male announcer: It is the best selling book in history, no 00:00:03.03\00:00:06.03 volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, and its 00:00:06.17\00:00:10.04 words sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious should 00:00:10.17\00:00:14.01 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.04\00:00:16.11 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.41\00:00:19.65 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.19\00:00:34.00 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.03\00:00:38.83 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:38.87\00:00:43.94 Now here's your host from "Amazing Facts International," 00:00:43.97\00:00:47.88 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.88 Doug Batchelor: Hi friends. 00:00:49.91\00:00:51.25 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:51.28\00:00:52.71 Antibiotics like penicillin are chemicals effective at killing 00:00:53.58\00:00:57.65 or stopping the growth of a microscopic disease 00:00:57.69\00:01:00.29 causing bacteria. 00:01:00.32\00:01:01.66 Ironically, history's greatest miracle drug was discovered 00:01:02.19\00:01:06.26 quite by accident. 00:01:06.29\00:01:07.66 In 1928, Alexander Fleming, Scottish physician and 00:01:08.03\00:01:11.67 microbiologist, returned from vacation to his messy laboratory 00:01:11.70\00:01:15.67 at St. Mary's Hospital in London and he noticed something odd. 00:01:15.70\00:01:19.57 He left some plates with bacteria cultures on a bench in 00:01:19.97\00:01:23.08 the corner. 00:01:23.11\00:01:24.45 On examination, he noticed one of them was growing mold. 00:01:24.48\00:01:28.08 Fleming observed that the bacteria nearest to the mold 00:01:28.52\00:01:31.85 growing was dying. 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.49 Something in the mold was killing the bacteria. 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.73 Fleming discovered the mold was penicillium, one of the top 00:01:37.29\00:01:40.86 three most common airborne fungi. 00:01:40.90\00:01:42.83 It took years before his discovery was refined by others, 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.60 tested, and manufactured on a mass scale. 00:01:46.63\00:01:48.97 Before penicillin, the number one killers in the world were 00:01:49.67\00:01:52.97 things like tuberculosis, pneumonia, diarrhea, scarlet 00:01:53.01\00:01:56.44 fever, meningitis, infections from wounds or even surgery. 00:01:56.48\00:02:00.28 Penicillin's ability to cure people of what were once fatal 00:02:01.02\00:02:04.79 bacterial infections has saved over 200 million lives. 00:02:04.82\00:02:09.29 It's easy to understand why it's called a miracle drug. 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.83 You know, it tells us, Pastor Ross, in the Bible that there is 00:02:13.63\00:02:16.40 a substance infinitely more powerful than the 00:02:16.43\00:02:19.43 strongest antibiotics. 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.07 Jëan Ross: That's correct, Pastor Doug. 00:02:21.64\00:02:22.97 It is something that can not only cure sickness, but more 00:02:23.00\00:02:26.88 importantly, the sickness of sin and to eternal death. 00:02:26.91\00:02:31.85 And of course, we're talking about the blood of Christ, 00:02:31.88\00:02:33.75 the cross. 00:02:33.78\00:02:35.08 Doug: Amen. 00:02:35.12\00:02:36.42 You can read a couple of scriptures here. 00:02:36.45\00:02:37.79 Hebrews 9, verse 14. 00:02:37.82\00:02:39.15 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the 00:02:39.19\00:02:42.02 eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse 00:02:42.06\00:02:46.09 your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" 00:02:46.13\00:02:49.90 And then there's another powerful verse in Ephesians 1:7. 00:02:50.37\00:02:53.27 "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the 00:02:53.97\00:02:57.57 forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace." 00:02:57.61\00:03:01.81 I remember, Pastor Ross, when I first started looking into the 00:03:02.31\00:03:05.25 Christian religion. 00:03:05.28\00:03:06.68 I thought, it's kind of gory. 00:03:06.72\00:03:08.55 They talked about power in the blood and saved by the blood and 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.85 washed by the blood. 00:03:11.89\00:03:13.22 And I thought, this is a bloody religion. 00:03:13.25\00:03:15.02 And--but then I came to understand that, you know, the 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.96 Bible says the life is in the blood and Christ, in giving His 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.73 blood, He gave his life, and we are washed by His life and we 00:03:21.76\00:03:26.27 are healed and empowered by His life and His sacrifice of 00:03:26.30\00:03:29.44 His life. 00:03:29.47\00:03:30.81 And so, in a sense, He gives us a transfusion of His purity to 00:03:30.84\00:03:37.18 heal us from our disease. 00:03:37.21\00:03:38.88 So, in that sense, the blood of Christ washes away our sin. 00:03:38.91\00:03:42.98 And maybe there's some people listening out there that think, 00:03:43.45\00:03:46.49 I need healing, I need salvation and forgiveness for my sins, and 00:03:46.82\00:03:51.86 I think I could use a dose of that cure. 00:03:52.09\00:03:55.06 We have a free offer that talks about that. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.53 Jëan: We do. 00:03:57.57\00:03:58.80 The book is entitled, "The High Cost of the Cross," and we'll be 00:03:58.83\00:04:00.84 happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.64 That's our free offer this evening, so take advantage 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.74 of it. 00:04:04.77\00:04:06.01 All you need to do is just call the number 800-835-6747, you can 00:04:06.04\00:04:10.05 ask for offer number 156 or just ask for it by name, "The High 00:04:10.08\00:04:14.35 Cost of the Cross." 00:04:14.38\00:04:15.68 It explains the gospel and shares good news. 00:04:15.72\00:04:18.82 If you'd like to get a digital version of the book, just dial 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.59 pound 250 with your smartphone. 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.36 Again, just say, "Bible Answers Live," and then say, "High Cost 00:04:24.39\00:04:27.56 of the Cross." 00:04:27.60\00:04:28.86 That's pound 250 with your phone and ask for that free gift. 00:04:28.90\00:04:32.57 You know, Pastor Doug, probably one of the most important truths 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.07 that we find in scripture centers on the cross, centers on 00:04:35.10\00:04:39.04 that sacrificial death of Jesus and, just, such an 00:04:39.07\00:04:42.38 important truth. 00:04:42.41\00:04:43.75 Well, before we go to the phone lines, we always like to start 00:04:43.78\00:04:45.55 with prayer, and so let's do that now. 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.22 Dear Lord, we thank You for this time once again when we can open 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.22 up the Bible and study together. 00:04:50.25\00:04:51.55 This is Your book. 00:04:51.59\00:04:52.89 Lord, we pray for the Holy Spirit to come and guide us, 00:04:52.92\00:04:54.82 that same Spirit that inspired the prophets many years ago, we 00:04:54.86\00:04:58.66 ask that that Spirit would guide our hearts and our minds, be 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.03 with those who are listening wherever they might be, in 00:05:01.06\00:05:03.33 Jesus's name, amen. 00:05:03.37\00:05:04.70 Doug: Amen. 00:05:05.30\00:05:06.63 Jëan: Well, our first caller this evening, we've got Jerry 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.14 listening in Texas. 00:05:08.17\00:05:09.47 Jerry, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:05:09.50\00:05:12.07 Jerry: Good evening, gentlemen. 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.71 I have a question in my Bible readings this morning and refers 00:05:14.48\00:05:18.98 to Numbers 24 and the interactions between Balak 00:05:19.01\00:05:23.72 and Balaam. 00:05:24.05\00:05:25.42 I don't know if it was in a--maybe an insert from an 00:05:25.82\00:05:29.26 inspired writer, but I thought--I understood that Balak 00:05:29.29\00:05:34.83 used sorcery in a couple of his attempts. 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.87 Can you explain that to me? 00:05:38.37\00:05:40.27 Doug: Yeah, well, you have two characters that are mentioned 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.87 here in the book of Numbers 24 and Balaam was a prophet of God. 00:05:42.90\00:05:48.84 Now, keep in mind, there were some Old Testament prophets. 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.05 They knew the Lord and the Lord spoke to them and they weren't 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.28 necessarily Jews. 00:05:54.32\00:05:55.68 You know, Noah is technically a prophet and he was not a Jew. 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.89 So, in Mesopotamia there was someone who worshiped the true 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.96 God, his name was Balaam, but while he started out good, he 00:06:02.99\00:06:07.76 ended up going bad. 00:06:07.83\00:06:09.10 Well, he was known to the other kings as a man that God 00:06:09.13\00:06:12.53 spoke through. 00:06:12.57\00:06:13.87 And so, Balak, knowing that God was with Israel--Balak was the 00:06:13.90\00:06:16.77 king of the Moabites. 00:06:16.81\00:06:18.14 He thought, look, if I can't defeat them with natural means, 00:06:18.17\00:06:22.84 I'm going to fight fire with fire. 00:06:22.88\00:06:24.65 They've got God with them and maybe I can get a prophet of God 00:06:24.68\00:06:28.18 to curse them. 00:06:28.22\00:06:29.55 That was his reasoning. 00:06:29.58\00:06:30.89 And so, he--you know, they were used to, back then, paying 00:06:30.92\00:06:33.42 psychics and sorcerers to try to cast spells, and they told 00:06:33.86\00:06:38.66 Balaam, "Will you come cast a spell or curse Israel?" 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.53 And he said, "No, God's blessed them, I can't." 00:06:41.56\00:06:43.40 They kept offering him more and more money and he got tempted. 00:06:43.67\00:06:46.53 He wanted the honor and the money they were offering. 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.84 So, he said, "Well, I have to see what the Lord says, but I'll 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.47 go if you, you know, if you insist." 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.07 And so, every time he opens his mouth to try to curse Israel, 00:06:53.88\00:06:57.98 blessings come out. 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.35 In fact, one of the blessings of Balaam is where it said, "A star 00:06:59.38\00:07:03.99 will rise out of Jacob," and it's probably the wise men in 00:07:04.02\00:07:06.55 Mesopotamia where Balaam was from that were reading that when 00:07:06.59\00:07:10.56 they came searching for the Christ child. 00:07:10.59\00:07:12.63 So--but Balaam was not using sorcery. 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.60 Balak, the king of the Moabites, was hoping that he would use 00:07:15.63\00:07:19.37 some kind of witchcraft or sorcery to curse them. 00:07:19.40\00:07:21.97 So, hopefully, that helps a little bit, Jerry. 00:07:22.24\00:07:24.11 It's a very interesting story where the donkey ends up talking 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.74 to the prophet. 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.11 Jëan: All right, thank you. 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.15 The next caller that we have is Isaiah listening in Texas. 00:07:31.18\00:07:33.25 Isaiah, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:07:33.28\00:07:35.02 Isaiah: Yes, hello. 00:07:35.28\00:07:36.62 Thank you, pastors, for both taking my call. 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.62 I appreciate it. 00:07:38.65\00:07:40.02 Doug: And your question. 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.06 Isaiah: Yes. 00:07:42.39\00:07:43.69 Yes, sir. 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.03 My question is referring to Acts 26:24. 00:07:45.06\00:07:47.46 It's referring over to when Paul was feeling beside himself. 00:07:48.23\00:07:53.07 And I guess with all the learning, it was driving 00:07:54.70\00:07:58.21 him insane. 00:07:58.24\00:07:59.57 Could you please elaborate on that? 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.68 Doug: Paul is making his defense before Festus, who is one of the 00:08:01.91\00:08:07.58 Roman rulers that is going to decide whether or not to set him 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.49 free or to punish him or to send him to Rome. 00:08:10.52\00:08:12.92 And as Paul is talking to him about Jesus and the Resurrection 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.46 Festus says, "Paul, you're beside yourself!" 00:08:18.19\00:08:20.56 Beside yourself is a term that's used to mean you've lost 00:08:20.60\00:08:23.77 your mind. 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.13 And he's saying, "You're beside yourself! 00:08:25.17\00:08:27.20 Much learning has driven you mad!" 00:08:27.24\00:08:29.07 Paul was very educated and he said, "You spend too much time 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.47 reading the prophecies and you're getting caught up in it 00:08:31.51\00:08:34.14 and you're not balanced. 00:08:34.18\00:08:35.68 You've gone mad." 00:08:36.11\00:08:37.45 So, while Paul was not beside himself and he was not crazy, 00:08:37.48\00:08:41.78 and though he was very wise, and so he goes on to say in verse 00:08:41.82\00:08:46.62 25, "I am not mad, most noble Festus, but I'm speaking the 00:08:46.65\00:08:51.66 words of truth and reason. 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.19 For the king, before whom I also speak," and he's talking there 00:08:53.66\00:08:57.37 to Agrippa. 00:08:57.40\00:08:58.87 He said, "He knows the words that I say are true." 00:08:58.90\00:09:01.47 So, there's a couple of rulers that are listening to him and 00:09:01.80\00:09:06.17 one of--when he talks about the Resurrection, he says, 00:09:06.21\00:09:08.14 "You're crazy." 00:09:08.18\00:09:09.58 Jëan: You know, if you look at that same passage, there is a 00:09:09.61\00:09:11.81 cross reference where, Paul now, in 1 Corinthians chapter 1, 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.88 verse 21, speaking of Christ and Him crucified, he said, "To the 00:09:14.92\00:09:18.19 Jew, it's a stumbling block and to the Greeks it's foolishness." 00:09:18.22\00:09:22.02 So, you can understand how here you have this Roman governor who 00:09:22.06\00:09:26.36 talks about, or hears about, the Resurrection, he says, 00:09:26.39\00:09:28.66 "That's craziness. 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.03 You're out of your mind." 00:09:30.07\00:09:31.40 Paul said, "Well, to the unbeliever it's foolishness, but 00:09:31.43\00:09:33.54 to those of us who are saved, it's eternal life," you know, 00:09:33.57\00:09:36.17 "it's wonderful promise." 00:09:36.20\00:09:38.21 Doug: Good point. 00:09:38.24\00:09:39.57 Jëan: So, okay, thank you, Isaiah. 00:09:39.61\00:09:40.91 We've got Joan listening in Australia. 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.68 Joan, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.38 Joan: Hello, thank you for taking my call. 00:09:45.08\00:09:46.58 My question tonight is where in the Bible does it say we screen 00:09:47.08\00:09:54.16 or vote people to be members in or out of the church? 00:09:54.19\00:09:57.76 Doug: Well, I don't think you'll find the word vote. 00:09:57.79\00:10:00.83 The teaching that people need to be clear before they're added, 00:10:02.30\00:10:08.44 you know, before baptism, Philip asked--I'm sorry, the Ethiopian 00:10:08.47\00:10:12.27 treasurer asked Philip, and I think this is Acts chapter 8, he 00:10:12.31\00:10:15.64 said, "What prevents me from being baptized?" 00:10:15.68\00:10:17.98 And he said, "Well, if you believe with all your heart," 00:10:18.01\00:10:20.08 that's the one thing, is you got to believe to be part of 00:10:20.12\00:10:22.25 the church. 00:10:22.28\00:10:23.65 You need to be willing to obey God's commandments. 00:10:24.29\00:10:26.69 In Matthew chapter 28 Jesus said, "Go therefore, teach all 00:10:27.06\00:10:30.79 nations," or certain teaching. 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.33 Teaching what? 00:10:32.63\00:10:33.96 He says, "Teaching them to observe all things that I've 00:10:34.00\00:10:35.33 commanded you." 00:10:35.36\00:10:36.60 So, a person should not be part of the church or be baptized if 00:10:36.63\00:10:39.40 they don't believe the commandments of God. 00:10:39.43\00:10:41.17 And then Paul later says that if someone, and Jesus says it also 00:10:41.67\00:10:45.37 in Matthew 18, if someone will not listen to the authority of 00:10:45.41\00:10:49.21 the church, then they should be put out and treated like 00:10:49.24\00:10:52.25 an infidel. 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.12 I think he says a "publican." 00:10:54.15\00:10:55.38 Paul talks in 1 Corinthians 7 about a man that was sleeping 00:10:55.42\00:10:58.35 with his stepmother and he said, "You need to put that man out." 00:10:58.39\00:11:01.66 He was, you know, clearly bringing shame on the cause. 00:11:01.69\00:11:04.93 And so, there's a criteria. 00:11:05.59\00:11:07.86 And then when they were baptized in Acts chapter 2, it says, 00:11:07.93\00:11:10.60 "They were added to the church," and the term they're added 00:11:10.63\00:11:12.97 means, like, brought within the fold, they're becoming part 00:11:13.00\00:11:16.40 of something. 00:11:16.44\00:11:17.74 So you see, there's a criteria for coming in and for going out 00:11:17.77\00:11:22.74 and it's believing the teachings of Jesus. 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.41 Does that make sense, Joan? 00:11:25.45\00:11:27.95 Joan: Thank you. 00:11:27.98\00:11:29.28 Doug: All right, thanks so much. 00:11:29.32\00:11:30.62 Appreciate your question. 00:11:30.65\00:11:31.99 Jëan: All right, we've got Britney listening in California. 00:11:32.02\00:11:33.46 Britney, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:11:33.49\00:11:35.42 Britney: Hey, hey. 00:11:35.89\00:11:37.23 Doug: Hi, how are you doing, Britney? 00:11:37.93\00:11:39.39 Britney: Oh, pretty good. 00:11:40.63\00:11:41.96 Doug: And what's your question tonight? 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.80 Britney: Yeah, my question is, should a Christian celebrate 00:11:45.87\00:11:49.50 Cesar Chavez Day? 00:11:49.84\00:11:51.14 Doug: Well, you know, there's--there are some people 00:11:51.17\00:11:55.21 that are notable in society, you know, there's Martin Luther 00:11:55.24\00:11:59.48 King's Day, they've got President's Day, that is 00:11:59.51\00:12:01.98 actually honoring both Washington and Lincoln. 00:12:02.02\00:12:05.09 So, when you say celebrate, you know, there's no religious 00:12:05.32\00:12:09.22 celebration going on on any of those days. 00:12:09.82\00:12:13.13 People might want to, you know, enjoy and commemorate their 00:12:13.63\00:12:17.93 achievements, but, you know, there's no mandate in the Bible 00:12:17.97\00:12:23.67 to celebrate, I guess, anybody but Jesus. 00:12:24.01\00:12:27.88 Matter of fact, we don't even really have a command to 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.64 remember Christmas. 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.01 That's more of a tradition than a command. 00:12:31.05\00:12:33.25 So, yeah, nothing in the Bible says to celebrate Cesar 00:12:33.82\00:12:38.55 Chavez Day. 00:12:38.59\00:12:39.89 So, hey, thanks Britney. 00:12:39.92\00:12:41.22 I hope that helps. 00:12:41.26\00:12:42.59 Jëan: We've got Deborah in Canada, Deborah, welcome to 00:12:42.62\00:12:43.96 "Bible Answers Live." 00:12:43.99\00:12:45.49 Deborah: Hi, pastors. 00:12:45.53\00:12:46.83 How are you doing? 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.16 Doug: Great. 00:12:48.20\00:12:49.53 Thanks for calling. 00:12:49.56\00:12:50.87 Deborah: Good. 00:12:50.90\00:12:52.20 I have a question about the raven. 00:12:52.23\00:12:53.57 The bird, the raven. 00:12:53.60\00:12:54.94 I know Noah, in Genesis 8:7, let it out of the ark. 00:12:54.97\00:12:59.34 It was the first bird to be let out. 00:12:59.37\00:13:01.31 And in Kings--1 Kings, the raven was--the ravens were used to 00:13:01.88\00:13:07.42 feed Elijah. 00:13:07.45\00:13:08.78 I was just wondering if there was any significance as to why 00:13:08.82\00:13:13.66 God would choose, what we know in the Mosaic Law, as an 00:13:13.69\00:13:17.23 unclean bird. 00:13:17.26\00:13:18.56 Doug: Yeah, that is interesting. 00:13:18.59\00:13:19.89 I think that the reason that the Lord chose the raven is, first 00:13:19.93\00:13:25.20 of all, Elijah and Noah were not told to eat ravens. 00:13:25.23\00:13:28.37 The ravens are probably--they're in the corvid family and they're 00:13:29.77\00:13:33.24 the smartest--one of the smartest birds. 00:13:33.27\00:13:36.04 I think their intelligence is, they say, even above a dog. 00:13:36.08\00:13:39.48 They know how to use tools. 00:13:39.85\00:13:41.45 They live a long time. 00:13:41.88\00:13:43.35 They grieve when another raven dies. 00:13:43.39\00:13:45.69 And they can actually--some ravens can learn to mimic 00:13:46.12\00:13:49.76 certain sounds like, you know, parrots do. 00:13:49.79\00:13:52.93 So, they're extremely bright birds and I think God guided 00:13:53.29\00:13:57.97 them into the palace of Ahab to take food from Ahab and bring it 00:13:58.00\00:14:02.44 to Elijah. 00:14:02.47\00:14:03.81 I can't prove that, but it's fun to think. 00:14:03.84\00:14:05.21 So, yeah. 00:14:06.01\00:14:07.51 And they're--what do you call it? 00:14:08.18\00:14:09.78 Ravens are kind of omnivores, so they could bring 00:14:09.81\00:14:11.81 almost anything. 00:14:11.85\00:14:13.21 Yeah, it's not like a hummingbird, it's just going to 00:14:13.68\00:14:15.15 get nectar. 00:14:15.18\00:14:16.48 Jëan: And it's a big bird, so it can carry. 00:14:16.52\00:14:17.85 Doug: Yeah, that's true. 00:14:17.89\00:14:19.25 Jëan: All right, thank you, Deborah. 00:14:19.89\00:14:21.22 Good point. 00:14:21.26\00:14:22.59 We've got Gary in Illinois. 00:14:22.62\00:14:23.93 Gary, welcome to the program. 00:14:23.96\00:14:25.26 Gary: Thank you. 00:14:25.29\00:14:26.63 Are we entering the first trumpet judgment, you know, 00:14:26.66\00:14:28.43 considering the recent extreme weather like wildfires in Texas 00:14:28.46\00:14:33.20 and hail storms? 00:14:33.23\00:14:34.64 I get this from Revelation 8:7. 00:14:34.67\00:14:37.01 Doug: Yeah, I don't know, Pastor Ross, you want to--? 00:14:37.37\00:14:39.67 Jëan: I can read the verse. 00:14:40.08\00:14:41.41 It says, "And the first angel sounded: and there was hail, 00:14:41.44\00:14:42.91 followed with--mingled with blood," and it says, "they were 00:14:42.94\00:14:45.48 thrown to the earth, and a third of the trees were burnt up, and 00:14:45.51\00:14:48.08 the green grass was burnt up." 00:14:48.12\00:14:50.02 Of course, the book of Revelation is a prophetic book 00:14:50.49\00:14:53.19 and it's filled with symbols, right, from the very beginning 00:14:53.22\00:14:55.82 of the book all the way to the end. 00:14:55.86\00:14:57.23 You talk about horses galloping across the sky and you've got a 00:14:57.66\00:15:00.90 red horse and a white horse and a black horse and a pale horse 00:15:00.93\00:15:03.77 and a lot of symbolisms that you find in the book--. 00:15:03.80\00:15:06.90 Doug: Dragon with seven heads, you don't see that every day. 00:15:06.94\00:15:08.40 Jëan: Yeah, that's right, and beasts coming up from the sea 00:15:08.44\00:15:09.90 and the earth and--so, yeah, this is part of the trumpets and 00:15:09.94\00:15:12.74 the trumpets kind of go through the history from the time of 00:15:12.77\00:15:16.01 Christ all the way through until our time. 00:15:16.04\00:15:18.61 And the fifth trumpet, it's got--talking about trees being 00:15:18.65\00:15:21.35 burnt up and green grass being burnt up. 00:15:21.38\00:15:23.49 In the Bible, trees are often associated with people and green 00:15:23.52\00:15:26.62 grass would be a symbol for people, once again, or large 00:15:26.65\00:15:30.86 groups of people. 00:15:30.89\00:15:32.19 It's really talking about a judgment that was to come upon 00:15:32.23\00:15:34.83 those part of the Roman Empire that had persecuted 00:15:34.86\00:15:38.93 the Christians. 00:15:38.97\00:15:40.27 There was attacks from the various barbarian tribes that 00:15:40.30\00:15:42.84 entered the land. 00:15:42.87\00:15:44.21 You also have the Muslim tribes, or the Muslim movement, under 00:15:44.24\00:15:47.44 the Ottoman Empire and the Turks that were coming in, entering 00:15:47.48\00:15:50.88 into Europe. 00:15:50.91\00:15:52.21 So, that had a broader historical application with 00:15:52.25\00:15:55.38 reference to this fifth trumpet, not so much a 00:15:55.42\00:15:57.89 literal application. 00:15:57.92\00:15:59.25 Although, you know, the Bible does speak about the earth 00:15:59.29\00:16:01.06 getting old like a garment and it talks about the sea and the 00:16:01.09\00:16:04.26 waves roaring as signs connected with the coming of Christ or 00:16:04.29\00:16:07.36 close to the coming of Christ. 00:16:07.40\00:16:08.93 And yes, there are changes in our environment and I think 00:16:08.96\00:16:12.13 there are signs. 00:16:12.17\00:16:13.47 Bible speaks of earthquakes in divers places, so there are 00:16:13.50\00:16:16.20 things happening in the natural world that are warning signs as 00:16:16.24\00:16:19.77 to the imminent coming of Christ. 00:16:19.81\00:16:21.31 Doug: Yeah, and, of course, it tells us in Revelation that God 00:16:22.01\00:16:26.65 will destroy those that destroy the earth. 00:16:26.68\00:16:28.78 And you can just see that the fires and everything that's 00:16:29.32\00:16:34.02 happening, a lot of them are man made. 00:16:34.06\00:16:35.42 Jëan: And of course, things are a little different nowadays. 00:16:35.72\00:16:37.69 You know, back 100, 200 years ago, these forest fires would 00:16:37.73\00:16:41.23 burn almost all summer long in the mountains here in California 00:16:41.26\00:16:44.80 and they would burn out a lot of the underbrush. 00:16:45.03\00:16:47.10 Whereas, you know--. 00:16:47.50\00:16:48.80 Doug: The trees were big and they'd survive. 00:16:48.84\00:16:50.34 Jëan: Yeah, we're putting fires out and so it's only increasing 00:16:50.37\00:16:52.81 the vegetation that can burn. 00:16:52.84\00:16:54.38 It's dry, and so, yeah, things have changed. 00:16:54.41\00:16:57.11 The environment has changed. 00:16:57.48\00:16:58.78 Doug: All right, well, thank you. 00:16:58.81\00:17:00.18 Appreciate that, Gary. 00:17:00.22\00:17:01.52 Jëan: We've got Glenn listening in Ohio. 00:17:01.55\00:17:02.85 Glenn, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:17:02.88\00:17:04.19 Glenn: Thanks again for taking my call. 00:17:04.22\00:17:06.52 You know, when God spoke to Noah in the 11th chapter of Genesis, 00:17:07.49\00:17:11.36 He told him to get busy and replenish the earth. 00:17:11.39\00:17:15.00 And all translations agree with that replenishing of the earth, 00:17:15.76\00:17:19.43 but when you go to Genesis 1:28 where Yahweh is speaking to Adam 00:17:19.87\00:17:24.74 and Eve, He tells them also, according to the King James 00:17:24.77\00:17:28.34 translation, to replenish the earth. 00:17:28.38\00:17:30.68 I see that as either a blemish in the King James Version of the 00:17:31.48\00:17:34.62 Bible or something else that needs to be talked about. 00:17:34.65\00:17:37.49 Can you help me? 00:17:37.52\00:17:38.82 Doug: Yeah, well, when God tells him to fill the--the word I've 00:17:38.85\00:17:42.79 got, and I'm reading the New King James, He said that "they 00:17:42.82\00:17:46.39 should fill the earth." 00:17:46.43\00:17:47.76 And you know, God told Adam and Eve, "I want you to populate 00:17:48.36\00:17:52.20 the earth." 00:17:52.23\00:17:53.57 Originally, they were in the garden, after sin they were 00:17:53.60\00:17:55.14 evicted from the garden. 00:17:55.17\00:17:56.50 Are you thinking that there was maybe a population before Adam 00:17:57.01\00:18:01.14 and Eve that needed to be replaced? 00:18:01.18\00:18:02.81 Glenn: I think that might be worth the consideration because 00:18:04.11\00:18:07.25 it's the only translation that talks about Adam and Eve, the 00:18:07.28\00:18:11.12 replenishing the earth. 00:18:11.49\00:18:13.09 Doug: Yeah, well, I think, like I said, this translation--and by 00:18:14.32\00:18:19.26 the way, there--the King James translation, while it is 00:18:19.29\00:18:22.86 wonderful, is not perfect. 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.37 It was done by men. 00:18:25.40\00:18:26.77 They were not angels that translated the King James Bible. 00:18:26.80\00:18:30.01 And there are a couple of places where they maybe didn't have the 00:18:30.04\00:18:32.61 best choice of words or there's some inconsistency. 00:18:32.64\00:18:35.41 This is a place where I think that the word "be fruitful and 00:18:35.64\00:18:38.38 fill the earth" is more appropriate because there's 00:18:38.41\00:18:40.78 nothing in the Genesis record that says that there was a 00:18:40.82\00:18:44.35 civilization before Adam and Eve that needed to be replaced. 00:18:44.39\00:18:47.79 It's--goes sequentially from the days of Creation to Adam's 00:18:47.82\00:18:51.76 creation to Eve to the Fall. 00:18:51.79\00:18:53.83 There's no other scenario of some other race that was wiped 00:18:54.30\00:18:59.17 out that needed to be replaced, that you can squeeze in there. 00:18:59.20\00:19:02.80 Jëan: Sin, the consequence of sin, is death and we know, 00:19:02.84\00:19:05.37 according to the Bible, that sin started with Adam and Eve. 00:19:05.41\00:19:08.58 Doug: There's no death before that. 00:19:09.24\00:19:10.55 Jëan: Yeah, if they were the ones to replenish the earth, 00:19:10.58\00:19:12.01 meaning they were to replace a population beforehand that had 00:19:12.05\00:19:14.75 died, how would they have died if there had been no sin? 00:19:14.78\00:19:18.09 So. 00:19:18.12\00:19:19.42 Doug: Good point. 00:19:19.45\00:19:20.79 Jëan: And if you look at the other translations, it says, "Be 00:19:20.82\00:19:22.42 fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it." 00:19:22.46\00:19:24.53 So, I think that's a better translation there. 00:19:25.06\00:19:27.30 Next caller that we have is Henry, listening in New York. 00:19:27.60\00:19:29.83 Henry, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:19:29.86\00:19:31.83 My question is, if you go to heaven and your name is written 00:19:31.87\00:19:35.37 in the book of life, do you have to take communion before you get 00:19:35.40\00:19:39.24 into heaven? 00:19:39.27\00:19:40.61 Doug: Well, it--you know, Jesus does say in the, I think it's 00:19:40.64\00:19:43.41 both the Gospel of Matthew, it's repeated in 2 Corinthians, that 00:19:43.45\00:19:48.08 the Lord's Supper, celebrating the--and the Lord's Supper was 00:19:48.12\00:19:53.02 like an extension of the Passover. 00:19:53.05\00:19:54.59 The Passover was, you know, this angel of judgment passes over 00:19:54.62\00:19:58.26 because of the blood of the Lamb. 00:19:58.29\00:19:59.66 Well, when Jesus comes, He knows He is the Passover Lamb, and He 00:19:59.93\00:20:03.63 said, "Except you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no 00:20:03.67\00:20:06.87 life in you," John chapter 6-- So, that's talking about--it's a 00:20:06.90\00:20:11.01 symbol for accepting the life of Jesus and that His blood would 00:20:11.04\00:20:15.34 cleanse us from sin and the teachings of the New Testament, 00:20:15.38\00:20:18.48 the new covenant, that's what the grape juice is a symbol of. 00:20:18.51\00:20:21.88 So, a believer should want to participate, first of all, in 00:20:22.38\00:20:27.16 being part of a church family and communion. 00:20:27.19\00:20:29.86 Now, in our church sometimes we've got some seniors 00:20:29.89\00:20:32.49 that--well, I guess every church you have some people that are 00:20:32.53\00:20:34.73 shut ins, they can't make it. 00:20:34.76\00:20:36.10 And when we have communion, we have elders and pastors that'll 00:20:36.43\00:20:38.87 go and take it to their home and--so that they 00:20:38.90\00:20:41.64 can participate. 00:20:41.67\00:20:43.00 But it--there's only a couple of sacred ordinances that Jesus 00:20:43.04\00:20:45.81 left the church and one of them is baptism. 00:20:45.84\00:20:48.64 Of course, you got marriage, baptism, and you've got the 00:20:49.21\00:20:52.75 communion service. 00:20:52.78\00:20:54.12 So, it's certainly--it's a ratification of our faith that 00:20:54.42\00:21:00.22 should be repeated whenever the church comes together in 00:21:00.26\00:21:03.56 that capacity. 00:21:03.59\00:21:05.23 Jëan: Okay, thank you. 00:21:05.26\00:21:06.59 Doug: Do you have to know it? 00:21:06.63\00:21:07.96 Do you have to do that to go to heaven? 00:21:07.96\00:21:09.26 There'll be people in heaven that maybe didn't have an 00:21:09.30\00:21:10.60 opportunity, for sure. 00:21:10.63\00:21:11.97 But why a believer would not want to is a concern. 00:21:12.00\00:21:15.64 Jëan: Okay, all right. 00:21:16.04\00:21:17.37 We got Lloyd in Arkansas. 00:21:17.41\00:21:18.74 Lloyd, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:21:18.77\00:21:20.58 Lloyd: Hello, thank you for having me on and to answer 00:21:20.81\00:21:24.48 my question. 00:21:24.51\00:21:25.85 My question is, is God protecting Satan? 00:21:26.28\00:21:30.05 And if so, what is He protecting him from? 00:21:30.29\00:21:33.82 Doug: Well, when you say is God protecting Satan, Satan is 00:21:34.29\00:21:37.43 living under an impending judgment and Satan is also--he 00:21:37.46\00:21:43.10 is restricted in what he can access. 00:21:43.40\00:21:45.93 The Bible tells us in Revelation 12 that Satan was cast down to 00:21:45.97\00:21:50.57 the earth. 00:21:50.61\00:21:51.94 So, the devil's rebellion against God has been limited to 00:21:51.97\00:21:54.38 our planet. 00:21:54.41\00:21:55.74 And so, as far as God protecting him, well, God gives all of His 00:21:55.78\00:22:00.75 creatures life and people that choose to turn away from God, 00:22:00.78\00:22:05.62 their initial life comes from God. 00:22:05.65\00:22:07.56 He doesn't--God does not exterminate somebody as soon as 00:22:07.59\00:22:10.63 they say, "I don't love You anymore." 00:22:10.66\00:22:12.03 Otherwise, we'd see half the--more than half the 00:22:12.26\00:22:15.00 population would expire right away. 00:22:15.03\00:22:16.87 So, people are sustained by God, He's the one who gives grace to 00:22:17.23\00:22:21.84 the people that even curse Him. 00:22:21.87\00:22:24.07 They couldn't live or take another breath or have another 00:22:24.11\00:22:26.04 heartbeat without God. 00:22:26.07\00:22:27.41 So, in that sense, the devil is still sustained by the initial 00:22:27.44\00:22:30.08 life God gave him, but the devil is not being protected by God. 00:22:30.11\00:22:34.18 I don't think he needs much protection as far as--he's the 00:22:34.22\00:22:38.55 highest of the angels. 00:22:38.59\00:22:39.89 There's no other angel that's harassing him in that way. 00:22:39.92\00:22:43.09 So, I don't know. 00:22:43.99\00:22:45.29 Hopefully I'm answering your question, Lloyd. 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.20 Lloyd: Pastor, thank you very much. 00:22:47.50\00:22:48.93 Doug: All right, thanks so much. 00:22:48.96\00:22:50.27 You take care. 00:22:50.30\00:22:51.63 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Efrank in 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.64 New York. 00:22:53.67\00:22:54.97 Efrank, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:22:55.00\00:22:56.34 Efrank: Good evening, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:22:56.37\00:22:59.27 I have a question in regards to the Bible about an issue that 00:22:59.57\00:23:05.38 has to do with how you believe in Jesus on certain occasions. 00:23:05.41\00:23:11.42 There's this South African woman who told me that the way Jesus 00:23:12.49\00:23:17.36 revealed Himself during the persecution of Herod in Africa, 00:23:17.39\00:23:22.03 that she has the right to celebrate and display a 00:23:22.36\00:23:25.73 understanding of her symbolic adherence to what Jesus did 00:23:25.77\00:23:30.71 in Namur. 00:23:32.01\00:23:33.38 Now, I have always believed in the--what Jesus preached 00:23:33.41\00:23:37.55 in Galilee. 00:23:37.58\00:23:38.91 And I just want to know, Pastor Doug, in the Bible, does it say 00:23:39.25\00:23:43.28 that we have to wear any type of apparel or indicative symbols 00:23:43.32\00:23:49.32 indicating that we're Christians and we believe in God and the 00:23:50.56\00:23:54.36 Bible that way? 00:23:54.36\00:23:55.66 Because in the Bible it says that it's harder for a rich man 00:23:55.70\00:23:58.80 to enter the kingdom of God than someone who is poor. 00:23:58.83\00:24:02.47 Doug: Yeah. 00:24:02.80\00:24:04.14 All right, so is there any criteria on what we should or 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.34 shouldn't wear given in the Bible? 00:24:06.37\00:24:08.18 You know, God does not order us to wear a particular costume. 00:24:08.51\00:24:12.21 Now, when the priests--in the Old Testament, there was a 00:24:12.25\00:24:15.35 certain apparel that the priests would wear. 00:24:15.38\00:24:17.62 Of course, the purpose of the Old Testament temple has 00:24:17.65\00:24:20.89 been fulfilled. 00:24:20.92\00:24:22.26 When Christ died on the cross, the veil was rent, Jesus said, 00:24:22.29\00:24:25.19 "Your house has left you desolate," and so the Aaronic 00:24:25.23\00:24:30.07 priesthood right now does not exist in that they're not 00:24:30.10\00:24:33.40 sacrificing lambs. 00:24:33.44\00:24:34.77 So, there's no uniform. 00:24:34.80\00:24:36.14 There are principles that God gives in His Word for every 00:24:36.17\00:24:38.61 believer and those principles have to do with 00:24:38.64\00:24:41.28 neatness, modesty. 00:24:41.61\00:24:44.08 The Bible tells us that, you know, we should not be wearing, 00:24:45.01\00:24:48.88 and this is men and women, should not be adorned with the 00:24:48.92\00:24:51.45 outward adorning of gold and apparel and costly ra--. 00:24:51.49\00:24:55.89 And Paul talks about, you know, women wearing pearls and having 00:24:56.12\00:25:00.36 elaborate hairdos. 00:25:00.40\00:25:01.70 You know, God's people shouldn't dress so frumpy that we attract 00:25:02.06\00:25:06.97 attentions because of our being out of date, but we also 00:25:07.00\00:25:11.01 shouldn't try and be impressing people with our money by the 00:25:11.04\00:25:14.54 clothes we wear. 00:25:14.58\00:25:15.88 There should be humility in that. 00:25:15.91\00:25:17.88 Neat, clean, modest, those are the principles that God shares. 00:25:18.11\00:25:21.65 We got a book on that, by the way, on--"Jewelry: How Much is 00:25:21.68\00:25:25.59 Too Much?" 00:25:25.62\00:25:26.96 A person can get when they call the resource line. 00:25:26.99\00:25:29.22 Jëan: The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:25:29.26\00:25:32.39 You can ask for that book. 00:25:32.43\00:25:33.76 It's called, "Jewelry: How Much is Too Much?" 00:25:33.80\00:25:36.20 And we'll be happy to send it to anyone in Canada or the US. 00:25:36.23\00:25:38.97 So, call and ask. 00:25:39.00\00:25:40.34 Doug: All right, friends. 00:25:40.37\00:25:41.67 We're getting ready for our half time break, so we want to 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.41 encourage you to pay attention to these important messages that 00:25:45.44\00:25:48.08 are coming. 00:25:48.11\00:25:49.44 We'll be back taking more Bible questions in just a few moments. 00:25:49.48\00:25:52.05 male announcer: Stay tuned. 00:25:55.78\00:25:57.09 "Bible Answers Live" will return shortly. 00:25:57.12\00:25:59.42 Diamond Garcia: Hi, my name is Diamond Garcia and I'm from the 00:26:03.49\00:26:05.76 beautiful islands of Hawaii. 00:26:05.79\00:26:07.30 I was raised in a very dysfunctional family, like 00:26:07.60\00:26:11.40 most families. 00:26:11.43\00:26:12.80 Being in that environment, I would lie, cheat, steal, rob 00:26:12.83\00:26:16.84 houses, cheat in school and tests, and lying to teachers and 00:26:16.87\00:26:21.04 getting into fights and all kinds of stuff. 00:26:21.08\00:26:23.78 One day, I was asked to take this little box of something and 00:26:24.91\00:26:28.62 I had to walk down the road and give it to someone and they 00:26:28.65\00:26:31.49 would give me money and I would walk back home, and I later 00:26:31.52\00:26:33.56 realized I was dealing drugs. 00:26:33.59\00:26:35.69 Growing up in that environment, I thought that, you know, being 00:26:37.59\00:26:40.63 an adult was a life of drinking and smoking and partying, and 00:26:40.66\00:26:43.63 that's just what adults did. 00:26:43.67\00:26:45.00 When I looked at my family and saw the road that they were 00:26:47.17\00:26:49.87 going down, getting arrested, getting beaten up, coming home 00:26:49.90\00:26:53.84 drunk and puking all over the floor, I just didn't want that 00:26:53.88\00:26:57.41 for myself. 00:26:57.45\00:26:58.78 Growing up, I had a grandma who was baptized as a Christian in 00:26:59.41\00:27:03.05 her 20s, but then she wasn't a real practicing Christian. 00:27:03.08\00:27:06.12 And so, one day I was at her house and there was a box of 00:27:06.79\00:27:09.46 various books and I went to the bottom of that box and found a 00:27:09.49\00:27:12.56 book called, "The Great Controversy." 00:27:12.59\00:27:14.50 And I picked it up and I said, "This is interesting," and I 00:27:15.03\00:27:17.83 opened to the first page of that book and it said, "If thou hadst 00:27:17.87\00:27:21.74 known," I had no clue what it meant. 00:27:21.77\00:27:24.41 And so I said, "You know what, forget this." 00:27:24.77\00:27:26.47 I put the book down, I just walked away, did my thing. 00:27:27.01\00:27:29.61 But then something told me, "You know, Diamond, go back to 00:27:29.64\00:27:32.15 that book." 00:27:32.18\00:27:33.48 And so I went back to the book, picked it up, went to the last 00:27:33.52\00:27:36.55 two chapters and I read it. 00:27:36.58\00:27:38.22 And I said to my grandmother, I said, "What church is this from? 00:27:39.49\00:27:42.89 I want to go to that church." 00:27:42.92\00:27:44.23 So, she brought me down to the local church and then I walk in 00:27:44.26\00:27:47.30 from the back door and the piano is off key, people are off key. 00:27:47.30\00:27:51.00 It's like, man, this is really, kind of, I don't want to 00:27:51.03\00:27:54.00 be here. 00:27:54.04\00:27:55.40 And I got to the front of the church and I sat down, I was 00:27:56.00\00:27:58.34 listening to the sermon, and the whole service, it was so boring 00:27:58.37\00:28:01.04 to me. 00:28:01.08\00:28:02.31 But then someone gives me this set of DVDs and it was called, 00:28:02.34\00:28:06.15 "The Prophecy Code." 00:28:06.18\00:28:07.52 It was through watching Doug Batchelor explain the truths 00:28:09.02\00:28:12.35 found in the Bible that really brought me to Christ and brought 00:28:12.39\00:28:15.36 me to realize that you know what, there is a life better 00:28:15.39\00:28:18.96 than my family's life. 00:28:18.99\00:28:20.40 My second week at church on Sabbath there was one 00:28:21.23\00:28:24.13 person there. 00:28:24.17\00:28:25.47 He basically told me, "Hey, Diamond, do you want to make 00:28:25.50\00:28:27.60 some money?" 00:28:27.64\00:28:28.97 And I said, "Sure." 00:28:29.00\00:28:30.34 I said, "What do you do?" 00:28:30.37\00:28:31.67 He says, "Well, I'm a call porter. 00:28:31.71\00:28:33.01 We go door to door and we sell Christian books." 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.21 I said, "Oh, okay. 00:28:35.24\00:28:36.78 Well, that sounds interesting. 00:28:36.81\00:28:38.11 I do want to make some money, too." 00:28:38.15\00:28:39.58 And so he said, "Okay, well, why don't you come with me?" 00:28:39.61\00:28:41.98 We drove out to the neighborhood, parked the car, 00:28:42.68\00:28:45.82 and that night was just raining, it was pouring and pouring. 00:28:45.85\00:28:48.79 It could not stop raining. 00:28:48.82\00:28:50.36 He prayed, he said, "God, this is Diamond's first night. 00:28:50.39\00:28:52.83 If it's Your will, stop the rain so we can go knocking on doors." 00:28:53.13\00:28:56.46 And as soon as he said, "Amen," the rain just stopped. 00:28:56.50\00:28:59.17 I was just thinking in my head, is this guy a prophet or what? 00:28:59.50\00:29:03.07 I mean, he just prayed and asked God and it happened. 00:29:03.10\00:29:07.21 And so, I was so happy, I grabbed the books and I went to 00:29:07.24\00:29:10.25 the first door, and the first door I went to the person gave 00:29:10.28\00:29:12.55 me $50. 00:29:12.58\00:29:14.02 That night was actually a big night for me because it was 00:29:14.05\00:29:16.85 where I saw God's power work in stopping the rain and people 00:29:16.89\00:29:20.99 actually giving me lots of money. 00:29:21.02\00:29:22.92 I then became a call porter, or a canvasser, and I saved money 00:29:23.29\00:29:25.99 to pay for my way through academy. 00:29:26.03\00:29:28.00 And when my church began to see how God was using me, they 00:29:28.03\00:29:32.27 immediately recognized that it was God's Spirit moving, and 00:29:32.30\00:29:35.04 they put me, you know, preaching and teaching and sharing 00:29:35.07\00:29:37.67 my faith. 00:29:37.71\00:29:39.04 And I've been engaged in ministry for the past six to 00:29:39.07\00:29:41.01 seven years now and God has taken me all over the world on 00:29:41.04\00:29:43.88 multiple continents, sharing my testimony, how God has brought 00:29:43.91\00:29:46.85 me out of darkness into His marvelous light. 00:29:46.88\00:29:49.78 It's a total contrast as to how it was before. 00:29:50.42\00:29:52.75 And now, you know, it's a total contrast. 00:29:52.79\00:29:55.02 My name is Diamond and Amazing Facts has helped to change 00:29:56.42\00:29:59.56 my life. 00:29:59.59\00:30:01.70 ¤¤¤ 00:30:01.73\00:30:07.27 male announcer: You're listening to "Bible Answers Live" listening in Texas and he's got a question 00:31:57.45\00:31:59.95 about watching Christian programs. 00:32:00.05\00:32:02.18 Preston, welcome to the program. 00:32:02.22\00:32:03.65 Preston: Hello. 00:32:04.92\00:32:06.25 Doug: Hi, thanks for calling. 00:32:06.29\00:32:07.66 Preston: Yes, so my question was, is it wrong for Christians 00:32:08.86\00:32:12.16 to watch Christian programs like "The Chosen," the TV show, 00:32:12.19\00:32:16.77 "The Chosen?" 00:32:16.80\00:32:18.13 Doug: All right, well, I'm a little biased if you ask about 00:32:18.17\00:32:21.84 watching Christian programs because we're producing one at 00:32:21.87\00:32:24.61 this very moment. 00:32:24.64\00:32:26.04 So, there's no sin in taking in spiritual material, whether 00:32:26.07\00:32:31.68 you're reading or whether you're watching or listening. 00:32:31.71\00:32:34.35 TV is just one of the mediums that communicates. 00:32:34.38\00:32:37.12 And so, that's a very powerful medium. 00:32:37.69\00:32:40.09 At the same time, you want to, you know, have a filter about 00:32:40.12\00:32:43.86 what you do and don't watch. 00:32:43.89\00:32:45.43 There are some Christian programs out there that I don't 00:32:45.73\00:32:48.16 watch they're, you know, these pastors, quite frankly, that 00:32:48.20\00:32:51.53 they--they're doing this prosperity gospel. 00:32:51.57\00:32:53.67 I think it's extortion of a type, spiritual extortion. 00:32:53.70\00:32:56.87 And--you notice, we don't spend a lot of time begging for money 00:32:57.41\00:33:01.01 on this program and promising people fame and fortune and 00:33:01.04\00:33:04.18 health and wealth if they do. 00:33:04.21\00:33:05.85 So, I--there's some things I won't watch because I just think 00:33:05.88\00:33:08.38 they're so unbiblical. 00:33:08.42\00:33:09.75 There's some good ministries and ministers out there. 00:33:09.78\00:33:11.89 I don't expect them to agree with me in every point. 00:33:11.92\00:33:13.92 And they, they've got a lot of great material and so you kind 00:33:14.19\00:33:18.46 of eat the melon and you spit out the seeds. 00:33:18.49\00:33:20.50 And they probably feel that way about me. 00:33:20.53\00:33:22.06 Now, when you're talking about The Chosen--and I've only seen 00:33:23.33\00:33:26.00 it, to be honest, a few excerpts. 00:33:26.03\00:33:27.77 I've found, in my own experience, Pastor Ross may have 00:33:28.77\00:33:31.64 some thoughts on this, that when Hollywood tries to recreate 00:33:31.67\00:33:35.81 Jesus or biblical stories, they almost never can get close to 00:33:35.84\00:33:40.35 the real thing or it's always distorted in one way or 00:33:40.38\00:33:43.85 the other. 00:33:43.89\00:33:45.22 I have some good things come out of that. 00:33:45.25\00:33:46.79 Well, I'm sure there are people that haven't thought about the 00:33:46.82\00:33:48.82 life and teachings of Jesus that watch this and you could point 00:33:48.86\00:33:51.86 to some good things. 00:33:51.89\00:33:53.26 I--but personally, I think that there's a danger when we start 00:33:54.10\00:33:59.53 getting our information about Christ and His ministry, from 00:33:59.57\00:34:02.47 what I've known, someone told me I should watch it. 00:34:02.50\00:34:04.57 I watched a little bit and I saw right away they were 00:34:04.61\00:34:08.04 embellishing the story with things that were not in the 00:34:08.08\00:34:11.05 Bible, which is always suspect. 00:34:11.08\00:34:13.48 But, you know, I'm not here to condemn. 00:34:14.18\00:34:16.85 I commend people that are trying to communicate the gospel. 00:34:17.09\00:34:20.29 I don't know, that's a rambling answer, but--any thoughts? 00:34:21.02\00:34:24.89 You want to ramble? 00:34:24.93\00:34:26.26 Jëan: You know, Pastor Doug, it, you know, it's--. 00:34:26.29\00:34:27.60 Doug: You'll go out on a limb with me? 00:34:27.66\00:34:28.93 Jëan: Well, I think they actually say that they're not 00:34:28.96\00:34:31.23 trying to be perfectly faithful to, you know, what the 00:34:31.27\00:34:34.87 Bible says. 00:34:34.90\00:34:36.24 They do take liberties to kind of add in and, you know, there's 00:34:36.27\00:34:40.94 some extra stories added, extra personalities added, that's not 00:34:40.98\00:34:44.58 in the gospel account and--on the one hand, you got to be 00:34:44.61\00:34:48.95 careful because, you know, the Bible talks about a really true 00:34:48.98\00:34:52.15 story, something that really happened. 00:34:52.19\00:34:53.79 When you read about the gospel, you read about Christ, you read 00:34:53.82\00:34:55.89 about the apostles. 00:34:55.92\00:34:57.29 That's history, that's real. 00:34:57.69\00:34:59.59 You don't want to create the scene where that almost becomes 00:34:59.63\00:35:02.86 more of a novel type scenario. 00:35:03.16\00:35:05.23 So, yeah. 00:35:05.27\00:35:06.60 I agree, Pastor, we got to be careful. 00:35:06.63\00:35:07.97 Doug: You start embellishing on the truth and people can get 00:35:08.00\00:35:11.64 distracted by the embellishment and miss the main point, so. 00:35:11.67\00:35:15.81 Jëan: All right, thank you, Preston. 00:35:16.08\00:35:17.41 Doug: A verse in the Bible, Philippians 4, verse 8. 00:35:17.45\00:35:19.28 "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true," and he goes on 00:35:19.31\00:35:22.95 to say, "dwell on these things," yeah. 00:35:22.98\00:35:24.92 Doug: Okay, next caller that we have is Sandra listening in 00:35:25.45\00:35:27.76 Pennsylvania and she's got a question about Joshua and the 00:35:27.79\00:35:31.19 angel that you read about in Zachariah 3, Sandra, welcome to 00:35:31.23\00:35:34.60 the program. 00:35:34.63\00:35:36.00 Sandra: Hi, good evening. 00:35:36.40\00:35:37.70 Thank you for taking my call. 00:35:37.73\00:35:39.03 Doug: Evening. 00:35:39.07\00:35:40.54 Sandra: Hi there. 00:35:40.57\00:35:41.87 So, the other day--recently, I heard a sermon in regards to 00:35:41.90\00:35:45.74 Zechariah chapter 3--Wonderful sermon and--but I was a little 00:35:45.77\00:35:50.95 confused as to who Joshua is and who the angel of the Lord is 00:35:50.98\00:35:57.59 because I always thought that Joshua represents Christ and 00:35:57.62\00:36:01.02 that also the angel of the Lord also represents 00:36:01.06\00:36:04.63 Christ pre-incarnate. 00:36:04.66\00:36:05.99 So, I was just trying to figure out, you know, who's represented 00:36:07.10\00:36:11.07 in that chapter. 00:36:11.10\00:36:12.43 Doug: All right, good. 00:36:12.67\00:36:14.00 Well, in Zechariah chapter 3, there's a vision that says, "He 00:36:14.04\00:36:16.54 showed me Joshua," this is verse 1, "the high priest standing 00:36:16.57\00:36:19.97 before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right 00:36:20.01\00:36:23.21 hand to oppose," or that word is to accuse, "him." 00:36:23.24\00:36:25.81 You go to Revelation chapter 12, it calls Satan the accuser of 00:36:26.08\00:36:29.55 the brethren. 00:36:29.58\00:36:30.89 And in the book of Job, there's the devil accusing Job 00:36:30.92\00:36:33.29 before God. 00:36:33.32\00:36:34.66 And the devil is our accuser and Christ is our defense attorney. 00:36:34.69\00:36:37.89 So, the angel of the Lord is the one that rebukes the devil 00:36:38.26\00:36:41.76 in Zechariah. 00:36:41.80\00:36:43.10 Now, there really was a high priest in Israel during 00:36:43.13\00:36:45.77 Zachariah's time and his name was Joshua. 00:36:45.80\00:36:47.50 It's interesting, the name Joshua is the name Jesus 00:36:48.07\00:36:51.17 in Hebrew. 00:36:51.21\00:36:52.54 It's actually Yeshua. 00:36:52.57\00:36:53.88 And you've got Joshua who led the children of Israel into the 00:36:53.91\00:36:56.81 Promised Land, he's like our general and our judge. 00:36:56.85\00:37:02.12 And then you got Joshua the high priest that led the children of 00:37:02.48\00:37:05.02 Israel from Babylon back to the Promised Land. 00:37:05.05\00:37:07.62 So, they're both types of Christ and the priest would bear the 00:37:07.66\00:37:10.66 sins of the people. 00:37:10.69\00:37:12.03 So, Joshua's got these dirty clothes because of the sins of 00:37:12.06\00:37:14.20 the people and the devil's accusing. 00:37:14.23\00:37:16.40 And in the story, his filthy clothes are taken away by the 00:37:16.67\00:37:20.57 angel of the Lord and he's given clean garments, and it's a 00:37:20.60\00:37:24.27 symbol of the cleansing from sin. 00:37:24.31\00:37:26.41 So, you're pretty close from what you said, Sandra, to having 00:37:26.64\00:37:30.65 the right interpretation. 00:37:30.68\00:37:32.01 I'm not sure what you may have heard someone else say, but 00:37:32.05\00:37:34.92 yeah, this is a story about the plan of salvation and tells us 00:37:35.82\00:37:39.65 that the angel of the Lord stood by and he said, "Now," you can 00:37:39.69\00:37:43.19 read in verse 6, "Now, if you'll walk in my ways," this is after 00:37:43.22\00:37:46.66 his filthy garments were taken away, "if you'll walk in my 00:37:46.70\00:37:49.63 ways, and if you will keep my command, then you will judge my 00:37:49.66\00:37:52.37 house, likewise have charge of my courts; and I will give you 00:37:52.40\00:37:55.94 places to walk among those who stand here." 00:37:55.97\00:37:58.37 In other words, you'll be here in heaven. 00:37:58.41\00:38:00.18 So, it's a wonderful promise. 00:38:00.84\00:38:02.38 Jëan: So, in this parable, or in this chapter, in this vision, 00:38:02.41\00:38:05.01 Joshua would represent the people and the angel of the Lord 00:38:05.05\00:38:07.68 would represent Christ. 00:38:07.72\00:38:09.05 But like you said, there's almost a dual application 00:38:09.08\00:38:11.69 because, yes, our High Priest is Jesus, but in this context, 00:38:11.72\00:38:15.36 Joshua represents the people. 00:38:15.39\00:38:16.79 Okay, very good, thank you. 00:38:17.26\00:38:18.59 Good question, Sandra. 00:38:18.63\00:38:19.93 We got Charlie listening in Arizona and he has a question 00:38:19.96\00:38:22.40 about Exodus chapter 20, verse 10. 00:38:22.43\00:38:25.03 Charlie, welcome to the program. 00:38:25.07\00:38:26.43 Charlie: Hi guys, how are you this evening? 00:38:26.84\00:38:28.77 Doug: Good. 00:38:28.80\00:38:30.14 How can we help you? 00:38:30.17\00:38:31.47 Charlie: Exodus 20, verse 10. 00:38:31.51\00:38:34.58 It says that God created everything in six days and you 00:38:34.84\00:38:41.15 have to rest on the Sabbath. 00:38:41.18\00:38:42.92 And He starts listing, "You, your son, your daughter, your 00:38:43.62\00:38:47.66 man servant, your female servant, your cattle, 00:38:47.69\00:38:50.36 everything," but there's no mention of a wife. 00:38:50.39\00:38:53.13 Doug: Well, yeah, I think that husbands and wives are included 00:38:53.40\00:38:57.60 in the admonition. 00:38:57.63\00:38:58.97 When God gives the Ten Commandments, it tells us that 00:38:59.00\00:39:02.24 the men and women washed their clothes, husbands and wives, and 00:39:02.27\00:39:05.61 they came before the Lord and they heard the Lord saying these 00:39:05.64\00:39:08.08 words audibly. 00:39:08.11\00:39:09.54 So, the command is not just given to the man. 00:39:09.58\00:39:11.81 The commandment is given to the parents. 00:39:11.85\00:39:14.45 That's why later it says, "Honor your father and your mother." 00:39:14.48\00:39:17.12 And so, I think it's understood that, yeah, people are to rest 00:39:17.79\00:39:23.16 from their regular labor. 00:39:23.19\00:39:24.69 There is a verse earlier where it says, "Bake what you're going 00:39:24.73\00:39:27.96 to bake and boil what you're going to boil," and ostensibly, 00:39:28.00\00:39:31.50 you know, the women were doing a lot of the cooking back then and 00:39:31.80\00:39:34.67 they were to be resting. 00:39:34.70\00:39:36.04 They were to get that work done ahead of time. 00:39:36.07\00:39:37.41 So, the command's all encompassing, I think, for 00:39:37.44\00:39:39.61 the family. 00:39:39.64\00:39:40.98 The stranger, the cattle, everybody was to rest. 00:39:41.01\00:39:43.28 Jëan: And it does appear that, you know, when it specifically 00:39:43.78\00:39:46.41 mentions the list, like you say, your son, your daughter, your 00:39:46.45\00:39:49.28 servants, a male servant, female servant, your cattle, the 00:39:49.32\00:39:53.02 strangers within your gates. 00:39:53.05\00:39:54.49 It's people under your control, those who you can direct, and 00:39:54.82\00:40:00.83 definitely that would include all of the members of 00:40:01.03\00:40:03.00 the family. 00:40:03.03\00:40:04.37 Doug: Well, he's got a point. 00:40:04.40\00:40:05.70 It's hard to direct your wife, though. 00:40:05.73\00:40:07.04 Jëan: Well, yeah, maybe--. 00:40:07.07\00:40:08.44 Doug: I retract that last statement. 00:40:09.40\00:40:10.77 Jëan: But it would include everyone in your household is 00:40:12.27\00:40:15.14 the idea behind that. 00:40:15.18\00:40:16.58 All right, thank you, Charlie. 00:40:16.61\00:40:17.95 We've got Giovanni listening from Idaho and he's got a 00:40:17.98\00:40:21.42 question from Deuteronomy 3:3. 00:40:21.45\00:40:23.65 Giovanni, welcome to the program. 00:40:24.02\00:40:25.72 Giovanni: Hi there pastors. 00:40:26.12\00:40:27.46 How are you this evening? 00:40:27.49\00:40:28.82 Doug: Hey. 00:40:28.86\00:40:30.16 Great, thank you. 00:40:30.19\00:40:31.53 Giovanni: Awesome, so my question is actually in regards 00:40:31.79\00:40:34.56 to Deuteronomy 23:3 and it's about David and how he is king, 00:40:34.60\00:40:43.74 and I was just kind of wondering how he's king when Ruth is 00:40:43.77\00:40:46.81 a Moabite? 00:40:46.84\00:40:48.18 Doug: Right. 00:40:48.21\00:40:49.54 Let me read this for our friends that are listening. 00:40:49.58\00:40:50.95 The Moabites had attacked the Israelites and gave them a 00:40:50.98\00:40:53.55 hard time. 00:40:53.58\00:40:54.88 And so, there was a curse pronounced on them, and you can 00:40:54.92\00:40:57.05 read in Deuteronomy 23:3, "An Ammonite or a Moabites shall not 00:40:57.09\00:41:02.06 enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation 00:41:02.09\00:41:05.46 none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord 00:41:05.79\00:41:08.33 forever because they did not meet you with bread or water on 00:41:08.36\00:41:11.63 the road when you came out of Egypt, because they hired 00:41:11.67\00:41:14.57 against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, 00:41:14.60\00:41:17.67 to curse you." 00:41:17.71\00:41:19.04 And yet, Ruth, and it has not been ten generations from when 00:41:19.07\00:41:23.55 this was given, no, I don't think it had been. 00:41:23.58\00:41:25.61 Yeah, I can almost trace the genealogy from--Boaz was the son 00:41:26.82\00:41:31.29 of Salmon who the--maybe one of the spies of Joshua. 00:41:31.32\00:41:35.36 So, yeah, it wasn't ten generations yet. 00:41:35.39\00:41:37.33 And yes, she was a Moabite and then she is the grandmother, or 00:41:37.86\00:41:42.60 the great-grandmother, of David. 00:41:42.63\00:41:44.43 So--and she was allowed into the congregation. 00:41:45.30\00:41:49.10 The command does not eclipse an earlier command that if someone 00:41:49.44\00:41:54.24 converted to the God of the Israelites that they 00:41:54.28\00:41:59.01 were welcome. 00:41:59.05\00:42:00.42 And so, Ruth, she said, "Your God is my God." 00:42:00.45\00:42:02.92 So, she converted and they had that law that is saying you 00:42:03.25\00:42:08.66 could be friends with the Moabites, up until they did 00:42:08.69\00:42:10.63 this, they could have stayed Moabites but--and you could do 00:42:10.66\00:42:14.13 business with them, but after they tried to curse Israel, 00:42:14.20\00:42:17.80 there was a curse pronounced for ten generations. 00:42:17.83\00:42:20.40 How long would that be, 40 times 10, 400 years? 00:42:20.84\00:42:23.61 Jëan: Okay, thank you. 00:42:24.61\00:42:25.91 Good question. 00:42:25.94\00:42:27.24 Let's see. 00:42:27.28\00:42:28.61 We've got Regina listening in Oregon. 00:42:28.64\00:42:30.28 Regina, welcome to the program. 00:42:30.31\00:42:31.78 Regina: Hi. Thank you. 00:42:33.28\00:42:35.95 Doug: Thank you. 00:42:35.98\00:42:37.29 Regina: I--So, I do have a question. 00:42:37.32\00:42:38.62 Actually, I've been asking this question myself, but I did not 00:42:38.65\00:42:41.76 know how to answer. 00:42:41.79\00:42:43.12 And someone asking me, in Genesa--when God create 00:42:43.79\00:42:49.46 Lucifer, because He did create the Lucifer, when Lucifer choose 00:42:49.50\00:42:53.57 to do the wrong, where did he know the--that wrong? 00:42:53.60\00:42:56.94 Where is the wrong coming from, you know? 00:42:56.97\00:42:59.41 How do--because God create only the right things, love 00:42:59.81\00:43:02.94 and everything. 00:43:02.98\00:43:04.28 Everything was perfect. 00:43:04.31\00:43:05.78 Where--how would you--okay, I'm sorry. 00:43:05.81\00:43:08.82 How did he know to pick the wrong? 00:43:08.85\00:43:10.85 You know what I mean? 00:43:10.89\00:43:12.22 Doug: Yeah, I think I know what you mean, Regina. 00:43:12.25\00:43:13.56 Yeah, of course, God made everything good. 00:43:13.59\00:43:16.19 The Bible tells us in James, "Every good and perfect gift 00:43:16.22\00:43:19.03 comes from God." 00:43:19.06\00:43:20.50 And Jesus said, "God is good and God does not tempt, neither is 00:43:20.96\00:43:25.27 He tempted." 00:43:25.30\00:43:26.60 God cannot do anything bad because He is perfect and 00:43:26.63\00:43:30.61 He's good. 00:43:30.64\00:43:31.97 So, God made good creatures, but He made them with--they're built 00:43:32.01\00:43:36.44 with a risky freedom and that freedom to love is given to all 00:43:36.48\00:43:41.22 of His intelligent creatures. 00:43:41.25\00:43:42.62 And Lucifer was given the same freedom to love, but in order to 00:43:42.98\00:43:46.49 love, you've got to have the ability to choose to not love. 00:43:46.52\00:43:49.26 God can't make you with forced love built in. 00:43:49.29\00:43:52.03 It ceases to be love if you can't choose it. 00:43:52.29\00:43:54.46 You become a robot. 00:43:54.46\00:43:55.83 So, Lucifer was given this. 00:43:56.26\00:43:58.03 He chose to love himself more than God and it's--he just kept 00:43:58.07\00:44:02.97 nurturing that and it probably went from an early inclination, 00:44:03.00\00:44:06.84 he knew something was wrong, but he kept cherishing this 00:44:06.88\00:44:09.84 self-love until he, pretty soon, he put himself on the throne and 00:44:09.88\00:44:13.88 he wanted to destroy God and he became ruled by selfishness. 00:44:13.92\00:44:17.85 God is love. 00:44:18.25\00:44:20.16 Satan, in a word, is selfish and it's all about his pride and 00:44:20.19\00:44:25.03 his selfishness. 00:44:25.06\00:44:26.36 So, yeah, God made him perfect. 00:44:26.39\00:44:29.40 He made him free. 00:44:29.43\00:44:30.83 He chose to love himself more and he became corrupt 00:44:30.87\00:44:33.77 through it. 00:44:33.80\00:44:35.14 Jëan: And we got a study guide. 00:44:35.17\00:44:36.47 It's called, "Did God Create the Devil?" 00:44:36.50\00:44:37.84 and it answers all of these questions. 00:44:37.87\00:44:39.17 It's a good, great study and we want to encourage anyone who 00:44:39.21\00:44:41.98 wants to learn more about this, just call and ask. 00:44:42.01\00:44:44.28 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:44:44.31\00:44:47.75 You can ask for the study guide, it's called, "Did God Create 00:44:47.78\00:44:49.78 the Devil?" 00:44:49.82\00:44:51.15 You can also dial pound 250 on your smartphone and say, "Bible 00:44:51.19\00:44:54.42 Answers Live," and then ask for that study guide, "Did God 00:44:54.46\00:44:57.36 Create the Devil?" 00:44:57.39\00:44:58.69 We'll send it to you. 00:44:58.73\00:45:00.10 Study it and you'll be blessed. 00:45:00.13\00:45:01.40 Next caller that we have is Eric and he's listening in Colorado 00:45:01.43\00:45:03.83 and he has a question about spirits. 00:45:03.87\00:45:05.60 Eric, welcome to the program. 00:45:05.63\00:45:07.00 Eric: Hi, thank you for taking my call. 00:45:07.87\00:45:09.87 Doug: Yes. 00:45:09.90\00:45:11.21 Eric: I see and hear spirits. 00:45:11.24\00:45:12.57 Does this mean that I'm lost? 00:45:12.61\00:45:14.24 Doug: You hear and see spirits? 00:45:15.31\00:45:17.18 Well, it means the devil is probably trying to get you. 00:45:18.05\00:45:21.85 Of course, he's trying to get everybody, but, you know, I 00:45:21.88\00:45:25.15 think there are some godly people in the Bible that they 00:45:25.19\00:45:29.19 saw spirits, that the devil was trying to spook them. 00:45:29.22\00:45:32.69 And so, because the devil's trying to harass you or frighten 00:45:33.06\00:45:35.80 you does not automatically mean you're lost. 00:45:35.83\00:45:38.43 It means that the devil's trying to distract you or confuse you 00:45:39.17\00:45:42.84 or frighten you. 00:45:42.87\00:45:44.21 Whether you are saved or lost is something that you and the Lord 00:45:45.44\00:45:48.14 only know. 00:45:48.18\00:45:49.48 If you've come to Jesus and surrendered your life to Jesus, 00:45:49.51\00:45:53.38 then keep your eyes fixed on Him. 00:45:53.72\00:45:56.05 If the devil comes around, in the name of the Lord rebuke the 00:45:56.08\00:45:59.35 devil, do not give him ground. 00:45:59.39\00:46:01.19 If there's something in your life that's opening the door to 00:46:01.46\00:46:04.09 the devil--you know, I've got a friend that was seeing all kinds 00:46:04.13\00:46:07.30 of spooks and demons and they spend all their time watching 00:46:07.30\00:46:09.43 scary movies, these diabolical movies. 00:46:09.46\00:46:12.23 And I thought, well, no wonder. 00:46:12.27\00:46:13.60 You're watching ghost movies and you're kind of opening the door 00:46:13.64\00:46:17.27 to the devil. 00:46:17.31\00:46:18.64 So, close any avenues in your life where you're creating a 00:46:18.67\00:46:22.21 bridge for the devil to come in and haunt or tempt or frighten 00:46:22.24\00:46:26.65 you, and reconsecrate your life to the Lord every day. 00:46:26.68\00:46:31.49 Paul said, "I die daily." 00:46:31.52\00:46:33.09 That means you got to be born again every day. 00:46:33.12\00:46:34.86 Jëan: Okay, great, thank you. 00:46:35.79\00:46:37.09 We've got Corette listening from Connecticut and Corette has a 00:46:37.13\00:46:41.00 question about working on Sabbath. 00:46:41.03\00:46:43.06 Corette: Yes. 00:46:43.77\00:46:45.07 Jëan: Corette, welcome to the program. 00:46:45.10\00:46:46.43 Corette: Good evening, pastors. 00:46:46.47\00:46:47.80 Doug: Evening. 00:46:47.84\00:46:49.14 Corette: Yes, I was asking, when is it okay to work on 00:46:49.17\00:46:51.21 the Sabbath? 00:46:51.24\00:46:52.57 Doug: Well, there are obviously Christian hospitals that have 00:46:52.61\00:46:58.38 people they care for, you know. 00:46:58.41\00:46:59.75 Jesus said, "It's better to do good on the Sabbath day." 00:46:59.78\00:47:01.98 And so, if you're ministering to somebody who's struggling with 00:47:02.02\00:47:05.49 some dire sickness, then that's appropriate. 00:47:05.52\00:47:08.66 You know, I know Dentists that they love the Lord, but they'll 00:47:08.92\00:47:11.49 get a call from someone that's in agony from a toothache, 00:47:11.53\00:47:14.10 they'll--on the Sabbath day, they'll open their shop, usually 00:47:14.46\00:47:17.03 free of charge, and they'll go and either help them right then 00:47:17.07\00:47:20.47 or at least help them with some temporary relief where they can 00:47:20.50\00:47:22.87 do major surgery or whatever they need later. 00:47:22.90\00:47:25.31 I don't know of any dentist that will say, "Let me adjust your 00:47:25.81\00:47:28.38 braces," because that's kind of an elective thing that you can 00:47:28.41\00:47:31.28 schedule another day. 00:47:31.31\00:47:32.55 But when someone's in pain or suffering, if someone's in the 00:47:32.58\00:47:34.75 hospital, they need doctors, nurses, and people to care 00:47:34.78\00:47:37.82 for them. 00:47:37.85\00:47:39.19 My wife is a physical therapist and she hasn't worked in a 00:47:39.85\00:47:43.19 hospital for years, but when she did, some people had surgery on 00:47:43.22\00:47:47.23 Friday and they needed to have physical therapy immediately the 00:47:47.30\00:47:50.53 next day. 00:47:50.57\00:47:51.87 And so, she would work and she would not keep that pay. 00:47:51.90\00:47:53.87 She just donated to the Lord. 00:47:53.90\00:47:55.70 So, there are emergency situations, you know. 00:47:56.10\00:47:58.84 If you're a fireman, you should try to schedule your 00:47:58.87\00:48:01.84 Sabbath free. 00:48:01.88\00:48:03.11 Let someone else be on duty then so you can rest, but if there's 00:48:03.14\00:48:06.01 a forest fire, you hop in your truck and you go save people. 00:48:06.05\00:48:09.32 So, even the Jews, when they're attacked on their Sabbath day, 00:48:09.58\00:48:14.02 the soldiers can't say, "Well, we'll start defending the 00:48:14.06\00:48:16.16 country when the sun goes down." 00:48:16.19\00:48:17.83 So, there are emergency situations, but they should be 00:48:18.29\00:48:21.26 the rare exception and not the rule. 00:48:21.30\00:48:23.30 Does that make sense, Corette? 00:48:24.20\00:48:25.60 Corette: Yes, it does. 00:48:26.43\00:48:27.77 Doug: All right, thank you so much. 00:48:27.80\00:48:29.14 Appreciate it. 00:48:29.17\00:48:30.47 Thanks for your question. 00:48:30.51\00:48:31.81 Jëan: All right, next caller that we have is Larry listening 00:48:31.84\00:48:33.38 in Michigan. 00:48:33.41\00:48:34.74 Larry, welcome to the program. 00:48:34.78\00:48:36.11 Larry: Hi. 00:48:36.68\00:48:38.01 Doug: Hi, Larry. 00:48:38.05\00:48:39.38 Thanks for calling. 00:48:39.41\00:48:40.75 Larry: Yeah, I got a question. 00:48:40.78\00:48:42.52 How does a person know--because I know in Matthew Jesus was 00:48:43.45\00:48:47.62 talking about those who speak against the Spirit, you know, 00:48:47.66\00:48:51.76 the unpardonable sin, but how does the person really know if 00:48:51.79\00:48:54.83 they committed it? 00:48:54.83\00:48:56.06 Because sometimes I wonder, but yet I feel guilty about a lot of 00:48:56.10\00:49:01.80 things, so I'm a little confused. 00:49:01.84\00:49:03.67 And when I ask for forgiveness, I sometimes, like, is that real? 00:49:04.21\00:49:09.91 I got questions about that. 00:49:10.51\00:49:11.91 So, I'd just like to know about the--I just hope I didn't, like, 00:49:13.11\00:49:19.29 push the Holy Spirit away for that, you know. 00:49:19.32\00:49:21.92 Doug: Well, you know, every time we sin we may grieve the Holy 00:49:22.46\00:49:25.29 Spirit, but that does not mean you grieved it away where 00:49:25.33\00:49:28.53 it's unforgivable. 00:49:28.56\00:49:30.03 So, the very fact you're calling means the Holy Spirit is 00:49:30.87\00:49:34.14 striving in your heart. 00:49:34.17\00:49:35.50 So, I would not be worried that you've committed the 00:49:36.07\00:49:38.94 unpardonable sin. 00:49:38.97\00:49:40.28 I would be concerned--God wants you to have peace and the Lord 00:49:40.31\00:49:43.85 wants you to believe that He will forgive your sins and that 00:49:43.88\00:49:46.45 He'll give you power to live a new life. 00:49:46.48\00:49:48.82 You know, Christ doesn't ask us to do anything without giving us 00:49:49.22\00:49:51.85 the power to do it. 00:49:51.89\00:49:53.22 When God says, "Repent, come to Me, I'll give you a rest," you 00:49:53.25\00:49:56.99 turn from your sins, you confess your sins and He says, "I'll 00:49:57.03\00:50:00.90 give you peace and rest and victory and a new life." 00:50:00.93\00:50:03.37 You believe that and you're going to have peace and you'll 00:50:03.83\00:50:07.04 have evidence in your life that God is working in your life and 00:50:07.07\00:50:09.57 that will confirm the promises of God, also. 00:50:09.84\00:50:12.47 Jëan: You know, we have a book, Pastor Doug, it's called, "What 00:50:12.97\00:50:14.74 Is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:50:14.78\00:50:16.08 And we encourage you to take a look at that. 00:50:16.11\00:50:18.08 I think you'll enjoy it. 00:50:18.11\00:50:19.48 The number to call is 800-835-6747 and just ask 00:50:19.78\00:50:24.59 for it. 00:50:24.62\00:50:25.95 It's called, "What Is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:50:25.99\00:50:27.22 We'll mail it to you or you can just dial pound 250 on your cell 00:50:27.26\00:50:30.66 phone, say, "Bible Answers Live," and then ask for the book 00:50:30.69\00:50:33.16 by name, "What Is the Unpardonable Sin?" 00:50:33.19\00:50:35.56 We got Joyce in Florida. 00:50:35.83\00:50:37.87 Joyce, welcome to the program. 00:50:37.90\00:50:39.33 We have just a few moments, but you have a question about the 00:50:39.37\00:50:42.14 punishment of the wicked. 00:50:42.17\00:50:43.51 Joyce: Yes, praise the Lord. 00:50:44.57\00:50:45.87 I love your program. 00:50:45.91\00:50:47.24 Yes, I would like to know, will there be degrees of punishment 00:50:48.81\00:50:54.62 in hell? 00:50:55.32\00:50:56.79 And if so, where is that located in the Bible? 00:50:56.82\00:51:00.26 Doug: Well, I'm looking it up for you right now. 00:51:00.92\00:51:02.49 Yes, there will be differences. 00:51:02.79\00:51:05.09 S-T-R-I-P--oh, I added an extra letter in there. 00:51:05.13\00:51:07.60 Hang on here. 00:51:07.66\00:51:08.93 I'm typing something in my computer. 00:51:08.96\00:51:10.80 I just can't spell. 00:51:11.10\00:51:12.40 Jëan: Luke 12:48? 00:51:12.43\00:51:13.77 Doug: You found it. 00:51:13.80\00:51:15.14 Jëan: Is that the one? 00:51:15.17\00:51:16.47 Doug: You beat me well. 00:51:16.50\00:51:17.81 No, I'm looking at Luke 12--yeah, 47:48. 00:51:17.84\00:51:19.17 It says, "That servant who knew his master's will, and did not 00:51:19.21\00:51:21.64 prepare himself or do according to his will, he will beaten 00:51:21.68\00:51:24.38 with--be beaten with many stripes," and then it also says 00:51:24.41\00:51:28.38 that, "those that did not know their master's will are beaten 00:51:28.42\00:51:31.05 with few stripes." 00:51:31.09\00:51:32.59 So, stripes are when they used to whip a person, that would 00:51:32.85\00:51:35.56 leave stripes on their back, and that was whipping, really. 00:51:35.59\00:51:38.09 And so, Jesus is basically saying those who were guilty for 00:51:38.53\00:51:42.33 much suffer more than those who were less accountable and did 00:51:42.36\00:51:46.77 not know. 00:51:46.80\00:51:48.27 So, yes, there are varying degrees of reward, and so there 00:51:48.30\00:51:53.98 are varying degrees of punishment. 00:51:54.01\00:51:55.91 Jesus says in one of the last verses in the Bible, "Behold, I 00:51:57.51\00:52:00.15 come; my reward is with me, to give to every man according to 00:52:00.18\00:52:03.25 his works." 00:52:03.28\00:52:04.62 So, Adolf Hitler is going to suffer more than people of 00:52:04.65\00:52:09.39 lesser crimes. 00:52:09.42\00:52:10.79 So, hopefully that helps. 00:52:11.43\00:52:13.06 Are you with us, Joyce? 00:52:13.63\00:52:14.96 Does that make sense? 00:52:15.00\00:52:16.36 Joyce: Keep up the enlightenment. 00:52:16.40\00:52:17.73 Doug: All right, you're welcome. 00:52:17.77\00:52:19.57 God bless and we thank you for your call. 00:52:19.60\00:52:22.17 Pastor Ross, we have time for one more quick one? 00:52:22.57\00:52:24.87 Jëan: All right, we've got Ron listening in, let's 00:52:24.91\00:52:27.18 see, Alabama. 00:52:27.21\00:52:28.54 Ron, welcome to the program. 00:52:28.58\00:52:29.91 Ron: Yes, good evening. 00:52:30.68\00:52:31.98 Thank you for taking my call. 00:52:32.01\00:52:33.38 My question has to do with Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and 00:52:33.88\00:52:38.35 Leah, mentioned in Genesis 34. 00:52:38.39\00:52:40.86 Could she somehow represent the church? 00:52:40.89\00:52:43.59 You know how you have literal Israel and the tribe, the 00:52:43.63\00:52:47.50 children of Israel? 00:52:47.50\00:52:48.83 Then you have spiritual Israel. 00:52:48.86\00:52:51.43 Could Dinah represent the spiritual body of the church, 00:52:51.47\00:52:55.97 being one of Jacob's, you know, descendants? 00:52:56.00\00:52:59.27 Doug: Yeah, I think you're on to something. 00:52:59.31\00:53:01.04 And the story that Ron is referring to is found there in 00:53:01.08\00:53:04.25 Genesis 34 where Dinah, the only daughter listed of Jacob's 00:53:04.28\00:53:08.42 children, everyone else was a son, that when they were living 00:53:08.45\00:53:11.65 near Shechem, she went out to visit the other ladies of the 00:53:11.69\00:53:14.96 land and maybe do some shopping, and young man took her and, I 00:53:14.99\00:53:19.66 don't think he raped her, but he took advantage of her and he 00:53:19.69\00:53:23.00 said he wanted to marry her, he loved her. 00:53:23.03\00:53:24.63 But that's kind of what the pagans had done to 00:53:25.07\00:53:29.57 the Israelites. 00:53:29.87\00:53:31.17 Through intermarriage they kind of lost their purity. 00:53:31.21\00:53:33.61 And so, there is an analogy there. 00:53:33.91\00:53:35.61 Very perceptive, Ron. 00:53:35.64\00:53:37.15 I've never actually preached on that, but just as I was 00:53:37.18\00:53:39.45 listening to you talk, I think there's more there under 00:53:39.48\00:53:41.85 the surface. 00:53:41.88\00:53:43.22 And you never hear that Dinah got married again and it doesn't 00:53:43.25\00:53:46.49 really tell about her having a family after that. 00:53:46.52\00:53:48.76 So, it changed the course of her life. 00:53:48.79\00:53:51.83 Listening friends, you know, in just a moment, we're going to 00:53:52.29\00:53:54.36 sign off and say farewell to those listening on 00:53:54.40\00:53:56.80 satellite radio. 00:53:56.83\00:53:58.17 And then, those of you who are listening on land based 00:53:58.57\00:54:01.94 stations, we always stay on for a few more minutes to do rapid 00:54:01.97\00:54:05.57 fire Bible questions that come in via the internet. 00:54:05.61\00:54:08.98 So, you can email us questions. 00:54:09.01\00:54:10.38 Some people have questions but they say, "Oh, I'm afraid to get 00:54:10.41\00:54:13.78 on the air." 00:54:13.82\00:54:15.15 Well, you can email your questions, we'll take a few of 00:54:15.18\00:54:16.62 them at the end of each program, and you'll see the number there 00:54:16.65\00:54:19.39 on the screen. 00:54:19.42\00:54:20.76 The email address is BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:54:20.79\00:54:26.03 But before we say farewell to the audience at large, you know, 00:54:26.06\00:54:29.63 we do these programs because we want to share the good news. 00:54:29.66\00:54:33.17 And that good news is that God sent His son into the world to 00:54:33.20\00:54:37.97 take the punishment for all the sins of the world and He wants 00:54:38.01\00:54:41.78 you to be in His kingdom. 00:54:41.81\00:54:43.14 He desperately wants you to be saved. 00:54:43.18\00:54:44.91 But we need to make a decision to say, "Lord, I'm not doing a 00:54:45.18\00:54:49.22 very good job running my life. 00:54:49.25\00:54:50.75 I'm willing to surrender my life to You. 00:54:50.79\00:54:53.02 I believe You have a plan for me. 00:54:53.05\00:54:54.66 I would like to be forgiven of my sins." 00:54:54.69\00:54:57.29 It's our prayer that everybody listening will do that even 00:54:57.33\00:55:00.66 right now. 00:55:00.70\00:55:01.96 Make that decision then go and sign up for the "Amazing Facts" 00:55:02.00\00:55:04.63 Bible study course at amazingfacts.org. 00:55:04.67\00:55:08.17 We'll be back for the others. 00:55:08.20\00:55:09.60 male announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:55:12.24\00:55:14.94 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:55:14.98\00:55:18.48 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:55:18.51\00:55:22.82 a faith based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:55:22.85\00:55:26.82 Jëan: Hello, friends, and welcome back again to our email 00:55:28.72\00:55:31.86 Bible questions. 00:55:31.89\00:55:33.23 Pastor Doug, we've got a few great questions this evening. 00:55:33.26\00:55:35.23 And of course, if you'd like to send us an email Bible question, 00:55:35.26\00:55:38.13 it's BALquestions@amazing facts.org. 00:55:38.17\00:55:41.97 "Genesis chapter 6, verse 6 says that God repented, but Numbers 00:55:42.00\00:55:45.84 23:19 says that God does not repent. 00:55:45.87\00:55:48.81 How do we explain this?" 00:55:48.84\00:55:50.21 Doug: Yeah, well, I think that different things are being 00:55:51.05\00:55:53.68 meant here. 00:55:53.72\00:55:55.05 When it says in Genesis 6 that God repented, it's talking about 00:55:55.08\00:55:57.62 when sin was in the world, it grieved God in His heart and He 00:55:57.85\00:56:02.29 was sorry, not sorry because He had sinned, but He was sorry 00:56:02.32\00:56:06.76 that He'd made man--His plan for the paradise and man to have 00:56:06.80\00:56:10.33 this happiness and man made in His creatures, sin. 00:56:10.37\00:56:14.04 And the devil had totally interrupted that and there was 00:56:14.07\00:56:17.14 just misery on the planet and violence. 00:56:17.17\00:56:19.11 And so, that grieved God at His heart. 00:56:19.41\00:56:20.88 That's different from God saying, "Oops, I made a 00:56:20.91\00:56:24.88 mistake," and repenting in that respect. 00:56:24.91\00:56:27.08 God knows everything, nothing surprises Him, and God doesn't 00:56:28.52\00:56:33.05 repent for sin because He does not sin. 00:56:33.09\00:56:35.49 He's pure and perfect. 00:56:35.52\00:56:36.89 Jëan: Okay, next question that we have is, "I believe 00:56:37.13\00:56:39.36 Christians are discouraged to drink alcohol, but why does God 00:56:39.39\00:56:42.46 ask for an alcoholic beverage in Numbers 28, verse 7 as part of 00:56:42.50\00:56:47.04 the sacrifices?" 00:56:47.07\00:56:48.40 Doug: Yeah, when it talks about the drink offering, it's not 00:56:48.44\00:56:50.41 talking about an alcoholic drink. 00:56:50.44\00:56:52.27 They would offer grape juice. 00:56:52.31\00:56:54.24 And even Christ at the Last Supper, He made it clear that 00:56:54.58\00:56:58.45 the grape juice that He was offering the disciples was 00:56:58.68\00:57:01.45 not fermented. 00:57:01.48\00:57:02.82 He said, "In the kingdom you'll drink this with Me new," and 00:57:02.85\00:57:07.66 that's in Matthew 26, I believe. 00:57:07.69\00:57:09.49 So, we also have a book called, "Alcohol and the Christian," 00:57:10.09\00:57:13.46 that'll answer that question if you want a free copy. 00:57:13.50\00:57:15.66 Jëan: Again, that number is 800-835-6747. 00:57:15.70\00:57:19.07 Just ask for it, it's called, "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:57:19.10\00:57:21.30 All right, next question. 00:57:21.77\00:57:23.07 "Why is it that Jesus lost His ability to be omnipresent, 00:57:23.10\00:57:26.54 although He still is omnipotent and omniscient now that He's 00:57:26.57\00:57:30.81 in heaven?" 00:57:30.85\00:57:32.18 Doug: Yeah, well, Jesus is omnipresent in the sense that He 00:57:32.21\00:57:35.55 said wherever the Holy Spirit is, He is. 00:57:35.58\00:57:37.95 He said--everybody listening right now, when we accept Him, 00:57:37.99\00:57:40.69 He says, "I am with you always, even to the end of the world." 00:57:40.72\00:57:43.32 So, while Christ took on human form in His body, through His 00:57:43.66\00:57:47.76 omniscience, His all knowing, He can be everywhere all at 00:57:47.76\00:57:50.97 one time. 00:57:51.00\00:57:52.30 But you just think about the incredible sacrifice that He 00:57:52.33\00:57:54.47 made in that He will forever be married to the human family 00:57:54.50\00:57:58.44 because of His love for us and the sacrifice that He made. 00:57:58.47\00:58:01.51 So, that's a wonderful thing to consider. 00:58:02.04\00:58:04.18 And friends, we look forward to studying with you more in the 00:58:04.88\00:58:08.98 coming weeks.
