44.48\00:24:45.85 So, He also--Jesus mentions that in Matthew 24. 00:24:45.88\00:24:50.25 Time of trouble such as there never has been. 00:24:50.29\00:24:53.02 So this is the time of Revelation 15 and 16 when 00:24:53.05\00:24:56.96 the seven last plagues are poured out. 00:24:56.99\00:24:59.53 Now, that hasn't started yet. 00:24:59.56\00:25:01.26 You know, because it says the oceans and the rivers turn 00:25:01.30\00:25:04.13 to blood. 00:25:04.17\00:25:05.40 But it's coming and, you know, that's why we want to have our 00:25:05.43\00:25:09.44 names written in that book now. 00:25:09.47\00:25:12.01 Jean: All right, very good. 00:25:12.04\00:25:13.38 We've got Christopher listening in California. 00:25:13.41\00:25:15.21 Christopher, welcome to the program. 00:25:15.24\00:25:16.58 You're on the air. 00:25:16.61\00:25:18.25 Christopher: Hello, good evening. 00:25:18.28\00:25:19.58 Doug: Evening. 00:25:19.61\00:25:21.32 Christopher: My question is, would it be wrong to do boxing 00:25:21.35\00:25:26.89 as self-defense, not to do it professionally, just to train? 00:25:26.92\00:25:31.99 Doug: Well, I don't know if I can give a unbiased answer 00:25:32.03\00:25:34.96 because when I was a kid, my mother dated a boxer for a while 00:25:35.00\00:25:39.03 and he gave my brother and I gloves and a few lessons and I 00:25:39.07\00:25:42.54 always enjoyed it. 00:25:42.57\00:25:43.94 But you have to ask yourself, you know, what would Jesus do, 00:25:43.97\00:25:47.51 as we just said a minute ago. 00:25:47.54\00:25:49.14 It's hard for me. 00:25:49.18\00:25:50.48 You know, sometimes I'll see a boxing match. 00:25:50.51\00:25:55.08 You know, you're surfing through the channels, you see it and I 00:25:55.12\00:25:57.35 want to watch and if I watch for a minute I notice I get all 00:25:57.39\00:26:00.39 excited, just violent. 00:26:00.42\00:26:01.72 You know, you really--you get two guys trying to bludgeon each 00:26:01.76\00:26:04.23 other and knock the other one senseless. 00:26:04.26\00:26:06.49 But you hope you never be in a situation where you need to use 00:26:06.53\00:26:10.70 boxing or any kind of martial arts to defend yourself. 00:26:10.73\00:26:14.07 I think there's probably good things you can do for exercise. 00:26:14.10\00:26:17.84 And I know I used to wrestle with my kids. 00:26:17.87\00:26:20.78 So that's a little more--a little different than trying to 00:26:20.81\00:26:24.58 knock someone out. 00:26:24.61\00:26:26.48 You ever wrestle with your boy, Jean? 00:26:26.51\00:26:28.18 Jean: All the time. 00:26:28.22\00:26:29.85 Not anymore. 00:26:29.88\00:26:31.22 Doug: They're too big? 00:26:31.25\00:26:32.55 Jean: They're too big. 00:26:32.59\00:26:33.92 Doug: Don't go away, friends. 00:26:33.96\00:26:35.26 We're coming back. 00:26:35.29\00:26:36.62 Hopefully, that gave you some answer for your question. 00:26:36.66\00:26:37.89 We're going to have more Bible questions, more Bible answers, 00:26:37.93\00:26:39.89 in just a few moments after these important messages. 00:26:39.93\00:26:42.76 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:26:46.07\00:26:47.40 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:26:47.44\00:26:50.14 Dee: My parents got divorced when I was three or four and 00:26:59.08\00:27:01.55 then I was basically unchurched most of my life. 00:27:01.58\00:27:04.75 I had a girlfriend in high school tell me that she had to 00:27:04.79\00:27:06.86 break up with me because I wasn't a Christian. 00:27:06.89\00:27:08.59 I thought, "That's weird. 00:27:08.62\00:27:09.92 I believe in God. 00:27:09.96\00:27:11.26 Why would she say that?" 00:27:11.29\00:27:12.63 Not realizing I was living a horrible life with foul 00:27:12.66\00:27:13.96 language, was mean, and other stuff. 00:27:14.00\00:27:15.80 And that kind of challenged me initially. 00:27:15.83\00:27:18.93 And then my dad, 911 woke him up, that he wasn't ready to meet 00:27:18.97\00:27:22.30 his Lord, though he was a man that I valued and knew loved me, 00:27:22.34\00:27:25.67 didn't doubt that. 00:27:25.71\00:27:27.04 But he just knew he needed more. 00:27:27.08\00:27:28.38 So he started watching TV ministries first, Baptist 00:27:28.41\00:27:31.81 preachers and others. 00:27:31.85\00:27:33.15 And he was kind of intrigued by what he was learning. 00:27:33.18\00:27:36.52 And so when he turned me on to this, this television station, 00:27:36.55\00:27:39.25 the first thing that I got access to was Doug Batchelor's 00:27:39.29\00:27:42.86 "Most Amazing Prophecies" series that he did in 00:27:42.89\00:27:44.93 Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:27:44.96\00:27:46.53 And I remember when I first watched this, my background was 00:27:46.56\00:27:48.93 Baptist-ish, of sorts. 00:27:48.96\00:27:51.37 But I remember when I first watched this series, I remember 00:27:51.40\00:27:54.84 thinking, I've never heard that before about the state of the 00:27:54.87\00:27:57.37 dead or about the Sabbath or the Commandments or the Rapture or 00:27:57.41\00:28:00.54 other things. 00:28:00.58\00:28:01.88 And I remember thinking to myself, I've never heard that 00:28:01.91\00:28:03.31 before, but that's what the text says and that kept happening. 00:28:03.35\00:28:07.22 And I had this experience of just wondering like, well, what 00:28:07.25\00:28:10.02 else have I believed that isn't as it is, you know? 00:28:10.05\00:28:12.79 And the more I watched, the more helpful it became. 00:28:12.82\00:28:16.06 But again, he kind of took a different perspective on the 00:28:16.09\00:28:18.26 messages so it was fresh to me. 00:28:18.29\00:28:20.26 But I just--these things I had never heard before and I just 00:28:20.30\00:28:23.73 realized, like, there's so much stuff in the Bible that no one's 00:28:23.77\00:28:27.94 talking about and that people need to know. 00:28:27.97\00:28:30.64 And so, I ended up in this awkward situation that some of 00:28:30.67\00:28:33.24 my friends who didn't believe what I was coming to believe, I 00:28:33.27\00:28:36.68 didn't know how to communicate with them. 00:28:36.71\00:28:38.58 And so one of the things that helped me initially was the 00:28:38.61\00:28:41.98 SabbathTruth.com website, TheTruthAboutHell.com and The 00:28:42.02\00:28:46.29 Truth About Death and some of those resource websites that 00:28:46.32\00:28:49.12 Amazing Facts had put together that were just full 00:28:49.16\00:28:51.89 of resources. 00:28:51.93\00:28:53.23 If I needed an answer to something that someone brought 00:28:53.26\00:28:55.13 up, there would be a 95% chance that Amazing Facts would have 00:28:55.16\00:28:59.63 something that I could use. 00:28:59.67\00:29:01.07 It makes witnessing even easier in that sense. 00:29:01.10\00:29:03.74 The Amazing Facts Prophecy Study Bible was my first real Bible 00:29:03.77\00:29:07.61 that I had of a more trusted translation. 00:29:07.64\00:29:10.55 The Bible study guides were in the back of it. 00:29:10.58\00:29:12.35 They had a lot of other resources that were helpful. 00:29:12.38\00:29:14.55 If you can hand a book to somebody and you can pick up a 00:29:14.58\00:29:17.39 phone and call Amazing Facts, you have everything you need. 00:29:17.42\00:29:19.52 And so I was just printing off stuff and handing it to people, 00:29:19.55\00:29:21.96 you know, like here's what I'm coming to realize this is true. 00:29:21.99\00:29:24.76 It's in the Bible. 00:29:24.79\00:29:26.13 And was a huge blessing to me and a real help just to kind of 00:29:26.16\00:29:30.20 help me to better understand what the message was and 00:29:30.23\00:29:33.74 understand it for myself and have resources to put in the 00:29:33.77\00:29:35.94 hands of other people. 00:29:35.97\00:29:37.31 It was invaluable. 00:29:37.34\00:29:38.64 Some time went by, I eventually went to a school of evangelism 00:29:38.67\00:29:41.01 and was baptized. 00:29:41.04\00:29:42.38 And then I had this amazing opportunity that after being in 00:29:42.41\00:29:45.35 ministry for about 5 or 6 years, Doug Batchelor was going to be 00:29:45.38\00:29:48.35 the main speaker at a youth event and I was actually doing a 00:29:48.38\00:29:51.29 seminar at this youth event. 00:29:51.32\00:29:53.22 And it was just this amazing kind of full circle experience 00:29:53.25\00:29:55.76 that the first person that I came in contact with in 00:29:55.79\00:29:58.26 adventism to hear the message, to have it make sense, to be 00:29:58.29\00:30:01.06 able to do ministry together with him, in whatever role 00:30:01.10\00:30:04.30 possible, just meant the world to me and to be able to tell him 00:30:04.33\00:30:07.24 my story and tell him thank you was invaluable. 00:30:07.27\00:30:10.11 And so God just gave me a precious gift in affording 00:30:10.14\00:30:13.74 that opportunity. 00:30:13.78\00:30:15.08 And I'll never forget that. 00:30:15.11\00:30:16.44 My name is Dee. 00:30:16.48\00:30:17.78 Thank you for changing my life. and we've got Russell listening 00:31:53.27\00:31:56.81 in California. 00:31:56.85\00:31:58.15 And he has a question about the Pool of Bethesda. 00:31:58.18\00:31:59.95 Russell, welcome to the program. 00:32:00.05\00:32:02.48 Russell: Hi, Pastors. 00:32:02.52\00:32:03.82 Thank you for taking my question. 00:32:03.85\00:32:05.19 My question is, did the angel of the Lord really stir the Pool 00:32:05.22\00:32:09.56 of Bethesda? 00:32:09.59\00:32:11.59 Doug: All right, well, the-- some of you know the story here. 00:32:11.63\00:32:14.46 It's in the Gospel of John. 00:32:14.46\00:32:16.03 I think it's chapter 5, and it says that the people would 00:32:16.06\00:32:19.73 gather around this pool, sitting on the porch, and they were all 00:32:19.77\00:32:23.61 manner of sick people and they'd see the water bubble or stir 00:32:23.64\00:32:27.78 somehow and they had a belief that an angel had troubled the 00:32:27.81\00:32:31.55 water and whoever got in first was healed. 00:32:31.58\00:32:35.18 Well, I think that John is relating what the legend was. 00:32:35.22\00:32:39.09 I can't imagine that an angel of God would find any joy in 00:32:39.12\00:32:43.96 stirring the water and watching people clamber over each other 00:32:43.99\00:32:47.20 to be the first one in. 00:32:47.23\00:32:48.93 That would seem kind of like a cool pastime. 00:32:48.96\00:32:52.33 So, I don't believe the angel of the Lord was doing that. 00:32:52.37\00:32:55.20 I think it's just saying that they had a belief. 00:32:55.24\00:32:57.81 It was a legend. 00:32:57.84\00:32:59.17 It was a local myth, kind of like they got the waters of 00:32:59.21\00:33:02.51 Lourdes where people go and they think if they can just be there 00:33:02.54\00:33:05.91 or a number of holy sites, it has become a tradition and--but 00:33:05.95\00:33:11.45 it wasn't actually God's angel that was doing that. 00:33:11.49\00:33:13.96 Jean: Yeah, some have even suggested with the 00:33:13.99\00:33:15.46 archaeological, you know, they found the Pool of Bethesda and 00:33:15.49\00:33:18.83 they actually did archaeological digs and they found the arches 00:33:18.86\00:33:21.63 around there and some think that there were springs close by or 00:33:21.66\00:33:25.57 under the pool, that fed the pool, and maybe every now and 00:33:25.60\00:33:28.67 again, there would be some sort of a ripple or a bubble that 00:33:28.70\00:33:31.24 would arise or something. 00:33:31.27\00:33:32.57 Doug: I've got springs and every now and then, you see bubbles 00:33:32.61\00:33:35.81 come up, so could have been. 00:33:35.84\00:33:38.48 Jean: All right, thank you. 00:33:38.51\00:33:39.85 Next caller that we have is Bruce, listening in 00:33:39.88\00:33:41.75 North Carolina. 00:33:41.78\00:33:43.08 And he's got a question about not being under the law, but 00:33:43.12\00:33:45.15 under grace. 00:33:45.19\00:33:46.52 Bruce, welcome to the program. 00:33:46.55\00:33:48.36 Bruce: Thank you, Pastors. 00:33:48.39\00:33:49.79 I just wanted to ask, I did AFCOE online and under the 00:33:49.82\00:33:54.60 section for answering objections, how does one respond 00:33:54.63\00:33:59.43 to: "We're not under the law anymore, that we're 00:33:59.47\00:34:02.44 under grace?" 00:34:02.47\00:34:04.34 Doug: Well, we are under grace. 00:34:04.37\00:34:06.31 But what does that mean? 00:34:06.34\00:34:07.64 Does being under grace mean you no longer need to obey 00:34:07.68\00:34:11.35 God's law? 00:34:11.38\00:34:12.68 Well, Paul actually asks that question in Romans and he says-- 00:34:12.71\00:34:16.69 I think it's chapter 6, he says, "God forbid, how shall we who 00:34:16.72\00:34:20.69 are dead to sin live any longer?" 00:34:20.72\00:34:22.92 So when it says under the law, Paul is talking about those who 00:34:22.96\00:34:26.73 because they've broken the law and that's all of us, the 00:34:26.76\00:34:29.30 penalty is death. 00:34:29.33\00:34:30.67 We are under the death penalty of the law. 00:34:30.70\00:34:34.64 But through Jesus's mercy, He washes us from our 00:34:34.67\00:34:40.01 We are no longer living under a death penalty of the law because 00:34:40.04\00:34:45.35 we are now living under grace. 00:34:45.38\00:34:47.68 But being under grace does not mean you no longer have an 00:34:47.72\00:34:50.79 obligation to obey the law. 00:34:50.82\00:34:52.65 Indeed, those who are under grace are the most eager to do 00:34:52.69\00:34:57.23 God's will and obey the law. 00:34:57.26\00:34:59.09 So we have a free book actually that talks about "Does God's 00:34:59.13\00:35:02.16 Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:35:02.20\00:35:03.60 that answers that but with a lot more scripture too. 00:35:03.63\00:35:06.70 Jean: If you'd like to receive the book, just call and ask 00:35:06.74\00:35:08.70 for it. 00:35:08.74\00:35:10.04 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:35:10.07\00:35:12.11 You can ask for the book. 00:35:12.14\00:35:13.48 "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" You'll be able to get a digital download of the book. 00:35:22.95\00:35:25.29 If you're outside of North America, visit the 00:35:25.32\00:35:27.42 website, AmazingFacts.org. 00:35:27.46\00:35:29.96 Next caller that we have is Lee, listening in Texas. 00:35:29.99\00:35:32.69 And he has a question about the Garden of Gethsemane and what 00:35:32.73\00:35:37.83 Jesus prayed. 00:35:37.87\00:35:39.20 Lee, welcome to the program. 00:35:39.23\00:35:40.94 Lee: Yes, my question is when Jesus prayed among--in the 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.94 Garden of Gethsemane, asking God to take this--take the cup from 00:35:43.97\00:35:47.94 Him, why was He afraid to die if He knew He was going to 00:35:47.98\00:35:51.71 come back? 00:35:51.75\00:35:53.42 Doug: Well, I don't think Jesus was afraid of death. 00:35:53.45\00:35:55.72 The thing that terrified Him, if that's the right word, that He 00:35:55.75\00:35:59.75 was most anxious about is this would be the first time He had 00:35:59.79\00:36:03.19 been separated from the Father. 00:36:03.22\00:36:05.49 Now keep in mind that Christ is love. 00:36:05.53\00:36:07.86 God is love. 00:36:07.86\00:36:09.10 God the Father, God the Son, the very essence of Their nature is 00:36:09.13\00:36:12.10 love which They had expressed together from eternity past. 00:36:12.13\00:36:18.47 And now if--it's probably incomprehensible for us that for 00:36:18.51\00:36:22.11 the first time in eternity, God the Father and the Son would 00:36:22.14\00:36:26.98 be separated. 00:36:27.02\00:36:28.35 And I think looking at that, and knowing that He would be bearing 00:36:28.38\00:36:31.75 sin, and Christ was going to be facing death the way a lost 00:36:31.79\00:36:36.46 person faces the second death. 00:36:36.49\00:36:38.93 He felt the hopelessness that the lost feel. 00:36:38.96\00:36:42.43 And so that's why He said, "If there's any other way that this 00:36:42.46\00:36:44.83 cup might pass from Me," I think compared to the mental 00:36:44.87\00:36:49.34 suffering, the physical suffering was small. 00:36:49.37\00:36:52.87 The anguish that He felt about being separated from the Father, 00:36:52.91\00:36:55.68 not death, is what I think was-- weighed heavily on--the most 00:36:55.71\00:36:59.88 heavily on His heart. 00:36:59.91\00:37:01.32 Jean: Absolutely. 00:37:01.35\00:37:02.65 All right, thank you, Lee. 00:37:02.68\00:37:04.02 We've got Alan, listening in North Carolina, and he's got a 00:37:04.05\00:37:06.52 question about the first miracle that Jesus performed, turning 00:37:06.55\00:37:09.82 water into wine. 00:37:09.86\00:37:11.53 Alan: Hello, thanks for taking my call, Pastors. 00:37:11.56\00:37:13.43 Good evening to you. 00:37:13.46\00:37:15.00 I was just wondering about that first miracle. 00:37:15.03\00:37:18.53 Jesus seemed a bit reluctant and also it seems less significant 00:37:18.57\00:37:23.34 and profound than the other miracles of raising the dead and 00:37:23.37\00:37:26.51 healing the blind and other things He did. 00:37:26.54\00:37:29.11 I just wonder if there's some more significance to that 00:37:29.14\00:37:32.41 turning water into wine that I don't get. 00:37:32.45\00:37:35.62 Doug: Yeah, I--well, I think so. 00:37:35.65\00:37:37.95 I'll give you a couple of things quickly. 00:37:37.99\00:37:39.79 First of all, the wine, Jesus tells us at the end of His life, 00:37:39.82\00:37:44.13 is a symbol of the blood of the covenant. 00:37:44.16\00:37:46.49 And turning the water into the wine, the first plague 00:37:46.53\00:37:52.17 that Moses enacted upon the Pharaoh was turning the water 00:37:52.20\00:37:58.04 into blood of the river. 00:37:58.07\00:37:59.41 Christ--and that was the beginning of their deliverance. 00:37:59.44\00:38:02.28 That was the first plague that ultimately ended with their 00:38:02.31\00:38:04.95 freedom from Egypt. 00:38:04.98\00:38:06.82 Christ's first miracle is turning water into wine, which 00:38:06.85\00:38:10.92 he says is a symbol of his blood. 00:38:10.95\00:38:13.32 The last thing that Jesus does on the cross is the people give 00:38:13.36\00:38:16.83 Him sour wine after He said, "I thirst," that it was sour, it 00:38:16.86\00:38:21.53 was not good. 00:38:21.56\00:38:22.90 He saved good wine at the wedding. 00:38:22.93\00:38:24.97 He takes sour wine on the cross. 00:38:25.00\00:38:27.47 It's almost as though He gives us His and takes ours. 00:38:27.50\00:38:30.97 It's like a blood transfusion. 00:38:31.01\00:38:33.17 And so there's great significance here when He didn't 00:38:33.21\00:38:37.38 downplay it, but when His mother told Him they're out of wine, He 00:38:37.41\00:38:40.08 said, "Woman, My hour is not yet come." 00:38:40.12\00:38:42.02 She thought that this miracle could be the context of somehow 00:38:42.05\00:38:45.35 announcing His Messiahship and He was letting her know no. 00:38:45.39\00:38:49.52 One more thing, I think it's significant that creation began 00:38:49.56\00:38:53.93 with a marriage in the garden. 00:38:53.96\00:38:55.66 And the first miracle of Christ was to condone or to bless 00:38:55.70\00:39:00.47 a wedding. 00:39:00.50\00:39:01.90 And Jesus still wants to bless marriages today. 00:39:01.94\00:39:05.27 Jean: And of course, if you look at the broader context, you have 00:39:05.31\00:39:07.61 a marriage, you have Christ and then the church being His bride. 00:39:07.64\00:39:11.05 Doug: That's right. 00:39:11.08\00:39:12.38 Jean: And in order for that to take place, you had to 00:39:12.41\00:39:14.02 have the crucifixion symbolized by the juice or the wine. 00:39:14.05\00:39:17.29 And then it says the governor of the feast had to give 00:39:17.32\00:39:19.79 his approval. 00:39:19.82\00:39:21.12 And so after Christ rose from the dead, and when He met Mary, 00:39:21.16\00:39:24.16 He said, "Do not cling to Me. 00:39:24.19\00:39:25.53 I have not yet appeared to My Father in heaven." 00:39:25.56\00:39:27.50 So that first miracle, I think, there's lots of profound, you 00:39:27.50\00:39:33.10 know, significance in revealing Christ's mission and what He was 00:39:33.13\00:39:36.64 here on earth to do. 00:39:36.67\00:39:38.01 It's a great-- 00:39:38.04\00:39:39.34 Doug: I feel a sermon coming on. 00:39:39.37\00:39:40.71 Jean: There's a lot there. 00:39:40.74\00:39:42.04 That's a great study. 00:39:42.08\00:39:43.38 All right, thank you, Alan. 00:39:43.41\00:39:44.75 We got Joann in Arizona. 00:39:44.78\00:39:46.55 Joann, welcome to the program. 00:39:46.58\00:39:48.22 Joann: Thank you. 00:39:48.25\00:39:49.48 What does it mean by, "Very few will make it through the eye of 00:39:49.52\00:39:52.55 the needle"? 00:39:52.59\00:39:53.82 Doug: Yeah, Jesus said, "It's harder for a rich man to go to 00:39:53.86\00:39:56.86 heaven than it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle." 00:39:56.89\00:40:00.03 And, well, first of all, Jesus can save rich people because 00:40:00.06\00:40:03.30 right after He makes that statement in Luke, it tells 00:40:03.33\00:40:05.57 about Zacchaeus who was very rich, being saved. 00:40:05.60\00:40:08.60 And of course, you know, there'll be people, 00:40:08.64\00:40:10.41 there's exceptions. 00:40:10.44\00:40:11.97 It's harder for rich people to be saved because they start 00:40:12.01\00:40:14.94 trusting in their riches. 00:40:14.98\00:40:17.25 But you do have people like David and Solomon and Abraham 00:40:17.28\00:40:20.92 and Jacob that had great substance and they'll be in 00:40:20.95\00:40:23.39 the kingdom. 00:40:23.42\00:40:25.35 There's a warning God said to the children of Israel when you 00:40:25.39\00:40:28.59 are blessed and you're living in houses you didn't build and 00:40:28.62\00:40:32.59 eating from vineyards and drinking from wells and you 00:40:32.63\00:40:36.00 become fat. 00:40:36.03\00:40:37.33 Don't forget about the Lord. 00:40:37.37\00:40:38.70 And there's a danger that we start trusting in ourselves and 00:40:38.73\00:40:41.54 our stuff and security and we stop praying. 00:40:41.57\00:40:44.94 So the eye of a needle, though, that was, well, there's a couple 00:40:44.97\00:40:49.98 of theories. 00:40:50.01\00:40:51.35 There was a place in Ancient Hebrew when the shepherds were 00:40:51.38\00:40:55.85 counting the sheep, they had a narrow gate that only one sheep 00:40:55.88\00:41:00.56 at a time could go through, so they could count a large flock. 00:41:00.59\00:41:03.56 And they called it threading them through the eye of 00:41:03.59\00:41:05.69 the needle. 00:41:05.73\00:41:07.03 So they're saying, well, for a camel to go through the eye of a 00:41:07.10\00:41:09.00 needle, it could do it, but it'd have to get on its knees and be 00:41:09.03\00:41:11.47 totally unloaded. 00:41:11.50\00:41:13.00 And it's basically Jesus's way of saying, "Yeah, a rich man can 00:41:13.03\00:41:15.84 get to the kingdom, but he has-- he has to be willing to put all 00:41:15.87\00:41:19.77 things in God's hands." 00:41:19.81\00:41:22.58 And he could also just be using a metaphor. 00:41:22.61\00:41:25.05 You know, Jesus said, "If you got a plank in your eye and you 00:41:25.08\00:41:28.95 say to your friend, 'Help me get the piece of dust out of 00:41:28.98\00:41:31.29 your eye.'" 00:41:31.32\00:41:32.65 Well, that's called irony, pardon the pun. 00:41:32.69\00:41:34.89 So, He may have just been using the irony of trying to picture a 00:41:34.92\00:41:39.33 camel going through the eye of a needle. 00:41:39.36\00:41:42.86 Jean: Okay, thank you. 00:41:42.90\00:41:44.40 We've got Marvins listening in Canada and he has a question 00:41:44.43\00:41:48.04 about the Antichrist's power of Revelation 13. 00:41:48.07\00:41:50.77 Marvins, welcome to the program. 00:41:50.81\00:41:52.74 Marvins: Yes, hello, Pastor. 00:41:52.77\00:41:54.31 Is the Papacy the only Antichrist according to 00:41:54.34\00:41:58.81 Revelation 13, or can there be several Antichrists according to 00:41:58.85\00:42:03.82 1 John 2, verse 18 through 22? 00:42:03.85\00:42:09.49 Doug: Yeah, the--in 1 John, matter of fact, you don't find 00:42:09.52\00:42:13.43 the word "Antichrist" in the book of Revelation; you find the 00:42:13.46\00:42:16.40 person or the power of the Antichrist in Revelation. 00:42:16.43\00:42:20.27 The word "Antichrist" is mentioned in 1 John. 00:42:20.30\00:42:22.70 He said, "Yeah, there are many Antichrists." 00:42:22.74\00:42:24.77 So in a broader sense, you know, a power that is working against 00:42:24.81\00:42:30.11 Christ is anti-Christ. 00:42:30.15\00:42:32.48 You're just--you're opposing the work and the Spirit of 00:42:32.51\00:42:34.82 Christ, that means you're against Christ. 00:42:34.85\00:42:36.95 But then there was a big prophetic Antichrist that's 00:42:36.99\00:42:39.52 mentioned in prophecy. 00:42:39.55\00:42:41.02 And for 500 years, Protestants have identified the Papacy as 00:42:41.06\00:42:45.89 that Antichrist. 00:42:45.93\00:42:47.23 When the Christian church lost its simplicity and purity and 00:42:47.30\00:42:49.80 became a political power, and you know, a lot of money and 00:42:49.83\00:42:54.10 kind of adopted idolatry from the Romans, they felt like the 00:42:54.14\00:42:57.97 church went through a great compromise and it fulfilled that 00:42:58.01\00:43:03.31 many of the prophecies that talk about what the Antichrist 00:43:03.35\00:43:06.98 would become. 00:43:07.02\00:43:08.35 Jean: You know, it's interesting, Pastor Doug, there 00:43:08.38\00:43:09.68 was a time period during the early days of the Protestant 00:43:09.72\00:43:11.79 reformation where there were two rival Popes and they were both 00:43:11.82\00:43:16.19 accusing each other of being Antichrist. 00:43:16.22\00:43:18.86 So you have one Pope accusing another Pope of being the 00:43:18.89\00:43:22.10 Antichrist and the other Pope accusing that one of being 00:43:22.13\00:43:24.53 the Antichrist. 00:43:24.57\00:43:25.87 So it is interesting when you study the history of what 00:43:25.90\00:43:29.10 transpired there. 00:43:29.14\00:43:30.44 We do have a study guide and it's called, "Who is 00:43:30.47\00:43:32.37 the Antichrist?" 00:43:32.41\00:43:33.64 And we'll be happy to send that to anyone who wants to study the 00:43:33.68\00:43:35.74 subject further. 00:43:35.78\00:43:37.08 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:43:37.11\00:43:40.52 Or you can dial #250 on your phone, say "Bible Answers Live" 00:43:40.55\00:43:44.29 and then ask for that study guide by name, "Who is 00:43:44.32\00:43:46.65 the Antichrist?" 00:43:46.69\00:43:48.02 And you'll be able to learn a lot about what this topic is all 00:43:48.06\00:43:51.06 about in the Bible. 00:43:51.09\00:43:52.49 Next caller that we have is Carlos and he's calling 00:43:52.53\00:43:54.76 from Texas. 00:43:54.83\00:43:56.03 He's got a question about Luke 17, talking about the days of 00:43:56.06\00:43:59.27 Lot and Noah. 00:43:59.30\00:44:00.70 Carlos, welcome to the program. 00:44:00.74\00:44:02.44 Carlos: Good evening, Pastors, and thanks for 00:44:02.47\00:44:04.27 your ministry. 00:44:04.31\00:44:05.64 God bless. 00:44:05.67\00:44:06.98 Doug: Yeah. 00:44:07.01\00:44:08.34 Thank you. 00:44:08.38\00:44:09.68 Carlos: My question is of Luke 17, Jesus mentions both the 00:44:09.71\00:44:12.85 days of Lot and the days of Noah in speaking of His 00:44:12.88\00:44:15.62 coming kingdom. 00:44:15.65\00:44:17.02 And I wanted to ask you about the scenario after Noah leaves 00:44:17.05\00:44:23.99 the ark, right? 00:44:24.03\00:44:25.33 And is saved essentially, and Lot is pulled out of Sodom. 00:44:25.36\00:44:31.47 Both of them have an encounter with wine. 00:44:31.50\00:44:34.64 I wondered if that has any significance prophetically for 00:44:34.67\00:44:40.78 today or for the future. 00:44:40.81\00:44:43.58 Doug: You know, that's interesting. 00:44:43.61\00:44:44.95 I did a study comparing Lot and Noah. 00:44:44.98\00:44:48.52 And in many ways, there's many similarities and many paradoxes. 00:44:48.55\00:44:52.95 Noah has just sons, Lot has just daughters. 00:44:52.99\00:44:56.62 Noah saves his entire family, Lot loses his family. 00:44:56.66\00:45:00.90 Noah, you know, he separated from the cities; Lot moves to 00:45:00.93\00:45:04.60 the city. 00:45:04.63\00:45:06.00 And you just--you can see a lot of parallels that are happening 00:45:06.03\00:45:08.94 there, but it is true, that Lot drinks wine, he sleeps with his 00:45:08.97\00:45:14.11 daughters and has Moab and Ammon, and Noah drinks wine and 00:45:14.14\00:45:18.25 he stumbles around naked and curses his grandson and son, so 00:45:18.28\00:45:25.79 yeah, I've got a whole study on that and what it all means is 00:45:25.82\00:45:29.69 I'm not sure yet, but there are a lot of interesting parallels. 00:45:29.72\00:45:32.36 They're almost like opposites. 00:45:32.39\00:45:34.00 Jean: And of course, when Jesus mentions that, He's talking 00:45:34.00\00:45:36.00 about what was happening in society at that time, what was 00:45:36.03\00:45:38.83 happening in the days of Noah. 00:45:38.87\00:45:40.20 You had violence filling the earth. 00:45:40.24\00:45:41.97 It says, "Every imagination of the heart was evil continually." 00:45:42.00\00:45:44.84 You have the time of Lot there in the city of Sodom and the 00:45:44.87\00:45:48.01 other cities surrounding the area where they had plenty to 00:45:48.04\00:45:50.68 eat, they were lazy, they were involved in, you know, all kinds 00:45:50.71\00:45:55.15 of sexual misconduct and morality issues. 00:45:55.18\00:45:59.49 And, you know, that's sort of a description of what's happening 00:45:59.52\00:46:01.86 in our world today. 00:46:01.89\00:46:03.19 Things are falling apart all around us. 00:46:03.22\00:46:04.56 So I think that's an important lesson connected there. 00:46:04.59\00:46:07.76 Next caller that we have is Dana listening in Nevada. 00:46:07.83\00:46:11.73 And Dana has a question about the chronological order of 00:46:11.77\00:46:15.20 the scriptures. 00:46:15.24\00:46:16.54 Dana, welcome to the program. 00:46:16.57\00:46:17.91 Dana: Hi. 00:46:17.94\00:46:19.24 My question is regarding Revelation chapter 13, verses 3 00:46:19.27\00:46:22.41 and 5: "And power was given unto him to continue forty and 00:46:22.44\00:46:26.61 two months." 00:46:26.65\00:46:28.22 But in verse 3, says that, "And I saw one of his heads as it 00:46:28.25\00:46:34.26 were wounded to death." 00:46:34.29\00:46:35.62 Why the order is that way? 00:46:35.66\00:46:37.19 My son understood that the 42 months are followed after 00:46:37.23\00:46:44.87 the wound. 00:46:44.90\00:46:47.44 Doug: Yeah, or do you want to-- 00:46:47.47\00:46:49.50 Jean: Yeah, when you--when you look at some of these passages, 00:46:49.54\00:46:51.44 especially in Revelation 13, not everything, as you mentioned, is 00:46:51.47\00:46:55.24 given in chronological order. 00:46:55.28\00:46:56.64 Rather, clues are given. 00:46:56.68\00:46:58.65 And these clues are very important to help identify who 00:46:58.68\00:47:01.72 the power is. 00:47:01.75\00:47:02.98 Now in Bible prophecy a beast represents a political power. 00:47:03.02\00:47:06.32 This first beast of Revelation 13 is both got a political 00:47:06.35\00:47:10.63 component, but also a religious component. 00:47:10.66\00:47:13.43 And it says that he would rule for 42 months. 00:47:13.46\00:47:15.93 There were 30 days in a Hebrew month and you times that out, 30 00:47:15.96\00:47:21.67 times 42, comes to 1260. 00:47:21.70\00:47:24.74 One prophetic day is equal to one literal year. 00:47:24.77\00:47:26.98 So one of the clues given in the verse is that this power would 00:47:27.01\00:47:29.71 rule for 1260 years, and then it would receive a deadly wound. 00:47:29.74\00:47:34.08 Now, it's not always written in strict chronological order, but 00:47:34.12\00:47:37.12 it's giving us clues. 00:47:37.15\00:47:38.45 And when we put the clues together, we can identify 00:47:38.49\00:47:40.99 who this power is. 00:47:41.02\00:47:42.26 Not only this power, but also the other beast that you read 00:47:42.29\00:47:44.46 about in Revelation 13 that comes from the earth. 00:47:44.49\00:47:47.66 Again, you put the clues together and that is identified. 00:47:47.66\00:47:49.96 It's the US in Bible prophecy. 00:47:50.00\00:47:53.64 Thank you. 00:47:53.67\00:47:54.97 All right, next caller that we have is Leo in Arizona. 00:47:55.00\00:47:57.47 Leo, welcome to the program. 00:47:57.51\00:47:59.54 Leo: My question is on Matthew 4:1 through 11, 00:47:59.57\00:48:04.58 especially the 3: Did Satan not know who Jesus was when he was 00:48:04.61\00:48:10.75 trying to tempt Him? 00:48:10.79\00:48:12.12 Doug: Well, I think Satan definitely knew that this was 00:48:12.15\00:48:15.39 the Son of God. 00:48:15.42\00:48:16.76 In fact, at the beginning of Jesus's ministry, often when He 00:48:16.79\00:48:20.36 encountered demon-possessed people, they said, "We know who 00:48:20.40\00:48:23.00 You are." 00:48:23.03\00:48:24.27 So if the demons knew, then you can count on the devil knowing. 00:48:24.30\00:48:27.60 The bigger question is, did Jesus know? 00:48:27.64\00:48:29.74 Maybe not at first, when the devil appeared as an angel of 00:48:29.77\00:48:33.21 light, you can read in 2 Corinthians 11, Satan himself 00:48:33.24\00:48:37.15 can be transformed into an angel of light. 00:48:37.18\00:48:39.81 And--but when he began to say, "If You're the Son of God," that 00:48:39.85\00:48:43.52 sort of betrayed that this was not an angel sent from heaven. 00:48:43.55\00:48:47.29 Of course, when he finally said, "Fall down and worship me," then 00:48:47.32\00:48:49.76 all doubt was removed who this was. 00:48:49.79\00:48:52.83 Jean: And when the devil said, "If You are the Son of God," he 00:48:52.86\00:48:55.36 wasn't asking because he didn't know. 00:48:55.40\00:48:57.07 He was wanting to cause Christ to question the promise that He 00:48:57.10\00:49:01.70 knew He was the Son of God and to exercise His power on His own 00:49:01.74\00:49:05.44 behalf, contrary to the will of the Father. 00:49:05.47\00:49:07.84 So it was not a genuine question there by any means. 00:49:07.88\00:49:10.91 It was a plot, it was part of a temptation. 00:49:10.95\00:49:14.08 All right, next caller that we have is Dana listening 00:49:14.12\00:49:17.02 from California. 00:49:17.05\00:49:18.39 You're on the air. 00:49:18.42\00:49:19.72 Dana: Yes, okay, my question is from the Bible, how can I 00:49:19.75\00:49:23.59 pray more effectively? 00:49:23.63\00:49:25.53 I know about the Lord's Prayer. 00:49:25.56\00:49:27.40 But is there other--something-- another part of the Bible that 00:49:27.40\00:49:30.07 can help me pray more effectively? 00:49:30.10\00:49:31.77 Doug: Yeah, I think there's a number of passages you can 00:49:31.80\00:49:34.30 look at. 00:49:34.34\00:49:36.30 You know, the Bible says that we pray without ceasing, Paul tells 00:49:36.34\00:49:41.01 us, and that doesn't mean that you go around on your knees all 00:49:41.04\00:49:44.51 the time praying. 00:49:44.55\00:49:45.88 It means being in an attitude of knowing that God is always a 00:49:45.91\00:49:49.22 prayer away. 00:49:49.25\00:49:50.55 Many times during the day, I'm just lifting prayers to the Lord 00:49:50.59\00:49:53.39 and talking to the Lord and saying, "Help me with this" or 00:49:53.42\00:49:55.36 "Pray for that person." 00:49:55.39\00:49:56.89 And so, prayer is also being in continual communion with God, 00:49:56.93\00:50:00.73 it's not just one prayer. 00:50:00.76\00:50:02.23 But there should also be regular official prayer time where you 00:50:02.26\00:50:07.10 kneel if you're able and you have your personal devotions and 00:50:07.14\00:50:10.27 you commit your life to the Lord. 00:50:10.31\00:50:12.07 At the end of the day, you may be asking for mercy and wisdom 00:50:12.11\00:50:15.24 for the next day. 00:50:15.28\00:50:16.51 Looking at some of the prayers in the Bible that you see, you 00:50:16.54\00:50:20.92 can see, you know, Jacob is wrestling with God in prayer. 00:50:20.95\00:50:26.89 You can read the prayers of Solomon, the prayers of Daniel, 00:50:26.92\00:50:29.66 the prayers of Hannah. 00:50:29.69\00:50:31.86 There's a lot of beautiful prayers recorded in the Bible. 00:50:31.89\00:50:34.20 Nehemiah. 00:50:34.23\00:50:35.53 And that I think also gives you a context about prayer. 00:50:35.56\00:50:39.03 Prayers don't have to be long. 00:50:39.07\00:50:40.37 You look at the prayer of Elijah, fire comes down from 00:50:40.40\00:50:42.87 heaven, but the prayer is less than, oh, 18 seconds, I think. 00:50:42.90\00:50:47.84 Jean: You know, Pastor Doug, I'm just looking at our books here. 00:50:47.88\00:50:49.94 Doug: "Teach Us to Pray." 00:50:49.98\00:50:51.31 Jean: Yeah, that's right. 00:50:51.35\00:50:52.65 I wanted to check on the name there. 00:50:52.68\00:50:53.98 We have a book that talks about prayer and you might find 00:50:54.02\00:50:55.68 that helpful. 00:50:55.72\00:50:57.05 It's just called "Teach Us to Pray," and the number to call 00:50:57.09\00:50:59.35 for that is 800-835-6747. 00:50:59.39\00:51:02.79 You can ask for the book, "Teach Us to Pray," or dial #250 and 00:51:02.82\00:51:06.80 say, "Bible Answers Live," ask for the book by name. 00:51:06.83\00:51:09.16 If you're outside of North America, just visit our website, 00:51:09.20\00:51:12.13 just AmazingFacts.org and you'll be able to get a lot more 00:51:12.17\00:51:15.44 information over there. 00:51:15.47\00:51:16.81 Doug: Thank you, Dana. 00:51:16.84\00:51:18.14 Jean: Next caller that we have is Nel in California asking 00:51:18.17\00:51:21.08 about what does the Bible say about competitive sports? 00:51:21.11\00:51:23.78 Nel, welcome to the program. 00:51:23.81\00:51:26.18 Nel: Hi, thank you, Pastors. 00:51:26.21\00:51:28.38 I was wondering what does the Bible say about competitive 00:51:28.42\00:51:31.55 sports, because some Christians seem to feel that you should not 00:51:31.59\00:51:35.99 participate in any types of competitive sports, you know, 00:51:36.02\00:51:39.16 even tennis, basketball, or watch them. 00:51:39.19\00:51:42.43 I mean, some Christian writers also would say the same things 00:51:42.46\00:51:46.40 according to what they say. 00:51:46.43\00:51:47.80 So what does the Bible say about it? 00:51:47.84\00:51:50.41 And what can we as Christians participate in? 00:51:50.44\00:51:54.08 Doug: All right, well, if you're talking about, what does the 00:51:54.11\00:51:56.51 Bible say, there are principles in the Bible that I think you 00:51:56.54\00:52:01.68 can apply to sports. 00:52:01.72\00:52:04.15 Paul, you know, Paul freely uses sports references. 00:52:04.19\00:52:09.66 He talks about, "I do not box the air." 00:52:09.69\00:52:12.03 He says, "I do not run as though I'm not trying," and he says, 00:52:12.06\00:52:17.43 "If you're going to run the race, run to win." 00:52:17.47\00:52:20.47 And so, you know, Paul incorporates and you got to keep 00:52:20.50\00:52:22.67 in mind the Greek culture had greatly influenced the Hebrews 00:52:22.70\00:52:26.37 and the Romans and sports were a big part of that. 00:52:26.41\00:52:29.48 It's where you get the word "gymnasium" comes all the way 00:52:29.51\00:52:31.85 back from them. 00:52:31.88\00:52:33.21 So, Paul uses sport analogies a lot. 00:52:33.25\00:52:36.79 He doesn't necessarily say anything negative about sports, 00:52:36.82\00:52:40.42 but he does talk about the spirit in the mind of Christ. 00:52:40.46\00:52:44.09 A lot of sports in the competition, it's not the idea 00:52:44.13\00:52:47.86 of just getting exercise, but it's almost like, you know, 00:52:47.86\00:52:50.43 there's violence and I think Christians ought to avoid any 00:52:50.47\00:52:53.87 kind of violent sports. 00:52:53.90\00:52:55.34 I think that when an emphasis is made on winning and the trophies 00:52:55.37\00:53:00.54 and the pride, that's not, the spirit of Christ. 00:53:00.58\00:53:04.68 Pastor Ross and I, maybe confession is good for the soul 00:53:04.71\00:53:08.45 but bad for the reputation. 00:53:08.48\00:53:09.78 We play racquetball together. 00:53:09.82\00:53:11.39 We don't make a big deal about who wins. 00:53:11.42\00:53:13.99 I get over it in about 5 minutes. 00:53:14.02\00:53:16.06 But we try to, you know, to keep score so you can know when 00:53:16.09\00:53:19.19 the game ends. 00:53:19.23\00:53:20.53 So it's a great exercise. 00:53:20.56\00:53:21.86 There's nothing inherently wrong with getting exercise where 00:53:21.90\00:53:24.23 there's a sport connected, but there's some principles that you 00:53:24.27\00:53:26.94 can apply to different sports that may be a guide. 00:53:26.97\00:53:29.94 Jean: You know, I think some sports are just geared to 00:53:29.97\00:53:33.24 hurting people. 00:53:33.27\00:53:34.58 I mean, these, sort of these combative sports, where it's 00:53:34.61\00:53:38.45 just--they're just hitting each other trying to knock each 00:53:38.48\00:53:41.32 other out. 00:53:41.35\00:53:42.68 It's even one step more you might say than boxing where it's 00:53:42.72\00:53:46.09 just violent and its goal is to hurt people. 00:53:46.12\00:53:49.76 I don't think Christians should be involved in anything 00:53:49.79\00:53:51.53 like that. 00:53:51.56\00:53:52.89 It just feeds that mindset of anger and violence. 00:53:52.93\00:53:56.80 And, you know, we don't want that. 00:53:56.83\00:53:58.83 Doug: Exercise is great and Paul says bodily exercise profits, 00:53:58.87\00:54:02.54 but godliness profits more. 00:54:02.57\00:54:05.47 Unfortunately, you know, some of the sports, if--like 00:54:05.51\00:54:09.01 professional football and I'm probably going to get letters on 00:54:09.04\00:54:11.28 this, a lot of those guys suffer injuries that carry--they carry 00:54:11.31\00:54:15.45 with them through their lives. 00:54:15.48\00:54:16.82 So it doesn't build their bodies up. 00:54:16.85\00:54:18.15 It often breaks their bodies down. 00:54:18.19\00:54:20.09 So, you know, that clearly, I think, is not a healthy thing 00:54:20.12\00:54:23.22 for a Christian to engage in. 00:54:23.26\00:54:25.23 Jean: All right, very good. 00:54:25.26\00:54:26.56 Thank you. 00:54:26.59\00:54:27.93 Do we have time for one more, Pastor Doug? 00:54:27.96\00:54:29.23 Doug: We do if it's quick. 00:54:29.26\00:54:30.57 Jean: All right, let's see. 00:54:30.60\00:54:31.93 We've got Matthew in Tennessee. 00:54:31.97\00:54:33.54 Matthew, we've got about a minute and your question 00:54:33.57\00:54:36.07 this evening? 00:54:36.10\00:54:37.41 Matthew: Hi, Pastors. 00:54:37.44\00:54:38.77 In Mark 7:19, in the New American Standard Bible, it says 00:54:38.81\00:54:43.14 parenthetically that thus he made all foods clean and then in 00:54:43.18\00:54:49.22 the King James Version, it doesn't say that. 00:54:49.25\00:54:51.99 It kind of makes me not trust the other translations. 00:54:52.02\00:54:56.69 I don't know if, what--did the translator just add that, I 00:54:56.73\00:55:00.26 guess, is my question. 00:55:00.30\00:55:01.66 Doug: Yeah, there's a manuscript where they've added that. 00:55:01.70\00:55:05.23 And Jesus said that what goes in your mouth doesn't defile you. 00:55:05.27\00:55:09.30 It goes in and it comes out, thus "purging all meats" in King 00:55:09.34\00:55:13.21 James, it just means your body, you know, basically purges the 00:55:13.24\00:55:16.61 food that you eat. 00:55:16.64\00:55:17.95 That's not how you get defiled. 00:55:17.98\00:55:19.31 And then someone took the liberty of saying, "In saying 00:55:19.35\00:55:22.52 this, Jesus declared all foods clean." 00:55:22.55\00:55:24.19 That is not in the original manuscripts in the Greek. 00:55:24.22\00:55:26.86 Most manuscripts I should say. 00:55:26.89\00:55:28.89 But friends, we're out of time for this segment of the program. 00:55:28.92\00:55:32.26 I always like to remind people we sign off in two stages. 00:55:32.29\00:55:35.53 Stay tuned. 00:55:35.56\00:55:36.87 Stand by. 00:55:36.90\00:55:38.23 We're going to go through some rapid fire internet 00:55:38.27\00:55:39.57 Bible questions. 00:55:39.60\00:55:40.94 God bless. 00:55:40.97\00:55:42.27 And we'll study together again next week. 00:55:42.30\00:55:44.97 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:55:47.14\00:55:49.84 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. first question: In Deuteronomy 14:26 God seems to 00:56:17.74\00:56:21.84 endorse drinking alcohol. 00:56:21.88\00:56:23.81 Is this understanding accurate? 00:56:23.85\00:56:25.71 Doug: When he talks about strong drink there, he's not talking 00:56:25.75\00:56:28.32 about alcohol. 00:56:28.35\00:56:29.65 They used to condense their grape juice. 00:56:29.68\00:56:32.62 Dehydrate it, if you will. 00:56:32.65\00:56:34.66 And then they'd reconstitute it when they got to their 00:56:34.69\00:56:37.23 destination because liquid's very heavy. 00:56:37.26\00:56:40.00 They would take this grape juice and sort of dehydrate it into 00:56:40.03\00:56:43.23 a syrup. 00:56:43.26\00:56:44.60 And then as they traveled, they'd get to the place where 00:56:44.63\00:56:46.80 the feast is, they'd reconstitute it. 00:56:46.84\00:56:48.50 And that's why He said you could drink the strong drink. 00:56:48.54\00:56:50.41 Don't think strong alcohol, think strong concentrated. 00:56:50.44\00:56:53.54 Jean: Okay, Sherman is asking: Can you please explain the 00:56:53.58\00:56:56.38 sequence of events? 00:56:56.41\00:56:57.75 You have the wicked bowing the knee and confessing that God is 00:56:57.78\00:57:00.58 righteous and then suddenly surrounding the New Jerusalem 00:57:00.62\00:57:03.49 trying to attack it. 00:57:03.52\00:57:04.85 Doug: They're going to be overwhelmed with a sense of 00:57:04.89\00:57:06.76 their guilt and His power and the wicked will bow before 00:57:06.79\00:57:10.73 God's throne. 00:57:10.76\00:57:12.09 Jesus said, and Paul says, "The time is coming when every knee 00:57:12.13\00:57:15.33 will bow and every tongue will confess to God," and this is 00:57:15.36\00:57:18.33 that moment. 00:57:18.37\00:57:19.70 But then when they realize that this, it's hopeless, in 00:57:19.73\00:57:24.04 desperation, Satan will try to rally them to attack the city. 00:57:24.07\00:57:27.81 When they realize they've been condemned in the judgment, 00:57:27.84\00:57:29.98 they'll think what have we got to lose? 00:57:30.01\00:57:31.85 And this demonstrates their hearts are still not changed and 00:57:31.88\00:57:34.65 God has no option but to judge and destroy them. 00:57:34.68\00:57:38.39 And that's when the fire and brimstone rain down. 00:57:38.42\00:57:42.02 It forms a lake of fire and they're all cast into this lake 00:57:42.06\00:57:44.46 of fire. 00:57:44.49\00:57:45.83 Jean: Okay, next question that we have. 00:57:45.86\00:57:47.13 Bradley's asking: How many prophecies still need to be 00:57:47.20\00:57:49.23 fulfilled before the seven last plagues can start? 00:57:49.26\00:57:52.23 Doug: Jesus said, "The gospel of the kingdom will be preached in 00:57:52.27\00:57:55.04 all the world for a witness, then the end will come." 00:57:55.07\00:57:58.11 The beast power is going to make a law compelling people to 00:57:58.14\00:58:01.21 worship a certain way. 00:58:01.24\00:58:02.61 That has not happened. 00:58:02.64\00:58:03.98 And so I--you know, there's probably several other 00:58:04.01\00:58:05.91 prophecies I'm not thinking of offhand. 00:58:05.95\00:58:08.32 We're seeing them being fulfilled right now. 00:58:08.35\00:58:11.65 And I'd say, stay tuned. 00:58:11.69\00:58:13.52 We're going to see things happen very quickly in the near future. 00:58:13.56\00:58:16.32 Till next week, we'll study God's Word. 00:58:16.36\00:58:18.69 Stay close to Jesus. 00:58:18.73\00:58:20.96 announcer: "Bible Answers Live," honest and accurate answers 00:58:21.73\00:58:25.03 to your Bible questions.
